Klook completes us$210 million funding, embarks on a new era of profitable growth.
Successful funding round led by renowned international investors and regional corporate investment arms
Achieves overall profitability for the first time with 3x top-line growth from pre-COVID levels
SINGAPORE , Dec. 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Klook, Asia's leading platform for experiences and travel services, announces that it has successfully completed a US$210 million financing, supporting business growth and fortifying financial stability. The equity round is led by Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation from BPEA EQT, Asia investment funds Atinum Investment and Golden Vision Capital, and corporate investment arms from Southeast Asia , including Krungsri Finnovate (under Bank of Ayudhya), Kasikornbank Financial Conglomerate and SMIC SG Holdings. The round also includes bank facilities from Citi, J.P. Morgan, and HSBC.
For many Asian markets, 2023 marks the first year of travel recovery with a notable rebound in tourism figures and a gradual recovery in flight capacities. Despite this early stage in market recovery, Klook has demonstrated remarkable business success, surpassing previous milestones with a threefold increase compared to 2019 and boasting an annualized gross booking value of US$3 billion . Notably, the company also achieved overall profitability for the first time earlier this year.
Ethan Lin , CEO and Co-Founder, credits this accomplishment to the collective efforts of the team in establishing the groundwork for the post-COVID era of travel. "During the pandemic, we doubled down on our resources in merchant digitization and the expansion of our supply network, including car rentals and outdoor experiences. This positions us strongly to capture new travel trends coming out of the pandemic," said Lin.
The company's success is further underscored by its increasing brand strength, strategically building on and leveraging its app-first approach to both acquire and retain customers, with over 80% of bookings made through mobile today. Impressively, the influx of new customers acquired in 2023 more than doubled that of 2019, while repeat customers contributed to over half of the total bookings, demonstrating the sustained customer loyalty fostered by the platform.
"Leveraging strong business fundamentals that led to significant growth in revenue and profit this year, including a threefold increase in productivity (revenue per headcount), we are set for a new phase of sustainable expansion. With Asia in the early stages of post-COVID recovery, upcoming global events like the Paris Olympics 2024 and Osaka World Expo 2025, along with rising expenditures and digital adoption, the industry outlook in Asia is exceptionally positive," added Lin.
The global travel industry is projected to soar to a staggering US$15.5 trillion by 2033, with Asia Pacific leading the way as the fastest-growing region. With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11% in the Asia Pacific (from 2023-2028), almost doubling that of North America and Europe , this dynamic region is set to capture a larger share of the global travel market, driven by a burgeoning middle class, increased consumer spending, and a growing appetite for unique experiences. Klook remains focused on catering to the increasing demand for immersive travel among Asian customers and showcasing the best of Asia to inbound travelers.
"We are pioneering a transformative era of travel, catering to a new generation of more digitally-savvy travelers with bigger and bolder appetites for unique experiences. Our goal is to empower travelers to explore the world effortlessly through the Klook app, a one-stop platform that seamlessly connects them to a comprehensive range of in-destination services, encompassing immersive experiences and convenient ground transportation," shared Eric Gnock Fah, COO and Co-Founder of Klook.
Klook will strategically allocate the new funds to three key areas for growth. Firstly, in product innovation, expanding its city pass offerings to enhance traveler convenience and savings. Secondly, by scaling social and digital marketing through the Klook Kreator program, driving conversions with authentic, social, user-generated content. Thirdly, by advancing innovation through continuous AI integration. The recent collaboration with Google Cloud will integrate Generative AI across the platform, covering automated translations, content generation, and customer service chatbot. The company will also collaborate with the new strategic investors in the region, to increase market share and boost growth, tapping into the fast-growing middle class in Southeast Asia .

Klook leads Asia Pacific travel recovery with strong 300% QoQ revenue growth as it celebrates its 8th year of operations
Klook outlines a strong growth trajectory as it sees accelerated cross-border travel momentum and the relaxation of APAC border restrictions. Doubling down on inspiring travel with new experiences, marquee events, and enhancements to the platform.
SINGAPORE – Klook , a leading travel and experiences platform, announced that it is seeing accelerated cross-border travel growth in Asia Pacific with one of its strongest quarters (over 300% QoQ growth) as it celebrates its eight anniversary. As part of the celebrations, Klook’s customers can look forward to a slew of joyful deals as well as new travel features on the platform. With the recent relaxation of border measures across top APAC destinations, Klook aims to ride this trend and help consumers rediscover their joy for travel and to discover the best of what a destination has to offer.
With the pandemic in the rearview mirror, travel interest remains high with Klook seeing more than 140% year over year increase in searches on the platform. Not only has the company quadrupled its bookable services, destinations such as Singapore, Korea, Australia and Malaysia are also seeing strong recovery, with Klook exceeding its pre-covid cross-border revenue by 40% for its best performing markets.
Klook has seen an incredible surge in interest since Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan reopened their doors to tourists, indicating high demand and excitement from travelers. Since Japan’s reopening announcement, the company has seen a ten times increase in searches for Japan, with Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore travelers driving this demand.
“ As Asia’s leading travel and experiences platform, we are constantly pushing boundaries and striving to be the catalyst for tourism recovery in the region. Aside from exceeding pre-pandemic revenue in many of our markets, our strong 2Q demonstrates the strength of the brand and the industry in which we operate,” said Ethan Lin , Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Klook. “In fact, as we celebrate our eighth anniversary, I’m proud to say that we’ve emerged much stronger and more resilient over the last two years, and the best is yet to come.”
Klook has also been collaborating with tourism boards on multi-faceted partnerships to rebuild travel confidence and accelerate tourism recovery. These collaborations include creating engaging content to rekindle wanderlust, co-curating and co-developing new and unique experiences to cater to changing consumer behaviors, and creative regional marketing campaigns to encourage and capture consumers’ desires to travel again. Among the most recent partnerships formed by the company are those with the Singapore Tourism Board, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Korea Tourism Organization, and Tourism Australia.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Travelers “After more than two years of the pandemic, many travelers are excited to travel again. That is why we are doubling down on bringing the best experiences and marquee events to the platform such as Avatar: The Experience in Singapore to inspire and ignite wanderlust. The future of travel looks promising as we seize this opportunity to empower the next generation of travelers and bookable experiences,” said Eric Gnock Fah , Co-Founder & Chief Operating Officer, Klook.
As travel recovers, experiences may soon become the currency of the future with travelers looking for authentic and quality experiences to share. In order to cater to evolving consumer habits and make the process of discovering and booking experiences more seamless, Klook will introduce several platform upgrades.
One notable feature is the re-engineering of the destination discovery feed powered by user generated content (UGC) from Klook’s repository of over 7 million verified user reviews. With so much to explore in new and old destinations, both locally and overseas, customers can expect to see local recommendations from others on the best of what a destination has to offer. Klook will also introduce a new Trips feature, which allows users to automatically generate personalized trip itineraries that they can share easily with friends and family.
Joyful Deals for Travelers Klook is partnering with its merchants to bring attractive prizes and the best travel deals for consumers. From 30 September to 14 October, consumers can participate in activities such as the Klook Joy Roulette, 8pm Flash Deals, Daily Destination Deals and more. The Klook Travel Fest is also back in full force, and travelers can expect an extended week of deals and offline events across Southeast Asia featuring fun games, special deals, entertainment and destinations booths to inspire and help consumers re-discover the joy of travel.

According to the startup, it has also seen an increase in searches on its travel and experience platform by 140% year on year as Covid-19 cases in the region slow.
This has led to Klook quadrupling its bookable services, with Singapore, Korea, Australia, and Malaysia seeing notable recovery. The company also said that it has exceeded its pre-Covid-19 cross-border revenue by 40% for its best-performing markets.
After Japan announced it was reopening its doors to tourists, the travel firm said it saw a 10x increase in searches for activities in the country, and travelers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore were behind this rise in demand.
“After more than two years of the pandemic, many travelers are excited to travel again,” said Eric Gnock Fah , co-founder and COO of Klook. Moving forward, Klook will be doubling down on new experiences, marquee events, and enhancements to its platform, the exec said.

Klook Raises $210 Million to Compete With Viator and GetYourGuide
Sean O'Neill , Skift
December 6th, 2023 at 10:05 PM EST
Klook turning profitable is good news. And the travel startup's failure to get additional follow-on funding from troubled backer Softbank is unsurprising. Klook has made great strides, but it must someday find an exit for its early investors.
Sean O'Neill
Klook , an online travel agency for tours and activities, transport, and travel services, said it had raised $210 million (about $290 Singaporean dollars) in capital with a mix of venture equity and bank financing.
Bessemer Venture Partners led the equity portion, whose amount wasn’t specified. BPEA EQT, Atinum Investment, and Golden Vision Capital, and other corporate investment arms also took equity stakes. The rest of the financing included bank facilities.
The Hong Kong-based startup has now raised more than $900 million in financing since its founding in 2014. It vies with Berlin-based GetYourGuide as the most heavily funded startup in the travel experiences category.
Softbank, which supported Klook in recent rounds, didn’t participate in this one. GetYourGuide has also received substantial investments from Softbank.
Klook is considering going public either in the US or in Hong Kong, a co-founder told Bloomberg .
Klook Turns Profitable
Klook said it became cash flow positive earlier this year for the first time and that it currently has an annualized gross booking value of $3 billion. It drew twice as many new customers this year than in 2019, suggesting its name recognition is growing.
Klook no longer generates its revenue from classic same-day tour products, such as guided walking tours. It has, in recent years, branched into other products, such as offering selected Japanese high-speed train tickets or services like portable Wi-Fi.
That makes the company more relevant to what customers in the Asia Pacific market appear to want, and also makes it stand apart from GetYourGuide and Tripadvisor’s Viator, which focus mostly on selling classic tours, activities, and attractions.
Klook is also more mobile-first than its Western rivals. It said about 80% of its bookings are made through smartphones.
The startup saw revenue per employee triple since 2019. It plans to invest heavily in sales of city passes, influencer-based marketing, and artificial intelligence tools.

2021 In Review: A Year of Growth at Klook
2021 was a pretty good year for us, despite the mixed progress we’ve seen with the travel industry. Comparing 2021 to a rollercoaster ride is one way of looking at it - there were ups with increased global vaccine rates, downs with the virus variants, and ups again with special travel lanes opening.
As we approach the end, we’re proud of what we’ve achieved together. The journey we’re on together is as valuable as the final destination, filled with lessons to take us forward in 2022. So before the new year approaches, let's look back at the top 3 lessons we’ve gained from 2021, shall we?
The new normal is ours to explore and conquer
Klook started January 2021 with a bang by raising US$200 million in our Series E funding. No one knew what lay ahead, but this gave Klookers a boost of confidence and hope. It proved to us that investors believed in travel, they believed in the industry, and they believed in us.
Klookers celebrating with a virtual toast after our Series E funding in January 2021
And we were right to be confident. In February, overall COVID-19 cases slowed down with the roll-out of vaccines in many countries. Worldwide, everyone had adapted to new ways of living, and societies had learned how to adapt to the pandemic better.
We learnt that this was a new world we’re operating in, and it was ours to explore. In 2020, we experimented to find the perfect formula to conquer domestic travel and explore new ventures like staycations and Klook Live! among other things. We had established a recipe to bring relevant and unique local products to customers in their own backyard.
In 2021 we learnt that the fastest movers will emerge winners. We weren’t alone in this battle, so we partnered with some of the best players from the travel industry and beyond. From the South Korean and Thai tourism boards , the Australian government , entertainment giant Merlin , fintech institutions like Atome , to insurance providers like ZA Tech - these partnerships helped us reach more users and helped uplift players big and small, driving much needed growth in the industry as a whole.
Opportunity comes to those who are prepared
There is nothing predictable about operating in a pandemic. As the world celebrated a rise in vaccination rates, a new Delta variant sneaked its way into communities, spiking case numbers worldwide in mid-2021.
Resilience was a key mindset that helped us beat unpredictability. 💪While we forged new paths ahead, it was important that we were mentally and operationally prepared to keep calm and carry on. Thanks to our experimentation in 2020, we were better prepared to deal with variants and still produce numbers with our exclusive staycation packages , local experiences, and wellness products.
Opportunities come to those who are well prepared - just months after the peak of the Delta variant, we saw countries start to open their borders again for tourism with Vaccinated Travel Lanes (VTLs). We know travel is not as straightforward as before, so we sent one of our Klookers to experience the first VTL flight to South Korea from Singapore in November! We also saw the rise in international product purchase, which indicates that international travel is recovering. It's an encouraging sign!
The future remains unpredictable, new challenges may arise outside of the pandemic, but 2021 has proven that Klookers are a resilient bunch who are prepared for anything!
Our impact goes beyond travel
The global shutdown in the last 2 years has taught us that no man/woman is an island - we are all part of the human race and everything we do will have an effect on others. Our impact goes beyond travel, and we have a real opportunity to create and pass on joy to our customers, our merchants, our society, and to each other.
We continued our Klook Cares efforts across the region. In Singapore we encouraged locals to donate their SingapoRediscover vouchers to low-income households, rough sleepers and migrant workers . In New South Wales, Australia, our teams helped revive and digitalize wine tourism in Hunter Valley with exclusive wine tasting tours.
In April, we launched PATH - our core beliefs of P ush boundaries, A sk for and give feedback, T ake Ownership and H elp each other. PATH forms the foundation of Klook’s culture , and drives the actions and interactions of Klookers on a daily basis. We didn’t come up with PATH from scratch - hundreds of Klookers contributed through focus groups and feedback to let us know what brings them joy in the workplace.
But this is only the beginning. After all, great company culture takes active and constant work to build and maintain. From interns to leaders, we want to build an environment where Klookers are proud to say they belong to, and feel they are contributing to.
Our values crystallized in the form of PATH in 2021
We also learnt that rest is important in order to reach greater heights. In October, we declared it “Wellness Month” at Klook - because we believe we need to be joyful ourselves in order to create joy for others . We took our wellness efforts up a notch through regular mindfulness sessions, global wellness webinars, and local care days and packages. We recognized and thanked each other through Klook Salutes , and learnt to be grateful for all that we have achieved together.
To sum up, if 2020 was about innovation and discovery , 2021 was definitely a year of growth for all of us here at Klook. We grew the business by growing our collective resilience, and we’re excited to see what more opportunities 2022 has in store for us!
