NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP – DO IT YOURSELF

Can you do a day trip to Nusa Penida? Absolutely, and this is what the section here below is all about.

If you prefer to visit Nusa Penida Island without a tour, read on to discover 3 different Nusa Penida One Day Trip Itineraries that I recommend.

Or perhaps you plan to spend a few days on the island and want the full scope of all the best things to do, so be sure to check out my Nusa Penida Travel Guide linked below.

DIY ITINERARY #1

Here is an overview of the DIY Nusa Penida One Day Itinerary #1

  • Crystal Bay
  • Angels Billabong

CRYSTAL BAY

Crystal Bay Nusa Penida is a palm tree haven and an awesome snorkeling location on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

Crystal Bay is one of the best beaches to explore and the perfect spot to begin your DIY Nusa Penida trip!

The drive towards Crystal Bay is an experience in itself, passing through local villages and palm tree lined roads, eventually coming to a dead end on the beachfront.

There are a number of beach shack cafes, traditional temples, a coconut palm tree forest, and colorful umbrellas along the shoreline at Crystal Bay, all of which overlook a gorgeous beach cove and a nearby rocky island.

Just offshore, there is a colorful reef system beneath the surface of Crystal Bay Nusa Penida, a very popular spot for snorkeling with all sorts of fish, turtles, and other sea critters.

ANGELS BILLABONG

Angels Billabong is one of Nusa Penida’s most popular attractions.

This natural infinity pool is framed by rock cliffs and hangs out over the ocean and it’s a must-see location on your day trip to Nusa Penida!

The Angels Billabong can be found on the farmost western tip of Nusa Penida’s coastline.

When you arrive at Angel’s Billabong there is a parking lot on the cliffs you will be asked to pay a parking fee of 10,000 IDR.

There are signposts leading the way down the steps to Angel’s Billabong, so you won’t get lost.

The rocks are quite sharp and rugged getting down into the infinity pool at Angels Billabong, but once you step in, the surface of the rocks under the water is smooth and easy to walk on.

Due to its recent popularity, the best time to visit Angels Billabong is early morning to avoid crowds.

BROKEN BEACH

Broken Beach is one of many awesome locations on the island and it is not to be missed on your DIY day trip Nusa Penida.

A naturally carved-out bridge stretches over turquoise waters that flow in and out of the archway, hence the name Broken Beach.

Broken Beach is located right next to Angels Billabong so you can combine these two locations on the same trip.

Although you can’t go swimming at Broken Beach, it is such an unreal setting in itself. The ocean water flows into a natural bowl that is surrounded by towering cliffs.

You can take a panoramic walk all the way around Broken Beach Bali to several different viewpoints offering incredible views of this hole in the cliff.

Perched on the cliffs at Broken Beach you can also find small warungs for a nasi goreng, morning coffee, or a refreshing coconut!

KELINGKING BEACH

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to and it’s the best location for sunset to finish off your one day trip Nusa Penida.

Kelingking Beach, also known as Kelingking Secret Point, is located on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

The reason why Kelingking Beach is such a popular location is that the cliffs form the shape of a T-Rex.

The head of the T-Rex can be seen on the left of the bay and the body and tail wrap around to the right.

Access to Kelingking Beach is possible but explore at your own risk.

There are stairs and railings made out of timber that lead down the spine of Keling King to the beach, though don’t completely rely on this and take your time when descending down to the shoreline.

Kelingking Beach has multiple viewpoints around the edge of the cliffs, offering spectacular views up and down the coastline of Nusa Penida.

Atuh Beach is one of Nusa Penida’s most iconic locations, featuring a large cove with crystalline waters, golden sands, and a coconut palm forest.

Atuh Beach is located on the farmost eastern point of Nusa Penida Island. From the main town of Toya Pakeh, it’s approximately a 45-minute drive to reach Atuh Beach.

Pantai Atuh Beach can be accessed from either the left-hand side or the right-hand side of the cliffs via the concrete steps that are cut into the side of the mountain.

The entrance fee you will have to pay to visit Atuh Beach is 10,000 IDR.

It’s the perfect spot to go for a swim to cool off and beach bum under one of many straw umbrellas that line the shoreline.

If you’re looking for a fun-fuelled couple of hours on your day trip, be sure not to miss Atuh Beach on your itinerary – I guarantee you will enjoy it just as much as I did!

DIAMOND BEACH

Diamond Beach Nusa Penida is hands down the most amazing beach I have ever been to, and that’s saying something!

A glistening white sand beach surrounded by verdant cliffs and turquoise water, Diamond Beach is a hard-to-beat destination and one of the best places to visit.

When you arrive at the car park you will have to pay a small entrance fee of 10,000 IDR to the parking lot attendant sitting in his booth before making your way down the stairs to Diamond Beach.

The way down to Diamond Beach Penida only takes around ten minutes before emerging on the sandy shoreline.

A small warung resides down on Diamond Beach where you can buy cold refreshments and local dishes such as mie goreng and nasi goreng for as little as $3 to $5.

You can also have a turn on the Diamond Beach Nusa Penida swing which is strung up between two coconut palms down by the beach.

RUMAH POHON TREE HOUSE

Ruma Pohon Tree House has become very popular thanks to Instagram and it’s one of the best places to visit on your day trip to Nusa Penida!

At the jump-off point, you will find a small ticket office where you will have to pay 5,000 IDR for the entrance ticket to Rumah Pohon Tree House.

The hike down the ridge takes no more than five or ten minutes to the first viewpoint that overlooks the bay known as Thousand Islands (Pulau Seribu).

Once you are satisfied with marveling at Thousand Island viewpoint, continue the adventure further down the ridge and you will see the Rumah Pohon Tree House on your left-hand side.

To capture the perfect Instagram photo of the Nusa Penida Tree House you can stand on the hill on the right-hand side of the track to get the best angle.

TELETUBBIES HILL

Bukit Teletubbies (Teletubbies Hill) in Nusa Penida is best known for its lush green rolling hills and incredible viewpoints that overlook the entire Nusa Penida Island.

Bukit Teletubbies is located in the southern mountain ranges on Nusa Penida Island.

There are half a dozen different viewpoints at Bukit Teletubbies, and on a clear day, you can see the neighboring island of Lombok and the almighty  Mount Rinjani , the second-largest volcano in Indonesia.

The best way to explore Bukit Teletubbies (Teletubbies Hill Nusa Penida) is on foot. Take a short hike to get a different perspective of this incredible landscape from nearby peaks.

GOA GIRI PUTRI CAVE

Goa Giri Putri Cave is one of Nusa Penida’s most underrated tourist spots but not to be missed.

There is a small car park at the entrance and here you will also be asked to wear a sarong which you can rent for 5,000 IDR and the entrance fee to the temple is 20,000 IDR.

Take the winding staircase midway up the mountain and you’ll be greeted by a man that will bless you with some holy water on the forehead.

I was absolutely jaw-dropped at how insanely huge the Pura Goa Giri Putri cave is, my guess is 300 meters long and 15 meters tall.

We wandered deeper into the Pura Goa Giri Putri cave and stumbled upon a small group of locals sitting in prayer around an altar.

Incense filled the air and we pretty much went unnoticed as we walked around the cave.

Follow the pathway to the end of the Goa Giri Putri cave to a viewpoint of a small village in the lush green mountainside.

You can exit the cave here or head back the same way you came to the parking lot.

DIY ITINERARY #3

Here is an overview of the DIY Nusa Penida One Day Itinerary #3

  • Manta Point Snorkeling
  • Banah Cliff Viewpoint
  • Tembeling Beach & Lagoons
  • Peguyangan Blue Stairs & Waterfall

MANTA POINT SNORKELING

Snorkeling at Manta Point Nusa Penida is one of the most epic experiences you could ever have.

These underwater giants are incredibly humble and to be able to swim with them is a moment you will never forget!

I recommend booking your Manta Point snorkeling tour the day before to secure your spot on the boat. The tour starts between 7:00 am – 8:00 am and finishes around 12:00 pm.

The tour includes all snorkeling equipment and it will stop at three different snorkeling sites – Manta Point, Toya Pakeh Wall, and Crystal Bay.

These majestic creatures are absolutely incredible! They glide effortlessly through the ocean and are really friendly to swim with.

The manta rays at Manta Point can be quite intimidating to begin with due to their body size of up to 5 meters, though you will soon realize they are harmless, humble giants.

Snorkeling at Manta Point is the best way to begin your DIY Nusa Penida trip!

BANAH CLIFF VIEWPOINT

Banah Cliff Nusa is one of the best viewpoints along the southwest coastline of Nusa Penida Island!

There are not just not one but two incredible viewpoints at Banah Cliff.

At the jump-off point to the right is the panoramic view and to the left is the official Banah Cliff.

The panoramic viewpoint at Banah Cliff Nusa Penida faces west and offers extreme views of surrounding cliffs, perched high above the ocean.

On a clear day, you can actually see the tail of the T-Rex at Keling King Beach.

Be very careful when taking photos at Banah Cliff as there is no safety barrier to protect you from falling hundreds of feet to the ground. Know your limits.

The other viewpoint at Banah Cliff faces east and offers an awesome viewpoint of an arched rock island just off the coastline. Again, please watch your step along these rocky cliffs.

TEMBELING BEACH & LAGOONS

Tembeling features a number of cool things to see including pristine white sand beaches, tropical rainforests, natural lagoons, hidden caves, and cliff-jumping spots.

The main attraction at Tembeling Nusa Penida is the freshwater blue lagoon nestled in the Tembeling Forest.

This freshwater natural pool is the perfect spot for a swim on the way down to Tembeling Beach.

You can also discover the hidden cave and secret beach just a short 2-minute walk from the blue lagoon through the Tembeling Forest.

There is also a freshwater jacuzzi pool that the locals have creatively built on the edge of the cliffs.

And of course, there’s Tembeling Beach where a number of tidal pools can be found to take a dip but swimming in the waves here is not recommended.

PEGUYANGAN BLUE STAIRS & WATERFALL

Last but not least on your DIY Nusa Penida trip, the ultimate adventure awaits at Peguyangan Waterfall and the Instafamous Blue Stairs.

At the jump-off point for Peguyanngan Waterfall, you will have to pay a small parking fee of 5,000 IDR.

There are 750 blue stairs that are impressively constructed into the side of the cliff giving access to Peguyangan Waterfall.

There are several viewpoints that make for great photo opportunities as you make your way down to Peguyangan Waterfall.

After a 20-minute hike down the blue stairs, you’ll arrive at the sacred water temple that has four waterspouts.

The waterfall itself is not your common 50-meter meter waterfall, like those you will find in  Bali , but rather a waterspout between a crack in a rock where crystal clear water flows out into tiered rock pools and over the cliff edge into the ocean.

NUSA PENIDA ISLAND – FAQ

Here are some quick answers to the most frequently asked questions from first-time visitors.

HOW TO GET TO NUSA PENIDA?

Bali to nusa penida:.

Fast Boats operate daily to Nusa Penida from Sanur Harbor in Southeast Bali. You can book the fast boat online  in advance to guarantee the lowest price.

The fast boat ticket to the Nusa Penida also includes a hotel pick-up from your accommodation in Bali and a drop-off directly to the pier at Sanur Beach Port.

The boat trip takes approximately 45 minutes from Bali to Nusa Penida Island.

NUSA LEMBONGAN TO NUSA PENIDA:

You can also take a boat to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan if you happen to be exploring this island first.

A boat from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida will cost you around 50,000 IDR.

You can organize the boat via your accommodation on Nusa Lembongan or simply head to the main beach port on Lembongan Island and ask one of the boat companies located down on the beachfront.

Alternatively, you can book a Nusa Penida day trip from Nusa Lembongan, and I’ll tell you more in the following sections.

nusa penida boat 2

HOW TO GET AROUND NUSA PENIDA?

Nusa Penida is quite a large island and it can take up to one hour to get from one side of the island to the other.

The best mode of transport to visit all the tourist spots in Nusa Penida is by scooter.

When you arrive at Toya Pakeh harbor in Nusa Penida there are a number of scooter rental shops on the beachfront that will be able to sort you out with some wheels.

I paid 70,000 IDR per day for a scooter rental that came with a full tank of gas so you can expect to pay something around this price.

Be sure to get a helmet as an extra precaution for riding on the roads in Nusa Penida as they are not very well maintained.

CAN YOU TAKE A NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM ULUWATU?

The ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida departs from Sanur Port , which is in Denpasar, and you’ll have to take a taxi to get there.

However, when joining a day trip to Nusa Penida , transportation is included and you can let the guide know where your hotel is, and they will pick you up, which is so convenient.

This is the best option when it comes to taking a Uluwatu to Nusa Penida day trip.

The same applies to Nusa Dua to Nusa Penida day trip.

COST OF A NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP

The cost of a Nusa Penida 1 day trip from Bali depends on the option you go for – Let me clarify here below.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP

A day trip around Nusa Penida (whether you choose the Nusa Penida West or Nusa Penida East tour) will cost you about $35 per person, including transportation and the tour guide.

The catch? These tours start in Nusa Penida, so you’ll have to get there from Bali on your own and pay the ferry tickets.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM BALI

On the other hand, when booking an All-inclusive Nusa Penida day trip from Sanur, you can expect to pay around $100 per person.

While this is more expensive, it includes the ferry ticket from Bali and back, lunch, and the entrance fees to all attractions, making it much more worth it if you ask me!

Click here below to see this day trip to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM LEMBONGAN

Nusa Penida day trips from Lembongan cost about $37 per person, including transfers from Lembongan, snorkeling sessions, and a mangrove trip.

Note that, usually, Nusa Penida tours from Lembongan do not include any sightseeing but rather snorkeling only, so keep that in mind.

NUSA PENIDA TOURS (Sanur) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

How to Take the Perfect Nusa Penida Day Trip from Bali

If you’re traveling to Indonesia soon, the chances are high that a Nusa Penida day trip from Bali is on your itinerary! And for good reason.

Thanks to its wild nature , incredibly scenic viewpoints , pristine white-sand beaches , and epic diving and snorkeling , Nusa Penida (or Penida Island) quickly became Bali’s new “it” destination.

(Well, really, all the thanks goes to Instagram.)

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida - one of the things you must see on a day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali!

When I first visited Nusa Penida in 2017, there was hardly anyone there. This place was totally under-the-radar and ripe for wild adventure.

A secret no longer, it’s safe to say that Nusa Penida is a lot more crowded these days.

Roads have been paved (somewhat). The Bali-style cafés, traditional warungs, hotels, and homestays that we all love have set up shop. And it seems like every scenic viewpoint has turned into an official Instagram photoshoot location – with props and all.

You can even book yourself a guided Nusa Penida Instagram Tour …

A beautiful aerial view of Nusa Penida's azure waters and green coky cliffs

That said, Nusa Penida became Insta-famous for a reason. It is beyond beautiful.

The perfect beaches, rugged and steep cliffs, lush forests, rock formations, and other natural wonders are awe-inspiring. The lively coral reefs also make it a world-class snorkeling and scuba diving destination.

This island is a true gem. It’s a paradise well worth day-tripping for.

And if you know where to go, you can still have the best beaches all to yourself.

If you want to take a day trip to Nusa Penida, you’re in the right place. Whether you choose a guided tour or decide to go on your own, this guide includes everything you need to know for an awesome day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali.

Sunrise in Nusa Penida, Indonesia with boats floating

If you’re trying to decide between a day trip to Nusa Penida or an overnight stay, there’s no wrong answer. It just comes down to how much time you have in Bali.

With only one day in Nusa Penida, you’ll have enough time to visit the most beautiful beaches and lookouts and go snorkeling at spots like Crystal Bay and Manta Point.

But if you have extra time, you won’t regret staying for 1-2 nights on the island! Rather than rushing through it all, you’ll have time to soak in the tranquil Nusa Penida vibes and views – and spend more time in the underwater world too! You can even learn to scuba dive or take a freediving course !

If you decide to stay overnight, here’s my favorite website for finding the best deals on Nusa Penida accommodations – from luxury resorts and Balinese villas, to traditional homestays and bungalows. Free cancellation is usually included, so you can book in advance with confidence . Remember: the best places in Nusa Penida sell out well in advance in the high season! Find my top accommodation recommendations are toward the bottom of this post!

Palm trees on the island of Nusa Penida

When I went to Nusa Penida for the first time, I took a private guided day trip. And I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again! My tour guide took me in a 4X4 to all of the best lookouts and beaches, and then we boarded a boat to snorkel in Crystal Bay and Manta Point. The experience was epic and totally stress-free.

If you’d like to take a guided day trip from Bali to Nusa Penida, here are the three best options:

  • Bali Nusa Penida West Private Tour – All Inclusive: This tour includes door-to-door transportation from your hotel in Bali. Talk about easy! Once you arrive on the island, you’ll explore the west side of Nusa Penida, including Angel’s Billabong , Broken Beach , Kelingking Beach , and Crystal Bay . Click here to book it!
  • Bali East Nusa Penida Private Tour – All Inclusive: If you want to get off the beaten path , choose this tour. After you disembark the fast boat in Nusa Penida, you’ll explore the east (and lesser visited!) side of the island. You’ll explore Atuh Beach , Diamond Beach , Tree House Molenteng (Rumah Pohon Molenteng), and Teletubbies Hill . This tour also includes door-to-door transportation from your hotel in Bali. Click here to book it!
  • Nusa Penida Snorkeling Adventure (Private & All-Inclusive): If your main goal is to experience Nusa Penida’s incredible snorkeling, this tour is for you. You’ll snorkel at four of the island’s best snorkeling spots, then check out Kelingking Beach and Crystal Bay. Pick-up and drop-off from your Bali hotel are included. Click here to book it!

How to Get to Nusa Penida: Taking the Fast Boat from Sanur Port

Want to take a Nusa Penida day trip on your own?

From Bali, getting to Nusa Penida is easy enough , but in true Bali fashion, it’s also a little chaotic. (If you’re taking one of the guided tours above, no worries! Your guide will pick you up from your Bali hotel and handle all of the logistics for you.)

To get to Nusa Penida, you’ll need to arrive at the Sanur Harbor and purchase tickets for the fast-service ferry (fast boat) to Nusa Penida. This fast boat ride takes about 30 minutes and costs roughly 175,000 IDR (about $11 USD) for a one-way journey. This varies slightly depending on the company you choose.

To maximize your time on Nusa Penida, take one of the first ferries to the island. Your best bet will be to arrive at the Sanur Harbor at 7:30 AM. Then, navigate your way through the sea of people to the Mola-Mola Express ticket counter and purchase tickets for the 8:10 AM fast boat.

If Mola-Mola is sold out, then you can get the 9:00 AM fast boat with Maruti Express , or try visiting another company’s ticket counter.

While at the ticket counter, you should also book your ticket back to Bali. Depending on which fast boat provider you choose, you will return between 2:30 and 5 PM. Mola-Mola leaves Nusa Penida at 4:45 PM. Maruti Express leaves at 2:30 PM (which is quite early, so I wouldn’t choose this option).

You can also book your fast boat online ahead of time. Click here to book your tickets now!

*This information was last updated in January 2023.

Once you have your tickets, you’ll wait to board your fast boat – but don’t expect the norm!

Instead of boarding from a dock, you will wade through the water and clamber aboard the fast boat. At the very least, you will get wet. But if there are big waves, then prepare to get completely soaked – just like I did! For this reason, I highly recommend wearing thin, quick-dry clothing and using a waterproof drybag   to make sure all of your belongings stay dry.

After 30 minutes of boating – with Asian pop and electric dance music blaring (the sign that your adventure has officially begun) – you will arrive in Nusa Penida!

Don’t feel like dealing with logistics? I don’t blame you. Simply book this top-rated day tour to Nusa Penida and allow your guide to take care of it all for you. Click here to see the best day trips to Nusa Penida.

If you are traveling to Bali, Indonesia, then put the island of Nusa Penida on your radar. This rustic and incredibly beautiful island has somehow gone unnoticed for decades, and it currently resembles what Bali was 40 years ago: pure and pristine island paradise. This travel guide details how you can take a day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali. Between how to get there and how to get around, to what to do and see, this post includes everything you need to know for a successful trip to Nusa Penida!

How to Get Around Nusa Penida

Getting around Nusa Penida is a challenge, whether you hire a driver or rent your own motorbike. Since Nusa Penida is mostly undeveloped and the rainy season is intense, the roads are in pretty terrible condition.

While in Nusa Penida, we had our own van and a driver, and I really can’t tell you of a more uncomfortable or slow car ride. The entire way, we were thrown about the inside of the car as we thudded into one pothole after another. My face slammed into the window at least twice – seriously. But at least we had seat belts! That’s just the way it is here!

Your easiest option is to book a guided tour , which includes all of your transportation. If you want to design your own day trip and charter a private driver, then you can click here to book a private driver .

Alternatively, when you arrive at the Nusa Penida harbor, you should be able to find a local driver to take you around the island for around 600,000 IDR (or $40 USD).

Dirt road in Nusa Penida

Contrary to driving a car, renting your own scooter or motorbike is the best way to explore Nusa Penida.

Biking will allow you to travel much faster, pass through narrow roads with ease, and avoid potholes. You will also be able to stop wherever you please, rather than having to follow a set itinerary.

You should be able to rent a scooter for around 100,000 IDR (or $7 USD) for the entire day. You can also avoid the hassle and click here to book your rental scooter online .

Another potentially safer option is to rent a motorbike and hire the owner to drive it for you, meanwhile, you ride on the back. This option will cost you double.

Note: This option is only for you if you have significant experience operating a motorbike! Do NOT overestimate your abilities, these roads are not friendly! And make sure to wear a helmet. Many tourists who rent bikes on Nusa Penida either crash or get stuck in the rough terrain.

If you’re wondering if walking around the island is an option, the answer is no . You won’t get very far on Nusa Penida on foot because the landscape is simply too unforgiving, and the island is much too large.

When it comes to getting around Nusa Penida, you’ll have to pick your poison: car or scooter!

Getting around Nusa Penida is a challenge, to say the least. Want someone to arrange transportation for you? Simply book a day tour instead.

A stunning beach in Nusa Penida - one of the things you must see on a day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali!

What to Do on Nusa Penida (Penida Island)

Nusa Penida is still somewhat undeveloped (compared to Bali) so this guide will not include any must-visit restaurants, beach clubs, or resorts…

What you will find on this island, however, are endless incredible viewpoints (and Instagram photo ops, ugh), naturally beautiful scenes, and outdoor activities galore. Nusa Penida truly is an adventure lovers’ paradise.

Note: If you only have one day on Nusa Penida, you won’t be able to fit all of these activities in. So start by choosing one side of the island (West or East) and then create a list of your must-dos and must-sees!

Diving with manta rays in Nusa Penida - one of the things you must see on a day tour to Nusa Penida from Bali!

The reefs surrounding Nusa Penida are full of life and color, making this island one of Indonesia’s best snorkeling destinations.

In one day of snorkeling, it’s not uncommon to see whale sharks and sea turtles, plus thousands of vibrant fish swimming through the lively coral reefs. You will also have the opportunity to swim with the island’s many resident manta rays! On a calm day, you can even see them swimming as you gaze down from the island’s many steep cliffs.

Here are some of the best snorkeling spots to check out:

  • Crystal Bay
  • Manta Point

If you want to take a guided snorkeling day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali (roundtrip hotel transportation included), then go with this Nusa Penida Snorkeling Adventure (Private & All-Inclusive) . If you’re already on the island, then go with this Snorkeling and Freediving Trip around Nusa Penida . These tour operators provide snorkeling equipment.

nusa penida tour from sanur

As mentioned, Nusa Penida is world-renowned for its incredible scuba diving and freediving . While diving on the island, you’re sure to see massive manta rays, turtles, and the gigantic sunfish (Mola Mola), to name a few.

If you’re new to diving and want to learn, consider traveling to the island on your own (without a tour) and then joining one of these diving tours/courses!

  • Nusa Penida Discover Scuba Diving Program
  • Try Freediving on Nusa Penida
  • 3-Day Freediving Level 1 Course

Scuba diving off the coast of Bali in Nusa Penida - one of the things you must see on a day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali!

If you’re already scuba certified, then you should obviously make sure to go scuba diving.

Here are the top dive trips to consider while on the island!

  • Nusa Penida Two Dives Trip
  • Nusa Penida Three Dives Trip

View of Kelingking Beach

Kelingking Beach is a viewpoint you can’t miss during your day trip to Nusa Penida – without doubt, it’s one of the most breathtaking places I have ever seen.

Between those limestone cliffs, that perfectly soft white sand, the island’s abundant greenery, and those endless ocean blues, I really can’t think of a more naturally beautiful vista.

If you’re brave enough, then you can make the treacherous climb down to the sand. Though you can’t swim in the ocean (the current is way too strong), you can at least dip your toes in the water, snap some photos, and enjoy the views!

Just make sure you have plenty of water because the trek back up will not be easy.

Broken Beach in Nusa Penida - one of the things you must see on a day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali!

Just a short drive from Kelingking Beach, you will find Broken Beach – another must-see during your day trip to Nusa Penida!

This natural arch and rock pool is absolutely stunning, and if you ask me, it’s the perfect view to enjoy a little picnic and an ice-cold Bintang!

Angel's Billabong on Penida Island - a must see on a day tour to Penida Island

Just down a footpath from Broken Beach, you’ll find Angel’s Billabong, a natural infinity pool that you can swim in!

This rock pool, which is made up of jagged volcanic rock, is constantly filled with violent splashes of seawater. (If you stand near the edge, you’re sure to get soaked.) But when the water settles, Angel’s Billabong shows off 50 shades of beautiful blue, and you will simply stand there, gawking, in awe of it all.

As you make your way over to Angel’s Billabong, be very careful of the sharp rocks, and don’t get too close to the edge!

As with everywhere on the island, it’s best to arrive early, first thing in the morning, to avoid crowds.

Snorkeling in Crystal Bay

Many say that Crystal Bay is the most beautiful beach on Nusa Penida – and they very well could be right!

With insanely crystal-clear waters, a peaceful atmosphere, clean, white sand, and excellent snorkeling and diving, Crystal Bay is a must-visit during your day trip to Nusa Penida!

I’m not 100% sure, but I think that I must’ve seen at least 10,000 fish while snorkeling in beautiful Crystal Bay. It was pretty spectacular.

It’s generally safe to swim here, yay!

For a lovely hike through old-growth forest, followed by natural rock pool swimming and beach hangs, the Tembeling Beach and Tembeling Forest are must-visits!

You can’t really swim at Tembeling Beach, but it sure is beautiful.

Time for some Balinese culture, to break up your time in the sun.

Visit the Goa Giri Putri for a mystifying succession of Balinese temples, built into a cave! Many Balinese travel from Bali to this temple to complete a “cleansing” or “purification” ritual with the priests at each of the five temples in the cave.

While you’re here, put on a sarong, walk through slowly, and take in the experience. Watch the ceremony unfold, or even better, participate.

Atuh Beach in Nusa Penida

On the Nusa Penida’s east side, you’ll find two of the most beautiful beaches you can imagine: Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach.

Atuh Beach features a magnificent white sandy cove, hugged by rocky cliffs. There are plenty of stairs leading down to the beach (so the story goes in Nusa Penida!), but when the tide is high, you can swim here with caution; the waves and currents are strong and sharp reef below.

You’ll also find some local warungs serving local food and umbrellas to rent here.

The perfect place for a sunny beach day without too many crowds!

Diamond Beach on Penida Island

Diamond Beach is absolutely magical and the water is crystal clear… But the climb up/down is challenging – and probably not for you if you’re scared of heights!

The cliffs at Diamond Beach cast shadows in the afternoons, so make sure to get here early.

Watching the sunrise from either of these beaches will not disappoint.

Viewpoint on the island of Penida

You may have seen photos of the Rumah Pohon Tree House accommodation before on Instagram. You’ll find the treehouses here, at the stunning Thousand Islands Viewpoint.

Here, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and a handful of small rocky islands. It’s breathtaking.

If you can, come here early to watch the sunrise (it’s worth it!) and beat the crowds.

Note: You have to pay to take a photo from/in front of a treehouse (I’ll leave it up to you to decide if it’s worth it). You can also stay overnight in these rustic treehouses .

Suwehan Beach in Nusa Penida - one of the best and least crowded beaches to visit during a Nusa Penida Day Trip

I saved the best for last!

Suwehan Beach is not a typical day trip stop, meaning that, if you go here, you’ll likely have this entire pristine, secluded beach to yourself. It’s unknown, uncrowded, the island’s best-kept secret! You’re welcome.

It takes a little more effort to get here, and there are plenty of stairs to get down to the beach, but it’s worth it to soak up Nusa Penida’s beauty in peace and quiet.

The best time to visit is in the morning (to avoid any crowds) during low tide (so that the sandy beach is actually there).

A beautiful scene from the sand on Kelingking Beach on a sunny day

Where to Stay in Nusa Penida

As you can tell, there’s a lot to see and do on the island. If you have time to turn your day trip to Nusa Penida into a multi-day exploration, you should!

Most people only day trip to Nusa Penida, but it’s a good idea to stay, discover more, swim more, and dive deeper! Trust me, after spending only one day on Nusa Penida, you won’t be ready to go back to Bali.

Just like on Bali, even the most luxurious places to stay are super affordable, so why not splash out a little?

Here are the best places to stay in Nusa Penida for a night or two in Nusa Penida.

  • Penida Bambu Green Suites : If you want the most magical stay imaginable , this is your place. Think luxe guest rooms with magnificent jungle views, lush gardens, relaxing swimming pools, traditional flower baths, sublime massages, and the most romantic atmosphere. Heaven on Nusa Penida. Click here to book it.
  • A t al aya Villas Nusa Penida : Spacious boho-chic guest rooms, warm Balinese hospitality, jungle views, and a beautiful infinity pool are all you need while on the island. Click here to book it.
  • Kompyang Cottage : Without a doubt, the Kompyang Cottage is the best place to stay on Nusa Penida! Located on the beach, in a quiet, local area of the island, this guesthouse offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. Not to mention, the service, food, guest rooms, and ocean views are all stellar. Click here to book it.
  • Akusara Jungle Resort And Spa : Grand Bali villa vibes, ocean views, jungle sounds, a lovely pool, and traditional Balinese food make staying here a treat. Click here to book it.
  • Bagia Bungalows : When it comes to budget accommodation on Nusa Penida, it doesn’t get better than this. You’ll love the central location, comfortable bungalows, great views, and friendly hospitality here. Click here to book it.

Next time I visit Nusa Penida, I’ll plan to stay at least three nights. If you can fit it into your Bali itinerary , then I suggest you do the same!

Still looking? Here’s my favorite website for finding the best deals on Nusa Penida accommodations – from luxury resorts and Balinese villas, to traditional homestays and bungalows. Free cancellation is usually included, so you can book in advance with confidence . Remember: the best places in Nusa Penida sell out well in advance in the high season!

Maddy on the volcanic rocks

For your day trip to Nusa Penida, there are a few items I recommend bringing no matter what!

You’ll need:

  • A waterproof backpack for snorkeling, exploring beaches, and wading in and out of the fast boat
  • A lightweight Turkish towel for drying off after you swim and snorkel
  • Natural, reef-safe sunscreen   to protect the precious reef systems and your skin
  • Natural, eco-friendly bug repellant to keep the mosquitoes away, while protecting the island’s sensitive ecosystems from toxic chemicals
  • Closed-toe walking shoes because the island’s volcanic rock is sharp and treacherous and the dirt roads are uneven
  • Snacks and a water bottle  because there aren’t many places to fuel up on the island while adventuring
  • Plenty of rupiah because you won’t find many ATMs on the island
  • A swimsuit because the beaches are incredible and you will want to swim and snorkel (where safe; the currents, waves, and reefs are dangerous at certain beaches)
  • Sunglasses and a hat to block the sun

Street in Nusa Penida

If you have the chance to take a day trip to Nusa Penida , jump at it. Nusa Penida may be an unspoiled island paradise now, but I promise it won’t stay that way for much longer.

Every day, more and more Bali tourists learn about this gem of an island, and every day, more and more people make plans to visit it. If you want to experience the magic of Bali from 40 years ago, then Nusa Penida is your place.

And if you want to snorkel, dive, explore boundlessly, discover breathtaking views, and experience a place as free from tourism as can be, then you must go to Nusa Penida – as soon as possible!

And if you want someone to arrange all of this for you, simply book this day tour instead. Click here to see the best Nusa Penida day tours.

Thank you for this awesome blogpost. I am visiting Bali in June 2018 and was planning a day trip to Nusa Lebongang, but I will be taking your advice and do Nusa Penida instead, squeezing it in somehow as I would like to see the most of Bali. Im wondering now if I should rather take Gili Islands out of my itinerary? I only have 13 days in Bali and there seems to be so much to do… I am convinced that this first trip to Bali would be one of many many more…

Yes, definitely do Nusa Penida over Nusa Lembongan! It will be a much more rewarding experience!

Also, I think you’re right to save Gili for another trip to Bali. There’s so much to do/see on Bali itself. We are heading back to Bali again this summer for the third time, and it’ll only be our first time to Gili. We are super excited for this trip to Bali (two weeks) and Gili (one week), but we just couldn’t justify taking away any time from Bali on previous trips!!

Wow! This is indeed very helpful. We are planning to go here this May. If I may just ask, can I bring my 1 year old baby here? I really want to visit Nusa Penida and I think this will be the highlight of our Bali Adventure. I’m just concerned if it is possible for us (7 adults) to bring my 1.5 yr old son.

Thank you. :)

I don’t really want to throw around the word favorite any more than I already have, but I think I have to just once more. Nusa Lembongan is one of my favorite places in the whole wide world and has always been my little haven for peace and quiet in Indonesia. However, on my last visit in January, it was clear that mass development has caught up to the little island, which I had feared for many years.

Hi, i have plan to go there next week. your blog convince me to go alone, without tour companies. \m/

based on your experience, if i want to snorkel there, are they had some local companies to provide to some snorkel point?

Great blog post… very informative!

I am planning to do a day trip to Nusa Penida and I was wondering which you would recommend; getting a bike and a driver (as I dont trust myself on a bike!) or going on a tour? Ideally I would like to go by myself but I would like to do snorkelling and land and therefore dont know whether a tour is easier? Although they all seem quite expensive! Thank you

This is very informative.

We are a group of 8 and we have booked our Bali Tour for 4 days. We are planning to visit Nusa Penida in one of those days for a Day Tour. How many people are allowed in a van for that 530,000 rupiahs? Also, on the recommended places to go, do we have to pay for entrance fees or any environmental fee?

Thank you for this great information! Is it easy enough to rent snorkeling gear once we are there? Or should we rent it and bring it with us? Thank you :)

The prices seem really low based on my internet searches. Are they correct and current in November 2019? Thanks!

Hey Mike, Booking ferries etc. will always be more expensive online. Your haggling skills are also a factor to consider (as far as drivers, motor bikes, etc. go). However, I’ve just updated prices, as they have gone up slightly, but not too much. Thank you for the nudge :)

nusa penida tour from sanur

Day 1 Go to Nusa Penida and Beaches Exploration

Standby in the Meeting Point at Sanur

Go to Sanur because it is the meeting point of this tour. Ensure that you are in the location before 07.15 AM. Our team will go there to pick you up at the meeting point to go to Nusa Penida. You are about to ride a fast boat to Nusa Penida Island. Because of that, the tour guide will help you to check the ticket to go to the boat. The process often takes 30 minutes.

Go to Nusa Penida Island by Riding a Fast Boat

The fast boat will go from Sanur beach to Nusa Penida at 08.00 AM. You are about to ride this fast boat for around 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. The length of the trip depends on the boat you take. The Marlin Fast Boat is faster than the Golden Queen Fast Boat.

Our driver is ready on the dock of Nusa Penida. He will guide you to explore all destinations you should visit while on this island. The trip from the dock to the next location is around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Exploring Angle’s Tree, Angle’s Billabong, and Broken Beach

It is an exciting time when you are about to roam the three most popular destinations, which are Angle’s Tree, Angle’s Billabong, and Broken Beach. Besides enjoying the fantastic scenery and atmosphere on Angle’s Billabong, you can also witness a dead tree but it is still sturdy today.

It is the reason why this tree is known as Angle’s tree. Broken Beach has a unique shape with a wonderful natural view. Our driver gives you 2 hours to explore all the spots, feel the fresh air and ambiance, and capture the most interesting objects or moments there.

Having Lunch and Explore Kelingking Beach and Paluang Cliff

Then, recharge your energy and stamina by having your launch at noon. You have 1 hour to take a rest and finish your lunch. At 1.00 p.m. you will continue this Nusa Penida 2 Days 1 Night and Sunrise tour to Kelingking Beach and Paluang Cliff.

The rocky area around Kelingking Beach looks so spectacular. Imagine that it is made by mother nature without the touch of human beings. The shape looks like a dinosaur bone. That’s why Kelingking Beach is also known as T-Rex Bay.

Paluang cliff is near Kelingking Beach. The location is on the south of this beach. It is the place where you can capture the beauty of Kelingking Beach on the left side. Bring your camera because there will be a lot of photo spots there.

Check-In at the Hotel

Kelingking Beach and Paluang Cliff are the last destinations on the 1 day of Nusa Penida 2 Days 1 Night and Sunrise tour. Our driver and tour guide will deliver you to the hotel to check in. Take a rest while checking the photos or videos you have made today. Indeed, be ready for the second day.

Day 2 Finding a Sunrise at Raja Lima

Pick You Up at the Hotel

Just like the name of the tour, it is time for you to find sunrise. We will bring you to a specific place known as Raja Lima to see the sunrise. Because we want to catch the sunrise, our driver will pick you up at 05.00 a.m. Ensure that you are ready and on time. Our driver will wait for you up to 05.15 a.m. and not more than that otherwise you will lose the sunrise.

Go to Raja Lima and RumahPohonMoleteng

It takes around 45 minutes from your hotel to Raja Lima. It means you will be there at 06.00 a.m. Raja Lima is also popular because of its RumahPohonMoleteng or Moleteng Tree House. The location is near Atuh Beach.

Due to their location and design, Raja Lima and RumahPohonMoleteng are considered the best sunrise viewpoint in Bali. Indeed, you are not only enjoying the spectacular sunrise in this location but also the wonderful scenery and atmosphere in the morning. Our driver or tour guide lets you enjoy this area up to 08.30 a.m.

Having Breakfast and Check Out

Then, we will bring you back to the hotel for breakfast and check out. You have to leave the hotel at 11.00 a.m. to continue this Nusa Penida 2 Days 1 Night and Sunrise tour. During the trip to the next destinations, we will stop for lunch.

Exploring Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach

Now, you are ready to explore two beaches, which are Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach. These two beaches are in the same location. Atuh beach is worth it to visit because of its white sand. On the other hand, Diamond Beach offers extremely beautiful cliffs just like diamonds.

You should pass through a stone stair to go to the beach and enjoy the white sand. Some travelers use this location as one of the best photo spots in Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach. We scheduled you to arrive in Diamond Beach around 1.00 p.m.

You have an hour and 30 minutes to enjoy this beach and take as many photos as you want. Then, you will go to Atuh Beach at 2.30 p.m. Our tour guide will also give you an hour and 15 minutes for you to enjoy the ambiance of Atuh Beach. Remember to take as many pictures or videos as you want and share them with your friends or family members. You have to leave the area before 4.00 p.m.

Ride a Fast Boat to Sanur Harbor

Be ready on the dock at 4.00 p.m. because the fast boat that will bring you to Sanur Harbor is coming. That’s it! You have to say goodbye to Nusa Penida Island and bring back all the good memories. The trip to Sanur Harbor takes 45 minutes.

End of Nusa Penida 2 Days 1 Night and Sunrise Tour

Your Nusa Penida 2 Days 1 Night and Sunrise tour ended here. We hope that you get anything you want from this tour. Bring your memorable moments, best photos, and fascinating videos from Nusa Penida home.

Share it with your friends and family members to let them know there is a wonderful island in Bali they should visit someday. Indeed, we will wait for you for the next visit to Nusa Penida.

It is not a farewell goodbye because you will miss visiting Nusa Penida again to feel the fresh air, natural vibe, and great ambiance. Our tour is always ready to help you to enjoy your time in Nusa Penida.

How to get to the Nusa Islands

There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:

  • Book your ticket:   Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go . You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
  • Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook .
  • Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.

While there are lots of things to do in Sanur, there is so much to see once you venture out into the countryside of Bali.

You don’t have to stay on land either as some of the best Bali boat trips leave from the shores of Sanur. You can easily do a day trip from Sanur to the outer islands of Nusa Lembongan , Nusa Penida , Nusa Ceningan and also the Gili Islands.

Sanur Bali Day Tours

You can organise your own Bali day trips, join Bali day tours from group travel or hire your own Bali tour guide .

If you haven’t been to Sanur or other places in Bali before, you can’t help but come across a private driver. They are renowned for their “transport, transport” as you walk past them in the street.

They will take you anywhere you want to go in Bali. So you can design your own Bali private tour specifically to what you would like to see and do throughout Bali.

We are here to help and show you some of the things to do in Bali once you’ve worked out what to do in Sanur.

Things to see on your Sanur Bali Day tours

Snorkeling Bali

Snorkeling Sanur is fairly non-existent as Sanur beach and the bay is protected by a reef. The sandy bottom of the bay leaves nothing to see but a whole lot of sand and seagrass.

You’ll have to venture up the coast to see the best snorkeling in Bali or out to one of the islands off Sanur.

Again you can hire a driver and do your own thing or you can take a Bali snorkeling tour on one of the boats heading out to the islands.

nusa penida tour from sanur

Snorkeling Nusa Penida

For this day trip from Sanur, you’ll need to catch a fast boat to Nusa Penida. The fast boat trip from Sanur to Nusa Penida will take approximately 45 minutes.

You can snorkel and swim with Manta Rays at Manta Bay (weather permitting). Other snorkeling spots on Penida are Cyrstal Bay and Mangrove Point. These are 3 of the best snorkeling spots on the island.

On this day trip, you can also go kayaking, try stand-up paddleboarding and or hire a private gondola. The day trip also includes an Indonesian buffet for lunch and free pickup from your Sanur hotel. If you are not staying in Sanur they also pick you up from Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Sanur and Canggu. Ubud pickups are an extra 330,000 rp return.

Places to snorkel Nusa Penida

Lembongan Snorkeling

Snorkeling tours to Nusa Lembongan also leave from Sanur Harbour.

On this tour, you’ll also visit Gamut Bay although the exact locations are decided on the day. This is due to the swell, water conditions and weather. Trust me you won’t want to snorkeling in any swells or low visibility water. It’s best left up to the experts on the day.

Crossing time from Sanur to Lembongan is approximately 30 minutes. The tour company has the same deal for Lembongan as they do for Penida. Free pickups and drop back to your accommodation. A buffet lunch is also included.

Nusa Penida Tour

A Nusa Penida day trip is one of the most popular day trips from Bali. It’s an easy and fun day to get away from mainland Bali.

All you need to do is be ready in your hotel lobby by the specified time. A driver will pick you up and drop you at Sanur Harbour where a short 45-minute fast boat ride will take you to Nusa Penida.

If you are prone to motion sickness or travel sickness keep an eye on the weather. Take appropriate precautions that suit you. I’ve written about travel and motion sickness here and what measures you can take.

I’ve mentioned this as although the bay between Sanur and Penida is flat and protected by ocean swells it can be rough. Personally, I’ve never experienced large swells travelling between islands. However, it does become rough on occasion.

As previously mentioned, you can take a snorkeling tour Nusa Penida or there is also a private full-day tour to Nusa Penida too.

On the private tour, you’ll land at Toyapakeh, visit Kelingking Beach, Pasih Uug (Broken Beach) and the natural pool of Angel’s Billabong.

There is also an option for a drone pilot to accompany you to shoot footage of your private tour. Perfect for those Instagram shots.

We hope you enjoy your day trip to Nusa Penida.

Lembongan Island Tour

We’ve covered how to get to Nusa Lembongan in the snorkeling Lembongan section above. Like most of the islands off the coast of Bali, it’s by fast boat.

You can take a Lembongan day trip by yourself or you can take a Reef and Lembongan Island day trip.

Climb aboard a luxury catamaran and enjoy a whole day of fun-filled activities. Including cultural walks, coral viewing, snorkeling and more.

This Nusa Lembongan day trip leaves from Benoa harbour and moors at a pontoon in the beautiful turquoise waters of Lembongan island Bali.

Hotel transfers, return transfers to Lembongan Bay are included. As is morning and afternoon tea and drinks. Lunch is an international buffet.

Also included is a Lembongan village excursion, unlimited banana boat rides a water slide, a semi-submersible coral viewer, insurance and much more.

Sanur to Lembongan

I’m going to cover a few key points you need to know about how to get to Lembongan Island from Bali.

Up until recently, you had to be prepared to get a little wet as there are no jetties at Sanur or Lembongan. However, now there are jetties that make for easier embarking and disembarking.

Don’t worry there are plenty of porters to help you on and off the boat at both ends. They will help you with your luggage too if you are ditching the day trip idea and opting for a longer stay.

Porters are generally very good with your luggage, although you may find yours on the bottom of the pile. There are no guarantee’s everything in your luggage will make it in one piece. That’s travel though, isn’t it? The same could happen with the baggage handlers at the airport.

Other than a Nusa Lembongan tour you can book your return ticket on a fast boat or the Nusa Lembongan ferry and wing it once you are there. I don’t recommend this though for your first visit to Nusa Lembongan Island as most of the island has dirt roads.

If you want only a fast boat to Nusa Lembongan tickets click here for more information and to book.

There is a slow boat or public ferry to Nusa Lembongan. The ferry departs every day from Sanur Beach at 10.30am right in front of the Ananda Hotel. Or depending on the ride newar the Grand Inna Bali Beach Hotel.

The ticket counter is at the end of Hang Tuah Strret, Sanur. However, note – there is no same-day return trip.

The boat departs from Nusa Lembongan at 8am. The ride from Sanur to Lembongan is approximately 90 minutes.

Day trips from Sanur to Amed Bali

Snorkeling Amed Bali

It’s a couple of hours’ drive to Amed but well worth the drive. You’ll step back in time and discover the Bali of old.

The main road is a potholed dusty one-lane road.

The coastline has spectacular scenery easily viewed from the hilly roads that meander along the west coast.

Either hire your own private driver or go with a small group tour for this East Bali snorkeling day trip to Amed.

Snorkeling in Amed Bali

USS Liberty

In 1942 a Japanese submarine torpedoed a US Army transport ship The Liberty. The Liberty now sits around 30m offshore, clearly seen from the top of the water.

You’ll find this shipwreck about 20mins drive north of Amed at Tulamben.

It’s well worth a day trip from Sanur as it’s easy to access from the coastline and you’ll see lots of soft coral and fish as the Liberty sits just 3 meters below.

Included in this tour are lunch and a guide. Be sure and take your own towel as one isn’t provided.

Tulamben Diving

If you’ve always wanted to learn to dive this could be a perfect time.

Perfect for a number of reasons.

  • The dive site is close to the shore
  • The wreck is just under the surface of the water
  • It’s in a safe environment
  • No large sharks to worry about 😊

I say that light-heartedly as the fear of sharks kept me out of the water and stopped me from diving for many years. It really is an amazing experience to see beautiful corals, fish and other sea creatures in their natural habitat. Go on, give it a go!

Best Things To Do In Ubud Bali

One of the best day trips from Sanur is to Ubud in central Bali. It’s close, Sanur to Ubud is only around 50 minute’s drive, depending on the time of day and the traffic of course.

In this section, we’ll cover a 1-day itinerary to Ubud. Plus, we’ll show you a one-day Bali tour or two on organised tours if you don’t want to organise your own.

An Ubud tour might just be the tour you are looking for so you can explore what to do in Ubud. Or you may prefer to look into things to see in Ubud and take part in some of the fun activities in the surrounding area.

nusa penida tour from sanur

Private Ubud Day Tour

If you don’t want to go on an organised day tour the next best thing is to organise your own.

This way you can do this is to hiring a driver for the day and having your own customised tour of Bali.

Trust me it won’t be difficult to find a private Bali driver. Most likely they will find you first. They do this by calling out to you in the street as you walk by. “Transport, transport.” Is the usual.

You’ll have to negotiate a price as 1) it’s expected and 2) It’s almost a National sport in Bali.

If you don’t want to negotiate or prefer a trusted driver we have you covered. We’ve partnered with a trusted company where you can read reviews and get up-to-date information.

Things to see in Ubud Art Market

Ubud Art Market

If shopping is your thing or even if you are slightly curious about the Balinese culture the Ubud Art Market is definitely worth a visit.

Your driver will drop you off, just arrange a pickup time and place and he’ll be there. In fact, there have been many times we’ve been on the lookout for our drivers and they seem to magically appear from nowhere. So don’t worry about losing him.

There are two parts to the Art Market in Ubud with the second part downstairs, the wet markets.

You’ll see all types of crafts including pashmina, sarongs, rattan baskets, kites, hats, handicrafts, gorgeous silk scarves and jewellery. This is a short version of what you will find there.

One word of advice if you see something you love, buy it. Sometimes you can never find the same item again, no matter where you look.

Remember to bargain, it’s all part of the fun. You’ll generally pay around 50% of the first price mentioned. Unless you are the first customer of the day and then you may get a special “morning price”. This is a sign for the stallholder of good luck for the rest of the day. Win-win for you both.

Ubud Monkey Forest

Mandala Suci Wenara Wana as it’s known to the Balinese, or Monkey Forest Ubud, is a natural sanctuary for monkeys.

Personally, I haven’t been there as I don’t like monkeys much as I was bitten at a young age. I have walked past though and it’s a beautiful cool environment.

The Monkey Forest is just over 25 acres. It has over 100 species of trees, 3 Temples and a number of trails you can walk through to explore the forest.

You can view the stream running through part of the forest area, and visit the public hall, the canteen and the conservation area.

There is also a first aid centre. Unfortunately, this is used on a daily basis by visitors that have encountered an aggressive monkey. To minimise any contact with monkeys, do not carry or offer them any food.

Put your sunglasses and hat in a zippered bag. Hold on tightly to your phone and cameras as they have been known to grab them from unsuspecting tourists.

There are over 700 monkeys in the habitat. They are territorial with each of the 6 main groups of monkeys reining over certain areas of the forest. Follow the simple observations outlined above and you’ll be fine.

We haven’t provided the information to alarm you, more to prepare you.

Dragon Bridge in Monkey Forest in Ubud

Tegallalang Rice Terraces

Not a monkey insight here, well there wasn’t the day we visited.

The most popular rice fields in Bali are 10 km north of Ubud, so around a 15-minute drive. Depending on the traffic.

It’s definitely worth a visit, (do so early before the tourist buses turn up). The scenery is Instaworthy and breathtakingly beautiful.

You can wander in these rice terraces to grab that Insta shot if you have an account. Or you can take it up a notch and have a shot at the most popular Bali Swing that is close by.

nusa penida tour from sanur

Sukawati Markets

On your way to or from Ubud ask your driver to swing by Sukawati Markets .

Generally, the art market areas don’t open until later in the morning, around 10 am. So it might be best to visit in the afternoon on your return to Sanur.

Why visit Sukawati if you are visiting the Art Market Ubud? The diversity and price. It’s cheaper at Sukawati than most markets in Bali either on the coast from Kuta to Canggu or Ubud.

You’ll find beautiful oil paintings and wooden carvings at Sukawati. Anything from Buddha’s to a 5ft high sea scene featuring dolphins, turtles and fish. Most of the work is brilliant.

You can also find general market stores for clothing, flower markets and wet markets at Sukawati.

Cycling Tour Ubud

There are several cycling tours in Ubud . Some needing to peddle power and some use e-bikes or electric bikes.

The durations vary too from 1 hour to several hours so depending on what you wanted to see and do in Ubud would depend on the tour you select.

Whichever tour you select you’ll be guaranteed of getting off the usual tourist path and exploring the culture and beauty of Bali.

Make sure you wear a helmet and follow all the safety guidelines you’ll be given before you head off on your tour. Take plenty of water and sunscreen too. Although Ubud has cooler temperatures than the coastal areas of Bali, the sun is still harsh.

We’ve listed all the tours following, so you can choose the one best suited to you.

White Water Rafting Bali

We’ve been white water rafting in Bali a few times and loved it each time.

Don’t be concerned about tackling difficult rapids, falling out of your raft or getting hurt. The water isn’t that fierce down the Ayung River.

Or it hasn’t been the times we’ve gone rafting.

A certain fitness level is required though, to either walk down to the river or climb up from the river.

If you don’t have a level of fitness your quads and calf muscles will be sore. That said, people who were fit still had muscle soreness for a couple of days too. However, it’s totally worth it, so go and have some fun!

Having done most of these activities and tours in Bali, I can’t understand why more people visiting don’t get out of Kuta or Seminyak to discover the “real Bali”. I’m going to share this very comprehensive post so my friends can see it. It’s the best guide of what to do in Bali ever!

Wow, Kathy thanks very much for your feedback! Coming from fellow travel writer and blogger that means a lot. The feedback is also good as I did wonder if I waffled on a bit. There’s lots more I could add. Perhaps that will be a future post

What a great guide Annette. We love Bali but haven’t been to Sanur. I’ve been more of an Ubud girl, but there’s still so much more to discover. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂

Thanks Jo, my pleasure. Yes there is so much to discover about beautiful Bali outside of the usual haunts. We might see you in Sanur one day 😀

  • Pingback: Best Spa in Sanur | Sanur Bali Guide

We’ve stayed in Sanur a few times on our visits to Bali and always enjoyed it. This post shows why it’s such a great place to stay in Bali and is in easy reach of some of the island’s best attractions and things to do. I’ll be doing the bike tour on our next visit.

Exactly Nina, it a great place as other areas are so accessible. The bike tours are great!

We enjoyed our week in Bali. One of the big draws of Bali for us would be snorkelling and scuba diving. I was sick on our first visit so missed doing this. So great to know that we can easily do a day trip to do this from Sanur. Boat trips to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan sound perfect for us. We had a private driver in Bali and it was the best investment we made. A luxury catamaran trip around Nusa Lembongan might also be a great idea. Thanks for the new great ideas for day trips.

You are welcome Linda. Private Drivers are definitely the way to go. So easy!

I like the idea of having your own Bali driver to be a chauffeur and tour guide. That way you can take your time with the sights and not have to stress about catching a ride every time you stop. As long as you find one that you feel comfortable with. Gosh it all looks so beautiful. I’ve always wanted to see the gorgeous rice terraces in real life!

Hiring a private driver is the way to go. You then can have a lot of input and flexibility. The rice terraces are stunning, you won’t be disappointed.

Ok, I am sold! I so want to come out here and explore EVERYTHING. The islands look beautiful and I can see myself relaxing on the beach while my kids can swim in the sea but what is more appealing for me is the trekking, seeing waterfalls and seeing the rice terrace. I love nature and would prefer to be there instead of the city life.

Sanur and Bali in general will be perfect for you if you love nature. Hopefully we will see you on the beaches of Sanur soon!

It seems that there is not really that much to do in Sanur and everything—waterfalls, rice terraces, snorkeling, diving, etc. are nearer Ubud. So should we stay in Ubud?

We find there is plenty to do in Sanur, however, it does depend on what you like to do and what you like to see. Best diving and snorkeling is off the east coast, especially from Sanur. Sanur still has my vote over Ubud, as Ubud is now very busy and more commercialised for us.

I’ve been to Bali a few times and my favourite place is Ubud. I love the peaceful feel of the rice paddies and people are really nice. I haven’t been to Nusa Penida though. I know it’s touristy but it looks amazing!

The people are so lovely in Bali and Ubud is a beautiful part. Nusa Penida looks gorgeous doesn’t it, however, the roads are atrocious I hear.

I am looking forward to going back to Bali again next year with family this time. There is just so much to do and see and with some organisation and planning they are all easy to do too. We didn’t stay in Sanur but I think any of the main areas are great for tripping around the island. We didn’t get round to visiting Nusa Penida last time either but instead went to Lombok and the Gilis, so we will do that this trip!

Sanur is a great place to use for a base as it’s easier to get in and out as the traffic isn’t as congested as the western towns of Kuta, Legion, Seminyak, etc. The Gilis are beautiful to visit too.

Your post makes me want to hop a plane and return to Bali. I went to rejuvenate and mostly stayed near Ubud, hired a driver and explored the temples and rice terraces. Would just love to base myself in Sanur and visit the islands.

Thanks Alison, I know what you mean about hoping on a plane! Sanur certainly is a great base.

Sanur sounds wonderful and I think I will stay there next time I go to Bali. I would love to see the rice terraces on the cycling tour. A waterfall tour with a personal driver would be something I would love also. Lots of great tips here which will come in handy.

Thanks Tania, hopefully, we’ll see you on the beaches of Sanur soon!

Wow, there are so many options!! I haven’t been to Indonesia so I sort of want to do all of them (except the monkey forest, I think I’ll pass on that haha). The rice fields in particular sounds so cool, and the waterfalls look beautiful!!

I’m sure you’d love seeing all that Bali has to offer. I have to agree with passing on the Monkey Forest…but that’s just me 😉

Thanks for sharing great trips from Sanur. Nusa Penida day trip being the most popular day trips from Bali would be my first choice to do this. You have taken beautiful photos of all the places.

Thanks Yukti. Yes the Nusa Penida is definitely a popular choice.

Hi Annette, Great guide. I have booked my first trip to Bali in September 2020. Flights and accomadtion have been booked. My first week is in UBUD for a cultural experience and the 2nd week in Sanur for a more beachy holiday. I am travelling solo and will be 65 then, but fortunately a youngish 65! So I like travelling around a bit. Is there any tips you can give to a first time traveller to Bali. Obviously I will keep looking at this site from time to time to keep my mind open on what is best. Trips restaurants etc. THANKS

Hi Michael and/or Robert You’ll fit right into the scene of Ubud and Sanur being a youngish 65, you’ve chosen well! I’m currently working on a long post that will answer most if not all of your questions about Sanur and Bali. It’s loaded with stacks of tips that you are asking about. Stay tuned, the post will be live between Christmas and New Year. You can always join our Facebook group to stay up-to-date and ask questions there too. https://facebook.com/SanurBaliTravelPlanning

Snorkeling Trip from Sanur to Nusa Penida

Snorkeling sanur

Sanur offers calm water and weak currents with an abundance of sea life perfect for relaxed snorkeling. It’s one of the most accessible snorkeling sites in Bali due to its location close to the shore, large sandy seabeds, and gradual slopes.

A short boat ride from Sanur Bay gets you to some of the best diving and snorkeling spots in Bali, namely Nusa Penida. It’s one of the islands near Bali with a pristine environment and is still considered untouched by visitors. Nusa Penida is located to the southeast of Bali separated by the Badung Strait. The marine life here includes Manta Rays, Sunfish, Sharks, and stunning coral reefs. Here are some awesome spots for snorkeling in Nusa Penida .

Crystal Bay

Nusa Penida doesn’t offer too many places for shore snorkeling. Still, Crystal Bay is an easy-to-access snorkeling site with an amazing sight in the shallow water, making it suitable for all experience levels. You’ll be amazed by the clear water and vibrant corals where sometimes turtles are spotted. The morning is the best time for snorkeling here as the water is at its calmest. With over 30 meters of visibility, Crystal Bay is a paradise for underwater photographers.

Swimming with Manta Rays is an experience worth having, Nusa Penida is the best place to encounter these majestic creatures. They are here all year round and usually gather in a shallow bay called Manta Bay, where you can get a chance to snorkel with these underwater beauties.

Due to its difficult access, there are very few tourists on this secluded beach. The access from land is possible although challenging. Prepare to be amazed once you make it, as it is considered as one of the best snorkeling spots in Nusa Penida. Snorkel through the crystal-clear water and find thousands of fish swimming past colorful corals. Gamat Bay is definitely a place you shouldn’t miss.

Ready for an underwater adventure in Bali? Contact Blue Season Bali for snorkeling and diving trips in Sanur, Nusa Penida, and other popular destinations in the archipelago accompanied by our professional divers and the best equipment.

There are fastboat services from Sanur (most services), Kusamba (couple of services) and Padangbai (1 service).

From Padangbai there is also a big RORO

not true with the boat from Sanur. There is a harbour. There are multiple companies with 3 or 4 services each way daily out of Sanur.

From Padangbai there is only 1 service fastboat service a day with http://www.baliekajaya.com

It goes to the Buyuk Harbour near Sampalan in the north east side NUSA PENIDA. There are piers.

If going from Padangbai may as well get the big RORO ferry into Sampalan. Runs “sometimes” twice a day (over the years the service has varied from once to twice a day). Goes into Sampalan. Costs a few $.

There is a pier.

NUSA PENIDA

At Nusa Penida Toyapakeh harbour there is a pier. Some companies also have floating piers. However some times the boats beach. This may be due to tide.

Buyuk near Sampalan there are piers.

nusa penida tour from sanur

The harbour at Sanur is fairly new. You may have watched an older video.

nusa penida tour from sanur

There is now a new (as of the end of 2022) terminal at the northern end of Sanur for passengers departing from Sanur/returning to Sanur.

Passengers no longer need to walk off the beach into the shallow water & onto the fast boats.

Exit the terminal, down the escalator/stairs, a ramp & onto the pier where the fast boats dock/are docked.

Thanks @NotaPigsty,@Hamish07 and @Summerhama58 for your prompt reply

It really helps in planning my travel to Nusa Penida.

Few More doubts.

1) Do I need to book the Ferry/boat in advance or I can get the tickets easily at the counter on the date of travel

where exactly are you staying after Ubud .

If returning to Ubud then just leave it at the hotel or if returning to a different hotel in Ubud just move your luggage to them before getting your boat. Sometimes even the hotel you are leaving will keep your luggage for you. Often free.

If you are going elsewhere then http://www.balistoreluggage.com is a reputable company.

Used them ourselves on our last trip when we did our side trip to Perth. Didn’t need my dive gear so we left one bag with them.

They picked up our bags the day before our flight to Perth and dropped them off at our hotel on return.

If you turn up at Sanur harbour there are numerous companies with different timetables.

You will have the hassle of trying to decide which company to use and could end up at the “wrong” harbour in relation to your accommodation.

You also have to take into account any “on Nusa Penida” hotel transfer. Unlike Bali mainland where you can often get transfers included or offered Nusa Penida transfers generally not included or offered.

Therefore you also have to arrange any NP Hotel transfer.

If you go to a tourist booth in Ubud you can book your fastboat and Ubud to port transfer. Also the “tourist booth” will tell you which NP harbour they use.

You choose departure time and you get to haggle on the price.

You could then also book a return with any Bali port to Hotel transfers.

With this you could be offered Sanur or Kusamba port.

Thanks for information Notapigsty
