101 of the Best Mountain Quotes to Inspire Your Grand Adventures

What is it about mountains that encapsulates our greatest adventures and triumph? Is it their unpredictable force and unmerciful weather? Their towering, grandiose height? Their demanding presence?

Humans have always been fascinated with mountains: admiring their beauty from afar and from their summits, attempting to reach the top of even the tallest and most treacherous mountains.

Even our legendary heroes and gods live among mountains. We are fascinated with the stories and quotes about mountains, the challenges we face climbing them, their role in nature, and of course their symbol for life: our journey, struggles, and triumphs.

In no particular order, I have put together a list of the 101 of the best mountain quotes (as well as some forest and trekking quotes) to inspire you to appreciate the journey, overcome your obstacles, and summit mountains – both literally and metaphorically.

Get outside and adventure on!

101 Best Mountain Quotes

1. “without mountains, we might find ourselves relieved that we can avoid the pain of the ascent, but we will forever miss the thrill of the summit. and in such a terribly scandalous trade-off, it is the absence of pain that becomes the thief of life.” – craig d. lounsbrough.

This adventure-inspiring quote by Craig Lounsbrough encapsulates why we love mountains. Even though climbing them is painful, difficult, and sometimes deathly dangerous, mountains teach us that there is no summit without a struggle. Life would be excruciatingly boring without challenges and thrill. And without pain, how could we know bliss? Without struggle, how could we now happiness?

2. “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” –  John Muir

Mountain Quotes 1

3. “The mountains are calling and I must go.” –  John Muir

4. “oh, these vast, calm, measureless mountain days, days in whose light everything seems equally divine, opening a thousand windows to show us, god.” – john muir, 5. “the coniferous forests of the yosemite park, and of the sierra in general, surpass all others of their kind in america, or indeed the world, not only in the size and beauty of the trees, but in the number of species assembled together, and the grandeur of the mountains they are growing on.” –  john muir.

Mountain Quotes 2

6. “Everybody wants to reach the peak, but there is no growth on the top of a mountain. It is in the valley that we slog through, the lush grass and rich soil, learning and becoming what enables us to summit life’s next peak.” – Andy Andrews

This is one of my favorite top of the mountain quotes , where Andy Andrews does a fantastic job encapsulating the importance of life’s journey. Sure, there is a great accomplishment in the summit, but growth and learning happen along the way. It is that growth that enables us to continue to reach our life goals.

7. “Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.” –  John Muir

8. “i’ve realized that at the top of the mountain, there’s another mountain.” –  andrew garfield, 9. “i am losing precious days. i am degenerating into a machine for making money. i am learning nothing in this trivial world of men. i must break away and get out into the mountains to learn the news” – john muir.

John Muir talks about the importance of nature and humans’ symbiotic relationship with it a lot. I like this mountain quote because it makes me think about the importance of money in our modern world. Is that truly how we should spend our days, in the quest of making money? Or will none of this matter in the end?

For me, getting into the mountains and nature itself teaches me about what is important in life, and what I can live without. When all you can carry are your necessities, you realize how the extra stuff just weighs you down.

Mountain Quotes 3

10. “The choices we make lead up to actual experiences. It is one thing to decide to climb a mountain. It is quite another to be on top of it.” –  Herbert A. Simon

This is another one of my favorite mountain quotes by Herbert A. Simon. It is one thing to decide to climb a mountain, but quite another thing to actually reach the summit. In other words, there is a huge difference between saying you will do something and the actions that follow; don’t just talk the talk, but walk the walk. You are your actions, not your words.

11. “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity” –  John Muir

12. “accidents on big mountains happen when people’s ambitions cloud their good judgment. good climbing is about climbing with heart and with instinct, not ambition and pride.” –  bear grylls, 13. “the special forces gave me the self-confidence to do some extraordinary things in my life. climbing everest then cemented my belief in myself.” –  bear grylls, 14. “and if these mountains had eyes, they would wake to find two strangers in their fences, standing in admiration as a breathing red pours its tinge upon earth’s shore. these mountains, which have seen untold sunrises, long to thunder praise but stand reverent, silent so that man’s weak praise should be given god’s attention.” –  donald miller.

Mountain Quotes 13

15. “I learn something every time I go into the mountains.” –  Michael Kennedy

16. “every mountain top is within reach if you just keep climbing.” –  barry finlay, 17. “you don’t need to climb a mountain to know that it’s high.” –  paulo coelho, 18. “i think i mainly climb mountains because i get a great deal of enjoyment out of it. i never attempt to analyze these things too thoroughly, but i think that all mountaineers do get a great deal of satisfaction out of overcoming some challenge which they think is very difficult for them, or which perhaps may be a little dangerous.” – edmund hillary.

Ah, well said. Sure there is a lot to learn from the mountains and nature, but sometimes getting out into the mountains is simply about enjoying them. Of course, there is immense satisfaction and accomplishment from overcoming them that keeps us coming back, despite the pain, freezing cold snow and winds, and dangers along the way.

Adventure Quotes 6

19. “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” –  Edmund Hillary

I am a huge fan of this quote about mountains! Probably because I can completely relate. Conquering an adventure goal – or reaching the summit – of a mountain is about the challenges we conquer along the way. Ultimately, it’s not about setting out to conquer something else, but the internal journey, challenges, and resolution within ourselves.

20. ”Human life is far more important than just getting to the top of a mountain.” – Edmund Hillary

21. “when you go to the mountains, you see them and you admire them. in a sense, they give you a challenge, and you try to express that challenge by climbing them.” – edmund hillary, 22. “despite all i have seen and experienced, i still get the same simple thrill out of glimpsing a tiny patch of snow in a high mountain gully and feel the same urge to climb towards it.” – edmund hillary, 23. “pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence.” –  henry david thoreau.

Mountain Quotes 4

24. “An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.” –  Henry David Thoreau

25. “the secret of the mountain is that the mountains simply exist, as i do myself: the mountains exist simply, which i do not. the mountains have no “meaning,” they are meaning; the mountains are. the sun is round. i ring with life, and the mountains ring, and when i can hear it, there is a ringing that we share. i understand all this, not in my mind but in my heart, knowing how meaningless it is to try to capture what cannot be expressed, knowing that mere words will remain when i read it all again, another day.” –  peter matthiessen, 26. “over every mountain, there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley.” – theodore roethke, 27. “may your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. may your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” – edward abbey.

This is one of my favorite quotes about mountains. To me, it means that the most amazing views – in other words, some of the most breathtaking moments – are not easy to reach. Rather, the harder the climb, the better the view.

And I think this says a lot about life. What makes reaching a goal so satisfactory are the struggles you must overcome along the way.

Mountain Quotes 5

28. “The lake and the mountains have become my landscape, my real world.” – Georges Simenon

29. “bald as the bare mountain tops are bald, with a baldness full of grandeur.” – matthew arnold, 30. “while on top of everest, i looked across the valley towards the great peak makalu and mentally worked out a route about how it could be climbed. it showed me that even though i was standing on top of the world, it wasn’t the end of everything. i was still looking beyond to other interesting challenges.” – edmund hillary.

Inspiring Mountain Quotes for Adventurers

March 24, 2022

Travel Resources , Adventure Travel

written by: Steph Kloeckener

These are the best mountain quotes by famous mountaineers, adventurers, and summit chasers.

Climbing a mountain is often considered the ultimate adventure and an epic challenge. Therefore, it is no surprise that there are many mountain quotes that talk about the race to the summit, the views, and the struggles along the way.

Quotes about mountains are a great way to express the sense of adventure we often encounter while traveling, but they also reflect life with all its ups and downs. They can inspire us and allow us to reflect on life.

There is something about mountain quotes that resonates within us. They motivate us to push for more than we considered possible so we can see that scenic view from the summit or to keep going when life feels like an uphill hike to the summit of Everest (or even just the Everest Base Camp).

These are the best mountain quotes by famous mountaineers, adventurers, and all those that want to see what lies on the other side of the mountain range.

Mountain Quotes by Famous Mountaineers

Edmund Hillary Mountain Quote

57. “People ask me, ‘What is the use of climbing Mount Everest?’ and my answer must at once be, ‘It is of no use’. There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may learn a little about the behaviour of the human body at high altitudes, and possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account for the purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any coal or iron…

If you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won’t see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for.” – George Mallory

58. “The mountain doesn’t say you are black, you are white, you are weak, you are strong. It’s one rule for everybody. If you give up, you die.” – Nirmal “Nims” Purja

Time to think or not think, read or not read, scribble or not scribble — to sleep and cook and walk in the woods, to sit and stare at the shapes of the hills. I produce nothing but words; I consumer nothing but food, a little propane, a little firewood. By being utterly useless in the calculations of the culture at large I become useful, at last, to myself.” – Philip Connors

Malibu’s Most Exclusive, Butt-Kicking Spa Is Coming East

The Ranch, which specializes in long hikes, communal vegan meals and snacks of precisely six almonds, is opening an outpost in the Hudson Valley.

Seen from the air, a large stone manor house sits on a lawn bordered by large trees with a lake in the background and mountains beyond.

By Danielle Pergament

You will wake up at 5:30 a.m. and stretch for 30 minutes. You will eat something vegan and organic for breakfast followed by an hourslong hike on which you will hear words like “verticality.” If you need a snack, you will get six almonds. Not seven — don’t be gluttonous.

In the afternoon, you will take a cold plunge, dunking yourself in water cooled to a painful 55 degrees. The throbbing in your body is not a hangover — there is no alcohol — it’s from the 10 miles you hiked yesterday, or it could be the 12 you hiked the day before. Or maybe it’s the 1,400 calories a day allotted. For all this, you will pay thousands of dollars.

This is luxury wellness in 2024. Some destination spas and high-end retreats are more akin to Navy SEAL prep — or at the very least, basic training — than five-star resorts.

The standard-bearer of this group is the Ranch, 200 acres of nature and trails in the Santa Monica Mountains of Malibu, Calif. For 14 years, the Ranch has been helping 25 people at a time destress, detox and generally rid themselves of the anxieties of life.

“It’s not like any other place,” said Gillian Steel, 69, who sits on the board of the New-York Historical Society and has been to the Ranch nine times. The Ranch, she said, “isn’t just a week-away experience. They manage to be both stylish while pushing you. You meet the most interesting people and get a week to yourself at the same time.”

In late April, the Ranch will open a second property, this time in the Hudson Valley of New York.

“For years, our guests kept saying, ‘Please open something on the East Coast,’” said Sue Glasscock, who owns the Ranch with her husband, Alex, both 60. “We kicked the idea around for a long time.”

They eventually found a lakeside estate on 200 acres of forests and trails flanked by state parks near the New Jersey border in the town of Sloatsburg, N.Y. The house, a 40,000-square-foot stone mansion previously known as Table Rock estate, was built in 1902 by J.P. Morgan. (It was a wedding present to his daughter and new son-in-law, the great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton, and was later owned by an order of nuns .)

“It’s an hour from Manhattan, which is just crazy to me,” said Ms. Glasscock.

To the mountains

I met the Glasscocks for lunch at their home at the Ranch Malibu. In the foreground, three bowls of warm cabbage soup, topped with crispy kale and microgreens. In the background was the entirety of the Santa Monica Mountains, and just beyond, a glimmering streak of the Pacific. It was hard not to feel healthier, calmer and more sustainable just being there.

“We don’t think of ourselves as a spa — we never have,” said Mr. Glasscock. “To be honest, I don’t like the word wellness.” Before opening the Ranch, the couple bought and remodeled houses and designed gardens.

The natural world — both in Southern California and the Hudson Valley — is the most important amenity at the Ranch. “Nothing we do is trendy,” said Ms. Glasscock. “The point is that you’re in nature. You’re eating food from the garden, you’re drinking more water, you’re sleeping more, you’re taking time off your devices. And you’re playing.”

Play, she said, is a proven aid to longevity and something adults don’t do enough. At the new location, a hill in the backyard will give guests a chance to go sledding in the winter. “The Ranch is basically like camp for grown-ups,” she said.

But grown-up camp doesn’t come cheap. The Ranch Malibu has a six-night, seven-day minimum and can cost more than $9,000 a week, depending on the package. The price of a stay at the Ranch Hudson Valley will range from $2,575 per person (three nights, double occupancy, low season) to $6,900 per person (four nights, single occupancy, high season). With high prices comes exclusivity.

“It’s hard,” said Mr. Glasscock. Part of the impetus for opening in the Hudson Valley, he said, was to give people the option to come for three days. “Obviously, that lowers the cost, and still gives people time to reconnect to nature.”

From weight loss to longevity

As wellness has gone mainstream, places like the Ranch have played a pivotal role in changing the definition of destination spas.

“In the U.S. in the last 10 or 20 years, destination spas were focused on weight loss and fixing bad habits like alcohol, coffee, smoking and eating too much meat and sugar,” said Linda Wells, the founding editor of Allure magazine and the editor of Air Mail Look , a beauty and wellness newsletter (to which I have contributed). “But the experience boiled down to getting weighed and measured on Day 1 and again on departure day, with a report card of pounds and inches lost at the end. Weight loss and flat abs were the goal, not health — and definitely not longevity.”

But wellness evolved. Even in light of recent controversies , one of the most popular podcasts on Spotify is still “Huberman Lab,” in which a Stanford University neurobiologist discusses cold exposure, sleep hygiene and circadian rhythms. And an increasing number of spas offer an array of high-tech, often medicalized programs .

Other pricey destination spas also take the boot camp approach. There is Golden Door in California, Mii Amo in Arizona, and Miraval and Canyon Ranch , both of which have several outposts. All of these combine spa treatments, exercise programs, special diets and the promise of resetting to a healthier lifestyle. But the Ranch is singular in its simplicity. There are vegan cooking classes, energy healing sessions and infrared saunas, but don’t expect Botox or filler injections.

“I’m not against those things,” said Ms. Glasscock. “It’s just not in our ethos.”

The Ranch is also extremely luxurious and deliberately communal. Arrival and departure dates are set according to weekly packages, so guests see the same faces for a week. Activities — including the daily hikes — are done as a group. And there is only one dining table, so you eat all meals with the rest of the guests.

“I was expecting meditation, heads down, keep to yourself, but it’s not that at all,” said Jillian Spaak, the director of a real estate investment company who lives in Southern California and first went to the Ranch 10 years ago when she was getting divorced. “You’re communing with other people, you’re hiking together, and you’re all eating meals at the same table. You go through peaks and valleys — literally — and you’re all there for the same reason: to feel better, to look better, to be better. ”

“We want to take what we consider the important aspects of health, wellness and longevity and immerse everyone in all of them for a week or three days,” said Ms. Glasscock. “Most people want a silver bullet, but there is no such thing.”

Snowstorm slams Northeast, Great Lakes with mass power outages and travel mayhem

A deadly storm that's left a trail of wreckage across a vast swath of the U.S. slammed the Northeast and Great Lakes regions with heavy snow, rain and wind on Thursday, knocking out power , closing schools and disrupting travel in major cities.

Parts of the Northeast received 1 to 2 feet of snow, according to the National Weather Service . By Thursday evening, the weather service reported over 17 inches of snow in Grey, Maine.

The combination of pummeling snow and gusty winds led to whiteout conditions and snow-covered roads in some areas. Many schools and government offices across the region were closed.

"Please stay off the roads today if you can," said Maine Gov. Janet Mills in a post on X . "If you must drive, take it slowly, and always give plenty of room to first responders, plow trucks, and utility crews."

While the heaviest snow was expected to subside by Thursday night, the weather service said periods of snow will continue through Friday. Occasional wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph across New England may also cause reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions through Saturday.

The weather service issued flood advisories across parts of Illinois, east through Virginia and up to Rhode Island, including Washington, D.C., and New York City. Over 3 inches of rain had fallen in parts of New Jersey as of Thursday morning. The same storm impacted the Great Lakes, and several inches of snow was reported in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Meanwhile, parts of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico were under weather advisories warning of strong winds, coastal rain and snow in areas of high elevation. A front moving east over the northern High Plains, Great Basin and Southern California regions will linger over the Sierra Nevada Mountains through Saturday, while snow is anticipated to lash the Rockies into the weekend.

Dozens of accidents reported in Maine amid heavy snow

Since Wednesday night, there have been about 46 crashes and slide-offs on the Interstate and Turnpike, according to Maine State Police. Authorities have urged motorists to avoid travel due to the snowfall intensity and deteriorated road conditions.

The National Weather Service in Grey, Maine, recorded heavy snowfall throughout Thursday. The heavy snow band that moved through the region reduced visibility to less than a quarter of a mile, according to the weather service.

"There are trees down all over the place and its difficult to travel on any side road," the weather service in Grey, Maine, said on X, formerly Twitter.

Hundreds of thousands without power; flights canceled

More than 530,000 homes and businesses were without power across the Northeast, especially in Maine , where over 285,000 utility customers were in the dark Thursday night, according to a database maintained by USA TODAY . The Great Lakes region was not spared: Michigan and Wisconsin reported nearly 36,700 outages.

Airports in Boston, New York and New Jersey reported disruptions; there were about 100 cancellations and 150 delays on Thursday afternoon, according to FlightAware, a flight tracking website .

Road closures because of debris, snow and floods were reported across the Northeast on Thursday.

Thunderstorms delay Baltimore bridge recovery operations

Bad weather and swirling currents are limiting recovery efforts in Baltimore harbor where the commercial ship Dali crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, toppling a huge portion of the span and killing six construction workers.

The current of one knot, underwater visibility of 2 feet and the tangled mass of steel and concrete from the bridge have complicated the work of divers, according to a senior U.S. official briefed on the multi-agency recover effort.

Thunderstorms in the area have delayed operations until Friday, the official said. One container that had been knocked off the Dali has been located, and crews plan to refloat it by Friday.

Damage assessments, cleanup underway in parts of central, eastern US

The large storm system, which has walloped the nation with severe weather conditions since the weekend, spun up tornadoes in Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia this week, damaging businesses and leveling homes. In areas as far south as Florida, strong winds toppled utility poles and snapped trees. Throughout the Midwest, floodwaters trapped cars in roadways and left people stranded for hours.

"It's devastating," said Sunbright Mayor Karen Melton on Wednesday after a  tornado ripped through the small Tennessee city, about an hour northwest of Knoxville. Though there were no deaths of injuries, the damage was immense. "We had a young mother and father holding their babies, an infant and a 4-year-old (when) the tornado ripped the roof of their apartment. ... It was just horrific and sad. But they were safe, she had some scratches, but the babies were safe. That was just a major blessing."

In northern West Virginia, a mudslide washed out over 200 tombstones at a cemetery in Wheeling, a small city at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, CBS42 reported. The cemetery, which was closed Thursday, is home to thousands of graves, some of which date back to the Civil War.

In Indiana, the storm destroyed homes throughout the Evansville area, including the city's wartime museum, which had to cancel all events and close because it had "heavily sustained damage." Photos posted on the museum's  Facebook page show  caved-in ceiling tiles and exposed insulation.

Authorities in Georgia continued the cleanup effort following a pair of tornadoes that struck the Atlanta metro area and Crisp County, near the center of the state, late Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service. In Crisp County, where the tornado had maximum winds of up to 100 mph, about 36 homes were either damaged or completely destroyed.

"This is a dangerous situation: trees still being cut in the area, power lines still down, a lot of equipment moving back and forth," Sheriff Billy Hancock said in a video posted to Facebook on Thursday. "There's still plenty of work to be done."

Officials tie several deaths to powerful storm

At least four people died in Kentucky, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania because of the storm this week.

On Wednesday, two people – a 70-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman – died when their cars were crushed by fallen trees, multiple outlets reported. A young man in Campbell County, Kentucky, died in a traffic accident during Tuesday’s storms,  Gov. Andy Beshear said  at a news conference Wednesday.

On Monday, a 46-year-old unhoused woman in Tulsa, Oklahoma, died after seeking shelter in a storm drain   KJRH-TV reported .

Major California highway closed again after partial collapse

A major highway in Southern California that collapsed over the weekend when thunderstorms drenched the region has been closed again as more severe weather is forecast for the region.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office in Salinas announced an evacuation order Wednesday morning for areas of Big Sur ahead of showers and thunderstorms that began Thursday and are anticipated to continue Friday. Officials said residents could evacuate on Highway 1 to the north before "a full road closure" where the collapse occurred last Saturday.

The road "slip out" happened during heavy rainfall that was fueled by the large weather system making its way across the country, which also brought damaging hail to the Midwest.
