Plantronics Voyager Pro HD Bluetooth headset review
We’ve talked before that Bluetooth headsets, while once simply trendy, are now pretty much a necessity to those who drive to and from work. Actually, in many states, if you simply drive, you need a headset.
Bluetooth technology is getting better and Bluetooth headsets are getting “smarter.” As I will cover in more detail, the Plantronics Voyager Pro HD actually knows whether or not you have the headset on. With their proprietary software for Android phones, you can also check your email, check the weather – even post a status update to Facebook.

What’s in the box
The Plantronics Voyager Pro HD comes well equipped. There is the standard charger and an additional USB cable (updates to the headset are handled via a USB connection to a Mac or PC.)
Also included are two additional earpieces with accompanying soft covers. Documentation (a rarity these days) is included as well.
Pairing the Voyager Pro HD
When you first turn on the Voyager Pro HD, it will automatically go into Pairing mode. The LED should flash and alternate between red and blue to indicate that you are in Pairing mode.
For future pairings, just press and hold the Power button for a few seconds to make the LED’s flash and put the headset into Pairing mode.

Get the latest news from Android Central, your trusted companion in the world of Android
On your HTC EVO 4G LTE or HTC One X or other Android device, just:
- Go to your Bluetooth settings
- Choose Scan for devices
- Select the Plantronics Voyager Pro HD from available device
- If you are asked for a passcode – just input 0000.
NOTE: There is a Plantronics My Headset app that you can download that adds specific functionality to Android devices. Search for it in the Google Play store. If you download the app, you can pair your device from the app as opposed to the Settings app detailed above. The My Headset app also displays an on screen battery meter and has voice recorder functionality.
Functionality
The Plantronics Voyager Pro HD uses what they call Smart Sensor Technology. That means, that somehow, this little headset knows when it is on your ear and when it is on the table or dashboard. If it is not on your ear, it doesn’t answer the call – plain and simple and it works! If a call comes in, just put on the headset and without pressing a single button, calls will transfer right to the headset. When the headset is off your ear, it is “locked out” from taking calls – so you don’t lose your calls.
If you wear it on your ear all the time in the car, just tap the call button to take a call. To end a call, just tap the call button again.
If you are on a call on your phone and want to transfer it to your Voyager Pro HD, just hold the call button for about a second or two.
If you want to reject a call that is coming through, just hold the call button for a couple of seconds while it is ringing.
Holding the call button for a second when not on a call should activate voice dialing on your Android phone.
Double tap the call button to redial the last call
Vocalist voice and text service
The Plantronics Voyager Pro HD comes with one year of free service to the Plantronics Vocalyst text and voice service. When you get the device, you go to www.Plantronics.com/myheadset and then click on the Activate Vocalyst button. Plantronics gives you an activation code you plug in to start your service.
Essentially, with the Vocalyst service (and the free Vocalyst app for Android) you can:
- Record and listen to reminders
- Send emails and have them read to you
- Hear updated news and weather reports
- Update your Facebook status
Once you establish your account you can customize it and add other text apps to your Vocalyst service. It should be noted that Vocalyst wants you to upgrade to the Pro service for $3.50 a month or $35.00 a year.
You can also connect two phones to the Voyager Pro HD using Multipoint technology and simply answer whichever one is ringing.
Comfort
The Plantronics Voyager Pro HD is a big headset. I’m guessing that the battery and the Smart Sensor are housed in the section of the headset that sits behind the ear. The headset is heavier than others like the Blueant Q2 and Jawbone Era.
The headset was comfortable in my ear with the included ear tip ant there are additional sizes for varying sized ear canals. The Plantronics Voyager Pro HD also has a boom type microphone that swivels. This took some getting used to, but I am convinced that it certainly contributes to the clear quality of my voice (according to those I spoke with.) One issue I had (and I had with many headsets) was that the back of the device that goes behind the ear can get stuck or in the way if you wear glasses.
Call quality
Call quality was excellent with the Plantronics Voyager Pro HD. Plantronics uses what they call Windsmart technology to block out wind and extraneous noise. Like other noise cancelation technology I have used, this is effective but it does alter the sound of the voice just a bit.
The sound was mainly loud and clear. Volume can be adjusted via the volume buttons on the top of the device.
NOTE: The Plantronics Voyager Pro HD support A2DP audio streaming meaning that when the headset is connected, you can stream your music from your Android phone right to the headset. Sound quality was very good and you can use the volume up and down buttons simultaneously to pause or play music.
The wrap up
The Plantronics Voyager Pro HD is an excellent headset. Sound quality is great, battery life seems very good and the boom mike means that your voice is picked up well and you are heard well on the other end of the call.
With the separate Android app installed, you can even have the headset read your email messages, check news or weather and more.
This is a big headset – that means you most likely won’t lose it – but it may not be as comfortable as other in the ear headsets.
- Good sound quality for music and podcasts
- Good functionality
- Easy to pair and use
- Great call quality
- Added Android app is a plus
- A bit on the heavy side
- Not as comfortable as smaller in the ear headsets
The verdict
There are many factors that make a Bluetooth headset the right headset for you. The Plantronics Voyager Pro HD is easy to set up and use, it offers good functionality, it has good batter life and it stays in place. Add in the Android app for pairing and checking the battery life and the Vocalyst service and this becomes a feature-rich headset. I would suggest trying the on first (if possible) to make sure that it will be comfortable for you.

Plantronics Voyager PRO HD Review
Plantronics Voyager PRO HD Review – You may have already guessed from the product name that this is a better version of the previous Plantronics Voyager PRO/PRO UC . Though the design is pretty much similar, the Voyager PRO HD sounds much better and features a Smart Sensor™ technology in which I’ll explain in a little bit more detailed later.
With an exceptional audio quality and the Smart Sensor™, Plantronics Voyager PRO HD is one of the best Bluetooth headsets I have reviewed, assuming you are okay with the microphone boom design (personal preference).
Plantronics Voyager PRO HD Review – Packaging
The packaging comes with:
- Plantronics Voyager PRO HD headset
- Different ear gels of different sizes (your pick)
- Power adapter
- User guides, etc
Plantronics Voyager PRO HD Review – Design
The design of the headset is still quite stylish, despite of the microphone boom, which actually improves the quality of your voice quite significantly compared to the ones without. It’s coated mainly in black and pretty sturdy.
You are meant to tuck it around your ear with the help of an ear-hook design (which has all the chips, battery and everything inside). It’s quite easy to hook it up so you don’t waste your time trying to fiddle with it during an incoming call.
Unlike the Plantronics BackBeat 903+ , the recharging port remains exposed so you can plug the cable in quickly.
I found that within a few hours, the headset was already fully recharged from an empty state – which is amazing. This means that when the battery is low and you have an hour or two of say, lunch break, you can quickly plug it in to recharge to get a quick “fix”. You can either press the power button or look at the headset’s battery meter indicator on your iPhone (or Android smartphones) to find out how many hours you have left before you need to recharge the headset.
The microphone boom can be pushed all the way up or down and there are also up and down volume controls, rather than a single button on most other compact Plantronics Bluetooth headsets.
Plantronics Voyager PRO HD Review – Experience
What I like most about the Voyager PRO HD is the Smart Sensor™ technology. I don’t wear a Bluetooth headset on my ear all day long so normally I place it on my desk when I’m not on call. Therefore, it can be a bit tedious when a call comes in and I have to set the headset up as quickly as I can (turning it on, placing it on my ear, and pressing the answer button). With the Smart Sensor™ technology, Plantronics Voyager PRO HD automatically goes to standby mode when I take it off my ear and wakes up + answers the call automatically when I place it on my ear.
Another great thing about this technology is that often I thought that I was going to make a quick call so I couldn’t be bothered using a Bluetooth headset. However, sometimes a call took longer than I expected. Normally, it would take a few steps to transfer the call to my headset. With Voyager PRO HD’s Smart Sensor™ technology, I quickly grabbed the headset and hook it to my ear. It automatically transferred the call to the headset pretty quickly and the caller didn’t even notice a thing. Love it!
I find that the quality of the call is excellent and it also has noise cancelling technology (including from the wind). I honestly haven’t tried the Wind Protection yet so I’m not sure how good it performs when you are driving a car with the windows opened, for example.
The microphone boom design helps in delivering clear audio quality to the other end of the call.
The voice activation (done by pressing and holding the main button for a couple of seconds) also works well and I’m happy to announce that the Plantronics Voyager PRO HD works with iPhone 4S Siri (unlike the Plantronics MARQUE M155 that I reviewed last week).
Plantronics Voyager PRO HD Review – Conclusion
Plantronics Voyager PRO HD
Plantronics Voyager PRO HD is a masterpiece, if you are okay with the less-sexy design (due to the microphone boom) compared to the other Plantronics Bluetooth headset models.
The headset is designed to fit around your ear comfortably and securely – allowing you to talk for hours over the phone. Once I talked for more than an hour non-stop with the Voyager PRO HD and I didn’t experience any discomfort at all.
The sound quality is also excellent (definitely deserves the “HD” tag) for both calls and music (I honestly haven’t heard music being played this good through a compact Bluetooth headset since the Backbeat 903+).
The Smart Sensor™ technology is also the clear winner here. Wear the headset and it instantly answers your incoming call. Take it off and it pauses your music. If I’m not mistaken (correct me if I’m wrong), this is the first time I’ve ever seen this on a Bluetooth headset.
Excellent quality, excellent design, excellent technology. Well done, Plantronics!

Plantronics Voyager PRO Wireless Headset review: Plantronics Voyager PRO Wireless Headset
Plantronics voyager pro wireless headset.
A decade after its first Bluetooth headset in 2001, Plantronics still stands out as one of the leaders in an increasingly crowded field. The Voyager line of headsets is especially popular with consumers who prize audio quality and comfort above all else. We were glad to see Plantronics update its lineup with the Voyager Pro Plus last year, which added A2DP streaming, voice alerts, and even better noise reduction.
The Bottom Line
But the innovation didn't stop there. Plantronics has introduced yet another improvement on its Voyager Pro line with the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC. Undeniably the company's most advanced headset yet, the Voyager Pro UC uses new sensor technology that can detect whether it is on or off the ear. This increases the headset's functionality tenfold--the ability to answer a call just by putting on the headset, for example, is fantastic. The Voyager Pro UC also works with a variety of softphone and VoIP PC applications without ever losing mobile connectivity.
Even though the design of the headset is the same and the audio quality is unchanged, we think this new technology is highly impressive. Just because of that, we're elevating the headset to Editors' Choice. We just wish it were cheaper; it retails for $199.95, which is nearly double the price of competing headsets.
Design It's design deja vu all over again with the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC. Indeed, it looks identical to both the Voyager Pro Plus and the Voyager Pro. It has that retro telemarketer look, with a large behind-the-ear battery pack and a long swiveling boom microphone. We're admittedly a little tired of the design by now, but we can't blame the company for sticking to a design that many people have come to love. Despite its looks, the Voyager Pro UC is definitely comfortable and easy to wear. For more details on button placement and overall look and feel, we'll direct you to our review of the Plantronics Voyager Pro .
Unlike the Jawbone Era , which has a built-in accelerometer to help answer and end calls, the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC uses very sensitive capacitive touch technology instead. According to Plantronics, this works by "sensing capacitance changes due to conductors brought close to one or more sensor electrodes." This Smart Sensor technology enables the headset to differentiate one action from another.
The benefits of the sensor are quite impressive. For example, if a call comes in and you're not wearing your headset, the call automatically routes to the phone. You can then answer the call as you would normally or you can slip on your headset and the call will be answered automatically. If you put on your headset in the middle of the call, the call will be transferred to the headset automatically as well. This prevents you from having to fumble around for the headset whenever you get an incoming call.
This works great for listening to music as well. Taking the headset off automatically pauses the song, and when you put the headset back on, the song resumes where it left off. You also no longer have to worry about accidentally placing a call while the headset is bouncing around in your pocket; the Voyager Pro UC has Auto Call Button Lock, which locks the button when the headset is not worn.
Features Like the Voyager Pro Plus, the Voyager Pro UC has voice alerts, multipoint technology for simultaneous connectivity to two devices, and A2DP streaming so you can listen to music, podcasts, and apps like turn-by-turn navigation. You also get a visual headset battery meter when the headset is paired with an iPhone. The Voyager Pro UC currently does not support Plantronics' Vocalyst automated phone service, but it might in the future.
The Voyager Pro UC comes with a USB adapter that is by default paired with the headset. You can plug the adapter into a PC or Mac and use the headset with a variety of softphone and VoIP applications that include options from Avaya, Cisco, IBM, Microsoft (OCS & Lync), ShoreTel, and Skype. The Voyager Pro UC is able to make use of the simultaneous connectivity of the phone and the PC. For example, if you're on a mobile call, the headset will communicate to the PC software and change your availability status to "On a call." Once you're done, the software will change it back to normal availability.
If you use Outlook, you can create a list of VIPs or favorite contacts that you communicate with frequently. You can set it up so that whenever you get an instant message or e-mail from one of these people, the headset will alert you, and then read out the subject line of the e-mail. In VoIP apps like Skype, you can also quickly switch from IM conversations to voice chat simply by putting on the headset.
Performance As the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC has much the same noise-canceling technology as the Voyager Pro Plus, we're not surprised that the quality is equally as good. We paired the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC with the Apple iPhone 4 , and quality was very impressive. Incoming voice quality was crisp, clear, and as natural-sounding as holding up the phone directly to the ear.
Callers reported similar results. They did report the occasional muddiness, but it wasn't a deal breaker. Calls were free of static and noise, and wind noise was reduced as well. Callers said our voice quality was clear and natural for the most part, even when we were in a noisy environment.
We're quite impressed by the audio quality of music as well. Sure, it's not a stereo listening experience, but songs had passable sound quality.
The Plantronics Voyager Pro UC has a rated battery life of 6 hours of talk time and five days of standby time.

Plantronics Voyager PRO Bluetooth headset review
You wait for a new high-end Bluetooth headset and along come two at the same time. If Aliph's Jawbone PRIME is the jewelry-like fashion model, the Plantronics Voyager PRO is the suited business version. We've already seen the Jawbone PRIME live up to its tech-packed spec-sheet; Plantronics promise just as much noise-processing magic from the Voyager PRO . I've been testing it out on the busy streets of Rome.
Unless you're a telemarketer, you're unlikely to think the Plantronics Voyager PRO discrete. While rivals like Aliph's Jawbone PRIME have aimed for compact and jewel-like with their design, Plantronics have definitely put function over form. Behind the ear sits a large battery, linked via a flexible rubber arm to a protruding boom arm; since it's your outer-ear that holds the Voyager Pro in place, the earbuds are picked for their comfort rather than their tenacious grip. Plantronics bundle two different sized ear-gels together with some more traditional foam earbuds.
Hardware controls are minimal, basically comprising a large multifunction power/pairing/call-answer/call-end key and a small volume rocker. A status LED lives above the main button, putting it right behind your ear; I'm not a fan of blinking LEDs on headsets to begin with, but this seems a particularly out-of-the-way place to site it. Because of its positioning, the multifunction key requires a firm grip on the headset; I had mixed results stabbing it with a single finger. A microUSB connector serves to recharge the battery.
Surprisingly, despite its bulk, the Voyager PRO proved comfortable to wear. Tipping the scales at 0.6oz, but spreading that weight across the whole ear, you could realistically sport the Plantronics all day without tiring of it. While the flexible arm is intended to make glasses and sunglasses-wearers comfortable, we still prefer an earhook-free headset. I found the rubber arch to be too bulky to hug the ear enough so as not to rub or nudge glasses; of course, those with bigger ears will probably appreciate how accommodating it is.
I paired the Voyager PRO with a number of test handsets, and experienced roughly 20-25 feet of usable range; that of course is cut down significantly if you put your phone into a pocket or purse. Meanwhile runtime – estimated at up to 6hrs talktime or up to five days standby – proved just as impressive as the sizable battery might suggest. I managed full, busy days of use with several hours worth of calls without ever hearing the battery warning tone; even if I had, Plantronics claim it takes just 90 minutes to rejuice from the supplied AC power supply.
For those six hours you'll get amazing sound quality. The upside to a lengthy boom microphone is improved speech pickup, and to that Plantronics have added their AudioIQ2 technology together with noise-cancellation systems. Together, they add up to highly impressive voice isolation, both for the wearer and whomever they're talking to. Walking around noisy, windy, crowded streets of Rome, callers couldn't perceive any difference to when I'd spoken to them from our flat. Unlike some noise-cancellation tech I've tried in Bluetooth headsets, the Voyager PRO works its magic without simultaneously mangling, compressing or robotizing your voice.
Whether it performs better than the Jawbone PRIME is a difficult question. My back to back testing suggested that, in everyday situations, callers couldn't tell the difference between the PRIME and the Voyager PRO. I felt the Jawbone deals with direct wind-noise a little better than the Plantronics, while the Voyager Pro has the edge on natural voice clarity. Its processing produces a louder, more defined sound, versus the PRIME's smoother tone. For most people in most environments, though, we don't think there's much to differentiate the technology.
Update: Vincent has just called me from a crowded bus in Rome, whispering "like a tiny mouse", and there was no perceivable difference in his voice, nor identifiable background noise. The only thing different was that he didn't sound as hyperactive as usual – quite a pleasant change! There's a photo of the bus environment in the gallery below; the Voyager PRO may not tick the aesthetic boxes, but the audio quality can't be understated. Chris Davies
Plantronics told me that Voyager PRO is targeted to a specific market: hardcore business users. The gamble is that those users are willing to sacrifice style for comfort and, to some extent, performance. The Voyager PRO certainly offers superlative audio quality and – for non-glasses wearers at least – it's comfortable enough to wear for long periods, but like I'm simply not convinced it offers enough over the Jawbone PRIME to balance its obtrusiveness. The price tag of $100 is a lot of money and while the Jawbone PRIME costs $29 more, I reckon there's more flexibility with it; I have a feeling most consumers will feel the same way.
