Discover and visit Paris La Défense

Discover and visit Paris La Défense © Sabrina Budon

Paris La Défense is a district straddling several towns in the Hauts-de-Seine, it is also a business district, the first in Europe and the fourth in the world.

It is a meeting place for thousands of people who, every day, go to work in one of the countless towers or the Arche de La Défense, stroll along the esplanade to discover the artworks that line it or go shopping in one of the two emblematic places of the business district, CNIT and Westfield Les 4 Temps, which welcome more than 63 million visitors a year.

It will take you more than a day to visit the business district, starting from the access to the roof of the Grande Arche, which is 110 metres high and offers a panoramic view of the streets of the capital. Once your feet are back on the ground, you can visit Paris La Défense Art Collection, which offers more than 60 artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries with free access, and then stroll through the André Malraux Park and its 25 hectares of greenery designed by the landscape gardener Jacques Sgard or admire the view from the Japan Bridge pedestrian footbridge.

As lunch time approaches, go to one of the countless restaurants along your route or, for those who wish to have a quick lunch in the open air, to one of our famous Food Trucks which you will find at the Grande Arche, Place de la Défense, Bassin de Takis and Cours Valmy.

Afterwards, all that's left for you to do is stroll through the Westfield Les 4 Temps shopping centre, which includes fashion, electronics and multimedia, interior design and much more.

You can end your day on the 19th floor of Hotel Meliá, with the panoramic view of the Skyline Lounge Bar, which, thanks to its rooftop concept, allows you to enjoy a selection of cocktails and tapas while admiring the setting sun. All that remains for you to do is to relax in one of the hotels in the La Défense district, including the Hilton Hotel at the foot of the Grande Arche, to recover from a busy day.

Geographical location of the district and history

Paris La Défense straddles four communes: Courbevoie, Puteaux, Nanterre and La Garenne-Colombes. The district of La Défense is located in the extension of the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées. The Arc de Triomphe can be seen from the esplanade. It is the historic route of Paris, or Voie Royale, it crosses the west of Paris from the Louvre to part of the Hauts-de-Seine. And if one were to draw a line of the Voie Royale on a map, it would start from the equestrian statue of Louis XIV, in the Napoleon courtyard of the Louvre, to pass through the Tuileries garden, the Place de la Concorde, the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe, the Avenue de la Grande Armée, then cross Neuilly-sur-Seine and reach La Défense.

Between architecture and living space

The birth of this business district is seen as a unique urban development project. The geometry of the buildings and the symmetry of the lines are worth the diversion: it is a true architectural wealth where the eye will be surprised to capture the decor through reflections, colours and shapes, where atmosphere and light dance through the day offering an atypical spectacle.

Architects, town planners and landscape designers have turned these spaces into a place where the minerality of the buildings, green gardens, forecourts, esplanades, fountains and artwork blend in with the minerality of the buildings, offering the thousands of people who pass through here every day a pleasant, peaceful and dynamic place to live, where you can walk around on foot, without cars or noise pollution.

How to get to Paris La Défense?

All the roads lead to La Défense as the service is so optimised: RER, metro, bus, road network, easily transport pedestrians. There are numerous car parks for cars and recharging facilities for electric vehicles. Bicycles and other scooters have their own spaces dedicated to traffic and parking.

Let's not forget that La Défense is the largest pedestrian area in Europe, and a pedestrian area means priority for pedestrians! A real guide to cohabitation between pedestrians and two-wheeled vehicles has therefore been put in place to make it easier for everyone to move around in complete safety and to share the public space in a respectful manner.

The projects of Paris La Défense

As the architect François Leclerq put it so well, "A finished city is a city that does not renew itself, that dies". On the contrary, Paris La Défense is constantly renewing itself! With new projects and the continuous renovation of its towers, a symbol of its attractiveness and economic development, Paris La Défense is "living" in a real sustainable development approach.

André Malraux park

At a short walking distance from the Grande Arche is the André Malraux Park , constructed between 1970 and 1978 mostly on the cuttings from La Défense construction site.

The 60 acres of the park were designed by Jacques Sgard to fit seamlessly into the urban landscape thanks to curves and swirls.

It is composed of large lawns – perfect for family picnics – and more covert areas which are ideal to rest a bit. You can contemplate the birds nesting in the reeds of the pond or read a book in the shadow of the maples.

Pl. Japan Bridge, 92800 Puteaux, France

Japan Bridge

Hanging about 16 feet above the D914 road, between the Pacifique tower and the Kupka building, the Japan Bridge offers an amazing view of La Défense district.

It was built in 1994 by the architect Kisho Kurokawa and inspired by traditional Japanese bridges. It is a thousand feet long tunnel made of glass and steel, hanging from two arches meeting in its center.

The view of La Défense’s different architectural constructions is breathtaking.

The bridge connects to the two buildings through enormous cuts.

We love : that it’s freely accessible.

The shopping center Les Quatre Temps opened in March 1981. It was the largest shopping mall at the time, thanks to its 150,000 square yards of space. Even though its surface area has been greatly exceeded by others since its opening, it remains the most visited shopping center in France.

At first, Les Quatre Temps was supposed to house several luxury boutiques but it was decided that an Auchan (big supermarket) and other mass-consumer-oriented brands would be better suited.

You can wander in its 219 fashion, interior decorations and electronics stores – and many more.

There are well-known brands such as Camaïeu, Body’ Minutes, Desigual, Kiko, Xiaomi, etc.

We love: the fact that you can also watch a movie at the UGC and eat at one of the 46 restaurants in the mall.

La Défense, Paris

Welcome to the modern financial district of the French capital, we tell you about its history and everything you can see in this incredible place.

places to visit in la defense paris

Within Europe, the French capital is famous not only for its exceptional architectural and cultural heritage, but also for a modern business district called La Défense , located to the west of the city center and comparable to the City of London .

With great importance within the neighborhoods of Paris for its 3 million m2 of offices, some 1,500 companies, 150,000 employees, 2 million tourists a year and 11 hectares of green areas, today we want to tell you its story and why you can’t stop knowing him.

Brief history

places to visit in la defense paris

The La Défense neighborhood in Paris began to take its first steps in the 1950s, when the authorities chose this area on the outskirts of Paris, whose purpose was mostly residential and industrial, to create an important financial district.

CNIT (National Center for Industries and Technologies) was built with its singular triangular vault shape , and then dozens of towers and skyscrapers began to rise simultaneously, giving a modern air and making a clear contrast with classic Paris.

In 1981, what was once the largest shopping center in Europe, Les Quatre Temps, was created, today the largest and most visited in France . In this area there are also some 60 works of contemporary art and some hanging gardens, as if it were an open-air museum.

In addition, to favor the flow of traffic and not obstruct the views of the Historical Axis, the “Dalle” was built, a platform that ingeniously hides all transport links and creates a pedestrian area that offers beautiful views of the Arc de Triomphe in the distance .

The central business district that makes up the La Défense area in Paris is not actually a French commune, since its territory is shared by three municipalities: Courbevoie, Nanterre and Puteaux, which are part of the Hauts-de-Seine department.

The origin of his name

As a curious fact, we tell you that the name of La Défense comes from a bronze statue with the same name, erected in 1883 by Louis-Ernest Barrias to commemorate the soldiers who defended Paris during the Franco-Prussian war. Who’d say?

What to see in La Defense

places to visit in la defense paris

The skyscrapers in La Défense Paris are one of the main things to see in this district, and the one that attracts the most attention is the gigantic and impressive Arc de la Défense in Paris.

Opened in 1989, it is an office building that is 110 meters high by 112 meters deep. It is so large that it could contain Notre-Dame Cathedral within its arch, and is especially attractive for its contemporary outline of white marble .

You can go up to the Grand Arch every day from 10am to 7pm (last ascent at 6:30pm) and stroll along its 100m long terrace, before enjoying spectacular views of the French capital rivaled only by those offered by the iconic Eiffel Tower .

More places to visit in La Défense in Paris

places to visit in la defense paris

Although this area is known for hosting the headquarters of numerous French and international companies, including the European Banking Authority, it is also an incredible place for sightseeing outside of central Paris , as is Disneyland Paris .

Among the best things to see in La Défense Paris we have the huge Les Quatre Temps shopping center, the bronze statue that gives the district its name and the beautiful André Malraux park, as well as some of the works of contemporary art scattered throughout the area.

In your search for these treasures you may come across César’s Pouce (thumb), Joan Miro’s characters, Yaacov Agam’s Fontaine Monumentale, a piece of the Berlin Wall and many more wall paintings, statues and different types of installations.

In the same way, we do not want to fail to mention the great Christmas market that takes place in La Défense every year, where you can find all kinds of crafts, details, gifts and a lot of typical food for these dates. It is the best plan if you are going to spend Christmas in Paris .

How to get to La Defense

places to visit in la defense paris

The central business district of La Défense is really accessible by public transport . Next, we list all the possible ways to get there:

  • RER train : line A, La Défense Grande Arche station.
  • Metro : line 1, stations La Défense Grande Arche and Esplanade de la Défense.
  • Tram : line 2, La Défense Grande Arche station.
  • Bus: no. 73, 141, 158 and 159.
  • Commuter train Transilien: lines U (La Défense-Verrière) and L (Paris Saint-Lazare-Versailles/Saint Nom La Bretèche)

Also, by 2024, it is estimated that the E line of RER trains, coming from Gare du Nord , will call at La Défense. So wherever you stay, it won’t be hard for you to get there.

Now that you know the importance of the modern neighborhood of La Défense and why you should definitely include it in your itinerary when you go on a trip to the French capital, what do you think if you continue discovering everything there is to see in Paris and the best options of accommodation ?

Place de La Défense: What to do in Paris’s Business District

You are currently viewing Place de La Défense: What to do in Paris’s Business District

  • Post category: Paris & Île-de-France
  • Post author: Nassie Angadi

If you have ever been to Paris you may have noticed, amongst all the beautiful architecture, that there are not many skyscrapers in the city. Instead, those tall concrete buildings have all been relegated to the west end of the city, in an area known as Place de la Défense .

Dominated by large glass-fronted modern buildings, you can easily spot La Défense from the top of the Eiffel Tower , Arc de Triomphe , and other higher vantage points in the city.

From a distance, La Défense looks likes it belongs in a modern North American city. Essentially this area came about in the 1950s when the decision was made that no one wanted these large office buildings within Paris intra-muros to spoil the look of all those lovely 18-century Hausmannian buildings .

It was decided then, to construct those new office towers in an area west of Paris. This new business area would be placed along the Axe Historique de Paris , showing the movement from Old World to the New Industry. (Only the Tour Montparnasse office building and a few residential buildings in the 13th arrondissement escaped this relegation, and they have been despised by local Parisians ever since.)

The La Défense district is managed by a local government entity known as “Paris La Défense”, which is what all the companies in the area put on their business cards. But while it has “Paris” in its name, the area is not actually within the city of Paris.

axe historique of Paris

It is about 2 miles (4km) outside in the department of Hauts-de-Seine , straddling two nearby towns, Puteaux and Courbovoie. (The town of Neuilly-sur-Seine stands between Paris and Place de la Défense.)

Today, La Défense is a hub for multinational corporations and is considered the largest business district in Europe, with the highest concentration of offices.

It is home to some of the biggest French and international companies, including Total, BNP Paribas, KPMG, EY, and Société Générale, in addition to many others.

The main part of La Defense is completely pedestrianized, with cars, busses, parking lots, and even a highway banished to run under an elevated dalle (platform).

Other roads like the Boulevard Circulaire run around that central part, leading to large walkways being constructed to link the nearby towns to La Défense. The result is an asphalt jungle, with small patches of greenery peaking about, meant to disguise all that concrete.

As you can imagine, the locals in the area have a love-hate relationship with La Défense, happy to have it outside the city but reluctant to fall into that commuting trap of métro-boulot-dodo (meaning “ commute-work-sleep “).

From the airport

la defense business district in Paris, France

Access: How to get there

Because it is outside Paris, the La Défense district is one of the most accessible. Close to 500,000 people work, live, and travel to the area every day.

It is located on Metro line 1 , with metro stations La Défense and Esplanade de la Défense located on each end. It is also located on the RER A train line which follows the same path as metro line 1 but is longer, running east-west across much of Grand Paris, Val de Marne and the Yvelines .

Other lines running to La Défense are Tram line T2 and the Transilien trains U and L. There are also several bus lines in the area coming from the western suburbs.

If you are coming to La Défense from the CDG Roissy airport in the north, you can access the area by taking RER line B to the Châtelet -Métro-RER station, and then changing to the RER line A to La Défense station.

If you are coming from Paris-Orly airport in the south of Paris, however, there is no easy way to get to La Défense. You could take the Orly bus to Denfert-Rochereau-Métro-RER, then take the RER B to Châtelet -Métro-RER station, before finally changing to the RER line A to La Défense station.

Escalators in La defense station

If you are travelling in a group, or for business purposes however, I highly recommend taking a taxi! It is a bit of a boondoggle if you are traveling in a group, and especially if you have a lot of luggage.

Plans are in the works to have the CDG Roissy airport connect to La Défense, but these have been temporarily deferred due to the high cost.

Grande Arche de la Défense

When you arrive at La Défense, you will immediately notice one of the most iconic buildings in the world, the Grande Arche.

Grand Arch in La Défense

It is a large rectangular cube building with a hollow middle, quite an impressive feat of architecture.

Construction took 4 years, with the building being completed in 1989. The design was based upon a competition by French President François Mitterrand who selected the Danish team of architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen and engineer Erik Reitzel.

While much of the building remains dedicated to office space, there is a restaurant “Les Jardins de Joséphine” on the top floor under the direction of chef Jean-Christian Dumonet.

The restaurant leads out to a rooftop terrace and garden with expansive views of Paris in the distance. The Grande Arche is directly in line with the Axe Historique de Paris. The distance from the Grande Arche to the Arc de Triomphe is 2.5 miles (4km).

The Grande Arche is flanked on either side by a giant shopping mall that is split into two buildings. The older side is called the CNIT, and this is one of the oldest buildings in La Défense.

Inside CNIT mall

At the time that it was built in the 1950s, this area was just steps away from the bidonvilles de Nanterre , the large slum area which held around 14,000 people in Nanterre.

These days the slums are long gone (or moved), and the CNIT is home to popular shops like electronic giant FNAC and sportswear brand Decathlon.

Quatre Temps (4 Temps) mall

The CNIT mall connects underground to metro station and an underground series of shops, before connecting to the other side, the 4Temps mall.

While there are 20+ shops on the CNIT side, it is the newer 4Temps side that made this one of the biggest malls in Europe. With over 200 shops and restaurants, it is the most visited shopping center in France with 42 million visitors .

4temps mall

There are no high end shops in 4Temps, if you want French brands like Chanel or Louis Vuitton, you will have to visit the Champs Elysées , Avenue Montaigne or Rue Saint Honoré in Paris.

The 4Temps mall instead has more mainstream brands like Zara, H&M, and Aigle. There are also shops for the budget-conscious like C&A and grocery giant Auchan .

Where to stay: Hotels in the area

Being the business district, there are several hotels in La Défense. From 5-star accommodation to long-stay apart-hotels, there is a wide variety to pick from.

Artwork in La Defense

Recommended hotels in the area are:

  • Pullman Hotel €€€€€ – near 4Temps mall.
  • Melia Hotel €€€€ – at Esplanade de la Défense metro with beautiful views of the Arc de Triomphe.
  • Citadines La Défense Paris €€€ – aparthotel (with kitchen) at Esplanade de la Défense metro.

Statue of La Defense

The area La Défense is named after the statue of La Défense de Paris by Louis-Ernest Barrias, which was erected in 1883. It was meant to commemorate the soldiers who defended Paris during the Siege of Paris (1870-71) in Franco-Prussian War .

Statue of La Defense

During the war, German soldiers surrounded the city of Paris defeating the French army of Emperor Napoleon III ( Napoleon Bonaparte ‘s nephew). During the siege, Wilhelm I was proclaimed German Emperor on 18 January 1871 at the Palace of Versailles .

German troops would finally leave after France paid an indemnity of two hundred million francs. (They would return 70 years later during WWII.)

Today, the statue of La Défense is still visible in the center of the business district, but it is quite small and does not usually draw much attention among the tall skyscrapers. It does however remain a visible reminder of the history of this area.

Esplanade de la Défense

La Défense as an area is so large, it is served by 2 metro stations. There is La Defense metro near the Grande Arche, and on the other end close to Paris is the Esplanade de la Défense metro.

View towards Esplanade de la Defense

It can take a good 10 minutes to walk from one end to the other. On the edge of the Seine River, you can see the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel tower from different vantage points of Esplanade de la Défense.

Open-air Art museum

In an attempt to soften up the image of La Défense, several modern sculptures and art projects have been installed across the platform.

Some of the sculptures are permanent such as the Deux personnages fantastiques by Joan Miro, an artist also featured in Centre Pompidou .

Deux personnages fantastiques by Joan Miro in La Défense

Other pieces of art are temporary installations that are regularly renewed, making for a very interesting open air museum.

Restaurants and food trucks

There are several restaurants in both 4temps and CNIT, however there are also new brasseries and bars that have been opened in the main part of La Défense as well.

From the 3 Brasseurs pub to the chic Octopus bar, there are a wide variety of options. There are also restaurants that are under the main platform, with open air terrasses in Quartier Michelet and Quartier Reflets. These can be more difficult to find if you are not familiar with La Défense, but well worth a visit.

Restaurant in Quartier Michelet in La Defense

Several times a year food trucks are also allowed to set up in La Défense, making for a festival atmosphere. All the restaurants and dining options tend to be packed at lunchtime, so be sure to make a reservation or head over before noon in order to secure a table.

Movie theatre

The 4temps mall holds a large movie theatre on the top floor where a wide variety of English and French movies are screened. Unlike many other movie theatres in France, here you will find films in their original language (English), with French subtitles.

Just look for “VO”, meaning “ version originale “, amongst the movie listings, instead of VF, meaning “ version français “. That is, unless you want to watch Star Wars in French.

Paris-La Défense Arena

About 700m behind the Grande Arche de la Défense is the new Paris-La Défense Arena . Built to accommodate the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the arena was completed in 2017.

It regularly hosts rugby matches, concerts, and indoor sports like track and field, with a seating capacity of around 40,000 people.

Christmas Market in December

There are many events and festivals held in La Défense all throughout the year, but the biggest has to be the annual Christmas tradition of the marché de Noël (market) during the month of December.

Christmas market at Paris la Defense, with Grande Arche in the background

Between 30-50 wooden stalls are set up in the center of La Défense in front of the Grande Arche offering everything from raclette sandwiches to toulousian sausages . There are several other local specialities as well as non-traditional things as well, like crystal necklaces, bonbons , candles, beer, and other oddities.

It does get quite crowded with office workers during lunchtime on weekdays, so I recommend visiting outside of those hours. And don’t forget to try the vin chaud !

11 Best Things To Do In La Defense

The gigantic Grande Arche de La Défense, standing on the outer edges of Paris, is a 20th-century counterpart of the Arc de Triomphe.

The monument pays tribute to humanity as well as humanitarian values rather than military accomplishments. It is undoubtedly Paris’ most imposing landmark, beside the Eiffel Tower.

The Grande Arche’s simplicity was only matched by the intricacy of its prestressed beam construction.

The Grande Arche not only takes pride in its place on the western end of the Historical Axis, but urban designers also place it in such a manner that it provides a different viewpoint, with an ideal orientation facing the Eiffel Tower along with the Tour Montparnasse.

Regular tickets are $15.86, discounted tickets are $12.69, and student tickets are $10.58. Visitors who are retired, jobless, or handicapped can obtain discounted tickets. Tickets for youngsters aged 3 to 18 are $7.40. Children under the age of three are admitted free of charge.

Europe’s Skyscrapers at La Defense

La Défense is Europe’s biggest purpose-built commercial zone, comprising 1,450 acres and employing 190,000 people on a daily basis, with 71 glass and steel structures, 20 of which are finished skyscrapers, and there are 24 in the Paris region.

The Hermitage Plaza construction is set to become Europe’s tallest building. There will be three towers in all, with the shortest completed in 2014.

The last two buildings, which will stand 320 meters tall and have 86 storeys, are now under construction. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.

The Musée à Ciel Ouvert was established in 1972 as part of an ambitious public order agenda and offers a one-of-a-kind trip across the commercial area centered around 76 colossal pieces.

Some of the pieces displayed in La Défense are Agram’s Fountain, as well as Miró’s Characters, in addition to Takis’ Pond, Moretti’s Chimney, César’s Thumb, along with Serra’s Slat. This museum is open 24 hours a day and is free to all visitors.

We propose that you buy an art map if you don’t like to skip any artwork, especially those belonging to your favorite artist. This may be obtained from the Info Defense kiosk in the square.

You may also pre-download it from the La Defense site . This website also contains details about guided tours as well as the art pieces themselves.

Nanterre Cathedral

Nanterre Cathedral exists as a Roman Catholic cathedral in the French town of Nanterre. The church houses the Bishop of Nanterre. After the founding of the diocese in 1966, it was renamed Nanterre Cathedral from Nanterre Parish Church.

Saint Geneviève grew up in Nanterre in the year 420 and was raised there. Legend has it that she performed miracles here, including restoring her mother’s eyesight with well water and adding the crypt of the chapel that was previously her house’s cellar.

The shopping mall Westfield Les 4 Temps was established in the early 1980s and refurbished in 2008. In terms of sales, it immediately became France’s leading retail center.

It now has about 200 different businesses, including Europe’s largest Zara, an Auchan supermarket, a UGC cinema, and approximately 50 eateries.

A Westfield Les 4 Temps – CNIT smartphone application can be downloaded on Google Play and the App Store for viewing the center’s timetables, news, and events. You may also make use of click-and-collect assistance, a restroom, and free internet at Les 4 Temps.

Take a Walk at Parc des Anciennes Mairies

This park, situated in the center of the old town, has a surface area of 14,100 m2 and is well-known for its flowers, magnificent trees, playground, and pond. It is a hub of activity and entertainment, hosting events including the Parade and The Giant Farm.

The Royal College of Religious of the Abbaye Sainte-Genevieve was situated on the site, and the first stone was set by Queen Anne of Austria in 1642.

One of the benefits of being in such a busy business center is that there are several food alternatives. Many dozen food trucks started to make visits at La Défense lunch hour in recent years.

There is a wide range of cuisine offered, ranging from fusion to classic French to Italian. They are usually located in Parvis de La Défense, but their location varies often.

Puccia on the road? You’ve got it here. La Puccia is a light and crispy Italian bread baked over a wood fire, ideal for delightful hot sandwiches garnished with fresh ingredients from the region.

During the early hours of the morning, there will be two coffee trucks if you need a coffee to wake you up. A weekly calendar is offered to locate each food truck and location based on the day.

The departmental park, developed by landscaping architect Jacques Sgard and built between 1970 and 1978, is situated in the middle of Nanterre. This beautiful park covers a surface area of 26 hectares and is made up of gentle hills with meandering trails.

Structures surround the park, most notably Jacques Kalisz’s terraced structures to the north. As a result, there is no visible cut separating the park from the neighboring buildings.

Climbing, fishing, running, and street work are all options for sports aficionados. Kids are not left behind, with a typical games area including a merry-go-round available all year. In the summer, there will be a water play area just for them.

This park is a wonderful refuge of serenity and nature in the midst of La Défense’s skyscrapers and structures. Visitors may wander along the tree-lined paths, rest on the lawns, or observe the park’s contemporary artworks.

There are three figures that represent Paris’ defense: a lady clad in National Guard attire, resting on a cannon and clutching a flag, an iconic image of Paris, a young guard who inserts a final cartridge in his gun and a prostrate girl embodies the misery of ordinary people with her sorrowful look and wretched appearance.

Louis-Ernest Barrias began his career as a painter before transitioning to sculpture under the supervision of François Geoffroy. He won the Prix de Rome at the age of 23 and was recruited on the Paris Opera site.

Barrias created a great combination of neoclassical, passionate, and realistic currents via multiple works displayed in public spaces, nourished by structural references to Michelangelo.

the Mélia Paris La Défense hotel

The Skyline Lounge & Bar, located on the 19th floor of the Mélia Paris La Défense hotel, is a must-see in the west of Paris. Consider an exquisite and cozy atmosphere, a patio with an uninterrupted view of Paris and the Eiffel Tower, and a refined drink and tapas menu.

For $15.86, the Skyline bar provides two drink menus: one classic with exquisite tapas and one with distinctive cocktails. The Apple Sky or the End Of All Risk will whisk you away to heaven!

You may order a variety of beverages and tapas while admiring the view from the restaurant’s room or the rooftop patio.

The typical price for an appetizer and a main meal, or a main course including a dessert, is $29.61. The beverages are not included.

The Agam Fountain is a magnificent work of art. It gives a beautiful perspective of the Grande Arche thanks to its mosaic and 66 jets, making it one of the most romantic sites in Paris La Défense.

Yaacov Agam, an artist born in 1928, became interested in the kinetic movement during the early 1950s.

He communicates to the observer through metallic structural features, methods that include sound and light, or fluids such as water, who, as he wanders about, enjoy new dimensions of the artwork by finding its numerous possibilities.

Under the pool, there’s a machinery area the same size as the pool, with two water retention tanks running the length of the chamber.

The first basin collects, filters, and treats the water that falls from the cascade; 16 pumps convey the water to the second basin, which is located directly below the jets & adjacent to the first. The water will flow from this basin.

Final Thoughts on the Best Things to Do in La Defense

For visitors looking for a contemporary, international, and creative side of Paris, La Défense provides a really distinctive and intriguing experience. From its renowned architectural treasures to its thriving cultural scene and delectable gastronomic delights, this region is a must-see.

Whether you enjoy modern art, are a foodie looking for gastronomic pleasures, or simply enjoy beautiful cityscapes, La Défense offers something for everyone.

La Defense Neighbourhood Guide, Paris

Wide boulevards, elegant stone buildings with gun-metal grey roofs and few buildings more than five or six stories tall. This is how we tend to think of Paris. It wasn’t until my third visit to Paris that I saw a different side to the City of Light. La Defense, technically outside the city’s limits, is Paris’ modern business district. Free of height restrictions, skyscrapers grow freely and modern art dots the streets in the form of enormous sculptures. The most enormous of them all is La Grande Arche, built in line with it’s stately (and smaller) counterpart, the Arc de Triomphe.

I have never felt smaller than when I stood under La Grande Arche. It is the masculine, rigid and modern to the Arc de Triomphe’s feminine, elegant and old-worldly frame. Few tourists make it to La Defense, but I enjoyed my time studying in the area. My school, IESEG was promoted as being under the arch. I assumed this was marketing terms for “near the arch, perhaps in its shadow at the right time of day.”

La Defense Guide Paris

No. My school was literally underneath La Grande Arche, with a glass entry smack bang in the middle of the arch’s legs. Our whole school was underground. Also underground is the Les Quatre Temps, the large shopping centre which was like any other I’d find back home. Sometimes, when the school canteen was too busy, I’d grab lunch from a bakery at Les Quatre Temps and eat on the steps of La Grande Arche, the prime position for people watching. I told myself every morning, as I laboured up the steep set of stairs to the arch, that it was balancing out the copious amounts of cheese and wine I was consuming.

Most days, however, I would get a camembert baguette from the canteen. I don’t think I have ever been so happy when eating a sandwich. Fresh salad with a generous serving of goat’s cheese camembert was a fry cry from school canteens I saw in (American) movies. On the first day, we were welcomed with a big buffet, which included tasting plates of different cheese. I was taste testing with gusto until I ate a chunk of butter, which was hiding on the cheese plate.

La Defense ART Paris

From Montparnasse, I spent almost an hour a day catching RER B and then RER A to La Defense, and although I begrudged the hot, crowded journey I was happy to have the best of both worlds: studying international business in the heart of the business district and living in the beautiful grounds of Cite Universitaire in Montparnasse.

It is easy to access from the central Metro station, Cite, on RER A. It’s not the traditional Paris you’ve been dreaming of, but you could spend an hour or so wandering around the area and checking out the sculptures, La Grande Arche, a little museum about La Defense and the amazing water feature.

  • Things to do in La Défense
  • (Re)discover the districts around the Olympic sites

It’s 8 o’clock in the morning. The sun is rising slowly over the district of La Défense and hoards of commuters are already rushing about. And it’s no wonder, considering that this is Europe’s largest business hub and the 4th biggest in the world.

Fortunately, the La Défense district, which straddles 4 municipalities, has much more to offer than just offices. Officially recognised since 2019 as an international tourist attraction, the district stands on a loop of the Seine, just a stone’s throw from Paris. There’s no shortage of superlatives to describe its enormous tower blocks that rub shoulders with Europe’s biggest function venue and the most visited shopping centre in France . Not forgetting the Grande Arche de la Défense , the district’s great iconic arch standing 110 metres tall on the famous historical axis of Paris, perfectly lined up with its ancestor, the Arc de triomphe .

Another key fact: the La Défense district will have the honour of hosting the swimming competitions of the 2024 Olympic & Paralympic Games . Thanks to its modular design, the indoor stadium, Paris La Défense Arena , will be transformed for the occasion into an immense Olympic swimming pool worthy of this world event.

There’s no shortage of reasons to visit this multi-faceted district. Between two Olympic heats, make the most of your time in La Défense to visit its key attractions .

Paris La Défense Arena, at the cutting edge of modernity

So, why not begin your visit at an impressive venue, the Paris La Défense Arena located in the western part of the district, in Nanterre. Built in 2017 under the leadership of Christian de Portzamparc, this building resulted from a colossal project . With capacity for 40,000 spectators, the Paris La Défense Arena boasts the biggest modular auditorium in Europe. Every event hosted in the stadium offers an opportunity to enjoy a total immersion experience, thanks to its technological innovations . For example, the giant interactive screen is the biggest in the world, measuring 1,400 m² (equivalent to seven tennis courts). The promise of an extraordinary sports event for the Olympic & Paralympic swimming competitions!

Bucolic activities in the La Défense district

Longing to see some greenery ? A stone’s throw from the stadium, you’ll find the Parc André Malraux, also in Nanterre. Deemed the green lung of La Défense , this park tucked between the glass tower blocks is the district’s answer to Central Park . Its 25 hectares offer a host of activities, including water games in the heat of summer, a merry-go-round for children, jogging, an afternoon nap by the lake… You may even come across some local employees who prefer working outdoors than enclosed between the partitions of their open-plan offices.

And if you’re looking for something more bucolic, head towards the river Seine to visit the Ferme du bonheur. Located near Paris Nanterre University, this concept venue is a whole world by itself. The Ferme du Bonheur, a kind of vast stretch of countryside set between the towers, is a laboratory of both culture and urban agriculture . During a walk among the vegetable gardens and orchards, you’ll come across free-roaming goats and sheep. There’s no room for boredom here! With festivals, electro music, concerts, agriculture workshops, culinary activities and much more, this merrily undisciplined venue won’t fail to offer a change of scene.

A trip into the past

Let’s go back to the heart of La Défense, beneath the Grande Arche to be precise. Here, in Puteaux, we find the Cité de l’Histoire, a huge interactive museum that you can visit alone or with the family to learn about key events in the history of humankind. Among other family-friendly activities, this is one of the most enjoyable. The tour is divided into three interactive sections that call upon the very latest technology to plunge you into a totally immersive time-travel experience. Relive the glory days of General de Gaulle through authentic reconstitutions , delve into the daily life of Victor Hugo with a 360° show, follow an enormous timeline to learn about key dates in French history… And the highlight is a unique tour inside Notre-Dame de Paris, through an amazing 45-minute interactive voyage. And if this adventure gives you an appetite, take this opportunity to stop off at the museum restaurant .

Time for a shopping spree in La Défense

Just a 2-minute walk from the Grande Arche you’ll find Europe’s biggest shopping centre which is also the most visited in France: Westfield Les 4 Temps. In this window-shopping temple of 130,000 m² and 230 shops, you’ll find everything you could possibly need… And even what you don’t! And because shopping makes you hungry, pop up to the 3rd floor for a quick snack and, while you’re there, treat yourself to a film at the cinema!

Works of art between the tower blocks of La Défense

Your walk continues along the esplanade de La Défense, still in Puteaux. This gateway to the district of La Défense, with its shimmering glass buildings and contemporary art installations dotted along the promenade, is like an open-air museum . If you’re into architecture or modern art, this walk is a feast for the eyes, providing a fabulous glimpse of the beautiful treasures this district has to offer.

Among the exhibited works you can admire two of Joan Miró ’s fantastical characters Westfield Les Quatre Temps , the gigantic Public Bench by Lilian Bourgeat , and the Takis Pond at the esplanade entrance. Stop for a moment at the edge of this work of art to admire the façades of the buildings reflected on the water’s surface.

Round off your evening in La Défense

As commuters leave the district of La Défense, stay a few more hours to dine at the Miroir , an exquisite restaurant on the 1st floor of the Melia hotel, in Courbevoie. Behind the enormous picture windows flooded in daylight , you’ll have the pleasure of gazing out at the Takis Pond as you savour the delicious Mediterranean cuisine .

And what better way to end your adventure among the skyscrapers than sipping at a cocktail with your head in the clouds ? Head for the 19th floor of this hotel to visit the Skyline Paris Lounge & Bar. Admire the exceptional elegant setting and a view over Paris and the Seine that will take your breath away. The perfect way to round off your high-flying evening.

A Guide to the Best Things to do in La Défense

La Défense is located just a short métro ride away from central Paris and yet feels a world apart. Here’s your guide to the best things to do in La Défense , as well as what to know before you go.

When you picture Paris in your mind, you’re probably imagining wide café lined boulevards and Haussmannian architecture. But what you might not realise is that, just outside of Paris, there’s an entire area filled with towering skyscrapers and breathtakingly modern architecture.

The area is named for a statue that is called ‘La Défense de Paris’ and that commemorates the French soldiers who fought in the Franco-Prussian War. Though it’s not as popular as some other places in the Île de France area, La Défense still boasts millions of annual visitors.

A Guide to the Best Things to do in La Défense

Where is La Défense?

Go shopping, see the skyscrapers, visit the la defense christmas market, la grande arche, see contemporary art, see la défense de paris, see cherry blossoms.

La Défense is located to the North West of Paris and is the largest business district in Europe (covering a staggering area of 560 hectares). The area is not located within Paris proper (i.e. within the Periphérique) but instead in the department of Hauts de Seine (the 92).

The area can be reached by public transportation by either taking the métro line 1 (which costs the price of a normal métro ticket) or alternatively by taking the RER A (though be aware that this ticket will cost more).

Best things to do in La Défense

One of the biggest draws of La Défense for those who love a bit of retail therapy is that there are multiple shopping malls stacked around one another, and centred around the Grande Arche that characterises the entire area.

The shops located in this area are your typical high street ones (there are also fast food chains) and there are very few independent boutiques. The main shopping centres at La Défense are Westfield les 4 Temps and CNIT, with the Westfield being the larger and more popular of the two.

shopping in la defense

As I mentioned earlier, the area is particularly well-known for its high-rises and skyscrapers. Indeed, many of the tallest skyscrapers in France are located within this area. In total, there are 19 completed skyscrapers in the area.

The oldest skyscraper in the area is Tour Initiale  (which means ‘First Tower’) and was completed in 1966. Some of the tallest buildings in La Défense include Tour Majunga (194 m), Tour Areva (178 m), and Tour Total (179 m).

One of the biggest and best Christmas markets in the Île de France region is actually held at La Défense each year. The La Défense Christmas Market event boasts some 350 wooden chalets and is free to visit.

Head to the market during opening times and you can expect to find a wide array of artisanal goods, plenty of vin chaud  (including ‘artisanal vin chaud’ and ‘Cuban vin Chaud’ as well as white wine vin chaud) , and lots of delcious savoury and sweet eats. Worth noting is that prices are significantly less at La Défense than at Jardin des Tuileries.

While there are five historic arches within Paris itself, there is also another a new and modern big arch at La Défense which is officially known as ‘La Grande Arche de la Fraternité’. The arch also boasts a rooftop terrace and exhibition space with ever-changing artists on display. Purchase your Grande Arche Ticket here in advance.

Presiding over the centre of the district, the arch stands at an impressive 360 foot high and was built between 1985 and 1989. The arch was inaugurated on the 14th July 1989, two hundred years since the French Revolution.

Now, the arch houses offices. The arch is located on the same axis as the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel and the Arc de Triomphe (the most famous of the Paris arches) and the distance between the Grande Arche and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel is 10 km.

La Grande Arche

Over the decades, there has been an ever-growing number of outdoor art works scattered across the district. Today, there are over 60 contemporary works of art around La Défense. If you’re looking for a great free activity near Paris, then following in the trail of the outdoor artwork is a great way to spend a few hours.

Some of the most memorable works of art include sculptures and installations by Miró, Baldaccini, and Calder. While some of the works of art are easy to find, others are hidden behind buildings and in some particularly unique places. For more inspiration, check out the complete guide to artwork in La Défense .

See contemporary art la defense

As well as plenty of modern art installations, the statue after which the whole district is named, La Défense de Paris, can also be seen in the area. The bronze statue replaced a statue of Napoleon I and was installed in 1883 in front of a crowd of around 100,000 people.

When it comes to thinking about cherry blossoms in Paris , the ultra-modern district is probably not the first place that springs to mind! However, it is well worth a wander around in blossom season, especially so in Place de L’Iris where you’ll spot plenty of spring flowers worth snapping a photo of.

The Historical Axis of Paris

Historical Axis of Paris

If you were a crow (or, these days, a drone) you could fly along the 10-kilometre-long Historical Axis of Paris, an imaginary straight line that starts at the Louvre, runs through the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel , continues along the Champs-Elysées, dashes through the Arc de Triomphe , to continue all the way out to the center of La Grande Arche at La Défense . And here are seven surprising reasons to make that trip.

Discover What's On When You're Here...

Discover what's on when you're here, 1. la grande arche de la défense.

La Grande Arche

Succeeding French presidents toyed with the idea of creating a visual landmark to extend the Paris Axe Historique , but it was François Mitterrand who finally launched a design competition to make this idea come to fruition. In 1983, Danish architect Johann Otto von Spreckelsen was selected to create a landmark — a modern interpretation of the Arc de Triomphe . (Von Spreckelsen's Grande Arche is twice the size of the Arc de Triomphe. Notre Dame Cathedral would easily fit inside of it!)

Instead of honoring military victories, the monumental arch is dedicated to humanitarian ideals. L'Arche , built in the shape of cube, is made of concrete and covered with glass and Carrara marble. The 110-metre-cubed structure was inaugurated in 1989 as part of the bicentennial of the French Revolution. The rooftop, closed for several years, has recently reopened with a breathtaking panoramic view, an exhibition area, and a restaurant.

2. La Défense Outdoor Art Collection

Outdoor Art Collection

There's an outdoor art collection scattered around La Défense that includes works by Calder, Miro, and other world-famous artists. César Baldaccini is represented by his iconic sculpture of a 40-foot thumb. in total there are seventy pieces of contemporary artworks sprinkled throughout the district. The concept was an ambitious project initiated in 1958, just when the modernization of the area began. Some of the works are found on the main place of La Défense , others are hidden between skyscrapers.

3. l'araignée rouge – the red spider.

Outdoor Art Collection

American artist Alexandre Calder's (1898 to 1976) 50-foot sculpture was commissioned in 1974 to give the main esplanade of La Défense a more human-scale feel. An engineer by training, Calder built L'Araignée Rouge based on six vertical panels that were welded in a factory and assembled on site, using special bolts designed by the artist himself. Alexander Calder's love affair with France began with his arrival in Paris in 1926 and continued until his death in 1976.

4. Green Spaces

Place de l'Iris

In a district that includes almost a hundred skyscrapers, green spaces don't exactly spring to mind. However, there are a bevy of parks, places , and green spaces that dot the landscape of Europe's most expansive business area.

Cours Gambetta features a small body of water, trees, and grass. In spring, Japanese cherry trees blossom in Place de l'Iris . Parc Diderot covers 2½ acres with a garden set around a large waterfall and a collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, and boxwoods cut into squares and other shapes.

There's even a vineyard! Centuries ago, La Défense was home to some famous vineyards, close to the forest of Saint-Germain. Today, what remains is Clos de Chantecoq . In 2007, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes were replanted on ten acres at La Défense .

5. tour initiale.

Tour Initiale

The oldest office tower at La Défense , Tour Initiale (that means, like, "First Tower"), stands at 109 metres high and was completed in 1966. Its simple linear form reflects the restrictions placed on the design of buildings La Défense at the time. You can see the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright's Johnson Wax Headquarters in Wisconsin with its rounded corners. Engineer Jean Prouvé created the unique glass curtain wall. At the time, the curved glass corners could only be made in the USA, whence they were shipped to Paris.

6. Coeur Défense

Coeur Défense

Completed in 2001, this 161-metre-high skyscraper reflects the loosening of restrictions on form and height by the end of the 20th century. ( Coeur Défense is not the tallest building at La Défense . That title belongs to Tour First at a soaring 231 metres, first built in 1974, with extra height added in 2011.) The Coeur Défense's two towers are connected with an undulating form that breaks up the mass of the building, making it appear more slender.

7. la défense de paris – the sculpture.

La Défense de Paris

In 1878, a competition was held to create a sculpture to commemorate those who participated in the defense of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Hundreds of proposals were presented by the most famous sculptors of the time, including Rodin. Instead, the jury chose Louis-Ernest Barrias. For Barrias, this marked the beginning of a successful career.

( This was the same period when the French National Assembly voted to turn over the most visible land in Paris to the Catholic Church to build a church in order to "expiate the crimes of The Paris Commune ", a citizens uprising that took over Paris in 1871 just after the Prussians left. The result was the still-controversial — and some say eyesore — Sacre-Coeur on the Montmartre hill.)

La Défense de Paris is a monumental sculpturein which the city of Paris is depicted as a woman dressed in the National Guard uniform, standing proudly. A young girl at her feet represents the suffering of civilians during the siege while an injured soldier beside her tries to load his rifle. He represents the resistance of the people of Paris.

The bronze sculpture was originally placed in the middle of a busy, six-lane traffic circle. But in 1983 it was decided to move the sculpture to La Défense . Today, this piece of 19th-century art is situated on the esplanade, amidst all that modern art, and maintains an important place at the center of the district.

Experience the Splendor Of Versailles

La défense history 101.

La Defense

In that infamous period of urban planning known as The Sixties (the 1960s, to be clear) proposals were made for skyscrapers to be built throughout Paris, with the intention of "echoing the beauty of the Eiffel Tower". However, in 1972 when the tall, controversial, and massive 210-metre-high Tour Montparnasse was completed, there was a public outcry.

Further construction of skyscrapers within the Paris city limits was halted. So, city planners looked westward, just two miles outside of Paris, to plan their future skyscraper city. Initially, buildings were restricted to rectangular 30-floor-high structures, but over time, these restrictions were loosened. Today, there are 72 glass and steel buildings, with 180,000 daily workers, and 3,500,000 square metres (38,000,000 square feet) of office space.

Why La Defense should be on your Paris visit itinerary

View of Paris business district La Defence at dusk, tall towers galore

Any number of guides will claim to confidentially reveal to you some ‘secret’ parts of Paris – and, sure enough, these places are often charming little nooks. But when you arrive, you may well find that these secrets have likewise been revealed to thousands of other curious people. Hmm, so much for the conspiratorial secrets.

A new perspective on secret Paris

But there really is a substantial part of Paris that is a different kind of ‘secret’ hiding in plain sight. You just need to know where to look and then you can’t miss it – even from several kilometres away. The name of this little-known part of Paris is La Défense. Well, it’s little known to tourists, but very well known to the thousands of French workers who throng the district every day. So, what is this place?

Standing just outside and to the west of the historical centre of Paris, La Défense is actually Europe’s largest built-for-purpose and ultra-modern business district. Its architectural profile is very ‘un-Parisian’ in that it features more than 70 steel and glass towers, including around 20 genuine skyscrapers. And there’s not a classic ‘Haussmann Paris’ low-rise stone building to be found. Sounds pretty boring, huh? No, not at all!

The chef d’oeuvre of La Défense is a massive and magnificent modernist monument completed in 1989 called La Grande Arche de la Défense. Just how grand is it? This arch – well, it’s really more of a hollowed-out cube – stands at 110 metres or 360 feet. Yes, it’s the height of a 36-storey building. In fact, it is a pair of 36-storey office buildings, utilizing both sides of the cubed arch and joined at right angles across the top.

Arch rivals

If you have urged your weary legs all the way to the top of the Arc de Triomphe, you would have stood at an impressive height of 50 metres or 164 feet. But to keep a sense of scale, that’s less than half the height of La Grande Arche de la Défense. If you had turned your gaze west from the top of the Arc de Triomphe, what would you have seen very clearly 4 kilometres away? Yes, La Grande Arche la Défense. But being an odd kind of modern Paris ‘secret’, you wouldn’t look out for it without knowing it was around somewhere. But there it is!

As you might notice, the older Arc de Triomphe and the newer La Grande Arche do share a certain family resemblance. It’s not accidental. The newer structure was conceived to be a stylistic update and reflection of the older structure: they literally face each other from either end of the Avenue de la Grande Armée. And as the older was constructed to commemorate France’s military victories and sacrifices, the newer was built to celebrate the enduring humanitarian values of the French people and nation. The top of La Grande Arche de la Défense also provides visitors with an astonishingly elevated view of historic Paris – yes, even better than the outlook from the Arc de Triomphe.

Authentic – but different Paris

For tourists, La Défense is not the obviously seductive Paris of Amelie or of a thousand other Paris-based romantic movies. On the other hand, the 1,400-acre district does host many hundreds of modern shops, cafes and restaurants that cater very largely for the 25,000 local French residents and 180,000 commuting workers. So if you’re seeking an ‘authentic’ but different kind of Parisian experience where you can mix with French people going about their everyday business and pleasures, La Défense is the place you can do it. Now that is a secret worth knowing. And just between us, of course.

Readout of Under Secretary of Defense Dr. William LaPlante's Visit to Paris, France and Brussels, Belgium

Department of Defense Spokesperson Jeff Jurgensen provided the following readout:

Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Dr. William LaPlante traveled to Paris, France and Brussels, Belgium April 15-19, 2024, to strengthen security cooperation with European allies and partners on both immediate requirements and opportunities for greater procurement, production, and sustainment collaboration in the future.

During the semi-annual NATO Conference of National Armaments Directors (NADs), Dr. LaPlante discussed progress on implementation of NATO's Defense Production Action Plan (DPAP), multinational procurement initiatives, and programmatic oversight.

Allied leaders agreed to the DPAP at the 2023 Vilnius Summit to accelerate joint procurement, address defense industrial challenges, and increase interoperability and interchangeability between allies. These efforts are guided by the NATO Defense Industrial Production Board, which met for the second time in Brussels the week prior and remains focused on increasing industrial capacity, strengthening supply chain security, and driving standardization across capabilities.

Dr. LaPlante also commended progress on increasing co-development and co-production efforts, such as production of Patriot Guidance Enhanced Missiles-Tactical (GEM-T) in Germany. Earlier this year, NATO Support and Procurement Agency awarded a $5.6 billion contract to support the procurement of up to 1,000 GEM-T missiles by multiple European nations. This multinational bundling of procurement enables economies of scale to expand production capacity, meet rising demand, and enhance security of supply.

On April 19, Dr. LaPlante co-chaired the 11th meeting of NADs under the auspices of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) alongside his Ukrainian counterpart, Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk. During the meeting, Dr. LaPlante emphasized the critical role NADs play in executing ministerial guidance through procurement, production, and sustainment while reaffirming the United States' steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine. Nearly 50 nations and multinational agencies participated.

Throughout the trip, Dr. LaPlante also conducted bilateral engagements with the U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO, Acting NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Investment, and NADs from Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
