Mt. Joy were on top form Thursday night. I saw them in May and in the intervening 4 months they have been touring pretty much full time. And it shows. This was a confident band who gel together well so that the whole is greater than the parts. I have a particular liking for the song Jenny Jenkins and that was superb, but it would be churlish to try to pick the set apart. It was all highlights.

I get yet to see a poor show at the U Street Music Hall.

Best performance I've seen this year.

The venue was amazing, the service decent. And after the concert, the band took time to share their personal stories. The vibe at the concert cannot be quantified,it was exhilarating.

Mt. Joy Lay Out 2024 Tour Dates

Mt. Joy Lay Out 2024 Tour Dates

Today, Philadelphia quintet-Mt. Joy unveiled the first wave of their highly anticipated 2024 tour. The new string of dates includes their debut headlining performance at Madison Square Garden set for Sept. 28, 2024, which was announced early last week.

Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar), Sam Cooper (guitar), Sotiris Eliopoulos (drums), Jackie Miclau (keys, piano), and Michael Byrnes (bass) will begin the new year down in Cancun at Out of the Blue Festival on Jan. 7-8. Following the seaside kick-off, the band is set to open for Noah Kahan at Fenway Park and for Zach Bryan at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum as part of their extensive tour. Between the two dates, they’ll begin performing at arena-sized venues at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage.

Throughout the summer they’ll continue to perform around the country with dates scheduled in Columbia, Md., Minneapolis, Morrison, Colo., Salt Lake City, Austin, Texas, Nashville, Tenn., Alpharetta, Ga., Bend, Ore. and more. The dates released so far will culminate during the aforementioned stand in New York set for Sept. 28. The band hinted at additional dates and cities that will be announced at a later date.

2024’s tour dates follow a year of remarkable success for Mt. Joy, including sold-out shows at iconic venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the MGM Music Hall at Fenway (twice), and Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, not to mention a slew of incredible festival performances all throughout the summer.

Lead singer Matt Quinn expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s incredible to cross these milestones off the bucket list. I know we will always remember the hard work that got us here – the many rehearsals, shows, shitty loadouts in the snow – always knowing that if we kept going, we could be one of the best bands in the world. We’re a pretty humble group but we’re excited to be put on these stages where we can go prove, to anyone who doesn’t already know, that we’re one of the best out right now.”

Tickets for all the tour dates are scheduled to go on sale to the general public on Friday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. local time. For more information, including pre-sales, visit Mt. Joy’s official website .

Things To Do

Music + concerts, music + concerts | mt. joy’s matt quinn describes how joshua tree inspired band’s new ‘orange blood’ music, the group will perform at the hollywood palladium on aug 5..

mt joy tour opening band

Ever since Mt. Joy made a big splash in the music world with “Silver Lining,” the single from the band’s 2018 self-titled debut album that became a No. 1 hit on adult alternative radio, the band has been widely labeled as a folk-rock act and frequently compared to the Lumineers.

Mt. Joy singer/guitarist Matt Quinn will even allow that “Silver Lining” sounded a little like the Lumineers, with its strummy folk-ish verses and stacked harmonies in the chorus. And the fact that Mt. Joy opened for the Lumineers on that group’s early 2020 arena tour probably reinforced the connection.

But Quinn is ready to see Mt. Joy’s music viewed through something much broader than a folk-rock/Lumineers lens.

“I love the Lumineers. I got to meet them. They’re lovely people. I think the music they make is fantastic,” Quinn noted during a late July phone interview. “Not wanting to be compared to them has nothing to do with not liking their music. I think it’s just about comparison.

“I get where it came from and everything, but I think it’s a bit lazy,” he explained. “Our big hit song, sort of, I can see where the Lumineers thing comes in. But that was a song I wrote in college. I think about Mt. Joy, that was a song that got thrown onto our first record because people probably thought it could do as well as it did. But it didn’t even really represent the (first) record, I think, that well. If you go back and listen to the first record, the other songs were pretty different. So I don’t know if our whole goal is to avoid comparisons, but it is nice to start to feel like we’re coming into our own and the music we’re making fits the music we want to be making.”

The band’s newly released third album, “Orange Blood,” could go a long way in changing perceptions about Mt. Joy’s music. The group will perform at the Hollywood Palladium on Aug 5.

There is still a folk element to songs such as “Roly Poly,” “Don’t It Feel Good” and the title track, but they come with some gauzy atmospherics, synthetic beats and treated guitar tones that push the songs outside of the folk realm. Elsewhere Mt. Joy get even more adventurous with the sonics. “Johnson Song” has a distorted lead guitar that gives the tune a freaky edge. “Lemon Tree” takes on a Beatles-esque psychedelic pop experience when it kicks into a pair of instrumental segments full of fuzzed-up tones. “Evergreen,” meanwhile, is a catchy, nervy rocker with shimmery guitars and a driving beat. The sonic creativity generally enhances the songs, but what still stands out most is the ability of Quinn and his bandmates to craft striking and inviting melodies.

Quinn got started writing for “Orange Blood” soon after the tour opening for the Lumineers wrapped in March 2020.

That was not the original plan. Mt. Joy had their second album, “Rearrange Us,” ready for release and were eyeing an extensive round of touring in 2020 to support the album. But then the pandemic hit, upending those big plans, although the band went ahead and released “Rearrange Us” rather than making their fans wait any longer for new music.

Pivoting into songwriting mode was the only real option for Quinn once the world started shutting down.

“Right when the pandemic started, I was in New York City. I was stuck in a studio apartment and actually, my girlfriend had a kind of busted acoustic guitar, but I didn’t even have my guitar,” Quinn said. “But I had (her) guitar and it (songwriting) was all there was to do. We were literally quarantined and genuinely terrified of interacting with people. So we were making music, and yeah, it was freeing in a way to have an outlet like that. I feel really, really fortunate that that was my job.”

Quinn and his girlfriend didn’t stay in New York City for long. As t city became an epicenter of the pandemic, they decided to move to Quinn’s former hometown of Philadelphia. Eventually, Quinn and his girlfriend felt things had calmed down enough for them to travel to Los Angeles to bring Quinn’s things from his apartment there back to Philadelphia.

It was during this trip that Quinn began to get his head around the kind of album he was starting to make.

“On the way back east to Philadelphia, we stopped in Joshua Tree. And just sort of, I think really the intentions for the record and what we were trying to do with the music, were really built there,” Quinn said. “There’s such a spiritual element to being there, you really connect with this sort of like, the earth, really. You can just connect with this larger level of (existence). All of this stuff was happening with COVID and everything at the time, but the earth is still an incredibly beautiful thing.

“I think just connecting with that, the idea of orange blood came from just this idea that the sun and the light is sort of the blood of the universe,” he said. “And yeah, I was sort of able to wrap my head around maybe the intention of the record being a place where people could zoom out a little bit and connect with something other than sort of doomscrolling around their phone.”

After that, Quinn and his songwriting partner in Mt. Joy, guitarist Sam Cooper, rented a small barn near Philadelphia and started convening for near-daily writing and recording sessions. Most of “Orange Blood” was written there, and then it was time to hit the studio. So Quinn and Cooper joined the rest of the band – keyboardist Jackie Miclau, bassist Michael Byrnes and drummer Sotoris Eliopoulos – and producer Caleb Nelson in Los Angeles, where the album was completed.

Quinn credits Nelson, a long-time friend of the band who produced several songs on the first album, with helping to achieve many of the bold sonic treatments of the songs.

“I think for us it was definitely intentional. I think each record is an opportunity to do something different and to take a step in a new direction,” Quinn said. “It feels like each record you get a little more space and time in the studio to experiment, to try to make sounds and try to make really, I think the most simple explanation is you’re just trying to make something that moves you.”

Quinn said the new songs – even with the studio-crafted sonics – translate well to the live stage. And the “Orange Blood” material is bringing Mt. Joy closer to achieving the kind of live experience the band has wanted to create all along.

“One of the real amazing things about the new album is it’s really allowed our sets to be more diverse,” Quinn said. “Before this album we had, what, like I don’t know, 26 songs, which of course, you don’t play every single one. You get into a set list problem where you’re trying to change it up as much as possible, and we would really like to become a band that plays, that has unique shows. And our new album has really allowed that to happen. It’s set up some cool jams. It’s really made the live show more dynamic, I think.”

Mt. Joy's Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper Talk Band's Rise, New Music — and Their Friendship with Dave Matthews (Exclusive)

Following the success of "Astrovan," Mt. Joy has continued on a self-proclaimed "gradual" rise to stardom

Alexandra Schonfeld is a features writer at PEOPLE. She has been working at PEOPLE since April 2022. Her work previously appeared in Newsweek .

Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper will be the first to say that their road to fame has been more of a "gradual" climb rather than a “rocket ship” to the top.

The two Pennsylvania natives, who make up two of the five-piece band Mt. Joy , have known each other since they were kids — though it wasn't until they were both young adults that they decided to give music a real go.

“I remember at that point Matt called me and was like, ‘The song is doing things. Should we try it? Do you want to be a part of this? Should we actually do this?,’ Cooper, 35, recalled to PEOPLE of the success of one of the band's first songs, “Astrovan.” “And I was like, ‘Yes, let's do it.’”

The band, which is named as a "tribute" to the area where the two grew up, is now five people strong and is made up of Quinn, 33, (guitar and vocals), Cooper (guitar), Michael Byrnes (bass), Sotiris Eliopoulos (drums) and Jackie Miclau (keyboard).

Courtesy of Fender

Cooper describes the band’s sound as “eclectic.”

“We all come from different backgrounds,” Cooper told PEOPLE of the collection of musicians. “Jackie is a classically trained piano player. Soti is more of this punk rock drummer from Long Beach. Michael's just a straight rock bassist. And Matt and I come from more, I guess, classic rock jam bands, '60s, '70s, '80s music background, but also singer-songwriter stuff.”

“When you put it all together, it just sounds different than other things because of that, because we're all just coming from such different backgrounds and inputting what we can into the music,” he continued.  “And it ends up sounding like nothing else in my opinion.”

Since “Astrovan,” the band has toured the country — and the world — alongside bands like The Head and the Heart and Whitney and are currently on tour, playing shows at Austin City Limits, Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and Central Park in New York City and will soon be heading overseas.

On this tour, the band has partnered with Fender to give fans a behind the scenes look through the On the Road series, which was shared exclusively with PEOPLE. The clip showcases the guitar maker’s new line of acoustic-electric guitar called the Highway Series, which the band has been using backstage during this tour ahead of their official release on Oct. 10.

Over the last many years as the band has continued to build an ever growing fan base, one of the things that has been most unexpected are “the people you meet along the way and that you never would've expected to meet,” Quinn said.

One of those people is Dave Matthews , whom Quinn says some band members have “gotten close [to] in a meaningful way.”

Cooper said some interactions with the Grammy winner still leave him thinking: “This is f---ing Dave Matthews.”

And by the sound of it — the admiration goes both ways.

“[Matthews] did say ... I have to say this,” Cooper said. “"He wished that one day he could write a song as good as ‘Bathroom Light.'" (“Bathroom Light” is a song off of the band’s 2022 album Orange Blood .)

Matt Everitt

“I would say that relationship and similar relationships are the ones where I'm like, ‘How did we get here?'" Quinn added.

Another surreal moment for the band has been playing venues like Red Rocks — something Cooper said was a bucket list item.

“We spent a few years in a van, and then you're in a really crappy tour bus, and then you slowly get to a slightly nicer tour bus and then things kind of just get better over time,” Cooper recalled looking back on how far the band has come. “And then eventually you kind of look out and you're like, ‘Holy s--- we're at Red Rocks.’”

Through all the trials and tribulations they've gone through as a band trying to make it in the music industry, Quinn says they are at a point now where they can stop for a moment and take it all in.

"Now there is a bit of like, whoa, this has really become a thing," he said. "And it's definitely really exciting. It just feels good because I think everyone in this, not just Sam and I, put so much time and effort and traveling around in a van for years and girlfriends breaking up with you and all the sort of sacrifices and whatever else. To then see it all kind of work out, at least for now, is a really good feeling."

Next summer, the band has two shows scheduled opening for Noah Kahan at Fenway Stadium in Boston and while they play coy when asked about a new album, Quinn says there are things in the works.

“We're obviously working on new music,” he said before adding,  “we're chomping at the bit to get off the road and into the studio and work on what's next for Mt. Joy. So I think we'll leave it at that, but we've got some stuff cooking.”

Mt. Joy Los Angeles, California

Mt. Joy started off as a rekindling of shared musical ambitions between high school friends Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar). Reunited in Los Angeles thanks to the ebbs and flows of adult life, the pair met multi-instrumentalist Michael Byrnes through a Craigslist ad. They named themselves Mt. Joy as an ode to a mountain in Valley Forge National Park near Sam’s childhood home. ...   more

Mt. Joy to perform live in concert at Rock the Ruins at Holliday Park in Indianapolis on Friday, August 4, 2023!

Mt. Joy's songs unfold like good political speeches: They amble and converse and pulsate fervently until it's time to get the crowd chanting along.” – NPR

Across various cultures and belief systems, the color orange symbolizes sunshine, creativity, heat, freedom, fascination, and fire. Mt. Joy channels this bright, bold, and brilliant energy on their 2022 third full-length offering, Orange Blood, which is set to release on June 17th via Island Records. The title track, which was released today across platforms, hinges on gently strummed guitar as woozy vocals echo over sparse swells of sound before the central hummable harmony drifts in and out of focus. Watch the accompanying video here.

Orange Blood explores a sonic spectrum of eloquent daydreams, blissful guitar-propelled psychedelic rock, and artful alternative alchemy siphoned from sessions in the Southern California desert under a watchful sun. When the global pandemic upended the bands tour with The Lumineers in 2020, Matt and Sam retreated into the desert. Holing up in a house with Matt’s girlfriend and brother, shroom-fueled detours, late-night conversations about life, and a thirst for reprieve brought Orange Blood to life. “I was definitely drawn to the color orange,” explains lead singer Matt Quinn. “When we were in the desert, everything revolved around the sun. I started playing with the idea that the light we see is this sort of orange blood that runs through all of us and gives life to everything it touches.”

“Our last album was a breakup record,” notes Matt. “It had a darker feel. When we were in Joshua Tree, there were so many sad things in the world. We wanted to build something that found beauty in the fact the world has always been crazy. We were trying to find a way to be present enough to appreciate our surroundings even if they’re in decay.” Returning to Philadelphia, they put the finishing touches on the album in a house with the full lineup and longtime producer and collaborator Caleb Nelson.

The Philadelphia quintet—Matt Quinn [vocals, guitar], Sam Cooper [guitar], Sotiris Eliopoulos [drums], Jackie Miclau [keys, piano], and Michael Byrnes [bass]— take their name from the quiet rural town in southwest Pennsylvania, about four hours from their Philadelphia base. Forming in 2016, they made their mark two years later when their self-titled Mt. Joy debut album spun off "Silver Lining," an uplifting power ballad that went to #1 at AAA radio (Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay) and has eclipsed over 120 million Spotify streams to date. Their second album, Rearrange Us (2018) drew widespread critical raves. Over the past four years, Mt. Joy has amassed over half a billion streams and have earned acclaim from NPR, Billboard, Rolling Stone, The Line of Best Fit, and more. The band has performed at a variety of festivals such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo and has toured with The Lumineers, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, The Revivalists, and The Head and The Heart. Additionally, the band has performed on Stephen Colbert, CBS Morning, Samantha Bee, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel, and Conan.
