As you use the NeoLAB LAMY Safari smartpen on the digital paper, the n code technology (the tiny dots on each page) registers your pen strokes and also what page you are writing on. When you’re connected to the Neo Studio app, you can see your writing appear in real time on your smartphone with minimal lag.

As you write, you can use the options on the screen to change the color of your text and the line thickness as you write, and there’s even an undo and redo button. The bundle does come with a ‘paper controller’ bookmark so you can customize your strokes without using your smartphone – just hover the smartpen over your choice for a second.

When you go back later to edit the pages, you can use a highlighter tool, the lasso tool to select a portion of your notes and move it around, and there’s an eraser too.

The feature that really sets the NeoLAB LAMY Safari apart from the rest is its incredible ability to sort and search through all your writing and drawings. To search your notes, go to the app and tap on the magnifying glass in the top-right corner. You can input a keyword to search for and the app will find the page you wrote this word on. To really keep everything organized, you’re also able to add tags (do this by clicking on the # symbol to your notes and search them that way). So, if several different pages all relate to one project, you can label it as #SpecialProject (or whatever you list) and group all the pages together.

The NeoLAB LAMY Safari allows you to easily share pages in PDF, PNG, and SVG formats. This’ll allow you to share your musings quickly via email and social media. You can share either just a page, or the whole notebook – great if you’re collaborating on a project. There is also the option to share your writings and drawings as GIFs and MP4s, too, which we found very fun to play with.

There’s also a handwriting replay option, which is very helpful when reviewing diagrams – it’ll show you a ‘ghost’ version of your writing and replay the strokes you made on the page (you can choose to replay this in the actual time, or speed it up x2, x4 or x8).

• Remarkably accurate translation
• Lots of different transcribe languages available

The translation feature is remarkably accurate. It’s not 100%, but we were extremely impressed with how well it managed to decipher our handwriting, from carefully printed letters to rushed cursive scribbles. It also picked up bullet points, arrows, and even emojis (admittedly, this was a happy accident on our part)! Basic math symbols and numbers were transcribed well, but not those required for more advanced math and science formulae, such as using squared, cubed, or writing out fractions (best to leave these notes untranslated and view on the screen). It would be nice to have a character and emoji cheat sheet to fully understand what options are possible, but we had fun testing out what would work and what wouldn’t.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, first you’ll need to set the language you’ll be writing in and want converted into digital text (this’ll be your transcribe language). Within the app there are 34 transcribe language options to choose from. English is the default language, so if you want to write in another language, you’ll need to download that specific language pack (English is included within every language pack, so you can write in both English and your selected language without having to swap language packs).

We tested out the German, Spanish, and Japanese languages to see how well the transcriptions would work recognizing those extra accent marks and unique punctuation. We’re happy to report that the translation didn’t miss an umlaut, sharp s (Eszett), or tilde. We were especially impressed with how well the Japanese transcribing worked – the NeoLab LAMY Safari smartpen was able to recognize and tell the difference between hiragana, katakana, and kanji symbols (well, mostly, we’re putting any errors here down to our rusty kanji skills). So, those learning a new language will find this feature very, very useful, especially those studying Japanese (pair this with the playback mode and it’s a great way to practise your stroke order when learning kanji).

The NeoLAB LAMY Safari comes with a basic getting started info sheet, but after that you’re on your own. Within the app itself there’s a user guide, which we highly recommend you read first before putting digital pen to digital paper. If you’re new to smartpens you might feel a little bit lost, but just have fun and play around with it – you’ll soon figure out what’s what.

To get started you’ll need to download the Neo Studio app onto your smartphone. The app is available for both Google Play and the Apple App Store. It’s compatible with Android 5.0 or later and iOS 13.0 or later.

Once you’ve downloaded the app and opened it, you’ll need to create an account for Neo Studio using your Apple ID or using a Google account. This is a little bit annoying, but this is so that you can sync and access your notes from anywhere – just open your internet browser and go to app.neostudio.io to access your writing.

It was really easy to connect the NeoLAB LAMY Safari to our smartphone using Bluetooth. You just hold the power button on the smartpen for 3 seconds and a message pops up on the app to confirm. Note that while it’s cool to see your writing come to life on screen in real time, you don’t have to be connected to the app to use the smartpen. The NeoLAB LAMY Safari can store hundreds of pages of text in its internal memory, then later, whenever you’re ready, you can sync your pen to the app and upload your writing to edit, tag, and archive.

Once you’ve finished making notes, you can sync all your data to the web. By selecting the sync data option, (they recommend using Google Chrome), your notes will be stored on the NeoStudio website . You can choose to sync manually, or for the forgetful among us, you can turn on the auto sync options, or even select your own sync time settings so your notes will sync at the same time each day.

With its sleek, black looks, this writing instrument has a timeless, classy design that gives off an air of professionalism and will appeal to everyone. The smartpen is actually modeled after the LAMY safari, a cult classic among fountain pen aficionados.

It might seem a bit chunky, but thanks to its ergonomic design it’s a dream to write with. The NeoLAB LAMY Safari feels sturdy and is a little weighty at 26.6g, but this is normal for smartpens as they need to house all the electronics. Despite this, the NeoLAB LAMY Safari still feels comfortable to hold and won’t cause your hand to fatigue as quickly as you might think. The triangular grip makes a nice home for your fingers and helps keep them out of the way of the camera on the nib, which picks up your writing.

It writes nicely, but keep in mind that this is a ballpoint pen so it won’t be as smooth as a gel pen. As it has a replaceable ballpoint cartridge, we found that this can rattle about a bit and makes noise when you write – not a deal breaker, but it can get on some people’s nerves.

Unlike some smartpens, with the NeoLAB LAMY Safari you’re not just stuck writing in your special digital paper notebook, you can visit the Neo smartpen website and download Ncode PDFs to print off for free. You can print off plain paper, grid paper, dot paper, and even a checklist or log sheet style paper. Of course, there is also a whole range of ncode digital paper notebooks, paper pads, and journals to purchase from the Neo smartpen shop . The point being that you don’t have to shall out extra cash if you don’t want to.

Absolutely perfect for lectures, the NeoLAB LAMY Safari has the super cool function of recording your voice as you’re taking notes. When you play this back, the audio will coincide with the text you were writing. The smartpen itself doesn’t do the audio recording through, your smartphone does, so the quality of this all depends on how good your device is.

While we weren’t able to test this feature, the NeoLAB LAMY Safari can also sync with the special N Planner notebook which will then sync up with your digital calendar – when you handwrite in an appointment, it’ll add it to your digital calendar for you.

Should you buy the NeoLAB LAMY Safari all black ncode smartpen?

It’s a pretty great smartpen and for those who like to keep their notes carefully organized, enjoy journaling, or are just big fans of nice stationery. Compared to other smartpens, the NeoLAB LAMY is on the pricier side, but the translation is remarkably accurate, and the app is intuitive to use.

If you’re worry about cost, it’s great that they offer free n code paper so you don’t feel like you’re locked into buying their notebooks… but you still do need to always use special digital paper.

For those who are more into artistic drawing than notetaking, they’ll be better off with the iskn Repaper Tablet instead. People with more of a focus on voice recording, such as for during lectures or meetings, might want to check out the Livescribe Echo Smart Pen with its built-in audio recorder.

REVIEW – I enjoy keeping a paper journal, notebook, diary, log, whatever you want to call it. I use one every day to write down 3-4 tasks that I want to accomplish because I’ve found that writing them on paper and checking them off as I finish them, actually makes me more productive than putting them in an app. That’s because I have my notebook open right next to me all day so I can see it. While I love keeping a journal, there are two reasons why switching to a digital journal is always on my mind – archiving and searching. The NeoLAB LAMY Safari all black ncode smartpen is a potential solution to that issue. Let’s check it out.

What is it?

The NeoLAB LAMY Safari all black ncode smartpen (yikes, that’s a long name for a product) is an analog ballpoint pen with digital pen superpowers when paired with an Ncode notebook. I’ll explain more about Ncode later.

Design and features

If you’re into pens, you’ll already be familiar with LAMY who are well known for their fountain pens. But the NeoLAB LAMY Safari all black ncode smartpen is NOT a fountain pen so don’t be disappointed by that fact. It does feature a removable cap with LAMY’s standard pocket clip.

One indication that this is not a totally analog pen is the status LED on the barrel that glows blue while the pen is powered on, green when connected to the Neo Studio app, and red when the battery is low.

This is a ballpoint pen that uses standard D1 style ink refills that you can find on Amazon . If you click the image above on the left, you’ll notice a small window below the writing tip. This is the built-in camera that digitizes your writing in real-time and works with the Neo Studio app on your iOS or Android device to record what you’re writing as you write it in a special Ncode paper notebook.

If this looks a little familiar, you might be remembering the Neo Smartpen M1 that I reviewed a few years ago. The NeoLAB LAMY Safari all black ncode smartpen / system is basically the same thing except that the pen looks like and is branded like a regular LAMY Safari pen minus a fountain pen nib.

The LAMY pen has a power button on the barrel that you really only need to press once when you’re initially setting up the pen.

With power comes the task of recharging the internal batteries. This is done through the micro USB port on the bottom of the barrel.

Ncode notebooks

This smartpen has to be used with special paper/notebooks if you want your writing to be digitized. At first glance, these notebooks may look no different than other paper journals. They come in different styles with hard or soft covers, spiral or hardbound, etc. Neo also offers PDFs that you can use to print your own pages for free. You can see all the pages here .

The NeoLAB LAMY Safari all black ncode smartpen bundle includes the 192 page A5-sized notebook that you see above.

This notebook features an elastic pen loop, and an elastic closure strap.

Inside the notebook, you’ll find two contents pages at the front.

And there are also 2 bookmarks.

The Ncode notebook included with the LAMY pen has dot grid style paper with page numbers at the bottom and special sharing and bookmark icons at the top. But when you look much closer at the paper…

You can see even tinier dots in addition to the grid dots. These smaller dots allowed the pen and app to digitize your writing.

Neo Studio app

The app that is used with the NeoLAB LAMY Safari all black ncode smartpen is called NEO Studio and it’s a free download from the app store. Once installed, it will detect the LAMY pen and the Ncode notebook. As you write in the notebook, it keeps track of the pages.

You can even change the ink color in the app so that different portions of what you’re writing in the physical notebook appear differently in the app.

You can export your notes in the app to PDF, PNG, etc. And you can also add tags and watch a replay of your writing which is kind of fun to do for doodles more than writing in my opinion.

Another cool feature is the ability to convert your handwriting to text. The results aren’t 100% accurate but they are pretty impressive considering my hybrid printing/cursive style as you can see above. The app even converts smiley faces. Note that any drawings on a page are converted to nonsense text which shouldn’t be a surprise.

You can also search for words in the NEO Suite app and it will show the pages that contain those words which is awesome for finding info within journals.

The real-time writing from physical to digital is cool and is only slightly laggy.

Battery Life

According to NeoLAB, the pen should work for up to 11 hours of note-taking. In the NEO Suite app, you can customize the settings to turn off the pen after inactivity to help save the battery.

What I like

• Ability to sync and share what you physically write on paper to your phone/tablet and other sites
• Searching, archiving, translating features
• Looks and feels like a regular pen

What I’d change

• Include extra D1 ink refills
• Lower the price of the Ncode notebooks

Final thoughts

The NeoLAB LAMY Safari all black ncode smartpen is an interesting solution for fans of LAMY pens who would like a way to turn their notes into digital format. The pen is well made but if you’re a pen snob, you might not like the fact that writing with a ballpoint pen isn’t a smooth as writing with gel pens and fountain pens. There’s also the fact that they don’t even include 1 extra refill which I think is super cheap on their part. Speaking of money, a replacement LAMY notebook is $27. Ouch. But, you can buy other Ncode non-LAMY branded notebooks starting at $15 and you can print your own Ncode paper for free. And if the LAMY look and brand isn’t special to you, then you can get the NeoLAB M1+ smartpen which is $40 less than the NeoLAB LAMY Safari all black ncode smartpen. It’s good to have options right?

I’m a fan of the Neolab N2 pen and have enjoyed Lamy Safari analog pens for a long time, so I immediately bought Neolab’s Lamy smartpen.

PROS —> Sets up quickly and easily. —> Pen accepts any D1 standard ballpoint refill. —> Can be used on any Ncode paper sold by Neolab. —> Lamy pen is a lot more comfortable than Neolab pens.

CONS —> Neo Studio appears to recognize only one smartpen at a time. —> Compared with the N2, the Lamy’s default darkness and line width displayed in Neo Studio is way too narrow and light. —> My N2 rattles slightly but the Neolab Lamy is at least twice as loud. This is so annoying that I would not feel comfortable using it in a professional meeting. The noise would simply be too distracting.

L.T. I actually like the feel of the M1 pens better than the Lamy. I didn’t notice the rattling until you mentioned it and now that’s all I hear 😉

Maybe the refills need to have that give to accommodate the sensors? A few years ago, I used a Livescribe smartpen and had a rattling problem, too. I was able to silence that rattle by carefully wrapping a thin piece of Scotch tape around the refill. I might try that with the Neolab Lamy.

A greater annoyance for me is how unless I intervene via Neo Studio and increase the line width, the first two settings produce light gray results. This is a function of the Lamy pen because in the same notebook the N2 records a solid black line even at the thinnest (default) setting. Perhaps Neolab will update the software?

CORRECTION —> If two pens are turned simultaneously, Neo Studio will recognize both. You swipe between them.

NOTE —> The pen’s beeping sound can be turned off in the N2 settings. I can’t find a way to silence the beep in the Lamy.

I used the M1 pen for a few years and have 10 filled notebooks. I was eager to try the new form function of the Lamy. The Lamy recognition is inferior to the M1+ and the N2. The line weight and sensor alignment is off and the digital version is not regular. I interacted with customer support( a day delay in responses) and they will not replace or issue a refund unless the item is unopened. The M1+ has a firmware version of 1.8 and the Lamt 1.0. I recommend you do not purchase until they get the kinks out of this version.

Do refills rattle in your Lamy? Both the M21 supplied with the pen and D1 refills that I use in my N2 rattle. I asked Neolab tech support whether it’s OK to wrap a thin piece of tape around the refill in an attempt to silence the rattle and they said no. The reply —> “We do not recommend you to wrap a piece of a thin piece of tape around the refill.”

Try a zebra D1 refill. They are ever so slightly thicker. In zebra pens non zebra D1 refills also require a bit of tape to not rattle.

These look almost identical to the moleskine pen +. Any thoughts?

LAMY x NeoLab Safari Ncode Pen Notebook Bundle

This LAMY x NeoLab safari all black ncode smartpen and NeoLab digital paper notebook set is able to capture all activity through the Neo Studio App which is connected through Bluetooth. When the writing instrument is online, everything is captured in realtime and visible on your device. However, you can also use it offline as every word, sketch or drawing is stored in the pen itself, so there is a digital copy of all your notes and ideas. The viewing window on the pen shows the charging status of the pen instead of the ink levels which are shown in the original LAMY safari pens. The pen has a USB port and a full charge using a Micro USB cable permits 11 hours of non-stop writing.

The matching cap has a black metal clip on the side which is ideal for clipping into pen cases; this cap can also be placed on the end of the pen when you are writing. The grip of the pen is hexagonal shaped providing a comfortable feel. 

The NeoLab notebook comes with ink-permeable paper and special LAMY ruling. The optoelectronic sensor reads the ncode pattern printed on the paper of the LAMY digital paper notebook and recognises handwriting and pages. Each page contains a tiny pattern which is barely visible to the naked eye. These codes hold information unique to each page, including pen position. The NeoLAB ncode sensor reads the codes from the blank surface - the processor (CPU) contained in the pen performs the complex mathematical calculation to locate the pen position on the page.

Lamy Safari & Rhodia Webnotebook

After doing a fair amount of research, I ordered a Rhodia dot grid webnotebook to pair with my charcoal Safari with a B nib. Everything I've read has lead me to believe the webnotebook is one of the best for fountain pens, and admittedly I was impressed by how lovely and smooth the paper was when I got it. But both my B and M nib Safari's don't write smoothly on the paper whatsoever. I would compare the feeling of writing on it to the way it feels writing on a piece of glossy cardstock, where the ink just skims over the surface of the paper and doesn't quite dry. Lots of hard starts and skipping as well.

Both have t-10 cartridges with blue ink. My immediate thought is that the paper is coated with something that makes it super smooth but not so accepting of certain types of ink, although this contradicts everything I've heard. I'm bummed. Has anyone experienced this before? Both Safari's write beautifully on every other paper I've tested, albeit with decent amounts of of bleeding.

I've had a similar experience. Recently bought a Broad nibbed Safari, and i've had a few occasional skips on the 90gsm Rhodia paper (Webnotebook , 'R' pads). Writes perfectly on the 80gsm Rhodia pads and plain copier paper.

My other non-broad Lamy Z50 nibbed pens seem to do fine on 90gsm Rhodia

The Rhodia Webnotebook is filled with Clairefontaine paper. I had similar problems with both of these papers, though recently, the Clairefontaine is quite reliable and the Rhodia gives only little trouble. So, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems. I don't know what t-10 cartridges are, but would like to suggest that you try a different ink. Some inks don't harmonize with some papers.

The Lamy Blue ink is a "dry" unlubricated ink. That means it doesn't flow fast, in order to avoid excessive feathering, and it also doesn't have the proper chemistry to make the nib lubricated. I feel in some papers, specially bad paper, it behaves great and feel smoother, because bad paper suck more ink from the pen, reducing the feel of dryness of this ink. Also, some nibs are shaped in a way that some papers feel better. I find Lamy ink both a curse and a blessing because of this. Basically, it is an ink designed for kids and regular people, not fans of fountain pens that notice differences in smoothness. They just need some ink that will work with any paper, and Lamy Blue does this job.

I recommend that you try some Diamine inks, or maybe Pilot Iroshizuku and Noodler's. They will feel a lot more lubricated and will probably flow better. You could also try Waterman or Aurora inks if you want standard trustworthy regular inks. There are plenty of other good brands which I did not mention.

Make sure to write with blotter paper under your hand, the oil from your skin makes some paper even slicker.

Is it fair for an intelligent and family oriented mammal to be separated from his/her family and spend his/her life starved in a concrete jail?

It's the Lamy ink I guess. I had similar problems with my Al-Star and the cartridge that came with it. Switching to Pelikan 4001 or Rohrer & Klinger, also quite dry inks, solved it. My son is using the Lamy T-10's in the :Lamy ABC on school supplied, rather cheap paper and has no trouble at all.

I'm not a huge fan of Rhodia as I find pens that work fine on other paper skip on it.

Rhodia uses high end paper meant for fountain pens/dip pens. It's designed to not feather, bleed or spread. Ink is slow to dry on Rhodia but this is a good thing. Pair the premium paper with ink more suitable.

I have 2 Lamy Safaris with converters and use Diamine, Noodler's, or Iroshizuku ink. They are smooth wet writers on my Rhodia pads. Don't fret this is part of the appeal of fountain pens, getting to mix and match nibs, paper and ink.

Bought some of the new Lamy Copper Orange cartridges today. Again quite skippy and dry, and as you suggest dryer than Pelikan 4001 inks. 4001 Turquoise was in the Safari previously, which worked well without problems

Thank you for all the great responses. The first Safari I got was a gift and I fell in love with it as someone who's never used fountain pens regularly. I recently picked one up with the broad nib and thought I might upgrade to a notebook with a better paper (was using Moleskine before). It sounds like my next move is picking up some cartridge converters and testing out different inks. The Clairefontaine paper feels nice so I'd love to have an ink that works on it.

I've had the same experience with Rhodia Webnotebooks. Lovely smooth paper but it's like writing on glass with some of my pens. They just slide about. I much prefer the paper Rhodia use in their top stapled notebooks
