Way of the Roses July 2022

This three day Way of the Roses trip was my first such experience. I'm delighted to say that it was well worth the effort. I cannot fault Peak Tours's organisation either at HQ or on the ground. Good accommodation, decent food, great logistics support and comprehensive briefings. In short, an excellent all-round service. Many thanks to Dave at HQ and Johnny, Jim and Dan on the ground.

10 Day Lands End to John O'Groats cycle ride

This 10 day trip was superb, it was challenging as expected but the support given by Peak Tours was superb from the detail provided before the trip, to arrival and transfer, morning briefings, refreshment/meal stops, accomodation and bag movements, nothing was left to chance. Mike, Alli and Johnny (the peak tours staff on the trip) were superb, nothing was too much trouble and information/instructions were excellently delivered. Superb trip, Thanks to all at Peak Tours, I am already looking at your trips to select my next one.

Great social and riding experience

I have been on two different coast to coast tours with this company and enjoyed both immensely. The pace was about right for me (35-45 miles per day with some hill climbing). The accommodation for the overnights was first class, all organised for us. The tours attracted a very pleasant sociable mix of riders in a wide range of ages. There was a Peak Tours "guide" with us at all times and another in a support vehicle. Generous mid ride snacks and drinks were included as well as lunch. Almost everyone joined in the evening meal (price not included) at well chosen restaurants. If this pace of challenge suits you then I'd thoroughly recommend the experience.

An Ultimate Peak Design Travel Duffel Review (65L & 35L): Perfect for Nomads, Slow Travelers, and Collapsible Storage

When wandering, nomading, and traveling around the world, picking the right luggage can be tough. Backpacks are a comfortable and convenient choice world travel and adventures, perfect when you’re moving frequently and need luggage that is convenient to carry.

But for trips wherein you’re moving less, need more space, and need a more convenient packing approach – whether that is a week vacation at a single spot in Paris, or nomads on the road for months or years based in a single location for weeks at a time.  The Peak Design Travel Duffel is that more convenient approach to packing for travel.

Peak Design Travel Duffel 35L and 65L

Though I loved traveling around the world with only a carry on backpack, I’ve discovered that using a big duffel bag for nomading, and carrying a daypack that doubles as a weekend travel bag is a perfect approach for travelers that have more gear than can fit in a 45 liter backpack, aren’t moving much, and want a more convenient packing option than travel backpacks.

The Peak Design Travel Duffel has proven to be an extremely well designed and well constructed travel duffel, available in the convenient sizes of 35L and 65L, making it a carry option I highly recommend as “expansion storage” (the 35L) or a great main bag for nomads, large enough to comfortably fit their mobile lives (65L) all in an easy enough to carry package.

Read on to discover why the Peak Design Travel Duffel is a perfect setup for vacations and nomads traveling with their lives in a bag.

My Experience Traveling with the Peak Design Travel Duffel: Perfect for Digital Nomads and Long Term travelers, with lots of gear and time in one place

I’ve spent the last 5 years exploring the world in some state of travel – whether in a state of full travel backpacking hitting a country a week with only a carry on backpack, or as a nomad basing in a single city to work (and enjoy) and enjoy for periods while taking short adventures (and a smaller bag) on shorter trips.

For most backpackers, I highly recommend “one bagging” for world travel, carrying a single travel backpack of 45 liters or less that can fit on a plane , to avoid baggage fees, avoid having your checked bags lost in transit (it has happened to me), and discover how much more enjoyable life can be with less. Even if long term travelers aiming to bounce around the world and stack up countries don’t travel with a carry on, a travel backpack is more convenient to carry, for moving quickly, comfortably, and easily through airports, transiting frequently with your luggage, and being ready for the occasionally hiking and trekking adventure.

Why a Duffel Bag is a great option for travel for slow travelers, nomads, and anyone not moving weekly

Not everyone has the flexibility to travel so lightly that all of their belongings fit into a carry on backpack. Additionally, if you don’t need the convenience of how a comfortable backpack carry, then there are massive benefits to choosing a more open, yet weel designed, style of luggage.

In reality, if you are not traveling quickly, and moving accommodation more than once per week or two, and are unlikely to take all of your luggage on a trekking trip, then a good duffel bag, with the addition of a good daypack sized travel pack (like the Peak Design everyday carry sized travel backpack ) is likely a far better travel setup than a backpack.

peak tour opiniones

Adding packing cubes to a duffel bag takes a huge, convenient space, that is easier to access than top loading backpacks, and functionally feels much like a dresser with drawers that you can carry over your shoulder, or backpack style for short periods.

peak tour opiniones

For digital Nomads , a good duffel bag offers much more space, perfectly appropriate for the additional tech that digital nomads and remote workers carry. Personally, when I am in “digital nomad mode,” the laptop, extra chargers, hard drives, microphones, headphones, and small odds and ends contribute so much to my work that I can’t leave them, but nearly take up a backpack all their own – meaning more space is essential to stay productive and travel comfortably as a nomad. Because, when in my “work phases” I move less often, the benefits of extra space (in a duffel bag) outweigh the benefits of how a backpack is carried.

For long term travelers and Round the World Travelers, choosing a travel friendly duffel allows room for the extra clothes clothing for all climates and occasions (think Bali summers, Patagonian winters, and European fall) and equipment for all adventures (think about your favorite puffy jacket, a very useful sleeping bag, or your favorite retro 35mm camera) that make round the world travel slightly more comfortable and efficient.

To be honest, yes, you could “rent” a sleeping bag in Patagonia, or skip the 35mm camera, but in my experience traveling adventurously – think Laos, Sri Lanka, and Bolivia – the more adventurously you travel, the harder those high quality, niche items will be to find when you’re on the road. After 5 years on the road, I’ve decided it’s much better to take everything you’ll need to be self-reliant on the adventure than arrive and struggle to find that one thing you need.

The moral: You can take something with you and ditch it later, but you can’t find that something if its nowhere around. Going the duffel bag route gives the flexibility to make that choice.

Plus, you can always leave the duffel bag behind on your adventures.

The best adventures when traveling happen on “loops.” Think, traveling the coffee circuit in Colombia, hiking Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, or trekking to Everest Base Camp and Back. This means that you can always leave the larger bag and take a backpack traveling light for your adventures.

This is exactly what I did when I hiked to Everest Base Camp on my own, through Patagonia, and during my first trip in Bali. The first hostels I stayed at were welcoming and happily held my larger bags for me, for a few weeks until I returned.

So, you know that a good duffel bag is actually a great option for travel if you need to carry a little extra gear and won’t be moving as often, but what should you look for in a duffel bag?

More on My experience with the Peak Design Travel Duffel

I’ve taken the duffel on a handful of week long trips with my girlfriend wherein we’ve actually split the bag, using packing cubes, allowing us to travel with a single bag – and it has been great.

Our most recent trip to the cool highlands of Bali to a cabin workcation surrounded by volcanoes was the most trying trip and convinced me this is a great bag.

peak tour opiniones

The trip happened all via motorbike, and the size of this bag, plus haul points and durability made it easy to strap to my motorbike, carrying all of the gear we both needed.

peak tour opiniones

Not only did the bag handle all of the gear for two people for a week in the cold, but we traveled with the bag strapped to the back of a scooter and had the rain pour on us for an hour of the adventure. Now, sad to say, after an entire hour riding in the rain with the bag completely exposed, a few drops got in and got a couple pair of socks wet. However , I am still very impressed.

peak tour opiniones

The outer cloth absorbed absolutely no water and the water that did get in made it through a zipper corner. I tested the bag later and covering the top zipper with a trash bag would have kept everything dry.

peak tour opiniones

The functional design (haul points for strapping things down) made it easy to load. Quickly removable handles made carrying the backpack easy for the short periods – to the cabin here, and from ferries to our hotel through the islands.

peak tour opiniones

The simple organization and pockets made quick access items accessible inside and out.

This bag is well constructed and built for life. I have overstuffed it, dropped it, and strapped it down abusively and it is showing no signs of wear.

What makes the Peak Design Duffel Bags great travel duffel options

  • Backpack Mode Carry: A double shoulder carry option makes quick transport – through airports, briefly through streets, and on trains – simple and easy via removable padded top handles that double as backpack straps (for full backpack straps, consider the Peak Design Duffle Pack )
  • Comfortable shoulder strap for easy cross-body carry and shoulder carry: Having a removable padded shoulder strap is essential, because you should be able to carry the pack hands free, easily, whenever necessary
  • Removable top hand straps straps allow convenient hand carry for easy carry while wearing a backpack
  • Just big enough for your needs, but not too big: Peak Designs 35L and 65L variants are two great options that will suit the “larger luggage” and “smaller luggage” needs.
  • Water Resistant outer material throughout , with weatherproof 600D nylon canvas shell upper and completely waterproof 900D nylon bottom
  • Tough materials throughout
  • Sturdy yet lightly padded handles with woven nylon straps capable of handling heavier loads
  • Internal pockets for organization and quick access without packing cubes
  • External pockets for quick access to frequently used items

Now a duffel bag can be a great option for most travelers, however, it depends on the bag’s size and how you use it. Luckily, this duffel from Peak Design comes in two perfect sizes 35L and 65L which are respectively great for using as expandable luggage and a weekender bag (for faster paced travelers) or as primary luggage with a backpack on the side.

Let’s dissect the two options.

Peak Design Travel Duffel 35L Variant: Perfect for daily use, weekend trips, and to pair with a travel backpack

The Peak Design Travel Duffel 35l variant is the smaller option that is the perfect addition to a good travel backpack, such as the Peak Design travel backpack , or one of my other favorite carry on travel backpacks . Before I discovered the Peak Design’s smaller duffel bag I traveled with the 32L GORUCK Kit Bag quite the same way as expandable luggage I’d use with my GORUCK GR3 and leave behind on treks and shorter adventures.

The 35L is solid as “expandable luggage” that can be taken on as a carry on for your personal item (or “laptop bag”) in addition to a carry on backpack if you plan the sizes correctly.

Also, when not traveling around the world, this bag’s size, carry, and just the right amount of pockets for storing everyday use items in an organized way make it a great gym bag and perfect for weekend trips when paired with a functional daypack .

If you’re a digital nomad wandering and still want the function of a good travel backpack for long term travel and the extra storage for all of your comforts, air this 35L duffel with a good long term travel friendly backpack .

Peak Design Travel Duffel 65L Variant: A great primary bag to leave at your base for slower, travelers and nomads

If you plan to stay in one place for weeks at a time and occasionally take shorter trips out and then back to your base, the 65 liter Peak Design Duffel will be much better for you.

This bag packs the same durable build, water resistance, organization, and function of the smaller version, but in a package large enough to fit your entire nomadic life.

On my most recent trips, my girlfriend and I actually shared this bag. We simply carried our own laptops in separate daypacks, and both packed enough gear for a whole week in this bag, in an organized way using awesome Peak Design Packing Cubes . This trip was also into cold highlands of Bali, in an area called Bedugul surrounded by volcanoes, and where the weather got down to 60 to 65 degrees (~16 to 19 celsius) in a nearly off grid cabin – so we had to pack warm clothes, portable chargers, books, snacks, and nearly the kitchen sink. It all fit easily in an organized way.

The result was insanely convenient. I’ve decided that for nomading, I will definitely take the Peak Design 65L duffel as my “big bag” and bring a smaller bag for side adventures

Pros of the Peak Design Duffel vs. Other Bags

  • Intuitive design, with pockets, haul points, and handles in all of the right places
  • High quality and durable materials
  • Stylish accents
  • Perfect size for the intended use – not too big, not too small
  • Buy it for life build

Cons of the Peak Design Duffel vs. Other Bags

  • Leather-wrapped webbing handles, which can be used for backpack carry, would become uncomfortable on a long walk (consider the Peak Design Duffle Pack , with full backpack straps and padded hip belt)
  • I wish the bag had two padded shoulder straps for backpack carry
  • You will need to cover the top zipper if leaving the bag in the rain, as the bag’s design does route rainwater to the zipper’s corners

Quick Rating of the Peak Design Travel Duffel

  • Function: 5/5 – Small details and great design make this a very useful and useable bag
  • Travel Readiness: 5/5 – For long term travelers with lots of gear, the organization, size, carry options, and durability make this a great hauler for slower, longer travel
  • Durability and Quality: 5/5 – With excellent materials and construction throughout, the bag feels solid and like it will last a lifetime
  • Price and Value: 4/5 – Not cheap, but worth every penny, this bag is an investment and good value

Overall Rating: 4.75/5

Quick Verdict

For travelers that carry a little extra on their travels, whether nomads carrying lots of tech, or multi-climate adventurers with lots of gear, the Peak Design Travel Duffel is an excellent option for making your travels better and more convenient. Quality, intuitive design and function, and performance make this a bag worth its price tag and that will enhance how comfortably you travel.

  • Highly quality materials (fabric, zippers, leather) and construction (stitching) throughout make this a “buy it for life” purchase
  • The bag’s design, tones, and leather accents add up to a very stylish look

peak tour opiniones

  • Single, cross body shoulder strap – padded with quick attachment hook

  • 65L main compartment fits several packing cubes
  • 4 outer, side pockets – Waterproof fabric covered with weather shielded zippers protected from the rain + mesh separate internal organization
  • 2 zipper mesh panel pockets – For quick access storage, easy to access when bag is full

Travel Friendliness + Comfort and Carry

Carry-on Compliance: Both the 35L and 65L duffels can be carry ons, if underpacked enough

With the standard carryon limit for most airlines being 22″ x 14″ x 9″, the 35L Peak Design Travel Duffel dimensions 22″ x 14″ x 10” make it a feasible option as a carryon when full packed, but you may need to under pack lightly to get that extra inch.

However, with dimensions of 30″ x 13.4″ x 12.6″, the 65L travel duffel will need to be very underpacked to function as a carry on.

However, both duffles are soft-sided and do not have any rigged frame, thus, could be used as carry on bags for any airline if under packed enough

The aesthetic on this duffle are simultaneously minimalist and timeless. Due to the leather and metal accents, subtle earth tones, and timeless, wear resistant materials (webbing, heathered patterned woven nylon), this bag is quite muted and stylish in an understated sense.

Due to its all around minimalist design, the aesthetic is almost timeless, and could very easily pass for a bag from 40 years ago or (possibly) 40 years from now, looking good in any time.

Thanks to that minimalist, function focused design and intentionally using high quality materials, Peak Design created a great looking bag that will still be regarded as a good looking bag a long time down the road.

Materials, Craftsmanship, and Durability

Everything on this bag, from the webbing in the straps, to the metal zipper pulls, to the thick fabric and hooks, feels very sturdy to the touch – in general quality and how its all stitched together. Additionally, using the bag under heavy weight, there is zero give in the stitching.

The materials and the craftsmanship level applied in assembling the bag add up to what I feel is heavy durability and a lifetime of potential use with minimal issues.

peak tour opiniones

Specifications (Capacity, Dimensions, Technical Materials)

  • Dimensions (65L): 29.9″ x 13.4″ x 12.6″ (34cm x 76cm x 32cm)
  • Weight (65L): 1.3kg (2.9lb)
  • Dimensions (35L): 22″ x 14″ x 10” (56cm x 34.5 cm x 26cm)
  • Weight (65L): 0.9kg (2lb)
  • Top Outer Fabric: Weather resistant 600 denier nylon canvas
  • Bottom Outer Fabric: 900 denier waterproof liner

peak tour opiniones

Though at $170, this bag isn’t cheap, and you’ll find plenty of cheaper options, I still believe it is a good worthwhile value.

The materials, construction, and overall quality make it a “buy it for life” purchase that you won’t have to replace anytime in the near future, and that will be a single purchase that fills plenty of needs.

For nomads and long term travelers, this bag will serve you extensively, and you’re better off knowing it won’t fall apart mid journey. Buy cheap…buy twice.

At $170, with the quality and function you get, this bag is still a good value

If you are a nomad carrying more than would fit in a normal travel backpack and need something bigger, convenient, and still more functional than roller luggage for adventure, I highly recommend the 65L Peak Design travel Duffel .

If you are a dedicated backpacker but need a small duffel for overflow storage, I highly recommend picking up the 35L peak Design Travel Duffel .

Buggy Tours LLC offers a wide variety of tours including a visit to the summit of Pikes Peak.

Along the way up America’s Mountain you’ll be able to stop, get out and stretch, and even take in scenic views of Crystal Reservoir.

Unlike other Jeep tours in Colorado , a Buggy Tours Jeep is fully enclosed to keep you warm and cozy during the cold months. But it has the option to remove the top in the summer and warmer months.

These tours are great for adults and kids 12 & under. And Pikes Peak entrance fees are included with the tour price.

If you’re looking for more things to do in Colorado Springs, Buggy Tours also offers tours of The Broadmoor, Cheyenne Canyon, and Old Colorado City.

This full-day excursion is one of the few Colorado Springs tours that offers a glimpse into the United States Air Force Academy.

Included with your tour is roundtrip transportation, a knowledgeable local guide, as well as lunch and drinks throughout the day.

Pickup time for this tour is around 8am and starts in Denver, heading south on I-25 towards your destination.

What is the best way to see Pikes Peak?

As a local couple who lives in Colorado Springs, we think the best way to see Pikes Peak is on a Jeep tour.

You can choose to drive up the summit via the Pikes Peak Highway, but the roads are narrow and can be quite scary for anyone who lives out of state.

But when you book a Jeep tour of Pikes Peak you’ll be safe and secure knowing that an expert driver is taking you to the summit.

You won’t have to worry about driving yourself, and can simply enjoy the ride (and the epic views!).

You can also summit Pikes Peak via the COG Railway , but this is a bit more expensive even if it is totally worth the experience.

How long is a tour of Pikes Peak?

rampart-reservoir-pikes-peak-views

Getting to the top of America’s Mountain via the Pikes Peak Highway is just under 20 miles.

However, due to the high elevation and steep, winding roads this drive can take several hours round-trip.

Most tours of Pikes Peak take an average of 2-4 hours depending on the type of tour you’ve booked.

Typically the tours available are half-day or full-day experiences so you’ll want to come prepared.

What is the best time of year to visit Pikes Peak?

Although summer is a busy tourist season in Colorado, this is actually the best time of year to visit Pikes Peak.

During the winter, the Highway to the summit is sometimes closed due to snowy and inclement weather. Plus, the weather at 14,000+ feet is much colder than the weather in the valley below.

But in the summer you can expect to have the best temperatures at the top of the mountain as well as the clearest views.

This is why we recommend summer as the best time of year to visit America’s Mountain.

No matter which of these Pikes Peak tours you choose, you really can’t go wrong!

There is an activity for everyone to be able to explore the beauty of the Pikes Peaks region.

Get ready to see all kinds of wildlife like yellow-bellied marmots to maybe even a mountain lion or two.

No matter what the day holds, a drive through Pike National Forest and summiting the famous Pikes Peak Highway won’t disappoint.

You’ll drive the summit to over 14,000 above sea level while learning about the local history, and seeing the most breathtaking views in the state.

Factors to Consider When Choosing an Itinerary

clear-view-from-mera

When embarking on the exhilarating journey of Mera Peak climbing, selecting the right itinerary is paramount to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and successful adventure.

As you plan for this once-in-a-lifetime expedition, several crucial factors should be taken into account to tailor an itinerary that aligns perfectly with your capabilities, preferences, and time constraints. Here are essential considerations to keep in mind when choosing your Mera Peak itinerary:

A. Physical Fitness and Climbing Experience

Mera Peak, while not as technically demanding as some other peaks, requires a certain level of physical fitness and endurance . Climbers should be prepared for long days of trekking, ascending and descending ridges, and facing high-altitude challenges.

Prior climbing experience is advantageous but not mandatory, as our expert Sherpa guides will provide essential training and support. However, having a basic understanding of peak climbing and being in good physical shape significantly enhances your chances of summiting Mera Peak successfully.

Regular cardiovascular workouts, strength training, and endurance exercises can help build the necessary stamina and mental resilience required for this challenging endeavor.

B.Time Availability and Travel Constraints

The duration of your Mera Peak expedition can vary based on the chosen itinerary and your available time. It is essential to consider the number of days you can dedicate to this adventure, including travel to and from Nepal.

Typical itineraries for Mera Peak climbing range from 12 to 21 days, depending on factors like acclimatization days, rest periods, and weather conditions. If you have time constraints, opt for a shorter itinerary with fewer rest days, but ensure that it still allows adequate acclimatization to avoid altitude-related risks.

Conversely, if you have more time to spare, a longer itinerary will provide a more relaxed pace, offering better chances of adapting to the high altitude and achieving the summit.

C. Weather and Best Climbing Seasons

The weather and climatic conditions play a vital role in determining the success of your Mera Peak expedition. Nepal experiences distinct trekking seasons, each offering its own set of advantages and challenges.

The two primary climbing seasons for Mera Peak are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these seasons, the weather is relatively stable, with clear skies and favorable temperatures, making the climbing experience more enjoyable and the views breathtaking.

However, it is crucial to be mindful of potential crowds during peak trekking seasons. For those seeking a quieter and less crowded experience, consider the pre-monsoon or post-monsoon seasons. While the monsoon season (June to August) is less favorable for climbing due to heavy rainfall, the winter season (December to February) brings colder temperatures and potentially challenging snow conditions.

Expert Tips for a Successful Mera Peak Expedition

peak-climbing-in-nepal-for-beginner

Embarking on a Mera Peak climbing expedition is a thrilling adventure that requires meticulous planning and preparation.

To ensure a safe and successful journey to the Himalayan summit, here are some expert tips that will guide you through the challenges and help you make the most of your Mera Peak itinerary:

A. Proper Acclimatization and Altitude Adjustment

Acclimatization is the key to conquering high altitudes safely and avoiding altitude sickness. Your Mera Peak itinerary should include gradual ascents with ample rest days to allow your body to adjust to the thinning air.

Climbing higher and sleeping lower, a well-known mountaineering adage is essential to aid in acclimatization. Expertly crafted itineraries will have built-in acclimatization days at strategic points to ensure that your body adapts to the increasing altitude effectively. Listen to your body and communicate any discomfort or symptoms of altitude sickness to your guides promptly.

B. Essential Gear and Equipment Checklist

Climbing Mera Peak demands the right gear and equipment to withstand challenging conditions at higher elevations. Your itinerary should provide you with a comprehensive gear checklist, including items such as proper mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axes, harnesses, helmets, and clothing suited for extreme weather.

Ensure that you have high-quality, well-fitted gear that will keep you warm, dry, and comfortable during the climb. Don’t forget to pack essentials like a headlamp, water bottles, sleeping bags, and a first-aid kit. Double-checking your gear before the climb is crucial to avoid any last-minute mishaps.

C. Training and Preparation Before the Climb

Preparation is the key to a successful climb. Engage in regular physical training to build strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Focus on activities that simulate the challenges you’ll face during the expedition, such as hiking, stair climbing, and weight training. Additionally, practice using your climbing gear, including an ice axe and crampons, to familiarize yourself with the equipment. Acquiring basic mountaineering skills will boost your confidence and enhance your overall climbing experience.

D. Working with Experienced Sherpa Guides

Experienced Sherpa guides are invaluable companions on your Mera Peak expedition. Their vast knowledge of the region, weather conditions, and climbing techniques ensures a safe and efficient climb.

Look for a trekking agency that provides well-trained and certified Sherpa climbing guides with a proven track record of successful summits. The guidance and support of these local experts will not only increase your chances of reaching the summit but also enrich your journey with cultural insights and captivating stories of the mountain

E. Safety Measures and Emergency Protocols

Safety should always be the top priority during a mountaineering expedition. Before setting off on your Mera Peak climb, ensure that your itinerary incorporates safety measures and emergency protocols.

Familiarize yourself with the communication systems and emergency procedures established by the trekking agency. Carry personal safety gear like a satellite phone and a GPS tracker to stay connected with the support team and for potential rescue operations. Regular health check-ups during the climb are also essential to monitor your well-being.

Outstanding service! Excellent supportive guides One guide is always a back rider which gives confidence and reassurance for slower riders Fantastic and well planned route Would definitely use Peak tours again for another trip!

Mera Peak Climb – The Highest Trekking Peak In Nepal

Page Template

Asia , Nepal

Mera-Peak-2

Mera Peak is widely regarded as the one of the highest trekking peaks in Nepal . The trek is suited for experienced high-altitude trekkers but does not require technical climbing skills as slopes rarely exceed 40 degrees.

It is an Alpine Grade F (easy) except for the final 30 or 40 metres, which are Grade PD (not very hard). Its ease is what attracts many hikers to it, but don't underestimate it's difficulty.

On this page, you will find a comprehensive and impartial guide to the Mera Peak climb.

Mera-Peak-1

Mera Peak Trek

Trekking to Mera Peak (21,247 feet) will see you crossing glacier terrain.

Although the climbing is straightforward, it is physically demanding. Heavy snow can make things much more so, as do the potential exposure to crevasses. Use of an experienced guide is important.

From the summit of Mera Peak, you will be able to see five of the six highest mountains in the world : Mount Everest (29,029 feet), Kanchenjunga (28,169 feet), Lhotse (27,940 feet), Makalu (27,825 feet), and Cho Oyu (26,906 feet). This is perhaps the most stunning view from a trekking peak in Nepal. You can see as far as India!

The most appealing feature of the Mera Peak climb is the beautiful and uninhabited Hinku Valley, which is filled with a lovely forest. You will rest under mammoth magnolias and pass immaculate forests with banks of raspberries and strawberries.

The trek takes from 16 to 22 days. Outside of Kathmandu and Lukla, you will be spending most of your nights in a tent or basic Nepal tea house . Most groups camp despite there being tea houses all along the trail, a recent phenomenon. As recently as 1994, there was no more than a yak herder’s hut at Tangnag.

Please Note: The Mera Peak hike ascends to some high-altitude points. At its highest point, Mera Peak summit, you will reach an altitude of 6,476 meters (21,250 feet). There are steep sections on this trek where you will ascend very rapidly. It is important to have a clear understanding of the risks associated with high altitude trekking and how the body acclimatises to high altitude.

Where Is Mera Peak?

Mera Peak is situated on the eastern edge of the Khumbu region, which is the orange square below.

Mera Peak Map

We recommend the following map for Mera Peak - Island Peak/Mera Peak: Climbing and Trekking Map by Sandra Greulich and Sacha Wettstein.

Mera Peak Itinerary

Below is a detailed Mera Peak itinerary. Please note that there are several Mera Peak trek itineraries that can be done.

Below we have laid out the most popular version – 21 days, leaving from Kathmandu.

Kathmandu

Day 1-2: Kathmandu

You arrive in Kathmandu. Flights are generally overnight, perhaps via Dubai or another Gulf state. I recommend spending a day or two in Kathmandu, there are lots of things to do and see in Nepal .

Day 3: Kathmandu to Lukla

You fly to Tenzing-Hillary, the infamous landing strip at Lukla, taking 40 minutes, and then it is time to walk.

Lukla-Trek-Day-1 Everest Base Camp Trek

Day 4: Lukla to Pangkongma

You cross the Poyan Khola pass, with Khara Khola in the distance. You make it to Pangkongma.

Day 5: Pangkongma to Nashing Dingma

You ascend to Pangkongma La pass, granting you your first good views of Mera Peak. You then trek down into the Hinku Valley, cross a river using a wire bridge and ascend to Nashing Dingma.

Day 6: Nashing Dingma to Chalen Kharka

You climb to Chalen Kharka through the Surke La pass. Despite being 11,800 feet above sea level, there is still vegetation including rhododendrons and fir trees.

Day 7: Chalen Kharka to Chunbu Kharka

Today, you hike over rough ground. Jannu and Kanchenjunga can be seen. Jannu, 25,295 feet high, is the 32nd highest mountain in the world. Kangchenjunga is rather more impressive: the third highest mountain in the world at 28,169 feet. When you get to Chunbu Kharka, you camp.

Day 8: Chunbu Kharka

This day is for acclimatisation. If you are of an energetic disposition – many nearby walks are possible.

Day 9: Chunbu Kharka to Hinku Valley

Today you trek back to the Hinku Valley once more. You pass the site of flooding in 1998 that resulted from a dam giving way after an unusually strong earthquake.

Day 10: Hinku Valley to Tangnag

You cross a river and, passing grazing yaks, ascend to Tangnag. There are some wonderful tea houses here.

Day 11: Tangnag to Hinku Nup Glacier

You rise above the tree line and ascend Dig Kharka-wards (15,520 feet). This is near the Hinku Nup glacier .

Day 12: Hinku Nup Glacier

By day, you walk onto the glacier to be instructed in the use of crampons and axes, which will be indispensable when you tackle Mera La and Mera Peak.

mera peak quote

Day 13: Mera Peak Base Camp

Today you arrive at Mera Peak Base Camp.

Day 14: Mera Glacier

Ice school continues on the Mera glacier.

Day 15: Mera Peak

Several crevasses must be crossed to reach the high camp.

mera-peak

Day 16: Summit Mera Peak

After fixing ropes, you reach the summit of Mera Peak and then descend to Base Camp again.

Day 17: Mera Peak

This is a spare day in case of foul weather.

Day 18-20: Mera Peak to Lukla

You return to Lukla, which could conceivably take as little as three days. From Base Camp, you cross the Zanwa La pass (15,090 feet) and then drop – this is steep – to the Dudh Kosi Valley on the way. You might avail yourself of Lukla’s bars.

Day 21: Lukla to Kathmandu

You fly to Kathmandu.

Pikes Peak Tours from Denver Comparison

Tips for visiting pikes peak.

For a more enjoyable experience, here are some mistakes to avoid and general tips to keep in mind as you plan your Pikes Peak day trip from Denver!

  • ⏰ Plan Ahead: Once you know your travel dates, book your Pikes Peak tour in advance as this incredible experience often fills up quickly.
  • 🥶 Dress in Layers: Check the forecast and bring a warm coat or two!! My guide was wearing a parka and was all nice and toasty. Meanwhile, I only brought my Patagonia Nano puff jacket, and I was freezing my toes off!
  • 💧 Stay Hydrated: High elevations can lead to dehydration and altitude sickness, so be sure to drink plenty of water. I even recommend some OTC medicine if you think you’ll get a headache.
  • 😎 Bring Essentials: The restaurant food is ✨very overpriced✨. Save yourself some money by bringing your own fruit snacks, granola bars, sandwiches, etc. I also recommend packing basics like sunscreen, sunglasses, cash for tipping your guide, and your camera!
  • 🚂 Cogwheel Railway: If you decide to take the cogwheel up, reserve your ticket at least a week in advance. They almost always sell out. And for the best views, I recommend you reserve a window seat on the 3-seater side!

Pikes Peak Tours from Denver: FAQ

Pikes Peak tours range from $159 to ~$220 USD per person. That said, the private tour options can be on the pricey side if you only go with a couple of people instead of a larger group.

In my biased opinion, a Pikes Peak tour from Denver is well worth it! They’re great if you appreciate the convenience of a knowledgeable guide, desire a hassle-free experience, and want to admire the gorgeous panoramic views from the top of one of Colorado’s famous 14ers! Plus, most of the tours take you through the Garden of the Gods, which is equally incredible to see!

The best time to visit Pikes Peak is between May and October when the weather is milder. But, if you want to see the beautiful Aspen trees changing colors, I recommend going in the fall! Just remember, Pikes Peak is pretty cold no matter what time of the year you go.

Pikes Peak’s elevation stands at 14,115 feet (4,302 meters) above sea level.

Peak Design 65L Travel Duffelpack Review

The Peak Design Travel Duffelpack surprised me in becoming my one-bag travel solution for my camera gear. It's also the most comfortable backpack I've used!

Bag Reviews | Peak Design Bag Reviews | Photography Gear Reviews | By Mark Condon

A duffel bag isn’t usually a photographer’s first choice when it comes to selecting from the myriad of options available to carry camera gear.

You probably associate a duffel bag with going to the gym, or as an ‘overnight bag’ for a weekend away.

Up until recently, I used a combination of a regular backpack and a rolling camera bag when shooting destination weddings. Neither bag was quite big enough to cram everything into just one piece of carry on luggage… which was always my goal.

Enter the Peak Design Travel Duffelbag – a 65L behemoth of a gear-hauler from the guys behind the Everyday Backpack, and so many other successful carry-products.

Peak-Design-Travel-Duffelpack-Review-5

Elegant and ergonomic, this 65L duffel-backpack lets you carry all your gear and then some.

Would this duffel-bag-cum-backpack really be able to fulfill my solo-travel-bag needs here in 2024? Let’s dive in to the review!

The extremely popular Peak Design Everyday Backpack had a little too much going on for my personal tastes, whereas the recent additions to the Travel line (notably the Peak Design Travel backpack ), are more minimal in external design.

The Travel Duffelpack reminds me of an origami spring roll, with various folds in the fabric giving it a modern, technical twist.

I’ve always chosen black when it comes to bags, but this time I took a punt on the ‘sage’ version, which is closer to grey than green, and unlike any other bag colour I’ve seen – it really is unique, and I really like it.

The base of the bag (which becomes the ‘back’ when in backpack mode) is made from something called ‘Ottoman-weave Poly’, which is slightly glossy, and offsets the matt fabric of the rest of the bag. It’s also weatherproof.

As for build quality, the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is a premium product which is built to last a lifetime – in fact, as with all Peak products, it’s got a life-time warranty.

Zippers slide effortlessly, handles are sturdy, stitching is perfect, padding is comfortable – this is a bag that’s able to take all the abuse you throw at it, and still look great carried on your back or by your side.

Exterior Features

Peak Design Duffelpack

A premium duffel bag that’s been designed to be carried as a backpack.

Part duffel bag, part backpack, the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is a rather unique way to carry your camera gear, clothes, and whatever else you can stuff in its gargantuan 65L capacity.

In fact, the Travel Duffelpack is ‘only’ 45L in its normal state – the additional 20L reveals itself when you unzip the two zips on the undersides of the bag.

If the contents of your Duffelpack are soft enough, you can actually use these expansion zippers as a form of compression – simply open the zippers to expand the bag to its full 65L capacity, stuff as much gear as you can inside, then close all the zips back up.

Peak Design want you to use their ‘packing tools’, which is advisable since they keep all your gear so neat and tidy inside.

As for safely transporting your camera gear, there are 3 sizes of camera cube that can fit nicely inside the Duffelpack.

To maximise space, I prefer to use the 5L Peak Design Sling (reviewed here ) as a ‘packing cube’ of sorts – this way you have a smaller every-day-carry bag ready to deploy.

There are two large zippers that run across the sides of the Duffelpack, which open to reveal handy pockets, for iPads, passports, headphones, water bottles and the like.

There’s also a neat little ID card slot, which is almost too well concealed to be noticed by anyone who happens to come across your bag when missing.

The padded ‘flaps’ on the top of the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is where the magic happens. Behind them, lie two padded waist straps, which can be released with a quick slide, before you put the bag on your back.

Duffelpack waist straps

The padded back flaps neatly conceal hip straps.

While you may not ever need to use the hip straps, they act as additional ‘buffers’, increasing the already-decent padding on your back when carrying the Duffelpack in backpack mode.

The shoulder straps feature an adjustable sternum strap, and two hefty grab handles, which are intended to be used when carrying the bag in duffel mode.

I have to admit, I rarely used the Travel Duffelpack in duffel mode. The grab handles did prove useful once or twice when quickly grabbing the bag off the floor, but the majority of time I used it as a travel backpack.

Since its name suggests that you should carry the Duffelpack as a duffel bag (i.e. in one hand at your side), I was pleasantly surprised at how well it functioned as a backpack. I actually found it more comfortable than most other dedicated backpacks.

This could be to do with my height (6ft 4″), or the length of my upper torsos, but whatever the case, it’s an awesome backpack  – comfortable, easy to get on and off, and impressively durable.

Another highlight of the Duffelpack and what makes it so functional to use as a camera gear hauler is the extra long main zipper, which allows the entire bag to hinge open, much like a doctor’s bag.

This small design detail makes it infinitely easier to add or remove items to the bag, and makes accessing your camera gear a breeze.

The Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is actually a cross between a duffel bag, a backpack… and a traditional rolling camera bag, in the way that it can open completely to reveal the entirety of your gear. Accessing your camera gear with the bag laid out completely on the ground just makes sense.

Interior Features

Peak Design Duffelpack

The simple, cavernous interior is best used with packing cubes.

In stark contrast to the Peak Design Travel Backpack, which was a confusing melange of every storage option imaginable, the interior of the Travel Duffelpack is thankfully much simpler.

Two zippered mesh side pockets offer internal stitching to separate them into 4 separate compartments, ideal for lens filters, cables, batteries, and other smaller items.

There’s no official laptop sleeve, but due to to the cavernous dimensions of the Duffelpack, it’s not hard to find a spot for one.

I made the mistake of stashing my Macbook Pro at the front of the bag (i.e. closest to my back when wearing it as a backpack). This made sense from an accessibility point of view, but due to the metal internal zippers, the laptop lid suffered some unfortunate scratches.

zippers

Internal zippered pockets are useful but can scratch.

This could have been alleviated by ‘covering’ the zipper pulls when in the closed position using a piece of material, which is common practice with Think Tank Photo bags, among others.

I chose instead to sandwich my laptop in between some items of clothing, protecting it from those nasty zippers…

Storage Capacity

storage capacity duffelpack

One week in Bali to shoot a destination wedding – 45L worth of gear.

My travel backpack size of choice has always been 45L, which is usually in keeping with carry-on luggage regulations.

Having the additional 20 litre capacity available on the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is incredibly useful.

45L is more than enough to house my entire camera gear arsenal needed to shoot a destination wedding, alongside enough clothes to last a week in a hot country.

Then, if I decide to do some shopping, I can expand the Duffelpack by 20L, and either try and sneak it back on as carry-on luggage, or check the bag in, safe in the knowledge that it’ll come out the other end unscathed.

Ease of Use/Comfort

side straps

Straps are on the sides, top and front of the Duffelpack.

Getting gear in and out of the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is simple and enjoyable. Being able to open the smooth-sliding zippers to reveal the entirety of the contents of your bag is a revelation.

It also means that whatever camera cube you choose to house your camera gear will be completely revealed – even if stowed at the very ends of the bag.

The best part about carrying the Duffelpack as a backpack is when you actually come to take it off your back – instead of placing the strap side down (like you would a traditional backpack), the straps remain on the top of the bag.

This slight change in usage actually makes a huge difference. Not only is it much easier and faster to slide a heavy bag off your back onto the ground without ‘twisting’ it the other way up, it also makes perfect sense from a cleanliness perspective – the part of the bag that meets your back always remains clean!

The more I used the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack as a backpack, the more I appreciated this. It makes me wonder why no backpack has been made which opens in this unique way too.

When not carrying the Duffelpack as a duffel or a backpack, it’s nice to be able to quickly grab it using either one of the side handles, or those found at the top and bottom of the bag – these were especially useful when pulling the bag out of overhead luggage compartments.

Value for Money + Discount Code

Peak Design products are premium-priced for people who appreciate premium quality and design.

At around $220, the Travel Duffelpack thankfully isn’t priced out of reach for most photographers or frequent travelers.

Since it can easily replace both a backpack and a travel bag, it’s actually great value for money, and makes for a sound investment if you plan to use it like I do, transporting camera gear safely as well as clothes and other travel-related knick-knacks.

Peak Design Travel Duffelpack Review | Conclusion

travel duffelpack

The Duffelpack was my gear hauler of choice for 2024.

When testing the Duffelpack on my overseas trip to Bali this year, I never expected for it to become my main travel camera bag of choice.

I fell in love with its unique design, looks and functionality, and am pleased that it can effectively replace two of my most commonly used travel bags.

Sure, it’s not meant to be a dedicated camera bag, and the lack of dedicated internal pockets may deter some O.C.D. photographers, but for everyone else, this bag has everything you need and nothing superfluous.

It’s understated enough to pass through foreign streets unnoticed, while still remaining stylish and functional. Just be careful of those damn zippers!

Wow it’s definitely a big bag. I have a similarly sized one I bought years ago made by Oakley that also has built in backpack straps. But they seem to loosen and disconnect quite easily so I never used it in that way. It’s probably due for a replacement and my wife and I have been looking at other bags of this style. I may have to jump this one to the top of the list! Great article as usual!

Thanks Tommy! Yeah there aren’t many 65L duffels out there that spread the load so well over your back.

When is the best time to visit Moscow? | Weather, budget, events by month

When is the best time to visit Moscow

Discover when is the best time to visit Moscow. In this blog post, I will talk about weather, budget and other things to know to choose the best time when to go to Moscow for you. I cannot account the times when we went in Moscow. Here are the pros and the cons of each month taking all main criteria into account!

I will first describe the main criteria that will help you choose when to go to Moscow:

  • Climate in Moscow: temperatures and weather

Special events in Moscow

  • Budget and visa

Then I will talk about each season (go directly to this party if you already have an idea of the desired departure date):

  • Advantages and disadvantages month by month

The weather cannot be the only criterion to decide when is the best time to visit Moscow for you. Even if the temperatures drop low, Moscow in December is just magical! This is why I advise to take into account several criteria at the same time. Also remember that it takes at least a month to get the Russian visa.

When to go to Moscow: climate and weather

The seasons are well marked. The mid-season months are not necessarily the best for the weather. However, they are not necessarily to be avoided, because, as we will see later, Moscow is a city that changes all the time and the prices can be more attractive. For example, for a lot of people winter is the best time to visit Moscow.

Weather in Moscow. Moscow is inland, making the city “more protected” from changing weather. For example, the weather is much more changeable in St. Petersburg. On the other hand, the weather in Moscow is more and more scorching in summer, we can then easily reach 30 degrees (for the Russians, it’s already the heat wave).

Moscow temperatures

As soon as you think of Russia, you want to do “Brrrr”. Let’s prepare our down jackets! Indeed, the Russian climate is not the mildest on the planet. However, it all depends on the region, because the country is very large. Moscow is almost at the same latitude as Copenhagen. As Moscow is relatively far from the coast, there is a pronounced continental climate. It is hot in summer and cold in winter.

In addition, global warming is there. For several decades, annual average temperatures have always been recorded above the past. I suggest you look at the averages over the past five years to be as close as possible to reality:

Sunshine and precipitation

Sunshine. This is surprising, but there is more sunshine in Moscow than in Paris or even in Berlin: 1,731 hours in Moscow, compared to 1661 in Paris and 1626 in Berlin.

Duration of the day in winter. We had questions about the length of the day in winter. So, here are a few things. As in Europe, the shortest days are in December. In Moscow, at the end of December, the sun rises around 9 a.m. and sets around 4 p.m. Then the day gets bigger until the end of June, when the day is the longest.

Precipitation. There is more precipitation in Moscow than in Paris (705mm against 637mm).

When is the best time to visit Moscow: interesting events

Moscow is a city that moves a lot. It is even said that this city never sleeps. So there are a lot of events, forums, exhibitions, conferences. Here I’m going to talk about the main recurring events that punctuate the year and that may help you decide when to go to Moscow.

End of year celebrations in Moscow

December 31 rather than Christmas. The Russians are eagerly awaiting the holiday season. Here on December 31 is like Christmas with us. Religion, “opium of the people” according to Marx, and, above all, its official absence marked the country during the Soviet years. This then reinforced the celebration of December 31, while Orthodox Christmas is January 7.

Russian calendar. In addition, it should be known that the first week of January is a bank holiday. Many Russians therefore do not work during this period. Europe also greatly influences the habits of Muscovites. Consequently, the Christmas markets start in early December and, for some, continue until early February!

Fairytale atmosphere. If you are wondering when to go to Moscow and you love the holiday mood, then the end of December – early January, and even February, is for you! There are many things to do during this time: for example, Christmas markets, decorations, winter games, skating rinks. In 2016, Moscow opened the largest ice rink in Europe. In short, the city is doing a lot of entertainment during this period and the general atmosphere is at the top! However, everything comes at a cost. You can see more detail below in the article, month by month.

When to go to Moscow

Visit Moscow in May

May 1 and 9 are two big festivals in Russia. Both dates are known worldwide. May 9 in Russia is May 8 with us in France. The signature that marks the end of the Second World War. The shift day is explained by … the difference in time zone.

The May 9 holiday is a very important holiday for the Russians. The Soviet human losses amounted to millions. So there are many families who have been directly affected by the war. The first big parade was organized by Stalin on June 24, 1945 in Red Square in Moscow. Later each year the USSR and then Russia organized a parade on May 9. Here is the video of the first parade dating from 1945 in color, then the last – that of 2016.

A disadvantage of the beginning of May. For the planned events, Red Square will not be completely empty. There are always installations for May 9, but also rehearsals. So, to the question “when is the best time to visit Moscow”, I would not say that May is the best one. You can find out more in the article “Moscow in autumn” below.

Throughout the year, the Moscow City Hall organizes free events (festivals, small markets, concerts, etc.) in the Red Square and in the streets of the city center. For example, there are two major interesting events:

  • Festival of Lights “Around the World”: in 2019, it was from September 28 to October 4.
  • Anniversary of the city of Moscow always celebrated the first weekend of September.

When is the best time to visit Moscow: budget, price seasonality, visa

Most touristy periods. Many travelers come to Moscow from May to October. This is the period when we see the most tourists in Moscow. In addition, many are also those who come at the end of December and at the beginning of January for the New Year. The beginning of May and the first week of January are also strongly requested, in particular by the Russians (school holidays, public holidays).

Accommodation. Hotel rates therefore necessarily increase during these periods of the year. But they do not go so far as to triple. To give an idea, count at least 80 euros in the city center for a double room with breakfast. You can read more about the districts of Moscow in my article: Where to stay in Moscow?

Guides and tours. Also take into account that during these periods it will be more difficult to find a guide at the last moment. It’s best to do it 2-3 months in advance. There will be more waiting or difficulty obtaining tickets during the months of high tourist influx: late December, early January, May, June, July, August.

Visa for Russia. The cost of the visa does not change depending on the month of the year. On the other hand, the deadlines can be longer if you make the request for the high tourist season (from May to October). Allow about a month. Getting the Russian visa is not complicated, there is a procedure to follow.

In Russia, the seasons are divided as follows:

  • Fall: September, October, November.
  • Winter: December, January, February.
  • Spring: March, April, May.
  • Summer: June, July, August.

Discover Moscow in autumn: when is the best time to visit Moscow in autumn?

From the beginning of September, we feel that the temperatures begin to drop gradually, especially at night.

Moscow in September

More and more travelers are choosing the month of September to go to Moscow. Because it is not cold yet and there are fewer tourists than in summer. Prices drop slightly, but remain higher than in the lean months of the year. There is also the city’s birthday on the first weekend in September, but also the “Around the World” festival towards the end of the month.

Moscow in October

You are likely to come across the colors of autumn from the beginning of October. The accommodation prices are starting to drop gradually. There is less waiting in the places to visit. Temperatures are not very low: during the day they are generally around +6 degrees. On the other hand, the only negative point can be the cost of plane tickets, if you leave during the French school holidays.

Moscow in November

It’s one of the least calm! Temperatures drop and can approach zero during the day in mid-November. Hotel rates are low, there are few tourists, and therefore less waiting in museums. It’s easier to get tickets for the Kremlin Palace of Armor, which can be very difficult in the summer. Guides also have more availability. So why not go to Moscow in November?

Discover Moscow in winter: when is the best time to visit Moscow in winter?

Winter is a very nice time to go to Moscow, because the Christmas and New Year decorations are installed from the beginning of December and are not removed until the end of February. To learn more about the different activities in winter, read this article: What to do in Moscow in winter? If winter temperatures scare you, check out Moscow in the spring (see below).

Moscow in december

Normally, negative daytime temperatures set in, although the weather can vary significantly from year to year. In general, from mid-December the snow is durable. It is from December 20 that more and more travelers come to Moscow. December 31st is celebrated like Christmas in France. Accommodation rates are higher from mid-December. It’s also more complicated to find a guide at the last moment. Furthermore, as in Europe, the days of December are the shortest of the year. But if you want to mark New Years Day, you will have lots of memories!

Moscow in january

January is also a very festive month. The first week of January is a public holiday in Russia. Besides, it’s also a week of Russian school holidays. There are more people in the streets, museums and everywhere in the city. To find out more about this time of year (Christmas markets, itineraries, etc.), read: Christmas and New Years in Moscow . Prices remain high during this week, but drop from mid-January.

Moscow in February

It’s the second quietest month of the year. In February, winter clearly takes its ease. The temperatures are the lowest, it’s a real winter! The days are longer in February than in December. So we’re enjoying the day more, and with the snow it’s really nice, because the weather in Moscow in February is pretty sunny. Accommodation rates are at their lowest, and the decorations are still there. So, if you are looking for when to go to Moscow, if the cold does not scare you and you appreciate the snowy landscapes, why not consider the month of February?

Discover Moscow in spring: when is the best time to visit Moscow in spring?

Spring is a contrasting period between March, which is still quite cold, and May, when we really feel the arrival of summer.

Moscow in March

The ice and snow begin to melt around mid-March. Winter is coming in March, but spring is not quite there yet. It’s the third quietest month of the year. It is therefore possible to visit the city more quietly. Accommodation prices are low, guides are available. The weather in Moscow in March is milder than in February. In addition, the days are longer, so you can take many walks.

Moscow in April

It is only from mid-April that we begin to feel the beginnings of sunny days. The weather in Moscow in spring and April in particular is getting milder and colder: we can expect +7 during the day. In addition, there are not many travelers yet and we fear to enjoy the places more quietly, but we feel that the start of the tourist season is approaching. Accommodation rates are lower than in May.

Moscow in May

The early May holidays attract many travelers to Moscow. There are also many Russians who come to the capital on public holidays. It is therefore advisable to plan visits in advance to avoid queuing once there. Red Square can be closed or partially closed for rehearsals for the May 9 parade, the same day and one or two days after. More info in: Moscow in May: events, budget, what to do?

Discover Moscow in summer: when is the best time to visit Moscow in summer?

All summer months are great, if you take temperatures into account. The weather in Moscow in summer is quite pleasant. However, in recent years, there have been great heat peaks or heat waves in July (30 degrees during the day).

Moscow in June

From June, you can take long walks in the city’s parks, very numerous and much appreciated by the locals. Boat trips are more enjoyable from June. On the other hand, the prices of accommodation in Moscow are higher than in the lean months. There are also more tourists. Book your hotel, tours and activities in advance.

Moscow in july

July is the hottest month, but we’re not on +40. Moscow is a city inland and therefore there is little fresh air, if it is very hot. We can do lots of walks to discover the city. We have written several complete itineraries so as not to miss anything of Moscow in our special Moscow travel guide. It also contains tips to save time and enjoy the city off the beaten track, as there are so many tourists during this time of year.

Moscow in August

Temperatures are starting to drop gradually, but there are still so many people. In order to be sure of the choice of accommodation, I advise you to book in advance. The same goes for guided tours or entrance tickets to the Kremlin. It’s also a good time to discover the city differently by going to places that are less touristy and more frequented by locals.

When is the best time to go to Moscow? In summary!

The best time to discover Moscow depends on the criteria you want to favor: the weather, the budget, the tranquility of the visits, the special events to be experienced on site.

In summary:

  • The peak tourist season in Moscow begins in early May and ends in late September.
  • Late December and early January is the best time to experience the holiday mood, but it comes at a cost.
  • End of January, February, March, beginning of April, November are the quietest months of the year, when you can visit the city more calmly and on a reduced budget.

So, have you decided when to go to Moscow? 🙂 Do you plan to visit Moscow in spring, summer, autumn or winter?

Travel idea! As in all cases you will get a visa and there is only 4 hours by train between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, why not visit both cities? Read an example of a route here: Moscow to Saint Petersburg in one week.
