The Ultimate Guide to Maldives Surf

Maldives surf trips are taking off like it’s nobody’s business. With the same Indian Ocean swells as Bali and Sri Lanka, fine reef breaks fringing the countless isles, and three separate surf zones suited to different levels – it’s easy to see why!

An introduction to surfing in the Maldives

Maldives surf

To surf in the Maldives seems so distant to most of us. It’s like a vacation to the Bahamas; a casual city break to Cannes. Mere mortals with normal bank accounts usually discount idea out of hand. It’s too expensive, right? It’s too exotic?

Well…not really. Changes to the rules around hoteliering in the Maldives back in 2009 allowed locals to open their own guesthouses and allowed travelers to stay on any island in the chain, not just the ones that were privately owned by gazillionaires. That’s worked wonders for surf tourism in the region, helping barrel-hungry board touters reach the best breaks up and down the atolls for less.

That’s one side of the coin. The other is the fact that the surf here is consistently proving it’s up there with the best in the world. You won’t hear any arguments about the swell. The Maldives string through the Indian Ocean to pick up both SE and SW ground pulses just like Indo. When winds are onshore in one region, they’re neatly offshore in another. There’s a nice, long surf season of about six months.

Add to that the fact that crowds in the Maldives are but a fraction of what you get in nearby Sri Lanka, or even across the hard-to-reach Ments. Plus, the vibe is always a version of tropical happy go lucky. Localism incidents are basically unheard of.

Probably the best thing for us is the fact that the Maldives can be roughly split into three individual surf zones. Each of them cranks up the difficulty level a little as you move north to south, which means intermediate improvers have something in this paradise, as do pros, and even relative beginners.

What will I find in this guide to Maldives surf

Where are the maldives.

Come on. You should know this already!

The Maldives sit southwest of Sri Lanka and India, roughly 700 kilometers (430 miles) southwest of the southernmost point of India’s mainland.

The whole country is spread across more than 500 miles of the Indian Ocean (you can see how there’s almost always somewhere with swell, eh?). It goes from Ihavandhippolhu Atoll in the far north to Addu in the far south, which is so far south that it’s actually over the Equator. Yowza.

How to get to the Maldives?

How to get to the Maldives

Yea, it’s not the easiest. Just keep a postcard of the perfect wrapping rights at Inside Mikados at hand to get you through the flight.

Here are the steps…

  • Book a Flight to Male – Male International Airport (MLE), also known as Velana International Airport, is the main international gateway into the Maldives. This airport has connections with major cities across the globe, including London, Dubai, Singapore, Istanbul, and more. Depending on your starting point, the flight duration will vary. From New York, it’s approximately 20 hours including layovers. From London, it’s around 10-12 hours. From Dubai, it’s about 4 hours. And from Singapore, it’s around 4-5 hours. We use Skyscanner to book flights most of the time.
  • Domestic flight or speedboat to your resort/surf camp – Once you arrive in Male, if your resort is on a different island (which is almost always the case), you may need to take a domestic flight to a closer local airport. You can also hitch a speedboat right there if it’s close enough. Lots of surf camps in the country are happy to organize these transfers from Male on your behalf. In fact, it’s often included in the cost of accommodation or a surf camp. That’s great because getting between the nigh-on 1,200 isles isn’t easy at all!

The top surf spots in the Maldives

Maldives surf guide (North Atolls) | Coke's, Chickens, Sultans & Jailbreaks

In a country that covers more 500 miles from tip to tail, encompasses a whopping 90,000 square kilometers of the Indian Ocean, and even straddles the Equator, it can help A LOT to break things down.

Thankfully, that’s made easy in these parts thanks to three clearly distinct surfing zones.

Here’s a brief intro to the lot:

  • The Male Atolls (or Northern Atolls) – The most sheltered of the bunch and certainly the most famous. They do suffer from a slightly trimmed down surf season because some of the S and SW swells get blocked by the Central Atolls. That said, this accessible region remains the home of most Maldives surf camps and surf hotels.
  • The Central Atolls – The biggest group of the bunch, roughly ranging from Fulidhoo in the north to Gan in the south. Good distance from the source of the strong SW swells makes this a mecca for intermediate surfers who like a touch of cruisiness in their waves. Regular days of 4-8 foot with offshores abound in April-September and the islands and surf resorts are a thing of beauty.
  • The Southern Atolls – The last frontier of Maldives surf, the southern Atolls are actually past the Equator. There’s a big uptick in the power and punchiness of peaks here, bringing it more in line with what you get from a dry-season Indo. It’s the top spot for boat charters and expert surfers, but you’ll need to be ready to travel some.

A note on staying and surfing in the Maldives: You’ll notice that several of the spots listed below are exclusive to certain hotels. Love it or hate it, that’s just a reality in the Maldives, where resorts own whole islands, not just plots of land. If you’ve got the cash then it’s a great news. You can basically buy your way into an almost empty lineup that you’ll share with only folks in the same hotel. If not, then there’s still lots to get through on boat trips and surf camps. Either way, we’ve listed the hotel that you need to book to surf the wave in question so you can check it out and check if the travel budget will allow a night or two…

Surf spots in the Male Atolls

The Male Atolls might be the most famous surf zone in the Maldives right now, but they’re really all about one 17-mile stretch of coral islands that get good SE swell coverage. There’s definitely more than that in the region, but it’s this short hit that makes the headlines and hosts all the named breaks and adjunct surf hotels…

North of Lima

This long, fast left breaks over the strait from Thulusdhoo island, on the south side of unpronounceable Viligilimathidhahuraa. It’s great with those SE windswells that generate from the trades that push across the Indian Ocean from Thailand and Sri Lanka way. If they can team up with NW winds then you’ll usually find beautifully tapered shoulders with an inviting power zone for down-the-line surfing. It’s a more complex and challenging wave than lots in the area and is a regular on boat trips out of Male.

Right opposite Chickens on the southern reef point of Thulusdhoo, Cokes is one of the hardest waves in the whole Male Atoll. To us, it handles more like a Bukit left only in reverse. It’s quick, lippy, down-the-line stuff that’s on jagged reef that’s never more than three foot off the fins. Cokes is always better when the swell is SE and upwards of 5 foot. And yes, it’s named for the fizzy drink factory that was once on the island.

Lohis definitely deserves to be considered competition pedigree. It was one of the first waves in the Maldives to host pro showdowns after the atolls here hit the mainstream in the 00s and 10s. Naturally, that makes it hot property for traveling surfers, which is why the local surf resort who have a monopoly on the break – the Adaaran Select Huduran Fushi – has imposed a cap on people allowed out on the peak and now charge a whopping $500/day for a surf pass. Still, if you’re not staying on the island then you won’t surf the wave, so it is what it is.

The wave itself channels a touch of the G-Land. It’s kinda like G-Land on fast forward when it’s 5-foot or more, offering perfect round barrels and a final section that invites good top to bottom surfing.

Ninja’s

Ninja’s sums up the vibe of the Northern Atolls in the sense that it works best on smaller swells with little to no wind. It’s a bowly, bendy wave with a lovely long shoulder that’s asking to be trimmed by something with a bit of extra length. The water’s deeper than at Lohis and others, making it perfect for stepping up to reef breaks for the first time. Very common pitstop on boat tours because there’s no other way to get here really.

Pasta Point/Pasta’s

If you can push $300/night or so then you can hit Pasta Point. The Chaaya Island Dhonveli Resort monopolizes this one and they guarantee that you’ll only ever be out there with 30 other people, never more. The reality is that it’s never the full 30, either.

The money might just be worth it because it buys you access to what we consider to be arguably the very best left in the country. Variable Monsoon winds don’t pose such a problem, since it can deal with NE and SE, which are both offshore at certain sections. Talking of sections, this wave runs the gamut from beautifully deep bowls to fast sections that allow for high airs and big lip turns. It’s super-duper fun. Like we said, perhaps even worth the mega bucks!

Sultans and Honkys

We take these two fantastic breaks together because they each work on either side of Thamburudhoo Island, some 10 miles north of central Male. Each is kinda perfect in its own way. The left is real playground for Goofys who love getting rail in the water. It starts a little fast but quickly broadens out into a pitching shoulder than can go for 300, 350 meters around the reefs to the channel.

Sultans is always more popular, because a) it’s a right and b) it’s a touch more consistent. Some say this is the finest wave in the country. It’s no walk in the park, even on smaller days, because underwater channels and a shallow reef help to plump it up into big marching rights that demand good top to bottom turning. One ride there and you won’t look back, you’ll be hunting Sultans all day long!

Probably the best-known of all the breaks in the Male Atoll, Jailbreaks got its name because it works right out front of the local prison. It’s now the stomping ground of a large local crew, but they’re a welcoming bunch and don’t seem to mind a jot when the regular surf-tour boats pull up with internationals aplenty. We wonder how long that will last?

Anyway, the wave is usually sectioned out into a trio of take-off zones. The first is the quickest and biggest. The second is a nice almondy-barrel on bigger days and a fizzing lip that’s asking to be smacked over and over when it’s small. The last bit is a neat little racetrack from top to bottom and straight into the paddle channel. It’s an all-level break that we love for its ability to get learners onto reef.

Kanduoiygiri

There are some short lefts off the top end of this pint-sized isle but they’re often barely a trickle. Strong E wind swells will get them kicking and it’s a great backup for boat trippers who want to dodge the size elsewhere.

Furanafushi

The island that’s dominated entirely by the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort does offer guests private surf outings. It’s a good option if you’re planning on staying here anyway, but can’t compete with other options (especially not Chaaya Island’s Pasta Point above). The rights are the main break and they do work okay but are a shadow of the glass-clear peelers you’ll find all across the Male Atoll.

Surf spots in the Central Atolls

Maldives barrels

It’s strange to us that the Central Atolls seem to lag behind the Male Atolls and the Southern Atolls on the rep front. They’re not photographed as much. They aren’t lauded over as much.

That’s probably because they’re tucked a bit outside of the main SW swell channel so don’t get action like Bali does. However, if – like anyone we’ve ever spoken to ever – you prefer small-wave surfing, cruisy conditions, and simply having fun (hey – who goes surfing in the Maldives to score XL barrels anyway?) then this is the place to be.

There are some truly epic waves in the mix here, especially in the form of reef rights in the islands of Thaa and Laamu atolls…

Hirilandhoo/Malik’s

Big W swells do swing by this equatorial island chain on occasion. When they do, Malik’s is the place to be, so long as you have E trades to help shape them up. When that happens, you’ll get big, beefy lefts off the reefs here, all within paddle distance of the shore of Hirilandhoo island.

Most surf travelers to the Maldives will never even glimpse Bedhuge. It’s basically out in the middle of nowhere, meaning it’s the preserve of only the most dedicated surf charter boats and boat tourers. Is it worth it? You’ll only find out after making the trip because the wind and the swell do have to match up nicely – you’re essentially after good E-SE windswell and direct W offshores.

Machine, or Machines, is what we’d call the most un-Maldives like break in the whole of the Maldives. It’s got all the moxy of an east-Bukit wet-season curler, breaking over extremely shallow reef shelves to give deep pits that run on for 50-100 meters. The peak is shifty as can be and the current always tries to pull you off the zone, so keep paddling and paddling to catch a wave. This one loves a SE swell with W or NW winds. Almost always has a crowd because it’s a rare true expert wave in the Central Atolls.

Mikados is separated into an inside and outside section. The outside breaks south to north over a reef going right. It’s best with a W-NW wind and good E windswell, when it offers fast, bowly rides that deposit you far from the reef shelf. The better wave is Inside Mikados, which has rare protection from dominant monsoon SW winds and can front up with fantastically glassy right performance waves that even flaunt the occasional almond barrel. No wonder the photographers head here regularly.

Finimas is one of the few performance lefts in the Central Atolls. Any N wind really helps it get the speed gauge up. It hits the reefs just off Funaduu Island across the way from Mikados with steep, hollowish walls that are great fun when they’re on. There’s a mirror right to the left but it’s usually sleepy and fat.

Right at the tip of the reefs that ring Hithadhoo island in the Laamu Atoll further south, Yin Yangs is certainly the choice wave of the whole region. That means it’s always busy, especially now that virtually all the boat charters operating in the region have it as their number one calling card. But it can handle a crowd thanks to inside and outside sections that work on different winds.

The inside has the ability to churn out steady almodish barrels that you can stand up in completely. The outside is a different, much more mellow, thing of beauty, often marching walls of rights into the reef that are great hotdogging waves. They do both work occasionally but the out prefers more N in the wind, while the inside gets glassy on SW offshores.

Surf spots in the Southern Atolls

Southern Atolls

The Southern Atolls are the place to be for experienced surfers wanting to scratch that Maldives notch in their proverbial bedpost.

Another 100 miles or so south of the Southern Atolls, these isles share a latitude south of the Equator with the likes of the Mentawais and Nias. That should tell you something about the consistency and quality of the S-SW swells that punch up from the roaring 40s. When those come, they don’t come so much with epic size as they do with power, and these waves are the only ones around that can snap your boards and bones when they’re feeling moody.

The region is mainly about the larger Huvadhoo Atoll. That’s got the three gnarliest reef breaks in the country. We’ll take a look at those and some others below…

Don’t come here looking for one of those classic wrap-around point breaks that the Maldives loves to show off. Viligili is a bit more of a Sri Lankan reef, only with some added punch and grit. Needs good SE or E swells to get crunching. When that happens and the tide drops, there are wedgy pits to be scored off the cobblestones. Hardly anyone here, ever, because it’s miles and miles from any hotel or town.

The chilled bro of Tigers (see below), Antiques is an often-mushy right that quickly fizzles out as it meets the reef. A good spot to warm up on before you move inside to conquer the lefts that are legendary but also a decent intermediate wave for nailing bottom turns. Local surf camps and boat tours often deposit their learners here before pointing more experienced surfers in the same group across the way to…

Tiger Stripes

Ultra-consistent Tiger Stripes is a swell sucker that picks up marching S groundswells between April and May but can also do its magic on SE wind swells that push through basically any time of the year. It looks a bit more fearsome than it is, often because people rip it to shreds. But they only do that because TS lets em’. The hardest thing to get right is the initial drop, which requires very good nose direction and a fast final paddle. Then, you’ll be gifted two sections, one semi-hollow, the other super playful, all the way into a paddle channel to help you back and do it all again.

Love Charms

Like Tiger Stripes before it, Love Charms is a must-score for goodfies in the Southern Atolls. It can be one wave (on big days when the whole thing connects) or it can be two (when its small and the tide peels back a little off the reef). Both are pretty epic but the first scenario will see 200-meter rides that alternate between barrel sections and down-the-line surfing; enough to get the thighs properly pumping. Really inaccessible. You’ll need to be on a boat charter or get there with your surf camp.

Two Ways is like someone went and plonked a wave pool in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Only you don’t gotta’ plug this one in – it’s in the Indian Ocean, remember! The reef – called Booga – at the south end of a small island creates both lefts and rights on either side. They’re both awesome waves that work in SE and S swell directions with nice N helping them glass out. They’re a bit cruisier than most in the south region, so usually favored by learners.

Five Islands

A cracking right that runs over a shallow portion of reef, this one’s a sectiony yet hollow corker that has some serious quality in direct S swells. The take off is okay-ish, if you can drop fast and keep a high line. From then, it’s proper down-the-line stuff. Everyone has to pump around certain parts to maintain enough speed to connect all the parts to make it worth the effort, but manage that and it’s great fun over 100-150 meters of wave face.

Beacons sucks in those SW groundswells in fine fashion. It’s the first wave on this western edge of the atoll here and it really shows that with its punchy power, which is pretty much unmatched throughout the whole country. Yep, you’re looking at freight-train barrels that froth down the edges of exceptionally shallow reef. It’s like someone’s holding up a mirror to G-Land.

Surf camps in the Maldives

Surf yoga camp in the Maldives

The Maldives is only just starting to emerge as a major surf-camp destination. But it’s PERFECT for it. Lots of the breaks here are located on the edges of distant isles, far from airports and harbors. The best way to surf them is to get there and stay, which is precisely what these packages offer to do.

There’s a growing range on offer, but right now the leaders of the pack area:

  • 5-Day Camp at Surf Yoga Maldives in Thulusdhoo – Right in the thick of the action in the Male Atoll, Surf Yoga Maldives are one of the top-recognized camp within striking distance of the big city and the airport. They’re located just over the way from epic Cokes, a top break of the region, and offer four hours of surfing tuition throughout the stay. There’s free pick up from Thulusdhoo Harbor included, so all you gotta do is transfer there from Male or the airport, which isn’t hard.
  • 8-Day Amazing and Affordable Surf Camp at Bito’s Guest House – The clue’s in the name: This camp costs just $700 per person in a land where that can be the going rate for a single night at a lux hotel. You get a lot of bang for your buck, too. There daily transfers out to the best breaks in the Male Atoll (Jailbreaks is just off the shore) and two meals per day, plus accommodation in a charming beach house with its own terrace and garden.

We’ve also got a separate guide dedicated to Maldives surf camps right here . Check it out…

A note on why we partner with BookSurfCamps.com : Book Surf Camps are probably the biggest online aggregator of surf camps and surf-yoga packages in the world. We sounded out a quite a few potential partners before we affiliated with them. But, in the end, the abundance of choice for beginners, intermediates, and female-only surfing sealed it. We also love the simplicity of their booking system and the trusted brand name, along with the focus on connecting with homegrown local businesses on the ground.

Step-by-step guide to planning your Maldives surf trip right now

Step one: Book flights to the Maldives surf…Lately, we like Omio for searching flights. It’s a nice interface and has lots of airline options. We also use Skyscanner because that sometimes offers deals that even beat going direct to the carrier!

Step two: Book your surf camp Book Surf Camps is the numero uno online booking platform for fully-fledged surf-stay packages on the internet right now. Then there’s Booking.com . That has consistently unbeatable rates for hotels and a nifty map feature that lets you check EXACTLY how close your hotel is to a surf break.

Step three: Get insurance This is kinda’ important. Not just for surf trips but for any trips. SafetyWing is great for nomad travelers. They offer rolling contracts that cover amateur surfing.

Step four (optional): Rent a car If you’re surf camping then you might not need wheels. If you’re not then we’ll just say this: We’ve never been on a surf trip that wasn’t improved by having our own car. Use RentalCars – they’re the best.

Step five: Enjoy!

For paying for stuff when you’re traveling – Get a Wise borderless card/account . They charge NOTHING for POS payments in any country and have some of the best FX rates around in our humble opinion.

When to surf in the Maldives?

Maldives surf seasons

Each region of the Maldives has a slightly different peak surf season. Or, to put it a better way, each region has a surf season that varies in length, with most of hitting their peak around April-July. Generally speaking, the further south you go, the longer season gets, with a prime time of March-October by the time you’ve reached the more exposed Southern Atolls.

Let’s take a closer look at the best times to surf in each region:

  • The Male Atolls – The closeness of the Central Atolls actually means the Male Atolls sit in a bit of a swell shadow, which shortens the peak period to just a few months in what’s widely seen as the Maldive’s top surf zone. That said, there’s decent reliability from SE swells here in the period from April to July, while the tail end of summer and the start of fall also remain very good indeed, with regular NW offshore winds and steady 3-12 foot swell pulses.
  • The Central Atolls – A big gap between these and the more southerly islands of the Maldives helps SW swell and SE swell filter through into the reefs of the Central Atolls. That means you get west-facing breaks alongside east-facing breaks, which adds variety and flexibility with switching winds. The peak season still matches with the strongest SW-SE swell pushes, which is April to August, though things are more consistent overall in these parts.
  • The Southern Atolls – The longest season of all happens in the highly exposed Southern Atolls. Surf charters go on here from around early March to November, which is when winter in the Southern Hemisphere is throwing out those long-period groundswells that power Bali and the like. Those combine with SE swells on certain breaks to give excellent consistency until around November, when the winds and the swell dips cause even the most reliable waves – Tiger Stripes especially, to dip in character.

Maldives Surf & Travel Guide / Plan Your Surf Trip to Paradise

maldives surf

A Maldives surf trip serves up the brilliant combination of amazing user-friendly waves, island paradise perfection, and absolute barefoot luxury. Whether you’re looking to take a group trip with friends or a family-friendly surf vacation , the Maldives is one of the most stunning surf destinations on the planet.

Located in the central Indian Ocean, off the west coast of India, the Maldives are a string of nearly 1,200 coral islands spread across 26 atolls that have come to epitomize the tropical paradise experience. Picture-perfect white sand beaches dotted with palm trees and five-star resorts are the norm in these largely uninhabited atolls accessed through Male (the capital), providing the quintessential beachcomber lifestyle—with every luxury you can dream up, of course.

The waves in the Maldives were discovered in the 1970s by Tony Hussein Hinde, who famously stumbled upon the surf potential there when he was shipwrecked in the Maldives while sailing from Sri Lanka to Reunion Island.

The region’s original surfer and surfing pioneer, Tony established the Maldives surf tourism industry in the area (and by extension the tourism industry in general), which quickly grew as new waves were discovered and the Maldives was put on the map. Today, there are dozens of charter boats and surf resorts catering to thousands of satisfied wave riders each year.

There are three main surf zones in the Maldives—the central atolls, the southern atolls, and the Male atolls. During the northeast monsoon in April and May, the southern atolls (such as Huvadhoo) tend to enjoy the best conditions.

Meanwhile, the central (Laamu) and northern (Male) atolls prefer the southeast monsoon, which typically stretches from May through October. Charter boats tend to base themselves down south during the early season, and then in the central and north atolls during the mid- to late season.

Types of Surf Breaks

Predominantly reef breaks and reef points, although typically not as heavy as the reef breaks in Hawaii, Tahiti, or Indonesia . Light winds and small to moderate swell produce sculpted, rippable walls for the every man surfer, making this a great destination for a family surf trip.

Level of Difficulty

Intermediate. Although surfers will need to be comfortable over reef, the waves tend to be relatively user-friendly, and don’t often get above 8-12 feet on the face. There are also a handful of hollower waves that will appeal to experts, although the majority of pros who visit the Maldives do so to stack high-performance clips. The region also has a large variety of beginner waves for those who are new to the sport.

Surf Seasons & Swell

South swells out of the Indian Ocean are common from March through October. The cleanest conditions typically come early in the season, before the wind picks up, while the largest swells tend to arrive between June and August. September and October enjoy consistent swell with variable winds. Because the Maldives are so much farther north than Indonesia, these swells tend to be smaller than what you would find on Bali or in the Mentawais. However, they also tend to be more organized.

Depending what region and waves you are surfing, you could be alone or with a few dozen other surfers. The more popular breaks tend to get more visits from charter boats, but some land camps have exclusive rights to the breaks out front.

Getting to the Surf

Nearly all of the waves in the Maldives are accessed through resort, surf camps, and liveaboard boat charters. While it is possible to do the Maldives independently, by the time you have traveled all that way, it’s well worth it to book tours with a professional to ensure that you score.

Male Atolls

maldives surf

The original Maldives surf zone, the Male atolls are home to some of the country’s best-known waves:

  • Cokes: A right-hand reef break that handles size and can produce barrels, Cokes is one of the more consequential waves in the area.
  • Chickens: A long left-hand reef point that is best in the head-high+ range, Chickens is located near Thulusdhoo Island, and can sometimes peel for upwards of 500 meters.
  • Jailbreaks: Located adjacent to what used to be the national prison, Jailbreaks is a fast, hollow right-hander that grows down the line.

Central Atolls

maldives surf

The least crowded surf zone in the Maldives, the central atolls feature a number of quality waves, despite having far fewer resorts and charter boats. This is a great area to check out if you prefer to surf alone.

  • Yin Yang: The most consistent spot in the Laamu area, Yin Yang starts off as a mellow wall before growing into a hollow, powerful inside section.
  • Tsunamis: Protected from westerly and northerly winds, Tsunamis is the most consistent east-facing break in the region, and is a good option for days when the monsoon winds aren’t blowing.
  • Mikado: The go-to spot in Thaa, Mikado is a hollow right-hander that picks up a lot of swell, but is somewhat exposed to the wind.

Southern Atolls

surfing maldives

The southern atolls are the last frontier in the Maldives, still being explored, and predominantly visited by surf charter boats. Because they are located farther south than the rest of the country, they tend to pick up more swell, even in the shoulder seasons. However, they can also suffer from wind issues between May and August, when the southeast winds blow the strongest. Fortunately, there are numerous spots facing different directions, so there is almost always somewhere to surf.

  • Beacons: One of the heaviest waves in the Maldives, Beacons is a shallow, hollow, expert-only peak.
  • Tiger Stripes: A user-friendly left-hander, Tiger Stripes is a long, consistent wall that works best in west and northwest winds, and can be surfed at all tides.
  • Voodoos: This long, hollow right-hander handles southwest wind and all tides, and is best at around head-high.

maldives surf resorts

The Maldives is one of the most luxurious travel destinations in the world. Home to remote five-star resorts with every amenity your heart desires, tropical island perfection, and overwater bungalows galore – the islands of the Maldives attract jetsetters, honeymooners, and families in search of a luxury vacation with all the bells and whistles.

Because resorts in the Maldives attract a wide variety of travelers, Maldives surf resorts don’t meet the typical definition of a surf resort where the property and the majority of guests revolve around surfing. In the Maldives, there aren’t really resorts dedicated to surfing, rather, you’ll find luxury resorts with access to nearby waves (and a few properties have an exclusive wave breaking off the resort’s island).

The climate is warm and sunny, with pleasant water and light trade winds to cool you down during the midday heat and humidity. The sun is a real factor in the Maldives, so make sure you bring adequate sun protection (rash guards, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc.). Water temps stay around 27 C (81 F) all year, so there is no need for a wetsuit. While the surf season is also the “wet” season, the clouds and squalls tend to blow over the islands relatively quickly, which means that the weather stays pretty close to perfect most of the time, with air temps between 68 – 86 °F (20 – 30 °C).

The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa, which trades at approximately 6 cents USD. That equates to around 15 Rufiyaa per US dollar.

Staying Connected

Nearly all visitors to the Maldives stay at resorts, which typically provide Internet access/Wi-Fi. Independent travelers can purchase SIM cards at the airport upon arrival. These come preloaded, and are much cheaper than using roaming services on most foreign data plans.

Good to Know

Although the Maldives are a tropical beach destination, they are also a Muslim nation. While the resorts are accustomed to Western traditions and have no problem with guests lounging all day in board shorts or bikinis, it is advised that you dress modestly when outside of your resort and amongst the local population.

maldives surf resorts luxury

The Maldives are one of the most popular luxury vacation destinations on the planet and home to some of the world’s best-appointed resorts. Add that to the remote nature of this archipelago and you’re looking at premium pricing to experience this surfer’s paradise.

Although prices can be quite high when compared to other surf destinations, the picturesque Maldivian atolls are as idyllic as they come, so if there were ever a time to treat yourself to a five-star holiday experience, this is it.

Expect costs to range between $300 and $1,000+ per person, per day, depending on where you stay and what level of luxury you opt for. Some stays will include food and drink, transportation, and multiple activities, so many costs can be included in your booking.

Another additional cost will be boats to access the surf (if you’re staying at a resort versus a charter boat). There are only a couple of resorts with a surf break right at the island, so staying at most places will require a boat to access the surf (or a seaplane if you really want to go for it). Surf boat rates vary depending on the resort, but typically range from $100 – $250 per surf transfer.

surfing maldives seaplane

Nearly all surfers visiting the Maldives do so through resorts or charter boats, so your transportation in the Maldives is typically taken care of by your provider. Surf resorts will have boats to get you to the surf, and liveaboard charters are obviously always out on the water in search of perfect waves. That being said, independent travelers typically find it easy to get around, as the islands are relatively small and the people are quite friendly.

Most international flights come into Male’s Velana International Airport (MLE), with connecting domestic flights to numerous atolls throughout the country, including Laamu, Thaa, Huvadhoo, and Dhaalu.

Travel Insurance

surf travel insurance

While we’d all rather not think about getting injured, there are too many cases of people who didn’t think about insurance and get nailed with crazy medical bills after the matter.

That being the case, many hotels and surf properties actually require that you have approved travel insurance in case of a serious inquiry or trip cancellation, especially in the wake of COVID.

You know the deal—better safe than sorry. We recommend  battleface  or  World Nomads Insurance . Both companies offer very comprehensive travel insurance and cover heaps of activities, including surfing and ocean sports. You can easily check them out and get a fast quote below.

What is the best way to access surf if staying at the CrossRoads properties such as Hard Rock Hotel or SAii Lagoon hotel?

Hey Christian, not sure about those specific properties but couldn’t find any info on their sites regarding surfing which is never a good sign as they do mention plenty of other activities that they cater to. I would suggest going with one of the resorts that caters to surfers.

Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort – Lohis

Formerly known as Lohifushi, the all-inclusive Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort is the ultimate tropical getaway for both surfers and non-surfers alike, and is often regarded as the best value-for-money surf resort in the Maldives. With world-class waves on your doorstep, pristine beaches and crystal clear lagoons, we invite you to relax, unwind and indulge in this Maldivian island paradise.

Located in the North Malé Atoll, Hudhuranfushi is only a 30-minute speedboat ride from Malé airport. The island is known to be one of the most naturally beautiful locations in the Maldives, the perfect combination of lush surrounds, white sandy beaches and turquoise lagoons teeming with brightly coloured fish and coral reef.

For surfers, the world-renowned left hander, Lohis Left, is a short walk from your villa, with capped surf numbers ensuring crowds stay at a minimum. It’s the perfect setup for enjoying island resort life, while having exclusive access to one of the best and most consistent waves in the Maldives. This makes Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort the ultimate holiday destination whether you’re a solo surfer on the hunt for waves, a family, a couple or a group of friends.

Keen to check out other waves in the area? Jump on a Hudhuranfushi boat with one of the experienced Lohis surf guides and discover waves like Sultans, Ninjas and Jailbreaks, the furthest surf break being just 20-minutes away.

Hudhuranfushi_Surf_Resort_Surf

Guaranteed Uncrowded Waves & Capped Surfer Numbers

We understand that wave count is important to World Surfaris’ guests who visit Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort, which is why we initiated the capping of surfer numbers at Hudhuranfushi’s house break, Lohis Left.

Whether you’re staying with your family, surfing with friends, on your honeymoon or kicking back for a few days after a boat trip, the capped surfer numbers will ensure you get to enjoy this world-renowned surf break with as few other guests as possible. There aren’t many surf resorts in the Maldives that offer this kind of exclusivity, especially when one of the best left-handers in the area is located right on your doorstep.

Since the surfer cap, World Surfaris’ guests are reporting a more enjoyable surf experience as well as a better atmosphere out in the lineup, which is what a surf trip is all about! Surf, eat, sleep and repeat – what more could you want from a surfing holiday?

Your World Surfaris Surfer Pass

If you intend to surf while staying at Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort, it is essential to book a Surfer Pass, which is included when booking with World Surfaris. With only 45 passes availabile at any time, it is highly reccomended to book your stay as far in advance as possible.

If you are a non-surfing adult traveling with a surfer, World Surfaris offers a $50 USD credit voucher per adult, per day, to redeem on selected non-surfing activities, excursions and spa treatments. This way, both surfers and their non-surfing loved ones can enjoy their experience at Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort to the fullest potential.

Imagine stepping out of your room to discover a world-class wave – it’s a setup that most surfers only dream about!

Lohis Left is consistent year-round, and surfable in most swell, wind and tide conditions. It can be ridden from 2ft to 6ft, and has multiple take-off zones. One of the best things about Lohis Left is that surfer numbers are capped, meaning as a Surf Pass holder you will be one of very few allowed to surf the wave at any given time.

Accommodation

The accommodation at Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort has everything you’d expect from a picture-perfect Maldivian escape. Hudhuranfushi_Surf_Resort_Food

This region has something for everyone, with a variety of reef breaks ranging in intensity from mellow, shreddable walls to heavy, hollow barrels. Some of the most famous North Malé Atolls’ surf breaks include Lohis, Jailbreaks, Honkeys, Sultans, Ninjas, Cokes (Colas) and Chickens.

The surf season in the North Malé Atolls is similar to Indonesia, with the best waves on offer from March through to October. If you’re chasing bigger waves, you’re likely to see more swell throughout June, July and August. The surf generally ranges in size from 2ft to 8 ft, with some bigger swells popping up throughout the year. Winds are normally from the west (off-shore), with swell direction mainly from the south/south-east.

The ever-consistent Lohis Left is only a short walk from your room at the Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort, with another six quality waves nearby, all within a 20-minute boat ride away.

Lohis is the crown jewel of the North Malé Atolls. A peeling left-hander that breaks right off Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort, it’s well-known as one of the most consistent waves in the Maldives.

Once host to the WQS O’Neil ‘Deep Blue Open’, at Lohis you can expect a deep, barrelling pit and rippable wall, or you can pick off the wider sets and enjoy a freight train ride all the way to the end section. In bigger swells, Lohis is more suitable to intermediate-advanced surfers. In smaller swells or during the low season, Lohis is perfect for all levels, including beginners.

Right opposite all the action, the Lohis Deck and Lohis Wave restaurant and bar is the best vantage point to watch the waves roll in. Family and friends can relax with a drink in hand, take photos, mingle with other guests and Lohis surf guides, or simply kick back and enjoy the atmosphere.

Previously off-limits, Jailbreaks is a long right-hander with three sections, including a mid-barrel section. When it’s lining up right, you can expect a super-fun 300m ride!

Located off Thanburudhoo Island, Honkeys is a super-fun left-hander with a mellow take-off, with a 90-degree bend offering a whackable wall. It’s fun, but not always consistent.

Sultans is one of the most consistent and user-friendly right-handers in the world. With long walls and barrel sections, Sultans has plenty of take-off spots, so crowds shouldn’t be a problem.

To the north is Ninjas and it can be seen from the deck at Lohis Village. This is a fun right-hander for beginner to intermediate surfers, depending on the conditions. With an easier take-off, Ninjas is good for both short boarders and longboarders alike.

Cokes (Colas)

One of the more well-known waves in the region, Cokes is a hollow right-hander which breaks at between 3 to 10 ft.

On the other side of Cokes, Chickens is the fastest left-hander in the North Malé Atoll. It’s a swell magnet and can handle swell from 3 to over 10 ft, with rides up to 500m long.

Surf Guides

The experienced surf guides at Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort not only educate guests on surfing in the Maldives, but are also known for creating the uncomparable atmosphere World Surfaris guests experience at Lohis, whether you’re having a beer on the Lohis Deck or scoring epic waves out in the lineup. More often than not, you will leave Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort with lifelong friendships in the surf guides, who live and breathe to make your surfing experience memorable.

The Hudhuranfushi surf guides offer daily boat trips to six other surf breaks, all within a short 20-minute boat trip away. You decide which wave suits you best and our surf guides will make sure you get there.

Photography and videography services are also available through Hudhuranfushi’s surf guides.

Non-Surf Activities

Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort is a dream destination for both surfers and non-surfers alike. The resort offers a wide range of all-inclusive activities and experiences suitable for the whole family, as well as excursions and experiences surrounding the resort available at an additional cost.

From treatments at the spa, to snorkeling the coral reefs, a quick workout at the gym or simply relaxing on a sun lounger with your favourite book, there is so much (or so little) to do at Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort. Whether you’re looking to fill up your days with fun and adventure, or keep the party going after sunset with live music and premium cocktails, there is something for everyone.

World Surfaris guests can enjoy all-inclusive non-motorised watersports and snorkeling, as well as a range of complimentry excursions such as a Dolphin or Sunset Cruise. Non-surfing guests can also redeem their $50 USD daily credit voucher on activites such as yoga, diving, or Chavana Day Spa treatments.

Chavana Day Spa

A trip to the Maldives isn’t complete without a visit to a day spa. The Chavana Day Spa at Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort offers a range of spa services, from traditional aromatherapy massage, to more complex face and body treatments for every skin type.

The experienced Balinese therapists will help purify your body and mind through a myriad of spa treatments and you’ll leave feeling renewed, refreshed and relaxed.

The Chavana Day Spa features four double rooms with outdoor showers and baths, three outdoor bales, manicure and pedicure facilities and a retail boutique with a range of beautiful products and gifts.

Sporting Facilities

If you like to get active on holidays, Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort has a range of sporting facilities to keep you entertained. Play tennis or squash, workout in the gym, take the kids to the playground or swim some laps in the pool.

Yoga & Physiotherapy

If you just can’t miss your weekly yoga sessions, no worries. Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort offers surf-specific yoga sessions twice a day, perfect for stretching out between surfs. Private and semi-private yoga sessions are available at the resort, as well as physiotherapy sessions with an experienced physiotherapist.

Snorkeling & Watersports

The lagoons out the front of Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort are teeming with tropical fish and coral reefs, making it the perfect place to grab a snorkel, fins and goggles and take off to explore the crystal clear water and marine life.

The Maldives is an aquatic playground, so it’s not surprising that it attracts watersport lovers from around the world. From catamaran sailing, to wind surfing, jet skiing, canoeing and kite surfing, Hudhuranfushi has it all.

Dive Centre

The abundant marine life and pristine waters of the North Malé Atoll make it the ideal place to dive. From bronze whale sharks, to tropical fish and coral, the Maldives is on the top 10 must-dive sites for international divers.

From Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort you can access a spectacular 40 different dive points, including MS Victory Wreck, Octbetilla, Manta Point, Shark Point, Rainbow Giri, Lions Head, Paradise Rock, Aquarium, Coral Garden, Banana Reef and more.

Never dived before? No worries. Hudhuranfushi Resort offers dive courses in English, German, Japanese and Dhivehi. Additionally, the resort offers certificates for PADI, Barakuda and CMAS. Equipment hire is available through the dive centre, including BCD, regulator, wetsuit, computer, mask, fins, snorkel, video camera and more. Diving experiences and excursions are available every day, weather permitting.

A weekly fishing excursion is included for all surfers and their families during their stay. This is a casual and light-hearted experience where surfers can connect and enjoy an activity together after a day in the surf. Other fishing trips and experiences are also available at Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort.

Lohis Deck & Beaches

Prefer to keep it simple? Kick back on a sun lounger with a drink of your choice at one of Hudhuranfushi Resort’s pristine beaches, or head to the Lohis Deck for the perfect shady vantage point of the surf.

Surfing in the Maldives | The Ultimate Guide

The Maldives is a tropical surf paradise of which everyone wants a slice. The Indian Ocean nation comprises over 1000 islands, many of them hosting world-class waves. The sort of perfect blue-water reef passes we dream about and draw on our school books. Many of the best Maldivian surf breaks come without the power and intimidating nature of Fiji or the Mentawais. Today, we dive into everything you need to know about surfing in the Maldives. From how to get there, where to stay, where to surf, and when to go, here’s everything you need to know.

  • Perfect waves
  • Tropical climate
  • Pristine waters
  • Spot variety
  • Consistency

Table of Contents

Best time of year.

The best time to surf in the Maldives is between April and October. This is when the largest swells from deep in the southern Indian Ocean reach the islands. While you could luck into a swell outside this season, it often goes flat, plagued with onshore winds. So if you want to score good waves head to the Maldives in season!

Maldives Surf Spots Breakdown

The best surf breaks in the Maldives can be broken down into three areas, made up of three sets of atolls.

Cokes is a fast, powerful (and shallow) right-hander. A super popular wave located on Thulusdhoo Island. You can paddle from the lookout platform, or take the boat from the beach. Because Cokes is an incredible wave and one of the most accessible in the Maldives, it’s as crowded as you’d expect.

  • Crowds: Thick
  • Best Swell: Mid W-SW
  • Best Wind: Offshore
  • Wave Type: Right Reef
  • Consistency: 70%
  • Hazards: Shallow reef, crowds

Just across the channel from Cokes, is Chickens. A short boat ride over to Chickens gifts you with a super fun left-hander. A long wave with sections for tubes, and turns. An epic wave that under the right swell direction, comes to life. (see Surfline for what makes it tick).

  • Wave Type: Left Reef

maldives surfing trip

Sultans is another dreamy righthander, a few K’s south of Thulusdhoo. Sultans is a world-class right, with sections for tubes and walls for carves. Sultans is also the site of the Four Seasons Surf Invitational , won in 2023 by Joel Parkinson. A sick wave, you need to check out!

  • Crowds: Moderate
  • Consistency: 60%

One of the more mellow breaks in the area, Ninjas is a mellow right-hand wall that can be an excellent option for both intermediates and advanced surfers.

  • Best Swell: Small W-SW
  • Consistency: 50%

Jailbreaks

Jailbreaks was named after the Maldives national jail that faces the break. (yeah don’t break the law while you’re here as you’ll be locked up facing perfect waves). But Jailbreaks is a somewhat section right-hander, but under the right tide, and swell, it can be another perfect right!

  • Crowds: Low

Pasta Point

Pasta Point is the most famous wave in the Maldives and the spot that put the country on the International surfing map. However, you can’t rock up and surf Pasta. Unfortunately, you’ll need to stay at the Donhevi Surf Resort , perched overlooking the wave. For $500+ per night, staying here promises empty waves, and no one from outside of the resort is allowed to surf the resort. While this sucks if you’re on a budget surf trip, if you’ve got the funds, it’s a dreamy place to stay!

  • Best Swell: Large W-SW
  • Hazards: Shallow reef, crowds, private

Lohis is another perfect but privatized left-hander. The Lohis bar is famous, you’ve seen the shots right? Crew sipping drinks with perfect lefts peeling in front of them. Yep, that’s Lohis. You’ll need to stay at Huduran Fushi Resort to sample it, which will set you back hundreds of dollars per night!

*Please note: These are just the Northern Atoll surf breaks. there are many more surf breaks throughout the Central and Southern Atolls. Stay tuned for more content on those spots!

Cokes Surf Line Up

Maldives Surf Break Privatization

The Maldives and wave privatization are synonymous and it’s one of the first things we think of when surfing in the Maldives. However, don’t stress. There are only a handful of waves you can’t surf. Privatized waves include Pasta Point, Lohis, and Niyama, anywhere else is fair game and yes everywhere else is crowded.

How to Get There?

Getting to the Maldives is straightforward, as it’s a long way from just about anywhere else on Earth. Unless you’re coming from the Middle East, it’s a mission. From Asia, there are affordable flights from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur , which is around 4 hours from Male. Carriers such as Air Asia, Scoot, and Sri Lankan Airways all have routes to and from Male. From further afield, flying to the Maldives is long and expensive. Check out the best flight prices to the Maldives here on Kayak.

*Before booking flights to The Maldives, check my guide on surfboard baggage fees , to make sure you’re not paying stupid money for boards!

Getting Around

By public ferry .

The cheapest way to get around in the Maldives is by public ferry. You can get public ferries between local islands for less than $15. Check out routes here. Please note, that no public services run on Fridays in Maldives.

By Speed Boat

The best way to get around in the Maldives in terms of affordability and efficiency is by speed boat. You can get speed boats between Male and Thulusdhoo Island for $25 per person each way. I organized this via my accommodation which used a company called River Speed.

By Sea Plane

If you’re staying at one of the many surf resorts in the Maldives. If you’re short on time but have plenty of cash, flying to the surf islands by seaplane is the quickest way to get around. You can take planes from the designated seaplane terminal at Male Airport. Check out seaplane routes here.

Where to Stay?

While Maldives is synonymous with exclusivity, luxury, and being one of the world’s most expensive surf destinations, there are some affordable places to stay. Here are some of the best surf accommodations in the Maldives, for budget, mid, and luxury price ranges. Check out Booking.com for the cheapest surf accommodations in the Maldives.

  • Dorm Price: $29 per night
  • Distance from Surf: 10 minute walk to Cokes
  • Type: Privates

iHaven is one of the cheapest places to stay on Thulusdhoo. From here, you’ll be able to walk out to Cokes and all the restaurants in town, including the beautiful bikini beach. The rooms are clean, and comfortable and come with wifi and a coffee machine. Rooms start at $29 per night. Check out iHaven here.

Golhaa View Inn

  • Dorm Price: $50 per night

Golhaa View Inn is located seconds from Bikini Beach. (Bikini beach is a stunning white sand beach and also where you take the boat to reach other surf breaks. Cokes is a 5-minute walk along the beach. This is where I stayed during my Maldives surf trip and it did the job just fine!  While it is nothing luxurious, the A/C was great and the price included breakfast. Rooms are $50 per night and sleep 2. Learn more about Golhaa View Inn here.

  • Dorm Price: $37 per night

Another excellent and affordable place to stay for surfing on Thulusdhoo is Keyla Inn. rooms start at $37 per night , with private bathrooms, A/C, 24-hour front desk, and decent wifi. Learn more about Keyla Inn here.

  • Dorm Price: $47 per night

Perched beachfront overlooking Cokes, Batuta is an epic spot to stay on Thulusdhoo, I didn’t stay here, but I did swing by for a coffee or coconut most days and sat in the sandy cafe area out front. Rooms have wifi and private bathrooms and some overlook Cokes. Prices for rooms start at $47 per night. Check out Batuta here.

Dhodi Retreat

  • Dorm Price: $67 per night

For something slightly more upmarket, and a beautiful aesthetic right on the beach, Dhodi is a wicked spot to stay. Perched on the sand, you’ll overlook Cokes and relax out in hammocks on the sand post-surf. The stuff of dreams, really… Learn more about Dohdi here. Prices from $67 per night.

Maldives Budget Surf Trip - Step by Step

  • Fly to Male

  • Eat at local restaurants for $5-10 per meal

Tips for Surfing in the Maldives

Accessibility.

Other than Thulusdhoo, or if you’re staying at an exclusive resort, you’ll need a boat to explore most of the waves in the Maldives. You can organize boat trips to the surf via a kiosk on the beach or your accommodation, depending on where you stay. The only wave you can surf of your own accord (without resort exclusivity) is Cokes.

Consistency

While the Maldives is a world-class surf destination, it does lack the power and consistency of other perfect destinations such as Fiji or Indonesia. Swells have to track way up through the Indian Ocean to rehab the islands and the Maldives is prone to flat spells and bad winds. Especially if you’re visiting in shoulder season.

For example, on my trip, the waves were 4-5ft for the first few days then deteriorated to 1-2ft for the last few days, still surfable but not what you come to paradise for.

As you’d expect for somewhere this famous, well-known, and relatively user-friendly, the crowds are insane in the Maldives. Don’t expect to visit without battling the crowds. Everyone wants a slice of paradise, but because the Maldives has a mix of resorts, land-based accommodations, boat trips, and charters, you have so many surfers (many traveling in groups) that descend on most breaks all at once. Throw in the locals (who should and do get the best ones) and you have a recipe for a frustrating surf trip experience.

The Maldives lies just above the equator and so it’s unbelievably hot here! Anytime between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., the heat is intense. A consistent 30°c+ and surfing are anytime other than at dawn, requires full zinc, rash vest, and surf hat.

While not as gnarly as other breaks in terms of power, the reefs in the Maldives are still incredibly sharp. Many people wear reef boots, and while my feet remained unscathed (thanks to safety surfing on my Maldives surf trip), I did scrape my hands on the reef at Cokes while paddling out a few times.

Religion/Culture

The Maldives is a strict Sunni Muslim country so religion is a huge part of life here. You’ll hear the morning prayer call daily at 4.30 am and alcohol is hard to come by on local islands. If you’re a girl, you’ll also have to be wary of how you dress, as there are some beaches, that require you to “cover up” and there are even designated Bikini/Tourist beaches”.

In my experience, the food is pretty average in the Maldives. Most Western dishes are usually disappointing, and I’d suggest sticking to local seafood/rice-style dishes or going for Sri Lanka-style curries, these are not only cheaper but more delicious! Just watch out for the spice!

At resorts, the internet will be decent, but on the local islands, it can be hit-and-miss. During my stay on Thulusdhoo, I found the internet to be pretty good and managed to get (some) work done, but found it frustratingly slow for streaming high-quality videos or making calls–a tricky place to work a surfing digital nomad.

Maldives Food

Final Words

While the Maldives isn’t one of the world’s cheapest surf destinations , it’s a bloody good one. With pristine waters, perfect reef breaks, tropical weather, and spot variety, it’s a must-do surf destination for everyone. Beginners might struggle but if you’re an intermediate or advanced surfer, it’s one of the best surf destinations in the world. Geography & Population

Maldives consists of 1192 coral islands in 26 atolls with a total land area of 300 km2.

90% of the islands have a land area less than 0.5 km2, and 80% of the islands are less than 1 metre above sea level. Of the 1192 islands, only 192 are inhabited.

Maldives’ marine area is almost one million km2. The coral reefs and sand islands are located on a submarine ridge formed on ancient, now sunken, volcanoes. The coral reef systems are the 7th largest and the 5th most diverse ecosystem.

The population is 400,000 people, mostly living on Malé (capital city), with one of the highest densities in the world.

Biodiversity

maldives surfing trip

Maldives was ventured in 2000 BCE, via maritime trading routes by Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Indus Valley civilizations. Traders & travellers continued to visit, becoming the main source of cowrie shells, used as currency in Asia & Africa. Sri Lankans arrived next, by the 4th C AD Theravada Buddhism dominated in Maldives. Arabs were the last to arrive in the 9th C and by the 10th C AD the Middle Eastern seafarers. The last Buddhist King converted to Islam in 1153. After the 16th C, it was under Portuguese, Dutch & British control, largely self-governed by the Sultans until 1932 when the sultanate became elective. The British were the last colonial power and even after Maldivian independence in 1965, continued to have a presence till 1976. The sultanate was abolished in 1968, establishing a republic.

Language and culture

Dhivehi is the national language of the Maldives. Many languages including Arabic, French, Persian, Portuguese, Hindustani, and English, have influenced the development of Dhivehi through the ages. English language is widely spoken. Practically every Maldivian speaks English because it’s the language used in Maldivian schools. English is the Maldives’ unofficial second language. The Maldives is 100% Sunni Muslim. Tourists should respect the local rules: dress respectfully when visiting the capital or local islands. Most local islands have a designated Bikini Beach for tourists, where bikini attire is allowed. Alcohol is not permitted on local islands. No pork may be brought. Dress codes & alcohol laws do not apply to tourists staying at resorts or on liveaboard boats.

maldives surfing trip

The Maldivian cuisine is a rich assemblage of traditional flavours with strong influences from its neighbouring countries, India and Sri Lanka; a unique culinary identity.

Mas huni is a Maldivian speciality tuna salad with coconut that is traditionally eaten for breakfast with chapati bread (amazing after a morning surf!) The fresh spicy dish is made with tuna, coconut, chilli and onion, blended, seasoned and served with chapati bread.

Planning A Maldives Surf Trip – Which Is BEST Option For YOU?

Planning a Maldives surf trip? Find your perfect fit – inc surf resorts, surf charters & local islands – something for all styles and budgets

If you’re planning a Maldives surf trip , you’ll quickly realise that there a whole heap of options to choose from and the range in prices is just as varied!

So to help you plan your perfect tropical escape here’s my guide to all things Maldives surfing – including the best Maldives Surf resorts , Maldives surf charters and local island stays – so you can find the best fit for you…

Maldives Surf Resorts

When it comes to a luxury Maldives surf trip, the range of epic Maldives surf resorts are top of the bucket list. So which one of these options is going to suit your style and budget best?

Resorts With Private Surf Breaks

Cinnamon dhonveli.

pasta point surfing maldives resort cinnamon dhonveli

This reeling left hander can only be surfed by people booked onto a surfer package at the island, with a limited surfer allocation of 30.

Click here for more info and to book

Holiday Inn Kandooma

A great value resort, Holiday Inn is home of Kandooma Right, the resort exclusive surf break.

This fast, reeling right hander hosts a max of 40 surfers and is an easy paddle out from the resort – with many of the overwater bungalows overlooking it.

Click here for more info and to book

Niyama Private Islands

Another epic option for goofy footers – Niyama Private Islands is home to Vodi, a pretty epic left hander that 3 x world champion Gabriel Medina often uses as a pre-season training ground. Although there isn’t a cap on the number of surfers, it is exclusive for the islands guests and crowds are rare.

Adaaran Hudhuranfushi

Home of Lohis, Adaaran Hudhuranfushi has this reeling left hander an easy paddle out off the island, as well as being in short boating distance of many other awesome surf spots too.

Capped at 40 surfers max, Lohis is yet another goofy footed dream!

Best Resorts For A Variety Of Surf Spots

If you’re looking for a Maldives surf resort with access to a whole array of spots, Cinnamon Dhonveli is my top pick. The surf packages here include transfers to all the breaks surrounding the island – which includes the likes of Sultans, Honkys, Jailbreaks, Cokes, Chickens and Ninjas.

With that many spots to choose from, and with Pasta right on your doorstep, there’s something for very swell, skill level and preference.

Kuda Villingili

Kuda Villingili also sits right amongst the best surf spots in the North Male Atoll , with Chickens an easy paddle from the resort and Cokes sitting right across the channel.

Sultans, Honkys and Jails are all within a short boat ride too, although surf transfers aren’t included in your stay.

Ayada Maldives

Although Ayada Maldives doesn’t have a surf break directly off the island, there are a huge variety of surf spots all within a short boat ride. With the closest being just 10 minutes away.

From draining barrels at Five Islands and Beacons through to long, carveable walls at the likes of Two Ways, Blue Bowls and Love Charms – Ayada is nestled in amongst some super fun, uncrowded waves.

Best Resorts For Luxury

The location of Niyama – down in the Dhaalu Atoll – also means there are far less surfers in the area, so you can almost guarantee there won’t be a crowd in the lineup when you paddle out.

As one of the newest Maldives resorts (it opened in June 2021!) Kuda Villingili offers full 5* luxury and even has the largest swimming pool in the Maldives! Choose from a huge variety of room options, all boasting epic sea views and their signature Overwater Bungalows are the height of Maldives luxury.

Plus having Chickens (one of my personal favourite ones!) an easy paddle off the resort is a huge bonus!

Four Seasons

As you’d expect from the Four Seasons brand, their Maldives resort comes with all the luxurious touches you could imagine. Incredible rooms, dining and customer service, the Four Season is always a solid choice for luxury living.

The only downside is the lack of surf break at the actual resort, and the cost of surf transfers can mount up quickly.

Six Senses Laamu

Situated down in Laamu Atoll, Six Senses eco signature style is perfect for those looking to kick back in some barefoot luxury.

With a fun house reef and spots like Yin Yangs just a short boat ride away it’s another great option for those wanting 5* accomodation and waves.

Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Veli

Situated in the South Male Atoll, Veli and Dhigu both come back with all the luxury you’d expect from the Anantara brand and both island share a variety of restaurants and facilities.

Although not a surf specific resort, Anantara Veli has a fast, punchy right hander off it and both offer surf transfer to a variety of surrounding breaks, as well as the North Male Atoll favourites too.

Anantara Veli is also an adults only island for those looking for a more mature clientele.

Best Resort Options For Families

Out of all the Maldives surf resort on the list, Holiday Inn Kandooma is the best fit for families. The close proximity to the airport, kids club and resort facilities always make it a good choice for surfer travelling with their kids.

Alongside the luxury side of Niyama – also comes the included kids clubs offering a huge range of activities for the little ones, so it’s a great place to head if you’re travelling with your family. Although the overall vibe of the resort isn’t as child friendly as Kandooma, it’s still a solid choice.

Most Budget Friendly Resorts

Out of all the options on the list, the Kandooma surf packages offer the best value and starts at US$1,270pp for a 5 night stay.

This is based on two sharing and includes return airport transfers, all meals as well as surf guiding and transfers. Non surfers get a discounted rate too.

Although not the cheapest option on the list, Pasta Point can offer some solid value for money, especially if you get in with the earlybird booking rates, which cut off in jan for the upcoming season.

Their surf packages are all inclusive as well – with airport transfers, all meals, access to Pasta Point and daily surf guiding and transfers to most of the North Male Atoll breaks (inc Honkys, Sultans, Jailbreaks, Cokes and Chickens) the only extra you’d need to add on would be booze.

5 nights in a Garden Villa starts from $2,448 per person – based on 3 sharing. Non surfers get a discount too and off season from Nov to Feb is also slightly cheaper as well.

Best Resort For Uncrowded Waves

Down in the Southern Atolls, Ayada Maldives is a perfect option for those looking to get more of the beaten track and score uncrowded waves and is certainly our teams pick for those looking to score empty lineups.

Surf transfers are around US$130 per person, per transfer. Pre booking before you arrive will save you 25% too.

Again, down in the Southern Atolls, Niyama offers some seriously uncrowded goodness when it comes to waves.

If you want to venture away from the pumping lefts of Vodi, you’re sure to score even less in the lineup too – just expect to pay around US$150 per person, per transfer to the surrounding breaks.

Maldives Surf Charters

If you’re looking for a more off the beaten track experience, want to chase the swell, or have a group of mates in tow then a Maldives surf charter is a great option to add into the mix. Here are some of the best options out there for all styles and budgets.

Best Surf Charters For Luxury

Carpe vita & carpe diem.

Carpe Diem and Carpe Vita are two of the most popular, luxury Maldives surf charters, both catering for up to 12 guests. With an experienced crew, surf guides and all the luxury you’d expect from a high end surf charter, they’re ideal for a group trip chasing the best waves the Atolls have to offer.

For small group luxury Over Reef is hard to beat. This stylish and ultra luxurious charter isn’t surf specific, but their crew and guides will certainly help you chase the waves in style. Mainly based in the Male Atolls, it sleeps 6 across 3 double cabins and has flexible travel dates too.

Best Surf Charters For Flexible Dates

With no fixed start or finish dates, Blue Star is an awesome option for those looking flexible start dates or whose flights don’t match up with any fixed date departures. Based in the North and South Malé Atolls for most of the season, Blue Stars packages include airport pickups and you’ll be transferred to where the boat is moored up for that day.

If you want to treat yourself to a flexible date itinerary then Over Reef is an epic option to check out. Available for private charter with flexible start dates it sleep up to 6 across 3 double cabins.

Choose your itinerary and chase the swell – complete with onboard private chef, Over Reef is a stunning choice for you surf trip!

Best Surf Charters For Solo Surfers

If you’re looking to get a bit off the beaten track and explore some less crowded spots, Horizon 2 takes in some of the best breaks of the Southern Atolls and you can book single spots rather than needing a small group.

There is a minimum number needed for the trip to run – but 99% of start dates end up being confirmed so it’s a solid bet for solo travellers.

With it’s flexible itinerary Blue Star is another solid shout for solo travellers and you can choose from shared cabins or pay a little extra to upgrade to a private room.

Best Surf Charters For Private Trips

Two of the most reknowned Maldives surf charters – Carpe Vita and Carpe Diem come kitted out with everything you need for a truly memorable Maldives surf trip and Carpe Vita even has it’s own hot tub on the deck, perfect for a post surf beer!

Both surf charters sleep up to 12 passengers, come with some of the most experienced captains and crew in the Maldives and are ideal for chasing the swell.

A 7 night private charter on Carpe Vita is around $24,400, or Cape Vita will set you back around US$33,700

As one of my top picks for luxury Maldives surf charters, Over Reef is also an epic option for those looking for a private surf charter too. With a max capacity of 6 guests it’s ideal for a small group of friends or couples looking for some luxury and wave hunting.

Expect to pay between US$2,000 to US$3,000 per night depending on the season.

Local Island Surfing

Looking for a more budget friendly, authentically Maldivian surf experience? Well then the local island options are going to right up your street.

Just be aware that as a strict Muslim country all local islands are “dry” so don’t expect to sip a cold post surf beer!

Thulusdhoo

thulusdhoo island maldives surf guide surfing 3

It’s a pretty easy paddle out off the main island, and the super fun left hander Chickens sits right across the channel – with a boat transfer costing around US$10pp.

It’s location in the North Male Atoll means you can also grab a transfer to heaps of other breaks too – including Sultans, Honkys, Jailbreaks or Ninjas – with transfers starting at around US$25pp

When it comes to accomodation there’s a pretty good selection to choose from and it’s much more affordable than you might imagine. Akiri Surf Retreat is from US57 per night (with custom surf packages available) whilst the 4* hotel, Season Paradise offers a rooftop pool and ocean view rooms from US$200 on their surf packages.

Check out my full Thulusdhoo Surf Guide here

For those looking for a really budget friendly Maldives surf trip, Himmafushi is a great option.

Just 15 mins speedboat journey from the airport, Himmafushi Island is home to the right hander “Jailbreaks” – aka “Jails”. This wave breaks on a huge variety fo swells and can handle some serious size – with a mix of carveable walls and fast, cover up sections.

The island itself isn’t as developed as Thulusdhoo in terms of tourism, but is perfect for those who want simple, wave filled days and surf transfers to Cokes, Chickens, Honkys and Sultans are easily available.

Jailbreak Surf Inn is one of the best value surf camps the Maldives has to offer – with packages from US$55 per night – for 2 people and including daily breakfast and daily surf transfer to Sultans/Honkys.

Which option are you choosing for your Maldives surf trip?

6 of The Best Surf Resorts in Maldives

6 of the best surf resorts in Maldives

This is our pick of the  6 Best Surf Resorts in Maldives .

The Maldives, or, as Marco Polo called it “The flower of the Indies” is made up of around 1,200 different islands spread over 800 km in the Indian Ocean. The islands benefit from exposure to southern swells. This makes for some of the best surfing conditions. With so many islands in the Maldives, there is a lot of variation in terms of the way that the shorelines are made up, with lots of great surfing reefs as a result.

The amazing swells that the Maldives sees are the same as the ones that get experienced in Indonesia, however, the waves tend to not be so aggressive as they are in the likes of Bali , Java, or the Mentawai Islands .

There are some great world-class breaks in the Maldives. You can find these at Cokes, Chickens, Pasta Point, Sultans, Ninjas, Honkey’s.lohls, and many others.

The various Surf Resorts in Maldives offer a great way of enjoying all of these great breaks. Whether you are completely new to surfing or you’ve surfed lots of other great beaches elsewhere, making your base at a surf resort is an ideal choice.

For newer surfers, surf resorts offer a chance to take up a couple of classes, while for anyone who feels that they know what they are doing, it gives them the chance to share tips and stories with other surfers from all over the world. Surf resorts in Maldives are a great place to use as your base, but they are awesome for meeting new people.

With many of the amazing private island resorts offering a range of different surfing packages as part of their activity offers, you can often gain access to some of the most exclusive surf breaks in the world. So, when picking your Maldives surf holiday, it is always important to find out exactly what is on offer in terms of nearby surf spots. Some of these places are once in a lifetime surf experiences, and they can be yours to enjoy as part of your amazing holiday in the Maldives.

Cokes Surf Camp

surf camp in the maldives

First on our list of the best surf resorts in Maldives is Cokes Surf Camp . Situated on the island of Thulusdhoo, Cokes Surf Camp is in the ideal spot for you to surf the great breaks at Cokes and Chickens.

Cokes is a great right-hander that is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. It breaks over a shallow reef. Named after the Coca-Cola factory on Thulusdhoo, it enjoys a big swell at times which should only be attempted by the most experienced surfers.

Chickens is a nifty left-hander situated across the channel from Cokes on the uninhabited island of Villignilimathi Huraa, which is home to a bunch of wild chickens. This break is known for its very long rides of up to 500 meters. Waves range from 3 ft right up to 14 ft. On days when the swell is at its best, Chickens has one of the best waves in the world.

There is a choice of single, double, triple, and even quad rooms at Cokes Surf Camp. All the guests have one thing in common, surfing. With surf lessons available through the camp, there is something for newer surfers too.

The camp has a popular outdoor restaurant, where guests can chat about their experiences over a buffet meal at breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort

surf resorts in Maldives

The Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort is made up of 110 beach villas and over water suites. The beach villas all have direct access to a beautiful beach and are available in both one and two-bedroom options. You can also choose a villa that has its very own private pool too.

If you are staying at the resort you will get access to Anantara’s very own wave, Veli Left. It is one that advanced surfers will need to surf out to ride.  Nearby, you can surf Nonyas, which have easy, mellow take-offs, as well as Boatyards, Riptides, Natives and a whole load more besides.

The resort is packed with different leisure activities, so when you are not in the water there is plenty to do, see, and experience. This includes an infinity pool, water skiing, sunset cruises, dolphin quests, snorkeling, a fitness center, yoga, meditation, and tennis.

Niyama Private Islands Maldives

surf resorts in maldives

Next on our list of the best surf resorts in Maldives is Niyama Private Islands Maldives .

The award-winning Niyama Private Islands Maldives has two islands, Play and Chill. If you want a bit of adventure and excitement, you’ll find plenty of this on Play. But for the relaxed moments, you can lounge around with just an empty ocean scape for a view, or spend time in Drift Spa.

surfing the maldives

But since it the surf that you are going there for, just off Niyama’s Play Island is Vodi, a powerful left-hander. A few minutes in a speedboat will take you to Kasabu, a hollow right-hander.

With beautiful villas with secluded decks that provide the greatest privacy and has its own butler service. There are options for a private pool with your villa, or for your villa to be set over the water. There are deluxe and family villas and a whole range of pavilions on offer too. You can even rent out a crescent that sleeps 14 adults and 8 children which is 5 villas raised over the water.

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa

There are so many activities that you can enjoy including catamaran sailing, turtle feeding, as well as dolphin cruises, and more.

Of course, there is also surfing. It is not so much about the breaks that are near to this villa. It is more about where your imagination takes you. You can fly by seaplane to find the ultimate surfing destination that suits the way that you want to surf. You have the freedom to choose the surf safari that you want.

Ayada Maldives

You can rent your board from Ayada. With a range of different surfing packages, you can book as many sessions as you need so that you can plan your surf visits at the start of your trip.

You can enjoy an uncrowded surf experience across four different amazing surf breaks. These are all just a short boat ride away from the resort. If you are looking for a right-hander you will enjoy Airport Lights with its great barrels. Vilingili/ Madihera is a fantastic left-hander that can grow from a gentle wave to a powerful one within just a few short meters. There is a real mix of different ability levels available across the different surf breaks on offer here.

Surf conditions

The Maldives surf season goes from April to October. Waves are incredibly consistent and while June and July may get a bit wet, it's is hard to complain about some rain when the waves are pumping and the water is 28°C. Since the Central and Southern Atolls are harder to access than the Male Atolls, fewer boats operate in the area – which translates to fewer surfers in the line-up. Since most surfers heading to the Central and Southern Atolls are usually interested in more advanced waves, this often leaves other more intermediate spots (but still world-class) completely empty. This is the perfect recipe for a week of scoring incredible waves and improving your surfing skills. CENTRAL ATOLLS

The driving force behind your dreamy trips! LUEX is Tim's brainchild and the result of years of traveling, surfing, and freeskiing. A passionate world nomad, Tim has lived in Europe, Australia, and Northern California, and is no stranger to the best lineups, both surf, and snow all over Europe, Mexico, Hawaii, Indonesia, and South Africa either! A lover of warm water, Tim takes care of our guests wanting to score an epic trip on a surf charter in the Maldives. Better than any online surf guide, Tim knows all the ins and outs to surfing in the Maldives as a result of "too many trips to remember" to the small tropical paradise in the Indian Ocean.

Some waves in the Maldives are private! You need a surfpass for them and can NOT book them, when you are already there.

Make sure your passport is valid long enough for your stay.

Not all islands have easy access to surf, so the transfer to the spots is important!

The Maldives are alcohol-free, since they are an islamic nation. However most boats, resorts and camps have a licence, so you can consume your beer or cocktails there.

Please inform yourself about the local laws and restrictions before your trip!

Total flexibility to surf the Maldives best waves

Criss-cross atolls and explore the last frontiers of the tropical island paradise with one thought in mind - SCORE PERFECT WAVES. Traveling on a charter boat gives you the freedom, flexibility and total mobility in the search for waves. There’s nothing worse than being stuck in one place waiting for the swell to hit or get completely skunked for waves. Traveling on a boat however mean you get to go wherever the action is.......every day. Your experienced guides and crew are there simply to ensure you have maximum wave time on the best waves and all perfectly suited to your personal surfing level.

Maldives surf charters are accessible for everyone

Maldives surf boats are accessible for everyone – young chargers, old-boy longboard crews, groups made up of surf addicts and non-surfers alike, even a girls-only party. However, they tend to be most popular with mixed groups because the idea of grabbing a surf boat just for you and your surf buddies is one which widely appeals. Boats start out with as few as 4 persons so this dream vision is well within the range of possibility.

Private charter boats for families or small groups

Nothing beats a private charter. Homogeneous skill levels and same surf spot preferences, no lengthy discussion when to and where to go, no instant crowds, no strangers you may not get along with, etc.. Just you and your family or friends. We have plenty of options in all price segments - with some boats require an occupancy rate of 4 or 6 guests only.

Score world-class waves across all Atolls

Do you want to surf the North Male Atoll playground, sneak away from the crowds and surf some jewels in the South Male Atolls, conquer the last wave frontier up north or want to casually cruise the Central Atolls? we got you covered. We can set you up with trips all year around. Cruise south and back up north to save money, fly one way / sail the other or fly -sail - fly. We can arrange whatever itinerary that fits your style, budget, and preference of commute.

One of the hottest and the most reliable surf spots in the world - and you can have it, no matter what!

With a surf charter you are as flexible as it can be - get to every wave you wanna surf!

Much less crowded than the northern parts of the Maldives, you can have the time of your life here.

Renegade Surf Travel is proud to have a 5 star rating on both Google and Facebook.

It was an absolutely amazing experience. This was my first boat trip and so far the best surf trip of my life.

From start to finish my experience with Renegade was outstanding. The top tier customer service from Simon and Dale in answering my numerous questions before committing to Renegade was what wold me initially. The personalized coaching from Nic and footage from Beth were unmatched, and the friendliness of the surf guide and boat crew topped it off. The added bonus was getting to make new friends from around the world. Definitely worth the money! Memories made.

Hands down the best coaching experience I’ve had. Renegade not only delivered, they exceeded on every element of this trip. There’s no question that I’ll book to go with them again.

Maldives Surf Boat Trips

Surf boat charters maldives, orca from us$1680, noorani 2 from us$1425, haira from us$1890, hamathi from us$1648.

Core Travel Company, an Australian company, has been operating safaris in Maldives for 22 years, their experience in the safari business is unrivalled with Brian James at the helm. Good boats, good owners, good crews, good guides, good food and of course, good surf. Choose the isolation of the Central Atolls or the always pumping Male Atolls and you get the holiday dreams are made of.

I just wanted to start by saying, the experience & knowledge of Brian, Jarro and their team, is just amazing.

Knowing Brian has close to 25 years experience in the Maldives, running surf trips, & even writing a book on history of Maldives, including spots, pioneers, and history.

Jarro has also a wealth of knowledge approximately 20 years. They have such in depth knowledge of the Maldives not only the spots, swell directions, conditions, giving you the ultimate trip & experience. Both Brian and Jarro are very highly respected by many of the other companies & surf guides whom have been there for along time. Even if surf is not firing he and his team will just come up with a island visit or fishing, or find where the next spot that will light up and move the boat there ready. I’m no fisherman but have caught GT’s, Tuna, Wahoo, Red Sea Bass (I reckon it was a Coral Trout, haha)

I have travelled to many exotic places (including boats, camps, off the beaten tracks) some are now getting well known, but others are still yet too be discovered by the mainstream throughout Pacific and Indian Ocean but Maldives, is truly, one of the most amazing places and is like a giant aquarium and wonderland. I have done a few trips with these guys, and honestly after the experiences with them, I have returned every year. Passing on my experiences to many friends/family/work colleagues, whom are also now booking with these guys too.

I cannot speak highly enough of these guys, but honestly I didn’t want the word to get out how good Maldives is, but if you want the best company and experiences chat with Brian or Jarro or their team.

Yours truly Mark ‘Snowy’ Levey Gold Coast. Australia

I have travelled with Brian on several safaris dating back to 2003. First with Core Travel in the early days and more recently with him on the luxury safari, Carpe Vita with a group hosted by Bob McTavish, a real memorable trip with great waves and great friendships made.

All safaris have been far from the busy areas and Brian’s knowledge of these remote surfing points gives surfers the edge over the fleet. The name of the game in Central and Southern Atolls is one boat with friends surfing perfect waves with no one else in sight. Brian does his utmost to achieve this goal.

His experience in hosting surf groups is evident with an amiable character that puts all guests at ease and confident in his ability.

Personally I have a passion for fishing and although the trips have been primarily surf trips the fishing has been fantastic. So many opportunities to wet a line, while travelling the lures are always out and while at anchor day or night the fish bite well.

Brian’s Maldives safaris are highly recommended by myself and I will be back in Maldives asap. Get onboard if you can, you will not regret it.

Ron Morgan Hervey Bay, QLD. AUSTRALIA.
