Une oeuvre intemporelle

Créée par l'artistejaponais Taro Okamoto, la Tour du Soleil est à l'expositionuniverselle de 1970 ce que la Tour Eiffel est à l'exposition de1889 : un symbole ! Aujourd'hui située dans le parccommémoratif de l'exposition à Suita dans la préfecture d'Osaka,la tour a longtemps été fermée au public. En mars2018, elle a finalement ré-ouvert ses portes...

L'expositionuniverselle de 1970 s'est tenue à Suita dans la banlieue d'Osaka .Une première pour le Japon qui n'avait jusqu'alors jamais eu lachance d'accueillir l'illustre événement.

Dans une périoded'expansion technologique, l'exposition a vu ses participantsrivaliser d’ingéniosité. Et notamment le pays hôte, dont lethème ''Progrès et Harmonie pour l'Humanité'' a inspiré denombreuses œuvres futuristes.

Parmi elles, la Tour du Soleil, une œuvre de 70 mètres de long créée par l'artiste Taro Okamoto, a retenu l'attention de tous et est rapidement devenue  le symbole de l'exposition d'Osaka à travers le monde .

Placée à l'intérieur du bâtiment principal de l'exposition, sa grande taille la faisait dépasser du toit !  Une petite particularité qui au moment de sa construction n'a pas échappé à l'écrivain japonais Sakyo Komatsu qui s'en est inspiré pour écrire son roman érotique ''La saison du soleil'' . Séduit par le travail de l'auteur, Okamoto baptisera alors cette œuvre la ''Tour du Soleil''.

Une œuvrephilosophique…

Fidèle à lathématique de l'exposition, la Tour du Soleil est une véritableode au progrès .

Composée d'un troncde 70 mètres de haut sur 20 mètres de diamètre , la structure blanchecomporte deux bras de 20 mètres de long et trois visagesénigmatiques qui symbolisent le temps qui passe  :uneface noire située au dos de la tour, dite ''le soleil noir'' pourreprésenter le passé , ''la face du soleil'' , unvisage au creux des bras de la statue qui symbolise le présent ,et ''le masque d'or'' , une face dorée située au sommet del’œuvre dont les yeux grands ouverts s'illuminent la nuit pourreprésenter le futur .

À noter égalementqu' un autre visage était présent au moment de l'expositionuniverselle , ''le soleil sous-terrain'' , une face placéeau sous-sol de la tour qu'on a retiré de la composition juste aprèsl'exposition pour pouvoir déplacer l’œuvre plus facilement.

Mais le clou duspectacle était sans nul doute l'intérieur de la tour qui abritaitune œuvre tout aussi intrigante que la tour en elle-même :l'arbre de vie.

D'une hauteur de 45 mètres , cette structure en forme d' arbre psychédélique était décorée de petites sculptures réalisées par le studio d'effets spéciaux japonais ''Tsuburaya Productions''.

L'arbre s'élevait alors vers le sommet de la tour et  les visiteurs pouvaient l'admirer dans son ensemble en empruntant des escalators  situés tout autour de la structure. Une jolie métaphore qui montrait que l'homme marchait de pair avec le progrès vers un futur brillant.

... À redécouvrir aujourd'hui

La tour ayant étémise en extérieur juste après l'exposition universelle, l’œuvred'Okamoto s'est détériorée avec les années.

Installéeaujourd'hui au cœur du parc commémoratif de l'exposition, latour a été restaurée plusieurs fois . Et bien qu' ellerestait officiellement fermée , la Tour du Soleil étaitouverte de temps à autre au public lors d’événementsspéciaux. De brèves lueurs d'espoir qui laissaient entrevoir unepossible ré-ouverture dans les années à venir.

C'est désormaischose faite ! Depuis mars dernier, l'intérieur de la tourest de nouveau officiellement accessible à tous .

Escalatorsplus contemporains, jeux de son et lumière , lesvisiteurs peuvent redécouvrir l'arbre de vie et son architecturefuturiste (pour l'époque) qui a donné ses lettres de noblesse àl'exposition.

Un spectacle quisemblait très attendu, puisqu' une liste d'attente de plusieursmois est nécessaire pour pouvoir obtenir son ticket d'entrée.

Un succès quipourrait bien profiter à la Tour du Soleil et accélérer lademande faite par la préfecture d'Osaka pour faire entrer la tour aupatrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO .

🌞 l'œuvre excentrique de taro okamoto.

La Tour du Soleil est la sculpture emblématique du parc commémoratif de l’Expo ’70, situé à Suita en périphérie nord d'Osaka. Monumentale et atypique, elle est signée de l'artiste Taro Okamoto et se baptise en japonais Taiyo no to . Depuis 2018, il est de nouveau possible de visiter son intérieur.

En 1970, la ville d' Osaka organisa la 1ère exposition universelle en Asie et 55 ans plus tard, l'Exposition universelle de 2025 se tiendra de nouveau dans la baie du Kansai . Entre-temps, la ville a également hébergé l'Exposition horticole internationale de 1990 sur le site du parc Tsurumi Ryokuchi.

De l'évènement culturel Expo ’70 qui s'est tenu à Suita au nord d'Osaka, il reste aujourd'hui un vaste parc arboré surmonté de la fameuse et authentique Tour du Soleil 🌞, Taiyo no to en japonais . Cette sculpture totalement atypique et au design excentrique si marquant est l'une des œuvres majeures de l'artiste Taro Okamoto (1911 - 1996).

Dotée de 3 visages extérieurs , 2 à l'avant et 1 à l'arrière, la Tour du Soleil illustre à l'époque le thème principal de l'Exposition universelle de 1970, "Progrès et harmonie pour l'humanité", avec :

• le Visage du Soleil ( Face of the Sun en anglais) au centre qui marque le présent ;
• le Masque   😷 Doré ( Golden Mask en anglais) situé au sommet qui représente le futur ;
• et le Soleil Noir ( Black Sun en anglais) à l'arrière de la statue qui évoque le passé .

Encerclée à l'origine par la structure baptisée The Big Roof ("Grand toit") et signée de l'architecte Kenzo Tange (1913 - 2005), elle se dresse désormais seule au milieu d'une vaste pelouse, ce qui permet de se rendre compte de ses dimensions, qui sont les suivantes :

• Hauteur totale : environ 70 mètres ;
• Diamètre du corps : 20 mètres ;
• Longueur de chacun des bras : 25 mètres.

La Tour du Soleil sert par ailleurs de décor au manga 20th Century Boys de Naoki Urasawa.

L'Arbre de Vie de nouveau en explosion

La visite intérieure de la tour est de nouveau ouverte au public depuis mars 2018 . Sur réservation préalable , il est ainsi possible de (re)découvrir une partie de l'exposition initiale de 1970. En effet, on y retrouve :

• l'Arbre de Vie ( Tree of Life en anglais ou Seimei no Ki en japonais) qui retrace l' évolution de la vie et des espèces , des premiers organismes unicellulaires jusqu’à l'Homme de Cro-Magnon ;
• ainsi que le 4ème visage caché de la tour baptisé le Soleil Souterrain ( Underground Sun en anglais). À noter : la sculpture actuelle est une reproduction, l'originale ayant été égarée lors du démontage de l'exposition universelle et n'a jamais été retrouvée.

Sous un éclairage majoritairement bleu et rouge qui symbolise la circulation sanguine, les visiteurs sont invités à pénétrer dans un univers fantasmagorique qui bouillonne de vie et s'illustre par une explosion de couleurs et de formes . Celles et ceux qui ne seraient pas sensibles au design de l'enveloppe extérieure de la tour seront peut-être séduit(e)s par ce qu'ils verront à l'intérieur.

La visite consiste à faire l'ascension de l'Arbre de Vie qui se déploie jusqu'à 41 mètres de hauteur, par le biais d' escaliers (au nombre de 5 pour 145 marches au total) ou d' escalators pour les personnes à mobilité réduite notamment. D'une durée de 30 minutes, le parcours s'effectue dans un seul sens de circulation avec une entrée et une sortie spécifiques. On peut voir jusque dans les bras de la sculpture, même s'il n'est plus possible d'y aller. Pour des questions de sécurité, il n'est autorisé de prendre des photos qu'au rez-de-chaussée.

Les explications se montrent plutôt bien réalisées et l'on en apprend plus sur la construction et la symbolique de la tour à son inauguration. On encourage par ailleurs les amateurs de Taro Okamoto à visiter le musée dédié à son art et situé dans sa ville natale de Kawasaki , au sud de Tokyo .

Sans être incontournable, la découverte de la Tour du Soleil, intégrée au parc commémoratif de l'Expo '70 qui suit les floraisons saisonnières, propose une sortie originale qui change de l'ambiance du centre-ville d'Osaka. Le trajet en monorail  🚝 est agréable à effectuer et une fois sur place, on trouve également le récent centre commercial LaLaport EXPOCITY ainsi que le Musée national d'ethnologie pour compléter une journée d'excursion à Suita.

Cirque du Soleil, the world's premier Canadian live entertainment group returns in February 2023 for the first time in 5 years to Japan for ‘Daihatsu Alegria-In A New Light-.’

‘Alegría’ has become one of the most beloved Cirque du Soleil shows by mesmerizing over 14 million spectators in 255 cities in over 19 years of touring. In 2019, to celebrate its 25th anniversary, ‘Alegría’ was restaged in a whole new light, ensuring that all its components such as stage direction, acrobatics and costumes would be as inspiring for today’s audiences as they were at the time of the original creation.　　

In Japan, ‘Alegría’ was seen by 670,000 spectators in Tokyo and Fukuoka in 1996. In 2004, ‘Alegría 2’ was held in Tokyo, Fukuoka, Nagoya, and Osaka, attracting 1.14 million spectators. The show is the first step for Cirque du Soleil to revive its overseas productions under the ‘Big Top’ tent, since performance cancellations due to the global pandemic of COVID-19. D’une hauteur de 70 mètres, la Tour du Soleil (太陽の塔 Taiyō no Tō) est une œuvre d’art massive conçue par l’artiste Okamoto Tarō dans le cadre du Pavillon thématique de l’Exposition universelle d’Osaka en 1970.

Celle-ci a laissé une grande impression sur les nombreux visiteurs (environ 9,2 millions de personnes) qui ont visité le pavillon thématique pendant l’Expo de 1970, pénétrant dans la tour par le sol et sortant sur le grand toit qui l’entourait alors.

À l’intérieur de la tour se trouve l’Arbre de la Vie, une sculpture d’une hauteur d’environ 41 mètres, qui présente l’évolution de la vie au travers de 183 modèles, allant des formes de vie les plus anciennes comme l’amibe, aux poissons et dinosaures, pour arriver à la fin à la forme humaine.

La tour du soleil a trois faces, l’avenir étincelant représenté au sommet de la tour par le masque d’or, le présent sous la forme de la face du soleil à l’avant et, à l’arrière, le soleil noir qui représente le passé.

Elle symbolise le cœur de la vie et le cœur de la célébration, tout en représentant l’énergie de tout ce qui est créé : le passé, le présent et l’avenir.

Au moment de l’exposition universelle d’Osaka, en 1970, il y avait également une exposition au niveau souterrain sous la tour. Dans cet espace, un prétendu 4ème visage a été exposé. Mesurant 3 mètres de haut et 11 mètres de large, celui-ci était appelé le Soleil des Enfers, exprimant le monde spirituel intérieur des humains. Lorsque l’exposition a pris fin, ce dernier visage a disparu sans laisser de trace.

Après l’exposition de 1970, l’intérieur de la Tour du Soleil a été fermé au public et laissé à l’abandon. Depuis près de cinquante ans, résistant aux intempéries et aux tremblements de terre, la Tour du Soleil est devenue le symbole d’Osaka et du parc commémoratif Expo’70 .

Après une longue période de rénovation, l’intérieur de la tour du soleil est de nouveau ouvert au public depuis le mois de mars 2018. Une reconstruction du 4eme visage a aussi été recréée et est de nouveau exposée au public.

Pour la visiter, il est nécessaire de réserver un billet sur le site internet : https://taiyounotou-expo70.jp/en/ . C’est l’unique moyen d’y accéder. Vous ne pourrez pas obtenir de billet au guichet. Soyez également prévoyant, car il y a beaucoup de demande et il faut s’y prendre bien en avance pour trouver un créneau de visite libre. (3 semaines dans mon cas)

La visite vous plonge dans le passé, en 1970 pour visiter l’intérieur de la tour du soleil : l’arbre de la vie tel qu’il était à l’époque. Malheureusement, aucune photo n’est autorisée à l’intérieur de la tour, donc je ne pourrai pas illustrer mes paroles avec autre chose que la brochure fournie au début de la visite, ainsi que les maquettes de la tour que j’avais pu observer lors de l’exposition Okamoto Tarō au Abeno Harukas Art Musuem .

La visite commence ainsi par une galerie de croquis d’Okamoto Taro lors de son travail de conception de la tour. On voit ainsi l’évolution de ses idées pour enfin arriver au résultat final. La galerie nous amène sur une salle dans laquelle est exposé la reproduction du 4eme visage, celui disparu après l’exposition de 1970. A partir de là, nous devons patienter un peu avant d’accéder à l’arbre de la vie. La visite se fait en groupe, accompagné d’un guide qui nous expliquera tout au long du parcours des anecdotes sur l’œuvre, son histoire et ses significations (en japonais uniquement).

Lorsque vient enfin le moment de visiter l’arbre de la vie, je me retrouve assez vite subjugué par le côté spectaculaire. Au pied de l’arbre, haut de ses 41 mètres, s’expose des dizaines de reproduction d’espèces symbolisant l’évolution de la vie. Au pied, on retrouve les espèces les plus anciennes, des amibes. Tout est mis en valeur grâce a des nombreux jeux de lumières. La visite s’effectue par palier, accessible grâce à des escaliers qui parcourent l’intérieur de la tour du soleil et permettent de rejoindre le sommet de l’arbre de la vie. A l’origine, en 1970, les escaliers étaient remplacés par des escalator. Mais pour des raisons de poids et de sécurité, il a été choisi de reconstruire les structures avec des escaliers.

Au fil des marches et des explications du guide, nous découvrons l’évolution de la vie, en passant par les poissons, les dinosaures, les mammifères pour enfin arriver à l’espèce humaine au sommet de l’arbre. La visite se termine par l’observation de l’intérieur des « bras » de la tour du soleil. En effet, lors de l’exposition universelle, la sortie de la tour se faisait via les bras au sommet de la tour. Ceux-ci donnaient sur un immense toit qui entourait alors la tour du soleil. Ce toit ayant aujourd’hui disparu, la sortie s’effectue grâce à un escalier qui nous ramène vers le sol, et une boutique souvenir remplie d’objet à l’effigie de la tour du soleil ou de son créateur, Okamoto Taro .

Pour tous ceux qui veulent replonger pendant un temps dans la magie de l’exposition universelle d’Osaka, la visite de la tour est un indispensable. J’ai personnellement pris énormément de plaisir à la visiter. Et vous pourrez également profiter du magnifique et immense parc commémoratif Expo’70 en attendant l’ Expo 2025 qui se tiendra de nouveau à Osaka .

Taro Okamoto, qui était le concepteur de la Tour du Soleil, est décédé récemment. Située dans le parc commémoratif de l’Exposition Universelle de 1970 et seul élément survivant de cette dernière, la Tour du Soleil est un monument incontournable de Osaka. D’ailleurs, les autorités japonaises ont fait la demande auprès de l’Unesco pour qu’elle soit inscrite au patrimoine de l’Humanité.

L'élément central de l'Exposition Universelle de 1970

Créée par l’architecte Taro Okamoto, la Tour du Soleil est le symbole de l’Exposition Universelle d’Osaka de 1970. Malgré un succès populaire, la tour ferme au public à l’issue de la manifestation. Elle doit son nom à l’écrivain de science-fiction Sakio Komatsu, car transperçant un toit, elle lui aurait rappelé un passage érotique du roman “La Saison du soleil”.

Le démontage du toit entourant la tour, en 1979, la rend alors entièrement visible. Elle est le dernier vestige de l’exposition après la destruction des différents pavillons. Laissée sans aucun entretien pendant près de 20 ans, elle se dégrade. Heureusement, en 1994, les autorités décident de rénover l’enveloppe externe de l’édifice.

L’intérieur, lui, restera fermé sauf à de rares occasions. Ce n’est que depuis 2018 que l’Arbre de vie, à l’intérieur de la tour, se visite de manière continue.

Les 3 soleils de la tour

Concept philosophique à remettre dans le contexte des années 70, les 3 soleils visibles sur la tour symbolisent l’évolution de l’Humanité.

D’abord, le soleil noir représente le passé et rappelle les exactions des hommes. Entre autres les guerres (nous sommes peu de temps après la Seconde Guerre mondiale).

Ensuite, le soleil blanc est l’image du présent (des années 70). Il est calme et serein, sûr de la volonté de renouveau de l’Humanité.

Enfin, le soleil doré se veut l’avenir. Sa forme d’antenne satellite rappelle l’espérance d’un avenir radieux grâce à la technologie.

L'Arbre de la vie

L’intérieur de la tour commence par le passage du soleil souterrain, installation artistique avec un soleil central animé par des jeux de lumière. C’est ici que les différents groupes de visiteurs attendent pour pénétrer au centre dans la tour.

L’Arbre de la vie est une immense oeuvre de 45 mètres de haut. Elle représente l’évolution de la vie au travers de nombreux éléments représentant, au bas de l’arbre, des cellules pour suivre l’évolution des espèces en passant par les mollusques, poissons, dinosaures jusqu’à l’homme. En haut de l’arbre, une échelle symbolise le futur, que personne ne peut prévoir.

Tower of the Sun

The Tower of the Sun is the iconic sculpture of the Expo'70 Commemorative Park located in Suita, in the northern suburb of Osaka. The unconventional monument was designed by artist Taro Okamoto and is called Taiyo no to in Japanese. Its inside has reopened to the visit in 2018.

Osaka hosted the 1rst Universal Exhibition in Asia in 1970, and 55 years later, the Kansai area will welcome the upcoming World Expo, Expo 2025 in Osaka Bay. In the meantime, the city also hosted 1990 International Horticultural Exposition at the Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park .

Today, of the great Expo’70 cultural event staged in Suita in the north of Osaka, remains a large, wooded park, towered by the famous and authentic Tower of the Sun, Taiyo no to in Japanese. This totally unconventional sculpture , with a characteristic eccentric design, is one of the major artworks by artist Taro Okamoto (1911 - 1996).

With 3 faces on its outer shell , 2 in the front and 1 in the back, the Tower of the Sun illustrated at the times the main theme of 1970 Universal Exhibition, "Progress and Harmony for Mankind", with:

• The Face of the Sun at the center, symbolizing the present times;
• The Golden Mask  😷 at the top, meaning the future ; and,
• The Black Sun , at the back of the statue to symbolize the past .

It was initially topped by a structure called The Big Roof designed by architect Kenzo Tange (1913 - 2005), but it is now standing alone in the middle of a vast lawn, which helps measure its dimensions:

• Total height: about 70 meters;
• Diameter of the body: 20 meters;
• Length of each arm: 25 meters.

On a side note, the Tower of the Sun is the setting of Naoki Urasawa’s manga 20th Century Boys.

The Tree of Life thriving again

Since March 2018 , the inside of the Tower has reopened to the visit as a museum . Upon reservation , the public can thus (re) discover part of the initial 1970’s exhibition. There are indeed:

• The Tree of Life (or Seimei no Ki in Japanese) that retraces the evolution of life and species, from the first unicellular organisms to the Cro-Magnons;
• As well as the 4th hidden face of the Tower , called the Underground Sun . Note that the current sculpture is a reproduction, as the original one was lost when dismantling the Universal Exhibition and was never recovered.

Under mainly blue and red lighting symbolizing blood circulation, visitors are invited to enter in a fantasy universe , full of life and materialized by an explosion of colors and shapes . Those who were not impressed by the outside design of the Tower might be charmed by its inside.

The visit consists in climbing in the Tree of Life , standing up to 41 meters high, by stairways (5 in total and 145 steps) or escalators , especially for people with reduced mobility. The tour lasts 30 minutes, and is a one-way itinerary , with a start and a finish. The view extends inside the sculpture’s arms, even if it is not possible to go there anymore. For safety reasons, taking pictures is only allowed at the ground floor.

Comments on the exhibits are rather well done and give insightful information on the construction and the symbolic meaning of the Tower at its inauguration. Additionally, we strongly encourage amateurs of Taro Okamoto’s artworks to visit the dedicated museum in Kawasaki, his hometown in the south of Tokyo .

While not a must-see, the Tower of the Sun and the seasonal flowerings of the Expo'70 Commemorative Park, offer an original destination for a change from Osaka’s downtown atmosphere. The trip in monorail  🚝 is pleasant, and the recent LaLaport EXPOCITY shopping mall, as well as the National Museum of Ethnology, provide for a full excursion day in Suita.

Inside The Tower of the Sun: Osaka's Weird and Wonderful Landmark

The Tower of the Sun, designed by the late artist Taro Okamoto, was made as part of the theme of the first Japan World Exposition (a.k.a. Osaka Expo) held in 1970. The interior of the tower has been reopened to the public in March 2018, the first time in 48 years. The Expo ’70 Commemorative Park , where this quirky landmark exists today, is bursting with nature . Let's have a look around this park and see what the Tower of the Sun looks like inside!

What is Osaka's Tower of the Sun?

Reservations required to enter the tower of the sun, access: getting to the tower of the sun, overwhelmed by the intensity of the “sun of the underworld”, a spiritual world beyond imagination, the tree of life is out of this world, so many sun towers in the museum shop, recommended facilities in the expo ’70 commemorative park.

The Tower of the Sun, which represents the Osaka Expo, is about 70m tall; the diameter of the base is about 20m, and each arm is about 25m long. It is the largest piece of work by Taro Okamoto. It was built as one of the theme buildings for the Osaka Expo and was planned to be demolished after the exposition. Since it was intended as a temporary installation, it was not open to the public for decades. With the request of revitalizing the legacy of the Osaka Expo increasing in recent years, the Tower of the Sun underwent earthquake resistance and other renovations, and the interior was opened to the public on March 19th, 2018.

According to what Taro Okamoto said, “The things I make are different from modernism. I went against the cool western modernism and it's opposing Japanese style, and aimed to build a crazy shrine that connects the primitive and contemporary.” The Tower of the Sun has three faces, two in the front and one in the back. The Face of the Sun in the center represents the present; the Golden Mask at the top, the future; and the Black Sun in the back, the past.

The Osaka Expo had the three themes of “Past, Present and Future,” centered around the Tower of the Sun. Many works were gathered from the world along with Okamoto’s artwork made for the Osaka Expo.

To enter the Tower of the Sun, you must make a reservation on the official website . You can make reservations up to 4 months in advance, and reception is on a first-come-first-serve basis. You can make a reservation for up to six people at a time. With its growing popularity, making a reservation has become difficult. If you figure out your travel dates, we recommend making a reservation as soon as possible. Entrance fees are 700 yen for high school students and above, 300 yen for elementary and Jr high school students, and free for children below elementary school (prices include tax, additional entrance fee to the Natural and Cultural Gardens is required). The interior route uses stairs, so we recommend comfortable walking shoes. People in wheelchairs and children under 4 can use the elevator to look around.

To reach the Tower of the Sun, get off at the Osaka Monorail Bamapaku-kinen-koen Station and walk about 10 minutes to reach the Natural and Cultural Gardens on the south side of the Expo ’70 Commemorative Park . Once you enter the garden (250 yen for adults; 70 yen for elementary and junior high students; includes admission to Natural and Cultural Gardens and Japanese Garden ) the tower will be right in front of you.

Go around the lawn surrounding the Tower of the Sun and head to the back of the tower. The entrance to the visitor's course is located at the bottom of the slope behind the tower.

Early summer of 1967, the Osaka Expo Association secretary-general visited Mr. Okamoto at his atelier in Aoyama and asked if he could be the “producer of the theme exhibition.” This was the event that leads up to the creation of the Tower of the Sun.

According to the guide, Mr. Okamoto didn’t accept the offer right away, but he was working on designs and drawings before he officially accepted the offer on July 7th, 1967. Some of the designs on display had dates from June 1967. About 3 months later, in September, the design of the Tower of the Sun was finalized.

Going down the hallway leads to a wide spacious area. An artwork that represents the corona (the aura of plasma that surrounds the sun) that is approximately 11m wide, and the Sun of the Underworld about 3m in diameter is placed in the center.

By using projection mapping to show images of the past on the Sun of the Underworld as a screen, it is replicating the world of “prayer,” part of the “Past: The World of Origin,” which Mr. Okamoto expressed during the expo.

Sun of the Underworld has a strong presence and numerous idols and masks. With the changing images and mystical music, it creates a fantasy world. Mr. Okamoto’s quote of “Art is magic” really matches the setting. Going further in, there was even a bigger space waiting for us!

An object that grows up and branches off like a tree. This is the Tree of Life, the symbolic work inside the Tower of the Sun.

The Tree of Life goes vertically through the tower. Along the tree, there are many objects placed or intertwined on branches. At the time of the Osaka Expo, there were 33 types 292 biological models, but currently, there are only 33 types 183 objects. Located at the root of the tree are protists like an amoeba. Going up objects such as trilobites, fish, dinosaurs, and humankind are on display. It is expressing the evolution of life.

The information plates on the models are the original plates. The extinct trilobites that lived during the Paleozoic era are on top of the plate. Ther are also prehistoric creatures that look like squids. You can find many ancient creatures all over the place, and the colorful and unique looks are breathtaking.

The guide told us that “to prepare for public viewing, the creatures were lowered and repaired, but the brontosaurus has never left the Tree of Life in 48 years.” Also inside the tower, the same unique music that was played during the Osaka Expo is still played. The music "Seimei no Sanka,” was composed by the late Toshiro Mayuzui. It gives you a feeling that you are in another world.

After the era of dinosaurs finish, you can start to see mammoths and gorillas.

We climbed to the top and couldn’t find humankind, but then we finally saw it! The guide explained that “These are not homo sapiens like you or me."

The Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon were carefully made including their skin texture. The guide also told us, “Mr. Okamoto said that ‘mankind has not evolved at all’ compared to the people who created various tools to live in the harsh world and painted animals in the Lascaux Cave. That is why he didn’t include homo sapiens.”

The 30 minute guided tour ends here. We went down by the stairs in the back area. The panels along the way explain the Tower of the Sun in greater detail.

The Tower of the Sun is very intense from the outside. From the inside, you can feel the explosive talent of the artist Taro Okamoto. It made me want to know why he made these types of works.

After going through the inside, let’s take a look at the museum shop with many goods motif after Taro Okamoto’s works. The museum shop is located next to the entrance underground.

64.21 million visitors from Japan and around the world attended the Osaka Expo and were charmed by the various exhibits. At Expo’70 Pavilion, you can see how it was during the time.

The theme of the Steel Pavilion at the time was “Song of Steel,” and they displayed artworks including instruments made with steel. At the “Space Theater” they implemented the latest audio technology. They played music from 1,008 speakers and held a show using laser beams.

The National Museum of Ethnology opened in 1977 and has been called Minpaku. It is one of the largest museums of ethnology in the world, conducting research on ethnology and cultural anthropology from around the world.

Inside there is the “Tankyu Hiroba,” where you can learn more about the research, exhibits and the videoteku, a system where you can view original footage of art, lifestyle , and culture of various people living around the world. The footage were taken by researchers of the museum . The museum shop sells crafts and books from around the world, and they also have a restaurant in the annex where you can enjoy ethnic food.

The Japanese Garden is located in the northern side of the park . It was created by the Japanese government during the Osaka expo incorporating the best of Japanese landscaping technology. The 26ha garden has a stream and a pond, and it is a beautiful relaxing space where the water and greenery is in harmony.

The Tower of the Sun was planned to be demolished after the Osaka Expo. While other pavilions were demolished according to schedule, it has remained in place close to 50 years. Being able to see the Tower of the Sun is close to a miracle!

Osaka Day Tour Itinerary

A visit to the Castle is an integral part of any Osaka private tour, and it’s fair to say this is the most iconic spot of great historical significance in Osaka. We’ll walk the expansive surrounding park as well, talking about history, architecture, and the overall significance of the property. The rebuilt castle interior is a post-war rebuild and is rather disappointing, so we recommend you give it a miss. Trust us on this one. We’ll spend about 75 minutes here.

Osaka’s Shintennoji is probably the oldest Buddhist temple in Japan. Over the centuries, fires and war have brought intermittent waves of destruction. But each time, a rebuilding has occurred to faithfully reconstruct the buildings and pagoda as they looked over the span of nearly fifteen centuries of history. Everything on the property has been placed there and looks that way for a reason, and as a visitor, the impact is invariably felt by all. Buddhism came to Osaka from India via China via Korea, so compared to the more mature Kyoto design, there are some noteworthy differences. We spend 45-75 minutes here, depending on if we can go in the garden.

Come check out Osaka’s tallest building (the caveat: it’s the tallest building in Japan, but not the tallest tower, which would be the Skytree in Tokyo). We won’t ascend to the top floor of this 300m building, instead only going high enough using the building’s glass elevators to afford a quick, easy, and free view from above. Next, we drop down to the underground levels for an instructive and mouth-watering walk through a high-end Japanese department store food hall. Here you can find prepared foods, both Western and Japanese sweets, and a large selection of raw meats and seafood that shoppers cook at home. We’ll plan for about 45 minutes here.

Fun for kids and adults alike awaits you in Shin-sekai’s boisterous, carnival-like atmosphere. Not visiting Shin-sekai while in Osaka would be to miss out on a truly classic part of the city. It was a very popular amusement park in the 1920s-1930s, but then hard times hit, followed by more good times, more hard times, and now the place is solidly in good times. Enjoy games, food, fashion (“fashion” as Osaka people see it, at least), and that unmistakable Osaka vibe. A visit to Shin-sekai will surely be memorable! We’ll spend about 30 minutes walking around here.

We can pick and choose from different spots in this neighborhood. The especially popular include the internationally-famous Kuromon Ichiba (a seafood open market with a ready-to-eat bent), but also funky back streets, the restaurant and kitchen supply district, and, finally, we’d be remiss to not show you around the Dotonbori area proper. We’ll spend around 1-1.5 hours here.

Quick Tips for Our Osaka Food Tour

There are a few things we’d like you to take note of before joining us.

• Please wear shoes for walking. It’s a car tour, but a fair bit of walking is an unavoidable fact of life in the big city. If you wish to temper or avoid walking as much as possible, please let us know in advance and we’ll modify the itinerary to suit your needs.
• The tour defaults to an 8:30am start time. We can move that time around a bit if you like. Please just drop us a line if you’re interested in doing so.
• The tour time is 9 hours if we start and end in Kyoto; it will be 7.5 hours if we start and end in Osaka.
