The Complete Guide to Kinner Kailash Shivlingam Trek

The Kinner Kailash Shivlingam trek will take to the heart of one of the most mythical abodes of Lord Shiva, which is a 79-foot vertical rock in the Kinner Kailash mountain range. On a clear day, one can see the Shivlingam which changes color during the course of the day. This Rock face is in between the 20,000 ft Kinner Kailash ranges of Mt. Kailash (19,850 ft) & Mt. Jorkanden (21,237 ft).

  • There is a logical route that is taken by pilgrims and locals of the region to reach this holy rock. This trek can be done in a span of 2 to 3 days.

Folklore about Kinner Kailash

According to Hindu Mythology, this is a very sacred place in the Indian Himalayas as it is associated with Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. A natural pond/Kund near Kinnar Kailash peak, known as Parvati Kund, is considered to be a creation of Goddess Parvati. She worshipped here for a long time. It is also the meeting place for Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. For this reason, Ganesh Park or Kailash Darshan Park was earlier called Ashiqui Park.

Mythology states that Lord Shiva conducted a meeting of Goddesses and Gods at Kinner Kailash peak every winter. This accounts for the Yatra that takes place every year during this time by devotees of Lord Shiva and local deities.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: tangling to ashiqui park (8-9 kms), altitude: from 7050 ft to 11,762 ft.

Kinner Kailash trek/Yatra starts from Tangling village, situated on the left bank of the Sutlej river at an altitude of 7050 ft. There are two ways to reach Tangling village. One is by crossing the Jhoola Pul at Powari ( which is very thrilling) or by dirt road and crossing the Shontong Bridge over the Sutlej.

The tangling village is spread across one small river and consists of around 100 homes and a beautiful temple dedicated to the local deity Nag Devta. It is full of orchards, seasonal vegetables and cheerful hospitable people. The roar of the Sutlej is clearly heard.

From here the trek follows a metalled pathway up to a small stream about 2.5 Kms ahead. It took us around 1.5 hrs to reach the stream passing small wooden houses, vegetable fields and orchards along the way. This fresh water stream comes directly from the Kinner Kailash Mountain range. We crossed the same stream the next day near Bheem Dwar.

We rested here and admired the beauty of the mountains, the valley and the Sutlej River. We then filled up our water bottles here because there is no water till Ashiqui Park which comes after conquering Kailash Dhaar after a vertical climb of 6-7 km. This part of the trek is known as Kailash Dhaar because it is the way towards Kinner Kailash Peak. There are two famous halts on the way to Ashiqui Park from this small stream. These are known as Bara Pathar (Big Stone or Rock) and Bara ped (Big Tree). It took us 2 hours from the stream to Bara Pathar. This is a trail of around 2.5 Kms at an altitude of 8415 ft. through a dense forest of Deodar trees. At Bara Pathar we rested a while to admire the beauty of the Sutlej River as it flows towards Karcam Wangtoo.

Bara Pathar is famous due to the big rock on which travelers rest. This big rock is in the midst of the dense Deodar trees and looks very beautiful. From here looking down we got a view of the villages below. We spent some precious time here. 2.5 km after Bara Pathar at an altitude of 9695 ft. is Bara ped. This place is famous for the centuries-old massive Deodar tree. The tree line ends abruptly at this place. After this point, there are only shrubs and herbs on the way to Ashiqui Park.

After crossing the Bugyals (meadows) we reached Ashiqui Park. We feasted on jungle strawberries that were growing all along the path. These are a great source of energy for pilgrims or travelers.  Ashiqui Park is at an altitude of 11,778 ft. It is a big Bugyal, which is the best camping site for the trek. The water source is very close by. An inn has been constructed here at Ashiqui Park for travelers. We spent hours here watching the Kinner Kailash mountain range and beyond towards Kalpa and Recong Peo. We had a 270° view of the Himalayas and surrounding towns from this vantage point.

The night view was fascinating. We could see the lights of Kalpa and Recong Peo town from here and in the moon light the Kailash peak is clearly visible. A campfire completed the perfect setting.

Day 2:- Ashiqui Park to Kinner Kailash

Altitude: from 11,762 ft. to 15004ft.

Early in the morning we started towards Kinner Kailash peak. There are two important halts on the way to Kinnar Kailash from Ashiqui Park : Bheem Dwar and Parvati Kund. The distance between Ashiqui Park and Kinner Kailash is around 8-10 Kms with takes 7-9 hrs depending the fitness level of the pilgrim or trekker. This made it necessary for us to start early so as to reach back to base in time.

The first place we halted at was Bheem Dwar. This place is around 3-4 Kms from Ahsiqui Park at 12,400 ft. The first part of the trek upto Bheem Dwar was a steep climb of about 2 Kms from Ahsiqui Park which took 1.5 hrs.  After reaching this point we took a short rest. The next part upto Bheem Dwar was a descent. Just before reached Bheem Dwar we had to cross a stream which we heard is frozen most of the time and is part of glacier.

After crossing this stream we reached Bheem Dwar. This place is a small cave under big stones. It can accommodate around 10-15 people at one time. It is also an ideal place for camping and water is available in plenty.  During winter pilgrims camp at this place and during summers shepherds use this place to stay and to deposit their food items. Hours can be spent here listening to the sweet sound of stream flowing close by.

The next halt on the way to Kinner Kailash was Parvati Kund which is a glacial lake at the base of the Kinnar Kailash peak. There is no source of water in between Bheem Dwar and Parvati Kund, so it is necessary to carry enough water from Bheem Dwar.

This next part of the trek from Bheem Dwar to Parvati Kund was around 3 kms which took us 2.5 -3 hrs. The first half was a vertical cliff of around 1.5 kms and the next part upto Parvati Kund is covered with rocks, boulders and snow.

On the way to Parvati Kund we had to find the way with the help of stone pillars and had to be careful on the rocks while moving forward. Parvati Kund is a small glacial lake at around 9843 ft. It was frozen. Many worship here for the blessings of Mata Parvati and Lord Shiva to safely complete the journey to Kinner Kailash.

From Parvati Kund to Kinner Kailash peak (Lingam) there is no source of water so we had to carry enough water from here upto the peak and back. This was the last part of the trek and it required a lot of dedication and strength. From Parvati Kund to Kinner Kailash peak is a vertical climb of around 2.5 Kms which took us 3-4 hrs.

The way to Kinner Kailash from Parvati Kund was full of Moraines and extra care had to be taken during the trek. On the way to the peak we crossed some small stone tunnels or caves. There is only one route from Parvati Kund to Kinner Kailash marked by stone pillars.

Kinner Kailash Shivling is a sacred rock worshipped as the Lingam of Lord Shiva. The rock pillar faces towards Reckong-peo and Kala and is about 79 feet high and 30-40 feet wide. This is a holy place and we could feel the aura of sacredness here.  Standing here we could see some high peaks of the Great Himalayan Mountain Range like Mt. Jorkandan and Mt. Rangrik . We spent considerable time here before returning to Ashiqui Park.

How to Get Fit for the Trek

The Kinner Kailash trek is classified as a trek of moderate difficulty .

Cardiovascular endurance

For two days, you will cover a distance of 40 km. The secret to covering this distance comfortably lies in building your cardiovascular endurance. You can begin by jogging everyday . Ideally, you should be able to jog 4 km in 20 minutes before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Start slow and increase your pace everyday. Swimming, cycling and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too.

This is another area you should work on. You will need to build strength in your muscles and in your core body. You can do some squats to strengthen your leg muscles. Do around 3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set . Apart from this, you can add planks and crunches to your work out.

Flexibility

Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises - stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles and shoulders regularly. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek.

Kinner Kailash Departure Schedule in 2023

Our Kinner Kailash Parikrama departures are scheduled for the second week of June and the first week of September. We are looking for a minimum group size of 6 people.

We also can run tailor-made trips for smaller group sizes (i.e. less than 6 people) who are willing to sustain an additional price. The trek dates are subjected to the notifications and the pandemic guidelines released by Kinnaur district administration.

Routes to Kinner Kailasha Shivling

There are three routes to reach the apex point of Kinnaur Kailash Shivling trail.

  • Tangling- Maling Khata Meadows – Gufa – Parvati Kund – Kinner Kailash (the most frequently trodden trail).
  • Ribba village – Bato Kanda meadows – Parvati Kund – Kinner Kailash .
  • Purbani village – Purbani Kanda – Parvati Kund – Kinner Kailash Shivling .

All three trails passes through villages, apple orchards, vineyards (Ribba is renowned for grape cultivation and Angoori — the grape wine).

The Tangling-Maling Khata-Gufa trail is a quintessential ascent. After the Tangling village — the last point of civilization — there is an 8-9 hours of sheer climb through dense forests of Fir and Juniper trees till Government Sarai (Shelter).

Most people discontinue their hike at or nearby Sarai, camp on the meadows, and stop for the night halt. If you hold up there through the night, start early in the morning as you need to cover the remaining boulder-ridden terrain—which is the most difficult part of the Kinner Kailash Yatra trail—and descend back to the base.

Sunrise through clouds over Kinnaur Kailash group of peaks

If you manage to reach the Gufa (a big cave shelter that serve as a base camp for Kailash Yatra pilgrims) milestone on the same day, the climb will be less straining on the body as you get more time to take a breather — which you must take frequently considering the thin air and imposing boulders blocking the route.

The Ribba-Bato Kanda route to Kinner Kailash is a shorter and less (than Tangling-Gufa route) demanding. The trail gradually ascents from Ribba village and meet the Tangling-Gufa trail near Parvati Kund.

The Purbani-Kinnaur Kailash route is the least trodden one. It is used mostly by the shepherds.

History Behind The Kinners Of Kinnaur

The history and origin of the word Kinner — with respect to the people of Kinnaur — is still debatable. Kinners of Kinnaur finds mentions in all religious and mythology texts — except Rig Veda — like Rajtaringini, Amarkosha, Matsya Purana, Ramayan, Mahabharata, Shiv Purana, and Vishnu Purana .

In this anthology of epics, Kinners are revered as a distinct tribe who are demi-gods—partway between men and gods.

kinner kailash trek length

The celebrated poet and sage Kalidasa has written extensively about the Kinner people of Kinnaur. In Meghdoot — a masterpiece in Sanskrit literature — Kalidasa has described Kinners as pretty people with mellifluous voices who sung and danced at Lord Kuber’s royal court.

Bird's eye view of Kalpa village of Kinnaur

Kinner or Kimpurush are children of the God. To visit this country means to visit Devaloka . Over the year, the word Kinner itself got corrupted to Kinnaur. There were many routes to reach here. The most followed route since the prehistoric times began from Kalsi, on the banks of the Yamuna. At Kalsi, there is still a stone inscription of the king Ashoka. Today people don’t take this route to reach Kinnaur, but the people of Kinnaur have not forgotten Kalsi; Even now in winters they reach there with their thousands of sheep and goats. from Kinner Desh Main by Rahul Sankrityayan

Following the June 2019 incident that occurred near Parvati Kund, the Kinnaur district administration under Himachal Pradesh Miscellaneous Adventure Activities Rules 2017 has mandated the permit for every trekker wishing to register for the Kinner Kailash Yatra.

As per Himachal Pradesh Miscellaneous Adventure Activities Rules, 2017 any trekking activity in the district has to be carried out with prior permission from the tourism office and camping permission of the trek is to be obtained from the forest department. — Deputy Commissioner, Kinnaur

No. Shirkhand Mahadev Yatra route is located in outer Siraj region of Greater Himalayan National Park of Kullu district, whereas the Kinner Kailash Yatra route falls completely in Sairag (Kalpa) valley of Kinnaur.

First you need to reach Reckong Peo, the administrative HQ of Kinnaur district. You can take any one of the three routes from Reckong Peo.  Tangling village-Gufa-Kinner Kailash Shivling route.  Ribba village-Parvati Kund-Kinner Kailash Shivling route. Purbani village-Parvati Kund-Kinner Kailash.

Kinner Kailash (6050 m) is a holy peak towering over the Kalpa (called Sairag by the people of Kinnaur) valley of Kinnaur. You must have previous climbing/mountaineering experience to reach the apex of Kinner Kailash peak. However, the trek to Shivling pillar, located below the 6050 m high Kinnaur Kailash peak, is doable (not recommended) even if you have no prior trekking experience.

The yatra dates of Kinnaur Kailash are officially announced (for a period of 4-5 weeks) by Kinner Kailash Yatra committee after consultation with the local administration. One can’t go for yatra before or after the time window approved by the administration.    However, the Kinnaur Kaliash Parikrama (circuit) trek is doable from May-September month period.

Kinner Kailash peak is named after the Kinner tribe — the people of Kinnaur. There are many mythological connotations attached to the word ‘Kinner’. You would find a mention of ‘Kinners’ in almost all major Hindu religious texts and epics. In these texts, the Kinners are described as a tribe of great singers and dancers living in the Himalayas.  Artists of India and Central Asia made sculptures of the Kinner tribe during the ancient and early medieval period. Cave 1 of Ajanta caves is dedicated to the Kinners. During this period, the Kinner tribe was spread from Bhagirathi valley of Uttarakhand in the east to the source of Chandrabhaga river in the west.

The Himachal Pradesh region's Kinnaur Valley is home to Mount Kinner Kailash. One of the five Mount Kailash, it is thought to be Lord Shiva's abode. According to legend, Lord Shiva oversaw the cosmos from Mount Kinner Kailash. Hindus see Mount Kinner Kailash as having special religious significance because of the enormous "SHIVA LINGAM," a 79-foot-tall rock structure that resembles a Shivlinga. The Parikrama (Circumambulation) used to be 200 km long, but it has since been shortened. We will complete this walk clockwise. This walk is extremely difficult and is best suited for those who love adventure and religion. For seasoned hikers, the climb to Kinner Kailash is both rewarding and difficult.

The Kinner Kailash Parikrama walk, one of the hardest treks in the Indian Himalaya, takes you deep into the wilderness of the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Kinnaur, one of Himachal's most picturesque and lonely regions, is home to the revered Mt. Kinner Kailash and is not far from the Indo-Tibetan border. The Kinnaur valley's tranquil and attractive appeal is enhanced by the Sutlej River, which runs through it and rises from the Kailash Parvat hills near Mansarovar Lake in Tibet. A unique fusion of Hindu and Buddhist traditions may be found in the valley because of its proximity to Tibet; pagoda-style buildings and monasteries are particularly common there.Foreign nationals are obviously obliged to obtain prior authorization from the tourism authorities as this is a sensitive border area.

Given that Mt. Kinner Kailash in the area is home to a 79-foot-tall Shivlinga that boasts the ability to change colour with the passage of time, Kinnaur is regarded as one of the mythological residences of Lord Shiva and is hence of immense religious significance to Shiva believers. The Kinner Kailash Parikrama journey, which is primarily attempted by pilgrims, is a test of one's faith, physical and mental stamina, and tenacity. Be ready to navigate your way over perilous trails, climb enormous rocks, scale tight slopes with loose gravel and stones, and cross wide water streams while you enjoy the unparalleled spectacular vistas of lovely meadows, apple orchards, hanging glaciers, and towering peaks.

The Kinner Kailash Parikrama trek starts in the Thangi village near Chail and takes you via picturesque Charang Village, the high mountain pass of Charang La, which stands at an elevation of 17,200 feet above sea level, before concluding in Manali through Chitkul, Tabo, and Losar.

Best Time To Do Kinner Kailash Trek

The journey can be started at any time from May to October, although September and October are the best months because rainy monsoon season may cause landslides, avalanches, and cloud bursts before then.

Kinner kailash trek – the heavenly abode of lord shiva, kinner kailash: the heavenly abode of lord shiva.

Kinner Kailash is often spelled as Kinnaur Kailash, but it is locally called Kinner Kailash. Tucked in the beautiful valley of Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh. Mount Kinner Kailash (6050 m) is one of the five Mount Kailash in India. Legend says that Lord Shiva inhabited this mountain and still does while controlling the universe from this very spot. This mountain holds a very sacred place in religion and thousands of pilgrims flock to the valley to get a glimpse of the mountain and perform the Parikrama (circumambulation). Earlier, the parikrama was around 200 km, but lately, for the convenience of pilgrims who do the hard work of walking around the Mount Kailash for good karma and out of devotion, the Parikrama has been cut short. It begins from Kalpa through Triung Valley and takes pilgrims back to Kalpa through Sangla Valley.

Religiously highly significant, Mount Kinner Kailash is home to the “SHIVA LINGAM,”  is a 79 feet vertical rock formation that has been touted to appear like a Shivlinga. People believe that this rock formation is indeed Lord Shiva and changes its colorful appearance all day long. Out of many sacred abodes of Lord Shiva, Mount Kinner Kailash is believed to be one.

Kinner Kailash (4800M)

History of Kinner Kailash

Kinner Kailash is considered the point where the gods reside. As per mythological belief, every winter Lord Shiva used to conduct a meeting of goddesses and gods here at Kinner Kailash.

A natural pond which is also known as Parvati Kund near Kinner Kailash peak is considered to be a creation of Goddess Parvati. It is also said that it is a meeting place for Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. For this reason, Ganesh Park or Kailash Darshan Park was earlier called Ashiqui Park. The Yatra takes place every year during the time of August by devotees of Lord Shiva.

Day 1- Chandiagrh to Kinnaur ( Travel) & Trek tanglik village to Ganesh Park campsite.

This was one of the toughest treks of life and I think anyone can only attempt this trek because the trek is full of challenges. So finally that day of my life where my friends and I decided to go for this  Trek. We took a bus from Chandigarh Bus stand at 5:30 PM and reached Kinnaur in the Morning at 7:30 AM and had breakfast in Kinnaur then on the way for the trek. The first challenge of the trek was crossing the Satluj river with a small jhula that was really scary. After crossing the Jhula the challenge was going to be started. Trek start from Tanglik Village. A steep hike on the way to Ganesh park. We started our trek around 10 AM and it’s a tough one climb on the way to base camp Ganesh park. We were a group of 10 trekkers and everyone having a different speed of climbing. We saw the beauty of the trek while climbing towards the base. I felt that this will be the real challenge of my life to climb this powerful place of Lord Shiva. I clicked some splendid shots of the beauty of this trek and finally reached the base camp (Ganesh park). I recommend you all trekkers please go when Yatra starts and that’s the best time for this trek (August1-10). Ganesh park is having options to stay. There are lots of camps to stay. We reached around 5 PM and captured the amazing beauty of Ganesh park. Around 9 PM we slept because we need to wake up early in the Morning and Climb for Summit (Kinner Kailash).

Day 2 – Ganesh Park to Kinner kailash & Trek down to Ganesh park.

Ganesh Park: We woke up around 3:30 AM in the morning. Now that was the biggest challenge I had face in my life. We were carrying a small bag in which we carried some Paranthas, biscuits, candies, glucose-D and water bottles. We could not take our backpacks because we had to come back to Ganesh park. There was no option to stay in between the Kailash to Ganesh Park, the only option was Guffa but that place is mostly full and not having so many tents. It’s really a big challenge when doing trekking in the night because it’s too cold at night. Around 7 Am we took a rest in a place and the amazing view of the Morning clouds was just down from me. We started our breakfast but the paranthas were just frozen because of the cold and the only option left for us was eating biscuits and candies. Wow, a man with that how could we survive?

kinner kailash trek length

We started on the way to Parvati Kund and now the altitude is 4200 meters. Few friends of mine were suffering from Acute mountain sickness because of high altitude and had not to drink lots of water. The only option was glucose. I recommend you guys to always carry glucose while trekking and it will give you so much energy. We only had that option and water.

kinner kailash trek length

I already covered  Shrikhand Mahadev but this trek difficulty was challenging. After trekking from Parvati Kund the oxygen was low and our speed was slow towards the Kailash. We faced a wind storm on our way. Locals already informed us about this storm and asked us to reach Kailash around 12 PM because after 12 PM there could be a wind Strome on the Kailash. We stuck in that Strome and waited for the storm to end. The storm was completely scary. We somehow managed to hide in the Rocks. Finally, Strom ended and we started our trek to Kailash. Finally, we reached the power full place of shiva around 1 PM. Altitude around 4800 meters and 70 feet shivling in front of you. Wow man, that was the magical moment of my life. Tears were in my eyes. Tears of happiness to reach the summit.

We spent 30-40 minutes there because the weather conditions were not good and started trekking downhill. Again there was a challenge to climb downhill as we didn’t have so much to eat because no shops were between Ganesh park to Kailash. Ohh Man such a big test for us. While trekking Downhill we lost our way around 5:30 PM the Visibility is again reduce. We didn’t stop our trek we had to reach the Ganesh park because there were no other options to stay in between the trek.

We reached Guffa around 8 PM and ask for a stay but there was no stay due to the lack of tents at that point. We were Hungry and energy was low in our body at that time and we only had Glouse and water. Already 14 hours spent on trekking and the longest day of trekking. Finally, we reached Ganesh Park at 10 PM and that was a relief. I 16 hours spent trekking and had not eaten anything only biscuits and glouse. I must say we survived.

I think it was the Power of Shiva with us that was the only reason we climbed to the summit.

kinner kailash trek length

Day 3- Ganesh park to Tanglik Village.

Ganesh Park: Next day morning we started our trek to the Tanglik Village. Around 4-5 hours to reach the Village and spend some time in Kinnaur. Around 2 PM we took our bus for Chandigarh. One more Kailash trek was completed.

Recommendation for everyone we really want to go trek like 4500 meters and above start Jogging and some daily exercises. Quit drinking and Smoking they are not good for trekkers.

Prepare your Mind first for high altitude trek. Trekking is a challenging sport when you climb high-altitude treks.
