Nusa Penida Tour: The Perfect day trip from Bali

Nusa Penida Tour: The Perfect day trip from Bali

Nusa Penida is the little gem of Bali. Penida island is part of the Nusa Islands , is the biggest of the 3 but until now the least developed. By visiting Nusa Penida expect white-sand beaches with silky blue water, 200-meter high coastal cliffs drop, and yet untouched nature. It is recommended to either visit the island by a one-day Nusa Penida Tour or a 3-day Nusa Penida trip .

Things to see on a Nusa Penida Tour

During a Nusa Penida day tour, you can either explore the west or east coast of Penida Island. West is more popular since it is closer to the harbor. East is at least as beautiful and has fewer tourists. If you prefer to see both sides, it is better to do a 3-day Nusa Penida Trip .

This Nusa Penida travel guide explains both tour types so it will be easier for you to choose from.

West Coast Nusa Penida Tour

The west coast of Penida island has beautiful sights like Angel’s Billabong and Kelingking Beach . Combine this with Crystal Bay, Peguyangan waterfall and Broken Beach to have a day filled with incredible viewpoints and jaw-dropping nature. It’s also possible to book a day tour leaving from Bali in advance.

Tip: It’s also a great option to switch Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong for Tembeling Natural Pool .

Kelingking beach

Kelingking beach is 100% sure the most spectacular place on Nusa Penida. White sand and a piece of land shaped like a dinosaur head. The view from the top is incredible but be prepared if you want to hike down to the beach. This hike down is a 45-minute incredibly steep path.

Angel’s Billabong & Broken Beach

Nusa Penida is full of spectacular shaped locations. Broken Beach is one of them. A 45-minute bumpy ride from KelingKing takes you to this spectacular gate.

A 150-meter walk from Broken Beach is a natural infinity pool where you can dip in and enjoy the clearest water you’ve ever swam in.

Here are all your hotel options in Nusa Penida.

Peguyangan waterfall or Snorkeling with Manta Rays

A 150-meter high iron blue stairs down towards a tiny waterfall, which gives you the most scenic areas and a real test to your fear of heights. Around Nusa Penida are great Manta-Ray snorkeling and diving points. To do this, you would have to stay a little longer or book a day tour dedicated to swimming with Manta Rays.

Tembeling Forest & Beach

For a more unique experience on Nusa Penida, we recommend you to visit Tembeling Natural Pool, forest and beach . Modify your west Nusa Penida tour by removing one of the other things to do on Nusa Penida .

East Coast Nusa Penida Tour

The east coast is a little more untouched. You will visit Atuh and Diamond Beach , Thousand Islands viewpoint, Rumah Pohon Treehouse and you can either choose between the underground temple Giri Putri or Teletubbies Hill.

Two picture-perfect beaches located very near each other. To get to those beaches you will have to decline via a stair which is quite challenging.

Price of a Nusa Penida tour

The price of a tour totally depends on what you like to see and the comfort you prefer on Penida Island. A day trip usually takes from 8 AM until 16 PM. Spend one night on Nusa Penida if you like to see both the east and west coast in a Nusa Penida tour.

nusa penida trip guide Thousand Islands

Private tour price A private Nusa Penida Tour with driver, car, boat, hotel transfers, and entrance fees usually starts from 750.000 IDR (~50 USD). Split the costs with two to four people and it will be cheaper than a shared van.

The Best Nusa Penida Day-Trip from Bali

Nusa Penida is the biggest of the three Nusa Islands (and most epic), located just off from mainland Bali. BUT did you know it’s only a 30-minute boat trip from the Sanur Harbor in Bali so it’s VERY easy to reach quickly for a Nusa Penida day trip if you are staying in Canggu, Seminyak, or Kuta. There are so many awesome things to do on Nusa Penida Island and there are two main different Nusa Penida day trip tours I suggest you look at.

The Best Nusa Penida Day-Trips from Bali

In this blog post, I’m going to detail the two most popular Nusa Penida day trips from Bali. The first option is the Manta Ray Snorkel Tour . It’s honestly the most amazing experience to swim with gentle Giant Manta Rays. The tour takes you from Bali to Penida to snorkel with mantas but also to snorkel at other locations where you will find beautiful corals and even spot turtles. The second tour is the BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour , which basically takes you to all of the most iconic viewpoints and beaches on Nusa Penida in one day.

BEST NUSA PENIDA DAY TOURS

If you are staying in Bali.. take a day trip on a speedboat to explore the highlights of Nusa Penida. It takes just 35 minutes to get from Bali to Nusa Penida by speed boat. Yep, in just one day you can snorkel with Manta rays and visit lots of the best beaches and viewpoints.

Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour

Manta Ray Nusa Penida Tour (from Bali): Snorkeling with Manta Rays is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the best wildlife encounters I’ve had in my life. The Manta Rays are majestic and very friendly. With a wingspan of 5m, these gentle giants cruise around you while you snorkel amongst them. The Nusa Penida Manta Ray Snorkel Tour includes pick up and drop off from your hotel in Bali and all transport and tickets included.

Nusa Penida Highlights Tour

Nusa Penida Highlights Tour : Get picked-up from your Bali hotel, take a 35-minute fast boat to Nusa Penida and then visit the most popular viewpoints, beaches and snorkel spots on the island. This small Nusa Penida Highlights Tour group tour is the most highly reviewed day trip for Nusa Penida Island. You’ll visit all the most popular spots and can request certain viewpoints on your itinerary. Places you will visit are sites like the ones listed below:

Angel’s Billabong

  • Kelingking T-Rex Beach

Broken Beach

  • Rumah Pohon Treehouse
  • Snorkeling at Crystal Bay
  • Thousand Island Viewpoint

Okay, that was a the brief overview of the two tours I will detail in this article. Below, I’m going to go into the exact details of what each tour involves as I have personally done them both!

Nusa Penida Day Trip – Snorkeling with Manta Rays

This is a tour you simply cannot afford to pass on. I know for some people they are on a budget in Bali or they prefer not to book tours but I guarantee you, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to float around with Giant Manta Rays.

  • Swim with the massive reef manta rays of Nusa Penida
  • Visit Crystal Bay, Atuh Beach, Diamond Beach
  • Snorkel in scenic spots around Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan
  • Enjoy a delicious beachside lunch overlooking a white sand beach
  • Explore some of the most diverse reefs on the planet

The tour includes lunch, and several other snorkeling spots near Manta Point where you can see turtles, corals and tropical fish. You’ll also cruise through a few beaches on top of the Manta Point snorkel.

As soon as we plunged into the water, we found ourselves looking directly at a huge Manta Ray, one of the most impressive beings of the sea. It was completely surprising, I assumed we’d be hanging around waiting for them. More than five of these Manta Rays were making repeated circuits in the bay, delighting the cluster of snorkelers. Unlike turtles or fish that tend to swim away at the presence of humans, the Manta Rays were consistently interactive, circling back time and again. They would often approach you directly and then quickly swerve off to one side at the very last moment.

You can use this calendar below to see the availability of tours. It’s important to book this tour in advance during high season as it can be a very popular activity on Nusa Penida and they try and limit the number of boats in the water.

Gamat Bay Snorkeling

As part of the Manta Ray Snorkeling tour , you will get to snorkel at Gamat Bay aswell. We jumped off the boat, and immediately realized the water at Gamat Bay is much colder than at Manta Point and Crystal Bay. I’m not sure why that is. The second thing we noticed was the incredible coral structures and rock formations beneath the surface. The depth ranged from a few meters closer to shore all the way down to perfect free-diving depth of 5-20 meters.

Our guide told us this is where you can see a turtle if you are lucky. We looked long and hard and finally, we found a turtle who let us chill near him for ten minutes as he went about his business. The water clarity at Gamat was perfect!

The BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour is the most convenient way to see Nusa Penida in just one day. There are three set spots on the itinerary but you can customize the schedule and spots to visit by discussing with the tour guide and tour company, which is quite important. You may have some bucketvlist items that you want to guarantee that you see so just discuss that in advance and they will make it happen!

Below I’m going to detail each of the spots on the itinerary and/or those spots you can add to the itinerary by customizing it!

Atuh Beach is one of the most picturesque and beautiful beaches on Nusa Penida, an island off the southeastern coast of Bali, Indonesia. It’s s a stunning white sand beach surrounded by the huge cliffs and remarkable rock formations. An arch sits directly out from the shore while several islets string off in the distance.

Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach, found on the far eastern edge of Nusa Penida Island in Indonesia, is famous for its incredible natural scenery. The beach showcases an extraordinary setting marked by clean white sands, transparent turquoise waters, and high cliffs. The beach’s distinct rock structures, which look like shining diamonds, give this beach its unique name. A carved staircase descending the cliffs allows entry to the beach, presenting stunning wide-angle views on the way down.

But the key feature here is the rock shaped like a diamond in the shallow waters. After all, I think this diamond-like rock is what gives the beach its name.

Nusa Penida Treehouse (Rumah Pohon)

The Tree House (Rumah Pohon) on  Nusa Penida  has become something of an iconic spot. It is perched up on the mountain at Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) viewpoint near Atuh Beach.

It is part of the Thousand Island viewpoint area costing only 10,000 rupiah to park and enter, which is less than $1 USD. The best part about this treehouse is that it is actually a house and you can rent it out for pretty cheap considering how popular this spot has become and how insane the view is.

Teletubbies Hill

Teletubbies Hill is a great spot to understand just how diverse the landscapes are on Nusa Penida and it was incredibly interesting flying the drone here scoping out all the different contours, valleys and canyons in this region.

Angel’s Billabong is one of the magical spots to visit on Nusa Penida. A crystal clear tide pool cascades into the ocean on the east coast of Nusa Penida. Angel’s Billabong is an enchanting natural wonder located on the island of Nusa Penida, Bali, Indonesia. This unique rock formation, nestled on the island’s southwestern coast, forms a tranquil natural infinity pool that overlooks the vast Indian Ocean. During low tide, the pool’s crystal clear water provides a safe and serene spot for swimming, revealing a mesmerizing underwater world.

Broken Beach is an incredible little cove on Nusa Penida island. The highlight of the cove and the reason it is called Broken Beach is due to the archway that wraps around the bay allowing water to flow in and out from the ocean. Broken Beach is also one of the spots on the  Ultimate Nusa Penida Day Trip Tour from Bali .

The arch at Broken Beach has been formed over many, many years and is now a true spectacle. From above the cove appears almost circular and closed in, however, at eye level the arch is quite high.

Kelingking Beach

The Instagram famous coastal cliffscape, which truly does look like a T-rex doesn’t disappoint. I still remember the moment I laid eyes on Kelingking Beach. I watched the crystal clear water slowly form into a wave before crashing below us, in what seemed like slow motion.

Nusa Penida has so many amazing views making it hard to pick ‘the best one’. But when the cliffs form in the shape of a Tyrannosaurus Rex at Kelingking Beach it is bound to be a crowd favorite. Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida is one of the MOST epic spots in all of Indonesia and worth voyaging out to visit from Bali.

Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay is probably the most popular beach on Nusa Penida for a number of reasons. It is the best sunset beach, facing directly west. This alone makes it a winner for people trying to have a sunset beer and watch the sun go down.

It’s also the jump-off spot for snorkel tours and is only a 30-minute drive from the main port, Toyapakeh. Most importantly, unlike many of the crazy beaches on Penida, you can snorkel and swim with relaxing conditions.

TOP 3 PLACES TO STAY ON NUSA PENIDA

I’ve written a massive, detailed guide about the Best Places To Stay on Nusa Penida …. BUT If you just want me three favorites right now, here they are!

a pool with lounge chairs and a thatched roof.

  • My TOP Pick: Atalaya Villas – Bungalow Style, Beautiful Palm Trees, Great Location.
  • Beach Bungalow: Santen Bungalows – Stay on the beach, Best Value for Money
  • Luxury: Nay Palad Hideaway – Oceanfront, Beach Access, Beautiful Pool

How to get to the Nusa Islands

There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:

  • Book your ticket:   Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go . You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
  • Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook .
  • Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.

Nusa Penida Tour – Everything You Should Know Before You Go

Just 45 minutes from Bali by boat, Nusa Penida has beautiful views, stunning landscapes, and one of the most gorgeous beaches we’ve ever seen. If you’re thinking about doing a Nusa Penida tour , this post covers everything you need to know before booking.

What’s in our guide to a Nusa Penida tour?

If you know anything about Stephen and me, you’ll know that we hardly ever recommend tours. We prefer to travel independently, staying away from the tourist crowds and seeing things at our own pace.

But the spectacularly beautiful Nusa Penida Island, not far from the south shores of Bali, is a tricky place to travel independently.

For a start, there is little public transport available, and you can’t even hire an ojek (motorbike with driver) without a lot of hassle. Even taxis are hard to come by.

Lots of tourists rent motorbikes when they get to Nusa Penida. If that’s your plan, read the section below about driving on the island before you do it!

Most people see the main sights of the island on a guided tour. You can choose to:

  • Get to Nusa Penida yourself, spend a few nights on the island, and book your tour while you’re there.
  • Take a one day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali, squeezing everything into about 10 hours, depending on traffic.

We did the first option, but the tour is basically the same either way.

If you want to see the incredible sights on Nusa Penida, read on to discover…

What you Need to Know to Plan Your Nusa Penida Tour

Here’s what you’ll see on your Nusa Penida tour. Watch the video and then use the post to plan your trip!

Should you choose a West Nusa or East Nusa tour?

West nusa penida tour.

The west side of the island is the more popular one — and rightly so. It takes you to visit four scenic spots, including the most perfect beach we’ve ever seen!

kelingkin beach nusa penida

This is the tour we chose. It goes to:

  • Angel’s Billabong . A natural tidal pool, swimmable at low tide.
  • Broken Beach . An inaccessible beach with an impressive stone archway.
  • Kelingking Beach . The most beautiful beach on earth?
  • Crystal Bay . A great beach for swimming and sunbathing.

East Nusa Penida Tour

If you can’t stand crowds, you might want to opt for the east side of the island, where fewer tourists go.

The East Nusa Penida Tour goes to:

  • Atuh. A simply gorgeous Nusa Penida beach.
  • Raja Lima. A viewpoint that’s perfect for Instagram.
  • Gili Putri Cave. A Balinese Hindu cave temple.
  • Teletubbies Hills. Green rolling hills named for their resemblance to the Teletubbies’ home.

Sights and Highlights of the West Nusa Penida Tour

Angel’s billabong, nusa penida.

After a juddery hour on the road, driving in a long line of almost identical four-wheel-drive SUVs, we arrived at Angel’s Billabong. The parking lot was jammed. Was this tour going to be a terrible mistake?

busy parking lot near angel's billabong nusa penida

As we walked along the cement trail to the viewpoints, we weren’t feeling much better about our choice. Every space along the cliff held a girl in a bikini top striking adorable poses while her boyfriend took pictures. Actually, that’s not quite true. Only the Western girls were inappropriately dressed!

Side note: Yes, I know I shouldn’t judge people based on their choice of clothing, but wearing next to nothing in a relatively conservative country is just not cool. Would it kill you to show some respect by throwing on a beach cover-up?

We pushed our way through the crowds for our own photos and selfies and finally climbed down to the Billabong. Though the waves were crashing into the pool and churning back out to see, one guy ventured out near the edge.

man swimming in angel's billabong with huge waves crashing

The crowd gasped as an especially large wave yanked him off his feet and threatened to drag him out to sea. He managed to regain his footing and retreated back to safety.

Angel’s Billabong is only safe for a swim during low tide and when the waves are small. If your guide says to get out of the water, get out of the water.

Broken Beach, Nusa Penida

Once we were done at Angel’s Billabong, our guide, Madé, walked us a short way down the trail to Broken Beach.

The actual beach, being at the bottom of a steep cliff, is inaccessible from the top. The only activity here is to admire the stone archway leading into the beach and take more photos for Instagram!

If you walk across the archway, you’ll get the best view of the beach. When we were there, sadly, there was a dead dog washed up on shore.

You get used to this kind of contrast when you travel in countries like Indonesia. Good and bad often come hand-in-hand, all becoming part of your travel experience.

Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida

At first, we thought that Kelingking Beach was just another pretty viewpoint, where we’d snap a few pictures and move onto the next thing. Then, we noticed that there were people down on the beach, hundreds of feet below where we stood.

This is where our Nusa Penida tour took a turn towards the incredible.

Kelingking Beach is best described with this picture.

Kelingking beach from above

It is a perfect stretch of golden sand in a perfectly protected bay. Looking down (way down!) at the beach from the cliffs above is a dizzying experience.

When Madé, our tour guide, said “You can go down”, I didn’t believe it. How could we possibly get from here, way in the sky, to there, down at the sea?

As it turns out, there is a trail, if it can be called that.

It dips down off the plateau and onto the ridge that juts out into the sea. At the beginning, it is fairly steep and precarious, with low fences made of branches lining each side.

steep trail down to kelingking beach

The second half of the trail is steeper, in worse repair, more crowded, and even more terrifying. If you choose to go down, you’ll need nerves of steel and arms and legs to match.

steeper trail down to kelingking beach

As we slowly scrambled our way down, sweaty tourists on their way up assured us it was worth it. Starting to feel breathless and dizzy from the extreme height, I wasn’t so sure. If Stephen hadn’t been there egging me on, I would have turned around after 5 minutes.

But I’m so glad I didn’t!

Kelingking is the most beautiful beach we’ve ever sunk our toes into.

Only a small percentage of the tourists up top ever make it down to the beach. The climb makes it feel all the more special — like you’re in a secret club of crazy brave people.

tourists in bikinis and swimsuits on beautiful kelingking beach

After playing in the crashing waves for a while, we sat on the beach and absorbed the views.

Though we loved the beach, I have to admit I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t be able to handle the climb back up! I resigned myself to being stranded for the rest of my life on the stunning beach. But, as the tide came in, leaving only a tiny bit of beach exposed, I realized I would have to leave with everyone else.

My worry was all for nothing. Going up was much easier than coming down! Plus, the people in front of us were so slow that I had plenty of time to rest and catch my breath.

Crystal Bay, Nusa Penida

After the sweaty, dusty climb out of Kelingking Beach, we considered skipping Crystal Bay and heading back early. But, we had visited there four years ago when we were on Nusa Penida and really wanted to see how much it had changed.

man climbing a tree root in crystal bay nusa penida

Another 40-minute drive took us to the familiar beach.

In 2014, there were only two small drink stalls and a small handful of people on the beach. Now, it is lined with little restaurants, beach chairs, and people soaking up the sun.

By the time we arrived, many of the day trippers and boat trippers had already left, so it was busy but not overcrowded.

Sinking into the crystal blue water and washing off the accumulated grit, sunscreen, and sweat from our day tour on Nusa Penida was the best feeling in the world. Crystal Bay made the perfect end to a tour that, if not perfect, was well worth the time and money.

How much does a Nusa Penida tour cost?

We were already on the island when we decided to do a tour of Nusa Penida. Before we booked, I emailed four of the main Nusa Penida tour companies for pricing and details.

Two of them never replied and the two that did offered me the same tour at significantly different prices.

This is typical in Indonesia, where pricing is often based on getting you to pay as much as possible, rather than offering the same price to everyone.

  • Penida Tours was the most expensive at 1.35 million IDR (94 USD) per person.
  • Discover Nusa Penida offered us the same tour at 1.5 million IDR (104 USD) for two people.

Instead of going with either of these companies, we asked our hotel to arrange the tour. They use a local tour company called Sampalan Trans Company. Our Nusa Penida tour cost us 700K IDR (50 USD) for a car and driver for a full day. We arranged the tour at around 8pm the night before we wanted to go.

What is included on a tour?

Our tour included:

  • Car and driver for a full day
  • Transportation to Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, Kelingking Beach, Crystal Bay
  • All entry fees and parking fees were included

The more expensive tours also include:

  • Lunch at a restaurant (value 110K IDR / 8 USD for two people)
  • English-speaking guide (our guide only spoke a little English)

Should you do a Nusa Penida day tour from Bali?

If you’re going to do a day trip to Nusa Penida, you’ll have to book everything in Bali or before you leave home. This greatly simplifies the trip, but will also cost you more.

A Nusa Penida day trip from Bali is busy, but you’ll just be able to squeeze in all the Nusa Penida must sees!

crowds looking over angel's billagong

Most of the Nusa Penida tour companies offer the exact same things, with varying prices.

The only major difference can be in the quality of fast boat you get to take. It’s important to travel with a reliable company, since the fast boats can often be late or have mechanical problems — and the safety levels can also vary!

Expect to pay around 100 USD per person for the full day with everything included.

If you like to book ahead, this day tour from Bali includes everything I cover in this post and has excellent reviews.

This tour costs a little less but it doesn’t have any reviews yet!

You can also do a 2-day tour from Bali that includes Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. This tour includes and overnight stay on Lembongan, plus snorkelling on both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. More Nusa Penida Tours →

What should you bring on a Nusa Penida tour?

  • Bathing suit & towel – you can swim at Kelingking and Crystal Bay
  • Beach cover up – to be respectful of the Indonesian culture
  • Suncreen – most of the day you’ll be in direct sunlight
  • Lots of water – it’s easy to get dehydrated on this dry island
  • Shoes other than flip-flops – the Kelingking climb is much easier in proper shoes
  • Camera – to capture the best views in the world
  • A small backpack – don’t bring a big beach bag or purse, as you’ll need your hands free for Kelingking

Things You Should Know Before You go to Nusa Penida

1. the roads are insanely lousy..

Except for a few nicely paved stretches, the roads on Nusa Penida are indescribably bad. Roads that were originally meant for a few local villagers on motorbikes are now packed with scores of SUVs every day.

In most places, the asphalt has worn away to infrequent chunks, which are connected by rocky, sandy, potholes. Even the good parts of road are narrow, winding, and crowded, making the driving hair-raising either way. It makes for a very bumpy ride.

line of tour vans on nusa penida

2. Avoid renting a motorbike on Nusa Penida.

When you first get to Nusa Penida, you might be fooled by the perfectly paved beach road into thinking that driving a motorbike there will be easy. But inland, the roads transform into pot-holed messes, with sandy rocks, huge potholes, steep hills, and little or no asphalt. Unless you’re an excellent motorbike driver, I wouldn’t even try it.

It might be all part of the adventure — or it could be a great way to earn a trip to the hospital.

If you want to know more about staying safe on a motorbike, read our complete guide to renting a scooter in Bali .

3. Everything is farther than it looks on the map.

Even though the sights look close together, don’t let that fool you. It takes about an hour to get between each stop. You’ll spend a good part of the day in the car, shaking and rattling your way from one destination to the next. If you’re prone to car sickness, take your nausea meds!

traffic jam on nusa penida

4. Nusa Penida is not the deserted paradise it once was.

If you’ve heard how secluded and tranquil Nusa Penida is, you’ll be in for a shock! The four destinations on the West Nusa Penida Tour are as crowded as the Mona Lisa on a holiday weekend. There are bikini-clad tourists everywhere, all jostling for that perfect Instagram shot.

At least that is what it was like in early July. If you visit in low season, you might have a better experience.

tourists waiting to get an instagram shot on nusa penida

5. The views will actually take your breath away.

Despite these setbacks, we did come away from the day thinking “that was great!” We love observing and interating with people from all different cultures. The landscapes are incredible and Kelingking Beach is an experience we’ll never forget.

6. You should definitely stay a few nights on Nusa Penida.

Unless you have time to stay for a few days on Nusa Penida, I would hesitate to recommend coming here at all. The great appeal of the island is the slow pace of life, away from the Aussie surfer dudes and ultra-spiritual yogis you find on Bali.

Great Places to Stay on Nusa Penida

We loved the beautiful Namaste bungalows , which is where we stayed on our 2014 trip to Nusa Penida. It’s about halfway between the fast boat dock at Tojapakeh and Crystal Bay.

namaste bungalow nusa penida

Just down the road from Namaste is Bintang Bungalows , where our good friends just stayed. They said it was great!

We also really enjoyed our villa at Petak Cottage on the north side of the island. It is walking distance to Penida Espresso, where they make delicious smoothie bowls. It also gave us an amazing view over Mount Agung as it was erupting!

With hassle-free pick-up from your hotel in Bali, return boat transfers from Bali to Nusa Penida, a hearty lunch, and an English-speaking guide.

The tour goes a little something like this :

  • 6:00 am hotel pick-up in Bali
  • 7:30 am check-in at Sanur Beach Port
  • The fast boat departs Sanur at 8:30 am
  • The boat arrives at 9:15 am on Nusa Penida Island
  • A full day of activities
  • Depart Nusa Penida around 4:00 pm
  • Arrive back at your hotel in Bali at 6:00 pm

PENIDA TOUR – DO IT YOURSELF

For those of you that plan to spend a few days on Nusa Penida Island, I have put together the perfect 3 Day Nusa Penida Itinerary which includes all of the spots on the tours mentioned above, plus more!

DIY TOUR – DAY 1

Here is an overview for Day 1 of your DIY Penida Tour:

  • Crystal Bay
  • KelingKing Beach

CRYSTAL BAY

Crystal Bay Nusa Penida is a palm tree haven and an awesome snorkeling location on the west coastline of Nusa Penida Island.

Crystal Bay is one of the best beaches to explore and the perfect spot to begin your DIY Tour!

The drive towards Crystal Bay is an experience in itself, passing through local villages and palm tree lined roads, eventually coming to a dead end on the beachfront.

There is a number of beach shack cafes, traditional temples, a coconut palm tree forest, and colorful umbrellas along the shoreline at Crystal Bay, all of which overlook a gorgeous beach cove and a nearby rock island.

Just offshore, there is a colorful reef system beneath the surface of Crystal Bay Nusa Penida, a very popular spot for snorkeling with all sorts of fish, turtles, and other sea critters.

ANGEL’S BILLABONG

Angel’s Billabong is one of Nusa Penida’s most popular attractions. This natural infinity pool is framed by rock cliffs and hangs out over the ocean and it’s a must-see location on your DIY Tour!

Angels Billabong can be found on the far most western tip of Nusa Penida’s coastline.

When you arrive at Angel’s Billabong there is a parking lot on the cliffs you will be asked to pay a parking fee of 10,000 IDR.

There are a number of viewpoints at Angel’s Billabong, my personal favorite was down in the infinity pool itself. The water is clear as crystal and the temperature of the water is just right.

Due to its popularity, the best time to visit Angel’s Billabong is early morning to avoid crowds.

BROKEN BEACH

Broken Beach is one of many awesome locations on the island and it is not to be missed on your DIY Tour!

Featuring a natural archway that stretches over turquoise waters, it’s easy to see how it got its name Broken Beach.

Although you can’t go swimming at Broken Beach, it is such an unreal setting in itself.

You can take a panoramic walk all the way around the cliffs and discover several different viewpoints offering incredible views of Broken Beach.

Broken Beach Nusa Penida has become a very popular spot for tourists and locals alike, so if you want to have this awesome location to yourself and avoid the crowds I recommend visiting in the early hours of the morning.

KELING KING BEACH

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to and it’s the best location for sunset to finish off Day 1 of your DIY Tour.

Kelingking Beach has quickly become the biggest tourist attraction on the island thanks to Instagram and for a good reason, I mean just look at this view!

Keling King Beach, also known as Kelingking Secret Point, is located on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

The reason why Kelingking Beach is such a popular location is that the cliffs form the shape of a T-Rex.

The head of the T-Rex can be seen on the left of the bay and the body and tail wrap around to the right.

Access to the beach is possible but explore at your own risk. There are stairs and railings made out of timber that lead down the spine of Kelingking to the beach, though don’t completely rely on this and take your time when descending down to the shoreline.

Kelingking Beach also boasts multiple viewpoints around the edge of the cliffs, offering spectacular views up and down the coastline of Nusa Penida.

DIY TOUR – DAY 2

Here is an overview for Day 2 of your DIY Penida Tour:

  • Rumah Pohon Treehouse
  • Goa Giri Putri Cave

Atuh Beach is hands-down one of the most beautiful beaches on Nusa Penida Island, featuring a large cove with crystalline waters, golden sands, and a coconut palm forest.

Atuh Beach is located on the far most eastern point of Nusa Penida Island. From the main town of Toya Pakeh, it’s approximately a 45-minute drive to reach Atuh Beach.

Pantai Atuh Beach can be accessed from either the left-hand side or the right-hand side of the cliffs via the concrete steps that are cut into the side of the mountain.

The entrance fee you will have to pay to visit Atuh Beach is 10,000 IDR.

It’s the perfect spot to go for a swim to cool off and beach bum under one of many straw umbrellas that line the shoreline.

There is also a couple of small beach cafes selling fresh Indonesian cuisine, cold beers, and fresh coconuts.

You could easily spend a couple of hours down on Atuh Beach and not get bored.

DIAMOND BEACH

Diamond Beach Nusa Penida features a glistening white sand beach surrounded by verdant cliffs and turquoise water.

Diamond Beach Penida is located on the far most eastern point of  Nusa Penida Island .

When you arrive at the car park you will have to pay a small entrance fee of 10,000 IDR before making your way down the stairs to the beach.

There are two beach areas at Diamond Beach, one has vivid green mossy rocks and tidal rock pools but unfortunately quite of bit of trash was washed up on the sand here.

The other area of Diamond Beach boasts glistening white sand, coconut palm trees, small caves, and calm waters which is the perfect spot for swimming.

A small warung resides down on Diamond Beach Bali where you can purchase cold refreshments and local dishes such as mie goreng and nasi goreng for as little as $3 to $5.

RUMAH POHON TREE HOUSE

Rumah Pohon Tree House can be found on the far eastern tip of the island and it’s one of the best places to visit in Nusa Penida!

At the jump-off point, there’s a small ticket office where you will have to pay 5,000 IDR for the entrance ticket to Rumah Pohon Tree House.

The hike down the ridge takes no more than five or ten minutes to the first viewpoint that overlooks the bay known as Thousand Islands (Pulau Seribu).

Once you are satisfied with marveling at Thousand Island viewpoint, continue the adventure further down the ridge and you will see the Nusa Penida Treehouse on your left-hand side.

If you want to get that perfect Instagram photo of the Nusa Penida Treehouse you can stand on the hill on the right-hand side of the track to capture the best angle.

Don’t end your adventure here, hike for another two minutes past the treehouse to yet another awesome viewpoint of the cliffs and beaches!

TELETUBBIES HILL

Bukit Teletubbies (Teletubbies Hill) is best known for its lush green rolling hills and incredible viewpoints that overlook the entire Nusa Penida Island.

The best way to explore Bukit Teletubbies (Teletubbies Hill) is on foot. Take a short hike to get a different perspective of this incredible landscape from nearby peaks.

When you arrive, you’ll see rolling fields of green and rounded peaks that give Bukit Teletubbies Hill its name.

On a clear day, you can see the neighboring island of Lombok and the almighty  Mount Rinjani , the second-largest volcano in Indonesia.

In the valleys between Teletubbies Hill are terraced fields of food crops and random clusters of coconut palm trees.

I recommend flying a drone camera here to capture Bukit Teletubbies from above.

GOA GIRI PUTRI CAVE

The Goa Giri Putri Cave is one of Nusa Penida’s most underrated tourist spots but not to be missed on your DIY tour around the island.

Pura Goa Giri Putri cave temple is located on the northeastern tip of Nusa Penida Island.

Take the winding staircase midway up the mountain and you’ll be greeted by a man that will bless you with some holy water to the forehead before heading into the cave.

The entrance fee is by donation, so something around 20,000 IDR will be acceptable.

Pura Goa Giri Putri cave is an impressive 300 meters long and 15 meters tall.

Follow the pathway to the end of Goa Giri Putri cave to a viewpoint of a small village in the lush green mountainside.

You can exit the cave here or head back the same way you came to the entrance.

DIY TOUR – DAY 3

Here is an overview for Day 3 of your DIY Penida Tour:

  • Manta Point Snorkeling
  • Peguyangan Blue Stairs & Waterfall

MANTA POINT SNORKELING

Snorkeling at Manta Point Nusa Penida is one of the most epic experiences to be had on the island.

The majority of the manta point snorkeling tours operate out of Toya Pakeh Bay on a daily basis and the best time to go is early in the morning around 7:00 am.

You can head down to one of the many tourist offices in Toya Pakeh to organize your snorkeling trip to Manta Point.

The cost of a snorkeling tour is around 200,000 IDR and I recommend booking the day before to secure your spot on the boat.

The tour includes all snorkeling equipment and it will stop at 3 different snorkeling sites – Manta Point, Toya Pakeh Wall, and Crystal Bay.

The tour starts between 7:00 am – 8:00 am and finishes around 12:00 pm.

These majestic creatures are absolutely incredible! They glide effortlessly through the ocean and are really friendly to swim with.

The manta rays at Manta Point can be quite intimidating to begin with due to their body size of up to 5 meters, though you will soon realize they are harmless, humble giants.

Snorkeling at Manta Point is the best way to begin the 3rd day of your DIY Tour!

BANAH CLIFF VIEWPOINT

Banah Cliff Nusa is one of the best viewpoints along the southwest coastline of Nusa Penida Island.

Banah Cliff is not quite as popular as Kelingking Beach , though it’s equally as impressive in my opinion.

There are not just not one but two incredible viewpoints at Banah Cliff.

At the jump-off point to the right is the panoramic view and sunset point and to the left is the official Banah Cliff.

The panoramic viewpoint at Banah Cliff Nusa Penida faces west and offers extreme views of surrounding cliffs, perched high above the ocean.

On a clear day, you can actually see the tail of the T-Rex at Kelingking Beach.

Be very careful when taking photos at Banah Cliff as there is no safety barrier to protect you from falling hundreds of feet to the ground. Know your limits.

The other viewpoint at Banah Cliff faces east and offers an awesome viewpoint of an arched rock island just off the coastline. Again, please watch your step along these rocky cliffs.

TEMBELING BEACH & LAGOONS

Tembeling is one of my favorite spots to visit on Nusa Penida Island.

Featuring a number of cool things to see including pristine white sand beaches, tropical rainforests, natural lagoons, hidden caves, and cliff-jumping spots.

Tembeling Beach and Lagoons are located on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

See below for 5 awesome things that you can see and do at Tembeling Beach;

  • Swim in the blue lagoon
  • Cliff jumping at blue lagoon
  • Secret Beach and Caves
  • Jacuzzi pool

PEGUYANGAN WATERFALL

Last but not least on your 3-Day DIY Tour, the ultimate adventure awaits at Peguyangan Waterfall and the Instafamous Blue Stairs.

This location is off the beaten path and it takes a little longer to get to, though it is an experience not to be missed during your visit.

At the jump-off point for Peguyanngan Waterfall, you will have to pay a small parking fee of 5,000 IDR.

A sarong is also required to be worn as there is a sacred temple at the bottom of the cliffs right next to Peguyangan Waterfall.

If you don’t have a towel or sarong to wear, they can be rented from the parking attendant for an additional 10,000 IDR.

There are 750 blue stairs that are impressively constructed into the side of the cliff giving access to Peguyangan Waterfall.

It’s a good workout hiking down and then back up again that’s for sure!

There are several viewpoints that make for great photo opportunities as you make your way down to Peguyangan Waterfall.

After a 20-minute hike down the blue stairs, you’ll arrive at the sacred water temple that has 4 waterspouts.

The waterfall itself is not your common 50-meter meter waterfall, like those you will find in  Bali , but rather a waterspout between a crack in a rock where crystal clear water flows out into tiered rock pools and into the ocean.

GETTING AROUND NUSA PENIDA ISLAND

Nusa Penida is quite a large island and it can take up to one hour to get from one side of the island to the other. The best means of transport on the island is on a scooter.

The roads on Nusa Penida Island are not very well maintained so please be aware of this and take it slow on the loose gravel roads.

Be sure to have travel insurance and wear a helmet as an extra precaution.

There are a number of scooter rental shops dotted along the beachfront at Toya Pakeh harbor that will be able to sort you out with some wheels when you arrive on the island.

Alternatively, most accommodations will help you to organize a scooter rental for the time you plan to spend on Nusa Penida Island.

You can expect to pay around 70,000 IDR per day for a Nusa Penida scooter rental with a full tank of gas.

The Bali to Nusa Penida route: What’s the best way to get there?

how to get from Bali to Nusa Penida

As Nusa Penida doesn’t have an airport, the only way to get to the smaller island from Bali is by boat. You have a few different types of boats to choose from for your trip, including fast boats and ferries, both of which offer multiple departure times each day.

Ferries to Nusa Penida : If you decide to go by ferry, which is the more affordable option, your best bet is to book a ticket with 12Go Ferries . However, you should keep in mind that some of these ferries won’t go directly from Bali to Nusa Penida and instead first make a stop in Nusa Lembongan.

Fast boats to Nusa Penida : Fast boats or speedboats take you directly from Bali to Nusa Penida and are the more popular option among tourists. Although these boats cost more, you’ll get to your destination much faster and you’ll enjoy a much more comfortable voyage. Some of the best fast boat operators include Blue Water Express and Penidago among others.

Which ports do you depart from/arrive at?

fast boats in Sanur

The main port of embarkation is Sanur Harbor, but it is also possible to reach Nusa Penida from Padangbai . Both ports are quite busy, with a lot of noise, chaos and harbor traffic, so make sure that you arrive at least 30 minutes before your boat’s departure time so you can find your boat.

Nusa Penida has four arrival ports, namely Toyapakeh, Buyuk, Sampalan — where the fast boats disembark — and the ferry port in Sampalan. Sampalan is centrally located, with most of the island’s main attractions being nearby. Unlike Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida has a proper pier which makes for easy disembarkation.

Hotel transfers to ports

Most fast boat operators allow you to upgrade your package to include hotel transfers, which is a popular option for many travelers. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Bali and when you reach Nusa Penida, you’ll enjoy a transfer to your accommodation on that side. This makes for convenient travel and is well worth the additional cost.

Guided tours to Nusa Penida from Bali

Another option is to book a guided Nusa Penida day trip from Bali. This way, an expert guide will handle your hotel transfers, boat tickets and travel itinerary. All you need to do is be ready and waiting in your hotel lobby at the scheduled pickup time and everything else is taken care of, allowing you to truly relax and enjoy Nusa Penida Island to the fullest.

Time on the move: How long is the journey to Nusa Penida from Bali?

The time it takes to get from Bali to Nusa Penida depends on the type of boat you choose for your journey. Another factor that may affect the time it takes to reach the smaller island is the weather conditions on the day, as rough seas and heavy rain may result in a slower journey.

With that being said, the two islands are less than 30 kilometers away from each other, so no matter which boat option you choose or the weather conditions on the day of your trip, you can expect a travel time of under 1.5 hours.

Fast boats : The quickest way to get from Bali to Nusa Penida is to take a fast boat from Sanur. The direct journey should only take around 30 minutes and you’ll enjoy comfortable seating alongside incredible views of the surrounding islands.

Ferries : Your other option is to take a ferry from Sanur to Nusa Penida, which should take roughly 45 minutes depending on the ferry option you choose. You could also take a slow boat to Nusa Lembongan and then take a local boat to Penida, but this would take you well over an hour.

Which is quickest? Taking the fast boat is definitely the recommended option. Not only is it quicker and easier than the ferry, but it is more comfortable and the price difference between the two options is also not too significant.

Budgeting the boat ride: How much should you expect to pay for a trip from Bali to Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida tours price

Boat rides between Bali and Nusa Penida are relatively affordable, with ferry tickets costing between US$8 and US$10 per person and fast boat tickets costing approximately US$20 per person.

Tickets with hotel transfers

Packages inclusive of hotel transfers on both sides typically cost around US$30 per person. However, the cost of these packages may fluctuate depending on the location of your accommodation in Bali and how many people are in your group.

Private speedboats

If you’re looking for a luxury option, you could always hire a private speedboat with a skipper for the day. This would eliminate the need to navigate public transport and you could choose your own departure time. However, you can expect to pay at easy US$300 for this type of service.

Should you book in advance?

While you can buy your boat tickets at the onsite ticket offices on the day of your trip, it is best that you secure your tickets online ahead of time. This way, you won’t have to wait in the long lines and you’ll actually enjoy slightly cheaper rates than if you were to buy onsite. Furthermore, boats can fill up very quickly during high season and booking in advance will ensure you get tickets for your preferred travel dates.

Remember to read reviews online ahead of time and book your tickets through a safe and trustworthy company.

If you’re looking to visit the island with a local guide, there are plenty of Nusa Penida day tours from Bali to choose from. The advantage of going on a tour is that your guide will take care of all your travel arrangements and ensure that you see the very best of what the island has to offer.

You can opt for a tour that provides you with a general overview of the island’s top attractions or choose an excursion that focuses on snorkeling and provides you with the opportunity to swim with manta rays and sea turtles.

How much do tours cost?

General tours typically cost between US$40 and US$60 for group excursions, where you’ll get the chance to meet other travelers from around the world. Private excursions, such as the Nusa Penida All-Inclusive Day Trip, typically cost around US$80 per person depending on the number of participants.

Tours that focus specifically on snorkeling, such as the Nusa Penida Manta Ray Experience, usually cost around US$80 for a group trip that’s inclusive of snorkeling gear. Private snorkeling trips usually cost at least US$150 per person for an all-inclusive experience.

If you’re looking for a luxury experience, you may be interested in a VIP Private Boat to Nusa Penida. You’ll get to explore the island with a private speedboat for the day, with no need to navigate public transport. You’ll enjoy a combination of snorkeling with manta rays as well as a land adventure. You can expect to pay roughly US$1,600 for a tour that caters for 3 people.

What do tours include?

Tours are typically inclusive of hotel transfers, boat tickets, lunch, bottled water, any equipment required for activities listed on the itinerary and more. Just make sure you read specific tour inclusions carefully so that you know what to expect.

While private tours are more expensive, you’ll enjoy a personalized experience with a custom itinerary. Your guide will cater solely to the specific needs of you and your travel companions. Most tours take place in English, although some private excursions offer tours in other languages, such as French and Japanese.

Ideal visit timing: When should you plan your trip to Nusa Penida for the best experience?

While Nusa Penida can be visited at any time throughout the year, the optimal time to visit the island is during Indonesia’s dry season, which takes place between May and September.

This period is known for its warm dry weather, with very little chance of rain and great water visibility that is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. Visiting the island during the rainy season can really dampen your overall experience.

Keep in mind that the island is busiest during June and July, which are the peak months for tourism in Indonesia. However, Nusa Penida will still be a lot quieter than Bali, which can get quite chaotic during June and July.

Day trip essentials: What items are crucial to bring along to Nusa Penida?

snorkeling in Nusa Penida

Waterproof bag : It’s recommended that you pack all your day trip essentials into a waterproof daypack so that they are protected against potential splashes during your time on Nusa Penida. If you don’t have a waterproof bag, you can easily find one for sale in Bali.

Sun protection : Sun protection is one of the most important things to take with you for your Nusa Penida day trip. You’ll be enjoying beautiful beaches and the great outdoors, so make sure you pack a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Swimming gear : As you’ll probably be swimming and/or snorkeling, you should also bring along a swimsuit, towel and maybe even a change of clothes in case the outfit you’re traveling in gets wet along the way.

A charged camera : There will be dozens of amazing photo opportunities so make sure you bring your camera or a smartphone for taking pictures. You may want to bring a power bank and backup batteries just in case.

Good walking shoes : Wear comfortable walking shoes for exploring the island, but bring a pair of flip-flops along with for when it comes time to hit the beach.

Local currency : It’s also a good idea to bring some cash along with you as Nusa Penida’s ATMs (close to the island’s northern coast, where the boat terminals are located.) can sometimes be unreliable.

Getting around Nusa Penida: Is it a straightforward process?

When it comes to getting around Nusa Penida, you have a few different options available to you. The island is significantly smaller than Bali, but it is still the largest of the three Nusa islands and walking between all of the attractions is simply not feasible.

Private vehicles : While it is not possible to rent a car and self-drive during your time on the island, you can rent a vehicle with a private driver. This is a good option for if you have a lot of suitcases or want to enjoy the comfort of a car over a scooter.

Scooter rentals : Scooter rental is probably the most popular form of transport on Nusa Penida. There are scooter rental companies all over the island and it is not necessary to make a booking in advance. However, you should inspect the scooter you plan on hiring and make sure that it is in decent condition.

Take care when riding around the island on a scooter as many of the roads have potholes and are in need of improvements. Also keep in mind that complete darkness sets in around 45 minutes after sunset and you don’t want to be driving on Nusa Penida’s unlit roads after dark.

The signal can be faulty on the island so you can’t rely on Google Maps or similar apps to get you around. You may have to rely on asking locals for directions or a physical map to get from one attraction to another.

Guided tours to Nusa Penida : Because of the challenges associated with getting around the island on your own, guided Nusa Penida day trips from Bali are often preferred. This way, an experienced guide will handle your transportation needs and ensure you don’t get lost or put yourself in danger.

Dining options: Where are the best places to eat in Nusa Penida?

restaurant in Nusa Penida

Eateries with global menus in Nusa Penida

No matter where you decide to eat in Nusa Penida. you’re likely to find a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan options. There are so many great restaurants to eat at on the island, so try to visit more than one during your time there.

If you want to buy water, cool drinks, and snacks like chocolate bars, fruit, etc., there are  plenty of supermarkets and corner shops scattered around Nusa Penida, so there is no need to bring these items with you from Bali.

Nusa Lembongan visit: Should you include it in your itinerary?

Nusa Lembongan

If you have the time, you should definitely include the nearby island of Nusa Lembongan in your itinerary. While the islands are similar in many ways, they are still different enough some each other to make it worthwhile to visit both.

Nusa Lembongan may be smaller in size but it has many unmissable attractions of its own, including Devil’s Tears, the Mangrove Forest, Mushroom Beach, the Gala-Gala Underground House and so much more. The island is one of the top-rated destinations in Indonesia and is a firm favorite amongst tourists from all over the world.

Even if you only have a few hours available to you, it is worth your time to visit Nusa Lembongan while you are in the vicinity of the Nusa archipelago.

Island comparison: Nusa Lembongan versus Nusa Penida, which one stands out?

Both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are fantastic island destinations in Indonesia and it is very difficult to say if one is better than the other. The main difference between the two islands is that Nusa Penida is a lot larger than Nusa Lembongan, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Penida has more attractions.

Nusa Lembongan has been catering to tourists for a lot longer than Nusa Penida has, therefore has slightly better infrastructure and a wider variety of things to see and do. Nusa Lembongan also has better surf spots than Nusa Penida, while Penida has more remote beaches.

Both islands are very special in their own way, each boasting a variety of magnificent natural attractions, so why not visit both of them and decide which one is your personal favorite?

Exploring both islands: Is it possible to cover Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida in a single day?

It is definitely possible to visit both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida in one day. The best way to do this would be through booking a boat tour that visits both islands. The two islands are separated by a very narrow waterway, which makes it easy to visit both islands in a single day.

Overnight stay possibilities: What are your options for accommodation if you decide to extend your visit in Nusa Penida?

Unicorn Bungalow, Nusa Penida

If you want to see everything that Nusa Penida has to offer and experience the island in its entirety, you may be interested in extending your day trip and spending a few nights on the island instead. If this is the case, you have an array of different types of accommodation to choose from.

From charming villas to luxury hotels and everything in between, Nusa Penida has accommodation options to suit a range of different budgets and preferences.

Budget-friendly accommodation in Nusa Penida : If you’re interested in budget-friendly options, you may want to make a booking at Ananta Bungalow , Unicorn Bungalow or Pondok Bamboo Villa .

Luxury accommodation in Nusa Penida : If luxury hotels with all the bells and whistles are more to your liking, you may want to stay at Sea La Vie Resort , Deep Roots Dive and Yoga Resort or Mambo Beach Resort .

Wherever you decide to book, the island is well-suited for tourists and you can expect to enjoy well-furnished rooms, beautiful views and all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.

3-Day Trip to Nusa Penida, Indonesia: A Perfect Tour Itinerary

  • Facebook 18

3 Days in Nusa Penida - Itinerary (Bali, Indonesia)

Nusa Penida is a gorgeous, mostly undeveloped island just 30 minutes off the eastern coast of Bali in Indonesia . And unlike Bali, you won’t find hundreds of yoga studios or organic cafes there. Just miles of spectacular cliffs towering over the ocean, exhilarating hiking adventures, white sand beaches, and the friendliest locals.

And while it is possible to do a day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali, that is certainly not the best way to explore this amazing island. We would recommend that you leave your heavy luggage at your hotel in Bali, pack a small bag, and spend at least three days touring the island by motorbike. You’ll stay in different hotels each night and love the freedom that you get from the open road!

Know Before You Go

  • The currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) and at the time of writing, the exchange rate was 14,294 IDR to $1 USD. So if we say something costs 10,000 IDR, that’s less than a dollar.
  • Be sure to get money out of the ATM before leaving Bali. Only a few of the ATMs in Nusa Penida accept foreign cards and they often run out of money or simply don’t work.
  • The roads are terrible! If you’ve never driven a motorbike before, this probably isn’t the best place to learn.
  • Driving everywhere on Nusa Penida takes longer than expected. A 3-4 mile trip can easily take 30 minutes to an hour depending on the weather and road conditions. Leave yourself plenty of extra time so you don’t get caught driving long distances on your motorbike after dark.
  • Both men and women must wear sarongs to enter temples on Nusa Penida Island. While some have sarongs that you can borrow, others do not. It’s worth bringing something that you can tie around your waist, just in case.
  • Check out our complete list of things to know before you visit Nusa Penida !

What to Pack for Nusa Penida

Since you’ll be touring the island on a motorbike, you’ll just want to bring a small backpack that is comfortable to wear all day.

  • Swimsuit and coverup
  • Tennis shoes
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Socks and underwear
  • Compact camera and/or GoPro Camera

nusa penida tour cost

If rain is in the forecast during your visit, we’d recommend bringing one extra change of clothes and keeping it in a ziplock bag. We were drenched at the end of every day from the rain or the ocean, and since nothing ever dries in the humid climate all of our clothes were soggy for the entire trip.

Getting to Nusa Penida Island

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Fast Ferry

Ferries depart from the Sanur Pier on the eastern coast of Bali. This is about 30-45 minutes from Kuta, 1 hour from Seminyak, and 1-1.5 hours from Canggu , and 2 hours from either Ubud or Uluwatu. It’s not far but traffic on Bali can be terrible so leave yourself plenty of time to get to Sanur before your boat’s scheduled departure.

The ferry trip from Sanur Bali to Nusa Penida takes just 45 minutes and will cost anywhere from 150,000 to 200,000 IDR per person depending on who sells you the ticket and how hard you bargain. Ferries depart frequently throughout the day so if you’re traveling during the low season, it’s easy to show up at the pier and just buy a ticket for the next departure.

During high season you should book your ferry well in advance as they occasionally sell out for weeks at a time. We recommend doing it online at Bookaway.com . There you can see all of the fast ferry routes and schedules as well as compare prices.

Check Fast Ferry Schedule & Ticket Prices

Motorbike Basics

As soon as you arrive at the pier on Nusa Penida, you’ll be approached by men offering to rent you a bike right there. And if you head to the main street just one block over, there are several small shops renting motorbikes as well. Expect to pay around 70,000 IDR per day.

It doesn’t really matter where you rent your bike from as long as it is in good condition. You’re going to be riding on some rough roads in remote parts of the island so you definitely don’t want to have your motorbike break down on Nusa Penida!

Be sure to check the following prior to committing to a bike:

  • Make sure both brakes work well as there are a lot of hills on the island.
  • Check the shocks – you’re going to have a bumpy ride!
  • Take photos of any existing damage, just in case.
  • Fill up on gas before you set out.
  • There are small shops all over the island that sell petrol but you won’t use it much as you’ll be covering very small distances.

We had great luck with our bike from Double-G Guesthouse , they clearly keep their rentals in good condition.

Complete 3-Day Itinerary for Nusa Penida Island in Indonesia

Day 1: angel’s billabong, broken beach, and crystal bay.

You’re going to have a lot of activities over the next three days so we would recommend catching an early ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida Island. As mentioned previously, you can rent a motorbike from one of the entrepreneurs hanging out at the pier or head one street over and shop around for a good bargain on a motorbike rental.

Once you have your bike and a full tank of gas, it’s time to begin your tour of Nusa Penida! Head south towards Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach . Be careful while driving on this road because it gets a lot of vehicle traffic from the day tours of the island and the cars don’t leave a lot of room for motorbikes to get by. You may want to pull off to the side if you see a line of them heading your way.

The road to Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach is the worst on the entire island so plan for a bumpy ride. Not only is the road badly damaged, but because of the long distance, you must drive on the rutted, rocky road.

Angel’s Billabong

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Angel's Billabong

When you arrive at Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach, you’ll need to pay the entrance fee of 5,000 IDR per person and 1,000 IDR for motorbike parking. There are several small restaurants here if you want to have a snack or rest with an ice-cold beverage before continuing on your tour. Be aware that this is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island so expect to encounter crowds.

Angel’s Billabong is a small swimming hole with gorgeous, turquoise water that overlooks the ocean. It is surrounded by high rocks so you can enjoy the view from above. It’s one of the most beautiful spots on Nusa Penida.

Swimming here is only allowed right at low tide and is roped off when it is deemed unsafe by the “lifeguard” on duty. There have been incidents of unsuspecting tourists getting swept out to sea by a particularly large sneaker wave here so safety is a priority. Be sure to check the tide report prior to visiting as swimming here is absolutely amazing!

Broken Beach

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Broken Beach

Broken Beach is essentially a beach that is completely surrounded by cliff walls; a natural sea arch allows water to flow through. You can walk the loop trail high above the enclosed beach area and see the spectacular views from all angles. There are even several platforms that you can stand on to best capture a photo.

Your final stop for the day is Crystal Bay . It’s only a little over 11 miles from Angel’s Billabong, but it will take you about an hour to drive back over that terrible, bumpy road you just came down!

Crystal Bay

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Crystal Bay

The water in Crystal Bay is calm and it’s perfect for snorkeling. You can rent snorkel gear on the beach for 50,000 IDR to see the coral. Or you can just relax on the beach with an ice-cold Bintang in hand. There are numerous small warungs lining the beach that serve food and drinks.

If you have an extra day on Nusa Penida, you can also sign onto one of the daily diving/snorkeling trips to Manta Point where you can swim with giant manta rays (more about that below).

Be sure to watch the sunset on the beach at Crystal Bay, the sun sets behind the huge rock in the middle of the bay and it’s absolutely magical. You’ll be happy if you’re staying nearby so you don’t have to worry about driving after dark!

Where to Stay: Puri Penida Cottage is just a short, 5-minute walk from the bay. Each darling little bungalow has a large, comfortable bed and air conditioning to keep you cool in the heat.

Day 2: Kelingking Beach and Tembeling Beach

From Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach, you’ll have a 30-minute ride to Kelingking Beach . This is the most famous location on Nusa Penida due to the fact that the peninsula jutting out into the ocean resembles a T-Rex when viewed from the right angle. This is also a very touristy spot, but most visitors simply snap a few photos from the lookout at the top and don’t actually hike down to the beautiful beach below.

Kelingking Beach

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Kelingking Beach

Again, you’ll pay 5,000 IDR per person to enter the area and 1,000 IDR to park your motorbike. You’ll walk past a few small restaurants to the beginning of the stairway where views of the T-Rex will start to come into view. This is where the crowds gather. Keep walking down to where the actual trail begins and you’ll start to see fewer and fewer people.

The trail to Kelingking Beach follows the ridgeline of the peak and then takes an abrupt right turn for an even steeper descent down the mountain. It takes about 45 minutes to descend, and an hour to hike back up. You’ll most certainly want tennis shoes here as the trail is very steep and rocky. And while there are railings for most of the hike, there are times you’ll need to do some rock scrambling. And the railings get less sturdy toward the bottom of the hike.

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Kelingking Beach

But once you reach Kelingking Beach, you’ll know it was all worth it! Here you’ll find a beautiful and secluded white sand beach, where only the most dedicated visitors are lounging. There is one small stand where you can purchase drinks or snacks but be sure to bring your own water, just in case it’s closed. The waves here are intense so be careful.

Your next stop is Tembeling Beach and Forest which is just over four miles away from Kelingking Beach and should take about 40 minutes on your motorbike. If you want to stop for lunch on your way there, we recommend heading inland to Warung D’Coconut . It’s a little bit out of your way but the food is excellent!

Tembeling Beach

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Tembeling Beach

Once you reach the turnoff for Tembeling Beach, it’s about 1.85 miles down a steep paved lane just wide enough for one motorbike at a time. It’s a total forest surrounding you the whole way and there’s a steep drop-off on one side. But the vegetation is so thick you probably won’t even notice how far the drop really is.

If you’re touring Nusa Penida by car or you don’t feel comfortable navigating such a steep road on your own motorbike, you can hire a motorbike taxi driver to take you down to Tembeling Beach. There are a handful of drivers that wait at the turnoff from the main road. The going seems to be 50,000 INR for the round-trip journey plus some wait time at the bottom.

Once you arrive at the parking lot for Tembeling Beach, you’ll still need to descend a set of steep steps down to the beach. It’s just about a 10-minute walk to the beach at the bottom. There are two freshwater swimming holes here, one about halfway down, and one that overlooks the ocean. It’s so refreshing to cool off in the calm water, without getting salty or sandy from the beach.

If you do want to enjoy the beach here, it is small but incredibly beautiful. Enclosed by tall cliff walls with large rocks on either side. It feels totally secluded and you’re likely to see more locals than foreigners here. In fact, this was our favorite spot on the whole island of Nusa Penida!

There is a small swing set here and usually a lady selling drinks and snacks. You’ll want to spend at least an hour here soaking in the pools and enjoying the ocean view.

Our favorite place to stay on Nusa Penida is The Mesare Resort ; just 7 miles from Tembeling Beach. After a long day of climbing stairs, you’ll definitely want to have an ice-cold beer while swimming in their lovely pool. Plus, you’ll have the best night’s sleep in their massive and luxurious beds!

Where to Stay: The Mesare Resort is one of the best hotels on the whole island. Offering super comfortable beds, luxurious outdoor showers, and daily yoga sessions, you’ll have a hard time leaving this little piece of paradise.

If you’re on a tight budget, Agasta Villa is just another great option in the area though you’ll have to do a little backtracking. The bungalows are brand new, with comfortable beds, air conditioning, and a hot shower!

Where to Eat: Warung D’Coconut is a great stop for lunch, although a bit pricier than many of the warungs on the island. Be sure to try the calamari and the gado-gado! You can also eat dinner there if you’re staying at Holy Hill Villa.

Day 3: Peguyangan Waterfall, Diamond Beach, and Atuh Beach

You’ll want to get an early start again today especially if you’re hoping to catch a ferry back to Bali in the afternoon. Your first stop is Peguyangan Waterfall . It’s four miles from The Mesare Resort and should take you about 30 minutes to drive there.

Peguyangan Waterfall

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Peguyangan Waterfall (Blue Stairs)

You’ll need to pay 5,000 IDR to park your motorbike and 10,000 IDR per person to rent a sarong. Both men and women need to wear sarongs here as there is a sacred temple at the bottom.

You may have seen photos of Peguyangan Waterfall’s famous blue stairs that cling to the side of a cliff wall and lead down to the ocean below. This hike is intense and not for anyone who is afraid of heights. Some of the stairs are concrete, but others are blue metal slats where you can see through to the ocean far, far below your feet.

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Peguyangan Waterfall

When you reach the bottom there is a small temple. And past that you’ll see a sign for a “bathing area”. The steps down to the bathing area are slippery so be careful here. At the base of the stairs are several man-made pools that catch the spring water from the mountain. Here you can relax and enjoy the waves crashing into the rocks below you. If you’re wondering why it’s called a waterfall, you’ll notice a small one-off to the right side when you’re facing the ocean in the pools.

Your next stop is Diamond Beach . It’s about 12.5 miles from the Peguyangan Waterfall but will take about an hour by motorbike. If you have extra time to spare, stop at Teletubbies Hill for the beautiful views.

Diamond Beach

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Diamond Beach

It’s 10,000 IDR per person to enter the Diamond Beach / Atuh Beach area. Once you park you have three choices. You can take a right and go down the stairs to Diamond Beach. Another option is to go straight and head up the hill to a small temple with nice views. Or, take a left and head down the stairs to Atuh Beach.

The stairs down to Diamond Beach are very picturesque as you get the view of the beach below. There are usually people here taking photos. The descent is tricky in some areas but there are ropes to hang on to.

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Diamond Beach

There is a woman with a small stand at the bottom. You can pay 100,000 IDR to get harnessed into her awesome swing off the side of the cliff, or 50,000 IDR to sit in one of her “nests” for a photo shoot. She also has cold drinks and snacks for sale.

The waves here are aggressive, and during high tide, there’s not a lot of beach left to sit on. But it is the most beautiful beach on Nusa Penida and well worth the trip down.

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Atuh Beach

Atuh Beach has much calmer water for swimming or snorkeling and many more amenities. The beach is lined with warungs selling seafood, fruit shakes, and cold Bingtangs.

You can rent two lounge chairs with an umbrella between them for 50,000 IDR. It’s the perfect place to grab lunch and spend an afternoon on Nusa Penida.

Rumah Pohon Tree House

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Rumah Pohon Tree House

While you’re in the area, you may as well stop by the famous Instagram tree houses of Nusa Penida. The Rumah Pohon Tree Houses are small houses that have been built into the trees high on a hill with spectacular views of Diamond Beach below. They have become quite famous on social media with hundreds of photographers descending on the viewpoint daily to snap the perfect Instagram selfie.

If you can plan far enough in advance, you can actually spend a night in one of the tree houses , but they book out months in advance. Sleeping in one of the tree houses is quite expensive for how basic the accommodations are, but you’re really paying for the view.

Or you can simply pay 10,000 IDR per person to check them out and snap a few photos.

Back to Bali

From Atuh Beach, it’s just a 1-hour drive back to the pier on the west side of Nusa Penida where you’ll drop off your motorbike and catch the ferry back to Bali.

One interesting stop along the way is the Goa Giri Putri Temple. This Hindu temple is hidden in a cave and you’ll have to crawl through a small entrance to access it. Once you’re inside; however, it opens up into a large cavern filled with incense smoke and Hindu worshippers. As usual, you’ll need to be wearing a sarong to enter the temple, but there are a few shops nearby offering cheap sarong rentals.

And finally, if you have left yourself some extra time then stop at the famous Penida Colada beach bar for happy hour (2 for 1 cocktail from 4 pm – 7 pm) and beautiful sunset views of Mount Agung.

Where to Stay: If you have time consider spending a night at Kempoel Jangkang . It’s just a short, 5-minute motorbike ride from Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach. Accommodations are basic but rooms have air conditioning and the food here is some of the best on the entire island!

Where to Eat: The food at Kempoel Jangkang is fantastic. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, it’s a good stop for lunch on your way to Diamond Beach. There are also numerous warungs at Atuh Beach offering food and drinks.

If You Have More Time on Nusa Penida Island

There are a few popular attractions that we left off the list for various reasons. If you can spend more time on the island, it’s worth checking them out!

Manta Point

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Giant Manta Ray at Manta Point

One of the most popular sites on Nusa Penida is actually underwater. If you have an extra day on Nusa Penida, sign up for a boat trip to Manta Point. The boats typically leave from Crystal Bay. They will include pickup services from your hotel if you’re staying on the west side of the island.

You’ll have the opportunity to swim with giant manta rays which will undoubtedly be a highlight of your trip to Nusa Penida !

Banah Cliff Point

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Banah Cliff Point

Banah Cliff Point is located between Kelingking Beach and Tembeling Beach. We left it off our itinerary because the last mile of the road to get there is incredibly rough. We ended up parking our bike about 1/4 mile from the point and walking the rest of the way. There are nice views of the cliffs from both sides of the point. But, in our opinion, they were no better than the views from, say, Kelingking. If you do go, there is a really friendly little shop. It has a few hot dishes as well as chips and cold drinks for sale.

Saren Cliff Point

Nusa Penida Itinerary, Bali, Indonesia: Saren Cliff Point

Saren Cliff Point is located on the coast between Tembeling Beach and Peguyangan. And as with Banah, the last mile or so of the road here is terrible. And again, the views are nice, but it may not be worth the difficult drive if you are short on time.

Pura Puncak Mundi

Pura Puncak Mundi is the temple that is located on the highest point on the island. Men and women must wear a sarong to enter the temple, and as with all Indonesian temples, foreigners are not allowed to enter the inner sanctuary.

The drive up to the temple is really beautiful, with views of the lush vegetation for miles in all directions. However, the temple isn’t all that interesting and people there will look at you like you are crazy for visiting. Plus, there are no real views from the actual temple.

Enjoy your tour of Nusa Penida Island!

About Nusa Penida: What Makes This Island Special?

Nusa Penida, a serene retreat off Bali’s southeastern coast, is a jewel in Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda Islands. Known for its dramatic cliffs and white-sand beaches, the island’s landscape, including the iconic Kelingking Beach, is a testament to nature’s artistry, attracting photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Rich in Balinese traditions, Nusa Penida offers an authentic cultural experience, far from the bustle of tourist hotspots. Its ancient temples and colourful ceremonies reflect a lifestyle preserved over centuries.

The surrounding waters are a biodiverse marine sanctuary, renowned for vibrant coral reefs and the opportunity to swim with majestic manta rays. Home to diverse marine life, these waters symbolize the island’s commitment to conservation.

Nusa Penida’s fusion of natural beauty, cultural depth, and marine diversity makes it an enchanting destination for those seeking adventure and tranquillity.

Yet, one should note: it is not the easiest of islands to navigate and you should both figuratively and literally “buckle up” as Nusa Penida can be a wild ride. In this blog, we guide you through making the most of your Nusa Penida experience, ensuring an unforgettable journey.

Is Nusa Penida Worth a Visit?

Absolutely! Nusa Penida is not just a destination; it’s a mosaic of experiences. From the adrenaline rush of exploring rugged terrains to the tranquillity of secluded beaches, every corner of the island promises something unique. Whether you’re hiking to breathtaking viewpoints or diving into the rich marine world, Nusa Penida offers a blend of adventure and serenity that caters to every kind of traveller.

What to Do on Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida can roughly be divided into two parts: the West and the East, each offering its own unique blend of breathtaking vistas, adventurous hikes, and pristine beaches. While the Western side of Nusa Penida has long been celebrated for its iconic landscapes, including the famous T-Rex shaped cliff of Kelingking Beach, the Eastern part of the island is an uncharted paradise, just as mesmerizing and filled with hidden gems.

Below we list the best places to explore on both ends of the island.

What to do on the West of Nusa Penida Island

Discover the t-rex cliff of kelingking beach.

Kelingking Beach , named after its resemblance to a ‘little finger’, is famed for its T-Rex shaped cliff and amazing yellow sand, drawing tourists worldwide. This spot is highly popular, so the best times to visit are early morning before 11:00 am or after 16:00 pm to avoid the crowds from day tours.

Bali 26

The descent to the beach is an adventurous climb, improved but still challenging. It requires good physical fitness and caution due to its steep nature.

Also be aware that many monkeys roam the hills especially in the morning hours. It’s best to keep them on a distance, as they can be cheeky and may steal your sunglasses and other things easy to grab.

Marvel at the Unique Rock Formations of Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong

The rugged, moonlike landscape of Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach, lay directly next to each other and can be visited in one go. Broken Beach is a captivating place, due to its natural arch over the sea. You can often spot manta rays and dolphins swimming in the waters below, adding to its magical ambiance.

Bali 16

Angel’s Billabong is a natural infinity pool you’ll surely encounter on your way to Broken Beach. This place is equally stunning but warrants caution. Unexpected waves can crash in, making swimming here potentially dangerous. Enjoy its beauty from a safe distance, especially during high tide or rough sea conditions.

Serene waters of Angel's Billabong in Nusa Penida framed by rugged limestone formations under a vibrant blue sky with wispy clouds.

Snorkel with Manta Rays

Another thing you do not want to miss on the Western side of Nusa Penida, is the wonder of swimming with manta rays in crystal-clear waters. These gentle giants are often found here due to the rich plankton content in the water.

The best time to see them is during the dry season, from April to October. We have done this activity twice, once in January which happened to be perfect and once in December, with no mantas to be found. Weather conditions also play a role; calm and clear days are ideal.

To snorkel with the manta rays, you can book a guided tour. These are available when you are staying on the island of Nusa Penida itself , but they can also be done from Bali , especially Sanur.

Discover the Beauty of Crystal Bay Above and Below Water

Crystal Bay is another amazing bay on Nusa Penida. This place is not only a fantastic snorkelling spot with vibrant corals and tropical fish but also a place where you might spot the elusive mola mola (sunfish) during the right season.

Above water, it’s a paradise for sunset lovers, offering breathtaking views as the sun dips below the horizon and behind the beautiful natural arch.

Sunset at Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida, highlighting the rocky islet against the vibrant evening sky with waves lapping the shore.

A less-crowded snorkeling haven, Gamat Bay is perfect for those looking to explore vibrant underwater life in a more serene setting. This bay is often visited during snorkelling tours on Nusa Penida, but one does not necessarily need to visit this place per boat. You can also visit the beach here and snorkel from there.

Amok Sunset

Complete your day exploring the West of Nusa Penida at Amok Sunset , an idyllic location known for its stunning sunsets and amazing deserts. The sky’s transformation into shades of gold and crimson here is truly a photographer’s delight.

What to do on The East of Nusa Penida Island

Take unparalleled photos at diamond beach.

Diamond Beach , with its dramatic cliffs and sparkling sands, offers some of the best photo opportunities on the island. The natural staircase carved into the cliff provides access to this stunning beach, though the descent requires caution.

Sunrise illuminating the pristine Diamond Beach and its surrounding cliffs on Nusa Penida with the day's first light.

Although an absolute gem, Diamond Beach has become more popular over the past few years, so this is again a place you may want to visit early to beat the crowds. Yet, this place too is brimming with monkeys. As we experienced, they are not aggressive but it is best to keep your distance.

Relax at Atuh Beach

Adjacent to Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach is a more laid-back spot, ideal for relaxation and sunbathing. It offers more amenities than its neighbour, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely day by the sea.

Experience Breathtaking Views at Thousand Island Viewpoint

This viewpoint offers one of the most iconic views in Nusa Penida. The famous Molateng treehouse here provides a unique photo opportunity, but be prepared for a climb to reach this spot. Arriving early, around 7:00 am, is advisable to beat the crowds and have a more peaceful experience.

Secluded wooden treehouse overlooking the turquoise waters of Nusa Penida, Indonesia, with a rugged staircase leading up to its entrance.

This place is quite well known for being one of the best photography spots on the planet, which means that generally speaking it is visited by about 200 people a day. This means that during peak hours you will only get about 2 minutes to take pictures.

Venture Further off the Beaten Path to Teletubbies Hill

Teletubbies Hill , named after its resemblance to the rolling hills from the children’s show, showcases the diverse landscape of Nusa Penida. It’s a tranquil spot, perfect for enjoying the island’s natural beauty away from the tourist trails.

Aerial view of the rolling green hills of Teletubbies Hill in Nusa Penida, with a winding path cutting through the vibrant landscape.

It is quite near to Diamond Beach and Thousand Island Viewpoint, so perfect to add as a stop when visiting these other amazing places.

How Long Do You Need to Explore Nusa Penida Island?

As always the answer to this question depends on your own wishes and schedule.

If you ask us: Can Nusa Penida be done in one day? The only way to do this is to pre-book a tour that will take you to the highlights of the West and/or the East , both can be done in one day but be ware that it will be a packed tour and you’ll not be able to visit all the places listed here above.

It will also be difficult to combine a visit to the amazing coastline of Nusa Penida with the snorkelling with the manta rays, but there are some tours that do offer a combination of the two .

Golden sunlight bathing the rugged cliffs of Nusa Penida with the shimmering ocean extending into the horizon during sunset.

If you have time available, we recommend to stay at least three full days on Nusa Penida, one for snorkelling, one to discover the West of the island and one day to discover the East. This will provide enough time to get to know the island a little bit more intimately, relax and soak up some amazing sunsets.

Bali 32

How to Get to Nusa Penida from Bali?

To get to Nusa Penida from Bali you best take a speedboat or ferry from Sanur harbour. These can easily be booked here . The ride to Nusa Penida will take about 30 minutes and cost somewhere between $6 and $10.

Not all ferries are created equal on Bali, for a smooth transit we recommend Angel Billabong.

Stay in Style: Nusa Penida Hotels and Resorts

Nusa Penida may be smaller than Bali, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm and intrigue. Given the island’s somewhat challenging terrain and bumpy roads, where travel often takes longer than expected, selecting the right accommodation is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Stays in West Nusa Penida

Our recommendation is to at least stay a night or two on the West of the island, where you find the most famous sites like Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, and popular snorkelling spots teeming with manta rays. Here, accommodation options cater to a range of preferences and budgets.

For a luxurious stay, ‘ Atalaya ‘ is an exceptional choice. We had a memorable experience at this high-end villa, where comfort meets elegance. For those seeking more economical options, The Tinsi offers cozy and affordable lodging, ensuring a comfortable stay without breaking the bank.

Atalaya Nusa Penida

For a unique and upscale experience, Autentik Penida “Glamping” provides a glamorous camping (glamping) experience with breathtaking views. It’s an ideal choice for those who want to enjoy the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort.

Autentik Penida Glamping

Additionally, West Nusa Penida is home to MAUA Nusa Penida , the island’s most magnificent retreat. While staying here may cost a few hundred dollars per night, it promises an unparalleled experience of luxury and exclusivity, perfect for special occasions or those looking to splurge on an extravagant getaway.

Maua Nusa Penida

Stays in East Nusa Penida

To make your travelling on Nusa Penida as effective as possible, it is also advisable to stay one night on the East of the island. This area tends to offer more budget-friendly accommodations.

Near the stunning Diamond Beach, options like Atuh Forest Cottage allow you to immerse yourself in nature. Here, forest cottages are available for less than $25 a night, offering a serene and rustic experience.

Or stay in a traditional cozy Lombok-style cottage for about $60 a night at Kompyang Cottage .

Nusa Penida Tours: Your Gateway to Adventure

Uncover the hidden gems and famous attractions of Nusa Penida with various organized tours. From cultural excursions to adrenaline-fueled adventures, find the tour that resonates with your spirit of exploration.

Day Tours of the West and East of the Island

West Nusa Penida Day Tours: These tours typically cover major attractions like Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, and Broken Beach. They offer a convenient way to experience the dramatic landscapes and iconic sights of the island’s western part, often including comfortable transport and a knowledgeable guide.

You can take this tour from about any place in Bali if you reserve it here . If you’re staying on the island of Nusa Penida, this tour allows you to combine the ‘best of the West’ with snorkelling with the manta rays.

East Nusa Penida Day Tours: Focus on the less-travelled eastern part of the island, where you can explore the serene beauty of Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, and the Thousand Island Viewpoint. These tours (like this one from Bali ) are perfect for those who prefer a quieter experience away from the more popular western sites.

Staircase descending to the secluded Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida, with its distinctive T-Rex shaped headland and turquoise waters.

Snorkelling Tours

Snorkelling tours in Nusa Penida are a must-do for marine life enthusiasts. These tours often include spots like Manta Bay, where you can snorkel with manta rays, and Crystal Bay, known for its clear waters and vibrant coral reefs. These guided tours provide all the necessary equipment and safety briefings, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced snorkelers.

You can take a snorkelling tour at Nusa Penida from the island itself , or alternatively you can book a Nusa Penida snorkelling day tour from Bali .

Diving Tours

For the more adventurous underwater explorers, diving tours offer a deeper dive into the marine wonders of Nusa Penida. With sites suitable for all levels, from shallow reefs for beginners to more challenging drift dives for experienced divers, these tours (like this one or this smaller two dives tour ) showcase the rich biodiversity of the island’s underwater world. Highlights include the chance to see manta rays up close and the colourful coral gardens teeming with marine life.

Customizable Private Tours

For those who prefer a personalized experience, customizable private tours are available, like this one from Bali and this one from Nusa Penida itself . These tours allow you to pick and choose the sites you wish to visit and can be tailored to your interests, whether it’s focusing on photography, culture, nature, or a mix of everything. Private tours offer flexibility and a more intimate exploration of the island.

Paragliding Adventures

It’s an activity that combines the thrill of flight with the beauty of the island’s scenery.

Sunset rays peek over the cliffside at Nusa Penida, illuminating the island's rugged coastline and the serene ocean below.

Transportation on the island

Navigating Nusa Penida can be an adventure in itself due to its rugged and hilly terrain. Knowing your transportation options and planning accordingly can make your journey around the island both enjoyable and safe.

Renting a Scooter or Motorbike

For the more adventurous, renting a scooter or motorbike offers the freedom to explore Nusa Penida at your own pace. However, it’s important to note that the island’s roads can be challenging, with steep inclines, sharp turns, and occasionally rough surfaces.

Prior experience with driving a scooter or motorbike is essential for safety. Always wear a helmet, drive cautiously, and be prepared for unexpected road conditions. If you’re not confident in your riding abilities, it’s best to consider other transportation options.

Also note that insurance from your home country may not provide coverage if you drive a scooter with more power than your driving licence allows. Make sure you have the correct driving licences and insurance.

Hired Cars with Drivers

For those preferring a more relaxed way to travel, hiring a car with a driver is an excellent choice. Local drivers are knowledgeable about the best routes and can navigate the island’s tricky roads with ease. This option allows you to enjoy the scenic views and attractions without the stress of driving.

Guided Tours

Opting for guided tours can be a hassle-free way to see the island. These tours often include transportation as part of the package, making it a convenient choice for those who want to visit multiple sites without worrying about directions or transport logistics.

Public Transportation

While Nusa Penida doesn’t have an extensive public transportation system, there are some local shuttle services available. These are more suitable for short distances and might not cover all tourist destinations, but they can be a budget-friendly option for getting around.

Safety and Comfort Tips

No matter which transportation option you choose, always prioritize safety and comfort. Bring along sun protection, stay hydrated, and take breaks during your journey to enjoy the stunning views Nusa Penida has to offer.

Article overview

Best time to snorkel in Nusa Penida

Private one-day nusa penida snorkeling tour, other popular nusa penida tours, how to get around on nusa penida, manta bay and manta point, crystal bay, toyapakeh wall, green sea turtles, reef and bamboo sharks, what to bring on a snorkeling trip, where to stay in nusa penida, remember to pin for later 😉, is nusa penida good for snorkeling.

Absolutely! Nusa Penida is a fantastic destination to go snorkeling, actually one of the best in all of Indonesia. Its pristine, clear blue waters and diverse marine life make it a captivating underwater paradise.

Trust me when I say that snorkeling in Nusa Penida is an experience you don’t want to miss while in Bali.

The best time to snorkel in Nusa Penida is in the dry season , which falls between April and October. During these months, the water is generally calm, allowing for better visibility and a more enjoyable experience.

The optimal time of day for snorkeling in Nusa Penida is in the morning when the light is just perfect.

It’s important to note that conditions can change, and sometimes the water can get a bit rough. Before heading out on your own, always inquire with local guides to ensure snorkeling is a good idea for the day.

Kelingking Beach, one of the stops on our snorkeling trip to Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida snorkeling tours

There are many amazing tours to choose from online these days. Some tours cover all the popular spots around Nusa Penida, while others also include snorkeling around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan .

The tour my friends and I booked is this 10-hour private Nusa Penida snorkeling tour departing from Bali.

You can choose between a snorkeling-only tour, or spend the afternoon exploring the island, with stops at Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach (Pasih Uug Beach), and Angel’s Billabong. Nusa Penida is such a beautiful island and actually quite different from Bali, so I highly recommend you choose both!

Many so-called “private” Nusa Penida Island tours include transfers by public fast boat, however, this tour gets you there on your very own boat. It was such a treat to skip the lines in Sanur Harbor and lounge in the sun on the roof on the way over. (You also have the option to choose a shared fast boat to make the tour more affordable.)

We started the day at Manta Point and I got to experience the incredible Manta Rays. I have always been very nervous in the water and never enjoyed being around large sea creatures, however, I absolutely loved this experience. So you can safely bring your anxious friends or family members.

Our next stop was Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay, before a nice lunch at AMARTA Sunset Lounge & Bar with the most amazing views. The highlight of the snorkeling for me was seeing Sea Turles up close, I just love them so much.

After lunch, we got in an air-conditioned car and headed to all the Nusa Penida highlights I mentioned above. My lovely, knowledgeable and very accommodating guide Gee, doubled as a photographer. I can hands down say that this is one of the best guided tours I’ve ever been on.

How to get to Nusa Penida

If you prefer to spend some more time in Nusa Penida, you can easily book a transfer only online . The easiest way to get to Nusa Penida by yourself is by taking a fast boat from Sanur Habor in Bali.

The boat ride usually takes around 45 minutes, and there are several operators offering daily schedules.

Keep in mind that it can be a bit difficult to get on board the boats in Indonesia, often without a ramp. So I can’t recommend this for people with mobility issues.

🌟 You can check price & availability here >> Fast boat from Bali to Nusa Penida

The best way to get around Nusa Penida largely depends on personal preference and comfort level. Renting a scooter, or motorbike as the locals call them, is a popular option for those who are comfortable navigating bumpy dirt roads and want the freedom to explore the island at their own pace.

I love to ride a motorbike on Nusa Lembongan , however, driving in Nusa Penida was a whole other story. The island is much larger than I thought, let’s just say I have never gotten lost so many times as I did in Nusa Penida.

At one point Google Maps guided me into a village meeting where I was quickly and sternly asked to leave. Yikes!

With a private driver

On the other hand, if you’re not comfortable riding a motorbike or want a more comfortable and convenient option, I recommend renting a car with a driver.

When I don’t feel like driving by myself, I usually book this customizable tour . You have the driver for 8 hours and can set your own itinerary or take suggestions from the driver. Remember to pick option 2 if you’re already in Nusa Penida.

Crystal Bay - The second stop on our snorkeling tour to Nusa Penida from Bali

Best snorkeling spots in Nusa Penida

The highlight of snorkeling in Nusa Penida is Manta Bay or Manta Point because you get the chance to swim with the majestic Manta Rays. In my mind, snorkeling in Manta Bay is an experience that everyone should have on their Bali Bucket List .

It is known for being one of the best places in the world to swim with manta rays, and the strong currents in the waters surrounding Nusa Penida mean that these graceful giants are present all year round. The visibility is usually excellent, making it an enjoyable experience for snorkelers of all skill levels.

Keep in mind that these are very popular snorkeling and freediving spots, which means that it does get very crowded. Don’t be discouraged if there are 10 other boats when you get there, you can still have an incredible experience.

I prefer Manta Bay because Manta Point is located out in deeper water, not sheltered by any headlands. That means that the currents are much stronger, though both are located on the exposed side of Nusa Penida.

You’ll find Manta Bay just south of Broken Beach and Angel Billabong, two of the most popular tourist destinations on the west coast of the island, both included in this guided tour . You can see photos of both in my West Nusa Penida guide .

Crystal Bay is home to a beautiful sandy beach perfect for relaxing before and after snorkeling. It is up there with the best beaches on Nusa Lembongan , just with a ton more palm trees. You may even get lucky enough to catch sight of dolphins from the sand. Gotta love that, right?

It is arguably the most popular spot for underwater enthusiasts of all levels due to the easy access from shore, its abundance of colorful coral, sandy bottom and shallow clear waters. It is especially popular from July to October when you get the chance to witness the large sunfish, also known as Mola Mola.

If you decide to visit Crystal Bay on your own, you can conveniently rent snorkeling gear from one of the warungs along the beach. Just remember that unless you’re a very experienced swimmer, don’t go further out than where the boats are anchored, the currents can take you by surprise.

Located in the channel between Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan, Gamat Bay boasts an impressive reef wall that is home to abundant marine life. I was amazed by the rich underwater world here, the colorful coral is among the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.

Gamat Bay is easily reached both from the shore and via boat. It is surrounded by cliffs, creating a serene and quiet atmosphere while snorkeling. Remember to bring your GoPro or a more affordable underwater camera , because of the good light and shallow depth, it is an excellent location for shooting underwater pics.

Continue north and you’ll reach Toyapakeh Wall, known as one of the best snorkeling and dive sites in this area. It sits in the northern mouth of the Ceningan Channel, which means that the site is continuously fed from the currents flowing through bringing smaller fish and nutrients for the coral.

While the water is deep and currents strong, at times unpredictable, you are rewarded with impressive coral pillars featuring both hard and soft corals and rich marine biodiversity. Expect to see large schools of colorful fish, Bamboo Sharks and my favorite, turtles.

Four Manta Rays spotted while snorkeling in Nusa Penida

What you can see snorkeling in Nusa Penida

During my snorkeling tour in Nusa Penida , I was lucky enough to see the majestic manta rays up close. These gentle giants were gliding effortlessly through the water and it was fascinating to watch them feed on plankton.

Surprisingly large, flat and slightly weird looking, they are named for their unique appearance, Manta meaning blanket or cloak in Spanish.

The type of manta rays that you can expect to see on Nusa Penida is reef manta rays, the second largest ray in the world. With a wingspan of up to 5 meters, they are hard to miss.

Is it safe to swim with manta rays?

Yes, it is generally safe to swim with manta rays, not to be confused with stingrays. In fact, their calm demeanor and curiosity made the experience very enjoyable for me. Just remember to keep your distance, at least 3 meters, and avoid touching them as their skin is extremely delicate.

Another highlight of my snorkeling adventure in Nusa Penida was seeing the green sea turtles. These sometimes curious creatures can come up to you to investigate your camera. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any good shots as I was too busy keeping calm to not scare it away.

This colossal fish, often measuring over three meters in diameter and weighing over a ton, usually keeps to depths of several hundred meters. However, during the colder months, it surfaces to much shallower waters, making it visible to divers and if you’re very lucky, snorkelers.

I was thrilled to see some sharks as well. During a visit to Fiji some years ago, I forgo the chance to swim with these sharks because I was too scared and regretted it ever since. This time I was assured by my guide that it was completely safe, so I managed to stay in the water and keep relatively calm.

Although they may appear intimidating, they were actually quite shy and seemed disinterested in my presence.

The one thing I wanted to see that I didn’t was the well-camouflaged frogfish. These unique fish are ambush predators, and it would have been interesting to see them blend in with the coral and rocks.

Overall, snorkeling in Nusa Penida was an unforgettable experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to witness the beauty and diversity of the underwater world while in Indonesia.

A swarm og colorful fish above a green coral reef, seen while snorkeling in Nusa Penida

Once you have decided whether to join a guided snorkeling tour or make your way to Nusa Penida on your own, it is time to pack your bags.

The number-one essential to bring on a snorkeling trip to Nusa Penida (or take before you go) is seasickness tablets. Consider also wearing a seasickness wristband on the boat, I’ve found these to be very helpful. If you’re anything like me and get seasick easily, this can make or break your experience.

I also recommend wearing your swimsuit under your clothes as these popular snorkeling spots do get crowded with no places to change in private.

Here’s a list of other items I always make sure to bring on my snorkeling trips:

  • Snorkeling gear : Although the tours provide everything you need, if you plan to spend a lot of time in the water, it might be a good idea to bring your own for a better fit and hygiene reasons.
  • Waterproof and reef-safe sunscreen : I apply it generously before getting into the water and throughout the day. It is so easy to get severely sunburned out on the water, it can literally ruin the rest of your trip.
  • Swimwear and a lightweight towel : Comfortable swimwear is important for enjoying your time in the water without having to readjust all the time, and a towel comes in handy for drying off afterward.
  • Underwater camera : Capturing the beautiful marine life around Nusa Penida is a must, so remember to bring your GoPro or waterproof case for your phone. I absolutely love my GoPro Hero 11 , the quality is just insane.
  • A change of clothes: Having a fresh set of clothes makes the boat ride back to Sanur much more pleasant.
  • Snacks and water: Although lunch and water usually are provided on the guided tours, I always pack some snacks and extra water just in case.
  • A small backpack or dry bag : Keeping all your belongings in one place, protected from water, is essential.

My favorite filtered water bottle for travel, backpacking, hiking. LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle.

Bintang Bungalows, close to Crystal Bay, one of the best snorkeling spots on Nusa Penida

If you decide that one day in Nusa Penida is just not enough, I recommend finding a place to stay close to Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay on the west coast. My favorite budget accommodation option is Bintang Bungalows , located right in the middle of the two popular snorkeling spots.

As you can see above, you get your own super cute and highly-rated bungalow with air-conditioning and a semi-outdoor bathroom, and a beautiful pool area right on your doorstep.

If you have a bit more cash to spend, check out Atalaya Villas Nusa Penida . Omg, I have no words. This place is an Instagrammers dream. I wish my bedroom at home looked like that!

Two of the villas boast their own private infinity pool overlooking a sea of palm trees below. The common pool area is just as beautiful with tipi-like day beds and a bar serving up frozen margaritas. Perfect after a day of snorkeling.

“Saw dolphins and turtles on the trip. We went to around 4 -5 places to snorkel. It was beautiful. 3 places had clear visibility and the coral was spectacular. Then on the walking / trekking place we went to see 3 spots that were breathtaking! Kadek our guide was also a great photographer 😌 for the walking part, you should wear comfortable walking footwear. They also picked me up and dropped me off in Canggu. Pick up was at 630am and I got back around 730pm. Prepare for this to be a whole day but worth every second. Now, let’s dive into the unparalleled beauty of Nusa Penida West Tour Attractions

Nusa Penida West Tour Attractions

Angel’s billabong.

This natural infinity pool found in Nusa Penida West has become one of the most Instagrammable spots in Bali. The spot is named after the crystal clear and calm waters which feel like a pool in the middle of the ocean. The rock cliffs that surround the area also make this a fascinating place to enjoy a sun-soaked day in Nusa Penida

Kelingking Beach

aerial view of Nusa Penida West Kelingking cliff Bali day trip to Nusa Penida

One of the most famous and beautiful beaches on the Island, Kelingking Beach’s name means pinkie finger in Indonesian. This beach is renowned for its iconic T-Rex-shaped cliff and turquoise blue waters. It’s a must-see destination on your tour of Nusa Penida West, and the perfect spot for some stunning photographs!

Broken Beach

panoramic view of broken beach nusa penida west on nusa penida west tour

An extraordinary natural wonder, Broken Beach is a testament to the raw and untamed beauty of Nusa Penida. This unique geological formation got its name from the archway that encircles the bay, creating a ‘broken’ effect. The turquoise waters contrast beautifully with the rugged cliffs, making it a perfect spot for awe-inspiring photos. Legend has it that a giant creature was banished here, leaving behind this breathtaking landscape.

Crystal Bay

Things to do in Nusa Penida Crystal Bay Beach on Nusa Penida west tour

The beautiful crystal clear bay of Nusa Penida West is one of the most alluring beaches situated in the area. As the name suggests, Crystal Bay is renowned for its crystal-clear waters that mirror the blue skies. This idyllic beach is surrounded by palm trees and offers a serene spot for relaxation. But the real magic happens beneath the surface. Crystal Bay is a popular spot for snorkelling, with vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. It’s like stepping into a living aquarium!

Snorkelling Spots of Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a snorkeller’s paradise, offering an underwater world teeming with life and colour. From Manta Point where you can swim with majestic manta rays, to Gamat Bay where you’ll find colourful coral gardens, each spot holds its own charm.

Travel Tips For Nusa Penida West Tours

  • Tackle the West and East Side Tours separately: I’ve made a separate blog post for Nusa Penida West and Nusa Penida East tours because its really hard to pack everything into one day- is it possible yes? but if you want to take lots of photos, head down to the beach and feel a bit more relaxed and not be rushed I recommend doing a Nusa Penida West trip and an east Nusa Penida day trip separately .
  • Motion Sickness Medication: Not needed by everyone but a good few people on our Bali/Sanur trip to Nusa Penida had severe motion sickness due to the rough seas and also struggled with motion sickness on our snorkelling trip- it really does get rough on occasions.
  • Bring a change of clothes: For the Tour that involves snorkelling, You’ll head out to the snorkelling stops first, then go onto the island and explore Nusa Penida West island tour attractions. Having a change of clothes and a towel will ensure you enjoy the rest of your tour in comfort.
  • Sun Protection: Nusa Penida is very exposed to the sun, so please bring a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. There is VERY MINIMAL shade at most of the attractions. I actually do not remember any shade on the Nusa Penida West tours, so cover up if you’re sun-sensitive.
  • Comfortable Shoes: We recommend wearing comfortable shoes for this tour as you’ll be doing quite a bit of walking. Flip flops or sandals are good for the beach portions, but some of the terrain is rougher if you’re descending down to Kelingking Beach or walking the circumference of Broken Beach.
  • Waterproof Camera: If you’re looking to capture the days memories, bring a waterproof camera for your snorkelling trip! Alternatively, phones come with great waterproof cases that can help protect them if it rains or while snorkelling/swimming.
  • Bring Cash: There is no ATM on the Island, so make sure you bring enough cash for any souvenirs or food/drinks that you may want to buy as well as tip for your guide or driver.

Nusa Penida West Tour FAQ

Absolutely! Nusa Penida is a beautiful destination and the West side of the island offers incredible attractions, stunning landscapes and unique experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s definitely a place worth exploring if you’re looking for something different from your standard Bali holiday. Read my full post: Is Nusa Penida Worth Visiting?

I recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes for the tour. It’s extremely hot, so lightweight, fast-drying clothes are best. If you’re planning on swimming or snorkelling, make sure to bring your swimsuit and a towel as well. It’s also important to wear sun protection such as sunglasses, hats and sunscreen since Nusa Penida is quite exposed to the sun.

The best time to visit Nusa Penida West or do a Nusa Penida East tour is during the dry months from April to October. During this time, you’re likely to experience clear skies and calmer waters. The wet season runs from November to March and while it can still be enjoyable during these months, the seas tend to be rougher and there’s more chance of rain. We visited during October, and it was still pretty dry. I don’t remember it raining at all actually.

A number of factors will play a role in the price of a Nusa Penida tour namely: Is it a private or join-in/shared tour? Is the one-day trip Nusa Penida tour from Bali or Nusa Penida, Is there included hotel pick up and drop off in Bali, What is included in the day tour package, The nusa penida day trip cost can range between as little as 400 000 IDR (Indonesian Rupiah) to 2 million IDR, Therefore the Nusa Penida tour package does depend on what type of experience you want.

Nusa Penida Day trips are dependent on which side of the island you want to see, the East or the West. I strongly recommend picking one day for each. This is my top pick for a West Nusa Penida Day tour: West Nusa Penida island Tour with Snorkelling , My other best Nusa Penida tour is the 2day 1night Nusa Penida tour

Most tours include a hotel pick/up and drop off in Bali and return boat transfers too. If you’re choosing a Bali Nusa Penida tour without this option: Check out separate fast boat ticket prices from Bali to Nusa Penida here

Yes, you can definitely do this. Nusa Penida is only a 25-minute boat ride away from Nusa Lembongan so it’s possible to make a day trip out of it. Once you arrive at the harbour in Nusa Penida, there are plenty of tour operators and drivers who will tout their services.

Yes, you can do a day trip from Sanur to Nusa Penida. It’s a journey of usually around 1 hour and 10 minutes boat ride but it’s still very doable. We took this route on our first Nusa Penida experience. This is the main way to get to Nusa Penida from Bali.

It really depends on what you’re looking for. Nusa Penida Wast offers a lot of photo-worthy attractions like Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach and Crystal Bay while the Eest side is more relaxed with spectacular views from Diamond and Atuh Beach and the insta-famous Rumah Pohon Treehouse stunning. I definitely recommend doing both as it’s quite hard to pack everything into one day.

We’ve had quite an adventure exploring the best of Nusa Penida West tour, haven’t we? From the majestic Kelingking Beach to the serene natural pool of Angel’s Billabong, every moment has been a testament to the beauty that Indonesia has to offer.

Now, it’s your turn to dive into this experience! Choose from our top three recommended tours and embark on your own journey of discovery.

When you return, sun-kissed and brimming with stories, remember to share your experiences with me! I can’t wait to hear about your adventures in Nusa Penida. So, are you ready to make some memories? Book your tour now and let Nusa Penida’s magic unfold before your eyes.

Nusa Penida Snorkelling Tour

nusa penida snorkeling tour

2 - 3 Hours

Manta Bay, Gamat bay, Crystal Bay

Availability :

Before it was famous for cliff and beach tourism, as it is today, Nusa Penida was famed for its Nusa Penida snorkeling tour . Because Nusa Penida offers various snorkeling and diving tourism spots, diving and snorkeling is a prima donna excursion. Every day, the most popular snorkeling places in Nusa Penida include Manta Bay, Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay, Wall Bay, and GT Point. Aside from the calm flow of sea water, which is uncommon in this position, reaches 10-20 meters during the day and dry season.

One of the highlights of snorkeling in Nusa Penida is seeing manta rays. This fish is most commonly seen in the Manta Bay area, particularly at Broken Beach and Kelingking Beach. Other locations, such as Crystal Bay and others, include coral reefs and tens of thousands of marine creatures in crystal clear sea water. This snorkeling area has been compared as a big aquarium by some of our visitors.

Nusa Penida snorkeling spots

nusa penida snorkeling tour

nusa penida Manta bay

Swimming with manta rays is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that hardly everyone gets. No one can anticipate whether or not manta rays will appear. Come here first thing in the morning because the waves are usually gentler.

Manta rays are pleasant fish with which you can swim at sea level or in the depths of the ocean; unlike sting rays, they do not have a toxic tail.

nusa penida crystal bay

Crystal Bay is known for its crystal clear sea water, stunning coral reefs, and abundant marine life, making it ideal for snorkeling. In addition to snorkeling, the Crystal Bay snorkeling area is also used for diving to see sunfish at a particular depth.

You may snorkel near the beach in addition to using a traditional boat or modern boat; all you have to do is rent a snorkeling gadget from the Crystal shore and swim by yourself in the sea. Be careful since too much chill snorkeling can cause you to pass out after being dragged into the center of the water by the current.

nusa penida gamat bay

For the time being, the best way to snorkel in Gamat Bay is to rent a boat from Toya Pakeh Port; however, land access is difficult because there is no road. It’s great to be here. You must walk through a steep terrain that is difficult to navigate. Gamat Bay is a rocky cliff with a lovely tiny beach that may be seen from the boat. Gamat features a stunning and well-preserved coral reef where notable marine species frequently visit. Gamat turtles and thousands of colorful tiny fish can be seen in Gamat Bay. When there is no current and the sea water recedes, this is the perfect time to snorkel.

nusa penida wall bay

One of the most popular snorkeling places is Wall Point or Wall Bay. These are shallow seas, and you can immediately appreciate the beauty of the coral reef from the top of the boat, especially when you enter the water, where the beauty is even more apparent. Snorkeling here is easier than in other places since the water is shallower and the ocean currents are calmer. Photographers seek to this location for stunning underwater images of coral reefs and hundreds of colorful fish. Those of you who desire to take a picture here will not be dissatisfied with the outcome; it must astound you.

Nusa Penida snorkeling type

Nusa Penida private boat snorkeling

Boat snorkelling is smaller than fastboats to  cross from Sanur to Nusa  Penida. The snorkeling boat can accommodate 10-20 persons. If you want to rent a private boat, please contact us and we will make the necessary arrangements. Boats will be accessible at toya pakeh port or banjar nyuh port at the time you choose, although we recommend snorkeling in the morning rather than the afternoon or evening. Melalinusapenida.com uses the services of Amir boat and free glumpang boat for the price of snorkeling private boat varies based on the number of participants.

Amir Snorkeling

  • IDR 900.000 for 1 person

  • IDR 300.000/person for 3 person

Nusa penida sharing boat snorkeling.

The snorkeling sharing boat departs at 09:00 in the morning, with participants gathering 15 minutes before the departure time. Participants who arrive late will be allowed up to 15 minutes of waiting time. Manta Bay, Gamat Bay, and Crystal Bay were visited, with a snorkeling duration of 2-3 hours. You will return to Banjar Nyuh port after snorkeling. The snorkeling operator will give images taken with GoPro cameras for documentation, which will be sent to each participant Snorkeling. The Bahisnawa boat is used for snorkeling sharing with price is IDR 150.000 per person. Depending on the number of snorkeling participants, a snorkeling tour will be offered at 1 pm if possible.

Snorkelling without a boat at Nusa Penida

Crystal Bay is one of the places where you can go snorkeling without having to utilize a boat; all you have to do is carry or rent snorkeling equipment and go snorkeling in the waters of Crystal Bay. If you don’t know how to swim, you can hire a guide to assist you while snorkeling in Crystal Bay. In addition to Crystal Bay, we recommend snorkeling at Buyuk Beach, where the coral reefs are just as magnificent as those at Crystal Bay. The waves are usually often calm, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Combine Nusa Penida Snorkeling tour with nusa penida island tour

Because the snorkeling places are only one region away from the western nusa penida area, they can only be paired with a nusa penida west tour for a one-day trip to Nusa Penida. It won’t have enough time to get to the latest boat schedule from Nusa Penida back to Sanur if it is required to be coupled with the Nusa Penida East Tour or Nusa Penida Combine Tour. If you choose a nusa penida overnight trip, it’s a completely other scenario; you will have plenty of time to go snorkeling and take island tours without having to worry about running behind schedule.
