Top 10 things to do in Flagstaff

Grand Falls

Once you’ve lived in a city long enough, it’s easy to dismiss the activities that others come from all over the world to enjoy as “for tourists.” At some point, it’s simpler to make excuses than to just go check it out.

I’m embarrassed to admit that it took me 10 years to visit The Museum of Northern Arizona, and it was only when out-of-town guests came to visit that I finally made a trip to Lowell Observatory. Let me tell you—I was kicking myself after the fact. The experiences were better than I could have imagined, and if I hadn’t spent the last decade making excuses, I would have enjoyed them much sooner (and probably more than once)!

For World Tourism Day, I’m here to tell you to stop with the excuses and, as Nike would say, JUST DO IT. We live in one of the prettiest towns in the world, and we are so lucky to call this magical place home. We’re even luckier that we have a variety of activities and day trip options within a short drive. To help you be a better tourist in your own town, I’ve put together a checklist of all my favorite things to do in Flagstaff. If there’s any on this list that you’ve been putting off, consider this the push you need to make it happen.

1. Go see (and hike) the Grand Canyon

Did you know less than 1 percent of the Grand Canyon’s five million annual visitors hike below the rim? As someone who visited the canyon more than half a dozen times before hiking in, take my word for it: it’s worth it. It really is hard to fully grasp the scale and scope of how grand the Grand Canyon really is from the rim. So, plan a trip to make the trek in. (Day hikes do not require a permit.) The most popular hike is Bright Angel Trail , which offers spectacular views, shade and bathrooms every mile and a half. If you’re not ready to commit to a full 15.3-mile hike, Ooh Ahh Point on the South Kaibab Trail is a much more manageable 1.8-mile out-and-back trail, that gets you just far enough below the rim to be able to appreciate the Grand Canyon in all its glory. Remember, pack more water than you think you’ll need—even the shorter hike is categorized as a moderately challenging route, and with little shade, it can be extra draining.

Grand Canyon

2. Spend a (preferably cloudless) night at Lowell Observatory

This astronomical observatory where Pluto was discovered is out of this world! OK, maybe not literally, but it provides the tools necessary to get a glimpse into it. This Flagstaff staple has been around for more than 125 years for good reason—it is overflowing with information, hands-on exhibits, lecture opportunities and telescope viewing. There truly is something for everyone to enjoy, and if you’re like me, you’ll be so jazzed about space and stars and galaxies after your visit that you can’t wait to go back. Don’t forget your ID when you visit so you can get the local discount

Plus! Construction is underway on a 40,000-square-foot facility that will be SIX TIMES the size of Lowell’s current visitor facility and will offer an open-air planetarium (with heated seats), a rocket-launching station for kids and the Universe Theater! I, for one, cannot wait.

3. Drive through Bearizona Wildlife Park

Bearizona is not your typical zoo. This 160-acre drive-thru experience allows you to get up-close and personal with wolves, bears, bison, mountain goats and more in their natural environments. (My colleague would tell you there’s nothing quite as exhilarating as having a 400-pound black bear post up on the hood of your car.) Plus, most of the animals you’ll see are rescues who would otherwise not survive in the wilderness. (Just read The NAU Review’s heartwarming story of Lucky the Elk .)

Arctic Wolves

4. Visit Meteor Crater

Did you know that Meteor Crater is the best-preserved meteorite impact site on Earth? It is so well preserved, in fact, that astronauts train here before visiting the Moon. The large depression is impressive in itself, but also on site is the Meteor Crater Museum that is packed full of historic photos, stories and exhibits.

Meteor Crater

5. Take a day trip to Sedona

Less than an hour’s drive from Flagstaff, Sedona is known for its red rock buttes, beautiful vistas and steep canyon walls. Whether you spend a hot day at Oak Creek, enjoy the breathtaking views from Cathedral Rock (my favorite Sedona hike) or mountain bike the abundance of singletracks, it is well worth a visit. Plus, with tons of local coffee shops, eateries and shopping in Uptown, it’s easy to spend a full day enjoying the vibrant arts community. Because there has been an increase in tourism over the last few years, it’s best to visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

6. Visit the Museum of Northern Arizona

If you’re interested at all in the history of northern Arizona, you must plan a visit to the museum. One of my favorite things about this museum is that the featured exhibits are always changing, so you can return multiple times a year and get a completely different experience. I was lucky enough to visit during “The Force Is With Our People” exhibit, and as someone who has an appreciation for “Star Wars,” it made learning about this region and land so much fun.

Museum of Northern Arizona

7. See Wupatki National Monument

This archaeological site , rich in Native American history, shows the remains of Pueblo communities that date back to the early 1100s. For those into photography, visit the monument at night. The ruins make for a beautiful foreground and the remote location ensures light pollution won’t get in the way of your star photos.

Wupatki National Monument

8. Hike the Lava Tubes

If you’ve never been on an underground hike, this is your chance! These lava tubes north of Flagstaff make for an epic adventure—they’re about a mile long, dark and cold and will leave you feeling like you’re in a different world. It’s worth noting that the terrain is very rocky, and you are required to crouch and slide your way over loose rocks and boulders. Make sure to pack a jacket, no matter what time of year you go—temperatures in the cave range from 35 to 45 degrees—and wear durable hiking shoes. And, with no natural light in the cave, it is recommended to bring at least three light sources a person, one of which should a headlamp. It will allow you to keep your hands free to maneuver the terrain.

Lava Tubes

9. Snap some photos at Grand Falls (aka Chocolate Falls)

This Instagram-worthy waterfall is wow-inducing and makes the wash-board dirt drive totally worth it. Before you visit Grand Falls , be sure it is running—it can range from a dry trickle to cascading falls. (Prime viewing times are after the snow melt in spring and throughout monsoon season). The view from the top is spectacular, but you won’t fully grasp the scale of the falls until you hike down the canyon. If you plan to hike, be sure to wear good shoes. Through it’s an easy, short trek, it tends to be pretty muddy (which is where the Chocolate in the name comes from). Don’t forget your camera and visit during sunrise or sunset to get the award-winning shots. It is worth noting that because Grand Falls is located on the Navajo Nation, backcountry day permits are required to visit and hike around the falls .

**Please note: Since this story was published, the falls were closed to the public at the beginning of 2023.

Grand Falls

10. Tour Riordan Mansion

Conveniently located just west of Northern Arizona University, this state historic park, which dates back to 1904, provides a glimpse into the homelife of Flagstaff entrepreneurs, the Riordan brothers. Much of Flagstaff today, including NAU, is reflective of their influence on the community. This beautiful, American Arts and Crafts-style architecture is full of preserved history that will transport you back in time.

  • Choose A Facility: Walkup Skydome Student-Athlete High Performance Center Rolle Activity Center Lumberjack Stadium Wall Aquatic Center Tennis Center Track & Field Throw Facility

Walkup Skydome

The J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome is home to the Northern Arizona football, men’s and women’s basketball, and indoor track & field. It is one of the most unique venues in all of college athletics will open for its 40th year as the entertainment center for northern Arizona. After a logo rebranding in April 2014, the Skydome turf was rebranded with NAU’s newest logo in the center of the field and the wordmark in both endzones. The building underwent a major renovation from Dec. 2010 - Sept. 9, 2011, at a cost of $26 million. The scope of the project included bringing the fire, life and safety up to code while remodeling the bathrooms, concourse, offices, suites, locker rooms and press box. The athletic training and equipment on the main floor were also remodeled and three elevators were added to the complex. Fans enter the building to a panoramic view of the field on the east and west concourses. Capacity was reduced to 10,000 with 21-inch wide chair back seating being added. The construction of the Skydome began in the fall of 1975, and the facility was completed in September 1977. Seating capacity for football originally was 15,000 and 7,000 for basketball.

Once the largest wood-span structure of its kind in the world, the Skydome was built at a cost of more than $8 million. It covers an area of 6.2 acres, with the roof spanning more than 500 feet and rising 142 feet above the playing surface. The Skydome showcases the REALGRASS™ surface installed in the spring of 2008 by the Hellas Construction firm of Austin, Texas. The carpet, the Matrix version of the brand REALGRASS™ cost close to $1 million. The REALGRASS™ Matrix system is comprised of a monofilament spinneret yarn in two different sizes and colors. It is the same installed for the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium.

With the 2001 renovation to the Skydome floor, the 96,000-square foot surface was covered with Mondo. The track contains a six-lane, 300-meter non-banked loop (eight sprinting lanes) with the infield containing enough area for six NCAA-standard basketball and volleyball courts, as well as two regulation tennis courts. Track and field specific, the facility now has 12-month training capabilities. When covered for football with artificial turf, the Skydome supports a practice pole vault pit and a long/triple jump runway, as well as a lane for sprinting and hurdles. When the turf is up, the facility can be used for intramural and camp sports, and has enough room for a varsity soccer practice. The roof was also resurfaced during the summer of 2000 and the astroturf was replaced in 2002 from a surface that was in the Tropicana Dome, the home of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The concourse contains offices, meeting rooms, restrooms and concession stands. Located on the dome’s floor level are fully equipped locker rooms and state-of-the-art athletic training and weight rooms.  During the summer of 1997, the dome underwent a $1 million lighting renovation that further enhanced the Skydome’s lure for television cameras.  Fresh air and heat come through 19 large ducts, maintaining a constant temperature of 72 degrees. The first NAU sporting event held in the Skydome was a Lumberjack win over Montana in football on a last-second field goal, 25-24. The first NAU basketball game was a 101-76 triumph over Alaska Anchorage.

Special athletics events held in the Skydome include a Division II football playoff game in 1977, Division I FCS playoff games in 1996, 2003, and 2013, a first-round National Invitation Tournament basketball game in 1986 and 2006, the 1987, 1997, 1998 and 2006 Big Sky Conference men’s basketball tournaments, two rounds of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament in 2015, and the 1984, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2015 Big Sky Conference indoor track and field championship meets. In 2003, comedian Jay Leno appeared at the Skydome in a special Family Weekend event.

Many special events, including concerts, trade shows and high-school state tournaments are held in the Skydome each year. It has previously served as the training camp home of the Arizona Cardinals, and is the current training camp home of the Phoenix Suns. In May of 2000, the facility hosted a WNBA exhibition game between the Phoenix Mercury and the Detroit Shock.

NAU is one of 11 universities to own its own domed facility. The others are Idaho, Idaho State, Minnesota, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, Northern Michigan, North Dakota State, South Dakota, East Tennessee State and Syracuse.

Parents

Can I fill out an application online? You can access the online application by clicking the “Apply Online” link at the top of every page.

Can I be my own guarantor? A resident can act as their own guarantor if they can show documentation as outlined in the lease agreement that they have income greater than three times the rental installment.

What paperwork is required with a guarantor? The guarantor will need to sign the guaranty agreement. If the resident is not of legal age to execute a contract, the guarantor will be required to sign both the lease and guaranty agreement.

What is a guarantor? To mitigate the risk of delinquent or defaulting residents, we require applicants to provide someone to guarantee their housing contract.

When is a guarantor required? All residents require a guarantor to complete the guaranty agreement.

What is an individual lease? An individual lease provides each resident with their own separate lease agreement and responsibility for his/her rental installments and applicable utility and parking charges. By signing an individual lease, you are only taking responsibility for your rental installments and lease terms and will not be held liable for any delinquent amounts owed by your roommate(s).

Can I setup recurring payments? Yes! Save time in the future and never miss a rental installment by setting up recurring payments. You just need a few minutes and your checking account or card info to setup payments. Click here to login to the Resident Portal and get started.

Do you send me a bill every month? No, bills are not sent to residents each month, but you may see payment reminders posted around the property.

How can I make a payment? We accept credit cards, debit cards and ACH payments online through our Resident Portal . We are unable to accept cash.

What is an installment? The typical lease term is approximately 11.5 months of occupancy which coincides with the university's academic calendar. The resident is charged a total rent amount for the contracted occupancy period. The lease agreement will reflect the total rent amount typically divided into 12 equal installments due August 1 - July 1. These installments do not represent a monthly rent amount and are not prorated.

When are the installments due? Installments are due on the 1st of every month per the payment schedule outlined in the lease agreement.

Are there insurance requirements for signing a lease at the community? Yes! The community requires all residents to obtain minimum coverage of $100,000 in Legal Liability to Landlord (LLL) insurance. There are multiple options to satisfy this lease requirement: Option 1 : Residents can purchase the policy of their choosing so long as it satisfies the minimum insurance requirements above as further described in the Required Insurance Addendum made a part of the lease. Residents must submit proof of acceptable insurance to American Campus Communities via LeaseTrack at leasetrack.ai/acc or [email protected] . Option 2 : If you do not provide proof of insurance with the requisite coverage, American Campus Communities may satisfy the insurance requirement for you by placing coverage for your unit under a LLL policy as described in the Required Insurance Addendum found in your lease. You will be charged a monthly for premium, taxes and an administrative fee for, among other things, the expense of processing monthly payments and administering the program.

Am I allowed to request a specific unit? You can list your preferences on your profile card and housing application and we will do our best to place you in the unit that fits those requests. All requests are served on a first-come, first-served basis and are taken in order based on the date your lease was received.

Can I request specific roommates? Yes, you can list the roommates you have chosen on your profile card when completing your lease. It is important that all roommates list each other and that all requests are mutual.

Do you have a roommate matching service? Yes, you will be given a profile card when completing your lease contract that will inquire as to your study habits, social habits, and hobbies to help us match you with residents that have similar preferences in your floor plan.
