Croatia's peak season runs between July and August, with temperatures in the high 20s or 30s on the coast. But in this region you can expect plenty of sunshine from May to October, which are the best times to visit if you want to take advantage of Croatia's beautiful beaches and islands. The inland areas are also hot in the summer but can get cold in the winter with low temperatures and snowfall. Winter on the coast is milder and frequent rain can be expected.

Culture and customs

Generally, Croatians are very proud of their country and cultural heritage. While this may not be obvious in everyday life, the Slavic heritage of Croatian people becomes more evident during festivals and national holidays, where cities and villages come to life with traditional costume, folk music and feasts. While most of Croatia's population are Roman Catholic, there are also groups of people who identify as Serbian Orthodox, Muslim, Protestant and Jewish. Having endured war, hardship and frequent earthquakes, the people of Croatia have a great amount of national pride and connection to their country and family. Time for leisure and family is highly valued, particularly along the coast, where many offices end their day at 3pm.

Eating and drinking

Croatian cuisine   is heavily influenced by its surrounding countries. Separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea, cuisine along the coast tends to have more of a Mediterranean flair. Fish and seafood are integral to many coastal dishes, such as brodet (fish stew) and crni rizot (black risotto made with squid). Homemade pasta and olive oil are also dietary staples. Further inland, you’ll find heartier dishes with Austrian, Hungarian and Turkish influences such as cobanac (a goulash-like stew) and kulen (paprika-seasoned sausage).

Foodies will definitely want to visit Istria – home to award-winning olive oil, wild asparagus, rare white truffles and excellent wines – which has gained an international reputation as a foodie destination.

Croatians enjoy their beer (Karlovacko and Ozujsko are two of the most popular local brews), but they love their kava (coffee). Take a cue from the locals and spend a morning people-watching at a cafe over a kava – it’s a Saturday morning tradition in Zagreb. Rakija (brandy) is the spirit of choice, with many restaurants offering a small glass before a meal. Another favourite is Pelinkovac, a must-try bitter liqueur.

Things to try in Croatia

1. Pasticada

A slow-cooked beef dish usually served with gnocchi. This Dalmatian staple can be found in many restaurants in this region.

2. Manestra

There are many variations to Istria’s hearty take on minestrone soup, but it usually includes beans, corn and meat.

3. Paski sir

This popular hard cheese is produced exclusively from the milk of sheep on the Island of Pag. It gets its unique pungent taste from the sheep’s aromatic herb diet.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with   Bosnia and Herzegovina ,   Slovenia ,   Hungary ,   Serbia   and   Montenegro , Croatia benefits from more than 5,000 km of coastline that spans along the Adriatic Sea. In addition to the mainland, Croatia also has many islands, some inhabited, some not. Croatia's terrain is very diverse and varies from flat plains to low mountains and highlands, limestone karst cliffs, wetlands, lakes and forests of cypress. Nature reserves and wetland areas are home to large populations of migratory birds, deer, bats and bears. Visitors will also see much of the land is used for agriculture with vineyards, lavender fields, olive groves and orchards being prevalent in rural areas. Croatia's cities, while developed, have managed to maintain a high level of charm with cobblestone streets, ancient housing, historic squares and heritage buildings being preserved and still used by the current population.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the land now known as Croatia has been occupied by humans since the Stone Age. Croatia's geographical position in   Europe   allowed a great amount of influence from neighbouring regions, with tribes and people from different cultures and groups making their mark. The first Kingdom of Croatia was formed in 925 but by the 12th century Croatia had formed a union with Hungary, with a Hungarian King instated as leader of both territories. During the 15th century, Croatia lost territory to the Ottoman Empire and, in later centuries, once again came under Hungarian rule. Evidence of these many cultural influences can be seen in the architecture, cuisine and archaeological ruins of contemporary Croatia.

Recent history

Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia formed a union in 1918 to create the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, but the occupation of Axis forces during World War II lead to the creation of the Independent State of Croatia, which only lasted a couple of years during the war. By the end of the war in 1945, Croatia had become a Socialist Republic (within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, together with Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia and Montenegro), with the constitution of 1963 attempting to alleviate tensions surrounding the balance of power between Serbians and Croats. By 1980, after the death of President Tito (founder of modern Yugoslavia), economic and political difficulties resulted in a near collapse of government. What followed was years of conflict, polarity and political turmoil. The referendum of 1991 resulted in an overwhelming vote for independence, with Croatia and Slovenia declaring independence from Yugoslavia in June of the same year. Much armed conflict followed and lasted until 1995, leading to great loss of civilian life and displacement, creating large populations of refugees. However, the last two decades have been a time of peace and reconciliation for the people of Croatia and the country even joined the European Union in 2013.

Considered one of the most impressive examples of early Byzantine architecture, this church in Zadar was built way back in the 9th century. 3. Croatian National Theatre

4. Diocletian’s Palace

One of Split’s main attractions, this UNESCO World Heritage monument is considered one of the best-preserved Roman palaces in the world. 5. Cathedral of St Lovro

This cathedral located 30 minutes from Split is well known for its distinct Romanesque portal crafted by one of Croatia's most celebrated sculptors, Radovan. Mythological creatures and biblical figures all feature heavily, with saints, lions, sirens and centaurs all gracing the spectacular doorways.

6. Rector’s Palace

Also known as Dubrovnik Museum, Rector’s Palace is an impressive building in itself. With soaring arches, period furniture and a dramatic staircase, this structure steals the show from the museum exhibits it holds within.

7. Dubrovnik Synagogue

Reported to be the second oldest synagogue in Europe and the world’s oldest Sefardic synagogue still in use, Dubrovnik’s synagogue is still a place for the local Jewish community to worship on holy days. Sustaining damage from earthquakes and wars, this small but well cared for structure stills stands today due to its historical value and unique design.

8. Marco Polo Tower

While not the most elaborate or opulent building in Croatia, the Marco Polo Tower of Korcula has much historical significance. It is believed that Marco Polo was born in this medieval, walled city and this tower named in his honour rises above the town as a reminder of his legacy. This lovely castle located in northern Croatia was inhabited from the 13th century right up until the 1940s. ATMs are readily available throughout Croatia. Cities and large towns will have more ATM access than small villages or rural areas, so prepare accordingly if travelling out of urban areas.

Croatia's climate is split into two different regions - along the coast and in the mainland.

Depending on which region you're travelling to, the weather may vary slightly with temperatures higher in the mainland area due to a lack of sea breeze.

Winter temperatures are also lower in the mainland with snowfall expected and enjoyed, whereas on the coast, snowfall is quite uncommon.

Is Croatia a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQIA+ travellers in Croatia. Homosexuality has been legal in Croatia since 1977 and is tolerated but not widely accepted. Considering booking your dream tour but having trouble deciding between Intrepid  and  Peregrine ? We’ve got you covered! Read on to contrast and compare both operators, and get a better idea of which one is best suited to you.

Group size, age requirements and travel styles

Both  Intrepid  and  Peregrine  operate under Intrepid Group, but Peregrine is a more upscale operator with a focus on premium and luxurious experiences. 

Intrepid  allows a wide range of travellers on their tours, including those who are under the age of 18. They also offer Family Adventure styles of travel that have a range of minimum ages depending on the destination and level of difficulty.

While most trips are available to travellers 15-years-old and up, all travellers under the age of 18 must have an adult accompany them. 

Intrepid  does have a youth-orientated travel brand called  Geckos , with tours that are available only to 18 to 35-year-olds and are budget-friendly. Other than Geckos trips, there is no maximum age limit on most tours.

The average  Intrepid  tour has 10 travellers but allows up to 16 on overland trips, though most max out at 12 people. They do also have some trips that allow up to 24 travellers.  

Peregrine  is for travellers who aren’t restricted by a budget. The operator has no formal age restrictions but considering that it is a premium brand, most travellers are between ages 40 to 60. The group sizes are quite small, with the average group being about 10 people, and never more than 16.

The smaller group sizes allow for personal experiences and quicker travel between destinations, as well as access to destinations where larger groups may be turned away. Travel styles vary from gourmet, polar, walking and trekking and wildlife themed tours. Both operators use local guides and accommodations when possible. 

Physical requirements

Intrepid  has Cycling and Walking & Trekking tours that require you to be in good physical shape. You can expect to be working your muscles every day on one of these tours!

While Intrepid’s Overland trips don’t focus as heavily on constant physical activity, they do recommend that you are reasonably fit in order to fully participate in this trip style.  

Peregrine  has similar travel styles as most of Intrepid’s general tours but for the most part, nearly all their tours require an average level of fitness. They have a physical rating system from 1 to 5 with 5 requiring travellers to be seriously fit in order to enjoy the tour comfortably and safely.

Accommodation

The standard of accommodation will vary with  Intrepid’s  general tours, depending on the type of trip you decide to take. For example, nearly all tours will include air-conditioning and heating but if you’re travelling to a rural destination or a homestay you should adjust your expectations for the facilities.  

Something worth noting is that  Intrepid  never charges mandatory single supplements for individual travellers. You will be paired with a traveller of the same gender to share a room with, otherwise, if you would like to request a room to yourself, you may be able to at an extra cost (dependant on availability). 

Peregrine  boasts hand-picked accommodations where amenities and location are given top priorities. They look for key things like private bathrooms, air-conditioning, and, of course, convenient locations. They want to ensure you don’t spend a lot of time commuting so they’ll always find quality hotels brimming with character.  If you’re travelling alone and want a separate room, you will have to pay a single supplement. 

Transportation

Intrepid  uses a combination of private buses and public transit to get you where you need to go. Most of Intrepid’s Overland trips have vehicles that come with their own power supply so you’re able to to recharge your devices on board.  

Peregrine  stresses elegance and comfort when it comes to their transportation styles. Most transportation will be private on air-conditioned minibuses with modern safety features. They will take you on unique local transport from time to time, such as a catamaran in the Galapagos.

Destinations

Both  Intrepid  and  Peregrine  have tours to  North America ,  Asia ,  Europe ,  Oceania ,  Africa ,  South America  and  Central America  and the  Middle East . 

Intrepid  does have a slightly broader selection of tours available. 

Intrepid  is slightly more affordable for budget travellers with their average price per day costing approximately USD $242. The accommodations are rated anywhere between 2.5 to 3.5 stars, but you’ll likely find cheaper rates for tours with Intrepid’s Southeast Asia trips. 

Peregrine  is a luxury brand, and their average price per day is roughly USD $662. The reasons for the higher price are many, but in short: accommodations are a minimum of 4 stars, your transportation is always private and there are many premium inclusions.

Eating and drinking.

Eating and drinking in Antarctica is done aboard your expedition ship, with all meals provided for the duration of your journey. Tea and coffee, as well as soft drinks and juices, are ready to greet you when you come back from a shore landing and at meal times, while alcoholic beverages are also available, but for an additional price.

Breakfasts and lunches tend to be buffet style, while dinners are typically served tableside and usually feature three courses. The range of food is diverse, with professional chefs preparing a wide selection of gourmet dishes, and a vegetarian option is always included. Afternoon tea, with pastries or cookies, is also provided every day.

If you have any dietary requirements or food allergies, please let us know before the trip starts. If you have a more restrictive dietary requirement (vegan, gluten intolerance, fructose intolerance, etc) it is likely you can be catered for. Unfortunately, we are unable to cater for a kosher diet.

There may not be any stores on the Antarctic Peninsula, but that doesn't mean you can't do any shopping. The Ocean Endeavour has its very own polar boutique equipped with every little knickknack and thingamabob you might need to help commemorate your journey to the seventh continent (think all the essentials, clothing and souvenirs).

Geography and environment

Encompassed by the Antarctic convergence (an uneven line of latitude where the cold waters of the Antarctic merge with the warmer waters of the world's oceans), Antarctica is both cold and remote, located in the Southern Hemisphere. Due to its south-polar position, the Antarctic continent is covered in ice and experiences very harsh conditions unsuitable for permanent human residency.

While plenty of animals live in Antarctica (such as various species of whale, penguin, seal and bird), there are very few humans that call Antarctica home, instead using the region as a base for research. There are no cities in Antarctica but there are several research stations positioned on the continent belonging to various countries like Russia, the United States and Australia.

History and government

Antarctica was formed around 35 million years ago and remained undiscovered until around 1820 when Russian explorers spotted the mainland. However, this may have only been the first documented discovery of Antarctica, as it's believed that Pacific Islanders may have reached the white continent in 650 AD.

There were many attempts to set foot at the South Pole in the early 20th century, so much so that it was dubbed the 'Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration', with many trying and failing until a Norwegian explorer by the name of Roald Amundsen reached in 1911. Exploration didn't stop there though with a total of 17 major expeditions launched in the following years from 10 different countries, the last one being Ernest Shackleton's last ill-fated voyage in 1917.

Antarctica isn't owned by one single country, instead governed internationally through the Antarctic Treaty system signed in 1959 by 12 countries who had sent scientists to Antarctica during and around that time. These countries included Argentina, Australia, France, Japan, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Antarctica is best visited in the summer months from November to March when the weather is warmer and the sea ice has melted enough to get closer to the island shore.

What is the weather like in Antarctica?

The climate in Antarctica is the coldest one on Earth with cold summers and freezing winters. The warmest month is January with averages of around 50°F.

What do I wear in Antarctica?

You have to be prepared and thorough when packing for Antarctica due to its remote location. Make sure you bring lots of layers, gloves, sunscreen, and moisturizer among other items.

Is there internet, wi-fi, email or telephone access available on the ships?

Internet access is available on most Antarctic ships, at a cost. Alternatively, there may be a ship-based email system where you will have an email account to stay in touch with family and friends. Because of the remoteness of Antarctica, connections can be slow, so all ships charge for data used rather than time spent online. Please refer to your detailed pre-departure information for more information on Internet facilities on your ship.

Will my cell phone work in Antarctica? 

Your cell phone will not work during your Antarctica cruise as the continent is still considered extremely remote and doesn't have the right telecommunication infrastructure in place.

Can my family and friends contact me while I’m on board in the case of an emergency at home?

Yes. There is a number to call the ship and you can purchase data for the wi-fi onboard, although the connection is intermittent and not to be relied on.

Livestream of South Bend falcon nest moves to city’s YouTube channel

S OUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - The livestream for the peregrine falcon nest that sits atop the County-City Building in downtown South Bend now has a new home on the internet.

According to our reporting partners at the South Bend Tribune , the live “Falcam” stream has moved to the city of South Bend’s YouTube channel. City web administrators say this is a permanent change, as viewers have recently had trouble accessing the old site that contained the livestream.

If you go to the old web address, it will direct you to the YouTube page , where you will find the livestream by clicking on the “City of South Bend - Falcam” video that’s labeled as “LIVE.” You can also go to that livestream directly by clicking here .

The Tribune says five eggs were laid in the nest between March 21 and March 25. According to nest watchers from the website Bird Cams Around the World , two of the eggs have hatched — one on April 27, and the other on April 28.

Experts say it typically takes 28 to 32 days for eggs to incubate before they hatch. If too many days follow after that, the eggs run the risk of becoming unviable. According to The Tribune, this might be the case for one of the eggs that has apparently been pushed to the corner of the nest.

Last year, the adult falcon couple in the nest produced five eggs, with two of them hatching. In 2022, four eggs were laid but none of them hatched.
