We take a lot of pride in our philosophy of doing things the right way and this definitely applies to our boats and captains. We own 13 of the newest sport fishing boats in La Paz.

Charter Overview

La Paz, Baja Sur, is a fascinating two-hour drive from the world-famous Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. La Paz is the great undiscovered fishing area of the Sea of Cortez. (Gulf of California). The Baja peninsula is over a thousand miles long. It begins just below San Diego and projects almost straight south into tropical waters. Cabo is located at the southern Pacific tip. La Paz, the capital of Baja Sur, is located on the opposite side of the narrow Baja peninsula. The inland sea is a gigantic fish trap. Here the waters are typically more calm, warmer, and are not fished as heavily as offshore of the Cabo area. Fish are abundant throughout the inland sea, and fishing is available year-round. Whether it’s dorado, yellowtail, tuna, sailfish, wahoo, grouper, snapper, marlin, skipjack, roosterfish, sea bass, sierras, etc., La Paz is a premier spot for fishing these varieties. FURTHERMORE, the fishing areas we frequent are considered fully sustainable at current sports fishing levels! This is a huge difference from much of the world’s fishing locations.

The waters extending up inside the Baja peninsula are some of the most active in the world for sea life. From the inside southern tip of the Baja and extending straight north to Loreto, are 23 deserted islands that serve as fishing meccas. Outside these island perimeters are reefs, shoals, and corals. Just beyond, are the deep blue waters that are home to some of the best and most desired sport fishing species on the planet!

Live Bait  vs. Trolling

We’re not into long boat rides trolling and dragging lures back and forth across the ocean a zillion miles from shore in big waves. That’s boring. Our Tailhunter style of fishing is with dead and live bait close to shore where the big fish live! YOU hold the rods! YOU fight the fish, not the boat! There’s more action…more FUN!

La Paz has held the world record for roosterfish, a 114 lb whopper, for over 50 years. The areas in and around Bahia de La Paz offer fantastic fishing for pargo, yellowtail, and roosterfish, and the bite is always good. Offshore, into the Sea of Cortez and on the east side of Isla Espiritu Santo, dorado, sailfish, swordfish, and striped marlin are waiting to be reeled in.

Tips & Tricks for Fishing Trips in La Paz

You can fly into Los Cabos International airport, or San Jose del Cabo airport, but either way you’ll need to secure either a rental car, private van, or bus to get to La Paz. If you take a bus, make sure you take the Todos Santos route (it’s shorter).

La Paz has several options for charters and fishing. There are plenty of small pangas to rent with local guides who will take you to spots where you can catch pargo, roosterfish, grouper, snook, and yellowtail. Some will even take you farther out to catch larger pelagic fish species. If you plan on fly fishing bring your own gear, but otherwise you’ll find that the local captains will have what you need, and anything else can be purchased in town.

The Sea of Cortez is teeming with dorado, which can be caught from pangas, either with medium tackle or on the fly. Anglers use the currents, weeds scum lines, floating debris, and frigate birds to pinpoint dorado, as well as flying fish, water temperature and color breaks. You may wish to use some chum to entice strikes, and then pitch Pacific flat iron herring, known locally as sardinas, into the strike zone before casting the fly.

In December and January in the Sea of Cortez swordfish are plentiful, and the numbers increase with the full moon. In the summer, striped marlin are hot in the Sea of Cortez between La Paz and Loreto.

North of La Paz is Loreto, a smaller town with excellent beaches and beautiful waters. Five islands just offshore provide a range of ecotourism activities, and Loreto is a quieter, less commercial beach that those on Cabo San Lucas .

In the bays and along the shore in the fishing is rock oriented, which means using heavy tackle (50lb gear) and reeling in 20 – 40 lb fish on average. Flat calm days are better, because when the winds are blowing, the fishing is difficult, so pay close attention to the wind report.

Top sport fishing species in La Paz

The Amberjack species are a game fish that are found both in the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Jigging and live bait fishing are the best techniques to target these magnificent fighters. Greater Amberjack can weigh up to 170 lb (80 kg).

Just by looking at a roosterfish ( Nematistius pectoralis) , you can immediately tell how they got their name. Their trademark dorsal fin resembles a giant mohawk or the comb of a rooster. Beyond the dorsal fins, the rest of the roosterfish body is unique as well. The biggest roosters weigh more than 60lb.

Striped marlin ( Kajikia audax ) can be told apart from blue marlin due to their “stripes” of blue that run vertically down their bodies. Striped marlin is lighter than blue marlin, but their body shape and even colouring remains the same aside from the stripes. These marlin can weigh up to 180kg (400lb) and have a maximum length of 4 m (12 ft).

The Blue Marlin ( Makaira nigricans ) is probably the most wanted fish in the sport fishing world. The magnificent fighter usually feeds during day time on fish, octopuses and squids. Blue Marlin is mainly caught trolling with artificial lures or with dead bait (bonito, mackerel...).

Blue Marlin

Fishing season in la paz.

La Paz is known as a fishing hot spot. Each year tournaments are held with significant cash prizes.  That is no coincidence, with locations like Tecolote Beach, Espirito Island, Cerralvo Island, Los Cerritos Beach, and many others, there is absolutely no shortage of opportunity or variety of species to pursue here.

Fish species in La Paz

There are as many as 900 fish species in the Sea of Cortez including the most prized gamefish in the world like Marlin and Rooster Fish all potential catches. Most of the summer and early fall seasons are prime time for both fishing success and to take a relaxing beach vacation outdoors. These are the most popular species in La Paz:

Rooster Fish

With it’s distinctive dorsal fin and striped scale pattern, the Rooster Fish is a true stand out.  Like many fish species, big roosters take big baits and live bait generally produces more sizeable catches. However if you seek the challenge of enticing your catch, poppers and swimbaits can absolutely produce as well.  Especially if you’re seeking some entertainment value, their topwater strikes are quite the spectacle to be seen. Early morning and late afternoons from May through August are the best times to boost your probability of success catching them.

Mahi Mahi are known for a variety of attributes among saltwater species but when it comes to table fare, the Mahi Mahi is hard to beat. Renown for their flaky white tender meat, the Mahi Mahi is highly desirable. They also happen to be a blast to catch! Summer and well into fall are great times to catch Mahi Mahi. Espirito Santo Island is known as an area to produce solid catches.

Yellowfin Tuna

Tuna are also one of the most desired edible gamefish of the seas, be it saltwater or freshwater. Yellow Fin Tuna will challenge your tackle with long runs and powerful fighting prowess that is more than a match for most any angler.  They do not have great vision so the lower visibility hours of the day and using bait can prove successful. Los Cerritos Beach is one location known to produce good Yellow Fin Tuna action and the winter season is known to be a great time for them.

There are few images more iconic to an angler than the outline of a Marlin leaping from the ocean over the backdrop of the summer sunset. Marlin are famous for a variety of reasons including their acrobatics, enormous size, distinctive bill, and are sought after trophies given their gorgeous beauty. The peak of summer is prime time for Marlin beginning in June and a great location to give a try is Tecolote Beach for near shore angling.

La Paz Fishing Seasons

La Paz offers a great summer through fall getaway for anglers.  It’s a perfect escape destination after a long winter stuck indoors for many of the tourists that come to town. May through September is considered peak season for fishing while well into the fall can also be a great time for fishing inshore.

Fishing Calendar

Fishing in La Paz is good year-round, but there are distinct times of the year when you should come if you want to catch certain species. Here are some favorites:

Roosterfish: March - June

Striped Marlin: June – October

Blue Marlin: June – October

Sailfish: June – September

Wahoo: June – November

Dorado: May – November

How to fish in La Paz?

While true of many fishing endeavors, you will want to try the early morning hours or later evening hours to improve your chances of angling success in La Paz.  The most desirable gamefish species are on the move during these hours when limited daylight means less visibility for prey, setting the scene for some of their best hunting and therefore your best catching.

Shore Fishing

Slack tide is the preferred time to fish from shore in La Paz.  These run the 2 hours before and 2 hours after a high and low tide. The quieter beaches away from the city center are preferred and you will need to stay 820 feet at a minimum from anyone in the water.

La Paz Fishing Charters

La Paz offers a variety of highly reputable and reviewed charters to choose from.  There’s real value in hiring a professional for a lot of things you want to accomplish in life.  Especially with a limited window of time available on vacation in a world class location like La Paz, invest in a great experience by hiring a guided charter trip.

TOP FISHING TECHNIQUES IN La Paz

Bottom fishing is probably one of the easiest methods of fishing, the technique is really simple, consisting in a rig for fishing on the bottom with a weight attached to the line, and a hook at the end of the line.

Tuna fishing is a fishing technique that brings together all the ways to fish this incredible predator. You can fish via trolling, spinning or jigging among others. Tuna is a fierce fighter, so adequate material is required to face this magnificent fighter.

Trolling is a fishing technique where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or natural bait, are drawn behind a moving boat. Trolling can be done both in-shore and off-shore.

The trolling speed depends on the type of bait and the fish species. Where tuna and marlin like a speed of 6 to 10 knots, other species such as dentex or seabass should be targeted with a trolling speed of 3-4 knots maximum.

Marlin fishing brings together all the ways to target this amazing predator. Marlin are mostly caught trolling artificials or dead bait behind the boat at a speed ranging from 6 tot 10 knots. This fish is a fighting machine so make sure you have adequate fishing tackle on board.

Fly fishing is a unique style of fishing compared to most other forms available. In the past, it was a technique that was used solely for freshwater fishing but that has changed and it is now possible it saltwater as well.

The casting style used to present a fly is much different from any other form of fishing.

Spin Fishing is a technique of fishing that is used to target fish that are usually close to the top of the water. Throwing a lure of any description and retrieving it in a variety of different speeds and rhythms to produce a bite from a nearby fish.

Squid fishing is a style that has been adapted to target these tricky saltwater animals. You will be using a technique almost the same as the normal spin fishing technique.

Casting out and slowly retrieving the squid jig with different speeds and retrieval styles.

Pop fishing or "popping" is one of the most exciting ways to fish as you can witness all the action close to the surface of the water.

This style of fishing involves dragging a lure known as a popper across the surface of the water with a short sharp retrieving action. The lure slaps against the water creating a popping sound and fires up nearby fish.

Shark fishing is a sport that combines fisherman against one of the oldest animals on the planet. It is an exciting form of fishing when productive and is usually done, but not always, by chumming the water close to your fishing grounds and fishing with an alive or dead natural bait.

This type of fishing generally requires a decent amount of travelling away from land. You will be fishing in potentially large depths of water but generally chasing tuna or marlin type species that live closer to the surface. Famous pioneers like Ernest Hemingway made deep sea fishing and big game fishing very popular. For deep sea fishing large, expensive boats and strong fishing tackle are required.

Jigging is the fishing technique where an angler fishes a metal lure, called a jig, vertically. This is opposed to spinnerbaits which move through the water horizontally. Basically, a metal lure is dropped to a certain depth (normally the bottom) and then reeled in with rhythmic, jerky moves to attract the predator.

TOURISM & OTHER ACTIVITIES

La Paz is an ideal getaway for the angler looking for not only fishing adventure but also alluring natural beauty. Some creature comforts of home like fine dining await you with a climate conducive to a variety of outdoor activities. Balandra beach is one of the best in Mexico with amazing sunsets. You can even swim with sea lions and whale sharks once you’ve had your fill of catching fish.

Visit Isla Espiritu Santo, a Unesco World Heritage site which includes 244 islands in the Sea of Cortez. Isla Espiritu Santo is surrounded by azure waters and secluded inlets. An easy day trip, you can rent a kayak and go snorkeling while you bask in the fullness of nature’s beauty.

Go for a walk on the Malecón, La Paz's waterfront, with its wide sidewalk, beaches, pier, sculptures by local artists and unimpeded views of the sunset. It is 3.5 miles long, (5.5km), from the Marina de la Paz in the south to Playa Coromuel in the north.

Learn about gray whales at Museo de la Ballena (Museum of the Whale). Audiovisual displays explain the lifestyle and migrations of gray whales that live and breed in the local waters. The museum's foundation promotes the study and conservation of whales, and as you walk through a soundtrack of whales in the wild might make you want to go on a whale-watching tour, there are several in Baja California Sur.

Go Whale Watching!  Through the months of January and April the Sea of Cortez is home to migrating whales that have traveled 20,000 miles from the Bering Sea to reach the warm and calm waters of La Paz.

LEGISLATION / REGULATIONS

If you are fishing from the shore, you will not need a fishing license. However, Mexico has strict fishing regulations for fishing from boats. Essentially, every person aboard a boat that has fishing equipment on board is required to have a license.

You can purchase a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly fishing license via CONAPESCA.

You can find more information on their website, Conapesca

If you plan on using a fishing charter, most charter boats include fishing licenses in the cost of the charter, but to be sure it is best to ask when booking your trip.

How much does it cost to rent a boat to fish in La Paz?

Depending on the size of the charter fishing boat and on the duration of your fishing tour, you’ll pay more or less for the tour. The price for a private 8 hour La Paz fishing trip with a panga (this is typical open mexican type of boat) is around $475 to $500. An 8 hour private trip with a 40ft charter will cost you $1200. You can book a magnificent luxury fishing yacht from $4375 for the day.

What does the price include?

The price usually includes the captain, fishing tackle, fuel & lures. On every listing we indicate whether drinks and food are included.

Make sure you know if bait, the lincenses and the local tax (16%) is included in the price or not as this can make quite a difference in the final price.

Once you’ve made a booking, the captain will contact you to arrange the meeting point and the departure time. Also, we recommend you contact the captain a couple of days before the tour to confirm the weather forecast.

Is the La Paz area safe?

How likely are we to catch fish, do the captains speak english.

This is a very popular question and one that I certainly asked before I started to come down. La Paz is ranked the 3rd safest city to visit in Mexico behind 1. Talum and 2. Puerto Vallarta. In comparison It is much safer then most big cities in the US such as Los Angles, NY city or Chicago. Petty theft can occur anywhere in the world so common sense is always important when travelling.

The short answer is they speak some English. More importantly they are able to greet you and explain what needs to be done when its time to reel your fish in. All of the captains I use are multi generational fishing captains and have spent their entire lives fishing the local waters.

Can we keep some fish to bring home?

I personally have made over 50 trips down to the La Paz area I can say almost every trip has been different. However, I can only remember one occurrence that I went a whole without catching a single fish. The weather has a significant impact on the fishing and this is why I recommend building in two rest days or alternate fishing days into your trip to maximize your opportunities..

Can we drink the water or use ice cubes?

Although I personally do a lot of catch and release fishing I love to eat the high quality fresh fish I catch. So yes, you can definitely keep some of the fish you catch and we will vacuum seal and freeze it for you and you can then check it as luggage at the airport in a cooler that you provide.

The tap water is perfectly safe and yes you can used cubed ice in your drinks.  Most folks drink bottled water much like in the US but the tap water is used for making coffee and brushing your teeth.

Can we fly into La Paz

Yes, However most folks find it easier to fly into SJD then shuttle up. Flying into La Paz requires either a border crossing in San Diego or a layover in Mexico City.

Incredible fishing in la paz, mexico.

La Paz is home to one of the world’s most unique sport fisheries. La Paz has been the gateway to the Sea of Cortez since the colonial city was founded by the Spaniards. As the capital of the state of Baja California Sur, we like to say we’re “tourist friendly” but not “touristy.” La Paz is a quiet, colorful city that sits calmly on a beautiful Bay with access to incredible fishing waters that will challenge novice and experienced anglers alike with year-round action and several dozen species of gamefish depending on the time of year.
