This can also lead to more severe effects of jet lag . Secondarily, if you’ll be staying at a hotel with an afternoon check-in, arriving early in the morning with all of your luggage may not be a bonus.

You can often drop your bags at the hotel early and explore the area while you wait for your room, but you may not be able to shower and freshen up from your overnight flight first.

Keep in mind that there’s nothing inherently bad about a red-eye flight, and treat it like any other evening so you don’t introduce unnecessary stress to your mind and body.

2. Wear compression socks

Compression socks can help reduce the risk of blood clots during long, overnight flights by helping maintain healthy blood flow, but even those with less serious health concerns can benefit from wearing a pair. I like to wear compression socks on any long flight to prevent swelling (which can take days to go down) and to help keep my legs more comfortable while stuck in the same position all night when my legs would typically be level with my body in bed.

3. Don’t bring electronic entertainment

What do you do on red-eye flights? Sleep. That’s the goal, at least, so don’t bring a plethora of screens that can keep you awake longer with excessive blue light exposure. They also dry out your eyes by reducing blinking and the plane cabin is dry enough as it is. You’re trying to avoid arriving with red eyes, not guaranteeing it.

Further, everyone else on the plane wants to sleep, too, so try not to light up your row with your bright devices . If you can’t sleep, don’t stress. Instead, consider some of these quieter, calmer things to do on a plane to pass the time comfortably.

4. Cover your eyes and ears

Light and sound will be your biggest obstacles to falling asleep and staying asleep on an overnight flight, so come prepared with an eye mask and something for your ears . If you can sleep comfortably with large headphones, opt for a set with noise-canceling capability. Otherwise, play some classical music through your smaller headphones or earbuds to distract from surrounding sounds. If you prefer silence, pack earplugs.

5. Settle in for the long haul

Red-eye flights are my favorite way to travel. It wasn’t always, though.

I often booked red-eye flights because of their endearing price point. Still, I found myself actually dreading the flight when it finally arrived.

After several years of travel, I’ve figured out how to make the experience less daunting. And now, I find red-eye flights quite enjoyable.

Here are some tips and in-flight essentials on how to make your next red-eye flight an enjoyable experience

What does “red-eye” flight mean .

A red-eye flight is a flight that leaves in the evening or late at night and arrives at your destination sometime in the morning. Essentially, the flight operates around the time when you’d usually be sleeping.

The term “red-eye” describes the puffy, red eyes people get from late-night travel. This doesn’t have to be you, though. I’ve compiled a list of everything you’ll need to know and purchase for a successful red-eye flight.

No need to be miserable! Just take the necessary steps, and you’ll soon find it’s your new favorite way to travel!

Why are red-eye flights better ?

1. they are often cheaper.   .

Because of their not-so-traveler-friendly flight times, red-eye flights are often cheaper than flights during regular daytime hours. Also, you’re saving money on accommodation by spending the night on the plane!

2. They offer faster check-in.

Airlines don’t operate as many flights during the night as they do during the day. Because of this, you’ll experience much faster check-in times and fewer delays in getting to your gate!

Airports are far less busy at night, so you’ll find everything much more efficient. Plus, usually, the flight will be carrying fewer people, too. Talk about all that extra legroom!

4. You’ll save a day’s worth of travel time.

You’ll have the ability to enjoy the entire first day of your trip! Arriving at your destination first thing in the morning allows for a full day of venturing off and exploring. You won’t feel like you used up a travel day.

Because fewer planes operate at night, you’ll experience far fewer delays. You’ll find that most flights actually take off on time!

Preparation For Your Red-Eye:

It’s important to  pack smart ..

Pack all your sleep essentials and hygiene products in your personal bag or carry-on luggage. Remember, you’ll want to be as comfortable as possible. 

Pre-book  your seat.

Pre-booking your seat allows you to pick the most optimal spot.

Personally, I always go for the window seat because no one will need to bother me to use the restroom or move about the cabin.

This also gives me control of the window shutter, so I can close it and not worry about the sunrise light blinding me mid-snooze. 

Wear  warm, comfortable clothing .

You’ll want to wear something warm and comfortable during your red-eye flight. I’m generally always cold on flights, so bringing an extra blanket or puffy jacket is helpful. I don’t worry about looking cute on flights. The baggier the clothes, the better!

Drink  water   and avoid caffeine & alcohol .

If you’re planning on getting some much-needed slumber on your red-eye flight, avoid caffeine and alcohol several hours before your flight.

Also, as an important rule of thumb, staying hydrated before your flight is essential because the air on planes is so drying. There’s nothing worse than a cottonmouth or a scratchy throat when trying to be comfortable on a plane. 

Take a sleep aid .

Ashwagandha, passionflower tea, valerian root, magnesium, or GABA sleep supplements are all great options to help you fall asleep.

An overnight bag. It’s best to stick to your nightly routine when first boarding an evening flight. 

As soon as the seatbelt sign turns off, I usually get up to the bathroom, where I do my nightly routine before bed. I use face wipes to cleanse my face, brush my teeth, freshen up with some deodorant, take my contact lenses out, and voila! 

A travel pillow. A red-eye flight must. The last thing you want is to wake up with a stiff neck!

While red-eye flights tend to be less noisy than daytime flights, you still may be sitting next to some noisy chatterboxes. Bring along some noise-canceling headphones and ensure you get some good shuteye.

This thing is a dream! Sitting in an airline seat can get extremely uncomfortable, making it tough to sleep during your red-eye flight. A foot hammock helps alleviate some tension off your lower joints and lower back by lifting your feet into a reclining position.

Get some sunlight ASAP.

Once you get off the plane, get yourself outside and into some natural light as soon as possible. The light dramatically reduces melatonin levels in the body, forcing you to feel more awake and energized!

Change into some fresh clothes.

Swap your comfy travel clothes for some new, clean attire.

You did your nightly routine before the red-eye flight. Now, do your morning routine! Sticking to habits helps trick your mind into thinking you got a full night’s rest. After all, it is the start of a new day!

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Dehydration can worsen feelings of jet lag, so keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.

If you’re looking for a super-specific definition that answers exactly what time a red-eye flight is , you won’t find one. What’s considered a red-eye flight is a fairly loose concept that covers any itinerary departing at night and arriving at the destination in the morning .

So, what does a red-eye flight mean for you if you choose one? It really doesn’t mean anything more than that you’ll be flying overnight .

If you, like most people, typically sleep during this time, it’s worth considering whether you historically sleep well on planes before booking a red-eye; if you fail to get a good bit of rest on board, you may arrive with tired, red eyes that give this flight its negative name .

Despite the bad reputation they seem to have, the benefits of a red-eye flight can be numerous. They’re typically cheaper than daytime flights and they allow you to arrive at your destination at the beginning of a new day , but there are airport and aeroplane benefits, too. Because fewer people fly during these times, airports are less crowded, which means both check-in lines and security lines are often dramatically shorter. It’s also easier to make your way to the gate with fewer people clogging the terminals.

The planes themselves are less likely to be full, too, which means you may score an empty neighbouring seat , or even an entirely empty row which is not only more comfortable but can help you sleep better. Fewer people also means less potential for ambient noise and commotion that can otherwise make sleep more difficult, too. You may even benefit from less traffic on the way to the airport.

Primarily, those who don’t sleep well on planes are not likely to have a great flight experience when flying when they would normally be sleeping, and will likely arrive groggy. This can also lead to more severe effects of jet lag .

Secondarily, if you’ll be staying at a hotel with an afternoon check-in, arriving early in the morning with all of your luggage may not be a bonus. You can often drop your bags at the hotel early and explore the area while you wait for your room, but you may not be able to shower and freshen up from your overnight flight first.

1. Don’t dread the flight

This may be easier said than done, but dreading the flight only increases the stress and anxiety that will make your journey less comfortable and may prevent you from falling asleep onboard, so don’t fixate on the fact that you’re taking a red-eye. Keep in mind that there’s nothing inherently bad about a red-eye flight, and treat it like any other evening so you don’t introduce unnecessary stress to your mind and body.

2. Wear compression socks

Compression socks can help reduce the risk of blood clots during long, overnight flights by helping maintain healthy blood flow, but even those with less serious health concerns can benefit from wearing a pair. I like to wear compression socks on any long flight to prevent swelling (which can take days to go down) and to help keep my legs more comfortable while stuck in the same position all night when my legs would typically be level with my body in bed.

3. Don’t bring electronic entertainment

What do you do on red-eye flights? Sleep. That’s the goal, at least, so don’t bring a plethora of screens that can keep you awake longer with excessive blue light exposure. They also dry out your eyes by reducing blinking, and the plane cabin is dry enough as it is. You’re trying to avoid arriving with red eyes, not guaranteeing it. Further, everyone else on the plane wants to sleep, too, so try not to light up your row with your bright devices. If you can’t sleep, don’t stress. Instead, consider some of the quieter, calmer things to do on a plane to pass the time comfortably.

4. Cover your eyes and ears

Light and sound will be your biggest obstacles to falling asleep and staying asleep on an overnight flight, so come prepared with an eye mask and something for your ears . If you can sleep comfortably with large headphones, opt for a set with noise-cancelling capability. Otherwise, play some classical music through smaller headphones or earbuds to distract from surrounding sounds. If you prefer silence, pack earplugs.

I am a painfully light sleeper. It’s a nightly struggle, but never more so than when I’m on a red-eye flight . Growing up with both sets of grandparents overseas, I’ve been taking overnight flights annually my entire life, and I’ve never been able to get more than a measly half hour of sleep during those dreaded red-eyes, which means my first day at my destination is always a wash as I struggle to stay awake while running on little to no sleep. 

That all changed earlier this year when I took a 10.5-hour, overnight flight to Chile. I took a maximalist’s approach to packing my carry-on with a variety of gizmos and gadgets, all of which promised to marginally improve my in-flight sleep potential. Although I had tried a number of these items on their own before, this was the first time I piled everything in my arsenal into my carry-on and used them all in tandem. 

The result: I caught a solid 5.5 hours of uninterrupted sleep — in economy . If you can at all relate to the misery of feeling like the only person still awake on a crowded red-eye flight, read on for the items that made my slumber possible, starting at $10. While it may be tempting to try just one or two of these gadgets, I attribute my success to utilizing all of them together for maximum sleep potential.

Kimiandy Inflatable Travel Air Pillow 

The standard C-shaped foam neck pillow that can be bought at any airport kiosk never did it for me. As a side- and stomach-sleeper, I’ve found it impossible to drift off while leaning back in my airplane seat. This inflatable pillow, however, rests on my tray table allowing me to lean forward on it as I sleep. The face hole is positioned at a 45-degree angle, which is said to decrease pressure on the cervical vertebrae. 

Despite how it awkward looks, I’ve found this pillow to be quite comfortable since it gets closer to a simulating side- or stomach-sleeper position than a C-shaped pillow. When not in use, the pillow deflates and folds neatly into an included carrying sack, which measures about 7 inches by 4 inches for easy transport. 

Basic Concepts Airplane Foot Hammock

If you’ve ever been lucky enough to fly on an airplane equipped with footrests on the seat in front of you, you know what a game-changer it is to have your legs elevated while you fly. Besides giving you a more comfortable position to sleep in, elevating your feet also helps alleviate foot swelling, ease back aches, and improve blood flow. Unfortunately, many planes do not offer this comfort, which is where this packable foot hammock comes in. 

It uses an adjustable strap to hook onto the tray table in front of you (but don't worry, you can still use the tray when the hammock's all set up). Then, you rest your feet or calves on the padded swing. My husband and I were both impressed with how simple and impactful this $15 hack turned out to be.

A sleep mask is a bit of a given when trying to get shut-eye in public. But this isn’t just any sleep mask that might be handed out by a flight attendant before takeoff. This silky soft option is equipped with flat-lay Bluetooth speakers, which are positioned over your ears like headphones. You get noise-reducing sounds in your ears, while your seat neighbor hears nothing. 

During my flight, I used a white noise app on my phone to drown out closing bathroom doors and crying babies in the plane cabin. With this device, I didn’t have to worry about accidentally dropping an earbud while I slept and losing it under the seat behind me (which has definitely happened to me before).

Compression socks can stimulate circulation, which helps to reduce swelling and discomfort in your legs and feet. My feet always swell on planes, and I found these knee-highs help a lot. Bombas’ medium-level compression socks are great for people who aren’t accustomed to wearing compression socks daily. They have graduated compression (15 to 20 mmHg), which is stronger in the ankle and easier in the calf to hug your legs without squeezing them. Foot-hugging arch support adds even more comfort.

As soon as the seatbelt sign deactivates after takeoff, I head to the back of the plane and ask a flight attendant if they would fill up my empty bottle for me (it’s never been an issue). That way, I don’t have to stress over waking up when the beverage cart comes around to get a measly plastic cup of water. I like the 40-ounce version because it means I never have to go back for refills, but there are also 32-ounce, 24-ounce, and 16-ounce options available for those looking to pack lighter. 

Philips One by Sonicare Battery Toothbrush

At home, I’ve found that a repetitive bedtime routine gets my mind into “sleep mode” and helps me fall asleep faster. When I’m traveling, I try to replicate as much of that routine as possible to help me relax. Since I’m accustomed to using an electric toothbrush at home, I’ve found that a cheap manual toothbrush feels like a noticeable downgrade when I’m traveling. Instead, I pack this travel-friendly super slim electric toothbrush, which operates on a single AAA battery — no charging required. Before attempting to drift off, I get ready for “bed” by brushing my teeth with it in the airplane bathroom.

If you’re booking with an airline that allows you to reserve a specific seat, always opt for a window seat if one is available. When you have a window seat, you’ll have control of the shade so you can easily close it to block out any light if you want to sleep. Even if your flight is completely overnight, flashing lights from the wings of the airplane can create a distraction that may prevent you from sleeping. With a window seat, you’re also less likely to be disturbed by other passengers getting out of their seats or walking up and down the aisles to the lavatory.

If you’re flying with an airline that doesn’t offer reserved seating, try to get to your gate early or take other measures to get priority boarding. This way, you can improve your chances of being able to snag a window seat. If all the window seats are taken, your second-best bet is to choose a middle seat away from the aisle. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than being potentially nudged and woken up by other passengers or flight crew in the aisles. Fortunately, red-eye flights don’t tend to fill up easily, so finding a decent seat shouldn’t be too difficult.

Plan Around Your Usual Bedtime, If Possible

If you go to sleep around the same time each night, try to book a flight that is scheduled to take off around that time. This way, you’ll be getting tired just as the plane takes off and may have an easier time falling asleep. It may not always be possible to book a flight that leaves exactly around your bedtime, but booking one that leaves as close to that time as possible can make a big difference in your ability to fall (and stay) asleep on the plane.

Always Opt for a Direct Flight

There’s really nothing worse than having to wake up in the middle of the night to catch a connecting flight. If you want to get a good night’s rest on a red-eye flight, avoid layovers at all costs. Not only can these add stress to your trip, but catching another flight also means struggling to get comfortable and fall asleep on a plane  twice . While avoiding layovers may not be possible for every flight, it’s always best to opt for a non-stop route whenever possible.

Dress Practically and Comfortably

While you probably shouldn’t show up to the airport in your robe and fuzzy slippers, you should dress comfortably for a red-eye flight so you can increase your chances of  being able to fall asleep . A pair of casual pants or leggings, combined with a loose-fitting top and slip-on shoes will provide the comfort you need while still keeping you remotely presentable. You may also want to dress in a few layers so you can add or remove clothes as needed to stay warm/cool on the plane.

Pack Accessories to Help You Sleep

The right accessories and gadgets can go a long way in helping you catch some restful sleep aboard a red-eye flight. Invest in a quality pair of noise-canceling headphones or earplugs to block out noise, and don’t forget a quality  sleep mask  as well. Some other accessories to consider packing in your carry-on that could help you fall asleep include:

  • a  neck pillow
  • a large scarf or light blanket
  • a small, nutritious snack
  • a smartphone or tablet (for playing music or audiobooks)

Don’t Drink Alcohol or Caffeine

While it may seem like a no-brainer to avoid caffeine before a red-eye flight, you’ll also want to avoid making the common mistake of thinking a glass or two of wine before your flight will help you sleep. While it’s true that a small amount of alcohol may help you initially doze off, studies have shown that alcohol consumption leads to  more restless sleep and poor overall sleep quality .

Instead of alcohol or caffeine, opt for water to keep you hydrated. Just don’t drink so much that you’re constantly making trips to the airplane lavatory instead of sleeping.

Getting Through a Red-Eye Flight

Now that you’ve taken all the steps to prepare and pack for your red-eye flight, there are a few more things you’ll want to keep in mind as you get ready for take-off.

Follow Your Usual Routine

Whenever possible, follow your usual bedtime routine; this will help your body ease into sleep mode naturally. If you usually brush your teeth, drink a glass of water, and read a few chapters of a book before you fall asleep, this should be pretty easy to recreate on a plane. If you drink a cup of tea before bed, don’t hesitate to bring some aboard; you can ask a flight attendant for a glass of hot water to make it from the comfort of your seat.

While some aspects of your bedtime routine may not be possible to recreate on a plane, many of them should be feasible.

Block Out Cabin Lights and Noises

While cabin lights are automatically turned off by the flight crew on a red-eye flight, passengers may still illuminate their overhead lights to read. Meanwhile, blue light from other passengers’ phones and tablet screens could also become a distraction to your sleep efforts. You can block all this out by donning your sleep mask. Drown out distracting noises that would otherwise keep you up by putting on noise-canceling Bluetooth headphones. Some prefer to listen to music or white noise as they fall asleep. Meanwhile, earplugs may be a more suitable option for those who don’t want their movement restricted by bulky headphones.

Consider Melatonin or Essential Oils

Incorporating a melatonin supplement or a light spritz of calming essential oils (such as lavender) may also help you lull into dreamland. Just be sure to ease into taking a melatonin supplement by opting for the lowest dose and only increase it as needed. Do a little research before you decide to use melatonin to help you sleep on a red-eye flight.

Give Aisle-Mates a Heads-Up

Reduce the risk of being woken up by any other passengers sitting in your aisle by letting them know you intend to sleep through as much of the flight as possible. This way, they’ll know not to wake you if the beverage cart rolls around or for any other reason. You may also want to buckle your seatbelt  over  your clothes so that flight attendants don’t have to wake you to make sure your seatbelt is fastened during times of turbulence.

Set an Alarm to Wake You

If you don’t want to be jostled awake when it’s time to land, consider setting an alarm that will wake you up gradually and gently before your flight is scheduled to land. This could be 10 minutes before your scheduled arrival time or even 30-45 minutes, depending on how long you’ll need to reorient yourself and get ready for the day.

If you have time before you land, head to the bathroom lavatory and freshen up. Splash some water on your face, brush your teeth, and drink some water. You might even put your headphones on and listen to some energizing music to help you wake up and feel ready to take on the day ahead.

After You Land

Even if you slept relatively well on the plane, waking up after a red-eye flight can leave you feeling a little disoriented. The scramble to get off the plane, retrieve your suitcases from the luggage carousel, and make your way to your hotel (or any other destination) can be overwhelming. With this in mind, there are a few things you may want to do right after you land from a fast plane flight to help ease you into a new day.

Get Ready For The Day ASAP

Help “trick” your body into beginning the morning anew by changing out of whatever comfy clothes you wore on the plane and into something a little more put-together. If you have a business meeting to attend early in the morning or mid-afternoon, go ahead and get changed into your business attire in the airport restroom. This is also a good opportunity to use a little dry shampoo, deodorant, and/or body spray to refresh until you have an opportunity to shower.

Fight Jet Lag With Light Exercise

While it may feel like the last thing you want to do after a red-eye flight, some light physical activity can make a world of difference when it comes to waking up and energizing yourself. This doesn’t mean you need to head straight to your hotel gym for a vigorous treadmill workout; even a quick power-walk around the airport terminal, followed by some light stretching or yoga, can get your day off to the right start.

Reward Yourself With Caffeine

Remember all the caffeine you purposely avoided before your red-eye flight? Now is the time to reward yourself with a glorious cup of coffee, espresso, energy drink, or any other caffeinated beverage that will help kickstart your day. Just be careful not to go overboard, as too much caffeine will inevitably give you the jitters and lead to a mid-afternoon crash.

Power Through Until Bedtime

As tempting as it may be to take a nap at the hotel once you get the opportunity (especially if you didn’t sleep that well on the flight), your best bet is to stay awake until your regular bedtime. Otherwise, a nap could throw off your sleep schedule and make it even harder to fall asleep at night. Keeping yourself busy throughout the day following a red-eye flight can help you avoid dozing off before your regular bedtime; and once the time arrives, you can sink into your cozy hotel bed and snooze the night away.

Red-Eye Flights: The Bottom Line

While red-eye flights may not be the most desirable option for all travelers, they can be a practical choice if you’re looking to save money and don’t mind sleeping on a plane. And of course, with a little planning and preparation, you can maximize your chances of catching some restful sleep on an overnight flight. Ultimately, the best piece of advice you can follow is to try to stick to your routine as much as possible. From booking a flight that takes off around your typical bedtime to sticking with your bedtime routine on the plane, a little familiarity can go a long way.

Once you arrive at your destination, do your best to stay up until bedtime so you can stick to your schedule and wake up the following day feeling totally refreshed. From there, you’ll be ready to enjoy the rest of your travels.

If you’ve ever traveled a long way on a tight budget, you probably know the old backpacker’s tip: Book a red-eye flight or overnight train in the place of a night of accommodation to save money. But the problem with that seemingly sound advice, of course, is that packed plane cabins and rumbling train cars aren’t exactly conducive to a night’s sleep.

Red-eye flights can save you money, but they can also leave you exhausted upon arrival. There is a way to reconcile those two things and get some rest, however. One simple change to your plane habits can go a long way.

I personally loathed red-eye flights until recently, but kept booking them when they could save me money. Now, I can tolerate red-eye flights thanks to a friend who told me her secret to getting some overnight sleep on the plane: following your nighttime routine as if you were at home.

The One Rule to Follow on a Red-Eye Flight

Follow your nighttime routine . It seems like pretty ordinary advice—but for me it was revolutionary. Instead of getting on the plane antsy about whether I’d sleep or just end up binge-watching movies, I’d have a plan to settle into the flight. That also meant making sure I made it to the bathroom in the first hour of flight (while everyone is still awake), rather than sitting for the entire flight in fear of waking up an aisle-seat mate.

The beauty of this rule is that it is different for everybody and depends on what your personal before-bed routine looks like. Here’s what works best for me.

Eat Dinner:   If you’re not picky about plane food and it’s being served on your flight, great—enjoy one of the few things airlines still give out for free. If not, enjoy a healthy meal at home or bring some food with you. Contrary to what lots of people seem to believe about packing a meal for the flight or terminal, the TSA does allow food through security (though it’s subject to the usual liquid and gel restrictions ). An added bonus of eating your own food or a healthy to-go option is that plane meals are typically loaded with salt that can make you bloat or dehydrate you. If you’re flying internationally, be sure to eat or throw away anything customs might require you to declare when you arrive, like fruit or veggies.

Brush Your Teeth:  Whatever you’ve eaten for dinner, brushing your teeth should always be a priority before bed—even on the plane. Now that I do it before sleeping on the plane I find it hard to believe I ever skipped it—it’s basic hygiene, and it can help you feel instinctively like it’s almost time for bed. Here’s how to do it in flight: Bring a disposable, pre-pasted toothbrush in your carry-on so you don’t have to worry about dirtying one in the lavatory, and use your reusable water bottle ( never the plane tap water ) to brush and rinse.

Wash Up: Makeup-removing or simple cleansing face wipes make a world of difference when you’re on a germy plane surrounded by people. Washing up is also probably a typical bedtime routine that will help you feel like you’re more ready to fall asleep. Planes are dirty places, so washing up in flight should always mean using disposable face wipes . To feel extra fresh, I usually follow up with a travel-sized toning spritz like Beekman 1802 Facial Mist . Pack travel-sized versions of whatever you use nightly and replicate the motions and smells of your bedtime routine—it’s surprisingly helpful.

Unwind:  Do whatever else you typically do before bed: read, watch a show, pack some sleepy-time tea (ask a flight attendant for hot water), or even order a small glass of wine if that’ll help you relax. Research suggests that looking at blue light makes it harder to fall asleep, so I opt for reading on something low-light like my Kindle before going to sleep—both at home and on red-eye flights.

Get Cozy:  While it will never be the same as your bed, your plane seat will feel a lot cozier with the help of a few simple travel accessories. Try a supportive neck pillow , a soft cardigan , fuzzy socks to replace your tight shoes, and a big scarf that can double as a blanket . Even though the cabin lights will be off, an eye mask and earplugs can help you temporarily forget that you’re actually in a cramped plane cabin—so you can rest up for your destination without worrying what everyone around you is doing.

There are a few situations in which it makes sense to fly on a red eye flight. Let’s explore some of the reasons why it makes sense to fly on a red eye flight.

You can fly a red eye flight to save money

First, it makes sense to fly on a red eye flight if you intentionally want to skip a night of accommodation. If your red eye flight departs at 11:30 pm and lands at 6:00 am the next morning, you can get all your sleeping in during the flight. You don’t have to pay for a hotel and you can save money on your trip .

You can fly a red eye flight to save time

Second, it makes sense to fly on a red eye if you want to save time.

Let’s say you have a wedding to attend in California, and you live in New York. Let’s also consider that you have an event to attend on Friday, after work.

If you take a red eye flight, you can depart Friday night and arrive in California, the next morning. You won’t waste time being on a plane for six hours on Saturday, so you can instead use that time to enjoy seeing family and friends.

If you felt motivated to do so, you could even take a red eye flight home, Sunday night, and arrive at 7 am, as an example, and head straight to work. You may be tired, but you surely got to maximize that trip out west.

As you can see, people take red eye flights to save time, or save money, or save both of these things at the same time. Red eye flights can be helpful in these particular cases.

What are some ways to sleep on a red eye flight?

Dan has a really hard time sleeping on flights. He embraces the fact that he can’t sleep, and tries to be productive when we fly.

Let’s say he “tries,” because he usually watches movies until the flight lands. Becca is able to sleep for most of the red eye flight if not all of it, if the flight time happens during regular sleeping time (midnight to 8 am, or so).

Knowing this, we plan accordingly. We’ll plan for some rest time in the middle of the day wherever we go. If there is a time change between our origin and destination, we try to stay up for as long as we can, to try and get ahead of the jet lag.

There are quite a few benefits of flying on a red eye flight. Let’s explore some of the pros of flying on a red eye flight.

You’ll likely pay less

Red eye flights are considered less desirable, so you can often get a good deal on a flight if you choose the red eye flight.

You’ll get to your destination early

With the innate timing of red eye flights, you may arrive any time between 4 and 8 am when you arrive. If you have a way to sleep on the flight, you can maximize the time on a trip like this.

Rather than losing half a day to time spent on a flight, you can really enjoy a day of three meals and sightseeing or events in the location of your trip.

You’ll optimize your time in both destinations

With some sacrificing of sleep, you can make a three-day trip into a real three-day trip, instead of spending an entire morning on a flight when you arrive and an entire afternoon on a flight when you depart. This is how to maximize vacation time, for those who are game!

What are the disadvantages of a red eye flight?

Although there are a few clear benefits for red eye flights, the disadvantages are off-putting for may travelers. Let’s explore some of the cons of flying on a red eye flight.

If you’re someone who needs to sleep in a bed, or you have trouble sleeping on planes, a red eye may not be the best flight option for you.

Kids or elderly family members

If you are traveling with children or elderly family members who may need special care, then red eye flights are probably not the best option, despite the advantages.

Having a layover

If you have a layover or connecting flight during a red eye flight, this can disrupt your sleep and rest overnight. Also, having layovers between red eye flights is exhausting.

Sometimes arriving in a city early isn’t always the greatest. Hotel and Airbnb check-in times don’t usually start until noon, at the earliest (and sometimes as late as 4 pm at select hotel chains). When arriving on a red eye flight, you’ll have a lot of time on your hands before being able to check into your accommodation.

When we traveled to Asia, we took a lot of night buses, which function in the same way as red eye flights.

We’d depart from a city at night, and we would arrive at a new place around 6 am. Some hostels we stayed in had a room dedicated for this purpose and you could take a nap in a common room, and store your luggage in a closet.

Note that this type of offering may be unique to Asia and other parts of the world in which this type of trip is more common.

Where did the term ‘red eye flight’ come from?

It’s hard to trace back to an exact origin, but “red eye” flight is translated from your eyes being bloodshot because you are so tired

Honestly, this nickname for this type of overnight flight makes sense, because the times I’ve taken red eye flights have made me really tired!

Are red eye flights safe?

The actual red eye flights themselves are safe and it’s common that most passengers on a red eye flight will fall asleep very fast.

Passengers may even sleep for the entirety of the flight, so consider that if you take a red eye flight, you could be on a plane full of sleepy people.

As for airports, they are generally safe at all hours of the day and night. If you’re feeling nervous about being in an airport in a foreign country late at night or early in the morning, consider that airport security for entering the airport can be even better than what you may be used to at home.

In the airports that we’ve been in recently in Guatemala and Mexico for example, a passport or sometimes a flight confirmation is required to walk into the airport, whereas in the US, you (or anyone) can often walk into an airport and physically be there lawfully at any point before the security check.

However, consider that when you arrive, it may be early morning, or before sunrise.

There are some cities, and especially smaller places, that can start to feel sketchy late at night and early in the morning.

To avoid any sketchy taxi situations when you arrive, try and arrange a taxi ahead of time. Talk to your hotel staff, hostel owner or Airbnb host to see if they have any taxi services that they trust. This has worked for us in a number of different cities and countries.

We also recommend that you use common sense! Don’t walk alone in the dark near an airport, and avoid dark streets, especially when you are not familiar with a new area in your destination.

Why should you trust us?

Between the two of us ( Becca & Dan ) we’ve taken a lot of flights. In that batch of flights, you bet we’ve taken our fair share of red eye flights. We like red eye flights for all of the benefits that we’ve listed above. The primary reason being cost and the secondary reason being that it meant we’d get to our final destination with a full day ahead of us. We’re ok sacrificing sleep (at least for now).

The disadvantages of red eye flights aren’t strong enough to steer us away. However, now that we’re traveling with our daughter , we might need to reconsider!

There's nothing more annoying than waking up at the crack of dawn and hurrying to the airport , only to find out your early morning flight is delayed .

Flight delays are undesirable for any traveler, but they can be extra frustrating for those with early morning and late night flights – especially when places to grab food or coffee are closed or your red-eye cuts into your sleep.

To help travelers avoid delays on their next flight, Upgraded Points ranked the best and worst airports for early morning and late night flights. The travel company analyzed data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics on the 50 busiest U.S. airports, including the percentage of flights that depart before 8 a.m. and after 8 p.m., as well as how many flights get delayed and the average delayed departure.

"Booking the first flight out or a red-eye can greatly improve your travel experience," Alex Miller, founder of Upgraded Points, told USA TODAY in a statement. "These off-peak flights often come with fewer crowds, meaning shorter lines at security and less hassle overall. Additionally, flights during these times are typically less expensive, offering a budget-friendly option for travelers. Early and late flights are less prone to delays since they avoid the busiest times of the day, making your travel plans more reliable."

Is it worth taking an early-bird or red-eye flight from D.C.-area airports?

It’s not always comfortable taking a red-eye flight, especially if you are in economy and forced to sleep upright, but off-peak travel may be worth it, if it means an emptier airport and cheaper airfare.

However, you’ll want to keep in mind which airport you’re traveling out of.

A new ranking of the 50 best and worst U.S. airports for both early and late-night flights put Arlington’s Reagan National Airport (DCA) toward the bottom of the list for both. DCA is No. 34 for pre-8 a.m. flights and No. 32 for post-8 p.m. travel.

The UpgradedPoints.com list of best airports for off-peak travel factors in the percentage of off-peak flights available, the number and average of delays and the number of places that sell coffee or alcohol.

Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) Airport fares better for early birds, coming in at No. 16. Dulles International Airport ranked at No. 27.

For late-night travelers, BWI falls to 27 and Dulles rises to 18.

Nationwide, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in Ohio was No. 1 for early morning flights. Miami International Airport is in 50th place.

On the other side of the spectrum, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta was first on the list for late night travel and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport came in last.

History of Omsk

Foundation of omsk.

The need to build a Russian fortress on the banks of the Irtysh at the mouth of the Om River arose in connection with the steppe nomadic peoples. In particular, with the Oirats, whose tribes in the first decades of the 17th century began to appear within the borders of the Russian state being under the onslaught of their external enemies and as a result of internal civil strife. However, various foreign and domestic political problems of Russia hindered the development and defense of the South Siberian borders.

The situation changed only at the beginning of the 18th century, when the Russian conquest of Siberia intensified. Since Peter I paid great attention to geographical research in the south, the expeditions of that time combined socio-political tasks and tasks of scientific research.

One of such expeditions was led by the Russian military and statesman, associate of Peter I, Major General Ivan Bukhgolts. The goals of the expedition, numbering about 3,000 people, were to search for ore and gold deposits, the discovery of trade routes to India and China, as well as the construction of towns on the Irtysh River.

The expedition left Tobolsk to the south along the Irtysh in July 1715. In the spring of 1716, after a conflict with the Dzungars in the north of today’s Kazakhstan, the remnants of the expedition (about 700 people) withdrew to the mouth of the Om River, where they laid a new fortress named Omsky ostrog (fortified settlement).

According to the census of 1725, 992 people lived in the fortress, in 1742 - 1,092 people. From the first years of its existence, it served as a place of exile for prisoners. After serving hard labor and imprisonment, a lot of them stayed in Omsk for permanent residence.

Omsk in the second half of the 18th century

The ethnic composition of the region’s population was formed in the process of settling the territory. Russians, Germans, Ukrainians, Poles, Belarusians, and representatives of many other nationalities were sent here to serve or were exiled. The indigenous people of the region were the Siberian Tatars and Kazakhs, who switched to a sedentary lifestyle.

The foundation of the second Omsk fortress took place in 1762. The first fortress, although it occupied a favorable geographical position, was wooden and, by the middle of the 18th century, it was dilapidated. In 1765, new stone fortifications were constructed. The first stone structure of the fortress was the Resurrection Military Cathedral, built in 1773 and preserved to this day.

In the end of the 18th century, the Omsk fortress was one of the largest structures in the eastern part of the Russian Empire, its area was more than 30 hectares. In 1782, it was transformed into a town named Omsk within the Tobolsk Governorate. In 1785, the coat of arms of Omsk was approved.

Omsk became the center of management of the Siberian transport routes and the Siberian Cossack army, which not only guarded the South Siberian borders, but also made a huge contribution to the economic development of the steppe expanses of Kazakhstan, the annexation of Central Asia to the Russian Empire.

Omsk in the 19th century

The fire of 1819 destroyed almost half of the town including the archive and the magistrate of Omsk with all the first archival documents. Therefore information about the life of Omsk in the 18th - early 19th centuries is scarce and fragmentary. In 1825, the population of the town was about 9,000 people.

In 1829, the town’s development plan was approved. It was made by the famous Petersburg architect V.I. Geste, who took the city of St. Petersburg as a model with its wide avenues, huge neighborhoods, fountains, cast-iron bridges, and an abundance of green spaces.

The composition of the population of Omsk was not quite usual. In the middle of the 19th century, since Omsk was the center of the military and civil administration, the proportion of the military in the local population reached about 60%.

Fyodor Dostoevsky (one of the greatest psychological novelists in world literature), who served a term of hard labor in the Omsk prison in 1850-1854, in a letter to his brother gave Omsk the following description: “Omsk is a disgusting town. There are almost no trees. In summer, heat and wind with sand, in winter, a snowstorm. I have not seen nature. The town is dirty, military and highly depraved.”

By the second half of the 19th century, Omsk in its development outstripped many steppe towns and became not only an administrative, but also a commercial and industrial center. In 1861, in Omsk, there were 2,122 houses (31 stone houses), 34 factories and plants, about 20 thousand residents.

In 1892, the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway began, which gave a new impetus to the economy of Siberian towns and positively influenced Omsk. The development of the Trans-Siberian Railway caused an increase in the urban population due to migrants who came to work from the central part of the Russian Empire. According to the 1897 census, 37.3 thousand people lived in Omsk. The town had 14 streets with a total length of more than 140 km and 13 squares.

Omsk in the first half of the 20th century

The beginning of the 20th century was a time of great changes for Siberia. Mass peasant colonization caused a sharp leap in the development of the region’s economy, primarily its agrarian sector, and the Trans-Siberian Railway ensured the inclusion of the local economy in the system of the All-Russian and European markets.

Due to its favorable economic and geographical position - at the intersection of the railway and the Irtysh River, in the middle of a vast agricultural territory - Omsk quickly turned into a large transport, trade and industrial center of Western Siberia and Governor-Generalship of the Steppes (Eastern and Central Kazakhstan).

Wholesale trade in bread, butter and other agricultural products was concentrated here. Omsk also became one of the industrial, social and cultural centers of Western Siberia. By 1903, the city’s population grew to 60 thousand people. In 1914, it had about 134.8 thousand residents. Omsk became the most populous city in Siberia.

During the Civil War on the territory of the former Russian Empire, from June 1918 to November 1919, Omsk was the residence of the Supreme Ruler of Russia, Admiral Alexander Kolchak, who declared this city the capital of white Russia opposing red Russia of the Bolsheviks. Soviet power was finally established in the city in 1920.

In the summer of 1921, an event took place that had a decisive impact on the cultural and economic life of Omsk. The functions of the administrative center of Siberia were transferred from it to the city of Novonikolaevsk (future Novosibirsk). In 1934, Omsk became the administrative center of a separate Omsk Oblast.

Over the years of industrialization, Omsk became one of the largest centers for agricultural engineering in the USSR. The metal-working industry also developed at a rapid pace. In 1939, Omsk numbered more than 288 thousand people.

During the Second World War, about 200 industrial enterprises were evacuated to Omsk, as well as 60 hospitals, dozens of educational institutions, theaters, museums, and hundreds of thousands of refugees.

In the post-war years, new enterprises were put into operation in Omsk, all existing factories and plants were reconstructed and expanded. The industrial potential of the city was also strengthened by the Omsk oil refinery, the largest in the country. In connection with the rapid development of industry, especially petrochemical enterprises, the ecological situation deteriorated. The concentration of harmful substances in the air sharply increased. In 1964, the population of Omsk was about 702 thousand people.

In the 1970s-1980s, Omsk developed rapidly. In 1975, the city’s population exceeded 1 million. The most pressing problem was the ecological situation. Omsk was in the top 10 cities of Russia in terms of environmental pollution. Another problem that required an immediate solution was the development of passenger transport. The capacity of Omsk streets was exhausted, and therefore the construction of the subway became an urgent issue.

The economic crisis that gripped Russia after the collapse of the USSR had a negative impact on the economy of Omsk and the region as a whole. There was a significant decline in industrial production, construction volumes fell, and unemployment rose. A lot of organizations of the defense complex, research institutes, and design bureaus found themselves in a deep crisis without the state defense order.

The share of mechanical engineering and metalworking, light industry, and, to a lesser extent, chemical and petrochemical, forestry and woodworking industries decreased. At the same time, the share of the fuel industry, energy, and construction materials industry began to grow.

In the 2000s, Omsk again became one of the most important economic centers of Western Siberia with a developing mechanical engineering, petrochemical industry, various branches of the woodworking, construction industry, and a highly productive agro-industrial complex. In recent years, Omsk has also acquired the features of one of the largest Siberian centers of entrepreneurship and banking/financial activities.

Omsk - Features

Omsk is located in the south of the West Siberian Plain at the confluence of the Om River into the Irtysh, about 150 km from the border of Russia with Kazakhstan. About 60% of all residents of Omsk Oblast live in Omsk. The City Day of Omsk is celebrated on the first Saturday of August.

The city’s coat of arms is very similar to the first coat of arms of Omsk approved by Empress Catherine II in 1785. It depicts a part of the brick fortifications, which symbolizes the reason for its foundation as a fortress and the center of the Siberian defensive line.

Omsk belongs to the temperate climatic zone with a continental climate of the forest-steppe of the West Siberian belt. It is distinguished by an abundance of sunlight. The average air temperature in January is minus 16.3 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19.6 degrees Celsius. The highest wind speeds are observed in winter and spring, which is the reason for frequent snow and dust storms.

In the past, the ecological situation in Omsk was very unfavorable. Since 2011, the city’s environmental development rating has increased significantly. This was the result of large-scale modernization of many large industries (including the Omsk oil refinery). Today, road transport is the main source of air pollution in the city.

The level of pollution of the Omsk rivers - Irtysh and Om - remains consistently high. Swimming in them is prohibited. While industrial effluents are becoming more environmentally friendly, sewers are releasing waste products including diesel fuel and petroleum products into the rivers. Dust raised by dust storms is also a serious problem for the city as it contains a lot of harmful substances including lead.

The city’s industry is based on oil refining, petrochemistry, chemical industry, mechanical engineering (production of aerospace equipment, armored vehicles, agricultural equipment). Omsk is a major transport junction - the Trans-Siberian Railway runs through the city from west to east, and the navigable Irtysh River crosses it from south to north. Omsk Airport offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Surgut, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Salekhard, Kazan, Krasnodar, Sochi.

The unfinished subway of Omsk has become famous in Russia thanks to its only one fully built station. Its construction began back in 1992. However, due to funding problems, the completion of the first line was postponed numerous times. In 2019, it was finally decided to permanently stop construction. For local residents, because of the long wait for the completion of the construction, the Omsk metro symbolizes unrealizable hopes, they talk about it with irony.

In Omsk, there are practically no buildings higher than 50 meters, according to this parameter it is one of the lowest cities with a population of over one million. 130 architectural monuments are concentrated in the central part of the city, almost half of the total number.

Main Attractions of Omsk

Dormition Cathedral - the largest church in Omsk located in the very center of the city. The original church was built in 1891-1898. In 1935, it was completely destroyed. In 2005-2007, an exact copy of the building was restored in its original place. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in Omsk. At night, the building is illuminated and looks especially majestic. Tarskaya Street, 7.

Irtysh Embankment - the main walking street of Omsk with a picturesque view of the Irtysh River. Built in the middle of the 20th century, the embankment was reconstructed in the 2000s. You can walk along the alley on foot, ride rollerblades or a bike.

Merchant Batyushkin’s Mansion (1902). This architectural monument is located on the Irtysh Embankment. It is also known as the Kolchak’s House because Alexander Kolchak, the Supreme Ruler of Russia, lived in this building in 1919. One part of the building is occupied by the registry office of the Central District of Omsk. The Center for the Study of the History of the Russian Civil War is also open here. Irtyshskaya Naberezhnaya Street, 9.

Omsk State Museum of History and Local Lore - one of the oldest museums in Siberia and Russia founded in 1878. In total, this museum has over 200 thousand various objects of cultural, historical and artistic value. The museum is especially proud of such exhibits as the cast-iron figures of the Chinese lions Shi-Tzu, presented to the museum from China in 1895, as well as the skeleton of a woolly mammoth almost 3 meters high. Omsk Regional Museum of Fine Arts named after M.A. Vrubel - one of the largest museums of fine arts in Siberia. It has collections of foreign and Russian art from antiquity to the present day. In total, there are over 22 thousand works by painters, graphic artists and sculptors, as well as more than 1.5 thousand rare folios.

Walking through the exhibition halls, you can admire the canvases of Shishkin, Aivazovsky, Surikov, Repin, Serov, Vereshchagin. The exhibition of rare icons dating from the 17th-20th centuries is of constant interest among visitors, as well as a unique collection of jewelry made of precious metals found in the Scythian and Sarmatian burial mounds. Two buildings of the museum are located at Lenina Street 3 and 23.

In November 2019, a new exhibition was opened in a historical building at Muzeynaya Street, 4 - the exhibition of art of the 20th-21st centuries. The Hermitage-Siberia Center is located here too - the first representation of The State Hermitage Museum (the second-largest art museum in the world) beyond the Urals.

Museum of Kondraty Belov . The museum of this landscape painter born in Omsk can be found in a picturesque wooden house, which is considered one of the most interesting architectural monuments of Omsk. The exposition tells about the life and work of Kondraty Belov, as well as about the history of the building itself.

Plumber Stepanych Monument - an unusual sculpture located in the center of Omsk, which you can literally stumble upon while walking along Lenin Street between the houses #12 and #14. Leaning out of the hatch, the plumber is depicted as realistic and life-size as possible. It is among the most photographed monuments in Omsk. There is a similar sculpture in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

Lyuba Monument . This sculpture, located on the opposite side of Lenin Street from the monument to the plumber Stepanych, is especially loved by Omsk residents and tourists, who love to be photographed against its background.

This beauty in a lace dress with a neckline and a crinoline sitting on an openwork bench and reading a novel had a real prototype - Lyubov (diminutively Lyuba or Lyubasha) Gasford, the wife of the Governor-General of Siberia, who lived in Omsk in the 19th century and died at a young age due to illness. One of the streets of Omsk and the park are named in her memory. She is a local symbol of femininity and beauty.

Park of Culture and Rest named after the 30th anniversary of the Komsomol - a popular place for walks, recreation and entertainment of Omsk residents and tourists, which has retained “the spirit of the Soviet era” in its name. Today, on an area of 73 hectares, several zones have been organized, various types of recreation are presented. There are walking alleys, ponds, water activities, for example, riding on hydro-scooters.

The ice town is open in winter, the Return of the Dinosaurs exhibition - in summer. The “House Upside Down” exposition is also popular with tourists. This park is a place for mass festivities, city celebrations and events. Maslenitsa, Christmas, City Day, and other holidays are celebrated here. Maslennikova Street, 136.

Natural Park “Bird Harbor” - a specially protected area located on the path of bird migration in the central part of Omsk. During autumn flights, up to 3 thousand birds stop here for rest. It is a great place to enjoy nature, walk along the eco-trail, and observe the life of birds. The park is situated in the floodplain on the left bank of the Irtysh River next to the Victory Park on Yeniseyskaya Street.
