Guide to Visiting Pichavaram Mangrove Forest in Tamil Nadu

One of the World's Largest Mangrove Jungles

pichavaram mangrove forest tourism

You can be forgiven if you didn't know about Pichavaram mangrove forest, despite it being one of the world's largest mangrove jungles (along with the Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal and Bhitarkanika in Odisha ). After all, it's not on the tourist trail. However, this remarkable and fascinating place is definitely worth visiting.

Significance of Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

The mangrove forest at Pichavaram is spread over 1,100 hectares and joins the Bay of Bengal, where it's separated by a lengthy sand bank. Apparently, the forest has more than 50 islands of various sizes, and 4,400 big and small canals. Astonishing! The small canals are sun-flecked tunnels of roots and branches, some hanging so low that there's hardly any room to pass through. Except for the swish of paddles, sound of birds and roar of the sea in the distance, all is silent and still.

Students and scientists from across India come to study the mangrove forest and its incredible biodiversity. Approximately 200 species of birds have been recorded, along with many varieties of seaweed, fish, prawns, crabs, oysters, turtles, and otters. There are around 20 different varieties of trees in the mangrove forest as well.

The trees grow in water that's three to 10 feet deep in different places. The conditions are quite hostile, as the sea's tides bring salt water in and out twice a day, changing the salinity. Hence, the trees have unique root systems, with membranes that only allow fresh water to enter. They also have breathing roots that grow up from the water, with pores that can take in oxygen.

Unfortunately, the mangrove forest was damaged by the devastating 2004 cyclone that hit Tamil Nadu. However, if it wasn't for the forest acting as a buffer for the water, the destruction inland would've been severe. The water from the tsunami has affected its growth, requiring protective measures to be put into place. Previously, villagers cut the tree roots to use for firewood. This has now been banned.

The unique setting of the mangrove jungle has featured in a number of south Indian movies including Idayakanni (1975), Sooryan (2007), Dasavatharam (2008), and Thupparivalan (2017).

It also used to be a hub for smugglers, due to its confusing maze of waterways.

History and Mythology

Pichavarm mangrove forest was originally known as Thillai Vana and has a significant role in the area's heritage. It's said that Lord Shiva entered the forest, where a group of rishis (sages) lived and practiced magic, in the form of a handsome but simple merchant. He was accompanied by Lord Vishnu in his alluring female avatar, Mohini. The rishis were enraged when their women became enchanted with Lord Shiva. They invoked snakes, tigers and demons to destroy him. Of course, it didn't work. In the end, Lord Shiva disclosed who he really was and performed the Ananda Tandava (the blissful cosmic dance) in his form of Nataraja. This made the rishis realize that god could not be controlled by magic rituals, as they had believed.

How to Get There

Pichavaram is located about 30 minutes drive from the temple town of Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu. It's a picturesque route past paddy fields, villages with colorfully painted houses, traditional style huts with thatched roofs, and women selling fish by the roadside. A taxi will cost approximately 800 rupees for a return trip and is the most convenient way of getting there. Alternatively, local buses run hourly between Chidambaram and Pichavaram, with tickets costing about 10 rupees.

Chidambaram can easily be reached by train in under four hours from Chennai. See train options here . The nearest airports are in Tiruchirapalli (three hours southeast of Chidambaram) and Pondicherry (two hours north of Chidambaram). Pichavaram is a convenient day trip from Pondicherry.

How to See It

The mangrove forest can be explored by row boat or motor boat. Motor boats are ideal for sizable groups, and you'll be able to go all the way to the beach through the mangroves in a couple of hours. However, these boats are too big to fit inside the narrow canals. If you're interested in venturing deep inside the jungle, you'll need to take a row boat. It's well worth it.

Boats operate from around 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. It gets very hot in the middle of the day though, so it's recommended that you go early in the morning or late afternoon. Boating is not strictly regulated. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation and Tamil Nadu Forest Department conduct official boating activities but local non-government boatmen are also available. Various packages are offered with costs based on boat type, number of people, distance, and attractions covered. You can expect to pay about 1,700 rupees per hour for a motor boat, and 300 rupees upwards for a row boat to go inside the mangrove jungle.

Do be aware that the boat operators all ask for more money for trips inside the small canals and to spots where movies were shot. You'll need to negotiate with them directly. How much you pay will depend on how much you want to see.

It's a good idea to carry food with you as there aren't many places to eat in the area. Bring a cap and sun protection too, if you'll be out during the day.

November to February is the best time, particularly for bird watching. For a peaceful experience, avoid weekends and public holidays as it does get busy then. Also avoid visiting during the scorching summer months, in April and May, as the high humidity is extremely uncomfortable.

Where to Stay

Options for accommodations in the area are limited. Pichavaram Adventure Resort, in Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation's Arignar Anna Tourist Complex, is your best bet. There's a dormitory, as well as rooms and cottages. However, since there's no competition in the area, amenities are poor. There are better budget places to stay in Chidambaram. Try the Vandayar Hotel or Nataraja Residency.

What Else to Do Nearby

Chidambaram is renowned for its Shiva temple , dedicated to Lord Shiva as Nataraja. It's one of the top temples in South India and is distinguished by its Vedic rituals, set by the sage Patanjali. This is unlike other Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu, whose agamic rituals are based on Sanskrit scriptures. The temple priests, known as Podu Dikshitars, were said to be brought from the abode of Lord Shiva by Patanjali himself! A highlight is the daily yagna (fire sacrifice) that's performed as part of the morning puja (worship) in the temple's Kanaka Sabha (Golden Hall).

Rowboats are fully exposed to the heat of the sun, yet worth an Instagram picture amongst the mangroves. Another great advantage of rowboats is that they can go into the interior passageways of the mangroves, and turnings are easy, unlike motorboats. If it is too hot during the day, opt for a motorboat as it comes with roofing for shade.

Mr. Kathiravan is a very genuine and kind person. We can vouch for a safe experience with him. You can contact him while you are at the place. He can also arrange for lunch and take you to the harbor nearby, provided you reach in the morning. When you take a private, you can have fun and relish it at your own pace. We gave Rs.3000/- for five people for a motorboat ride.

The beach and the entire stretch of forest land are clean and well-maintained. Make sure to carry your waste back to the mainland and not litter.

Note: We would recommend you either take a private tour with Mr. Kathiravan (the best) or opt for a rowboat and provide some extra wages to the oarsman to take you farther.

Hundreds of red crabs can be seen walking in the shallows adjacent to the roots. Touch them and they will hide inside the arch.Another wonder here is that the roots of some plants emerge from the water and breathe air like humans. Mangrove Magic at Pichavaram

Sadhana sudhakaran, 16 february 2024, 07:38 am ist.

pichavaram mangrove forest tourism

Not many are aware about this place – Pichavaram - a small village located near Chidambaram in Cudallore district in Tamil Nadu. It is also not widely recognised by tourists as it remains relatively hidden. But you will be surprised to know that the world’s second largest mangrove jungle is located here in this remote village (first is Sundarbans in Bengal), which can be reached 30 minutes drive from the temple town of Chidambaram.

Pichavaram is not a developed place and the road from Chidambaram to reach this place is through the paddy fields, traditional huts with thatched roofs and women selling fish, prawns, dry fish by roadsides. Private transport services do fulfil the needs of those who want to explore the green jewel hidden amidst the backwaters. There are no frequent bus services from Chidambaram to Pichavaram except for local buses which run a hourly service to the place and returns back. Private vehicles are the best option available.

Would you be surprised to hear that many South Indian movies have been filmed in this picturesque locale with the unique setting of the expansive mangrove trees stretching across acres of land. This location served as the backdrop for the climax scene of the film Manthrikam starring Mohanlal. A first song sequence from Kamalahassan movie Dasavathaaram was shot here and the final scene of Vishal’s `Thupparivalan’ was also filmed in these serene backwaters.

Once you reach the place you will be taken aback as the beauty of the place is not seen from outside. Only the mundane ticket counters welcome you at the entrance. You will have to purchase tickets and take the boat rides through the mangrove forest to ideally explore the hidden beauty. Tickets are available for row boat and motorised boats. Various packages are available with costs based on boat types, distance, number of people, etc. The boat journey usually takes an hour to explore the wetlands. Paddle boats just take you to a safe distance and return within an hour and the man rowing it generally becomes tired soon.

The mangrove forests, located between two prominent estuaries, the Vellar estuary and Coleroon estuary, boasts of an extended waterscape spanning over thousands of hectares. This unique ecosystem also provides a habitat for a diverse array of flora and fauna.

As you start exploring the beauty of the mangrove forest, all you can see is the vast waterscape with mangroves all around. Whether you look to your left or your right, a verdant carpet of green lines the waterways. It is impossible to tell where the waters end as the boat navigates this watery maze. The boat ride is enthralling with mangroves forming a continuous, lush corridor that seems to stretch endlessly in every direction. One thing that amuses you is when the boatman mentions that the mangroves are rooted in just 5 to 10 feet of water but warns not to disembark from the boat because the area is filled with swamp.

Pichavaram mangrove forest, which has 50 islands of various sizes, was also designated as the Wetland of International Importance in 2022 and supports migratory birds, reptiles and a unique diversity of flora and fauna.

pichavaram mangrove forest tourism

The boatman never takes you deep into the forests but only offers you to see the serene journey along the banks, where mangroves are gracefully lined. It is a straight drive, a few kilometres back and forth, and it leaves you in awe wondering how the thickly grown roots stand binding within a few feet of water. The boatman explains that the area is marshy and sandy and during heavy rains, the water levels can rise significantly. During bad weather conditions or during heavy rains, the boat rides are cancelled for safety reasons, as waters rise abundantly. Boating is banned due to risk factors. However, on sunny days, when the weather is calm, you can ride through. The only sounds you will hear are the gentle ripples beneath the boat, the calls of birds, and the serene stillness of nature.

With a little persuasion and the promise of a few extra bucks, the boatman will gladly escort you to the heart of the mangroves. The lazy boat ride becomes an enthralling experience as you enter the shimmering water canals. There you'll find yourself surrounded by a network of roots and branches, a world where only the embrace of the mangroves awaits. As you venture deeper, you'll be enchanted by the sight of a narrow passage enveloped by towering mangroves; some firmly rooted while others lean precariously, as if poised to make a fall over you.

Tall mangrove trees with interlocking roots and branches cast a dappled shadow on the surface of water. The thick roots and branches hanging so low almost grace you. You can see the dense canopy of leaves amidst the sun kissed light.

pichavaram mangrove forest tourism

Sometimes, the boat cruises slowly in silence where there is hardly any sunlight, the pathway looks eerie as if it is closing in on you. You wonder if the boat can actually navigate the narrow turns. The boatman gives us useful information about the place, the fauna and talks about his life. “Pichavaram is the lifeline of our village,” he says. “One should never be scared of entering the waters. Fear is something that should not accompany any driver. We should be fearless and only then we can overcome the challenges,” he says.

The boats criss crosses each and every turn, encountering floating leaves on the water’s surface. Despite the occasional bumps, we remain static, as the boatman offers reassuring words at every twists and turn. Sometimes, the boats inadvertently collide with the tightly interwoven root system, jolting us. It's a thrilling journey through the tangled mangroves, a world where these resilient trees exists amidst the external threats.

After going inside admiring the beauty and how the trees survive the natural disasters, the boat exits the secret world untouched by time, leaving us in a world of nature’s maze atleast for sometime. A return ride for about 2 kilometres leaves us all spellbound.

A day visit to Chidambaram and Exploring the Mangroves of Pichavaram

Unlike the beaches in india, the mangroves of pichavaram are less known and not crowed with tourists yet. not many people have even heard of it, this vast expanse of mangrove is still less explored. it is it is said that there are over 700 islands, 4000 canals, 200 species of birds and various other forms of wildlife here..

The Painted stork in the mangrove bush in the middle of the backwaters of Pichavaram on the east coast of Tamil Nadu eyed us little suspiciously as we neared its nesting place. The eeried silence around us was distrubed by the genle splash of oars splashing the placid water.

As we approached to get a closer view of the bird with colourful plumage, it launched his elegant long wings in full span soaring gracefully towards sky.

Natures work of Art

A Perfect dancer indeed !. I thought , as i watched it glide effortlessly. And not surprisingly that morning I had visited the Nataraja temple at Chidambaram which revolves around the dancing Lord Shiva.Soon I had a vision of the dance competition that the temple priest had described between the Lord and fierce goddgess Kali in the Nrithya Sabha ( dancing hall ) within the temple complex.

According to the legend , the tempo of the ballet reached its zenith as the goddess matche Shivas every move and step. The two danced in a spiralling frenzy through cosmic time when suddenly one of the shivas earrings shook free and fell on the floor.Withour breaking  the rhythm of his dance, shiva picked it up with his toes in a trance and with Urdhwa Thandava ( graceful kick of the leg ) attached it back onto his ear.The move, a definite male gesture left the goddess mesmarised.

With no other option but to accept defeat, the goddess strode off to brood in the secluded woods. At a distance of about 3 km from the town stands a Thillai Kali Amman temple dedicated to the goddess who demands the attention fo Pilgrims.

                                            Nataraja - Lord of Dance

Eighteen handed idol of Lord of Dance featuring 81 mudras of Bharatanatyam at 1st cave temple, Badami in Karnataka

The beauty of the Chidambaram temple is that it is vast  complex. Many smaller temples with their own courtyards and huge tank exist here,Of Particular beauty is the Nrithya Sabha where devadasis danced on special occassions like temple festivals in the presence of royality.

A multi pillared structure with exquisitely carved details, the Nrithya Sabha rests on the stone wheels with figures of horses pulling it to denote that the whole structure is designed to look like a chariot which relives the dance contest carved in thousands of etchings on the stone columns.Sure enough there is one panel that captures shivas devastating final move, the left sweeping tip to touch his ear.

According to legend the dance duel was a prelude to Shivas dance of bliss, which is the focus and essence of the Nataraja temple. However, this holy spot on earth, which was to serve as his sacred  arena fell in the domain of goddess Kali and she agreed to leave the place only if defeated in adance duel.Once the Lord earned this right,he preceeded to perform the cosmic dance, which enshrined in the form of Nataraja ( Dancing Shiva ) within the gold plated roof of Chith Sabha ( Hall of Consciousness ).

Indeed Chidambaram is Unique,it is the only Shiva temple in the country where he is worshipped as a dancing Nataraja rahter than a lingam. The 10 day long Natyanjali dance festival conducted by Sangeet Natak Akademy held in June/July and Dec/Jan/Feb attracts huge crowd of classical dancers across the globe.

pichavaram mangrove forest tourism

I, however set out from the hustle bustle of the temple town to witness the never ending dance of nature and live orchestra at avian heaven over the backwaters of Pichavaram just 15 km from the temple. The rickety city bus transported us to a boat house maintained by TTDC after passing through narrow roads and vast paddy fields .After a quick meal a the restaruant I boarded the long narrow boat and set out to explore parts of some 3000 acres of mangrove forests that seemed to float on the backwaters.

Our boatman Sampath  said that there are over 1000 big and small islands and an endless network of waterways, Caves, Canals to watch. Recently some movies too have been shot here.

The mangrove wetland is home to a variety of rich flora and fauna population. It also attracts appreciable species of birds few local and true migrants. So far 171 birds have been identified here and is a paradise for bird watchers. The Mangrove shrubs are said to protect the coastal regions from erosion and apparently Pichavaram Mangroves were responsible  to have protected the regions around Chidambaram from Tsunami in 2004

As we explored deeper and deeper into the backwaters the mangrove forests started to close in around us.The boatman with his expertise manouvered through the canals tucked under the Canopy of trees.

Once in awhile i could see pied kignfishers dive into water and disappear in the mangrove clump.I started to wonder if the baotmen knew his way out of the network. It was like a big maze and coming out of it,seemed a challenge.

pichavaram mangrove forest tourism

We finally emerged out into open space successfully once again, though we didnot find much birdlife duirng out visit.I learnt that the season was in September - January when flock of migratory birds come here to breed.

Pichavaram was really a rejuvenating trip indeed in the temple trail of Tamil Nadu.

FEW TIPS ABOUT PICHAVARA M

  • Boat tours through Pichavaram are managed by the  (TTDC )Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation. The cheapest rides are just for namesake, wherein you just approach the Mangrove and are back to jetty. Boatmen demand tips if its a group
  • Boat timings are 8:30 AM to 5 PM for the mangroves and you can choose from Motor or Pedal boats.Check at office for revised timings
  • Motor boat rides however  do not take you through the narrow creeks, as they can only be maneuvered through manually.
  • If you happen to ride down the road towards the government-run Pichavaram boat tour office, you will be accosted by few local fishermen who will promise a better deal or better experience than the TTDC. Don’t fall for it.
  • Lastly, Pichavaram Mangroves are nothing short, aplace of sanctity. Be quiet, respect wildlife and you are in their  habitat. If you visit this mystical paradise, please be a responsible tourist! Respect nature Don’t litter, and if you have any trash, Carry it back with you !

Pichavaram - History, Timings & Entry Fee

pichavaram mangrove forest tourism

India | TamilNadu | Chidambaram

#2 of 12 places to visit in chidambaram, distance (from chidambaram): 16 kms, visited from: chidambaram, trip duration (including travel): 2-3 hours, place location: not available, transportation options: bus / cab, website: na, phone no: na, place address: na, travel tips: none.

At a distance of 16 km from Chidambaram & 217 km from Chennai, Pichavaram is an exquisite coastal village near Chidambaram in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the picturesque places to visit near Chennai and among the must include places in Chidambaram packages . Located between the Vellar estuary and Coleroon estuary, Pichavaram is well-known for its mangrove forests spread over 1100 hectares area. The mangroves of Pichavaram are considered the second largest mangrove forests in the world. Apparently, the forest has more than 50 islands of various sizes and 4,400 big and small canals. The trees grow in water that's 3 to 10 feet deep in different places. The conditions are quite hostile, as the sea's tides bring saltwater in and out twice a day, changing the salinity. Hence, the trees have unique root systems, with membranes that only allow fresh water to enter. It is one of the popular Chidambaram tourist places . Pichavaram can be enjoyed through a boat ride around the 1100 hectare area of the forest, which takes you through narrow canals, breathtaking sceneries and allows you to witness the amazing life forms of the mangrove trees while adoring the birdlife of the forest. Approximately 200 species of birds have been recorded, along with many varieties of seaweed, fish, prawns, crabs, oysters, turtles, and otters. There are around 20 different varieties of trees in the mangrove forest as well. The sea is just 6 km from the forest and one can see the sandbank which separates the forest from the Bay of Bengal during the boat ride. Students and scientists from across India come to study the mangrove forest and its incredible biodiversity. Boat Timings: 8 AM - 5 PM Entry: Rs. 300 for Row Boat, & Rs. 1700 for Motor Boat

Explore the picturesque Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

 alt=

The Pichavaram mangrove forests, some 70 km south of Pondicherry and 15 km east of Chidambaram, is a scenic location deservingly celebrated in Malayalam and Tamil movies. This large expanse of greenery is the second largest protected mangrove forest in India.

Recently, three women, inspired by the stunning visuals of this mangrove forest as depicted in films, embarked on a tour of the place. During this journey, they also proved a point that medium-haul two wheeler drive is not a male prerogative. The women here used Scooty for their sojourn.

Although the journey from Pondicherry to Pichavaram should not take more than an hour or so, the women took it easy and stopped over at places, enjoying the picturesque locations on the way and taking time for selfies.

Chidambaram temple itself is a scenic location. Its ornate tower and the sculptures adorning the structures around will astound anyone.

The Pichavaram protected mangrove forests, one of the biggest of its kind in the world, can be visited between 8 am and 5 pm. There is a facility for boating in the relatively shallow waterbody fringed by thick growth of mangroves.

Normally, the boat charges about Rs 400 for a one hour trip for three. There are other packages to choose from. The mangroves, spread over 51 islets, is home to some 200 varieties of birds. Tasting the food cooked with the ingredients sourced from the waterbody around should positively form part of the tour.

The Pondy Ocean Park on the way back is an adventure theme park with numerous land and water activities. It is a must-visit place for people touring Pondicherry and nearby places. The entry fee here is Rs 300.

All you need to know about Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

My experience at Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

We started around 10am in the morning and reached Pichavaram Mangrove Forest at 1 pm. After we reached the first thing is to collect your tickets for the boat ride, across the mangrove forest that is spread around 2800 acres of back waters with a group of small islands. there are paid motor boats and also row boats for rent on the basis of an hour, it is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Tourism board. There are also facilities of house boats as we saw a huge board displaying House Boat. You can get all the information in the counter. The mangroves are the best place for bird watching. We rented a motor boat for 2 hours and its best because the weather was not that merciful on us. The best time to visit is throughout the whole year.

All you need to know about Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

Take your own drinking water and also some snacks especially if you are with kids because for food you shall have to travel again a long way to Chidambaram. While going for the boat ride in Pichavaram Mangrove Forest make sure you hire a motor boat with shade. Wear something light and comfortable, as you will really feel the heat. Keep your heads covered with caps/hats. The boat which we rented had a huge cover, so that was a big relief from the harsh rays of the sun.

About Pichavaram

A serene island located far off from cities, Pichavaram is famous for the mangrove forests. Pichavaram mangrove forest has the distinction of being the second largest mangrove forest in the world. Take a boat or a canoe and paddle the lanes between the mangroves, and feel secluded from the rest of the world.

Pichavaram is situated in Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu, near to Chidambaram. It is situated between the Vellar estuary and Coleroon estuary in north and south respectively. The Pichavaram mangroves and Killai backwater originate from the Vellar-Coleroon estuarine. Water sports like rowing, kayaking and canoeing have good scope in these backwaters. And they interlinked by the Coleroon and Vellar river system. And this makes Pichavaram one of the notable tourist spot to plan a trip in south India. Pichavaram offers spectacular waterscape and it can be enjoyed on affordable cruises there. Boating through more than 400 routes is another attraction here.

There are many islands spread across the vast waterscape with natural vegetation. Hence, It is a well-developed one among other mangrove forests. The mangrove has an area about 1100 hectare and is parted from the sea by a sandbar.

The Pichavaram ecosystem is consist of many rare species. It is rich with flora and fauna such as Avicennia and Rhizophora which is attractions of the place. Rare, valuable shell and fish like finfishes existing in this biotope. And it is home to venomous snakes also. The Pichavaram is prosperous with birds that include real migrants, local migrants and residents. Wide varieties of birds like pelicans, spoonbills, herons, cormorants and snipes etc., are available here. This is the reason for bird watchers and nature lovers to get attracted to this land. September to April is considered as the best time to watch birds. During November to January bird’s peak population is found here. It is due to the arrival of true migrants from abroad and migrants from Indian breeding grounds coincidentally.

The place is accessible by road from Chidambaram, bus from Pondicherry and a four hour drive from Chennai. Chennai to Pichavaram is just about 250 Km distance and boating in the island adds beauty to one’s trip. Rhizophora and Avicennia are the two widely distributed tree species throughout the forest. Visiting the island in between November and January is ideal for bird seeing.

The boatmen who offer ride are friendly and innocent. Row boats are most preferred than the motor boats as it would avail us to delve and go to the interior parts of the mangroves and it takes 2 to 2.30 hrs for a round trip. The depth of the water is three feet, not-so-dangerous to perform stunts but it is advisable not to venture as the water is muddy. The rich water species such as pied kingfishers, dolphins, sea otters, crabs, and silver hued fishes adds beauty to the vacation tour.

The dawn festival attracts multitudes of tourists to witness the fest. The features of the festival are observing the fishing style of Irula tribes, folk and traditional music shows, sea food dinner, and bird watch and boat ride early in the morning. The people interested in backwater and nature should check in here.

If you had watched Kamal Hassan’s blockbuster hit “Kallai mattum kandaal” song in “Dasavathaaram” movie never would you resist the urge to jot a plan for the forest in Pichavaram.

Rowing through the backwaters at Pichavaram mangrove forest

pichavaram mangrove forest tourism

Pichavaram is one of those destinations which no one has heard of, a place which you know about only while googling “Things to see near ……….. <insert a popular place>. It was the same for me, I found out about Pichavaram only while searching for tourist places near Tanjore. I was on a 5 day trip of Tamil Nadu which included Srirangam, Thanjavur, Chidambaram and Pondicherry, all popular destinations along the Corromandel coast. My initial plan was to stop for a couple of hours at Chidambaram and visit the famous Nataraja temple while travelling from Thanjavur to Pondicherry. I later found about Pichavaram on reading few travel blogs and was fascinated by the images of the canopied mangrove forests with boats sailing through the narrow channels. I added Pichavaram to the itinerary but only as an option to be included only if I had enough time after visiting the Nataraja temple.

After toiling through the scorching sun for two days and exploring the heritage city of Thanjavur, the beautiful Chola temples, ancient architectures and museums, I boarded a local bus to Chidambaram around 10 AM in the morning. The bus was packed with passengers clinging to every inch of space on the handrail. The hot summer waves dashed on my face through an open window without the glass shields. I had been on multiple such agonizing journeys in the past, I adjusted myself, tied a handkerchief around my face, slipped in my shades and leaned against the window, looking out in reverie. Once the bus starts moving through the landscapes, you tend to forget what’s on the other side and the journey becomes little more tolerable.

I reached Chidambaram around 2 PM, had a quick lunch and walked to the Thillai Nataraja temple passing through a bustling market. On reaching, I found that the temple was closed and would reopen at 4:30 PM, so without wasting more time, I took an autorickshaw back to the bus stop and enquired about buses to Pichavaram. There aren’t many buses to Pichavaram though out the day but I was fortunate that one bus was scheduled to arrive in next half an hour. I waited at the designated bus bay for about 45 mins after which the bus arrived. To my frustration, after halting, the driver jumped out of the bus, slammed the small door beside the driver’s seat and proceeded to a nearby eatery for lunch. I had no option but to wait till he finished his meal and returned. The trip to Pichavaram is a short one; about 12 kms and takes about 30 mins. The bus stops in front of the ticket counter. There are separate tickets for 2, 4 seater row boats and 8 seater motorboats. The motorboats don’t venture into the interiors of the mangrove forest but are preferred by travelers with large families or kids as they are more comfortable and has a shade. I bought a ticket for a row boat, washed my face, filled the water bottles, slipped in a flashy lifejacket and was ready for another hour or two in the open sun.

Barely 5 minutes into the ride and the boatman will ask you the inevitable question – “Do you want to visit the interior sections of the mangrove forest ?” This is a quick way for them to make few extra bucks and tourists do oblige. The boatman initially demanded 500 rupees to take me to the dense sections of the forest, as in the real deal area where apparently some South Indian movies were shot, he finally settled for 200 rupees. I believe the place must be crowded on weekends but since it was a Tuesday, there were very few boats. We rowed through picturesque mangroves that canopied to look like a tunnel and provide shade. It was refreshing to row through the serene mangroves, we halted at multiple places and took some good photographs.

It was tough for me to interact with the boatman who understood Hindi but spoke only Tamil. Juggling between broken Hindi, English and Tamil, in the limited conversation that we could manage, I was happy to learn about the herculean efforts that the state government has undertaken to develop Pichavaram as a tourist destination. The boatman had worked his entire life as a fisherman in the same backwaters but few years back under the guidance of the tourism department, he managed to make the transition and work as a boatman for the tourists. Now he works less and earns more, he also gets to interact with folks coming from all over the country; not to forget, the additional bucks for showing the movie spots. As promised, he made sure I see the exact places where those movies were shot; I felt that was something he was really excited about. I enjoyed the couple of hours that I spent rowing through the mangrove forest. I would have missed out on an amazing place had I just visited the Nataraja temple.

pichavaram mangrove forest tourism

I returned to Chidambaram and reached the Nataraja temple around 5:30 PM, just in time to witness the mesmerizing aarti of Lord Nataraja. The aarti is followed by a glimpse of what is known as Chidambara Rahasiyam (the secret of Chidambaram). On the right side of the Nataraja idol, there is a chamber ensconced behind a dark curtain. For a few seconds the priests pull the curtains and one can see golden figurines in the empty sanctum inside. Chidambaram is the only temple where Lord Shiva is worshiped in all three forms – Nataraja (the physical form), Shivalinga (the semi-physical form) and as the all pervading, “the formless one”. The temple is a celebration of the celestial dance of Lord Shiva, therefore dance as an art form is patronized here and is a crucial element of the temple folklore. In the evening, classical dance is performed by trained artists within the temple premises.

pichavaram mangrove forest tourism

After having darhsan of Lord Nataraja, I left for Pondicherry. There are frequent bus services between Chidamabaram and Cuddalore which is near Pondicherry. I had been to Pondicherry in the past, so I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about it but Pondi is too good a place to pass when you are around. I stayed at Pondicherry for one day and then returned to Bangalore. Hope you liked this post. Mangrove in India is world famous for its rich variety of flora and fauna and also for its huge area. The Mangroves are actually salt-tolerant plants of tropical and subtropical inter-tidal regions and they are mainly found in the Godavari-Krishna and Sunderban regions in India. https://www.indianetzone.com/40/mangrove_india.htm

A day trip to second largest Mangrove Forest - Pichavaram

Photo of Escape Route: Travel And Food Blog By Saloni Aggarwal

We stayed in Le Pondy, Pondicherry for our visit to Pichavaram . We started our journey at 11 in the morning. Although, it was February, the weather was quite humid, we were little confused wondering if its a good idea to go to Pichavaram , but anyways we decided to go for it..!! And I was glad that we came..!!

Pichavaram is just 70 Kms drive from Puducherry through NH37 and we reached there in another 2.5 hours and on the way we had breakfast.

Pichavaram is a village located near to Chidamabaram in Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu. The village is located between the Vellar estuary in the north and Coleroon estuary in the south. The Vellar-Coleroon estuarine complex forms the Killai backwater and the mangroves that are permanently rooted in a few feet of water. The main attraction in Pichawaram is the Mangrove forest and the boat ride.

Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

Pichavaram mangrove forest are located about 15 kms from Chidambaram. These mangroves are the second largest mangroves in the world after Sundarbans. They were originally known as Thillai Vana and has a significant role in the area's heritage.

At the borading point

The forest is spread ver 1,100 hectares and joins the Bay of Bengal, where it's separated by a lengthy sand bank. the forest has more than 50 islands of various sizes, and 4,400 big and small canals.

The mangroves attracts migrants and local birds including snipes, cormorants, egrets, storks, herons, spoonbills and pelicans. About 177 species of birds belonging to 15 orders and 41 families have been recorded.

A few meters into the back waters, you reach the mangroves that look like a gateway into forest.

The mangrove forest can be explored through row boat or motor boat. We choose to take row boat as we were only two people and had enough time, however motor boats are ideal for sizeable groups, one can get through the forest in couple of hours. I would recommend to go for a boat ride if you are interested in venturing deep inside the mangrove jungle.

The boating activities are operated by The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation and Tamil Nadu Forest Department but local non-governments boatsmen are also available. There are various packages depending on number of people, boat type, and number of hours.

This is where one gets a little mischievous and strikes a deal with the boat man. The boat operator will ask you more money for taking you inside the small canals (where normally the visitors are not allowed in the tickets bought). I would suggest to go for it its worth paying but you will need to negotiate with directly and seriously it workd. The boat man quoted us 12oo rs more but finally he cam down to 300 rs.

Photo of A day trip to second largest Mangrove Forest - Pichavaram by Escape Route: Travel And Food Blog By Saloni Aggarwal

The boat operator informed us that the water level here is just 3 feet deep but the mud is sludgy. It is not advisable to get off the boat in case you feel to have a short dive!!

Photo of A day trip to second largest Mangrove Forest - Pichavaram by Escape Route: Travel And Food Blog By Saloni Aggarwal

Sometimes, when there is little sunlight, as the boat cruises slowly in silence, the pathway looks eerie as if it is closing in on you, you wonder if the boat can actually navigate the narrow turns

Photo of A day trip to second largest Mangrove Forest - Pichavaram by Escape Route: Travel And Food Blog By Saloni Aggarwal

This is how mesmerisingly beautiful it gets, you would want to do nothing else other than sit in that boat and go around the mangroves till the end of the day !

Insights for Visitors:

1. November to February is the best time to visit the forest.

2. its just 2 hours drive from Puducherry and 30 mins drive from Chidambaram. So, please add this to your list

3. Boat Timing : 8 AM to 5 PM

4. Avoid visiting the place on public holidays or weekends as there me large crowd

5. Charges : 2 seater rowboat - 220/- for 2 kms/2 hours

4 Seater motor boat - 400/- 5kms/2 hours (but motor boats will not go dense inside the forest)

8 seater motorboat - 800/-/2 hours

6. Please carry your own food as options are limited.

7. Nearest station is Chidambaram and from there need to take buses/taxis to Pichavaram which is just 15 kms. Bus fare is just 7/- and Taxi from Chidambaram to Pichavaram and back would cost around 700/-

8. People speak broken English so language could be a problem.

Happy Travelling..!!

A man sets out in a small flat-bottomed boat on a wide and placid river with dense palms and other vegetation on the banks

‘Husband eaters’: the double loss of Bangladesh’s ostracised tiger widows

After the trauma of losing their spouse and breadwinner to the Sundarbans’ great predator, women are cast out by their superstitious communities. But they are coming together to rebuild their lives

N obody saw exactly what happened in the minutes leading up to Aziz Murad’s death. But when his friends got back to the boat where they had left him, they found only his severed hand in the fishing net he was untying.

“We were only gone for about five minutes,” says Abu Sufyan, who was first to reach the boat. “When we got back, he was gone and there was blood everywhere.”

Conflict between people and wildlife is intensifying across the planet as habitat loss, growing populations and the climate crisis fuel competition for fertile, habitable land. In the Sundarbans, on the southern coast of Bangladesh, an estimated 300 people and 46 tigers have been killed in human-tiger conflict since 2000.

A tiger lying down, looking at the camera through grassy undergrowth

Bangladesh’s Sundarbans is the world’s largest contiguous mangrove forest . The Unesco world heritage site – a maze of islands, winding creeks and mudflats – is home to a huge variety of plants and animals. It is also a sanctuary for some of the world’s most endangered species, including the largest single population of Bengal tigers.

Over the next few decades, researchers predict that climate change and rising sea levels mean no suitable tiger habitat will be left in the Sundarbans by 2070. According to Bangladesh’s last census, 114 tigers are estimated to remain; down from 440 in 2004. The results of the latest census are expected in July.

But it is not only tigers that face an existential threat. More than 3.5 million people live on the edge of the Sundarbans, eking out an existence by fishing, collecting honey or wood, and subsistence farming. More than 40% of households are below the poverty line, but the climate emergency has made life here even harder.

As sea levels rise, islands disappear and increasing water salinity threatens the health of mangrove forests and the quality of soil and crops. Disruptions to fish populations also create disastrous consequences for communities.

As a result, desperate villagers are often left with little choice but to venture deeper into the forest, making them more vulnerable to tiger attacks. The intensive exploitation of the forest is also forcing tigers to leave the forest in search of food, targeting livestock and humans.

The Bangladesh government is constructing a 40-mile fence to keep tigers and people out of each other’s territories and has set up 49 tiger-response teams in an effort to lessen the conflict.

These groups of villagers are trained to scare tigers back into the forest, monitor local human-tiger conflicts and stop other local people killing tigers. The teams, with Bangladesh’s Forest Department, might release dozens of tigers back into the forest over a year, preventing harm to both animals and people.

But they could not save Aziz Murad. On a cool spring morning in Koyra, a coastal sub-district of Khulna, Murad’s widow, Shuna Banu, 43, sits in the shade of a banana tree and recounts how her life changed that fateful day.

“I remember receiving the phone call,” she says. “Though tiger attacks are common in this area, nothing prepared me for what would come next.”

The attack in 2020 did not just leave Banu without a husband; it turned her into an outcast overnight. In a superstitious society where being a “tiger widow” carries its own stigma, she was considered cursed and ultimately blamed for her husband’s death.

Banu joined hundreds of other women living in the Sundarbans region referred to as swami khejos – “husband eaters”.

“You won’t find a family here that hasn’t been affected,” says Maksudur Rahman, chief executive of the Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (Beds). “Villagers live in constant fear of death. In almost every neighbourhood, there are women whose husbands were killed by tigers.”

Banu’s in-laws decided she could no longer stay with them in case she brought bad luck, so she moved back in with her parents. In a rural area that relies on agriculture and fishing, she says tiger widows like her are prevented from undertaking traditional occupations.

“Not only did I lose my husband, I lost my right to a dignified life,” she says. Confined to her parents’ small mud hut and unable to work, Banu fell further into poverty.

A few doors away lives Reshma Khatun, 38, whose husband was killed in a tiger attack four years ago. Abdul Gazi had been collecting honey from the Sundarbans for more than a decade. One evening, as he was getting ready to cook at a camp in the forest, a tiger pounced on him.

Since his death, Khatun has struggled to provide for their two boys. Tiger widows are meant to receive government compensation of 300,000 taka (£2,190) but in reality it is difficult to make a claim and the amount is not sufficient for families who have lost their sole breadwinner. Women widowed before the policy came into effect in 2011 are also ineligible.

Across the Kholpetua River, in an old rickety house on the edge of the forest, lives 60-year-old Jamiroon Bibi. Her husband was killed by a tiger during a fishing trip nearly two decades ago. In that time, she has watched countless other women become pariahs after losing their husbands to tiger attacks.

“People around here have always been superstitious. But why should we have to suffer because of some age-old folklore that makes witches out of widows – and pits us against one another?” she asks.

T he aim of Beds is to create employment opportunities for vulnerable communities living around the Sundarbans, including tiger widows, while at the same time protecting the environment. “Our mission has always been to promote ecological balance and create harmony between humans and their environment,” says Rahman.

“Nature has always provided for those who have little,” he adds. “But the people here have nothing – so they over-harvest what they can, putting pressure on the entire ecosystem.”

To reduce dependence on forest resources, the non-profit organisation has helped set up two cooperatives employing local women, including tiger widows, who are taught how to harvest honey and plants responsibly to produce sustainable non-timber forest products, including juice, mango pickle and traditional handicrafts.

The women gather raw materials from communal areas rather than the forest and are involved in the entire process, from collection and processing to packaging and labelling.

“We also help them to market and sell the products at a fairer price,” says Rahman. The women earn about 25,000 taka a month, with the initiative helping more than 300 households so far.

Many tiger widows are now earning a living and regularly visit one another, sharing meals and taking turns to look after the children when one of them has to work.

“Society will always find ways to blame women,” says Bibi, looking out into the vastness of the Sundarbans beyond her small veranda. “Life here is difficult enough, we don’t need to burden ourselves any further.”
