DETAILED Lombok Itinerary For The BEST Places to Visit in Lombok!

Categories Asia , Indonesia , Itinerary

Lombok Island is much less known and visited than its next-door neighbour of the Island of Bali but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t visit Lombok. In fact, this is the reason why you should visit Lombok and follow this Lombok itinerary!

Lombok feels wild and still untouched by tourism , however, there are still many things to do in Lombok and places to visit in Lombok for tourists.

This, combined with the fact that the roads are good meaning it’s great to explore Lombok by moped, and prices are much cheaper than Bali, makes Lombok the best and most underrated island in Indonesia I think.

To help you see the best of Lombok here is my Lombok blog on the places you should visit in Lombok, whether you’re planning your 1 week Lombok itinerary or 2 week Lombok itinerary!

Best time to visit Lombok

When is the best time to visit Lombok? Well, the first thing to know is that Lombok has 2 seasons.

Wet Season is from November to March and Dry Season is from April to October . You may think that dry season sounds more appealing but this means it is high season in Lombok during these months so it depends what you want when you’re thinking about when to visit Lombok.

Personally, I’d recommend the shoulder months as the best time to visit Lombok , because November, December and April bring less rain and also fewer tourists! I was in Lombok in December and we saw a bit of rain each day but it didn’t rain all day and is avoidable.

Best Places to visit in Lombok

Gili islands.

3 – 7 Days

The Gili Islands of Gili Trawangan , Gili Air and Gili Meno and part of Lombok, not Bali which is often what people think. Therefore the Gili islands have to be included on this Lombok trip itinerary!

On your Gili Islands and Lombok itinerary , I suggest spending at least  3 nights on the Gili Islands , either by spending all nights on one island or 2 nights on Gili T and 1 night on Gili Air for example.

With that being said, it’s also easy to spend 1 week in Gili Trawangan and 1 week in the Gili islands because there are so many things to do, but it is also really chilled so if you have time, plan to spend a good few days here on your itinerary for Lombok.

Getting in the crystal clear water is one of the best things to do in the Gili island s so be sure to go out snorkelling or diving .

Hiring a bike is the best way to see Gili T and you can cycle around the island in just a few hours. Be sure to look out for the Instagram famous Gili T Swings .

Come evening, be sure to watch the sunset  on this Gili islands itinerary. The Gili islands are known for their sunsets and then head out for a drink to see some live music on the beac h or get ready for a big night out because the nightlife in Gili T is famous!

How to get to the Gili Islands?

There are a few ways to get to the Gili Islands on this Lombok itinerary, you can come from Bali, Bali Airport, Lombok or Lombok Airport.

Bali to Gili Trawangan

The most popular route that people do is to land in Bali International Airport and then travel to Gili Trawangan.

There is only one port and pier in Bali where the boat from Bali to Gili Islands runs and that’s from Padang Bai in the North.

You can book a minibus and boat package which will pick you up from your Bali Hotel, take you to Padang Bai and then will take you to your boat over to the Gili Islands. The whole journey takes about 5 hours depending on where you’re staying in Bali and they leave 2 or 3 times a day.

Lombok to Gili Trawangan

The Gili Islands are much closer to the island of Lombok than Bali so it is quicker and easier to get to Gili T, Gili Air and Gili Meno from Lombok than Bali.

Where to stay in the Gili Islands?

There is so much accommodation on Gili Trawangan and Gili Air for all budgets, from hostels to high-end beach resorts.

Here is my guide to the best accommodation on the Gili Islands !

Bookig.com is also a great place to look for homestays and private Villas on the Gili Islands.

Lombok itinerary, Gili T 2 Bedroom Pool Villa Airbnb

Senggigi and Klui

2 – 3 Days

After visiting the Gili Islands which are arguably the best place to visit in Lombok on your Lombok itinerary. Head to mainland Lombok .

There are regular boats leaving all 3 Gili islands to Lombok , the best thing to do is to get a local boat to Lombok early in the morning as this is the cheapest option and only takes 20 minutes. The pier in Lombok is called Bangsal Harbour .

From Bangsal, head slightly South staying along the West coast to Klui and/or Senggigi.

Where to stay in Senggigi?

If you want to stay in a really quiet place with a nice, wild beach, perfect for surfing, stay in Klui.  I recommend staying at  Diva Lombok Resort  or Jeeva Klui Resort as the best hotel in Klui.

If you want to stay somewhere with a holidaymaker feel to it with more hotels, restaurants and bars, but still with a nice beach, stay in Senggigi .

Lombok itinerary, Jeeva Klui Resort by Klui Beach

Things to do in Senggigi

If you want a surf lesson on this Lombok itinerary, go see my friends at Lombok Wave Surf Shack  in Klui for a lesson and a sunset chill, these are the best things to do in Klui and best things to do in Senggigi.

Related Post: Here’s my full blog post on things to do in Senggigi !

Lombok itinerary, Klui Beach and Surf Shack

Most people think that the Gili islands are just Gili T, Gili Air and Gili Meno, but this is incorrect, there are lots more Gili islands, they just aren’t as popular.

From Senggigi, on this Lombok itinerary you can take a day trip to the really unknown Gili Islands of Gili Nanggu, Gili Kedis and Gili Sudak.

Gili Nanggu is known as a Paradise Island and the snorkelling is fantastic, this 7 hour day tour will pick you up in Senggigi and take you to white sand beaches, bays and crystal clear water:

Benang Stokel & Benang Kelambu Waterfalls

For a day trip in Lombok on your Lombok itinerary, head to  Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls . These are located close to Mount Rinjani and you have to travel through the lush green-ness of Central Lombok to see them including lots of rice terraces in Lombok. They will only take up half a day as the walk around these Lombok Waterfalls is not too long or too intense.

Benang Stokel & Benang Kelambu Waterfalls | Lombok itinerary

Mount Rinjani

If you’re up for a challenge on your Lombok itinerary and want to go hiking in Lombok, Mount Rinjani is the answer! Mount Rinjani is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and it is an active volcano. You have to hike up Mt Rinjani with a guide and it takes 2 nights and 3 days so be sure to plan this into your Lombok itinerary as you can’t do it in any less time.

It is a strenuous hike, but totally worth it! Here’s a look at a tour of Mount Rinjani that you can do:

If you don’t want to hike, going to Northern Lombok and staying in the area of Mount Rinjani is still a nice thing to do. Rinjani Lodge is a beautiful hotel with views over Mount Rinjani and they can help you with day tours to see the local area. Check out rates and availability for Rinjani Lodge here!

Kuta Lombok

2 – 5 Days

Kuta is the main backpacker hub on mainland Lombok so it when planning your backpacking Lombok itinerary, you should plan to spend a few days here! And if you backpacking Lombok, Pipes Hostel is a really great hostel in Kuta Lombok!

GETTING FROM BALI TO THE GILI ISLANDS

There is only one way to get from Bali to the Gili Islands and that’s my fast boat from Padang Bay.

You can wait until you arrive to book your boat or be organised and book it in advance here. Booking in advance is especially good during the summer and Christmas months!

BUY HERE: From Bali: 1-Way Boat Transfer to Gili Trawangan/Gili Air/Lombok

BUY HERE: From all Gili Islands: 1-Way Boat Transfer to Bali

How to get to Kuta Lombok?

Due to Kuta being the main hub, there are lots of taxis and buses available to take you there. If you have just hiked Mount Rinjani, your guide or hotel will be able to help you get to Kuta afterwards.

If you decide to visit Kuta first in Lombok, it is just a 30-minute journey from Lombok Praya International Airport to Kuta town.

Things to do in Kuta Lombok

If you are confident in riding a moped , this is by far the best way to get around Lombok and see all of the places near Kuta Lombok.

Surfing is one of the top things to do in Lombok and South Lombok is no different, you can go surfing on Kuta Beach which is close to the town.

These days there alongside the local warung restaurants in Kuta, there are lots of nice cafes and restaurants in Kuta serving Bali style Smoothie Bowls and avocado on toast so be sure to spend some time eating in the many cafes in Kuta Lombok.

Lombok itinerary, Cafes in Kuta Lombok

The best Kuta tourist attractions are the beaches near Kuta Lombok .

For a unique surfing experience on your Lombok itinerary, head to Gerupuk where you take a boat out into the ocean and surf in the middle of the sea , it’s such a cool experience and tourist attraction in Lombok. When you arrive in Gerupuk you’ll see lots of shops offering lessons. This is the only place you can do this in Indonesia!

Tanjung Aan Beach

Tanjung Aan Beach is a beautiful white sand beach and is just 20 minutes from Kuta town. There are some swings on the beach which make for great photos and plenty of sunbeds to sunbathe on. This beach is a must-visit on your Lombok itinerary!

From Tanjung Aan Beach you can see smaller beach coves to the right and you can actually walk up the hill and down to them if you fancy adventuring to a private beach!

Make sure you also stick around for sunset and head up Merese Hill for sunset.

Lombok itinerary, white sand in Tanjung Aan Beach

Selong Belank Beach

1 – 2 Days

For another beautiful quiet beach to visit on your Lombok itinerary , drive from Kuta to Selong Belank. The drive takes about 40 minutes and it is a beautiful drive, especially on a moped!

Selong Belank Beach is a white sand beach, also with plenty of sunbeds but what I love most about this beach is only part of the beach has restaurants a long it and you can easily walk to the end and be totally on your own.

Surfing in Selong Belank Beach is the most popular things to do in Selong Belank because the waves are good and there is no coral in the ocean meaning it’s super soft when you fall off! Go and see my friends at Aqia Surf Shop in Selong Belank Beach for a lesson with a great surf teacher!

Lombok itinerary, Selong Belank Beach

Be sure to stay on Selong Belank until sunset because not only is the sunset amazing, just before sunset, you’ll see some farmers taking their water buffalo along the beach which is a pretty iconic scene and Selong Belank Beach is only 1 of 2 beaches you can see the water buffalo at sunset in Lombok .

Lombok itinerary, water buffalo on Selong Belank Beach

When you are finally ready to leave Lombok whether thats after 5 days in Lombok, 1 week in Lombok, 10 days in Lombok or 2 weeks in Lombok, you can easily fly out of Lombok .

Lombok Praya International Airport is just 30 minutes away from Kuta in Lombok and you can book a transfer car to the airport here or once you are in Kuta. Lombok Airport and it is well connected to cities in Australia and South East Asia so I would recommend looking at flights on Skyscanner from here.

If there are no flights from Lombok to where you want to go, you can get cheap, internal flights from Lombok to Bali or elsewhere in Indonesia and fly elsewhere from there.

I hope you found this Lombok itinerary and the best places to visit in Lombok helpful!

If you want to take a wonderful tour of Lombok , of course your adventure begins with booking a ticket! There are no direct flights to Lombok in the Netherlands. Often the most economical route is to fly via Kuala Lumpur. From Kuala Lumpur, you can then book a direct flight via AirAsia to Praya, Lombok’s airport. An alternative route is via Jakarta, but direct tickets to Jakarta tend to be pricier.

Another option is to fly to Bali, Denpasar. From Bali, you can then take a flight to Lombok or take the boat. Many choose to spend a few days in Bali and then travel on to Lombok.

From Bali, there are three ways to travel to Lombok:

  • Plane: This is the most expensive option, but the fastest if you want to visit both Bali and Lombok.
  • Fast boat: Ideal if you are staying in the Nusa or Gili Islands.
  • Ferry: The most budget-friendly option if you want to go from Bali to Lombok, and also our personal favorite.

How many days do you need to explore Lombok? Of course, that depends on your travel style and what all you want to see on this island. We recommend at least 2 weeks to discover the most beautiful places of Lombok. Within 1 week you can also get a great first impression, but if you want to dive even deeper into Lombok, feel free to take more time.

route lombok

On Lombok, the three most popular destinations are the Gili’s, Kuta Lombok & Tetebatu. The famed Gili Islands, often mentioned in the same breath as Bali, are perfect for total relaxation or celebration. Kuta Lombok serves as the perfect base to explore the south of the island, while Tetebatu, also known as the green heart of Lombok, is an absolute highlight. These places are among the absolute must-visits of Lombok.

Depending on how many days you have for Lombok, you may be able to supplement your itinerary with additional days in the north, such as Senaru, where you can admire the impressive Tiu Kelep waterfalls. The undiscovered east also offers options, such as the tiny island of Gili Kondo or the surfing mecca of Ekas.

Take a quick look at our Lombok itineraries for 1 week, 2 weeks or 3 weeks.

Lombok’s most beautiful destinations

Curious about all the beauty you can discover on your Lombok itinerary? We have already worked out the best spots of Lombok for you.

Kuta Lombok

Kuta is the place to explore southern Lombok. Here you will find trendy hotspots but also enjoy a serving of nasi at the local warung. Although the main street is full of Western eateries, you only need to drive 5 minutes to experience authentic Lombok. What makes Kuta Lombok extra special is the opportunity to discover a new beach or place every day, including Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak and The secret Gili’s .

Selong Belanak

Just add Selong Belanak to your Lombok itinerary soon, because once here, you’ll never want to leave! Just a few years back, Selong Belanak was a quaint beach with a few simple beach bars and perfect waves for beginning surfers. Today, the first hostels, homestays, villas and beautiful boutique hotels have moved in here, allowing you to spend a few days dreaming away in this piece of paradise.

route lombok

Gili Asahan

A pearl of peace and serenity, Gili Asahan is one of the lesser-known Gili islands near Lombok. This small island, away from the crowds, offers an oasis of silence and natural beauty. You will find a few homestays and luxury resorts.

Located on the west coast of Lombok, Senggigi is best known for its beaches and luxury resorts found on the coast. If you want to completely unwind for a few days, this is the place to be.

Gili Air, Trawangan or Gili Meno

The Gili Islands are all about a different pace. Here you don’t hear cars roaring or mopeds honking. Everything is done on foot or by bicycle. Think white sandy beaches that invite lounging, turtles swimming curiously by, colorful coral welcoming you and trendy spots you discover along the coastline. It is an escape from the hustle and bustle of Bali, a place where you can completely unwind.

route lombok

Located in the lush greenery of northern Lombok, Senaru is a cozy village where many people depart from to climb one of Indonesia’s largest volcanoes, the Rinjani volcano.

But besides the Rinjani, you will also find beautiful rice fields and giant waterfalls, including the famous Tiu Kelep waterfall

Sembalun, like Tetebatu and Senaru, is the base for people who want to climb the Rinjani. Once visited primarily for this reason, it has now become a destination in its own right, thanks to its vast rice terraces and beautiful bites. But there is more than just natural beauty: Sembalun also offers immersion in local Sasak traditions, giving you a profound cultural experience.

Tetebatu , a small village located in the heart of Lombok, is definitely among our most beloved destinations in Indonesia. It forms the beating green heart of this island! This charming village, at the foot of Rinjani volcano, is a prized gem in Indonesia. Whether you climb the volcano and use Tetebatu as a starting point, or simply enjoy a day hike, this place offers it all.

tetebatu rice fields

East Lombok: Ekas or Gili Kondo

Eastern Lombok is still relatively undiscovered, even though this part is really beautiful. To begin with, in the southeast you will find the surf beach Ekas and Pink Beach. Traveling further north, you’ll find tiny Gili Kondo. A bounty island with pearly white beaches and crystal clear waters.

In fact, on Lombok it is almost a must to rent a scooter. After all, you won’t find cheap Gojeks on this island, nor is Grab available here. Fortunately, the roads here are of good quality and you can already rent a scooter for less than 4 euros per day. Moreover, it is a great way to explore Lombok.

If you really want to fully enjoy this island, throw a small backpack on your back and take a road trip around the island on your own scooter. Within a few days you can drive around the entire island. This is the perfect way to discover more of Lombok. You glide through cozy local villages, are often invited by locals for a Lombok Kopi, and discover the most breathtaking viewpoints and landscapes.

backpack lombok

Would you like to combine Lombok with another Indonesian island? Flores is a wonderful addition. Although there are no direct flights from Lombok to Flores, there are alternative ways to get there. For example, you can take the boat to Bali and then fly to Flores from there. It also includes a boat trip from Lombok to Flores.

Flores is truly a fantastic island, with the famous Komodo National Park as the absolute highlight. Here you can admire the unique Komodo dragon, an experience you won’t soon forget. This part of Indonesia is also known for its beautiful beaches, idyllic islands and some of the world’s best dive sites.

But Flores has much more to offer. Consider the unique Kelimutu volcano and enchanting Bajawa. The island is infused with natural beauty and rich culture, making it a unique addition to your journey through Indonesia.

Lombok rice fields

For a diverse Indonesian experience, combining Lombok with Bali is a great choice. These two islands are very close to each other and each offers a unique character.

Starting in bustling Bali, you can enjoy the vibrant culture, beautiful temples, lively beaches and vibrant nightlife. Then you can experience the peace and charm of Lombok, with its relaxed atmosphere, pristine nature and breathtaking beaches.

18 Things to do in Lombok, Indonesia (The Ultimate Lombok Guide)

Lombok is often an island that is overlooked and skipped in many people’s Indonesian itineraries. This island is Bali’s bigger neighbour that is more mountainous, less crowded and is still a surfers paradise. Think lush green jungle, towering waterfalls, epic viewpoints over rice fields and almost deserted beaches and you have Lombok.

Sounds dreamy doesn’t it? If you’re the type of person who likes to get more off of the beaten track then skip some of the attractions in Bali and make your way to Lombok island or even further to Flores . Though the island isn’t totally off the beaten path, far fewer travellers come to Lombok than Bali and it is home to the famous Gili Islands.

I’ll be honest, Lombok was my least favourite island in Indonesia mainly because it cost more to get around and I didn’t find the locals as friendly as other Indonesia islands but this was my personal experience and I’m sharing details below so you’ll be prepared price wise. Many people rave about Lombok, especially if they’re surfers.

Believe me, I think the island is well worth visiting if you love natural landscapes, trekking, waterfalls and beaches! But you’ll have to travel Lombok and find out for yourself.

All prices are in Indonesian rupiah. See up to date conversions with  XE Currency .

How to Get to Lombok

You have a few options when getting to Lombok.

How to get to Lombok from Bali: From Bali you have the choice of flying or by boat. A flight is half an hour and you will land in Lombok’s only airport in Kuta which is in the south.

Or you can choose to travel by boat. The public ferries depart from Padang Bai Harbour in Bali and arrive in Lembar Harbour in Lombok (near Senggigi). The journey takes 4-5 hours, ferries leave every hour and tickets can only be bought at the harbour for 46,000 per person (prices change frequently though).

Lastly, you have the option to take a fast boat which takes about 2 hours. Fast boats in Bali don’t always have the best reputation so make sure you do your research before booking. Prices range from $35+ USD.

How to get to Lombok from Gili Islands:  You have two choices to get to the Lombok Bangsal Harbour from all of the Gili Islands. Public boats are available that cost less than 20,000 and differ depending on which island you’re travelling from. The furthest away is Gili T and takes 40 minutes. The downside is that you have to wait until the boat is full to leave.

The second option is to take a fast boat which are more expensive (around 80,000). Tickets are be purchased at one of the many tourist shops on any island.

How to Get Around Lombok

Getting around Lombok is just like Bali, there is no public transport but there are multiple places to visit in Lombok. There is no GoJek in Lombok like there is in Bali for cheap rides. Instead in Lombok you will have to hire private drivers to get around between destinations which is costly. I paid 500,000 to get from Sembalun in the north to Kuta in the south which was about a 2.5 hour drive. From places such as Kuta and Senggigi you will have options to get shared buses at stalls lining the main streets and Rinjani tours usually include transfers from Kuta or the harbour.

To get to waterfalls and beaches you will have to hire private cars or drive yourself as day trips. So make some friends and split the cost of a car if you can!

There is the option to rent a bike for Lombok travel but be prepared for long drives or places not wanting to let you rent bikes for long drives. You can however rent a bike in Bali and then head over to Lombok on the public ferry (the only way to bring a bike over) and then scoot around.

Lombok Itinerary

Your Lombok itinerary can differ depending on what you’re after on this island but I recommend to spend at least a week on Lombok and its neighbouring Gili Islands but 10 days would be ideal. These itineraries break down where to go in Lombok and for how long but of course it all depends on how much time you want to chill.

Lombok 7 Day Itinerary

  • Gili Islands: Days 1-2
  • Mount Rinjani: Days 3-5
  • Kuta: Days 6-7

Lombok 10 Day Itinerary

  • Gili Islands: Days 1-3
  • Mount Rinjani: Days 4-6
  • Kuta: Days 7-10

Things to do in Lombok

To make things simple I’ve broken down the island into areas to help you plan how much time you want to spend in each area. Keep reading to find out what to do in Lombok for each region.

Things to do in North Lombok (Senaru and Sembulan)

Senaru and Sembulan are both mountain towns at the base of Rinjani. Senaru is the most popular of the two and where most people start their trek up Rinjani, however many tours will also pick up people staying in Sembulan or start the trek from Sembulan which is actually closer to Rinjani.

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities | Mount Rinjani

Trek Rinjani

Trekking Rinjani is no easy task and is not for beginner trekkers. Trips up Rinjani can be done is 2-3 days and include trekking for 7-8 hours a day on sometimes lose rock and step points. You start the trek with a 1500m over 8km. I’m not trying to discourage you from trekking Rinjani but just making you aware! I personally skipped it because I didn’t feel that I was fit enough (read: not fit at all) so I chose to do a soft trek, Perigasingan Hill.

Two-day treks will take you to the summit or the crater rim and include a guide and a porter. Three-day treks will take you to the summit, a lake and the hot springs on Rinjani.

Sendang Gile Waterfall

Waterfalls are some of the best Lombok attractions. This towering waterfall is certainly a site and will give you some great Instagram pictures. It is extremely easy to get to from Senaru and it’s right in the main town. Locals will be happy to point you in the right direction.

Locals will be waiting for you to enter and will offer you services as a guide for 150,000 or more. You do not need a guide as there is an obvious path to Sendang Gile. The entrance fee is 10,000 and it covers the cost for both Sengang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls.

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Tiu Kelep Waterfall

When you visit Lombok you’re going to want to see this waterfall. Tiu Kelep waterfall is a jaw-dropping waterfall that is a moderately easy walk to get to as it is quite accessible. Tiu Kelep is the second of two waterfalls, the first being Sendang Gile waterfall. But Tiu Kelep is even more impressive. There is a second path at the bottom of the stairs. When heading back towards the stairs take the path on the left and you’ll be led to Tiu Kelep.

Kids are hanging around and will offer to be your guides, they ask for about 20,000. Most speak good English and they’ll help you take pictures and walk through the areas when you’ll need to go through water. The water is not deep (below the knees) so getting through is no problem.

For both of these waterfalls avoid going on the weekend, especially Sunday if you can because this is when they are the busiest.

Tiu Teja Waterfall

I personally didn’t visit this waterfall but it is also in the north of Lombok and can be visited on your way to or from Senaru or from Senggigi (which is about 1 hour away). It’s located in the middle of the jungle close to Santong village. You can find more info on how to get there in this article .

Since I skipped trekking Rinjani I still wanted to do something active so I opted for this soft trek that takes you up Perigasingan Hill (I call it a mountain) in Sembalun. The trek takes 2-3 hours up and down and is ideal for sunrise so you can see Rinjani as the sun comes up. This hill is where porters train for Rinjani. It can also be done as an overnight trip so you don’t have to trek up in the dark.

I wouldn’t call this trek easy though as at some points it is a 70° climb and there is lose rock, but it is totally doable. I am totally out of shape and managed!

Unfortunately, even though it’s a short trek it is not cheap. I booked through my accommodation in Senaru which included lunch and a transfer from Senaru for 800,000. This was the cheapest price I had found and it was a private tour!

Bukit Selong Rice Field Viewpoint

This rice field viewpoint has got to be one of the best I’ve ever seen and is worth checking out on your Lombok trip. The viewpoint is located in Sembalun and can be visited on your way down to Kuta from Senaru. In the distance you can see Perigasingan Hill but if you do the Perigasingan trek you will get views of the same rice fields.

There is a 10,000 rupiah fee and it’s a short 10-minute hike up.

Take a right at the top of the stairs to get to the point with the star. Just behind the star there is a small bridge that is falling apart but gives you views over all of Sembalun.

Things to do in Central Lombok

There is not much to do in central Lombok other than some waterfalls so I don’t recommend staying here but visiting the waterfalls instead as part of your trip down from Senaru or Sembulan or as a day trip from Kuta.

Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls

In central Lombok, Air Berik, is where these two waterfalls are located. There are actually 5 waterfalls but these two are the most impressive (so I’ve been told since I didn’t get to see the others!).

Bengang Stokel is the first waterfall and is down the path to the left just through the entrance. It’s about a 5-minute walk on a path and then you’ll come to this double waterfall that has a perfect area to take pictures without even going into the water.

My personal favourite was Bengan Kelambu waterfall as it was like something from out of a fairytale where the water flowed down in light streams from the lush greenery. It is about a 15-20 minute walk from Benang Stokel and there is a path with stairs up on the right when you start heading back towards the path you came in on.

When you get to the waterfalls locals will usher you into the office where they will then try and charge you 150,000 for a guide or 60,000 to see each waterfall. I haggled and myself and my friend got in without a guide for 50,000 each. Though you may want a guide since I had no idea how to find the other 3 (less impressive) waterfalls were.

These waterfalls are about a 2 hour drive from Kuta so they can be done as a day trip easily. Do not use Google Maps as your navigator (unless you enjoy driving through farmers paths that are just rocks). The correct location for these waterfalls is on Maps.me, an app where you can download an offline map to help you get there.

Things to do in Kuta Lombok

Kuta is where all of the surfers head to catch some epic waves without any crowds. But it’s also a beach lovers paradise and the perfect place to just chill out. Kuta is also where the island’s airport is so Kuta should be your starting or finishing point.

Merges Hill (Sunset Point)

Locals and tourists alike gather on Merges Hill to watch sunset over the hills. It’s the best place to watch sunset in Kuta and can be hiked up in less than 10 minutes. It’s also right beside Tanjung Aan beach so both of these can be done on the same day as it’s a 20-minute drive outside the main town.

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Tanjung Aan Beach

This was my personal favourite beach in Kuta because of the calm waters that are a stunning blue shade and because it is more developed. Bamboo lounge chairs dot the shores and there are a number of simple restaurants set up so you can enjoy a cool coconut and some lunch without having to leave the beach.

Because it is more developed there are people and kids trying to sell you sarongs, pineapples and bracelets so be prepared to have them asking you more consistently than is necessary.

The drive to the beach is about 20-minutes from the main town on mostly good roads. The last two roads have plenty of potholes but can still be driven on.

Batu  Puyung Rock Formation

This is an umbrella-shaped rock that is close to Tanjung Aan beach. You can get to this rock for a photo op by boat from the beach or by walking. It will take about an hour to walk over some rocks and rock pools and you may be the only one walking over.

Kuta Beach Lombok is the main beach and is the closest to town. It has nice sand and the waves are small so it’s okay for swimming. There are some food stalls here where you can get drinks and some light snacks. Most locals hangout here and it is the busiest beach in Kuta, though it is never packed like the beaches in Bali. Parking is 10,000.

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Mawun Beach

Mawun beach is a 20-minute drive from the main town but will bring you over hills and past some spots where you’ll want to pull over and take some scenic pictures. It’s a quiet beach and has bamboo lounge chairs and restaurants lining the beach. Swimming is possible but the waves are bigger.

At the moment the driving is not great as there is a lot of construction so the road is covered in gravel and dirt but the roads are improving quickly and it is a paved road already. Parking is 10,000.

Pink beach is about an hour drive away from Kuta and has a few water activities but is generally a quiter area. The beach itself is not very pink but has a definite pink hue to it. You can snorkel here, dive or go island hopping. The water is also crystal clear and is perfect for a swim. There is also a hill on the side and its a great lookout over the beach.

Kuta, Lombok is known as one of  the  surfing destinations in Indonesia. It is not spoiled by a ton of tourists yet like Bali and it is an actual surfers paradise where you can ride waves without all of the crowds.

I won’t pretend that I know how to surf or know the best spots so I recommend further research!

Kuta is turning into a mini Canggu with restaurants and yoga studios already established. So between your beach or surf sessions why not zen out at one of the two studios currently in Kuta. Yoga classes are available for walk-ins with package deals for 3 classes at both Mana Retreat & Yoga and Ashtari Lombok .

I went to 3 classes at Mana and loved the classes and instructors. The property is absolutely gorgeous and the accommodation looked amazing. Ashtari has multiple locations for classes and I saw one of the locations on top of a hill and it has awesome views!

Sunset at Ashtari

Ashtari is also a restaurant. It’s perched on top of a hill so you can get good views even if you don’t do a yoga class here. The prices are typical of a western restaurant in Indonesia and is a good spot for sunset (though not as good as Merek Hill). Either way, the food is delicious!

Eat at El Bazar

I don’t usually include where to eat in my guides as things to do but this place was so Insta-worthy that I had to include it. To sit in the best spot of the restaurant, the back terrace, head over during the day as the terrace closes for dinner. Just look at how cute the picture is above! It is pricer but not ridiculous and the food is extra yummy.

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Lombok, Indonesia

Selamat Pagi, Kuta Lombok

Raw natural magnetism, historic sites and amazing beaches: Lombok is ready to steal the spotlight as Indonesia’s next island darling.

Previously recognised simply as Bali’s sister island, Lombok is now a full-grown destination with its own set of discernable charms. Each year, more people are skipping Bali for Lombok’s pristine, unspoiled nature. Some say Lombok’s exotic beaches remind them of what Bali looked like decades ago – and that doesn’t include the island’s hidden, untouched spots still waiting to be discovered. Make sure you read Culture Trip’s ultimate travel guide to Lombok before you book your flights.

An introduction to Lombok

Lombok is sandwiched between the world-famous island of Bali and the remote, uncharted Sumbawa Island of West Nusa Tenggara. Despite rising popularity and growing development, there is still much to discover in this island beyond the now mainstream spots.

Unlike the Hindu-majority Bali, the residents of Lombok are predominantly Muslim. That religious background impacts the island’s landmarks and culture, making Lombok more than just ‘another Bali’. Before the independence of Indonesia, Lombok was mainly ruled by chiefs of the indigenous Sasak tribe, which still dominates the local population at about 85%.

Many local people in Lombok make concentrated efforts to uphold their traditions, with strong adherence to cultural rituals. Other communities practice a unique, fascinating mix of Islam and animistic beliefs.

Stick fight between villagers, Lombok, Indonesia

How to get there

Most Lombok travellers hail from Bali, which welcomes more international flights than virtually anywhere else in the country. From there, you can either board a connecting flight to Lombok International Airport (starting from $25 USD in low season) or head to Padangbai port for a cheaper public ferry (less than $4 USD per person any time). It takes about 30 minutes to reach Kuta beach in Lombok from the airport and one hour to Senggigi beach. Meanwhile, the Lembar port in Lombok is approximately an hour away from both points.

Getting around

Public transportation only operates in bigger towns in Lombok, like Mataram. Beyond that, renting a car or motorbike is pretty much your only option, especially if your itinerary involves exploring.

An intricate scheme of switching buses and minivans may get you from the airport to the island’s main destinations and ports, but it’s not the most time-effective method of getting around. Also, some of the transportation is sparsely run, operating only at certain times that make them unreliable. Check with your accommodation to see if they can arrange airport transfers, which will make everything a whole lot easier. While visiting the island, either rent your own vehicle or sign up for organised tours.

The less-crowded Lombok

What to pack

Expect tropical weather at most times – even in monsoon season Lombok has less chance of rain than Bali. That means light breathable clothes, sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, or anything else that will protect you from the sun’s glare. Swimwear and flip-flops for the beach but maxi-coverage clothes for the towns, as Lombok is a Muslim-majority region.

A sarong can be used in more ways than one, so buying one at a local market is always a good investment. You can use the sarong for sunbathing and to cover up when needed, and it makes an excellent souvenir too.

Romance in Lombok

Always have a decent amount of cash with you. Credit cards will only go as far as the most modern establishments, and trust us when we say you’ll want to try that satay from the street food stall.

Take care of your own personal necessities, such as medicines and tampons. Once you venture off outside the main towns, it will be much harder to find these items.

Lombok has a wide diversity of landscapes. It has some of the most exotic beaches, picturesque hills, and Mount Rinjani – Indonesia’s second-highest volcano. Make sure you plan ahead in order to pack accordingly. If you’re up for hiking to the top of Rinjani, prepare your gear and logistics for a three to four day hike.

Segara Anak Lake on Mount Rinjani

Where to go

Kuta Mandalika

Not to be confused with the excessively crowded Kuta in Bali, this area on the southern coast of Lombok is an idyllic getaway with beautiful views and peaceful atmosphere. The place has become significantly more crowded in recent years, with new hotels and establishments built along the shoreline. Recent developments bring you a great selection of modern accommodations and restaurants, without forgoing the laid-back island vibe (just yet).

Kuta also serves as an ideal hub for some beach-hopping along the southern coast, which is home to some of the most scenic beaches on the island. Tanjung Aan and Batu Payung beaches are both less than 30 minutes away from Kuta.

Kuta Mandalika, Lombok, Indonesia

Senggigi is not like the rest of the island. As Lombok’s earliest tourist hub, this area is relatively well-developed compared to the rest of the island, dotted with great hotels and bars packed with mostly foreign tourists. It’s not hard for European travellers to get a familiar, authentic dinner in one of the restaurants. The coastal area is also home to some beautiful beaches to kick back and watch the sunset.

Staying in Senggigi, Lombok

The second-highest volcano in Indonesia is certainly a daunting one to conquer , but the journey rewards you generously. The view along the hike is unparalleled and the mountaintop Segara Anak lake alone is worth the three days toil. If you’d rather save that kind of adventure for another day, the national park area just at the base of the mountain has beautifully picturesque hills and majestic waterfalls that make for an excellent day trip.

Hiking Mount Rinjani

Gili Islands

The three sister islands just off the coast of Lombok are probably much more popular than the mainland. For decades, the Gili Islands have become a renowned destination for partying, diving, and everything you could want from an island getaway. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air are accessible via fast boat from Teluk Kodek or public traditional boat from Bangsal.

The renowned ‘turtle capital of the world’ offers a myriad of things to see and do, and there’s something for everyone. Daredevils can try extreme watersports at Gili Air , while zen-seekers may opt for a serene morning doing aqua yoga. Enjoy beach side healthy bowls in the morning and party hard at night – a day in Gili Islands is more eventful than most.

Gili Meno, Lombok, Indonesia

Mataram is the capital city of West Nusa Tenggara and probably the single most lively urban area in Lombok. This is where you’ll find shopping malls, modern restaurants, and majestic houses of worships – including the glorious Pura Meru. Mataram has been a centre of civilisation since ancient empires ruled the land, leaving traces of history in the forms of buildings, landmarks and other historic sites.

Let’s take a look at what you can expect from Lombok all year round.

Of course, you’re going to be looking for the best place to stay in Lombok, but everyone’s needs are a little different.

Looking to find the perfect place to hustle, work, rest and play? Welcome to Tribal Hostel, the world’s best co-working hostel… Bali’s first custom-designed, purpose-built digital nomad friendly hostel is now open! Plus: epic food, legendary coffee and awesome cocktails! What are you waiting for? Check it out…

Now that you know where you’re going to stay, you need to figure out how to get to Lombok. When you’re there, you’ll want to know how you’re going to get around.

The most popular way to get to Lombok is by public ferry from Bali. We highly recommend this as it’s an activity all on its own!

When it comes to getting around Lombok, we recommend traveling by ojek , these motorbike taxis are cheap and are perfect for individual travelers. If you’re traveling with a group, hiring motorbikes is not a bad idea either, especially if you’re going to be doing a lot of traveling around the island.

Lombok itinerary

Buses are generally the easiest and cheapest way to get from the airport to your hotel, and they have plenty of space for your luggage.

Taking a bemo is another great way to travel. These are vans with an open back and bench seats along either side. This is how locals travel and is a lot cheaper than many other forms of transport.

You can also hire a car, or just hire a driver, but of course, these are a lot more expensive and in many cases, unnecessary.

Now that you have a better idea of how you’re going to get around the island, you can start looking for the best things to do in Lombok. Let us be your Lombok guide and show you all the activities you simply must add to your Lombok trip itinerary.

Tanjung Aan | Kuta Lombok | Semeti Beach | Selong Belanak Beach

If you’re only spending one day in Lombok, then you need to cram that day full of the very best activities the island has to offer. You’ll spend your first day basking in the sun and exploring many of the best beaches in Lombok. Here are a few activities you should be adding to your Lombok itinerary!

Day 1 / Stop 1 – Stroll Along Tanjung Aan

  • Why it’s awesome: Tanjung Aan is one of the longest beaches in Lombok and is eerily similar looking to that of the Caribbean!
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Warung Turtle Resto Cafe is just a few minutes walk from Tanjung Aan beach and serves lovely Indonesian food. This beachside cafe has seating right in the sand, making for the perfect island paradise eating spot! Be sure to try one of their seafood dishes, as they’re truly delicious! Enjoy delectable food, while sipping on a thick creamy milkshake, or an ice cold beer. There is no better way to spend the late morning!

While zooming around Kuta on your scooter, be sure to stop at its most popular beach! It stretches for kilometers along the coastline and you might not see another soul! Because Lombok is less crowded than most popular destinations in Bali , you’ll find it a lot more empty, giving you the space to roam freely!

Tanjung Aan, Lombok

Gorgeous turquoise waters will stretch out in front of you, providing you with magnificent views! While strolling the beach, be sure to dip your toes in the deliciously warm waters!

After walking the entire length of the beach, be sure to climb one of the hills on either side. When you get to the top, you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular views of the bay! Be sure to take your camera along for this activity, as you’ll want to capture the beauty of this area and remember it forever!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – Explore Kuta Lombok

  • Why it’s awesome: Kuta Lombok is a much smaller, and less popular version of the Kuta in Bali.
  • Food nearby: Tomato Cafe is a quaint breakfast joint in the heart of Kuta Lombok. You’ll find tasty Asian cuisine and plenty of vegan and vegetarian options! If you can stomach pizza in the morning, we can highly recommend their breakfast pizza. However, if you’re not up for something so cheesy in the early hours, there are a great deal of other healthier breakfast options.

Kuta is a small village in Lombok with so many hidden gems in its grasp. The best way to explore this wonderful area is to hire a scooter for the day. You can zoom along the coastal road, stopping off at a myriad of different roadside stalls along the way.

Riding a scooter can be a great and inexpensive way of traveling around Lombok. Although you don’t need a license to rent a scooter, most travel insurance companies will ask for a valid motorbike license to be able to claim if you crash! Always make sure that you have travel insurance with a motorcycle-riding coverage.

The area is known for its gorgeous beaches and luscious vegetation, so if you’re a nature lover, you’ll adore this activity!

I have stayed a MANY of the best villas in Kuta Lombok during my multiple visits. My favorites always show off the traditional hospitality of the locals. Villas have high-end service, combining comfort and convenience, along with a promise of fun activities and entertainment. I highly recommend them.

Kuta Lombok

Stop off at various spots that interest you and explore a little further on foot. Top hostels in Lombok have staff with the best recommendations.

Chat with the locals; this is often the best way to get to know an area! Don’t forget to ask for advice about where you can find the most interesting and rare things to do in Lombok.

Insider Tip: Be careful when driving your scooter along the roads. It’s a quiet area, so you won’t encounter traffic, but going slowly is still a safer option, as some of the roads are not of great quality.

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Explore Semeti Beach

  • Why it’s awesome: This beach is a little different from the other ones you’ll find around Lombok.
  • Food nearby: Nulle Part Ailleurs is a wonderful restaurant with an island feel. The food is absolutely delicious and the seafood is fresh! Try their incredible chicken teriyaki or their deliciously cheesy pizzas! Neither the food nor the view could disappoint! They also serve great takeaway meals if you’re ready to get back to your hotel.

Semeti Beach is completely different to the other beaches in Lombok! Instead of white sandy beaches, it has interesting volcanic rock formations that form small rock pools and blowholes.

As you can imagine, the experience you have on this beach is far different from the others. Instead of basking in the sun, you can spend your time exploring the craggy rocks and perhaps taking a dip in one of the many rock pools!

Semeti Beach, Lombok

If you like hopping, climbing, and exploring, this is a great excursion for you! You’ll also get the chance to see a different side to Lombok marine life in the rock pools.

Despite the dramatic scenery, this beach is often not visited by tourists to Lombok. So you’ll find it very quiet, which gives you the perfect chance to explore and investigate as you please!

Day 1 /Stop 4 – Sunbathe at Selong Belanak Beach

  • Why it’s awesome: Selong Belanak Beach is located in South Lombok and never gets overcrowded!
  • Food nearby: Mawi Surf Cafe is one of the many street stalls you’ll find along the road. They serve delicious street food at a great price, and also offer surfboard rental . Be sure to try one of their fresh coconuts, and sip it from the comfort of the sandy beach!

Spend the afternoon basking in the sun at this delightful beach! It’s definitely one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, making it a must-visit during your stay in Lombok.

Many of the beaches in Bali (the neighboring island) are crowded, and there is plenty of litter lying around. You won’t find this to be your experience at Selong Belanak Beach! This beach is a long strip of clean and wonderfully golden sand, perfect for a sunbathing excursion.

Selong Belanak Beach

You’ll also find stalls on the side of the road, just off the beach. Here you can enjoy lovely street food, mainly noodle and rice dishes, as well as deliciously fresh coconuts!

You can rent a surfboard or a sponge board at Selong Belanak, however, the waves aren’t great for experienced surfers. The waves are perfect for beginners, giving them a gentle nudge in the right direction. If you happen to be an experienced surfer, it’s best to save that watersport for another beach.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

Senggigi | Sukarara Village | Beleq Village | Tanjung Poki

If you’re spending 2 days in Lombok, then you’re going to need a few extra activities to add to your 2-day itinerary in Lombok. On your second day, you’ll be spending time exploring the local villages and getting to know the culture and traditions of the Sasak people . Here are a few extra activities you won’t want to miss out on!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Sunbathe on Senggigi

  • Why it’s awesome: This part of Lombok, reminds us of a much more peaceful time, before all the tourists came to town.
  • Food nearby: Basilico Authentic Italian Restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy an indulgent mid-morning brunch. They offer an all-inclusive buffet option, or you can order something special off the menu. If you like to dine with an incredible view, this is the perfect place for you.

Of course, basking in the sun is something you should experience every day during your time in Lombok. After all, you are on holiday, it’s your duty to return home with a tan that’ll make the closest of friends jealous!

At Senggigi, you can relax and enjoy the beach that wraps around the coastline! It’s not commercial at all, so you won’t find amenities or street side stalls, but you can enjoy your own company on this gorgeous beach.

Sunbathe on Senggigi, Lombok

The beach gives way to luscious vegetation and palm trees that sway in the wind. We couldn’t think of a better way to spend the last of the morning!

Be sure to take your camera with you , as you’ll struggle to find a more picturesque view if you tried! Turquoise waters and a white sandy beach that gives way to luscious vegetation and a craggy mountain slope!

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Pay a Visit to Sukarara Village

  • Why it’s awesome: The village lies in a completely overlooked portion of the island and holds hidden secrets many tourists will never find out!
  • Food nearby: Keker Restaurant is a colorful beach boma, that serves absolutely delicious Indonesian cuisine. The quality of every dish is incredible, so you won’t want to miss out on this delight for the taste buds. If you’re a fan of fresh seafood, this is a must-visit during your time in Lombok! The food portions are large, the service is great, and the prices are cheap! The view is also spectacular, there are not many places in the world that you can sit in the jungle eating fresh seafood, it really is a treat!

Many tourists don’t know that Lombok has a thriving textile industry, and Sukarara Village is at the forefront of this industry. In many of the touristy areas you won’t even see a glimpse of this industry, so coming to Sukarara allows you to see Lombok authentically!

They make two main types of woven cloth, Tenun Ikat which is made mainly by the men, and Tenun Songket , which is made by the women. Tenun Songket is inlaid with golden and silver threads. These beautiful pieces of cloth are made by hand and should be absolutely treasured!

Pay a Visit to Sukarara Village, Lombok

Be sure to buy one while you’re in Sukarara, or take a traditional weaving workshop, where you’ll learn exactly how the garments are made.

After taking a class, you’ll realize just how difficult this skill is to learn, and appreciate their work so much more!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Visit Beleq Village

  • Why it’s awesome: If you’re wanting to learn about traditional Sasak culture, you must add this activity to your Lombok itinerary.
  • Food nearby: Pondok Guru Bakti Senaru Cottage and Restaurant is a beautiful restaurant that also offers accommodation. Both are incredible, but if you’re coming for a bite to eat, you’re in for a genuine treat! They have wonderful outdoor seating that provides you with an amazing view of the jungle, and they serve great Indonesian food! Your palate will be nothing less than satisfied by the time you leave!

Beleq is one of Lombok’s many indigenous villages and dates all the way back to the 14th-century. The village has a rich cultural history, as well as plenty of Sasak houses and a village hall. The area is fascinating to explore and makes for a great excursion.

You’ll learn so much on your trip to Beleq Village! You’ll see the ancient traditions of the Sasak people and learn about their history.

Beleq Village, Lombok

The village hasn’t changed much over the years, so it still holds its authentic Sasak ways. There are plenty of tours you can take of the village if you want to learn a bit more, or you can speak to a local. Many of them speak English and would be more than happy to educate you about their way of life.

Visiting Beleq Village is a truly authentic experience that leaves you humbled and in awe. Be sure not to miss out on this truly unique experience!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – See Tanjung Poki

  • Why it’s awesome: Seeing this incredible sight is such a humbling experience! The perfect way to end off your second day in Lombok.
  • Food nearby: Lesehan Terapung Sadewa is a very unique restaurant in the ocean. Yes, I said it, in the ocean. It’s a floating seafood restaurant that is absolutely spectacular. The view could not get better and to be quite honest, neither could the seafood. This is by far the best seafood restaurant in Lombok, and that’s really saying something! For your second night in Lombok, you really need to celebrate by spending the evening at this fantastic restaurant!

The beautiful scenery is not all that Tanjung Poki has to offer. Due to a volcano eruption many years ago, incredible rock formations have formed in this area.

The rough sea has now eroded areas of the rocks away, creating giant blowholes and incredible caves as well as rock pools.

To see how the water interacts with the interesting rock formations is so interesting. You could watch the water for hours! Be sure to take your camera along for this trip, as you’ll want to record the dramatic eruptions of water that take place due to the blowholes in the rocks.

Insider Tip: The best time to visit Tanjung Poki is when it’s high tide. The waves crash against the rocks and water erupts out of the blowhole with brute force! It’s a spectacular sight.

You’ll also take part in a boat ride across the river, to explore an ancient Hindu Temple, before cycling back to your pick-up spot to head home.

Lombok is relatively safe, however, there are a few dangers you should watch out for during your 2 days in Lombok.

It is advised not to buy alcohol on the island. In Indonesia, alcohol is often diluted with methanol and can be very dangerous! There have been a few deaths caused by this dilution over the past few years! If you want to drink, make sure you buy a sealed bottle and open it yourself. Buying drinks and cocktails at bars in excess is not advised!

There are very strong currents that run between the islands, making it very dangerous to try and swim from one island to another. Although the shallow turquoise waters may be tempting, it is better to stay close to the beach than get washed away!

Drugs are very freely available on the island, due to the lack of police. However, there are VERY strict drug laws in Indonesia, and if you’re found with drugs, you may face the death penalty.

Be aware that petty crime does take place on Lombok island, so keep your belongings safe by making sure your hotel room is locked and the windows shut. It’s also a good idea to carry your most valuable belongings on your person, where you can see or feel them at all times.

Indonesia is a very large country with a very wide territory with thousands of islands on both sides of the equator. Although often classed as part of Southeast Asia, many of the islands are far from the main backpacker routes in Southeast Asia and much of Indonesia is closer to Australia than Thailand, Cambodia or Laos. If you all want to travel to Indonesia, we also have very exciting tourist information, you can see it via the website which we will share here abkhaziya . net

When i was in parts of bali and particularly over toward lombok in gili trawangan, gili air and gili meno, i was constantly woken really early in the morning by the external speakers blasting the prayer. this seemed odd to me given prayer is normally a quiet personal matter. i used to look for concrete buildings distant from noisy places to stay in rather than thatched huts as they are more sound proof and more likely to have air conditioning. i would suggest a rating on each accommodation place indicating how close it is to ferry terminals, nightclubs, temples and main roads for those of us who are light sleepers. recent oppressive laws passed by the blinkered and foolish government of indo (given 80% of their income comes from tourism) do not favour tourism, rather they favour opportunities to extort bribes for not enforcing these ridiculous laws. One can rate the corruption of a police force anywhere by the ratio of how much time they spend looking for or investigating crime and dealing properly with it vs how much time they spend extorting bribes for not doing so. I have lived in places where the latter is all they ever do and they have zero interest in the former! new laws: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-12-06/indonesia-bans-cohabitation-between-unmarried-couples/101739410 i recommend avoiding all the muslim areas of indonesia for both these reasons unless you can get well away from busy areas with temples and police. .

  • Things To Do In Lombok; The Perfect Lombok Itinerary (3-5 Days)

UPDATED MAY 2022: Lombok is an island paradise right next door to Bali. Unlike a Bali itinerary though, Lombok is much more serene and far less developed. It has picturesque, unspoiled beaches and awe-inspiring, towering mountains. Up until recently, Lombok wasn’t really on the travel radar with Bali still the place to go for some travel fun.

Now, more people, and especially the more adventurous type of traveller are contemplating Lombok as an alternative. For many, it will remind them of how Bali was before developers had a greater influence. And with so many things to do in Lombok, at a fraction of the Bali prices, it’s the next big thing in Indonesia!

The highlight of all the things to see and do in Lombok for me? Trekking Mount Rinjani , Lombok’s active volcano and highest peak. All 3,726 metre (12,224ft) of it. It’s breathtaking.

TOP-TIP: Book a full one-day tour and do all the best stuff in Lombok. You can do that with these guys HERE .

  • Day 5:

Final Tips For Things to do in Lombok

"Things

Before I tell you about the perfect Lombok itinerary, and all the things to do in Lombok, let me first give you some facts about Lombok that will give you an understanding of what to expect once you are there.

Lombok is roughly the same size as Bali, about 70 kilometres (43 miles) across with a total area of about 4,514 square kilometres (1,743 square miles). The capital and largest city on Lombok is Mataram, home to a population of around 420,000 (but it’s really nothign special, I avoid it when I’m in Lombok). The money used on Lombok is the Indonesian Rupiah. If you are looking to change dollars, Euros or GBP for Rupiah, there are plenty of exchange shops around the Senggigi tourist resort area. The exchange rates offered in Lombok are actually quite competitive.

Contrasting with Bali, where the majority of the population are Hindu’s, here in Lombok, they are Muslim and have a strong adherence to cultural rituals. Although, Alcohol still flows pretty freely (thankfully!). Generally speaking, most people on Lombok either speak or understand the national language of Bahasa Indonesia, but English is also widely spoken.

Lombok has a year-round warm and humid tropical climate. Temperatures range from 21 Celsius to 32 Celsius.

Like most tropical locations, Lombok has a wet season that runs from November to March, so if possible avoid that. If you’re in Indonesia during the wet season though, I’d still come to Lombok, no big deal. Unlike Bali, Lombok seems to dodge the major storms and only gets sporadic showers. If you plan on hiking Mount Rinjani, the suggested ideal time period to do so is between the middle of June and October. You can read about my friends and I trekking Mount Rinjani, and how you can do it too, here .

trekking Mount Rinjani

How to get to Lombok?

You have two choices, by boat from Bali, or by plane.

The easiest way to get to Lombok is to fly from Bali (for as little as $10 or so!). Most people fly from Bali to Lombok, but you can also fly straight to Lombok from Tokyo and Singapore.

Bali to Lombok Ferry : You can catch the public ferry across the Lombok Strait from Padang Bai Ferry Terminal in East Bali to Lembar Ferry Terminal in Lombok. Ferries leave every hour, 24 hours a day. The journey is 4 hours or so. Price wise, though, you can’t beat it, with a one-way fare available for around $4 dollars. The fast baot from Pedang Pai to Sengiggi (Lombok) costs $20, and takes 30 minutes. Once a day at 9am.

Bali to Lombok boat

Think of Lombok like you would the Caribbean, so pack for summer (with a chance of tropical rain!). Light cotton clothes and sandals are perfect for Lombok, as are clothes that dry quickly after a shower, especially if you’re visiting in the rainy season. As Lombok is not as commercialized as other islands, you likely won’t find what you’re used to back home here in most shops. Therefore you may want to bring your own specific toiletries.

""</p

If you’re heading to Lombok as a traveller, or a surfer, you will want to stay in the backpacker area of Kuta (not to be confused with Bali’s crazy, party area in Kuta) or in Senggigi, another traveler hotspot . Lombok’s Kuta is only 30 minutes from Lombok airport and has some of the most spectacular beaches that you will find here.

If you want to get out and explore, your best option is to rent a car or scooter. Public transport and buses are pretty rare in Lombok. You can either base yourself in Kuta and book each tour you want, they’ll include pick-up and drop-off normally. Or as I mention, get yourself a scooter and be free!

lombok trip canvas

Do I need a visa to visit Lombok?

Yes, you need a visa for Indonesia. But most 99% of tourists get a visa-on-arrival so you don’t have to do anything, just arrive in the airport. Pay $35 when you first arrive in Indonesia at your place of entry. The visa is valid for 30 days for tourism, family visitation, and other purposes.

The locals adore that you try to communicate in their mother tongue!

  • Selamat Pagi: Good morning
  • Apa Kabar?: How are you? – Kabar Baik: I’m good
  • Selamat Siang: Good afternoon
  • Terima Kasih: Thank you
  • Selamat sore: Good evening
  • Sama Sama: You are welcome
  • Selamat Malam: Good night
  • Yes/No: Ia/ Tidak

""</p

Before we go into the specific Lombok Itinerary, let me list all the things to see and do in Lombok that you can tick off, one by one, when you arrive in paradise!

Multi-day trip to the Gili Islands (Gilli Trawangan is the party one)

Trekking mount rinjani, bicycle tour , beach hop (don’t miss mawun beach  & selong belanak), surfing lessons, tiu kelep watefall (the best one), sindang gila waterfall, betara lenjang waterfall, benang stokel & kelambu waterfalls.

If you do your waterfall hunting, a spot of cycling, a couple of surfing lessons, and a day or two on the beaches, followed by trekking Mount Rinjani, that means you probably need at least a week in Lombok to soak it up. This place is slow paced, so no need to rush. You could easily spend more time here and not be rushing around. That being said, if you only have 5 days in Lombok, here’s how I would form my Lombok Itinerary.

"Things

LOMBOK ITINERARY

When you arrive in Lombok from Bali, take a taxi to the surfing Mecca of Kuta. (Not to be confused with Kuta on Bali as this place is much more laid-back.) At the airport, there is a desk where you can buy a voucher for the taxi ride to Kuta, or you can go outside and arrange it yourself among the keen local taxi drivers. I paid just 70,000IDR, about $5.00 to get from Lombok Airport to Kuta and the ride only took me about 25 minutes.

Sleep in Kuta.

When you wake up in Kuta, whether you intend to surf or not, you’ll notice straight away that Kuta is on the map for its very attractive beaches. The beach boys there can sort out surf lessons, and surfboard rental for $10 or so. So settle in. The waves in Kuta are great for beginners, so enjoy.

Surfing in Lombok

Your body might be aching from the surf lessons, or maybe it’s the Bintangs from the evening? Anyway, I decided to head on up to Lombok’s main tourist area of Senggigi. It’s a great hop-off point for half-day excursions, or you can wile away the day at both Senggigi Beach and Kerangdangan beach.

Here you will find plenty of western style restaurants and places selling fresh food for lunch. In the island’s native Sasak language, Lombok translated means chilli. When you sample some of the local cuisine made with mouthwatering fresh ingredients you will find out why; you’ll usually be offered something called sambal. This is a rich, spicy sauce made from local chilli peppers grown in the countryside of Lombok.

Sleep in Senggigi.

Lombok Itinerary

If you don’t have time to visit the Gili ISlands for 3 or 4 nights after Lombok, then try to squeeze in a snorkel trip to them on one of your Lombok Itinerary days. Although I really recommend you go and spend a couple of nights on Gili T at least. The most beautiflu water in all of Indonesia. The Gili Islands are a group of three small islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air located just off the northwest coast of Lombok. Famous for their unspoiled palm-fringed beaches, the Gili’s are surrounded by coral reefs just teeming with fluorescent fish and marine life. You can book day-trips snorkelling here from either Sengigi or Kuta.

There aren’t too many places in the world where you can swim with turtles, which for me made the Gili Islands the highlight of my trip.

lombok trip canvas

The village of Senaru is at an altitude of 600 metres, so it’s a little cooler than down on the coast and has some excellent walks that include a couple of amazing waterfalls. While it is possible to visit the waterfalls on your own, I found it easier to hire a guide. Firstly, this gave me someone to answer my questions, while at the same time stopping people from asking me if I needed a guide. The scenery around Senaru is spectacular, so you will have no end of ‘national geographic quality’ photographs to share. There are a lot of waterfalls dotted around Lombok, so make sure you find the right guide!

TOP-TOP: Book a waterfall tour to ensure you don’t miss out the most epic waterfalls ($50 from Sengigi)!

Day 5:

Now it’s up to you how hardcore you are! I recommend booking a Mount Rinjani trek from here. But if not, then go and chill on the Gili Islands, head back to Kuta or stya in Senggigi and mingle with the other travels. Lombok is nothing but chill vibes, so try to schedule some time to do nothing!

TOP-TIP: If you don’t want to hike ALL the way to the top, you can hike to the Volcano crater rim. 2D/1N. That’s what me and my friends did. It was SPECTACULAR!

Sleep on Mount Rinjani!

Mount RInjani crater rim

  • Try to base yourself in both Senggig and Kuta. It makes the drives on your day-trips less time-consuming.
  • Try to factor in time to visit the Gili Islands after your Lombok adventure, they’re gorgeous
  • Don’t expect beach clubs, and banging night clubs like Bali. Lombok is much quieter.
  • Learn to ride a scooter, Lombok is the perfect place to get your head around driving on tropical islands!

25 Best Things to Do in Lombok (Indonesia)

Many people who come to Indonesia looking for a beach holiday choose to visit Bali . The island of Lombok however is only a ferry ride away, and if you want to get away from the crowds and go somewhere a little less commercialized then Lombok is a great place to start.

Some of the highlights of this island include it stunning white sand beaches as well as clean seas and some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities to be had in Indonesia. It is also the home of the famous Mount Rinjani, so if you like trekking then a trip up to the summit of this active volcano is not to be missed. You will also find a slower pace of life here as well as a more relaxed setting, and if you want something different that is still easy to reach from Bali, then Lombok is the perfect choice.

Here are the best things to do in Lombok :

1. Party on Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan, Nightlife

Gili Trawangan is known for being the biggest of the three main Gili islands and is also the most developed.

That said, don’t expect it to be anything like Bali.

There are no roads here and the only way to get around is to take an old fashioned horse and cart or you can walk or cycle around.

Despite the relative lack of development however Gili Trawangan has a jumping nightlife scene and is known for being dotted with beach bars where you can keep partying long into the night.

You can also expect to find a wide range of venues that play live music on a nightly basis as well as some clubs with dance floors.

During the day you can also enjoy the rest of what Gili Trawangan has to offer in the form of pristine white beaches and clear waters that are perfect for snorkeling or diving.

2. Trek to Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Tiu Kelep

Lombok is known for its pretty waterfalls but one of the most famous of these is Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

This gushing cataract can be found in the north of the island and it is surrounded by gorgeous emerald jungle.

The waterfall is located in Senaru Village and the trek out to the waterfall takes around 45 minutes to an hour depending on how fast you walk.

The route will take you past trickling jungle streams and you can check out the local flora and fauna in the forest as you trek to the waterfall.

The falls plunge down over 45 meters and you can expect to feel the cooling mist off the water as you take in the scenery.

You can also swim in the pool at the base of the cataract which can be a welcome break after a hot trek through the forest.

  • 3.  Relax on Gili Air

Gili Air

Gili Air is the second largest of the three main Gili Islands and is a good choice if you want something a little more serene than neighboring Gili Trawangan.

It is also one of the best places to come if you want to try some diving in Indonesia as the visibility is excellent.

You will find a range of spots off shore including pretty coral gardens that are the grazing sites of graceful turtles and elegant rays.

4. Enjoy Air Kalak Hot Springs

Rinjani Hot Spring

If you decide to trek up Mount Rinjani, the main mountain on Lombok, then make sure you stop off at Air Kalak Hot Springs which are around 200 meters away from the main campsite.

It is nestled close to the stunning Lake Segara Anak and there is no better way to celebrate after scaling Mount Rinjani than to soak away any aches and pains in the hot springs.

The waters here are said to have medicinal properties due to the high volcanic mineral content so if you want a soothing end to a hike then this is the perfect place to come.

5. Snorkel on Gili Meno

Gili Meno

Gili Meno is the smallest Gili Island and is well loved by families looking for a relaxing beach setting.

It is also popular with couples and if you want to spend some serene time on the sand then this is the place for you.

You will find some small strips of beach here and this is a top spot if you want to try snorkeling in Lombok.

Marine life abounds in these waters and you can go snorkeling with a good chance of seeing marine life like turtles and other sea creatures.

6. Visit a Pearl Farm

Autore Pearl Farm

People may not realize that Lombok is famous for its pearl farms, and this is big business in the area, with some of the prettiest pearls in Southeast Asia cultivated here.

One place where you can see the pearls is the Autore Pearl Farm and there is a tour which is perfect for tourists that will fill you in on everything you want to know about pearl cultivation.

There is also a showroom where you can buy some pearl products and support the local pearl farming business in Lombok.

7. Explore Kuta Lombok

Sunset In Kuta, Lombok

Kuta in Lombok is not to be confused with the more famous Kuta in Bali.

Unlike its famous sister, Kuta in Lombok is smaller and quieter and is basically a town with some pretty beaches close by.

The best way to explore Kuta is to hire a motorbike or a bike and driver and then make you way along the coast, stopping at any inlets or coves that take your fancy.

You are sure to find something that catches your eye and can spend the day sunbathing on the sands and sipping from fresh coconuts bought from a roadside stall.

8. Check out the views from Bukit Pergasingan

Seeing Rinjani Mountain From Pergasingan Hill

If you don’t want to hike all the way up Mount Rinjani then consider a trek to Bukit Pergasingan which is a hill that sits at around 1,700 meters above sea level.

The hill and lookout point is located in Simbalun Village and the big draw here is the surrounding scenery.

From Bukit Pergasingan you can look out onto the patchwork of fields below that come in a range of different hues and are one of the prettiest sights in Lombok.

9. Sunbathe on Selong Belanak Beach

Selong Belanak Beach

Selong Belanak Beach is located in South Lombok and is one of the prettiest beaches on the island.

Compared to the beaches in Bali, many of which can be crowded and littered, Selong Belanak Beach unwinds along a scenic bay and is made up of a long strip of clean golden sand.

You will also find a few local stalls that back on to the beach and you can get simple noodle and rice dishes here as well as a fresh coconut.

It is also possible to rent a surfboard or a sponge board here although the waves are not as consistent as they are in Bali so hardcore surf aficionados may be better off choosing another spot.

10. Climb Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani

Mighty Mount Rinjani is probably Lombok’s most famous attraction and for many visitors this is the main reason to come here.

Mount Rinjani is not just a mountain but actually a still-active volcano, as well as being the second largest volcano in Indonesia.

One of the big draws here is a trek to the crater at the summit where you can also take in an azure lake and some amazing views over wider Lombok.

There are a variety of different treks that you can choose, most of which last several days, and if you want to take it a little easier it is best to opt for one of the longer treks which will allow you to take your time.

Many visitors to Lombok say that a hike to the top of Mount Rinjani is one of the best experiences to be had in Indonesia, but note that the trek to the crater is strenuous and you will need to be in reasonably good shape if you plan to attempt it.

11. Explore Narmada Water Park

Narmada Park

Narmada Water Park is actually something of a misnomer as this is not an amusement park but actually more of a water palace.

The park was built in 1727 under the sage guidance of King Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Karang Asem and is seen as an important religious and spiritual retreat by those who follow the Hindu faith.

Make sure to check out the amazing architecture here as the park is built to mirror the shape of Mount Rinjani which is the highest peak on Lombok and also considered to be a sacred mountain.

The park is surrounded by lush gardens which are perfect for an afternoon stroll as there are natural springs here that give the park its water element.

Narmada Water Park is not as grand as some of the more famous water parks in Bali but it is well worth a visit if you want to check out some ancient architecture in Lombok.

12. Tour the Sekotong Islands

Sekotong Islands

Lombok is an island in its own right but it is also surrounded by a myriad of other smaller islands which offer you the chance to check out a tropical paradise that feels miles away from the more crowded islands in and around Bali.

The Sekotong Island chain is a collection of small islands that can be visited on a day tour from the main island of Lombok, and they are not yet as well known as the neighboring Gili Islands, so this is a good pick if you want to get away from the crowds.

The islands are covered in white sandy beaches and have pretty outlying coral reefs, so if you like snorkeling then this is an excellent choice and you can enjoy a wealth of underwater flora and fauna.

13. Sunbathe in Senggigi

Senggigi Beach

Parts of Lombok are reminiscent of how Bali would have looked 20 years ago before the onslaught of tourists and one of these areas is Senggigi which is one of the main tourist parts on the island.

Despite being looked on as a central hub however, you won’t find a huge range of amenities, and this is more like a quiet enclave where you can relax and enjoy the beach that wraps around the coastline.

There are a range of restaurants and cafes here where you can grab a bite to eat and a drink as well as some hotels and resorts, but there is still a chilled out atmosphere here that lets you enjoy the beauty of the island.

14. Visit Tetebatu Village

Tetebatu Village

Tetebatu Village is similar in some ways to Ubud in neighboring Bali.

If you are looking for something a little different in Lombok and want to get off the beach, then Tetebatu Village makes a nice change of pace and this part of the island is set amongst gleaming emerald green rice paddies and forests that stretch far into the distance.

The village is a great place to learn more about the culture of the indigenous people of Lombok, called the Sasak, and you can also find out about traditional handicraft techniques in the area and pick up some souvenirs at the same time.

15. Go snorkeling at Pink Beach

Pink Beach Lombok

Pink Beach is the nickname for Tangsi Beach, and it is rather an ambitious one at that.

It is said to be called ‘Pink Beach’ thanks to its pink sand, although you have to look pretty hard to see any glints of a pink hue here.

Instead the beach is more of a strawberry-blonde shade, but it is still a nice spot to visit if you want to sunbathe on the sand or go for a swim.

One of the big draws at Pink Beach is the coral reefs that lie off shore, so if you like snorkeling you can get out into the water and take in all the colorful marine life that swims in these waters.

Other activities at the beach include canoeing around the sheltered bay which is perfect for anyone looking for a little more adventure.

16. Explore Gili Layar

Gili Layar

The Gili Islands off the coast of Lombok are getting more and more famous as a holiday destination in Indonesia, but these usually only include Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air.

Most of the time however people don’t visit, or even know about, Gili Layar which is also sometimes referred to by its nickname ‘The Secret Gili’. The island sits in the sea to the west of the three main Gili Islands and has a relaxed and laid back atmosphere that is ideal if you want to get off the grid and beat the crowds.

Locals will also tell you that some of the best snorkeling in Lombok is found off the coast of Gili Layar, so if you enjoy underwater scenery then this is a great place to find it.

17. Visit Semeti Beach

Semeti Beach

One of Lombok’s other famous beaches is Semeti Beach which is famous for is stunning volcanic formations.

The beach is covered in volcanic rocks which over time have been carved up by the waves making a series of small pools, bays, and inlets, as well as some pretty blow holes.

Despite its dramatic scenery, Semeti Beach is often not visited by travelers to Lombok, so this is one of the quieter and more secluded beaches which is a great place to explore if you like rock pools and climbing.

You can also go swimming here and admire the scenery from the vantage point of the water.

18. Trek to Benang Kelambu Waterfall

Benang Kelambu Waterfall

Benang Kelambu Waterfall stands at over 20 meters high and the water gushes over a tumbling cliff before crashing into a pool below.

The waterfall is also covered with gorgeous green plants and the scenery here is breathtaking, and you can get to the waterfall from neighboring Mataram, the capital city of Lombok which is around an hour away by car.

You can swim in the pool at the base of the waterfall and also get behind the curtain of water which leads to some great photo opportunities.

If you have had enough of checking out Lombok’s many beaches then this can offer a nice change of scenery.

19. Visit Sukarare Village

Sukarare Village

Many visitors to Lombok may not realize that this island has a thriving textile industry.

Many textiles made in Lombok are woven by hand and these include tenun ikat which is a kind of woven cloth made by men and tenun songket which is made by women and is usually inlaid with gold and silver thread.

One of the best places to check out Lombok’s weaving industry is at Sukarare Village which is located in the south of the island and you can join a traditional weaving workshop here and learn exactly how traditional pieces are made.

Needless to say you can also pick up a few pieces which make great souvenirs.

20. Go for a hike in Tanjung Ringgit

Tanjung Ringgit

If you like hiking then make sure not to leave Tanjung Ringgit off the itinerary, as this is one of the best trekking spots on the island.

Located in the south of Lombok, Tanjung Ringgit is covered in lush fields and you can enjoy views that stretch all the way across the sea.

Of course you can also see Mount Rinjani towering in the background and as you trek along the coastline you may even be lucky enough to spot a turtle or two bobbing in the water.

As you make your way along the cliffs here, also make sure to look out for the abandoned gun emplacements and bunkers that date from the time of the Second World War and would have been built here by the Japanese.

21. Trek to Mangku Sakti Waterfall

Mangku Sakti Waterfall

Mangku Sakti Waterfall is one of the most impressive in Lombok and is actually a number of cataracts that join together to pour down into a scenic gorge.

The trek out to the waterfall is an experience in itself as you will have to walk along a series of small and winding pathways through the forest, but the scenery more than makes up for the hike.

One thing to note however is that unlike many of the other waterfalls in Lombok you will need to exercise caution if you want to swim in the pools here, as the water is fast moving, particularly when it is the rainy season.

22. Tour Beleq Village

Beleq

Anyone who wants to learn more about traditional Sasak culture should take a trip to Beleq Village which is one of Lombok’s many indigenous local villages.

Beleq Village actually dates from the 14th century which means that it has a fascinating history, and you will find a range of traditional Sasak houses as well as a village hall and some typical Lombok-style gazebos called berugak.

One of the most interesting things about the village is that it hasn’t changed much over the years, although it is still a tourist village aimed at educating visitors about the traditional Sasak way of life.

23. Marvel at the waves at Tanjung Poki

Tanjung Poki

Tanjung Poki is known for its gorgeous scenery and this is also where you will find one of the most amazing natural phenomena in Lombok.

The area is made up of rock formations and craggy scenery and the rocks have been carved away by the ocean leaving several large blow holes in place.

When the tide is high the water rushes in and creates huge eruptions of water through the holes, and while you should be careful not to get too close, this is also not to be missed as one of the most impressive natural spectacles in Indonesia.

24. Visit Gunung Tunak National Park

Gunung Tunak

Gunng Tunak National Park is a great place to come in Lombok if you want to get some fantastic views of the local scenery and take in the beauty of the island.

The park has a number of trails including a three kilometer trek that will take you along the coastline to an old lighthouse that stands on the cliff side.

There is also a famous viewing platform in the park in the Taman Wisata Alam section which looks like a transmission tower, but you can climb the structure and see all the way across Lombok.

25. Camp at Lake Segara Anak

Lake Segara Anak

If you are going to trek up Mount Rinjani then one of the key places to stop along the way is Lake Segara Anak.

The lake is located insie the caledra at the summit of Rinjani and is surrounded by lush vegetation making it an experience not to be missed.

You can camp at the crater lake overnight and take in the beautiful turquoise waters in the day time followed by the spectacular stars over the rim as night falls.
