Do you ever wish you could roam around ancient Jerusalem during the time of Christ, visit the Pools of Siloam where He sent the blind man to be healed, or stand on the Mount of Olives overlooking the beautiful temple?

Now you can with a stunning new 3D app called “Virtual New Testament.” This quality resource, jointly created by the Church and BYU Virtual Scriptures team, allows you to experience Jerusalem at the time of Jesus.

Just in time for Easter and your personal or classroom study of the final week of the Savior’s life, the app helps you immerse yourself in the scriptures by providing a detailed visual context for the scriptures you are studying.

For example, get a better sense of the scope and scale of the major features and buildings in the ancient Holy City. Using your device’s gyroscope, choose from one of many locations in the ancient city and enjoy a 360-degree view of Jerusalem and the surrounding hillsides. You can also explore the Temple Mount in a ground-level walk-through of various courts of Herod’s Temple, helping you visualize the significant events in the life of Jesus and His Apostles that occurred there.

Download the free app in the iOS App Store or Android Play Store (search for Virtual New Testament), or for Macs or PCs go to nt.byu.edu .

The developers welcome feedback on this first version of the app at [email protected]. The app eventually will include other virtual models, such as Galilee and Bethlehem, as well as integrate relevant scripture passages.

After more than five years, the BYU Virtual Scripture Group has released an immersive 3D experience of Jerusalem at the time of Jesus. For more information on the app itself and to learn how you can download it, click here.

I visit Jerusalem and Israel on a regular basis leading tour groups on a pilgrimage to the sacred sites in the Holy Land. I always feel like I’m coming home when I arrive in the Holy Land. This place is so full of meaning and significance, this land where Jesus walked, taught, healed, died, and ultimately rose again. I know that there is nothing in the gospel that requires a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and that God can and will save all of His faithful children no matter where they are from or what travel and pilgrimage opportunities they have or have not had. Still, there is something remarkable for expanding your heart and mind about visualizing the reality of Jesus’s life.

I’ve felt passionate for many years to bring the reality of scriptures to life for people everywhere. I’ve been so dedicated to this cause that I spent many years in school pursuing degrees in Biblical studies and Instructional Technology, seeking skills and abilities to spread the good word in new and fulfilling ways. (Though I survived my schooling experience, if you read my daily journal from that time period, it is peppered with questioning entries on a weekly basis “What am I doing? And does any of it matter?”)

At the end of my first year of PhD studies, I felt particularly burned out from the intensity of the learning experience. My Instructional Technology program had a game lab where, ostensibly, educational research on the use of games was supposed to be occurring. I hadn’t played video games since before my mission many years before. The last game I recalled playing was Super Mario Brothers (a rather innocuous game, if time consuming). I wandered into the game lab, my brain having been fried by a year of intensive study, to burn off some steam and discovered the Halo video game (this was in May 2002).

jerusalem temple 3d virtual animated tour

I was mesmerized by the beauty and impressiveness of the visualizations and interactions. I couldn’t believe how far computers had come in visual representations and engagement. I had spent so many years studying dead ancient languages that my brain was not prepared for such an outpouring of visual beauty and engagement.

As I played I fantasized about using such technology to rebuild the ancient Biblical world. I was swept away imagining how such technologies could propel learning.

“Wouldn’t it be awesome to virtually walk where Jesus walked in Jerusalem? To ply the waters of the Sea of Galilee? To journey from Capernaum to Jerusalem for the celebration of Passover? To enter the temple with Jesus and to hear him teach? To see the place of sacrifice that symbolized what Jesus would give to all of us?”

I knew that most people in the world would never have the time or money to go to the Holy Land. And that even if one visits the Holy Land, so much has changed since the time of Jesus it requires quite a bit of imagination, even while one is on site, to consider the realities of Jesus’ life.

I desired to recreate past for the people of the present.

But I got ahead of myself. As a single individual, I didn’t have (and still don’t have) the totality of biblical expertise, 3D visualization building skills, interactivity modeling skills, and web publishing capabilities necessary to make the ancient world come alive for modern audiences.

I had to be patient, and work hard, and learn to be a relentless collaborator, to find other passionate experts who had the skills and experience I didn’t have so that together we could make this dream a reality.

And the Lord worked His miracles.

jerusalem temple 3d virtual animated tour

On April 11, 2012, a friend of mine who works at the LDS church, Rob Jex, invited me to meet with some of the LDS Bible Video team. I learned that they were building an interactive 3D model of Jerusalem and the Holy Land into which they could put the beautiful LDS Bible videos. They invited me to participate. My dream was beginning to come true. Here was a team of highly capable individuals who had the mandate and funding to create this immersive world of the Bible.

Two weeks later on April 25, 2012, I happened to pass the office of my friend, Tyler Griffin, an ancient scripture professor at BYU. I saw that he was in his office, so I knocked. I love getting caught up with others, learning what they are working on, and hearing about the questions and answers they are pursuing. We talked for about 30 minutes and enjoyed our friendly comradery. I was about to get up to leave when I looked over at Tyler’s saw this written on his whiteboard: 3D Temple.

“What’s that about?” I queried.

Tyler then proceeded to explain how several of his undergraduate students, as a New Testament course project, had built an interactive walk through of the Jerusalem temple.

I was stunned!

The LDS church team had built a model of Jerusalem, but no temple.

Tyler’s team had built the temple, but no Jerusalem.

I soon had the two teams together, talking, planning, collaborating.

Eventually we joined forces. The LDS church team hired the students and retained Tyler and me as consultants on the project. Seth Holladay, a BYU animation professor joined the team in 2013 and has been a tremendous asset. And of course, the BYU students on our team have labored diligently to make this dream a reality.

jerusalem temple 3d virtual animated tour

We pursued the development of this project for a number of years. We were blessed by the expertise and loving skill of so many incredible individuals at BYU (primarily scripture experts) and the church (primarily visualization experts).

Now the years of work had paid off, though at times we wondered if we would ever succeed in completing the project and making it publicly available. We humorously take solace that it only took us 6 years to rebuild the Jerusalem temple (virtually) when it took Herod 40 years to build the original temple.

The project is still in its infancy.

The BYU Virtual Scripture group has plans for Book of Mormon maps, visualizations of Mormon’s cave, visualizations of the house of Israel, of Jacob’s allegory of the olive tree, and a steady expansion of the Virtual New Testament to encompass many of the most important locations mentioned in the Bible.

Our grand dream is to allow a reader to visually enter into the Biblical world at any relevant location and time period to have an immersive scripture learning experience.

We are committed to making this incredible resource free for everyone. Readers will well understand the significant financial commitments that were, and are, necessary to continue to make this product freely available.

We need to raise donated funds to pursue additional development.

Our hope is that followers of Jesus everywhere will be inspired to read the scriptures anew, to go with Jesus on location, to hear his lessons and feel the warmth of his truths and love. We hope that the Virtual Scripture products will renew engagement with the scriptures, more reading, deeper appreciation, fuller application.

We hope you join us in this grand journey of making the scriptures come to life.

What element(s) of this project do you think will "lead" people into a deeper engagement? Do you see this as motivating viewers to become readers? If so, why and how? Or do you see this as motivating viewers of virtual imagery to become tourists?

BYU developers create app that shows 3-D New Testament-era Jerusalem

An image from the Virtual New Testament app.

By Christine Rappleye

From inside the courtyards at Herod’s Temple to a bird’s-eye view of the city, a Virtual New Testament app shows ancient Jerusalem at the time of Jesus Christ.

There are “info dots” at different locations that share details about how it’s connected to the life of Jesus Christ.

The app was developed by a team of about three dozen people at Brigham Young University’s Virtual Scriptures Group and the publishing and services department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to information from Taylor Halverson, co-founder and co-director of the group.

The app is free and available through the Apple App Store and on Google Play. A desktop version is available through virtualscriptures.org/virtual-new-testament . See virtualscriptures.org for information.

BYU’s 3D Jerusalem Tour How The Temple Helps Us Understand the Times of Isaiah

Months ago I visited a Book of Mormon conference where I took a 3D tour of Herod’s temple. I walked upstairs to the Temple Mount and into the Court of the Gentiles, and then I found myself in the Court of the Women walking to the doors of the Court of the Priests. In this inner court was the laver (or what little remained of the Sea of Brass in Jewish tradition) and the Altar of Sacrifice. Up some additional steps, I was in the inner court with the table of shewbread, Menorah, and the altar of incense. Behind this was the Temple Veil. I nearly gasped as I crossed the threshold into the Holy of Holies.

While this Temple is not Solomon’s Temple as it was in Isaiah’s Day, it is at the same location and uses a similar footprint. Stepping out of the temple into the Antonio Fortress, I found what I was looking for as I scanned Jerusalem 360°: the Pool of Siloam at the far end of the old city.

Understanding the Times of Isaiah in 3D

You may be wondering why was I looking for this pool. Well, it’s part of a lesson I am teaching this Sunday:  Lesson 30: “Come to the House of the Lord”  in the Old Testament Gospel Doctrine Course. In this lesson, King Hezekiah refurbishes Solomon’s Temple and builds a water conduit under the city known as Hezekiah’s Tunnel. This tunnel empties into the Pool of Siloam and I wanted to know where it was in respect to the Temple and Pool of Bethesda. The  ViritualScriptures.org  app helped with that:

jerusalem temple 3d virtual animated tour

Bad King, Good King, Back to Bad King

By way of background,  Ahaz , Hezekiah’s father, was not a righteous king. He refused counsel from Isaiah ( Isa. 7 ) and struck an alliance with the king of Assyria to resist the advance of Israel and Syria. He also fostered idolatry copying the Assyrian form of worship.

Hezekiah, on the other hand, took counsel from the prophet Isaiah, becoming both a political and religious reformer ( 2 Kgs. 18:1–21:3 ;  2 Chr. 29:1–33:3 ;  Isa. 36–39 ). He did away with idolatry and reopened the temple with all its forms of worship and sacrifice.

With the assistance of Isaiah, his early reign was prosperous, for he was winning battles against the Philistines ( 2 Kgs. 18:8 ;  2 Chr. 28:18 ) on the East and refusing to pay tribute to Assyria ( 2 Kgs. 18:7 ) in the North.

jerusalem temple 3d virtual animated tour

However, soon afterward Assyria, who had invaded Syria and Israel, began an incursion into Judah. First, under Sargon , as mentioned in  Isa. 10:24–32  (see also Isa. 20:1 ). Then under the leadership of Sennacherib ( 2 Kgs. 18:13–19:7 ), Assyria took one city after another until, in 701 BC, its war machine was at the gates of Jerusalem.

jerusalem temple 3d virtual animated tour

The terror of this advancing army prompted Hezekiah to construct an underground water conduit in preparation against the siege of Jerusalem. It was an engineering wonder: there were two teams working, one from each end, zigzagging through a third of a mile of limestone rock, and meeting in the middle.

The LDS Bible Dictionary records this “…dramatic account of the meeting of the workmen is told by an inscription carved in stone near the Siloam end of the tunnel. (when does quote end?) It reads:

‘The boring through is completed. Now this is the story of the boring through. While the workmen were still lifting pick to pick, each toward his neighbor, and while three cubits remained to be cut through, each heard the voice of the other who called his neighbor, since there was a crevice in the rock on the right side. And on the day of the boring through the stonecutters struck, each to meet his fellow, pick to pick, and there flowed the waters to the pool for a thousand and two hundred cubits, and a hundred cubits was the height of the rock above the heads of the stonecutters.’”

As God had promised, however, the tunnel was not needed. Isaiah prophesied that if King Hezekiah and those in Jerusalem trusted in God, he would defeat the Assyrian army for them. In 2 Kings 19, we read:

6 …Thus saith the  Lord , Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7  Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land. 32 … Therefore thus saith the  Lord  concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it. 33  By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the  Lord . 34  For I will  a defend  this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.

In the night before the army was to attack, the enemy camped at Nob so close that they Assyrians shouted threats in Hebrew at those inside the walls. During the night the city was delivered leaving us with the most humorous verse in all the Old Testament”:

35  ¶  And it came to pass that night, that the  a angel  of the  Lord  went out, and  b smote  in the camp of the  c Assyrians  an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they  were  all dead corpses.

It was not a happy ending for Sennacherib the king of Assyria who returned to Nineveh, defeated by God. Hezekiah lived another year before dying and passing the throne on to his wicked son Mannasseh ( 2 Kgs. 20:21–21:18 ;  23:12, 26 ;  24:3 ;  2 Chr. 32:33 ;  33:1–20, 23 ;  Jer. 15 ) who killed Isaiah by sawing him “asunder” in the hollow of a cedar.

King Solomon’s Temple in 3D

Though the final version of King Solomon’s Temple is not complete, there are helpful introductory images in 3-D:

jerusalem temple 3d virtual animated tour

I also found the 3D images of the Tabernacle helpful, since Solomon’s temple was patterned it:

jerusalem temple 3d virtual animated tour

According to the LDS Bible Dictionary , Solomon’s temple was laid out similar to the tabernacle, but with dimensions twice that of the Tabernacle. King David had gathered the materials for construction (gold, silver, iron, copper, timber, and stone as we learn in  1 Chr. 22:14 ), but actual construction and credit of the accomplishing the work goes to his son, King Solomon.

Under Solomon’s rule, the kingdom of Israel enjoyed its most golden age. However, his sons split the kingdom which led to the decline of both Israel to the north and Judah to the south. Judah was responsible for the temple, but in less than 200 years and a dozen kings, the temple fell into disrepair and was seriously desecrated “by Athaliah ( 2 Chr. 24:7 ), Ahaz ( 29:5, 16 ), and above all, Manasseh ( 2 Kgs. 21:4–5, 7 ). It was cleansed by Hezekiah ( 2 Chr. 29:16 ) and Josiah ( 2 Kgs. 23:4, 6, 12 ). Finally, it was burned to the ground and utterly destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar ( 2 Kgs. 25:9 ), all that was valuable in it being carried to Babylon ( 25:13 , etc.).” 1

Using 3D Apps for Personal Study

Along with the Church’s Study Helps , I found this new app useful in understanding the Temple and city layouts for my lesson this Sunday.

The  ViritualScriptures.org  download is available for your desktop and handheld devices. Using the interactive maps, you can zoom from a bird’s-eye view right into the buildings on the Temple Mount. It really helps you get a feel for things as they were in a 360° simulation; making it extremely fun, engaging, and educational for all ages.

Glad to hear that the app has been useful! We actually have progressed quite a bit on Solomon’s temple. Below is a video I did (on my own channel) using some of the models we have finished for the city and the temple. Still a lot to go before it is in app form, but at least there is the video. We also hope to do several similar videos about Lehi’s Jerusalem once we get that model complete. https://youtu.be/Xt6lQAe8ues

I was a little concerned with video showing that the church teaches that the temples stood on the temple mount. This has never been taught. Joseph Smith very clearly stated it stood above the living water and will be rebuilt there. Evidence is coming forth that the only living water for temple ritual was from the Gihon spring. Furthermore evedince is showing the temple mount was instead the Roman fort Antonia. Any showing of the temple in 3D should relay the fact the church does not claim the temple stood on the mount.

Thanks for the update. This video was made by BYU and as suchwe assumed that it was good

The Third Temple – A 3D Walk-Through

jerusalem temple 3d virtual animated tour

This is a walk-through the main sanctuary of the Holy Temple, showcasing decades of research and tens of innovative Halachic solutions to various perplexing issues that were resolved to create fully functional, ready-to-use plans. As the visual tour sweeps through the sanctuary, one can see the menorah, incense altar and showbread table, all of which have already been prepared by the Institute, among 70 other sacred vessels. The presentation was specially released to coincide with the Ninth of Av, the Jewish national day of mourning which commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples.

This is not a ‘virtual’ representation, but a portion of a complete and highly detailed architectural plan which has been prepared for the immediate construction of the Holy Temple. The plan includes all of components that will be used in building: marble, stone, concrete, wood, flooring materials, overlay of gold, etc.

The external view presents the openings, windows, chambers, the outer hall, the Sanctuary and the Holy of Holies.

In the first stage we are moving through the hall’s entrance. As we continue we arrive at the golden chains described in Tractate Middot, which the young priests-in-training would climb in order to view the decorative crowns that were placed in unique windows above the entrance to the Sanctuary. The visit continues on to the 38 chambers that surrounded the Sanctuary. The door opens and we find ourselves within the first chamber. We turn left and enter into the Sanctuary. From the right we see the three major vessels of the Sanctuary: The golden altar, the table of the showbread, and the menorah. We also see the curtain with its depiction of the two cherubim.

This curtain is actually a double curtain, that separates between the Holy area (the Sanctuary), and the Holy of Holies. We look up to the ceiling of the Sanctuary, which reaches a height of 40 amot. Near the ceiling are the ‘narrowing windows’ (Kings I 6:4) which direct from the Temple outwards.

Turning behind us, we see the doors of the Sanctuary towards the east, as they are opened each morning by the priests, revealing the blue skies of Jerusalem at sunrise.

From the Sanctuary, we turn back to the chambers and go out to the long passageway known as the ‘mesiba.’ We ascend stairs that lead to the roof of the chambers. We continue moving, encircling the Temple from the north and west, afterwards turning east.

At the end of the passageway stands a special ladder that is used to ascend to the upper level. This level has a very high level of sanctity. One opinion maintains that it is only entered once in seventy years (for maintenance purposes).

In summary, this is a highly-detailed building plan which includes room for further innovation by professionals and craftsmen, including decoration, heating and electric etc. According to the decisions of the steering committee that will be established to oversee the construction of the Third Holy Temple, which can be begun immediately.

The video comes one year after the Temple Institute appealed to its supporters to take part in an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign that raised over $100,000 for the architectural plans. The video was first released to supporters of a current campaign to raise the first kosher Red Heifer in Israel in over 2,000 years. Over the past five years, the organization has released its most ambitious campaigns and poignant videos to reframe the mourning period into one of active preparation for the Third Holy Temple.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/raise-a-red-heifer-in-israel/story

Rabbi Chaim Richman, International Director of The Temple Institute noted: “One third of all Torah commandments pertain to the building of and service in the Holy Temple. Today, we not only mourn the destruction of the two Holy Temples, but also our inability to fulfill one third of the Torah. Over the last three decades, the Temple Institute has done everything in our power to research and prepare for the Third Temple. As world Jewry sits on the ground mourning the first two Temples, we have taken a huge leap towards the rebuilding, by releasing a 3D architectural rendition of the Third Temple”
