Where is the Sahara Desert in Morocco?

The Sahara Desert , located in North Africa, is the world’s largest hot desert and the third largest desert behind Antarctica and the Arctic, which are unsurprisingly cold deserts.

The Sahara Desert stretches from the African country of Morocco to the Red Sea in Egypt and to the transitional Sahel in the south, covering an every changing area of around 3,320,000 square miles 8,600,000 square kilometers.

Most of this area is hamada , a type of flat and stony desert, which has its own beauty and fascination. In the case of the ergs, the surface is sand brought down from the Ziz and Rheris rivers, which creates the huge golden sand dunes in Morocco that people that people visit for a desert adventure.

Neither erg is technically in the Sahara desert, but they are regarded as the gateway to the Sahara, which lies a bit to the south. Historically, camel trains would leave from the ergs for the trans-Saharan trade route.

The former Spanish Sahara territory, now known as Western Sahara , is claimed by Morocco as part of its territory and referred to within Morocco as the ‘Southern Provinces’.

This area is most definitely part of the Sahara, but there’s not much in the way of big dunes and some countries may advise their citizens against traveling to the Western Sahara because of security risks. The majority of safety concerns are related to unexploded landmines and potential aggressive theft and harassment.

Erg Chebbi is the most accessible dune field, with a paved road into Merzouga , the small town at its foot. Erg Chebbi rises to 160m at its ever-changing highest point and is 110km square. That’s a lot of sand!

Erg Chigaga takes a little more effort to cover the unpaved track 56km from M’Hamid . Erg Chigaga though, is less untouched and more spectacular, standing 300m tall and spreading over an awe-inspiring 600 square kilometers.

When to Visit Morocco’s Sahara Desert

For a great experience, we recommend you book Sahara Morocco desert trips and tours in advance where possible. You will probably have no issue if you’re heading to the desert in the winter months, but spring and autumn can get busy, and the best guides will get booked early.

The best time for visiting the Sahara Desert in Morocco is between October and May . Daytime temperatures are mild and it will generally be dry with humidity as low as 10%, with sandstorms more frequent from January .

During the Moroccan winter, especially between  December  and early  February , you can expect cold nights, sometimes below freezing. Those taking a desert tour in Morocco during the winter months will need to wrap up warm.

The Sahara Desert weather is harsh in the summer months. June to September can be unbearably hot with July and August daytime highs often crossing 50°c or 122°f. Many campsites close and desert tours in Morocco do not take place during these months.

How to visit erg chebbi.

If the mystery and stark beauty of the desert is calling as you tour Morocco, then the Erg Chebbi dunes are your easiest option for a Morocco desert tour. Believe it or not, it is possible to fly from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert !

Travel to Erg Chebbi Independently

If you are road-tripping in Morocco, it would be a missed opportunity not to visit the popular Erg Chebbi sand dunes. From Marrakech, it will take you around nine hours of solid driving to get to Merzouga, the most accessible of the desert towns.

Getting to Merzouga

Head over the notorious Tizi n’ Tickha pass, a road that has been under construction since the French left Morocco in 1956. Whether it’s ever actually been finished and is now being upgraded is anyone’s guess, but the chances of you finding roadworks and un-sealed  piste  is highly likely.

Your scenic drive will take you across the snow-capped mountains of the High Atlas and through the lush green valleys and oasis of southern Morocco.

Break up the long drive and stop at Ait Ben Haddou (sometimes Ait Benhaddou) in the province of Ouarzazate en route and spend a few hours with a local guide in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has famously been a film set for  Lawrence of Arabia , Gladiator and Game of Thrones amongst others.

The protected mud redbrick  ksar  sits on the edge of the Oued Ounilla and is a fascinating place to learn from Berber guides about their way of life and unique customs and culture, and the role of Ait Ben Haddou as a significant caravan stop on the trans-Saharan trade route, which linked sub-Saharan Africa to the Mediterranean world.

Stay at the superb  Maison d’hôtes Dar El Haja , an authentic guest house inside the ancient ksar , where you will experience traditional Moroccan hospitality and food.

Arriving in Merzouga

It’s a good idea to book your hotel before getting to Merzouga, or you will be pounced on when you arrive, and literally herded by the first hotelier to get to you. Accommodation is big business here and most hotels have look-outs strategically placed on the road into town.

We recommend you stay at Kasbah Kanz Erremal  for stylish and spotlessly clean rooms with a fabulous pool overlooking the dunes. The hotel can also arrange desert excursions for you.

If you’re planning on camping or you’re traveling in an overland truck or motorhome, we think the best option is  Haven Le Chance  in Hassilabied just outside Merzouga, where you’ll have direct access to the dunes.

Booking Your Tour in Merzouga

Many, if not all of the hotels in Merzouga, can organize one night desert tours and desert safaris and your perfect Sahara tour can easily be tailored by the entrepreneurial guides of Erg Chebbi.

You can spend a few hours or a day in the desert in a 4WD or a couple of hours  camel trekking  (technically dromedary trekking and it’s really hard work!), followed by a tajine, traditional music, and stargazing deep in the desert before sleeping under a Berber rug in a Morocco desert camp.

If you have enough time, you can also take cultural tours, hunt for fossils, take mint tea and lunch with a Berber family, and try your hand at sandboarding in the Sahara, a fun way to experience the desert.

When you arrive, if you haven’t already booked your Morocco Sahara Desert tour, your hotel reception will call their favored guide, who will pay you a visit on your first day to share their tours and offers with you. Be clear about what you are looking for and haggle on the price.

Some guides will pick you up from the hotel and do the bare minimum, taking you around in circles on a sunset camel ride for an hour in the Erg Chebbi sand dunes (which all look the same!) before depositing you at a Berber desert camp 100m from the back gate of your lodgings. If truly getting away from it is important, then stress this and insist on a camp deep in the Merzouga desert.

Faux (fake)  guides who are not registered are rife across northern Africa and the desert towns of Morocco are no different. But many of these guides have a wealth of knowledge and can often speak lots of different languages picked up over the years, even though they may not be certified in any way.

Don’t dismiss  faux  guides out of hand, especially if they are recommended or suggested by your hotel as they usually have lots of local knowledge and can offer good value.

Types of Camps in Erg Chebbi

The basic overnight desert camp offer is pretty well…. basic, with no hot water and shared toilets. You will have a private tent and the beds are comfy but it will be cold at night between December and early February, such is the Sahara Desert Morocco weather.

Other than an outside fire, there is no heating (or indeed other frills) in the Berber tents. There may not be much choice in terms of food, which is likely to be Morrocan salad, some type of tajine (a slow-cooked savory stew cooked in a distinctly shaped earthenware pot) and locally made bread.

There will be live music with singing and traditional instruments being played around the campfire after dinner, with your hosts ready to answer all your questions about Berber life in the desert.

A luxury camp in the desert of Morocco will have an improved dinner offer, a private bathroom, heating, and hot water. When organizing such a tour, haggle hard and aim to knock off 20-30% of the original asking price.

white tents in a desert with lanterns lighting a path to them

Take an Organised Tour to Erg Chebbi

If you’re flying into Morocco and want a desert trip from your base, the major cities of Marrakech or Fes are the only viable places from which to do this. There are no one day trips or day tours to the ergs – you’ll need at least a few days spare, due to the large distance and long journey involved.

When you’re searching for Sahara Desert trips, you may see day trips being offered. These are to the Agafay Desert, an hour away from Marrakech. This desert is made up of dry and arid hills and does not have the majesty (or dunes) of the Ergs.

However, this Agafay Desert full day desert and mountain tour with a camel safari makes a good alternative if you don’t have much time

When you’re searching for Morocco desert tours from Marrakech or Fez, accept that you will have little control over who’s in your group (unless you take a private luxury tour) or where you’ll be taken outside of the key visits.

Carpet shops and Argan oil co-operatives will feature somewhere, even if you’re clear that you’re not looking to buy. The Berber sales skills are such that they ignore protestations, in absolute confidence that you will make a purchase!

The Best Marrakech to Merzouga Sahara Desert Safari

This  Marrakech to Merzouga 3 day Sahara Desert tour  is one of the best Marrakech tours and has received over 4,000 reviews on Get Your Guide and scores 4.5 out of 5.

Having taken this group tour ourselves, it is our recommended choice of budget tour from a reputable tour company and covers all the key attractions and activities for your desert trip, as well as offering great value for money.

On this three-day tour, you’ll discover the gates of the Sahara Desert at Ouarzazate, ride in camel train across the Erg Chebbi dunes, spend two nights at different Bedouin camps, visit the famous Dadès Gorge, Todra Gorge, and the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou as well as driving over the incredible Tizi n’Tichka pass across the High Atlas Mountains.

The Best Fes to Merzouga Desert Tour

This small group two day desert  tour with a return to Fes or Marrakech is a great option from a highly rated and popular provider and is the best way of cutting the cost of traveling between Fes and Marrakech and seeing the Sahara Desert at the same time. What’s not to like?

On this 2-day tour, you’ll travel through the Middle Atlas Mountains and the gorgeous Ziz Valley on the route south, seeing monkeys, dramatic rock formations, and miles of palm groves. In Rissani, you’ll take an off-road drive to Merzouga and then a camel ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi and your overnight desert shelter.

The Best Private Atlas Mountains & Desert Tour

If you’re looking for a private tour, this highly rated 4 day private Atlas Mountains and desert guided tour from Marrakech covers all the high points between the city and desert as described above, but you’ll be in a premium vehicle with just you and the other members of your party.

You’ll also get to visit the beautiful Valley of Roses at Skoura, the palm groves at Tinghr and Rissani for a fossil workshop. You will spend one night in a nomadic tent, one night in a local guest house, and one night in a hotel.

Your guide will be able to speak a number of languages including English, and he will drive you and your travel companions expertly and safely through Morocco, sharing history, tips, and information as you go.

Other Moroccan Sahara Desert Tours

There are lots of other options depending on your location, budget, and timeframe. We have chosen a selection of our favorite Sahara Desert tours below.

Visiting Erg Chigaga

More spectacular, more remote, and more breathtaking than Erg Chebbi, the Moroccan desert at Erg Chigaga (sometimes spelled Chegega) is the largest sand sea in Morocco, and it’s totally off the beaten track.

Travel to Erg Chigaga Independently

If you’re not traveling in a 4WD or overland vehicle, Erg Chigaga will remain unreachable unless you hire a specialist vehicle or hop on a camel from the nearest desert town… for five days !

Arriving in M’Hamid

But before you get on your camel, or hit the 4×4 trail, get yourself to the frontier town of M’Hamid and plan your desert tour to the heart of the Sahara in Morocco, some 56km west of town.

You won’t find any modern hotels in M’Hamid. Instead, stay at  Dar M’Hamid , a charmingly traditional Moroccan guest house, where you will receive wonderful hospitality.

Booking Your Tour to Erg Chigaga

There are plenty of local tour operators in M’Hamid. Your hotel can recommend someone or you can stop by one of the agencies in the small town to make arrangements.

Expect to pay around 700-800MAD a day for a five day camel trek (not including food and drink for the journey) to Erg Chigaga and around 1500-1750MAD per day including insurance to hire a 4WD and guide.

Semi-permanent desert camps are scattered amongst the beautiful sand dunes at Erg Chigaga, you can stay here for around 400-500MAD for a night. These camps in the middle of the desert are pretty basic but you’ll find an incredible night sky with views of the Milky Way with zero light pollution and absolute peace.

If you do decide to organize the long trek by dromedary to the deep desert of Erg Chigaga, make sure of the following;

  • Get a couple of prices to make sure you’re not being ripped off.
  • Do you like and trust your guide? This can make or break such a trip.
  • How long do you want to spend on a camel? If you’re not used to riding one, you’ll get seriously sore after just a few hours.
  • Don’t plan to spend too long in the desert, once you’ve done the soul-searching meditation thing, the desert sand can get a little boring!
  • Make sure the arrangements are clear and you understand what you’re getting for your money before you hand over any cash.

white truck driving through the sandy desert

Take an Organised Tour to Erg Chigaga

If you can’t get to Erg Chigaga yourself, then organized Marrakech desert tours can get you there and provide all the activities and attractions you want in an easy-to-manage bundle.

These tours to Erg Chigaga are only available from Marrakech and the choice is limited. The programming is similar to the tours at Erg Chebbi but you will spend longer getting there, although the reward is the ultra-tranquillity and peace you will experience.

Sahara Desert Morocco FAQs

Is there sahara desert in morocco.

Technically no, there is no Sahara Desert in Morocco. But both Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga are regarded as gateways to the Sahara, which lies a bit further south.

Is it worth going to the Sahara Desert in Morocco?

Absolutely. Every time we visit we are blown away by the majesty of the dunes, the raw nature, and the unforgiving environment.

What city is near the Sahara Desert in Morocco?

The nearest city to Erg Chebbi is Errachidia, about two hours north. In fact, Royal Air Maroc has five direct flights every week to Errachidia from Casablanca, and flying and hiring a car to drive to Merzouga is a great way to explore this region of Morocco.

The closest city to Erg Chigaga is the lively Zagora. It takes around 90 minutes to drive from Zagora to M’Hamid, across sandy roads and through small villages.

What to wear in the Sahara Desert Morocco?

Loose clothes that cover you up are a must. The sun can be fierce year round and protecting your skin makes sense. The sand gets everywhere, as sand does, and loose clothing allows it to find its way back to the desert, as well as keeping you cool.

You may also want closed-toe shoes, a sun hat and a lightweight scarf called a  shemagh  in Arabic, to protect your face from the sun and sand. You can ignore all our advice but this: wear long pants for camel riding. Not shorts or a dress as you’ll be rubbed raw. Don’t say we didn’t tell you!

Is the Sahara Desert in Morocco safe?

The good news is that the Sahara Desert in Morocco is very safe. Guides are kind and courteous and you’ll receive a warm welcome wherever you stay.

5 BEST Sahara Desert Tours from Fes, Morocco

I loved every bit of the journey – The endless roadtrip, the stunning views, the nature vibe, the lovely people and the experience as a whole. Literally every place we went to was full of surprises! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – TOUR REVIEW

Anyone seeking an immersive Sahara Desert experience. This 4-day tour from Fes to Marrakesh offers thrilling 4×4 desert tours, camel trekking, and a chance to stay in a traditional nomad tent, with an entire day spent in and around the Sahara.

What to Expect While You’re in the Sahara

A man holds the harness attached to the camel which is one of the best Sahara desert attractions.

Each of these Sahara desert tours from Fes has a very similar itinerary when you’re actually in the dunes. To save you time reading the same descriptions for each tour over and over, let me give you a full description here.

You’ll meet your desert camp hosts in Merzouga (the village right on the edge of the dunes) in the evening, usually a couple hours before sunset. Then, you’ll head off into the Erg Chebbi dunes (the name of the specific dunes in Morocco), riding a camel into the Sahara.

It will take about 1.5 hours to reach your camp on the other side of the Erg Chebbi dunes. There, you’ll witness the sunset either in the middle of the dunes or right at the camp.

When you arrive at camp, you’ll enjoy a delicious hot dinner – this dinner will be as good as any Moroccan meal you’ve eaten! An appetizing breakfast will be served in the morning too.

After dinner, your Berber guides will make a fire and play traditional music around the flames. Definitely don’t miss observing the stars in the middle of the dunes!

Finally, you’ll spend the night in your luxury desert tent. These are not your usual camping tents – they are well-designed, sturdy, and roomy tents, and sometimes have en-suite bathrooms, with running water, a bathroom, and electricity.

Important Things to Know Before You Book

➡️ my top tip for choosing a sahara desert tour.

My big tip for choosing a Sahara Desert tour is to dedicate a complete day to embracing the wonders of the Sahara Desert. Although an overnight stay can provide a remarkable experience on its own, if you are investing the time and effort to reach the desert, why not extend your stay and fully immerse yourself?

We loved our full day in the desert, and I’d recommend it to anyone who can make it work in their schedule.

The 4-day tour I listed above (#5 on the list) and the 3 day tour starting and ending in Fes (#2 on the list) both give you a full day to explore and play in the desert.

➡️ Booking Your Tour in Advance vs Booking in Fes

You do have the option to wait until you are actually in Fes to find a tour operator in the city (it won’t be hard, there are lots around) and haggle for the most affordable price there.

But it’s important to know that there are advantages and disadvantages to this. Obviously, you can certainly get a tour for a lower price when you’re haggling in Fes than booking online.

However, it also comes with some disadvantages. Online tour companies are much more committed to giving quality experiences to tourists since they are looking forward to receiving positive reviews.

The ones you’ll find in the city won’t care that much because they don’t rely on reviews for new travelers to book them, and your travel experience can really be affected by this.

In particular, if you are a solo female traveler, I would definitely book your Sahara desert tour from Fes online ahead of time, as there have been multiple reports of women being hassled by their guides on tours like these.

For such a bucket list experience, I think it’s worth making sure you get a great desert adventure.

A woman smiling at a dinner table in a glamping campground in the Sahara desert.

➡️ Small Group Tour vs Private Tour

This one is really down to personal preference. It’s really up to you and what’s available for the itinerary you want. For example, I could only find a private tour available for a 3-day tour (not 2 or 4 days).

I used to totally avoid any kind of group tour (after an experience in Cozueml where us and 500 other people were shuffled through the streets), I’ve come to really appreciate and enjoy a quality small group tour.

We’ve now gone on a lot of small group tours in many countries we’ve visited, and the result has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve enjoyed connecting with fellow travelers from different corners of the world, and these interactions have often become highlights of our journeys.

Embracing the company of like-minded adventurers has brought an unexpected and delightful dimension to our travels.

What to Pack for the Sahara Desert

Headscarf:  Beyond making you look very authentic, Moroccan headscarves are very helpful to protect your head from the sun, wind, and sand. You can get one in any marketplace in Morocco for around 50 dirhams ($5) – plus it makes a great souvenir from Morocco to bring home with you.

Your desert guides will help you tie the scarf in their traditional style.

Dress, kaftan or djallaba : Kaftan and djallabas are traditional Moroccan clothing (long “dress”-like outfits that both men and women wear) and are a great thing to pick up if you want to look SUPER legit in the desert.

Matthew is wearing a kaftan in our camel pictures and he looks absolutely bomb. (Wear shorts underneath and then hike up the kaftan a little bit – it wasn’t hard for him to sit on the camel wearing that outfit).

Jacket : The Sahara can get chilly at night, even after a hot day. I’d plan to bring a light jacket if you’re visiting during the spring or summer. However, nights get downright cold during the winter, (lows in the 30’s and 40’s) so I’d bring a heavier coat and possibly other winter gear (hat, gloves).

Sunscreen : No explanation necessary, but definitely don’t forget it. Matthew always uses  this sunscreen stick , and I wear this facial  sunscreen for sensitive skin  under my makeup.

Something for motion sickness : No matter what tour you take out to the Sahara, you’re going to have to ride on the winding roads of Morocco. These roads made me suuuuuuuuper nauseous (I actually  threw up out the window  as we were going through switchbacks in the Atlas Mountains).

All that to say, I’d highly recommend something for motion sickness.

While  dramamine  is a tried and true option, I recently tried out the  Relief Band for motion sickness  and it has worked impressively well!

You wear this device like a watch on your wrist, and it sends out little pulses of electricity to stimulate your vagus nerve. You’ll feel just a little buzz in your wrist and hand (its nothing like getting shocked), and is extremely effective.

An E-Sim Card: I like having fast, high speed data when we’re traveling out of the country, and I recently found a new service that for getting inexpensive data while traveling.

Instead of purchasing a local SIM card when arriving in a country, I’m now using an e-sim card from Airalo. I’ve used a lot of different methods in the past to get data when traveling internationally, and let me tell you, buying an e-sim card is EASILY the most affordable, fast, and convenient option.

Sahara Desert Tours FAQs

A man and woman stand together romantically in a sunset on a Sahara desert

Can You Do A Day Trip to the Sahara Desert from Fes?

It takes 8-9 hours to reach Merzouga from Fes, so it’s not possible to do a day trip to the Sahara desert from Fes. You’ll for sure need 2 days minimum to do an ideal desert tour.

Don’t worry, the extra time is definitely worth it!

What is the Best Month to Visit the Sahara?

As one would expect, the Sahara Desert can become scorching hot during the summer months. From May to September, temperatures soar into the mid-90s to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (35-40 degrees Celsius), with nighttime lows ranging from 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit (20-25 degrees Celsius).

In winter, highs generally hover in the 60s-70s Fahrenheit (15-20 degrees Celsius), while lows drop to the low 40s Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius). If you plan to visit during this season, it’s essential to pack warm coats, cozy pajamas, a beanie, and gloves, as the tents lack heating facilities.

Undeniably, the optimal time to explore the Sahara desert is during the spring and fall when temperatures are more moderate and the heat is less intense. Nonetheless, regardless of the time of year, you can still have an incredible experience in the Sahara desert, as long as you come prepared for the prevailing weather conditions.

Is It Worth Going to the Sahara Desert?

Without a doubt, the answer is a resounding yes! Including a visit to the Sahara desert in your Morocco itinerary is unquestionably worth the time and effort you’ll spend. This surreal and epic bucket list adventure will be one you never forget!

The Wrap Up: Sahara Desert Tours from Fes

All of these tours are incredible adventures with welcoming and knowledgeable guides, so it’s really just a matter of choosing which option works for your itinerary. Include one of these excursions out to the Sahara desert as part of your visit to Fes !

Reviews talk!

The best morocco desert tours.

“We are really pleased to have worked with them. We received excellent guidance for our excursion. Lblar and Hassan always provide unique and pleasant service. They have demonstrated exceptional professionalism and efficiency in their job. Everything that was agreed upon was carried out exactly as anticipated. Without a doubt, I will return to discuss with you during our next holiday.”

Clean accommodations!

“All of the locations are breathtaking. It's a thousand times better! All of the personnel engaged in the Morocco Desert Tours organization provided excellent service! Everything was fantastic! Professional, well-organized, and meticulous in every aspect. Hassan, our extremely pleasant and knowledgable guide, was there for us at all times, even after the tour was over. Excellent accomodation and meals. Definitely recommended!”

Morocco in 5 days!

“We took a five journey across the Merzouga desert from Marrakech to Fes, and it was an incredible experience. We were fortunate to spend those days with Mohamed, the driver, a Merzouga local. Who contributed to the authenticity of our journey. We've been able to observe how the Berber people live since he has patiently answered all of our questions. We were devastated to have to say good-by to him. We would absolutely recommend it to anybody planning a trip to Morocco. ”

Thanks Hassan and Lblar!

“An amazing adventure. We first met Youssef, who made our holiday unforgettable. Our adventure from Tangier to Marrakech began with a drive over the desert dunes with our wonderful guide Said. The desert was our objective, and we hallucinated, especially when reclining beneath the stars in the middle of the desert, and we observed a lot of Moroccan beauty from north to south. Thank you, Lblar and Bouwltof; you are an amazing family who have taught us about another country, customs, and way of life.”

We love Unique Desert Tour!

“We only had a few days and were unable to complete the three-day, two-night desert adventure. They gave us the option of doing only one night, picking us up in Fes, taking us to the desert, and then taking us to Marrakech the next day. Hamid, our private guide, did an excellent job of taking us to several locations and explaining many things. Laughing and displaying a keen interest in studying a variety of languages (he already speaks half a dozen!). Without a doubt, this is an experience that should not be missed! We'll spend more nights in the desert the next time! Feel free to contact Unique Desert Tour for Morocco desert Tours.”

Morocco Camel Trekking

“The fact is that the vacation exceeded my expectations. We began contacting Unique Desert Tour and scheduled a vacation. With impeccable timeliness and a lot of support from Mohamed the driver, a very cheerful Berber lad, always with a smile, very competent driver and a good desert aficionado. It's amazing how young nomads adapt to various languages and learn alongside others. A very long but magnificent trip to visit Fez, the cultural capital, Dades, the Gorges of Todra, and conclude in Chefchaouen, the blue city, with two young and extremely knowledgeable guides who taught us about their cities and Islamism. It is recommended for Morocco Desert Tours.”

Top locations to visit with Unique Desert Tour

Morocco Desert Tours will take you to numerous gorgeous sites and amazing activities. As a result, we’ve included them below so you can get a sense of where you’re going.

Marrakech was established in 1071 by the Almoravid dynasty’s ruler Youssef Ibn Tachfin. That is to say, because of Almoravids were a particularly devout people, the city of Marrakech saw fit to erect several mosques with minarets in its streets during the time. In addition to pointing to the sky, there are Koranic schools that teach future imams. Parallel to the development of religious structures. Also, many of the city’s craftspeople arrived from Cordoba or Seville, Spain, during this time period. The city was created with monuments that are today synonymous with Marrakech, including the red ramparts and different city gates.

In the hands of Almohads:

The Almohads took control of the city in the eleventh century. From the High Atlas, who exterminated the Almoravids and demolished their many constructions. The renowned Koutoubia mosque from this time still stands in Marrakech. Furthermore, the strength of its external construction elevates it to one of the most stunning Moroccan representations of Moorish art. At the same period, the Bab Agnaou gate was built.

Following the Almohade dynasty, numerous peoples succeeded one another at the helm of the red city. For many years, Marrakech was ignored. Marrakech would not regain its splendor until the sixteenth century, following the capture of the city by the Saadians. The majestic El Badi Palace, located in the Mellah neighborhood, is still one of the most attractive sights to see in the ochre city. Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur Dhahbi constructed it to commemorate his army’s victory over the Portuguese adversary at the “Battle of the Three Kings.” This effectively put an end to Portugal’s aspirations to conquer Morocco. You also think that the Saadians’ tomb dated from this epoch…

During the Alaouites power:

As the Alaouites seize control from the Saadians, the city of Marrakech will lose appeal to these people, who will instead pick Meknes as their imperial capital. It will therefore take until 1912 and the French protectorate for the city to evolve again, with the appearance of the new district of Guéliz. Companies and banks have their headquarters in this neighborhood. The city government, as well as prominent luxury brands and retail boutiques. There are also numerous global eateries and legendary cafés there.

Marrakech is not just a popular tourist destination, but it is also the starting place for our Unique Desert Tour Morocco Tours.

Fez’s history is intertwined with the history of Morocco, as it is the country’s first Muslim metropolis. For a long time, the capital was a competitor to Marrakech, Meknes, or Rabat. Today. Fez is the country’s spiritual capital.

Foundation of Fez:

This region was inhabited by Berbers prior to the advent of the Arabs. It is also after. The Arabs, then, are city inhabitants, but the Berbers are more rural.

Fez was founded in 788 by Idriss ben Abdellah, the founder of the first Muslim dynasty in the Maghreb, the Idrissides.

The chosen location will be at a crossroads where multiple trade routes intersect:

– From the south (Sijilmissa and Mali) to the north (Ports of Tangier and Ceuta). – East (Marrakech) and west (Tlemcen, Tunis, and further on Cairo and Mecca or Damascus).

The river Oued Fez and gushing springs flourish in the future Fez. Furthermore, the surrounds are excellent for agricultural production and include building resources like as stone, clay, and wood from the Middle Atlas Mountains.

Families banished from Cordoba (now Spain) and Kairouan (now Tunisia) progressively inhabit both banks of the river, resulting in two distinct cities:

  • The Karouanais bank is on the right bank.
  • The Andalusians’ bank on the left bank (little tourist today).

Fatima el Fihriya, a Kairouanese aristocrat, founded the Quaraouiyine mosque in 859. Furthermore, it will be the first Muslim university in the world, maybe even before Bologna in Italy. The Al-Andalus mosque is situated on the opposite bank.

The banks are united in a walled enclosure (1069) with the Almoravides dynasty: the modern Medina of Fez.

Under the Almohad rigorists, the city grew and became an important intellectual center.

The Golden Age of Fez:

The emergence of the new Merinid dynasty is a watershed moment.

In 1276, Abu Youssef chose to abandon the Kasbah Nouar in the Medina and create a new neighborhood farther west: Fez la Blanche, la Neuve, or Fez El Jedid in Arabic.

A palace was constructed, the region was home to troops (the Mellah), and residential sections were soon fortified. The increased power was not universally welcomed by the populace. As a result, it was critical not to take any chances.

Several measures were taken to reduce the opposition of the population:

Sumptuous colleges (Medersa) were established in Medina to erode the religious influence of major mosques opposed to the government. Poor students from all around the realm come to train under the sultan’s lavish sponsorship. They will grow into appreciative and loyal citizens and civil servants. The discovery of the grave of the founder, Idriss ben Abdellah, is a good cause to relocate the Jews from Medina to the ancient Mellah fortress. 1 stone, 2 blows: The new holy site will be kept safe from unbelievers. Above important, the monarch will divide the influence of Fez’s merchants by keeping the Jews under his command.

It is the golden era of Fez, and the Christians’ reconquest of Granada draws the Muslims into the city, bringing with them their know-how as a legacy.

Fez will become a storehouse of Arab-Andalusian culture, particularly in architecture, music, and gastronomy.

The decline of Fez:

  • Fez deteriorated under the Ouattassides (or Wattassides), and in 1522, the city was devastated by a devastating earthquake.
  • The Saadians chose Marrakech as their capital, and erected the El Badi Palace there. The new monarchy will encircle Fez with castles because it is distrustful of the populace.
  • For a while, Fez was the capital under the Alaouites. Then it’s Meknes’ turn for a while. Many independence rebellions spring out under French protectorate, challenging the sultan’s power: Rabat becomes the new capital, safer.

Fes is one of the highlights of our Unique Desert Tour Morocco tours. From this cultural city, you can start your journey towards the Sahara desert or to any destination in general.

Merzouga is most likely the greatest and most memorable of our Morocco vacation sites. A metropolis that appears to be floating in nothingness, remote from everything and everyone, and enveloped in a dreamlike stillness. Merzouga is a desert stretch in the Sahara. Crossing its dunes is a lively experience, one not to be missed on your Morocco holiday.

Sahara is an Arabic term that means “loneliness,” but viewing some Moroccan landscapes gives you a sense of anything but solitude. On the contrary, there are locations where the spirit and heart may be filled. Merzouga is among them. Seeing the sun rise and set among the sand dunes is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The tallest dunes in the Sahara desert, some of which are over a hundred meters high, may be found in this beautiful location. Merzouga’s dunes, known as Erg Chebbi, are located in the southeast of Morocco.

The region is made up of a small cluster of dwellings divided by two streets: one that runs from the desert to Rissani and one where tourists may purchase food from the few businesses that exist. From Merzouga, you may go on some amazing adventures, such as riding a camel or a dromedary across the desert and appreciating the sunrises and sunsets, as well as the starry sky at night. Those who do not enjoy this type of experience. Even more daring is the trip with a 4 x 4 off-road vehicle, during which you may cross the dunes and visit a Berber family when you are tired.

Merzouga and its dunes put up a spectacular performance. The sensation you have in front of this natural wonder is nearly helplessness. The stillness that envelops you, the breeze that caresses your hair, and the sun that warms not only your body but also your heart.

This is Merzouga, a location where you feel alone in the middle of nowhere while still being surrounded by wonderful feelings that only nature can provide. Unlike other regions of the Sahara, the Erg Chebbi is defined by a thirty-kilometer-long cordon of golden dunes. Merzouga’s dunes, which exceed 150 meters in height and dominate the oasis of the same name, are among the tallest.

During the day, the hue of these dunes changes from pink to gold to red. In the winter, you may witness an even more thrilling display. In fact, a tiny lake, the Dayet Srji, emerges among the dunes, attracting hundreds of pink flamingos and storks.

Chefchaouen:

Chefchaouen is a tiny hamlet in northern Morocco’s highlands that offers a magnificent Mediterranean backdrop. It has big legendary whitewashed blue corridors and a genuine and friendly ambiance. This city is a respite for tired travelers, a source of inspiration for photographers, and a treasure for the curious traveller.

We encourage you to explore this unique medina with a sense of nostalgia. This is a historic city where you will be served as much mint tea as marijuana and where you will be able to converse in both French and Spanish. This is a place where you can take your time to relax and experience the cultural variety of northern Morocco.

The Kasbah of Chefchaouen :

The kasbah is one of the primary historical attractions of the medina, and it is accessible via the location Outa el Hammam for a fee of 10 Dh at the entry. It is unlikely to be the most magnificent of the kasbahs you will have the opportunity to visit during your time in Morocco. However, it is still a fascinating landmark to find. Inside these walls, which Rachid Ben Ali constructed in 1471, you will find a lovely garden and a glimpse of an extremely amazing building.

Throughout your Morocco Desert Tours travel, you will find an old jail as well as the ethnological museum of the town of Chefchaouen, which houses a vast collection of folk art and handicrafts from the country’s north. Make sure you don’t leave the premises without going to the top of the kasbah tower, which will provide you with a 360-degree view of the surroundings, particularly the grand mosque.

The gates of the medina :

Chefchaouen is no exception. The Medina is coated in many colors of blue, yet some elements stand out strongly from this magnificent blue. These are the doors. Throughout my time in this city, I was obsessed by the many doors of houses, riads, and shops. They might be a striking and vibrant hue, or they can be neutral with distinctive and glossy handles.

The Spanish Mosque:

We confined ourselves to the Spanish mosque located on the route leading to the Ras-el-Ma waterfall and the kif fields, despite the fact that there is a great range of treks to do in this region of the nation. The Ras-el-Ma water spring is a wonderful spot to take a breather and appreciate the residents’ animation as well as the wilder scenery. In terms of hiking, it is a very pleasant ascent that lasts about 15 minutes. When you arrive at the mosque, you may take some time to rest and enjoy the wonderful view of the city. The show is really stunning!

A Morocco trip with Morocco Desert Tours agency:

If you want to visit Chefchaouen on your trip to Morocco, we recommend that you book a tour with us. Morocco Desert Tours local guides can provide you with a comprehensive exploration of everything this city has to offer.

History of Meknes:

The Inter-Governmental Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization designated Meknes as a World Heritage Site in December 1996.

It is one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. It enjoyed a time of tremendous wealth during the reign of Moulay Ismail, and what remains of this age of grandeur and prior eras makes this city a vital stop on any journey with Morocco Desert Tours. Meknes was chosen as Moulay Ismael’s capital for strategic, political, and geographical reasons. Remember that Louis XIV was the reigning monarch of France at the time. The well-known tale is Moulay Ismael’s marriage proposal to one of Louis XIV’s daughters, which did not take place since the suitor already had three wives. Louis sent him three Comtois clocks, which are still visible in the mausoleum!

In addition to its apparent architectural attraction to even the most casual tourist, the Meknes Kasbah is significant since it represents the Alaouite dynasty’s first great effort. A Moroccan dynasty that has ruled for almost 300 years. The Ismaili Kasbah is an important piece of Moroccan architectural heritage. Its monuments captivate the mind due to their apparent variety as well as their essential uniformity.

On the ornamental plan, a specific number of doors are marked (Bab Mansour Laalej and Bab Errih). Allow entry to a palace, a sub-assembly, or even the entire Kasbah. It is primarily these doors that deserve the moniker “Meknes, capital of magnificent doors.”

Gate of Bab El Mansour:

The city of Meknes was built in the 10th century by the Zenet Meknassa tribe from Morocco’s east. She was drawn to the region by the fertility of the land, the quantity of water, and the beauty of its gardens. This tribe was also responsible for the establishment of the city of Taza. Prior to its construction, there were just a succession of villages with no ramparts that coexisted peacefully in an agricultural existence based on Berber customs.

Building mosques:

The Almoravids fortified the city in the 11th century. In the twelfth century, the Almohads repopulated it and erected mosques and hammams (Moorish baths). Mohammed An-Nasir, the fourth Almohad ruler, renovated the grand mosque and added a mihrab (around 1203). Abu Yusuf constructed a Kasbah, and Meknes became the home of the viziers.

Many monuments were erected by Abu Youssef and Abu El Hassan during the Merinids’ reign in the 13th century. Meknes will really become a Hispano-Maghrebian metropolis under the Merinids.

The cities of the north lost prominence under the Saâdyines’ reign. Meknes did not become the first imperial city until the end of the 17th century, with the arrival of the second Alaouite sultan. Moulay Ismael, the governor at the time, gave it remarkable growth; he wished to make it a magnificent capital. As a result, he made it his permanent home and adorned it with several spectacular structures: opulent palaces, mosques, madrasas (schools) with harmonic ensembles, towering gateways, formidable fortifications, vast gardens, ponds…

Prison of Kara:

Moulay Ismael died in 1727, and his son Moulay Abdellah continued and completed portions of his father’s work. Several monuments were added to Meknes during his rule, which lasted from 1757 until 1790. He constructed mosques, mausoleums, and the Dar Beîda mansion, which is currently home to the Royal Military Academy. The Alaouites have not stopped being king builders to this day, and the Kasbah of Meknes is consequently of great importance.

Meknes now consists of a historic and contemporary city divided by the Boufekrane wadi valley. The new city offers a stunning perspective of the medina, with its numerous minarets, walls, and imperial city.

Casablanca:

Morocco Casablanca sprang established atop the ruins of an ancient city called Anfa. It was significant in Moroccan history toward the end of the seventh century. Also, it is the beginning of the eighth century. Anfa was a rich city with a prosperous agricultural hinterland. It was also a former fishing harbor. Destroyed by Portuguese invasions in the 15th and early 16th centuries. Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah will then rebuild the city in the 18th century (1757-1790). The white city had just a thousand residents at the middle of the nineteenth century.

The city’s port gradually connected it to the rest of the globe. It piqued the curiosity of Europeans, who were motivated by commerce. Then it established itself as the European counter-point of North Africa, and it became Morocco’s first export port.

The port’s traffic is propelled by the advancement of steam navigation and the expansion of the textile industry. Following that, it will become one of the Mediterranean basin’s biggest suppliers of wool.

They established a regular marine route between Marseille and Casablanca in 1862.

The port of Casablanca, the kingdom’s first big modern port, was built in 1912 and boosted the city’s and region’s economic activities. As a result, it drew a large number of investors and workers.

Casablanca, the economical capital city:

It so determined the fate of the little city of Dar al Baida, which grew to become the country’s main economic center, metropolis, and financial capital.

Between 1910 and 1950, the city experiences a prosperous period of establishing large construction sites, including the planning of large avenues, the construction of large buildings, the organization of regular shipping lines… It is also the period of the beginning of the electric car, with the Euro-automobile Rally Casablanca in 1920.

The invasion of the Allies in North Africa in November 1942, particularly the American landing in Casablanca, Operation Torch, which is still fresh in the minds of elderly Casablancais, will be remembered as a watershed moment in the history of the Second World War.

Two months later, at the historic Anfa conference in January 1943, the leaders of the Allied powers (Roosevelt, Churchill, Giraud, and de Gaulle) gathered in Casablanca to plan their post-war strategy.

Casablanca between 1953 and 1965:

Casablanca is a city that stands up against oppression. It was the birthplace of the resistance to the French Protectorate. It was the collective effort of all Casablancais. Great resistance warriors perished. During Sultan Mohamed V’s expulsion by French authorities in 1953-1955, Casablanca the Resistance fighter erupted into flames. When the Sultan returned, the women left their cloister to greet their king.

A great patriotism was restored during the Green March (1975), a nonviolent march, an epic at King Hassan II’s request, to liberate the Sahara from Spanish control. Casablanca had the biggest delegation, with 35,000 volunteers.

The Casablancais were forced to escape to the countryside as a result of the Protectorate, Operation Torch, and the ensuing German reprisal.

The resistance, the Casablancais’ revolt against Sultan Mohamed V’s deportation, and the protest riots of 1965 and 1981 reinforced this population’s unity, establishing a strong commitment to the monarchy, the nation, and the city.

Casablanca was the epicenter of the protectorate’s opposition. The ancient medina, the Habous, Derb Sultan, Derb Al Kabir… were the armed resistance’s districts.

The “fidayeen” fought to restore the country’s political independence. “Al Fidaa,” means “Redemption.”

This nationalist drive lives on through the city’s major arteries, which bear its name. The Bd Al Fida runs through resistance fighters’ neighborhoods. The Bd of Resistance, which is led by Bd Zerktouni (the resistance leader), encircles the whole city.

When it comes to reaching the Sahara Desert from Marrakech, selecting the right transportation option is crucial for a smooth and enjoyable journey. Let’s explore the various choices available:

A. Private or Group Tour:

One popular way to have your Sahara adventure is by joining a private or group tour. These tours offer convenience, expert guidance, and the opportunity to connect with fellow travelers. With a wide range of tour operators available, you can find options tailored to your preferences, whether you’re seeking a luxurious experience or a budget-friendly option.

B. Private Car:

For those looking for flexibility and independence, hiring a private car is an excellent choice. This allows you to set your own pace, make stops along the way, and fully customize your itinerary. Hiring a driver is recommended, as they are familiar with the routes and can provide valuable insights about the region.

If you prefer a quicker and more efficient way to reach the Sahara Desert , flying from Marrakech to nearby airports, such as Zagora or Errachidia, is a viable option. From there, you can arrange ground transportation to continue your journey into the desert. Flying saves time and offers aerial views of Morocco’s diverse landscapes.

D. Rental Car:

Renting a car provides the freedom to explore at your own leisure. Marrakech has several car rental agencies, and you can choose a vehicle that suits your needs and preferences. However, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the driving conditions in Morocco, including the remote desert roads, and ensure you have the necessary documents and insurance coverage.

E. Public Bus:

For budget-conscious travelers, public buses offer an affordable means of transportation. Several bus companies operate routes from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert, such as Rissani and Erfoud or even Merzouga. Although the journey may take longer compared to other options, it allows you to experience the local culture and interact with fellow passengers.

Consider your preferences, travel budget, and the level of comfort you desire when choosing the transportation option that best suits your needs. Each option offers its own advantages, allowing you to tailor your journey to the Sahara Desert according to your preferences.

In the next section, we will delve deeper into each transportation option, providing you with essential details and considerations to help you make an informed decision.

Exploring Routes and Destinations

Route to merzouga:.

If you prefer flexibility and independence, renting a car is a viable option for traveling from Marrakech to Merzouga. Before planning your journey, it’s important to research reputable car rental agencies in Marrakech and compare prices. Ensure that your driving license is valid and familiarize yourself with Moroccan traffic rules. Keep in mind that the drive to Merzouga involves remote desert roads, so plan for enough driving time and be prepared for the unique challenges of desert driving.

For an extraordinary and hassle-free journey, we highly recommend booking a private tour. With professional guides, private transportation, and curated itineraries, these exclusive tours offer a seamless and unforgettable journey. Enjoy the convenience of having accommodations, meals, and activities taken care of, allowing you to immerse yourself in the captivating landscapes and cultural highlights along the way. Embark on a personalized adventure that guarantees comfort, flexibility, and the freedom to create lifelong memories in the magical Sahara Desert.

If you’re on a tight budget, there are budget-friendly desert tours available from Marrakech to Merzouga. These tours often offer shared accommodations and transportation, allowing you to split the costs with other travelers. While the accommodations may be more basic, they still provide a comfortable and authentic desert experience. Take the time to read reviews and compare prices to ensure you find a reputable tour that offers the best value for your money.

For those seeking a more adventurous experience, an independent DIY trip is an option worth considering. With careful planning and research, you can navigate the route to Merzouga on your own. This option allows you to set your own pace, explore lesser-known attractions along the way, and have a more personalized experience. However, be prepared for the additional responsibilities and challenges that come with independent travel, such as arranging accommodations and navigating unfamiliar roads.

Experience Rose Gold Sand Dunes in the Sahara Desert, Morocco

Visiting the Sahara Desert in Morocco is like entering another world. Endless rose gold sand dunes and an atmosphere of tranquility greets you upon arrival. Sunrises, sunsets and stargazing here are some of the most magical on earth – and the heat and horizon may lead to a mirage or two.

I had the pleasure of experiencing this incredible desert on an overnight trip and it totally took my breath away. We arrived at the Sahara Desert in the afternoon, did some dromedary rides while the sun was setting, and then had a Moroccan party that night. Sleeping under the stars in the desert was amazing! The next day we headed back to Marrakech .

This trip was epic and I would love to have the opportunity to share my experiences with you and provide tips for your own Sahara Desert journey. Hopefully, by the end of the article, you will be adding this experience to your bucket list. Before I do all of that, allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Amalia Armendariz. I’m a 23 year old Mexican girl who grew up in a northern city in Mexico. Now, I’m having the time of my life traveling through Europe and Africa on a student exchange program. I have always been amazed and attracted by the wonders that this world offers.

I have always wanted to take adventures to discover new destinations. By following many travelers’ accounts who post their traveling photos, I can take inspiration and plan my own adventures. To be honest, I can’t believe that now I have the privilege of creating my own journeys because I have been wanting to do so for a long time now. It really is a dream come true!

6 Magical Days Exploring Morocco

My inspiration to visit Morocco came from my friends who had gone on their student exchange program and who traveled to Morocco. I told myself that one day I would also go visit. When I arrived in Europe, I started looking for ways to travel to Morocco. In the end, I went there for 6 days and 5 nights and in that time we visited a few different places along the way.

I traveled to Marrakech, visited a few different destinations near the incredible High Atlas Mountains, went to the enchanting Ait Benhaddou in the city of Ouarzazate (this was the setting for the Game of Thrones series and The Gladiator movie), and of course I visited the Sahara Desert too.

In these places we had the chance to explore local markets, try typical Moroccan cuisine and tea, take some amazing photos of the unbelievably unique landscapes, walk through beautiful little villages, ride on dromedaries (they aren’t camels), celebrate a Moroccan party in the Sahara Desert and even go paragliding (not part of the tour but I did it anyway).

Sahara Desert

Touring with Viaje en Marruecos

I went with a tour company called Viaje en Marruecos and I absolutely recommend them. They are the best in the world. Viaje en Marruecos made us feel welcomed, the service was amazing throughout, they even partied with us and had everything ready. It was the perfect experience.

We were a big group and still they made each of us feel so looked after. They provided us with all of the transport for our trip including to and from the airport, booked all the hotels (including the big tents in the Sahara Desert), sorted out all of our tours, provided breakfast for us everyday, and also two dinners (at the hotel in Ouarzazate and a buffet in the Sahara).

They also offered us free WiFi in the buses that we took to the different places. All in all, my experience with Viaje en Marruecos was just awesome and I highly recommend this company if you are looking for a tour agency.

Sahara Desert

First Impressions of the Sahara Desert

When I first arrived in the Sahara Desert in Morocco I was so amazed that I couldn’t actually believe what I was experiencing. To see the beautiful colors of the rolling sand dunes, to feel the soft sand on my feet and to ride dromedaries while venturing deeper into the desert felt so extraordinary.

I have seen amazing desert scenes in movies and in TV series. When I would watch them, I would get so amazed by the views that I thought it was all made up for that scene (that it wasn’t real). But when I experienced the desert for myself I felt like I was in a movie and couldn’t believe it!

The smile on my face grew bigger and bigger, and I felt so grateful to be living out that moment. When the night came around, I got even more excited as one of my favorite things to do is to stare at the sky to watch the night stars shine. The sky there was perfect and endlessly beautiful.

I had never seen so many stars in my life, nor had I seen a prettier night sky. It was so humbling and I felt tiny compared to the whole galaxy of stars above me. I did my best to take photos but none of them could truly capture the beauty of the starry night sky that I was appreciating. Everything in the Sahara made me feel happy, amazed and grateful.

Sahara Desert

Incredible Activities in the Sahara Desert

When we arrived at the Sahara Desert, the first thing we did was ride dromedaries and venture deep into the desert. Then we got off the dromedaries and appreciated the gorgeous sunset in the desert. Others in our group also participated in sandboarding during the epic golden hour.

Once it started to get dark, we headed back with the dromedaries to where our tents were located. We got back to the tents and everyone was waiting for us ready to celebrate a Moroccan party with batucadas and a campfire. They informed us that we would be enjoying a buffet for dinner and so we kept enjoying the party (a DJ even arrived) while eating delicious food.

Of course, I took advantage of this time to go stargazing and then headed back to the party to keep on celebrating. The next day some people had the chance to stay and do more dune-bashing with a 4×4 jeep or with ATV’s (with an extra fee). But I couldn’t stay, so I returned to Marrakech.

The one activity that stood out for me was the dromedary ride. It just feels amazing, like if you are in a movie. While you are on the dromedary you can admire the huge desert landscape surrounding you. It’s a feeling that you can’t perfectly describe in words because it’s just so epic in real life.

Sahara Desert

Sleeping in Tents in the Sahara Desert

We stayed in some huge tents in the Sahara which had enough space to sleep 7 people. All 7 of us in the tent had access to a bed and they were all equipped with sheets, pillows and blankets (at night it can get cold).

I recommend this type of accommodation for the desert because it was just so comfortable. The travel company Viaje en Marruecos is now building their own hotel named “Sahara Pearl Hotel” which will be even more amazing than the tents where we stayed (also provided by them).

Need to Know Before you Go

  • Book your Sahara Desert experience with a travel agency (Viaje en Marruecos is the best). This way you can also learn from the culture and traditions while you admire everything and have fun while doing so. This amazing tour agency makes things easy and comfortable for you.
  • If you would like to, buy some traditional Moroccan clothes (turban, pants, dresses, etc.) so you can feel more immersed in the culture. This also makes the photos you take look more amazing and authentic!
  • To get the best photo shots, go early and enjoy the desert. Look for places that are high above the ground with not many people around (believe me, the desert is huge and you will find plenty of open spaces).
  • For dromedary photography, give your cellphone to the guys in charge of the animals and they will take some cool, creative photos for you.
  • While you are in the desert, forget about everything and just enjoy what you are experiencing because it’s so amazing. Take good photos but try not to be on your phone/camera too much. You don’t want to miss out on special moments or not take everything in personally.
  • Try to go to the Sahara Desert in the seasons that are not too hot (summer) and not too cold (October and November are still perfect). You want to enjoy the weather while riding the dromedaries.
  • Bring a jacket for the night because it can get very cold in the desert.
  • If you are in two minds about visiting the Sahara Desert in Morocco, stop doubting yourself and just go! You will thank me later for that.

Where is the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is in North Africa. It spans a mighty 9,200,000 square kms across 10 countries, including Morocco, Egypt, Mali and Libya.

It's the world's largest hot desert and third-largest after Antarctica and the Arctic.

What is the weather like in the Sahara Desert?

As a desert region, the Sahara can experience extreme weather. Winter (December to February) can be very cold, with overnight temperatures dropping to 5°C or lower.

You'll need a sleeping bag, thermals, a scarf, gloves and a warm jacket for travel in winter.

Oh, and be prepared for cold showers at your desert camp!

Summer (June to September) can be very hot with intense temperatures that can reach the high 40°Cs. This might be too uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. It's super important to use sun protection and stay hydrated. That said, the desert can still get pretty chilly at night when the sun goes down, so you'll need a fleece to rug up.

Spring (March to May) sees the arrival of strong winds and there is an increased risk of sandstorms in April – but don't worry, your leader will always check the forecast beforehand to see if it's safe to stay in the desert.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara Desert?

The best time to visit the Sahara Desert is during the spring months between March to May, as well as the autumn months of October and November. During these times, the desert temperatures are hot but manageable and the nights don't get quite as cold. However, one thing to note is that between January to May there is usually a higher number of sandstorms recorded, especially in April.

What clothing should I wear in the Sahara Desert?

What to pack will differ slightly depending on the time of year and the activities you'll be doing. But below are the basics you'll need:

  • Light scarf or face mask can be handy for preventing you from inhaling desert dust
  • Sun hat – wide-brimmed, ideally, to protect your face and head from the sun's rays and strong winds
  • Sunscreen – when you're in the desert, it goes without saying!
  • Small daypack for day trips and excursions
  • Light, loose-fitting pants
  • Joggers or jeans for camel rides
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Fleece – for all seasons
  • Warm layers (for winter trips) – you'll need thermals, gloves, a woolly hat and a fleece to rug up as the temperatures can drop to below freezing at night
  • Small head torch – handy for going to the bathroom at night
  • Thongs (flip flops) for camp
  • Hiking shoes or runners

What animals live in the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is one of the fiercest environments for animal life.

A wide range of mammals live in the Sahara, from cheetahs, dromedary camels, desert foxes, gazelles, ostrich, and hyrax to African wild dogs.

Reptile life includes the desert crocodile, sand viper and the desert monitor.

Other common species include the deathstalker scorpion, the Saharan silver ant, and over 90 species of birds.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
