The Starlight Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

11/22/2022   |   Blog , Walt Disney World

INCREDIBLE!! This is how I would describe my recent after-dark safari tour through the savannas at Animal Kingdom Lodge. It was kind of like that old cowboy song, you know...." Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam, Where the deer and the antelope play ". Okay, it’s not exactly like that, but you get where I’m going. From a giraffe who practically stuck her head inside our open-air safari vehicle, to a few zebras who had no intention of moving off our path, and the giant Ankole cattle who's only concern was finishing his dinner. My family and I were amazed at the amount of wildlife we saw during our 1-hour tour.

night time safari disney

The Starlight Safari is currently offered nightly, weather permitting, at 8:30 pm and 10:00 pm, and the cost is $75 - $89 per person, before tax. Reservations are required, and payment is due at time of booking. Check-in for the safari starts about 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour, near the valet area at Kidani Village. Valid ID is required and each guest over 18 must sign a waiver for themselves and any minors in their party under age 17. Please note that the minimum age to participate in the tour is 8 years old, and any guests under 17 years old must be accompanied by an adult. After completing the check-in process, my family climbed into the ride vehicle and were given a night-vision device which made seeing everything in the dark very clear. Each tour has 2 guides. A driver who works very hard to get your vehicle in and out of the savanna's multiple gate systems without any escapee's sneaking behind and the riding guide, who is inside the vehicle to explain everything you are seeing.

night time safari disney

These guides work closely with the animal’s day in and day out and are extremely knowledgeable about each individual one. They know the names, personalities, and likes and dislikes of each one you encounter. They have funny stories, sad stories, and even birth stories! You name it, the guides can tell you about it! My son is very inquisitive and asked many questions and our guide was able to answer each one promptly. During our trek, we went through 3 different savannas’ and saw and learned something different each time.

night time safari disney

Fun Fact : Did you know that giraffe eat up to 75 pounds of food per day, and to accomplish that, they must eat almost the whole time they are awake!

night time safari disney

During the many times we would encounter wildlife, the guides would stop the vehicle and encourage everyone to get up and take a good look. With the night-vision devices, seeing the wildlife was not hard at all. This experience was definitely the highlight of our vacation and something we’d be more then willing to do again!

night time safari disney

My family was lucky enough to be staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge during our visit to Walt Disney World, but reservations are open to everyone. Keep in mind, this tour has very limited availability with only about 25 spaces between both tours. If you think this is something you'd like to experience, reach out to your favorite Me and The Mouse Travel Specialist soon and tell them you want to go on a nighttime adventure through an African game reserve!

Night Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

NightsafariatAK

When I started planning our itinerary for our last Disney World trip I set out to find something new for my husband and I to experience. It just so happened it was going to be our first trip where we were going to call Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge our home away from home. When I started researching the resort I discovered that they offer exclusive tours to guests who stay at the resort! Jackpot!

The night safari caught my eye as soon as I read “night vision goggles!” I mean who wouldn’t LOVE to play with night vision goggles? I was SOLD. I called and made a reservation for the two of us.

Things to remember when you call and make a reservation for this awesome experience;

  • Call (or contact your Travel With the Magic Agent) as soon as you know you want to partake in the night safari. They only take 10 people on each nightly safari so space is limited. The number to call is 407-938-4755.
  • You HAVE to be a guest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. What an awesome excuse (you don’t really need an excuse to stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge BUT in case you needed an EXTRA push this tour could be it!) to try this beautiful resort!
  • Guest must be at least 8 years old to partake in the safari AND guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult participant.
  • Payment is due at the time of booking.

The rendezvous point for the night safari is at the check-in station for Sanaa. Sanaa is a beautiful table service restaurant located in the Kidani Village section of the Animal Kingdom Lodge. It serves African cooking with Indian flavors. If you stay in the main house of The Animal Kingdom Lodge or Jambo House, it is a quick and very pleasant walk over. Tip: Take advantage of being in the vicinity of Sanaa. Knowing that we would be partaking in this tour I made reservations for dinner before our 9:45pm safari check in time. It was a great precursor to our safari!

Sanaa

After our delicious dinner (I highly recommend the bread service.) we went back to the station where we checked in for dinner and checked in for the safari. They gave us glow in the dark bracelets and told us to charge them on one of the light fixtures. I wondered to myself what these bracelets where for and before I could even finish my thought the cast member said to me “you will need them so the guide doesn’t lose you.” I chuckled and sat down to wait for the rest of our adventure group and guides. Surely he was joking right? Everyone soon arrived and our safari guides joined us . The first thing our guide said was, “Great you all have your bracelets on so I don’t lose you out there.” The original cast member must have witnessed my look of surprise, chuckled and said, “See? I wasn’t kidding!” Well played guys, well played.

safaribraclet

At 10pm sharp we boarded our safari truck, were given instruction on how to use our night vision goggles and off we went to explore. It was amazing. The animals were out in full force and we even had a mischievous young giraffe try to join us in our safari jeep! (I’m still sad I wasn’t fast enough to catch a photo on the night vision goggles of said giraffe. He caught me off guard and taking a photo thru night vision goggles isn’t the easiest thing in the world! Next time!)

Take a look at him! Isn’t he the cutest? Side note: Learning to take a photo thru night vision goggles is no joke!

zebra

I was also excited to find out that a portion of the tour price is donated to the Disney Conservation Fund! At the end of the tour we were given a special pin showing that we were conservation heroes.

Overall, I highly recommend the night safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. We loved our hour long ride on the wild side! Are you ready to try out a night safari? I would love to help! Contact me at [email protected] , on Facebook or by phone at 1-800-670-4312, ext. 143.

Tips for Experiencing Animal Kingdom at Night

tree-life-awakenings-animal-kingdom-walt-disney-world-016

Starting this summer, Animal Kingdom has been ‘awakening’ at night, for several new experiences that keep the park open well into the night. From Jungle Book: Alive with Magic to Tree of Life Awakenings, and more, there’s a variety of new entertainment that offers a new experience for guests experiencing Animal Kingdom after dark.

We’ve been really excited for this. Since first visiting Animal Kingdom during evening Extra Magic Hours a few years ago, I’ve yearned for additional chances to experience nighttime at Animal Kingdom. Before the new Animal Kingdom at Night summer offerings debuted, I went as far as to predict that this would be a game changer–Animal Kingdom’s coming out party .

Well…it wasn’t. I was definitely wrong on that one. Still, it was awesome being in Animal Kingdom after sunset, and there was a lot to enjoy about the experience, even if there were some misfires. The biggest misfire was the lack of Rivers of Light. This would have been the anchor of Animal Kingdom at night, and it has been delayed indefinitely. Had Rivers of Light opened as planned, I think some of the other issues we’ll discuss wouldn’t have been as significant.

In fairness, while there were some other misfires, there were some hits, too. Namely, again, the experience itself. Any excuse to have Animal Kingdom open at night is a good excuse, and kudos to Walt Disney World management for not pulling the plug on the whole nighttime closings once it was known that Rivers of Light was going to miss its target debut by several months.

I think this bears emphasizing: Animal Kingdom could be closing at 7 p.m. all summer, but management decided to forge ahead with the later, more expensive closings. We critique a lot of the cost-cutting decisions Disney makes here, so I think it’s only fair to also highlight some of the positives. While the experience has a lot of room for improvement, I’d much rather have the park open late into the evening with hit and miss new entertainment than the status quo of early closings.

In our newest vlog, we cover some things we enjoyed about spending the evening at Animal Kingdom, including :

Now, let’s take a look at the good, bad, and ugly of Animal Kingdom at night…

Streetmosphere Parties

night-animal-kingdom-walt-disney-world-017

One of the best elements is the Discovery Island Carnivale and Harambe Wildlife Parti, which are essentially, dance parties. When I first heard that Animal Kingdom at night would feature dance parties, I shuddered, envisioning the blood-boiling, sexually suggestive pop “music” played at high decibel levels in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland that I can hear from inside Carousel of Progress. (P.S. Get off my lawn.)

Thematic coherence and the eardrums of guests with good taste in music were thankfully spared from such an unfortunate fate, and we received beautiful, thematically appropriate performances at both of these parties. Uptempo (on-theme) music and elaborate costumes inspired by animal life made these dance parties befitting of the Disney name.

With lots of props, great costuming, and an eclectic selection of high-energy entertainers, these troupes are pitch-perfect for Animal Kingdom, and guests of all ages appeared to love the performances. For me, this reinforces the notion that quality wins out, and you don’t have to go for the low-hanging fruit of what’s hot in pop culture to have captivating entertainment.

I would happily invite these dance parties onto my lawn. As a grumpy ole curmudgeon, that’s about the highest praise I can give here.

We recommend seeing these shows early in the evening while lines for everything else start to die down, and the crowds are larger for their performances. A sizable crowd adds to the energy of these parties.

Tree of Life Awakenings

tree-life-awakenings-animal-kingdom-walt-disney-world-015

Here’s another aspect of the good–the really good. The Tree of Life Awakenings are awesome. These brief vignettes during which the animals on the Tree of Life come alive via projections are awesome. This is pure Disney magic, and the experience reminds me a lot of (a technologically more impressive version of) the Kiss Goodnight at Magic Kingdom.

Each Awakening only lasts a few minutes, but they are beautiful, both in story and visuals. It captures the heart and the essence of Animal Kingdom, and we definitely recommend making an effort to see a couple of them. (There’s typically one that occurs shortly after park closing as most guests are exiting from Jungle Book: Alive with Magic).

Kilimanjaro Safaris

night-animal-kingdom-walt-disney-world-018

I’ve lauded the removal of the ‘chasing poachers’ storyline at Kilimanjaro Safaris, calling it an unnecessary pretext. I think this is true during the daytime version, where there’s something special about the safari experience itself. No added layer of storytelling fluff is necessary, because the environments were Imagineered so meticulously to emulate an authentic safari experience.

Unfortunately, the nighttime version of Kilimanjaro Safaris does not stand on its own quite so well or, really, at all. It can barely crawl on its own. We were fortunate enough to see a few animals, including the lions at the peak of their activity, but otherwise, it was a bumpy ride in the dark with little that captured the spirit of exploration the same way the daytime version does.

Part of this was the result of our driver, who provided a quiet, monotone narration that did little to captivate guests. This got me thinking about how much a layer of fluff would really help here in propping up an otherwise lackluster experience. If you’re going to transform Kilimanjaro Safaris to something different at night and you already know that the animals and lighting aren’t going to cooperate, you’ve got to look for other ways to transform it.

I wouldn’t go as far as subverting the experience and turning it into a veritable Jungle Cruise 2.0, but something beyond the animal-gazing experience is necessary. Tinkering with the light, as has purportedly been happening, is not going to cut it. Quick fixes would include adding a soundtrack via the radio music (who doesn’t love Hapa Duniani ?!) another part might be adding some storytelling contrivance that can easily be activated once the sun goes down. Or, maybe they just turn off the lights completely, add a few poking effects in the vehicles, hasty projections, and turn it into “Hauntimanjaro Safaris – Mission: Animal Ghost BREAKOUT!”

As it stands, I’d highly recommend experiencing this as close to official sunset time as possible. It gets dark on the savanna quickly, and if you wait until dusk, you’re going to have a difficult time seeing the “action.”

Jungle Book: Alive with Magic

jungle-book-alive-magic-animal-kingdom-walt-disney-world-014

This might be where you expect me to twist the knife, but I’m not going to do that. Not because I liked the show (it is awful), but because I think it would just be piling on at this point given the number of negative reviews that have already been written.

It’s unfortunate, because this show features a lot of performers, and they are clearly giving it their all. If there is any saving grace to Jungle Book: Alive with Magic, it’s these entertainers who at least breathe some sense of life into it.

On this blog, I hammer on my belief that you should experience attractions and entertainment for yourself rather than deferring to popular sentiment. I’m not sure if I can extend that philosophy to Alive with Magic. Seeing this show requires a decent amount of time and effort, and most people are going to be let down with the quality of the show in light of that investment.

It’s not just a matter of the 20 minutes of your life you’ll never get back from watching Stitch’s Great Escape, as here you either have to commit to a FastPass+ or purchase a dinner package. Neither are ideal options. Alternatively, (and this is what we recommend) you could just show up in standby 15 minutes before the show starts and be seated in non-optimal seats. This option will likely lead to the fewest regrets.

If you have a long vacation, by all means, get a FastPass+ and see it. If your trip is shorter, you might want to think hard about whether it’s a good use of FastPass+ (especially considering that it means you will be limited to 3 FP+ for the entire day since this show is at the end of the night) and your time to see this. Some people may very well like the show (we had a friend with us who did), but I think that won’t be the predominant sentiment.

everest-night-popcorn-lights

There are plenty of other things you can enjoy about Animal Kingdom at night, and here are a few of our recommendations:

  • Towards the end of the night, popular attractions will be near walk-ons, so don’t wait in long lines early in the night for Expedition Everest, Dinosaur, etc.
  • Disney Hollywood Studios’ Star Wars fireworks show is visible over Everest from the Harambe bridge leading through Africa towards Tusker House.
  • Do Kilimanjaro Safaris earlier in the day if you want photos–it’s virtually impossible to take good photos at night, so don’t even bother.
  • We recommend doing a late lunch at Tiffins rather than doing a table service dinner–enjoy the nighttime experience of Animal Kingdom!
  • Stage shows are not running in the evening, so focus on these earlier in the day and do rides at night.
  • Make a point of seeing multiple Tree of Life Awakenings, as they are each unique.
  • If you watch the second Jungle Book: Alive with Magic showing, you should have about 5-10 minutes afterwards to jump in line for Everest before the park closes.

Rivers of Light?

disney-vacation-club-imagination-lounge-epcot-walt-disney-world-012

If you’re planning a Walt Disney World vacation for late summer, fall, winter, or even 2017, you might be anxiously awaiting updates on Rivers of Light, only to hear…crickets.

At this point, no one knows when Rivers of Light will actually debut, or in what form. Guest response has not be positive towards Jungle Book: Alive with Magic (meaning there is no intention of morphing that show from an interim replacement to something permanent). Debuting Rivers of Light as soon as possible remains the goal.

Issues that existed with the mobile barges for Rivers of Light have yet to be resolved. (Obviously, or we’d have heard an official debut date by now.) My speculation is that a solution for these structural problems is not yet known–that it’s a matter of changing things, making tests, and seeing what works.

All of what follows is speculation: I assume that, at this point, there will be an ‘a ha’ moment with a solution or workaround being found, implemented, and Rivers of Light being able to have a debut date. The problem with an ‘a ha’ moment is that it’s not exactly predictable. Such a moment could occur tomorrow, or it could occur in 3 months. Given how much has already been done in terms of testing and adjusting, it would seem that there are significant problems with the barges and how they navigate Discovery River, so it’s not a simple, quick fix.

If it takes longer to find a solution, you have to wonder at what point Disney will decide to simply hold back Rivers of Light until Pandora: World of Avatar is ready to officially open.

Let’s say, hypothetically, that Pandora is going to have its grand opening on April 22, 2017 ( as we are predicting ). Let’s also say that Rivers of Light is good to go in January 2017. What incentive is there to debut it then, when crowds are low and Animal Kingdom could otherwise be closing at an earlier time?

In that scenario, it seems much more plausible to hold back Rivers of Light until March, do a soft run of it for about a month, and then have one extravagant re-launch for Animal Kingdom with both Rivers of Light and Pandora in April 2017. Rivers of Light would make a bigger splash then, during a large scale media event that highlights what’s new aside from Pandora as part of that re-launch.

Again, this is total speculation (and should not be construed as a rumor since it’s supposition on my part), but my prediction is that if we don’t see Rivers of Light debut by Christmas 2016, we won’t see it (officially) debut until Pandora opens.

While I might’ve been wrong about this year being Animal Kingdom’s coming out party, that event has just been delayed, not canceled entirely. You better believe I am counting down the days until we can step foot (on that crazy, space-age fiber optic ground) in Pandora, see Rivers of Light, and experience a fully-fledged nighttime experience at Animal Kingdom. This was just a small taste of what’s to come, and even it is a really enjoyable experience, warts and all.

Does Tree of Life Awakenings occur all year long? I’m planning an October 2018 trip and it doesn’t show any available times.

' src=

For the whole week we are going in November, Animal Kingdom closes at 7:00pm. Does this means the Tree Awakening and Rivers of Light do not happen?? And does that go for all of the parks and their nighttime entertainment?

' src=

Hi Tom – love your blog! My boyfriend and I were at WDW in late April, and we got to experience Rivers of Light, and we were a bit… underwhelmed. The visual effects were great, but we both felt it lacked a storyline – it seemed a bit lackluster if you compare it to Illuminations or Fantasmic. Have you had a chance to see it yet? I was curious about your thoughts on it, and if you had any of the same impressions.

' src=

Any updates on the timing of Pandora. Our trip is 4-21 to 5-3. Would be awesome if it was open by then.

' src=

There’s the *potential* for a soft opening during your trip, but it’s not entirely–or even close to–certain yet. Stay tuned.

' src=

Thank you for your tips. I can’t imagine that the Safari would be good at night — and I would hate to disrupt the animals further by flooding them with lights. Your best line of the article in reference to Alive with Magic, “It’s not just a matter of the 20 minutes of your life you’ll never get back from watching Stitch’s Great Escape …” Love it. Did you ever see the short-lived Legends of Jack Sparrow at Hollywood Studios? Same thing — never get that time back.

' src=

Thank you for your tips at the end of the article – as someone who has never navigated Animal Kingdom at night, these are invaluable to help maximize the experience!

' src=

“Or, maybe they just turn off the lights completely, add a few poking effects in the vehicles, hasty projections, and turn it into “Hauntimanjaro Safaris — Mission: Animal Ghost BREAKOUT!””

This almost made me spit my food out laughing! I’d buy the t-shirt.

The orange monkeys from Fantasmic! YES!

My hubby and I went to AK on our anniversary in June. We were very excited about the Jungle Book show, we (thought we) had a dinner package at Tusker House. It took so long to get our tab from the waitress that we were already running late, but then they said we didn’t have the dinner package. A manager got involved and gave us the tickets, which we were not charged for. By the time we walked across the park there were no seats available and the performance was already under way. We had a great view and a wall to lean on. We thought the show was good and plan to see it again in August. Let me add that we went to see The Jungle Book movie after making our dinner reservations and had really looked forward to this.

' src=

Think it’s possible that the night version of Kilimanjaro will disappear once Pandora and ROL open? Once Pandora and ROL open, park capacity may be big enough to justify Kilimanjaro returning to daytime hours only.

I think that is possible, but if there’s also a huge influx of additional guests, they might still need the capacity. That’s why we’ve seen an expansion of dining in the last couple of years. They are preparing for what is projected to be significant growth when Pandora opens.

' src=

I don’t know Tom, re: ROL. Given the priority you’d expect/think/hope Disney gave to fixing this if it was just a matter of having an aha moment it seems like that would have already happened. I can’t help but think they’ve had to go back to the drawing board and start over from square one.

We’ll probably never know the full story, but it’s hard for me to fathom that they got so close to opening date for ROL without someone saying ‘Uh, guys, this ain’t going to work.’

I have this vision of a meeting with some exec going Capt. Pickard on the imagineers and saying ‘make it so’ and them yelling back ‘Captain, I can not change the laws of physics.’

“I have this vision of a meeting with some exec going Capt. Pickard on the imagineers and saying ‘make it so’ and them yelling back ‘Captain, I can not change the laws of physics.’”

You kid, but I’m pretty sure that’s close to how the conversation went (not with Imagineers, but with the contractor on the barges).

Having to go back to the drawing board is a possibility, but I don’t think it will come to that.

' src=

We were there in early June. Went on the safari around 6:00ish and it was fantastic. Lots and lots of animals out. Our jeep was stuck behind a giraffe for a good five minutes while our driver begged and pleaded with the giraffe to move off the road. I agree that the safari experience really depends on the driver. As the evening progressed we walked on everything and saw Donald by Dinosaur with no wait. It was a great evening. Definitely going to AK after 4:00 was a great way to visit the park. It’s now our plan for next time.

' src=

Thanks for that info. Can you tell us anything about why the Star Wars fireworks are off to the side at Hollywood Studios? The show is so cool but my family couldn’t even see the fireworks because we were in the center! Total fail! A worker who was off that day told us they set them off from a different area now. We thought that there was an error due to weather or something but apparently this is planned.

' src=

Due to the construction on Star Wars/Toy Story, the launch zones that were previously backstage of Hollywood Studios, as well as on top of buildings, can no longer be used. The new launch zone is across World Drive from the Studios. This is why when in DHS you have a view to the side, and why from DAK and DAKL the fireworks are extremely visible.

' src=

Can u see the awakenings from all sides of the Tree of Life?

Nope, only from the front 🙂

' src=

Thanks for this info! I’ll be there in 35 days! I know there is no schedule for the tree of life awakenings and I really don’t want to miss it. Any advice on what time to plan on viewing it?

There is a bit of a schedule. First show starts around 8:45, and the tree lights around every 15-20 minutes after that.

' src=

Spot on post as usual. Some hits, some misses. Interesting how Everest and Kilimanjaro Safari offer completely different experiences at night. Everest in my opinion is a superior version of an already great ride at night while the night time safari is a complete flop.

' src=

Great post, Tom. We are at WDW this week, and we used a fast pass for Jungle Book: Alive With Magic a couple of nights ago. Needless to say, we were underwhelmed. That was the first time I have walked away from a Disney show feeling irritated that I bothered to see it. Our performance was especially weak, as they were noticeably short on performers; two of the barges did not have dancers on them, and for some bizarre reason, they did not move the dancers who were present to the middle barge… Which just the issue even more noticeable! Very disappointing.

Anyway: I’m still holding out hope for an awesome nighttime experience once Pandora and Rivers of Light open! And while we were only able to catch one tree awakening, it was amazing. I’m tempted to go back one more evening before we head back to Indiana just to see if I can catch a few more of them!

' src=

I like hearing your thoughts. We had some friends down there last week and they loved the lighting on the Safari, so perhaps it has been tweaked since you saw it. They are also pretty pro-everything when it comes to Disney… and they still disliked the Jungle Book show.

' src=

Going to DW in September. We were hoping to see a night time show at animal kingdom. We even planned on using a fastpass as we have a 2 yr old and a 1yr old so arent worried about any of the rides with height requirements. I was bummed to get on fastpass 60 days out to see can’t get fastpass to it as it says closed for refurbishment on the fastpass page. Do you know if there will be any night time show at all in september at AK?

My son (13) did this tour with my Mom (65) during our stay at AKL. I didn’t go because there were only 2 spots left at our 60 day time. So book asap. Ben said he would recommend it and so did my Mom. So it’s great for a wide range of ages and is only 1 hour. And it’s all in a safari truck.

This tour was the highlight of the trip for my husband and myself. The night viewers are easy to use and it is really cool to see the animals interacting at night. Our tour guide was AJ and she did a fantastic job explaining the lives of the animals and answering questions. The driver was so great too but unfortunately I forgot her name. We went in December and unfortunately it was too cold for the giraffes to be out. So the tour guide arranged for us to go back stage in the giraffe barn!!! It was the coolest experience ever. They even had baby giraffes in there. It was a small group so we didn't feel over crowded. Everyone got a glue in the dark safari pin at the end as well. I cannot even begin to tell you how worth while this tour is.

We had dinner at the Sanaa restaurant at 5:45 and walked around the Kidani lodge until our 8:15PM check-in at the Sanaa reservation desk. Our guide Kristi greeted us and we all headed to the open air truck to get our night vision devices and start the tour. Laura was the driver and she and Kristi worked very well together getting us so close to the giraffes the we could touch them, but of course we didn't because that's not advised. Watching the zebras, okapi and ostriches feed and just experiencing night in the savanna with animals roaming about was indescribable. These animals are active at night in the cool air and this whole experience was well worth the cost and time.

Great personalized evening safari. We were right up next to the giraffes..... almost could touch them. Wish it was longer

Animal Kingdom at Night: What You Need to Know

Ever since the Animal Kingdom Park opened in 1998, guests could only enjoy the park during the day as it regularly closed at dark. Fortunately, that has now changed! On May 27 th , Animal Kingdom introduced new extended hours and rolled out a variety of new nighttime entertainment and experiences. However, it’s important to note that Animal Kingdom is a different creature at night; and its signature nighttime show, Rivers of Light , and new land, Pandora – The World of AVATAR , haven’t even made their debuts yet. So, if you’re planning a night venture to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park in the near future, here’s what you need to know…

Opt for a Sunset Kilimanjaro Safaris

When Animal Kingdom first announced it was staying open after dark, it also promised a nighttime version of the park’s famous Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction, but with a constant sunset! While it sounds awesome and was highly anticipated, it has been met with criticism since it debuted. Why? The problem is that animals can’t be controlled. If they don’t want to be in view of the safari vehicles, they won’t; and while this is true of the daytime safaris as well, the animals are still often visible. This is not the case at night, even with new lighting effects.

Speaking of lighting, I can say that I was impressed with the constant sunset. While it wasn’t totally realistic, it looked fantastic and the glow and shadows from the effect looked great. I was, however, completely fooled when it came to the artificial moonlight towards the end of the safari, but it still did little to reveal the animals.

Now I’ve heard from other guests and Disney Park regulars that riding the safari around the time of the actual sunset is so much better. While each ride varies, the animals are often very active and visible. So try to experience Kilimanjaro Safaris as soon as you arrive at the park for your evening experience in order to see the animals and have the best ride possible. It’s also much more ideal for photographers who need daylight and for families with kids eager to see the wildlife.

Not Everything is Open at Night

As of right now, not everything Animal Kingdom offers during the day is available during night hours. For instance, Finding Nemo – The Musical and Flights of Wonder hold their last shows before the sun sets, so nighttime guests may not get a chance to enjoy these offerings if they don’t arrive early enough. Fortunately, the popular Festival of the Lion King show offers performances into the evening, but does stop a few hours shy of park closing.

A number of the park’s wildlife trails and exhibits are also closed for the night, such as the Maharajah Jungle Trek in Asia, the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail in Africa, and Rafiki’s Planet Watch . Finally, for those who love meeting and greeting with characters at Animal Kingdom, most character interactions currently end in the afternoon or early evening, except for Mickey and Minnie at the Adventurers Outpost. Personally, I think this will change in the near future.

Note : Animal Kingdom’s Wilderness Explorers also closes at 7:45 P.M.

Low Wait Times for Park Attractions

On May 27 th , when the park kicked off its nighttime hours, I booked a number of FastPass+ reservations in advance thinking that the wait times would be outrageous for this debut night. Halfway through the evening, I checked attraction wait times on the MyDisneyExperience app and found that most of Animal Kingdom’s attractions, with the exception of Kilimanjaro Safaris, hardly had waits at all! This pattern has somewhat continued throughout the month. Perhaps after dark is the new ideal time to take advantage of the park’s headlining attractions?

Skip The Jungle Book – Alive with Magic

Rivers of Light was intended to be the park’s signature nighttime show; but when it was delayed until later this year, Disney realized they needed something to entertain the summer crowds in the meantime. Their answer was The Jungle Book – Alive with Magic which packed in the crowds during its first night on the Discovery River. Sadly, the show hasn’t lived up to expectations and truly does look like a short-term substitute. What I suggest for guests wanting the nighttime Animal Kingdom experience is to skip the show and use that precious park time to ride Animal Kingdom attractions with minimal waits, to take in the Tree of Life projections, and just to explore the park in cooler temperatures than they would ever experience during the day.

There is No Set Schedule for the Tree of Life Awakenings

In addition to promising a nighttime show on the water and the nighttime Kilimanjaro Safaris, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park also promised special projections on its massive icon, the Tree of Life. Disney has been employing projections for sometime now, most noticeably on the Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle for its nightly Celebrate the Magic show. But trust me when I say that Animal Kingdom’s Tree of Life awakenings take projection entertainment to a whole new level and just have to be seen in person!

Animal Kingdom guests should also note that there are four different mini-shows or “awakenings” projected on the Tree of Life, each lasting around three minutes. There’s also no set schedule for these mini-shows either, something I wish I had known before my first visit to Animal Kingdom at night. Also, in between showings, guests should keep their eyes on the tree. At times, an animal carving may spring to life on the Tree of Life via projection, and the effect is stunning!

Ride Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain at Night

Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain is one of my all-time favorite attractions; and several years ago, for special extended park hours or something like that, I had the chance to ride Expedition Everest at night in the dark!

To this day, that nighttime ride is my favorite Expedition Everest experience; and when I first heard that Animal Kingdom would be staying open at night, I couldn’t wait to enter the Forbidden Mountain after dark yet again.

I secured at FastPass+ reservation weeks in advance; but when it was time for my ride, the sun hadn’t quite set just yet. So learn from my mistake and check the time for the sunset if you too would like to experience Expedition Everest in the dark. Still, it was darker than usual when it was time for my ride; and needless to say, I was not disappointed. Expedition Everest just feels faster and scarier at night, and the dark truly compliments and even enhances the overall experience. Even if you have ridden Expedition Everest dozens of times, be sure to experience it in this new way when you visit!

There’s A LOT of New Live Entertainment

Animal Kingdom has always offered a variety of live entertainment, my favorite being the Tam Tam Drummers of Harambe ; but just for the park’s new nighttime hours, Animal Kingdom has introduced a lot of new live entertainment! I’m not kidding either, there’s A LOT and you probably won’t be able see all of the acts in a single visit.

To kick off the night, Animal Kingdom has the Discovery Island Carnivale with its lively music, super colorful costumes, and the invitation to dance along with the performers. In Africa, the new Harambe Wildlife Parti offers a range of acts such as Muziki, the Harambe Village Acrobats, the Karibu Sisters, and the Harambe Soccer Meerkats! Burudika is also offered throughout the night as well.

Creature Comforts is Open Until Park Closing

Creature Comforts , otherwise known as Animal Kingdom’s Starbucks, is conveniently open until park closing. I typically head straight for Creature Comforts to caffeinate myself for the evening ahead when enjoying an evening at Animal Kingdom, but it’s truly a comfort to know that it’s open when heading for the parking lot and bus stops for a late night boost for when someone in your family is begging for a quick snack to take back to the resort room. Creature Comforts is also a prime destination for some of the park’s best cupcakes, which are already packaged to-go. How perfect is that?

If you’re planning to check out Animal Kingdom at night, these are a few things that you need to know to hopefully help you and your family maximize your park time!

Have you experienced Animal Kingdom at night yet? If so, share what you think park guests need to know in the comments!

Does Expedition Everest operate during the Jungle Book show?

It does, and it’s a great time to ride. It was virtually a walk-on during the show.

Just a quick note, it is still light for a while after sunset. If you want to ride Expedition Everest in the dark, you should wait until around Nautical Twilight, which is currently about an hour *after* sunset at AK.

Has there been any indication about the Fall/Winter plans for the evening activities? When this was first announced I thought I read it was going to be a “permanent addition” but when I look ahead to my November/December trip the park hours show AK closing at 5:00 just as in years past? The evening hours seem to stop after the Labor Day weekend. I realize I am asking you to speculate but just wondering if you had heard anything about future hours? Thank you!

Excellent question! The upcoming park hours schedule has me puzzled as well, especially since Rivers of Light is supposed to debut later this year. My best guess is that the park may begin to only offer night hours on certain days of the week in the fall and winter, but perhaps those dates haven’t been scheduled or announced yet. I’m thinking we will hear info on this soon once the summer season gets well underway. Again, great question and thanks for commenting and I hope we will get an official answer from Disney soon!

Savannah – Thank you for your reply. Your thought about the parks only offering night hours on certain days of the week sounds likely to me too. I also thought I may not see a schedule change until Rivers of Light has actually debuted allowing Disney to not commit until it is fully up and running and have some idea of the crowds and popularity? I have also noticed that the HS schedule makes no mention of the fireworks yet for that time as well. So, I will wait patiently and keep watching for updates! Thanks again!

Hi Savannah. We plan to see the Safari on 6/28 around 7:00 PM. We had a FP @ 4:30 for Lion King, but switched it for a 7:10 Safari. Was this wise? Last visit, we got closed out of the Lion King and had to wait for the next show. Projected TP wait times for Safari are low @ 7:00 PM, but shoot up around 8:00 PM. Do you sense that Safari will be getting more crowded in the early evening now?

We got in line on 6/15 at 8:00 PM with FPP for the Safari and were on the vehicle by 8:20. It was the perfect timing to capture the sunset and lots of active animals.

I was glad we had used our other FPP beforehand, as overall lines were extremely short for everything during our evening at AK. We loved it!

So glad you enjoyed your time at Animal Kingdom and that you too took advantage of the short wait times at night! Thanks so much for commenting!

It’s hard to say because the safaris and the animal activity can be unpredictable. Sunset during this time of year occurs around 8:30 PM; but with your 7:10 PM FastPass+ time, you should be aboard your vehicle by 7:30 PM which I would think would still allow you a great experience. If you plan to spend the day at the park, I would suggest catching Festival of the Lion King during the heat of the day; but if not, there is often a show every hour in the afternoon and into the evening. I do think the safari will be become more popular in the early evening hours, but I don’t think people have learned the best times to check it out just yet with Animal Kingdom’s nighttime experiences still in their infancy. Hope this helps and I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Alec John Such, a founding member of Bon Jovi, dies at 70

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals Identity of Miss Cleocatra: Here Is the Celebrity Under the Costume

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 11, Episode 8 of “ The Masked Singer ,” “Girl Group Night,” which aired April 24 on Fox.

Jenifer Lewis spent a year recovering from a devastating 10-foot fall while on safari in Tanzania. It was while she was still in bed, convalescing, that she got a call from “The Masked Singer.” “I still couldn’t walk,” she told Variety . “And my friends encouraged me to get out of bed and go do what I love to do. ‘You’ll be in front of a live audience, you’ll be singing, you’ll be in a mask, but you’ll still be doing what you really love to do, which is to entertain.'”

Popular on Variety

Lewis said the show accommodated her limitations on stage. “They bolted me to the floor in a harness when I sang ‘Stormy Weather,’ and when I sang the En Vogue song, the mic was bolted. You’ll see, I never let go of it because I couldn’t walk. But it did lift my spirit to get up and do ‘The Masked Singer.’ It was the best decision I made.”

Lewis came up with the idea of being a Cleopatra-like character, “because I knew they could carry me out on the stage. They could sit me on the throne, and the muscle men could escort me around.”

But, because she was still in a bit of pain, “I was still on a little morphine. So if you look closely, when I’m on that throne, you’ll see a little nodding off up there,” Lewis said. “I was so stoned walking around!”

Lewis said she has improved greatly in recent months. “I’m doing great,” she said. “People ask me, ‘On a scale of one to 10, how are you doing?’ I’m a nine and a half. I want to tell the kids when you fall, however you fall, get up. Get up. That’s all we got.”

For Miss Cleocatra, Ken Jeong got it right with Jenifer Lewis. Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg named Loretta Devine. Rita Ora guessed Roberta Flack. Robin Thicke went with Loretta Devine as well.

It  was “Girl Groups Night,” and the panel opened by singing “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls.

Jenifer Lewis as Miss Cleocatra joins Kate Flannery (Starfish), Charlie Wilson (Ugly Sweater), DeMarcus Ware (Koala), Colton Underwood (Love Bird), Sisqó (Lizard), Billy Bush (Sir Lion), Joe Bastianich (Spaghetti & Meatballs), Savannah Chrisley (Afghan Hound) and Kevin Hart (Book) as the celebrities unmasked on “The Masked Singer” this season.

Back for Season 11 are host Nick Cannon, alongside panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke, while Rita Ora has joined the desk to fill in for Nicole Scherzinger, who was in London to star on the West End’s “Sunset Boulevard.”

“The Masked Singer” Season 11 features themed episodes including “The Wizard of Oz,” in celebration of the 85th anniversary of the classic film; “Transformers” (marking the brand’s 40th anniversary) and music tributes including “Billy Joel Night” and “Queen Night.” Additional themes include “Girl Groups,” “Soundtrack of My Life,” “TV Theme Night” and “Shower Anthems.”

With sixteen total celebrity singers, including three “wildcards,” Season 11 features new costumes including “Gumball,” “Lizard,” “Ugly Sweater,” “Goldfish,” “Starfish,” “Book,” “Gumball,” “Miss Cleocatra,” “Afghan Hound,” “Beets,” “Poodle Moth,” “Clock,” “Spaghetti & Meatballs,” “Lizard,” “Koala,” “Seal” and “Sir Lion.” According to the show, the Season 11 contestants boast a combined 22 Grammy nominations, 11 platinum albums, 33 Teen Choice nominations, 108 million records sold, 326 film appearances and 1.7 billion Spotify streams.

Next week, we’ll find out which Group B winner faces off against Group A winner Goldfish and Group C’s Poodle Moth and Clock for the quarter finals.

Here were the Group B performances on Wednesday’s Episode 8, “Girl Group Night”:

Song: “Wide Open Spaces,” by the Chicks

Panel guesses: Aaron Taylor Johnson, Derek Hough, Taran Killam

Clue: Delivered by Carnie Wilson, singing “Don’t Cha.” “Don’t you wish you could have starred with Channing Tatum like me?”

Previous song: “If I Only Had a Heart,” by Jack Haley

Previous panel guesses: Chace Crawford, Kevin Jonas, Jamie Dornan

Song: “I’m So Excited,” by the Pointer Sisters

Panel guesses: Brooks and Dunn; Titus Burgess and Alan Cumming; Zach Braff and Donald Faison

Clue: Delivered by Raven-Symoné, singing “Weak.” “We made our audience weak in the knees on Broadway.”

Package voiceover: “Last time, we really brought it home. So the pressure’s on to pay homage to the ladies tonight. Like the best girl groups out there, we both bring our own spice. I was the total ladies man. [And I was the tough guy.] Two guys who couldn’t be any more different. But we didn’t try to outdo each other. Instead, like a good girl group, we teamed up. [It was our organic friendship that made us a delicious duo and kept us on the menus nationwide.] Yeah, we’re still touring, hitting the town. [We’d be so excited to make it to the Group B finale. And tonight is the night that we’re going to make it happen.]”

Previous song: “Home,” by Michael Bublé

Previous panel guesses: Will Arnett and Jason Bateman; K-Ci and Jojo; Steve Martin and Martin Short

Miss Cleocatra

Song: “Free Your Mind,” by En Vogue

Panel guesses: Roberta Flack, Loretta Devine, Jenifer Lewis

Clue: Delivered by Carnie Wilson, singing “Stop! In the Name of Love.” “The Supremes aren’t just on my playlist. They’re a part of my career.”

Package voiceover: “I really caused a storm last time. I was the cat’s meow! I’m thrilled to be here tonight to champion fierce girl groups. You know I had my own gang of great women who shaped me. Starting with my own mother. She was a maid, so I didn’t have to be. But the best gift I ever got from her was her work ethic. It made me the hardest hustler in Tinseltown. Now, all the brightest starst look to me, including Michelle Obama and her mother. I’m most proud of the little princesses who see me as their queen. I want them to know if they want to be supreme, free your mind and work harder than anyone else. And thanks Ma, for showing me that!”

Previous song: “Stormy Weather,” by Etta James

Previous panel guesses: Taraji P. Henson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine

Seal (WILDCARD)

Song: “Hold On,” by Wilson Phillips

Panel guesses: Haley Joel Osment, Corey Feldman, Sean Astin

Clue: Delivered by Raven-Symoné, singing “Bo$$.” “Well, you know, it’s easy to be confident when you have a boss like Steven Spielberg.”

Last season’s performers included Ne-Yo as Cow, John Schneider as Donut, Macy Gray as Sea Queen and Janel Parrish as Gazelle join John Oates as Anteater, Keyshia Cole as Candelabra, Sebastian Bach as Tiki, Ginuwine as Husky, Ashley Parker Angel as S’more, Metta World Peace as Cuddle Monster, Luann de Lesseps as Hibiscus, Tyler Posey as Hawk, Billie Jean King as Royal Hen, Michael Rapaport as Pickle, Tom Sandoval as Diver, Anthony Anderson as Rubber Ducky and one-time special guest Demi Lovato as Anonymouse.

Fox Alternative Entertainment is behind “The Masked Singer,” which is exec produced by showrunner James Breen, Craig Plestis, and Nick Cannon. The series is based on the South Korean format created by Mun Hwa Broadcasting Corp.
