Pressure To Party

julia jacklin tour 2023

“A lot of the time I feel like I need to do all the work before I can enjoy my life,” says Julia Jacklin of her third album, PRE PLEASURE. “Whether that’s work on songs or sex, friendships, or my relationship with my family – I think if I work on them long and hard enough, eventually I’ll get to sit around and really enjoy them. But that’s not how anything works is it. It’s all an ongoing process.”

The binary of casual crisis is a powerful force in Julia Jacklin’s music. Since releasing her debut album Don’t Let the Kids Win in 2016, the Melbourne-via-Blue Mountains singer/songwriter has carved out a fearsome reputation as a direct lyricist, willing to excavate the parameters of intimacy and agency in songs both stark and raw, loose, and playful. If her folky 2016 debut Don’t Let the Kids Win announced those intentions, and the startling 2019 follow-up Crushing drew in listeners uncomfortably close, PRE PLEASURE is the sound of Jacklin gently loosening her grip.

Conceived upon returning home at the end of a mammoth Crushing world tour, and finished in a frantic few months of recording in Montreal (“The songs on this record took either three years to write or three minutes”), PRE PLEASURE sees Jacklin expanding beyond her signature sound, while conjuring the ripples and faultlines caused by unreliable communication.

Stirring piano-led opener ‘Lydia Wears A Cross’ channels the underage confusion of being told religion is profound, despite only feeling it during the spectacle of its pageantry. The gentle pulse of ‘Love, Try Not To Let Go’ and dreamy strings of ‘Ignore Tenderness’ betray an interrogation of consent and emotional injury (beneath the sheets you’re just a cave / a plastic bucket, or a grave / who said you’re not what you get / you are what you gave away). The stark ‘Less Of A Stranger’ picks at the generational thread of a mother/daughter relationship, while the hymnal ‘Too In Love To Die’ and loose jam of ‘Be Careful With Yourself’ equate true love with the fear of losing it. Gorgeous string-drenched closer ‘End Of A Friendship’ offers a grand gesture of post-communication – an effort to bestow fireworks on a friendship that’s fizzled out.

“I care so much about the people around me, so much it makes me want to sleep forever, it feels so overwhelming” says Jacklin. “I wasn’t raised in an environment where language was used to express love and care, part of my songwriting process is me trying to rectify that, force myself to put words to those feelings”

Recorded in Montreal with co-producer Marcus Paquin (The Weather Station, The National), PRE PLEASURE finds Jacklin teamed with her Canada-based touring band, bassist Ben Whiteley and guitarist Will Kidman, both of Canadian folk outfit The Weather Station. It also introduces drummer Laurie Torres, saxophonist Adam Kinner and string arrangements by Owen Pallett (Arcade Fire) recorded by a full orchestra in Prague.

“Making a record to me has always just been about the experience, a new experience in a new place with a new person at the desk, taking the plunge and just seeing what happens” says Jacklin, on the decision to travel to Canada and work with a new producer for the third time in as many albums. “For the first time I stepped away from the guitar, and wrote a lot of the album on the Roland keyboard in my apartment in Montreal with its inbuilt band tracks. I blu-tacked reams of butcher paper to the walls, covered in lyrics and ideas, praying to the music gods that my brain would arrange everything in time.”

You can hear it in the spare drum machine and piano of ‘Lydia Wears A Cross’, which rustles to life on clattering percussion, synths and a solitary dirty lead guitar line. ‘Love, Try Not To Let Go’ (“I need you to believe me when I said I found it hard / to keep myself from floating away”) skates along on airy keys and crisp drums, before blossoming into thundering guitar chords under Jacklin’s full-voiced declaration: “try not to let go”. The sprinkling of strings, chimes and saxophone lend ‘ignore tenderness’, ‘Moviegoer’ and ‘End Of A Friendship’ a woozy dreaminess at odds with Jacklin’s detailed portrayals of shifting personal politics.

Those musical flourishes can be traced to an inspiration Jacklin rediscovered while questioning her own motivation at the end of the Crushing tour. “Once music becomes your job, you can lose the purity of music fandom,” says Jacklin. “I spent the last two years trying to reconnect with that. I didn’t play much, I just listened. Especially to a lot of big pop music like Celine Dion, Robyn and Luther Vandross – music that wasn’t so heavy, big feelings, big production. You lose sight of what putting on a big, beautiful song can do.”

Jacklin remembers being eight years old, sitting at the kitchen bench playing the Canadian superstar’s 1996 hit ‘Because You Loved Me’ on repeat from her dad’s CD player. Listening to it again in 2020, “brought back a lot of nice, uncomplicated feelings about music,” says Jacklin. “Pure joy and feeling. And as someone relatively introverted and trying to be cool, Céline was a good person for me to lock onto during this period, because she’s definitely not that. She’s dramatic as hell and incredibly cheesy. I think listening to her helped me get over myself.”

There are moments throughout the ten songs that reflect this source inspiration, and Jacklin’s willingness to explore new terrain as both a producer and songwriter, but ultimately PRE PLEASURE presents Jacklin as her most authentic self; an uncompromising and masterful lyricist, always willing to mine the depths of her own life experience, and singular in translating it into deeply personal, timeless songs.

PRE PLEASURE

01. lydia wears a cross.

seated in rows knees and eyes closed i felt pretty in the shoes and the dress confused by the rest could he hear me? lydia wears a cross says she’s never gonna take it off we sit back to back listening to jesus christ superstar soundtrack

i’d be a believer if it was all just song and dance i’d be a believer if i thought we had a chance

eyes to the board thoughts to our lord we were praying for princess diana miss brown was keeping score vivien’s holding on but singing every single word wrong on the parade float just a child in a leotard beneath a technicolour dream coat

the line up, the quiet the bleeding heart divided forgive me, forgive me, forgive me go on now you try it

we sung “welcome to the family” arms raised, at every assembly little sirens singing their songs where have the babies gone?

02. Love, Try Not To Let Go

love, love is all that i want now love, love is all that i want now oh love, oh love time, time to figure some things out give me time, time to figure some things out oh time, oh time

the echo of my hometown the things i never said consumes the space between me and everyone i left try not to let go

love, love is all that I want now can i give my love to everyone somehow oh love, oh love

the echo of that party the night i lost my voice the silence that surrounds it no longer feels like a choice i need you to believe me when i say i find it hard to keep myself from floating away i will, try not to let go

03. Ignore Tenderness

i’ve been trying to be turned on by you be turned on by myself or anything else

been watching porn lights off, headphones on right when the pleasure begins my education creeps in

i’ve been stripping right down staring at my own reflection ever since i was 13 i’ve been pulled in every direction

such a good student of all that conflicting advice go put ice in your mouth let them slap you about go on choke yourself out

but leave no room for doubt that you are brave beneath the sheets you’re just a cave a plastic bucket, or a grave who said, you’re not what you get you are what you gave away

i’ve been thinking back to when things went off track you know that’s not what i wanted is that why i feel haunted?

by something small strong enough to destroy it all if i don’t change soon will it forever eclipse the moon that keeps me stable away from all of that advice that put words in my mouth all those drinks on the house go on just let it all out

but leave no room for doubt that you are brave a little leaf catching a wave strong but willing to be saved ignore the tenderness you crave be naughty but don’t misbehave who said, you’re not what you get you are what you gave away

04. I Was Neon

i was neon, i was the nearest door i was the sign that said you’ve been here before i swear i could see it, swear I could see it all so clear

i was steady, i was soft to the touch cut wide open, did i let in too much i swear i could feel it, swear i could feel it

am i gonna lose myself again am i gonna lose myself again i quite like the person that i am am i gonna lose myself again

i was neon, i was a floodlight arms out reaching for everything in sight i swear i could be it, swear i could be it

i don’t want to lose myself again

05. Too In Love To Die

i’m too in love to die if this plane were to go down surely the love i feel for him would soften the ground

i’m too in love to die god couldn’t take me now surely the love i feel for him would save my life somehow

it would throw me a rope reach out a hand surely the powers at be would understand

that i’m too in love to die if i stepped out on the highway all the cars would spin around me like a dance and here on earth i would stay

to throw you a rope reach out my hand use all the power in me to understand why i need to stay here right by your side surely it’s love like this that keeps us alive

06. Less Of A Stranger

never gonna know you the way that i want to i’ll never see you in the wild you’re never gonna see me through the same eyes my friends do looking in from the outside

don’t want her to change pick apart or rearrange her oh i just wish my own mother was less of a stranger

ever since i left your body been a breathless fast swimmer slow on the sand “will the race bend back home?” you said you hate being alone did you forget the starting gun was in your hand

don’t want her to change she’s always been the entertainer oh i just wish my own mother was less of a stranger

when i look into the mirror i see my father when i close my eyes i see you

when you look into the mirror does your father appear eyes closed, do you see your mother too?

sometimes i wonder, do i intimidate her? do my questions and my pain take like skin to the razor don’t want her to change or feel bad for life’s remainder oh i just wish my own mother was less of a stranger

07. Moviegoer

it opens with a wide shot the scene is bare, dry and hot there’s a vintage car, outside of a bar someone thin is smoking, with a look all knowing probably dressed in black, in act two they crack

moviegoers’ twenty dollars down loves to throw their film knowledge around the workplace movie director is going down too twenty million dollars still nobody understands you

where the grass is greener, kitchen bench top’s cleaner there’s no rubbish here, no physical fear the family dog is younger, with a healthy liver they can run real fast, this time avoid the cars

moviegoers forty dollars down nobody from work invites them round for dinner movie director is going down too forty million dollars still nobody loves you

moving through the city, somebody runs into me they apologise, i apologise we are both so sorry, they say come on try it on me if you can say it to a stranger, you can call your sister later

moviegoers 60 dollars down now watching the ship go down with the hero movie director is going down to the bar on the corner hoping to meet someone new

I won’t feel ashamed tonight treat it like a stage tonight turn over a new page and write

forget all that i learnt tonight all the times that i’ve been hurt tonight remember what i’m worth and fight for it

put on something special greet you at the door lead you to the bedroom our clothes scattered down the hall

i will feel adored tonight ignore intrusive thoughts tonight unlock every door in sight

ready to do magic naked beneath the cape for my final trick i’ll ask if we could wait

until i feel safe again

09. Be Careful With Yourself

please stop smoking, want your life to last a long time if you don’t stop smoking i’ll have to start, shorten mine when you go driving would you stick to the limit i’m making plans for my future and i plan on you being in it

when things get too hard make sure that you’re talking i know you were raised by the church encouraged to keep it all in i’ve seen enough now to know that this is special so i’m just asking politely if you’d just try and be careful with yourself

please make sure you have got a little savings we have to try to be prepared for things changing i’ll keep the car in the drive, if you maintain the house let’s keep all our doctors appointments, give voice to our doubts

from now on in you i put all my trust now that i know there’s nobody coming to save us

10. End Of A Friendship

the night started out well she was having fun far as i could tell i paid for the meal then went up to bed lay there wondering what’s happening in her head i put it all down to the heat and wine we don’t have to agree all of the time remember she wants to be by your side be by your side

all my love is spinning round the room if only it would land on something soon

woke up to hear her say that she couldn’t stand it that she couldn’t stay out here on the road, it didn’t feel right she listed the things about me she didn’t like i sat there in silence, accepted our fate we always found it hard to relate to what we both want and what we both need and who we both want to be

all my love is spinning round the room if only it would land, plant and bloom

all my love is spinning round the room if only it would land on something soon but all my words are caught up in a cloud you know someday you’ll have to say them out loud

the police met the plane they let you finish your meal I know you’d like to believe it baby but you’re more kid than criminal

just a boy who could not get through a domestic flight without lighting up in the restroom got caught, cloud of smoke, thumb still on the light

you looked so proud couldn’t wait to call a friend we had to fly back home never got the money back for that weekend

right there on the Sydney tarmac I threw my luggage down I said I’m gonna leave you I’m not a good woman when you’re around

that’s when the sound came in I could finally see I felt the changing of the seasons all of my senses rushing back to me

go your own way watch me turn my own head eyes on the driver, hands in my lap heading to the city, to get my body back

I remembered early days when you took my camera turned to me, 23, naked on your bed looking straight at ya

do you still have that photograph would you use it to hurt me?

well I guess it’s just my life and it’s just my body

I guess it’s just my life and it’s just my body x4

02. Head, Alone

give me a full length mirror so I can see the whole picture my head, alone, gives nothing away guess I could stand on a chair put it back by the table before you get there my head, alone doesn’t know how to say

I don’t want to be touched all the time I raised my body up to be mine

he said give me another drink you know it’s easy to talk when you don’t have to think my head, alone, won’t do it that way come on give me the room tonight you know I’ve told you before that you hold me too tight and my head, alone just wants to say

I don’t want to be touched all the time I raised my body up to be mine yeah I don’t want to be touched all the time I raised my body up to be mine

I have your back more than I have mine I want you to feel good all of the time

so I’ll say it till he understands you can love somebody without using your hands

yeah I’ll say it till he understands you can love somebody without using your hands

03. Pressure to Party

pressure to party, gonna stay in nothing good can come from me drinking I would run shoes off, straight back to you I know where you live I used to live there too

pressure to feel fine after the fact out on the dance floor with my body back meeting a stranger, touching his face I don’t want anyone to ever take your place

pressure to go strike out on your own pressure to learn from being alone pressure to not leave it for too long before you find another heart where you belong

pressure to come up with conversation that makes the family fine with my isolation I know I’ve locked myself in my room but I’ll open up the door and try to love again soon

Try to love again soon Try to love again soon Try to love again soon

pressure to act, the right way around him we’re both in a crowd, with people surrounding us what do I do? don’t know how it works

pressure to not, let the inside of my mind spill onto the floor for our friends to find it oh what do I do? cause god how it hurts

pressure to come up with reasons why sometimes it might look to you like I’m not even trying I know I’ve locked myself in my room but I’ll open up the door and try to love again soon

try to love again soon try to love again soon try to love again soon

04. Don’t Know How To Keep Loving You

I wanna want you, I want to stay here like this I want to feel it all, every time that we kiss I want your mother to stay friends with mine I want this feeling to pass in time

but you know my body now, and I know yours we’ve put so many things, between these walls and every gift you buy me, I know what’s inside what do I do now, there’s nothing left to find?

don’t know how to keep loving you now that I know you so well x 4

what if I cleaned up, what if I worked on my skin I could scrub until I am red; hot, weak and thin too tired to run away, what do I do now there’s nothing left to say?

Into the darkness, or is it the light? should I be waking up or finding a place to sleep tonight? who will I be, now that you’re no longer next to me?

don’t know how to keep loving you now that I know you so well x 7

I just want to keep loving you

05. When The Family Flies In

I was sitting, in my corolla talking to you while my friends drank inside there was a silence, weak telephone reception doesn’t compliment a dark state of mind

you know it’s bad when the family flies in working bees back to the hive you know it’s bad when the family flies in just to stand by your side

oh the last thing, that I sent to you was an irrelevant music video I’ll always wonder, if you ever watched it thought you had longer to go

well goodbye, well goodbye

06. Convention

do we really wanna give him the microphone? you know that he’ll keep talking long after everyone’s gone home we’ll have to pay, to keep the lights on and that bill will arrive just when all our savings have gone

can I say something, can I give advice? just hit the main switch so we can sleep well tonight

my social standing got me six rows from the front and my dinner companion was a little drunk says he buys the paper but he reads between the lines “I can show you how I do it, why don’t you come back to mine?”

oh please say something I’m dying for your advice I can tell you won’t sleep well, if you don’t teach me how to do it right

call me a ride, I can’t walk home can’t stand the pain from these shoes I’ve now outgrown

07. Good Guy

tell me I’m the love of your life, just for a night even if you don’t feel it tell me I’m the love of your life, just for a night even if you don’t mean it

I don’t care for the truth when I’m lonely, I don’t care if you lie I don’t care if in the morning you get up not say goodbye I don’t care for the truth when I’m lonely, I don’t care if you lie

come on breathe in breathe out you’re still a good guy

tell me I’m the love of your life, just for a night even if you don’t feel it tell me I’m everything that you could find and you don’t wanna waste it

tell me I’m the love of your life, just for a night even if you don’t feel it

08. You Were Right

started listening to your favourite band the night I stopped listening to you you were always trying to force my hand but now I’m listening because I want to

you were right, I liked it you were wrong, I was a good friend

started eating at your favourite place the night I stopped eating with you you were always trying to force my taste but now I’m eating there cause I want to

you were right, I liked it you were wrong, I was a good friend to you

twin hotel room, no bed to make what can I do to change myself for your sake?

I don’t want you here, you make me feel so small I’m gonna disappear

started feeling like myself again the day I stopped saying your name we can try and start it up again but it’s never gonna feel the same

09. Turn Me Down

learner driver, going 80k’s trying to get to Melbourne, it’s probably gonna take two days lover beside you, gripping the door oh you know why he is nervous, you have crashed before

it’s a lot to ask of you, to believe in me when I can’t even promise I’d do things differently next time

pulled off the highway, found a place to sit he took my hand said I see a bright future I’m just not sure that you’re in it

it’s a lot to ask of me, to believe in you when I don’t know if you’ll ever love me the way I want you to

so please just, turn me down oh please just, turn me down why won’t you, turn me down oh please just, turn me down

why won’t you, turn me down oh please just, turn me down why won’t you, turn me down why won’t you, turn me down?

Don’t look at me, look at the centre line maybe I’ll see you in a supermarket sometime

10. Comfort

you’ll be okay, you’ll be alright you’ll get well soon, sleep through the night you’ll go outside, enjoy the sun soon you’ll feel fine, to see everyone

he’s gonna thrive, he’ll be just fine hurt for a while, cured with time don’t know how he’s doing, but that’s what you get

you can’t be the one to hold him when you were the one who left

he’s got good friends, they’ll pull him in take him out dancing, help to begin again don’t know how he’s doing, but that’s what you get

Are you thinking of me too? I was so happy all those years with you

I’ll be okay, I’ll be alright I’ll get well soon, sleep through the night don’t know how you’re doing, but that’s what I get

I can’t be the one to hold you when I was the one who left

Don’t Let The Kids Win

01. pool party.

I was shorter than my dad’s dining table You were taller than my bedroom door frame Hit me hard when I found height don’t make a man no You grew smaller to me that Saturday when, You came crashing crawling down through the back brush Eyes were bloodshot and your leaden voice thin Said, “I won’t blame you now, but I caught your cold somehow” Then you jumped right in

Oh I want to give you all of my love But I watched you sink as they swam above You are the land and I am the dove My heart is heavy when you’re high So for me why won’t you try

Said you’re sorry you were drinking through the day then Only stopped to let your lungs take the hit Said “I won’t blame you now, but you lost my love somehow” Then you jumped right in

02. Leadlight

I was once a sunday kneeler When I saw the leadlight Fall from the pane I didn’t know that the grass Was not only greener Upkeep is cheaper When you embrace the rain

So I jumped down and lay with my leadlight And under your spotlight, I lay with the shards And I didn’t know that ground Was not only harder Oh but colder when you are not around

I love you my darling I do But I can’t let possession make a fool of you I love you my darling I do But I can’t promise I’ll be here to see this whole love through

So I ran with dreams to reach the skyline And straight up that incline I ran towards the blue And I didn’t know that the sky Is not only wider Oh but clearer when I’m standing next to you

Oh I believe in trust you see But don’t you go and put your trust in me I cost more than you earn So tell me boy why didn’t you ever learn

03. Coming of Age

I gotta find myself a girl Who makes me wanna take on the world I gotta find myself a girl Who makes my straight toes curl

See I had a life in my head I’d be pushing up that hill Until those toes bled Now I gotta learn this new stage

Didn’t see it coming, my coming of age Didn’t see it coming, my coming of age Didnt see it coming I, must have shucked that rage Didnt see it coming my, coming of age

Yeah now I’m alright, I’m doing fine But I’ll be pushing up that hill Until I get what’s mine Yeah now I’m gonna learn this new stage

Didn’t see it coming, my coming of age Didn’t see it coming, my coming of age Didn’t see it coming I, must have shucked that rage Didn’t see it coming my, coming of age

04. Elizabeth

So shaky so fine Standing up there baby oh you look so divine  So harsh that bright stage light Showing the first four rows that you don’t wanna play tonight But you know I want you to You know I need you to And I’ll be there for you darling Even if it all falls through

So steady so calm Standing up there darling with the front row in the heal of your palm So good that bright stage light Showing the back four rows that you got it made here tonight But you know I want you to You know I need you to  And I’ll be there for you darling when it all starts to come true

You stepped down off our home ground said good friend I’m done So I left the game as they yelled my name said, girl you’re my number one

So shaky so fine Standing up there baby oh you look so divine

05. Motherland

These new lines on my face Spell out girl pick up your pace If you want to stay true To what your younger self would do And this kink in my walk Makes me focus when I talk If I can’t trust my feet Then it’s my tongue I choose to keep

And I walk slow so I can read Let my head fall my hips lead Why’d you write the words so small Did you fool me, are they words at all? Or are you pulling down the veil Keeping grounded as you set my sail? By the time I pull it off All my innocence is lost But oh I’m good, I think I’m good Will I be great, will I be great? Is it money I wanna make or is it sweet love For his sake?

And this new parts I now need To help me focus, help me feed They are beyond my modest earnings Oh the girls they keep turning up the heat as if it’s cold But I’m hot, too hot to hold I’ll burn a hole right through the hull When will I

Ever see the land Will I ever see the land? Oh water can’t revive me I need dirt in my hand Will I ever see the land Will I ever see the land? Oh the ground will give me something I know that it can

See I have charm and I have sight And I always try and do whats right But I have faults you know it’s true Especially when it comes to treating you well I will work when all my thoughts are mine again See I was sure at the start, turns out I tried to hard But oh I’m good, I think I’m good Will I be great, will I be great Is it money I wanna make or is it sweet love. For his sake?

06. Small Talk

Zach Braff you look just like my dad Back when I thought I had the best one Oh what a life it could have been  Me in the cradle you on the screen

But you’re too young to be A Father to me  You’re too young to be  A Father to me

Catherine Denevue You look just like my mother used to  When she loved me, oh when she loved me Oh what a life just you and I  Learning to walk whilst you read your lines

But you’re too old to be A Mother to me  You’re too old to be  A mother to me

Surely you’re not saying  The TV lied  I truly believe  That they would love me back in real life

Hey kid at the bar you Know who you are I’ve been Staring you down as I play this out of tune guitar  Oh just think what we could be  I swear I’ll dress cooler if you just go home with me

But you’re too young to be A lover to me  I’m getting older and I forget sometime you see Surely you’re not saying  The TV lied  I truly believe that I will have it all in my life

So don’t you waste my time Don’t you waste my time On small talk and cheap wine

07. LA Dream

Why’d you go to the grocery store On the day you planned to leave Left me here with all this food My body does not need

And now I’m lying listless like a dog after a feed Thinking about the life that you’ll now lead

Why’d you go and push in  When you saw my face in the line Said if I just focus I could get laid anytime

But now I’m lying broken like a dog after a fight  Guess I was not made for your life Guess I was not made for your life

There on central station Uou forced my lips to scream  Loving you ain’t easy babe  It’s just an LA dream And I’ll be lying happy knowing  We still spent the time

Guess you were not meant to be mine Guess you were not meant to be mine

08. Sweet Step

I was dancing for a while  See I was trying to perfect a style  Out on that dance floor oh boy did I sweat Shaking to get noticed has not worked for me yet But I’ll keep trying

I was swinging my blonde hair round See I was trying to get my feet off the ground And I rose steady to the roof of my room I may not be a great dancer but I might be a good one soon

But I’ll keep trying  Dancing for yourself aint bad when you’re dying to find That sweet step that will help to free your mind

09. Same Airport, Different Man

Same airport, different man I’m starting to think that I don’t know quite who I am  Same airport, different man He’s circling the carpark waiting for me to land

Same airport, different dress This one is blue and it is longer than the rest Same airport different dress, Last one was short and red and too tight for my growing chest

Same airport, different life At 16 lost my first love to a one way flight Same airport, different life Sat down by the carousel looking old enough to make a wife now

Same airport, different ride home  Last time I went to my mothers, this time to my own Same airport, different ride home  Riding shot gun to my baby, next time I’ll get the train alone

Same airport, different man He looks happy, he looks happy Same airport, different man

10. Hay Plain

Driving home the road makes me feel smaller My fear forces my hand into the shoulder  And I feel you darling on my own Every mile brings you a little closer

I’m driving into the Hay Plain  I won’t survive the night if you don’t stay in your lane I’m heading away from that wide sunset Wondering if my new man Misses me yet

Baby you don’t have to drive me round no more I went and got myself a car so I can pay you back for All the times you took me back home  Every mile brings you a little closer

I’m driving into the Hay Plain  I won’t survive the night if you don’t stay in your lane I’m heading away from that wide sunset Wondering if my new man Is in love with me yet

Besides that truck driver on the Western Distributer  Who caught me changing, sorry babe he saw everything  I’ve been keeping my skin for when you fly in  And you want me, physically Besides that night in Adelaide in the back of a cab  When a good man said he’d give me what I’ve never had  I’ve been keeping my eye for when you come online  And you need me, emotionally

11. Don’t Let The Kids Win

Don’t let the kids win Just let them lose They’re not gonna learn anything If that’s the way you choose to play Don’t let the kids win Just let them fall You don’t want them growing up thinking Three year olds are good at playing basketball

Don’t let your grandmother die While you’re away A cheap trip to Thailand’s not gonna make up For never getting to say goodbye And don’t let your brother  Stop thinking you’re cool I know he’s got a girlfriend now  And he’s taller But that don’t mean He’s stopped looking up to you

I’ve got a feeling, That this won’t ever change We’re gonna keep on getting older It’s gonna keep on feeling strange

Don’t let your friends turn cold While you burn to green When they walk off the stage embrace them  And say that’s the best shit I’ve ever seen And don’t let your sister  Walk down the isle  Without pulling her close saying I love you and it’s okay  If I don’t see you for a while

I’ve got a feeling, That this won’t ever change We’re gonna keep on getting older It’s gonna keep on feeling strange

Don’t let the time go by  Without sitting your mother down And asking what, life was like for her before you came To be around and tell her it’s okay  If she puts herself first Us kids will be alright if we’re not the centre of her universe

I’ve got a feeling That this won’t ever change  We’re gonna keep on getting older  It’s gonna keep on feeling strange and  After a late one, I don’t know anything Except the more I keep on talking The less breath I got left to sing

Eastwick / Cold Caller

01. eastwick.

It might make for good TV The grieving process for all to see But I don’t want my father ashes Scattered over strangers couches And it might make for a fun night in if I Wore a dress and slept with him But I really hate showing my legs Even when the Sydney summer begs me

Come on now your roots are showing Unlike hands your hair keeps growing Come on love you could keep on dyeing I think the truth is more age defying And in the day when it turned dark We were just two shelves apart when we realised It’s not right,

You are not in a garden you are, in a store A single stemmed rose, reaching out for more

Did it come as a great shock When your third love said hey you’re not Gonna get his heart to beat by Laying offerings at his feet And in the day when it turned dark We were two cages apart when we realised It’s not right,

You are not in the wild you are, in a pen A forgotten sow wondering when, you can run

02. Cold Caller

Will I be a mother or will I always be a child? Will someone come and say hey girl it’s your time? What if I’m dancing and I don’t hear the door knock? And some cold caller decides I’m not, ready to change What if my body is but my mind remains the same?

Will I be a mother or will I always be a child? Will someone come and say your time has arrived? What if I’m sleeping and I don’t wake with the clock? And I sleep right through it and some kind of god decides I’m not Ready to change, What if my mind is but my body won’t take to the stage?

I heard her screaming last night in my dreams I tried to reach out and hold her Can someone please tell me what that screaming means And not say wait till you get older

Are you alright? I have to see Oh my sweet sister you’ve always been braver than me

What if my love is but I’m not ready to be? I’m willing to change, oh it’s not just me he’s also afraid.

JULIA JACKLIN RELEASES STUNNING NEW ALBUM & ANNOUNCES 2023 DATES

julia jacklin tour 2023

Liberation Records are today proud to present PRE PLEASURE, the stunning anticipated third album from 8-time ARIA-nominated singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin. Featuring singles ‘Lydia Wears A Cross’ , ‘I Was Neon’ , ‘Love, Try Not To Let Go’ and ‘Be Careful With Yourself’ , PRE PLEASURE sees Jacklin at her most authentic, always willing to mine the depths of her own life experience, and singular in translating it into deeply personal, timeless songs.

“Making a record to me has always just been about the experience, a new experience in a new place with a new person at the desk, taking the plunge and just seeing what happens. For the first time I stepped away from the guitar and wrote a lot of the album on the Roland keyboard in my apartment in Montreal with its inbuilt band tracks. I blu-tacked reams of butcher paper to the walls, covered in lyrics and ideas, praying to the music gods that my brain would arrange everything in time.”

WATCH: Julia Jacklin – ‘Be Careful With Yourself’

Stirring piano-led opener ‘Lydia Wears A Cross’ channels the underage confusion of being told religion is profound, despite only feeling it during the spectacle of its pageantry. It announced a new era of Julia Jacklin and the video created with frequent collaborator Nick McKinlay set the scene for PRE PLEASURE perfectly. ‘I Was Neon’ quickly became a radio favourite, with triple j adding it to full rotation on release. The gentle pulse of ‘Love, Try Not To Let Go’ and dreamy strings of ‘Ignore Tenderness’ betray an interrogation of consent and emotional injury (beneath the sheets you’re just a cave/ a plastic bucket, or a grave/ who said you’re not what you get/ you are what you gave away). The stark ‘Less Of A Stranger’ picks at the generational thread of a mother/ daughter relationship, while the hymnal ‘Too In Love To Die’ and loose jam of ‘Be Careful With Yourself’ equate true love with the fear of losing it. Gorgeous string-drenched closer ‘End Of A Friendship’ offers a grand gesture of post-communication – an effort to bestow fireworks on a friendship that’s fizzled out.

Both of Jacklin’s aforementioned albums Don’t Let The Kids Win and Crushing, resonated strongly across the globe on release. Crushing debuted into the Top 10 of the ARIA Album Chart and was included in more than 20 Best of Lists for 2019 Albums including Pitchfork, Uncut, the New York Times, Junkee, I-D, Rolling Stone and The Guardian. It was also nominated for 6 ARIA Awards and won the AIR Award for ‘Best Independent Blues & Roots Album’ in 2020, as well a US Independent Music (Libera) Award for ‘Best Folk & Bluegrass Album’. Jacklin’s songs have have been widely celebrate on radio with plays from triple j, FBi and community radio locally, plus BBC1, BBC 6 and Sirius XMU globally. In addition, Julia Jacklin has over 150 million streams to her name to date.

The release of PRE PLEASURE sees Julia Jacklin embark on a comprehensive run of dates for fans in the US, Canada, UK and Europe. The tour will span several months and see her perform at her biggest venues to date, including iconic rooms like the 3000-capacity Roundhouse in London, and 1800-capacity Brooklyn Steel in New York. In good news for Australian fans, she is set to tour nationally in February 2023, the first shows with a full band in Australia since early 2020 with headline shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne announced earlier this week. Cincinnati’s favorite sons, The National , are poised to return to their hometown with the Homecoming Festival the weekend of September 15-16 . This year’s multi-band, multi-day event will be held at The ICON Festival Stage at Smale Park and features performances from a host of acclaimed acts, including Patti Smith & Her Band , Pavement , Weyes Blood , The Walkmen , and MORE!

The National, headlining both Friday and Saturday, have announced today that they’ll be performing two critically acclaimed albums from start to finish for the first time, beginning with High Violet on September 15, followed by Trouble Will Find Me on September 16. Along with these two beloved works, the band will treat fans to a wide breadth of music from across their catalog.

In recognition of its then tenth anniversary, High Violet was meant to be the centerpiece of the band’s Homecoming 2020 performance before the festival was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. This year, Trouble Will Find Me also turns ten, allowing Homecoming 2023 to serve as both a belated and timely anniversary celebration of the two.

Band member Aaron Dessner had a more recent return to Cincinnati, taking the stage with Taylor Swift during her July 1st Eras tour stop in the city. Dessner co-produced Swift’s folklore and evermore albums and remains her frequent collaborator. Earlier this year, Swift returned the favor by appearing as a featured artist on The National’s song “The Alcott” from their critically acclaimed new album First Two Pages of Frankenstein .

Along with this being The National’s only area appearance in 2023, the Homecoming festival will be the only chance for those in Greater Cincinnati to catch some of their other favorite bands in the lineup, including Pavement, Patti Smith & Her Band, as well as The Walkmen, with Homecoming being the only Cincy stop on the latter’s hotly anticipated reunion tour, marking their first together since 2013.

Homecoming 2023 is the long-awaited return of an event described by Billboard in 2018 as a “ritual of renewal, discovery and surprises in the place that's still home in their hearts.” Located at The ICON Festival Stage at Smale Park, adjacent to the site of the original Homecoming, the festival will also showcase local delights of Cincinnati, including food by some of the city’s culinary heroes, local artists, and much, much more.

“When we launched Homecoming in 2018, we were overwhelmed by the response from the community and by our renewed sense of connection to our hometown. It was such an exciting, memorable weekend and we’ve long hoped to bring it back. We’re honored to return to Cincinnati five years later and be joined by so many of our favorite musicians and friends.” - The National

The National’s new album, First Two Pages of Frankenstein , was released on April 28 and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard ’s Top Alternative and Top Rock charts.

Julia Jacklin announces 2023 Australian tour in support of ‘Pre Pleasure’

Jacklin’s third studio album arrives later this week, giving us plenty of time to learn all the lyrics in time for her tour next February

Ahead of releasing third studio album ‘Pre Pleasure’ later this week, Julia Jacklin has announced a three-show run of Australian tour dates in support of it.

  • READ MORE: What’s new this month? Here are 10 Australian release picks for August 2022

The short run will begin on February 25, when Jacklin takes to the stage at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre. The following night (February 26) will see her play the Tivoli in Brisbane, before rounding the month out at Melbourne’s Forum on February 28.

Tickets for all three shows go on sale at 10am next Monday (August 29) – find them here for the Brisbane show, and here for Sydney and Melbourne. There will also be pre-sales run for Frontier Touring and Penny Drop members, starting tomorrow (August 25) at 10am and running for 24 hours. Find details for the Frontier pre-sale here , and for the Penny Drop pre-sale here .

‘Pre Pleasure’ will be released this Friday (August 26) via Liberation. Thus far, Jacklin has previewed the album with three singles: ‘Lydia Wears A Cross’ arrived alongside its announcement in May, with ‘I Was Neon’ following in June, and ‘Love, Try Not To Let Go’ following that last month.

NME featured ‘Pre Pleasure’ in its round-up of the best Australian releases arriving in August , writing that it sees Jacklin “deal astute and meticulous runs of dusty fretting and glassy keys, laced with angelic strings and cool atmospherics”.

“Lyrically,” it continued, “the material here is some of Jacklin’s most intense, never holding back with her gut-punching ruminations on religion, sex and trauma.”

Earlier this month, Jacklin shared a demo for the previously unreleased song ‘Vegas Wedding’. It appears on the Courtney Barnett -curated ‘Here And There’ compilation , all proceeds for which are being donated to the US reproductive rights groups Advocates for Youth and the National Network of Abortion Funds .

Who-Julia Jacklin with Macie Stewart

Where-The Slowdown

When-Tuesday July 25 th  8PM

Tickets- TheSlowdown.com

Just under a year ago, Australian musician and songwriter Julia Jacklin released her third album Pre-Pleasure. This follows 2019’s album Crushing, that really established her internationally as one of the premier young artists in the industry today. On Pre-Pleasure she excavates life experiences while looking at the present and future. The album has a bigger feel than Crushing with strings, piano along with her guitar creating ebbs and flows in the songs and sometimes building to big conclusion such as on the closing track “End Of A Friendship”.  Jacklin will stop by The Slowdown on Tuesday, July 25 th  for a performance. I spoke with her via Zoom about how she feels about Pre-Pleasure one year later, touring and writing.

The Reader – You just released a cover of the Boys Next Door’s “Shivers” which in America would be a very cult song, even among casual Nick Cave fans.  What drew you to that song and is it more of a well-known song in Australia?

Julia Jacklin- I was asked to record it for a book release, the book was written about Tony Cohen who produced that track, and this guy John (Olson) asked a bunch of Australian musicians to record versions of songs he produced and he asked me to do “Shivers” which was pretty cool for me because, that was one of the first songs I ever learned to play on guitar and one of the first songs I played at open mic nights and what not when I was 19, so it felt nice to actually record it properly. I mean, I don’t think like my mom would know what that song is, but yeah it’s not like a household known song in Australia, but much more well known there and it is covered quite a bit, so I just am part of a long line of people covering that song.

The Reader -So, we are closing in on a year of Pre-Pleasure being released. Do you feel any differently about the album after touring with it or having it out in the world?

Jacklin -Yeah, I mean I always feel pretty different about a record after I toured it. I think especially this one, because it was truly written in the studio or in the time I recorded it was built up in the studio a bit more, because you know obviously you couldn’t play shows for a couple of years, so none of the songs I ever played live before with a band so I feel like a lot of the songs sound pretty different it always makes me go, oh, I wish I had played them live before I recorded them. But that is just life and that is OK.

The Reader -Are there any songs specifically that you feel differently about that you could change up at this point?

Jacklin- I think it is more about my voice, and this is something I want to take into my next record, it’s like your voice, once you have sung a song a lot live your vocals kind of figure out a way to do it where it feels natural whereas in recoding if you have never sung it live it’s like your throat doesn’t really know what to do with it so you just kind of sing it the best you can in the right key. So it is more about, so next time I think I will try to sing the songs more before I record them. I think that is something to think about next time, but I have no regrets. You always wish you have done something different with records.

The Reader -I was reading where you stated after touring with Crushing that you stated that you couldn’t look at a guitar for awhile after that. How are you feeling after touring Pre-Pleasure for a good amount of time now?

Jacklin -I think I am OK with my relationship with the guitar. I think we are back on good terms. I enjoy playing guitar now. I don’t know what happened.

The Reader -It seemed like you might have had some burn out after that tour.

Jacklin- This tour has been way less intense. A lot it we had a tour bus, which I have never had before which is just, it is like traveling in first class as opposed to coach. You can sleep on it. So I think my mental state is a lot more stable these days on the road which is good.

The Reader -We are seeing a lot of shows get cancelled or postponed for many reasons. Sometimes it is because of the artist listening to their bodies and taking care of themselves or VISA issues or different things. Is it much harder to tour now these days or are we just more transparent about the issues and talk about it more.

Jacklin -I think it is both. I think it is harder, because everything is more expensive and as the cost of living increases your ability to make money from music decreases and that is obviously going to have an effect on touring. I remember in the pandemic we talked about how we are all going to leave it behind and we are going emerge in a much healthier industry and that has definitely not happened, but I am just a songwriter and I don’t have many answers for this stuff. I think it has gotten a lot harder, and people are being more honest about it too I think. I definitely was never really honest about it for a long time. You just don’t want to complain.

The Reader -Are you able to write on the road, or do you choose to?

Jacklin -I do actually. I write more on the road than off the road. I like to have, there is a lot limits on how much time you can spend on it because you have to play a show or get in the car and I need limits to time. When I am not touring and I am just staring down weeks of free time, I crumble.

The Reader -A lot of artists are putting out EP’s and singles on a whim. Do you still believe in the album format or do you like the ability to put stuff out as you wish, or a little of both?

Jacklin -I love the album as a concept. I can see why financially it is out of reach for a lot of people. ( Zolpidem ) I can see why people are adapting to the world we live in now where people do not have the attention spans they had ten years ago. If kind of sucks. I think there are always people that will continue to listen to albums. I think just everyone is going to do what works for them.

The Reader -On Pre-Pleasure you end the album with “End Of A Friendship” which is a big sounding song. Why did you end with that song?

Jacklin- Just because my instinct with my first two records was to end with a lowdown acoustic solo type song. I just wanted to not do that this time. I kind of wanted the last song to sound like the music that plays at the end credits of a film or something. I felt like “End Of A Friendship” had that quality.

The Reader -On the opposite end of the album is “Lydia Wears A Cross”, which mentions Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat. Those were my connections to religion growing up. Can you talk about that song a little bit.

Jacklin -It was my intent to write a song about being in primary school, which is really not a part of my life that I excavated for art reasons because it was so long ago and I was a child and I can’t remember a lot of it, but I think I wanted to look at that time because that was the one time in my life that I was around a lot of religion in way that I couldn’t get out of. As an adult I have been able to choose the rooms and places I am in and I mostly choose not to be in religious spaces. But also as an adult, I am not religious, but I understand as an adult how nice it would be to have some sort of grand plan from somebody else in charge. That sounds kind of nice, but unfortunately can’t believe in that. I also just like wanted to give an homage to my favorite film Jesus Christ Superstar from 1973. That film is a huge part of my musical education.

The Reader -What do you want the audience to walk away with after seeing one of your live performances?

Jacklin -I just hope people don’t regret going out. Going out is not always great, and standing up and watching someone sing for an hour and a half is not always an enjoyable experience and I just hope that people leave with their minds and their bodies being OK and that they don’t regret the time and the money they spend at the show. We are just a bunch of professionals playing music pretty well I think, so I hope they just leave entertained. That is all you can hope for.

The Reader -On your three albums there are very different vibes. In your bio it is said with Crushing that you draw the listener uncomfortable close and with Pre-Pleasure you are loosening your grip. Is there any idea what is coming next?

Jacklin -No, not really. I have no idea to be honest. I just want to write really good songs. That is all I hope to do in this life. I hope that I can write another bunch of good songs, but you just never know and that is part of the fun I guess.

Julia jacklin announces 2023 australian tour.

Julia Jacklin

These February tour dates will be Jacklin’s first Australian shows with her full band since 2020.

With her highly anticipated third studio album,  PRE PLEASURE , released this Friday, the acclaimed singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin has announced three special headline theatre shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne in February 2023.

Arriving as Jacklin’s first Australian shows with her full band since 2020, she will take to Enmore Theatre in Sydney on Saturday, February 25; Tivoli Theatre in Brisbane on Sunday, February 26; and Forum Theatre in Melbourne on Tuesday, February 28 2022.

Julia Jacklin Headline Tour Dates

  • Enmore Theatre | Sydney: Saturday 25 February
  • Tivoli Theatre | Brisbane: Sunday 26 February
  • Forum Theatre | Melbourne: Tuesday 28 February

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews  here .

Currently on tour in the US – part of a comprehensive US, UK and Europe trek which will see her performing in her biggest venues to date, including London’s Roundhouse and Brooklyn Steel in New York – Jacklin has also revealed another slice of her upcoming longplayer, with new track ‘Be Careful With Yourself’ out now.

‘Be Careful With Yourself’ equates true love with the fear of losing it. It reinforces the album’s throughline – Julia Jacklin at her most authentic; an uncompromising and masterful lyricist, always willing to mine the depths of her own life experience, and singular in translating it into deeply personal, timeless songs.

The new track is lifted from her new album,  PRE PLEASURE , which will be released this Friday by Liberation Records. The album is a masterclass in songwriting, cementing her status as one of the most important Australian talents of our time. Fans’ first taste of PRE PLEASURE came in the form of lead single ‘Lydia Wears A Cross’ (which the singer described as being “about a lot of things but mainly being a seven-year-old Jesus Christ Superstar fanatic attending Catholic school trying to figure out which way is up”), followed up by songs ‘I Was Neon’ and ‘Love, Try Not To Go’.

With over 200 million streams to her name to date, ever since the arrival of 2016 debut  Don’t Let the Kids Win  and 2018’s ARIA-nominated follow-up  Crushing , the Melbourne-via-Blue Mountains singer-songwriter has carved out a reputation as a direct lyricist, willing to excavate the parameters of intimacy and agency in songs stark and raw, loose and playful.

General Public tickets go on sale Monday 29 August (1pm local time). Find out more  here .
