Our Mad Skillz

My husband and I enjoyed a fantastic introduction to sea kayaking this afternoon with a patient and encouraging guide. This is a great way to get a different view of Victoria and get up close to the aquatic wildlife (we saw seals, heron, otters and jelly fish…oh my!).
Great guide and a fantastic trip to seal island. Lots of things to see including a seal that swam over to say hello!
Had an awesome trip today at an amazing price. Joanna is awesome and knowledgeable, and made me feel right at home. Spent 2 1/2 hours out on the water in beautiful weather, would fully recommend to anyone!
Wonderful experience paddling with my 8 year old son for his birthday. Not sure how but they managed to make the sun shine on a rainy day. ;) Our guide took the time to make the trip fun, easy and educational. It was worth every penny!
Absolutely lovely, knowledgeable, friendly guides….stunning scenery and wildlife….accessible and inclusive for small children! We’ve been twice and we’ll be back!
The dock rats set us up right, with cheap water and borrowed hats and personal floatation devices that, while not all that personal, actually fit properly! They also provided excellent instruction on how to have fun yet not get chopped to pieces by nearby sea planes. Thanks a million for a wonderful time!
Loved starting my morning with a 7AM row out to Seal Island! This is an activity that a newbie can do alongside someone more experienced & both can have a great time. Try it!

Why choose Victoria Kayak for your Tour or Rental?

Convenient location.

Our convenient location near the Empress Hotel and the British Columbia Legislature means you are off to a historic start the moment you push off the dock.

Our kayak tours and rentals start and finish at our Main Office and floating docks on the Miners Landing Pier – right beside Red Fish Blue Fish … a must for visitors and locals alike.

Close to nature

Marine wildlife.

W e are not your average kayak joint!  Despite our outward web appearances we are stuffy Colonists with very little sense of humour.   And be forewarned, it is possible you may be paired with a French Canadian that just might hold a grudge.  If that happens, we suggest discussing Poutine and the poor winter driving skills of British Columbians.   Yup – that’s us in a nutshell.  How’s that for a WOW factor?

O ur kayaking tours & rentals take advantage of the stability of easy to paddle, ocean going kayaks. You will be outfitted in a life jacket (PFD) and given a thorough safety briefing and paddling instruction before departure from our “practice area” adjacent to our dock. Our outstanding location means that when the weather in the outer harbour is rough we can switch directions and proceed deeper into the sheltered waterways of the inner harbour and historic Gorge waterway.

W e are a locally owned and operated family business and every customer is important to us. We need you! Your patronage supports our community and our local suppliers. By choosing to support locally owned businesses, you help maintain Victoria’s diversity and distinctive flavour. Thank you.

Victoria Kayak respectfully acknowledges the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations, on whose traditional territories we live, work, and play.

Victoria Kayaking Destinations

A host of Victoria kayaking operators offer rental opportunities throughout the region. They tend to be located near the most popular kayaking areas for ease of access. These include:

  • The Inner Harbour: Far and away, the most popular spot, you’ll love kayaking around the Inner Harbour. You can take in the city’s skyline while darting around seaplanes and pickle boats and spotting playful seals and sea lions.
  • Oak Bay: For those who prefer a laid-back ride, you’ll enjoy a serene paddle amongst jaw-dropping vistas of the Olympic Mountains, Gulf Islands, and assorted local islets.
  • The Gorge Waterway: A narrow tidal inlet that connects Victoria Harbour to Portage Inlet. This more tranquil urban waterway is a tidal estuary that is part of a migratory bird sanctuary.
  • The West Coast: More seasoned kayakers looking for the adventure of a lifetime will prefer the unspoilt beauty of areas like the Pacific Rim National Park and Barkley Sound. The downside? You’ll need to find your way to locations like Sooke, Ucluelet, or Tofino.

A quick search of Google Maps will provide you with a complete list of operators if you prefer the freedom of heading out on your own.

But if you’d prefer a safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable alternative, several pre-packaged Victoria kayaking tours are available.

Victoria Kayaking Tips

Before embarking on any Victoria kayaking adventure, it’s essential to prioritize safety. But remember, if you partake in a guided tour, your guide will ensure you’re well-equipped and versed in safety procedures.

Here are some valuable tips to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience on the water.

  • Gear Up : Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) while kayaking, regardless of your skill level. Additionally, invest in proper kayaking attire and footwear for comfort and protection. Luckily, if you take a tour, these should all be included.
  • Know the Conditions : Check the weather forecast and tides before heading out. Avoid kayaking in adverse weather conditions or when strong currents are present.
  • Inform Others : Let someone know about your kayaking plans, including your intended route and the estimated time of return. This ensures that someone can raise the alarm if you encounter any difficulties.
  • Master Basic Skills : Familiarize yourself with basic kayaking techniques, such as proper paddling strokes and self-rescue maneuvers. Consider taking a kayaking lesson or joining a guided tour if you’re new to the sport.
  • Respect Wildlife : When encountering marine wildlife, maintain a safe distance and observe them without disturbing their natural behaviour. Be mindful of nesting areas and sensitive habitats.
  • Stay Hydrated : Bring adequate water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized during your kayaking adventure. It’s important to take care of your physical well-being.
  • Take a Packaged Tour: Rather than worry about all the factors above, I’d recommend booking one of our pre-packed kayaking tours. That way, you can join a group of like-minded travellers and receive guidance and safety tips from a qualified professional.

I saw sea otters and the harbor seals came so close to the kayaks and felt like they were good ocean buddies. I was only in Victoria for a tiny bit, so the evening tour was awesome. The sunset was beautiful. On the way back in the city lights turned on. The tour guides were so awesome and had tons of local knowledge. They even cleaned up the ocean a bit on the way back! The staff at Ocean River were all really nice and helpful. They don't provide you with a lot of gear which surprised me since I paddle in places that need wetsuits and spray jackets. They did have a dry bag and partial spray skirt which I appreciated. We didn't leave the dock until 1045am so I was bummed when the tour only went until 1240pm. Given the literally perfect paddling weather, I would have liked some accommodation for the later departure due to late arrivals. That's the challenge with group tours but I would definitely go out with them again. I even recommended them to a couple I met in downtown Victoria the next day. Read more Written August 22, 2023

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed kayaking in Oak Bay with the fabulous Frederico as our guide. We got to paddle through what can only be described as a kelp forest (think Finding Nemo directed by Tim Burton), then enjoyed the views as we tread the open water. Frederico guided us to an island filled with seals; it was a thrill to quietly watch them go about their seal business. During our tour, Frederico pointed out some interesting landmarks, told us about Takaya (a sea wolf who had lived alone on an island we passed), and helped us appreciate the birds we saw. The folks in our tour ranged in abilities from experienced paddlers to total newbie, and everyone was comfortable on the water and had a great time. This is an excellent tour! With nearly 3500km of coastline and hundreds of lakes, steams and rivers, paddling is a top activity in Victoria. Not only does it allow a close up of the marine life that calls the coast home, but kayaking also gives a unique outlook on Victoria. It’s a great way to take advantage of an aspect that makes the place so special in the first place. In fact, Victoria and the West Coast of British Columbia have been rated as one of the best kayaking destinations in the world. Stunning by virtue of its unique and rugged coast, it’ll be tough to disagree after the first trip out there. The nearby Gulf and Discovery Islands create a near endless expanse of territory to explore and each expedition is a brand new adventure.

First time paddlers can rest assured that most kayaking companies do tours geared towards beginners. They go over technique and water safety before departure, and the paddling routes are do-able by almost anyone. Most tours start off at or near the Inner Harbour, granting an unparalleled viewpoint of the cityscape of Victoria from the water. Most tours pack in plenty of educational breaks and sightseeing stops, so there’s no need to worry about getting tired out there. Those who are perpetually in the water and have a handle on what they are doing can book longer tours and even overnighters, or simply find a place that will rent out gear.

Kayaks are quite stable boats, typically made of fiberglass or polyethylene. Light and with double ended paddles, they’re cut smoothly and easily through the water. As far as exercising goes, this is a pretty painless option. Pack a friend into a double for added entertainment and test out communication and coordination. Waterways in Victoria are quite sheltered, which is why it’s such a fantastic place to paddle. The Gulf and Discovery Islands, the Gorge Waterway and Inner Harbour are the highlights, but there are plenty of lakes, streams and rivers to explore if freshwater is preferred.

As far as gearing up goes, athletic clothing is the best bet. Strapped sandals or waterproof shoes, lots of sunscreen, lip balm, a hat and sunglasses for those sunny days are also a good call. Chances of ending up completely soaked are small, but paddles tend to dribble.
