Big city attractions with a small town flair

story by GLENDA WINDERS

For the past two years Muncie has held a festival called “Fire Up Dwntwn,” the perfect name for a place whose city center and its surroundings are already fired up and ready to enchant and entertain visitors. A stroll down Walnut Street, for example, will yield more shopping, activities and eateries than you can pack into a day.

Start at HeidiJHale Designs , home base of the local designer of the same name. Hale has journeyed to such far-flung destinations as Bali and Madagascar to look for the gems that she uses in her beautiful one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces that are surprisingly affordable.

HeidiJHale-Design-Muncie

“I want to make unusual things like you’d see in a larger city but priced for Indiana,” Hale said. “I make unique pieces that you can only find in Muncie.”

Those pieces include a “namedala” —your name made into a mandala—dramatic pendants, earrings, bracelets and more. What her store doesn’t have is the stiffness and formality you en- counter in some jewelry stores. Instead, she also stocks candles, soaps, pillows, cups and table linens in a welcoming environment where both of her parents are part of the staff.

Also on Walnut are Made in Muncie , where you can stop in and make your own pottery, and Debbie’s Handmade Soaps – cleansers and lotions created with sensitive skin in mind. And be sure to run upstairs to the Carrie Wright Silk Gifts and Gallery, where you’ll find elegant scarves, pillows, nightlights and bags – all made from hand-painted silk. If you’d like to learn to paint silk yourself, time your visit to take part in one of her classes.

muncie-more-love-mural

Step across Walnut and you’ll discover the gallery where the Muncie Arts and Culture Council is temporarily housing its art pieces while a perma- nent location is being renovated. This group, a partner of the City of Muncie, aims to spark diversity of thought by beautifying the city and engaging its cit- izens and visitors. One of their projects is a sculpture that now lights up Dave’s Alley , so named for David Letterman, who went to college here.

Nearby is the Cornerstone Center for the Arts , a restored Gothic Revival Masonic Temple whose graceful spaces are now used for art shows, theatrical performances, classes and special events. Within walking distance is the Muncie Civic Theatre , a Prohibition-era Vaudeville theater that is barrier-free and aims to engage everyone in putting on quality theatrical productions.

Muncie-Visitors-Center-Garfield

Also here is Canan Commons , a downtown green space with a performance stage that houses the free Three Trails Music Series in the summer. If you happen to visit in the winter, this is where you’ll find the city’s Christmas tree. And it’s all close to the Muncie Children’s Museum , where the goal is to make learning fun. Kids will enjoy working in and shopping at Marsh Market; driving a big rig; playing farmer, doctor, teacher or veterinarian; dressing up to perform on TV; and learning about nature in the Outdoor Learning Center’s tree house. If they’re 5 or under, a special Totspot will keep them entertained.

One of the people who is most enthusiastic about what the city has to offer is its mayor, Dan Ridenour.

Prairie-Creek-Reservoir-Muncie-Indiana

“Muncie is the perfect-sized community,” he said. “We have everything we need without the expense or traffic of bigger cities. We have an incredible trail system that includes the Cardinal Greenway , which at 62 miles is the longest in Indiana.”

He said people who visit, live, or retire here quickly get to know one another and take part in the goings-on around town. He points to the solar lights in Canan Commons and the fact that the city employs a full-time maintenance person to clean and repair downtown’s buildings and streets as evidence of Muncie’s livability.

Experiences are also here for the taking. Bryan Matheny is the owner and trainer at Perfect Fit Plus , where he’ll help you get into shape or guide you through a refreshing whole-body cryogenic treatment or relaxing compression therapy. Spend some time in their sauna or take a spin on their Peloton bike.

Rosebud-Coffee-House-Muncie-Indiana

If dancing is more your thing, stop in at Harmony Movement Studio . Here instructors such as Michele Owen will teach you to tango, salsa, line-dance, swing-dance and bellydance. They also offer tai chi and yoga, and they welcome drop-ins – even if you’re just here for the day.

The Marriott Courtyard at the Horizon Convention Center is a good location for exploring downtown since you can walk everywhere you want to go. The center also houses the Erskine Green Training Institute , whose mission is to empower people with disabilities to obtain meaningful employment.

Hungry yet? The downtown area and nearby environs offer more tasty places to eat than you’ll have time to sample. For a quick coffee, try one of the small- batch roasted varieties at The Caf- feinery . To add a sweet treat, there’s Rosebud , just a short drive away and cleverly located in a renovated bank. For a full-on breakfast or lunch, By Hand & Fork will whip up savory eggs, yummy pancakes and much more.

Downtown-Muncie-Indiana

Another good lunch place is brand- new Bloom , a collection of eateries under one roof. Their nachos are the best, and you can get popcorn, ice cream, and other snacks here, too. For a truly special dinner, Ron Lahody’s Trust Your Butcher Steakhouse will have you thinking you’re in New York City with cocktails, fine wines, and cooked-to-perfection steaks. Vera Mae’s Bistro is the place to go for chicken, seafood and pasta, and they do steaks, too. Lowery’s Home Made Candies will send you away with some of the best chocolates you have ever tasted. Muncie also hosts Indiana’s oldest LGTBQIA+ bar, the Mark III Taproom .

When you’ve seen downtown, how- ever, you still haven’t taken part in all that Muncie has to offer. Some of those trails the mayor mentioned connect with the Prairie Creek Reservoir , a park with 1,275 acres of water and 750 acres of beautifully landscaped and maintained land where you can enjoy whatever outdoor activity you prefer. This is the home of the annual Iron Man competition, and you can also swim, fish, boat, ride horseback, walk, run, bike and picnic.

muncie travel agency

Also outside the center of the city, where there is plenty of room to fly, is the Academy of Model Aeronautics and the accompanying National Model Aviation Museum . Come to watch model-builders compete with their crafts or browse through the museum to see models of all kinds.

For museum-lovers, Minnetrista is not to be missed. The 40-acre grounds on the White River are home to the legacy of the Ball family, whose glass-making operations have funded many of Muncie’s signature places and activities. In addition to a museum that tells the family’s story and offers changing exhibits are elaborate gardens and historic homes to explore. This is where PBS recorded many of Bob Ross’ TV programs, and “The Bob Ross Experience” allows you to tour the exhibit as well as sign up for a painting workshop or paint here on your own. Children will enjoy playing in toy-filled Betty’s Cabin and having interactive adventures in the gardens.

Ball-State-University-Fine-Arts

And we haven’t even gotten to Ball State University yet. In addition to musical events and sports com- petitions, the school is also home to the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse & Environmental Education Center located in scenic Christy Woods , a 17-acre outdoor classroom. The greenhouse contains some 2,000 orchids, the largest university-based Kcollection in the United States. Known as “the DOMA,” the university’s David Owsley Museum of Art might also have you thinking you’re in a much bigger city. The collection includes some 11,000 pieces from every continent and 5,000 years of civilization. The place to catch a bite when you’re finished here is Roots , which has good food, a full bar and a distinct “we’re on the campus” vibe.

Surprising and exciting Muncie offers all this and so much more. You’ll find that it isn’t just a travel destination: It’s an experience.

American airlines changes passenger rules for earning miles — and travel agencies are pissed.

American Airlines has multiple travel advisors up in arms after it announced plans to restrict AAdvantage Miles earnings for certain booking agencies.

The airline behemoth  announced  in February that flyers hoping to earn AAdvantage miles for their flights will have to do so directly through American, their airline partners, or preferred travel agencies recognized by the company.

The change will take effect on May 1, but American has yet to reveal which agencies will be included in its “preferred agencies.”

American Airlines announced in February that flyers hoping to earn AAdvantage miles for their flights will have to do so directly through American, their airline partners, or preferred travel agencies recognized by the company.

The change comes as part of the airline’s effort to minimize costs for agencies using older technology booking systems.

The airline has tried to convince agencies using the older booking systems to upgrade to newer platforms like the one American uses on its website.

While American  announced  a list would be shared in “late April,” agencies unsure if they’ll make the cut are expressing their distaste for the major change.

The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), Association of Canadian Travel Agencies and Advisors (ACTA), Foro Latinoamericano de Turismo (FOLATUR), and World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAA) emphasized that any plans to restrict their clients’ earning miles could be detrimental to their agencies.

“It’s clear from the consensus among WTAAA, ACTA and FOLATUR, representing travel professionals around the world, the detriment that American’s decision will have on the travel industry globally,” President and CEO of ASTA, Zane Kerby, told  Travel and Tour World .

American has yet to reveal which agencies will be included in its “preferred agencies.”

Kerby called out American for “operating in bad faith” and was “looking to pad its bottom line at the expense of our valued clients and the millions of consumers who rely on their trusted travel advisor.”

Henry Harteveldt, president of the travel industry market research firm Atmosphere Research Group, told  Fodor’s Travel  the move is a “very inward-looking” perspective on American Airlines.

“It’s not a very consumer-friendly approach, and American is being a bit of a bully here,” Harteveldt explained — adding the move will put loyalty airline members in the crossfire of the company’s dispute with agencies.

The change comes as part of the airline's effort to minimize costs for agencies using older technology booking systems.

Harteveldt believes the move is also being monitored by the company’s competitors, who may adopt the change if it’s a success or whose sales teams may swoop in to poach any American flyers unpleased with the new method.

“As risky as American’s actions are, a lot of airlines are watching to see if it works out well for them, because if it does, I would not be surprised to see United and Delta copy it in certain ways,” he told the outlet.

While the airline is deadset on the change, Brett Snyder — author of the popular travel industry blog Crankyflier and CEO of the travel assistance service Cranky Concierge — said the move could cause “confusion” for the company’s flyers who already are trying to navigate their “frequent changes.”

American Airlines said they change is set to take effect May 1.

“The biggest impact will likely be on business travelers who may not have a choice of where to book depending upon company policy,” Snyder told the outlet.

“The fact that American still hasn’t told everyone who is or is not preferred adds more to the confusion.”

As the airline industry waits to hear who American will list as their “preferred agencies,” occasional travelers may also feel the weight of the change, Snyder explained.

He worries that some agencies may not disclose that to their customers during the booking process.

World Travel Agents Associations Alliance calls itself the global voice of the travel agency distribution channel.

Also, the move could affect cruise lines that book airfares as part of their packages, who may opt against using certain agencies not listed as one of American’s preferred agencies.

The changes will only affect travelers who collect AAdvantage Miles for their flights on American.

Flyers using corporate accounts with American will continue to earn miles for their flights no matter which booking channel they use unless they book a Basic Economy fare.

Travelers collecting miles from other Oneworld partners—the global airline alliance American is a member of with 13 other Airlines, such as British Airways, Qatar Airways, and Malaysia Airlines—will continue to earn miles for American Airlines flights regardless of booking channel.

NOGALES , AZ – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) today announced that it will lead an expanded, multi-agency effort to target the transnational criminals funneling fentanyl from Mexico into American communities. Operation Plaza Spike targets the cartels that facilitate the flow of deadly fentanyl, as well as its analogs and precursors and tools to make the drugs. It is designed to disrupt operations in the “plazas,” cartel territories located directly south of the United States that are natural logistical chokepoints within the cartels’ operations. This is the next phase in CBP’s Strategy to Combat Fentanyl and Other Synthetic Drugs , a whole-of-government and international effort to anticipate, identify, mitigate, and disrupt illicit synthetic drug producers, suppliers, and traffickers.

Operation Plaza Spike will employ multiple tactics, including seizing illicit proceeds and scrutinizing related cross-border business entities and cross-border trade. Operation Plaza Spike includes releasing the name of the plazas’ senior ranking cartel officials, the “plaza bosses,” to increase public and law enforcement pressure on them. Plaza bosses control and profit from all illicit activity through the plaza – extortion, kidnapping, as well as the smuggling of humans, dangerous drugs, and firearms. CBP will leverage partnerships, authorities, and resources of other government agencies in our efforts to gather intelligence, disrupt and degrade illicit operations, and deliver legal consequences.

“So long as fentanyl and other illicit opioids wreak tragedy across American communities, the men and women of the Department of Homeland Security will remain unrelenting in their work stopping these deadly drugs from hitting our streets and taking lives,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “Operation Plaza Spike is a critical step in our ongoing whole-of-Department campaign to directly attack the transnational criminal organizations that peddle narcotics, death, and destruction for profit. We are sparing no effort to dismantle cartels and ensure everyone from kingpins to plaza bosses are brought to justice.”

CBP’s first target is the Nogales Plaza, located directly south of the border crossing at Nogales, Arizona. Sergio Valenzuela Valenzuela, aka Gio, the Nogales Plaza boss, was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2018 for his role as a Sinaloa Cartel Plaza Boss .

“We are entering the next phase in our fight against fentanyl: one where we are going after the plaza bosses, whose organizations are responsible for virtually everything that is smuggled into the United States. By targeting them for enforcement action, we can directly impact their operations and ability to traffic fentanyl into the United States, which makes its way into communities all across the country,” said Troy A. Miller, CBP Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner. “Sergio Valenzuela Valenzuela is the first plaza boss that we target, but he won’t be the last. Just as the men and women of CBP are steadfast in the fight against fentanyl - will be unrelenting in our pursuit of those people and organizations that threaten the safety and security of our people and our country.”

Valenzuela Valenzuela and his organization allegedly are responsible for moving thousands of pounds of fentanyl to the U.S. border. Nearly every day, CBP officers intercept fentanyl headed from Valenzuela Valenzuela’s plaza northbound through CBP ports of entry onward to cities across the United States.

Operation Plaza Spike is just the latest effort by CBP, an agency of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as part of this Administration’s efforts to stem the flow illicit opioids, including fentanyl, and cracking down on the Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs) that traffic them. Through a whole-of-government effort, the Department has stopped more illicit fentanyl and arrested more individuals for fentanyl-related crimes in the last two fiscal years than in the previous five years combined.

CBP is also in the midst of Operation Apollo, and announced today that it will expand into Arizona to continue gathering and utilizing intelligence, and focusing on state and local partnerships to interdict fentanyl. Operation Apollo was launched by CBP in Southern California in October 2023 as a counter-fentanyl joint operation. CBP has evaluated the successes and lessons learned from Operation Apollo, and Operation Apollo – Arizona is now replicating it within the Arizona corridor, integrating all local law enforcement resources in Arizona to interdict finished fentanyl products, illicit precursor chemicals, adulterants, pill press equipment, illicit proceeds, and weapons.

In addition to CBP’s efforts to target operations that move fentanyl north, as well as guns south, CBP will be leveraging partnerships, authorities, and resources of other government agencies.

In 2023, DEA seized a record 79.5 million fentanyl pills and nearly 12,000 pounds of fentanyl powder. Throughout Arizona the DEA Phoenix Field Division seized more than 42 million fentanyl pills last year.

“Fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat our nation has ever faced. The men and women of DEA are relentlessly focused on saving lives by defeating the two cartels responsible for the majority of fentanyl and methamphetamine poisoning our communities – the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels.” said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram . “DEA proactively investigates cartel members and associates, like Sergio Valenzuela Valenzuela, who allegedly oversee the transportation and distribution of these deadly drugs while interagency partners, like U.S. Customs and Border Protection, interdict shipments at the border before they enter our country. These partnerships ensure those responsible face justice for their crimes.”

As a collaborative partner, HSI will leverage its abilities, ample customs authorities, and investigative capabilities to continue to look at the TCOs supply and distribution chains, while taking dangerous, destructive, and deadly drugs off our streets together with the violence that comes with the illicit activities of these criminal enterprises. HSI Arizona has dedicated groups of special agents assigned to combat drug and human smuggling as well as southbound weapons and bulk cash smuggling.

“HSI stands at the ready to continue dedicating our resources, unique customs authorities and investigative capabilities toward joining our federal partners in not only disrupting the trafficking of lethal drugs into our country but capturing and prosecuting the plaza bosses who profit from poisoning our communities,” said HSI Countering Transnational Organized Crime Assistant Director Ricardo Mayoral . “We will leverage the combined strength of our partnered efforts to relentlessly pursue, disrupt and dismantle one of the most prolific and violent cartels in the world.”

With the launch of its updated Fentanyl Strategy CBP Strategy to Combat Fentanyl and Other Synthetic Drugs Report in fall 2023, CBP has continued to look at innovative ways to stop fentanyl trafficking. The agency continues to utilize its unique authorities and resources as the nation’s border security agency to lead the whole-of-government approach to dismantling the means and methods of the production and distribution of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids, in addition to its historic target of interdicting narcotics at the border of the United States.

CBP officials have previously targeted fentanyl interdictions along the southwest border of the United States during Operation Blue Lotus, Four Horsemen, and Rolling Wave as well as precursors and production materials used to make fentanyl during Operation Artemis . With this latest operation, CBP is utilizing another avenue to disrupt the networks that create and distribute these drugs.

CBP and DEA are also calling on the public to provide any relevant information they may have about Sergio Valenzuela Valenzuela, his movements, his associates, and his operation.
