Why Newfoundland and Labrador is the place to be in 2023

Thousands answered the call to Come Home 2022, reinvigorating festivals and events, and re-energizing communities and tourism operators. Now, the stage is set for an unmissable 2023

Whale-watching is a must-do in Newfoundland and Labrador. supplied

It was the celebration everyone had been craving. Music and food festivals, paused or downsized in recent years due to COVID-19, returned with gleeful exuberance. Theatres were full and hiking trails well-trodden. Friends, relatives and first-time visitors were welcomed with warmth and homegrown hospitality. Even the icebergs and whales turned up to put on a show for Come Home 2022.

“I am ecstatic,” says Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey of the past year’s Come Home celebrations. “And I think most people around the province would echo that sentiment.” For Furey, it was the first summer since being elected in 2020 that he could really get out and about, connecting with people all over the province.

As he visited community events, unannounced, he saw small towns that had doubled in size. Music poured out of venues and homes while food, drinks and laughs were shared. It was an experience to treasure for everyone.

“It fills your heart and gives you more energy to see more of this big, big, beautiful province, to soak in the spirit of the people,” he says.

With Come Home 2022 festivities a roaring success, a consensus rang out from coast to coast: Let’s keep the celebrations going in 2023.

Renewed excitement

With the province’s legendary natural beauty as spectacular and unspoiled as ever, many visitors finally got to check experiencing it off their bucket list in 2022.

This year’s tourism season crept into the shoulder seasons, amping up in early May and lasting well into the fall, an ideal time for hikers, trail-runners and those looking to avoid peak travel times.

Around every corner is a wonder in Newfoundland and Labrador . Choice hotspots include stunning Gros Morne National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage site spanning 1,800 square kilometres of towering cliffs, breathtaking views and thundering waterfalls. At the Tablelands, visitors can walk upon the earth’s mantle, a rich red landscape exposed by the collision of tectonic plates millions of years ago.

At L’Anse aux Meadows , another UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors can travel back in time in a recreation of an 11th-century Viking port. Then there’s Iceberg Alley (stretching from the coast of Labrador to the southeast coast of the island of Newfoundland), the best place in the world to see the 10,000-year-old floating giants drift past on ocean currents. In places like Trinity, Cape Bonavista and St. Anthony – all along Iceberg Alley, in fact – pods of whales frolic and splash. Meanwhile, at Witless Bay Ecological Reserve , thousands of black, white, orange and yellow puffins gather to nest and raise their young.

For many musicians and other artists, the return of full-capacity live events in 2022 – from Twillingate’s Fish, Fun, and Folk to the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival in St. John’s – was a joy. Overall, nearly 200 communities held special events in 2022 – some well-established and many newly created.

Kellie Walsh, artistic director of Lady Cove Women’s Choir and Shallaway Youth Choir, was part of the team premiering a new musical, Sidewalk Dandelion, written by Newfoundlander Kyle McDavid and starring Shallaway’s neurodiverse ensemble, Lauda. Lady Cove Choir also embarked on a provincial tour with the Atlantic String Quartet and folk singer Matthew Byrne and enjoyed packed houses at every stop.

Fortunately for locals and visitors alike, Walsh says the renewed energy for group celebrations and event planning is carrying over to 2023.

“We’re reinvigorated,” she says. “When people see the possibilities of what can happen with some investment and a lot of inspiration – I’ve seen the impact on myself, my art, the audience, the community. It can’t not continue.”

After the resounding success of Come Home 2022, the music and celebrations continue in 2023. Supplied

One sure-fire hot ticket for 2023 will be Come from Away: You Are Here . This highly-anticipated production, with the same book, music and lyrics as the original Come From Away , is a reimagined version helmed by originating producer Michael Rubinoff and renowned Newfoundland and Labrador director Jillian Keiley. Like the original, the musical tells the story of 7,000 air passengers stranded in Newfoundland and Labrador on 9/11, and it will be performed in Gander with four shows per week from July 7 to September 3, 2023.

Sports and recreation also saw a renewed burst of energy in 2022. Rowing fans flocked to Quidi Vidi Lake to celebrate the 204th anniversary of the Royal St. John’s Regatta (the oldest continuing sporting event in North America). Hockey player Alex Newhook, a member of the Colorado Avalanche who is originally from St. John’s, returned home with the Stanley Cup. And the training camp for Canada’s National Para Hockey Team came to the town of Paradise.

Liam Hickey, a two-time winter Paralympic medalist and St. John’s local, helped bring the camp to the province and was delighted with its reception by his para hockey colleagues and those who took in their public events.

“Everyone loves coming to the Rock,” Hickey says of his home province. “We made the event happen with a quick turnaround; it was worth it to see how much people enjoy coming to the province and how much they love it when they’re here.”

The spirit of the people

According to a Statistics Canada report released in June 2022, 61.7 per cent of Newfoundland and Labrador residents said they considered themselves to be very satisfied with their lives, the highest level of satisfaction in the country.

As University of British Columbia happiness researcher Dr. John Helliwell told the Vancouver Sun at the time, it’s not the land but the people that live on it that make the difference.

“[It’s] that sense in which, when you are out in public, these are all people that would help you when you fell down and tripped,” he says.

That may be the magic that draws people back to Newfoundland and Labrador, whether they have family roots in the province or not.

“People say to me, ‘I’ve seen the tourism commercials, and is it really like that?’ And then they come here and they say, ‘I can’t believe it’s really like that,’” says Walsh. “It’s beautiful, and it’s real. The humanity is palpable.”

Premier Furey echoes the sentiment.

“Newfoundland and Labrador is an incredible tourism destination,” he says. “It’s beyond the massive landscapes and vistas, although they are jaw-dropping. And it’s beyond the marvellous hikes, although they’re fun and entertaining and great exercise… When you talk to people who come back to visit the province again and again, It’s the spirit of the people. It’s the open hearts and open minds of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“And if you’ve been, we will welcome you back.”

New N.L. tourism strategy emphasizes the three Ts in bid to overcome COVID-19

Industry looks to transition, transform and thrive following pandemic pitfalls.

Social Sharing

The Newfoundland and Labrador tourism industry, still fragile following years of pandemic pitfalls, has revealed a blueprint for recovery called Vision 2026.

Dozens of industry leaders gathered at The Rooms in St. John's on Wednesday to unveil a strategy to help the sector transition, transform and thrive following a period of upheaval that accompanied the global pandemic.

"COVID really turned a lot of this industry on its head," Marieke Gow, owner of the Artisan Inn and Vacation Homes and the Twine Loft restaurant in Trinity, told CBC News.

"We've seen ourselves the suffering of the tourism industry," added Karen Smith, who, along with Michael Laduke, operates the SeaGlass B&B and Studio in New Perlican.

But despite the challenges, there were plenty of smiles Wednesday as government and industry leaders gathered, encouraged by the new strategy and strong signals this summer that the sector is in recovery mode.

"We're getting a lot more accommodations. A lot more visitors. And we just hope it continues," said Laduke.

"Our province has the opportunity to be one of the best tourism industries in the world and I think this gets us a step closer to that," said Gow.

"It's a great initiative. We're very excited about it."

newfoundland tourism ads 2023

Vision 2026 is a product of the province's tourism board, which worked closely with leaders in the tourism, hospitality and cultural industry sectors.

The plan hopes to build on a prior strategy that grew tourism into an industry with annual revenues that exceed $1 billion and support 20,000 jobs.

Under the new strategy, as in previous plans, industry leaders will continue efforts to attract more visitors, entice more investment and ensure those visitors have the time of their lives.

But now there's also an emphasis on protecting the environment and addressing another big challenge: filling all those tourism jobs.

"We've become a much bigger, better industry, but that's made it more complicated," said Gow, who was part of the team that developed Vision 2026. "And this is a real guiding light as to how we're going to really embrace everything that's coming with that change."

Big challenges persist

Year 1 of the new strategy will focus on stabilizing the industry and trying to return visitation numbers to pre-pandemic levels, while the longer-term vision is to adapt to the ever-changing tourism landscape.

But big challenges persist, such as a limitation on flights into the province, availability of rental vehicles, and the rise of environmentally conscious tourists who may view this province as a carbon footprint too far.

"The numbers in tourism aren't going to grow as rapidly as they did before because of the hesitation of people … when you think about a new green economy," said Tourism Minister Steve Crocker.

So the goal is to maximize the experience for those who visit.

"We're coming out of a situation that nobody had ever seen before. But right now this is about transitioning to what's next," said Crocker.

There are no visitation targets in the plan, because there's too much uncertainty.

And unlike this year, when the province invested $20 million to help the industry recovery from the pandemic, there's no big new pot of government money.

But attendees at Wednesday's event offered praise for the government's support.

"The initiative from the government with the advertising, the promotion; it's just great. It's perfect," said Karen Smith.

My Husband and I truly enjoyed the small group of 9 . Any more than this wouldn't have felt like a family. Our group gelled well. The van would not be big enough if more persons were in the group. Highly recommend NOT to have a larger group for other tours. Everyone was interested in everything we did and saw. Everyone was at the same level of ability and agility. Our Tour guide Simon was very flexible with options if weather wasn't in our favour. Would recommend Simon for other tours. He was very knowledgable on our Newfoundland tour.

Scenic Wonders of Newfoundland and Labrador (14 Days)

Did not see the Wellness Person doing a lot to help -definitely could have done more. Scenery was beautiful and a ordinary tourist would probably not travel all those mkm to see so many historical and special areas. Definitely benefitted from a tour director who was born in Newfoundland and a bus driver who lives there currently and knows all the hot spots. Placing a map up on the screen everyday would give us a better idea of where we were going that day. Even though it was weather related, still feel a little gypped that we couldn't do the Labrador portion of the trip. No icebergs, no moose, no Labrador, no whales.RGreat weather for the most part though

Karen and Cliff were the best guide and driver. So organized and just a pleasure to be with. The daily activities were excellent. The accommodations were as good as can be expected in that area. We never had much time to unwind between between into our rooms and dinner. Dinner at 6:30 is just too early for us. The food was okay but often served cold and always rushed. My husband's gluten free diet was easily catered to by all locations.

This was one of the best tours I have had with Globus, and I have done many! James, the tour director, and Clarence, the driver were fantastic. They were very helpful, kind, funny, and informative. Globus says up front that some of the accommodations may not be up to their usual standards because of the remoteness of the locations, but all were very clean with friendly staff. A lot of ground was covered and a lot was included with this tour: a ferry ride plus three different boat excursions. No complaints!

What an excellent tour and an excellent value. The tour director for Atlantic Tours went over and above. They undersold what we would be doing on our itinerary and we did so much more than advertised. However do your research for when to visit because the prime time to visit seems to be between mid June to early July.

New tourist accommodations act and regulations proclaimed.

  • Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation

April 4, 2023

Today the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador proclaimed the new Tourist Accommodations Act and regulations, which aim to strengthen operating rules for short-term accommodations in Newfoundland and Labrador.

In the past, short-term accommodations had to be licensed by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation under the Tourist Establishment Act. However, the new Tourist Accommodations Act requires all short-term accommodations to be registered with the department. This process will provide the department with a full registry of short-term accommodations in the province, all of which will be required to comply with applicable municipal and provincial regulations, including the requirement for fire inspections and taxation.

The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation will work with other Provincial Government departments and municipalities to support the enforcement of the Act and regulations. Failure to comply with the new requirements could result in financial penalties, as offences will carry a minimum fine of $250 with a maximum fine of $2,000.

To ease the transition process, any accommodations currently licensed by the department will be automatically registered. All others will have to register by March 31, 2024.

The Tourist Accommodations Act received Royal Assent in the House of Assembly in November 2020, replacing the former Tourism Establishments Act. Prior to its introduction in the House of Assembly, an online questionnaire was administered that engaged tourism and hospitality stakeholders on short-term accommodations in the province. Since then, the department has been regularly engaged with key stakeholders, such as Hospitality NL and Municipalities NL.

Further details on the Tourist Accommodations Act, including the regulations can be found  online.

Quotes “For quite some time now, our tourism and hospitality stakeholders have been calling for a more level playing field between licensed and unlicensed accommodations. While the new Act and regulations alone will not address all issues, it is an important step forward. The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation will now be aware of all operators offering overnight accommodations, and will have the ability to provide regulation, improving our visitor experience. We will continue to work with stakeholders as we move forward in our implementation and evaluation.” Honourable Steve Crocker Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation

“This has been a long-standing advocacy issue for Hospitality NL and its members. The Newfoundland and Labrador tourism industry welcomes these new regulations and feels it’s certainly a positive step in leveling the playing field for all short-term rental accommodators.” Deborah Bourden Chair, Hospitality NL

“Destination St. John’s is pleased to see the proclamation of the new Tourism Accommodations Act today, which will support our marketing of the St. John’s region.   Of greatest importance is the registration of unlicensed accommodations in the short-term rental market. This registration will require all accommodators to comply with regulatory requirements around health and safety, taxation, permits and licenses, thereby elevating the quality of the overall visitor experience in our destination.” Heather McKinnon Chair, Destination St. John’s
