John Mayer concert review, setlist and photos from his solo tour debut in NJ

john mayer tour 2023 opening act

John Mayer has been working towards this show for a long time.

“There’s no tour in my entire life I’ve thought about more than this one,” Mayer told the sold-out crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark on Saturday night. It was the opening engagement of Mayer’s solo and mostly acoustic arena tour, and the seven-time Grammy winner was laying it all on the line.

The results were nothing less than breathtaking, two hours of raw, peerless wonder.

Mayer made a habit of showing audiences different versions of himself from over the years, starting with the radio-dominating pop wonder initially introduced to the world with the “No Such Thing” success of two decades ago.

He became a soulful rocker in the “Continuum” days. The John Mayer Trio showcases his undeniable skill as an incendiary guitarist. He spent years as a back-to-the-land troubadour, and, for nearly a decade, he’s stunned as a Jerry Garcia successor in the Grateful Dead legacy act Dead & Company. In 2021, he delivered the wonderful curveball “Sob Rock,” a work of yacht rock revivalism that displayed a disarming amount of wit, vulnerability and self-awareness.

Fans can be forgiven for wondering: So, who is John Mayer?

On Saturday night, it was clear that he’s all of the above, and then some.

Heading into the Prudential Center, the audience knew precious little, beyond the fact that Mayer, following an opening set by JP Saxe, would be alone on stage.

“I began my career on stage with only a guitar and a microphone,” Mayer wrote in an Instagram post announcing the tour in January. “A lot has changed since then, but I knew one day I’d feel it in my heart to do an entire run of shows on my own again, just like those early days. It took a couple of decades, but I feel it now."

As for the setlist?

“I’ll be playing old songs. Newer songs. Songs you haven’t heard that I’ll be road testing — all on acoustic, electric and piano,” Mayer teased.

That utilitarian description belies the impact of Mayer, alone on stage, leading a sea of the devoted through a retrospective sing-along across his career to date.

Everything was in play, and what’s remarkable is how, at this point, so much of Mayer’s repertoire is in conversation with itself.

“Neon,” a guitar showcase that’s been a persistent concert highlight since its introduction on his 2001 debut LP “Room for Squares,” was as hypnotic as ever – but 20-plus years later, it’s grown warmly shaggy, with a pleasantly weathered patina that invokes his near-decade spent in the land of the Dead.

Much later in the night, he used a gorgeous double-neck Martin guitar to traverse through the Dead’s “Friend of the Devil” and made it sound, in the best possible way, like a John Mayer song.

Mayer noted on stage that when he first announced this run of solo dates, fans in the comments section of his social media channels quickly began clamoring for deep cuts. He certainly obliged. “Home Life,” a “Heavier Things” (2003) highlight not played live since 2005, retuned to the stage for the first time in 18 years.

“Home Life” is a song that clearly means a lot to Mayer; he has a tattoo for it on his arm, and he prefaced its most powerful verse – “I can tell you this much, I will marry just once, and if it doesn't work out, give her half of my stuff” – by telling the audience, “These words still ring true.”

The “marry just once” passage of “Home Life” echoed a poignant passage in the “Sob Rock” ballad “Shouldn’t Matter But it Does,” played early in the night: “It could have been always, it could have been me, we could have been busy naming baby number three.” It was particularly striking when juxtaposed with “Driftin',” a new song debuted on Saturday night: “Put my leather jacket on to play the part of ‘Bad Boy John,’ the brokenhearted vagabond who wandered into town.”

A consummate crowd-pleaser, Mayer followed “Home Life” with his biggest hit of the night, the 2001 bedroom eyes serenade “Your Body is a Wonderland." He did so in self-effacing fashion, telling the Newark crowd “I have a thing for stupid (and) sincere,” comedically wincing at the song’s “bubblegum tongue” lyric and telling the audience afterwards, “It’s a balancing act.”

Saturday’s show was a surveying job with Mayer, now 45, taking stock of his life and career so far. Using six-string, 12-string, electric, double-neck and resonator guitars, as well as piano and harmonica, Mayer guided the audience through a meditation on how far he (and they) have traveled over the years, and also glanced towards the future.

Following the Newark debut, the tour plays Madison Square Garden in New York City on Wednesday, March 15. The 19-date schedule ends Friday, April 14, at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Mayer will be back in our area for Dead and Company’s farewell tour this summer. The band plays Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Thursday, June 15, and Citi Field in New York City on Wednesday, June 21, and Thursday, June 22.

John Mayer won’t be spending much time at his Montana home in 2023.

Rather than relax, the seven-time Grammy winner just announced his 19-concert “Solo Tour” that will take him all over North America from March 11 through Nov. 10 .

And if you’re the Big Apple and dying to hear “Your Body Is A Wonderland” live, you’re in luck.

Mayer, 45, will hit New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Oct. 3 as well as UBS Arena in Elmont, NY on Oct. 21.

This won’t be your standard tour, either.

“I began my career on stage with only a guitar and a microphone. A lot has changed since then, but I knew one day I’d feel it in my heart to do an entire run of shows on my own again, just like those early days,” Mayer shared on Instagram .

“It took a couple of decades, but I feel it now. I’ll be playing old songs. Newer songs. Songs you haven’t heard yet that I’ll be road testing – all on acoustic, electric, and piano.”

Then, once the summer hits, Mayer will go big again and team up with Dead and Company for their final tour. Ever.

Of course, they’ll swing in the City That Never Sleeps too — on June 21 and June 22 , the classic rockers fronted by Mayer have huge stadium gigs scheduled at Flushing’s Citi Field .

Plus, you won’t want to forget Mayer’s festival gigs.

First, he’ll perform at Ocean City, MD’s Oceans Calling from Sept. 29-Oct. 1 with Jack Johnson, Alanis Morissette, Incubus, The Lumineers, Weezer and others.

To top it all off, Mayer will headline Bridgeport, CT’s Sound On Sound Music Festival that same weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) alongside huge stars like Alanis Morissette, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Trey Anastasio Band, Hozier, Nathaniel Rateliff and many more.

Most excitingly, tickets for all shows can be scooped up as early as today .

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster for the newly added tour dates until Friday, March 31, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before seats are officially on sale.

John Mayer 2023 Solo Tour schedule

A complete calendar featuring all of John Mayer’s upcoming tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Dead and Company 2023 tour schedule

As noted earlier, Mayer will sing with Dead and Company on their Farewell Tour and then that’s it for the legendary classic rock group.

Made up of original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzman and Mickey Hart as well as a few others, they handed the reins to Mayer in 2015 when they performed live together for the first time.

This summer, when they say goodbye, they’ll kick things off at New Orleans’ annual New Orleans Jazz Festival where they’ll headline alongside big names like Lizzo , Ed Sheeran , Santana , The Lumineers and Robert Plant with Alison Krauss.

When the proper tour begins, they’ll jam in cities like Los Angeles ( May 19 , May 20 ), Chicago ( June 9 , June 10 ), Philadelphia ( June 15 ), Saratoga Springs, NY ( June 17 , June 18 ) and Boston ( June 24 , June 25 ).

Their last shows will take place June 14 , June 15 and June 16 at San Francisco’s Oracle Park.

A complete calendar featuring all Dead and Company tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

John Mayer Solo Tour opening acts

Although Mayer’s tour is called “Solo,” he will bring at least one support act to each and every show.

While we don’t know who one of them is yet — they’re listed as “Special Guest TBA” — here’s what we can tell you about his confirmed special guests that will be appearing on select dates.

Lizzy McAlpine , 23, dropped out of the Berklee College of Music in her junior year. Thus far, t seems to have worked out for the folk-jazz-pop star. Her 2020 debut studio album “Give Me A Minute” drew raves from critics and led to a headlining tour of her own. Don’t know where to start? We recommend her wistful single “To The Mountains.”

Alec Benjamin is in the Spotify Billion Club. The Arizona native’s mega single “Let Me Down Slowly” has been streamed over 1.2 billion times at the time of publication. He’s no one-trick pony though. Benjamin, 28, has a whopping six additional singles with over 100 million streams. Try his 2018 debut album “Narrated For You” for a sample of his charming, poppy sound.

Huge concert tours in 2023

Mayer’s tour was announced the same day his ex Taylor Swift dropped the music video for “Lavender Haze.”

Coincidence? Revenge? Friendly competition?

What we do know is that many exciting tours are headed to venues all over North America over the next few months.

Here are just five can’t-miss tours that may be coming to a city near you soon.

• Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

•  Taylor Swift

•  Blink 182

•  Paramore

•  Ed Sheeran

You made it to the end. Congratulations!

As a bonus, here’s our list of 52 of the biggest concert tours in 2023 — you earned it.

John Mayer, Little Big Town to open for Ed Sheeran tour after Khalid car accident

john mayer tour 2023 opening act

John Mayer and Little Big Town are replacing former opening act Khalid at Ed Sheeran's stadium shows in Massachusetts this weekend on the Mathematics Tour , Gillette Stadium has confirmed.

Khalid was in a car accident recently, Sheeran told fans at a DC concert on June 24. On Friday, Gillette Stadium announced via Twitter that John Mayer will be opening for the "Shape of You" singer at his Friday show in Massachusetts, and Little Big Town will open for him on Saturday.

USA TODAY has reached out to Khalid's rep for comment.

Last weekend, Sheeran ended up doing his own opening set after Khalid's accident.

"DC, I was my own opening act this weekend and it was so fun to do," Sheeran wrote on Instagram after the show. "Hope  @thegr8khalid  is recovering and is okay."

Sheeran is famously close friends with Taylor Swift, and Swifties have already begun sharing their thoughts on Sheeran's choice of Mayer as an opener. Several are highlighting the fact that Swift's album "Speak Now," which includes the track "Dear John" widely rumored to be a takedown of Mayer, is set to be released on July 7.

"I wonder how much he'll get booed," one Twitter user wrote on Friday.

Another commented that they were "laughing at the fact that John Mayer has been reduced to an opening act while Taylor is selling out stadiums."

Khalid was announced as Sheeran's opener back in October.

"So excited to join my bro Ed Sheeran on tour! This will be my first time performing on a stadium run, and I’m extremely happy to be doing it with (Ed Sheeran). can’t wait to see and perform for all of you beautiful people (pun intended hahaha)," he wrote on Instagram , referencing the Brit's famous song on which Khalid is featured

John Mayer Digs Up Deep Cuts, Debuts New Song on Opening Night of First Solo Tour

The one-man-show is like watching your friend jam at a local bar

John Mayer March 11 2023 Prudential Center Solo Tour

Last night, John Mayer kicked off his first-ever solo tour at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. The GRAMMY® Award-winning singer-songwriter strolled into the stage that had a few guitars, a piano, and not another soul in sight. The solo run is a passion project of sorts for Mayer, who is mounting the tour in the interest of keeping things simple and connecting with his fans on a more intimate level. After the first performance, it’s clear that he’s achieving what he set out to do.

In the dimly lit arena, Mayer started the set with his track “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.” The crowd immediately recognized the song from just the first few notes. They erupted, then quickly settled down so they could completely absorb the delicate new version of the seminal song. Mayer was only visible to the audience through thin horizontal strips of light, as if a bit of sunlight was peaking thought a set of blinds on a window.

The mood was set.

When the song was over, John dropped his head and pounded his hands on his knees. It was seemingly a combination of excitement and relief. The audience was into it, and Mayer was thankful.

Before playing his breakout hit “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” Mayer took a moment to examine his own songwriting mortality. “Is this song stupid? I don’t know,” he quipped. “I have a thing for things I can’t tell are stupid. I have a think for ‘stupid sincere.’ So, as I sing this song, I’m going to really think about this being sincere. I know there are a couple lyrics that are hard to get around, but we’re gonna try. I’m gonna play it like it’s not a joke.”

And the crowd just laughed along with him.

Midway through the set, Mayer sat down behind a grand piano to change things up a bit. He performed “New Light,” “You’re Gonna Life Forever in Me,” and “Changing.” Towards the end of “Changing,” Mayer looped the piano and picked up one of his signature PRS electric guitars. He showed his full range as a guitarist, shredding through a stellar outro that brought the crowd to its feet.

After he got up from the piano and came back to center stage, Mayer quipped, “You didn’t think I was just gonna sit in a chair for two hours, did ya?” The crowd cheered once again for the extra-cool performance they had just witnessed. Mayer even surprised himself a bit. “I’m trying to find softer words for ‘that’s some of the craziest I’ve ever done in my life.'”

Towards the end of the set, Mayer treated the crowd to a brand new song that he’d never performed before. Titled “Driftin’,” the track was laced with a sense of longing over lost time. One can’t help but notice the autobiographical nature of the song, perhaps illustrating Mayer’s life drifting around on tour for over two decades.

He lamented in the second verse, “Called my shrink the other day / Forgot what I was gonna say / So, I lied and said I lost my way / ‘Cause I couldn’t let him down / Put my leather jacket on, to play the part of ‘Bad Boy John’ / A broken-hearted vagabond wandering into town, ’cause I’m driftin’.”

The chorus alludes to the notion that he may be searching for someone as well, stating, “Maybe some day, I’ll drift into you.” The song is an anthem for lost souls. With some time, it could easily become a crown jewel in his catalog. Hopefully, when he eventually records it, he does so just like this – with nothing but an acoustic guitar.

Other highlights included “Why Georgia,” his renowned cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” and the fan favorite “Who Says.”

He also played “Stop This Train,” a song about trying to slow time down as his parents are getting older.

“We do this thing where we worry about our parents leaving all the time,” Mayer lamented. Every year, is this the year? I have spent many years mourning people who are still here. People just worry. You worry about tour parents, and I’ve done a lot of worrying.”

John went on to explain how when his dad turned 70, he had a bit of a breakdown because he thought that was such an old age for a person. He thought the end was imminent. And then, he gave some roundabout advice to the crowd: “My dad is 95 years old.”

John Mayer struck all the right cords on Saturday night. The show was simple, honest, and fun. There were times when it felt more like watching your friend play down the street at a local bar than watching one of the greatest musicians of his generation play in a packed arena. The amount of time he took to interact with the crowd in-between songs was quite remarkable. It was certainly a John Mayer that no one has really seen before.

Early in the set, Mayer said he spoke with his good friend Andy Cohen shortly after the tour was announced. He said, “Andy, I’m nervous. I don’t know if it’s going to work. I don’t know if they’re gonna like it.” Andy said, “John, you’ve already announced that it’s just you. They’ve come to see just you. They know what the show is gonna be. Relax, and enjoy it.” Mayer certainly seemed to be taking Cohen’s advice, soaking up every second.

At one point, Mayer summed up the evening perfectly. “I don’t have to win anyone over anymore,” he said with a sigh of relief. “I just want to be here and sing along with you.”
