WILDLIFE ADVENTURES TO RAMSEY ISLAND SKOMER AND GRASSHOLM

Discover a magical island wilderness coupled with the fun and excitement of a true marine adventure.

Thousand Islands Expeditions have been running Ramsey Island boat trips since 1975.  Our wildlife adventure boat trips take you to see the islands of Ramsey, Skomer and Grassholm.  We also venture offshore in search of larger marine life like dolphins and if you are lucky a whale.

Thousand Islands has the sole landing rights to Ramsey Island RSPB Nature Reserve.   A ferry boat departs daily at 10.00 and 12.00 from 1st April to 31st October.  A limited number of day visitors get to explore this beautiful natural island nature reserve.

Ramsey Island is a special protection area for families of Chough, watch them feed in the short grassland.

In Spring the islands coastline is alive with hundred of nesting seabirds.  Guillimots, Razorbills and Fulmar nest on the hundred metre high cliffs.  Watch Peregrine Falcons and Chough fly overhead. The  Island  is home to one of the UK's largest Atlantic Grey Seal colonies. Hundreds of seal pups are born on Ramseys beaches from late August to October.

Harbour Porpoise feed in the fast currents in Ramsey Sound. Venture offshore to see the gannets on  Grassholm Island , home to over 37,000 pairs of breeding gannets.  Join our wildlife guide on a dolphin watching boat trip offshore and if you are lucky a sighting of a whale.

We run daily boat trips across St Brides  to Skomer Island to watch the Puffins.

Boat trips leave from the  RNLI Lifeboat Station  at St Justinians which is also an interesting place to visit.

A protected haven for wildlife

120m high cliffs with hidden coves, perfect for seals in autumn

An RSPB reserve

Ramsey Island, Pembrokeshire, Wales

A royal society for the protection of birds or rspb reserve, ramsey is just off the end of the st davids peninsula..

There’s a 3½ mile trail around the island, which can be rugged in places but it’s the best way to see the island. The summits of Carn Ysgubor and Carn Llundain give splendid views east to the mainland, south to  Skomer Island  and on the clearest of days, west to Ireland.

At nearly 120m (400 ft) in places, the western cliffs on the island are among the highest in Wales. They are home to ravens, peregrines and buzzards. In spring, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, kittiwakes and shags come to nest too. Choughs also breed on these cliffs, seeking out deep fissures and caves in which to build their nests.

From mid-July, however, the cliffs quieten as the auk chicks head out to the open sea then all the action turns to the beaches and caves as several hundred seal pups are born each autumn on Ramsey.

The southern heathlands are a special combination of heather, gorse and coastal plants. This habitat is the haunt of stonechats, meadow pipits, linnets and skylarks.

There is a small shop on the island and refreshments are available.

A round-island boat trip  is a great way to explore the island including those huge western cliffs and white fluffy seal pups hauled up on the beaches and caves during autumn.

How to get there

Boats leave from St Justinians for the short crossing to Ramsey at 10 am and 12 pm, returning at 4 pm (between 1st April or Easter, whichever is earlier, to 31st October). Book your ticket through Thousand Island Expeditions.

Read an interview with the Ramsey Island wardens, Lisa and Greg, and hear about life on their island home!

More About the Ramsey Island Experience

Owned by the RSPB and operated as a nature reserve, Ramsey Island is a wonderful haven for many different seabirds. Birdwatchers will be in their element, enjoying the antics of a variety of birds at close quarters, including guillemots, razorbills, peregrine falcons, kittywakes, choughs, Manx shearwaters, cormorants, shags, fulmars, oystercatchers and auks amongst many others.

The island is home to the largest colony of Atlantic grey seals in southern Britain and, on our boat trips, you will see lots of them in the island's many bays and caves. Porpoises often come close to the boat, particularly in the turbulent waters between the east side of Ramsey and the mainland, where they take advantage of the choppy waters to catch smaller fish while the tide is on its way in or out. Dolphins are occasional visitors in the summer when the waters are warm.

A brilliant afternoon trip!!

We had a brilliant guided trip around Ramsey Island. Falcon boats were very organised and had made lots of ‘covid-friendly’ adjustments so the whole trip felt really safe. They were easy (and fun!) to communicate with and were really flexible in fitting in with what we wanted. They shared LOTS of local knowledge about animals, birds, plants and geology with us. We were really lucky and saw lots of wildlife, as well as enjoying views of the island itself and speeding along in the boat. My kids are 9 and a hard to impress 13 year old, and both loved the whole trip. We would all thoroughly recommend any of their trips, thank you for a great afternoon Falcon Boats!!

Glorious Ramsay Island

Brilliant and informative tour with knowledgeable guides (Dan and Ffion) and wonderful wildlife and views. Best boat trip in a very long time, thank you.

What You Can Expect to See

During the spring and early summer, the sea cliffs of Ramsey are teeming with thousands of breeding seabirds such as Guillemots, Razorbills and Kittiwakes. Ramsey is also home to rare species such as the Peregrine falcon and Chough.

The star of the show year-round seems to be the Atlantic Grey seal, for which Ramsey is one of the largest breeding colonies in the UK. We also regularly encounter a pod of Harbour porpoise as they feed in the tidal waters of the Sound.

Trip Overview

Located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the 115 islands that make up the Seychelles are known for crystal-clear waters, endless stretches of powdery white-sand beaches, a diverse and vibrant marine ecosystem, and a range of unique plant and animal species.

Your journey starts with two days in Mahé, the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago and home to 90 per cent of the country’s population. With pristine beaches, lush forests, and dramatic mountains, it is a tropical paradise with a unique Creole culture that blends a wide range of influences.

Next, embark the 59-cabin Island Sky and cruise to the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, the remote Alphonse group, and finally to Aldabra, a vast coral atoll that is home to the world’s largest population of giant tortoises (over 100,000). The experienced Expedition Team of naturalists will lead several guided nature walks, plus there will be many opportunities for snorkeling among colorful reef fish, interesting coral formations, and various marine creatures.

Continue to Madagascar, a thousand-mile island boasting an impressive variety of spectacular landscapes from pristine coral reefs and coastal mangroves to virgin rain forests and native groves of Baobab trees. Geographically isolated for millions of years, nearly all of Madagascar’s intriguing animals and plants are found nowhere else on Earth, including nearly 100 varieties of lemurs. Madagascar’s people are also unique, having descended from Malay-Polynesian mariners, slaves from Africa, as well as traders from Arabia, India, and Portugal.

Feds: No transfers for Nassau riders with disabilities leaving county

Nassau's door-to-door paratransit system, Able-Ride, must take riders anywhere its...

Nassau's door-to-door paratransit system, Able-Ride, must take riders anywhere its regular bus routes go, including in Queens and Suffolk. Credit: NICE Bus

Nassau bus riders with disabilities no longer have to make transfers to reach locations in Queens and Suffolk under a recent federal ruling, officials said.

The Nassau Inter-County Express earlier this month disclosed an order by the Federal Transit Administration that said NICE’s door-to-door paratransit system, Able-Ride, must transport riders anywhere its regular bus routes go, including to some neighborhoods in Queens and to Farmingdale and South Huntington in Suffolk.

The new mandate, handed down late last year, will add more than $3 million to Nassau’s annual transit operating budget, which is climbing by $14 million overall this year, according to NICE.

NICE CEO Jack Khzouz said under “an arrangement that had been there for 25 years,” Able-Ride previously transported passengers only as far as the county’s boundaries, where they would have to transfer to another paratransit vehicle operated by the local transit system — Access-A-Ride in Queens, and Suffolk County Accessible Transit, or SCAT, in Suffolk.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • The Federal Transit Administration told Nassau bus operators that riders with disabilities can no longer be forced to make transfers to reach locations in Queens and Suffolk.
  • Disability right advocates said the old system discouraged some riders, and called the new system a "game changer."
  • Nassau bus officials said they quickly implemented a program to get into compliance, but called the new system inefficient. It is expected to add more than $3 million to Nassau’s transit budget.

Federal officials “decided that was not appropriate ... so we quickly implemented a program to get that into compliance,” Khzouz said at the Nassau Bus Transit Committee meeting on May 9, acknowledging the new operation is “very, very inefficient.”

From breaking news to special features and documentaries, the NewsdayTV team is covering the issues that matter to you.

By clicking Sign up, you agree to our privacy policy .

“Our paratransit vehicles now are traveling all the way into Jamaica, Flushing, Far Rockaway to deliver service. For those of us in transit, that’s a long 'deadhead' one way,” added Kzhouz, using industry parlance for a return trip without any passengers.

An FTA spokesperson, in a statement, confirmed the federal agency sent the county a "corrective letter ... explaining its obligation to provide paratransit where its fixed-route bus system crosses jurisdictional boundaries and instructing it to do so."

The new policy is a “game changer” for people with disabilities, said Michael Ring, board member of Disabled in Action of Metropolitan New York, an advocacy group. Ring said the direct Able-Ride service to and from Queens will mean more people with disabilities can now take a bus to Jamaica, where they can transfer to the Long Island Rail Road or subway system to get to jobs in Manhattan.

"The transfer system, they had discouraged anyone from using it. It was impossible," Ring said.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, paratransit operators — like NICE’s Able-Ride — must provide riders with appointment-based, door-to-door service within a 3/4-mile radius of any fixed bus route. Able-Ride serves about 5,500 riders a week, with recent ridership exceeding pre-COVID-19 levels, according to NICE.

NICE estimates that the change will cause Able-Ride’s operating hours to climb 18%, to 255,000 in 2024, up from 216,300 in 2023. At a cost of around $62 an hour to the county, the change accounts for an additional $3.3 million in NICE’s $167 million operating budget — up from about $153 million last year. Higher driver wages, insurance coverage and other costs contributed to the increase.

In a statement, Nassau Bus Transit Committee chairperson Dawn Falco said: “As an ongoing effort to service the Constituents of Nassau County, particularly those with the most need ... NICE will be absorbing the time and cost of providing extended services outside of the County lines to eliminate additional transfers for said riders.”

Since 2012, Nassau County has hired private contractor Transdev to operate its transit system. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, through a spokesperson, declined to comment. NICE gets 71% of the funding for its operating budget from state aid, 19% from fares, and only around 2% from the county.

Khzouz said the change will “put a strain” on NICE’s operation. But accessibility advocates said it was riders with disabilities that were being strained by having to transfer from one vehicle to another — sometimes with a wheelchair — to complete a trip.

“It can be nerve-wracking at times,” said Therése Brzezinski, director of planning and public policy for the Long Island Center for Independent Living in Levittown. More than just changing between vehicles, paratransit riders traveling beyond Nassau’s limits would be changing between transit agencies, with different operators, policies and technology.

“It just adds another layer of complexity to what is already a lot of hoop-jumping, frankly, that people with disabilities have to get their transportation,” she added.

Ring encouraged NICE to find ways to make the operation more efficient, including by outsourcing paratransit trips to private operators with accessible vehicles, including Uber drivers.

Kzhouz said NICE officials "don't know what demand is going to peak at" for the new direct service to locations in Queens and Suffolk.
