Spice Girl Melanie C Announces 2023 Australian DJ Tour

Melanie C has extended her Aussie trip to DJ the 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival with a full national run behind the decks. The Spice Girls icon will be heading our way this November for DJ gigs in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Darwin.

The tour will be Sporty Spice’s first ever DJ tour down under and marks her first appearance on our shores in more than two decades.

Melanie C – ‘Into You’

Mel C has become an in-demand DJ over the last couple of years, performing at Glastonbury and on the Balearic party island of Ibiza. She dropped a remix of  Jessie Ware’s  2022 single ‘Free Yourself’ and a rework of Tove Lo’s track  ‘I Like U’ .

The pop singer – real name Melanie Chisholm – embarked on a highly successful solo career after the Spice Girls called it quits in 2000, releasing ‘I Turn To You’, which was a staple dance track of the early 2000s, as well as collaborations with the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Bryan Adams.

Mel C will also play the TAB Champions Stakes Day on Saturday, 5th November at the Melbourne Cup Carnival. She’ll be supported on the day by English producer  Jax Jones  and Croatian-German DJ  Topic .

‘The Spice Girls would go down a storm here’: Melanie C in conversation at Glastonbury festival

The Spice Girls star discusses mental health, the band’s LGBTQ+ legacy and her dream of playing the legends slot at Worthy Farm in the latest of the Guardian’s onstage talks with musicians at Glastonbury

I t was such a huge disappointment earlier this year when persistent rumours that the Spice Girls were playing Glastonbury were quashed. Melanie C was as disappointed as any of us, as she told the Guardian in January . But she still made it to the festival to play a banging set on Saturday, her deep catalogue of solo disco-worthy songs capped off with a couple of Spice Girls hits. Interviewed by the Guardian’s Laura Snapes on Sunday morning in the Cabaret tent at the festival, she seems totally thrilled by the experience, chatting away with characteristic ebullience. “I didn’t expect the amount of people that came!” she says. Why on earth not? Any Spice Girl would draw a Glasto crowd, but Melanie Chisholm has more musical material to draw from than any of the rest of them.

It seems ridiculous that the Spice Girls have never played this festival – but as Mel points out, things were different in the 90s. “Back in the day you wouldn’t have seen a band like the Spice Girls at a festival,” she says. “But things have changed over the years.”

The last five years have been a whirlwind for Mel C – she’s released a solo album, put out her autobiography Who I Am: My Story, performed as a dancer at Sadler’s Wells, and has gotten into DJing. Last year she made her first Glastonbury appearance, playing several sets that nobody could get near for the crowds, memorably capped off with a mix of Who Do You Think You Are and Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. “It sounds like it shouldn’t be done, but I think Kurt would like it,” she laughs.

Before the Spice Girls took off, Chisholm was a committed raver, she tells us – ever since her first holiday without her parents, in Spain right at the height of acid house in the early 90s. She’s fallen back in love with house and dance music in the past few years, since she’s started DJing. “I enjoy it as much as I enjoy singing. Post pandemic, you see a lot more people out clubbing who are my kind of age group. Perhaps it’s because our kids are growing up a bit.”

Mel’s daughter is 14 now, and she herself is turning 50 in January – and still fighting against the music industry’s sexism, she says, especially when it comes to older female artists. But one thing that has improved is artists’ comfort in talking about their mental health. Chisholm has been open about her experiences of depression, anxiety and an eating disorder towards the end of the Spice Girls’ heyday, and says she’s greatly heartened by how things have changed – yesterday, a huge crowd was cheering in support of Lewis Capaldi as he told them he was taking a mental health break after his Pyramid Stage performance.

“I don’t feel like there was any mental health support in the 90s. It wasn’t even considered,” says Mel. “It’s incredible now that we’re so accepting when people put their health first … I was really quite ill at one time. I probably shouldn’t have been working. [And] the tabloids were bastards, as they continue to be. We were pursued constantly by paps and tabloids, we were being listened to, they used illegal means to get their info. If there had been a big announcement [about the Spice Girls breaking up], we couldn’t have faced what that would have been like for us.”

Mel is still insanely active – she tells us she busted out eight pull-ups at the gym the other day (that’s close-grip, for the fitness enthusiasts). Around the time she released her first solo album, she wanted to distance herself from the idea of Sporty Spice – but lately she’s come to realise that it’s just who she is. “I was always dressing in sportswear … a lot of girl bands had co-ordinated outfits for everyone, but for us, someone always looked and felt uncomfy. At rehearsal Emma was always in a babydoll dress, I was in tracksuits, Victoria was more posh. We looked in the mirror and thought: why don’t we just wear what we wear?

“I realised before our 2019 tour, I am Sporty Spice! It’s not something I become, or something I put on. It’s who I am. Not my entire self, but part of it.”

Girl power hasn’t gotten old. The world is still a patriarchal place, if perhaps slightly less so than in the mid-90s. But Melanie C reckons the maxim has evolved a bit. “We’re still fighting for women and equality, but these days we also have so many people who are non-binary … aren’t we fighting for a world that’s kind of genderless? For people being people? When you’re making music, why should it matter what sex or gender you are?”

The audience enthusiastically applauded that. Mel was a bit of an accidental role model for gay, gender non-conforming and bisexual women growing up in the 90s, when we were extremely starved for representation. She says she’s incredibly honoured by that – she has done loads of work with queer artists in the intervening years, including performing with London drag performance collective Sink the Pink, most notably at Pride in Brazil under Bolsonaro, in a giant collective middle-finger to the government. “When we first came out and we were shouting about girl power and the sexist experiences we had in the music industry, we quickly realised we had a big LGBTQ following,” she says. “Traditionally we have ridiculed for being different, which is about fear, isn’t it. I think the kinship with the Spice Girls there is that we celebrate difference and individuality.”

So: will we ever see the Spice Girls at Glastonbury? Melanie C has hope, despite how hard it is to get everyone to agree on where and when. “I hope there’ll be more Spice Girls shows, I really do. I will continue to bug and pester. When [Glastonbury’s organisers] see the footage from yesterday, I hope I fomo them into wanting to do it. It’d be very fitting, we’d go down a storm. Let’s manifest this now: the Spice Girls will do the legends slot at some point in the future!”

Get ready to Spice Up Your Life this November as Spice Girl and solo artist Melanie C will perform a special round of DJ sets in Australia.

Appearing at Queensland’s Club Paradiso – Sunday Dance On Oasis event with special guests Paluma, Kessin, Pish and Tara Bloom , Melanie C has locked in an Australian visit as part of her inaugural DJ tour. You can watch one of her DJ sets below.

Club Paradiso promises a daytime gig of excitement on 12 November. Punters need to get to the City Botanic Gardens River Hub by 12:15 pm – with tickets ready – so the Oasis cruise can depart at 12:45 pm sharp. Attendees will disembark at 5 pm. You can find tickets to Melanie C’s Club Paradiso gig via Moshtix .

As well as Club Paradiso, Melanie C has locked in a daytime slot at Palooza Festival in Melbourne (11 November) before jetting off to Adelaide’s Handpicked Festival on the same night. Melanie C will also perform at Sydney’s Seadeck (10 November), offering up a DJ set over sunset. She ends her Australian run at Mayberry , Darwin, on 16 November.

In December 2022, Melanie C revealed that she would no longer be playing a New Year’s Eve concert in Poland , likely due to conflicting politics surrounding the country’s treatment of LGBTQIA+ people. At the time of writing, Poland hasn’t legalised same-sex marriage and doesn’t recognise civil unions.

Melanie C wrote in a  statement , “In light of some issues that have been brought to my attention that do not align with the communities I support, I’m afraid I will no longer be able to perform in Poland as planned on New Year’s Eve.”

Her New Year's Eve performance would've been televised on Poland's public broadcaster TVP, which has come under fire in recent years for fueling propaganda against LGBTQIA+ communities, which would have gone directly against Melanie C's beliefs and activism.

In 2021, she was named the  Celebrity Ally  at the British LGBT Awards. In many areas of Poland, the country has reportedly established " LGBT-free zones " that exclude citizens.

Earlier this year, Mel B indicated that the OG five Spice Girls are back together and working on a new project. “It’s about fucking time,” she commented, per  Perth Now .

Mel B added, “We are doing something together as the Spice Girls, and it has always been me kind of championing everybody together. This time, it was actually Victoria [ Beckham ] that was saying, ‘Come on, let’s all do something.’

“So we have got something in the works, which will be announced soon.”

This reformation isn’t a complete surprise, as in May, Mel B told the British publication  The Sun  that the group were  planning something special .

“We're just finishing off perfecting what we're going to be doing together, all five of us, but it's going to be something that the fans are really going to love,” she said.

The Spice Girls – Mel B,   Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Geri Horner,  and Victoria Beckham became the most popular band in Britain since  The Beatles  after forming the group in 1994.

Melanie C is an English singer-songwriter, actress, and TV personality from Merseyside. She is best known as a member of the British pop group Spice Girls, giving her the nickname Sporty Spice. She released her debut solo album, Northern Star, in 1999, which produced hits such as 'I Turn To You' and 'Never Be The Same Again'. In 2004, she released the album Reason which topped the UK album charts and achieved international success. This was followed by the release of 2005's Beautiful Intentions, which featured successful singles such as 'Next Best Superstar' and 'First Day Of My Life'. Mel B Teases Another Spice Girls Reunion Tour in 2023: 'I'll Make Sure It Happens'

"They're gonna kill me for saying this," Melanie Brown said Friday of another potential Spice Girls reunion, which she's aiming for 2023

The Spice Girls are hitting the road once again, at least if Melanie "Mel B" Brown has anything to say about it.

The artist formerly known as Scary Spice, 46, teased that the iconic girl group's next reunion could come with another tour in 2023. "I'm always pushing to have a Spice Girls reunion," she said Friday on the BBC Channel 4 talk show Steph's Packed Lunch .

"And we were kind of in talks last year, but then COVID hit, so that kind of pushed everyone's plans, like AWOL," Brown continued. "But I think we're hopefully on the same page together — they're gonna kill me for saying this — but we're hoping, especially me, if it's got anything to do with me, which it will have, because I'm the driving force, and I'll make sure it happens, to tour in 2023."

She and the rest of the group (sans Victoria Beckham a.k.a. Posh Spice) last reunited for Spice World — 2019 Tour, which kicked off that May in Dublin. Brown was joined by Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Melanie "Mel C" Chisholm (Sporty Spice) and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) for the 13-date stadium tour across the U.K. and Ireland.

"We did our last tour and Victoria respectfully ducked out, and you have to respect when someone doesn't want to go on tour," Brown told host Steph McGovern.

Brown previously admitted that she was "upset" about Beckham, 47, not showing up for the reunion tour. "I expected her to come and just say hi at least. Not even on stage, just as an audience member supporting," she said on Good Morning Britain in June 2019.

"Do I look like I know [why she didn't]? I don't know. I'm sure she has her reasons for not," Brown added. "I've already said, 'Yeah, I'm upset.' I still am a little bit. But it is what it is and us girls, we all support each other no matter what. But yeah, it is disappointing."

Beckham was with the Spice Girls from its formation in 1994 until their hiatus in 2000. Although she reunited with the group for their Return of the Spice Girls Tour from 2007 to 2008, she's since opted to focus on her family and her eponymous fashion line.

"It took me a lot of courage not to go on tour with the Spice Girls again, but to be the one who says, 'You know, I'm not doing it because things feel different now than they used to,'" Beckham said to Vogue Germany in July 2019. "I'd rather concentrate on my family and my company. I'm 45 now and very happy to be the woman I am… I'm not trying to change, I want to be the best version of myself. Before I turned 40, I wasn't that confident. I learned to listen to my gut feeling."

Chisholm, 47, has said that Beckham would potentially join the group for Glastonbury Festival, which was cancelled the past two years running due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Between you and I, I know Mrs. Beckham would love to do Glastonbury ," she said on Lorraine in July. "It's something it's been rumored a lot. It's never been really, seriously talked about."

The Spice Girls celebrated the 25th anniversary of their debut single "Wannabe" in July.
