Culture and customs.

Kenya is one of Africa’s most multicultural countries, with a population as diverse as its terrain. There are more than 40 different ethnic tribes, each with their own language, culture, and customs. The red-robed, beaded Maasai of the south are undoubtedly the most famous tribespeople of the region. The unique Swahili culture dominates the coastal regions and Islam is quite common in the North. Nairobi is home to a large swirl of humanity, with significant Indian, African, and Western populations. As a result, you’re likely to see mosques, churches, and temples, taste international cuisine from all over the world and hear the sounds of Kenyan hip-hop, traditional African drumming, and Western pop.

Depending on where you are in Kenya, the culture and customs vary according to the area you are visiting. The northern and coastal regions tend to be more traditional, while Nairobi, as an international hub of trade and commerce, tends to be more liberal. The Maasai and other tribes typically lead pastoral lives based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Their daily life is based on centuries of tradition and if you get the chance to visit a tribal village, you’ll be able to see the customs of these fascinating people firsthand. Traditional clothing, dance, song, and ceremonies keep this proud culture alive in the face of modernization, which is sweeping through the country.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating. Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

As a multiracial society, Kenya has many different cuisines for travelers to try. From traditional Swahili cuisine to Indian, European, and Middle Eastern food, many cultures are represented, especially in large cities like Nairobi. While the average Kenyan lives mostly on maize, beans, and vegetables, tourist areas and large cities offer much more variety for visitors.

Things to eat in Kenya

Kenya’s coastal areas, such as Mombasa and Lamu, are the best places to feast on fresh crab, lobster, oysters, and kingfish cooked to perfection in sumptuous spices.

2. Nyama Choma

One strictly for the carnivores, Nyama Choma is a popular Kenyan style of cooking and eating meat. Goat, beef, and chicken are roasted and served on a communal cutting board, sometimes with condiments such as chili, salt, chopped tomatoes, and avocado.

With a significant population hailing from India, Kenya is a great place to savor spicy curries made with an East African twist.

4. Tropical fruit

For a cheap and cost-effective snack, head to the market stalls that sell a colorful array of tropical fruit. Pineapples, papayas, bananas, and passionfruit are usually plentiful in Kenya. Any fruit that you can peel is a more hygienic, easy option than the one you have to wash.

Geography and environment

Kenya is located in East Africa, sharing borders with   Ethiopia , Somalia, Sudan,   Tanzania   , and   Uganda . With a diverse topography, Kenya has a wide variety of terrain – lofty mountains, dense rainforest, stark plains, and soft-sand beaches.

This diversity also applies to the environments that Kenya’s people live in. Kenya’s crowded capital is a heaving melange of cars, buses, skyscrapers, street stalls, markets, and people; the idyllic Loita Hills is the heart of Maasai country; the national parks run wild with exotic creatures; and rustic Lamu Island is a car-free piece of living history. Overall, most Kenyans either live a fast-paced existence in the modern metropolis of Nairobi or a quieter, agricultural-based life in Kenya’s rural towns and villages.

History and government

Early history.

Recent archaeological findings in Kenya have revealed the remains of one of the earliest species of hominid, placing Kenya among the first places inhabited by humans. Before the arrival of outsiders, Kenya was inhabited by nomadic tribes who most likely entered Kenya from the north. The Maasai and the Kikuyu were the most dominant in numbers, although the Maasai were well known for their reputation as strong warriors who often raided their neighbors.

During the 19th century, Kenya came under the influence of outside cultures due to the arrival of traders from the Middle East and Asia, and settlers and missionaries from Europe. Britain and Germany both had vested interests in Kenya for its abundance of natural resources (especially ivory) and because it was an important point for trade. As such, settlers from Britain, Germany, and other European nations flooded into the country in large numbers, setting up agricultural empires such as coffee plantations. These plantations relied heavily on local tribespeople for labor, much to the resentment of the indigenous populations. As a result of this, a large number of Indian laborers were brought to Kenya to work on plantations and build railroads. This Indian influence is reflected in the current population of Kenya.

Recent history

After much infighting, confrontation, uprising, and reform, Kenya was granted its independence from British colonial rule in 1963. The “Mau Mau Uprising” of the 1950s was responsible for drawing attention to the plight of the African population, and was also the catalyst for the change in how Kenya is governed.

The 1970s saw Kenya’s international economic profile grow due to the successful development of a free-market economy, with agriculture and tourism creating more a more stable economy. More recently, Kenya’s tourism industry has continued to develop and flourish, mainly due to its wealth of exotic animals, national parks, coastal hot-spots and unique cultures. Standards of living have also improved in Kenya, with an overall improvement in life expectancy, infant mortality, and fertility rates – probably due to the increased investment in family planning, education, and health by both the Kenyan government and NGOs. Despite this, many Kenyans still live below the poverty line and struggle to provide the bare necessities for themselves and their children. Regardless of this, travelers will be touched by the generosity of spirit and genuine hospitality that Kenyans display to visitors.

Top 10 wildlife encounters in Kenya

1. cheetah chase.

The cheetah, the Ferrari of the animal kingdom, is the fastest land animal on the planet. This slick predator can reach speeds of up to 120 km/hr and can accelerate to 103km/hr in just three seconds. Seeing a cheetah stealthily stalk, then pursue, a gazelle, springbok or an impala is a thrilling sight.

Spot the speedy cheetah on our 7 day Premium Kenya adventure.

2. Lioness kill

See the circle of life play out in Masai Mara National Reserve. Lions might be the kings of the jungle, but in Kenya, it's the lionesses that do the hunting. Working in groups, these big cats track down prey such as wildebeest, impalas, zebras and buffalo. If you are lucky, you will see a kill - the lionesses hunting together, encircling a herd then targeting the closest animal. The attack is swift and powerful - an experience you will never forget!

Watch the lioness in her natural habitat on our 15 day Premium Kenya & Tanzania tour.

3. Wildebeest migration

The annual migration of 1.5 million wildebeest across the grassy plains of Eastern Africa is an extraordinary spectacle of nature. The wildebeests risk drowning in rivers and attacks from big cats and crocodiles, to travel nearly 2,000 km in search of food and water. Around 200,000 zebra and 500,000 Thomson's gazelle also join this boisterous group each year, making it one of the greatest shows on earth.

Witness the wildebeest migration on our 8 day Kenya Wildlife Safari.

4. Sea of flamingos

See Lake Nakuru turn a shimmering sea of pink as millions of flamingos flock to feed in the shallow waters. The sheer amount of these long-legged creatures - among 400 species of birds that inhabit the area - is an incredible sight.

Marvel at flamingos on our 15 day Masai Heartlands adventure.

5. Elephant bath time

Elephants love water and, despite their size, they are excellent swimmers. To cool off from the scorching African sun, they splash about in lakes, paddle in rivers and give themselves a shower using their trunks. Witnessing these gentle giants having a bath is a truly memorable experience, but don't stand too close or you'll likely get very wet.

Catch a spray from elephants on our 13 day Premium Uganda, Rwanda & Kenya tour.

6. Rhino love

A baby rhino stays by its mother's side for up to five years after it is born and, during this time, mom is extremely protective of her calf. With an adult white rhino weighing up to 3,600 kg and reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h when charging, you don't want to get between a mother rhino and her baby. The best place for spotting the rare black rhino is Kenya's Aberdare National Park.

Snap some photos of these fascinating creatures on our 15 day Premium Kenya & Southern Africa Highlights tour.

7. Giraffe parade

It's the classic African image – giraffes striding across the African savanna at sunset, nibbling on acacia trees and carving a graceful silhouette on the orange-tinged skyline. Kenya has the biggest giraffe population on the continent, so a dusk safari to see these unique creatures is a must.

Look up at Kenya's giraffe population on our 8 day Kenya Family Safari.

8. Hippos wallowing

One of Africa's best locations for hippo spotting is Lake Naivasha. Here, you can see large pods of these mighty animals submerged in the water and wallowing in mud. More than just social interaction, the water helps them cool down and protects their skin from drying out. With the exception of feeding, hippos spend most of their lives in the water - from childbirth and reproduction to fighting with other hippos - so it's very likely you'll see them playing in their aquatic playground.

Watch hippos playing in the water on our 31 day Premium Kenya & Southern Africa In Depth tour.

9. Zebra crossing

For many, the highlight of the annual zebra migration is hundreds of thousands of these black-and-white-striped animals making the death-defying dash across the Mara River. Vulnerable to massive crocodiles lying in wait for a tasty meal, the zebras don't waste any time once they decide to take the plunge.

Admire these majestic animals on our 20 day Best of East Africa tour.

10. Monkey business

That chatter from the treetops above is most likely from cheeky colobus monkeys. As these creatures spend nearly all of their lives in the forest canopy, your best chance of spotting them is as they dart through the trees, a flurry of black and white fur. Treating branches like trampolines, they leap high into the air, then drop downward, using the long hair on their shoulders like a parachute. Listen out for males, whose croaking roars can often be heard resonating throughout the forest.

Point out swinging monkeys on one of our safari tours in Kenya.

From the large, lively markets of Nairobi to the small, slow-paced markets of the villages, shopping in Kenya is definitely "market-centric". Nairobi and other large cities have a range of boutiques and malls but, as in most other African countries, the buzzing markets are some of the best places to shop, eat and mingle with locals.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand for example have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Kenya

1. Handicrafts

The wood and soapstone carvings in Kenya are of great quality. Peruse the carvings at city markets and shops, or alternatively, buy direct from artisans in countryside villages.

2. Maasai jewellery

The colorful beaded creations of the Maasai make excellent souvenirs. Wear them as a bold, statement piece, or hang them on walls at home as a unique reminder of your time in Kenya.

Kenyan markets are full of vibrant fabric sarongs and wraps (also known as kikoys or kangas). Put these on your shopping list as they offer great protection from the African sun.

4. Kenyan music

Reggae, afro-rap, and African hip-hop are popular (especially in Kenya’s big cities), so stock up on some local music to bring a bit of Kenyan rhythm home with you.

Festival and events

Jamhuri day.

Feasts, speeches, parades, music, and dance all feature in this national holiday commemorating Kenya’s independence and the establishment of its republic. A mass celebration of freedom and unity, this is a big day for all Kenyan people. The day is celebrated on 12th December each year.

The birthday of the Prophet Mohammed turns Kenya’s Lamu Island from a sleepy village into a busy hub of activity. Pilgrims and visitors flock here for four days of devotional prayers and reverence, concluding with fun events such as donkey races, dhow sailing, traditional dance, and drumming.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

Kenya is a year-round destination with many drawcards depending on the activities you want to do, the animals you'd like to see and the type of weather you'd prefer to experience.

Most safari destinations are at their best during the dry season from June to October or December to March when it's not too hot, rainfall is low and vegetation is thinner (making it easier to view wildlife). These periods coincide with the high tourist season, particularly in December and January, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation rates.

Do I need a visa to travel to Kenya?

Most nationalities – except 43 exempt nationalities including the Bahamas, Cyprus, South Africa , Malaysia, Singapore, Tanzania and  Zimbabwe  – require a visa to enter Kenya for travel, business or transit purposes. Check the official eligibility list for more information.

You must obtain a visa before you travel as visas on arrival are not available. The good news is that the process is fairly quick and easy and most nationalities can apply online.

The e-visa takes around three working days to process, but you should apply two weeks prior to travel to be on the safe side.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Kenya?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Kenya but a little generosity will be received positively, especially considering the low wages that Kenyan service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is wise, as is leaving spare change at restaurants.

What is the internet access like in Kenya?

Travelers will be able to access the internet quite easily in the internet cafes of Kenya’s large cities but should expect limited or no access in regional and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Kenya?

Cell phone coverage is good in Kenya’s large cities and towns, but less so in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your mobile phone.

What are the toilets like in Kenya?

Squat/pit toilets are the standard in Kenya, except for western-style flushable toilets that are sometimes available in large hotels and other modern buildings. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as this is rarely provided.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Street food (plate of stew) = 300-500 KES
  • Bottle of beer in a local bar = 250-500 KES
  • Food court or fast-food meal = 500-700 KES
  • Meal at a sit-down restaurant = 4000+ KES

Can I drink the water in Kenya?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Kenya. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Kenya?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in Kenya?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and tourist areas like Nairobi and Mombasa but are rarer in small towns, rural areas and villages. Be sure to have other payment methods available when venturing out of the big cities, as ATMs aren't always an option.

What public holidays are celebrated in Kenya?

  • 1 Jan New Year's Day
  • 2 Jan New Year Holiday
  • Good Friday*
  • Easter Monday*
  • 1 May-Labour Day
  • 1 Jun Madaraka Day / National Day
  • Idd ul Fitr / End of Ramadan
  • Idd ul Azha (Muslims only)
  • Diwali (Hindus only)
  • 20 Oct Mashujaa Day
  • 12 Dec Jamhuri Day
  • 25 Dec Christmas Day
  • 26 Dec Boxing Day

Please note, Kenya public holidays may vary.

What should I pack for Kenya?

Kenyans dress conservatively so it's important that you do the same to respect the local culture and customs. Dressing conservatively doesn't mean you need to cover yourself from head to toe, but you should wear long, loose-fitting clothing that covers your knees, shoulders, midriff and chest. Long layers are also more effective in keeping you cool and protecting your skin from the sun and insects.

You'll need a sturdy pair of walking shoes, long and loose-fitting layers (think knee-length shorts, long pants and long-sleeved shirts, etc), a pair of sandals, a warm fleece, sun-protective gear (sunglasses, a wide-brimmed sunhat and sunscreen), and insect repellent. You'll also need a reusable water bottle, a day bag and maybe a headlamp if you're camping.

Is Kenya LGBTQIA+ friendly?

LGBTQIA+ travelers who want to visit Kenya should exercise caution and avoid engaging in public displays of affection. That said, even public displays of affection for hetero couples can raise eyebrows.

Homosexuality is still illegal in Kenya and can be punishable by prison time. The criminalization of same-sex relationships was acquired from Britain before Kenya was granted independence in 1963 and has not been reviewed since.

Kenyan society is largely conservative and identifying as LGBTQIA+ is often considered to be a taboo. There are also no laws to protect LGBTQIA+ people against discrimination.

Is Kenya accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Eden Reforestation Projects

Eden Reforestation Projects are helping to mitigate climate change by restoring forests worldwide; they also hire locally and create job opportunities within vulnerable communities. Donations from our trips support restoration across planting sites in 10 countries, including Kenya and Nepal.

A trip to Kenya is a step closer to viewing the African Lion, one of the Big 5 animals

The Big Five. Snow-capped mountains. Great rainforests. Beautiful beaches. Ancient history. An exciting cuisine. Invigorating experiences. That’s what each trip to Kenya has in store for you. Kenya isn’t just about wildlife. It also boasts of a rich and diverse history and culture. The country has always been famous for its eco-friendly safaris and is famous as the top tourist destination in Africa. Its national parks provide you the ideal opportunity to become a part of all kinds of activities that range from sunbathing and scuba diving to spa hopping and hiking. Holidays to Kenya is incomplete with a visit to Masai Maara, home to the Great Migration, is the most famous national park in Kenya, but Mount Kenya is equally enthralling.

Travel Highlights

  • Experience a walking safari at Amboseli National Park, and see the Big Five, and several species of bird.
  • Explore the geological marvel that is The Great Rift Valley.
  • Learn about the Maasai tribes, and even get the kids involved in the learning experience, at the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
  • Climb Mount Kenya, and see the view from the peak of a mountain.
  • Soak up some sunshine on the coast, at Diani, Nyali, or Lamu beaches.
  • Visit the islands off the coast of Kenya.
  • Visit Kenya’s neighbor, Tanzania, and climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Travel Tips

  • Be careful while eating meat, it can be unsettling for foreign stomachs due to quality or cooking method.
  • Bring your malaria pills! There is a high possibility you could get sick if you forget them.
  • Bugs can be more dangerous than big animals; bring bug spray and long sleeves and pants.
  • If you’re in Nairobi, be careful and ask your hostel which parts are safe for visitors.
  • Be prepared for hot weather, but also pack options; the weather can be a little unpredictable.
  • Never approach the wildlife, no matter how safe or docile they may seem.
  • Drink only bottled water.

Amazing Safari!!!! I recently embarked on a remarkable 6-day Safari to Maasai Mara and Serengeti National Park with Bon Voyage Safaris, and it was an experience that exceeded all my expectations. From start to finish, the trip was flawlessly organized, ensuring a seamless and unforgettable adventure. The knowledgeable and passionate guides truly made the journey exceptional. Their expertise and deep understanding of the wildlife and ecosystems enriched every moment of the safari. We witnessed awe-inspiring wildlife spectacles, including breathtaking lion sightings and the incredible wildebeest migration. The guides' ability to spot and interpret animal behavior was truly remarkable. Bon Voyage Safaris also took great care of our accommodations and meals. The lodges and tented camps we stayed in were luxurious, providing a comfortable and authentic safari experience. The delicious meals served showcased the flavors of the region and were a delightful complement to the overall journey. Overall, my 6-day Safari with Bon Voyage Safaris was an absolute dream come true. The company's attention to detail, exceptional guides, and unforgettable wildlife encounters made it an experience of a lifetime. I cannot recommend them highly enough for anyone seeking a truly exceptional African safari adventure.

Amboseli & Masai Mara Budget Safari By 4x4 Jeep

I am really glad we did the best African safari for family provided by Voyage Kenya Tanzania Safari. Kenya and Tanzania were such beautiful countries. Our Kenya safari tour operator and director Mr. John was wonderful. The 4-star luxury lodges in Masai Mara and Serengeti were beyond expectation with great activities for kids of all ages.

Masai Mara Camping Safari Tour

Masai Mara Camping Safari

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

7 Days, 6 Nights Safari To Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha And Amboseli With Complimentary First Night Accommodation at After 40 Hotel and free airport pickup.

We loved the variety of this tour - safari by vehicle, hot air balloon, bike, boat, and foot. The accommodations ranged from basic to good, so this tour is best for those who don’t need luxury accommodations, which we did not. The food was always very good and plentiful. We had 2 guides - Nathan and Tony, and both were excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and good drivers. The optional tours need to be updated on the description of the tour, as inflation has caused an increase in prices. The hot air balloon safari was $450/pp (a wonderful experience with a nice champagne picnic breakfast afterwards). The Massai village visit was $25/pp. We recommend both. Bring lots of cash for drinks, souvenirs, and tipping. We underestimated and ran out, but our guide made a stop at a bank for us to get more. Good communication and customer service from the tour company as well. Overall an incredible vacation. We will be back in Kenya in the future and would definitely use this company again.

I would highly recommend CKC Tours. John responded to all our queries promptly and went back and forth until we had an itinerary we were happy with. We were then met by John at the airport and given all the documentation for our trip which included lodges at Masai Mara and Amboseli and internal flights. It was all very easy and well organised. I also found it to be very competitively priced considering the service we received and the standard of accommodation.

6 Days Kenya Budget Small Group 4x4 Jeep Safari Tour

6 Days Kenya Budget Small Group 4x4 Jeep Safari

This safari was most excellent! Our driver/guide, Zack, was absolutely phenomenal! He was a wealth of knowledge about all the different wildlife, made every effort to ensure that we saw as much as we could and provided plenty of photo opportunities. I didn’t think it could get any better than the first day, but I was wrong! Overall, we saw 70+ species of wildlife in their natural habitat, to include a cheetah and 4 cubs! I truly enjoyed this unforgettable experience (including the food and culture)! Also, Albert was great at setting everything up, handled pre-safari hotel reservations, scheduled airport pickup and was very prompt with communication. If you’re looking for a safari adventure, I highly recommend Exciting Africa Holidays!

The best ways to get around in Kenya

Meera Dattani

kenya bus tour

Find your way around in Kenya with this guide to transportation © Mario Hagen / Shutterstock

From remote national parks and spectacular hikes to balmy coastal towns and the lively buzz of Nairobi , you'll want to experience all you can on a trip to Kenya .

Whether you take a taxi or hop into a matatu (minivan), this beautiful country is a relatively easy place to get around once you know your options.

For some journeys, it’s possible to travel slower and more sustainably. Sailing on a traditional dhow along the Kenyan coast or taking the train from Nairobi to Mombasa are great examples, and you’ll see so much more of the landscape on the way.

Here are our top tips for getting around Kenya, from the beaches to the Masai Mara .

A woman sits in the window seat of a bus looking out ahead at the road

Buses connect practically every town in Kenya

There's an extensive bus network connecting larger and smaller towns, especially in western Kenya , with frequent links to the capital and coast. You’ll find services are less frequent as you head into northern Kenya. Several private companies operate bus services around the country and, for the most part, these long-haul buses are comfortable, affordable, relatively fast and safe. The newer long-haul buses often have recliner seats, and some have wi-fi.

It's best to take bus journeys in daylight hours because of concerns over crime, so aim for morning departures for long trips. Companies such as Modern , Dreamline , Coast Bus and The Guardian Coach are reliable, but that list of bus companies is not exhaustive, so ask around when making a particular journey – the company you choose will often depend on the route you’re after.

Travel slowly and take the train for long trips in Kenya

If you’ve got the time and you’re heading to Mombasa from Nairobi or vice versa, take the train . The Madaraka Express passenger train operates three times a day, including a non-stop night train, with journey times of between five and six hours.

In the days of British colonial rule, this was a sleeper train that took 15 hours. It became widely known as the "Lunatic Express" because of the harsh conditions workers were forced to endure while building it, such as attacks by dangerous animals and the spread of tropical diseases.

The track passes through some of the most beautiful parts of the country, especially as you move through the Tsavo East and Tsavo West national parks, and there's even a glimpse of Kilimanjaro along the way.

You can also travel to Nanyuki from Nairobi by train. The trip takes seven hours, traveling via Thika, but it's a scenic way to get to the gateway town for trips to Mt Kenya National Park . A weekly Kisumu Safari Train goes from Nairobi to the town of Kisumu on the shores of Lake Victoria every Friday at 6:30pm and returns to Nairobi on Sunday at 6:30pm.

Matatus are privately run shared minibuses

It won’t be everyone’s first choice of transport, but matatus (shared minibuses) are the most used form of public transport in Kenya for locals, especially in Nairobi, although they are slowly being phased out in favor of more regulated, larger-capacity buses.

These privately owned vehicles leave when full – which often means full to the point of discomfort – but if you get lucky with a less-packed vehicle, it’s a fun way to travel short distances, such as within the downtown area and suburbs of Nairobi. Fares are fixed and affordable, and you pay the driver or conductor on board.

Matatus are often colorfully painted, sometimes with slogans or portraits of famous people, and many have music blaring out. Some even have free wi-fi and movies or pop videos playing. Safety issues can be a concern: there are rules about seat belts for example, but they’re not always followed, and the quality of driving is variable.

For safety reasons, it’s best to take a matatu with other travelers you know and to only use them in the daytime for urban travel. Always lock your luggage and keep valuables with you. Avoid the front seat next to the driver because of the risk of collisions.

For faster urban hops, take a shared taxi, aka Peugeot

An alternative to matatus is the shared taxi or "Peugeot." These station wagons take around seven to nine passengers and, like matatus, they leave when they’re full. The upside is they’re rarely over-crowded, and they don’t stop between the start and end points. You’ll generally find shared taxis running on fixed routes in north and west Kenya.

Busy traffic on the streets of Nairobi, Kenya

Use ride-hailing apps to get from A to B

Uber ,  Bolt  and the local option Hava have had huge success in Kenya, especially in urban centers such as Nairobi. Make sure you download and set up an account on the app if you don’t already use it and, if possible, add a payment card that doesn’t charge extra for overseas transactions (fares will be calculated in Kenyan shillings).

With so many drivers available, the apps make finding a lift incredibly easy, plus you can share your journey information with friends or family as an added safety consideration. Uber has also launched UberASSIST for passengers with disabilities, highlighting drivers who can offer extra help and whose cars are equipped for wheelchairs.

Take a traditional taxi

Taxis are in plentiful supply in major towns and cities. You can usually find them at taxi ranks around tourist attractions, bus stations and other key areas. They’re not always metered though, so ensure you agree on the fare in advance. Where possible, get an idea of what a journey from X to Y should approximately cost – ask at your accommodation or quiz your guide.

Taxis are great for longer-distance journeys as an alternative to flights; if you’re in Mombasa and want to get up to Kilifi , Malindi or down to Diani Beach , it's the easiest option. When split between a few people, they can be incredibly good value, with the bonus that you can pick your departure time and stop when you need to. At night, it’s advisable to take a taxi back to your hotel in cities rather than walk.

Road trip with your own wheels to reach remote areas and national parks

Driving in Kenya is a great choice if you want the ultimate freedom to explore, stop off and be spontaneous. But if you want to take on Kenya’s roads yourself, being prepared is key. You must have an international driving license as well as your national one, and you usually need to be at least 23 years old, though some car hire companies have a minimum age of 25. It helps to know the vehicle (4WDs are best for national park trips where roads are often unpaved and challenging in wet weather) and know how to change a tire, because breakdown assistance can be slow if you’re not on a main stretch of road.

All main roads out of Nairobi are paved, and surfaced single-lane highways are common. Being a confident driver will help because the rules of the road tend to be “each to their own.” For safety, only drive during the day when in areas you’re not familiar with, or that are known to be unsafe because of carjacking and other crimes – though perceptions of the risk are often higher than the reality. It's also best to avoid nighttime driving because of poor lighting and road conditions, such as potholes and unpaved roads in some areas.

Check up-to-date guidance from your government or with local guides or contacts at your accommodation on areas to avoid. Be very careful when parking overnight – never leave anything valuable in your vehicle and seek out secure, guarded parking.

Safari operators can arrange transfers to your next destination

If you’re booking an organized safari, it’s worth knowing that some companies can take care of transport between your start and end points, depending on the route and distances. For example, if you’re starting your trip in Nairobi, operators can pick you up for a transfer to Tsavo National Park, then take you on to Mombasa for the beach component of your vacation at the end of your safari. It’s time-saving and can also save on the cost of organizing separate taxis, flights or vehicle transfers.

Have a boda-boda experience to zip through Kenyan traffic

You’ll find motorcycle taxis called boda-bodas in most towns and cities in Kenya, especially where there aren’t as many standard taxis. Boda-bodas are cheap, great at weaving in and out of traffic, and plentiful, but they have a poor safety record. Helmets are not always offered and regulation is sporadically enforced.

Boda-bodas are best for those who are already comfortable on motorbikes; ride during the day for personal safety reasons and because of the local road conditions. The majority of boda-boda drivers are responsible, but the nature of this form of transport means you should stay alert if you’re not a regular rider.

Jump into a tuk-tuk

Tuk-tuks (autorickshaws) aren’t widespread in Kenya, but you’ll find them in abundance in Malindi, north of Mombasa on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast. These covered, open-sided vehicles are a great way to get around, but you should negotiate the fare with the driver if there isn’t a meter. You may also find tuk-tuks in Nairobi, Mombasa, Diani Beach and Nakuru.

A traditional sailing vessel passes a beach

Sail along the coast by dhow for carbon-free travel

It’s not really a form of public transport – more of an experience – but nothing beats taking a dhow (ancient Arabic sailing vessel) to explore Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline. This is a slow and quiet way to appreciate life on the Kenyan coast and the offshore islands.

You can book dhow trips from the beach towns and resorts of Mombasa, Watamu and Diani Beach, and from Lamu and Shela in the Lamu archipelago. For a cruise-like experience, request a catered sailing or bring your own drinks and snacks. Trips can range from a couple of hours at sunset to hiring a dhow for a full day to visit different beaches and bays.

Take the ferry to cross rivers and reach islands

To travel between Mombasa Island and the mainland to the southwest, the ferry is a scenic way to cross the Likoni Channel and enjoy views of the Indian Ocean. It’s a popular choice for people traveling to the beach resorts of Diani and Galu, south of Mombasa, and it’s a lively experience as well, with the opportunity to chat with fellow passengers. Just take care with your belongings on the crowded ferries.

Five ferries are operational: MV Nyayo , MV Harambee , MV Kilindini , MV Likoni and MV Kwale , and plans are afoot to introduce more boats. It’s free for passengers and cyclists, with a small charge for motorists and motorcyclists.

A sandy palm-lined beach

Take the plane if time’s an issue

Flying is never the most sustainable option, but several domestic airlines provide handy connections between Nairobi, Mombasa, other coastal towns such as Malindi and the Lamu Archipelago , and smaller airports close to national parks. Nearly a dozen airlines connect these destinations, including Kenya Airways , and some fly to just three or four popular national parks, such as the Masai Mara, from Nairobi.

The relative affordability of domestic air travel makes it appealing and often unavoidable – current safety guidance to Kenya from the UK government, for example, advises that people travel to the Lamu Archipelago by air rather than going via Lamu County. Taking the bus, train or driving are better alternatives for certain journeys, but some of the more remote lodges are only accessible via a chartered plane, which comes at a price.

Accessible transportation in Kenya

Getting around by public transport in Kenya hasn’t always been easy for travelers with mobility issues because of a lack of investment. Things are changing, albeit slowly. Some rapid transit bus services have wheelchair spaces and a ramp to assist boarding, plus priority seating for the elderly, pregnant and other travelers who need them.

Uber has rolled out UberASSIST in Nairobi, using drivers who’ve been trained to help people getting into vehicles that have spaces for folding wheelchairs and walkers. Depending on your needs, it’s the willingness of local people to help that can be the savior of a trip to Kenya.

It’s easier for travelers with disabilities to arrange private transport. Always let the guide, travel company and driver know what you need, whether it’s physical assistance, a ramp, extra storage or safety clamps to secure wheelchairs. For more information on accessible travel, see Lonely Planet's Accessible Travel Resources .

I will also explain how to get the Uganda visa as it is not available at the border. I have made this trip a couple of times. In this guide, I’ll share my experience.

Bus in Kenya

How to Buy Bus Tickets Between Nairobi and Kampala

I recommend you go down to the bus station at least a day in advance to buy your ticket. This route is pretty popular so the buses do fill up. The bus I was on was fully booked so I was glad that I already had my ticket. Remember to bring your passport with you when you go to buy your ticket. It is required for booking.

Tickets for this route can be purchased in cash at the ticket offices in Nairobi and Kampala. It may be possible to buy tickets online from some bus companies. If you’re buying your ticket in Kenya, you’ll probably have to pay with M-Pesa. This involves creating an account. If you’re purchasing your ticket in Uganda, you may be able to pay with MTN Mobile Money.

Which Bus Company to Go With?

This is a popular route. Several companies offering bus service between Nairobi and Kampala. Really, they are all more or less the same. If one has a more convenient departure time or a better price, go with them. From what I saw, prices are all about the same. Bus companies include:

  • MASH Bus (Mash Poa)
  • Modern Coast

There are probably more companies as well but these are the main four. I made the trip with Mash Bus. I was happy with the service. Their buses are new and comfortable. The service is safe and reliable. I can recommend them.

Downtown Nairobi

Where To buy Bus Tickets In Nairobi

Nairobi doesn’t really have a central bus station. Each company has an office where you buy your ticket and catch the bus. Unfortunately, these offices are located all over the city. Most are found within the CBD. Some are in Eastleigh. It is possible to walk around a bit and check pricing and departure times because most offices are within the same general area.

For the exact location of the ticket offices either click the following Google Maps links or copy and paste the plus code into Google Maps.

  • Mash Bus- The ticket office is located in Nairobi CBD on the corner of Duruma Road and Accra Road. (PR9G+5X Nairobi, Kenya)
  • Modern Coast- The ticket office is located in Nairobi CBD on Cross Lane. (PR9H+65 Nairobi, Kenya)
  • Easy Coach- The ticket office is located at PR6H+CC Nairobi, Kenya
  • Dreamline- The ticket office is located at PR9G+6X Nairobi, Kenya

You can get to the bus ticketing office in Nairobi by taxi, Uber, matatu shared bus, or on foot if you’re staying downtown.

Where to Buy Bus Tickets in Kampala

All of the bus ticket offices are conveniently located in the same general area on De Winton Street in central Kampala. When you go to buy your ticket, you can easily check the departure times and prices for each of the following companies and choose the most convenient and best value bus.

  • Mash Bus- The ticket office is located at 8H8Q+3R Kampala, Uganda
  • Modern Coast- The ticket office is located at 8H8Q+2P Kampala, Uganda
  • Easy Coach- The ticket office is located at 8H8R+JQ Kampala, Uganda
  • Dreamline- The ticket office is located at 8H8Q+4V Kampala, Uganda

You can get to the bus ticketing office in Kampala by taxi, boda boda motorcycle taxi, rideshare, or on foot.

Kampala Uganda

Bus Ticket Prices Between Nairobi and Kampala

The average price for this trip is about $20-$25 depending on the company and class that you choose. The more expensive buses offer air conditioning. VIP seats are also available. These seats are larger and recline further which makes sleeping a bit easier.

The air-conditioned version of MASH bus is called MASH COOL. The non AC bus is called MASH POA.

Nairobi to Kampala Busses

Mash Bus offers this route two times every day. One leaves at 5:00 pm and one leaves at 6:30 pm. There are 3 ticket options for the 5 pm MASH POA bus:

  • VIP class costs 2,600 KES
  • Business class costs 2,400 KES
  • Regular economy class costs 2000 KES.

There are 2 ticket options for the 6:30 pm MASH COOL bus.

  • VIP class costs 3,500 KES
  • Business class costs 2,500 KES.

I went with business class on the 6:30 pm bus. All of the seats looked exactly the same to me. I don’t know if different classes actually exist or they are just trying to upsell tickets for more money. Who knows? Next time, I’d just buy an economy class ticket.

Kampala to Nairobi Bus

Mash Bus offers two buses. One at 5:00 pm and one at 6:00 pm. There are 3 ticket options for the 5 pm MASH POA bus:

  • VIP class costs 90,000 UGX
  • Business class costs 80,000 UGX
  • Regular economy class costs 65,000 UGX

There are 2 ticket options for the 6:00 pm MASH COOL bus.

  • VIP class costs 120,000 UGX
  • Business class costs 85,000 UGX

Modern Coast also offers this route two times every day. Once at 7:00 pm and one at 8:00 pm. Tickets cost about 85,000 UGX. Dreamline also offers tickets for about 65,000 UGX.

Bus Departure Times Between Nairobi and Kampala

Most companies travel this route by night. Each company has a slightly different departure time between about 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm. There is probably a bus departing about every 30 minutes from somewhere in the cities during that time frame.

Morning buses are also available. They travel all day and arrive at night. Most companies offer one morning bus per day departing at around 7:00 or 8:00 am.

The ride from Nairobi to Kampala takes about 12-14 hours depending on traffic and how long the border crossing takes. My bus left Nairobi at 6:30 pm and arrived in Kampala the following morning at around 7:00 am.

I always choose a night bus if it is available as it saves me the cost of a night of accommodation and I am usually able to sleep through at least part of the ride. Traffic is usually less of a problem at night so the ride goes slightly faster.

Getting the Uganda Visa

Before you leave Nairobi, you’ll need to arrange your visa for Uganda. The visa is not available on arrival at the border. Uganda offers an online e-visa service. Surprisingly, this process is quick and efficient. Just go to the Uganda visa website here and fill out the application. When you submit the application, you will need to attach:

  • A scanned copy or photo of your passport
  • A scanned copy or photo of your yellow fever vaccine certificate
  • One passport-sized photo.

The visa costs $50 and there is a small processing fee. I think it was about $2.50. For $100, you can buy the East Africa visa which allows travel between Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda for 90 days. My visa was approved the day after I applied. You can pay by credit or debit card.

After your visa is approved, you will need to print out the confirmation paper that they email you. This is required at the border to prove that you have paid for your visa. It ended up taking me over an hour to find an internet cafe with a working printer on a Sunday in Nairobi but I eventually got the page printed.

The Kenya Visa

Visas are available on arrival at the border in Kenya. The cost is $50 for 90 days. The visa must be paid for in USD. Some borders offer the East Africa Visa. Be sure to verify that you can still get a visa on arrival before you travel. I have read that Kenya is considering doing away with it and just issuing e-Visas. If you’d prefer to have your visa when you arrive, you can apply for a Kenya e-Visa here.

For more information on visas, check out my African Visa Guide.

The Border Crossing Between Kenya and Uganda

We crossed the border at the Busia crossing sometime in the middle of the night. It went pretty smooth and the wait wasn’t too long. We were probably at the border for a little over an hour. When I presented my visa acceptance printout to the Ugandan immigration official, he just stamped my passport and sent me on my way.

Make sure you have your yellow fever certificate when you cross this border in either direction. It is an entry requirement for both countries. Usually, they don’t ask to see it but you need to have one just in case.

If you have leftover currency, you can exchange it at the border. Make sure you check the exchange rate first so you don’t get ripped off. The currency change guys love to shortchange foreigners.

Staying Safe

Overall, this route is pretty safe. The bus companies listed above operate a professional and reliable service. According to the Mash bus website, they vision test their drivers every 12 months. They also test their driver’s blood alcohol level before each shift to ensure that they aren’t driving under the influence. Their busses also use speed governors to prevent speeding.

With this being said, bus accidents do happen in Africa. Really, the best thing you can do to avoid injury in the event of an accident is to choose your seat wisely. The safest place on the bus is near the center in an aisle seat. You also want to be on the opposite side of the bus to oncoming traffic.

I also recommend you watch out for pickpockets. Most people you meet on the bus are friendly but there are bad guys everywhere. My phone was pickpocketed on a minibus in Tanzania but luckily I was able to get it back.

For more info on safety, check out my guide: Is Uganda Safe? For more general safety information, check out my guide: Is Travel in Africa Safe? Avoiding Crime, Injury, Disease, and Scams .

Luggage on the Bus

Officially, the luggage limit is 15 kilos. You are allowed one large backpack or suitcase and one smaller personal item. Large luggage is stored under the bus. I prefer to have it with me on the bus but there just wasn’t space. Baggage handlers tag your luggage and place it under the bus for you. It seemed secure enough.

With this being said, I recommend you take any valuables or fragile items with you into the bus just to be safe. Try to keep an eye on the luggage compartment when people are exiting the bus if you can.

If you have excess luggage, you may be charged a small fee. It really depends on the driver and baggage handlers. Most times, they don’t seem to care how much stuff people had with them.

Food and Drink

Because this bus travels by night, it doesn’t make any meal stops. Try to eat dinner before catching the bus. You can grab breakfast after you arrive in Kampala in the morning.

I recommend you make a stop at the supermarket before boarding the bus and pick up some snacks for the ride. I like to bring some cookies, bananas, bread, and a jar of peanut butter just in case I get hungry.

Rolex in Uganda

Facilities and Bathrooms on the Bus

Most of the buses don’t have bathrooms. The drivers don’t make many bathroom stops either. Sometimes only once every 6 hours or so. I recommend you try to limit your liquid intake during the ride. You may not have many opportunities to use the bathroom after the journey gets started.

Most of the buses have electrical outlets for charging your devices. In my experience, these usually don’t work. If you want to use your phone during the trip, consider bringing a power bank.

Arriving in Kampala

The bus arrived at around 7 am. We sat in traffic for a couple of hours before making it to the center of the city. The Mash Bus station is located on De Winton Street kind of near Said Barre Avenue.

It is just a block off Jinja Road which is a main road in Kampala. From there, minibusses and taxis are available which can take you anywhere in the city or if your destination is in the city center, you can just walk. You’ll also find ATMs, restaurants, and hotels within walking distance of the bus station.

Arriving in Nairobi

The bus will drop you off in the CBD. If you’re arriving early in the morning or late at night, you’ll probably want to take a taxi or Uber to your hotel or hostel. The area isn’t particularly dangerous but it’s probably best not to walk around with all of your travel gear just in case. Within walking distance of the bus stations, you can find ATMs and restaurants.

What to Expect Traveling from Nairobi to Kampala by Bus: My Experience

The bus leaves from the same place you bought the ticket. Most bus companies offer a small waiting room where you can sit if you arrive early. I recommend you just camp out in there until the bus arrives as the street is quite busy with people who will try to sell you stuff or potentially run scams.

If someone on the street approaches you and tries to tell you that the tickets are sold out, don’t believe them. Go into the ticketing office and see for yourself. These guys are just trying to sell you a ticket on a lower class bus and earn a commission.

The buses I rode was air-conditioned and was overall in decent condition. It was surprisingly comfortable. You may want to bring a sweatshirt as the AC got cold at night. It was probably one of the best buses that I rode in Africa.

The bus left Nairobi on time and Arrived in Kampala at around 7 the following morning. It was around a 12-hour ride from Nairobi to Kampala.

Final Thoughts

Overall this trip is pretty hassle-free and comfortable by African bus standards. The bus was in good condition, had AC, and arrived on time. Everyone I encountered along the way acted professionally including the immigration officials and bus company employees.

If you’re trying to decide between flying and taking the bus, I recommend you save the money and take the bus. Flying between the two cities will cost $200-$300. The bus ticket costs as little as $20. For those traveling Africa on a budget, the savings is significant.
