Travel Advertising News
Taika waititi definitely (maybe) stars in new zealand travel ad, the oscar-winning actor-writer-director-producer hypes his native country in meta short film.
Inspiration meets innovation at Brandweek , the ultimate marketing experience. Join industry luminaries, rising talent and strategic experts in Phoenix, Arizona this September 23–26 to assess challenges, develop solutions and create new pathways for growth. Register early to save .
Filmmaker and actor Taika Waititi’s schedule is overflowing these days, with highlights that include walking in his first New York Fashion Week show for Hermès, popping into the MTV Video Music Awards and stumping for his soccer-themed flick Next Goal Wins on the film festival circuit.
The long-gestating Star Wars film he’s supposed to write? That might still be happening. In the meantime, he’s become the chief creative officer for a namesake line of adaptogen-based beverages.
In short, Waititi is a very busy man. So if an ad shoot slips his mind, he can be forgiven. Or can he?
Waititi, clearly burning the candle at both ends, begs off his spokesman duties and sends his stunt double as a replacement to star in a travel campaign for his native New Zealand. The director, Jackie van Beek, is none too pleased.
Viewers, on the other hand, are in for a meta-infused treat—the setup has spawned a delightful long-form commercial for Tourism New Zealand , with a timely Blackbeard cameo and self-referential lines like these:
“I just can’t help right now,” Waititi says during an urgent phone call from van Beek. “I’m shooting season two of the hit show ‘Our Flag Means Death,’ and I just can’t let the fans down.”
Post-pandemic push
“No Place Like It On Earth,” “definitely starring Taika Waititi” per the cheeky credits, drops as the country tries to rebound from Covid-era declines in its international tourism.
Prior to 2020’s lockdown and New Zealand’s border closings, international tourism accounted for about 5.5% of gross domestic product, per BBC News. Overseas guests topped 528,000 in 2019, a number that fell to 178,426 in June 2023, according to Statista.
“Competition for visitors is fierce, and New Zealand needs to work hard to encourage visitation and stand out,” said René de Monchy, chief executive of the tourism board.
“No Place Like It On Earth,” from agency Augusto, shows off a range of the country’s locations and experiences, including whitewater rafting in Rotorua, a scenic flight over Mount Tarawera, dolphin watching in Kaikōra and wine tasting in Auckland.
‘New Zealand needs you ‘
The 3 1/2-minute film also features Waititi’s enthusiastic narration and pre-planned flubs in the production, like unusable shots of stand-in Jade Daniels’ face. “This was a horrible idea,” van Beek says in the video. She eventually lures Waititi into the commercial with the plea: “I need you—New Zealand needs you.”
When he does appear in the ad, Waititi gives van Beek unsolicited tips on how to direct.
“There’s nothing I enjoy more than pretending to be myself bickering with Taika over what makes a good director,” van Beek said in a statement.
Emotional Airline Ad Follows an Iguana’s Skyward Journey
In the cleverly contrived scenario and elsewhere, Waititi continues as a tireless supporter of the home country where he filmed Our Flag Means Death and other projects.
“I always tell people you can go surfing in the morning and then drive a couple of hours and be skiing in the evening,” Waititi said in a statement. “I don’t think there’s anywhere else on earth where you can do that—it has everything.”
“No Place Like It On Earth” will get distribution on HBO’s Max streaming platform and social channels in the U.S., Australia, Germany, the U.K. and parts of Asia.

Taika Waititi shares the love in latest Tourism New Zealand campaign
Taika Waititi, well known Kiwi filmmaker and actor behind Jojo Rabbit and Thor Ragnarok, is helping promote tourism in new content created by Tourism New Zealand and Augusto.
While in New Zealand filming the second series of the HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death, Taika spared some time to support New Zealand tourism.
Directed by Jackie van Beek, ‘No Place Like It On Earth’ showcases a range of sights and experiences travellers can find in Aotearoa New Zealand.
“Tourism is an important contributor to New Zealand, it’s one of our top export earners and is supporting sector and country recovery. Competition for visitors is fierce and New Zealand needs to work hard to encourage visitation and stand out. We partnered with well-known director and actor Taika Waititi to create a piece of content that promotes Aotearoa New Zealand,” said Tourism New Zealand chief executive René de Monchy.
The content, in typical comedic Taika style, showcases a range of New Zealand locations and experiences including whitewater rafting in Rotorua, a scenic flight over Mount Tarawera, dolphin watching in Kaikōura and wine tasting in Auckland. It will be used across Tourism New Zealand and HBO Max channels.
“We are working hard to attract high quality visitors who will positively contribute to New Zealand’s culture, society, nature and economy and this content will target those audiences in key markets to get them thinking about destination New Zealand,” de Monchy said.
Waititi added: “I always tell people you can go surfing in the morning and then drive a couple of hours and be skiing in the evening [in New Zealand]. I don’t think there’s anywhere else on earth where you can do that. It has everything.”
Adam Thompson, executive creative director at Augusto, said: “This was a wonderfully dizzying experience, getting to collaborate with so many amazing people, from Tourism New Zealand to Taika and Jackie, on a campaign that shows off the wonders of New Zealand in a fun and silly way.”
Jackie van Beek, the film’s director and writer who also appears in the content, says, “I had a ball on this Tourism New Zealand campaign. There’s nothing I enjoy more than pretending to be myself bickering with Taika over what makes a good director.”

Taika Waititi reluctantly helps Tourism NZ in 'No place like it on Earth' campaign
Thirty second teaser clip for the New Zealand, There's No Place Like It On Earth campaign. Credits: Tourism NZ / Getty Images
Taika Waititi reluctantly lends his services to helping Tourism New Zealand in a new promotional campaign the organisation is launching this week.
In a teaser video, fellow New Zealand filmmaker Jackie van Beek phones the Thor: Ragnarok director while he's on set filming Our Flag Means Death to remind him about an obligation to do the promotional work.
"Jackie, look I can't, I'm busy," Waititi says while hurling a sword at an enemy on the beach.
"You gotta help me out. I need you. New Zealand needs you," she replies.
Waititi, now sitting in a makeup department, solemnly says to himself: "You heard her T-Bone, New Zealand needs you. You can't let them down."
More from Newshub
The teaser clip doesn't show Waititi subsequently answering the patriotic call, but cuts to footage of white water rafting and a scenic flight over Fiordland, after earlier showing footage of a dolphin encounter boat on the Kaikōura coast.
The 30 second clip, uploaded to 100% Pure New Zealand's YouTube account on Monday, precedes a three-and-a-half minute video set to be released on Wednesday - which will "definitely" be starring Waititi, the teaser jokingly insists.
The There's No Place Like It On Earth campaign is being launched as Aotearoa seeks to attract more visitors as the tourism industry continues to recover from COVID-19.
Tourism New Zealand's Rene de Monchy told Reuters tourists from the US are a major target audience, but the promotional video will also play on social media platforms in Australia, Germany, the UK and parts of Asia.
"Competition is heating up and economic times are a bit tough in many parts of the world so we've got to keep being innovative and top of mind for people," de Monchy told Reuters.
The There's No Place Like It On Earth campaign is launching the same week as season two as the premiere of Our Flag Means Death , which was filmed in New Zealand.

New Zealand Launches New Tourism Campaign Amid Post-Covid Struggles

Tourism New Zealand acknowledges it faces fierce competition in its quest to hit pre-pandemic visitor numbers, but it believes star power will help it do the trick.

New Zealand is launching a new tourism campaign with Kiwi director and actor Taika Waititi to attract visitors after the sector was hammered by Covid-19 and border closures .
Tourism New Zealand on Wednesday will premiere a 3-1/2 minute promotional film featuring the Oscar winner and Jade Daniels, his stunt double in the HBO romantic comedy series “Our Flag Means Death” which is filmed in New Zealand.
Visitors from United States are a major target audience, said Rene de Monchy, chief executive for Tourism New Zealand. The film, shot in December 2022, will also play on social media platforms in Australia, Germany, the UK and parts of Asia.
“Competition is heating up and economic times are a bit tough in many parts of the world so we’ve got to keep being innovative and top of mind for people.”
Prior to Covid and the closure of New Zealand’s borders, international tourism was New Zealand’s largest source of foreign exchange and accounted for about 5.5% of gross domestic product.
Tourists are returning but overseas visitors in July were still 16% lower than in July 2019.
The film, which cost NZ$689,000 ($409,890) to make, highlights activities like dolphin watching in Kaikoura on the South Island’s east coast and wine tasting in the country’s largest city Auckland.

This humour is very kiwi….if the objective is to attract I international audiences to NZ then I’m unsure if achieves this?
Tourism NZ is quickly becoming one of the most schizophrenic brands in market.
This is a vanity project, I love Taika but this does nothing for brand Tourism NZ.
I think Creative accidentally left the funny script in my out tray.
You respond negatively to every idea. Not sure if you’ve noticed in your little corner of the world but businesses and people are doing it tough. Up and down the spectrum. Maybe we can just be happy about the work that gets made and has half an idea? I dont love this one but I applaud that it got made. Not making work begets not making more work. We should be pulling for the opposite
Agree. Btw @The Agency Photocopier you have the chance to be funny too but fail miserably at every opportunity.
Would a cuddly toy kiwi be better? I reckon it might.
Funny. Watched it all the way through. Big kiwi celeb known for kiwi humour that people around the work find funny too. Ties to the Taika’s new show that was shot in NZ and showcases plenty of NZ. Good for tourism. Bit lighter the serious stuff.
This is how we’re spending tax dollars in a cost of living crisis? By shamelessly promoting Taika’s latest comedy vehicle intercut with the generic tourism porn. Lazy AF.
Seriously. What’s not to like about this? NZ tourism and Taika doing funny stuff.
I’m a photocopier. And your comments need more nasty toner.
I see everything: JCRs, resignation letters, birthday invites, legal letters, arses and boobs during Xmas parties, scam ads and TV scripts.
Now that I’ve cleared that up, are you going to the Printing United Expo in Atlanta, Georgia? I’ll be there. See you at the Slurpee stand.
Does it just irk you knowing that you’re the less funny version of the Ghost of Mayoral Drive?
Not funny. Again.
I think Kiwi humour travels well around the world so people will see it as a fun place. It also looks likes a beautiful to visit.
@copier. Your tone is sounding a bit outdated and not v funny. Time for an upgrade.
Yes. Somewhere around the middle.
Wow people are coming for your throat
Is that you again copier?

Visit Taika Waititi's favourite spots in New Zealand

Despite having his hands full filming season two of Our Flag Means Death , Taika Waititi, alongside his real stunt double, Jade Daniels have starred in Tourism New Zealand's new promotional video, No Place Like it On Earth, to showcase Taika's home country.
From whitewater rafting in Rotorua and a scenic flight over Mount Tarawera, to dolphin watching in Kaikōura and wine tasting in Auckland, Taika and Jade’s jaw-dropping travels are all the proof you need that there’s no place like New Zealand on earth.
While taking a break from filming season two of his show Our Flag Means Death in New Zealand, Taikai has also revealed his own favourite places in Aotearoa, New Zealand that he recommends travellers should visit.
Recommended places to travel to in New Zealand
Tunnel beach, dunedin.
"The little beach with the little secret tunnel with the steps that you go down [Tunnel Beach, Dunedin] is amazing," Taika said. "I like the hidden-away places where you have to walk to get to them.”
Tunnel Beach, is a captivating coastal attraction celebrated for its dramatic cliffs, natural rock formations, and a hand-carved sea tunnel leading to a secluded crescent beach. The 72-meter-long tunnel was commissioned in the 19th century by John Cargill, providing private access for his family. The beach, surrounded by towering cliffs, offers stunning Pacific Ocean views and is perfect for photography and relaxation. Visitors can also explore a cliff-top walk for panoramic vistas of the Otago Peninsula.
“Fantastic Wellington, where I was raised, is always a special place to me," Taika also shared. "The south coast of Wellington was very dramatic, quite an intense place to go—it’s that beautiful."
"Then, of course, you have the North Island, and you work your way up the East Coast beaches, with nice and sunny golden sand," he continued.
"The West Coast beaches are more moody, and depending on the mood you're in, really you can get anything you want at the beaches in New Zealand."
In Wellington, New Zealand's vibrant capital city, tourists can experience a wide range of attractions and activities. They can explore the dynamic Te Papa Tongarewa Museum, showcasing the nation's art, history, and culture, or ride the iconic Wellington Cable Car for panoramic city views. Stroll along the picturesque waterfront promenade, visit the bustling Wellington Zoo, or hike through the nearby Zealandia eco-sanctuary to see native wildlife.
Tongariro National Park
Another favourite location of Taika's is Tongariro National Park - a place he visited when shooting Hunt for the Wilderpeople . “Desert Road (Tongariro National Park)... is another amazing place that I'm really happy that I got to go to," he explained, highlighting "the old, old ancient beech forests around there."
Tongariro National Park, located on New Zealand's North Island, offers tourists a truly immersive outdoor experience. Visitors can embark on one of the world's most famous day hikes, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, to witness stunning volcanic landscapes, emerald lakes, and dramatic vistas. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is home to three active volcanoes: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings trilogy), and Ruapehu. Aside from hiking, tourists can enjoy skiing and snowboarding in the winter months, mountain biking, and exploring the lush native forests.
Waihau Bay, on the East Coast and the East Cape
Taika also recommends "Waihau Bay on the East Coast; and the East Cape."
"I'm basically just naming all the places I've been to. But you know, they're all still my favourite places to go.”
“My favourite place of all time is probably Waihau Bay [Bay of Plenty] where I was brought up. This is home to me but it's very remote.”
Waihau Bay, nestled on the stunning East Coast of New Zealand's North Island, offers tourists a tranquil escape in a remote coastal paradise. Visitors can relish in the untouched beauty of the area, with its pristine beaches, lush native forests, and serene coastal waters. Fishing enthusiasts can cast a line in the bay, known for its abundant marine life. The East Cape region is renowned for its rich Maori culture, and tourists can explore historic sites, learn about traditional Maori customs, and engage in cultural experiences. The East Cape Lighthouse, perched atop a rugged cliff, offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and is a popular spot for photography.
“There’s nothing like the New Zealand landscape, especially the coastline, the west coast up here in the North Island is very unique," Taika explained, "You know, just that sand."
"I have a house out in Piha and it’s one of my favourite places. That very dark sand out there is very brooding and moody and it’s got a sort of heavy drama to it.”
Piha, located on New Zealand's North Island's west coast, is a picturesque beachside haven for tourists seeking natural beauty and outdoor adventures. The rugged black-sand beach is famous for its stunning surf and dramatic surroundings, including the iconic Lion Rock. The nearby Waitakere Ranges offer an array of hiking trails through lush rainforests, providing opportunities to explore cascading waterfalls and native flora and fauna.
New Zealand Food and Restaurant Recommendations
"The best thing that we've got is food and wine and the social scene," Taika also shared. "Being able to go out and be with people around food and dining and cafes, I think that's my favourite thing.”
“I'm really happy that New Zealand restaurants have just got better and better over the years. Some of my favourite ones at the moment, where I've eaten recently, are Lilian in Auckland, and Prego is great. Prego is an institution. Same with SPQR. Those are two solid choices. And Honey Bones, my favourite place.”
"Once I'm finished work, I don't want to go for a bush walk. I want to go home or go to a restaurant and eat awesome food with good people and have good conversation. But I am in my forties. "

The star power of Kiwi director and actor Taika Waititi has been enlisted to help boost New Zealand tourism.
Tourism New Zealand will tomorrow premiere a 3-1/2 minute promotional film featuring the Oscar winner and Jade Daniels, his stunt double in the HBO romantic comedy series "Our Flag Means Death" which is filmed in Aotearoa.
Visitors from United States are a major target audience, said Rene de Monchy, chief executive for Tourism New Zealand.
The film, shot in December 2022, will also play on social media platforms in Australia, Germany, the UK and parts of Asia.
"Competition is heating up and economic times are a bit tough in many parts of the world so we've got to keep being innovative and top of mind for people."
Prior to COVID and the closure of New Zealand's borders, international tourism was New Zealand's largest source of foreign exchange and accounted for about 5.5% of gross domestic product.
Tourists are returning but overseas visitors in July were still 16% lower than in July 2019.

Taika Waititi gets in stunt double for new hilarious Tourism New Zealand ad
“Look at that tree! Classic Taika.”
Tourism New Zealand unveiled its collaboration with the film-auteur turned tourism ambassador Taika Waititi this week.
“New Zealand needs Taika Waititi!” was the log line of the 3-minute promo, but does Taika need New Zealand?
It was hard to tell if the glitzy $673,000 TV advert was in aid of promoting tourism in Aotearoa or for the Kiwi director’s film career.
During the 180-second ad, New Zealand is mentioned three times, compared to five utterances and one written credit for Taika, Taika Waititi and “T-Bone”.
The premise of the film is that Jackie van Beek is tasked with coaxing the Marvel movie producer and his ego back to the homeland. And he does a pretty half-arsed job of it, but with a smile.
At every opportunity there was a plug for Our Flag Means Death 2. (Oh, did he mention that his pirate epic is out today?) “I just can’t let the fans down.”
The national tourism body reportedly signed a valuable deal with the HBO TV series to advertise alongside it on screens in the US.
Eventually he is reluctantly coaxed into lending his body double - Jade Daniels - and voice to the tourism project. He did okay.
It was reminiscent of one of the prop posters made for the filmmaker’s 2007 TV series Flight of the Conchords: “New Zealand, don’t expect too much - you’ll love it”.
The globally recognisable Kiwi is dragged back from the soundstages of LA and London back to humble Aotearoa for a commercial.
“I think he’s forgotten about us,” is van Beek’s wry aside. That is of course part of the humour: Taika “T-Bone” Waititi is eventually dragged back from Hollywood by tugging on his heart strings - and his self-esteem. “New Zealand needs you!”
The ad is made for the international market, particularly North America, where Waititi is arguably one of the most recognisable names in the New Zealand diaspora. The production was reportedly affected by the SAAG filming strikes in the United States.
There’s a long history of TNZ making calls to contacts in film and TV. This includes a cameo from Canadian filmmaker James Cameron - while filming the Avatar movies in Wellington. Australian actress Megan Gale was signed up as a tourism Ambassador in 2016.
Getting the Raukokore-born movie maker for Tourism NZ’s biggest budget ad in years was a boon. Of course there’s a huge amount of behind the scenes work required as the face of NZ, and Taika is already hitting the press junkets promoting our beaches abroad.
But did we ever think about looking for a Kiwi celeb from outside LaLa land?
When in 2020 Tourism New Zealand was looking for its first domestic tourism ambassador, it turned to sport - naming All Black Richie McCaw as the face of the “Do Something New” adverts.
The dark arts of marketing and audience research - will have consulted their crystal balls on the casting, to work out which New Zealand celebrity has the greatest overseas star power… and who they can afford.
While Movies are an obvious place to look for Kiwis with international name appeal, are there other Great New Zealanders who are being overlooked?

Taika Waititi stars in Tourism New Zealand Campaign – There’s No Place Like It On Earth
Celebrated New Zealand actor and director, Taika Waititi, has teamed up with Tourism New Zealand to deliver a new promotional film – despite a packed schedule filming HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death Season 2 in Aotearoa New Zealand.
With Taika busy on set filming Our Flag Means Death Season 2 – for which Aotearoa New Zealand is the official shoot location – Taika and Tourism New Zealand enlisted real-life stunt double, Jade Daniels, to help undertake the epic task of presenting New Zealand to the world.
Directed by Jackie van Beek, the playful short film ‘No Place Like It On Earth’ showcases the thrilling sights and experiences travelers can find in Aotearoa New Zealand, with a line-up of landscapes so mesmerizing, it’s possible no one will notice the star of the show may or may not be who he seems. From whitewater rafting in Rotorua and a scenic flight over Mount Tarawera, to dolphin watching in Kaikōura and wine tasting in Auckland, Waititi and Daniels’ jaw-dropping travels leave both convinced that there’s no place like New Zealand on earth.
“I always tell people you can go surfing in the morning and then drive a couple of hours and be skiing in the evening [in New Zealand]. I don’t think there’s anywhere else on earth where you can do that. It has everything,” says Waititi.
Follow in the footsteps of New Zealand director and actor Taika Waititi (Captain Blackbeard)
This itinerary is your guide to a world of adventure, intrigue, and self-discovery that mirrors the essence of the show.
Be captivated by Auckland’s wild west coast beaches, where nature’s raw beauty reigns supreme. Venture to Piha, where the iconic Lion Rock stands guard over pristine black sands. A key filming location for Our Flag Means Death Season 2, here you can watch the ocean beat against the sea cliffs, or on calmer days, explore the rocky tide pools against your rugged backdrop. Alternatively, visit nearby Bethell’s Beach to scale the sand dunes and take in sweeping vistas. Before visiting, always make sure you check weather conditions and potential closures, and always follow the instructions of lifeguards.
Experience indulgence at Westbrook Winery, where Taika Waititi, stunt double Jade Daniels, and director Jackie van Beek conclude their epic journey through New Zealand in the 100% Pure New Zealand film ‘No Place Like It On Earth’ . Uncover the secrets of New Zealand’s finest wines, savour each sip, and delight in artisanal cheeses and local delicacies. Established as one of New Zealand’s oldest and most esteemed boutique wineries, Westbrook is a must-visit for wine enthusiasts.
Alternatively, enjoy dinner at Prego, a personally favored choice of Taika Waititi in Auckland. The menu orchestrates Italian-inspired dishes using prime local ingredients. With a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere and outstanding service, each visit becomes a lasting memory. Opt for the courtyard beneath the robinia tree or the cozy indoor setting, both ensuring an enjoyable time.
“Prego is great. Prego is an institution. ” – Taika Waititi
Venture to the Coromandel Peninsula for a geothermal spa in nature at Hot Water Beach, mentioned as a favorite spot of Taika’s in ‘No Place Like It On Earth’ . With a spade in hand, carve out your own private paradise in the sands and create a natural hot pool, letting the warm embrace of the earth soothe your senses. This is relaxation, adventure, and a connection with nature in its purest form.
Explore the geothermal marvels that make this destination unique, from bubbling mud pools to steaming geysers, each offering a glimpse into the earth’s fiery heart. Swim, sail, or jetboat on one of the 18 surrounding lakes, or immerse yourself in Māori traditions at Te Puia, where the Pohutu geyser dances and ancient arts thrive.
Like Taika’s stunt double Jade Daniels, take a scenic flight with Volcanic Air to Mount Tarawera, where a gourmet picnic amidst stunning vistas awaits. As you relish each bite, let the panoramic views etch themselves into your memory.
Or, make like Jade and ride the rapids with Kaitiaki Adventures. Navigate the iconic Tutea Falls, the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world, and enjoy an adrenaline rush that perfectly complements the untamed beauty surrounding you.
Journey to Taupō and stand in awe before the majestic Huka Falls – a symphony of raw power and beauty, mentioned by Taika in a list of iconic New Zealand locations in ‘No Place Like It On Earth’. The roaring waters cascade with a force that defies description, leaving you humbled and captivated in its presence. A leisurely walk along the riverbanks offers an intimate connection with nature’s grandeur.
Wellington proudly stands as the film capital of New Zealand, famed for hosting the production of numerous blockbuster movies including The Lord of the Rings , Avatar , District 9 and The Chronicles of Narnia . With its stunning landscapes and state-of-the-art facilities, the city has attracted filmmakers worldwide, contributing to its vibrant cinematic culture. Explore Wellington’s streets and you might just find yourself amidst the magic of the big screen.
Enjoy an iconic ride on the Wellington Cable Car, taking in panoramic cityscape views as it glides up to the lush Botanic Garden. Connecting Lambton Quay to Kelburn, this charming cable car ride provides a memorable and picturesque experience of New Zealand’s capital. Explore the rugged south coast of Wellington by walking from Owhiro Bay to the Red Rocks (Pari- whero); an area of national significance with fascinating geology and Māori history. If you have more time, continue on to Sinclair Head, where a New Zealand fur seal colony resides from May to October, populated by bachelor males who were unsuccessful in their breeding rank attempts in the South Island colonies.
Dine at Hiaki, a restaurant renowned for presenting the flavors of Aotearoa with contemporary flair and mentioned by Taika Waititi as a personal favorite. Delight in authentic dishes that honor Māori heritage, inviting you to savor the essence of New Zealand’s indigenous gastronomy in every exquisite bite.
“ Wellington, where I was raised, is always a special place to me. The south coast of Wellington was very dramatic, quite an intense place to go, very beautiful.” – Taika Waititi
Experience the thrill of a lifetime by getting up close and personal with New Zealand’s playful dusky dolphins. Just as Taika Waititi embarked on a quest to unveil New Zealand’s hidden treasures, you can embark on a journey with Dolphin Encounter to discover these graceful marine mammals in their natural habitat. Departing from the picturesque shores of Kaikōura, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the South Island’s coastline, a place where the majestic Southern Alps meet the ocean.
Described by Taika Waititi as a bit of a hidden gem, venture to Dunedin’s Tunnel Beach and be entranced by nature’s dramatic canvas. Over centuries, the Southern Ocean’s salt-laden winds have crafted a stunning sandstone coastline adorned with majestic cliffs, arches, and headlands, offering endless breathtaking viewpoints. Follow a fenced path downhill to unveil the hand-carved rock tunnel, which lends its name to the beach. Dating back to the 1870s, this passage guides you to a secluded, sheltered haven at the cliffs’ base.
“The little beach with the little secret tunnel with the steps that you go down [Tunnel Beach, Dunedin], that place is amazing. I like the little hidden-away places where you have to walk to get to them. So Tunnel Beach, south side of the needle is great itself.” – Taika Waititi
Travel to the Waitaki Coast and be amazed by the Moeraki Boulders on Koekohe Beach, an iconic New Zealand destination mentioned by Taika in ‘No Place Like It On Earth’. These captivating ancient spherical formations are strewn along the shore, some towering over two metres and possessing an almost otherworldly appearance, shaped over millions of years.
Steeped in Māori legend, these natural wonders are believed to be remnants of a wrecked voyaging canoe. Their ethereal allure and cultural importance form a distinctive destination that entwines nature’s artistry and vibrant folklore.
Central Otago
Nestled in the heart of Central Otago, Clyde is a historic town that encapsulates the region’s gold rush legacy. Its charming streets, adorned with heritage buildings, exude an old-world allure that beautifully complements the surrounding natural beauty. Situated alongside the Clutha River, Clyde serves as a gateway to cycling adventures, nearby vineyards, and stone fruit orchards.
Notably, the esteemed Two Paddocks Vineyard, owned by actor Sam Neill and mentioned by Taika Waititi as a personal favorite, lies in proximity. Much like Clyde’s blend of history and nature, the wines of Two Paddocks reflect the intricate landscape, inviting enthusiasts to relish the very essence of Central Otago with each sip.

New Zealand starts new tourism campaign
Tuesday, October 3, 2023 Favorite
With Kiwi director and actor, Taika Waititi from New Zealand is introducing a new tourism campaign with a mission to draw visitors after tourism was beaten by the pandemic situation and borders were closed.
On Wednesday, Tourism New Zealand will début a 3-1/starts new 2-minute promotional film. It will feature the Oscar winner along with Jade Daniels, his stunt double in the romantic comedy series in HBO television channel – Our Flag Means Death. It was filmed in New Zealand.
Tourists from the United States are the main target audiences over here, said the chief executive for Tourism New Zealand, Rene de Monchy. The film was actually shot in December 2022. It will be also played on social media platforms in Germany, Australia, the UK and few sections of Asia.
Competition is constantly growing up and financially times are little bit tough in several regions of the world so they’ve got to maintain their innovative nature and top of mind for people.
Before COVID and the close down of the borders of New Zealand, international tourism was the biggest largest source of foreign exchange for New Zealand. Overseas tourism accounted for roughly 5.5% of the GDP.
Tourists are now coming back but in July 2023, international visitors were still 16% lower than July 2019.

Taika Waititi Saves The Day In Cheeky Tourism New Zealand Campaign
Taika Waititi, well known New Zealand born filmmaker and actor is helping promote tourism in new content created by Tourism New Zealand and Augusto.
While in New Zealand filming HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death Season 2, Waititi spared some time to support New Zealand tourism.
The content, in typical comedic Waititi style, showcases a range of New Zealand locations and experiences including whitewater rafting in Rotorua, a scenic flight over Mount Tarawera, dolphin watching in Kaikōura and wine tasting in Auckland. It will be used across Tourism New Zealand and HBO Max channels.
“We are working hard to attract high quality visitors who will positively contribute to New Zealand’s culture, society, nature and economy and this content will target those audiences in key markets to get them thinking about destination New Zealand.”
Academy Award-winning writer, director, actor, producer and New Zealand native, Waititi said “I always tell people you can go surfing in the morning and then drive a couple of hours and be skiing in the evening [in New Zealand]. I don’t think there’s anywhere else on earth where you can do that. It has everything.”
Adam Thompson, executive creative director at Augusto, said, “This was a wonderfully dizzying experience, getting to collaborate with so many amazing people, from Tourism New Zealand to Taika and Jackie, on a campaign that shows off the wonders of New Zealand in a fun and silly way.”
Jackie van Beek, the film’s director and writer who also appears in the content, said, “I had a ball on this Tourism New Zealand campaign. There’s nothing I enjoy more than pretending to be myself bickering with Taika over what makes a good director.”

Tourism New Zealand and Taika Waititi team up for new promotional film
Taika Waititi hatches a foolproof plan to promote Aotearoa New Zealand.
Celebrated New Zealand actor and director Taika Waititi has teamed up with Tourism New Zealand to deliver a new promotional film – despite a packed schedule filming the HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death Season 2 in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
With Taika busy on set – for which Aotearoa, New Zealand is the official shoot location – Taika and Tourism New Zealand enlisted real-life stunt double Jade Daniels to help present New Zealand to the world.
Directed by Jackie van Beek, the playful short film ‘No Place Like It On Earth’ showcases the thrilling sights and experiences travellers can find in Aotearoa with a line-up of mesmerising landscapes.
From whitewater rafting in Rotorua and a scenic flight over Mount Tarawera to dolphin watching in Kaikōura and wine tasting in Auckland, Waititi and Daniels’ jaw-dropping travels leave both convinced that there’s no place like New Zealand.
“There’s nothing like the New Zealand landscape, especially the coastline. The west coast up here in the North Island is very unique. You know, just that sand. I have a house out in Piha, and it’s one of my favourite places. That very dark sand out there is very brooding and moody, and it’s got a sort of heavy drama to it,” said Waititi.
“I always tell people you can go surfing in the morning and then drive a couple of hours and be skiing in the evening [in New Zealand]. I don’t think there’s anywhere else on earth where you can do that. It has everything.”
Scenes filmed or depicted in iconic locations around New Zealand for Our Flag Means Death Season 2 include Bethell’s Beach, Piha Beach, and the Bay of Islands, each offering awe-inspiring natural beauty fit for a swashbuckling romantic comedy.
Working with Taika Waititi was a welcome opportunity to promote tourism – an important contributor to New Zealand as one of its top export earners supporting sector and country recovery.
“Taika Waititi is one of New Zealand’s most well-known international talents, and with a bit of Kiwi ingenuity, we came up with a creative solution to work within his busy schedule. The result sees Taika and Jade discovering some of the most incredible experiences that Taika’s home country, Aotearoa New Zealand, has to offer,” says René de Monchy, Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive.

Waititi stars in a new video (above) promoting tourism to the destination, which he shot while filming season two of HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death.

'Lord of the Rings' Backdrops Drive Big Bets on New Zealand Golf
(Bloomberg) -- The golf courses are gorgeous. But they’re very far away.
That’s the challenge facing the wealthy investors who are pumping money into New Zealand’s golf industry in a bid to draw Americans and other international travelers to the bottom of the world. On the one hand are world-class courses tucked between snow-capped mountains and glacier-fed lakes high atop the Pacific Ocean. On the other hand? The flight from New York takes about 18 hours .
But in an era of YOLO travel , developers are betting that New Zealand can grab more of the roughly $24 billion global golf tourism market, which is expected to grow an estimated 60% over the next 10 years.
California financier Ric Kayne is backing his fourth golf project in the country this year, while former Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. Chief Executive Jonathan Lu announced plans to build a championship course on a beachside farm west of Auckland. Construction is also in progress on two exclusive courses in the South Island resort towns of Wanaka and Arrowtown, near Queenstown — favorite locations for billionaires seeking a sanctuary far away from the world’s turmoil .
Golfers tend to be relatively wealthy and, as the thinking goes, groups of North Americans who travel to play courses in Ireland and Scotland, or Brits and Europeans who go to the US, might be open to a longer journey for a bucket list trip. Closer to home, the New Zealand projects are looking to compete against courses in Australia and Vietnam for well-heeled Asian tourists.
“New Zealand has great golf, the scenery is out of this world and so is the food and wine,” said Jim Rohrstaff, an American who became Kayne’s business partner on the golf projects after meeting him at the Vintage Club in Indian Wells, California. “It adds up to a complete package — that’s why we're bullish on it and why we're building more.”
With a population of slightly more than 5 million, New Zealand ranks high globally in the number of golf courses per capita, alongside Scotland and Ireland. Its dune-dotted coastline and rolling pastures are well-suited for the sport, and the year-round temperate weather is a draw, particularly for Australians and Asian travelers who want to escape sweltering heat.

And of course, the scenery is hard to beat. Peter Jackson, who wrote and directed the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, is from New Zealand and there are filming locations across the country .
Still, New Zealand is a relative newcomer to high-end golf. Historically, it was dominated by modest, local clubs. That started to change about 20 years ago in large part because of the late Tiger Management founder Julian Robertson, who was pivotal in spreading the word on Wall Street about golf in the nation.
The hedge fund billionaire, who fell in love with New Zealand after a trip in the 1970s and amassed substantial assets there before he died in 2022, developed two high-end golf courses, Kauri Cliffs and the Tom Doak-designed Cape Kidnappers, in the early 2000s, each featuring a luxury lodge.
“He had everyone scratching their heads wondering what an astute investor like him was doing building golf courses in New Zealand,” said John Darby, a property developer and golf architect who’s been involved in many of the nation’s top courses including the Jack’s Point course in Queenstown.
Among the frequent visitors to the courses developed by Robertson was Kayne, the co-founder of Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors. He eventually called Darby “out of the blue looking for a piece of land for a golf course.”
That project became Tara Iti , a members-only course north of Auckland that opened in 2015 and is ranked by Golf Digest as one of the best in the world outside the US. They quickly followed that with two more courses at the nearby Te Arai Links .
Rohrstaff and Kayne’s current project is a redevelopment of The Hills near Queenstown, a private course ringed by mountains and overlooking Lake Hayes. They are undertaking it alongside the family of New Zealand jeweler Michael Hill. Lu’s course is expected to open in 2027 on a 500-hectare (1,235-acre) farm in Muriwai that he bought in 2020.

Despite the abundance of viable locations, the business of developing courses in New Zealand isn’t easy. It requires deep pockets — Rohrstaff estimates the two Te Arai Links projects cost a combined NZ$200 million ($121 million) — while the regulatory approval process can take many years. Then there’s opposition from environmental groups and the nation’s ban on most foreigners buying property.
Darby is currently building a course at Glendhu Bay on Lake Wanaka, a few miles from the site where billionaire investor Peter Thiel hopes to build a luxury lodge . The project was in the works for 20 years before a shovel hit the ground.
Repeat Visitors
New Zealand’s golf tourism industry grew in value to NZ$425 million in 2019, three times what it was in 2012, partly by targeting country clubs in US cities with direct flights to the country. They also appealed to Australians to make the short trip across the Tasman Sea.
That momentum was derailed by the pandemic, and now, as travelers once again jet across the globe, the competition for golf tourism dollars is even more intense. Golfers tend to spend more and stay longer than average leisure travelers, according to David Griffiths, events manager at International Golf Travel Market. And other countries have taken notice, as courses pop up in locations such as Kenya, Vietnam, Bermuda and Barbados.
New Zealand is 5,500 miles from Tokyo, 6,500 miles from Los Angeles and 11,400 miles from London and the geographical isolation means most people see it as a once in a lifetime destination. With that in mind, the industry has deliberately shied away from the so-called “buddies trip” model that is popular with Americans who visit Ireland and Scotland — not to mention Arizona, South Carolina and Florida — for shorter trips where the mostly male groups don’t do much else besides golf, according to Ryan Brandeburg, an American golf pro who runs a consulting business behind the course that Lu is developing and another near Queenstown.
Brandeburg first traveled New Zealand in 2009 to oversee Robertson’s courses. On a flight on his first day in the country, he happened to sit next to then Prime Minister John Key, who invited him to play a round. He was subsequently tapped to help develop a golf tourism strategy and has been involved ever since.
These days, he said, it’s pivotal to boost development so that there are “clusters” of courses near Queenstown and Auckland that help golf tourists justify the long trip. He also wants them to bring the whole family.
“We want couples traveling together, families traveling together,” Brandeburg said. “Golf is still the hero of their visit, but if they played four or five rounds of golf in 15 days, we would be very happy because all those other days they're spending money doing other things.”
