Usability:  A compact and  lightweight kayak <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>, handling this kayak alone is not going to be a problem. Your pair of hands is all you need to lift and load this kayak into your vehicle and carry it to and from the water.

A sit-in kayak with a spacious cockpit area, there is plenty of room to move and stretch one’s legs. Freedom of movement to cast and pull fish isn’t restricted. Got long legs? No problem. The seat is adjustable and some footpegs adjust to accommodate different leg lengths. The adjustment levers are easy to use. This kayak also features protective thigh pads on both sides.

The seat is the only area that is lacking in comfort. Only the seatback is soft and padded. You will be sitting on the molded hard bottom of the hull. Paddling and fishing for hours seated on the bare seat can get uncomfortable and even painful. You will want to carry a seat cushion or use a paddle float <span style=”font-weight: 400;”> as a seat cushion. Since this kayak sits high out of the water, you will stay mostly dry.

As for storage space, the Sun Dolphin Sit-in Kayak is no kayak for camping with tons of storage room on board. The dry storage on the stern is decently sized for a basic, little kayak. This will hold all your fishing gear and  kayaking accessories <span style=”font-weight: 400;”> for a day-long excursion. With the bungees cord on deck, you can personalize the kayak by adding accessories such as an anchor system, front deck wedding, and crate.

For your fishing rods , there are three spots on this kayak making it possible to have multiple lines in the water as well as fish hands-free. There is a rotating rod holder conveniently located in front of the paddler for easy access. This is a great holder for the rod and reel setup you are currently using. There are two more rear-mounted holders for backup rods. All these holders are deep enough to hold your poles securely.

Next to the swivel rod holder at the front is a place to keep your water bottle within easy reach and secured by bungee cords. When you’re not paddling and want your hands free to fish, there is a convenient and quick-access paddle holder.

Performance : This is a fishing and  recreational kayak <span style=”font-weight: 400;”> designed for calm waters in lakes, ponds, rivers, and creeks but is also comfortable in the wakes and mild waves. Its flat bottom means that its tracking performance where there is wind or currents is not good and the paddler has to work harder to keep it going straight. It is not equipped for use in the surf or the ocean with big waves.

Stability is essential in a beginner fishing kayak. A sit-in Kayak, the Sun Dolphin Excursion 10 has a low center of gravity and the paddler sits low inside it. This and its 30 inches width make it stable on the water and even beginners can paddle it and fish from it confidently and without tipping it. This stability makes it a great kayak to fish from and anglers have caught all kinds of fish from bass, catfish, to Northern Pike in it. The flat bottom also makes it hard to flip over.

On flat water, it tracks well with gentle strokes and is a lot of fun to ride on. Its narrow shape and ease of maneuverability enable it to navigate challenging waterways with ease. It can fit in narrow creeks and snake along winding tracks to get to those lucrative out of the way fishing spots.

No boat can excel in everything. With the Excursion 10, the width and flat bottom that give it its stability take away its speed. For beginners and anglers, this isn’t a deal-breaker though.

A buddy of mine had bought…

A buddy of mine had bought one of these kayaks less then a year ago and the back end of it is really thin and has a crack in it now. Its only been in the water a couple of times and sun dolphin will not do anything about it. They pretty much told him he was burnt. I will not recommend anyone to buy one of their kayaks again.

Last year I purchased Four Sun Dolphin Fishing Kayaks, one for me and three for my grandchildren who live with me.

All are 10 feet in length. Two are sit on, Journey and two are sit in, Excursions.

The neat thing is that the kids (15-16 & 17) prefer to paddle around the lake in search of fish over playing with their I-pad or X-boxes. We have boated bass over 20 and Northern Pike over 28".

All of the boats are well laid out for fishing with ample rod holders and tie downs for storage of gear and food. The side pads (for the paddles) are nice because they keep the sound of the paddles being set down to a minimum.

When we decide to eat, we will paddle to the middle of the lake and tie the kayaks together, we have heard comments about how strange it looks to see us relaxing and eating in the middle of the lake.

Today were going to go through the sun dolphin excursion ss 10 sit in fishing kayak. These kayaks are sold in many stores they retail very cheap they usually go for at least 430 dollars plus shipping. The kayak is great for beginners and those new to the kayaking sport. We will be focusing on the ss which is the improved model over the regular excursion and comes with many added features that set it apart from the original.

Pros - Sun Dolphin Excursion 10 Review

• Great for short and recreational kayak trips
• Designed for stability but not high speed

Walk-through of the Kayak

Some general information about the kayak. The color is olive green although they do offer a sand color as well. We ended up taking off all the sun dolphin stickers.

Its made out of high density polyethylene. Its 10 feet long 30 inches wide and 13 inches tall.

The kayak itself weighs 44 pounds and the weight capacity for it is 280 pounds. For a smaller person 150 pounds it gives plenty of room for fishing gear and anything else you may want to bring along for a day out on the water.

• Starting from the front of the kayak the first thing you see is the handle at both ends for ease of carrying which has a great grip.
• The next thing we have is the front scupper hole, scupper holes are used to drain the water from the kayak so you can just twist it and unscrew it and it will come out to drain the kayak at the end of the day in case you get any water within it.
• After that there is a water bottle holder at the top it’s nothing special and works pretty good for being bungees in. It isn't too far a reach for when you’re sitting down and keeps your drink nice and secure.
• Next we have the swivel fishing rod holder. When we put in a rod it fit in nicely and you have a longer piece protruding form it to keep the rod secure. This works pretty well although with a smaller rod it may be a bit wiggly. The one bad thing about it is because how its made you cant position it how you want because the handle of your rod would get in the way of the actual kayak since its protruding out. You can do everything you want to do with it and its not the best but it does work and holds the rod pretty well. It does also come out if you wiggle it a little bit it pops out for more space. A little latch closes and hides the space if you don’t want to go fishing that day. As we mentioned the problem would be facing it outwards since the restriction of moving your rod limits it.
• Next there is a console that’s pretty basic with one bungee and some cup holders keeps everything nice and snug.
• There are some thigh pads for when you’re sitting in the kayak to give you more comfort if you’re a little more heavy set. They are a nice comfortable foam and the right hight for it it will definitely help you enjoy the kayak more.
• At the bottom of the kayak there are some foot braces they stay in place and provide some good support.
• The seat is actually surprising comfortable it is made out of the same foam as the thigh pads and is very easy to fit your back and is really comfortable for when you’re out in the water and sitting up. Behind it there is a large hole that goes back to the back of the kayak for more storage space accessible right behind the seat.
• Under the seat there is another convenient little storage area that unscrews and is fairly deep going to the back of the kayak which is a nice little compartment to keep some things for easy access we recommend keeping your anchor there.
• On both sides of the kayak there are hooks with bungees underneath it for a nice convenient paddle holder. You just put you paddle against the kayak and pull the bungee over and it holds your paddle very steady.

The kayak comes with a paddle. Its not the best paddle but it will do for basic paddling we recommend you get a better paddle in the future as the free one is not the best quality.

• There are areas at each side of the cockpit of the kayak were you could probably store some tackle or storage boxes for more space.
• Behind the seat there are two flushmount rod holders which both work as they should. One we can use for the rod and another may fit a nice good sized net and they will both fit relatively well.
• The portable accessory carrier at the back makes up most of the storage for the kayak. It has a good amount of storage including the bungee cords to make sure everything stays in. When you take the chords off you can actually take the whole plastic lid off and use it for more storage.
• At the back there is another handle and scupper hole.

Final Verdict - Sun Dolphin Excursion 10 Review

Overall the sun dolphin Excursion 10 looks like a decent kayak for the price. If you’re looking for a cheap fishing kayak to just get started in the sport and you don’t need all the extras like secret storage compartments and additional storage areas and super high quality materials this kayak is perfect for you. We would recommend it to get started but if you want something more serious and your thinking of staying in the sport for the long term we would recommend going up an extra few hundred dollars in price point.

Steamtown National Historic Site offers Mother’s Day Excursion to Moscow

SCRANTON — Pamper Mom with a relaxing excursion aboard vintage railroad passenger equipment to scenic Moscow in the Pocono foothills. The trip departs from Steamtown National Historic Site (NHS) at 1:30 pm Sunday, May 12 and returns at 3:30 pm.

This special Mother’s Day excursion kicks off the 2019 Steamtown NHS railroad passenger train excursion season. Welcome spring by enjoying the budding greenery along the tracks, then explore the historic Lackawanna Railroad passenger depot and freight station, operated by the Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Railroad Historical Society.

Ticket prices are as follows: Adults (ages 16-61), $24; seniors (ages 62+), $22; children (ages 6-15), $17; and children to age 5, free (ticket obtained at fee booth). For more information or to make reservations, call 570-340-5204.

Located in downtown Scranton, Steamtown NHS is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. From I-81 follow exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway); then follow the brown and white signs to the park entrance at Lackawanna Avenue and Cliff Street (GPS: N 41.41, W 75.67). General park information is available by phoning 570-340-5204 during regular business hours, or by visiting the park website anytime.
