Wagonmaster

Most RV caravans have a Wagonmaster who heads out first ensuring all reservations for RV Parks or excursions are ready for their customers when they arrive.  The RV owners are given advice as to what direction, the best route, sights to see along the way and given a suggested arrival time at that days destination.

Following the group is a tail gunner who follows along to ensure anyone with any difficulty whether it is regarding breakdowns or accidents are given the services they need to continue with the tour.  The tail gunner is most often an experienced mechanic or Rver with tools and skills to assist as much as possible.  This ensures no one in the group is left sitting along a highway with a breakdown and not able to communicate their need to the group.

Price Includes

Of course each RV caravan tour company is different but for the most part RV Park fees and reservations are included in the tour price.  Some other features usually included are:

  • Trip logs (maps)
  • Services of Wagonmaster and Tailgunner
  • Emergency medical assistance insurance
  • Fees for border crossings and visas
  • Side excursions (pre-arranged)
  • Organized social hours at the end of each day
  • Trip preparation packet and check list

They do NOT include the cost of the RV if you are renting one, fuel, food and personal expenses.  When booking your trip ask questions and be sure you know exactly what you are getting for your money.

Although we have not utilized the services of the following companies my research has indicated that they are reputable and reliable.  Do your own research also and see if they offer what you may be looking for.

Very good post. I will be experiencing some of these issues as well..

motorhome tour

how or where do I get information on renting a motorhome for a trial run for retirement and join a caravan for an initial experience

motorhome tour

Hi Joel, Thanks for your inquiry – here’s a link to a few articles I’ve written on renting an RV. I hope you find them helpful. If not, please email me again with specifics and I’ll do my best to help you. Renting an RV Carol Ann

We are planning to travel to New Zealand to rent motorhomes with another couple in March 2016. Tracks to Adventure no longer seems to exist as a separate entity and that leaves only Fantasy, however their tour includes Australia, not a problem for us but our friends have not shown any interest in that part.

Are you aware of any NZ only caravan packages offered there that we might look into. Web search is daunting as there are so many offers that it is confusing. As an alternative we might consider just doing it the way we travel the US – on our own.

Hi Paul, Nice to hear from you. I am not aware of specific caravan companies in NZ but will see what I can come up with. Maybe one of our readers may be able to help us. Will let you know if I find anything.

motorhome tour

Paul, my husband and I rented RV’s in New Zealand for 6 weeks and traveled both islands on our own. Even though we had never experienced a motorhome before, we found it very delightful. The people there are so very friendly and helpful, and we felt very safe. I had written an extensive blog on the journey if you care to read it http://www.TravelTalesOfNormAndAlison.com Click the Tab on New Zealand 2009, then Click on the down arrows on the right, and read the blog from the bottom up. ( The blog is posted most recent entries on top ). Don’t be afraid to do this on your own.

Are you still traveling? If you are interested in writing a post about your travels I may post it on my blog with a link within your bio to your own blog. If interested let me know. Thank you.

We are planning 2 longer (54 days & 82 day)Mexican caravans this season (2014/2015), both will include Copper Canyon & the Monarch Butterfly preserve. Itinerary is at http://www.mexicorvbuddies.com/itinerary.php

Thanks for the information Paul, I would be interested in learning more about your tours – why don’t you put together something telling us about Mexico and we can share it with those readers who are interested in learning more. To everyone, I have not participated or have any affiliation with this tour group but am willing to learn more. Anyone else?

motorhome tour

First of all, Baja & Back is now out of business. Barry Monkman tragically died of a heart attack, & his wife, Vonda, decided not to carry on.

This spring a new company is doing a 71 day tour of Mexico’s west coast as far as Puerto Vallarta. It includes tours of Copper Canyon & much more. Starts Jan 12, 2013. See http://www.mexicorvbuddies.com . The caravan will be escorted by The Green Angels and led by an experienced Wagon Master couple. Since this is the first trip for this company (They have organized caravans in Quebec for 25 years), the price is only $3350 per rig, about 1/2 the cost of other competitors.

Thanks for the update Paul. I knew that Barry had passed away and am really sorry for his wife and family. I will remove their link from my list since Vonda has decided not to continue with the business.

Thanks for the link to your site – I have no problem sharing it with my readers. Good luck with it and please keep in touch and let us know how it is doing.

Yes it was a shock, Vonda & I grew up in the same small town in northern BC (Smithers) and I knew both of them well.

Do you have a catalogue of the travels planned for the next few years. If so I would like to have one mailed to me.

Gloria Macdonald 4842 Highway 215,R.R.# 1, Noel, Nova Scotia, B0N 2C0.

Hi Gloria, Not sure if I understand your request but I am a travel writer and not an agency. If you are interested in learning more about my travels or the RV Lifestyle please sign up on the right hand side of the home page on my site and I will definitely keep you up to date on whats happening. Sorry I can’t help you more than that. Happy travels, Carol Ann http://roamingrv.com or visit my other travel site –

Sorry I missed read your article and thought you offered catalogues.

Have you ever visited eastern Canada in the Atlantic Provinces in particular Nova Scotia.

I know the folks at Adventure Caravan-Ron and Juanita Khon-the owners. They do a beautiful job of advertising the Atlantic Provinces with their tours.

Everyone in this area of Canada are always welcoming to those folks and any others that visit.

In this area in particular there is a new campground coming to life -Parkville Campground,Noel, Nova Scotia-with very enthusiastic young owners.I am trying to spread the word and be of any assisstance that is possible.

Happy Travelling

Appreciate your response. Have been traveling the loop this summer and are gathering a lot of good information for the benefit of the RVers joining our caravans. Have signed up to follow your tweets and will continue to follow the website as you provide insightful information.

We are a new RV company. This summer we are traveling our proposed route, lining up campgrounds, activities and adventures. In other words, putting together our package. As our website says, we will be covering a specific route in the southern Colorado Rockies and are only interested in small caravans so more personal attention. We will be offering our tours starting in May 2012 and hope to run 5 tours a season.

Think you sum up RV caravan touring perfectly. These are the things we hope our customers realize are important. Can you offer any ideas for marketing or any general suggestions?

Thanks Sheryl, I visited your site and your caravans definitely sound interesting. I like the idea of smaller caravans for some because of the personal attention and there are people who are more comfortable in a smaller group. Good luck with your new company – I look forward to hearing from you again. Please feel free to sign up for new updates on my blog – I try and update it often and will be putting out a newsletter in the near future.

New Provider for FMCA's Tech Connect Plan

Dear FMCA Tech Connect+ Member,

Change is a constant in life, and in technology, and for the second time since the Tech Connect+ benefit was created in 2017, we must make major changes to the plan.

T-Mobile, the current provider for the optional mobile internet plan that is included in the Tech Connect+ benefit, has chosen not to move forward with FMCA in a way that would keep the benefit in its current form. So, FMCA leaders had to seek an alternative mobile internet provider that would give FMCA members the same quality of service without a big cost increase.

Because of this, AT&T has been chosen as the new provider for the optional mobile internet plan that is part of FMCA's Tech Connect+ benefit.

This new plan will take effect on June 7, 2022, and you will need to decide if you want to transition to AT&T or to cancel your subscription to the Tech Connect+ benefit.

The good news is that besides the need for a new AT&T mobile hotspot, not much has changed. You will still have unlimited mobile internet, with great coverage comparable to what you currently have through the benefit. AT&T does reserve the right to network manage at any time after 75GBs of usage within a month. Network management was part of the plan with T-Mobile as well, but at 50GB.

Network management from AT&T means that you will still have internet access, but you will experience reduced speeds if you have used 75GB of data already in the month and are in a congested area.

Congested areas are those where a large amount of users are connected to the same cellular provider tower at the same time. To keep up with the load, the tower starts to manage the connections and requests for usage. In this case, those who have used 75GB of data will have a lower priority on the tower than someone who has not. When not connected to a congested tower, you should not experience network management.

The plan is still "No Contract" and still "Bring Your Own Device," which means members can use other devices on the AT&T plan as long as the device is unlocked and registered with the AT&T network through FMCA.

One major difference with AT&T versus the current carrier is that you can have more than one hotspot on this plan, whereas up until now you have been limited to a single hotspot.

Because of the need to change carriers, the monthly rate for this plan will move from $49.99 to $59.99. This is the first price increase since the inception of the program in 2017, and you will find that for an unlimited internet plan, this is still a good deal.

To migrate your Tech Connect+ subscription's mobile internet plan to AT&T, or to opt-out of the Tech Connect+ benefit, follow the steps below:

  • Log in at www.fmca.com
  • After logging in, you will be on the member dashboard. Click the menu button at the top of the page and choose "TECH CONNECT+ DASHBOARD."
  • Once the page loads, you will see a tab that says "MIGRATE TO AT&T." Click it and you will be taken to a page where you will be asked whether you want to continue with the Tech Connect+ benefit. You can choose either "Yes" or "No."
  • If you choose "Yes," you will be asked to agree to the price increase from $49.99 to $59.99 per month. You will be asked to provide an address that we can have your new AT&T hotspot sent to.

If you choose "No," you will not have to do anything else. Within 45 days, your Tech Connect+ account will be automatically closed down, and your T-Mobile/Sprint hotspot will be deactivated at that time.

Note: If you do not fill out this form, it is the same as choosing "No," and your account will be deactivated within 45 days. If you experience any issues logging into the FMCA website or filling out the form, please contact the Tech Connect+ team at [email protected] ; (513) 474-3622 or (800) 543-3622 . Please be patient as we navigate this change.

What are Caravans and Rallies?

Fantasy RV Tours offers two different types of RV vacations: Caravans and Rallies. An RV Caravan is a professionally-guided tour that travels from destination to destination on a pre-planned route. A Rally is also pre-planned and led by professional Travel Ambassadors, but explores one area or event, e.g. Rose Parade or Washington DC. To learn more, click here .

What is a Travel Ambassador?

On each of our RV Tours, you’ll be led by professional leaders – WagonMasters and TailGunners – who are collectively known as Travel Ambassadors. To learn more and to meet our ambassadors, click here .

Will we travel caravan/convoy style or independent travel?

We often suggest scattered travel during a caravan with groups of 2 to 4 RVs traveling at a safe distance apart who may enjoy similar points of interest. Of course, you may travel independently at your own pace – enjoying sites and side trips. Your Travel Ambassadors are there to ensure safety for the entire group. It’s your vacation, so we offer options – we want you to enjoy safety, comfort and freedom. Typically, in Mexico, guests prefer to travel convoy style.

Do you limit the number of RVs?

Yes. You’ll want to make reservations early to reserve your space. Reservations are prioritized in the order received. Most of our caravans are limited to 22 RVs, while rallies are determined individually.

Do you offer an interest-free monthly payment plan?

Yes! Budget your vacation with our interest-free monthly payment program and reserve your spot with the first month’s payment. You can also secure your spot with just a 15% deposit and, no matter which payment option you choose, if you pay by check, you’ll receive a discount. You can also build your way up to different status levels that earn you additional benefits. For full program details, click here .

Do you have a referral program?

Yes. When a new customer is referred by you and completes their tour, you’ll receive $50 in future travel credits for a Rally and $100 in future travel credits for a Caravan. For full program details, click here .

Do I need to own an RV?

Yes and no. Caravans require an RV; whether owned or rented. Some of our rallies have an option to stay in a cabin or hotel, which is indicated in the tour information. If traveling in an Overseas caravan, an RV rental will be provided.

Getting Ready for Your Tour

When will i receive the detailed itinerary.

You will receive a pre-rally information packet approximately 90 days before the tour begins, which includes the detailed itinerary, a vehicle preparation checklist, travel tips, medical forms and the contact information for your WagonMasters.

How should I prepare my RV before the tour starts?

Make sure your vehicle(s) is in top condition before you leave home. Have in your possession the warranty packet and information that came with your motorhome, fifth-wheel, or travel trailer. Know the name of the dealer and location of the original purchase, factory telephone numbers, warranty numbers, as well as year, make, and model in order to get parts delivered quickly, if necessary. Use the Vehicle Preparation Checklist (provided in the pre-rally information packet) to assure your equipment is ready for the tour. Most people travel without ever having a breakdown. In fact, you will probably complete your tour and never have any kind of mechanical problem. Your Travel Ambassadors will do a basic vehicle inspection before the tour begins and advise you of any potential problems or recommended things to do to help preclude any damage to your vehicle.

Should I bring a tow vehicle?

On traveling caravans, we recommend a tow vehicle to maximize your freedom. Most caravans have free days to explore but ultimately, it is an individual preference to tow.

Do I need a passport?

Passports are required for Canada, Mexico and Overseas tours. Please note: Some USA tours require passports if they travel into Canada.

What documents do I need for Mexico and Overseas tours?

You are required to have a Travelers Visa, but we’ll take care of obtaining and paying for the visa once we receive a copy of your passport. We’ll send this information to you a few months before the tour begins.

Is extra vehicle insurance needed in Mexico?

Yes. You must have a Mexico Liability policy for each motorized vehicle and we’ll provide you with information regarding purchasing the liability policy.

Are pets welcome?

YES! We are a pet friendly company. However, it is your responsibility to care for your pet. During Polar Bear tours – you will be away from your pet 3 nights. Canadian Atlantic Province tours with an overnight ferry crossing – you will be away from your pet 1 night. There are pet accommodations available for those tours. Pet care fees are your responsibility. Canada and Mexico require proof of rabies vaccination.

Will I get to speak with my WagonMaster before we depart?

On caravans with less than 25 rigs, your WagonMaster will make an introductory call to each guest on the tour after you receive your customer packet. On all other caravans and rallies, you will be contacted by email which will include direct contact information for your WagonMaster.

Are flights included on Overseas tours?

No. Many of our guests enjoy arriving early or extending their trip once the Caravan is over, so we want to give you the freedom to do so. We’ve also found that guests prefer traveling on specific airlines, flying at certain times of the day or booking their flights with frequent traveler miles. We want to give you the ultimate freedom to fully maximize your vacation. Any in-country flights that are listed on the itinerary are included in the price of the tour.

While on Tour

Do you provide driving directions.

Before the tour begins, we’ll provide you with a comprehensive, up-to-date, field-researched Trip Log with turn-by-turn directions and popular landmarks.

Are gratuities included?

Tips for meals, bus drivers and special guides are included in the tour price. Customers should feel free to tip any service providers they feel go ‘the extra mile’. Gratuities are certainly welcome, but not required for your WagonMaster and TailGunner – they strive to provide exemplary service, above and beyond the call of duty during your entire tour.

Are ferry fees included?

Typically, ferry fees are included unless stated otherwise on the itinerary.

Can I get special meals for my dietary restrictions?

If you have special dietary needs, notify your WagonMaster before the tour begins. Some of the vendors we use will be able to accommodate and some do not have the ability to do so. Be prepared with your own food substitution for situations in which your special food need cannot be accommodated.

What are the physical demands of your tours?

To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable vacation, each tour has an Activity Rating, which is indicated in the tour information. Most tours include walking tours and guided excursions aboard buses, boats, trains, subways and planes. This scale will help you decide if you can participate in all activities included with each tour. Guests with mobility challenges and walking limitations may not be able to participate in all activities. Activity Ratings are intended to provide information for those who do not use mobility devices. If you require a mobility device, please be aware that guests are responsible for loading, unloading and securing their device on all excursions. Some of our tours prohibit the use of Scooters, which is indicated in the tour information.

Can I bring my mobility device?

Certain tours are not scooter or wheelchair accessible, which is indicated in the tour information. On tours where all mobility devices are allowed, guests relying on the aid of walkers, crutches or other mobility devices must travel with a companion capable of assisting. Guests with mobility challenges may not be able to actively participate in all activities included in the tour itinerary.

What amp service will be available at campgrounds?

We always strive to reserve as many 50 amp spaces as possible. However, some campgrounds will not have enough 50 amp spaces for everyone. At most campgrounds, 30/50 amp power is standard. Please note that some campgrounds in Alaska, Canada and Mexico may be more primitive than in the Lower 48. Be prepared to use limited power or dry camp on a few occasions.

How will I know where and when to meet for activities?

On most days, WagonMasters hold nightly travel meetings to brief you on the next day’s activity schedule. In addition, the WagonMasters will have a whiteboard in the front window of their RV that has the daily schedule and any changes that may have occurred.

How do I keep in touch with the WagonMasters and TailGunners?

We use family radios and cell phones. Your WagonMaster will explain the best means of communication for the next day’s travel at the nightly travel meeting.

Can I book optional activities on tour?

There may be opportunities in which you may want to enjoy side trips and optional tours that are not included in the price of the Caravan. Our WagonMasters & Tailgunners are available to assist you with suggestions of popular activities in the area to make the most of your vacation.

What if I have medical emergency or mechanical breakdown?

Our Travel Ambassadors are ready to help when a mechanical problem or medical emergency arises. However, if this prevents you from continuing the tour, you may receive a credit toward a future tour less any non-refundable expenses incurred by Fantasy RV Tours on your behalf.

Europe by Motorhome: The Best & Only Touring Guide You Need!

Campervan & Motorhome in Touring Europe

Do you want to explore Europe in your motorhome or campervan? The best thing about Europe is the culture, cuisine, rich history, nature and diversity, enough to last a lifetime of exploring. Taking a motorhome across Europe seems like an awesome idea, especially with our ultimate guide to help you work it all out!

We’re Phil and Izzy and we’ve been full-time touring and travelling in a motorhome in Europe for over five years. In this post, we share everything we’ve learned on the road in Europe.

Find out how you can travel Europe in a motorhome with practical motorhome advice, Europe motorhoming itineraries, travel tips and hints about living in a motorhome full time and loads of other useful stuff!

Europe by motorhome

Basic Requirements for Europe Motorhome Travel

This section has been updated to reflect the post-Brexit agreement between the UK and EU on 24th December 2020. It’s boring, but spend just one day doing the research before you head off, and you’ll have one less thing to think about. If you do get stopped during your European tour you’ll have all the correct equipment and documentation to show. Our advice and travel tips cover the basics:

  • You must have at least three months remaining on your passport (issued in the past ten years) at your intended date of departure from Europe. If you’re travelling in a motorhome in Ireland , your passport only needs to be valid for your stay (UK citizens do not need a passport to travel to Ireland which is in the Common Travel Area).
  • A UK driving licence is needed for touring in a camper van in Europe. Your UK licence allows you to drive in all EU countries. If you only have a paper driving licence or a licence issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man then you will need an  International Driving Permit .
  • You must have at least third party motorhome insurance for your vehicle. You are not required to have a green card to prove you have vehicle insurance coverage when travelling in the EU. Make sure to check if visiting non-EU countries like Montenegro, Serbia and Albania that you are covered – you’ll need a green card for these countries too.
  • You must display a UK sticker on the rear of your vehicle, instead of a GB sticker, unless you have a UK number plate which displays the Union Jack flag. If you’re travelling in Spain you will need a UK sticker even if you have the new style UK number plates.
  • Headlights must be adapted for driving on the right.
  • You may need evidence of a return ticket and that you have enough funds to cover your stay – there is no fixed amount that a customs official might ask for, but you need to be able to show that you can maintain your motorhome lifestyle. Having said that, in the two years since Brexit, we don’t know anyone who has been asked to produce either a ticket of evidence of their financial position.
  • Brits should get a  GHIC  or EHIC (Global or European Health Insurance Card) – not a legal requirement, but free so why not?
  • We would also recommend your own travel insurance and Europe motorhome or campervan breakdown cover, but these are not legal requirements. We like True Traveller backpacking insurance if you need cover for more than three months.
  • An  Animal Health Certificate , if you’re taking pets with you.
  • Any country-specific requirements for your vehicle – our country-by-country motorhome touring guides  contain up-to-date information about what you need to carry in Europe.

Motorhome Europe After Brexit

Although the UK left the EU at the beginning of 2020, because the pandemic came swiftly on its heels, many of us are still realising the repercussions and getting used to how it affects travelling in a motorhome.

You can find out all the details you need in our guide to motorhoming in Europe after Brexit , and in our guide to motorhoming in Ireland , which due to being in the common travel area (CTA) has some different rules.

In the meantime, here are a few frequently asked questions and answers about what happens when you cross the English Channel:

Do I need a visa for Europe?

Nothing changes with your passport, but from 2025, the EU will introduce the  ETIAS  (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), which will be an additional entry requirement for visa-exempt travellers and will involve the traveller registering their details online before travelling, mainly for security purposes.

How long can I stay in Europe?

UK citizens can only stay in the Schengen Area (a zone in Europe where countries have no internal borders and allow the free and unrestricted movement of people) for  90 days in every 180 days  in the Schengen Area.

The 90 in 180 day rule works on a rolling basis and it can be difficult to work out whether you are within the rules or not, especially if you have visited the Schengen area on several occasions in the preceding 180 days.

Long-term travelling by motorhome in Europe is still possible, you just need to be organised and have a plan to ensure you don’t overstay. This comprehensive post about campervan travel in Europe post-Brexit explains all the details and offers advice and insight into how long-term motorhome touring in Europe is still possible.

What food can I take in my motorhome to Europe?

The European Commission says the following:

  • Travellers are not allowed to bring in  meat ,  milk or their products .
  • There is an exemption for  powdered infant milk, infant food, and special foods or special pet feed  required for medical reasons if weighing less than 2kg and provided that: such products do not require refrigeration before opening, that they are packaged proprietary brand products for direct sale to the final consumer, and the packaging is unbroken unless in current use.
  • For  fishery products  (including fish and certain shellfish such as prawns, lobsters, dead mussels and dead oysters), travellers are allowed to bring in up to 20kg or the weight of one fish if this is higher.
  • For  other animal products , such as honey, live oysters, live mussels and snails, travellers are allowed to bring in up to 2kg.

Can I use my mobile data in Europe?

Internet access in Europe very much depends on who your mobile phone contract is with and when you started the contract. All UK providers now limit data usage in the EU in some way or another, and it’s a good idea to check with your provider to make sure you don’t run up a big bill. You can find lots of information in our guide to the best SIM cards in Europe , especially if you’re planning to be away for more than a few weeks.

We have been using and recommend ConnectPlus for cloud SIM connectivity in the UK and Europe. You can choose from unlimited data packs to just single days, depending on your needs. The device is no larger than a slimline smartphone, connects with up to ten devices, is charged easily with a USB and can be delivered within a few days of ordering. Use the code ‘thegapdecaders’ at checkout to get 50% off in the first month!

Can I take a pet to Europe in my motorhome?

The good news is that you can take dogs, cats and ferrets to Europe. You’ll need to book a pet-friendly cabin or kennels on the ferry or travel via the tunnel from the UK. Your pet will need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate (AHC).

When pets are travelling to Norway from countries in the EU/EEA (such as Germany or Denmark ) the animal and necessary documentation must be presented to Norwegian Customs for checking. Walk or drive through the red zone in the Customs area to present your paperwork and pet.

When travelling to Norway from Sweden, the animal and documentation need not be shown to the Norwegian Customs if the animal has been kept legally in Sweden and meets all requirements for entry.

It can take some time to get all the documents together and the vaccines organised, so make sure you start the process well in advance and find out more about travelling in Europe with a dog before you set off with your fur baby!

Europe Campervan Hire or Taking Your Own?

Taking your own motorhome to Europe is relatively simple. There’s no need to temporarily import your vehicle, even if you’re touring and you don’t need to have a left hand drive van. Just make sure you have the right documentation and required safety equipment, and you’re good to go.

If you’re new to motorhoming, or campervanning on the continent for the first time, then a two week holiday in Western Europe is a great way to start, especially if you rent a motorhome .

Your rental company will ensure your campervan hire for Europe will come equipped with everything you need to enjoy a few weeks across the channel in July or August, and you’ll enjoy a great taste of European motorhome life .

Our recommended European campervan and motorhome hire company is Motorhome Republic , which has hundreds of pick-up locations across Europe, all perfect starting points to see all the best bits as you road trip Europe .

An aggregate motorhome and campervan booking site, Motorhome Republic pull together all the best deals from many different rental companies, to offer you a wide choice of options alongside an excellent English-speaking expert motorhome Concierge Team.

If you’re coming from North America and are used to traveling in a recreational vehicle, motorhomes in Europe are a little different from RVs in the States. Styled differently and significantly smaller (even if it feels large to us Brits!), we generally don’t have slide-outs, full-sized appliances or beds in our motorhomes.

Most European motorhomes use cassette toilets, rather than having a black or black and grey waste tank, but you’ll be pleased to know that European motorhomes are usually left-hand drive, so just like travelling in an RV at home 🙂

Preparing Your Van for Europe

When planning and taking a motorhome or campervan road trip across Europe you’ll need to consider whether you have the right accessories in and on your motorhome for touring.

If you’re heading off on a short two week campervan trip in Europe, then you may already be well set up for this type of holiday and won’t need any special preparations to have a fantastic trip.

New motorhome owners  or those planning a longer tour may want to make some changes or additions. What you change or add will depend on how much you want to spend and how you want to travel Europe in a motorhome.

  • Which countries will you visit?
  • Will you wild camp or stay on sites? How off-the-beaten track do you want to be?
  • Will you be travelling Europe in a campervan across seasons, or sticking to summer or winter?
  • Are you intending to leave Europe and/or the Schengen area for different regions of the continent?
  • What’s your budget?

For us, we have found the additions below to be worth the extra cost when spending more than a month or so on the continent. If you intend to travel long-term or regularly in Europe, then these extras will pay for themselves.

RELATED POST: Motorhome Accessories, Equipment & Options

If you’re planning on spending winter in mainland Europe then you may need heating in your motorhome. Some areas in countries like Spain and Portugal are warm enough year-round for you to not need heating, but if you head into the mountains, then you could well be facing freezing temperatures.

Gas and LPG

You can’t take a UK gas bottle to Europe and exchange it. This means if you run out of gas, you’ll have to carry your empty bottle and buy a bottle in whichever country you are, as well as a suitable regulator. This is not difficult, but it is a hassle and an added expense.

Disposing of your empty bottle is illegal, and it’s also illegal to re-fill Calor gas-type bottles at the pump, so there really is no easy way to get gas if you’re not prepared.

If you’re touring for more than a month or so, we would highly recommend a refillable  Gaslow  or  Gasit  system which can be filled in any EU country (including the United Kingdom) at the pump using a set of special adaptors.

You’ll save money every time you fill, LPG (called GPL in Europe) from the pump is around 70% cheaper than buying it in a bottle.

The downside with a refillable system is that in the UK lots of garages have stopped selling LPG at the pump as the take-up of LPG vehicles has been surpassed by electric technology. A good compromise is to have one bottle on a refillable system and one UK bottle, and we hear about more and more people doing this.

If you’re planning to visit Morocco in your motorhome , gas at the pump isn’t available (nor in Finland) so this does need careful planning.

If you are planning on free camping in aires or wild camping in Europe (if you’re a wild camping newbie, it’s the ideal place to start) then you will need equipment to ensure you have electricity when you’re overnight parking off grid .

This might include a solar panel and you may want to upgrade your leisure batteries. You could also consider a solar generator , which is portable and will provide you with enough power to wild camp as much as you like, as long as the sun is shining!

Air Conditioning

With summer temperatures regularly getting into the early 40s in Europe, air conditioning can be a lifesaver. One summer in France, despite being dyed in the wool wild campers, we spent every night in a campsite or aire, just so we could plug in and have air con!

If a roof-mounted a/c unit is too expensive, take a look at portable air conditioning solutions – the technology has advanced in recent years, and some of them are pretty good. Make sure to check the size though, as they can be large!

If you’re travelling in summer, then an awning of some description is an absolute must. Having one fitted retrospectively can be expensive, but a drive-away awning, a simple gazebo or even a collapsible umbrella can do the trick.

Water Filter

If you’re planning on visiting countries where the quality of potable water is questionable, or you don’t want to drink de-salinated water (common in southern Spain), then a water filter is a great option.

We have a Nature Pure filter fitted, a job a competent DIY’er could manage. We love not having to buy bottled water and then having to cart the empty bottles around until we find a recycling point.

What Kit Do You Need In Your Motorhome?

Are you taking a 2 week campervan trip in Europe or longer? Will you be travelling Europe in a camper van across seasons and into different regions of the continent?

Packing List

Have a look at our  essential motorhome kit list  for an idea of what kit and gear we think is important when taking a motorhome to Europe. You’ll also find links to a free motorhome packing list covering kitchen, garage, gadgets , safety equipment and personal essentials.

Motorhome Internet & Wifi

Connectivity is important if you want to stay in touch with loved ones, post on social media and keep up with what’s happening in the world.

We know that information regarding European roaming on a UK contract changes frequently so we keep our post about motorhome internet and wifi up to date, so you can check the best equipment and European sim card options for your needs.

Motorhome TV

We all like a bit of TV, and being in Europe doesn’t change that. There are lots of ways of getting TV in a motorhome, and when you’re abroad there are a few things to be aware of if you want to watch UK television.

RELATED POST: Motorhome TV – Five Ways to Watch in Your Van

You also need to consider how you’ll get out and about, especially if you intend to remain static on a site or an aire for more than a few days.

If you’re in an urban area, local buses, trams and metros may work, and public transport is the best choice for city visits . If you’re more remote you’ll want to be able to get to the nearest village or head out for a day.

Make sure you research thoroughly if you want to tow a car – the law regarding A-frames in Europe is often misquoted and not always clear. You may find some helpful information on various  Facebook forums  for motorhome owners, and on the UK Government website .

Gross Vehicle Weight

What and how much you pack will also depend on the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of your motorhome and how much storage space you have.

As a general observation, if you fill your storage space you are likely to be overweight – just because you have loads of cupboards doesn’t mean you should fill them all!

Read our guide to understand how motorhome weights work and don’t forget to include your toys like bikes,  kayaks , gadgets and so on when thinking about weight.

Driving a Motorhome in Europe

Each country differs, but on the whole, driving in Europe is very safe – the continent has by far the lowest RTA fatalities in the world. Sweden and Denmark have the best safety records, with Bulgaria and Romania lagging, and everywhere else somewhere in between.

As long as you practice caution, take it slowly and follow road signage, you’ll soon settle into it.

We’ve had both right and left hand drive motorhomes, and although LHD is a little easier, especially on narrow roads. Right hand drive is not a problem if you have a willing passenger!

Be aware that the  Republic of Ireland ,  Malta  and  Cyprus  all drive on the right, just like the UK.

Satellite Navigation

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of motorhome routes through Europe. Make sure you have a motorhome sat nav that has European mapping, or use a  satellite navigation app  such as Google Maps, CoPilot and Maps.me

Yes, it’s possible to use a paper map but ideally, you want up-to-date information and be able to set your dimensions in the sat nav if you’re in a larger van. This helps to avoid routes with weight or height constraints, like low bridges and allows you to set your route to miss toll roads if you prefer to take the more scenic route.

RELATED POST: Motorhome Sat Navs: Best Models & Options for 2024

We would also recommend installing a dash cam, which is a five minute job if you buy a plug-and-play model.

A common scam, especially in Eastern Europe, is for a driver to pull in front of you at speed and then brake hard causing you to hit them. Unless you can evidence their actions, you will be held liable and will have to pay any excess on your insurance, and maybe lose your no claims bonus.

Be aware that dashcams are illegal in Portugal and Austria due to their privacy law surrounding filming people in public.

Speed Limits for Motorhomes in Europe

Speed limits for motorhomes vary across Europe, and can also vary depending on your weight. When you enter a new country, there is usually a roadside sign advising you of these limits.

If you use a sat nav, it will inform you of speed limits, as well as update you with traffic news, and let you know when you’ve crossed a border on your campervan journey.

Speed cameras are common in Europe, and may be fixed or mobile. Both types of speed cameras can be visible or hidden, and it’s easy to be caught, even if you’re over the limit by just a few kilometres an hour.

Your sat nav may be programmed to alert you to speed cameras, however, this is not legal in all European countries, so check with our country-specific information below – or maybe just stick to the speed limit 🙂

Don’t think that because you’re from another country you can avoid speeding fines. If your motorhome is registered in the United Kingdom or anywhere in Europe, there is a data-sharing protocol in place which means you’ll be tracked down in your home country.

Toll Roads in Europe

Tolls on motorways are common across Europe , and if you’re looking to get somewhere quickly and easily, taking the toll road is often the most cost-effective option.

With pay-as-you-go tolls, you can pay with cash or by card at the toll booth. We think the best choice is an electronic tag like an  Emovis Tag , which is linked to your credit card and works in France, Spain and Portugal, or a  Telepass device  which works in France, Spain, Portugal and Italy.

Where a vignette (physical sticker) is required, you must order this in advance or stop at the first fuel station on the motorway as soon as you enter the country and buy one there.

Vignettes are required in Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Montenegro, Romania, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova and Belarus, and you can buy some of these online at Digitale Vignette .

If your motorhome is over 3,500kg, arrangements will be different and you may need a physical onboard unit, which has to be collected and pre-loaded at the border.

In our experience, Norway and Portugal have the most complex toll systems, with different toll road operators requiring different processes. Check out each country in our motorhome touring guides.

Fuel in Europe

Fuel costs in Europe vary wildly from country to country. Generally, the further east and south you go, the cheaper the fuel.

Greece is the exception to the rule and although the furthest south and east you can go in Europe, it has some of the most expensive fuel on the continent!

Use the excellent Mappr tool to see at a glance what you’ll pay per litre.

In some countries, like Italy , there are two prices for fuel – one for self-service and one for attendant service and the latter can be up to €0.15 per litre (or 57¢ per gallon) more expensive! Beware Italian garage attendants who usher unsuspecting road trippers to the more expensive pumps…

In Europe, gasoline is generally called benzine or sans plomb and in the UK it’s called unleaded petrol – the pump handle is almost always green .

Diesel is usually called diesel or gasoil , and the pump handle is always black . But, these names can change slightly by country, so if you’re unsure use a translate app to work it out.

Low Emission Zones in Europe

Low Emission Zones (LEZs) are areas, usually in towns and cities, where the most polluting vehicles are regulated and either cannot enter the area or have to pay to enter the low-emission zone. Most EU countries have LEZ in place.

Vehicle emissions are classified in Europe by Euro Standards, which determine and categorise a vehicle’s emissions to determine its pollutant levels.

Before you travel into a low emission zone (mainly cities) you first need to find out if your vehicle is affected – this will depend on the vehicle type, age and fuel.

Each county has different regulations like Crit’Air in France and umweltplakette in Germany. Some require you to pay to enter online, some ask you to buy a physical vignette or sticker, some don’t allow you to enter during specific times of the week and some only allow Euro 6 (the least polluting) vehicles to enter. It’s complicated!

If you are planning on visiting cities along your campervan route, this is an area to look at early on as it can take weeks for the physical sticker to arrive. Find out more about each country in our motorhome touring guides.

Common EU Driving Rules

  • Under EU law, seat belts must be used in all vehicles. Children over 1.35m can use an adult seat belt. Those under 1.35m must use equipment appropriate to their size and weight when travelling in a car, like a car seat or booster cushion.
  • It is illegal to use your phone at the wheel in all EU and European countries. In France and Spain, you may not even use a phone as a satellite navigation device or with hands-free equipment.
  • All EU countries have different alcohol limits set in their drink driving legislation which may be different or lower to your home country. It’s best not to drink any alcohol if you’re planning on driving anywhere afterwards.
  • All European countries with mountains have rules about snow tyres and snow chains. Make sure you check these rules if you’re taking a road trip of Europe in colder weather.
  • Member states of the European Union have a standardised set of road signs, very similar to the UK.
  • In many European countries, certain discourteous behaviors, such as rude gestures in Germany and honking the horn without cause in residential areas in Spain and Italy are offences for which you can be fined! Make sure you’re aware of the specific European driving laws for each of the different countries that you intend to visit.

Road Conditions

Some European countries have less money to invest in their roads, and generally, the further east you go, the longer the roads have to wait for repair.

Large potholes, badly laid tarmac, lack of road marking, and poor quality of repairs can make driving challenging on country roads, and even on motorways in some countries.

Go at your own pace until you’ve got the measure of your surroundings, and leave enough room between your car and the vehicle in front, so you can see ahead and avoid the worst bits!

Driving Standards

Driving standards across Europe vary, from the considerate and patient Norwegians to the fast but competent Germans, and the feisty and loud Italians!

Each country has it’s own distinct bad habits and the best way to learn is to watch the locals and take it slowly until you’re comfrotable with what to expect.

In  Greece , the  Balkans  and  Italy , overtaking on bends, at the brow of a hill and generally where visibility is poor, is very common. Other drivers tend to slow down to ensure there is room for all the vehicles on the road, but it can be very disconcerting the first few times it happens.

In  France , drivers will sit very close to your bumper waiting for the opportunity to overtake. They will also have their indicator flashing, to let you know they want to get past, and they do seem to have a particular dislike of motorhomes!

In  Italy , the drivers are incredibly impatient and will honk their horns at the drop of a hat. They don’t give an inch if you’re trying to enter the traffic flow, so you have to do as they do, and just go when even the smallest opportunity presents itself.

Even though speed is not limited on 70% of the  German autobahn network , the roads are often so busy that a de facto speed limit is established. But if you do get an empty stretch, observe any signage before you put your foot down!

Regardless of the driving laws in each country, you’ll always see locals breaking them. Using phones at the wheel, not wearing helmets on motorbikes and blatantly ignoring the speed limits are common.

Don’t get sucked into thinking this is OK – local police seem to have a lot less tolerance for tourists breaking the rules!

Motorhome Route Planner Europe

Ok, so now you’ve got some ideas about where to go on your motorhome trip of Europe, you need to plan your Europe travel route.

Planning a route for touring Europe in a campervan can be as complex or as simple as you want. Some people like a clear plan and a short amount of driving time per day with overnight stops booked or planned in advance, others like to just go with the flow and see what happens.

It’s why we fall out every time we look at a map or start any road trip planning!

Overnight Stops for Motorhomes in Europe

When it comes to where to stay overnight in a motorhome or campervan, Europe has lots of great options;

Motorhome Campsites

Campsites are a great option if you have a family or you like to stay out for more than a few days at a time. They also make great overnight stays if you’ve been on the road for a while and facilitate things like clothes washing and cleaning your van.

We love a good campsite after a month off-grid or a long trip. Suddenly, everything seems effortless – no worries about whether there will be enough sun to top up the leisure batteries and no issues about how long it takes to rinse the conditioner from my hair in the shower! If there’s also a bar, we look forward to meeting fellow motorhomers for a good chinwag!

One way to save money on your trip is to get an ACSI card. This discount card is invaluable if you’re planning to use European campgrounds, with the scheme giving you up to 60% off per night prices out of high season. This can mean a site for as low as €13 a night.

It’s worth getting this sorted before your camping trip to Europe as ACSI need a couple of weeks to post the card and books to you.

Motorhome aires.

Motorhome aires are a great way to stay overnight for very little money, and can often be found in popular small towns and villages in the countryside of Europe from the north coast of France and the French Riv to the beaches of the Peloponnese.

French aires have paved the way for other countries to set up similar schemes, where the aire is funded by the local municipality to encourage motorhome visitors into the area.

There are now more than 10,000 aires across Europe, and many of them are like free campsites, with services often provided at no extra cost.

The costs and arrangements at each aire differ, so make sure to read the rules when you arrive. Aires cannot be booked and work on a first come, first served basis.

Aires in popular destinations fill up quickly, so make sure you have a back-up plan just in case, especially after a long drive when all you want to do is relax.

Park4Night  is a great app for finding aires, or use  All The Aires  books to identify where you want to stay.

Wild camping.

Another popular option, motorhome wild camping is widely accepted across Europe (except Portugal, which has really cracked down on this).

If you’ve only ever motorhomed in the UK, you might be surprised at the ease with which you can wild camp your way across the continent, without raising eyebrows or upsetting the locals. Much of Europe is much less densely populated than the UK and there are vast areas of land which are not populated at all that make good places for an overnight parking spot.

There are some rules (and a few unwritten ones too) which will help you find the right spot and stay safe when wild camping. Enjoy the freedom and hopefully a stunning view!

Alternatives to wild camping.

If you’re not a wild camper at heart but don’t always want to stay on a site, there are lots of schemes to help motorhomers stay overnight in interesting places and are easy to build into your road trip itinerary if you want to get off the beaten path.

From France Passion to Portugal Easycamp , In Camper Con Gusto in Italy and Espana Discovery , all these schemes offer a place to stay overnight in a motorhome.

Motorhome Services in Europe

Another surprise to UK motorhomers is just how easy it is to find services in Europe, one of the great things about motorhoming on the continent. Right across western Europe you’ll find services on a regular basis, almost in every town.

Many are free, some have to be paid for, but it’s usually no more than a few euros to empty your toilet cassette and grey waste, and fill up with fresh water. This makes the idea of camping off-grid so much easier.

Services can be found in aires, fuel stations, motorway services, supermarkets and on the outskirts of towns and villages. Use Park4Night to find services near you.

Van Life Europe

You’ve done it… you’re on the road and starting your European motorhome tour, although adventure is probably a better word!

Frequently Asked Questions

Whilst we all have views about van life in Europe, some topics crop up time and time again. See our post about the  questions  we always get asked – if your burning question is not there then feel free to  email us . We’re always happy to give an honest answer if we can and we love questions.

What do you do if something goes wrong?

Things can, and do, go wrong. At the time, it can be very anxiety provoking, especially if you don’t speak the language, or the problem is taking a lot of time to resolve and detracting from your holiday.

We drove around France for three weeks (it was August and EVERYWHERE was closed) with our over-cab bed held up with acro props and it was really stressful.

A good first place to ask for help is our  Facebook group  – remember to share the make and model of your vehicle when asking for help. Try researching your problem on the internet, there is so much information available, you may just find the answer.

Search in Google for a motorhome workshop near you. Most of these places are run by motorhomers themselves and they will help if they possibly can.

You will also find a list of top 20 motorhoming FAQs here – from why your fridge isn’t cooling to why your tap doesn’t work.

How much does it really cost to tour Europe in a motorhome?

Lots of people ask us how much it costs to live in a motorhome in Europe. Our answer is always the same – it depends on how you want to live.

Make sure you have emergency funds accessible to you, whether that’s cash stashed in a secret place (not our recommendation) or an emergency credit card. Read more about general safety in our motorhome security guide.

How do you make sure your relationship survives?

Being with your other half 24/7 in a small space may not be quite as romantic as you imagine! Motorhome life may come as a shock if you’re both used to rushing in from work at 6pm, collapsing in front of the TV before bed and then repeating for five days a week.

How do you manage preventative maintenance on the road?

Prevention is always better than cure as far as motorhomes are concerned. In our experience, water and condensation are the two areas where people have the most problems.

Often it’s a simple issue, but the first time something goes wrong can be challenging and if you don’t know, you don’t know.

Motorhome Holidays in the UK

We love motorhome touring in the UK. There are so many beautiful places to see and explore- and never enough time to see them all!

Plus, everyone speaks English- which makes things a little easier, especially if you’re new to motorhoming and trying to figure out how everything works.

Our very first motorhome holiday was to a campsite in Wales – that’s where our love of motorhome trips and exploring was born. Our next big trip was motorhoming in Scotland , and then down to Cornwall. Since then, we’ve explored the UK for weeks, and are always finding new destinations to add to the “to-see” list.

Planning UK Motorhome Tours

Planning a UK Motorhome holiday can be a little daunting. With so many motorhome route options and possibilities, how are you supposed to narrow it down?

In this post, we’ve listed some of our favourite UK motorhome destinations, but there’s a lot more to planning a motorhome holiday than just ‘deciding where to go’, especially if you don’t already live in the UK.

New to motorhoming?

Feeling a bit overwhelmed.

It can be hard to start a new hobby. Let us show you how it all works so you can travel with confidence

Of course, travelling by motorhome is one of the best ways to explore now (just be sure you adhere to any lockdown restrictions or travel guidance which may be in force.) I know many people are planning a UK staycation this year instead of travelling to Europe after BREXIT – hopefully these motorhome destination ideas will help.

Don’t forget to use our FREE motorhome route planner to help you plan your trip and see everything you want to.

Of course, a huge part of your planning will depend on whether you already own a vehicle, or whether you’ll be renting a motorhome or camper for your trip.

If you’re new to road tripping and would like more help, this post helps you plan a UK road trip step-by-step,

Where can you go with a Motorhome in the UK?

There are very few restrictions on motorhome routes or where you can go with a motorhome or campervan in the UK, although there are certainly places that I would recommend NOT going- such as into a city centre with a 7.9m motorhome pulling a 3m trailer… (yeah, we did that in Edinburgh on our Scotland motorhome trip !)

There are plenty of places to stay overnight as well- campsites, approved spots and even wild camping. Here’s how to find safe and legal motorhome overnight parking places.

Top Motorhome Destinations in UK

Still, saying you can go ‘anywhere’ with a motorhome or campervan isn’t very helpful when you’re trying to narrow it down (check out these UK staycation ideas ), so here are our top motorhome destinations for the UK.

We tried to put these in order, and then gave up, because there are parts of each place that we LOVE. So, we’ve arranged them by country instead. Here are some of the highlights you can visit on any UK. motorhome holiday. Below each place, we’ve listed highlights and some motorhome campsite ideas to help you plan.

  • Lake District

Peak District

  • Wiltshire (Stonehenge, Bath and Cotswolds)

Northumberland and the NE Coast

  • NE Scotland
  • Scottish Highlands
  • Isle of Skye

Brecon Beacons

  • Northern Ireland North coast

Top Motorhome routes & Holiday destinations in England

Touring England by motorhome is awesome. We love the contrast of places you can find, from rolling hills to breathtaking coastlines to busy cities.

Personally, we prefer to avoid built-up areas with the motorhome, but we know many people plan their motorhome routes to take in some famous cities and sights, so we’ve included them below.

I’ll be honest, there are hundreds of places we could have included- especially up North where we still need to explore more fully. Places like Northumberland, Yorkshire and the NE coast make WONDERFUL motorhome holiday destinations- we look forward to being able to explore them more thoroughly in the future.

Devon- motorhome holiday itinerary

Motorhome parking at Slapton Sands, Devon- UK motorhome holiday destination and route

Devon is one of our favourite places to road trip in England . So many people drive through on their way to Cornwall, but if you have the time or want to stop a little earlier, there are some beautiful road trip destinations in Devon.

Some of our highlights of a South Devon motorhome holiday include Dartmouth, Salcombe, and Slapton Sands on the south coast. We also enjoyed visiting Plymouth Zoo- it’s the one the film ‘We bought a Zoo’ was based on.

If you want a good surfing beach, head to Westward Ho! or Croyde on the North Coast- and don’t forget to grab your Fish and chips from Squires in Braunton; one of the best in the UK!

Where to stay on a motorhome holiday to Devon

Dartmouth – If you’re visiting Dartmouth with a motorhome or campervan, the Camping and Caravanning club have a site about a 5 minute drive out of town. Word of warning, the hills around here are STEEP (I used to run them while in the Navy) and you don’t want to drive your motorhome into Dartmouth, so public transport or electric bikes are a great idea!

Dulverton – We’ve stayed several times at Exmoor House , a C&MC site right on the outskirts of the town. It’s a quiet village, but the Copper Kettle cafe is well worth a visit!

Dartmoor – If you’re visiting Dartmoor, wild camping is tough and a campsite is highly recommended. If you like BIG campsites (with aerial treetop walks, zipwires and zorbing), head to the River Dart Country Park in Ashburton. If you prefer something quieter, Lynford is the place for you, with views right over the Tors.

North Coast – Heading to the North Coast for some surfing? Fancy being camped RIGHT on the beach? Ruda Bay in Croyde is wonderful (although VERY busy in peak season), but it’s worth a little noise for the views and the privilege of being so close to the beach.

Dorset- perfect for campervanning

UK Motorhome holiday destination- Durdle Door, Dorset

Many of our favourite places in Hampshire and Dorset are on the coast- there are some incredible beaches and places to visit along this stretch of coastline.

3/4 day camper holiday itinerary for Dorset

If you only have a couple of days in Dorset, here’s our suggested itinerary:

  • DAY ONE: If you like being outdoors, head to Swanage and do Corfe Castle and Old Harry’s Rocks. Even better, if the weather is fine, you can take a boat trip from Poole around to Swanage, taking you near the rocks. If you have time, pop into Blue Pool and marvel at the colours.
  • DAY TWO: Explore Poole and/ or Bournemouth. Poole is prettier but Bournemouth has better shopping. Brownsea Island is also worth a visit if you have time.
  • DAY THREE: Durdle Door and Man o’War Cove and head down to Weymouth. There are plenty of pretty villages along the way to explore too.

Where to stay on a motorhome trip to Dorset

We’ve stayed at some great campsites in Dorset.

Swanage / Corfe Castle- Haycraft C&MC site is in a great location to explore the area. Don’t miss a trip to the wonderful Blue Pool nearby.

Durdle Door – If you want the best location, stay at the Durdle Door holiday park . There aren’t many other campsites nearby with such great views!

Poole / Bournemouth- For a quiet site, stay Holme Inn , a CS site at Wimborne.

Weymouth / Portland – If you want campsites with sea views, I’ll give you campsites with sea views! 🙂 Sweet Hill Farm on Portland is AMAZING and worth a stop on your motorhome holiday for a night or two!

Hampshire – motorhome touring itinerary

Motorhome Holiday at Hayling Island, Hampshire, UK

There are some wonderful motorhome routes and destinations in Hampshire. If you can, plan an entire motorhome route around the Isle of Wight for a couple of days. If you prefer to stay on the mainland, there are some great cities to visit, like Portsmouth and Winchester, as well as the New Forest and plenty of beautiful beaches.

If you do head to the New Forest, don’t miss the Water Park – it’s AMAZING.

Where to stay on a motorhome trip to Hampshire

We used to stay at Hayling Island with our motorhome (pictured above), but sadly that appears to now be closed.

For Portsmouth , one of our favourites is Rookesbury Park , which is near the pretty village of Wickham (GREAT team room to enjoy)

For Winchester , Hare Farm is a quiet CS site 3 miles outside the city, or there’s Morn Hill Caravan club site

On the Isle of Wight, there are some wonderful campsites, including those with sea views or surrounded by nature. See the best Isle of Wight campsites for motorhomes.

The New Forest has HUNDREDS of campsites. Many accept motorhomes and many are lovely. One of our absolute favourites is Hurst view near Lymington, which welcomes dogs, is an easy (ish) walk to the beach and allows campfires! It’s awesome. Watch the video of our stay here.

Cornwall – one of our favourite UK motorhome destinations

Motorhome camping at Sennen Cove on a UK motorhome holiday

I spent a couple of years living in Cornwall whilst I was in the Navy and still go back as often as I can to explore. We love the beaches, the history and we never run out of new (or old!) places to visit.

Some of our absolute favourite things to do in Cornwall include:

  • Lands End. You can’t come to Cornwall and not visit here!
  • Visiting the Minack Theatre and nearby St Michael’s Mount
  • Exploring Tintagel Castle and Merlin’s Cave
  • Boscastle (where one of the best witchcraft museums in the world is!)
  • Porth Joke- secret cove
  • St Nectan’s Glen- one of the best and most beautiful waterfalls in Europe

Where to stay on a motorhome trip to Cornwall

If you throw a stone in Cornwall, you’ll hit a campsite.

For Lands End , Sennen Cove is where it’s at. The views are spectacular and you’re also well placed to visit the Minack Theatre and St Michael’s Mount. Bude has a lovely motorhome campsite and for Newquay, there’s the holiday park with all the facilities or Trevoll Farm if you want to be somewhere more peaceful.

There are so many incredible motorhome touring routes around Cornwall, but if you still to the coast road you’ll be sure to see most of the best bits (although it will be slower, so make sure you allow enough time for your trip.

Lake District – campervan and motorhome holiday destination

Motorhome Holiday in the Lake District, UK

The Lake District in Cumbria is England’s largest National park. Packed full of beautiful stone villages, rolling hills and beautiful lakes. You’ll find plenty to entertain you during your motorhome holiday here, whether it’s watersports on the lakes, hiking, or enjoying the great outdoors at places like Scafell Pike.

3/4 Day Motorhome route ideas for the Lake District

The Lake District has some breathtaking roads, including Honister Pass and Kirkstone Pass. The Castlerigg stone circle, with its stunning views across the fells, is worth stopping at, and the “Surprise View” across Derwent Water is spectacular.

In the South Lakes, plan a visit to Grasmere- home of the poet William Wordsworth and follow in Beatrix Potter’s footsteps at Beatrix Potter World in Bowness- on- Windermere.

In the Northern Lakes, there’s plenty to see in the towns of Keswick and Cockermouth and don’t miss a stop at Aira Force and Ullswater.

Where to stay on a motorhome trip to the Lake District

As one of the most visited places in England, there are plenty of places to stay with your motorhome or camper.

In the southern lakes, Kendal motorhome site or Windermere are great places to base yourself for your motorhome holiday. For the North, Derwentwater is very central and is near Honister- the last working slate mine in Europe.

Motorhome Holiday Destination idea- Peak District

The Peak District is a huge and stunning area in Derbyshire, just to the east of Manchester. It’s a perfect place for a road trip because there are so many things to see! A car or motorhome makes it easy to travel between the sites and there are plenty of campsites or hotels to use as you explore.

There are a multitude of hikes, walks and tors to climb and the area is famous for its caves, which people still lived in as recently as 1910!

The Peak District was the UK’s first National Park and is also considered the real ale capital of the world! If you’re exploring the  Peak District with kids , there are steam trains, tramways, cycle paths and even a cable car taking you up to see some stunning views! There’s also Alton Towers theme park – one of the best in the UK.

Best places to explore in the Peak District

Some of the highlights include:

  • Chatsworth House
  • Ladybower reservoir
  • Alton Towers theme park

Where to stay on a motorhome holiday in the Peak District

If you’re visiting Alton Towers, Alton Star is the place to stay. For a more central location in the middle of the Peak District, try Castleton.

Wiltshire- perfect for motorhome touring

Motorhome Holiday Destination idea- Wiltshire and Stonehenge

Wiltshire is possibly one of the most under-rated motorhome holiday destinations in the UK. This county is full of picturesque villages, pretty roads and incredible views over the rolling English countryside. There is PLENTY to see and explore. Some of our favourites include:

  • Stonehenge (which we camped overnight next to in our Motorhome)
  • Salisbury- one of our favourite Cathedral cities in England
  • Cotswolds (which cross into other counties too)

Motorhome tour route suggestion for Wiltshire

Salisbury is a beautiful cathedral city with plenty to do and see. There are great shops and plenty of bars and cafes to enjoy. There’s also a good Park a ride system, so you don’t need to drive into the city.

Whilst in the area, head out to Stonehenge and see the world-famous stone circle. You can see it quite well from the road, but there are often long queues as everyone slow down to take photos. We spent an incredible night  wild camping next to Stonehenge with our motorhome  – the sunrise was one of the best we’ve ever seen!

From Salisbury, head into the Cotswolds. Some of the best places to visit in the Cotswolds include Bourton-on-the-Water and Castle Combe- both have been called the prettiest villages in England. You can drive around as many villages in the Cotswolds as you have time for.

If you have time on your motorhome holiday, Bath in Somerset is well worth visiting too. A beautiful city, built from yellow stone which looks spectacular in the evening light. I highly recommend enjoying afternoon tea at the Pump rooms, as well as exploring the city on foot.

Where to stay on a motorhome trip to Wiltshire

If you’re visiting Salisbury, Hillside is on the outskirts but well placed to explore the area.

In the Cotswolds, Fox Inn is the cutest pub you’ve ever seen, and allows motorhome parking outside.

For Bath in Somerset, Tucker’s Grave is one of the oldest cider houses in the UK and has a field for motorhomes and campervans to stay in. Even better, dogs and campfires are allowed!

Norfolk – beautiful campervan route itinerary

England road trip ideas and itinerary- norfolk

If you want to get away from the bustle of normal life, the Norfolk Broads is perfect; big skies, plenty of peace and quiet and an abundance of wildlife. There are plenty of riverside pubs and restaurants all around the Broads and lots of campsites to stay at.

Best places to visit in Norfolk on a road trip

  • The Old Roman Fort at Burgh Castle is perfect for a walk in both winter morning frost or a hot and hazy mid-summer evening
  • If you prefer a bit of activity, Wroxham is a bustling Broads village- home to Roy’s of Wroxham, possibly the largest village shop you have ever seen.
  • St Benets Abbey
  • If you are an animal lover, you will enjoy a visit to Wroxham Barns to feed the lambs or spot the grey seals on the Norfolk beaches

Where to stay on a motorhome trip to Norfolk

Wroxham is one of the best-known places in the Norfolk Broads. If you’d like to stay nearby, the Norfolk Broads Motorhome and Caravan site is perfect.

Kent- motorhome holiday destination

Motorhome route and holiday planner- Kent, UK

The ‘Garden of England’ is one of the most popular motorhome and campervan destinations in the UK. Visit Canterbury and its famous cathedral or be wowed by the white cliffs of Dover. One of our favourite places to visit in Kent is the WW2 tunnels- so much incredible history.

We also loved visiting Beachy Head and the nearby town of Hastings – yep, the one with the Battle. There’s an incredible amount of history in Kent- if you like castles and stately homes, this is definitely the place for you. If you like beaches, head to Broadstairs- one of the best beaches near London . There’s plenty there to keep you entertained for a day or two.

Still Acres Touring and Camping Park in Maidstone

Sandwich Lakes , 10 miles from Canterbury.

England road trip itinerary- North england places to visit- lindisfarne priory

Northern England is full of charming towns and villages, and is the perfect destination for a motorhome road trip.

North East England motorhome route and itinerary

One route is to start in Saltburn-by-the-sea (be sure to search for fossils!) Saltburn-by-the-Sea is home to the historic Saltburn Cliff Tramway. Don’t miss trying Lemon Top Ice Cream- vanilla ice cream with a dollop of lemon sorbet on top! Yum.

Head to Staithes and the gothic-looking Whitby Abbey- said by some to be the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula!

In Scarborough, visit the Castle or enjoy the rides at the Luna Park amusement park.

Northumberland road trip itinerary

If you’re looking for history and castles, head to Northumberland- there are  more castles here than any other county  in England!

The first village to visit is Craster – famous for its kippers and overlooked by Dunstanburgh Castle.

If the weather is good why not hop on a boat over to the Farme Islands? With  large colonies of seals and puffins  the islands are popular with nature lovers.

Bamburgh Castle dominates the horizon and is worth exploring. It was once the home to the Royal Seat of the Kings of Northumbria and also has a ghost or two!

After Bamburgh, visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Make sure you check the tides before you go- the island is tidal and is only accessible during certain times.

Don’t miss exploring the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory. This is the place famous as the home of Christianity in England and there’s so much history here.

Where to stay on a motorhome holiday to the NE of England?

If you want to be by the coast, Link House Farm campsite is beautiful. If you’d rather stay with your motorhome in the heart of the Northumberland National park, Haltwhistle is beautiful and surrounded by forest.

Motorhome Holidays in Scotland

Scotland is one of the best places in the UK for motorhome trips. There are some incredible history, beautiful places to visit and jaw-dropping scenic Scottish roads .

Admittedly, Scotland has been a bit difficult for wild camping lately. Sadly, some people have chosen to disrespect the motorhome wild camping laws and have left some beautiful places in a horrendous state.

John o’Groats and the NE coast

One of our very first motorhome trips was up to John o’Groats and the surrounding areas. We rode our bikes around part of the NC500, and then added the rest of the NE to our 10-day Scotland road-trip itinerary.

As well as John o’Groats, which is a bit touristy but you HAVE to go and get that photo, we also enjoyed visiting the Duncansby stacks and even had a day trip to Orkney – which you can do with your motorhome.

Where to stay with a motorhome when you visit John o’Groats.

On this part of the trip, because we were using the motorbikes, we stayed at a wonderful campsite Dunnet Bay , which was right on the beach and absolutely beautiful. There is also a motorhome campsite right near John o’Groats.

The NC500- famous motorhome and campervan touring route

Motorhome holiday on the NC500

The NC500 is one of the most scenic drives in Scotland and boasts spectacular scenery, incredible beaches and unmissable views. Some of the roads are very narrow, but there are plenty of passing places so it’s easy to plan a motorhome route.

Along the NC500, you will encounter beautiful white sand beaches with incredibly clear water, incredible mountain views, the Smoo Cave, one of the largest in Scotland and the Kylesku bridge.

The route is around 500 miles long (hence the name!), will take around 3 or 4 days and takes in parts of the Highlands in the north-west of Scotland.

You can start the route wherever you want, go clockwise or anticlockwise and do all or just part of it. Traditionally, the route begins in Inverness, although you can join and leave it anywhere. We include part of it in our  complete Scotland road trip Itinerary , which is a great option for those who want to see as much of Scotland as possible in a limited time on their motorhome holiday.

Campsites on the NC500 for motorhomes

The NC500 has had some bad press recently. Stories of some selfish van owners leaving places damaged and disgusting are heart-breaking and it angers us that those people give all motorhome and campervan owners a bad reputation.

For that reason, we currently do NOT recommend wild camping along the NC500 until the area (and the hurt feelings of the locals) subside. The councils are apparently working hard to create new areas for motorhomes and campervans to stay and we highly encourage you to use those whenever you can. Here are 15 of the best NC500 motorhome campsites.

The problem with many of the campsites along the NC500 is that they close in winter and the off-season, so it’s quite hard to get water or empty waste. But there are a few which are open all-year round.

Sands is one of the prettiest campsites on the NC500 route- right on the most incredible beach. Clachtoll beach is another one with jaw-dropping scenery (they have a 2night minimum stay in Summer)

Glencoe and the Highlands

Motorhome Holiday in Scotland

We spent a wonderful few days exploring the Scottish Highlands in our motorhome. There are so many incredible places to see.

If you enjoy history, head to Fort William or one of the many clan museums and memorials in the area.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, head up to Glenfinnan and see the steam train ride over the viaduct (or, even better, park up the motorhome and take a trip on the train yourself.

Where to stay near Glencoe and the Highlands with a motorhome

There are some spectacular places to stay with a motorhome in Scotland. Near Glencoe, Red Squirrel allows campfires and has a swimming area in the river.

Nearer Fort William, the Glen Nevis Caravan and camping park has spectacular views.

Be careful while you’re up there- you could fall in love with the place and never leave. Although, if you want a great souvenir you could become a Lord of Glencoe – it’s a legal title and everything!

Isle of Skye – one of the best motorhoming holidays in the UK

Motorhomes camping on Skye

Skye is another place in Scotland which has had bad press lately for being over-crowded with motorhomes and campervans.

While this may have been true at the time, if you avoid the peaks season, you’ll find plenty of wonderful places to explore. We spent 3 days on Skye touring with our motorhome and enjoyed it immensely, despite the rain!

Some of the highlights on any motorhome or campervan holiday include the Old Man of Storr, the Talisker Distillery and seeing dolphins in the bay near our campsite. Don’t forget to visit Eilean Donan Castle on your way to/ from Skye. You can park your motorhome just over the bridge for incredible photos, or you can park up and tour inside this incredible castle.

Where to stay on a motorhome trip to the Isle of Skye

When we visited Skye with our motorhome, we stayed at Glenbrittle Campsite, which is right on the shores of the loch. Just a word of caution- the drinking water had been contaminated when we went (a dead sheep or something!) so make sure you fill up before you arrive, just in case!

The only problem with Glenbrittle is that it is a long way out from the main ‘loop’, so if you’re tight on time you might want to stay closer to the action. Portree is the main town and there are several campsites nearby, like this one at Torvaig – we used one of them to get fresh water when we couldn’t at ours.

Motorhome Holiday ideas for Wales

Wales was the destination for our very first EVER motorhome trip. We visited the Brecon Beacons, Gower Peninsula and the SW coast. It was where our love of motorhome holidays and road trip adventures was born. Since then, we’ve returned many times and have loved exploring both the Wales Way routes and places off the beaten path.

As with all the countries on this list, there are plenty of places we COULD add to our Wales road trip but we’ve added the ‘big two’ of Brecon and Snowdonia, which are by far the most popular motorhome holiday destinations. If you have time, plan a motorhome route between the two to extend your holiday.

motorhome tour

We’ve spent several weeks in the Brecon Beacons over the past few years, and we love it. If you get a chance, try to visit the waterfall walks, and also visit the incredible Show Caves (Dan Yr Ogf). There’s a great campsite there, but we also loved wild camping in the area.

Where to stay on a motorhome trip to the Brecon Beacons

When we last visited the Brecon Beacons, we stayed on the campsite at the show caves, which was lovely. You can watch the video of our stay here .

motorhome tour

Snowdonia is amazingly well connected to most places in the UK- the drive from Manchester takes around 2 hours (80 miles) and it’s well accessible for motorhomes.

Pretty much everything in Snowdonia involves being outdoors, so make sure you bring appropriate clothing for the time of year. You should always expect rain in Wales, even in mid-summer, but it can also be surprisingly warm. There are plenty of great roads with spectacular scenery and the stars at night are unreal.

Where to stay on a motorhome holiday to Snowdonia

Snowdonia has some spectacular views, so it’s worth staying in a campsite where you can enjoy them, like this one which allows campfires or Aberafon right on the coast with its own private beach. (Don’t say I don’t spoil you!)

Northern Ireland and North Coast

motorhome tour

The Causeway Coastal route around the North of Northern Ireland is around 200 miles and can be driven by a motorhome in a weekend. (Get more tips for campervanning in Ireland here)

Motorhome Route and itinerary idea

Head early to the famous Giants causeway to get there at opening time. It’s about a 90 minute drive from Belfast.

The nearby Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bride connects the mainland to the tiny Carrickarede island and crossing on foot is an exhilarating experience. Expect to queue for a while to get across, but it’s worth the wait.

Then visit the clifftop ruins of Dunluce Castle which hang precariously above the sea below.

Don’t miss the Dark Hedges. This road of arching 18th Century beech trees features in the HBO Series  Game of Thrones  and is one of the most beautiful roads in Ireland.  It can be easy to drive right past it as it was surprisingly badly signposted when we visited- and expect crowds. LOTS of crowds.

You can actually drive down the road, but BEWARE of low branches and the motorhome- you do not want to be the reason the trees get destroyed! (We drove it in a car, so be careful!)

Where to stay on a campervan holiday to Northern Ireland

If you want a central location, Drumaheglis is well-placed. For spectacular views, head to the Causeway Coast Holiday Park with incredible sea views.

I hope that’s helped inspire your motorhome holidays around the UK and given you lots of places you can go with your motorhome. Let us know where you end up!

For this hefty sum, the plush fly-in home comes with a private rooftop helipad, a helicopter and a hot tub.

<p>As a leader in luxury products for recreational vehicles, Furrion knows a thing or two about living your best life on the move. Created to promote the company's extensive range of high-end appliances and entertainment systems, the impressive 45-foot-long vehicle is outfitted with the latest smart living solutions.</p>
