Kindle Fire- Wi Fi on Carnival Magic

By rsail203 , November 21, 2011 in Carnival Cruise Lines

Cool Cruiser

Yesterday, I stayed at a motel with free wi-fi, but my new Kindle Fire did not work there, but my wife's I-phone worked. When I talked with the desk clerk, she said that her I-pad didn't work there either. So my question is- Will my Kindle Fire work on the Magic. I know it's brand new, but does anyone have any info on this?

At 75 cents a minute .. if you can sign into the internet on magic, its available. Be aware there is also a set up charge on top of the per minute charge.

I was on Magic on internet, and it took me 20 minutes to do two simple emails.. its like dial up, plus expensive. From my cabin forward on deck 6, my connection also showed as "low", barely would connect unless I got more in the center of the ship.

I was on the Magic (one night stay over for inaugural and tried with Ipad also. I cannot see why the Fire would not work. The Ipad worked but was very slow. Not sure if it is always that way or slow due to everyone having free access the day we were on the ship. As a side, the sister ship (Dream) had the fastest wifi (by far) ever experienced on a ship. Was expecting the same thing when we were on the Magic.

I need something to trade stocks with to access the internet, and wondering if the kindle fire is the answer? I have a laptop, but its a little large to travel with easily. I need something that fits into my purse for flying they dont count as a extra item.

does the fire access the internet like a regular computer.. or just do books?

I wish they didn't feel the need to throttle (slow) the speed of the connection and then charge by the minute. I understand they want to make a few bucks but it's ridiculous how much they are trying to make of the internet alone.

Phone calls = by the minute, is understandable. Internet (throttled) = by the minute, makes no sense unless you are just trying to overcharge your customers. It should be by amount of data transferred! This isn't a new concept and is how most of the world works. Then they can remove the speed throttle and actually have a usable service.

I truely think they would see a really positive response and much happier customers if they did it this way. I also believe sooner, rather than later they will see they make more money this way too. Many more people will use the on-board WIFI once it is no longer throttled and is actually usable at a reasonable price. At that point people will stop waiting to get to ports where it is a fraction of the current on-board cost.

Fire: I have a new Amazon Kindle Fire. It is a tablet that you can read books on. It does access the internet thru either a Wifi connection or USB to the computer. It is Android based, so lots of apps are already available and many more will be out soon. At a cost of only $199 it does not have all the bells and whistles that much more expensive tablets have. You need to know that up front so that you are not disappointed if you are considering one. Check out the product page at Amazon and there is also a very active Kindle forum on the Amazon site. Most of the complaints center around it not being as good as this or that other device, usually by people that did not bother to do a little research before the purchase. So far I am very happy with mine. It a step up from my Kindle 3 for sure, but is not a replacement. Basically does everything except make phone calls that my Iphone does, but on a much larger screen. As far as checking stocks, no problem. There is an app for that also or you can go directly to the brokers page as long as you have a WiFi connection.

So what you are saying is it is not a stand alone computer??

I dont want aps, I want internet access, so I guess get a ipad or use laptop I already have.

I dont want to just check stocks, I need to access my account so I can buy and sell. (and make some money)

Sounds like it might not be for me.

You will be able to access the Internet just fine with the Kindle Fire it has a web browser just like your computer at home.

You access the internet just like you would on an ipad but you save $300

The connection I had on the Magic last weekend was pretty fair... somewhat weaker than I expected but I'm sure there were a ton of folks using up the bandwidth. I can't address your Kindle but if it's WIFI capable it should work... my Android phone did...

I think you can do all that. Just like any lap top that has Wifi capabilities as long as you have a Wifi connection you can access pretty much anything on the internet. I have not found any sites that I could not connect too. One of the ones I use is my brokers site and I have made several trades using the Fire connection. With a good Wifi connection it is a fast as my computer at home and it has pretty quick down and up speeds. One of the benefits of buying the Fire direct from Amazon is that you have 30 days to return it if for any reason you are unhappy and that includes any shipping charges. To me the Wifi on the ship is a total dog, way to slow for me so I do not even bother using it on onboard. I plan on using my Fire in port to access my e-mail and other accounts using the free Wifi provided by Paradise Beach and many other bars, etc.

You might want to check out the nook tablet. needs wifi access to use the internet, but once it has that, will do what you need on the internet.
The Nook Tablet is $50 more than the Kindle.
There are a lot of other good tablet options available that are not an iPad or a Kindle Fire. There's a whole section at your local Best Buy or Staples dedicated to tablets. We have the Motorolla Xoom and it's awesome. Syncs to your google accounts and you can browse, access email etc. just like on on a laptop, but it's a lot more portable. There are also other cheaper tablets out now like the Lenovo one and also I think Acer has an affordable option. Shop around!

Yep, and manufactured by a company that stays on the verge of bankruptcy. :p

The Acer is nice but is still almost $400.

I know this is a stupid question, but can I read my regular Kindle on a ship? I read it flying to and from California on a plane. Just wondering as you are talking beyond me. I have a Kindle and love it.

finsupcruiser

Got my KINDLE Fire last week. Great for traveling. Used it this weekend in DC worked great. I also have an IPAD really heavy to carry. Fire is much lighter .I had no problem accessing everything I wanted. I have a portable MIFI device that I use rather than Internet in hotels. Even used Internet in car with MIFI. DH was driving not me:p
Yes you can use your Kindle on the ship just download all the books you may want to read before you leave.

Thank you, I was getting nervous!!

I know just how you feel. Im not very up on tech toys either. Its all Greek to me.

I was trading a stock for big money last cruise on Triumph and having a heart attack as the only connection on the ship was CNN on my tv and ports.

I was thinking I might slow down cruising I was so upset that I didnt really have a good way to connect to the internet. Laptop is too heavy to tote around.

those other kinds sound good to me too. I have hundreds of free books from the senior center, just need to get secure access to my brokers account at etrade.

I could google it and find out .. but I dont even know what MIFI is. lol

I dont have a google account either.

I might have to check out best buy. Unfortunately, Im flying out this Friday, black Friday when I bet there are some deals out there.

Portable wireless hotspot that works off of 3g you can basically get internet anywhere you get a cell phone signal.

Miller_KC

If you are using a Kindle with 3G you can still download books on the ship and in foreign ports, no extra charge. The signal on board was too slow for the bowser to load cleanly but we were able to order books and browse some simple sites. The Fire is WiFi only right now and WiFi will cost you on the ship.

Be sure to suspend any automatically delivered Magazine subscriptions while you are out of the country. There is an extra fee for delivering magazines outside the US.

Carnival cruise ship catches fire for the second time in 2 years

By Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: March 25, 2024 / 9:57 AM EDT / CBS News

A Carnival cruise ship will be out of commission for repairs for at least a week after its exhaust funnel caught fire and partially collapsed Saturday during a trip to the Bahamas. It marked the second time in just under two years that the funnel on this same ship, the Carnival Freedom, went up in flames while carrying passengers.

What caused the most recent incident is still being investigated, according to the cruise company. No one on board the ship was injured, but Carnival said two fire crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

The Carnival Freedom left from Port Canaveral, Florida, on Thursday and was supposed to travel for several days through the Bahamas before returning Monday to Port Canaveral. It was not immediately clear how many passengers and crew were on board the Freedom when the fire erupted, but the cruise ship can accommodate 2,980 guests and 1,150 crew members at capacity. CBS News contacted Carnival for more information.

The ship initially reported a fire at around 3:15 p.m. EDT on Saturday, on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel as it sailed 20 miles off of the Bahamas' Eleuthera Island en route to Freeport, the company said in a statement. It had changed course to turn toward Freeport, at the northern tip of the island chain, after cancelling a stop farther south in Princess Cays because of bad weather. Eyewitnesses said that a lightning strike may have sparked the fire, a claim that Carnival said "is being investigated but cannot yet be confirmed."

carnival-freedom.png

A fire response team was activated quickly to put out the blaze once it broke out, as the Freedom's captain shifted the cruise liner toward the heavy rain nearby in hopes that would help. The fire was extinguished by 5:20 p.m., Carnival said, including flames from a portion of the funnel that broke off and fell onto one of the ship decks. Funnels are essentially used as smokestacks or chimneys to expel fumes and engine exhaust.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the Carnival Freedom crew was able to extinguish the fire Saturday without their help. They were aware of the fire, though, and issued a Captain of the Port order to the cruise ship before it was scheduled to enter Port Canaveral, Florida, on Monday. Captain of the Port orders are  broad mandates that the Marine Safety and Security Council describes as a tool granting Coast Guard crews "with operational controls over an emergent situation posing safety, security, or environmental risks."

"We are continuing to monitor the situation," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Although Carnival said at first that it did not expect the fire to impact trips on the Freedom cruise set to depart Port Canaveral on Monday and Friday, a technical assessment carried out in Freeport on Sunday revealed more significant damage to the ship than they originally thought. The damage would "require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel" after disembarking guests in Port Canaveral on Monday, the company said in an updated statement following the assessment.

"The funnel has been stabilized for the ship's return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs," Carnival said on Sunday. "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation."

Both Carnival Freedom cruises scheduled for this week have been cancelled. Carnival said guests who had booked those cruises would receive full refunds and future cruise credits.

The Carnival Freedom's exhaust funnel last went up in flames less than two years ago, in May 2022. It was in Grand Turk at the time, during a planned five-day trip from Port Canaveral. The ship had 2,504 guests and 972 crew on board, Carnival said at the time. None of the passengers or crew were hurt.

How to Watch/Stream Amazon, Disney+, ESPN, Hulu (and More) on a Cruise

According to surveys, somewhere around 70-75% of households subscribe to some sort of streaming service, whether that be Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Hulu, ESPN or countless others.

Streaming on a cruise

And that number looks like it will continue to go higher as their popularity grows and more services are launched.

At the same time, people aren’t just watching streams at home on the couch. Whether it’s on their phone while on a lunch break, or the kids watching a show on a tablet in the car, streaming services can go everywhere with you.

While some people might find it weird to watch a show while on vacation (shouldn’t you be out having fun instead?), many of us like to unwind with a little TV. It’s a great way to relax during the heat of the day when you don’t want to be outside or at night when winding down before you go to sleep.

Of course, being in the middle of the ocean — sometimes hundreds of miles from the nearest land — can cause some hurdles to watching the latest episode in your queue.

So can you stream these services on a cruise? The general answer is yes, but it may not be quite as simple as it is back at home.

Note: For details on streaming Netflix on a cruise, see our article here .

Best Way to Watch: Downloading Shows/Movies Before You Sail

If you want to watch Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+ or other streaming services on a cruise, the best way to do so is to download the show you want to watch ahead of time .

All the major streaming services allow downloading at least some of their library for offline viewing. Then, even if you don’t have an Internet connection, or the service is spotty, then you can still watch uninterrupted as the show is already saved to your device.

The big caveat is that for some services not every show will be available to download. Due to licensing rules, not all titles are eligible. So if you are in the middle of watching a series, there is no guarantee that you’ll be able to continue it via download.

You will also need to know what you want to watch ahead of time. If you plan to browse titles after you are on the ship to find something to watch, then you’re going to need to purchase wi-fi access on the cruise ship that allows access to streaming services.

Even so, if you want to watch a program on one of the streaming services, the best idea is to download it beforehand for later watching.

Streaming ESPN, Disney+, HULU, Amazon, and More While on a Cruise Ship

The good news? If you don’t download your shows ahead of time, then yes, you can stream programs like Disney+, ESPN, Amazon Prime, and others while on a cruise ship .

The bad news? It can be costly to do so.

Whereas a few years ago streaming content was largely blocked, cruise lines are moving more toward offering it as a feature of their highest-tier wi-fi plans.

Cruise lines offer several different levels of Internet service, with some ranging from low-tier plans that only allow things like social media to the highest speeds available and full online access.

These top plans can be pricey at between $15-30 per day, depending on the cruise line. On a week-long cruise, you can literally spend hundreds of Internet access.

One thing to keep in mind as well is that while online access is improving, it is still the Internet in the middle of the ocean. There are times where connections can be slow, which makes it hard to stream.

Even so, streaming is possible on most major cruise lines.

Carnival Of all the cruise lines, Carnival seems to be the most restrictive on streaming content. With their highest-level “Premium Wi-Fi Plan,” Carnival says “Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Sunrise are Netflix enabled, so you can use the Netflix app and your Netflix account to watch your favorite shows.” But they also say that the plan does not support video or music streaming.

In other words, you can get Netflix on a handful of ships, but Carnival says video services like Hulu aren’t available. In this case, be sure to download ahead of time.

Royal Caribbean Royal Caribbean offers VOOM , which it claims is the fastest Internet at sea. The cruise line offers two levels of services for VOOM. If you want to stream, then you’ll need to sign up for the upgraded “Surf + Stream” package. Prices will vary, but we recently saw a cost of around $16 per day.

As the name implies, the “Surf + Stream” package offers up support for streaming services like Disney+ and Hulu for movies and TV, so you can watch your shows while at sea. Just know that there still might be places where the connection won’t be as stable as what you’ll find at home. The ship’s position and weather can have an impact. It might be that your show isn’t as crisp and sharp as you might be used to watching.

Norwegian Cruise Lines Of the major cruise lines, Norwegian seems to have the most expensive wi-fi service, but it does allow streaming. To watch Disney+, Amazon, Hulu, EPSN and others, you’ll need to sign up for the “Unlimited Premium Wi-Fi Package.” This package runs $30-35 per day.

With the premium wi-fi, you get access to streaming apps, with NCL specifically mentioning “YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Audible, Hulu, Tik Tok etc.”

Be Sure to Bring Your Own Device

One thing to know is that while things might change in the future, as of now we’ve never seen any sort of streaming apps on the TV in the cabin. Instead, it’s normally just a handful of channels available.

In other words, you’ll need to bring your own device (phone, tablet, laptop) to watch your streaming apps.

As well, the connections to the TV are typically disabled, so bringing a streaming device like Roku or Amazon Fire won’t work either. Just plan on watching on your own electronics instead of the cabin television.

Final Note: Using Streaming Services Out of the Country

One thing to consider is that streaming services are often tied to your home country. So if you are in the United States, then your available content may be different from what’s available in, say, Mexico.

When on the ship using their satellite Internet, your location may show as different, which could potentially cause issues with the content available. That’s another reason to suggest downloading programs before you sail. This way, you’ll know exactly what’s available, don’t have to pay for expensive Internet, or worry about the strength of the connection due to the ship’s position or weather.

Video shows Carnival Freedom on fire, again. Two upcoming cruises were canceled. Here's what to know

The Carnival Freedom 's next two sailings have been canceled after the cruise ship, based out of Florida, caught fire . Again.

Carnival initially said there were no expected changes in its schedule but on Sunday afternoon announced cancellations of the Monday and Friday cruises out of Port Canaveral, which come during a busy spring break period.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

This is the second time in less than two years this cruise ship's funnel has caught on fire and disrupted the schedule.

Carnival cruise fire: Carnival Freedom's next two cruises from Port Canaveral canceled after exhaust funnel fire

When did the Carnival Freedom catch on fire?

The fire broke out on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel area at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Carnival said.

The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas. It was intended to call on the Carnival private island of Princess Cay but had rerouted toward Freeport due to adverse weather.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. The fire was put out by 5:20 p.m., the cruise line said.

Why did the Carnival Freedom cruise ship catch fire?

Unknown at this time.

"Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated," Carnival said, "but cannot yet be confirmed."

Was anyone hurt in the Carnival Freedom fire?

The cruise line said there were no reports of passenger injuries, although two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation and part of the funnel fell onto Deck 10, according to Carnival.

There were about 3.700 passengers aboard.

Which Carnival Freedom cruises have been canceled?

While initially the cruise line said the schedule would not be affected, further investigation found more damage than suspected. Scheduled cruises for Monday, March 25 and Friday, March 29 have been canceled.

Can I get a refund for my canceled Carnival Freedom cruise?

"We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation

Where is Port Canaveral?

Port Canaveral, Florida is located on a barrier island between the Banana River and the Atlantic Ocean just north of Cape Canaveral. The port is 54 miles from Orlando and 75 miles from Daytona Beach.

What is the funnel on a cruise ship?

A cruise ship exhaust funnel works as a smokestack to lift emissions away from the deck and from passengers and crew. They're often called stacks.

The Carnival Freedom debuted a new stylized winged funnel in October last year after a 16-day dry-dock refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain. Carnival cruise funnels are referred to as the whale tail.

Has the Carnival Freedom cruise ship caught on fire before?

A fire broke out in the funnel area in May 2022 while it was docked in Grand Turk. Three scheduled sailings were canceled while the ship was repaired at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

The ship was carrying about 2,500 passengers at the time and a crew of about 1,100, according to the cruise line. There were no injuries reported.

Which cruise ship caught fire?

The  Carnival Freedom  caught on fire on Saturday, March 23.

The 110,000-ton vessel made its inaugural sail in 2007.  The Freedom, which has 13 decks, can hold up to 3,754 passengers and 1,150 crew members.

Has a Carnival cruise ship ever sank?

No. But one has been shipwrecked.

On Jan. 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia struck a reef and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio. The ship, which was owned by a Carnival Corporation subsidiary, when the captain steered the 952-foot, 13-deck ship close to the shore to "impress the passengers" and tore a 160-foot gash in the port hull.

Captain Francesco Schettino was found guilty of manslaughter in 2015 and sentenced to 16 years in prison for the deaths of 32 passengers and crewmembers.

Carnival cruise ship returns to Florida after funnel fire

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Carnival cruise ship that caught fire over the weekend safely returned to Florida on Monday.

Video from WESH showed the Carnival Freedom bringing passengers back to Port Canaveral around 7:30 a.m.

The ship’s funnel caught fire off the coast of the Bahamas on Saturday.

“The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames. Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated but cannot yet be confirmed,” Carnival told WFLA in a statement on Saturday.

A portion of the funnel fell onto Deck 10. The crew asked passengers to avoid balconies and open decks for safety.

Carnival said two crew members who extinguished the fire were treated for minor smoke inhalation. No guests were injured.

The cruise line had to cancel the Freedom’s next two voyages , departing on March 25 and March 29, out of Port Canaveral.

Guests scheduled for those cruises will be issued a full refund and a future cruise credit, Carnival said.

The ship will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday to undergo repairs.
