Why our 2-day tour?

Even though not the longest tour duration we have on offer, it is still double the time compared to a standard daytrip. And that means you double your chances to see wildlife. Khao Yai definitely deserves a multiday visit.

Tour itinerary

Here follows the itinerary of our 2-day tour in Khao Yai national park . Note: Often enough, our itineraries get turned upside down. It is impossible to plan in nature; the wildlife does not follow timetables, therefore the following itinerary is just a rough example.

Day 1 (08:00 to ±20:30)

In the morning, we drive into the park and keep our eyes open for animals that we see or hear along the road. It is not uncommon that there are a couple stops on the way in to observe the creatures that the guide managed to spot whilst driving.

Next on the itinerary is a walk in the jungle. Besides searching for wildlife, the guide will also explain more about specific trees or edible plants.

After the walk, it's time for lunch at a park restaurant. And after that we'll drive deeper into the park. Along the way we'll stop at a beautiful waterfall, but both on the way to, as well as around the waterfall, the search for animals never stops.

A Northern Pig-tailed Macaque crossing a river

The late afternoon is typically the best time to see big wildlife like elephants at saltlicks, and other clearings in the forest. Though, we need to add that elephants are certainly not a guarantee in Khao Yai. Even though not rare, they definitely don't show up every day. But of course there is also a chance to see all kinds of other creatures.

After dinner, it's time for a night drive. With a large spotlight we'll try to spot the animals that are active at night. After this activity, you'll be dropped off at your hotel.

Day 2 (08:00 to ±18:00)

Black Giant Squirrel feeding in the trees

Broadly speaking, the second day is similar in structure as the first day, but excluding the night safari and dinner. Different locations are visited, and we'll walk a different trail. This will increase the chance of seeing some different species than on the first day.

For the final activity of the last day you have the choice between a late-afternoon safari drive or visiting the daily bat migration.

The guide will bring you back to your hotel or meet the taxi for onward travelling.

We had a great time with tontan travel. We were with our 2-year-old daughter and because of that we could not do all the walks. But Mr. M came up with other great options. Mr. M knows a lot about the animals. And he is good with children! He also took beautiful pictures of us during the tour so that we will never forget it. It was amazing! Thanks Mr. M for the good times.

Our two day tour in Khao Yao National Park was a highlight of our Thailand visit. Our guide Tata was excellent. He ensured we saw a variety of animals including elephants, Hornbills, the Lar Gibbon and a water dragon to name a few. Tata’s English was very good and he was always conscious of our well being and safety. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Tata as a guide when you are visiting the park.

Alex was our guide in a 2-day wildlife tour at Kao Yai National Park. He was very calm, patient and atentive. We were lucky to see many hornbills, at least three families of gibbons, porcupines, lizards, deers, gaus and elephants twice! This wildlife tour is totally worth. I highly recommend it!

Had the absolute best time during our tour with your fantastic team! From the pickup to the trekking to the delicious food, we could not have been happier! We were able to capture some amazing photos and experience so many animals - including a day time porcupine, many civet cats and jackals, pit vipers and more! We will definitely be recommending you to any friends who plan to visit Thailand, and will revisit hopefully in the near future!

We have had an AMAZING time in Khao Yai National Park! We have seen a lot of animals and were lucky to closely follow a gibbonfamily with hiking. Leg and Tata, thanks for sharing your knowledge and being part of these special memories. Keep doing your work this passionately guys. Due to that, we‘ll never forget these valuable moments in the park.

We had an awesome time on our wildlife tour on the first day and our birding tour on the second. Our guides were professional, friendly, thoughtful and knowledgeable. Overall, the tours were unforgettable experiences in which we got up close and personal with the many creatures that Khao Yai National Park has to offer - gibbons, snakes, birds, deer, etc. We hope to come back again!

Great Hornbill male

Thanks Stephanie for taking the time to write this review. We are happy to hear you enjoyed both your tours. And of course you are very welcome to return some beautiful day in the future.

Tontan were very helpful when booking the 2 day trip in Khao Yai. We got prompt emails. We had a guide called Apple. He tried very hard to make our trek in the jungle rewarding. Unfortunately it rained the second day so we did not see much but our trek was very good although some of our group who had not been in the jungle before found it very tiring. I asked Tontan to give us a long trek in the jungle and they certainly did, maybe a little bit too long. However we still saw Hornbills, black giant squirrel, gibbons . On the night safari we were lucky enough to see a elephant grazing, a porcupine and civet cat. On the whole we were lucky to see animals on the first day. Some of our party said that they would like to have learnt more about the plants and ecosystems in the park especially when the rain spoiled the second day. Overall, you can see the park is a stunning place and well worth coming for a few days if you can afford it.

I came to this tour with expectations so high that I would have thought it would be difficult to exceed them. Yet somehow, TonTan managed it. Beer, our guide, was incredibly knowledgeable, and had an amazing ability to pick a path through seemingly trackless jungle. He, along with the excellent driver whose name I should have written down (I'm so sorry about that...lovely guy- very patient) made us feel welcome and safe at all times. The driver even seemed more amused than annoyed by my penchant of jumping out of the truck before he could open the back every time Beer found something interesting...which happened a lot. I feel very lucky to have been paired with a guide who shares my passion for herps, despite me never mentioning this when making the reservation. Even better, he still took the time to acquaint us with so many diverse inhabitants of the jungle, from Lantern Bugs and Sphinx Moths to Kingfishers and White-handed Gibbons. Best of all, he expressed the same enthusiasm for these things that we were feeling, despite no doubt seeing them far more frequently than we do. What really stays with me, though, as much as all the wonderful things we got to see on our too-brief two day tour in Khao Yai, is that by watching Beer in action, I feel I learned to see better, and to be a better naturalist, than I was before. TonTan is a tour company, surely, but they are also a lifelong education company, and for that I cannot recommend them highly enough. All the best, Jim Maughn and Jessica Breheny

Our Guide Mr Beer was excellent and really did a great job spotting all the birds, gibbons, elephants and even the now famous selfie croc. The pick up and returns to and from BKK were smooth and on time as were all your quick email replies which we really appreciate. Hopefully we will get to return in future. Yours Jim & Uma

Hi Ton & Tan, Thank you so much for your help. And for squeezing us in. Also, just wanted to say... We had such an amazing time! It has been the highlight of our trip so far. We had an amazing guide and he really went out of his way to show us the different aspects of the park. We got to see way more than we expected to see, from elephants to butterfly's to crocodiles. He explained the lifestyles of the animals and also the plants in a fun way that intrigued us at every step on the way. And was more knowledgeable than we could have ever expected. He also had a great sense of humour and had amazing English capabilities. He went out of his way to help us experience the Thai jungle and understand the creatures. It was an unforgettable experience. Furthermore, you as a company have been great to communicate with and have made the whole experience as a whole easier to manage and find our way, for example, we couldn't find our way in pak Chong and our accomodation found someone who could speak English to ring us back asap and explained how to get there in the quickest most affordable way (with several options). So a big thanks from us kiwis and we will definitely be recommending your company to family and friends for the future.

Thank you so much for your feedback. We're happy to hear that you had a great experience in the park with our guide. And thanks in advance for recommending us to your friends and family. Best of luck! Tontan Travel

Plus we had great conversation and overall a very pleasant time. The food was also yummy. Thank you Nang for making our visit to Khao Yai the best part of our Thailand trip! from Heather, Liz, Jimmy, Jaimie and Shannon.

Hello Ton, we would like to take the opportunity to thank you and your/our guide (unfortunately I forgot the name - do you know who was it, so we maybe can mention it in a Tripadvisor recommendation) for this amazing two days. It have been two days far away from "mass tourism processing" as we've experienced it in Krabi (-> Island tour) and it were two very interesting, amazing but also relaxing days. It was definitely the right decision to book a private tour, because it allowed us to be very flexible and hereby we could see many different kind of animals very closely. Our guide gave us many information about the national park, the behaviour and characteristics of the animals and made many pictures for us. Furthermore (big plus, not expected) he knew almost all the names of the animals or trees in German (our mother tongue). Thank you again, Andreas, Michael, Ivan

Hi Andreas, Michael, & Ivan, Thank you for your message. Great to hear you enjoyed your trip with our guide Tata. We will thank him on your behalf! Thanks!

This Xmas holiday we did a two day tour with guide 'Beer' from Tontan in Khao Yai. It was a bull's eye decision. Beer has an amazing eye for the many birds, mammals and reptiles in the park. Even from a riding car he'll find the tiniest snake *under* a leaf at the side of the road. And no matter how good an adult elephant can hide in the forest, Beer will spot 'em! (Or was it that big, wet fart of the elephant that gave it away ;-) A big thank you from Rob, Manon, Merel and Brechtje

Lazy afternoon for this gibbon

Even een rijtje?

Hello! We are Sabrina and Luigi and we had a two days tour in the jungle last 6th and 7th of August. Our guide was Nang. We would like to thank you, and in particular Nang, for this great and unforgettable experience. We spent two beautiful days in the park, we had very adventurous experience and everything was really great. We saw many beautiful animals as insects, birds, monkeys. Nang is very passionate of nature and animals, thanks to her knowledge we could see and hear a lot of nature. We also had the chance to take great pictures, one of them is the one I send you in this mail. It is the one showing the three of us and we would like to share it. Hopefully you can share it with Nang. So, thanks again to you and Nang!!! cheers Sabrina and Luigi

We are a family of 5, with two adults and three children in the age of 6, 9 and 11. On our two-day tour with TONTAN Travel in Khao Yai we saw many animals, from monkeys and elephants to bats, spiders, many different birds and even a crocodile! The best thing about the tour was Ton’s enthusiasm for nature and animals in general. He has got such a good eye for spotting animals and as a result, you see much more wildlife than you would see on your own! If you go to Khao Yai just to see a waterfall, you do not need a guided tour. But if you would like to see the wildlife and to really get an insight into this wonderful national park, booking a tour at TONTAN would definitely be a very good choice! During our holiday, we were in Bangkok, Khao Yai, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai and we have been in the south at Phuket (swimming pool and sea). When we asked our children what they liked best about our holiday, the tour at Khao Yai proved to be their highlight! Kind regards, Mark & the family

Thank you for your addition to our guestbook. Nice to hear it was the children's highlight of their Thailand holiday. The children are the future, them enjoying nature can only be positive in the future when they might have to make decisions to protect it. Thanks for joining us and greetings to all of you! Dear Tan, dear Tony, more than 6 weeks ago we have visited Khao Yai together with you. We are all back at work or at school, but still we are talking about our exciting trip and the fantastic time which we had together with you. For sure the two days on safari, on the back of your Jeep or walking in the jungle will always last in our memories. The night safari with all the different animals including the owl, the hunting snake catching the lizard, the gecko family including babies and eggs und finally the successful search for the elephant - all this made these two days the highlight of our holiday in Thailand. Even the leeches are now a good story to tell :-) We also very much enjoyed your hospitality and the stories you told us about the animals! I also would like to thank you very much for the perfect organization of the taxi pick-up and drop-off from our hotel in Bangkok and the booking of the Jungle House. These arrangements made our trip so much easier for us. Thank you again for everything - we definitely enjoyed it. Helmut, Irmi, Philip and Paula

Hi Philip, Paula, Irmi, & Helmut, Thanks for leaving this message in our guestbook. We're glad to hear you're still talking about your trip to Khao Yai, that's a good sign! It was fun exploring the park with you. As a reptile-lover seeing the snake hunt and catch the little dragon was my personal highlight. Not something you witness every day! Thanks again for posting your experience, and if you ever come back to Thailand you know where to find us ;). Best wishes, Tony & Tan

Groetjes, Tan & Ton

Dear Tony and Tan, Thanks so much for hosting all seven of us (my husband and three children and my parents from New Zealand) in March this year. We had an absolutely amazing time and our 2 days with you was a highlight of Mum and Dad's trip. Tony's unbelievable proficiency at spotting even the smallest of creatures is extraordinary (but you should wear sunglasses!), beautifully balanced by Tan's calm presence and kindness to our children. We made a list of our favourites, and the top 5 were the giant porcupine, great hornbill, green pit viper, the civet, and of course in top place, the elephant. You both went to such a great effort to help us see these animals - thanks so much.

Thanks for leaving us a beautiful message in our guestbook. We enjoyed the trip with you, and are glad your wish to see wild elephants came true, three separate sightings; 2 solitary bulls and a herd of about 10 elephants. Very lucky! And I've followed your mum's advice! At least when the sun is very bright. I'm using a pair of sunglasses we've found in the jungle, haha. Thanks for joining us and hope to meet you again!

We have seen owls, porcupines, a venomous snake, turtle, wild elephant, crocodile, thousands and thousands of bats (in just a few minutes!!) many birds and of course Ton's enthousiasm and knowledge and Tan's humor and thai smile

Dear Tan and Ton, Though it has been 2 months, the experience I had with u at Khao Yai still remains vivid and was awesome! The entire 2days 1night tour was remarkable. Never did you miss a chance to spot the slightest movement of the monkeys moving high up in the branches with your hawk eye, nor did you miss the call outs of the various species around. You made sure I did not miss out any great opportunity in catching a glimpse of any wildlife in hiding too! I have learnt many new things as you shared your knowledge from trees to land and the species we met. Your thoughtfulness and sensitivity made me felt comfortable and safe during the trip. Your sincerity, passion and love for nature made you a unique tour guide. Needless to say…. TonTanTravel is on my top list for recommendation! With Great Appreciation, Clara

Hi Clara & Nakao, Thank you for this wonderful message in our guestbook. We appreciate it that even 2 months later, you still think about us. We're glad to hear that you've enjoyed the trip. If you ever come back to Thailand, you're always welcome to come by! Thanks, Tan & Ton

Ton & Tan are wonderful hosts in this pristine nature park. Their extensive knowledge on flora and fauna is accompanied by excellent observation skills. This resulted in a very informative and fun experience. Apart from seeing rare species, such as an elephant and a crocodile, it was also a joy to spend 2 days with these kind people. We highly recommend a Ton Tan tour!

Hi Tan and Tony, It was such an amazing trip, you guys have excellent animal spotting skills which I never ever experienced during any of my other wildlife trips. As you know we were on a business trip, all my colleagues enjoyed it too. I look forward to visit again with my family... The bat cave experience is a once in a life time opportunity. Big thanks to the guide (Tata) and Pi Noy, too. Cheers

Hi Muzamil, Thank you for your message. We'll pass your comment on to Tata and we welcome you to come back with your family, somewhere in the future. Best wishes!

Tan, I and My wife, are thankful to you, Jay, and Poo for a wonderful experience in the wild for two days. Our trip was a grand success which my wife and I enjoyed every bit of. We did a trek in the rains, spotted lots of wild life and some birds. We spotted a herd of elephants on one day and a couple of them on another. Great sights, good food, wonderful accomodation in the tents, it was a marvellous trip. Thank you for organizing it for us. Since I dont have Jay's email id with me right now, I can not send this to him directly. Please convey my thanks to him and Poo too. Thanks once again. Srik

We did an overnight camping weekend with Ton and Tan. Our 8 year old loved them both because they went out of their way to make it enjoyable for us (it probably helped that Tan was so pretty ;-). Ton was constantly on the lookout for animals and birds and at one point he leapt out of the songthaew when he heard a gibbon calling out. He tracked it down and we spent an hour by the river just watching and listening. This is what we loved. It felt like a very personal experience not a cynical tourist one. He even apologised for not seeing all the animals - that is how much he wanted to make it a good trip. Driving back in the dark after our visit to the bat caves Kepler (the 8 year old) without being prompted said "I hope we can come back again one day" and I said something like "To see some more of the animals?" And he replied "Yes... but mostly because I like Ton and Tan". I think that is the best recommendation of all. Anyway I can honestly say they will do their very best to make your trip just what you want.

Clear spring.

Hi Guy, Kepler & Sarah, Thank you for posting in our guestbook. Glad to hear you enjoyed the trip. It was a special experience, visiting the park on this particular national holiday - the King's birthday. The camping looked like a camping ground on a rock festival, haha. Enjoy your time in Thailand, and we hope to meet you again in the future. All the best!

This New 'White Lotus'-caliber Resort Is an Unspoiled Paradise Away From the Crowds of Phuket

While the forthcoming season of the show films at its sister property, Anantara Koh Yao Yai Resort & Villas offers the rare chance to experience southern Thailand without the crowds.

How to get the most value out of your stay.

I’ve never planned a vacation around the filming locations of a television show, but if there’s one show that could convert me, it’s "The White Lotus." When HBO announced season three would film in Phuket, Koh Samui, and Bangkok, Expedia saw searches for Thailand jump by  50 percent . Dubbed the "The White Lotus" effect , the show has the power to turn its filming locations into coveted destinations; after season one, the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea in Hawaii saw a 425 percent year-over-year increase in web traffic.

But even before the announcement that "The White Lotus" would film at the Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas , Phuket was already Thailand’s busiest island . Home to Kata and Karon, two of the world’s most popular beaches, Thailand’s largest island can see as many as 118 tourists per resident . As a result, visions of a deserted island surrounded by turquoise water, as depicted in the 2000 film "The Beach," look more like crowded beaches. With a tourism economy that dates back to the 1970s , Phuket struggles to retain its original allure — which is why I’ve never wanted to go — until I discovered one of the last remaining pockets of unspoiled paradise: the island of Koh Yao Yai.

Instead of visiting the Phuket filming location of "The White Lotus" — the Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas — I took a 30-minute boat ride to another lush island, fringed with friendly fishing villages. Here, I had the beach all to myself at the newest Anantara property in the country, the Anantara Koh Yao Yai Resort & Villas , which opened at the end of 2023. Occupying a secluded stretch of pristine white sand beach with limestone islets dotting the Andaman Sea, the serene 27-acre resort offers the deserted island feel visitors to Thailand look for but rarely find.

Read on for my full review.

Anantara Koh Yao Yai Resort & Villas

  • Opened in late 2023, Thailand’s newest Anantara resort is a tropical oasis of grass-covered contemporary buildings connected by swirling pathways, nestled between the Andaman Sea's lush jungle and sparkling turquoise waters.
  • The spacious rooms cater to various needs — from wellness villas with a private treatment room to family suites featuring bunk beds and in-room slides to the two-story pool penthouses with a rooftop infinity pool.
  • From sidecar adventures to sunset cruises to island hopping — the hotel offers an impressive selection of off-site activities, so you’ll never be bored. But with its sprawling white sand beach, beachfront infinity pool, and one of the largest kids’ clubs in the country, you could just as quickly fill your days on property.
  • The resort is the first and only five-star property on the island of Koh Yao Yai, offering unrivaled privacy a 30-minute boat ride away from the crowded beaches of Phuket.

khao yai guided tours

The resort’s 148 rooms and suites offer something for every kind of vacation, but consistent throughout is a color palette of light blonde woods and nautical blues, reflecting the white sand beach outside. Pool villas feature their own private deck and pool, including options for families that include a kids’ bunk bed and play area.

Wellness-seekers will want to book the wellness lagoon pool villas, which have a pool deck for practicing yoga and meditation and a separate treatment room for a therapeutic Thai massage. One- and two-bedroom beachfront pool villas beckon beach lovers as they allow you to walk straight out to the beach from your private sundeck and pool.

Courtesy of Anantara Koh Yao Yai Resort & Villas

The standout accommodations, however, are the two-story penthouses. With a fully equipped kitchen, separate dining and living areas, and an upper deck with an infinity pool and outdoor shower, the nearly 4,000-square-foot rooms feel more like full-service apartments (complete with butler service). But you don’t have to book the penthouse to have a luxurious stay here — even the entry-level rooms are spacious at 968 square feet and offer uninterrupted sea views from the balcony and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Booking Tip

Penthouse 4401 is especially impressive with its rooftop swimming pool featuring a glass-bottomed floor that overlooks the living room below.

While I was tempted to spend my stay lounging in my room’s private infinity pool, the resort’s greatest selling point is its remote location on an island that remains largely untouched by tourism, so I would have been remiss not to venture offsite. I rode in a vintage sidecar through a nearby rubber plantation and tried my hand at painting in a tie-dye class, followed by a beachside lunch of pad thai and kluay buat chee (a refreshing coconut banana soup) at a local restaurant.

While I’m not a morning person, I made an exception to beat the crowds for a sunrise hike to the summit of nearby Hong Island before cooling off in its crystal-clear lagoon. The excursion made me wish I had more time to explore nearby islands like Maya Bay (where "The Beach" was filmed) and Bamboo Island (a tiny island surrounded by a coral reef). The resort also offers other water-focused excursions, like educational boat tours with local fishermen, scuba diving with leopard sharks, snorkeling in shallow reefs, kayaking through mangroves, and romantic sunset cruises.

Back on site, I spent my time relaxing on the resort’s near-empty beach, but there were plenty of activities for those seeking movement: volleyball and soccer, paddle boarding, and yoga, along with several other fitness classes at the gym. I also couldn’t stop taking photos during my stay — the resort is so stunning it even offers private, professional photoshoots. One activity I wish I had signed up for was a cooking class, in which you make your own Thai lunch from ingredients and the catch of the day you pick up from nearby fishing villages.

With sleek cream buildings covered in pristinely cut grass overlooking the beachfront infinity pool, Anantara Koh Yao Yai exudes a kind of quiet luxury that could easily make it the set of "The White Lotus," but that doesn’t mean the resort doesn’t appeal to families too.

A separate family pool area features water slides and a shallow toddler pool directly accessible from many family villas. The family sea view suites entertain the little ones with an in-room slide and hidden play areas, while a private balcony offers parents a quiet reprieve. The kids’ club — one of the largest in the country — has a bubble pool and vacuum fountain ball shower and offers countless activities for every age group, giving parents time for some much-needed relaxation.

Relaxation is also found in the spa , a towering structure marked by its impressive outdoor infinity hydro-pool on display upon entry. Inside, you’ll find a hammam, steam room, sauna, meditation room, and experiential showers. Four treatment rooms serve as the venue for services beyond your typical Thai massage (although they offer that, too).

Globally-inspired healing modalities range from gua sha facials to Himalayan salt stone massages to Ayurvedic sound baths designed to align the chakras. Those seeking more than a single treatment can turn their stay into a full-fledged wellness retreat , which includes accommodation in the wellness lagoon pool villas, a daily in-villa afternoon nutrition platter, complimentary spa activities, and a 20 percent discount on an in-villa massage.

While being confined to an island might not appeal to the traveling foodie, the resort’s diverse dining options mean no two meals here must be the same. Those seeking regional Thai cuisine will find it at Pakarang, where live cooking stations prepare various dishes throughout the day — from Thai dim sum at the breakfast buffet to green papaya salad at lunch to spicy massaman curry at dinner. The Beach Restaurant, as the name suggests, offers the chance to eat overlooking the beach and serves refreshing international fare to match (everything from seafood platters to sushi to tacos).

The highlight dining experience for me was having a custom candlelit dinner on the beach — it was so romantic I wished I had a date to join me. If I did, I would also take them to the resort’s omakase-inspired Japanese restaurant, where you can savor Japanese specialties at an intimate chef’s counter. Bars serving light fare at the pool and beach and in-room dining ensure you’ll never go hungry here.

Family rooms are the best option for people with disabilities as they can accommodate wheelchair users. Public areas are also accommodating, with features like ramps, elevators, and accessible toilets.

In addition to using solar panels and green roofs to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources, Anantara Koh Yao Yai is involved in numerous conservation efforts to minimize their impact on the island and the surrounding marine ecosystem. The resort has built its own reservoir so they have a reliable water supply without compromising the water resources of nearby villagers, planted seagrass to replenish the habitat of the declining dugong population in the Andaman Sea, and built houses for the hornbills that have lost habitat to deforestation. They also educate villagers and guests on sustainable farming practices (from their own herb garden), native wildlife conservation, and proper waste management.

The Anantara Koh Yao Yai Resort & Villas is part of the GHA Discovery loyalty program that gets you rewards, perks, and special rates at more than 800 hotels and resorts representing 40 hotel brands across over 100 countries.

Had arranged a 1-day birdwatching trip with Tontan travel to Khao Yai from Bangkok. Kudos to guide Alex who was diligently looking out for my target species, always listening and checking potential areas. Although I didn't get to see the banded kingfisher which would have absolutely made my trip even more memorable, I still enjoyed the day outing thoroughly. All things considered, it was still a blessing to have sighted a lone male Wild Elephant in the open field, the white-handed Gibbon and the red-headed Trogon at eye level. (Side note : The taxi ride to Khao Yai & back were smooth with safety-conscious drivers. Was able to rest comfortably during the car rides). Would not hesitate to take up another longer trip again with Tontan in future.
