Welcome to Ghosts of Providence

The deadly legacies of providence’s most infamous people and most haunted locations.

What once began as a place of “Hope”, the motto for the state of Rhode Island, the Providence Plantations that were founded as an escape from religious persecution from the Massachusetts Bay Colony eventually transformed into a magnet for otherworldly visitors, unbelievable hauntings, and countless accounts of unexplained activity.  So intense was this ominous pull that it also attracted some of the world’s most notorious writers, destined for fame due to their obsession with the morbid and the macabre…and doomed to torment by their fascination with all things horror.

Dive into this disturbingly sinister side of Providence’s history, and find out why former residents such as Edgar Allen Poe, Bram Stoker, and H.P. Lovecraft found inspiration for their grisly tales in the city’s tormented streets. Journey deep into the dark streets of the colonial city and if you can observe the ghosts of departed Revolutionary War era soldiers at Brown College’s University Hall, and come face-to-face with the terrifying hauntings that Providence locals have reported for hundreds of years.

What will I see?

The dark side of a colonial city with a forsaken history and a terrifying future.

Providence is home to several haunted sites that provide a nail-biting look into the city’s gruesome history, such as the Dexter House at the Rhode Island School of Art and Design. Before it was used as a dormitory, the building once acted as a morgue in the 1700s…leading to frequent reports of ominous encounters with the phantoms of long-dead corpses.

Today, students struggle to explain the menacing, spine-tingling energy that can be felt around the home’s many halls…perhaps, due to the lost souls that continue to haunt the building centuries after meeting their grim fate in the morgue. Residents talk of hearing chilling, disembodied whispers, or even, in some cases, have reported feeling the edges of their beds sink…as if someone was sitting just at their feet in the dead of night, watching them in silence.

Discover the unsettling truths of one of America’s oldest cities, teeming with a horrific history and past so disturbing, it’s attracted the restless spirits of the dead for centuries.

Tragic Suicides, Fatal Accidents, and Unexplained Mysteries

Beneath the streets of Providence lies a gruesome web of deaths, horrific accidents, and dark truths, all thanks to the city’s violent and tragic history. Unveil the very real hauntings that occur around the city to this day on a night-time trek with Providence Ghosts, and uncover the chilling enigmas behind strange cases such as the deadly construction of the City Hall, in which a dozen workers horrifically lost their lives building the ornate, five-story building.

Hear the grim details of the sordid suicide that occured at Providence’s Fleur de lys Studio, in which artist Angela O’Leary took her own life by gas poisoning in the early 1900s. Today, her ghastly apparition can still be seen lurking around the building…with the young woman’s ghost having allegedly left handprints in the sawdust during renovations in recent years. Tragedy is stitched into the fabric of Rhode Island’s capital city, making it an especially active location for countless, bone-chilling hauntings that continue to wreak havoc years after the first whispers and reports of unexplained phenomena.

Uncover Providence’s Tortured Past and Tormented Present

Travel back in time on a Providence ghost tour and hear the sinful details of this historic city’s strong links with darkness, including the countless, tragic murders, grisly suicides, and inexplicable mysteries…all of which have left a gruesome stain on Providence’s legacy. Stop by the infamous Turk’s Head Building, which has long been rumored to be the gathering site of a mysterious secret society. With Satanism, underground organizations, and chilling legends of other strange, horrific creatures all being a part of Providence’s deadly past, it’s no surprise that the city is riddled with ghost stories that are sure to haunt you during your trip to Rhode Island…and continue long after you’ve returned home.

* This is a walking tour and we do not enter privately-owned buildings or private property *

Preview The Most Haunted Locations In Providence

H.p. lovecraft's "the shunned" house.

The haunting of the infamous, abandoned home used in H.P. Lovecraft’s horror novelette “The Shunned House” might be the stuff of fiction…but many speculate that the building’s otherworldly residents are, in fact, very real. Immerse yourself in the nail-biting world of Lovecraft by getting up close and personal with this notoriously haunted residence, which dates back to the late 1700s. “The Shunned House” tells a terrifying tale of ghosts, vampires, and mysterious deaths — some of which still linger around the property to this day. Learn about this hellish, haunted house, and unveil the dark truths of its previous residents, some of which are said to have been the distant relatives of a real-life werewolf.

Providence Athenaeum

The Providence Athenaeum Library was a favorite spot of legendary horror writers H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe…who are rumored to still frequent the haunted building from beyond the grave. Fans of literature might recognize the library for being the favored meeting spot of Poe and his lover, Sarah Helen Whitman, who’s love would ultimately end in tragedy after Whitman spurned the author’s love. Today, the ghastly apparitions of a heartbroken Poe can still be seen today, perhaps lingering about the library in agony and yearning for his long-lost love.

University Hall, Brown College

Acting as an emergency hospital during the Revolutionary War, pain and death are practically built into the foundation of Brown College’s University Hall. Hundreds of years later, students and college officials frequently report smelling strange scents…perhaps, the stench of decaying bodies, after countless soldiers met their grisly demise at this very location. The apparition of a long-dead revolutionary is said to make bone-chilling appearances in one of the building’s windows, along with the spirits of soldiers roaming the halls. Join us and experience firsthand the unspeakable horrors that plague the site of this former makeshift hospital, and dive into the eerie history of this historic building.

If you’re not ready to call it a night, consider joining Ghosts of Providence for a nighttime tour around the city. You might even come face-to-face with its more nocturnal residents, who are particularly active after the sun sets. Why is Providence So Haunted?

Uncover providence’s tortured past and tormented present.

Known s a bastion of “Hope”, the original motto of Rhode Island, the settlers of the colony founded the Providence Plantations to escape from religious persecution and find a place where they could worship freely, away from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  Tragically, the beacon of light transformed into a black hole, eventually becoming a gateway for otherworldly visitors, shocking hauntings, and numerous accounts of the unexplained.  The pull of darkness was so intense that it began to attract, like an evil magnet, the world’s most famous horror writers who were destined for notoriety because of their unusual obsession with the morbid and the macabre.  Even these giants of horror were finally doomed to lives of torment and torture due to their fixation on all things supernatural.

Outside of H.P. Lovecraft's The Shunned House

THE DARK SIDE OF A COLONIAL CITY WITH A FORSAKEN HISTORY AND A TERRIFYING FUTURE

Dive into the disturbingly darker side of the history of Providence to discover the reasons former infamous residents such as Edgar Allen Poe, Bram Stoker, and H.P. Lovecraft searched and found ghostly inspirations for terrifying tales in the town’s tormented buildings and alleyways.

Trek cautiously down the sordid streets of this colonial city and attempt to encounter the ghosts of soldiers in Revolutionary war uniforms whose dearly departed souls haunt Brown College’s University Hall.  Find out firsthand what it feels like to come face-to-face with terrifying hauntings that have plagued Providence locals and visitors for centuries.

Used as an emergency hospital to treat soldiers during the Revolutionary War, the echoes of pain, dying, and death have soaked into the very foundations of Brown College’s University Hall. Hundreds of years later,  reports of strange smelling scents wafting from the hall are documented by students and staff.  These are speculated to be the stench of dead, decaying bodies, that historians recount were left behind when countless soldiers tragically met their bitter ends on the very grounds of the University Hall.  Appearances of an apparition resembling a long-dead revolutionary soldier create quite a bone-chilling disturbance when its sightings are quickly passed along and transformed from rumor into fact as countless students tell the tale of spotting it in one of the building’s windows. Even more terrifying are the sporadic, but well-documented account of spirits of soldiers roaming the halls.

Join us and experience firsthand the unspeakable horrors that plague the site of this former makeshift hospital, and dive into the eerie history of this historic building..

Did you know scientists at Princeton University may have proven the existence of ghosts?

Researchers at Princeton University have been studying paranormal phenomena in a scientific context for almost 30 years, through a department called “PEAR”. It stands for “Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research”. PEAR is a scientific study of consciousness-related physical phenomena.

Our guides take their role seriously - they are guiding you through 300 years of history, in places that have been evidently haunted, almost weekly, since they were discovered.

Have you ever heard of a “memory palace”? It's a technique used by memory athletes to remember fantastic amounts of information with perfect recall, in a short period of time. What you do is, you associate different imagery and stories with different features of locations you're familiar with (like different rooms in your house).

Icon

If you've only got a couple days in town, maybe you're with your significant other, or maybe you're with your friends, or even your whole family, and you're spending your precious paid time off here in Williamsburg, so that every move you make counts… then you simply must come visit us.

Icon

Did you know the hormones our bodies release when we're thrilled have an influence on attraction? It's why roller-coasters make such a great first date. This has been studied over and over, but it's worth repeating here. If you're taking someone on a date, and you're looking to have a lot of fun together, or to increase attraction for each other, it's a good idea to find something that gets the blood pumping. The best activities are even a little scary, like a roller coaster. Or a haunted old church.

What is it worth to take a trip with your family that actually brings everyone together, even if it's just for an hour or two? Family vacations can be stressful, and sometimes it can be a real pain to get everyone to get into the spirit doing the same thing, without whining or eyes rolling. And how many memories do we really get to have fun reminiscing over as the years pass?

US Ghost Adventure tours are the real deal. One of the first things you'll notice, that makes us different than the other ghost tours in town, is we don't walk the traditional paths. And we don't use silly costumes or lanterns. Why? Because we only walk the paths of the stories we have fact-checked and verified. We explore real haunted sites across the U.S.

Icon

US Ghost Adventure tours are easy to fit into most schedules, because we run late in the evening. We have different start times in the evening to choose from, including with ghost tours starting at 8pm and 9pm, and the Ultimate tour at 10pm. Finally, at 90-125 minutes long, you can almost always find a tour that fits your schedule.

This is our favorite. Not long ago, a pop-science article was published that claimed the Large Hadron Collider at CERN had debunked ghosts. In reality, a scientist named Brian Cox mused that if there were a medium that could preserve a person (something like a 'soul'), he believes he would have seen evidence of it in his particle physics work.

Courtney (a.k.a. Ghost Mom)

After living in a deliciously haunted house in the Green Mountains of Vermont, it is wonderfully appropriate that Courtney would become a ghost tour owner! After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from the University of Rhode Island, Courtney and her friend Mike (a.k.a Ghost Dad, who is no longer with the tour but will always be Ghost Dad) decided to create a business that would bring them joy and push their creativity.

providence boat ghost tour

Using her amazing experience as a tour guide for the Newport Ghost Walk and personal experiences with the paranormal, Courtney and Mike decided to try their hands at creating a tour. Courtney has been the lead guide and storyteller since the tour’s inception in 2006 and is now the sole (and soul) owner of Providence Ghost Tour. In her spare time, Courtney enjoys hiking with her husband and dog, Baxter (the Providence Ghost Pup), taking road trips, and cooking (which is as frequently unsuccessful as it is successful). Wanna know a secret about Courtney? She is a scary movie chicken and has to sleep with the lights on after watching anything that involves bumps in the night.

When not leading groups through the East Side, Kelly can be found sharing the joy of theatre with youth, and enjoying bearing witness to her children’s discovery and exploration of the world around them (and wondering if her son sees someone she doesn’t when he says hi to the corner of the room).

Stephanie has been a Ghost Guide since 2015, and has been in love with ghost stories since childhood. Originally from South County, she is a graduate of URI Theater Department where she studied acting and costume design. By day she is a master seamstress, by night she tells ghost stories on the historic streets of Providence in a fancy dress. The best of both worlds.

  • L2965CEsueh 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to spend a morning and step back in time. This tour was fun and informative. Our guide had so many exciting stories, which made it very entertaining. It differed from some tours, where the guide checks notes for each stop. It also ties history to today, and you can see the impact of the people and places that she talked about on the current city. Read more Written April 1, 2024

I had a really great time on this tour—the guide had unique and interesting stories from multiple centuries for various houses and buildings along Benefit Street. You learn about the founders and the Brown family and others into the late 1900s. The costume just added to it all! Highly recommend! Read more Written March 10, 2024

  • melissaann729 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to appreciate the history packed into an iconic Providence street We had 3 generations together for this fabulous tour - and learned so much in the space of 90 mins. There is truly so much interesting history to Benefit St and our guide did an incredible job weaving together interesting stories that only scratched the surface of her knowledge. She has clearly put a tremendous amount of work into the research and narration that made the time fly. It was fascinating to understand the street's lasting impact on our world and city. I'd highly recommend for anybody who lives in Providence or has the opportunity to visit! Read more Written January 5, 2024
  • U5465RTjennyc 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fascinating, spooky, and fun I did this tour I’m 2016 (in the rain) and I loved it then, so when I got married years later and moved back to RI to live on Benefit St, I HAD to take my husband on it - on Friday the 13th no less! This time our guide was Shelly. She did a fantastic job. Both guides that I’ve had have been wonderful, and after completing a not-so-great tour on Fed Hill recently, I have to really appreciate guides who know their material well. She even quoted a solid chunk of The Conquerer Worm, which probably made my husband’s evening. I think this is a fantastic tour for locals and visitors alike. It’s historical, educational, spooky, and fun. I highly recommend. Read more Written October 14, 2023
  • C2260TIerinf 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highly recommend for the spooky enthusiasts and scaredy cats alike! My fiancé and I went on the ghost tour last night with Kelly as our guide. We cannot recommend this tour enough! Kelly is an engaging story teller and incredibly knowledgeable historian. I enjoy all things spooky, while my fiancé is a bit of a scaredy cat. This tour was perfect for both of us to enjoy together: Kelly is able to perfectly balance the energy of the group by telling grim ghostly tales in creepy locations while sprinkling in humor AND happy ghost stories when needed. She even hung around after the tour ended to show us photos of activity caught on cameras by previous guests on the tour— so cool! 10 outta 10 recommend. Read more Written September 10, 2023
  • JKCHAMA 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Wear Comfy Shoes Whether the ghost tales are true or fibbed just a tiny bit for added excitement, our guide was a phenomenal narrator. She had a quirky sense of humor as well. Kudos! Make certain you are equipped w/ comfortable footwear because you will need it. The tour route has many inclines. Why not log a few extra steps to counteract the extra calories you consume while on vacation? I really wanted to bring my mini flashlight but our tour souvenir was a flashlights. That worked out. It’s worth to hear a different perspective of the artsy, designer Providence you may think you know. We did the 8-9:30pm tour because, honestly, who is adhering to a decent bedtime while on vaca? We enjoyed it. Providence has an interesting history. Read more Written September 5, 2023

However, in terms of it being a ghost tour I’d give it one star. We saw nothing, no orbs, nothing creepy at all and the stories were more historical than scary.
