When you’re miles from anywhere, a portable power bank can quickly become your very best friend.

Giving an extra burst of battery life to your cell phone or iPad can keep you amused for longer, or more importantly, ensure that you’re always able to get in touch with the rest of the world.

Size and Weight

Power bank size

Your power bank is designed to be portable, otherwise, what’s the point?! With this in mind, the physical size and weight of it will be major factors in considering which one is right for you.

The charger should be able to fit neatly in the same space as your cell phone; otherwise, you’ll have one in your pocket while carrying the other in your hand — not cool!

Bottom Line: Look for one that will fit neatly in your pocket, purse, or backpack . While power banks should have a sturdy feel about them, they shouldn’t be uncomfortably heavy, so opt for one that’s light enough not to weigh you (or your pockets) down.

Milliamp (mAh)

The power capacity that your power bank kicks out is measured in milliamp-hours or “mAh.” The amount of mAh available will define how much charge you can expect to get out of your power bank.

Common capacity ratings range from 2,000mAh to 20,000mAh and in some cases, even as high as 40,000mAh. To give you a rough idea of how the amount of mAh juice in the bank affects what you can charge and how often, consider the following:

  • An iPhone 7 can be charged approximately 6 times with a 20,000mAh power bank
  • A Samsung Galaxy S8 can be charged approximately 4.5 times with a 20,000mAh power bank
  • An iPad mini can be charged approximately 4 times with a 20,000mAh power bank

Think about what devices you need a power bank for and how long you’ll be away from a power outlet. If you just need something to keep your phone topped up a couple of times a day, a 5,000mAh or 10,000mAh will do the job just fine and it will be physically smaller, too.

Hot Tip: Most airlines will cap power banks at 20,000mAh while some will allow larger. Always check with your airline as to what the maximum capacity requirements are.

Inputs (1A, 2A, or 2.4A)

Power Bank

At some point, your power bank will need charging up to ensure it can provide the backup charge power you need. What you want is a nice, quick recharge speed that means you can get back out there without having to be attached to a wall socket for hours on end.

The input charging speed is dependent on the type of wall charger used. A standard wall charger with a 2A output would recharge the power bank twice as fast as one with only a 1A output. For this to happen, your power bank would need to offer a 2A input.

While some do offer this, many still rely on a 1A input which will take longer to reach a full charge.

Hot Tip: Newer power banks can be charged even more quickly with the addition of a 2.4A input option. Look out for these if you want the fastest charge on the market.

Weighing in at 2.4 pounds and measuring 2.8 x 2.8 x 8.6 inches, it’s too big to fit in your pocket but should fit just fine in a large purse or laptop case. MacBook Pro M3 battery life tested — this blows everything else away

Apple's M3 chip helps these new MacBooks smoke the best Windows laptops

MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 holding in air open

  • M3 Pro battery life vs. MacBooks
  • M3 Pro battery life vs. Windows

Apple has released new MacBook Pros and a new 24-inch iMac powered by its new M3 chip, and now that we've had time to test them ourselves it's clear these are some of the most powerful, longest-lasting Macs yet.

The new Apple M3 chip which drives them is the first slice of Mac silicon fabricated using TSMC's 3-nanometer process, which basically means it's smaller than its predecessors so Apple can cram even more on it, resulting in more speed and better power efficiency.

Now that we've had a chance to put multiple models of the M3 chip to the test during our review process, I'm here to tell you that it helps modern MacBooks deliver new heights of performance while achieving some excellent scores in our battery life test. While we haven't yet had a chance to test the M3 Pro model of either 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook, we have tested the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 and the 16-inch MacBook Pro M3 Max and found they deliver killer battery life across the board.

However, while these new MacBooks smoke even the best Windows laptops when it comes to battery life, they still can't beat the 13-inch MacBook Pro M2. This reigning champ of the best laptops for battery life lasted over 18 hours in our battery life test, which tasks a laptop with endlessly surfing the web via Wi-Fi until it dies.

MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 playing Lies of P with PS5 controller

Now we set every laptop's display to the same (slightly low) 150 nits of brightness for this test, so there's no guarantee you'll get the same amount of time with one of these new MacBooks before it conks out on you — cranking up the brightness, playing games, and doing other common tasks will cause your battery to drain faster than it does in our testing lab.

But don't let that puncture your enthusiasm; we use these laptops extensively ourselves as part of the review process, and I can tell you that great battery life is something you can count on in day-to-day use. I review a lot of laptops here at Tom's Guide, and it feels so nice to be using one that has oodles of battery life because you can carry it around the home, office or classroom all day without having to worry about plugging in to charge.

Some of my favorite Windows laptops only last around 8-10 hours in our battery test, and while I love them I don't love the low battery warnings I get whenever I leave the charger at home all day or get foolish enough to start playing games on one unplugged. So even though you may not get the full 17+ hours of use out of one of these new MacBooks, I think you'll appreciate the extra security and peace of mind you enjoy when watching the battery life indicator take ages to diminish.

To show you what I mean, let's take a quick tour of our battery test results.

MacBook Pro M3 battery life vs. MacBooks

Apple's MacBooks have been leading the market in battery life since they started coming with Apple silicon onboard, so it's not hugely surprising that the new M3 MacBooks we've tested aren't the longest-lived MacBooks ever.

As you can see from the results below, that honor still belongs to the MacBook Pro 16-inch (2023) with an M2 Max chip onboard. That beast of a machine lasted nearly 19 hours in our battery life test, followed closely by the MacBook Pro 13-inch M2 with its 18+ hours of battery life.

However, now that the 13-inch MacBook Pro is discontinued it's fitting that the MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 is the new second-place finisher for best battery life in a MacBook, since it's effectively replacing the old 13-inch Pro.

MacBook Pro M3 battery life vs. competing laptops

When I add in a selection of the latest Windows laptops and compare the new M3-powered MacBooks against the battery life of laptops in general, however, you start to see how good they really are.

As you can see from the broader chart of our testing results below, the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 lasts nearly twice as long as competing Windows ultraportables like the Dell XPS 15 OLED (2023) . The only Windows laptops we've reviewed that can compete are special cases like the Panasonic Toughbook 40 , a briefcase-sized rugged laptop for first responders that has built-in battery packs no ultraportable can match.

As you can see, the M3 chip gives the latest generation of Apple's Pro-grade MacBooks some stellar battery life. While they can't beat the best MacBooks for battery life, they clearly demonstrate that Apple continues to put Intel and AMD to shame when it comes to portable PC power efficiency.

But while Apple's the undisputed king of laptop battery life in 2023, things could change by 2024. Intel is under the gun to improve the performance and power efficiency of its chips, which is probably why the company is chasing Apple and AMD by embracing a "chiplet" design for its upcoming 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs.

When the first Intel Meteor Lake CPUs debut in December they could bring some serious competition to Apple's M3 MacBooks with their all-new CPU/GPU/NPU design, which incorporates a built-in "AI" engine just like Apple's Neural Engine. Part of this AI engine's job is to dynamically optimize battery life for the next generation of Windows laptops, so perhaps they'll have a shot at dethroning Apple's MacBooks in 2024. Stay tuned!

About Maxlife

Sure, we may be cheaper than others, but, let us tell you a secret. Our batteries also last longer than a number of well-known brands. We won’t drop names. You probably know who they are.

It was a few years ago that we decided you were all paying way too much for batteries. So, from our converted Kumeu apple shed, ka-boom! We launched MaxLife batteries so you can max up your life!

Our Battery Performance

Even back in the early days (we’ve been around since 2007) we would get our batteries independently tested to ensure we were delivering a quality product and real performance. Some of our testing claims, which were entirely accurate, prompted a giant battery company to threaten us with legal action.

Over the last 10 years we’ve refined the formula in our Alkaline battery to match some of the best products on the market. As you can see from the recommendation by Consumer, our Alkaline formula is outstanding. Maxlife is great bang for your buck.

What Size Battery Does My Travel Trailer Need?

The size of your travel trailer battery is crucial, but there's no specific answer to this question. It all depends on the power requirements in your rig, plus the hours you're running each appliance or electronic on board. A larger battery will store and provide more power, and always consider the space and weight carrying capacity you have available.

The amp hour rating of most batteries helps a user estimate the amount of power a battery contains. So, you should first determine the power needed and compare the different options available before making a purchase.

When Is It Time to Replace My Travel Trailer Battery?

If a deep-cycle battery is properly maintained, then it can last for more than six years. However, some RVers replace their RV’s batteries every one or two years. You’ll need to replace your battery if it reads 0 volts, as it can be a sign of a short circuit. If your battery is unable to reach higher than 10.5V when it’s being charged, then it has a dead cell and needs to be replaced.

Lastly, if you have a fully charged RV battery, but have a voltage of 12.5 or less, then it's  sulfated , and it’s better to install a new one.

Adding a Second Battery to a Travel Trailer, How Do I Do it?

When installing a second battery, it’s advisable to choose a model that’s identical to the first one. Make sure the bridge cables are of the same length and are routed through the same path. Link the batteries to each other and make sure you only have one connection to the chassis.

When installing a second battery, it’s advisable to choose a model that’s identical to the first one.

How to Charge a Travel Trailer Battery

Most recreational vehicles come with a charging system for batteries. However, some of them don't deliver good performance. One of the best is the converter charger that has the purpose of converting 120V shore power into 120DC. What's more, you can always charge your battery by employing a generator or a solar panel.

How Long Does it Take to Charge My Travel Trailer Battery?

it really depends on how much it has been used, and the amperage of your onboard charger.  For example, charging at 15 Amp would take 9.6 hours. Similarly, under full sun conditions, using a 100-watt solar panel would take over 28 hours to charge your battery.

I changed these 10 iPhone settings and improved battery life dramatically

selfie

No matter how much you use your iPhone, you've almost certainly thought about how to maximize its battery life. After all, these phones -- particularly the smaller models -- can be more than just a little power-hungry.

Also: iPhone 16: Three changes I want to see on the next Apple handsets

So whether you own one of the latest models or are rocking something from a few years ago, there are quite a few ways to maximize your iPhone's battery life and help it last longer on a charge. Let's break down the 10 best ways to save your iPhone's battery life.

1. Turn off the always-on display

One of the biggest power drainers on the iPhone Pro series is the always-on display. Apple finally added the feature after years of refusing to, and while the company says it'll only sip about 1% per hour, that's still almost a quarter of your battery gone each day while you aren't using your phone.

How to : Head to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display on your iPhone and flip the toggle to off. You'll thank me later.

2. Disable haptic feedback when typing

This is one of those features Android phones have had for years that only recently made it to the iPhone. However, the constant buzz every time you hit a key does lead to excess battery drain, especially if you're like me and are always typing.

How to : Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback on your iPhone and flick the toggle labeled "Haptics" to off. You can also disable sound from the keyboard, which could save a bit of battery life if you live with your iPhone ringer switched on.

Also: iPhone 15 review: I spent a month with Apple's base model and found it more 'Pro' than ever

3. Disable "Hey Siri" detection

If you don't use Siri regularly, chances are you don't need your iPhone to be constantly listening for the "Hey Siri" command. After all, you can just long-press the side button on any modern iPhone to trigger the assistant, freeing up battery power devoted to the voice command detection.

How to : Go to Settings > Siri & Search on your iPhone and tap "Listen for."  From there, choose "Off" and you won't be able to use any of the hotwords to trigger Siri.

4. Reduce the amount of notifications you get

When you get a notification on an iPhone, a million things happen at once. Your display lights up, it plays a sound, it vibrates (if you have that turned on), there's an animation involved -- it's a lot . And if you have a lot of apps installed on your phone, chances are you're getting a lot of notifications every day, likely leading to excess battery drain you didn't even realize was happening. It's best to shut off some of the unnecessary actions not just for the battery life, but also to save yourself from checking your phone every few minutes.

Also:  6 reasons to buy an Apple Watch, according to a wearables expert

How to : Visit the Settings app and scroll down to find the app you want to disable notifications for. Tap on it, then tap "Notifications." There's a primary toggle at the top of the UI that'll let you disable notifications altogether, and there are a number of options below it to tweak how those notifications are delivered, whether it be quietly in the background or simply as banners while you're using your phone. For the best battery life, just disable all the notifications you don't need entirely.

5. Turn off nearby AirDrop sharing

There's a neat feature in iOS 17 that lets you hold two iPhones, Apple Watches, or one of each near each other to instantly share contact information, files, and more with others. It's cool to use from time to time, but keeping the feature turned on can drain your battery since it's constantly on the lookout for other Apple devices to interact with. Granted, battery drain isn't too significant here, but it can be if you're in a public place with lots of other phones around.

How to : Visit Settings > General > AirDrop and turn off "Bringing Devices Together." This won't disable AirDrop altogether, just the nearby sharing feature.

6. Don't use Live Activities

Introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro series and the Dynamic Island, Live Activities can display real-time information from a variety of apps so you don't have to keep the app full-screen. The feature is great for tracking sports scores, Uber ETAs, upload progression on Instagram, and more. As you can imagine, however, Live Activities can drain your battery quickly over time. If you want to squeak out the most battery life possible, it's best to disable this feature.

Also: How to record a call on your iPhone (and check if it's legal in your state)

How to : Go to the Settings app and locate the apps that work with Live Activities. Tap on them, then toggle off "Live Activities" from the list of options. You can also go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and toggle off "Live Activities" so they don't appear on the lock screen.

7. Check the widgets on your lock screen

Speaking of the lock screen, Apple recently allowed users to add widgets to the lock screen in iOS to add some customization and glanceable information. I'll admit, I'm a huge fan of widgets on the lock screen, but not if they're gonna drain my battery. I've seen the weather app, Todoist, and a few other apps drain my battery over time simply because they're constantly updating their information on a screen I only look at occasionally.

How to : Wake up your iPhone and press and hold on the lock screen to enter customization mode. Then, tap "Customize" and choose the lock screen itself. From there, you can remove any widgets that you think are draining your battery in the background. Anything involving constant data retrieval is usually good to get rid of, while others like a calendar or your fitness rings might only drain a fraction of your battery over time.

8. Reduce your refresh rate

If you own a newer iPhone Pro, you've probably noticed how silky smooth the display feels. That's because Apple includes a 120Hz refresh rate on the Pro phones, which makes everything from animations to scrolling feel more responsive. However, this uses more power than a regular 60Hz refresh rate does, so if you want some extra endurance throughout the day, it's best to reduce the refresh rate.

How to : Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion, and turn on "Limit Frame Rate." This will drop the display down to 60Hz.

9. Turn off Background App Refresh

Most apps involve pulling data from the internet to function, and they have to refresh in the background to be ready to show you that information when you tap on them. If an app goes haywire, this can have dire consequences for your iPhone's battery life -- it could be draining while it's just sitting on your desk and you'd have no idea. If you suspect one or more of your apps is draining your battery in the background, you should absolutely turn off Background App Refresh.

Also: iOS 18 wishlist: 5 features I'd like to see Apple bring to the iPhone

How to : Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh on your iPhone. From there, you can tap "Background App Refresh" and toggle it off completely, or stay on the main screen and disable it app-by-app, which is more useful if you know the specific app that's causing your battery to drain.

10. Use Optimized Charging

One of the easiest ways to preserve the life of your iPhone battery's health over time is by using Optimized Charging. It's a feature built into every iPhone that dynamically adjusts charging speeds based on where you are and whether it expects your iPhone will be plugged in for a long time. For example, when you go to sleep and plug your phone in, it'll charge to 80% before slowing down, then trickle power into your phone so it's at 100% when you wake up. It's a much safer alternative than forcing your battery to charge at full speed all the time.

How to : Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and check to make sure it's enabled (it's enabled by default on every iPhone). If you own an iPhone 15 or later, you'll also have the option to cap charging to 80% to preserve your battery's health even longer.

Bonus: Use Low Power Mode

I didn't include Low Power Mode on the primary list because, well, it feels like a bit of a no-brainer whenever someone asks how to save battery life on their iPhone. Still, I'd be remiss not to mention it since, yes, it will absolutely save battery life, as it disables a host of battery-draining features all at once, like background app refresh, fast display refresh rates, fancy animations, and more.

How to : Swipe down from the top right corner to access Control Center on your iPhone, then tap the battery icon. Your battery status indicator will turn yellow and you'll enter Low Power Mode. To turn it off, repeat the same process.

My iPhone 15 Pro Max After 7 Months: Too Many Drops to Count, but Still Great

Commentary: Here's what I learned after living with Apple's 15 Pro Max for over half a year. Spoiler: It's still my daily driver.

max life travel battery

  • Patrick's play The Cowboy is included in the Best American Short Plays 2011-12 anthology. He co-wrote and starred in the short film Baden Krunk that won the Best Wisconsin Short Film award at the Milwaukee Short Film Festival.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro Max has been my daily driver for seven months.

Seven months into using the iPhone 15 Pro Max , one of the biggest surprises -- which, unfortunately, I can confirm through personal experience -- is that it can survive drops. Many, many drops.

It's fallen off the arm of my couch onto my living room hardwood floor multiple times. It dropped from my pocket onto the sidewalk twice as I fumbled to pull it out. And then there were numerous instances where the 15 Pro Max hit the floor of CNET's San Francisco studio during video shoots. I frequently use the iPhone as a teleprompter with an accessory that clips onto a Panasonic S1H camera and lens. Sometimes my camera operator or I will accidentally knock "the rig" while adjusting the Panasonic, which causes the phone to dislodge and smack the ground. Luckily, my 15 Pro Max's screen and back haven't cracked.

Read more: Best iPhone for 2024

And, it's worth noting: I don't use a case. I know, I'm a horrible, soulless monster, but I'm just not a case guy . But, maybe I should be.

Over my seven months with an iPhone 15 Pro Max, I've traveled across the country with it, watched TV and movies on it, played games and even taken it to a surf rock show. It's become my rectangular, half-pound friend that does everything I need it to.

I've become dependent on features like StandBy Mode at home and at the office, Check In during long bike rides, and that incredible 5x zoom on the camera. There have been lows, like the overheating software bug that arrived on iPhones running iOS 17 last fall, but luckily, my phone wasn't affected, and Apple has since resolved the issue .

Here's why, more than half a year later, I'm still glued to my  iPhone 15 Pro Max .

Wear and tear

Let's start with how my iPhone 15 Pro Max looks, especially after all those falls. The titanium sides are in good shape, but there is a small knick on the side of the top-left corner -- no comment! The back glass looks good. My phone is the natural titanium color, or what a friend jokingly calls "not quite beige." But that drab color, along with the matte finish, hides fingerprints and dust quite well. Upon closer inspection, I don't see any marks or scuffs on the back.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max

There are a few hairline scratches on my 15 Pro Max's screen, but nothing bad.

The Ceramic Shield display hasn't fared as well. There are some tiny scratches on it, especially in the lower-left corner, and the oleophobic coating seems to be wearing down in a couple of spots. I am definitely not complaining, especially since I don't baby the phone. But it's nice to see the 15 Pro Max mostly holds up to the everyday Patrick Holland experience.

Battery life and display

Cameras and lenses on the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Samsung S24 Ultra

Here are the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, all close and friendly.

My 15 Pro Max's battery health is normal, though the max capacity has dropped from 100% to 99%. The battery cycle count sits at 111 and my 10-day average for screen-on time is eight hours and 41 minutes. In terms of battery life, not much has changed. It still lasts a full day on a single charge and can get through a day and a half when I'm not using the phone heavily.

There are times, like during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and Samsung Unpacked in January, when I pushed the phone by taking hundreds of photos and videos and calling in for CNET's live video stream over 5G. On days like that, using low-power mode has helped to offset battery drain, but I'm still impressed with how the phone holds up, even in those scenarios. Because the 15 Pro Max has a larger battery than the 15 Pro, it can last noticeably longer.

The iPhone's display looks so good. Whether I'm watching The Bear, reading an article , laughing at New Yorker cartoons or taking a photo, images and graphics are rich and detailed and text is easy to read, even when the brightness is dim.

If you read my iPhone 15 Pro Max vs. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra camera test story, you might know where I'm going next. The 15 Pro Max's screen falls short for me in one way: reflections. After using the Galaxy S24 Ultra and its low-reflection display, I can't unsee the reflective mess that is the iPhone's display -- and the majority of smartphone screens out there. I hope Apple adds the coating, or whatever Samsung is doing, to the rumored  iPhone 16's display .

The iPhone 15 Pro Max and iOS 17

An iPhone with its Standby screen active

StandBy Mode is one of the sleeper hits in iOS 17 and on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Perhaps the biggest change to the phone, besides the camera, is iOS 17 . We are 19 months from when the  Dynamic Island debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max , and it still feels underutilized by third-party apps. Yes, it's great for Uber, music controls and system alerts for Apple's apps, but it feels like there's more that can be done with it. I'm not sure this is on Apple, since the company can't force developers to use the Dynamic Island. But it still feels like it's early days for the Dynamic Island, even though it's not.

We also now have Stolen Device Protection , which protects your accounts and personal information in case your iPhone gets stolen. If you haven't, turn it on. In iOS 17.3 or later, go into Settings , tap Face ID & Passcode and you can enable it there.

In my earlier iPhone 15 Pro check-in , I noted several iOS 17 software bugs I experienced, like having Safari freeze and become unresponsive. I am happy to say I haven't had that issue in months.

And the last thing I'll say about iOS 17 is there are a ton of small improvements which have been lovely, like the Catch Up arrow in Messages. But the feature that I see more people embracing is StandBy mode , which turns the iPhone into a mini-hub when it's charging. StandBy Mode shows widgets, the time or photos and isn't limited to the iPhone 15 series. It's fun being over at a friend's house and seeing them have a stand for their iPhone in the kitchen or home office for StandBy. And I'm curious if and how Apple might expand StandBy Mode in iOS 18 .

Cameras and video

iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro Max has a trio of lenses: wide, ultrawide and 5x telephoto.

Cameras are always a huge deal on the iPhone, and the 15 Pro Max is no different. Essentially, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max both have the same cameras, but the 15 Pro has a 3x telephoto lens and the 15 Pro Max a 5x telephoto lens. It makes me wonder what an iPhone 15 Pro Ultra would have been like with both the 3x and the 5x -- think Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Photos from the 15 Pro Max are great and on par with those from the S24 Ultra and Pixel 8 Pro, especially with that 5x lens! Take a look at the gallery below featuring snaps I took with the phone.

I Took 600+ Photos With the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Look at My Favorites

But I want to give the iPhone's video capabilities a moment to shine. The 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have the ability to record ProRes video and even save files as SDR, HDR and Log. The Log files might look odd: the color is desaturated and the exposure looks dark. The files are designed to capture more image information than a non-ProRes video and be color graded and balanced for exposure later to get the look you want – or match video footage recorded with another camera.

A side-by-side comparison of Apple ProRes Log

On the left is a video from unedited Apple ProRes Log footage. On the right is the same frame after the exposure was balanced and color graded.

In fact, the video that accompanies this article was filmed by CNET's John Kim on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. The main shot of me in the video talking to the camera directly was captured using the 15 Pro Max's 5x camera and recorded in ProRes Log. Here is a before and after composite of the same frame from the video: one unedited the way it looks in Log and the other after it was graded and balanced.

One of my other favorite parts of iPhone 15 Pro Max video capture is being able to record video straight to an external hard drive, thanks to the USB-C port which supports USB 3 speeds. With this method I can quickly transfer videos I shot from the iPhone to my computer for edits by simply unplugging the drive from my iPhone and plugging it into my laptop. I don't have to wait for the videos to upload and download or for them to AirDrop. To make the recording process even better, I use several accessories.

My go-to iPhone 15 Pro Max accessories

The iPhone 15 Pro Max and accessories

From left to right are the Samsung T9 SSD, an iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Peak Design mobile tripod.

I use two main accessories to record footage for CNET videos: the Blackmagic Cam app and a Samsung T9 SSD. Keep in mind for casual videos and social posts, I mostly hold my iPhone and use the default Apple Camera app.

The Blackmagic Cam app is basically the pro camera mode I've wanted from Apple for years. It's just for video, but gives waveforms for balancing exposure, zebras to show where the image's bright parts are clipping to white, controls for shutter speed, ISO and more. I can select different video codecs, audio formats and, heck, there's even a mini-slate! Perhaps my favorite thing about the Blackmagic Cam app is it's free.

The Samsung T9 SDD is both tiny and large. It's about the size of a tin of Altoids, and yet comes with storage configurations up to 4TB. I've used Samsung T drives for years just because of their value and portability. But unlike the previous ones I had, this T9 drive is rugged. Samsung claims it can handle a drop from 9.8 feet. After reading about my propensity for dropping my iPhone, it might come as a surprise to know that I have not tested this claim. The Samsung T9 SSD is $175 for 1TB but at the time I'm writing this,  Best Buy sells it for $130 ($45 off) .

I also want to highlight Peak Design's mobile tripod. It's made of aluminum and has MagSafe-compatible magnets to attach to the back of the iPhone. The tripod's tiny legs fold flat to make it portable. There's even a tiny allen wrench key that magnetically stores in the body to tighten the ball-joint! I keep the mobile tripod in my backpack with me, and it comes in handy all the time not just for recording video, but also for watching them. The Peak Design mobile tripod costs $80 , which is a lot, but it's worth every penny.

Final thoughts

The iPhone 15 Pro Max on a mobile tripod

Here is the iPhone 15 Pro Max on the Peak Design mobile tripod.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max has been my everyday carry for the past 7 months, and that's the best approval I can give a phone. If you're thinking about getting one, I definitely recommend it, and as we get closer to summer, keep an eye out for trade-in deals and sales. Also, I'm going to start shopping around for an iPhone 15 Pro Max phone case .

'Conan O'Brien Must Go' is side-splitting evidence of life beyond late night TV

Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway. Conaco/Max hide caption

Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway.

To be honest, when I first heard Conan O'Brien was ending his TV talk show in 2021, I assumed news that he might turn to variety shows and online programs to continue his career was some combination of face-saving and wishful thinking.

But after watching the four episodes of his new Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , it's now obvious — even to a thickheaded critic like me — that leaving late night TV really was liberating for O'Brien. He's leveraged his unique sensibility into several different podcasts, a deal with Sirius XM , specials featuring other stand-up comics and now this travel series for Max — which resembles jokey specials he did for cable channel TBS back in the day.

And as the late night TV genre crumbles under sagging viewership and the decline of traditional media, O'Brien's renaissance also provides an example for the future — where fertile comedy minds and talented performers can spread their work over a much larger canvas.

Is Conan O'Brien the best 'Hot Ones' guest ever? Discuss.

Pop Culture Happy Hour

Is conan o'brien the best 'hot ones' guest ever discuss., learning a lesson from 'hot ones'.

O'Brien already made a splash recently with his brilliantly maniacal appearance on the interview-while-eating-hot-wings show Hot Ones , slobbering over hot sauces while claiming, as he was checked over by a fake doctor, that "I'm fine! I'm perfectly f*****g fine!"

This is the place where O'Brien shines — he's called it "this strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid" — and it's on full, freakish, super silly display in every episode of Conan O'Brien Must Go .

The conceit of the show is pretty simple. O'Brien heads overseas to visit average folks in Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland who had once Zoomed in to speak with him on the podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan . Sometimes the visits seem like a surprise — he catches one aspiring Norwegian rapper in shorts and Crocs after popping up on his doorstep — and others seem a bit more planned, including his visit to a radio show with about four listeners in Buenos Aires.

Each episode begins with a solemn monologue which sounds like it is delivered by the film world's most eccentric voice, German filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog (he's not credited in the show and when asked, a publicist at Max shared a quote from O'Brien: "I can neither confirm nor deny the voice in question.")

The torturous accent by "Herzog" makes every line sound absurdly hilarious, describing O'Brien as "the defiler ... with dull, tiny eyes ... the eyes of a crudely painted doll ... he scavenges in distant lands, uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition and the occasional selfie."

Now that's smart. And oh so stupid.

A funhouse mirror version of a travel show

O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway Conaco/Max hide caption

O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway

Fans of O'Brien's Conan Without Borders specials on TBS already know what his style is when he tackles a travel show — throwing himself into outrageous reactions and situations while working his quirky brand of improvised conversations with hapless bystanders.

In the Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , that includes O'Brien offering screechy vocals onstage during a performance of a Norwegian emo/rap band. Or asking provocative questions of a couple therapist/sex expert. Or getting beat up in a "fight" with a 10-year-old boy in a bar.

It's all an excuse for O'Brien to unleash his energetic wit, taste for silly absurdity and skill at drawing laughs from sympathetic — if often befuddled — strangers. Whether you enjoy this special will depend on how you feel about O'Brien's style, which can feel a bit like the world's best class clown doing everything possible to make you crack a smile.

(Rent a family in Norway so they can say goodbye when he gets on a SeaCraft? Check. Get local artists to paint a mural of O'Brien, a soccer star and The Pope on the side of a building in Argentina? Double check.)

'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast — Sort Of

'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast — Sort Of

But what amazes in a larger sense is how O'Brien has turned his sensibility into a comedy brand to fuel work on many different platforms. And, at age 60, with more than 30 years as a comedy star, he's been released from the shackles of any genre to shine wherever he chooses — whether it's an episode of Hot Ones or a streaming service which sometimes looks like a collision between True Detective and 90 Day Fiancé .

Leaving late night TV as late night left him

I'm old enough that I started covering TV not long after O'Brien made his first move from the shadows of life as a comedy writer – he worked on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons — to succeed David Letterman in 1993 as host of NBC's show Late Night (now hosted by Seth Meyers). Back then, NBC gave O'Brien years to figure out the show, honing his smartly serious comedy in a way that would inspire then-teenage fans like Seth Rogen and Bill Hader .

O'Brien left NBC after a disastrous deal where the network tried to make him host of its venerated late night program The Tonight Show and also keep its former host Jay Leno at the network. He moved to a late night show on TBS in 2010, but even then, there was a sense that his creativity was a bit hemmed in by the format.

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

By the time he left his TBS show Conan for good, it seemed O'Brien was already caught in a trend which would hobble other late night shows — as young viewers consumed his content online and ratings on cable dropped.

Now, with a podcast and digital media company worth many millions and growing status as a TV comedy legend still willing to do almost anything for a laugh, O'Brien is proving there is a successful life beyond late night.

Particularly, if you have the talent to play the fool while leaving little doubt you're also the smartest person in the room.

Roborock s8 maxv ultra review: better than a roomba in every way.

It cleans floors and itself brilliantly and autonomously

While iRobot's Roomba is the market leader in the US regarding the best robot vacuums , the brand faces fierce competition from Asian manufacturers. Roborock is one of these, as it became the world's leader in the robovac market in 2023. With its new Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra and Roborock S8 Max Ultra, it's poised to conquer the US market.

Both models pack the latest innovations in cleaning technology, making them the best autonomous robot vacuum and mop cleaner combos we've ever tested. Although we've tested both models, we will focus our review on the most capable S8 MaxV Ultra and mention the differences between the S8 Max Ultra where applicable.

max life travel battery

Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is one of the most innovative and effective robot vacuum and mop combos on the market. It features all the top-notch features you can imagine, plus an AI camera and an LDS navigation system. While it may be the best, it's also the most expensive, making it a long-term investment rather than an impulse buy.

  • Outstanding cleaning results
  • Effective AI cleaning methodology
  • Excellent Self-cleaning results
  • Impressive refill and drainage system
  • Dock requires manual maintenance
  • No consumables provided in the box

Price and availability

One of the most expensive robovacs.

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra will start selling on April 22nd at Best Buy, Amazon, and Roborock's web store. In addition, the slightly less capable S8 Max Ultra will be available for $1,600, with a special $200 launch discount on Amazon and the Roborock web store.

Specifications

Design, hardware, what's in the box, mighty size for better cleaning.

The S8 MaxV Ultra and the Max Ultra models are available with either water tanks or a self-draining and refilling option. While the tank versions are available in black and white, the self-draining and refilling ones are only available in white.

Regardless of the variant, all have a powerful dock designed to collect dust from the robovac and wash and dry the mop using hot water and hot air. To achieve this, the dock's lowest part features a high-speed brush that rotates and moves sideways to scrub the mop. The station is also engineered to refill the robot with water and detergent and, therefore, features a dedicated refillable detergent tank. The latter is housed behind a glossy and expensive-looking front pane right next to the dust bag.

The device's build quality is excellent, using sturdy plastics that feel solid and durable.

The dock with tanks is relatively bulky, as the two large water tanks are at the top. The clean one can hold up to 4L, while the dirty water one collects up to 3.5L. While these make the dock look massive, they provide peace of mind and avoid having to refill and empty them too often.

Roborock has also worked on a fully autonomous version that can refill and drain itself by connecting it to a water inlet and draining system. The process is relatively seamless but requires the proper piping to be available where you want to place the dock. This version is much more compact, eliminating the need for water tanks and making it about 6.7 inches shorter.

The robot's design matches the dock's, but differs slightly depending on the version. While both the S8 Max Ultra and S8 MaxV Ultra come with a top-mounted LiDAR dome, the MaxV Ultra features an illuminated Roborock logo on the dome, together with a removable glossy — and fingerprint-prone — panel that hides the HEPA filter and dustbin. The S8 Max Ultra doesn't have a dome that lights up, but instead uses a flap to conceal the filter. Both models have three buttons at the top, although their design is slightly different depending on the variant.

The main difference is at the front of the robots, as the S8 MaxV Ultra comes with an RGB camera for better obstacle detection, while the S8 Max uses an infrared sensor, similar to the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra . On the bottom, both versions feature a liftable and vibrating mop, a small rotating mop pad to clean alongside baseboards, two bristleless brush rollers to capture dirt and dust, and a robotic side brush that can extend to clean corners.

Lastly, the device's build quality is excellent, using sturdy plastics that feel solid and durable. Sadly, Roborock doesn't include any consumables in the box, not even detergent. You have to purchase them separately, which is hard to accept considering the price.

Setup, software, and features

Intuitive and customizable.

Roborock's app is probably my favorite, as it's easy to use despite offering many customizable options. When setting up the robot, the app takes you through a first setup process that considers your preferences, such as whether you'd like to enable Do Not Disturb mode or if you have pets.

The robot then maps your house and automatically creates a map with your different rooms. It even uses AI to recognize furniture and identify the type of rooms and floor types. You can then edit the map to merge or separate rooms, set up virtual walls, and change the floor types and furniture on the map. If your house has multiple floors, you can save up to four maps so the robot automatically positions itself.

The app also allows you to adjust the cleaning settings, such as the suction strength, the mop's dampness, the water temperature, how often to wash the mop, and even during which hours to charge. Similarly, the robot's behavior when dealing with carpets is adjustable, allowing it to avoid them, lift the mop, or keep it down if you have thin and moppable rugs.

Both variants can also detect and recognize obstacles and plot them on the map, with the S8 MaxV Ultra being able to take pictures. It can even double as an encrypted security camera, with a fun feature that can automatically look for your pet or take photos of your cat or dog while cleaning.

In terms of smart home integration, both robots work with Alexa and Google Assistant, while the MaxV Ultra model also comes with Matter support and a built-in Hello Rocky voice assistant. The latter allows the robovac to turn towards you while you summon it and shout commands at it without using the app or a smart speaker. I've found the feature reliable, as it understands commands properly and doesn't get triggered inadvertently, making it a great option if you don't have smart speakers at home.

Cleaning efficiency and battery life

Outstanding vacuuming and mopping.

Both the new Roborock S8 models come with high suction power, with the Max Ultra featuring 8,000Pa and the MaxV Ultra 10,000Pa, allowing them to suck up dirt and dust on virtually any surface. More importantly, they rely on two liftable bristeless brush rollers and a FlexiArm side brush that extends to clean corners and sweep dirt effectively. These ensure a deep and effective cleaning across various surfaces.

Whether dealing with hard floors or carpets, the S8 MaxV Ultra remarkably removes dirt, dust, and small particles, leaving areas spotlessly clean. It can automatically adjust its suction power and boost it while navigating over carpets, while its FlexiArm side brush plays a crucial role in achieving comprehensive coverage, sweeping along baseboards and reaching into corners. However, I've found it might struggle with tight crevices, leaving hard-to-reach ones uncleaned.

The vacuum shines when cleaning after outdoor activities, especially after coming back from a walk in the forest with my dog, who happily brings in mud and dirt. It's particularly effective at getting rid of the mess and can even reach within grouts between tiles.

The mopping results are also excellent, with the S8 MaxV Ultra setting itself apart thanks to its vibrating mop and a rotating side mop that cleans alongside baseboards. Unlike models with dual rotating mop pads, the vibrating mop effectively scrubs floors, easily handling spills and stubborn stains such as dried coffee, sauces, or dried mud.

The dock's detergent tank allows the robot to mix cleaning solutions with water, significantly boosting stain removal capabilities. The dock also maintains hygiene by cleaning the mop before, during, and after each use with hot water, ensuring optimal cleanliness and performance.

Both models also have a Smart Plan AI feature, which automatically adjusts the cleaning parameters. Similarly, they can automatically re-mop dirty areas and re-wash the mop if they sense it's soiled. In addition, the S8 MaxV Ultra comes with Roborock's DirTect feature, which allows it to detect dirty areas, automatically adjust the suction power, and clean again using only the mop for spotless results.

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra uses LiDAR and an AI RGB camera for flawless navigation and obstacle avoidance across different rooms. This allows it to detect and avoid common household obstacles like cables, shoes, and toys efficiently, preventing them from getting stuck. The S8 Max Ultra uses an infrared sensor instead, which also provides good results but isn't as good at recognizing smaller objects like small cables.

Despite their powerful cleaning capabilities, the robots maintain a reasonable sound profile, ensuring they do not intrude excessively into daily life. Both come with decent battery life, offering up to 180 minutes of continuous cleaning on a single charge on low settings. This ensures they can cover large areas without needing a mid-session recharge, making them ideal for thoroughly cleaning approximately 900 square feet on high settings.

Maintenance and care

Almost maintenance-free daily.

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is engineered to streamline and simplify your cleaning routine, minimizing the need for human intervention.

First, it minimizes the need to care for water tanks, thanks to their large capacity, which significantly reduces the frequency of manual intervention to about once every 1,650 square feet. This is even easier with the self-draining and refilling model, which virtually eliminates the need for human involvement daily. Additionally, the detergent tank can last for months without needing a refill, allowing for a set-and-forget-it experience.

Unlike competing brands' models, Roborock uses a dedicated brush specifically for scrubbing the mop, ensuring a more thorough cleaning. It also uses hot water and hot air during the washing and drying process, effectively preventing mildew growth and eliminating unpleasant odors.

Despite its many advantages, the S8 MaxV Ultra is not without its maintenance challenges. The docking station can accumulate dirt over time and requires a good wipe about once a month. This involves wiping down the cradle, removing and cleaning the brush, and cleaning the filter — a process that, while only taking a few minutes, is inconvenient. Of course, it's particularly true in my case since my dog brings in a lot of dirt, but it's important to keep it in mind.

Similarly, while the robot requires minimal upkeep, thanks to its detachable mop and self-emptying feature, I've often found my dog's hair entangled around the brush rollers and the side brush, forcing me to clean it every week manually. It's not as problematic as bristled brushes, but long hair easily gets wrapped around the parts and needs to be cleared frequently.

Competition

Roborock's new S8 MaxV Ultra directly competes with the DreameBot X30 Ultra , which is similarly priced at $1,800. The latter comes with hot water mop washing, hot air drying, AI features, and camera-based obstacle recognition. It uses an extendable side mop to clean corners, but doesn't have a robotic side mop.

Also, I've personally found it doesn't clean as well as the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra and isn't as good at avoiding obstacles. While Dreame boasts the dock's self-cleaning ability, I've found it still requires some manual cleaning, which doesn't necessarily make it stand out from the competition.

DreameBot X30 Ultra robovac review: Just shy of touchless cleaning

Then, there's the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni, which doesn't have the same AI features, but also uses hot water mop washing. It uses a square design to clean corners, eschewing the need for robotic parts without being as good as reaching into tight spaces. Also, while it doesn't have a LiDAR dome and can slide more easily under furniture, it sometimes navigates awkwardly. It’s a bit cheaper, though, as it's officially sold for $1,500 but is often discounted for a few hundred less.

Should you buy it?

If you're looking for the best robot vacuum cleaner, look no further, as this is the one to buy. It's engineered to clean corners and baseboards, as well as to suck up dirt from carpets and hard floors alike. Its advanced self-cleaning features, including a dedicated brush, hot water mop washing, and hot air drying, minimize maintenance, making it a perfect option for cleaning large spaces.

Finally, Roborock has developed excellent dirt identification technology to provide spotless results. It automatically re-cleans dirty areas that need a second pass without cleaning the entire room again.

Being the best doesn't mean it's perfect, though, as it requires a bit too much human maintenance, in my opinion. Also, it's very expensive, so you should only buy it if you have a large home since it's really an investment that will save you plenty of time daily. I've found the S8 MaxV Ultra to offer better vacuuming results on carpets compared to the S8 Max Ultra, and it's also more precise when it comes to mopping as it can identify stains thanks to its camera.

If you have a big home with pets or if your floors tend to be soiled often and require frequent and thorough cleaning, go for the S8 MaxV Ultra. Otherwise, you can consider the slightly cheaper S8 Max Ultra. However, it has inferior cleaning capabilities, lacks a built-in voice assistant, and doesn't have an AI camera that can detect obstacles and dirt precisely.

Best Smartphones of 2024

S earching for a cell phone with great battery life? Awesome cameras? A nice price? Take a look at these options from Apple, OnePlus, and Samsung.

Top picks in phones include, from left, the OnePlus 12R, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.Photo: Consumer Reports, Apple, Samsung

By Courtney Lindwall

Whether you’re looking for the latest flagship phone or a more modest pick for talking and texting, there’s no shortage of well-made options in our smartphone ratings (available to CR members).

Consumer Reports tests dozens of models each year, checking the basics, including battery life , how well the display performs, and premium features such as multicamera setups and the hinges on foldable phones .

But even the most rudimentary models represent a leap in technology from a decade ago. And that means you don’t have to buy the No. 1-rated phone to get a great product. All but 13 of the 64 models currently in CR’s ratings performed well enough in our lab tests to earn our recommendation. The top six phones are separated by just three points in Overall Score.

So which is the best smartphone for you? Well, that depends. Are you willing to spend a little or a lot? Is daylong battery life your top priority, or is it a cutting-edge camera setup? To help you out, here are some smart options, based on our extensive lab testing.

Best iPhone

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

The Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max is the most advanced option in the brand’s lineup. The 6.7-inch flagship is similar to the iPhone 14 Pro Max , with best-in-class front and back cameras, very long battery life (52 hours in CR’s testing), and a processor powerful enough to run even the most demanding apps and games without a hiccup. And, yes, despite what you may have seen on social media, the 15 Pro Max is durable , too, passing not only our water submersion and tumble drop tests, but also a special CR-conducted bend test.

Some people may find the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro easier to use with one hand, but the camera tops out at 3x optical zoom compared with the Pro Max’s 5x. Interested in other iPhone models? Take a look at which iPhone you should buy .

Best Android Phones

Best low-priced iphone ($500 or less).

Apple iPhone SE 2022

The Apple iPhone SE has a 4.7-inch display and starts at $429, making this the smallest and least expensive model from Apple. But don’t let that relatively modest price fool you: The SE earns a strong rating overall. The camera setup is pretty basic for an iPhone—just one 12-megapixel camera on the back and a 7-megapixel camera on the front—but the still image quality and video quality impress CR’s testers. What else do you give up at this price? The SE has a retro home button rather than support for Face ID to unlock the device, and it lacks Apple’s MagSafe technology for quickly connecting the device to wireless chargers and other accessories. Battery life is about average, at 30 hours.

Kevin spacey docuseries acquired by max, trailer revealed.

Warner Bros. Discovery acquires the Kevin Spacey docuseries, Spacey Unmakes, for a Max premiere with a trailer also revealed for the show.

  • Spacey Unmasked , acquired by Warner Bros. Discovery, will detail Kevin Spacey's rise and fall from fame, featuring interviews with multiple men.
  • The docuseries promises an in-depth look at Spacey's career, starting from childhood to the sexual assault allegations and his ultimate downfall.
  • Spacey Unmasked may be Max's riskiest documentary yet, potentially rivaling the acclaimed The Jinx for its captivating portrayal of controversial events.

A docuseries featuring Kevin Spacey, Spacey Unmasked , has been acquired by Warner Bros. Discovery, and the first trailer has been revealed. The two-part series was first commissioned by Channel 4 in 2022, and it will include interviews with multiple men who, for the first time, speak about their experiences with the actor. These men aren’t connected to the 2023 U.K. trial against the actor, where Spacey was found not guilty on all counts of sexual assault. Spacey Unmasked will chronicle Spacey’s career, starting with his childhood, early Broadway success, and his rise to fame and ending with his fall.

According to Variety , the docuseries has finally been completed and has been acquired by Warner Bros. Discovery. On top of that, the first trailer has been released. Watch the trailer below:

Spacey Unmasked is set to release in the U.K. on May 6 and 7, though U.S. premiere dates have not yet been announced. The trailer is short, but it promises an in-depth look at the acclaimed actor’s before-lauded career and his public fall.

Unmasked Is Max's Riskiest Documentary To Date

While the series of events might not be as dramatic as those regarding The Jinx , Spacey Unmasked has the potential to be just as captivating, if not more so.

Spacey Unmasked may be one of Max’s riskiest documentaries. Chronicling the actor’s career and the allegations held against him will be no easy task. In 2017, Star Trek: Discovery 's Anthony Rapp claimed that Spacey made a sexual advance towards him in 1986, when Rapp was only fourteen-years-old. That was the catalyst for a wave of accusations against the actor. Ultimately, this would lead to fifteen people coming forward with stories of sexual abuse involving Spacey, including eight people who worked on House of Cards .

The new docuseries may rival Max’s acclaimed The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Hurst . The documentary, which first aired in 2015, followed the New York real estate heir, who was convicted for the murder of Susan Berman. The docuseries gained worldwide exposure and fame when Durst was arrested on first-degree murder charges a day before the finale aired. It was thanks to this acclaim that HBO would announce development on The Jinx — Part Two , which premiered in April 2024.

25 Best Documentaries On Max

While the series of events might not be a different kind of dramatic as those regarding The Jinx , Spacey Unmasked has the potential to be just as captivating, if not more so. The docuseries will chronicle the rise and fall of Spacey , someone who used to be one of Hollywood’s most distinguished actors, so it may see a similar reception. However, with it also coming much closer to the events at the crux of its story, it will be interesting to see if audiences ultimately find themselves unready to explore Spacey's life.

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Hurst is available to stream on Max.
