11 Things to Know About the Cruise Norwegian App

Are you about to sail on a Norwegian cruise? Then you’re going to want to download the Cruise Norwegian app. The program provides all sorts of helpful information to plan and enjoy your cruise — all from the convenience of your phone.

We recently reviewed the app on a cruise, putting it through the paces to see exactly how you can use it and what all you can do with the program on the ship (and even before you board).

If you are about to take a Norwegian cruise, here’s a full review of all the things you should know about the app for your trip.

Norwegian cruise app

The Cruise Norwegian App Is Available on Every Ship

Since first being introduced, the app has continued to roll out among the ships in Norwegian’s fleet. The cruise line recently announced that the app is now available across all ships. So whether you are sailing on the Norwegian Bliss (the line’s newest ship) or Norwegian Spirit (it’s oldest), the app will be available to help plan and reference during your cruise. Best of all, the app is free.

It’s Available For Both Android and Apple

One of the biggest hangups with some apps is that they might only be available for Android or the iPhone. In the case of the Norwegian app, it’s available for both devices . If you are running Android on your phone, it requires version 4.1 or greater. Apple devices need to have iOS of 9.0 or higher.

You Can Use the App to Book Reservations or Shore Excursions

norwegian cruise lines app

Once you’ve downloaded and logged into the app, then you can start to get a feel of how useful it is. From the program you can find information on dining, entertainment and shore excursions. Find a restaurant you like? You can create a reservation right from the app.

It’s the same thing with shore excursions. Instead of having to book with the staff the ship, you can read more about each adventure offered, including prices. If you find the one you want, you can book it right through your phone; no waiting in line required.

The Cruise Norwegian App Lets You Check-In Online

Checking in online before your cruise can save you lots of time. And while you can do it from your computer, the app also lets you check-in beforehand. You can get your boarding assignment, know when to arrive at the pier and even access your “E-docs” for boarding right from the phone — similar to boarding a plane.

This keeps you from having to print out a stack of boarding papers. Just bring your ID and your boarding docs on the phone and you’re ready to go!

Use the Program to Track Your Spending

Account balance on Norwegian app

One of the most convenient features you’ll find is that you can track your onboard spending through the app. Whether it’s buying a drink, a massage, a meal, or a souvenir, anything you spend on the ship will be logged to your onboard account.

Right from the app — anywhere on the ship — you can see exactly how much you’ve spent. It’s nice to be able to budget on your vacation and also not be surprised by an unexpected bill amount at the end of the cruise.

This tool is especially useful if you have kids traveling with you and you want to keep track of their spending on the cruise.

The Daily Schedule Keeps You On Top of Everything on the Ship

norwegian cruise lines app

Not sure what’s happening on the ship right now? That’s not a problem if you have the Cruise Norwegian app. For each day on the ship there is a full schedule with everything happening on the ship.

You can quickly browse through and see exactly when and where an event is taking place. You can also mark them with the “heart” icon to make it easy to know exactly what you want to attend.

There Is a Phone & Messaging Tool (It Costs $9.95)

While the app is free, there is one section of the program that costs extra — calls and messaging. As an added feature, you can call or message other people on the ship using the app, for $9.95 per phone. Note that this doesn’t allow you to call or message home. So if you wanted to use the app to call and check on things back on land, that wouldn’t be available. It’s only for contacting people on the ship.

Update: According to the app’s information, you can use it to call home, but at a rate of $0.79 per minute.

Deck Plans Are Incredibly Handy

norwegian cruise lines app

If you’ve never taken a cruise, you should know that it takes at least a day or two until you can get your bearings on where things are on the ship. With so many decks and few walkways that go the entire length of the ship, it can be confusing to know exactly how to get from Point A to Point B.

That’s why the deck plans included on the Norwegian app are so helpful. You can pull up every deck and see exactly what’s there. It’s an easy way to never get lost again.

You Don’t Have to Purchase Wi-Fi to Use The App

There’s little argument that wi-fi on a Norwegian cruise is expensive. It can cost up to $35 per day . The good news is that you don’t need to pay for wi-fi in order to use the app. While the app connects to the ship’s internet system, it’s free to use. The only part of the program that costs money is the call and messaging feature.

Instead, when you get on the ship you will put your phone in airplane mode and then follow the instructions on the app to connect to the ship’s wi-fi. It will allow you to connect via the app free of charge.

Use the App to Learn More About Restaurants and Bars

Not sure where to eat on the ship? The app has you covered. With more than a dozen restaurants on many ships… not including bars… it can be overwhelming. You’ll find profiles of each within the app, along with information about their costs, location, and more.

It’s a handy way to figure out where you want to eat or drink without having to go bar-hopping all around the ship.

Get Answers to the Most Common Questions

If you’re new to cruising, then there are likely to be a number of questions about your cruise. Everything from how to connect to the wi-fi to what time dinner is on the ship. The Cruise Norwegian app has a full list of “Help” topics like these with full answers.

While it may not be the most exciting thing, it’s super helpful when you have a question and know exactly where to find the answer.

Have more questions about the Cruise Norwegian app? Let us know in the comments below and we’ll do our best to answer them.

We uploaded the app years ago and have used it, however, it is in my husbands name and I can’t get my own personal app. Seems like we struggled to get my phone to connect with our party when we tried on one cruise. How do I get the app to add me separately?

Can I download the NCL app without giving my credit card information?

Yes, of course.

The app is horrible pre-cruise. Would like to see my times at port and when I hit the itinerary link one f two things happen. I’m forced to go to the web that opens nothing, or I’m forced to look at excursions. Arrival times are posted but not departure times. Please get it together. This is my first NCL cruise and I hope it’s not my last!!!

When do you purchase the phone and messaging app? Can you do it before you leave or must you be on the ship in order to purchase it.?

I would like to use the app but it will not load to my phone. My wife has the same phone and can use the app. There does not seem to be any help with the app

So, if we are on a 15 night cruise is the $9.95 plan per trip or per day?

Per trip, not per day!

Does the 9.95 messenger thing work acceptably now? Last cruise 3 years ago it was terrible and the internet cafe helper said it rarely worked for him

That I’m not sure about!

Does the 2022 NCL App have the actual daily menu’s for MDR, Specialty, Haven & theme night for buffet, so while eating breakfast you can decide what’s for lunch & dinner! Might you also find it on the TV in Cabin! TYIA!

Does the phone or person you want message also need to have the app and pay for the service?

Does everyone on the reservation, need to create a separate account?

Can you book spa passes or treatments on the app? Will the app let you make dinner reservations in the main dinning areas? Traveling with 10 most nights are booked in the specialty dining but would be nice to book one of the main dining rooms a night or two

Yes you can make some reservations, but you might not need to make a reservation for non-specialty restaurants. If you can’t make them from the app, it’s really simple to make spa reservations from your cabin phone or just login to your account before your cruise.

I see that you said it costs per phone, so does that mean for 2 people in a stateroom that both people need to create a separate ncl account (to be used on each phone)? Or do you login to the same account on both phones?

While we haven’t tried it personally with multiple people, it’s our understanding that the chat feature is on a per phone basis. Here’s what the app says:

“Yes, once you purchase a Phone and Messenger package, you can make an unlimited number of calls and messages to other guests with the package for one flat rate. In addition you can call staterooms, and to a variety of shipboard guest service extensions.”

Does Norwegian Cruise Line take your photos if you pay to use the Messaging service for $9.98?

Not sure what you are asking.

What You Need To Know About Norwegian’s New Cruise App

Picture of Doug Parker

  • December 4, 2017

Upping their technological game, Norwegian Cruise Line today announced an all-new version of their app. The redesigned Cruise Norwegian app’s main purpose is the best one imaginable: To help eliminate stress as you plan (not to mention enjoy) your vacation.

How The Cruise App Helps Before You Even Board!

“Whether they’re 60 days from their sail date or in the middle of their cruise, the Cruise Norwegian app [allows for] seamless, anytime access to a myriad of onboard offerings, services and activities,” said Andy Stuart, president and chief executive officer for the line. “Once on board, the Cruise Norwegian app will allow guests to continue customizing their ideal cruise experience and view or manage their existing account information, allowing them to maximize their time and spend it on the things they enjoy the most.”

And let’s face it: Nobody lists “having to stand in line at the guest services desk” as one of the things they enjoy most. In fact, it probably doesn’t even crack the top 20.

Anthem of the Seas vs. Norwegian Breakaway

The Cruise Norwegian app is, at the end of the day, an update of their current iConcierge app. At the moment, the Cruise Norwegian app is only available on the Norwegian Sky . It next will be rolled out when the line’s newest ship, the Norwegian Bliss , joins the fleet this summer. And by the end of 2018, the app is expected to be available to all passengers sailing with Norwegian.

What You Can Do With The Norwegian App Now!

While the app may not yet be available for most current passengers, it can still be downloaded and accessed as a way to help plan your next vacation. If you already have an account with Norwegian Cruise Line, you can use the same log-in information to, after downloading the app gain access. Immediately upon signing in, you’ll see your current Latitudes reward level (and can easily find out what perks come with that level), as well as any future cruises you. Users will be able to read about and book shore excursions, make dinner reservations and more. Like with the iConcierge app, passengers will be able to pay a one-time (per cruise) fee of $9.95 and call or message others on the ship who have also accessed the program. Furthermore, guests will be able to make outbound calls via the app for 79 cents per minute.

Will you be downloading the free app? Which function do you think you’ll find most useful?

NCL app for texting and messaging

Cool Cruiser

We are a large group spread across multiple rooms. We have the 250 mins internet package already. I heard that the NCL app allows you  to communicate with other members of your party. Is that free ? Or is that part of the 250 mins ? Or do I need to pay an additional charge ?

It's $10/device, does not require the internet package, works off the ship's local wifi.

A little clarification from our recent trip.  We had the 250 minute internet plan.  Put your phone on airplane mode once you board, turn on the wireless, and login to the app.  That uses a free WiFi available on the ship and doesn't consume any of your internet time.  The app is useful for things like making dinner reservations, or seeing what activities are going on around the ship, etc.

In addition, if you're sending iMessages with an iPhone, you can use them without any charge -- whether or not you're on the ship.  My hubby and I were able to text each other without using any of our minutes this way, and could also text my daughter who was at home dealing with a sick baby.  This ONLY work with iPhones, not phones that send regular text messages.

We also had trouble trying to sending message to phones that didn't use iMessage.  Even though we had the wireless, they simply wouldn't send if it wasn't an iMessage.  Don't know if that would have changed if we'd paid the $10 device charge, but since we didn't need to use it to communicate on the other ship, we never paid that.

We were able to imessage on RCCl Anthem on & off the ship to home as well. What ship were you on NCL?

We will be on Joy in Oct. This would be good.

On the Joy!  Since we were in Alaska there were a few places, where we were in narrow mountainous areas and the WiFi didn't work at all that we couldn't iMessage, but that was the exception and not the rule.

Thank you, we go to Victoria then San Fran to LA

Just curious.  With the iPhone what phone service do you have that was working to message ?

Also were you able to connect to the internet ?  In port or away?

How recent was your cruise because the "free" iMessage loop hole was closed some time ago.....  you now need an internet package to use iMessage.

The NCL application is indepent of any internet package and every phone is required to purchase the texting / calling piece at a cost of approx $10 to communicate with each other EVEN if you have an internet package.. the free part is for shipboard information only.

I have Sprint -- and it worked better than I expected. On the ship I was in airplane mode though, so not using my service.  We did have internet available on the ship because we had the internet package.  In port it was spotty.  Ketchikan I had it sitting in the middle of the water while we were going out to halibut fish.  Juneau was a little spottier, and Skagway we had it right in town -- and then picked up service in Carcross too.

Sailed on 6/15, got back 6/22/19.  This was very recent.

Yup, that's a "hole" that was left open (intentionally or not I'm not sure) on that ship and others using the RoyalIQ app.  There is a transition in progress to a new app, the Royal app, which actually has free messaging within the app for now.  That free messaging may be open so they can work out the bugs, then they'd put it behind a "paywall".

Follow up question - should I have every individual in the room register on the NCL app/site ? Or can the same profile be accessed from two phones ?

That is what I would expect...... ute_fan experience is not the norm

I have a slightly different question- I purchased the 'social media package' on Escape. Says most social media, such as facebook, instagram, etc, and most messaging apps. What do they mean by messaging apps? I'm using a Samsung Galaxy, my daughter a Google phone. Will we be able to text people at home while on this wifi package? It's not the 250 minutes, but unlimited social media. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

Big difference between "messenger" and "messaging"...  Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram (DM messengers) are messenger apps.  I personally love WhatsApp and those at home just have to install it and you can chat with the Social Media Package. It does not allow text messages

Stranded cruise passengers in Spain race to catch up with their ship

norwegian cruise lines app

By Maureen O’Hare, CNN

(CNN) — A month after eight Norwegian Cruise Line passengers were stranded in Africa when their ship left without them because they were late getting back, a US couple – ages 84 and 81 – were also left behind by the cruise line in Spain.

Richard and Claudene Gordon of Salt Lake City, Utah, were on a Mediterranean cruise aboard Norwegian Viva with family and friends and looking forward to celebrating Richard’s 85th birthday later this week.

While the ship was docked in Motril, Spain, on Monday, the pair took an independent excursion by themselves to the historic city of Granada, not organized by the cruise line. On their return, their bus was delayed for an hour by a rain storm, Richard Gordon told CNN by phone.

“I am a very experienced traveler and have probably been on as many as 30 cruises during my lifetime,” Gordon said. “Never before have we ever missed catching a ship on time at a port. So we are not someone who abuses the system.”

The pair missed the ship’s all-aboard time of 5.30 p.m. local time, for a sail away at approximately 6 p.m. Gordon said that at around 5.45 p.m. he spoke to a relative on board who raised the alarm that they were nearby and running late, but the relative was told by Norwegian Cruise Line staff that as the ship needed to sail on time, nothing could be done.

According to the Gordons, they arrived at the dock by taxi at 6.10 p.m., while the ship sailed away with Claudene’s medication, Richard’s eyeglasses and both their spare hearing aid batteries and phone chargers on board.

“Our cruise began in Lisbon and we departed from Lisbon about one and a half hours after the scheduled departure at 4:00 p.m.,” Gordon told CNN. “Then the next night or two, at least a half-hour late from the dock, so it is clear that they do not always leave on the exact moment scheduled.”

“They looked around and they looked around and no one was there,” Marilee Barker, the couple’s Utah-based daughter, told CNN by phone. They got a taxi to the police station where “the policeman helped them call back to the dock. And they said, ‘there’s nothing we can do.’ ”

The couple says they received no further assistance from Norwegian Cruise Line at that point, from the ship or on land.

No medication, no hearing aid batteries

“Luckily my dad has traveled, but he’s still 85,” Barker said. As the Norwegian Viva wouldn’t be docking again until Tuesday on the island of Ibiza, “they took a bus up to Granada and found a cute, cheap little B&B.”

Meanwhile, Barker says she and her husband were up to 3 a.m. finding flights and a hotel, eventually getting them on a plane to Palma de Mallorca, where their ship would be docking at 8 a.m. local time on Wednesday May 1.

Claudene Gordon texted her daughter late Tuesday afternoon Spanish time to say that Norwegian Cruise Line had made contact with them for the first time since the incident and had offered them a taxi from their Palma hotel in the morning to reunite them with their boat.

“We really received the royal treatment today,” Gordon told CNN after being reunited with the ship on Wednesday morning, two days they disembarked at Montril.

“They picked us up at the hotel in a beautiful black BMW limousine to take us to the ship. There we were met by the head of ship services who escorted us inside the ship to meet the general manager of the ship, then they escorted us to breakfast, then they escorted us to our cabin.

“We simply told them that we were abandoned at the dock with no one to meet us or tell us where to go, and they said they have already complained about the harbor master who was supposed to take care of things for them. But of course the ship had not contacted us directly for two days so that doesn’t speak so well for them.”

Norwegian Cruise Line said it disputed the time of the couple’s arrival at the pier. “The two guests who went ashore independently arrived at the pier approximately an hour late and missed the all-aboard time of 5:30 p.m. local time, for a sail away at approximately 6:00 p.m.,” a spokesperson said via email.

“A cruise ship follows a set itinerary with designated arrival and departure times. Itineraries are carefully coordinated and planned out well in advance of each voyage to ensure that all of our guests have the experience they are expecting,” they said. While there is a small window of time where late guests can be accommodated, they added, the Gordons arrived outside of this.

“After several attempts to contact these guests with the phone numbers provided, as well as trying to phone their emergency contact, we were unable to speak to them directly. However, we worked closely with the local port agents to make arrangements for the guests to rejoin the vessel.”

The spokesperson said that, prior to the hotel pickup on Wednesday morning, the cruise line had coordinated an airport pick-up for the Gordons at Palma de Mallorca the evening before but were still unable to contact the couple by phone.

In the similar incident last month, eight passengers were late getting back to their Norwegian Cruise Line ship on the African island nation of São Tomé on March 27. They then struggled for days to catch up with their ship as it made its way up the western coast of Africa.

In that case, Norwegian emphasized that the delayed guests were on a private tour that was not organized by the cruise line.

This Norwegian Cruise sailing takes you on a bucket list adventure: What it's like aboard

F or Kylie Herd, an Australian passenger on Norwegian Dawn’s Feb. 25 southern Africa itinerary, cruising has been the best way to check places off her bucket list.

“I just go with whatever cruise line has the itinerary that I want to do at the time that I’m available. It tends to be Norwegian, and when I saw that Norwegian had all these African cruises, I just thought, ‘I’m going to spend summer in Africa,’ because it’s an amazing itinerary,” she told USA TODAY.

When it comes to cruising, most Americans probably think of bopping around the Caribbean or checking out the wilds of Alaska if they’re feeling especially adventurous, but that’s really just scratching the surface. Cruise lines are increasingly offering diverse itineraries including expedition cruises to remote parts of the globe and introductory sailings to help travelers explore countries and regions they might never visit otherwise.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Madagascar was the real draw for months of consecutive cruises on the Dawn for Herd.

“I’ve been trying to go to Madagascar for years. I always wanted to go there way before the movies ever came out. It’s one of those places that’s really difficult to get to,” she said. “When I saw Madagascar on a cruise itinerary I was like, ‘I have to do it.’ ”

Although the Feb. 25 sailing had to skip Madagascar for logistical reasons after a delay departing Mauritius, Herd said that she was able to visit the country earlier on her trip and that it was a real highlight.

Norwegian’s Africa itineraries had various changes and missed ports throughout the season. Passenger contracts give cruise lines some leeway to alter itineraries on short notice for reasons including weather or conditions on the ground that prevent ships from reaching or being accommodated safely in a scheduled port. Such changes can be especially common in regions prone to political unrest or that lack sophisticated port facilities.

Even so, Herd said she understood why passengers who missed out would be frustrated, but she encouraged her fellow travelers to keep an eye on the positive. “I understand the disappointment. I was disappointed, too, but we’re still having a great time.”

The Feb. 25 cruise still stopped at Reunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, which has an active volcano, as well as ports in South Africa where travelers could spot local wildlife.

Safari from a cruise

Norwegian Dawn stopped at four ports in South Africa, three of which offered safari experiences as shore excursions.

▶ From Richard’s Bay, passengers could visit the iSimangasilo Wetland Park , home to elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, zebras and other classic African big game. The park is about an hour and a half drive from the port, and Norwegian’s shore excursion included two game drives, snorkeling and a traditional South African braai, or barbecue.

Just as cruise itineraries can sometimes be subject to last-minute changes, safaris are at the whim of wild animals. Sightings are not guaranteed, but patience and vigilance are often rewarded.

▶ In Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Norwegian Dawn’s passengers could visit Addo Elephant National Park, also about an hour and a half drive from the port.

As the name suggests, Addo is home to a huge and docile population of more than 600 elephants. These animals often congregate around watering holes accessible from well-worn safari tracks.

Even after a strong rainfall the night before the excursion, which allowed elephants to retreat into the bush and temporarily lessen their reliance on overtaxed wells, dozens of the creatures greeted visitors coming from the ship for two-hour game drives.

▶ In Mossel Bay, passengers could also access private game reserves, which often have a higher concentration of wildlife roaming free but can include animals that are not directly indigenous to the area.

Cape Town and the winelands

There’s more to Africa than safaris, and Cape Town is an especially good place to experience metropolitan life and other kinds of outdoor activities on the continent.

South Africa’s legislative capital offers excellent hiking, a great foodie culture, beautiful (if slightly chilly) Atlantic beaches, penguins and more.

For travelers willing to explore beyond the city, South Africa’s wine country is close at hand in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and many vineyards offer tastings and meal experiences. One Norwegian excursion took passengers to the Blaauwklippen wine estate in Stellenbosch, which is best known for its Zinfandel.

Is an Africa cruise worth it?

From a financial standpoint, a cruise around Africa can be an excellent way to explore. For American travelers, however, flights to and from the ship are often more expensive than the cruise itself.

For example, a 13-day Norwegian itinerary that begins in Cape Town on Dec. 7 and ends in Mauritius on Dec. 20 has prices that start at $899 per person for an inside stateroom, but flights can be well over $1,000 round trip. The current cheapest itinerary from Detroit, for example, is a 42-hour slog on multiple airlines via Montreal and Dubai to Cape Town. The return trip is a bit shorter, at 31 hours, also via Dubai and Montreal. That routing would cost $1,694 per person in economy as of March 18, according to Google Flights.

Logistically speaking, though, it can be much easier to book a cruise and rely on the line’s shore excursions to expand one's horizons than to coordinate one's own safari.

“With multiple diverse ports of call within one coastal continental area, our Africa voyages provide our guests the opportunity to explore lush rainforests or volcanoes, experience captivating wildlife tours, learn about the rich culture on the South African coastline, indulge in Cape Town’s incredible wine regions, and so much more,” Brian Gilroy, vice president of revenue management and itinerary planning for Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement to USA TODAY.

The one thing to keep in mind is that the African cruise market is less mature than the Caribbean – at many ports, there just aren’t comparable facilities to handle big ships. That doesn’t mean the cruises can’t or don’t happen, just that sometimes the operation is a little less fluid than the well-oiled Miami machine.

“Our 11- and 12-day cruises start and end in either Cape Town, South Africa, or Port Louis, Mauritius, and include an overnight stay in one of those magnificent cities, giving our guests the chance to fully explore what these regions offer. The variety of adventures our guests can experience in these destinations are endless, which makes for a truly unforgettable cruise experience," Gilroy said.

Travelers may be more likely to encounter a hiccup on their Africa cruise, but that’s all part of traveling to a new and exciting place. A missed port or an extra sea day can be a great time time to take stock, focus on the highlights, enjoy the experience of unlocking a new destination, and maybe take another sip of the wine your onboard sommelier recommended.

Just take a page out of Herd the Australian’s book. Despite some schedule changes, she said, “I’ve loved every single thing.”

I like an app that’s easy to follow

Of course we are curious about things and we all want to see what’s happening on our cruise. Using an app that’s easy for one to follow and use. It takes time to get use to an app to learn from an app. Time is precious & so is your money. This app is easy to use to find out what’s happening on your cruise. From excursions to shopping on board. To eating out to shopping. Norwegian has done it again. Easy , helpful & delightful 🙂
So much better than the old website booking option. Really well designed

Poor design, unreliable content

The app is extremely unintuitive compared with other cruise lines, lacking basic functionality to book experiences and missing key information you’d expect like restaurant opening times. However the biggest issue by far is the repeatedly incorrect schedule that can severely impact your holiday experience by providing wrong times and locations causing guests to miss out. Based on the numerous inconveniences we encountered on the Norwegian Bliss because of the app, I wouldn’t sail with NCL again.

How to play norwegian cruise (nclh) ahead of q1 earnings.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. NCLH is scheduled to report first-quarter 2024 results on May 1, before the opening bell. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for earnings is pegged at 12 cents per share. It reported an adjusted loss per share of 30 cents a year ago. The consensus mark for revenues is pegged at $2.24 billion, implying a 22.7% jump from the year-ago level. Robust demand for its Norwegian Cruise Line brand, record-high bookings and higher pricing levels are likely to have aided the company’s performance.  Our model predicts passenger ticket revenues, and onboard and other revenues to improve 25.8% and 4.1%, respectively, from the year-ago levels to $1,520.4 million and $638.2 million.  We expect occupancy to be 104.8%. The cruise industry giant's performance outlook appears promising, but investors must weigh potential risks against anticipated rewards before making investment decisions.

Booking & Fleet Expansion Drive Optimism

NCLH continues to benefit from robust booking. It is witnessing healthy demand across all markets, brands and products. Management intends to focus on strategic marketing efforts to drive demand and high-value bookings in the upcoming periods. For 2024, it expects healthy net yield growth of approximately 5.4% on a constant currency basis on the back of improved occupancy and pricing strength. Norwegian Cruise is constantly looking to expand its fleet size, which is currently at 32. In 2023, the company added three new world-class ships to its fleet, one for each of its three award-winning brands. It introduced Oceania Cruises Vista in May, Norwegian Viva in August and Regent Seven Seas Grandeur in November. It plans to introduce five more ships through 2028. For the Oceania Cruises brand, NCLH has one Allura Class Ships to be delivered in 2025. For the Norwegian brand, it has four Prima Class Ships on order, with scheduled delivery dates from 2025 through 2028. These additions are expected to increase its total berths to approximately 82,500.

High Costs Pose Challenges

Despite the positive outlook, Norwegian Cruise faces challenges associated with high operating expenses, particularly payroll, fuel and transportation costs. The company remains cautious of increased expenses, particularly in terms of fuel and capacity additions. Total cruise operating expenses for the first quarter of 2024 are projected to rise 7.7% from the year-ago level.

Wrapping Up

While Norwegian Cruise’s long-term prospects appear promising amid solid booking trends and new ship additions, investors are advised to exercise caution. Despite a notable 30.9% increase in its stock price over the past year, concerns over high operating costs suggest the need for prudence. As the travel industry continues its recovery, NCLH's performance outlook remains positive, but potential investors may prefer to await a more opportune entry point.
