Top 3 Manu Reserved Zone Tours

Frog in Manu Park

The Manu Reserved Zone is the area of Manu National Park where tourists are permitted to visit, as the rest of the national park is fully protected. Manu is Peru’s largest national park and covers around 1.5 million hectares of tropical Amazon Rainforest and Cloud Forest high in the Andes. Cloud forest is defined as forest penetrated by cloud cover and is one of the world’s most threatened habitats.

Manu Macaw Clay Lick

Covering such a large area of the Amazon Rainforest (the world’s largest home of animals and plants) on Manu Reserved Zone tours, and when visiting the surrounding Manu region, you can see an incredible amount of wildlife. It is thought that Manu protects a higher level of biodiversity than anywhere else on Earth.

The favorite animals to see include tapir, South America’s largest land mammal, playful and highly social giant river otters, several species of large and colorful macaw parrots, fascinating frogs, lizards, and snakes, giant butterflies, colorful toucans, delicate and intricate orchids, hummingbirds, and the rarely sighted jaguar (seen by around 10% of guests to Manu Wildlife Center). These sightings are then accompanied by an amazing amount of other sights and unique Amazonian sounds.

Emperor Tamarin at Manu Wildlife Center, Peru

We will mention some of the best ways to experience this incredible wildlife while enjoying a visit to the Manu Reserved Zone on several different combination tours of the Manu region. Although many people first feel they need to visit inside Manu National Park to see the wildlife, remember that the animals and plants are not contained and are free to move in and among the surrounding rainforest. This means the entire Manu region is home to impressive amounts of animals and plants.

With the restrictions on lodge placement etc. in the reserved zone, some of the best wildlife sightings are actually located just outside the park boundary, for example in the Amarakaeri Reserved Zone of the Manu region. This area is home to giant otter filled lakes, tapir licks, and some of the most attractive clay licks for colorful macaw parrots. Here we will mention both these areas, tours to visit the Manu reserved zone and Amarakaeri area, and provide some wildlife and species lists of both areas to give you an idea of diversity.

Manu Tented Camp on the Manu Explorer from Cusco

The reserved zone around Manu covers around 260,000 hectares and is visited by a much smaller amount of tourists compared to the nearby Amazon reserve of Tambopata . Manu is also the most biodiverse protected area but is further away from the gateway town of Puerto Maldonado. In addition to the reserved zone, the Manu region and tropical forest extends to the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve, which is located just across the Madre de Dios River from Manu National Park and connected to Manu by continuous tropical forest.

Although less protected than Manu National Park , as wildlife is free to cross between these areas, it means similar levels of animals and plants are found in areas of Amarakaeri closest to Manu National Park and the reserved zone. Amarakaeri contains all the favorite animals to find in Manu, such as giant otters, jaguar, several species of macaws, spider monkeys, spectacled bears, and many more.

Manu Tented Camp, Manu National Park

The species lists from two lodges located in the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve and the Manu National Park Reserved Zone seem to indicate a similar species composition, but with a higher level of amphibians and reptiles to find in Manu National Park. However, your chances of seeing larger wildlife, such as giant otters, jaguar, macaws, and tapir will be higher at the Manu Wildlife Center in the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve, a lodge regarded by Condé Nast Traveler as “the most intense wildlife experience in Amazonia.”

The Manu Adventurer

Currently, TourTheTropics.com cannot help you book this experience. However, you can visit the tour operator's website for more information.

In addition to visits to Manu Wildlife Center, you can combine the lodge with visits to the Manu Reserved Zone at Manu Tented Camp, as given restrictions of the reserved zone, tourists can only visit the reserved zone for a few days making visits only possible on combination programs with another nearby lodge. Given the incredible wildlife and location of Manu Wildlife Center, this makes a great combination tour.

Established by the same people who wrote the park policies for Manu National Park, at Manu Wildlife Center you can see tapir, giant amazon otters, and have access to an active and large macaw clay lick. The program to combine both the Manu Reserved Zone and Manu Wildlife Center is the Manu Adventurer tour mentioned above, but you can also combine Manu National Park on other programs.

As the Manu National Park Reserved Zone requires a combination visit, a great way to experience the area is to combine a cloud forest lodge in the Manu region from Cusco, journey down from Andes to Amazon to visit the Manu Wildlife Center, and then combine with the Manu Reserved Zone on either the Manu Explorer program or the Manu Macaws & Tapir program.

The Manu Explorer

Both of these package tours begin from Cusco in Peru and combine the Cock of the Rock Lodge, Manu Wildlife Center, and the Manu Tented Camp. The Cock of the Rock Lodge is located in Manu’s Cloud Forest and is a great place to see capuchin monkeys, hummingbirds, orchids, spectacled bears and the bright red cock of the rock, which is Peru’s national bird.

Differences in wildlife.

Here are some differences in diversity between the Cock of the Rock Lodge (Manu Cloud Forest), Manu Wildlife Center (Amarakaeri Communal Reserve), and Manu Tented Camp (Manu National Park).

Capybaras at Manu Wildlife Center

The chances of seeing larger wildlife is higher at the Manu Wildlife Center due to the easily accessed clay licks, which is where the larger animals are more easily found. To give an idea on other wildlife differences, here are some general examples of diversity for the three areas:

  • Manu National Park • 142
  • Manu Wildlife Center • 119
  • Cock of the Rock Lodge • 62
  • Manu National Park • 599
  • Manu Wildlife Center • 574
  • Cock of the Rock Lodge • 561
  • Manu National Park • 86
  • Cock of the Rock Lodge • 32
  • Manu Wildlife Center • 22
  • Manu National Park • 82
  • Manu Wildlife Center • 19
  • Cock of the Rock Lodge • 2

Lodges for the Manu Region

The above programs are focused on the following three lodges and include a visit to the Manu Tented Camp inside the reserved zone of Manu National Park:

Manu Tented Camp Manu Tented Camp is a low impact lodge built in the reserved zone of Manu National Park and is located near Cocha Salvador, a great lake to find giant otters and other Amazon Rainforest wildlife.

Tapir at the Manu Wildlife Center on the Bio Trip from Cusco

Manu Wildlife Center Regarded by Condé Nast Traveler as “the most intense wildlife experience in Amazonia,” from Manu Wildlife Center you can visit the large macaw clay lick, tapir clay lick, and find giant river otters in the nearby lake. You will also enjoy guided tours in the surrounding rainforest to find many different animals and plants, including a diversity of monkeys like squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, capuchins, titi monkeys, marmosets and tamarins.

The Manu Wildlife Center

Cock of the Rock Lodge Located near the display ground of Peru’s national bird, the Cock of the Rock Lodge provides a great place to experience one of the world’s most threatened environments. Tour Peru’s cloud forest to find different wildlife, including hummingbirds, capuchins, orchids, bromeliads, spectacled bears, and the cock of the rock.

Parque Manu Peru Tour Details

Our six day Parque Manu Peru Tour is one of the popular Manu Reserved Zone Tours from Cusco. Led by an English speaking local tour guide, you will be getting a deeper insight into life in the pristine areas of the Amazon Rainforest.

This Cusco Manu National Park Tour takes you deep into Manu Biosphere Reserve. You will have plenty of opportunities to spot animals, birds and get an insight to the life of locals living here.

In 1987, Manu National Park got its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site . This is a popular destination in the Peruvian Amazon due to its close proximity to Cusco and also because it is home to many amazon wildlife.

Manu National Park is among the major conservation units in the world. It is also the largest tropical jungle in the Americas. Manu preserves a complete virgin watershed that constitutes a tropical lowland forest at some 300 meters.

Manu is also home to the elfin and cloud forest on the eastern slope of the Andes that reaches up to the grasslands in Pauna at 4000 meters above sea level.

Our six days Cusco Manu National Park Tour offers a deeper insight into wildlife conservation and Amazonian traditions. You will get to see different species of birds, harpy eagles, different species of butterflies, animals, and mammals like giant river otters. Most of them are distinct to the region in South America.

Cusco Manu National Park Tour Itinerary

Day 1 cusco - pilcopata town.

At 04:00 AM, we will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco. We will be driving you to Nincamarca. It is a small Andean town and home to funeral tombs of Lupaca civilization. Here our local guide will be explaining the significance of these tombs.

We will then be driving you to Paucartambo. It is a folkloric town where people are untouched by modernity and have preserved their age-old traditions. There is a beautiful colonial church in the town.

From here, we will be driving up the hill to Tres Cruces (Three Crosses). It is a viewpoint at 3900 meters above sea level. You will get a captivating view of the Amazon basin from here.

Then we will be descending to Manu Cloud Forest. In the afternoon, we will be touring the forest. On this tour, you will be able to spot the Peruvian National bird – Andean Cock of the rock. You will also be able to spot quetzals, different breeds of monkeys and if luck favors, the only spectacled bear of the continent, Tremarctos Ornatus.

In the evening, we will be reaching our jungle lodge in Manu National Park where you will be accommodated in an ensuite room.

Day 2 Pilcopata Town - Boca Manu

We will be serving you a typical Amazonian breakfast. We will then embark on an hour and a half bus ride to the boat pier in Atalaya. It is 500 meters above sea level. On the way, we will be stopping at a viewpoint to relish a panoramic view of the Amazon Rainforest.

At Atalaya boat pier, we will be embarking on a motorized boat for a short ride on Alto Madre de Dios river. On this short boat ride, on the Manu river, you will be able to spot Kingfishers, herons, black caimans, and some 13 different species of monkeys.

We will have a brief stop at the hot springs of Manu also known as Aguas Calientes. Then we will be continuing to our Amazon jungle lodge in the Cultural Zone. Here, we will be accommodating you in an ensuite room. Once you are settled in, we will be serving you a typical Amazonian meal for lunch.

After lunch, you can have a siesta. Later in the evening, we will be walking through the jungle. On this tour, we will be visiting the tapir lick and other nocturnal animals. We will also spot distinct spiders and snakes.

We will then return to the lodge for dinner.

Day 3 Boca Manu - Macaw Clay Lick - Casa Matsiguenka Lodge

We will be leaving the lodge quite early in the morning to see the Macaw Clay lick Manu. This is one of the unmissable sights.  As the name suggests, Macaw Clay lick is a process where over a dozen colorful birds (Macaws) fly to lick the clay.

The clay here is known  to contain a distinct type of salt which helps Macaws with their digestive system.

We will then return to the lodge for breakfast. Then we will be traveling through the Madre de Dios river. On this boat ride, you will be able to spot turtles, white alligators, jaguars, capybaras and more. We will then have a brief stop at the control (Puesto de vigilancia Limonal) where we will be registering the names of the visitors.

Then we will be reaching Casa Matsiguenka Lodge later in the afternoon. The lodge is more rustic and has a cozy ambience and it nestles deep in the Manu Biosphere Reserve. The lodge is managed by the indigenous community of Matsiguenka community. They are the real caretakers of Manu Wildlife.

There are many trails around the lodge where the Matsigenka guide the tour. We will be visiting an observation tower along the Otorongo Oxbow Lake. You will be able to see many giant otters from here. On this tour, the guide will be explaining to you the life of the people in Amazon.

We will then return to the lodge for dinner. Optionally, after dinner we can give you a night safari where you will be able to spot some distinct nocturnal creatures.

Day 4 Casa Matsiguenka Lodge

Deep in the Peruvian Amazon!

We will start the day by exploring more of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. After breakfast, we will be walking through the virgin rainforest for an hour. Here you will be able to see many different Amazon wildlife like tapirs, peccaries, coatis etc. You will also be able to spot different birds and learn about medicinal plants and flowers.

We will be having lunch in the jungle. Then we will be traveling in a catamaran on Salvador and Otorongo Lake and spot the Amazonian Jaguar (Panthera Onca), river otters, giant otters and black and white caiman.

Then we will return to Matsiguenka lodge for dinner.

Day 5 Casa Matsiguenka Lodge - Boca Manu

After breakfast, we will check out from Casa Matsiguenka lodge and embark on a boat ride on the Madre de Dios river to Boca Manu.

On our way, we will be able to spot jaguars on the shores. We will stop at Diamante Native Community. Here our local experts will introduce you to their culture and tradition. They are popular for handicrafts.

We will then continue the ride to Dorado Lodge. Our crew will serve a local delicacy for lunch. After lunch, we will walk around the lodge.

In the evening, we will set up a bonfire and have some drinks and barbecue. This will be followed by dinner.

Day 6 Boca Manu - Atalaya Port - Cusco

We will be serving you breakfast early in the morning. Then we will be checking out from the lodge and take the boat back to Atalaya port. Our representative will be picking you up from here and will be driving you back to Cusco. We will be reaching Cusco between 07:00 and 08:00 PM.

Manu Reserved Zone 7 days, A Journey to the Deeper Part of the Amazon Jungle!

Manu Reserved Zone 7 days–If an authentic exotic and tropical landscape figures big in your travel dreams. so Manu probably the most famous national park in Peru is the answer. Covering nearly a million hectares, Manu National Park & Biosphere Reserve is the second-largest protected area in the country and one of the largest in South America. and it’s one of the best places in South America to see a stunning variety of tropical wildlife.

Progressive in its emphasis on preservation, Unesco declared Manu a Biosphere Reserve in 1977 and a World Natural Heritage Site in 1987. One reason the park is so successful in preserving such a large tract of virgin jungle and its wildlife is that it’s remote and relatively inaccessible to people, and therefore has not been exploited by rubber tappers, loggers, oil companies or hunters.

Remote Manu, about as close as you’re likely to come to virgin rainforest anywhere. It’s incredibly varied habitats include Andes highlands, cloud forests, and lowland tropical rainforests . One hectare (2 1/2 acres) of forest in Manu could have 10 times the number of species of trees found in a hectare of temperate forest in Europe or North America, and Manu has the highest bird, mammal, and plant diversity of any park on the planet. The reserve is one of the world’s finest for birding (greater even than all of Costa Rica); other wildlife includes giant river otters, cocks-of-the-rock, and perhaps 15,000 animal species, as well as native Amerindian tribes that remain untouched by the modern world. The reserve zone contains the lower Manu River, the Río Alto Madre de Dios, and a number of beautiful oxbow lakes. About 1,000 bird species — about a quarter of all birds known in South America and 10% of all species in the world — and more than 200 species of mammals have been identified. Also found in the park are at least 13 endangered wildlife species, including black caimans, giant river otters, and ocelots. Botanists have claimed that Manu has a greater number of plant species than any other protected area on earth–Manu Reserved Zone 7 days

We Explore Farther… All the Way to the Amazon Jungle Pristine

Many Amazon Jungle itinerary options exist, and they are all different. In holding our focus on the most prolific wildlife destinations, we head far upstream to the confluence of two major tributaries, the Madre de Dios and the Manu, which, comprise the headwaters of the world’s largest water artery. On foot and by boat, we explore the Manu National Park that encompasses the most pristine part of the Amazon region in searching for abundant and diverse wildlife. You won’t find a more remote rainforest experience like this, it’ll be an experience of a lifetime.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: cusco – manu cloud forest - bamboo lodge.

The following itinerary is only a sample, which can vary depending on the availability of the local lodges.

4:30 am pick up at your hotel in our private minivan. We travel through mountains and valleys and through picturesque Andean farms and villages to the “chulpas” of Ninamarca (a Pre-Incan Archeological Site of small tower like graves), later we pass through the quaint colonial town of Paucartambo (the folkloric Capital of Cusco). Then we ascend to Acjanaco pass 4,000m (13,123 ft) the entrance to Manu National Park. Then, descending through the cloud forest we will pass through different altitudes hosting different zones of flora and fauna. Here we begin to see the variety of wildlife and vegetation unsurpassed in the world: orchids, begonias, lichens and misty shrubs and gargantuan trees, incredible birdlife like quetzals, trogons, tangaras, toucans and Peru’s beautiful national bird the Cock of the Rock (Rupícola Peruviana). We might also see one or more of the 14 types of monkeys living in the forest, most likely the wooly, howler and capuchin. All meals included, except breakfast.

Overnight in Bamboo Lodge.

DAY 2: Bamboo Lodge – Romero Lodge

After breakfast, we’ll visit the surrounding Amazonian orchard full of morning bird life and discover local medicinal plants. We’ll also see a real coca plantation. Continuing in the minivan, we’ll reach the port of Atalaya where we can make the last minute purchases and board our motorized river boat. After about 2 hours in the open waters of Alto Madre De Dios River, with stop offs for wildlife viewing and lunch on the banks. We’ll reach Robles Ecological Reserve in the afternoon, where you can swim in the river and in the evening we offer a night jungle walk to see nocturnal creatures like frogs, insects (tarantulas!) snakes and more.

Overnight will be in our private Hide (a camouflaged stilted house in the middle of the jungle) where you can experience the sights and sounds of this amazing area in the solitude of the trees. Strategically located nearby is a salt like for mammals and when we take turns taking guard, we can all be awake to witness night animals like tapirs, deer, armadillos, paca (wild pigs) and monkeys that visit to nourish themselves on the mineral rich clay.

DAY 3: Romero Lodge - Casa Machiguenga Lodge

After our amazing night at the Hide, we’ll wake up early hike back through the jungle to take up watch on the river bank opposite the salt lick. With good conditions, we’ll be able to see parakeets, Green parrots, splendid macaws, and even Otters rolling past for their morning dose of nutrient rich clay.

Breakfast will be made using local  goods from the forest. With the jungle all around us, we will take a hike through the canopy in search of turtles and poison dart frogs, and listen to and watch for any of the 5 species of monkeys that live in the area. Birds are abundant – our walk will be lauded by toucans, macaws, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and many other birds that you won’t see in other parts of the world.

Overnight at Romero Lodge

DAY 4: Casa Machiguenga Lodge - Cocha Salvador – Cocha Otorongo (oxbow lakes)

5:00 AM starts our river boat trip toward the Manu Reserved Zone, a natural Paradise! We’ll have breakfast onboard so we use every minute to spot wildlife along. After about 4 hours traveling downstream we arrive where Boca Manu River changes course, travelling upstream to Rio Manu (Manu River) we’ll have the best chance to spot the elusive jaguar, foraging capybaras, and dozing of caimans along the river’s banks; a multitude of birds: egrets and great herons fishing, macaws with their dazzling colors, toucans, eagles, and more (your guide will help you spot them!) Wildlife is unpredictable but with so much here, we’ll definitely have a super day!

Overnight at the rustic Casa Machiguenga Lodge.

DAY 5: Casa Machiguenga Lodge – Pantiacolla Lodge

Leaving very early to board wooden catamarans at Salvador Oxbow Lake, where giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), a plethora of birds including the prehistoric hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazín), and 14 kinds of monkeys inhabit the at this place and on the trees. As we are deep in the jungle we have more chances to spot the wildlife.

Lunch break, we’ll then visit Otorongo Oxbow Lake, We’ll climb the a big tower to see the lake where we can spot bunch of giant otters frolicking there, black caimans crossing from one side to the other or basking in the sun. At night, we’ll have an excursion as the place offers a rich nocturnal wildlife, which is a perfect time to spot the nocturnal creatures.

Last night in the Manu Reserve zone at Casa Machiguenga Lodge.

What Makes Us Different!… Here’s, Why You Should Book With Us!

Making a choice of your right travel company/ tour operator is the most important decision you will make as you make your plans for a long-anticipated dreamed adventure. At first glance, some companies may seem cheaper. However, when you research a little deeper, you will see why traveling with Peru Summit Adventures assures that you will have the most memorable travel experience possible. In fact, we guarantee it, our TripAdvisor reviews say that.

Making genuine and sustainable itineraries often translate to real costs, with a host of responsible travel practices that underpin our prices, here are the reasons why you should go with us!

1. We Focus on Details

2. our safety record is flawless, 3. knowledge and expertise, 4. the smallest groups en route “manu reserved zone 7 days” – averaging just 4 travelers, 5. we deliver on our promises.

manu reserve zone tours

6. The Best Fare For The Best Trip

7. you book, you go…don’t worry… we won’t cancel, 8. we are local entrepreneurs, a family enterprise (we are not a gringo company).

Probably you will see that most of the tour operators mention it on their websites that are local tour companies, however, if you research a little deeper you will find out that’s not true, they might be although half of the operation is done from here and another half abroad, they even have NorthAmerican phone number or European phone numbers, which is a clue to find out, we are not against the foreigner companies or half foreign companies, what we are against is that they lie.

9. Responsible Travel

Be a responsible traveller! Let’s make this world a better place for everyone and for everyone that lives in it!  The natural environments that we travel to are fragile and abundant with beautiful culture and traditions that are often reliant on tourism. We have a responsibility as travelers to minimize the impact of our presence, protect what is delicate, and leave a positive influence everywhere we can.

As a locally owned and based Peruvian tour company, we integrate these practices into our in-country operations we are aiming for a style of travel that makes the world a better place for everyone, and for everyone that lives in it. Since our very first days as a tour operator, responsible business has been at the heart of what we do. Peru Summit Adventures is committed not just to treading lightly, but to making a real difference by helping and investing in local communities, education initiatives, environmental conservation projects. These values are not more than just words, they are ingrained in the culture and philosophy of our crew, daily operations of Peru Summit Adventures trips, and at our office too.

The length of the trip

Due to the time it takes to access Manu National Park, trips to this region are generally a minimum of 4 days, but extended trips of 15 days or more are not uncommon. So for wildlife spotting which is better, Manu National Park vs Tambopata? Experts generally agree that due to its remoteness, slightly increased bio-diversity and microclimates, Manu is probably the better region to visit. However, both regions have their pros and cons, and both regions are some of the best in the world.

It really depends on what you are looking to achieve from your visit. Manu Reserved Zone Tour 7 Days / 6 Nights

The Manu Reserved Zone 7 days Biosphere is one of the Amazon’s most pristine rainforest areas, encompassing the entire Manu River drainage basin. The park has few human settlements and no hunting or fishing. Tourism is strictly regulated, and visitors are only permitted to enter the park if accompanied by a registered guide and a registered tour operator. Tours must be booked in advance, and all of the agencies have offices in Cusco.

Tours can also be organized from Lima or elsewhere, though all operators must work with one of the ten official operators permitted into the park. It is possible to visit the Manu area without entering the reserved zone, and there is a lot to see. Outside the park, however, there is less control over human activity.

The Manu Biosphere Park is divided into two zones: the Manu National Park, which is only accessible to professional biologists with a special permit, and the Manu Reserved Zone, which is only accessible to tourists on an organized tour.

There are buffer zones around the park, often referred to as the Cultural Zone, but this area is not officially protected. The Manu National Park encompasses 1,532,860 hectares, with the Manu Reserved Zone covering an additional 260,000 hectares. Manu Reserved Zone contains 13 different ecological zones with altitudes ranging from 200m to 4,000m, resulting in an incredible variety of flora and fauna.

In 2000, nearly 3,000 people visited the Manu reserved zone, compared to 20,000 people who visited the Puerto Maldonado area. Although there are no official visitor limits, the cost of visiting Manu means that numbers are self-limiting. Furthermore, agencies are strictly controlled and are only permitted to visit certain areas of the reserved zone for three days at a time.

Tours to the Manu reserved zone are expensive, with prices ranging from about $500 for the cheapest, taking the bus in and out, to nearly $2,000 for staying in one of the lodges.

The reason for this is that transportation costs are high due to the long distances involved. However, discounts on official prices are sometimes available. If an agency has a tour leaving in a day or two and there are still spaces available, it may be willing to offer a discount to fill a spot. If this is the case, it may be worthwhile to shop around.

Tour Location: Manu Reserved Zone 7 Days – It is located in the Manu river basin, Cusco and Madre de Dios regions, Peru Type of tour: Trekking with nature tour, animal sightings Recommended: For those who enjoy nature and want to see different types of animals in the Peruvian jungle. Difficulty: For all Season: April 15 to December 15. Considerations: Permit is required for access to Manu reserve (AltitudExperience will book it for you). It is necessary to reserve it in advance.

Important Information / Manu National Park Peru

Getting to cusco:.

All international passengers by plane must disembark in Lima and pass through Customs because the airport in Cusco is currently only for local flights. You must pick up your luggage in Lima and then check them back in, even if your trip from there to Cusco is on the same day and with the same airline.

The best way to go to Cusco is by plane, and there are many airlines to choose from. Although LAN generally offers the most options and flights, it is also the most expensive. Be prepared for flight delays or cancellations.

Weather in Cusco:

Of course, the weather is erratic. In Cusco, the dry season typically lasts from April through October, but be prepared because it can rain in June or get sunny in December.

Please make sure you have rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves, no matter what month you are taking the journey.

Consider the four seasons as well. You should be prepared for all four seasons as many of the climbs over the Andes entail numerous microclimates.

Always wear layers since they make it simple to adapt to changing temperatures. Please be ready with a heavy, winter-weight jacket because evenings will always be chilly.

Luggage Storage:

Your luggage allowance is still restricted owing to railway regulations even if this is an overnight train vacation. To be transported to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu), all bags must fit in a carry-on.

While you trek, you can leave any additional luggage in Cusco at your hotel or with us at the AltitudExperience Peru deposit. On the morning of your tour, we will collect from you and return after you have reached Cusco. Make sure your baggage are identified in some way so they can be found easily.

Altitude in Cusco & Manu National Park:

People begin to worry about altitude sickness as soon as they reserve their trip to Peru, specifically Cusco. Because there is less oxygen in the air at high altitudes than at sea level, your body must work harder to obtain oxygen. Your body becomes accustomed to the lower oxygen content of the air over a period of days at a high altitude.

This is why we always advise staying in Cusco for at least two days before to starting any hike. It would be ideal if you had more time. You won’t get bored in Cusco because it is a fantastic city with lots to do.

These symptoms will typically be modest. Always ease into action gradually to give your body time to acclimate. Drink a lot of liquids, such as coca tea or water. Since ancient times, coca tea has been used to help avoid altitude sickness.

Coca plant leaves contain alkaloids that help your body get more oxygen into your blood and stave off altitude sickness. A lot of alcohol and caffeine should be avoided. They’ll make you urinate more frequently and dehydrate you. Don’t smoke.

Your body has a harder time getting oxygen when you smoke. Don’t use sleeping medicines. Your body may have a harder time absorbing oxygen when you sleep as a result of their potential for shallow breathing at night.

Keep in mind that the journey to Machu Picchu is not a race. When people rush to the mountain’s summit too rapidly, even those in the best form will experience altitude sickness. Your body will have more time to become used to the mountain if you move gently.

To assist prevent altitude sickness, your doctor may recommend medications like acetazolamide and dexamethasone. Two days before you travel to a high altitude, begin taking the medication. While you are at a high altitude, keep taking it.

You must keep in mind that this is your vacation and that worrying about becoming sick is unnecessary. Drink plenty of water, move slowly, and take pleasure in the coca tea. In the unfortunate event that something goes wrong and you become ill, inform your guide right away. All ALTITUDEXPERIENCE guides have received training on how to assist you in navigating it.

All briefings take place at our office starting at 6:30 p.m. You must arrange a different time with a member of the ALTITUDEXPERIENCE office staff if you are unable to make this appointment. Briefings last between 30 and 45 minutes. Your duffel bags will be delivered here.

One of the few businesses that will pick you up from your hotel is ALTITUDEXPERIENCE. We’ll schedule this pickup depending on a time that your guide will discuss at the briefing as long as your accommodation is in the heart of Cusco City. Depending on the amount of traffic and the period between pickups, pick-up times may vary by 30 to 45 minutes.

The alleys and alleyways in Cusco’s historic center are cobblestoned. Small accommodations like Air BNBs and hotels are frequently found on impassable streets.

AltitudExperience guide has completed a physician-led first aid course. Every February, we hold a training session that is required for all ALTITUDE guides. When guiding you, they’ll have oxygen and a first aid pack for common medical emergencies including traveler’s diarrhea and cuts and scrapes.

In the event that anything unforeseen occurs and you feel you are unable to finish the walk, they will plan the fastest and safest route off the trail to a clinic. You won’t ever be on your own; a team member will accompany you at all times until you reach a doctor in a safe location. We’ll make sure you still have the opportunity to see Machu Picchu and get back in touch with your group when you’re feeling up to it.

Environmental Impact:

AltitudExperience carries all of our trash back to Cusco and uses biodegradable soap. Our staff are taught to maintain the trail and collect any trash left by other groups. Additionally, we employ chemical portable restrooms that allow us to pack trash out. Leaving no trace is something we highly support.

DAY 8: PTO. MALDONADO – Cusco

After breakfast, we’ll travel back to Cusco or Lima. You can choose to go by public bus (8h, included) or plane (45min, not included). Be aware that this depends on the time of year. Also, arrival time in Cusco depends on the itinerary of the airline/bus.

Our first objective is our commitment to the ENVIRONMENT.

As a Manu Park Tour Operator, we feel that it is our responsibility to keep Peru pristine and beautiful for future generations. On our tours, we do everything we can to ensure we leave as little impact as possible. We educate our tourists to be respectful of the JUNGLE. We don't leave any trash in the jungle, instead it is collected and bright back to Cusco to be disposed of properly. As much as possible, we use recyclable, reuseable, environmentally friendly products and solar panel electricity in our lodges.

Our second objective is to give you a REAL JUNGLE EXPERIENCE,

Something different from all the other trips in Manu, something authentic. To achieve this, we camp using tents and hammocks in all our trips so that you are close to nature.
