Once on top, in the monsoon season, you will find a vast lake and fog throughout. A local villager sells tea and snacks, which you can indulge in after finishing the hike.
If you are lucky, during heavy rains, you can also witness a reverse waterfall on one of the fort’s sides, which is a sight in itself!

Korigad Fort Trek – Exciting one day trek near Pune Mumbai (INR 300)
Hello to my lovely readers!! Which season do you like the most? Personally, the monsoon season is my favorite as I love bike riding amidst the foggy weather and the lush green surroundings. Monsoon is in full steam and it’s a great time to explore the nearby regions. Are you looking for a one-day easy trek near Pune or Mumbai which will bless you with such lush green surroundings? If yes, Korigad Fort Trek is waiting for you!!!
Korigad Fort Trek
Hey Abhi, am I fit enough to do this trek? How would you rate the trek in terms of difficulty? From last year and a half, I have been regularly answering these sorts of questions. I agree that the treks can be categorized in terms of difficulty level, but is fitness the actual barrier for someone to not complete the trek? I believe it’s more about mental toughness to complete it rather than the physical fitness.
Foggy conditions on Korigad Fort Trek
Anyways, Korigad Fort trek is a very easy trek located near to touristy town Lonavala. Standing at an elevation of around 920 meters from sea level, Korigad fort top gives some stunning view of the Aamby Valley city along with the Tung and Tikona fort . What’s more exciting about this trek is the route which takes you to the base village of the fort. The entire route is lush green passing through dense jungles and many waterfalls falling in the vicinity.

How to reach Korigad Fort from Mumbai and Pune
Korigad Fort lays 20 kms south-east of Lonavala. Lonavala is well connected to other parts of the country via railways . On reaching Lonavala, you can inquire for a bus that goes to Aamby valley/ Peth Shahapur (base village of Korigad fort trek). The frequency of the buses is quite low, so plan accordingly. Get down at Peth Shahapur bus stand, the Korigad fort trek starts from here. I would suggest you to rent a bike from Pune/Mumbai/Lonavala to reach the base village as the road journey amidst nature will leave you spellbound.
Note : If you are referring to Gmaps to reach Korigad Fort, don’t type in Korigad Fort as it shows you the route from inside the Aamby valley where you won’t be permitted to go. Just put in Peth Shahapur on Gmaps to get to the exact location from where Korigad fort trek begins.

The difficulty level of Korigad Fort Trek
I would rate Korigad Fort Trek as an easy level trek; it’s a perfect trek for the beginners. It is perfectly suitable for all age groups; you can take kids and elder ones in your family as well. There are mainly two trekking routes to reach the top; one from Peth Shahapur and the other from Ambavane village. The route from Peth Shahapur is easy and the most preferred one.

My journey to Korigad Fort Trek
It was my second visit to the Korigad Fort; previously I visited the fort a year back in the month of October. Looking at the route to reach the fort, I knew I was definitely coming back in the next monsoon; to experience the foggy climate and lush green surrounding which was missing in October.
Lush green surrounding on way to Korigad fort
Owing to heavy rains from the last couple of weeks in Pune, I thought there couldn’t be a more perfect time to have a visit to the Korigad Fort. I along with my friend started from Pune around 10 AM. There are basically three routes to reach the base village of Korigad fort from Pune.
- Pirangut – Maale – Valane – Pomgaon – Peth Shahapur( Korigad fort base village)
- Pirangut – Chhale – Kolvan – Hadashi – Peth Shahapur
- Pune – Lonavala – Kurvande – Lion’s Point – Peth Shahapur
We decided to take the Hadashi route and return by Valane route as both of these routes passes through various villages. I always prefer the village route over the highways as they are generally more exciting and full of surprises.
Numerous waterfall on way to Korigad Fort from Pune
Our decision to take the village route was justified as we were blessed with lush green valleys, breathtaking landscapes, numerous waterfalls and beautiful lakes throughout the route.
Dense jungle route
Beautiful Waterfall on route to Korigad Fort
It generally takes around 1.5 hours to reach the base village from Pune but owing to the dozens of pit stops we took along the breathtaking route, we made it to the Peth Shahapur (base village) in around 3 hours.
Very low visibility at Lonavala – Aamby Valley Road
Parking is provided just near to the bus stop; we were shocked to know the bike and car parking charges being INR 50 and INR 100 respectively. We decided to park our bikes in a temple nearby (not sure if it’s actually allowed).
Breathtaking landscape En route to Korigad Fort
The fort was completely covered under the clouds. There are basically two start points; one starts along the huge network tower and the second from the tar road on the left side, passing through the village and taking a right from the temple over there. Anyway, both these route meets at a common point. From this point continue walking for around 10 minutes and you will reach a point where the trail divides into two. Take the right trail and you will need to walk through a jungle. After a few minutes, you will reach the footsteps (around 300 stairs) of Korigad fort.
Korigad Fort Trek trail
It generally takes around 30-45 minutes to reach the top from the base village. Also, there are many shelters all along the trail, which helps to catch your breath. If you are doing the trek in monsoon, just be extra cautious as the route becomes a little slippery. In monsoons, generally there is water pouring from the stairs which adds joy to the trek.
Water falling from stairs
At the top it was very foggy, visibility was very low and heavy winds were blowing. We enjoyed having Maggi and Tea in such chilly and foggy conditions. I had already covered the perimeter of the fort on my previous visit, so opted not to do so.
We started to descend around 5:30 pm and were at the base by 6:00 pm. Owing to heavy rains and dark surroundings, we canceled our plan to take the village route to reach back Pune and decided to take the Lonavala route.
Foggy conditions at Korigad Fort
View from top of Korigad fort
Note: The route from Korigad to Lonavala passes through the tourist spots like Lion’s point, Bhushi Dam , Shivling Point, Shivsagar Lake, Lonavala Lake, and Waterfall. You can take pit stops at all this point to add delight to the journey. But remember to start early as traffic conditions are very bad in Lonavala especially in monsoon season.
What to see on the Korigad Fort
Apart from the breathtaking view of Aamby Valley and the surrounding region, there are a few other spots which are worth a visit.
- A temple to its patron goddess Koraidevi which has been renovated recently.
- The fort has 6 six cannons among which the largest one is called Laxmi Toph and is located near the Koraidevi temple.
- There are two lakes on the top of the fort.
- One can enjoy walking along the entire perimeter of the fort (about 2 kms).
- In monsoon, you can enjoy the view of the waterfall falling from this fort.
Cannons at Korigad Fort
Ganesh Darwaja – the entrance of Korigad Fort
Food and stay options at Korigad Fort
In the monsoon, a few villagers set up their tents at the top and provide basic food like Poha, Vada Pav, Maggi, and Tea. At the base also there are a few small Dhabas which provide local food.
Friend enjoying Tea at Korigad Fort trek
One can set up a tent anywhere on the top, but remember the winds are pretty strong in the monsoon season.
The tent that I carry during the treks is Quechua Arpenaz 2 Tent . It has enough space for 2 people.
The Korigad fort trek can be done at any time of the year. Personally, I would recommend you to do this trek in the monsoon season, as the entire region is lush green and experiencing the foggy weather at the top is a moment to remember. In summer season it becomes excessively hot at the top, so try to do the trek early morning.
So what are you waiting for? Pick up your bike and drive to the beautiful Korigad fort. I assure you that you will remember this road journey for your entire life!!!

- Some FAQS about KORIGAD Trek
Basic Info : Korigad is a beautiful hill fort located at around 20 kms from Lonavala near Amby Valley. This is a fort which you can visit during any time of the year for one day treks. Some of the structures on the fort are still intact and the views that one would get from the top are just splendid.
Routes : From Pune, one has to head towards Lonvala via the Old Pune-Mumbai highway. Please do not take the expressway as you will have to pay a heavy toll on that road. Once you get to Lonavala, you have to take a left from Purohit Chikki centre and take the Amby valley road. If you are referring to GPS on the way, google maps will show you a road through Amby valley. Do not take that road as the security guys will not let you in if you tell them that you are heading to Korigad.
Difficulty Level and oher useful tips : Difficulty level is easy. It takes just 1 hour to get to the top of the fort. Once you start from the base village, for 15 minutes you will need to walk through a jungle and then there are just steps to get to the top. You will definitely enjoy the view of Amby valley that you get while trekking.
What to see on the fort :
- 2 Lakes on the fort - These are filled with water all the time, except in the summer season
- Temple of goddess Korai Devi
- Walls of the fort - These walls are still intact and you can do a circle around the trek on these walls.
- Six Bombard Cannons - These are the old cannons which used to be used during the early ages in Wars. 5 are small in size and the largest is located near the Koraidevi Temple.
- Beautiful views from the fort
Camping Info : Although we did not camp here, we think its a pretty good fort for camping. There are plenty of open spaces on the fort where you can set your campsite.
There are plenty of Monkeys on the fort, but they would not be a problem during the night time. During the daytime, just ensure that you do not show them any eatables.
If you do not have tents, the Koraidevi temple can be used as a shelter and can accomodate atleast 10. The villagers at the base village can help you with firewood and to carry you stuff to the fort.
You can refer to the below link for equipment for trekking. Things to carry for overnight treks .

Trek to Korigad Fort near Aamby valley, Lonavala
by Rajaram Sethuraman · Published Jul 29, 2011 · Updated Jul 24, 2016
This is a great place to go for a one day trip from either Mumbai or Pune due to the following reasons
- The Location: A plateau with unhindered views on all sides with a view of many other forts and dams
- Drive to the location: Cross all of Lonavala’s famous view points and get to the fort through some wonderful roads OR do some adventurous driving and go through remote backroads from Mulshi
- The Trek: An easy trek of around an hour. It took us a little more with two 3 yr old kids, drink breaks and lot of photo breaks. The trek has it all – open path, an optional shortcut through a dense jungle and a flight of stairs at the end
- The Fort: Though nothing much remains of the fort, the walls of the fort are intact and you can walk on the wall for the entire circumference of around 2 km (we didn’t, though)
How to go to Korigad fort (also known as Koraigad fort) from Pune: Korigad fort is right next to the Aamby valley city and very close to Tung Fort. You have to cross Lonavala and then keep driving towards Aamby valley. The base village for this fort is Peth-Shahpur. If you start early, you can stopover at the various Lonavala points like Bushi Dam , Lions Point and the shivling peak . Lonavala traffic is very bad , at least on the one main road. So, better to go into Lonavala pretty early in the day. See at the bottom of this post for an alternative route/round trip
Once you drive down the ghat section after the lions point and keep going for another 15-20 minutes, the hill of korigad fort should appear on your left. There is nothing else this tall in this area, so you shouldn’t miss it. There is an open area just below the hill for parking. It is just another open area, but there are touts there who demand money (and give receipts too!) saying that it is the official parking for Korigad fort. They charge Rs.20 for a bike and Rs.50 for a car. I probably could park on the middle of M.G.Road for a cheaper amount!/p>
If you want to save few hundred metres off the trek, then drive on the road to the left (just before the hill) and park near a temple (not sure abt the parking place). A path from this temple directly joins the trail. Along the normal route, you start from the parking lot, go towards the tower and then continue on. The initial path can become very slippery in case of rain and it is the path through the water flows and is very muddy. But, not something to worry about.
The path goes around the back of the hill and then your start climbing. So, the trail is not visible from the road or the parking lot. Once you cross the initial stretch, the path turns a sharp right and you start to go towards the back of the hill parallel to the bottom. After some distance, you start to see small lamp posts. These have been erected by the Sahara group to aid trekkers , as Korigad is a popular night trekking destination. When you see the first such lamp post to your right. you have two options. You can continue straight on which will take you amidst few bungalows and then take a u-turn to go up or you can just start climbing the hill right at the base of the lamp posts. It looks steep, but is not. This short-cut is an enjoyabale 10 min climb through some dense lush growth – almost resembling a rain forest.
Then come the stairs. Initially, they start off pretty ok, but the last stretch is a bit steep. But the last stretch is not too long. Also, there is a viewpoint with a big resting area. Once you cross the stairs and pass through the main darawaza, you are on top of the hill. Once you are on the stairs, you get a good view of the development in Aaamby valley city.
The main darwaza covered in moss (during monsoons) is a great sight. There were also lot of monkeys around this point.
Once on top of the plateau, if you have the interest, you can spend hours enjoying the view on all sides. The fort walls are intact and you can walk all along the wall. The top also has two fresh water ponds (not safe for swimming, as there have been few incidents here) and couple of temples. There are also many intact cannons on top.
The way down (same as the way going up) was fast and easy and took less than an hour. It also rained when we were coming down and it was fun trying to fit all of us and two kids into the 2 kids umbrellas we carried with us! All of us enjoyed the trek including the kids, as can be seen in this photo (from a photo session) taken after the trek.
There is another route to reach Korigad from Pune. You can either go through this route or make it a round trip by returning on this. But this route is remote and not advisable late into the evening. If you have been to Mulshi or Tamhini Ghat , you would have come to a fork before Mulshi and you would have taken the left. The road on the right goes to Ghusalkhamb, which is actually the base village for Tung fort. If you go to Korigad from Lonavala, you will pass this village before you reach Peth-Shahpur. But, i have read on many forums that the road condition is 50-50, whatever that means! A third route exists, that from beyond Mulshi. After crossing Mulshi and towards Tamhini, there is a road sign to the right marked as Lonavala. This goes through lot of interior roads and reaches Korigad fort and then onto lonavala. I have seen this road being mentioned only on biker forums and the reviews says this unspoilt road is amazing during the monsoons. Drop in a comment if you have been on any of these routes.

Not sure of a direct bus connection. You can get to Ammby valley by bus and then something local.
can we go there by bus from mumbai?
changing my comments on the blog. thanks
Hi Rajaram, had been to Korigad yesterday. It was a great visit thanks to your blog. Just a word of advice if you can add to your blog. Two guys drowned in the pond you are referring to in the blog. They are probably non swimmers but it still didn’t seem safe. We were there for about an hour on top and the public who dived in to help managed to save one person but the other two bodies were also not found till we left. So I guess there are better places to swim and this seemed best avoided.
