Best Places To Buy Souvenirs In New York

Before we dive into what to buy in NYC, we want to tell you the best places to buy amazing souvenirs! Here’s our list:

MoMA Design Store

One of the best New York souvenir shops is the MoMA Design Store. Housed in the Museum of Modern Art , this store is the perfect place to find an art-inspired momento.

Holiday Markets

If you’ll be visiting New York in winter, don’t miss the holiday and Christmas markets that pop up around the city from mid-November through early January.

The holiday markets in Bryant Park, Union Square, and Columbus Circle are some of the best places to buy good New York souvenirs around the holidays, including many that are unique and handmade.

Chelsea Market

Sprawling Chelsea Market is one of the best places to buy souvenirs in New York City. With dozens of food vendors and retail stalls, you can pick up tasty snacks to bring home from New York — or peruse art, jewelry, and other gifts.

The Strand Bookstore

The Strand , an independent bookstore that has been around for nearly 100 years, is a great place to shop for souvenirs in New York. A canvas tote bag from the Strand is one of the best souvenirs from NYC for book-lovers. You can also find many books about New York that make for excellent gifts.

New York Transit Museum

If you’re looking for cool souvenirs from New York, check out the gift shop at the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn . You can find all sorts of quirky New York subway-themed souvenirs, like t-shirts, keychains, phone cases, and more.

Manhattan ‘s Chinatown neighborhood is a unique place to shop for souvenirs and find some of the cheapest souvenir shops in NYC. Although it has a notorious reputation for selling “designer” handbags, sunglasses, and watches at low prices, it’s a wise idea to steer clear of these because they are knockoffs of questionable quality.

Instead, spend some time roaming the side streets of Chinatown and you’ll discover small, locally-owned shops selling everything from porcelain to tea and beyond.

Artists & Fleas

One reason why New York is so popular is its creative locals. With that in mind, possibly the best place to buy NYC souvenirs is Artists & Fleas , particularly if you love buying straight from local makers. Here you’ll peruse artisan wares — from handmade accessories to clean beauty to unique jewelry and beyond — that show off the creativity of local New Yorkers.

Essex Market

Located on the Lower East Side, Essex Market is a food market where you can pick up delicious edible treats that you won’t find in typical New York City souvenir shops. You can find locally-made products like chocolate, coffee, tea, and cheese.

Tenement Museum Store

NYC wouldn’t be what it is without its immigrants, and the Tenement Museum is the best place to learn how immigration throughout history has helped to shape the city.

Not only is exploring preserved tenement buildings from the late 19th century a highlight, but so is their gift shop, which sells books written by immigrants, jewelry inspired by immigrant stories, and apparel and accessories that celebrate the Lower East Side neighborhood where the museum is located.

Industry City

Whether you’re looking for New York food souvenirs, locally-made accessories, or gifts that support local makers, Industry City in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood is a must. This experiential complex on the water showcases food, drink, art, entertainment, and creativity. Not only is it a great place if you’re looking for non-touristy things to do in NYC , but also if you’re searching for truly authentic New York City souvenirs.

FAO Schwarz

While the items sold at this iconic NYC toy store aren’t all locally-made, if you’re looking for New York souvenirs for kids, the little ones in your life will undoubtedly love the finds at FAO Schwarz — which is the oldest toy store in the United States !

Housing Works

Housing Works is an NYC-based nonprofit fighting AIDS and homelessness. They operate various shops around the city, from book stores to thrift shops and more, and buying from them allows you to support a great cause.

The Taste NY store in Grand Central Terminal features all sorts of delicious locally-made products, from wines to cheeses to olive oils to chips and beyond. Note that this store has locations all around New York State , so keep your eyes peeled if you head out on an Upstate New York road trip from NYC and are looking for food-related souvenirs.

Best New York Souvenirs & Authentic NYC Gifts

Now that we’ve gone over some of the best New York souvenir shops in the city, let’s discuss what to actually buy. The following list contains a mix of classic NYC memorabilia, locally-made gifts, and truly unique New York souvenirs you won’t find on any other lists!

NYC Souvenirs That Share Your Trip Story

1. new york city photos.

Skip the New York City souvenir shops and typical New York themed gifts and have something made just for you: photos of your incredible time in NYC!

Shameless plug: Jessie’s company, NYC Photo Journeys, offers private NYC photo tours that allow you to visit scenic spots with a local guide and photographer. Not only do you get a tour, but you’ll leave with stunning photos of your group to keep. It’s a great way to create — and preserve — memories from your trip to New York .

Alternatively, if you don’t care so much about the tour and just want to focus on getting as many gorgeous photos as possible, you can opt for a professional NYC photoshoot , which also includes a pre-shoot call to go over your goals for the session!

2. Your own 3D-printed bobblehead

One very unique NYC attraction is Gulliver’s Gate on Staten Island , within walking distance of the ferry terminal. Here, you can explore an entire world created with thousands of 3D-printed miniatures.

After seeing the seven continents as well as iconic New York City spots like Grand Central Terminal and Times Square , you can opt to have your own 3D-printed bobblehead created. Talk about unique NYC souvenirs!

3. Commission a poem

If you’d like to support local artists while creating a keepsake, consider commissioning a poem from the Poetry Society of New York .

While you can hire them for events, you can also hire a poet to help you create an impactful gift that shares the story of your trip to NYC!

4. Turn your photos into NYC memorabilia

While you can of course purchase New York memorabilia, another idea is using your own photos to create personalized NYC souvenirs that remind you of your trip. Platforms like Canvas Pop and ShutterFly allow you to create everything from Canvas prints to photo albums to mugs.

Alternatively, you can use a free tool like Canva to turn your photos into cool designs. For example, click here to check out their postcard templates or search something like “vintage postcards” in their search bar.

This is a great way to use the photos you get from an NYC Photo Journeys tour or shoot !

5. DIY NYC souvenir

Instead of buying good souvenirs from NYC, why not make them? Booking a local class where you actually create something is not only a great way to leave with an authentic souvenir, but also a fun way to explore local culture — not to mention it’s a smart option if you’re  visiting NYC alone and want to meet other people.

A few of the many class options to choose from in NYC include East Village Hats (hatwork), La Mano Pottery (pottery), Raaka (chocolate), Painting Lounge (sip and paint), and Brooklyn Brainery (everything).

NYC Souvenirs That Celebrate Art & Culture

6. coffee table book.

One of the best souvenirs from NYC to remind you of your visit long after you return home is a coffee table book filled with New York photography.

Check out places like the MoMA Design Store as well as local book shops like Assouline or Rizzoli to find stunning coffee table books you can buy and bring home with you.

7. Flea market finds

Are you looking for unique Brooklyn souvenirs to take home? Go hunting for treasures at Brooklyn Flea , the largest flea market in New York City.

Open on weekends in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, this flea market is the place to go to pick up one-of-a-kind vintage clothing, home decor, art, antiques, and collectables.

You’ll find many unique gifts from New York there!

8. Records by local musicians

If you love music, consider supporting New York’s local musicians through your souvenir purchase.

While there are a number of record stores that sell music by local artists — like Record Grouch in Brooklyn — you can also see a live show at one of the many venues across the city and grab a copy of their tunes afterward.

A few neighborhoods known for their live music offerings include the Lower East Side, the West Village, Harlem, and Williamsburg.

9. Keith Haring merchandise

Nothing says New York like the bold, graffiti-inspired pop art of Keith Haring. This prominent NYC artist whose colorful work became famous in the 1980s was committed to making art accessible to all.

Although his physical Pop Shop in SoHo is no longer open, the Keith Haring Foundation runs an online store selling merchandise like t-shirts, tote bags, and other accessories featuring his vibrant work.

10. Humans of New York book

The Humans of New York book is one of the best New York gift ideas. It started as an online photography project by Brandon Stanton. He quickly grew an audience of millions on his Facebook page, where he shared heartfelt stories paired with authentic portrait photos of New Yorkers.

His book Humans of New York is a great gift that captures the essence of the city through moving photos and stories.

11. Art or photography prints

Searching for cool things to buy in New York? Pick up some unique art or photography prints to hang in your home!

Art can be one of the more expensive things to buy in New York, but the good news is there are options for every budget. Flea markets, art fairs, and college student shows are all sources of affordably-priced art in New York City, while art museum gift shops sell great high-quality prints.

You can also wander around Washington Square Park to find really unique art made by locals, and usually at budget-friendly prices.

These art pieces and prints are some of the things you can only buy in New York. They’re truly unique!

Food & Drink Souvenirs From New York

12. historic chocolate.

Li-Lac Chocolates dates back to 1923 and is Manhattan’s oldest chocolate house. Today, their chocolate is still handmade in small batches, using the original recipes that New Yorkers have loved for over a century.

13. The Ellis Island Immigrant Cookbook

New York is known for its food: the many unique NYC restaurants , Instagram-worthy eateries , the boozy brunch spots , and, of course, the endless opportunities to try flavors from around the world.

The Ellis Island Immigrant Cookbook by Tom Bernardin not only allows you to bring these flavors home but also discover the story of NYC through your tastebuds.

This helps to make this book one of the best food souvenirs from New York you can buy! You can grab your copy at the Tenement Museum gift shop, among other places.

14. Murray’s Cheese

Visiting Murray’s Cheese is one of the top things to do in the West Village , as the shop has been around since 1940 and sells the best cheeses in the city, many of which are locally sourced. If you’re looking for an edible souvenir from New York, this is sure to be a hit.

Murray’s cheeses are some of the most famous products made in New York.

15. Locally-made cookies

One of the best food souvenirs from New York that you can bring home is a box full of cookies from a popular NYC bakery. Cookies are easier to transport than many other foods, and will be good for a couple days after you get home.

Some of the best, most decadent cookies in the city can be found at Levain Bakery, Chip City, and Milk Bar.

If you’ve never heard of a bialy, it’s a round bread that comes from Polish Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine.

It may look like a bagel at first, but it’s actually boiled and doesn’t have a hole in the middle. Instead, the center has an indent that typically features ingredients like roasted onions or garlic — though some bakers like to get creative with other options like sesame, sun-dried tomato, and olive.

One of these bakers is Kossar’s Bakery & Bialys , which dates back to 1936 and is the oldest bialy shop in the USA.

Head to this Lower East Side bakery to fill a bag with their delicious bialys — though make sure to buy them on the last day of your trip and share them with loved ones as soon as you get back. Like most bread products, bialys are best eaten while fresh!

17. Pizza dough

Often, the best NYC gifts are the ones people will actually use — or eat! While it would be tough to bring home an actual pizza and have it still taste good, you can instead head to a pizzeria and get dough to take with you.

One of the things that makes New York pizza so amazing is the dough, so you’ll still be able to share a taste of quintessential New York by making a homemade pizza at home.

As with the bialys mentioned above, make sure to buy the dough on the last day of your trip and cook it as soon as you’re back for maximum freshness.

18. Rooftop Reds wine

Located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Rooftop Reds is the world’s first rooftop vineyard . It’s the perfect spot to sip a glass of dry rose on a warm day while taking in views of Lower Manhattan. And if you’re looking for New York souvenirs related to food and drink, it’s a top pick!

Keep in mind, this isn’t NYC’s only winery. A few others of note include City Winery in the Meatpacking District, Brooklyn Winery in Williamsburg , and Red Hook Winery in Red Hook .

19. Long Island City beer

More of a beer drinker? New York City is home to numerous breweries, particularly in the neighborhoods of Bushwick (Brooklyn) and Long Island City ( Queens ).

In fact, one of the top things to do in Long Island City is sip your way through the LIC Brewery Trail, which features at least six unique breweries within walking distance — not to mention locally-famous SingleCut Brewery in the adjacent Astoria neighborhood.

Breweries on the trail include:

  • Fifth Hammer
  • ICONYC Brewing
  • Rockaway Brewering Company
  • Big aLICe Brewing
  • LIC Beer Project

Wander the trail, choose your favorite, and buy a six-pack to take home to a fellow beer lover (or, of course, to enjoy yourself).

20. Barrow’s Intense Ginger Liqueur

While we’re on the subject of food and drink souvenirs from New York, we have to highlight Barrow’s Intense Ginger Liqueur — a bold liqueur made with real ginger that can really spice up your at-home bar cart!

Their tasting room is located in Brooklyn’s Industry City, so head there for one of their delicious craft cocktails before getting a bottle (or two!) to take home as a souvenir.

21. Whiskey from Kings County Distillery

Kings County Distillery is NYC’s oldest whiskey distillery, and was the first to open after Prohibition in 2010. A bottle of one of their bourbons, ryes, or whiskeys makes for some of the best gifts in NYC.

Bonus: You can tour their facility when you visit or enjoy a cocktail or flight in their tasting room.

22. Everything bagel seasoning

New York is famous for its bagels, but it can be hard to take those home with you, especially if you’re flying or limited on luggage space.

While you should definitely sample as many freshly made bagels as possible while in New York, pick up some everything bagel seasoning before you go.

This seasoning is incredibly popular in NYC, and makes even a plain store-bought bagel taste like a real New York bagel once you get home.

It’s one of the best things to buy in NYC for foodies!

23. Candy from an iconic NYC shop

One of the best NYC souvenirs for kids is candy from Dylan’s Candy Bar . This chain of boutique candy stores was founded in New York City, and is a paradise for anyone with a sweet tooth. Stop in to fill up a box with candy to bring home as a reminder of your sweet adventures in NYC.

24. Locally-roasted coffee

The best souvenir shops in NYC may just be the coffee roasters, each of which has its own unique selling point.

One to get on your radar is Café Grumpy , which began as a beloved Brooklyn cafe since 2005 and now has locations around NYC.

Not only do their cafes have a chill and welcoming vibe, but they sell delicious single origin coffees as well as blends that make for the perfect gifts.

Try their Heartbreak Espresso, which blends beans from Ethiopia and Central America.

25. Andrew’s Honey

Honey laundering is an international issue, and you have to be careful when grabbing that plastic bear off the grocery store shelf.

Luckily, Andrew’s raw local honey isn’t just ethically-made, but it also shares the stories of various New York neighborhoods.

In fact, each honey is named after a specific NYC hood, with honey harvested on rooftops from that specific location for a hyper-local treat that also makes for the perfect NYC souvenir.

28. New York themed toys

If you’re looking for good souvenirs from New York specifically for children, consider some fun toys that also share the culture and character of the city.

For instance, at the Tenement Museum , you can buy everything from FDNY fire trucks and pull-back taxi cabs to One World Trade Center building kits and subway map puzzles to paper dolls that help kids understand the history of immigration in NYC.

29. NYC-inspired phone case

A phone case is a simple and inexpensive NYC souvenir. Every souvenir shop in the city sells them, but if you’re looking for something special, check out the MetroCard-themed phone cases at the New York Transit Museum gift shop or get an art-inspired phone case from the MoMA Design Store.

30. NYC charm bracelet

Jewelry brands like Kate Spade, Alex & Ani, and Jet Set Candy all sell beautiful NYC charm bracelets if you are looking for a souvenir that you can wear every day. These also make a great gift for someone visiting New York or moving there.

31. NYC coordinates bracelet

If you love unique jewelry, one piece that makes a statement about New York without being too tacky is a GPS coordinates bracelet from Isabelle Grace Jewelry.

While their actual shop is located in Massachusetts, they make stunning handmade jewelry that can be customized to your liking.

While Jessie has their Coordinates Cuff , they also sell a Coordinates Charm Necklace that makes for a meaningful NYC themed gift.

Where to Go Shopping in NYC: Our 20 Picks

By Andrea Whittle

New York City Shopping No. 6

In an era when pretty much anything can be two-day-shipped to your house and high streets in major cities around the world are lined with a lot of the same storefronts, the point of shopping IRL seems increasingly moot. But once in a while, you walk into a store that feels like a genuine discovery, where browsing the shelves and racks stocked with things you can’t find anywhere else is an activity in itself. Beyond the Zara-fied scrums of Soho and 5th Avenue, New York City is still filled with these kinds of places—in fact, we could go on forever listing hundreds of niche shops, from a showroom that specializes in animal skulls to an emporium devoted entirely to high-end buttons. But here, we tried to distill it down to an array of stores that have a distinctively New York identity, where you’ll find exciting clothes, gifts and decor by independent designers (plus a few wild cards, like an old school Upper East Side pharmacy and a beloved Tribeca party store). Here, our take on the best shopping in New York City.

ABC Carpet Home

ABC Carpet & Home Arrow

ABC Carpet & Home is first and foremost a furniture showroom and rug store. But the shop also stocks original decor and accessories from around the world, hippie-chic fine jewelry, and luxury bath and beauty products with a wellness bent. Unless you're looking to furnish your home, stick to the main floor, where you'll find a trove of jewelry, candles, tabletop wares, objets d'art, and apothecary items. Bed linens, bath towels, and throw pillows upholstered in fringed velvet and intricate embroidery are on the basement level. And if you get hungry, three onsite restaurants, Abc Kitchen, Abc Cocina, and Abcv, all from by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, are destinations in themselves.

Bird Brooklyn

Bird, a cozy, multi-brand women's boutique beloved by trendy Brooklyn moms, is known for its cheerful selection of goods from indie designers. You'll find the latest bags and ready-to-wear from Mansur Gavriel, block-heeled boots and sandals, whatever this year's trendy statement coat is, pleated separates by Issey Miyake, and lots of flowy, printed dresses from No.6 and Rachel Comey. Don't miss the delicately painted and gilded ceramic cups and bowls by Suzanne Sullivan.

New York City Shopping Roman and Williams Guild

Roman and Williams Guild Arrow

Roman and Williams Guild, a furniture showroom, café, florist, and home decor shop in one, is the first retail outpost from architecture firm Roman and Williams (the team behind oft-instagrammed restaurant and hotel interiors like Le Coucou and the Freehand). Basically, if you've ever eaten or spent the night in one of the firm's spaces and thought to yourself, "I'd like my house to be more like this," this is the store for you. If you stop in, take a moment to run your hands over the sheepskins draped over the display beds in the back, and to smell the in-house scented candles.

Default

Zitomer Arrow

Zitomer is the ultimate version of a uniquely Manhattan phenomenon: The fancy, retro pharmacy where you can get your prescriptions filled but also easily drop $600 on velvet headbands. This wacky three-story storefront on Madison Avenue is a microcosm of everything that's simultaneously appealing and vexatious about the Upper East Side. You'll find lots of old-school hair accessories, fancy European toothpaste, an extensive lineup of bath and body products from Molton Brown and Kiehl's, decorative compact mirrors, and zip pouches that say things like "But First, Xanax."

New York City Shopping Artists and Fleas

Artists & Fleas Arrow

Artists & Fleas permanent set up in Soho (there is also a weekends-only marketplace in Williamsburg) is a great place to pick up souvenirs made by local artisans. The booths are run by young entrepreneurial types selling original, relatively inexpensive jewelry, decor, or Brooklyn-y souvenirs, like cheeky, screen-printed T-shirts or soy-wax candles. There's also a solid vintage selection, with permanent booths like Thriftwares selling on-trend bags and out-there dresses.

New York City Shopping No. 6

No. 6 Arrow

If you were asked to describe the platonic ideal of an indie designer boutique, you'd get pretty close to No.6. Racks filled with drapey, delicately ruched, and patterned clothes rub elbows with pots of meandering ivy in a white-walled room filled with natural light. Alongside a house line, the shop stocks clothes and accessories from other like-minded designers: raffia tote bags by Karakoram and swingy printed dresses by Atelier Delphine. But No.6 is best known for its wooden-heeled clogs, which have become a calling card for certain Brooklyn creatives.

New York City Shopping Coming Soon

Coming Soon Arrow

In a world where contemporary high-end homeware stores range from aggressively minimalist to downright somber, Coming Soon, a Lower East Side shop, is a jam-packed, Technicolor breath of fresh air. You could walk in, close your eyes, spin around and point, and you'd land on a perfectly original gift every time. It's fresh, cheeky, and cheerful, with a lot of stuff you didn't even know you needed, but once you've seen it, you absolutely have to have.

John Derian Company Arrow

John Derian Company, an East Village home decor brand, is a maximalist fantasyland filled with delightful, strange, wonderful things, from cake-shaped candles and plush velvet turtles to 19th-century French market baskets. The block feels like a mini fiefdom of shops, with the original store, a furniture showroom, and a dry goods shop. Alongside Derian's own charming decoupage paperweights and decorative dishes, the main store stocks marbled ceramics and incense by Astier de Villatte, kooky Italian candles shaped like frosted layer cakes or wheels of cheese, and matchboxes too pretty to keep hidden in a drawer.

New York City Shopping Opening Ceremony

Opening Ceremony Arrow

Opening Ceremony has been one of the city's most consistent arbiters of cool since it opened in 2002. Stocked with clothes and accessories that are colorful, often funky, occasionally over-the-top, and edgy—but never self-serious—it's partially responsible for the transformation of Howard Street into a Murderers' Row of indie designer boutiques; in fact, some people jokingly refer to the area as "Clout Alley." In short: it's the epitome of Downtown cool. (P.S. Make sure to check out the basement—that's where all the shoes and sale merch live.)

New York City Shopping Warm

As its name suggests, Warm stocks clothes made for hot weather, books and decor meant to cozy with at home, and products and candles that smell like a day at the beach. The overall vibe is summery and downright celebratory, a riot of bright colors, punchy patterns, and plush textures. You'll find flowy, bohemian resort wear that reads as California fancy; on the racks, jeans by Re/Done hang next to cashmere wrap cardigans by Ryan Roche and maxi dresses by Raquel Allegra. On the tables, smudge sticks share space with Wary Meyers candles.

New York City Shopping EAT Gifts

E.A.T. Gifts Arrow

At E.A.T. Gifts, a quirky gift and party-supplies store, you'll find stylish greeting cards, miniature dachshund figurines, pillows shaped like sushi rolls, and lots of novelty mugs, cosmetic pouches, and stationery. A good portion of the shop gets changed around depending on the upcoming holiday—they're particularly good around Valentine's Day, when you can pick up hand-packed sacks of tinfoil-wrapped chocolate hearts, or Christmas, when they stock delicate German glass ornaments and beautiful wrapping paper. Make sure you look up and down: Shelves are stocked floor-to-ceiling with a dizzying variety of stuff.

Maryam Nassir Zadeh Arrow

There are plenty of painfully hip, but ultimately mediocre, boutiques on the Lower East Side. This is not one of them. The overall vibe at Maryam Nassir Zadeh is meditative, studied, and genuinely cool. Just perusing the racks of the airy shop on Norfolk street yields some genuine fashion revelations, ones gleaned from Zadeh's own elegantly spare collection and other, lesser-known designers like Prisca Vera and Bless. Don't leave without trying on the ballet flats.

Clothing in Dover Street Market New York

Dover Street Market New York Arrow

Dover Street is more than just a luxury department store; it’s a fashion-meets-art exhibition space. Featured designers configure their own display areas, allowing the shopper to interact with the clothes in a holistic manner that takes you inside the designer’s world—as opposed to just picking through dresses hanging on a metal rack. Also don’t miss the ground-floor café, Rose Bakery.

New York City Shopping Totokaelo

Totokaelo Arrow

Originally based in Seattle, Totokaelo brought its unique approach to multi-brand retail to Soho in 2015. Somewhere between indie boutique and designer department store, the shop stocks clothing, accessories, and home decor with a distinctively modern, highbrow point of view. Dresses by Zero + Maria Cornejo and Collina Strada share space with Noguchi lamps and ceramics, which look like they came straight out of a Morandi painting. The whole place, in fact, feels like an art gallery. Don't leave without admiring the avant garde shoe collection.

New York City Shopping Housing Works

Housing Works Soho Thrift Shop Arrow

The Soho location of Housing Works, a beloved local thrift chainlet (there are other outposts Uptown, in Chelsea, and in Park Slope) is where you have the best chance of finding real bargain treasure. Like any thrift store, there's plenty of stuff that ranges from just OK to downright junky, but the shop is also known as a dumping ground for local fashionistas who are trying to make space in their closets. So you just might find a pair of good-as-new Maryam Nassir Zadeh mules, or a faux fur teddy coat. Remember: Take your time, and don't be disappointed if you don't find anything on your first visit.

Balloon Saloon

Balloon Saloon Arrow

If you're walking down West Broadway, the array of gigantic pool floats—shaped like doughnuts, stacks of dollar bills, slices of pizza, and emojis—hanging from the awning make the aptly named Balloon Saloon impossible to miss. But the balloons are just the beginning. Inside, the shop is stocked floor-to-ceiling with gifts, fun toys, and wildly original party supplies, including ladybug-shaped piñatas, candy cigarettes, Groucho Marx glasses, jokey picture books, Spiderman toys, raffia party hats, and silly birthday cards.

Blue Tree Arrow

Blue Tree is wonderfully impossible to categorize. Calling it a gift shop would cheapen it, but that's sort of the function it serves for the neighborhood—a place to buy thoughtful, unique presents that you really won't find anywhere else. In front, cases filled with obscure, decadent jewelry line the walls. Toward the back, you'll find everything from whisper-thin cashmere shawls, fig-scented Sicilian soaps, cheeky novelty socks, hourglasses filled with neon sand, luxurious flannel PJs, and notebooks wrapped in marbled paper.

New York City Shopping Rachel Comey

Rachel Comey Arrow

Slightly hidden from the Soho fray on an unassuming stretch of Crosby Street, the Rachel Comey boutique feels like an oasis. Comey's clothing is thoughtful and feminine but never prissy, beautifully cut, and texturally sumptuous. And the store itself is stunning: pebbled concrete floors, low-slung leather seating, and fitting rooms that look like they belong in a Milanese palazzo—a Milanese palazzo that got a particularly good mid-century renovation. If you're looking for a show-stopping party look, you've come to the right place.

New York City Shopping Bergdorf Goodman

Bergdorf Goodman Arrow

Of all the famous New York City department stores, Bergdorf Goodman is arguably the most iconic. And unlike some of its peers, it delivers on the promise of serious luxury and old-school glamour. You may not discover any cutting-edge young designers here, but you'll get a kick out of the whole experience: Bags and jewelry are displayed like works of art, the beauty department is a treasure trove of scent and color, and some would describe a visit to the shoe salon as a quasi-religious experience. It's not entirely Manolos and Oscar de la Renta cocktail dresses though (but mostly it is), lower-priced contemporary collections, like Ganni and Etoile Isabel Marant, on the fifth floor

New York City Shopping Amarcord Vintage Fashion

Amarcord Vintage Fashion Arrow

Amarcord Vintage Fashion is one of the city's best vintage stores, with a selection that skews more toward high-end designers than it does thrifty treasures. The shop has a sleek, curated vibe, with racks organized vaguely by color and bags and jewelry on display in the back. This store is all about iconic stuff from big names: classic printed Pucci scarves, prim Gucci duffels from the Tom Ford era, and modish '60s Balenciaga accessories. After you've browsed the racks, make an appointment at the shop's nearby archive and showroom if you're a serious vintage hunter,.

Department Stores

Bloomingdale's 59th Street 1000 Third Ave., Midtown East, Manhattan This year marks Bloomingdale’s 150th anniversary, a testament to the department store’s lasting popularity and influence. Get inspired by a range of designer brands, including Balenciaga, Off-White, Givenchy, Helmut Lang and Marc Jacobs. Indulge in the samples at the beauty counters of Nars, Chanel, Tom Ford and Byredo (among others), and, most important, get your hands on the famous Little Brown Bag.    Macy’s Herald Square 151 W. 34th St., Herald Square, Manhattan Built in 1901, Macy’s flagship in Herald Square has 1.25 million square feet of retail space, making it the largest department store in the US. Shoppers flock to this iconic location to take in its history, window displays and, of course, the many brands it carries across apparel, accessories, beauty, homeware, furniture, toys and more. Wear your most comfortable shoes (or buy some there!), because you could spend all day shopping its 11 floors.

Nordstrom Flagship & Men's Store 225 W. 57th St. and 235 W. 57th St., Midtown West, Manhattan It’s hard to miss the glass facade of the Nordstrom flagship store housing seven floors of upscale shopping near Central Park, with the Nordstrom men’s store just across the street. Refresh your wardrobe with statement pieces by Saint Laurent, Paco Rabanne, Manolo Blahnik, LaQuan Smith, Luar, The Row and other expertly curated brands. Make a pit stop at the Shoe Bar on-site, which serves specialty cocktails and coffee drinks perfect for refueling.

Dover Street Market 160 Lexington Ave., Murray Hill, Manhattan Created by celebrated designer Rei Kawakubo of the Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons, the artfully designed eight-floor space that is Dover Street feels more like a fashionable fun house than a traditional retail shop. Come here for the contemporary selection of mid- and high-end brands that include Gucci, Jacquemus, Craig Green, Jil Sander, Stussy and Converse. Rose Bakery on the ground floor provides the perfect opportunity for people-watching.

Fifth Avenue Midtown East, Manhattan The mix of luxury brands and mass-market retailers lining Fifth Avenue cater to shoppers with a wide variety of interests and budgets. There’s sportswear (Adidas, Nike), high-street fashion (H&M, Zara), luxury (Van Cleef & Arpels, Bergdorf Goodman), books and toys (Barnes & Noble, The Lego Store), tech (Apple, Best Buy) and more. Notably, the main shopping on Fifth Avenue is located between Bryant Park and Central Park South—fewer than 20 blocks—so you could easily make a day of shopping and sightseeing.

Madison Avenue Business Improvement District 57th Street to 86th Street, Upper East Side, Manhattan A day (window) shopping on Madison Avenue is a quintessential Upper East Side experience. Stroll the avenue and take in the eye-catching windows at Elie Saab, Gabriela Hearst and Bottega Veneta. When you’re done shopping, grab a coffee at Ralph’s Coffee (attached to the Ralph Lauren store), then stick around for the art galleries, spas and fine dining interspersed throughout the avenue.

Saks Fifth Avenue 611 Fifth Ave., Midtown East, Manhattan This luxury department store has remained best in class since it first opened on Fifth Avenue in 1924. As Saks’ flagship, it doesn’t hold back on the bells and whistles. You’ll be captivated by its creative light display before even entering the store—the facade now a tourist attraction in its own right. Once inside, you’ll experience the height of upscale department store shopping with countless brands on-site, like Prada, Loewe, Sacai and Marni.

Tiffany & Co. 727 Fifth Ave., Midtown East, Manhattan Channel your inner Audrey Hepburn and treat yourself to the experience that is Tiffany & Co. At the iconic flagship at 727 Fifth Avenue, you’ll find a fine selection of timeless jewelry, as well as watches, leather embossing and monogramming, repairs and engraving services—ideal for the holiday season or any special occasion.

Brother Vellies, huaraches

Brother Vellies. Photo: Christopher Sherman

Brother Vellies 73 Franklin St., Greenpoint, Brooklyn Brooklyn-based Aurora James is the woman behind mission-driven label Brother Vellies. James’ line of luxury shoes and accessories are sustainably made by employing makers across the globe, in places such as South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco and New York City, who are paid living wages to create one-of-a-kind products. James also launched the 15 Percent Pledge , urging major retailers nationwide to allocate 15 percent of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses.

The Frankie Shop 59 Crosby St. (temporary location), Soho, Mahattan Another fashion insider’s favorite, the Frankie Shop is a small New York City boutique with global influence, and two locations in Paris. The store is known for its gender-fluid style that offers a modern take on classic wardrobe pieces. Choose from its namesake label or a selection of brands, including Nanushka and Coperni. While the boutique’s original location on the Lower East Side undergoes renovations, customers can shop at its temporary store in nearby Soho.

Kith 337 Lafayette St., Noho, Manhattan Queens native Ronnie Fieg is the man behind Kith, a store with a cultlike following where it’s not uncommon to find people waiting in line to enter. The boutique’s popular namesake label carries everything from outerwear to footwear, featuring collaborations with brands like Birkenstock, New Era and Calvin Klein. Kith also stocks some of the best streetwear brands in town, like 1017 Alyx 9SM, Ambush and Palm Angels. If you’re shopping for children, visit the nearby Kith Kids at 62 Bleecker St.

Noah 195 Mulberry St., Nolita, Manhattan Launched by Long Island native Brendon Babenzien, Noah is a brand with serious street credibility, preferred by fashion insiders. Chalk it up to Babenzien’s influence in the industry, having served as creative director for Supreme and currently as the men’s creative director for J.Crew. The Noah boutique carries classic menswear pieces that are utilitarian and sometimes nod to nautical themes. You’ll also find skateboard decks and surfboards here.

Vintage Shops

L Train Vintage Various locations, Brooklyn and Manhattan You’d be hard-pressed not to spot a local with an L Train Vintage shopping bag in New York City, especially if you’re riding—you guessed it—the L train. This vintage shop operates under different monikers at various locations, including No Relation Vintage and Urban Jungle, serving multiple neighborhoods in Brooklyn and the East Village in Manhattan. Arrive caffeinated, because you could spend hours rummaging through racks of leather jackets, cargo pants, Levi’s jeans, cowboy boots and other vintage essentials.

Other People’s Clothes 885 Woodward Ave., Ridgewood, Queens With outposts in Ridgewood, Queens, and Bushwick, Brooklyn, this small business has attracted customers near and far. At Other People’s Clothes, you can buy, sell and trade your gently used or new wardrobe items any day of the week. The shop stocks plenty of vintage threads, including designer pieces, as well as apothecary goods, beauty products and jewelry.

What Goes Around Comes Around   351 W. Broadway, Soho, Manhattan Founded in 1993, What Goes Around Comes Around has become a premier shopping destination for vintage luxury goods that span decades. You’ll find designer bags, accessories, jewelry and watches from the likes of Chanel, Rolex, Goyard, Dior, Fendi and more. Shopping here is a lesson in fashion history.

Only in New York

Fishs Eddy 889 Broadway, Flatiron District, Manhattan While on a trip in Upstate New York, founders Julie Gaines and David Lenovitz stumbled upon large quantities of old restaurant dishware in a town called Fishs Eddy. Inspired, they brought all of it back to the City and opened a store under that name in 1986; since then, Fishs Eddy has become somewhat of an institution in New York City. Here, you’ll find kitchenware of all sorts, tea towels, framed prints and tote bags. The shop’s popularity has even led to collaborations with famous New Yorkers Alan Cumming and Amy Sedaris.

MoMA Design Store 44 W. 53rd St., Midtown West, Manhattan If you’re looking for a souvenir that is both thoughtful and unique, stop by the Museum of Modern Art’s Design Store. Here, you’ll find gems like artist prints (Warhol or Haring, anyone?), rare posters, artfully designed tote bags, stickers and notebooks featuring vintage New York City maps and even a MoMA hoodie created in collaboration with Champion.

The Pushcart Presents 88 Essex St. Stall 16, Lower East Side, Manhattan At the Lower East Side’s Essex Market, you’ll find a variety of vendors ranging from grocers to restaurateurs to specialty retailers. Among them is The Pushcart Presents stall, created by couple Louise Sturcken and Javier Molea who sell quirky items made by New York City artists. Get your hands on a one-of-a-kind souvenir by choosing from a distinctive selection of candles, children’s wear, glassware, beauty and wellness products, and books.

Shopping Centers

Bronx Terminal Market 610 Exterior St., South Bronx This shopping center has been a mainstay in the Bronx community since 1935. What started as a wholesale produce market evolved into a nearly million-square-foot space for shopping and dining, conveniently located near Yankee Stadium. Chain store favorites, including Target, Best Buy, Home Depot and Marshalls (to name just a few), will keep you busy for hours. When you’re in need of a pick-me-up, choose from a variety of family-friendly restaurants, like Applebee’s and Chuck E. Cheese.

Brookfield Place 230 Vesey St., Battery Park City, Manhattan Fun fact: this shopping center has its own zip code—and, yes, it lives up to that grandiosity. Brookfield Place boasts some of the best upscale shopping in New York City, with brands like Bottega Veneta, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Mid-tier retailers, including Club Monaco, Oliver Peoples and Theory, complement the main menu. The shopping center hosts many events and art installations and includes a food hall and waterfront patio.

City Point 445 Albee Square W., Downtown Brooklyn More than a shopping center, City Point is a mixed-use complex that’s part commercial, part residential. It features New York City’s first Alamo Drafthouse location and houses a food market with some of the City’s most celebrated vendors, including Katz’s, Fulton Landing Seafood and Ample Hills Creamery. As for the shopping, indulge in the curated selection of retailers that range from bookstore McNally Jackson to boutique mattress company Casper to department stores like Target and Primark.

Empire Outlets 55 Richmond Terrace, St. George,   Staten Island This outlet mall scratches every bargain shopper’s itch by offering goods at a fraction of the cost. Here, you’ll find Banana Republic, Nike, Gap, Guess, Levi’s, Old Navy and the wildly popular Nordstrom Rack. When you’re ready for a change of pace, treat yourself to the mall’s waterfront dining and spectacular views of Lower Manhattan.

Kings Plaza Shopping Center 5100 Kings Plaza, Mill Basin, Brooklyn This indoor mall is also a haven for Brooklyn locals shopping their favorite big-name retailers. The mall was a subject of much fanfare a few years ago when British retailer Primark made Kings Plaza its first US location. Home decor enthusiasts can add Macy’s, Lowe’s and Bath & Body Works to their lists. Sneakerheads can take their pick from Adidas, Foot Locker and Vans. For fine jewelry, browse the selections at Zales, Pandora and Kay Jewelers.

The Mall at Bay Plaza 200 Baychester Ave., Baychester, the Bronx If you’re looking for a quintessential American mall experience, be sure to visit this Bronx gem. The three-level mall houses over 150 businesses that include Apple, Macy’s, H&M, DSW Shoes, Forever 21, GameStop, Sephora, Uniqlo and countless more. If you’re not the shopping type, eat your way through the mall’s restaurants—such as Chipotle, Dallas BBQ, Olive Garden and Shake Shack—or catch a movie at the AMC Theatres.

Queens Center 90-15 Queens Blvd., Elmhurst, Queens Yes, the Queens Center Mall might have the only Cheesecake Factory in NYC, but this shopping center also imbues local charm and features enough popular retailers that making the trip to Elmhurst is definitely worth it. QCM has been serving Queens locals for almost 50 years, and while the “hair straightener guy” no longer works there, grabbing a bubble tea while browsing stores like Macy’s, Gap, Adidas, Michael Kors, MAC, Timberland, Sephora and more is a shopping day well spent.

The Shops at Columbus Circle 10 Columbus Circle, Upper West Side, Manhattan This mall draws in many locals thanks to the Whole Foods Market and Equinox on-site, but visitors are equally attracted to its tasteful selection of retailers. Choose from Diptyque, J.Crew, Ladurée, Williams Sonoma and Stuart Weitzman, among others. Be sure to check out what is arguably the mall’s main attraction: a view of Columbus Circle and Central Park South.

The Shops at Hudson Yards 20 Hudson Yards, Hudson Yards, Manhattan This luxury mall first opened its doors in 2019 and has since become an anchor for Hudson Yards, one of Manhattan’s newest neighborhoods, recognizable to visitors by the 16-story honeycomb-esque structure, Vessel. It offers much of what Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue and Soho bring to the table, but it’s indoors and often less crowded, making it an ideal destination for those looking for a quieter shopping experience. Upscale retailers like Cartier, Dior and Fendi set the tone, with a few mid-priced brands like Aritzia, Zara and Madewell rounding out the selection.

The Shops at the Oculus 185 Greenwich St., Lower Manhattan The Oculus at the World Trade Center is a tourist attraction in itself, created by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. Its white columns come together at the structure’s spine—intended to be reminiscent of the fluttering wings of a bird taking flight—creating a bright and open space. Popular businesses include Aesop, Cos, Eataly, & Other Stories, Rituals and more. The mall is also a transportation hub, putting you right in the center of the NJ Path and multiple subway lines.    The Shops at Rockefeller Center 75 Rockefeller Plaza, Midtown West, Manhattan Known for its famous rink, the Top of the Rock observatory and Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center also features many popular global retailers. Visit staples such as Anthropologie and the Lego Store, pop into independent record shop Rough Trade NYC or pick up a souvenir for making it into a  Saturday Night Live  taping at the Shop at NBC Studios.

Staten Island Mall 2655 Richmond Ave., New Springville, Staten Island Staten Island’s only regional shopping center doesn’t disappoint. With over 200 stores on-site, tourists and locals alike could easily spend the day here. Children will love The Lego Store, Build-A-Bear Workshop, as well as Weekly Storytime at Barnes & Noble (Saturdays at 11am, through the end of the year). Looking for gift ideas? Swing by JCPenney, Primark, Swarovski and Ulta Beauty, among many others.

New York City’s Best 50 Souvenirs and Gifts (a Local’s Guide)

New York City’s Best 50 Souvenirs and Gifts (a Local’s Guide)

Sharing is caring!

“What souvenirs should I bring back from New York City?” It was a question that often stumped me. As a longtime New York City local, I never thought about what to bring home, because I was home . But when I started this blog, I started to pay closer attention to the bounty right here in my own backyard and to slowly compile my list of New York City’s Best Souvenirs.

new york tourist shop

What Gifts and New York City souvenirs made the Top List and Why You Should Trust my Suggestions

best and top 50 NYC souvenirs and gifts

When creating this master list of the best and top 50 New York City souvenirs, I wanted to include (i) iconic and unique NYC souvenirs that represent the city (ii) food souvenirs; (iii) souvenirs for kids and (iv) NYC themed gifts for friends and family back home. I also wanted the NYC souvenirs to be affordable, so no NYC gift listed here is over $50 and most are well under $10.

This is the most comprehensive list of unique NYC souvenirs you will find. I know because I googled to see what else is out there and only came across generic listicles using stock photos, defaulting to lazy recommendations like “something from the MOMA store.” Yeah, not helpful, thanks.

I have personally vetted each souvenir in my best of NYC list, taken nearly every photo, taste-tested, researched and visited each place. I’ve written and linked to the many NYC posts I’ve already written and added a couple dozen more to make this top 50 NYC souvenir guide.

These totes aren’t just for tourists, you’ll see the Strand tote bags slung over the shoulders of locals on the bus, stuffed with produce at the farmers markets and even at times used to lug actual books.

  • Food souvenir, perishable, so purchase at end of trip (can be frozen)
  • Good gift for carb lovers

I wrote all about my love for bagels, including how to order one and what a flagel is, in an earlier post here. New York City bagels top my list of best food souvenirs because they are truly unmatched. Pick up at your favorite bagel shop (or try my favorite, Ess-a-bagel).

6. New York City Ceramic Anthora Coffee Cup Souvenir

  • Suitable for everyone (sippy cups available for kids)
  • Available at the MOMA, City Store and here (ceramic Anthora coffee cup) online

Back in the day, you could spot a NYC takeout coffee cup (known as the “Anthora” design) by its iconic blue, white and gold colors. While it’s harder these days to find a traditional Greek Anthora cup (blame Starbucks), they remain a great nostalgic piece of NYC history and an iconic only-in-NYC souvenir.

7. FDNY (Fire Department of New York) Souvenirs

FDNY toy firetruck nyc souvenir children kids

  • Buy souvenirs from the Fire Museum or an authorized gift shop like City Store to ensure it benefits the FDNY (souvenirs are NOT sold at firehouses)

When you were a child, did you have dreams of being a fireman? Or a firetruck? Live out those dreams and honor the brave men and women of the FDNY by visiting the fire museum for a great learning experience and pick up some fun fireman related souvenirs like a truck, cap and kid size fire jacket.

Note: Although it’s fine to take unobtrusive photos of local firehouses from the outside, under no circumstances should you ask for a tour, these are working fire houses, not tourist attractions.

8. New York City Souvenir Black and White Cookie

black and white cookie nyc

  • Iconic New York City Souvenir
  • Food Souvenir
  • Comes wrapped for easy transport and better shelf life

These delicious cookie-cakes can make a great New York City souvenir, but only if you get them at the right place (William Greenberg is my favorite). I wrote all about the black and white cookie in an earlier post here .

9. Quirky Gowanus Canal T Shirt Souvenirs

new york tourist shop

  • Fun Brooklyn gift for adults/teens
  • Available at local gift shops in Gowanus Brooklyn and here online

The Gowanus Canal, a tidal estuary in Brooklyn that flows into the New York Harbor, was built during the Civil War for transportation purposes. It’s now a Superfund site and c onsidered one of the most polluted waterways in the country.

Despite the cleanup still ongoing, scores of artists and eclectic shops have set up in the area and apartment prices are sky high. The hardy tourist can explore this canal via a guided canoe tour, or just take a stroll through the neighborhood and buy a tongue-in-cheek souvenir like these Gowanus canal T-shirts .

10. Roosevelt Island Souvenir Replica Tram Car

new york tourist shop

  • Unusual NYC Souvenir idea

The Roosevelt Island tram is positively thrilling– it feels as close to an adventure as you can get in Manhattan, soaring 3100 feet in the air over the East River (yes we do have actual islands that are part of Manhattan!) Check out my post for how and where to catch the tram, what to do on Roosevelt Island and a full review of the gift shop .

The gift shop right off the tram exit has a very unique NYC souvenir– a replica bright red tram car.

11. Roosevelt Island Asylum for the Insane Mug Souvenir

new york tourist shop

  • Unique and unusual NYC gift
  • Available at Roosevelt Island gift shop

I couldn’t help but add a second Roosevelt Island souvenir because of a bit of sometimes forgotten NYC history.

The New York City Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1841 (when Roosevelt Island was called Blackwell Island), was the subject of an exposé by Nellie Bly in her 1887 book  Ten Days in a Mad-House . You can still see the original octagon shaped entrance on the island, now serving as the entry to luxury apartments.

16. El Barrio East Harlem Souvenir Hoodie

new york tourist shop

  • Local East Harlem Souvenir
  • Hoodie available at the gift shop at El Museo del Barrio

East Harlem, also widely known as El Barrio (“the neighborhood”) is a mix of thriving cultures, a nice change from the more staid Upper East Side that it borders.

For a first timer, I recommend visiting the amazing Conservatory Gardens of Central Park at 105th Street, hitting the latest exhibit at El Museo del Barrio across the street (and grabbing this cool souvenir hoodie) then trying one of the great restaurants (my favorites are Taco Mix and Sidewalk Tacos, Earl’s Cheese, Bar Goyana, Cascalote Latin Bistro and Lloyd’s Carrot Cake).

17. Metropolitan Museum of Art Replica Etruscan Bracelet Souvenir

new york tourist shop

  • Unique NYC gift
  • Available at the Met gift shop

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the “Met”) is a must see for tourists. As a local, I visit often sometimes just to see one thing or breathe in the atmosphere. Read all about my top picks on what to see at the Met and a rundown of the best souvenirs here.

I’ve browsed through the jewelry exhibits and lusted after gorgeous designs of the the ancient artifacts. While the Met’s jewelry collection isn’t available for loans, you can find a beautifully made replica souvenir at the Met’s gift shop.

18. William, the Met’s 4000 Year Old Blue Mascot

new york tourist shop

I don’t often buy “tchockes,” but made an exception for adorable William. William has been the Met Museum’s unofficial mascot since 1917 (though he is actually over four thousand years old). Now he is my mascot too, and takes pride of place in my bookcase ( see my post on the Met here ).

19. Chinatown Souvenirs

It’s a local institution, and truly qualifies as a hidden gem, known little outside of the city. While the shop is a bit out of the way for a tourist on limited time, it is located directly off the train stop.

new york tourist shop

  • Locally owned Harlem based company
  • Available at Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Macy’s and here online
  • My current favorite scent is the Speakeasy candl e.

I’ve been friends with Harlem Candle founder Teri Johnson for nearly ten years now, as we are both in the same travel writing community. Teri served as my mentor in those early days, and has shared her own amazing collection of souvenirs (that’s me in the photo below taking pictures in her Harlem apartment).

I remember the early days when Teri was pouring candles and creating intoxicating scents from her Harlem apartment. Since then, her candles have taken off and grown into a multi-million dollar business, trading local markets for luxury retailers.

Teri not only creates candles that look gorgeous and smell divine, but she also generously supports other aspiring women, whether in the travel or business world.

  • Grab a loaf of Orwashers rye, some pastrami and make sandwiches at home for a fraction of the price of one sandwich

To sample delicious New York City pastrami, hit any of the classic Jewish delicatessen s and place your order to go by the pound. Famous spots like Katz’s deli often have mad crowds, whether it’s worth the wait is up to debate. I prefer to seek out a neighborhood deli (like Pastrami Queen in my photo above, a favorite of the late Anthony Bourdain) that never has a long wait.

33. Magnolia Banana Bread Pudding

new york tourist shop

Magnolia Bakery may be better known for their cupcakes, but I know plenty of people who are obsessed with Magnolia’s Bread pudding, including a friend who has been known to pack several containers in her suitcase to take back to Germany. • Available at most bagel shops

A near cousin to the bagel, bialys are similar in circumferance but easily distinguished by the flatter shape and a depression (typically filed with onions or other toppings) instead of a hole. • Available at Eloise Shop at the Plaza Hotel

“I am a city child. I live at the Plaza.”  So says the pint-size heroine of one of the greatest children’s books ever written,  Eloise at the Plaza .

41. NYC Pizza Dough DIY Souvenir

  • NYC DIY food souvenir
  • Keep the dough packed in a cooler back to stay fresh

I can’t recommend bringing NYC pizza home as a souvenir– unless you live in the tri-state area and are eating it on the way home.

But a little known secret among New Yorkers: many pizza shops will sell you the dough right from their shop. Some will even sell the sauce and cheese. My friend Dani noted that a couple from Germany on her Pizza Walking tour picked up dough from Best Pizza in Brooklyn to bring home to Europe.

42. NBC Pillow Souvenir

To replicate the perfect egg cream soda like they make at old fashioned soda counters, pick up some Fox’s U-Bet syrup.

Table of Contents

The 7 Best Shopping Areas in NYC

Every neighborhood in New York features its own best areas for shopping. You can shop for big-name brands anywhere in the city.  Shopping on Fifth Avenue and the Meatpacking District, or unique boutiques in city parts like SoHo , Williamsburg, and Greenwich Village will provide you different types of stores. One of the best parts of shopping in the fashion capital New York City is that many brands have a flagship store here.

1. Shopping at Columbus Circle

Columbus Circle and Time Warner Center

You can find Columbus Circle directly in the bottom west corner of Central Park near 8th Avenue.

Address: 10 Columbus Circle, New York, 10023

2. Best Shopping in SoHo NYC

Cobblestone roads in SoHo

With some great unique cafés in the area, you will not struggle to find a spot to rest your feet after a day of shopping. Our tip: come early in the morning during the week. There is much less of a crowd which guarantees a far more relaxed shopping experience. More about SoHo here.

3. Shopping in the Meatpacking District

Shopping in the Meatpacking District NYC

In addition to the expensive boutiques, you can also find a UGG Store, an Asics store with a broad selection of their newest products, and an Apple store. If you are tired of shopping, you can stroll through the Chelsea Market to find a bite to eat – the Food Market sells something to please every kind of palate. You can also combine your shopping trip in the Meatpacking District with a visit to the Whitney Museum!

4. Shopping at Herald Square

may's store from outside

The atmosphere at Herald Square is significantly more hectic than the aforementioned spots. As a hotspot for tourists, it requires some strong nerves or a serious dedication to shopping. However, if you don’t mind a slightly busier shopping experience and a higher noise level, you will find that a great shopping experience awaits. In addition to the huge department store, Macy’s NYC (which is impressive just by itself), there are many other flagship stores all around Herald Square.

The new flagship store of H&M has also opened here, which is, of course, a brand you can find internationally as well as in the UK, but the NYC shop does it better. In close proximity, you will also find Victoria’s Secret, Zara, Mango, Levis, Footlocker, Gap, and Forever 21. These are just a few of the more popular retail shops you will find here. Our tip for this shopping location is the same as the previous one, make sure to come early and during the week if possible. Once you arrive at Herald Square you will quickly find yourself adapting to the fast pace of New York as you explore the large, busy, shops.

5. Shopping at The Oculus

Shopping at Oculus in NYC

Very close to One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is the Oculus. You can’t miss the futuristic looking building. It is also a train station with connections to New Jersey, a Christmas market during the holiday season and a mall with many great stores.

For those who are looking for one of the newest shopping addresses in New York, the Oculus is the best choice!

Here you find everything you need to know about shopping at the Oculus .

6. Shopping around Brookfield Place

We love Brookfield Place: in the summer you can sit in one of the many restaurants and look at the One Word Trade Center, there are some of the best rooftop bars in New York and you can go shopping.

In Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan hides a complex of buildings in which there is a lot of choice, especially for the more expensive tastes. Here you will find luxury stores like Burberry, DVF, Gucci, Hermes, Salvatore Ferragamo and Tory Burch.

Want to know more about it? Check out our Guide to Brookfield Place NYC .

7. Shopping on Lexington Avenue

On the Upper East Side around Lexington Avenue, you will find a nice mix of luxury brands and more common brands like Zara and H&M. The Upper East Side is also home to Bloomingdale’s, one of the most famous and beloved department stores of New York City. When you purchase an item here it will be placed in one of their signature, world-renowned, Little Brown Bags for you.

The Most Famous Shopping Stores in NYC

Macs_161214115634010

01 Macy's Herald Square

This is the flagship of Macy’s department stores and it shows! At over 2100ft² this is the biggest department store in the USA! The 10 floors of shopping space have developted into a NYC icon for shopping over the past 150 years and as soon as you set foot through its doors, you will see why.

02 Bloomingdale's

Bloomingdale’s is an institution in New York. The brown shopping bags that you are sure to feel like you’ve come across a hundred times in New York are very well known. There is a reason for this: the selection is huge and really valuable.

Saks_Fifth_Avenue_Holiday_Windows_NYC_211212210117004

03 Saks Fifth Avenue

Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store, which is located in Midtown Manhattan, offers an experience like no other flagship store in the city. It’s one of the original stores responsible for helping to make fifth ave a must-visit shopping destination.

The flagship store is a whopping ten stories high and features everything from designer clothing to accessories to home decor. You’ll find all of the top designers at Saks Fifth Avenue, including Prada, Gucci, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and more! In addition to clothing, you can also find beauty products and services here, making it the perfect one-stop-shop for all your luxury needs.

The flagship store is often considered to be the most luxurious department store in New York City and offers an experience that is sure to please everyone who visits. With outdoor light experiences, and intricate displays adorning each floor of Saks, it’s no wonder why many consider it to be one of the must-visit store’s flagship stores in NYC.

240112105129001

Futuristic, modern and unique. I think that’s the point when you talk about H&M in Times Square. Since its opening in autumn 2013 with Lady Gaga, the H&M trends have been set here. This is where they test what works on the market, this is where the choice is greatest. A DJ creates a great atmosphere every day and the staff also celebrates their work.

Nordstrom_191024133504030

05 Nordstrom Flagship Store NYC

The Nordstrom Flagship store in NYC opened in 2019 and is the first Nordstrom for women in the city. It was a big move because the area is already saturated with multiple department stores but it also shows how successful Nordstrom is becoming. Nordstrom Men’s store is located right across the street.

Jewellery

06 Tiffany & Co.

World famous and even movies were named after the brand. Tiffany & Co. is available several times in New York, but the flagship store is without doubt without the one on 5th Avenue. From low prices to unaffordable you will find everything that glitters and sparkles. To the gentlemen among you: with your wives you should make a detour 🙂

Shopping

07 Victoria's Secret

Victoria’s Secret is also one of the brands that are firmly established in New York City. Here you can get magic lingerie, but also swimwear and shoes. You can shop in over 40 official stores throughout New York City. When it comes to shopping, Victoria’s Secret is undoubtedly one of them.

Which are the best shopping streets in NYC?

Best shopping streets in NYC

New York City is also home to Fifth Avenue, one of the most famous streets for shopping in the world. Designers like Calvin Klein, Prada, Armani, Hugo Boss, and Dolce & Gabbana have flagship stores here and are just waiting for you to cash in on their latest deals. Less expensive but equally big retail chains that you will be familiar with from the UK, are also popular in New York – this includes Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Footlocker, Nike on FifthAvenue, Adidas, Apple, and H&M, for example. One thing is for sure, you won’t be going home empty-handed and there are so many great places to shop in NYC.

As mentioned before, 5th Avenue is one of the most famous and also most expensive shopping streets in NYC. Every shopping street in New York City is as diverse as the city itself. From hip and casual in Williamsburg to super fancy at Hudson Yards . Besides 5th Avenue we recommend checking out:

  • Madison Avenue
  • Lexington Avenue

  • Bleeker Street
  • Mulberry Street

New York City is home to many great shopping experiences and malls. Many of these malls are huge and feature numerous designer stores across their expansive grounds.

When it comes to outlets in New York , there’s currently only one in NYC, but more are located just outside of the city. You will definitely find some great deals here and not only on last season’s items. Make sure to check these out as you will often find large discounts on designer items too!

1. The Woodbury Common Premium Outlet

Woodbury Outlet

A roundtrip outing to the mall is not a hardship with regular bus connections (ShortLine/coach USA) from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd Street at 8th Avenue). If you are the owner of a New York Sightseeing Pass you can also reserve a bus to the outlets and take advantage of the included  discount booklet valued at several hundred dollars .

Here you can find our complete review of the   Woodbury Common Premium Outlet .

2. Jersey Gardens Outlet

Jersey Gardens

Once you are in the Port Authority Bus Terminal, go to the Lines 111 and 115 of NJ Transit. You need to buy roundtrip tickets (to and from) in advance and indicate the bus number you want (111 or 115). Buses drive on a regular schedule, (approx. 1 per hour).

After many years of waiting and constant delays, the massive shopping and entertainment complex is finally open. Check out my article about the American Dream Mall for more information.

5. Garden State Plaza Mall

Garden State Plaza

Due to its size, the selection at the Garden State Plaza Mall is huge. Outlets often feature many unknown brands trying to pedal their leftover products from the previous season – but not here. Our jaws dropped when we looked at the map to see which stores could be found in the mall.

6. Westfield Shopping Mall inside the Oculus

Secondhand Shopping in New York and the best thrift stores in NYC

In addition to the countless designer stores, New York City also has many secondhand and thrift stores to offer. Shopping in a thrift store is not only good for the environment, but also for your wallet. Take a look at my article with the best thrift stores in NYC ! Here are three examples of places where you can find really good second-hand goods:

Buffalo Exchange

This second-hand store in New York is probably the most well-known. New Yorkers bring whatever no longer fits, what they no longer like, or simply is no longer worn to this store. Shoes, jeans, dresses, skirts, shirts, bags, simply everything you can imagine can be found at the Buffalo Exchange. Depending on location, inventory is more mainstream or funkier. For example, in the hip district Williamsburg, items are a lot more trendy than they are in the upper-crust East Village . But you can find deals everywhere.

This store is absolutely huge – hence the name Niketown. Spread over multiple floors you will all the different Nike ranges sorted by their respective sports. You can buy shoes, clothes, and accessories for everything from basketball to skateboarding. Not only is the selection larger here than anything you will be used to from Europe, but the prices will also definitely make you want to buy something!

Location: 57th St between 5th and 6th Avenue

Foot Locker New York Herald Square

If you are looking for the best pair of trainers, sports shoes or a new training outfit, this store has the best and biggest selection next to Niketown. Organized according to sports with different departments for men, women, and children, this store carries it all. Prices are fair and their product selection is always up to date.

If Nike comes out with new gear or the latest trend from Adidas, you can be sure to find them here. We particularly recommend the Foot Locker location next to Macy’s as it lets you combine your shopping trip with other sights, and it is by far the biggest Foot Locker in the city.

Location: Midtown West Herald Square / 34th Street from Macy’s

Adidas Originals Store

This is one of our favorite stores because we are huge Adidas fans. We all have a pair of Adidas shoes and most of our running gear is from here too. This huge store is located in the heart of SoHo and it offers a broad and up to date selection of merchandise. The original series has brought back many classic designs and is gaining popularity by the day.

There are several stores such as the 5th Avenue store, the flagship store in SoHo and another one on Wooster Street near Broadway.

The 5th Avenue Apple Store NYC

Where to go shopping in new york.

New York City offers countless opportunities for shopping. There are smaller boutiques & nice little thrift stores, but also big department stores like Macy’s on 34th Street or huge malls like the Empire Outlet on Staten Island. The most famous shopping street, however, is 5th Avenue, where you can find many famous brand stores.

What is the famous shopping street in NYC?

The most famous shopping street in New York City is the 5th Avenue where you can find many flagship stores of big famous brands. These include Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Urban Outfitters and Saks Fifth Avenue. The famous Empire State Building is also located here. The 5th Avenue is probably one of the most famous streets worldwide.

Sales Tax and Customs Regulations

All prices indicated on goods in New York do not include the sales taxes. You need to add an 8.875% sales tax to the total of all purchases. This number is comprised of the sales tax of the city of New York (4.5%) and the sales tax of the state of New York (4.375%). Several outlet malls, for example, the Jersey Gardens Outlets, are located outside of the city for this very reason, here there are reduced tax rates on most goods and no sales tax on clothing items!

Please be mindful of the customs regulations when you return to your country, as you are only allowed to bring in a certain amount of goods tax-free.

Opening Hours in general

Opening times are very flexible in Manhattan – some shops are even open 24 hours a day. Most, however, are open from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday through Saturday and 11:00 am to 7:00 pm on Sundays. This means you will have plenty of time to go shopping without having to watch the time.

Breaking news, ‘crackhead barney’ says she was ‘maimed’ by alec baldwin in coffee shop incident as she wears diaper, bares chest in unhinged piers morgan interview.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Performance artist and anti-Israel activist “Crackhead Barney” refused to say why she harassed Alec Baldwin at a New York City coffee shop this week in an utterly bizarre interview with Piers Morgan on Wednesday — and insisted she was “maimed” by the actor.

The left-wing agitator’s appearance on Morgan’s “Uncensored” was surreal from the get-go.

“I’ve been waiting for you, Piers f–king Morgan!” the popular ambush interviewer, who boasts nearly 100,000 followers on Instagram, screamed after she was introduced on the program.

Crackhead Barney’s face was painted white with bright red lipstick. She wore a messy blond wig, a neck brace and a thick pair of sunglasses. Her top was pulled up to her neck, revealing her nearly bare chest.

The  anonymous personality from Jamaica, Queens , held a single crutch and her right arm appeared to be in some sort of cast or sling — and she wore a diaper, which she told Morgan she’d put on especially for him.

Crackhead Barney and Piers Morgan

Morgan asked her about her confrontation with Baldwin at the coffee shop Monday, in which the performance artist filmed herself demanding the actor say “Free Palestine” until he slapped her phone out of her hands.

She immediately screamed that Baldwin attacked her and that she was the victim.

“What did I do to Alec Baldwin? Piers, do you see the damage that Alec did to me?” she asked, pointing to her crutches.

“Do you see the damage? Look at my arms! Look at my arms, Piers! Look at my neck! I was maimed by a white man on Monday!”

Alec Baldwin

Morgan assured her she wasn’t “maimed.” She called the host “another white devil” during a tirade that was so animated, it sent her wig flying.

“You don’t have to shout at me, we can have a civil conversation,” Morgan told her.

“Piers f–king Morgan … What’s wrong with saying ‘Free Palestine’?” she asked. “Piers, can you say ‘Free, free Palestine’ for me?”

Morgan tried to respond but struggled to be heard over Crackhead Barney’s yelling. When he was able to get a word in, the host said, “I absolutely believe that Palestine should be free.”

His guest then demanded he tell her how to make that happen.

Morgan, who is also a Post columnist , tried to bring the conversation back to the Baldwin incident and asked Crackhead Barney again why she confronted him.

“This is the third white man to beat me this week,” she said, insisting she was attacked.

“Yesterday my white boyfriend beat the s–t out of me.”

NYU pro palestinian protester heckling and videoing two men holding a jewish flag outside of the Stern School of Business on Monday, April 22nd.

Morgan suggested that Crackhead Barney was making a joke out of a serious war that has left more than 34,000 people dead.

“Why are you making it a mockery?” Morgan asked as she shoved food in her mouth.

“I’m always serious,” she shot back, pretending to cry.

“I’m a victim. I’m a victim, Piers,” she said as the food dribbled over her face and chest.

Morgan tried one final time to get the incredibly chaotic agitator to say why she confronted Baldwin. Then she appeared to get upset.

“Look, Piers, you’re trying to spin this into some bulls–t. I know exactly what you’re doing, Piers, and your tactics,” she said.

Crackhead Barney tries to interview Cardinal Dolan in 2021.

“You’re British, you’re f–king annoying, you eat tea and crumpets, you have your pinky in the f–king air, you support the Queen. F–k the crown, f–k Buckingham Palace,” she ranted.

“Now I’m getting angry. ‘Cause, Piers, that’s what you do, you set people up for s–t.”

“I know exactly what you’re doing, Piers. Because I do it, too, Piers. And I have a f–king audience. You think you could set me up, Piers?” her unhinged rant continued.

Morgan called her appearance ”one of the most pathetic things I’ve had to endure” before he cut her off.

Crackhead Barney approached Baldwin inside Maman on University Place in Greenwich Village on Monday. She repeatedly pestered the 66-year-old to say “Free Palestine” and promised to leave him alone if he did.

The podcast host, who is known for ambush interviews, also brought up Baldwin’s criminal case in New Mexico, where he’s facing manslaughter charges in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust.”

The Emmy winner grabbed the activist’s phone as she tried to snatch it back. He pushed her out the door and deadbolted it to keep her out, footage she posted showed.

She then stalked around outside talking to herself about how Baldwin had “assaulted me, I should press charges,” while calling random passersby racists and “Zionist bitches.”

After the incident, she said in a statement: “My performance art and confrontational media is a statement about the double standards of society in the US.

“As the US supports Israel in the genocide of Palestinians, here at home, powerful people maintain a facade of politeness and dignity while we export death and terror around the world,” she continued, adding that the entertainment industry “has been largely silent” over “Israel’s genocide.”

Her recent videos largely consist of her swearing at cops and telling pro-Israel demonstrators such things as “You know they’re not coming home, right?,” referring to hostages kidnapped by Hamas.

Earth Day: How one grocery shopper takes steps to avoid ‘pointless plastic’

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Nature wraps bananas and oranges in peels. But in some modern supermarkets, they’re bagged or wrapped in plastic too.

For Judith Enck, that’s the epitome of pointless plastic. The baby food aisle is similarly distressing for her, with its rows and rows of blended fruits, vegetables and meat in single-use pouches that have replaced glass jars.

Less than 10% of plastic is recycled. Most is buried, burned or dumped. Recycling rates for glass, aluminum and cardboard are far higher. And cardboard or paper packaging is biodegradable.

The global theme for Earth Day on Monday is planet vs. plastic. Plastic production continues to ramp up globally and is projected to triple by 2050 if nothing changes. Most of it is made from fossil fuels and chemicals. As the world transitions away from using fossil fuels for electricity and transportation, plastics offer a lifeboat for oil and gas companies as a market that can grow.

FILE - Climate activists hold a rally to protest the use of fossil fuels on Earth Day at Freedom Plaza, April 22, 2023, in Washington. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, File)

The Earth Day environmental movement is calling for “the end of plastics for the sake of human and planetary health.” People are increasingly breathing, eating and drinking tiny particles of plastic , though researchers say more work is necessary to determine its effect on human health. Millions of tons of plastic wind up in the ocean each year.

This week, thousands of negotiators and observers representing most of the world’s nations are gathering in Ottawa to craft a treaty to try to end the rapidly escalating levels of plastic pollution .

Plastic is everywhere in modern society. That’s evident whenever you go grocery shopping, said Enck, a former Environmental Protection Agency regional administrator who now heads up the advocacy group Beyond Plastics. There are things shoppers can do if they want to use less plastic.

On a recent trip to the Honest Weight Food Co-op in Albany, Enck bought almond butter and yogurt in glass containers. She asked that her fish be wrapped in paper and not placed in a plastic bag. She steered clear of bagged carrots and breezed past the lettuce packed in what she calls “plastic coffins.”

She keeps reusable shopping bags in her car, a common practice in New York since the state banned plastic carryout bags several years ago .

“Even small steps make a difference because big supermarkets notice when people ask for less packaged material. Also, our kids pay attention. If they’re shopping with us and you talk about why you’re reaching for the glass jar rather than the plastic jar, it’s an opportunity for education,” she said.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

AP: How do you avoid plastic packaging and products at the grocery store?

(AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

I tell everyone you’re not going to be perfect, but do the best you can and focus on things you buy most often. I just could not keep buying those plastic orange juice jugs. So what I did on the juice was, I bought a really nice glass pitcher with a lid on it. And for juices and lemonade, I only buy the frozen concentrate. You avoid the plastic altogether. It takes a little bit of time to melt it and add three cans of water. But most people can manage that.

AP: Many shoppers start in the produce aisle. What are some tips?

I bring reusable cloth produce bags because I don’t want to use those thin plastic bags. So if I need a couple of apples, a couple of avocados, I’ll put them right into my reusable produce bag. I try to buy loose carrots rather than carved carrots in little plastic bags. I will never, ever buy bananas if they’re in a plastic bag, which in my store they usually are not, but I have seen that sometimes. It’s pretty easy to buy loose peppers. I never put broccoli into a plastic bag. You know, you don’t need a lot of those produce bags.

The real dilemma is the fresh berries. Now they do come in number two plastic, which is supposed to be recyclable. I know that Driscoll’s is starting to sell strawberries in a little cardboard box, which I am waiting for.

AP: What do you do when plastic is unavoidable?

For crackers, you can recycle the outside box if it’s cardboard, but then there’s usually a plastic bag inside or a waxy bag that you can’t recycle. But you can use that waxy bag or those little plastic bags if you have pets. I don’t have a pet, but my friends use bread bags and chip bags when they pick up pet poop. So why buy pet poop bags, you can just save those.

I do use regular trash bags. I don’t knock myself out on that. I try not to fill it up. If you can reduce your waste generation, you’re not buying as many bags. I think it’s very important to compost at home if you have the space.

AP: Where have you seen improvement?

The household goods aisle. I am excited about the changes. For detergent you can get concentrates. I only use powder in the dishwasher. I strongly recommend that people avoid the plastic pods. And you can recycle the cardboard boxes from the powdered soaps. You don’t have to get it in plastic. I also think the beverage aisle has some real opportunities for recycling. Better than most other aisles.

AP: What could be done so shoppers have more options?

The nice thing about paper, cardboard, glass and metal is it can be easily made from recycled content. And it actually is recyclable. You can put it in your recycling bin. And if it gets littered, the paper in the cardboard, in particular, doesn’t stick around for centuries.

If we were to pass a strong packaging law to reduce plastic packaging at the state or national level, you would have packaging engineers thinking about what happens after the packaging is used. New York is considering a law right now that would reduce plastic packaging. Unless we adopt new laws, it’s not going to change because the voluntary pledges by companies are falling short across the board. That’s the only way to solve this.

The Bazaar Guide to New Orleans

Just in time for Jazz Fest

Even if you can’t make it to Jazz Fest, the city’s busy cultural calendar means there’s really never a bad time to plan a trip to the Crescent City. Ahead, Harper’s Bazaar shares our favorite spots to eat, drink, dance, and shop in New Orleans. Laissez les bon temps rouler —let the good times roll!

.css-1pfpin{font-family:NewParisTextBook,NewParisTextBook-roboto,NewParisTextBook-local,Georgia,Times,Serif;font-size:1.75rem;line-height:1.2;margin:0rem;padding-left:5rem;padding-right:5rem;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-1pfpin{padding-left:2.5rem;padding-right:2.5rem;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-1pfpin{font-size:2.5rem;line-height:1.2;}}.css-1pfpin b,.css-1pfpin strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-1pfpin em,.css-1pfpin i{font-style:normal;font-family:NewParisTextItalic,NewParisTextItalic-roboto,NewParisTextItalic-local,Georgia,Times,Serif;} WHERE TO STAY

One of the greatest things about New Orleans is that there’s no shortage of gorgeous hotels to host you. A personal favorite of mine is Hotel Saint Vincent —a former orphanage turned mod-inspired abode (and also where I happened to get married)—tucked away in the quiet Lower Garden District and home to one of the best pools in the city. Those who want to be closer the action (i.e., the reckless abandon of Bourbon Street) can opt for lodging closer to the French Quarter, where Expedia-approved properties such as the Eliza Jane , the Kimpton , and the newly renovated Four Seasons New Orleans provide not only top-tier hospitality, but also the ultimate convenience: being able to step out the door and join any party that’s passing by. New Orleans has a subtle duality that one notices once they get to know the city better—and part of its beauty is being able to switch between the lavish celebrations and the more laid-back, slow-to-start Southern mornings.

WHERE TO DRINK

There’s no such thing as a bad drink in New Orleans. Whether you’re looking for an artisanal cocktail or a glass of funky natural wine, anywhere you stumble into will likely have the libation you’re looking for. For those who want to spend the day with a bottle and the best damn charcuterie plate you’ll ever have, head to Bachannal in the city’s hipster haunt of Bywater. If it’s time for happy hour, Luke’s downtown has a perfect French 75 (with cognac! the NOLA way!) paired with a dozen fresh oysters, and there’s Peychaud’s or Columns Bar for dirty martinis done right. Paradise Lounge at Hotel Saint Vincent also makes a mean Italian margarita and rosemary spritz, and the roof of the Ace Hotel is the perfect spot for a nightcap (and makes a top-shelf espresso martini).

WHERE TO EAT

Don’t tell New York, but to me, New Orleans is America’s best food city. While on a macro level the town is known for the obvious contenders (beignets! gumbo! po’boys!), it also has so many hidden gems from local chefs aiming to reinvent how the world sees Creole cuisine. Be sure to visit Acme’s Oyster House for traditional New Orleans eats, (get a dozen chargrilled, add hot sauce, and ask for extra bread), Elizabeth’s in Bywater for a perfect Southern breakfast (praline bacon: Don’t ask, just do!), and Cafe Sbisa for chicken and (sweet potato!) waffles and sinfully good shrimp and grits. For chef-driven sandwiches bigger than your head, head to Turkey & the Wolf ; or for a gorgeous weekend brunch in a dreamy garden, opt for Cafe Amelie . Satsuma is great for vegetarians or anyone hoping for bit of lighter fare, and Dakar has been highlighted nationwide for its take on Senegalese cuisine. Cafe du Monde and its pillowy-soft beignets are, of course, nonnegotiable.

WHERE TO DANCE

Technically, the party can be wherever you want it to be in New Orleans, but for the sake of brevity, the best place to find live music in the city would be anywhere on Frenchman Street. Nightlife staples include DBA New Orleans , the Spotted Cat Music Club , the Rabbit Hole , and Treme Hideaway , among many others .

WHERE TO SHOP

New Orleans is a city for music lovers and eccentric dressers. Any vinyl fan will have a field day sorting through vintage LPs at NOLA Mix Records in the Lower Garden District, while independent boutiques like Lekha , Elysian by Emily Morrison , and Saint Claude Social Club provide provide eclectic pieces for your home and wardrobe. Nestled inside of Hotel Saint Vincent, ByGeorge is perfect for any luxury lover: The mini boutique sells resortwear and accessories from brands like Loewe, Dries Van Noten, Christopher John Rogers, and Rabanne.
