Fun day out even in the rain!

Raining out so we decided safari would be a good day out. Knowsley doesn't disappoint. The Camels caused a traffic jam when decided to lie down across the road. Lions, giraffes and rhinos in touching distance and an ostrich who acted like he was taking tickets from each car. Let's not even start on the edge of your seat drive through the baboons!! Sea lion show is fun for all ages too followed by the aerial experience. A great family day out.

Went here as an afterthought and very pleased we did. Driving around animals who were all going around there own business was great fun. The baboons were the highlight though climbing over the car and pulling things off other visitors cars. You can go around as many times as you want and can then have a walk around the rest of the shows and walk with the bats. A really top day for the family.

visited with hubby and grandchildren aged 2 & 8 they got a bit bored at the start of the drive through as it was mostly loads of deer apart from a couple of camels the lions were good and one walked in front of our car so the girls enjoyed that. would have been good if one of the lanes could have been kept free for cars wishing to move on as we sat behind cars who didn't move for ages and at one point all they were looking at was ducks. We decided to risk the monkey enclosure and not go the car friendly route never again we were lucky and came away with just a few footprints and poo but the car in front had his trim ripped off and they were just starting to eat his Arieal when we managed to make a hasty exit. After the drive round we visited the elephants and giraffes on foot be warned the giraffe house smells absolutely disgusting. As the weather wasn't sure what to do we ate our picnic in the car then visited the small fairground rides were £2 each or £10 for a wristband and I was able to go on free with my 2yr old granddaughter. We also saw the sealion show which was ok but I've got to say I've seen much better ones. The admission cost us £33.20 as we booked online that was 1 adult 1 senior 1 child and 1 child aged 2 who was free.

knowsley safari in the rain

Visited here on Saturday 1st August. We had booked online so got 20% off our tickets which was a good saving, booking can be done even on the day of visit so definitely worth doing! Seen plenty of animals on the safari drive although not very close up due to the rain! Problems then started when we got out of the car. Went for lunch in the Oasis Restaurant (voucher for another 20% off in map) the food was expensive which was to be expected but the staff were all so miserable! No one smiled the whole time. I was a bit worried what the food would be like as I don't eat in McDonald's type places but the burgers were really tasty, and not cheap like I was expecting. They also came on brioche buns which was nice. Kids meal was slightly more disappointing. We ordered a hamburger meal for my 8 year old sister, which priced at £4.55 was steep for a kids fast food meal. She commented that the burger had a funny taste and she didn't want to finish the second half of it, when I tasted it the burger used was a much cheaper one and didn't taste very nice. Although the tables were being cleared, they weren't being wiped so they were a bit sticky and grubby. We then bought my sister a wristband to go on the rides, again no smile, barely 2 words said to us. The sealion show at 3 was definitely the highlight of the day! Sealions were really entertaining and the trainer was great. Ice creams were next, about 3.45, the girl looked really unhappy and she didn't hide it well either, no conversation, no thank you or goodbye and definitely no smile! I would suggest one big training session on how customers should be treated! Overall though it was a good day and we all enjoyed ourselves, just a pity the staff were not welcoming to anyone who was there that day!

We visited Saturday, family of four. We arrived early (just after10am), weather was bit poor but not to busy when driving through. The kids loved it. Thankfully just as we arrived in monkey part it was pouring down and they'd just been fed so weren't to bothered about cars driving through. We took a picnic and sat by shop under cover as yes... it was still raining!!!!! We decided after lunch we'd drive around again and thankfully half way round the sun came out. We paid ten pounds for each child to have wrist band for the fair rides and adults were allowed on too, which I thought was very good. We also enjoyed the bird show and bat house but missed the sea lion show (sadly). It was a good and fun family day out and would definitely go again. Well worth the money.

Visited here on the 29/7/15 it was well signposted to get to, however it was quite expensive at 54 £ for 2 adults and 1 child, animal's are very few and far between, you would be better visiting a zoo in our opinion, the monkey enclosure was a highlight however, but be warned they can be very destructive at one point we had around 5 monkeys on our car but no damage( not through lack of them trying though) one vauxhall corsa took alot of damage as did a renault scenic. There is a place to walk around and see elephant and giraffe enclosures, and a highlight as in any place with animals the merecats, I'm not to keen on insects and my girlfriend and son couldn't wait to drag me to the bug house, however it was closed for refurbishment? In the school holidays??? ( was this a blessing in disguise though lol) the fair ground rides cost extra to go on which was disappointing considering price, if there is zoo nearby visit that instead.

Knowsley Safari Park review

June 7, 2016 by Jenni

Knowsley safari park review

A couple of weeks ago we took Lucas to Knowsley Safari Park *. The safari park is an impressive 5 mile wild animal safari drive as well as a walk round park like you would expect of a zoo. It is currently home to over 750 fascinating animals.

Knowsley safari park

I really couldn’t have picked a worse day to go, it was pouring down to the point that we couldn’t see out of the windscreen driving there on the motorway. However, we didn’t let this dampen our spirits and were excited to see the animals up close.

Knowsley safari park

As you enter the drive, there are 3 paying kiosks to minimise the wait of entering. You follow the drive round and can either turn left to the car park to walk around or continue straight to go into the safari drive. There are also some toilets that you can park next to if you need to use them before going into the safari part. We went round the safari first, my favourite part of the drive is seeing the lions walking so close to the car in their enclosure and couldn’t wait to see Lucas’ reaction. Unfortunately, due to some changes in the lion group they weren’t in their normal enclosure as they needed to be monitored closely. We still saw them but it wasn’t the same experience as I have previously had, I will check before we go next whether they have been reintroduced.

Knowsley safari park

Due to the rain a lot of the animals were hiding, the deer were out in full force, nothing put them off! When we did spot the animals though, it was amazing, seeing them mixing together in a natural type habitat without any bars. We spotted a couple of Zebra, Rhinos with babies, Buffalo, Tigers and Camels. We didn’t go into the monkey enclosure as we were booked onto the Baboon Bus at 12. The safari drive took us about 40 minutes but would have taken longer if it wasn’t for the rain and if the lions had been out.

Knowsley safari park

The weather cheered up and we parked up and had a bit of our picnic before getting on the Baboon Bus. The bus takes you around the full safari, not just through the monkey enclosure. The bus driver introduced himself and said he wasn’t a tour guide but would tell us anything he could. Turns out he knew pretty much everything there was to know, he was very knowledgeable and friendly throughout the journey, pointing out the animals and telling us about them.

Knowsley safari park

Once we drove into the monkey enclosure they were jumping all over the bus, swinging from rope that hung from the bus. Lucas found it highly amusing, touching the window where the monkeys were. We spent about 20 minutes in the monkey enclosure and probably just under an hour and half on the bus.

Knowsley safari park

Once the bus pulled back into the park we had a walk around looking at the other animals. There are some more lions in the park, we also saw sea lions, tortoises, meerkats, birds of prey, elephants and my favourites, the giraffes. There is a bat cave but we decided not to venture in their until Lucas is a little older. There are also fairground rides and a train that you can go on, we will definitely go on the train next time we visit.

We had a fab day out and even with the rain at the beginning it didn’t spoil it. There is plenty to see and do whatever the weather x

I love visiting zoos with my two small children, have never ventured into a safari park yet though but have heard great things about Knowsley Safari Park. It looks like a great day out. The Baboon Bus, though! OMG haha. Have you seen the On The Buses holiday film where they’re driving in the safari park and there’s chimps getting on and driving it and a lion prowling in at the back?! I’d be too scared of this happening (even though I know it couldn’t!) I’d be papping myself lol!

BOM's first winter forecast for 2024 declares it could be one of Australia's warmest on record

A group of pedestrians walking along a footpath by the Yarra River on a sunny day.

The Bureau of Meteorology's (BOM) first winter forecast of 2024 has confidently declared one of the warmest on record throughout Australia.

It has also slightly favoured above average rain across a wide swathe of the interior and the east.

The BOM's modelling showed most of Australia will have both minimum and maximum temperatures of about 1-2 degrees Celsius above average.

And for most of Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and the eastern seaboard, there is more than 70 per cent chance this winter would be amongst the hottest 20 per cent of winters.

Heat map of Australia

If the forecast proves correct, this year could challenge last year's record warm winter, which brought the national temperature 1.53C above the 1961-1990 baseline average.

While the balmy winter forecast does not indicate the complete absence of cold spells, frost and snow, it does virtually ensure temperatures will be higher than normal when averaged across the entire season.

The bullish outlook is mainly due to the ongoing record high sea surface temperatures around the globe, which warm the overlying air — but is also influenced by Australia's warming climate, which has seen the temperature rise 1.5C since 1910.

Graphic of Australia on the world globe

Why the winter rain forecast may need an adjustment

While the temperature outlook is unambiguous, how much rain falls across Australia is less straightforward due to the far more variable impact climate change and warm oceans have on precipitation.

For most of Australia, the outlook suggested the odds of it being wetter or drier than normal is about 50-50, grading to a 70 per cent chance of above median rainfall across pockets of the interior.

It indicated a 70 per cent chance of below median rain for small parts of the Kimberley, Top End, and the South Australian coast.

Graphic map of Australian indicating rainfall

Is there really no strong indication of whether or not winter will be wet or dry?

As winter approaches and the seasonal forecasts are updated, there's a distinct possibility the chances of a wet winter will increase due to a major spanner in the works – a possible La Niña.

Since La Niña is on the radar, why isn't it already factored into the forecast?

The BOMs model used to produce our seasonal outlooks is somewhat of an outlier amongst global models – by holding the Pacific in a Neutral phase during the coming months, while several other forecasting agencies indicate a rapid cooling.

If Pacific Ocean water temperatures drop to La Niña levels this winter, the odds favouring a wetter season will shift upwards, especially across Australia's central and eastern inland, a trend which would only intensify further into spring and summer.

Graphic of Australian rainfall

The additional cloud cover associated with La Niña would also reduce the probability of above average daytime temperatures.

How the BOM can forecast the weather months in advance

Because day-to-day weather can't be predicted with accuracy more than a week ahead, sometimes people assume seasonal forecasts must be unreliable.

Weather models work by ingesting millions of observations to simulate the atmosphere, then use the laws of physics to calculate how conditions will change into the future.

However, there are key differences that allow a seasonal forecast to have accuracy months in advance, and well beyond a standard weather forecast.

  • 1. Seasonal forecasts cover a longer time period of up to three months and therefore smooth out the day-to-day noise of fluctuating weather. In other words, a seasonal forecast is just averaging the weather over an extended period compared to normal.
  • 2. Seasonal forecasts are produced from model ensembles, which involve running a weather model dozens of times and averaging the output to offer guidance on the likelihood of any given scenario. For example, a model could be run 100 times, and if 70 of those runs or "members" show above average rain over a particular location, that would equate to a 70 per cent chance of above average rain.
