One day in Eindhoven with the best things to do in Eindhoven and hotspots

July 8, 2018 by Karen Turner 2 Comments

This past month, I visited Eindhoven, the Netherlands for a long weekend. This modern Dutch city is the perfect antidote to the historic cities in the Brabant area as the modern architecture, cool neighborhoods, and great hotspots in Eindhoven make it shine.

I used Eindhoven as a base, however I think that one day in Eindhoven is a great way to get a taste of the things to do in Eindhoven. If you’re flying into Eindhoven airport and considering having a day in Eindhoven, keep reading for what to do in Eindhoven…

Is Eindhoven worth visiting?

Personally, I’m someone who  loves  old historic cities.  Due to Eindhoven’s history (below), Eindhoven is an ultra-modern city.  Although it’s certainly full of great hotspots, it’s not for everyone. If you’re into looking for cool hotspots, modern architecture, and cool urban renewal projects, you’ll love Eindhoven.   Simply, if you enjoyed Rotterdam , you might like Eindhoven as there’s tons of hotspots.

I visited as my husband was attending a metal festival nearby and it made more sense to stay in Eindhoven for a few days. I  loved the craft beer, the cool neighborhoods, and the food that I had in the city as well as the festive atmosphere.  People in Brabant are very proud of their Southern culture and I’d  love to visit Eindhoven for Carnaval  as I think that it would be a blast.

Eindhoven is famous in the Netherlands for Glow Eindhoven, which is a light sculpture festival (similar to Amsterdam Light Festival ) that takes place in November.  I haven’t been yet, but the sculptures look amazing.  Another exciting event is the Dutch Design Week in October as Eindhoven is at the cutting edge of Dutch design.

A brief history of Eindhoven

Eindhoven received city rights in 1232 by the Duke of Brabant. It was pretty small with a castle outside of its walls, however it was plundered and burned.  In 1554, a large fire destroyed most of the city, however the city was rebuilt.  However, Eindhoven was destroyed at the hands of the Spanish as it was a frequent battleground between the Dutch and the Spanish.

The industrial revolution was good to Eindhoven and thanks to Philips, the city boomed in the late 1800s.  Like many cities, Eindhoven grew beyond its medieval boundaries in the early 1900s, partially due to its strong electronics, engineering, and automotive industries.

During World War II, the Philips factory downtown was destroyed by the RAF although the rest of the city was destroyed by the Luftwaffe.  As a result, Eindhoven rebuilt itself in a modern style as little of the original historic city remained.

Where to stay in Eindhoven

Entrance to a cute guesthouse in EIndhoven, the Netherlands in the Villapark district.

I found Eindhoven fairly affordable compared to many other Dutch cities.  I stayed at the Sycamore , a no-frills guesthouse in the Villapark.  Villapark is a famous neighborhood in Eindhoven near De Laak where the Philips family had the house that they entertained at.

It’s only fifteen minutes on foot from the center and it came with free parking.  The wifi was a bit slow, but I really enjoyed the location as well as the five minute walk to the train station as I took a day trip to Den Bosch .

If you’re looking for something different, consider staying at the Blue Collar Hotel , which is located in the cool Strijp-S district.  This hotel in a former factory has an awesome bar as well as affordable rates.

Those looking for something clean and modern can check rates at the Student Hotel near Eindhoven Centraal, the Little Grand for the boutique hotel experience, or the Pullman Eindhove n for a 4* star hotel with quality.

What to do in Eindhoven in one day

Breakfast in eindhoven, meneer boer.

Beautiful hotspot in Eindhoven that you'll want to visit in this Dutch city. #eindhoven #hotspot #onbijt

Eindhoven has a ton of great hotspots although my favorite was Meneer Boer All Day Breakfast.  It is exactly what you expect and I was really blown away by the breakfast (even as an American!)

Their menu portions are large–and the quality is high given the affordable price.  (They offer vegan friendly options as well!) I loved the interior although get here before lunch time as it gets crowded.

Coffeelab, a modern coffee bar near Eindhoven Centraal, is one of the best coffee places in Eindhoven.  If you’re not much of a big breakfast person, consider stopping by for a morning pick-me-up at this Eindhoven hotspot.

Center of Eindhoven

Interesting architectural piece in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. This modern Dutch city is perfect for a day trip. #eindhoven

After a massive breakfast, you might be ready to walk around.  Although Eindhoven’s city center is not historic, it’s full of cool modern buildings, perfect for architecture lovers.  The glass shops were particularly cool to see.  There’s ample parking although you’ll need to pay a few euros.

Sint Catharinakerk

Sint Catharinakerk, one of the churches in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. This modern Dutch city has many things to do in! #eindhoven #netherlands

One of the major landmarks of Eindhoven that you can see from many places in Eindhoven is Sint Catherine Church. This Catholic church is from 1867.  Classical concerts are held here each Sunday for a few euros.

Optional: Philips Museum

If you’re interested in Philips, you can visit the Philips Museum to learn about innovation and the future of lighting.   Here, you can play with the latest technologies and get inspired by what is possible with technology. (I ended up skipping it to walk around more.)

Strijp-S District

Graffiti in the Strijp-S district. Exploring this cool neighborhood in Eindhoven is one of the best things to do in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

The Strijp-S district is one of the coolest neighborhoods in Eindhoven.  There’s a number of great restaurants in the Strijp-S District.  We visited Bagels and Juice for a smoothie, which was delicious.   Soul Kitchen is a well known dinner restaurant.  Alternatively, consider visiting Onder de Leidingstraat or Radio Royaal .  Brouwerij het Veem is a brewery that you can visit in this area.

Beautiful cafe in the Strijp-S district. Eindhoven is full of great hotspots and things to do! #eindhoven #netherlands #nederland

For shopping, consider stopping by the Winkelcentrum Urban Shopper or the Vershal het Veem for innovative designs.  You can also visit the Modern Art Museum here.  I personally just liked walking around to see the street art here. (The cafe at the Blue Collar Hotel was also nice to sit out at.)

Dinner in Eindhoven

Down town gourmet market.

This food hall in Eindhoven hosts 21 eateries and two cafes, so if you’re visiting with a group, it’s the perfect place to get dinner as everyone can get what they want.  Worth noting is that it’s card only, so be sure to make sure that your group takes turns as this Eindhoven hotspot fills up on the weekends.

The Happiness Kitchen

This organic restaurant locally sources its ingredients and creates beautiful, healthy food that you’ll want to eat.  If you’re traveling with someone who has allergies or who is vegan, the Happiness Kitchen can easily accommodate their needs.  Be sure to try the salted caramel brownie.

Where to drink in Eindhoven with the best craft beer in Eindhoven

Former hofje, now a cool bar in eindhoven, the Netherland. Read about the best places in Eindhoven to get a drink!

Eindhoven has fantastic craft beer. As a craft beer lover, I visited a number of beer bars in Eindhoven and I must say that Eindhoven is one of the premiere beer destinations in the Netherlands.  If you can get in and don’t love craft beer, consider visiting the Little One Speakeasy Bar , a cocktail bar in a former hofje.

Drinkers Pub is a cozy beer bar with a  giant selection of beers from all over the world and Brabant.  My favorite craft brewery was Van Moll , a craft brewery in Eindhoven with a dedicated beer bar.

Bierprofesor is yet another great beer bar in Eindhoven .  One of the other great beer bars in Eindhoven is  Stadsbrouwerij Eindhoven , which stocks the 100 watt beer (one of the top rated beers in Eindhoven).

Skip the The Van Gogh Bike Path

One of the things that I was  most excited about the the Van Gogh Bike Path.  We waited until it was pitch black (around midnight) to go.  We parked our car by the path and walked down the Van Gogh Bike Path, however it was actually quite hard to see the stars.

I felt really let down and I think that it would have been  much better closer to sunset if I was on a bike.  I’d recommend skipping the Van Gogh Bike Path as it’s a bit outside of Eindhoven and you’d need to bike a while to get here.

Other things to do in Eindhoven

Crazy UFO-shaped structure in Eindhoven, the Netherlands that is used for conferences. #eindhoven

Evoluon is a UFO shaped building that was conceptualized by Philips as a science museum on the 75th anniversary of Philips.  It was popular for a while, however it’s now a crazy looking conference center outside of the city center.

Explore de Villapark

Beautiful lush streets of the Villapark neighborhood in Eindhoven, a leafy neighborhood where the industry barons used to live. #Eindhoven #Netherlands #philips

This beautiful leafy area close to Eindhoven Centraal is where many of the barons and industry titans of Eindhoven created their homes after the Philips family built De Laak , a sprawling mansion in this area.  It’s just nice to walk past on foot admiring the spacious homes if you’re looking for a change after the modern architecture in Eindhoven.

Getting to Eindhoven

Meneer Boer All Day Breakfast, an Eindhoven hotspot. Read about the best things to do in Eindhoven. #eindhoven #nederland #netherlands

Eindhoven has one of the best budget airports in the Netherlands.  You can easily take a 400-401 bus for a couple euros from Eindhoven Airport to Eindhoven Centraal.   It runs every eight minutes.  From Eindhoven Centraal, it’s a short walk to the city center and there’s a number of hotels in Eindhoven close to the train station.  The train from Amsterdam to Eindhoven takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes direct. A single ride ticket costs a little less than twenty euros.

I am Brabant born and hardly familiar with Eindhoven, can you believe it! Last fall, when visiting the GLOW light festival, was the first time in years that I properly visited, I also checked out Strijp S while there and really (really!) liked the atmosphere of the city. I’ll definitely go back soon to discover it in a more quiet pace.

I can’t believe that Esther! I think going back at a less busy time might be best to experience the cool restaurants and cafes! More about Brabant soon!

One Day in Eindhoven Itinerary – Top Things to do in Eindhoven, Netherlands

The Netherlands is a well-known country among travellers for its art, culture, exciting museums, and iconic locations. Eindhoven, the country’s capital of industrial design, is the fifth largest city with many engaging locations that draw tourists’ attention. And while it may not be the most famous Dutch city, there is no doubt that there are many interesting locations you can squeeze into your Eindhoven itinerary. And you only need one day to see them!

One day in Eindhoven Itinerary

What’s the best time to visit Eindhoven?

The weather of this city is highly affected by the currents of the Atlantic and the North Sea, with freezing winters and warm or pleasant summers. The wind blows very cold from December to March, so if you don’t like the cold, this may not be a great time to visit, but there’s no denying that the Christmas mood is perfect.

Eindhoven Old Town

It gets warmer in April, and the temperatures keep climbing till July, which is the warmest month. August, on the other hand, is the busiest. Therefore, summer is definitely the best time to visit Eindhoven.

It should also be mentioned that Eindhoven abounds with interesting events. GLOW , for example, is a light festival that takes place in November, Park Hilaria is a 10-day August fair with loads of awesome rides, and there’s almost always an interesting music festival somewhere in the city.

A few facts about Eindhoven

Eindhoven today has just under 240,000 people, and it was first mentioned in 1232 when the small town was granted city rights.

The city is also known as the City of Lights. In 1891, the Philips family started producing light bulbs, and soon the whole city was decorated with lights. The company later grew to world fame and today has more than 80,000 employees. Naturally, the city also has a Philips museum.

Eindhoven Philips Building

In addition, Eindhoven is the greenest city among the major cities in the country. It also has fantastic parks for everyone to chill, relax and do some sports activities.

Interestingly, not having lights and bells on bikes or cycles is illegal, and helmets are optional. Thus, if the traveller desires to make the trip to the city on a bike, it is vital to follow these rules.

Eindhoven

One day in Eindhoven Itinerary:

Welcome to Eindhoven, a beautiful modern city in the south of the Netherlands. There certainly is a lot to see, experience and enjoy here, but you can still make it even if you only have just one day. All you need is a reliable itinerary. Here it is – these are the best things to see and do during your one day in Eindhoven.

Start with a cup of DENF coffee

One cannot think of a better way to start the day than this. DENF Coffee is right there in the city centre, so it’s a great place from which to start your tour. This place is one of the best cafes in the city and serves various kinds of coffee – sit down, relax, do some people-watching, and get ready for an exciting day ahead.

Follow that up with a visit to the DAF Museum

After a nice cup of coffee, visit Eindhoven’s DAF Museum , which is approximately five minutes from the cafe. DAF is one of the largest manufacturers in Europe, creating many trucks and cars, and this place has a variety of collections of its products, spanning across decades.

DAF Musem, Eindhoven

The abbreviation is actually short for Van Doorne’s Aanhangwagen Febriek – the company was founded in 1928 and started by two brothers, Hub and Wim Van Doorne, in a blacksmith’s store. Every showcased item is perfectly maintained, so this is definitely something for car enthusiasts.

Make an obligatory stop at the Philips Museum

Visiting Eindhoven and not visiting the Philips Museum is like going to Amsterdam and not doing a water canal trip. Philips is one of the main reasons for the popularity of Eindhoven because it was here that the Philips family started manufacturing lightbulbs in their early days.

Philips Museum, Eindhoven

This museum takes visitors through the history of this company which is inextricably linked with the history of the city. By visiting this place, you will get a greater insight into Philips and learn how the company helped Eindhoven become the financial powerhouse it is today.

Step into Van Abbemuseum

Van Abbemuseum is about one kilometre away from the Philips Museum. Hence, hiring a taxi is an ideal option if you want to get quickly and comfortably here and even to other locations in the city. Besides, it’s much faster than public transport.

Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven

Now, Van Abbemuseum is a museum of contemporary art, with more than 2500 different pieces, including some works of Pablo Picasso, and art collections of paintings, sketches, sculptures, video works, and many others. Even the building itself (the modern wing) is a piece of art and worth examining thoroughly on its own. The gallery is considered to be one of the most exciting ones in the whole country, so it very much deserves a place on your Eindhoven itinerary.

Find a place for lunch

At this point, it will likely be past noon. Thus, it is pretty effortless to guess that you will be quite hungry. Bar and restaurant Vestdijk 47 is very close to Van Abbemuseum, and it is a contemporary, relaxed restaurant that serves excellent food. So, a great choice for lunch.

Giornale is another fantastic choice, especially if you like Italian food, and Doyy and 1910 Restaurant also come very highly recommended. That, of course, is not all when it comes to restaurants in Eindhoven, so a bit of exploring can go a long way. Do invest some time into it if you have it, you won’t regret it.

See St. Catherine’s Church

Next on our itinerary is St . Catherine’s Church , and you don’t have to go far to see it. Its fantastic design includes several symbolic references to the work of Joseph Thijm , a great writer. This neo-Gothic beauty has two impressive exterior towers named David and Mary, but you also don’t want to miss out on marvellous rose windows. At night, the church becomes more splendid to behold as it is decorated with different lights.

St. Catherine’s Church, Eindhoven

Visit the Philips Stadium

It should come as no surprise that Philips has its own stadium in the city, too. Home to the Dutch powerhouse PSV, Philips Stadium can hold up to 36,500 spectators and has plenty of commercial places, so if you’re a football fan, this is something you shouldn’t miss.

Philips Stadium, Eindhoven

Interestingly, the stadium was built way back in 1910, and its purpose was to provide Philips employees with a place for physical activities. Naturally, it has gone through several renovations since then, but its history is inextricably linked with PSV, who moved in just three years after the stadium was built.

Spend your evening in Strijp-S District

What was once a Philips industrial complex is today one of the most beautiful locations in the city. Strijp-S has plenty of great restaurants, shops and events to offer, so it’s a wonderful place for an evening stroll, dinner and maybe some souvenir shopping. Oh, and you will see many interesting art pieces here, too.

Strijp-S District at night

Ketelhuis Strijp – S is a nice place to sit down if you’re looking for a bite or even just evening drinks, and the same can be said for Loetje Eindhoven . Once again, you will see plenty of dining options here, so you can be sure you will have a wonderful evening in Eindhoven.

For those of you who really want to feel the pulse of the city you’re visiting, Queen Hotel is the perfect place to stay. This is because this hotel overlooks a busy market and is close to the city centre. The interior is extremely pleasant and cosy, while the well-equipped rooms provide plenty of comfort to every guest. There’s even a heated terrace here where you can enjoy a nice meal. In short, a lovely little hotel.

Design Hotel Glow

Design Hotel Glow

Keizersgracht 13 A-B, Eindhoven – Centar, 5611 GC Eindhoven

Another quaint and charming hotel in Eindhoven city centre, Design Hotel Glow boasts excellent interior design and plenty of amenities in every room. Furthermore, the service here is top-notch, and the location is pretty much perfect for visiting most of the sights we mentioned in the itinerary above. They can even deliver breakfast to your room if you so desire! You definitely can’t go wrong with this place.

Day trips from Eindhoven

Now that you have a perfectly planned day in Eindhoven which includes all the exciting locations to enjoy and some great places to eat and relax in, let’s discuss some day trips from this city. If you have the time, it would really be a shame not to visit at least one of these places.

Zaanse Schans

When in the Netherlands for a holiday, this is definitely not the place you want to miss. Zaanse Schans is the perfect day trip location, less than two hours from Eindhoven. The old wooden windmills and houses in this town will transport you back in time instantly and give you a great sense of the traditional Netherlands. And with the excellent food they serve here, it’s easy to see how this can become a wonderful day trip from Eindhoven.

You can get to Rotterdam in about an hour and a half by car from Eindhoven, which makes this a neat little day trip. One day in Rotterdam is an opportunity to enjoy some truly breathtaking architecture and see the biggest port in Europe. There are also many excellent cafes, restaurants and bars where you can just chill and enjoy the fact that you’re here.

Amsterdam and Eindhoven are also just an hour and a half apart, so if you haven’t yet visited the most famous city in the country, this is your chance. Amsterdam’s canals are among the city’s best sights, and travellers can explore them through a private cruise. Your one day in Amsterdam can also include visiting some fantastic museums, you will see flowers all around you, and there’s always the possibility of a visit to the famous Red Light District.

Breda is a wonderful city full of historic sights, chief of which is the Breda Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many other examples of centuries-old architecture, and this exceptionally charming city also offers plenty of nice places for a stroll. Relax, explore and go sightseeing on this day trip, plus you can maybe also include Rotterdam in the mix since it’s less than half an hour away.

Extra tips for visiting Eindhoven

Organise everything in advance – When travelling to Eindhoven, make sure to arrange everything in advance. Make the reservations in your hotel, schedule the transportation service, and also plan the whole day of your trip. Reservations are the best option since they guarantee the booking of everything as sometimes things are unavailable when it is needed.

Book the refundable stays – Make sure that the place you book for your stay is refundable. You don’t want to lose all of your money if something unexpected comes up and you’re unable to make good of your reservation.

Buy the ov-chipkaart – If you plan on using public transport a lot, then buying the OV-chipkaart is your best choice. You can just scan the card at the end of the trip to make the payment. It is a simple process and makes travelling quite effortless.

Careful with the coffee – It is illegal to enter any coffee shop in the Netherlands unless the person is 18 years plus. Many places in the city only allow entry if the person is an adult. Hence, it would be a great idea to carry the ID card along in the bag while travelling.

Make sure you have everything you need

What to pack for your next trip.

Make your next trip as simple and as enjoyable as possible by packing smart. It’s amazing how much stress top travel items can save you, so choose carefully. Things like lightweight travel backpacks, for example, are ideal for short trips and allow you to move around with ease, and a passport holder will make sure you keep your documents safe at all times. Check our travel checklist guide for 2021 to make sure you haven’t missed anything, and travel to your next destination in style and with maximum comfort.

As an Eindhovenaar I had to laugh about the suggesties to take a taxi to the Van Abbemuseum. Only if you want to waste time and money, otherwise you walk 11 minutes through the city centre (Lovely sightseeing), or cycle 3 minutes. In Eindhoven you dont need taxi’s to get around. Public transportation is quite good, but the best way to get around is by bike or on foot.

Taxis are not required in Eindhoven. While public transportation is adequate, biking or walking is the easiest way to get around.

15 Things You Need to Do in Eindhoven: 1 Day Itinerary

van abbe museum, eindhoven attractions itinerary for 1 day

However, there are many things you could do here and spend a nice day or two in Eindhoven.

Here, I will let you know what are the best places to visit, where to stay and how to plan your trip to this small Dutch city better.

In the end, you can find a 1-day itinerary to help you plan a perfect trip to Eindhoven.

Keep on reading!

I already visited the airport in Eindhoven a couple of times because of cheap flights going there. However, I finally visited the city itself just recently. And I loved it!

I always regarded  Eindhoven an industrial city of  Philips , a large Dutch technology company coming from this city.

Well, I cannot say it’s not, but what I can say is that Eindhoven is very diverse and  can offer various attractions and activities  for  every taste .

Best Places to Visit in Eindhoven

Before deciding on points of your 1-day itinerary, have a look at the attractions that Eindhoven offers.

Panasonic Stadium and PSV Museum

PSV Eindhoven football stadium in Eindhoven black and white

A must place to visit for football (soccer) fans is the Panasonic stadium of the PSV football club, one of the best football clubs in the Netherlands. It also has one of the best training schools in the world. It trains great football players and sells them to the richest and most famous clubs in the world.

Of course, there is also a museum of the  PSV football team  (which was actually founded by the Panasonic company in 1913) that you can visit  6 times a week except for Sunday . You can learn more information on the official  website of the museum .

Address :   Stadionplein  4

Price :  7,5 euro

Campus of Eindhoven Technical University

Eindhoven technical university campus in fog

Universities in the Netherlands are some of the best in the world.

And, the  Technical University in Eindhoven  is regarded as the best technical university in the Netherlands.

Its campus is located close to the train station, and you can walk there, take a look at the technically advanced labs and observe students hurrying up to their classes.

Flying Pins

Between the train station and the TU campus, there is a  sculpture  also worth paying attention to.  Flying pins and  a bowling ball is not only a nice place for a new profile picture, but it is also symbolical.

The yellow color of the pins represents the blossoming daffodils on the Kennedylaan every spring, and the entire structure reminds of the city dynamics.

Address :  Kennedylaan  2

Philips  Museum

Philips museum Eindhoven

Another heritage of  Philips  is t he museum of the company. It not only tells the history of the enterprise but also tells how much it influenced the history and growth of Eindhoven and the entire Netherlands.

It also  contributed to  the healthcare  industry by developing advanced X-Rays and scanning Dutch people for free to diagnose tuberculosis in the times when it was the most common serious disease.

All around Eindhoven, you can see streets, neighborhoods, and squares named by or in honor of the company that did so much for the city growth.

The museum  is open from Tuesday to Sunday.

Address :   Emmasingel  31

Price :  9 euro

Futuristic Architecture

Modern architecture in Eindhoven, things to do

The architecture of many parts of Eindhoven reminds most of other Dutch towns and cities. However, there are some modern and futuristic buildings located all around  it .

They all are used for different purposes: museums,  a conference  center, and even shops. Some of the places to find this kind of architecture is  the  18  Septemberplein . It is a shopping  square  not far from the train station with well-known brands, and some of their shops are located in  peculiar  glass buildings.

evoluon conference center in Eindhoven

Evoluon , t he UFO-like structure on the outskirts of the city is  a conference center  built by Philips in 1966. Since its construction was finished,  Evoluon  became one of the main symbols of the city.

In general, there are no exhibitions and public access to the building. However, you can visit the restaurant located inside. It is open from Monday to Sunday. For summer holidays, the entire building is closed.

Address :  Noord  Brabantlaan  1A

If you don’t want to miss anything interesting in Eindhoven, hire a private guide.

Design  Hotspots

Futuristic art next to the modern design museum in Eindhoven

Eindhoven is often regarded as the design capital of Holland .

Once you see so many modern buildings in Eindhoven, there should be a background of them and the reason for such a big number of these futuristic constructions. You can learn  more about the Dutch and local design and designers in numerous spots around the city.

Some of them include  Piet Hein Eek workplace and gallery located on  Halvemaanstraat  30 ,  the world-famous Design Academy on   Emmasingel  14 , and the  Sectie -C  creative area on  Daalakkersweg  16 .

You can learn more about the places to explore design in Eindhoven in  this guide .

Kruisstraat

One of the main streets in Eindhoven. Here you can find a wide range of international restaurants, shops and a local touch in the architecture and decoration.  A good place to feel the local vibes.

St. Catherine  Church

St Catherine church entrance in Eindhoven, holland

This neo-gothic Catholic Church located in the city center was finished in 1867.  It was built on the place of another church, and that one on the place of a previous one.

After archeological discoveries under the church, some  interesting  artifacts have been found. Today, you can see them as exhibits in side the building .

Dierenrijk  Zoo

Red panda in Dierenrijk Zoo next to Eindhoven

If you came to Eindhoven in warm time of the year, not like me, I recommend you visiting  Dierenrijk  Zoo . It is an interactive zoo, where your kids can even play with some of the animals.

There are also entertainment shows with seals and  elephants .

The zoo is located outside of the city but you can get there by car or by public transportation.  Geldropsedijk  in  Nuenen  is the closest bus stop to the Zoo, but you need to walk about 3,5 km (2 miles) to get to the Zoo. Look for a route 0900-9292 or check schedule  here .

Address :  1  Baroniehei , 5731 RG  Mierlo

Price : 18-20 euro

Strijp -S  District

Graffiti on the brick wall next to a bar in Eindhoven hipster area

I found this area by chance, but I really liked it. It looks like a couple of abandoned industrial buildings full of street art, filled with hipster cafes and a skate park.  Later, I found out that it’s one of the coolest areas in Eindhoven called  Strijp -S.

This place is w orth passing by on the way to  Evoluon  or the Modern Art Museum . But I recommend you also to stop at one of the unusual cafes and restaurants there.

preHistorisch   Dorp

Prehistorisch dorp next to eindhoven, 1-day trip from the city

To learn more about city  history , you can also visit the museum of Eindhoven  (or  preHistorisch   Dorp ) . The history starts in the  prehistorical times and focuses on the Iron Age and Middle ages covering not only the city but also the entire region of Brabant. Learn more on the  official website of the museum .

Address :  Boutenslaan  161B

Price : 9,75 euro

Van Abbe  Museum

If you like modern art, I recommend you to visit the  Van Abbe Contemporary  Art Museum in Eindhoven. It  always has different temporary exhibitions that will be interesting for every modern art conno is seur. Learn more about it  here .

Address:   B ilderdijklaan  10

Price : 13 euro (but there are many discounts for different groups of people)

Wings of Liberation  Museum

Gun in the wings of liberation museum next to Eindhoven, things to do in one day

The museum is located in a place where the huge and famous military operation called Market Garden took place .

It tells not only about the battle but also about the entire history of this part of Belgium during the Second World War. You can also see the military vehicles used for in the war. Check  the official website of the museum  for more info.

Address :  Sonseweg  39

DAF Museum

Daf trucks museum in Eindhoven, attractions of the city

T he large DAF trucks are also produced in Eindhoven . If you’re interested in this kind of vehicles, you can vis i t the DAF Museum  showing the production process  with a wide range of models of these trucks, and a history of the company.

Take into account that in March and April 2019, the museum will be closed due to restoration work. Now, the museum is open from Tuesday till Sunday.

Address :   Tongelresestraat  27

Price :  9 euro

Nightlife in Eindhoven

Nightlife on the Stratumseind street in Eindhoven

Eindhoven is not a large city, and most of the bars, coffeeshops and night clubs are located next to each other on the Stratumseind street and nearby areas. There are about 50 bars and clubs just on this street.

If you are not into parties, the market square is a great area for a relaxed evening with friends, a place to dine and have a beer in a patio.

You can learn more about nightlife in Eindhoven here.

1-Day Itinerary

It was a list of the main attractions worth mentioning in Eindhoven. Below, you can see my proposed 1-day Eindhoven itinerary. You can change it and add some new ones using this link .

  • The campus of Eindhoven University of Technology
  • Flying Pins Sculpture
  • Kruisstraat . Here, you can also visit the market at the end of the street and try international cuisine in one of the many restaurants and cafes.
  • Van Abbe Museum. Some other museums are located nearby, so you can choose the one you’d like to visit the most.
  • St. Catherine’s Church.
  • Philips museum. Worth spending an hour or two there.
  • Philips Stadium and PSV Museum. Attraction every football fan must visit in Eindhoven.
  • Strijp-S . Chill in the hipster area before continuing your Eindhoven itinerary. You can visit the modern art museum after that.
  • Piet Heen Eek . A great place for modern design lovers.
  • Evoluon. An unusual structure that everyone should see in Eindhoven.

Additionally, you can go to the zoo, preHistorisch Dorp or the Wings of Liberation museum which are located a bit outside of the city, so it may be worth staying in Eindhoven for more than one day.

How to Plan a Trip to Eindhoven

View from the plane on the sunset, Europe travel planning tips

I f you’re planning a trip to Eindhoven, you should go here by plane . Even if you live not very far from it, flying to this city might be a cheaper (and definitely, a more convenient option). I haven’t spent more than 20 euro for a one-way flight to Eindhoven.

You can check the cheapest and most convenient flights here .

If not by plane, you can get here by bus or by train. Both bus and train stations are located in the city center (close to each other), which is a convenient location to explore the main attractions of Eindhoven.

If you arrive at the airport, you have several options to go to the city:

  • Take the bus . 401 bus will take you directly to the train station. The one-way ticket costs about 4,5 euro, and the return one – 8,5. The ride takes just about 20 minutes, as the airport is located close to the city.  You can check the bus schedule here.
  • Rent a car . First time I arrived at Eindhoven, we rented a car with friends to start a road trip around Holland.  We didn’t have much time, so we didn’t go to Eindhoven (which I now regret). The car rentals are located just next to the airport, so you can just take your car and be in the city center in less than 10 minutes.
  • Perhaps, the most expensive option is taking a taxi . However, it won’t cost too much, because, as I said, the airport is very close to the city.

Don’t forget that Eindhoven and the entire Holland is pretty windy and rainy, so you might need to get a windproof umbrella not to get wet.

For convenience, I recommend you to buy a special travel backpack  or a suitcase that fits under the seat in low-cost airlines.

Where to Stay in Eindhoven

NH hotel eindhoven center with a great view

Eindhoven has a wide variety of hotels for you to spend a night or two in the city.

Hotels and hostels I can recommend are :

  • Backpackers BnB – the only hostel in Eindhoven I could find, and it is far not the best one, but perhaps the most budget version. You can book a bed here.
  • Saint Tropez Maison Meerhoven – a luxury house outside of the city center. Great option if you prefer relaxed vacations. Although it is located not in the city center, you can get to the main attractions of Eindhoven in 10 minutes by car. Book your stay here.
  • Little Grand – spacious and comfortable apartment in the city center. For people who like comfort, but also not to spend time on getting to the most interesting places in the city. Book it online here
  • Crown Inn – stylish hotel in the heart of Eindhoven. Minimalistic, clean, yet very comfortable. Book a room here
  • NH Collection Eindhoven Center – my top choice, the most luxury and comfortable option in the city center. It is a 5-star hotel of a well-known international chain of hotels NH Hotel Group. Book your room here .

Another way to find some good accommodation in Eindhoven is Airbnb . If you don’t have an account, use this link to get 32 euro off your first trip .

It was my list of the best things to do in Eindhoven if you have one day or more. As you can see, the city is very interesting to visit at least for a short time. And make sure you don’t wait for your connecting train at the train station .   ?  Have a great trip!

Check my weekend guide to Amsterdam or read about my adventures on a trip to Belgium and Holland .

Really? There is a Panasonic Stadium and Philips Museum? This is cool. Never heard this thing before.

Yes, that’s right 🙂

Eindhoven: What to do in one day in Eindhoven, The Netherlands

One of the most underrated Dutch cities is Eindhoven. This is one of the most special places and cities to visit in The Netherlands and Eindhoven has plenty of must do’s and sees. Discover the best and most fun things to do in one day in Eindhoven, Noord- Brabant, The Netherlands here.

Eindhoven is one of the more ‘modern’ Dutch cities in The Netherlands. You won’t see hundreds of century-old houses as in cities like Amsterdam, Alkmaar or Hoorn. But what you will see is modern or industrial looking buildings, street art and design. Eindhoven is famous for its Dutch design, for its industrial past and for being a creative hub.

Eindhoven is known as the city of lights. While Paris is most famous for being called the city of lights, Eindhoven takes the first place and is the true city of lights. Not only was the company Philips created here, but you can also find an annual festival called GLOW in Eindhoven that is worth a visit.

Eindhoven is industrial, with rough and charming edges. I didn’t expect to like Eindhoven as much as I did. But I did. It’s definitely recommended to stay at least one day in Eindhoven as there are plenty of things to see and do.

People first started living in the areas of Eindhoven around the 8th century. In 1233 Eindhoven gained it’s city rights from the duke Hendrik I of Brabant. The city of Eindhoven suffered immensely through the 80-year-war with the Spanish and other wars that followed, including the Second World War. As of now Eindhoven has around 223.000 inhabitants and is The Netherlands 5th largest city.

Enjoy the best breakfast of Eindhoven

At Happines Cafe in Eindhoven, you can eat breakfast the entire day and there is something on the menu for everyone. Whether you are looking for a great vegan breakfast in Eindhoven or pancakes. You can find sandwiches, salads, smoothie bowls and even burgers in this breakfast cafe in Eindhoven.

Nieuwe Emmasingel 9, 5611 AM Eindhoven

Another great breakfast restaurant in Eindhoven is Meneer De Boer. This is a place that has a lot of options as well, there’s even oatmeal to make sure you can start exploring the inspiring city Eindhoven with the utmost energy. Or what to think about the tuna melt? The food is great at both places, so it doesn’t matter where you can for your (late) breakfast or brunch in Eindhoven. Oh p.s. You won’t be able to find the menu of Meneer De Boer online, but you can find some of the food on their Instagram. They like to keep their food as a surprise for the visitors.

Keizersgracht 20, 5611 GD Eindhoven

Go on a self guided walking and cycling tour through Eindhoven

What to do in Eindhoven? By exploring the city with a tour. This is the best way to get a quick taste of the Dutch city of lights. The crazy people will do this entire tour walking. You know those people who say ‘oh, you can walk this’. That’s me. And it’s what I did in Eindhoven. It wasn’t fun. I do not recommend you to walk through the entire city of Eindhoven as some parts are pretty far away from each other.

Instead, you should rent a bike and explore Eindhoven the best way possible. You can walk through the small centre of Eindhoven where the main church, Philips museum and shopping streets are located. But that’s all I would walk. And that’s where we will start our self guided walking tour of Eindhoven as well. You can decide for yourself whether you’d want to take your bike straight away, or if you want to walk through the city centre of Eindhoven first before you dive deeper into Eindhoven.

Eindhoven is very famous within The Netherlands for its incredible street art. For a very good reason. The artists are incredibly talented and the art is breathtaking. In this cycling tour of Eindhoven, you will see all the highlights of Eindhoven as well as the best places to see street art and the best parks. You will end the first part of the tour in the industrial and upcoming area of Strijp-S. You can also choose to go through the city of Eindhoven by public transport, but it will take you a bit longer to get to certain places.

We start the tour through Eindhoven from your breakfast spot. From here you will go towards the Bergstraat , which is one of the few ‘cute’ streets of Eindhoven. Then you will walk to Kazerne , which is a restaurant and design exhibition centre in one that I really recommend you to visit.

Continue your tour through Eindhoven with a visit to the St. Catharinakerk (church). It’s opened from Tuesday until Saturday 10:00- 16:30 and on Sunday 11:00 – 16:30. After a visit to this church you head to the Ten Hagestraat and then to the Augustijnendreef 15. At the last spot you can find an old monastery called Klooster Mariënhage that dates back to the 15th century.

Now it’s time to head to the Emmasingel 31 , to see the first light bulb factory of Philips. When you have seen the little factory from the outside, it’s time to discover what Eindhoven in The Netherlands stands for beyond the company of Philips. And that is art. Discover the first street art of Eindhoven on this tour.

Just behind the Vue Cinema, at the Nieuwe Emmasingel, you will find street art. Not just any street art. Beautiful street art. The works change often, but I’ve yet to be disappointed with them. These artists have a true talent. It’s what I love about Eindhoven. Art, in the open air. At spots that you didn’t think of before. Discovering street art is one of the outdoor activities you have to do in Eindhoven.

Continue your cycling tour through Eindhoven with more street art. In fact, you can find most of the street art of Eindhoven in the next two spots I will guide you through in this travel guide for Eindhoven. Now you will go through a tunnel that is called ‘silly walks tunnel’.

The silly walks tunnel in Eindhoven is a tunnel that was decorated by artists of Studio Giftig. And they decided to the silly walks from Monty Python. Fun fact: John Cleese actually opened the transformed tunnel in Eindhoven. And this tunnel is definitely one of the things you have to see when you have 24 hours in Eindhoven.

Now it’s time to head to the ‘ Berenkuil’ . Here you will find the most street art of Eindhoven. It’s under bridges, on walls, on roofs. Wherever it’s allowed they will paint it. It’s quite far away from the center of Eindhoven city, but it’s one of the things you have to do and visit here.

Then you will cycle your way to the Evoluon in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. This building in Eindhoven is the weirdest and most special building in one. Its shape is very uncommon which makes it stand out. It’s made in the form of a discus and it is actually a conference center.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Philips de Jongh park in Eindhoven. This park was gifted by the Philips family to the city of Eindhoven back in 1920. It’s nowadays a very popular hang out and running spot in Eindhoven, especially when the weather is a bit nicer. There are often events held as well.

For more places to visit (including museums, restaurants and more), click here for a full map of Eindhoven and its things to do.

Go for a great lunch in Strijp S

After an interesting self-guided walking and cycling tour through Eindhoven, you’ve arrived in the industrial, edgy and modern looking neighbourhood of Strijp- S. It’s time for food. One of the best places and cafes to go for lunch in Eindhoven is Coffeelab STRP.

At Coffeelab STRPthey change the menu every three months to make sure you will never get bored with their food. And honestly, even if they hadn’t changed the menu you will still be coming back to this great cafe. You can eat breakfast and lunch here at Coffeelab STRPin Strijp- S. They have everything. From great coffee and tea to sandwiches and home-made soup. And plenty of more. If you’re looking for a great vegan breakfast or lunch cafe in Eindhoven, then you will also love Coffeelab STRP. Not to mention that the interior and exterior are both incredible, which is a big plus.

Leidingstraat 45, 5617 AJ Eindhoven

Discover the artsy and industrial area of Eindhoven: Strijp S

One of the things to do in Eindhoven is to discover Strijp- S. This industrial and upcoming neighbourhood is filled with art spaces, great restaurants and plenty of more things. If you ask me ‘what is Eindhoven known for’, then it will be Philips, street art, Dutch Design and Strijp- S. You won’t find many places in The Netherlands that are similar to Strijp-S, which makes this area of Eindhoven extra special and interesting.

Explore Vershal Het Veem

One other must do in Eindhoven is to bring a visit to Vershal Het Veem. You can find amazing Indonesian, Mexican and other food here. You can do groceries here, go for breakfast, lunch or dinner, visit a brewery, buy fresh nuts and plenty of other things. Your nostrils will thank you for the visit.

Vershal Het Veem is almost completely accessible for wheelchair users. There are only a few parts left that aren’t completely accessible and those are currently being changed to become accessible.

Torenallee 86-02, 5617 BE Eindhoven

Visit the Pastryclub

One thing that shouldn’t miss on your Eindhoven itinerary is a visit to the Pastryclub. The Pastryclub is a patisserie, chocolaterie, confectionery,  salon de thé, ice cream parlor and tasting room in one. You can also take part in workshops or classes. If you’re looking for things to buy in Eindhoven then you’re in for a treat at the Pastryclub. Buy and eat a little bit of everything (highly recommend you do) or just admire the beautiful buildings and shops.

Explore Mu artspace

If you ask me, what is there to see in Eindhoven? Then I will answer you probably with art. A lot of art. Mu artspace is located in Strijp- S and the perfect place to get some artsy inspiration. Here you will find exhibitions of a lot of talented artists and you will learn more about ‘what art is and what art can be’. At MU they have a very interesting platform for creatives to come with challenging and thoughtful art and its definitely worth a vist. Click here for more information about MU artspace.

Enjoy the food at Radio royaal

Radio Royaal in Eindhoven is one of the best restaurants, in my opinion. And if you’re planning on staying in the Strijp-S area for one day in Eindhoven as there are a lot of things to do, then I can recommend you to eat here or at one of the other surrounding places. Not only is it located in a perfect, modern and industrial building. The staff, the food and the cosy atmosphere (even though the building is pretty big) are a golden combination.

Ketelhuisplein 10, 5617 AE Eindhoven

Eat your heart out at Ketelhuis

Ketelhuis is located in a building next to the one where you can find Radio Royaal and in the middle of Strijp-S. The building was built to generate electricity and compressed air in 1929. And when the industry left, all there was left was a building. But luckily many entrepreneurs and the council of Eindhoven saw something in this area and building. At Ketelhuis you can find two floors that have two restaurants, a bar (with some of the best cocktails of Eindhoven) and a bakery. For more information about Ketelhuis click here.

Ketelhuisplein 1, 5617 AE Eindhoven

Visit one of the many museums of Eindhoven

There are some great museums that you can visit in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. But one of the best museums to visit in Eindhoven is the Philips Museum. Eindhoven is well- known for being the birthplace of the company Philips. It is one of Eindhovens best attractions.

Philips Museum

As I’ve said before, in Eindhoven you can find the Philips Museum. Gerard Philips started the company Philips at the current location of the Philips Museum. You will discover how a small manufacturer of incandescent lamps developed into a leading global company. You can visit the old factory where Gerard Philips developed the first Philips incandescent lamp more than a century ago as well as visit plenty of interesting exhibitions. For everyone who wants to know more about how Eindhoven became the Dutch City of Lights, I would definitely recommend you to visit this museum in Eindhoven.

Some other museums you can visit in Eindhoven are Eindhoven Museum , Van Abbemuseum and the Daf Museum.

Eat your heart out in the best food market of The Netherlands

What is one thing you must do in Eindhoven you ask me? Visiting Downtown Gourmet Market. This is the best food market in The Netherlands. I’m aware that’s a big word, but I’m not afraid to tell you the honest truth. For the perfect dinner in Eindhoven, you shouldn’t go to typical restaurants. When you visit the Downtown Gourmet Market in Eindhoven you can choose from 21 individual eateries that are located around two central bars and a social hub.

You will find incredible Indonesian food here in Eindhoven, but also great Indian food and Turkish food. Including many others. Not only is the food to die for at this food market, but the atmosphere here is great as well. Whether you’re visiting alone, with friends or with family, you will be happy that you’ve visited Downtown Gourmet Market.

Card is only accepted as payment. For more information (and opening times) about Downtown Gourmet Market click here.

Finish the evening with a drink

I personally like to finish a great day of exploring a brand new city or area with a drink. Whether it has alcohol in it or not. Just some refreshments to finish a very successful and fun day. You can find plenty of great bars and cafes in Eindhoven to go for a drink. I’ve included two below. One of which is a sky bar that has the best view of Eindhoven, the other one is a very casual and cosy place that offers the best craft beers of Eindhoven.

Sky bar Vane

This sky bar in Eindhoven is opened 7 days a week and will make everyone happy that is fond of beautiful city views. Personally I’m a big fan of seeing a city from above, especially when the sun is slowly setting and it sets the city on fire. The cocktails at this bar in Eindhoven are truly great, no other words needed. The place is a bit on the expensive side though, but I would still recommend it, even if it’s just for the view. Click here for more information about Sky bar Vane.

Vestdijk 5, 5611 CA Eindhoven

Van Moll Brouwerij

In 2013 Van Moll brew pub was opened in Eindhoven and they are known for serving the best and most special craft beers of Eindhoven. But one extra interesting thing to know about Van Moll is that they have their own flavour lab, where everyone can sample their creations. They love experimenting with flavours at Van Moll to find the next best thing. You can find a fixed selection of staple beers and a very varied range of specialty beers. Besides that, you can find the typical Dutch ‘gezelligheid’ at this beer cafe in Eindhoven. Add great beer and gezelligheid and you will be having an incredible evening.

Other fun and unusual things to do in Eindhoven, The Netherlands

There are plenty of other fun and free things to do in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Eindhoven isn’t a big receiver of tourism in The Netherlands, but there are plenty of things to see in Eindhoven city centre and beyond. Discover some of the unknown attractions and activities in Eindhoven here.

Visit the TAC

In Eindhoven, The Netherlands, you can find many points of interest. The Temporary Art Centre (TAC) in Eindhoven is not only a great place to go for a drink during the nice weather, as they have a great bar here, but you can also visit several art exhibitions for free.

Go to a football game in Eindhoven

One of the most known buildings of Eindhoven is for sure the Philips football stadium of PSV. Not only can you find some nice graffiti on the wall next to the train rails near the stadium, but the best way to experience the local culture is to be surrounded by locals. During a football game from PSV, especially against AJAX , AZ and Feyenoord, you won’t be bored.

Discover the sustainable market of Eindhoven

At the Wilhelminaplein (square) you can find a cosy, small market every weekend. This market is focused on sustainability and you will discover the nicest fresh products here. It takes place every Saturday from 10:00 – 16:00.

Visit the Observatorium and do some stargazing in Eindhoven

You can have a look at the universe in the Dr. A.F. Philips Observatorium in the Stadswandelpark in Eindhoven. Once a month they open the doors for the public so you can discover the universe beyond the earth as well as show you around the observatory. Click here for more information and dates of the observatory in Eindhoven.

Have a look at the watermill that was painted by Vincent van Gogh

De Genneper Watermolen is an important monument in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. This monument is actually painted by many famous Dutch painters such as Vincent van Gogh and Anton Pieck. Unfortunately the mill isn’t that close to the centre of Eindhoven. However, if you’re by bike, I would recommend you to just do a quick detour to have a look at the century-old monument. It opens on Wednesday & Sunday 12:00 – 16:00. And Saturday 13:00 – 16:00.

Visit the St- Catharina graveyard in Eindhoven

It might sound a bit spooky, but I like to visit unusual places in Eindhoven and other cities that I visit. Within the Sint Catharina Kerkhof you can find around 1600 graves. But what makes this a special place is that quite a few of them are marks from the rich past of Eindhoven. It is opened during the summer from 09:00 – 19:00 and autumn/winter/spring 09:00 – 17:00.

These are some of the most beautiful graves you can find in this graveyard in Eindhoven and they all date back to the 1800s

Most important and must visit festivals of Eindhoven

There are many annual events that take place in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Whether you’re familiar with them or not, they are all worth a visit.

Lichtfestival Glow

Besides the artworks there are plenty of side events and you can find unique and innovative works of art that are created by young talents.

Click here for more information about the Lightfestival Glow

Celebrate Carnival

Carnival, or carnaval in Dutch, is celebrated annually around February/March. Eindhoven is turned into Lampegat and people will dress up. It’s one big party. People eat ‘ worstenbroodjes ‘ and drink beer all day long. But my favourite thing is that everyone is celebrating, friendly and you’ll feel like you’ve been adopted into one, big family.

Dutch Design Week

During Dutch Design Week the city of Eindhoven is flooded with creatives. This event concentrates on the design of the future and the future of design. It’s the biggest design event in Northern Europe and there will be more than 350.000 visitors. In more than 110 locations across Eindhoven you can find exhibitions, festivities, lectures and many other things. You will find the work and ideas of more than 2600 designer and it takes place on the third and fourth week of October.

This is the biggest graffiti festival in the world and it takes place in Eindhoven. I told you were you can find the most street art of Eindhoven right? Well, the berenkuil is also the location for this graffiti festival. The Step in the Arena festival has an international line up and thousands of visitors. This festival in Eindhoven takes place the first of second weekend of June: in 2022 it takes place on 4th and 5th of June at Berenkuil in Eindhoven.

How to get to Eindhoven

Getting to the exciting city of Eindhoven isn’t hard at all. I will explain how you can get to Eindhoven from several places in The Netherlands, but for the up to date time schedules please visit 9292.nl.

From Amsterdam :  It’s very easy to get to Eindhoven, The Netherlands, from Amsterdam by either bus or train. I would suggest using the train as I personally think the train is a better mode of transport. However, that also comes with a price. Using the train from Eindhoven is more expensive than going by bus.

To get from Eindhoven to Amsterdam or from Amsterdam to Eindhoven you can take six trains every hour. Four of those are direct trains, which means that you don’t have to transfer to another train. It will take you around 1 hour and 20 minutes to get from Eindhoven to Amsterdam by train.

If you want to visit and go to Eindhoven by bus, then I would recommend you to visit the websites of either Flixbus or AirExpressBus .

From Utrecht :  To get to Eindhoven from Utrecht you can also use AirExpressBus. Or you can take six direct trains every hour, that will take you into Eindhoven or Utrecht in 50 minutes.

From Rotterdam :  The best way to get to Eindhoven from Rotterdam is also by train. You can take 2 direct trains every hour from Eindhoven Station. Look for the intercity train in the direction of Den Haag Centraal. Get out at Rotterdam Centraal. This will take you around one hour.

Click here if you are taking flights to Eindhoven Airport in The Netherlands and would like to know what restaurants you can find there, as well as other things to know about this airport. And of course, things to do or hotels near Eindhoven Airport.

You won’t be able to include everything I wrote in this itinerary for Eindhoven in one day. But if you want to spend a weekend in Eindhoven, then you’ll be coming much closer to finishing this bucket list with things to do in Eindhoven. If you’ve visited Eindhoven already and/or if you’ve used this article as a guideline, please let me know what you thought of these must do’s and sees in Eindhoven and what you thought of this modern Dutch city.

If you’re still debating whether Eindhoven is worth visiting, then I will only say that you have to give the city a chance. There are many unusual things you can do in one day in Eindhoven. There are things to do that you didn’t even think were possible in a Dutch city.

You will love the following article if you’re looking for other beautiful places to visit in The Netherlands and they are without the crowds of tourists. Click here for a 2 day itinerary to explore Amsterdam off the beaten path with local tips. One thing I, as a local, would absolutely recommend you to do in Amsterdam is to go on a guided tour. Not a free walking tour, but one that will bring you closer to the Dutch people and culture. Have a look here at the best guided tours of Amsterdam.

But I would also recommend you to explore the South of The Netherlands more and one perfect city to visit is Maastricht. The atmosphere is completely different from any other city and I created a perfect one day itinerary for Maastricht here. If you’re looking for a great day trip from Eindhoven, then I would recommend you to visit the beautiful town of Bergen op Zoom. Share this article!

What To Do In One Day In Eindhoven | The Ultimate 24 Hour Guide!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

Eindhoven is the fifth-largest city in the Netherlands, located in the south of the country, not far from the Belgian border. Even so, the city is home to less than 250 thousand residents, many of whom are students or young professionals.

Eindhoven has largely flown under the map for tourism, ensuring a relaxed and local take on a Dutch city.

Eindhoven has the nickname the ‘City of Light’, but probably not for the reason you’d think. While it does have a higher density of creative lighting at night, the name comes from the association of the city with Philips, the famed lighting and electronics manufacturer.

The company has heavily invested in the city and influenced it significantly, with their touch seen nearly everywhere…

History And Character Of Eindhoven

Geography and climate, atmosphere and approach, culinary attractions, eindhoven in a day.

The written history of Eindhoven begins in 1232, when it started as only 170 houses surrounded by rampart walls, with a small castle just outside the fortifications. It grew with a reputation as a trading post, with weekly markets for regional farmers. It was also a common layover on the trade route between the prosperous regions of Holland and Liège.

Unfortunately, by the end of the 15th century, a few hundred years of dark times began. Starting in 1486, Eindhoven was sacked, burned, plundered and pillaged; they would eventually rebuild by 1502, but it wouldn’t last very long. The city would fall at least another three times before it was razed again during the French occupation.

24 hours in Eindhoven

Through to the 19th century, it remained only a small settlement until the industrial revolution arrived. Textile and tobacco industries brought initial wealth back to the city and would remain as a large portion of the economy well into the 20th century. But it was the founding of Philips Lightbulb Factory in 1891 that would truly transform Eindhoven into what it is today.

The population of the city would more than double between the World Wars, but Eindhoven had not seen its last assault. One of the first air raids in 1942 targeted the Philips factory, killing 148 civilians.

Further swaths of the city would see large-scale destruction by air raids throughout the war, however the rebuilding paid little regard to historical heritage, with very little original architecture remaining.

24 hours in Eindhoven

Eindhoven was originally settled at the confluence of the Dommel, Gender, and Tongelreep streams. Considering the city was built only on sandy elevations, flooding was not uncommon in the city center through the first centuries.

The Dommel was eventually redirected with a dam after the war, but recent efforts have tried to reinstate the original paths of the streams, bringing them through the middle of the city.

Like other cities in the Lowlands, Eindhoven has an oceanic climate. However, the inland location results in warmer summers and colder winters than the highly-populated coastal Dutch cities. However, the trade-off is overall less precipitation throughout the year than the coastal compatriots.

The summer is usually a comfortable 15-25°C, but that may be changing. The record high temperature of 40°C was recorded only in 2019, on July 25th. On the other end of the spectrum, the winter can present cold snaps that fall as low as -15°C for a few days.

However, the temperature is normally mild and only rarely dips below zero. The temperate days mean that snow does not stay around for long.

one day in Eindhoven

The renowned electronics and engineering industries has attracted world-wide talent, with more than 30% of residents with foreign ancestry.

The largest groups that are represented are Turkish and Indonesian, the latter owing to the Dutch colonial days. The result is a cosmopolitan city that largely avoids any specific characteristics or personality.

While only about 5000 people like in the city-proper, within the boundaries drawn by an ancient moat, there are at least four large institutions for higher and adult learning, among many other private schools for courses and training. The student population has driven the popularity of bars, with Stratumseind being the largest ‘pub street’ in the Netherlands .

one day in Eindhoven

The overall young and educated residents of Eindhoven has led to a plethora of art spread through public spaces in the city, extending also to both performance art and busking. The Stadswandelpark has over thirty pieces of modern art on display. The city itself is also very green, more than any other Dutch city, with over 30% of the area being green-space.

The young atmosphere also applies to the nightlife, with Eindhoven hosting at least a dozen festivals each year. A particular example also celebrates Philips: the light festival, named GLOW, thanks place in the cultural neighborhood of Strijp-S.

In an equally ‘alternative’ vein, there are at least four brothels located in the city, with Eindhoven also having a Red Light District in Baekelandplein , akin to Amsterdam.

While Eindhoven used to have a bad reputation for theft and robbery, efforts since 2011 have drastically reduced crime rates to below the Dutch average.

stopover in Eindhoven

The culinary vibe of Eindhoven is best described as young and hip. University students often drive up the character of local establishments, while a high population of young professionals ensures a level of quality they have come to expect. Culinary fads abound while restaurants compete on menus, atmosphere and branding.

The city is not without its recognized institutions, with the Michelin Guide well-represented given such a small population. There are two 1-star locations in the city center – one is presented below as an option for lunch! – and a whopping three two-star restaurants are located in the neighborhoods surrounding the medieval center.

If your time is scarce in the city, consider simply grabbing something excellent to eat.

stopover in Eindhoven

If you’re short on time, make sure to check out the Stratumseind and the nearby Sint-Catharinakerk . Food and drinks are plentiful in this area, as are modern and historical sights of the Dutch city.

Steentjeskerk : This church built in 1919 is arguably one of the standout historical buildings in the city, originally named after Saint Anthony. It eschewed the prevailing Gothic preference of the day, for a more Romanesque architecture. From 1984 to 2012, it housed a museum that has since been moved to the site of the Eindhoven Museum. Since 2001, it’s been designated as a Dutch national monument.

Witte Dame/Bruine Heer/Roze Baby (‘White Lady’/‘Brown Gentleman’/‘Pink Baby’): A trio of buildings as monuments to the Philips legacy. The ‘Lady’ is a former Philips lamp factory; the ‘Gentleman’ the former Philips main offices; the ‘Baby’ is Philips’ first light bulb factory. The impressive buildings now house museums, shops, commercial space and many other things.

stopover in Eindhoven

Lichttoren (Light Tower): The crowning glory of the Philips legacy on the architecture of Eindhoven is their ‘Light Tower’. It’s a modern, hexagonal tower in the functionalist style, gleaming white and covered in windows. It was built in stages and finished in 1921, serving as the Philips headquarters. Now brightly illuminated with LED lights, it’s a sight best seen at night.

The Philips influence has stretched throughout the city, importing the best engineering and technology minds outside of the San Francisco Bay Area. The top talent has brought the entertainment and culinary needs to match, with multiple Michelin-starred establishments around the city.

Wiesen: Proudly displaying one Michelin Star, this lovely eatery is open for lunch. It offers patio seating in the summertime and highlights local produce year-round. With lunch starting at only €45, Wiesen is a relatively affordable foray into haute cuisine. A reservation is suggested, for lunch or dinner, but same-day accommodation is usually available outside peak season.

Eetcafé Spijker: The Dutch version of a classic Diner experience, this cozy establishment offers affordable fare at both lunch and dinner. Their soups and sandwiches are always sure to satisfy, and their vast selection of beer, wine and spirits ensures there’s an option for everyone. The Diner is consistently rated in the upper echelon of local restaurants.

Just across the Stratumseind , you’ve likely already noticed the stately building nearby.

highlights of Eindhoven

Sint-Catharinakerk (St. Catherine’s Church): Marking the head of the Stratumseind , lies a magnificent neo-Gothic church constructed in 1867 on the site of an older medieval structure of the same name. The highlight of its design are the pair of towers, named after David and Maria, standing at an impressive 73 meters and inspired by French Gothic cathedrals.

Van Abbemuseum: A celebration of modern and contemporary art – based in an equally modern building – it was established in 1936 to bring the styles to Eindhoven. It houses more than 2500 pieces ranging from video to canvas; it is home to the largest collection of art by El Lissitzky. It also proudly displays works from Picasso, Mondrian and Kandinsky.

Eindhoven Museum: Only about one kilometer south of the historical center, the museum is an open-air archaeological ode to the Iron and Middle Ages. It’s a living museum with demonstrations and recreations of every-day life in the time periods. The weekends and holiday seasons are the best time to visit, weekdays are distinctly oriented toward visiting school children.

The city of Eindhoven, like its residents, is young and striving to be something. While a distinct personality of the city is hard to grasp, it is nonetheless an excellent place to spend the day.
