Safari: How to Get Search Bar Back to the Top & Disable Landscape Tab View

With iOS 15 Safari, the app has a whole new layout which brings many updates to the way you browse in the app. In Safari, the address bar is now located at the bottom of your iPhone screen, and in landscape orientation tabs will now appear in a list across the top. If you find these updates inconvenient and want to revert to the previous iOS 14 Safari layout, we'll show you how!

Move Address Bar to the Top of Safari

Remove the tab bar from safari landscape view.

Moving the search bar to the bottom of the screen has been one of the biggest changes to Safari in iOS 15. Luckily, if you don't like this change, you can switch it back! Safari now has two tab modes: Single Tab and Tab Bar. With Single Tab mode, your Apple address bar is displayed at the top of Safari and you must tap the tab icon to switch between tabs. With the Tab Bar mode, your URL address bar is displayed at the bottom, and you can swipe between open Safari tabs. Below, we'll cover how to get the URL bar back to the top of the page in Safari. 

How to Move Address Bar to the Top in Safari (Shortcut)

Perhaps you find yourself accidentally swiping between tabs or you find it disorienting to have the URL bar at the bottom of your screen. Whatever your reason, this is the fastest way to switch into Single Tab mode and move the search bar to the top of Safari while browsing. 

Now your Apple search bar will be displayed at the top of the screen. If you ever change your mind and want to revert back to the Tab Bar mode (being able to swipe between tabs is pretty handy!), follow the steps above and tap Show Bottom Tab Bar.

How to Place the Website Search Bar at the Top in Settings

This is a different method to adjust the same setting shown in the shortcut above. Below, we'll cover how to move your iPhone or iPad search bar to the top in Settings. 

The landscape tab bar in Safari displays open tabs across the top of your screen and allows you to tap and switch between them, much the same way you would on your laptop. This is a handy update, as it means you no longer have to tap the Tab icon to switch tabs while browsing in landscape view. However, if you feel the landscape tab bar is crowding your screen and cramping your style, you can disable this feature:

• A segment of the website title

Furthermore, the active tab will appear grey and more highlighted than others. Switching between tabs has never been this fast before in Safari on iPhone. Besides this, you can also quit a tab by tapping on the Exit or X icon next to the corresponding tab within the Landscape Tab Bar.

On top of that, re-arranging Safari tabs couldn’t be any easier. Just like Mac, you can drag a tab wherever you want and drop it in a convenient position. Additionally, tap the Tab Overview icon to glimpse every open tab in a horizontally zoomed-out layout.

Apart from this, the rest of the Tab Bar functionality stays the same. For example, tap on the ‘AA’ icon to access the toolbar, website settings, desktop mode, toggle reader mode, etc.

The Landscape Tab Bar is available on iPhone models with iOS 15 or later versions, such as iOS 16 and iOS 17. The new tab bar takes some getting used to, but it is useful

It's not as if the redesigned tab bar in Safari for iOS 15 has some enormously better capabilities on any one website than it did before. It does have a new way of moving between sites, but really what it has is a different approach, an unfamiliar design.

Apple wants tabs to get out of your way and that's laudable. It's more than laudable that Apple has brought the new Tab Groups feature to iOS 15, it's brilliant - and it's different. Everybody either loves Tab Groups or simply has no reason to even know they're there.

Whereas no one can use Safari without using tabs, so a major redesign is a very big and very unavoidable deal. Or it was until Apple introduced the option to go back to the old design .

How to switch between the old and new tab designs

On your iPhone, go to Settings , then scroll down to Safari . There's a straightforward toggle, showing one icon for Tab Bar , one for Single Tab .

Tap the one you want, and you're set. Just don't change it too quickly, give the new tab bar a chance.

How to use the new tab bar in iOS 15

When you open Safari, the page that you see first is whatever site you were last reading — and there's now a floating bar at the bottom. That bar contains the address of the site, plus a Share button and one to do with rearranging tabs.

How to go to a new site

• If the bar disappears, tap and pull on the site to scroll — and bring the bar back up
• Tap on the address of the current site
• When it highlights, tap the small delete button to the left
• Start typing a new address in there — or a new search term — and press Go

That all sounds clear, sensible, and easy, and it is. Except for how the tab bar is at the bottom of the page and you probably have very, very many years of experience of reaching for the top of the screen instead.

It will take you time to unlearn that, but there is an advantage to the new tab bar. You may even like it for this, it's a revised way of moving between tabs.

How to move between tabs on the tab bar

• Bring up the tab bar
• Press on it, then swipe to one side or the other
• You're immediately taken to the next tab, assuming you have more than one open.

You do have more than one tab open, you do have very many more. We're not judging.

And so this swiping is a lot faster than before. Previously you would have to tap the tab button, find what you want from the thumbnail images, and then tap to go into the tab you were after.

Yet you can still do that. Bring up that tab bar, tap on the tabs button at far right, and you get a view of all your tabs. Rather than the old Rolodex-style of thumbnails where you had to move forwards and backwards to see you what you want, it's now a Photos-style grid.

From that grid, you can tap to go into any tab. You can also tap on the small delete button to get rid of the tab completely.

What you can't do, unfortunately, is drag the tabs around to arrange them. You can press and hold on any one tab and get a menu that gives some sorting options, but they're limited.

Your choices are to Arrange Tabs by Title , or to Arrange Tabs by Website .

Except, if that seems a bit constrained, something else the new design brings is the ability to organize tabs more. This is crossing into the Tab Groups feature, but as you press and hold on any tab's thumbnail, you do get two particularly key options.

If you have six tabs open, pressing and holding on one gets you a menu that offers to let you move all of those tabs to an existing group. And you also get the option to move them all to a brand new group.

What you can't do is pick a few of the tabs and move those, it's all or nothing. Or at least it is at present. Maybe we already know something that'll be in iOS 16.

Safari has been a mainstay of Apple's iPhones since the very beginning, but iOS 15 brings some major changes to the venerable web browser's appearance and functionality. Perhaps the biggest alteration is in the tab bar, the part of Safari's interface that governs how you interact with all the websites you've opened. 

Most crucially, Safari's tab bar on the iPhone is now at the bottom of the screen by default, instead of the top. That takes some getting used to, not to mention an adjustment of muscle memory — assuming that you don't just go and make Safari's tab bar return to the top of the screen .

The location of the tab bar may have changed, but other functions in Safari remain the same, even if they might look a little out of place if you keep that tab bar at the bottom of the screen. iOS 15 beta testers may also be confused, as Apple made several tweaks to the look of Safari in response to feedback from users.

To help you navigate around the redesigned Safari browser on your iPhone, here's a guide on how to use the tab bar in Safari on iOS 15, along with a reminder on how to handle some basic interactions.

How to open a new browser tab in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the tabs button in the bottom right corner of Safari.

2. Tap the blue plus (+) button on the left side of the location bar.

3. Alternatively, tap and hold on the tab button, then tap New Tab on the pop-up menu that appears.

How to close a browser tab in iOS 15 Safari

1.   Tap the tabs button in the right corner of the location bar.

2. You'll see an overview of all your currently open tabs. Tap the 'x' in the top right corner to close a tab.

3. Alternatively, when you're viewing the page you want to close, tap and hold on the tab button, then tap Close This Tab. 

This step also allows you to close all tabs at once with a single tap.

How to share a website in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the Share button in the center of the location button.

2. On the ensuing screen, tap the contact you want to share a website link with (it will be in the last app you connected with them) or pick an app for sharing the link.

The Share icon is also what you tap to perform other actions with a particular web page. These actions include copying the link, adding it as a bookmark or favorite, searching for a word or phrase on the page, and adding to your reading list.

How to reload a website

If you tested an early beta of iOS 15, reloading a website was unnecessarily complicated, forcing you tap a More button in the tab bar; only then could you access the reload button. But later on during the beta process, the reload button was added to the tab bar — just tap it when you want to reload a page. 

Alternatively, you can drag down from the top of the webpage to reload it in iOS 15 Safari.

How to activate Reader mode in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the Aa button on the left side of the tab bar.

2. Select Show Reader.

3. You're now in Reader mode. To close Reader, just repeat steps 1 and 2, only this time, select Hide Reader.

Alternatively, pressing and holding the Aa button automatically launches Reader mode.

How to switch between browser tabs in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the tab button along the bottom strip of icons in Safari. 

2. Select the tab you want to open.

Alternatively, you can swipe upward on the location bar to see all your tabs. 

You can also quickly move between taps by swiping the location bar left-to-right or right-to-left to switch to the next or previous open tab, though we've found this to be tricky on iPhones with smaller screens.

How to open a new private browser tab in iOS 15 Safari

1. Press and hold the tab button in the lower right strip of icons in Safari.

2. Select new Private Tab from the pop-up menu.

3. The tab bar will change colors, signifying you're now in private browsing mode.

4. To exit a Private tab, tap on the Tab icon again. Then select the Private drop-down menu.

5. From there, select your other, non-private tabs.

How to Move the iPhone Safari Search Bar Back to the Top in iOS

Long-time iPhone users may not prefer Safari's bottom address bar introduced in iOS 15, but Apple offers a quick and easy solution.

The Safari search bar was near the top of the iPhone's screen for the longest time. But starting with iOS 15, Apple moved the search bar to the bottom, making it easily accessible on big iPhones. Plus, the addition of an effortless swipe gesture even made it easy to switch tabs.

However, if you do not like the bottom placement of the tab bar, there is a way to move the Safari search bar back to the top of your iPhone. Here, we've listed the steps to help you do that.

Two Ways to Get Back the Old Safari Search Bar on iPhone

Modern versions of iOS offer two ways to move the address bar to the top and improve your Safari experience on an iPhone . The first is from within the Safari app, while the second involves using the iPhone Settings app. We've detailed both ways to move the Safari search bar on your iPhone to the top below:

1. Move the Safari Search Bar to the Top Directly in Safari

This is the more convenient method, as you can do it straight from the browser:

• Visit any website in Safari on your iPhone.
• Tap AA located on the left of your address bar.
• Now, choose Show Top Address Bar . Instantly, the search bar will move to the top and stay like this.

Even if you close Safari and relaunch it, the address bar will stay at the top, making this a quick and easy way to switch its position.

2. Move Safari's Search Bar to the Top From Settings

This is the usual method to find all Safari-related settings in one place. You can also use the option here to move the Safari search bar back to the top:

• Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
• Scroll down and tap Safari .
• Under Tabs, select Single Tab .
• Now, open Safari, and you'll find the search bar at the top.

How to Switch Back to the Bottom Safari Search Bar

If you change your mind or wish to give Safari's bottom address bar a try, here's how to switch back and use the tab bar:

• When you are inside Safari, tap AA from the top-left.
• Tap on Show Bottom Tab Bar .
• Alternatively, you may go to Settings > Safari and select Tab Bar .

What Is the Landscape Tab Bar Option in Safari's Settings?

Inside Safari Settings on an iPhone running iOS 15 or later, you'll see an option called Landscape Tab Bar , which is enabled by default. When you rotate the iPhone in landscape mode and use Safari, you will see all the open tabs on the top, just like you would on a computer browser.

When this particular option is off, this thin strip showing your open tabs is absent. Look at the image below to understand the difference. You may want to keep this enabled for better tab management.

Apple's Safari Redesign for Bigger iPhones

iPhone screens are increasing in size. As a result, most people have trouble reaching the top search bar when using an iPhone one-handed. But this redesign to move the Safari search bar to the bottom of the screen aims to fix that problem. Plus, this change introduces the tab bar, which is quite handy.

However, it's nice to see Apple give long-time iPhone users the option to move the address bar back to the top in case they prefer the old-school look and feel of Safari on the iPhone.

How to use and manage your tabs in mobile Safari on an iPhone

Managing your tabs in Safari on an iPhone has always been a challenge, mostly due to the small screen size. But with iOS 15, Apple has improved the way you navigate and use your tabbed pages. A new tab screen lets you see and manage all your open tabs in the form of viewable thumbnails. The tab bar itself now rests at the bottom of the screen, though you can move it back to its more familiar spot at the top. You can also create tab groups to organize your tabs. Here’s how to work with tabs in mobile Safari on your iPhone.

First, make sure you’re running iOS 15 or higher. Go to Settings and then General and select Software Update. You’ll be told that your OS is up to date or prompted to install the latest update.

Access the address bar’s location

By default, the Safari address bar in iOS 15 now appears at the bottom of the screen. Thanks to the new location, you can more easily access all your open tabs. With the address bar nestled at the bottom, simply swipe left and right on it to shift from one tab to another ( Figure A ).

With your iPhone in landscape mode, you can also view and access all your tabs at the top of the screen. To enable this, go to Settings and select Safari. Turn on the switch for Landscape Tab Bar. Go back to Safari. Put your iPhone in landscape mode, and the tabs now appear at the top ( Figure B ).

Change the address bar’s location

Okay, maybe you don’t like the new location of the address bar. No problem since you can easily change it. On your iPhone, go to Settings and select Safari. Move down to the Tab section. The option for Tab Bar displays the address bar at the bottom. Change to it to Single Tab, and the address bar returns to its spot at the top. You can more quickly make this switch within Safari itself. Click the aA icon on the address bar and select Show Top Address Bar or Show Bottom Tab Bar to jump back and forth ( Figure C ).

Access your tabs

To access your tabs on an iPhone if the address bar is at the top, tap the Tabs icon in the lower right. Your open tabs appear as thumbnails. Tap the + icon to open a new tab. Tap a specific thumbnail to open its page. Tap the X icon for any tabbed page you want to close. To sort your tabbed pages, press down on one of the thumbnails and select the option for Arrange Tabs By. You can then arrange them by title or by website. Tap Done to exit the tab screen and go back to your current page ( Figure D ).

Organize your tabs into groups

At times you may have so many tabs open in Safari that you lose track of them all. In that case, you may want to organize them into groups so you can more easily find them. Tap the Tabs icon. There are two ways you can create a tab group. Press down on any thumbnail, tap the option for Move To Tab Group, and then select New Tab Group. Alternatively, tap the Start Page or X Tabs entry at the bottom and select New Tab Group from X Tabs. Name your tab group and then tap Save ( Figure E ).

You can create an empty tab group and then add pages to it. At the tabs screen, tap the Start Page or X Tabs entry at the bottom and select New Empty Tab Group. Name the group and tap Save. Now open a page you want to add to the group. Tap the Tabs icon. Tap the plus icon to open another page to add to the group. Tap the plus icon again to open a third page. Follow the same steps for each page you want to add. When you’ve finished adding the pages, return to the tabs screen to make sure that all the pages appear as thumbnails. Tap Done ( Figure F ).

To view a tab group you just created, tap the Tab icon. Tap the entry at the bottom and then select the group you want to access ( Figure G ).

People complained fiercely about the new tab bar layout in Safari on iOS 15 . There was so much criticism that Apple provided a setting to change the tab layout back to how it was before. Once you get used to it, though, navigating Safari’s new tab layout is very easy and efficient.

Less “Travel Time” to Type Your Searches

Since the tab bar, and search box, are at the bottom of the screen, you don’t have to reach as far to use them. For most people, once they become accustomed to the layout, it should make typing addresses and search phrases much easier.

Think about it this way. Your keyboard appears at the bottom of the screen. With the new bottom layout for your tabs, your fingers don’t have to move from top to bottom, or vice versa, when you’re opening new tabs and then tapping in what you want to search for.

Dealing With the Tab Bar’s Disappearing Act

As you scroll through a web page, you’ll see the tab bar disappear. The bottom of the screen will offer a slimmer space, and you’ll see the page URL or title. To get the tab bar back, do one of two things.

You can tap at the bottom of the screen, in the thin bar with the web page title or address. The tab bar will reappear, along with the address/search box. Alternatively, scroll back up on your page. That will also bring the tab bar back.

Navigate Your Tabs with a Swipe

To switch between tabs, you can still do things the old way by tapping the tab icon and then choosing what you want. There is an easier way, though, if you only have a few open tabs. Just swipe left or right on the tab bar, and you’ll quickly move between your open web pages.

If you really want to put your tabs to how they were before, just go to Settings > Safari , and change Tabs to Single Tab .

iOS 15: How to move the Safari address bar back to the top

In iOS 15 , iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey, Apple has dramatically redesigned Safari for the first time in years. The iPhone gets the biggest changes, with a new tab bar at the bottom of the screen and a bunch of new gestures and touch targets. To say that the changes have been “controversial” would be an understatement, with our own Jason Snell calling it “a mess.”

But if you’re struggling to get used to the change, you don’t have to keep it. After criticism during the beta period, Apple has given users the option to go back to a single tab view with an address bar at the top of the screen, like it used to be! Here’s how:

• Open Settings
• Select Safari
• In the Tabs section change from Tab Bar to Single Tab

You can also change the bar at the top back to white, rather than matching the main color of the site, and opt to hide the tab bar when surfing in landscape view. We typically suggest users give interface changes a week or two to get used to them, as changing habits and muscle memory takes time. But if you’ve given the new Tab Bar on the bottom an honest shot and prefer Safari on iPhone to have the address bar at the top like, you know, every other web browser on earth, it’s very easy to change.

iOS 15: Check Out Safari's New Tab Bar, Tab Groups, and Tab Switcher

In iOS 15, Safari has been completely redesigned with easier-to-reach controls in mind. Foremost is a new, compact tab bar that floats at the bottom of the screen when you're not inputting a URL address. Safari on iOS has also inherited the Start Page from macOS Big Sur, and you can now create tab groups to allow you to easily access them across devices. Let's take a closer look at how it all fits together.

The Start Page

First seen in macOS Big Sur, Safari's redesigned Start Page is where your Bookmarks, Favorites, Frequently Visited sites, Siri Suggestions, iCloud Tabs, Reading List, and Privacy Report all live.

Tab Bar Functions

At the bottom of the Start Page is the new tab bar. Apple has consolidated several controls into the new floating bar, which spends most of its time at the bottom of the UI while you're browsing.

If you find the Tab Bar distracting you can swipe down on it to minimize it, but either way it automatically minimizes as you scroll down a page, and all you have to do to reveal it again is tap it again. (To refresh the current page, just pull down on it from the top.)

A long press on the Tab Bar brings up a menu offering options including Copy, Paste and Search, Add to Reading List, Add Bookmark, Add Bookmarks for X Tabs, Share, and Move to Tab Group. (See below for more on Tab Groups.)

Tab Switcher and Tab Groups

In iOS 15, gone is the familiar stacked card-style view of multiple open tabs. Instead, tabs are arranged as thumbnail previews in a vertically scrolling grid, while the Tab Bar functions in the Tabs Switcher view are transformed to help you organize your tabs more efficiently. A long press on the center of it brings up a menu of Tab Group options.

Elsewhere, you can long press any open tab displayed in the Tab Switcher to access options like Close Other Tabs, move the selected tab to a Tab Group (tapping this opens a submenu of Tab Groups), Arrange Tabs By Title, and Arrange Tabs By Website.

Note that iOS 15 is still in early beta, and the public beta is still a month away, so the usual caveat applies in that any of these functions could change before Apple releases its new operating system in the fall.

Better Browsing: 30 Hidden Tricks Inside Apple's Safari Browser

Safari offers a variety of features and settings to help you navigate and use the web. and you’ll find even more handy options in ios 17 and ipados 17..

Safari is Apple's default web browser on the Mac, iPhone, and iPad, which means you may take it for granted. But have you delved into all of Safari’s features and settings? Standard options like Private browsing, Reader view, and downloading files are part of the package, but there are many more things you can do.

Upgrading to iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 gives you a few new tricks, including using separate profiles, sharing website passwords, asking Siri to read a webpage to you, and setting a different search engine when in Private Browsing mode.

To install the latest OS version on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Update . You’ll be told that your device is up to date or asked to download and install the latest update.

Now, here are 30 tricks to help you have a better experience when using Safari.

1. Navigate Tab Bar

The jump to iOS 15 moved Safari's address bar to the bottom of the screen, which can make it easier to access your open tabs. To navigate your open tabs, simply swipe left and right on the tab bar to cycle through them.

2. Manage Tab Bar Location

If you’re a creature of habit and prefer to keep the search bar at the top , you have some options. Go to Settings > Safari and you can enable Landscape Tab Bar to make the tabs appear at the top of the iPhone screen when in Landscape mode. For something more permanent, select the Single Tab option to keep the address bar in its traditional location.

You can also alter how tabs are displayed on an iPad. Go to Settings > Safari and click Compact Tab Bar to shrink the amount of space your tabs take up at the top of the screen.

3. Sort Open Tabs

Sort multiple tab windows by tapping the Tabs icon on the tabs bar, which will let you see all your open tabs. Long-press on one of the tab thumbnails and select Arrange Tabs By and then choose to sort them by title or website.

iPad users can view open tabs from the Sidebar icon. Tap the Tabs icon, press down on any thumbnail, and then choose Arrange Tabs By to sort by title or website.

4. Organize Tabs Into Groups

Ever feel like you’re juggling too many tabs? One solution is to organize them into groups. On an iPhone, tap the Tabs icon and then select the icon with the three dots and lines below the number of tabs. Tap New Empty Tab Group to create a new group or New Tab Group with X Tabs to create a group out of all your existing tabs. Name your new group and tap Save . The group will now be selectable from the Tabs screen.

On an iPad, tap the Sidebar icon and then select the Tabs icon. Tap the icon at the top right of the sidebar and select New Empty Tab Group to create a new group or New Tab Group from X Tabs to create a group out of all your existing tabs. Then name the group.

You can also press down directly on a thumbnail and tap Move to Tab Group to create a new group for it or move it to an existing group. An even easier method is to long-press on the Tabs icon and tap Move to Tab Group to access your tab group options.

5. Share a Tab Group

With iOS/iPadOS 16 or higher, you can share an entire tab group with someone else as long as that person is syncing Safari via iCloud. To do this, tap the Tabs icon and open the tab group you wish to share. Tap the Share icon at the top and select the person or app with whom you want to share the group.

A link is sent to the recipient over email or text. That person can then open the link on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to view the tab group in Safari.

6. Pin a Tab

Pinning a tab lets you save a page on the Tabs screen so you can easily open it again. To pin a tab, tap the Tabs icon. Press down on the page you want to pin and select Pin Tab from the menu. The next time you want to access that page, tap the Tabs icon and then tap the pinned tab to open it.

7. Save Open Tabs as Bookmarks

Instead of saving every individual open tab as a bookmark, save them all at once. To do this, tap the Tabs icon to view all your open tabs. Press down on one of the tab thumbnails and select Add Bookmarks for X Tabs from the menu. Name the folder to house the bookmarked tabs and tap Save .

8. Auto Close Open Tabs 

The pages you open in Safari have a way of growing and growing until the browser gets cluttered with dozens of open tabs. To prevent this, you can set a certain amount of time before tabs are automatically closed. Go to Settings > Safari > Close Tabs and you’re able to set tabs to close after one day, one week, or one month.

9. Customize the Start Page

Tweak Safari's Start Page by adding, removing, or moving certain sections and choosing a background image. Swipe to the bottom of the Start page (the screen your browser displays when you open a new tab) and click the Edit button. 

Disable any sections you don’t want to see or drag and drop sections to rearrange them on the page. Under the Background Image section, select a background or upload your own and then tap the X button to see your new Start page.

10. Try Some Extensions

Safari added support for extensions on mobile with iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. To try some out, go to Settings > Safari > Extensions and tap the More Extensions link to see additional options. Tap the Get button (or the price button if it's paid) for any extensions you want to install.

You can then view installed extensions from the Extensions setting screen and enable or disable the ones you want to use. You can also sync extensions across multiple Apple devices by enabling the Share Across Devices option on this page. To remove an extension completely, press down on its icon on your Home screen and tap Remove App .

11. Create Separate Profiles

Do you use Safari for both personal and professional tasks? If so, you can create separate profiles, each with its own unique bookmarks, extensions, tab groups, and other content. For this endeavor, you’ll need iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 or higher on your device. To get started, go to Settings > Safari and tap New Profile .

Tap the Name field and give your profile a name, such as Work or Business. Select an icon for this profile. Under Settings, the option for Favorites will use the name you gave to this profile. Tap Done . By default, another profile is created for you named Personal. Tap each of the two profiles to review the settings and change any you wish.

To switch between your profiles in Safari, tap the Tabs icon and then tap the Profile icon at the bottom. Tap the Profile option, then select the profile you wish to use.

12. Sync Website Settings Across Devices

You can sync other settings in Safari across different devices under Settings > Safari . Swipe down to the section called Settings for Websites and turn on the switch for Share Across Devices .

13. Browse Privately

If you don’t want Safari to keep track of the sites you visit or the AutoFill information you enter, Private Browsing mode will keep this information hidden (although you won’t be completely anonymous ). With iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 or higher, the feature even locks automatically when you’re not using it to protect your open tabs from other people who may access your device. You can then unlock Safari with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.

To enter Privacy Browsing mode on an iPhone, tap the Tabs icon, swipe the Tabs section to the right, and then tap Private . On an iPad, open the Sidebar and select Private . Now any page you launch opens in Private mode. Exit Private mode by returning to the Tabs screen and selecting your previous tabs or page.

14. Check a Privacy Report

Cross-site trackers monitor your web-based activities as you move from one site to another. If you’re concerned about your online privacy, Safari blocks these trackers by default. You can also see which sites and trackers have been blocked through Apple's Privacy Report . 

Tap the aA icon on an iPhone or iPad and select Privacy Report . The window reveals how many trackers were prevented from profiling you and how many sites contacted such trackers. Under the Websites tab, you can see a breakdown of which websites contacted trackers. Tap Trackers to see what specific trackers were blocked.

15. Translate Websites

Safari is able to translate websites displayed in a foreign language. The feature supports English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, Korean, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Arabic, and Simplified Chinese. 

Open a website in one of these languages. On an iPad, tap the ellipsis icon at the right of the address bar, and select Translator in the menu. On an iPhone, tap the aA icon and select Translate to [your language] . The site will then automatically be translated.

16. Listen to a Webpage Read Aloud

Safari has a built-in text-to-speech feature. Tap the aA icon and select Listen to Page to have the browser read a web page aloud. To stop the reading, tap the aA icon again and select End Listening . With iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, you can also ask Siri for assistant. Just say “Siri, read this,” and the narration will start. To stop, say “Siri, stop reading.”

17. View Compromised or Reused Passwords

If you set up iCloud Keychain to sync your passwords across devices, you can also have Safari warn you if any of them have been compromised in a breach or are reused elsewhere. To set this up, go to Settings > Passwords > Security Recommendations and make sure Detect Compromised Passwords is enabled.

Under the Security Recommendations screen, you can select any password that’s been leaked, reused for multiple websites, or is considered weak. Either delete the password or change it to something more secure.

18. Edit Suggested Website Passwords

If you use iCloud Keychain to manage your website passwords, there’s an option whereby Safari will suggest a strong password to use when you create a new account on a website. Just tap the password field, and a potential password appears. With iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 or higher, you can edit the suggested password as you see fit.

After tapping the password field and seeing the suggested password, tap Other Options below the Use Strong Password button. Select Edit Strong Password to change what Apple offered or generate a password with no special characters or one that’s easier to type.

19. Share Passwords Stored in Safari

With iCloud Keychain managing your passwords in Safari, you can share passwords with family members and other trusted contacts. On your iPhone or iPad, head to Settings > Passwords . Tap the option for Share Passwords with Family or tap the plus icon at the top and select New Shared Group .

Create a name for the shared password group and then add the other people from your contact list. Choose the accounts that contain the passwords you want to share and then send the recipients an invitation to join the group. Upon accepting the invitation, the others can then switch between their own private passwords and the passwords shared through the group.

20. Request Desktop Website

Many websites offer versions for both mobile devices and desktop PCs. By default, you’ll likely see the mobile version when browsing via Safari on your iPhone or iPad. But sometimes that version may not be as full-featured or display as much information as the desktop one. To check out the desktop version, tap the aA icon and tap Request Desktop Website . To go back, tap the aA icon again and select Request Mobile Website .

21. Copy Subject from an Image

With iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, Apple's Live Text feature expanded to let you isolate and extract a foreground subject from an image. That capability extends to the websites you visit with Safari. Find a picture with a subject that you want to copy. Press down on it and select Copy Subject from the menu. Open an app into which you can insert the image, such as Mail or iMessage, and then use the Paste function to add the subject.

22. Watch Picture-in-Picture Videos

Similar to the way many streaming video apps let you watch their videos in a smaller window while you take care of other tasks, Safari fully supports picture-in-picture video. If you’re watching a video on YouTube or Vimeo, select the Picture-in-Picture icon or just drag the window to the bottom. The video shrinks to a smaller window that you can move to any corner of the screen. To see the video in full-screen mode again, tap the small window and select the Picture-in-Picture icon once more.

23. Read Offline 

Want to savor that 5,000-word long-read for a plane ride or lazy day on the lake where cell service is spotty? Save it to read offline . At the page you want to save, tap the Share icon, and then tap Add to Reading List . To access pages in your reading list, online or off, tap the Bookmarks icon, select the Eyeglasses icon, and tap the page you want to read. 

By default, the page disappears from the reading list after you've read it. To see all pages, including ones you've already read, tap Show All at the bottom of the menu. Select Show Unread to go back to a list of only unread items.

24. Use Reader Mode

Reader Mode, as its name indicates, makes a web page easier to read by stripping out distracting elements like ads and excessive formatting. Tap the aA icon and choose Show Reader on an iPhone or tap the ellipsis icon and choose Reader on an iPad. Tap the icon again to change the text size or hide the Reader.

25. View Two Pages Side by Side 

Do more in Safari with the iPad’s multitasking features , which supports viewing two web pages side by side. Open the first page, then tap the ellipsis icon at the very top of the screen to access the multitasking toolbar and select Split View . You can then open a second instance of Safari and navigate to a different site. Reposition the second window so both pages are in Split View and use the vertical bar to change the width of each window.

26. Access Sharing Options 

By tapping the Share icon, you can send a link for the current web page to another app via text message, email, reminder, or apps like Facebook and Twitter. From here, you can even add the page to your home screen or print it. The Share icon will also display an Options link. Tap it to send the page as a PDF, Reader PDF, or Web Archive.

27. Manage Downloads

Safari's download manager lets you more easily manage files you download from the web. Download a file by long-pressing on the item and tapping Download Linked File from the pop-up menu. To view all your downloaded files, tap the down arrow button at the top and then select Downloads . You can also access downloaded files from the Files app by selecting the location for your iPhone or iPad and then navigating to the Downloads folder.

Safari saves files to the Downloads folder on iCloud, but you can change the location. Go to Settings > Safari > Downloads and send them to your iPhone, iPad, or another location. Here, you can also opt to remove downloaded items after one day, after a successful download, or manually.

28. Take a Screenshot of an Entire Web Page 

Older versions of Safari only allowed the screenshot feature on your mobile device to snap an image of the visible portion of a web page, but now you can capture the entire page. Take a screenshot as you normally would, then open the preview thumbnail of the shot. Tap the Full Page tab at the top of the preview to see the entire web page, even if it wasn’t visible in the initial shot.

29. Manage Your Privacy Settings

You’ll find a couple of sections under Safari settings where you can control your privacy options. Head to Settings > Safari and swipe down the screen to the Privacy & Security section. To stay protected, turn on Prevent Cross-Site Tracking , Require Face ID to Unlock Private Browsing , and Fraudulent Website Warning . Tap Hide IP Address and set it to From Trackers .

Next, swipe down to the bottom of the screen and tap Advanced . In the Privacy section, tap Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection and set it to Private Browsing or All Browsing . You can try turning on Block All Cookies but be aware that you’ll likely bump into problems with many websites.

The option for Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement allows advertisers to measure their ads. But whether you switch it on or off, your anonymity is supposed to be maintained. And the option for Check for Apple Pay allows websites to enquire if Apple Pay is enabled on your device, so you may want to leave this off.

30. Manage AutoFill Information

You can set what information is included in the AutoFill feature under Settings > Safari > AutoFill . Set whether your contact info or credit cards will be used. You are also able to change the information stored in the Contacts app and manage your saved cards.
