Passport Travel Tips

Safeguard your Passport. You must present your passport to the Customs and Border Protection officer upon arrival in the United States. Carry your passport—do not pack it in your checked luggage. We recommend you make a copy of your passport and put it in a separate place as a safeguard in case it is lost or stolen.

Traveling with Children. All children, including infants, must have their own passport or Trusted Traveler Program for U.S. entry. Carry documents for traveling with minor children.

• If you are escorting a minor child without the parents, have a letter from both parents indicating that you have permission to travel with the minor.
• If the child is accompanied by only one parent, the parent should have a note from the child's other parent. For example, "I acknowledge that my wife/ husband is traveling out of the country with my son/ daughter. He/She/ has my permission to do so."
• If a single parent has sole custody, a copy of the court custody document can replace a letter from the other parent.

Western Hemispheric Travel Initiative

The Western Hemispheric Travel Initiative (WHTI) allows six types of acceptable documents required for travel in the Western Hemisphere, i.e., Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central and South America.

Apply for a First-Time Passport

If you've never had a U.S. passport, are 16 or under, or aren't allowed to renew an existing passport by mail, you need to apply for a new passport in person at the Post Office.

Step 1: Gather Documents Early

Generally, you should apply for your new passport as soon as you know you’ll be traveling internationally—at least several months in advance. Passport processing times may vary, so be sure to check the latest State Department service estimates . First-time applicants, minors, and applicants who need a new passport but may not renew by mail may submit their passport application at the Post Office. Step 2: Prepare Your Application Package

Visit the U.S. Department of State website to learn how to apply for a passport and what documents you need.

• Complete your Form DS-11 Application for U.S. Passport on the State Department website.
• Print your completed application. DO NOT SIGN YOUR APPLICATION. A Postal employee must witness your signature.
• Have a passport photo taken.
• Photocopy your proof of identity and U.S. Citizenship documents.
• Post Offices accept credit cards, checks, and money orders for Post Office acceptance fees.
• State Department fees are mailed with your application. You can pay with a personal, certified, cashier's, traveler's check, or money order, payable to "U.S. Department of State."

Step 3: Schedule an Appointment

Post Offices that offer passport services have set hours, and you'll need to schedule an appointment using the online Retail Customer Appointment Scheduler or a Post Office lobby self-service kiosk.

Scheduling Online

• Go to Schedule an Appointment .
• Choose the passport service you need, along with the number of adults and minors who need appointments.
• You can search for appointment by location or date first. If you search by location first, you'll then be asked to choose a date and time; if you search by date first, you'll then need to choose a location and time.
• After you choose your appointment location and time, provide your contact information, and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
• Click Review Appointment , then confirm your appointment.

If you need to modify or cancel your appointment, click the Manage Appointments tab and enter your confirmation number and email address or phone number.

Using a Self-Service Kiosk

• Go to a Post Office location with lobby self-service kiosks. Find USPS Locations
• At the self-service kiosk, touch the screen to begin, then select "Other Services," then "Passport Scheduler."
• Choose the passport service you need, then enter the number of adults and minors who need appointments.
• Search for Post Office locations by ZIP Code™ or City/State and choose a location.
• Select an available appointment date and time, then agree to the Terms and Conditions.
• Enter your contact information and decide if you'd like to receive SMS text notifications.
• Review and confirm your information, then select “Schedule Appointment” to finalize.
• Take your printed receipt listing your confirmation number and appointment details.

Step 4: Pay Passport Acceptance & Processing Fees

First-time passport applications have two types of basic fees, the application acceptance fee and the application processing fee. Passport photos and fees for faster processing are extra. Learn how to calculate fees and what you can use to pay for them.

Application Acceptance Fees – Postal Service

Pay acceptance fees in person at the Post Office. You may pay by check or money order, payable to "Postmaster," debit card, or credit card.

Application Processing Fees – Department of State

State Department payment is sent with your application package. State Department fees are paid separately from USPS fees.

• Personal, certified, cashier's, or traveler's check, payable to "U.S. Department of State."
• Money order payable to "U.S. Department of State." You can buy a money order at the Post Office with cash, a debit card, or a traveler's check. You cannot pay with a credit card.

Application Status Updates

• Use the Online Passport Status System to check your application status if you applied by mail or in person. You may not be able to get a status update for 2 weeks after you apply or renew. During these weeks, your application and supporting documents are on their way to the Department of State. Renew a Passport by Mail

If you are eligible to renew your passport, please complete Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 (see completion instructions on the form), and mail your completed renewal application directly to the State Department for processing. To verify if your passport is eligible for renewal by mail, please visit State Department Renew By Mail .

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility to Renew by Mail

A minor's passport may not be renewed by mail; to renew a minor's passport, you need to submit a new, first-time passport application in person . An adult passport may be renewed by mail if it meets certain requirements.

You can renew your adult passport by mail if you answer "Yes" to all 5 of the following statements:

Your passport:

• Is in your possession to submit with your application.
• Is undamaged other than normal "wear and tear."
• Was issued when you were age 16 or older.
• Was issued within the last 15 years.
• Was issued in your current name or you can document your name change. (Name changes are explained on Change a Passport .)

If your passport does not meet all these requirements, do not mail your renewal application. You must prepare the same application package as a first-time passport applicant.

State Department Renew by Mail

Apply early for renewals as many countries require that passports be valid for at least 6 months after you enter their country. Learn how to properly prepare your application package and include all the necessary documents so your passport is processed on time.

• Complete your Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 on the State Department website.
• Print and sign your DS-82 form.
• Have a passport photo taken. You can schedule a passport photo-only appointment at a Post Office ™ location.
• Calculate your passport renewal fees .
• Collect your most recent passport, completed and signed application, renewal fees, and name change documents, if needed.
• Use an envelope large enough to fit the application without folding it.

Passport wait times are down: Here's what to know about getting a US passport

As you run down your pre-travel checklist, there is one item you may need that requires some planning: a passport.

Though some destinations do not require U.S. travelers to have a passport, most of the time you'll need one for international travel. Wait times are down from the levels seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, when travelers could expect to wait about four months  for routine service, but travelers still need to think ahead if they want to avoid any disruptions to their plans.

"The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically reduced the Department’s capacity to issue passports," a U.S. State Department official told USA TODAY in an email. "However, we made great strides over the last year to lower passport processing times and are currently meeting our service standards, which almost match pre-pandemic norms."

Here's what travelers need to know about getting a U.S. passport.

How long does it take to get a US passport?

Travelers can expect to wait six to  nine weeks for routine service and three to five weeks for expedited service, according to the State Department . Those processing times do not include mailing times, which may vary across the U.S. Travelers might also have to wait as long as two weeks from the day they apply for their application to be "In Process."

How much is a US passport?

That depends. Travelers 16 and older applying for a passport for the first time must pay both an application fee and an acceptance fee, according to the State Department . Application fees run $130 for a passport book, $30 for a passport card and $160 for both. The acceptance fee is $35 for each option.

Those 16 and up who are renewing their passports have to pay the same application fees but do not have to pay an acceptance fee. For children under 16, application fees run $100 for a passport book, $15 for a passport card and $115 for both, with a $35 acceptance fee for each option.

For the procrastinators out there, travelers can pay a $60 fee to expedite their passports. They can opt to pay an additional $18.32 for one- to two-day delivery, though that option is not available to applicants for passport cards alone.

The State Department offers a fee calculator on its website, which can help travelers determine how much they will pay.

Where do I go to get a passport?

For routine and expedited service, travelers can apply at an acceptance facility or renew by mail (some must apply in person , including those who have never had a U.S. passport and children under 16). Those with urgent – but non-emergency – international travel plans within 14 calendar days can call 1-877-487-2778 to make an appointment, though some restrictions apply, according to the State Department .

Travelers also can make an appointment if they "have a life-or-death emergency that requires international travel within 72 hours (3 business days)." Qualifying travelers also can  renew their passports online . "Full availability to the public for online passport renewal is targeted for later in 2023," the State Department says.

Do you need a passport for a cruise?

Not always. U.S. citizens booked on closed-loop cruises, which start and end at the same U.S. port, can enter the country with a government-issued photo ID and birth certificate instead, but the State Department encourages having a passport "in case of an emergency, such as an unexpected medical air evacuation or the ship docking at an alternate port," according to its  website . Cruise lines might also require it.

Mobile Passport Control (MPC) allows eligible travelers to submit their travel document, photo, and customs declaration information through a free, secure app on their smartphone or other mobile device. The use of MPC streamlines the traveler’s entry process into the United States by reducing passport control inspection time and overall wait time. Use of MPC does not require pre-approval. Travelers who successfully use the MPC app will no longer have to complete a paper form and may be provided a designated queue. As a result, travelers may experience shorter wait times, less congestion and efficient processing.

CBP’s MPC app is a free application that can be downloaded from the Apple App store and Google Play and is currently available for eligible travelers to use upon arrival at MPC approved sites . See FAQ question number 2 to see a complete list of current MPC Sites.

• On November 9 - MPC travelers will no longer need to scan the QR code to validate their submission with the CBP officer.

How does MPC Work?

After downloading the MPC Application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, eligible travelers will be prompted to create a profile with their passport or LPR card information. Upon arrival at eligible Preclearance locations users must select their mode of entry in the application as "Preclearance" before selecting their departing Preclearance Port of Entry. If a traveler is not using preclearance, upon landing in the United States, travelers will select "U.S. airport" as their mode of entry and then select their arrival airport or seaport and terminal. Travelers will then take a self-photo and answer a series of CBP inspection-related questions. Once the traveler submits their transaction through the app, travelers will then bring their physical passport to a CBP officer to finalize their inspection for entry into the United States.

Cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity is required to send information, but travelers may complete profile(s) without being connected to the internet.

Where can eligible travelers use MPC?

CBP uses the Mobile Passport Control (MPC) application to streamline the processing of eligible travelers entering the United States. Eligible travelers with a smartphone or tablet may voluntarily download the Mobile Passport Control (MPC)-enabled mobile application (app) from a mobile application store (e.g., Apple App Store or Google Play Store).

The MPC mobile app, is available to U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, Canadian B1/B2 citizen visitors and returning Visa Waiver Program travelers with approved ESTA. MPC is currently available at the following 51 sites, including 33 U.S. International Airports, 14 Preclearance locations, and 4 seaports of entry:

What are the benefits of using MPC?

MPC provides a more efficient in-person inspection between the CBP officer and the traveler. Since the administrative tasks are performed by the traveler prior to the passport control inspection, MPC reduces passport control inspection time and overall wait times.

When will I be able to submit my information to CBP through an MPC app?

Travelers should submit their information upon arrival at the port of entry, including preclearance locations.

Does MPC replace my passport?

No, travelers must present a valid U.S. Passport, U.S. lawful permanent resident card, Canadian passport or a Visa Waiver Program passport to a CBP officer upon arrival.  

Will I still have to go through the processing lines if I use MPC?

Yes, travelers will still be processed by a CBP officer. Travelers using MPC will be directed to a specific processing lane for a streamlined entry process.

Do travelers still have to fill out a declaration form?

No. Travelers will answer CBP inspection-related questions electronically via their smartphone or tablet. If a traveler has already filled out a CBP declaration form, it can be turned in to a CBP Officer.

Can families use MPC?

Yes, up to 12 profiles can be created for family members. All authorized MPC apps allow for a single household to submit one MPC transaction, including answers to CBP inspection-related questions.

Is using MPC secure?

Yes, the traveler’s document information and answers to CBP inspection-related questions are submitted directly to CBP via secure encryption protocols. The information you enter on the authorized applications are securely transmitted to CBP which sends a response to the apps, generating the electronic receipt you may display when entering the MPC queue. The authorized apps provide the option to store your profile on your smartphone or tablet for future travel or deleting it after your trip. Please note that the photo taken on the application will need to be updated periodically. CBP recommends travelers review the application’s privacy policy prior to download and use. Only information entered after the traveler acknowledges CBP’s notices (i.e., CBP’s mobile privacy policy, Section 311 of the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015, Disclaimer Statement and the Paperwork Reduction Act Notice) is required to be compliant with CBP’s MPC business requirements.

What happens if my flight is diverted to a different airport?

Travelers will not be able to use MPC if their flight is diverted to a U.S. airport that does not utilize MPC processing. Upon arrival at the diverted airport, travelers will follow standard processing procedures. If you were processed by a CBP officer in Preclearance, you would land as a domestic passenger and can proceed to your destination or connecting flight.

Determine if you can renew your passport

If any of the following are true, you cannot renew your U.S. passport and must instead apply for a new passport in person using Form DS-11:

• Issued before your 16th birthday
• Issued more than 15 years ago

• Issued in your previous name, and you do not have a legal document like a marriage license to prove your legal name change

If none of the above situations are true, you can renew your U.S. passport.

How to renew your passport and documents you will need

Passports can only be renewed by mail. Online renewals are currently paused. Because it can take up to three months to process your application, it is important to renew your passport before it expires.

Typically, you will need the following items to renew your passport:

• You can fill out Form DS-82 online , or
• Download Form DS-82 and fill it out by hand, or
• Find your local passport acceptance facility or regional agency and pick up a copy.
• Passport photo
• Passport fee
• Your most recent passport
• Name change documentation, if necessary

World’s 25 Friendliest Passports, U.S. Passport Makes the Cut

Owning a passport is a privilege that not all citizens around the world are lucky enough to have. But even for those with a passport, a myriad of factors determine how easy it is for citizens to enter other countries.

Global Citizen Solutions recently released its 2024 Quality of Life Index, ranking the 25 friendliest passports in the world. Do you know where the United States ranks?

Ranking Passport Friendliness

Global Citizen Solutions used and weighted the following factors to determine how friendly (and unfriendly) a passport is:

• Enhanced mobility (50%)
• Investment (25%)
• Quality of life (25%)

They used quantitative data from several respected institutions, including but not limited to The World Bank and the World Economic Forum. These are the friendliest passports in the world.

Germany has the friendliest passport in the world, according to the Global Passport Index . Germans only need to apply for a non-electronic visa in 23 countries, and thanks in great part to being in the Schengen Area, they have visa-free access to 37 countries without a limit on the number of days they can stay.

2: United States

American travelers have lots to be thankful for: The United States ranks as the second friendliest passport in the world. Although Americans have visa-free access to only four countries compared to Germany’s 37, they have visa-free access with a limited number of days in 106 countries. Americans can apply for on-arrival visas in 38 countries and must apply for a non-electronic visa in advance to visit 24 countries.

Like Germans, Swedes are able to travel to all but 23 countries without applying for a non-electronic visa in advance. They also have unlimited visa-free visiting access to 37 countries, although they can “only” access 81 countries visa-free with a limited stay.

As another member of the Schengen region, Danes have nearly the same passport privileges as Germany and Sweden. So, why is Denmark ranked beneath them? It ranks as a relatively low 26 on the investment index scale, meaning it might not be as favorable of a place for business people to want to move to or work with.

5: Netherlands

There’s a minor difference between Denmark and the Netherlands in terms of international accessibility: The Dutch have one less country where they have visa-free access with a limited number of days (80 countries instead of 81).

The Northern European country of Finland joins its Schengen peers in ranking high for passport friendliness. To top it off, Finland ranks number one in the world for quality of living, according to the Global Passport Index.

7: United Kingdom

Since Brexit officially took place in January 2020, citizens of the United Kingdom currently only have visa-free access to seven countries without a time limit. That said, they can still enter a respectable 103 countries visa-free with a set, limited number of days.

America’s northern neighbor is almost as good on the passport-friendliness scale as the U.S. However, Canadians have four fewer country options for entering visa-free with a limited stay.

Norway citizens can stay for a limited time in 78 countries without applying for a visa. They have free access without a limit to 37 countries and must apply for a visa on arrival to 31 countries.

10: Switzerland

Switzerland rounds out the top ten countries with the friendliest passports. The Swiss “only” have visa-free, unlimited access to 36 countries. They must apply for an electronic visa before visiting 26 countries.

The minuscule, upscale country of Monaco packs a decent punch for its passport friendliness. Europeans that call Monaco home have visa-free, limited-stay access to 99 countries. However, they only have visa-free limitless access to four countries.

12: Luxembourg

Luxembourg citizens must apply for a visa to visit 23 of the world’s countries before arriving in them. Like their fellow Schengen neighbors, they have visa-free access to 37 countries.

13: Singapore

Based on the Global Passport Index’s findings, Singapore has the friendliest passport in Asia. Singaporeans must apply for a non-electronic visa in advance to 22 countries. They have visa-free access to seven countries and free access with a limited number of days in 115 countries.

14: Ireland

The Irish have access to 71 countries without a visa and for a set number of days. But taking into account their visa-free, unlimited access to 39 countries, they rank well on this list. People with an Irish passport may receive on-arrival visas in 38 countries.

The land of croissants and the Eiffel Tower offers its citizens a decently friendly passport. French citizens only need to apply for a non-electronic visa in advance in 23 countries, and they have visa-free access to 37 countries.

16: Australia

Australians need to apply for a visa on arrival to 41 countries, which is something many citizens would rather do than go through the process of applying for a non-electronic visa in the 23 countries that require it. Australian passport holders can access six countries visa-free without a limit and 99 countries visa-free with a time limit.

17: New Zealand

Compared to Australia, New Zealanders have one less country (five countries) to which they have visa-free access. That drops them below Australia in the Global Passport Index’s passport-friendliness ranking, even though they can enter four more countries than Australia visa-free with a limit on the number of days they stay.

18: Liechtenstein

Nestled between Austria and Switzerland, Liechtenstein is in the Schengen area but isn’t a European Union member. Liechtensteiners have visa-free access to 37 countries and visa-free access with a limited stay to 75 countries.

19: Austria

Austrians can arrive in 30 countries and apply for a visa on the spot, while enjoying 37 countries they can access visa-free without a time stamp. Like many of the countries on this list, Austrian passport holders must apply for a non-electronic visa in advance to 23 countries.

The Japanese have visa-free access to only two countries. However, they can enter 109 countries without a visa and on a limited stay. They’re also able to apply for a visa on arrival in 39 countries.

Like citizens from other Schengen countries, Spanish passport holders have visa-free access to 37 countries. The Spanish can access 81 countries without a visa but can only stay for a limited timeframe.

22: Belgium

There’s one fewer country Belgians can visit visa-free on a limited stay compared to Spain: 80 countries instead of 81. Belgians can also apply for an on-arrival visa in 30 countries.

23: Czech Republic

Czech Republic passport holders are able to enter 78 countries on a limited stay and without a visa. As with their Schengen neighbors, they have visa-free access to 37 countries.

24: United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the only Middle Eastern country to make this top 25 list of the friendliest passports in the world. UAE citizens have access to 10 countries visa-free with no stay limit, and 103 countries with a limited stay. They can also apply for a visa in 42 countries upon arrival.

25: South Korea

South Korean passport holders are able to visit 111 countries without a visa as long as they stay for a limited number of days. They have visa-free, unlimited stays in two countries, and there are 40 countries where they can apply for a visa upon arrival.

Unfriendliest Passport

North Korea has the unfriendliest passport in the world, according to the Global Passport Index. Citizens who manage to obtain a passport have visa-free access to only two countries with an unlimited stay and seven countries with a limited stay. A whopping 125 countries require North Koreans to apply for a non-electronic visa before visiting them.

The city-state of Vatican City has the second unfriendliest passport in the world. Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Yemen come in second to fifth places for passport unfriendliness, respectively.

Therefore, if you’re embarking on an overland journey, you may need to present a U.S. passport at the Canadian border unless you have a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-compliant document for entry into Canada. However, if you’re flying directly from within the United States to Alaska and returning the same way, a passport is not required.

We’re going on a very short cruise from California to Mexico this spring. Do we need passports for our kids, even if we don’t get off the ship? — Ben, Springfield, Va.

There’s a difference between what you need and what is a good idea to have.

Let’s begin with the first: On most cruise lines and for most itineraries, a voyage that starts and ends at the same U.S. port and stays in the Western Hemisphere will not require any American citizen — child or adult — to have a passport.

These are called closed-loop cruises, and they only need proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate plus a government-issued photo ID, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection . For people under 16, a birth certificate will suffice. Popular cruise lines including Carnival , Royal Caribbean and Norwegian detail their requirements and any exceptions online.

A sailing that leaves from one U.S. port and ends at another — or starts in the United States and ends at a foreign destination — would not be classified as a closed-loop cruise. Everyone, including kids, would need a passport in that case.

There are some caveats, warns Teresa Tennant, senior vice president of the travel planning company Cruise Specialists . Some cruise companies, including Holland America Line and Princess Cruises , say that all members of a party must have a passport if minors are traveling with only one adult.

Some other cruise lines, such as the luxury Regent Seven Seas Cruises, require a passport for all sailings.

“It’s important to always check with the cruise line, because they can set their own rules that are actually above and beyond,” Tennant said.

Customs and Border Protection also urges travelers to check with their cruise company, travel agent and destination to confirm what’s required to enter foreign countries on an itinerary.

Whether or not you are required to have a passport, cruise lines and experts say it’s smart to have one before setting sail. The task isn’t quite as onerous as it used to be, now that wait times have returned to pre-pandemic norms of six to eight weeks for routine service and two to three weeks for the expedited process.

Cruise lines say they strongly recommend that passengers opt for the passport over other forms of identification.

“A passport is the hassle-free, gold standard for traveling between countries,” Royal Caribbean says on its website. “Boarding and disembarking through customs with a passport is usually faster than other types of ID documents.”

The U.S. State Department says travelers might need their passport “in the event of an unexpected medical evacuation or if the ship docks at an alternate port.” Travelers would also need their passports if they showed up late in a foreign port and the ship left without them — which has happened to some U.S. passengers recently.

“You should bring your passport even if your cruise says you won’t need it,” the State Department says on its information page for cruise ship passengers.

Colleen McDaniel, editor in chief of the news and review site Cruise Critic , said in an email that it would be much more difficult to get home without a passport if someone had to leave the ship.

“In such a case, you might have to rely on help from a U.S. embassy or consulate to return, which can take time,” she said.
