Peter Gabriel Looks Forward, Not Back at First London Show in a Decade: Concert Review

“It’s getting increasingly difficult to tell the real from the fake these days,” Peter Gabriel said with a smile as he strolled nonchalantly onto the stage at London’s O2 Arena. “It might surprise you to learn that you’re looking at an avatar. But unlike the wonderful ABBA show just down the road, my avatar is 20 years older, 20 pounds heavier and completely bald. Meanwhile, I’m ripped and lying on a beach…”
Popular on Variety
Gabriel’s laurels remain unpacked and unrested upon.
All of which made the ex-Genesis frontman’s first proper tour in a decade a harder sell than it might have been, had he gone for easy nostalgia. The O2 was not quite sold out and Gabriel himself was in determinedly under-stated form, constantly hailing his (excellent) band and only taking center stage when he absolutely had to.
Unlike many of his controversially cranky contemporaries, he also remained affable and good-humored throughout, talking about AI in a measured, professionally curious way, even while noting the technology could yet make him and many others in the room obsolete.
Thankfully, the production did some rather heavier lifting for him, particularly on the new songs. At different points, various objects – a huge clock, a moon, a Sauron-style all-seeing eye – hovered above him; early on the group sat around a makeshift campfire; while the namechecks for the visual artists providing imagery for the ever-shifting big screens backed up the claim that this is his biggest ever live production.
Nonetheless, the staging added to the impression that this two-set, 22-song show was something to sit back and admire, rather than throw yourself into. Certainly, that’s how the crowd received it, only clambering to their feet occasionally, when both familiarity and tempo demanded it.
Most of those moments came on material from his once-ubiquitous 1986 album, “So.” If it’s difficult to imagine the 2023-vintage Peter Gabriel as an MTV sensation and genuine pop star, the irresistibly funky likes of “Big Time” and “Sledgehammer” – somewhat thrown away as the last song of the first set – at least made it sound like something that might feasibly have happened once.
Although you would not bet on it happening again any time soon. The fresh material – from long-awaited next album “i/o,” which, when it’s eventually released, will become his first album of original material in over 20 years – has been drip-fed via a new-song-every-full-moon schedule that might find favor with lycanthropes but is unlikely to catch on with the real wolves of the music industry.
The likes of “Panopticom” and “Four Kinds of Horses” were certainly tasteful, elegantly played and progressively experimental but, if that sounds like a polite way of saying they were a bit dull, well, at least “i/o” boasted a raucously rousing chorus and “Playing for Time” – a song old enough to have been debuted in unfinished form last time he toured – had the soaring, orchestral feel of an epic soundtrack.
It was the second set that really upped the ante. Latest single “Road to Joy” tapped back into “Sledgehammer”’s sparse, sprightly funk, “Red Rain” brought the musical drama and “Don’t Give Up” added some emotional heft, Ayanna Witter-Johnson standing in for Kate Bush with a supremely soulful vocal.
By the time the main set ended with “Solsbury Hill,” Gabriel was positively skipping around the stage in a bout of Dad-dancing to rival the – presumably ironic – boyband-style synchronized routine he and his bandmates had busted out earlier in the show.
By then, the crowd was also fully committed, hollering for an encore. They were rewarded with the two longest songs of the evening: a joyous stomp through “In Your Eyes,” followed by a powerful performance of 1980 anti-apartheid anthem, “Biko,” that saw the white, middle-aged crowd raise its fists in solidarity as a huge image of activist Steve Biko towered over them.

It’s a trope of the mature artist to want to strip everything back in late career – to drop the production tricks and reveal the truth. Where, then, does that leave Peter Gabriel , whose career has been built on the power of theatrical presentation, at an arena show?
- ORDER NOW: Bruce Springsteen is on the cover of the latest UNCUT
As mushrooms grow and strawberries rot on screens behind him, and works by favourite artists like Ai Wei Wei complement his performance, you’d maybe think that Gabriel was having none of it and sticking firmly to his position.
It turns out, though, from his initial Pythonesque appearance (strolling on in a flat cap), to his humorous digressions (“I grew up on a dairy farm – only the bull was worried about AI… artificial insemination”) it seems these days Gabriel’s mission is to enjoy the tricks of the performance trade, but also dismantle the power hierarchy and convention of a rock show.
The tone is conversational and intimate. There’s no big entrance. There’s a lot of talking and thanking the band, as he discourses on what concerns him: fake news, AI, the future, and the fate of the individual.
Which all has a charming father-in-law-reads-that-book-about-mushrooms quality, and is certainly a change from hanging upside down in a harness or dressing up as he has in the past but possibly preaching to the choir. For all his diverse interests, you couldn’t fail to get the idea from the songs (“ Love Can Heal ”, “ Live And Let Live ”) and the feeling in his voice – the man can still very much hit those soulful high notes, that Gabriel is a pretty right-thinking guy. In case you for some reason thought he might be content with a hits set, there’s a new song “ Olive Tree ”, from a forthcoming project. VR-themed? Need you even ask?
As the evening progresses Gabriel untethers from the conceptual, Brian Cox feel of the first set (highlights: “ Growing Up ” “ i/o ”, “ Sledgehammer ” which he had to fit in somewhere), to a second half more coherently-programmed for mood. Ayanna Witter-Johnson is our ersatz Kate Bush on “ Don’t Give Up ”, while the sumptuous “ Red Rain ” and “ Solsbury Hill ” end a second set which illustrates how well his funky and textural world pop has travelled.
Ultimately it’s testament to Gabriel’s charisma that as much as he tampers with the dynamics of a big rock concert (a campfire? An actual interval?), his performance – see his “ Big Time ” formation stepping with bassist Tony Levin and guitarist David Rhodes – can effortlessly bring it back. The encores are epic and expansive versions of “ In Your Eyes ” and “ Biko ”, which endorse again the eccentric and utterly unique figure which Gabriel cuts. This is someone who became a superstar using all the tricks of the 1980s, but who did it honourably and in his own way then. Clearly, he sees no reason to change that now.

Peter Gabriel, O2 Arena review: A bog-standard greatest hits show this was not
There is something to be said for a refusal to play into easy nostalgia, and gabriel has often marched to the beat of his own drum.
It’s fair to say that Peter Gabriel ’s first London show in nine years wasn’t one for the casual punter. Of the 22 songs performed by the former Genesis frontman, half were brand new, presumed to be from his forthcoming album i/o , his first record of new material in 21 years that currently has no release date. Six have been drip-fed out over the past few months – Gabriel decided to put out two versions of each track, a dark and light mix, on each full moon this year – but five haven’t been heard at all. A greatest hits set this was not.
Such obstinacy would normally be the death knell of any gig: people paying top dollar for big shows, especially from an artist of Gabriel’s vintage, tend, somewhat justifiably, to expect to hear songs that they know and love. But then there is something to be said for a refusal to play into easy nostalgia, and Gabriel has often marched to the beat of his own drum: on his last tour, he opened with a song he hadn’t even finished writing.
After 32 years, Take That still bring the house down
Even the start of the show was somewhat incongruous. After shuffling on in near darkness and making a joke that he is an Abba-like avatar (“except instead of younger I’m 20 years older, 20lb heavier and bald”) Gabriel played opener, 1992’s gentle “Washing of the Water”, on keyboard with just long-time stalwart Tony Levin on bass; the rest of the eight-strong band joined for the worldly rhythms of “Growing Up”, and played under a huge illuminated moon sat around a faux campfire, complete with embers smoking from firewood. It was the most lowkey start to an arena show imaginable.
The next hour was full of Gabriel’s new material, which, expressed by musicians of the highest technical proficiency – and augmented by a complex visual spectacle arranged by Canadian theatre director Robert Lepage displaying the work of specially commissioned artists including Ai Wei Wei – was an artfully constructed and melodically rich mix of mood, textures and colours. You could trace folk, rock, 80’s-style funk and electronica in the arrangements, which were fairly straightforward and light by Gabriel’s standards. Some of it was superb: “Playing for Time” was a beautiful piano ballad; “Four Kinds of Horses” a luxuriously layered climate change anthem; “i/o” (meaning output/input) a rather sweet take on interconnectivity with nature.
But the lack of recognition means when the show’s first half ended with an exuberant take on signature tune “Sledgehammer” from 1986’s mega-selling So – Gabriel in his element pulling out spritely dad dancing moves for a man of 73 – it was like being transported to a different gig. The relief in the arena was palpable.
The second half struck a better balance. After crashing into life with the dense prog of 2002’s “Darkness” – Gabriel singing behind a hi-tech multi-part lengthy see-through screen in silhouette – newer songs like synthy “Live and Let Live” stood up next to hits like the layered rock of “Red Rain” and the infectious “Big Time”, which still sounds like the epitome of mid-80’s chart pomp.
There was no Kate Bush, but accomplished celloist Ayanna Witter-Johnson duetted admirably with Gabriel on “Don’t Give Up”; the closing “Solsbury Hill”, his debut solo single from 1977, remains a golden song, retaining its purity after all these years. He encored twice, first with a unifying, elongated “”In Your Eyes”, and then with percussion-heavy early solo classic “Biko”, which had the crowd chanting and waving arms.
It was a blissful end to a connoisseur’s show.

About Peter Gabriel
Peter Gabriel first came to international prominence with the success of Genesis, a band that he co-founded while still at school. Since leaving Genesis in 1975, his recording career has included eleven studio albums, film soundtracks for Alan Parker’s ‘Birdy’, Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ and Philip Noyce’s ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ as well as numerous live albums. His wider musical career has included multiple Grammy Awards, the world-renowned Real World Studios, the formation of the Real World Records label, and in 1980 the creation of WOMAD, the festival that has launched the careers of many artists from around the world and has just celebrated its 40 th anniversary.
Peter Gabriel co-founded the human rights organization WITNESS (Witness.org) in 1992, the organization that pioneers the use of cameras and technology in human rights campaigning, and in 2007, alongside Sir Richard Branson, he founded The Elders (theelders.org) which was launched by Nelson Mandela. In 2006, Peter Gabriel was awarded the prestigious Man of Peace title by The Nobel Peace Laureates and in 2008 was also included in the Time 100 list. He has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice. He remains engaged in a wide variety of tech-based businesses throughout a variety of creative industries.

Peter Gabriel announces first UK & Ireland tour in nine years
Taking place in June 2023
Peter Gabriel has announced a five-date UK & Ireland arena tour for summer 2023.
The culmination of a 22-date European trek, the UK & Ireland leg of i/o - The Tour opens at Birmingham Utilita Arena on Saturday 17th June and visits London The O2, Glasgow OVO Hydro, Manchester AO Arena and Dublin 3 Arena.
It’s the first time Genesis legend Peter Gabriel has toured the UK since the Back To Front Tour back in autumn 2014.

i/o - The Tour will see Gabriel playing new material from his forthcoming album i/o, as well as delving into his peerless catalogue of music, with hits, fan favourites and the unexpected. For the shows, Gabriel will be joined by regular band-mates Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Katché.
Peter Gabriel said of the tour: “It’s been a while and I am now surrounded by a whole lot of new songs and am excited to be taking them out on the road for a spin. Look forward to seeing you out there.”

18 album covers that look similar to other album covers, including genesis:, scott weiland – ‘12 bar blues’ (1998).
The late-great Stone Temple Pilots singer's debut solo album features a blue-tinged image of Scott on the cover.
John Coltrane – ‘Blue Train’ (1958)
From the image to the font, Scott Weiland's '12 Bar Blues' is a homage to jazz legend John Coltrane's landmark 'Blue Train' album from 40 years earlier.
Anthrax – ‘Kings Among Scotland’ (2018)
The thrash metallers' 2018 live album 'Kings Among Scotland', which captures their 2017 show at Glasgow's Barrowland Ballroom, came with this visually striking animated sleeve.
Kiss - ‘Rock and Roll Over’ (1976)
The Anthrax sleeve is an overt parody of the aesthetically vibrant animated cover to Kiss's fifth studio album 'Rock and Roll Over'.
The Clash - ‘London Calling’ (1979)
The seminal cover to The Clash's 'London Calling' features a black-and-white image of bassist Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Precision Bass at the Palladium in New York City. It was created by designer Ray Lowry.
Elvis Presley - ‘Elvis Presley’ (1956)
With its pink and green lettering and black-and-white photo, 'London Calling' pays direct homage to Elvis Presley's self-titled debut album from 23 years earlier.
Iron Maiden - ‘Powerslave’ (1984)
The heavy metal legends' long-term artist Derek Riggs designed the Ancient Egyptian themed cover to their fifth album 'Powerslave.' Truly one of the best sleeves in metal history.
Earth, Wind & Fire - ‘All n’ All’ (1977)
Visually, Iron Maiden's 'Powerslave' is extremely similar to Earth, Wind & Fire's album 'All n' All' from seven years earlier. Maiden artist Derek Riggs has dismissed the idea he copied the funk band, saying: "Somebody somewhere said it was inspired by an Earth Wind & Fire cover, but that's just crap. Because of the song Bruce wrote it had to be Egyptian, so I went back to the tomb of Rameses 2 and copied the idea from that (just like Earth, Wind & Fire did) but mine is better. It's also got a hieroglyph Micky mouse in the bottom left corner. Ha! Earth Wind and Fire don't have a Mickey Mouse. Obviously inferior." Well said, Derek!
Mötley Crüe – ‘Too Fast for Love’ (1981)
The artwork to Mötley Crüe's debut album features a close-up of a rock star's crotch area.
The Rolling Stones - ‘Sticky Fingers’ (1971)
Mötley Crüe's 'Too Fast for Love' is, of course, a tribute to The Rolling Stones' infamous 'Sticky Fingers artwork from a decade earlier. Created by legendary artist Andy Warhol, the visible outline of the model's manhood caused quite a stir upon the album's release 49 years ago.
Deep Purple – ‘Deep Purple’ (1969)
The dark and macabre cover artwork to 1969's self-titled 'Deep Purple' is adorned with the right-hand painting from Hieronymus Bosch's 15th Century triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights. It depicts the horrors of hell.
Pearls Before Swine - ‘One Nation Underground’ (1967)
Deep Purple weren't the first band to use The Garden of Earthly Delights on their album sleeve – Floridian psychedelic folk act Pearls Before Swine used a slightly different part of the painting for their 1967 debut album 'One Nation Underground'.
Manowar - ‘Fighting the World’ (1987)
Manowar enlisted fantasy artist Ken Kelly to create the 'Fighting the World' sleeve.
Kiss - ‘Destroyer’ (1976)
The 'Destroyer' cover art was also designed by Ken Kelly and features Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss standing atop some rubble with destroyed buildings in the background.
Led Zeppelin – ‘Physical Graffiti’ (1975)
Led Zeppelin's iconic 'Physical Graffiti' depicts two side-by-side tenement buildings located at 96 and 98 St. Mark's Place in New York's East Village. JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, astronaut Neil Armstrong, Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, King Kong, the Virgin Mary, Judy Garland and Led Zeppelin themselves are among the faces peering out of the windows.
Jose Feliciano - ‘Compartments’ (1973)
The concept for Led Zeppelin's 'Physical Grafitti' cover was allegedly inspired by the sleeve on Puerto Rican guitarist Jose Feliciano's 1973 album 'Compartments', which features different faces peering out of windows.
Genesis – ‘Land of Confusion’ (1986)
Just like the hilarious video, Genesis' 'Land of Confusion' single artwork features Spitting Image incarnations of Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford.
The Beatles - ‘With The Beatles’ (1963)
Genesis' 'Land of Confusion' is a hilarious pastiche of the artwork on The Beatles' second studio album 'With The Beatles.'
The Who – ‘The Who Sings My Generation’ (1966)
The US edition of The Who's debut album 'My Generation' not only featured a different title and track list but also alternative artwork of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon stood in front of the Big Ben clock tower.
The Rockin’ Berries – ‘In Town’ (1964)
Two years before The Who's 'The Who Sings My Generation', Birmingham beat group The Rockin' Berries released their debut album 'In Town', which also featured an image of the band standing in front of the Big Ben clock tower against a blue sky. A minor hit, the album dented the UK album chart at no.15.
Tom Waits ‘The Heart of Saturday Night’ (1974)
Gravelly voiced singer Tom Waits' second album features an illustration of a tired Waits being observed by a blonde haired woman as he exits a neon-lit cocktail lounge late at night.
Frank Sinatra ‘In the Wee Small Hours’ (1955)
Tom Waits' 'The Heart of Saturday Night' is based on 'In the Wee Small Hours' by Frank Sinatra, which depicts the singer on an eerie and deserted street awash in blue-tinged streetlights. Tom Waits listed 'In the Wee Small Hours' as his favourite album of all time in a 2005 interview with The Guardian.
The Mothers of Invention - ‘We're Only In It for the Money’ (1968)
Frank Zappa's art director Cal Schenkel and Jerry Schatzberg photographed a collage for the 'We're Only In It for the Money' album cover that directly parodied The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', which was released a year earlier. Zappa's good mate Jimi Hendrix appears on the sleeve on the right hand side where the wax sculpture of Sonny Liston appears on The Beatles' sleeve. Much to Zappa's dismay, Capitol Records issued the album with an alternate photograph and the Beatles parody was demoted to the inside cover.
The Beatles – ‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’ (1967)
Here's the iconic sleeve to The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' designed by pop artists Peter Blake and Jann Haworth.
Lordi - ‘Beast Loose In Paradise’ (2008)
The monstrous Finnish metallers, who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006 with their song 'Hard Rock Hallelujah', released a single called 'Beast Loose In Paraside' in 2008 for the soundtrack to their film 'Dark Floors'. The artwork features a very blue photograph of Lordi.
Kiss - ‘Creatures of the Night’ (1982)
Lordi's 'Beast Loose In Paradise' single cover pays tribute to the sleeve to Kiss' 10th studio album 'Creatures of the Night'.
12. Uriah Heep – ‘Live at Shepperton '74’ (1986)
Released 12 years after it was recorded at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, 'Live at Shepperton '74' features a bootleg LP style brown paper sleeve with a stamp of the Uriah Heep band name and album title.
The Who - ‘Live at Leeds’ (1970)
Uriah Heep's 'Live at Shepperton '74' is clearly highly reminiscent of The Who's seminal 1970 live album 'Live at Leeds'. It could be argued that 'Live at Leeds' is in fact a homage to The Rolling Stones' bootleg LP 'Live'r Than You'll Ever Be' from 1969.
David Bowie ‘The Next Day’ (2013)
The cover to David Bowie's 24th studio album 'The Next Day' is a tweaked version of Bowie's 1977 album "Heroes" and features a white square obscuring the music legend's face. It was designed by Jonathan Barnbrook, who also created the 'Heathen' and 'Black Star' sleeves, and is meant to signify wiping out the past.
David Bowie – “Heroes” (1977)
Here's the "Heroes" cover from 1977 featuring an iconic image of David Bowie taken by photographer Masayoshi Sukita. The pose was inspired by German artist Erich Heckel's 1917 painting Roquairol.
Slade – ‘Till Deaf Do Us Part’ (1981)
Slade's tenth studio album featured a lovely image of a nail being hammered into an ear canal. Delightful stuff.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band – ‘The Roaring Silence’ (1976)
Slade's 'Till Deaf Do Us Part' is highly reminiscent of Manfred Mann's Earth Band's 'The Roaring Silence' from 15 years earlier, which features a huge outer ear with a mouth inside it. It was created by artist Derek Goldsmith.
Thee Oh Sees / Paul Cary – ‘Thee Oh Sees / Paul Cary’ (2010)
San Francisco alternative rock band Thee Oh Sees released a self-titled split 7" single with musician Paul Cary in 2010.
Rush – ‘Rush’ (1974)
Thee Oh Sees' single is of course a carbon copy of Rush's eponymous debut album from 1974.
David Byrne – ‘Grown Backwards’ (2004)
The Talking Heads frontman's sixth solo album features a photograph of Byrne gazing into the yonder.
Phil Collins – ‘… But Seriously’ (1989)
Genesis drummer/vocalist Phil Collins also gazed pensively into the yonder on his fourth solo album.
