Mikumi National Park safari | Travel guide

Mikumi Park (NP) is a 1,247 sq. mile park in south central Tanzania. Located within the north of the Selous Game Reserve in the Morogoro region, it is bordered by Uluguru Mountains in the North and Rubeho Mountains to the south-east

Most visitors coming to Mikumi National Park (NP), the fourth largest national park in Tanzania, come to see the ‘Big Five’ large mammals and won’t be disappointed.

During the rainy season, visitors can see many of these animals in herds as they migrate from flat lowlands to the heightened posts by the trees. Giraffes can be found eating in the acacia trees along the banks of the Mkata River where elephants seek them for their shade.

Why visit Mikumi National Park?

Safari in mikumi np.

With almost guaranteed wildlife sightings, it makes an ideal safari destination for those without much time. Located just 185 miles from Tanzania’s largest city Dar es Salaam, makes Mikumi National Park a popular option for weekend visitors from the city.

The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain, the popular centerpiece of Mikumi, draws frequent comparisons to the more famous Serengeti Plains.

Visitors on safari game drives will find lions surveying their grassy kingdom, gazing at buffalo herds migrating below as well as the flattened tops of termite mounds.

Giraffes forage in the isolated acacia stands that fringe the Mkata River, islets of shade favoured also by Mikumi’s elephants.

Criss-crossed by a good circuit of game-viewing roads, the Mkata Floodplain is perhaps the most reliable place in Tanzania for sightings of the powerful eland, the world’s largest antelope. The equally impressive greater kudu and sable antelope haunt the miombo-covered foothills of the mountains that rise from the park’s borders.

In order to get a good look at the world’s biggest antelope, the eland, head over to the Mkata Floodplains from the game viewing roads. This is the most reliable location to watch elands in Tanzania, but it also offers sightings of kudu and sable antelope who populate the “miombo” covered hillsides along the limits of the park.

Accommodation is also available with well priced lodges in the surrounding area.

The park is well-known for its population of elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, elands, greater Kudu, wildebeest, roan and sable antelope, buffalo, Burchell’s zebra, sable, eland, Liechtenstein’s hartebeest, spotted hyena and yellow baboons.

Predators include large numbers of tree-climbing lions, leopards, wild hunting dogs and black-backed jackals.

It is also common to see lions and sometimes giraffes and leopards along the Tanzania-Zambia highway, especially in the evening or night.

In the two pools north of Mikumi’s main park gate, hippos are frequently joined by flocks of open-billed storks and other waterbirds.

The surrounding mountains and hills bring compelling natural beauty with addition to superb light, making it a wonderful venue for wildlife photographers. Zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo can be found on the grassy plains.

Lions, which prey on these animals, share the same area and can occasionally be spotted. Giraffes browse leaves from the isolated acacia trees that fringe the Mkata River whilst the small islands of shade provided by these acacias are also favored by elephants.

More than 400 species of birds have been recorded here including Eurasian migrants such as red billed oxpecker, marabou stork and lilac breasted roller, which stays between October and April.

There are more interesting bird species in the Miombo woodland, for example, Shelley’s double collared sunbird, pale billed hornbill and violet-crested Turaco as well as violet-backed starling, yellow-throated longclaw and the bateleur eagle.

The History

Established in 1964, the original area of Mikumi National Park was 1,070 km2 but was later expanded in 1975 to encompass 3,230 km2, making it the ninth largest national park in Tanzania. It is a crucial part of a vast ecosystem in the region, along with Nyerere National Park (Selous), and serves as a refuge for a variety of wildlife, such as elephants, buffalos, wild dogs, and zebras.

The majestic animals embark on seasonal journeys between the northern area of Nyerere National Park and Mikumi National Park, providing a captivating show for visitors on a Mikumi safari to witness the natural rhythm of nature.

Mikumi National Park is closely connected to the nearby village that shares its name and is located just to the west along the Dar es Salaam to Iringa highway. Both the village and the park are named after the plentiful presence of the (Borassus spp) palm trees known as “Mikumi”, which used to thrive in the area, although the village no longer shows any visible signs of the palm stems. Situated within a crescent-shaped embrace of tall mountains and foothills, the park encompasses the vast floodplain of the Mkata river, creating a feeling of peaceful balance. In the distance to the east, the towering 2,743-meter massif of the Uluguru ranges looms, while the rugged Vidunda mountains decorate the southwestern landscape, adding to the park’s natural charm and providing a beautiful backdrop for unforgettable adventures.

Mikumi National Park’s scenic views

  • Mkata Flood Plains
  • The Hippo Pools
  • Miombo Woodlands
  • The Mountains

Mikumi National Park showcases the immense wilderness of Tanzania, featuring a variety of landscapes that are both beautiful and diverse. At the core of Mikumi National Park are the Mkata Flood Plains, an expansive grassland similar to the well-known Serengeti Plains. This particular area is arguably the most striking landscape in the park, providing a stage for the captivating drama of wildlife. In the wet season, the plains of Mikumi National Park are vibrant and lush, adorned with wildflowers and winding water bodies. As the season transitions to dry, the scenery becomes a golden expanse that glistens in the African sunlight. The dynamic backdrop provides a perfect setting for abundant buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, and elephants that gather to feed and drink. The wide, expansive Mkata Flood Plains offer great opportunities for observing wildlife in Mikumi National Park, as the few acacia trees offer minimal concealment for the animals. In this area, you may witness a lioness hunting her prey across the open terrain or see the graceful giraffe indulging in the leaves of the tall trees.

Just a short distance from the main entrance gate, you can find one of Mikumi’s most charming attractions: the Hippo Pools. True to their name, these natural waterholes are a gathering place for hippos, offering a unique chance to observe these large animals up close as they lounge and frolic in the muddy waters. However, it’s not only the hippos that make this area special. The surrounding landscape is lush and often visited by sunbathing crocodiles, water birds searching for food along the water’s edge, and occasionally, cautious antelopes stopping by for a drink. The Hippo Pools create a mini ecosystem, a separate world within the dry savannah of the park.

Shifting away from the flat expanses and water bodies, Mikumi National Park transforms into extensive miombo woodlands. These woodlands, found in Mikumi national park, are characterized by a mixture of deciduous trees, mainly species like Brachystegia, Julbernardia, and Isoberlinia, and are less dense than typical tropical forests, allowing light to penetrate through to the forest floor. For bird enthusiasts, the miombo woodlands are a heavenly sight. Filled with a impressive variety of bird species, the woodlands in Mikumi national park come to life with the sounds and colorful feathers of inhabitants such as the bateleur eagle, lilac-breasted roller, and the elusive African pitta. This scenery offers a different pace to the safari experience in Mikumi National Park, urging visitors to slow down, gaze upwards, and admire the variety of avian life.

The scenery of Mikumi National Park is heightened by the presence of mountain ranges. The Uluguru Mountains in the north and the Lumango range in the southeast provide a varied and dramatic backdrop to the park. These highlands play a key role in shaping the microclimates within the park, which in turn helps to support a wide range of flora and fauna. Visitors can take a break from traditional safaris by exploring the foothills on foot, offering opportunities to encounter smaller wildlife, diverse vegetation, and maybe even catch a glimpse of the elusive leopard that thrives in the rocky terrain.

The Vuma Hills, located in the southeastern part of Mikumi, are a lesser-known landscape within the park. Unlike the open plains, this area is characterized by dense vegetation and cooler temperatures, creating a distinct contrast. The hills offer a secluded retreat for those seeking a deeper immersion into the wilderness, allowing visitors to quietly observe less commonly seen animals like kudus, bushbucks, and the occasional sable antelope. Additionally, the hills provide a place for introspection and solitude, offering sweeping views of the park below — an ideal location for a sundowner after a day of exploration.

Mikumi National Park’s Wildlife

Mikumi National Park is known for its abundant population of elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and African wild dogs, placing it in Tanzania’s esteemed group that accommodates the four members of the “Big Five”. Mikumi National Park is known for its large population of elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and African wild dogs, placing it on Tanzania’s distinguished list of areas that are home to the “Big Five”. Ideal Timing for a Visit

Mikumi national park, which is one of Tanzania’s parks that can be visited all year round, is separated by the Morogoro-Mbeya Highway for around 50 kilometers. To have the best chance of seeing wildlife, it is advisable to go during the dry season, from June to October, when the reduced foliage and shorter grass make it easier to spot animals. This period is particularly great for game drives as animals tend to gather near water sources, providing excellent viewing opportunities. The brief rainy season, from December to February, still offers a good time to visit as the vegetation remains sparse, although some roads may become slippery. Moreover, the park’s heavy rainfall months of March to May and November attract migratory birds, making it an ideal time for bird watching. Explore the wonders of Mikumi national park across its varied seasons.

The ultimate guide to your next Mikumi Safari

Get to know mikumi.

Bisected by the main highway through southern Tanzania, underrated Mikumi is the country’s fourth-largest national park and most accessible safari destination.

The 3,230-square-kilometre Mikumi National Park, effectively a northern extension of the vast Selous Game Reserve, protects a combination of grassy floodplains and wooded hills flanked by the Uluguru and Udzungwa Mountains to the north and south. The park’s main game-viewing circuit crosses the expansive Mkata Floodplain, an area of open grassland interspersed with stands of acacia, Borassus and baobab trees. Referred to locally as the mini-Serengeti, the plains support large numbers of elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and antelope, including wildebeest, impala, reedbuck and eland. Lions and spotted hyenas are present in reasonable numbers – if you don’t see them by day you’ll certainly hear them at night.

Mikumi national park is one of the protected areas that are found in the Southern part of the country. Its located not far from the shores of Indian ocean, it the park was established in 1964. Mikumi national park has risen through several landers after it was gazette as national park. It began as a small game reserve till 1975 when more land from both South and Northern sides were added in to the park. Currently the park is the 4 th  largest national park in Tanzania covering a total land area of 3,230 square kilometers.

Your planed Mikumi national park safari takes you to the land of Arc Mountains that surround the park across all directions. The most famous mountains are the  Uluguru Mountains  that are found on the Eastern part of the Park. In the West and the north you find the Mazunyungu hills, Madzini hills and Mbesera hills. Mikumi is one of the best national parks though not very famous but has great wildlife experience. Its unique surrounding by the mountains and the hills has given more reflection of light to the park that gives good scenic and fabulous color and light around the park. The views of the sunset and sunrise are good especially if you hike to the top of any hill or mountain and observe the sun rise or sun set.

Mikumi national park has diversified ecosystem that is further more divided by the rod that runs across the park. The road separates the park in to two sections one is North West and the other is South East. Both sides have different ecosystem with little in common for example the north West its dominated by the open alluvial plains that are characterized by more Acacia trees and the large Boababs tree. The North West is more like the Tarangire National park and here in this region you get more African Elephants. On the other side of the road which is less accessed for Mikumi national park safari and  game viewing . The vegetation is thick and dominated by shrubs with few wildlife found in the area hence making it less exploited.

The  Mikumi national park safari  is best done in the North West commonly known as the “Mkata plains”. The plains have similar characteristics with the famous Serengeti national park that is found in the Northern part of  Tanzania.  If you like hiking then the Northern part of Mikumi national park will be the place to be during your Mikumi national park safari. It has unique rock formations like Ruhebo Mountains and  Uluguru Mountains

Attractions in Mikumi National park

Nicknamed as little Serengeti national park is  Mikumi national park,  its rich with a wide range of wildlife. The park hosts large number of the big game that covers four members of African bi five only missing Rhinos. Mikumi is a home of large herds of Elephants, Buffaloes, Zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, Leopards, Lions, Sable Antelopes, Great Kudu, and many more. The chances of seeing tree climbing lions in Mikumi national park are higher than in the famous tree climbing lions home that is Lake Manyara national park.

Bird Species

.Birds is one of the key Attractions in  Mikumi national park,  the park has over 400 bird species with both permanent habitats and migratory birds. This large number of birds has made the park one of the birding destinations in the Southern part of Tanzania. The long lists of birds can be achieved with patient  Mikumi national park  safaris that last beyond 3 days. However much the size of the park is not all that very big but the diversity of the ecosystem and the vegetation has attracted different bird species. Mikumi National Park

mikumi safari buchen

Since the completion of the paved road connecting the park gate with Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park has been slated to become a hotspot for tourism in Tanzania. Located between the Uluguru Mountains and the Lumango range, Mikumi is the fourth largest national park in Tanzania and only a few hours drive from Tanzania’s largest city. The park has a wide variety of wildlife that can be easy spotted and also well acclimatized to game viewing. Its proximity to Dar es Salaam and the amount of wildlife that live within its borders makes Mikumi National Park a popular option for weekend visitors from the city, or for business visitors who don’t have to spend a long time on an extended safari itinerary.

Most visitors come to Mikumi National Park aiming to spot the ‘Big Five’ (cheetah, lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), and they are always not disappointed. Hippo pools provide close access to the mud-loving beasts, and bird-watching along the waterways is particularly rewarding. Mikumi National Park borders the Selous Game Reserve and Udzungwa National Park, and the three locations make a varied and pleasant safari circuit.

Swirls of opaque mist hide the advancing dawn. The first shafts of sun decorate the fluffy grass heads rippling across the plain in a russet halo. A herd of zebras, confident in their camouflage at this predatory hour, pose like ballerinas, heads aligned and stripes merging in flowing motion.

Mikumi National Park abuts the northern border of Africa’s biggest game reserve – the Selous – and is transected by the surfaced road between Dar es Salaam and Iringa. It is thus the most accessible part of a 75,000 square kilometre (47,000 square mile) tract of wilderness that stretches east almost as far as the Indian Ocean.

The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain, the popular centre piece of Mikumi, draws frequent comparisons to the more famous Serengeti Plains.

Lions survey their grassy kingdom – and the zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo herds that migrate across it – from the flattened tops of termite mounds, or sometimes during the rains, from perches high in the trees.

More than 400 bird species have been recorded, with such colourful common residents as the lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated long claw and bateleur eagle joined by a host of European migrants during the rainy season. Hippos are the star attraction of the pair of pools situated 5km north of the main entrance gate, supported by an ever-changing cast of water-birds.

About Mikumi National Park Size : 3,230 sq km (1,250 sq miles), the fourth-largest national park in Tanzania, and part of a much larger ecosystem centred on the uniquely vast Selous Game Reserve. Location : 283 km (175 miles) west of Dar es Salaam, north of Selous, and en route to Ruaha, Udzungwa and (for the intrepid) Katavi. .

How to get there A good surfaced road connects Mikumi to Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, a roughly 4 hour drive. Also road connections to Udzungwa, Ruaha and (dry season only) Selous. Charter flight from Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Selous. Local buses run from Dar to park HQ where game drives can be arranged.

What to do Game drives and guided walks. Visit nearby Udzungwa or travel on to Selous or Ruaha.

Accommodation Two lodges, three luxury tented camps, three campsites. Guest houses in Mikumi town on the park border. One lodge is proposed at Mahondo and one permanent tented camp at Lumaaga

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
