Key takeaways

  • Capital One’s travel portal offers a convenient way to book flights, hotels and cars with your card and/or Capital One miles.
  • The portal features price prediction technology, price alerts and a best price match guarantee to help users save money on their bookings.
  • While easy to use, cardholders likely get more value from their Capital One miles by transferring them to travel loyalty program partners.

Since launching in fall 2021, Capital One’s travel portal, aptly named Capital One Travel, has continued to innovate in building tools to help book and plan your next trip. The portal provides a seamless way to book trips, hotels and cars with your card and/or your Capital One miles. With access to exclusive hotel programs alongside trip pricing tools powered by Hopper, a well-known travel technology company, the portal can be a great asset when researching and booking your travel needs.

This guide will explain more about the portal, including how to use all the bells and whistles it offers, such as price prediction, price watch, price drop protections and the ability to cancel bookings for any reason. This guide will also help you make the most of your hard-earned rewards and cardholder benefits.

What is Capital One Travel?

Capital One Travel is the travel rewards portal that allows Capital One cardholders to book travel accommodations with their credit card rewards (and cash if needed). The portal is similar to offerings provided by American Express and Chase, among other issuers, to help cardholders more easily book their next trip and redeem their rewards. These branded travel portals act as a travel search engine to help cardholders redeem travel rewards and find better deals in the process.

Access the full slate of benefits at Capital One Travel by signing into your Capital One account. Once you decide on the travel to book, you can choose to pay for it using an eligible credit card or, if you have a bank of Capital One miles, you can redeem them directly for your booking.

Who can use the Capital One Travel Portal?

Any Capital One rewards cardholder is eligible to use the travel portal for their needs, even if your card earns cash back instead of Capital One miles . Many other issuers reserve their travel portals solely for cardholders with a premium travel card .

If you have one or more of the following Capital One credit cards , you’re eligible to use the travel portal and earn elevated rewards on certain travel booked through it:

Additional Capital One cards, such as the Capital One Quicksilver Student Rewards Credit Card , give cardholders access to the portal, but don’t offer elevated rewards on bookings.

Benefits of using Capital One Travel

Capital One has partnered with travel technology company Hopper to power the portal. Together, they have added features to help you book your trip with confidence and provide additional context to your searches. Here are some of the key benefits and offerings including within the travel portal:

Price prediction technology

When searching for flights in Capital One Travel, the tool will help you pay the best possible price by alerting you if the price available is likely to drop or increase. If they do not recommend purchasing at that moment, they offer an easy way to be alerted when the price does drop. With billions of flight price data points captured every day, the issuer claims that this technology can predict flight prices with 95 percent accuracy.

You can use the travel portal’s booking feature to place a reservation for a flight right away or wait for a better price. The price prediction tool will recommend the best time to book your flight, which could help you save up to 15 percent on your flight.

This feature will appear as a helpful information box when available for a given flight search. In the example below, when looking for a flight between New York and London in April 2024, it recommends waiting till closer to the travel date to book that ticket.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

Price alerts on flights

Maybe you aren’t quite ready to book yet, but want to start gathering info. Capital One allows you to monitor flights and can notify you via email when there is a price change. These alerts can help you decide when to book your ticket.

For a search for a December trip to Cape Town, South Africa the portal shared that you could save $187 per ticket by waiting and watching this trip for a price alert update.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

Price drop prediction

Once you buy a ticket via the portal after using the price prediction tool, Capital One will continue to monitor ticket prices for the next 10 days. If the ticket price drops below what you paid in that time span, Capital One will provide you with up to $50 in travel credit to cover the difference.

Best price match guarantee

Capital One will refund the difference for the price of a flight, hotel or rental car as travel credit if you find a better price on another site within 24 hours of booking with Capital One Travel. Submit a price match claim by contacting Capital One Travel via the help center or by calling them at 844-422-6922. Remember, the refund will come in the form of travel credits to use for future Capital One Travel bookings.

Price freeze

If you aren’t quite ready to book your flight, you can pay a small fee to “freeze” the flight price until you are ready to confirm the booking. Capital One will hold that price for you until the expiration date of your frozen price. Look for the expiration date before you complete your purchase.

For example, you could freeze the price on a ticket from Miami, Florida to Lima, Peru for $9 or 900 miles per person. Be sure to review the terms and timeline for your price freeze on the portal before freezing a price.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

Cancel for any reason coverage

This feature can provide some flexibility to your travel bookings as needed. For a fee, this option allows you to cancel your flight — with no penalties — up to a set time within 24 hours prior to your scheduled departure. Depending on the terms of your booking, you will have the option to receive a refund ranging from 70 percent to 100 percent of your flight’s costs.

How to book with Capital One Travel

Here’s how to book flights, hotels and car rentals through the travel portal:

Book flights in the Capital One travel portal

To book a flight from the portal, select the Flights option from the portal homepage. From there, you can enter the cities you wish to travel between and fill out all the necessary information.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

As you go to select your travel date(s), the portal will provide a helpful color-coded guide alerting you of the price variances by day. If you’ve got some flexibility, you can choose from different pricing categories to get lower fares:

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

You can also filter your results by airline, price, number of stops, time, flight number and other preferences.

Once you arrive at a ticket you’d like to book, you can follow the prompts to choose the fare options you want. Right before checking out, you’ll see the option to freeze your fare until you are ready to book, which you can pay for in miles or cash. If you don’t want to freeze your fare, you can continue to the checkout where you’ll choose your seat and how you want to pay.

Book hotels in the Capital One Travel portal

The process of booking hotel accommodations is similar to booking airfare; simply search for hotels by location and date. From there, you can filter properties for specific amenities, such as parking or breakfast. The search results page will show you a map with hotel locations, price per night and the total price. The portal also provides the TripAdvisor rating of that particular property as well.

Book car rentals in the Capital One Travel portal

You can also book a rental car through the Capital One portal. Once you’ve entered your desired pickup and dropoff locations, you can go through the options to narrow them down based on the rental company, cost or your specific needs.

Should you book travel through Capital One Travel?

Whether you should book travel via the Capital One Travel portal depends on your goals and needs, but there are some common pros and cons.

Pros of booking with Capital One Travel

  • Price freeze . The price freeze feature is an affordable way to hold on to a potential booking while considering your options. This can be a great way to save time and money when planning your next trip.
  • Additional bonus points . Booking through the Capital One travel portal with an eligible card can provide additional bonus Capital One miles, helping you accrue more points to redeem towards future travel.
  • Price match guarantee . With the price match guarantee, you can feel confident knowing that if the price drops, you can receive credits to cover the price difference.

Cons of booking with Capital One Travel

  • Not all flights featured . Capital One Travel may not have access to all possible flights. For example, Southwest flights will not be viewable in the portal, so you may need to review other sites in addition to the portal to find the best flight for your needs.
  • Limited benefits with loyalty programs . Hotels usually require you to book directly with them to enjoy elite perks. As a result, booking through the portal may make you ineligible for certain perks if you are a member of a hotel or rental car loyalty program. Be sure to check their rules before completing your booking.
  • May not earn loyalty rewards. Usually hotels, and sometimes airlines, won’t award loyalty points for bookings made through third-party travel portals.
  • Lack of travel packages . The travel portal currently does not allow cardholders to book travel packages, though you can group different types of travel accommodations in one itinerary and pay for them at the same time.

The portal can be a helpful component of your travel booking process. But even if Capital One Travel becomes your go-to for booking travel, don’t forget to check other booking options to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Other options for redeeming your Capital One miles

In addition to the travel portal, Capital One offers cardholders additional ways to redeem their miles. Additional options include:

Transfer miles to travel partners

It can be advantageous to transfer your miles to one of Capital One’s transfer partners . This option may save money if your miles pick up more value upon transfer. In fact, Capital One miles are worth just 1 cent each when redeemed through the portal or for statement credit to cover a travel purchase; however, they’re worth an average of 1.7 each when transferred to a high-value travel partner, according to Bankrate’s latest valuations.

Most partners allow transfers at a 1:1 ratio, but Capital One sometimes runs promotions in which you can transfer miles and receive a bonus with the transfer partner. For instance, at the time of publishing, cardholders could receive 1,300 Virgin Points for every 1,000 Capital One miles transferred.

Screenshot provided by Will Esslifie

To complete a transfer, you will need to link your loyalty program account to your Capital One account. Once you have your member number, you can plug it into the miles transfer screen, and Capital One will move your miles to the loyalty program of your choice. The transfer process may be immediate or could take a few hours. When the miles appear in your loyalty membership account, you can then book your travel directly through the travel brand where you transferred your points.

Cover past travel purchases

You can use your Capital One miles to cover travel purchases up to 90 days old. Although there’s no guarantee exactly how your travel purchases will be coded, generally, Capital One miles will cover travel-related expenses such as airfare, hotel stays, train tickets, car rentals, limousine services, bus tickets, cruises, taxis, travel agents and timeshares.

The bottom line

The Capital One Travel portal can be a great way to book your next trip. With its price prediction technology, price freezes and other tools designed to make trip planning a breeze, it’s a useful benefit accessible to Capital One rewards cardholders.

Keep in mind that the most lucrative travel rewards strategies, however, usually involve more than one travel rewards currency, so check out other travel rewards cards if you’re on a journey to maximize your credit card rewards.

The highs and lows of using Capital One Travel to book flights while abroad

Katie Genter

It can be appealing to book flights through credit card travel portals . After all, some cards offer significant category bonuses to reward cardholders for using their travel portal.

However, I typically avoid booking flights through online travel agencies and credit card travel portals because of the hassle I've faced in the past when needing to change or cancel my flight .

Instead, I usually book directly with the airline or one of the airline's codeshare partners. After all, I can still earn 3 points per dollar spent (on up to $150,000 spent in combined purchases in select categories each account anniversary year) and get solid travel protections when using my Ink Business Preferred Credit Card to book travel.

But on a recent trip, it proved impossible to book intra-India flights directly with Indian low-cost carriers IndiGo, AirAsia India and Go First. So, here's my story about the highs and lows of using Capital One Travel to book my intra-India flights.

Sign up for our daily newsletter for more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox.

Booking flights through the Capital One Travel portal

report international travel capital one

I couldn't book intra-India flights with Indian low-cost carriers IndiGo, AirAsia India and Go First through their websites due to website glitches and security measures that prevented me from using my U.S.-issued credit cards.

As I watched fares increase, I decided the best option would be to book through an online travel agency or credit card travel portal.

During this trip, I was working toward meeting the minimum spending requirements to earn the sign-up bonus on my new Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card . So, I headed to the Capital One Travel portal to see what flights it offered and whether there was a large markup compared to booking directly.

Fares were similar to booking directly for flights from Bengaluru to Jaipur (IndiGo for $127 per person), Jaipur to Chennai (AirAsia India for $97 per person) and Chennai to Bengaluru (IndiGo for $57 per person). So I went ahead and booked flights for my husband and me through the Capital One Travel portal.

Since I used my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card to book through the Capital One Travel portal, I earned 5 miles per dollar spent on these flights.

Based on TPG's valuations , the 2,810 miles I earned by booking these flights through the Capital One Travel portal are worth $52.

Getting refunds when prices dropped

One benefit of booking through the Capital One Travel portal with the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is price drop protection . For each of our intra-India flights, Capital One Travel checked for price drops for 10 days after booking.

report international travel capital one

This benefit would refund us up to $50 per person per flight if the price dropped — and the price dropped for two of our flights.

We'd booked an IndiGo flight from Bengaluru to Jaipur for $127 per person less than five days before departure. Then, Capital One Travel sent me the following email one day before departure, notifying me I'd get a $25.81 refund (about $13 per person).

report international travel capital one

Then, about 10 days after we purchased a flight from Chennai to Bangaluru for $57 per person, I got an email from Capital One Travel stating I'd get a refund of $6 per person for this flight due to a price drop.

While modest, these refunds will make me consider booking future trips through Capital One Travel if I think a price drop in the 10 days after booking is likely. In particular, the price drop protection can be particularly useful when booking last-minute flights , as I did in India.

No ability to reserve seats for some flights

report international travel capital one

One benefit of booking directly with low-cost airlines is purchasing all the add-ons you want during booking (which is usually when these add-ons are the least expensive). Often, you can even purchase a package that offers multiple items for less than you'd pay a la carte.

report international travel capital one

But I couldn't purchase any of the AirAsia India or IndiGo packages when booking through Capital One Travel. And I couldn't select a seat through Capital One Travel, even by paying to do so.

report international travel capital one

So after booking our flights through the Capital One Travel portal, I used our IndiGo and AirAsia India confirmation numbers to access our bookings online and attempt to purchase seats.

I successfully purchased two "premium pack" packages for our AirAsia India booking that included seat selection and a hot meal for 500 Indian rupees (about $6) each. Interestingly, my U.S.-issued credit card worked fine for this online transaction.

report international travel capital one

But for our IndiGo flights, the website wouldn't accept any of the U.S.-issued credit cards I tried. So the airline automatically assigned us seats apart for both flights. One flight was empty, so we could use a kiosk at the airport after checking in to change our seats. But for our other two IndiGo flights (yes, other two — as you'll see below, we never got to fly AirAsia India), the cabins were relatively full, so there wasn't an opportunity to change seats at the airport.

Hopefully, IndiGo will begin accepting U.S.-issued credit cards online for seat selection and other add-ons as it sees more U.S. visitors through its codeshare flights with American Airlines .

No support for a canceled flight

report international travel capital one

The airline canceled one of the three intra-India flights we'd booked through Capital One Travel — the AirAsia India flight from Jaipur to Chennai — about four days before departure. I got the following email from AirAsia India:

report international travel capital one

AirAsia India only operates one nonstop flight daily from Jaipur to Chennai and had canceled this flight for several days. AirAsia India's only other option on our date was a two-stop routing with a much longer duration. Meanwhile, the only other nonstop flight from Jaipur to Chennai on our date — operated by IndiGo — was now more expensive.

The airline will often force you to work with your online travel agency when it cancels your flight. However, a Capital One Travel phone agent said Capital One Travel only sells the flights and that we'd need to work with the airline to get a refund or rebook.

Thankfully, AirAsia India refunded our fare, meal and seat packages after we requested it do so. But know that in some cases, Capital One Travel can't do anything with your flight booking after it sells it.

Bottom line

Although I usually avoid booking through online travel agencies and credit card portals, doing so was the best option during a recent trip to India. I earned 5 miles per dollar spent on my bookings and got access to Capital One's price drop protection . The price drop protection is only for the first 10 days after booking, but it worked excellently for my last-minute flights.

Capital One Travel saved the day by allowing me to book flights when the airlines' websites either didn't work or wouldn't accept my U.S.-issued credit cards. But I couldn't select a seat during booking and it proved impossible to pay for IndiGo seats after booking.

Also, remember that when things go wrong, you may have to reach out to the airline directly to be rebooked or get a refund. And depending on the airline, this could be a painstaking process.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

Earn Points With Your Loyalty Program

Flights booked through Capital One Travel are counted as paid tickets . This is true whether you use your Capital One miles for a redemption or use cash. Because of this, you’ll be able to earn frequent flyer miles on any flights that you book. Signing up is free and easy — there’s no reason for you to miss out on these miles!

The same can’t be said of hotel programs. Nearly all hotel chains will skip out on benefits if you don’t book your stay directly with the hotel . Not only will you miss out on your perks, but you’ll also lose the ability to earn elite night credits for your stays, which can be a real blow if you’re trying to earn elite status. Keep this in mind when you’re using Capital One Travel for hotel bookings.

Ease of Use

If you’re not a huge points and miles geek, it can make sense for you to book with Capital One Travel. This is because it’s simple; you simply log in, look for the flights/hotels/rental cars that you need, and then book. You won’t have to sift through endless programs trying to find the best rates, and it’s especially easy when you’re looking to redeem your Capital One miles. They’ll always be worth 1 cent each when used for travel via Capital One Travel , which is a solid redemption. It’s not the best, however, as you’ll see later on.

Price Match Guarantee

In a bid for your business, Capital One offers a price match guarantee on all of its hotel bookings . If you find a publicly available price within 24 hours that is better than the one you’ve booked, Capital One will match it.

Capital One also offers price-drop protection for its flights . If the Capital One price prediction tool recommends you purchase a flight and you do, the same tool will automatically keep monitoring the cost of the flight. If prices drop again, you’ll get a refund on some or all of the price difference.

Bottom Line: There are a lot of reasons to book with Capital One Travel, though you’ll want to be wary of limitations that arise from booking with a third party.

United Polaris

We value points and miles according to a variety of factors, including how easy they are to use and redeem. Although you can use your Capital One miles for travel on Capital One Travel, there are plenty of other ways they can be redeemed.

The most valuable use of your miles occurs when you transfer them to any one of Capital One’s hotel and airline partners. In these cases, you can get outsized value for every mile. This is why we consider Capital One miles to be worth 1.8 cents each — nearly double the amount you’ll get when redeeming them within Capital One Travel.

You need to be a Capital One cardholder in to access Capital One Travel . Once on the page, you’ll log in to your account. After logging in, you’ll be brought to the portal’s home page:

Capital One homepage

From here, you can choose to book flights, hotels, or rental cars.

Booking a flight through Capital One Travel is fairly intuitive. After you log in and reach the landing page, you’ll want to select Flights in the toolbar up top:

Capital One homepage

This will bring you to the search page for flights. You’ll want to input all your information, including departure airport, destination, and dates of travel:

Capital One flights

Like Google Flights , Capital One Travel will give you an estimation of price within a calendar feature:

Capital One flight calendar

Unlike Google Flights, however, Capital One has partnered with the booking site Hopper to tell you when you should book. You’ll be presented with detailed information regarding price predictions :

Capital One price prediction

As you can see in the screenshot above, you have the option to freeze your price or set a price watch alert. If you’re looking to book immediately, you’ll want to scroll down, where Capital One will give you a list of results:

Capital One flight results

When selecting a flight, Capital One Travel will also give you a breakdown of information and the ability to book economy or first class tickets:

Capital One flight amenities

Once you’ve selected your outbound flight, you’ll pick the return. If booking a one-way, you’ll be taken to the checkout page.

Hot Tip: Capital One’s price drop protection automatically monitors the cost of flights you purchase and refunds you if prices fall.

As is normal with checkout pages, you’ll need to fill in your passenger information and credit card information. You can also select seats and choose whether or not you’d like to redeem miles. Capital One will give you 1 cent per point of value when using your miles through Capital One Travel . While this isn’t terrible, there are much better uses of those miles — such as transferring to a partner and booking a reward seat.

Capital One redeem miles flights

Once you’ve input all your info, you’ll hit Confirm and Book . That’s it!

Bottom Line: Booking flights through Capital One Travel is both intuitive and easy. Plus, you’ll be able to earn frequent flyer points on your booking.

If you’re looking to book a hotel through Capital One Travel, the process is simple. As before, you’ll start by logging into your account. Once you’ve hit Capital One Travel’s landing page, you’ll select Hotels in the top toolbar:

Capital One hotels

You’ll be taken to Capital One’s hotel search bar, where you can put in your travel destination and dates:

Capital One hotel search

Once you select Search Hotels , you’ll be taken to a results page featuring an interactive map:

Capital One hotel results

Along with filtering by rating and price, Capital One offers a variety of ways to narrow down your search:

Capital One hotel filters

As we mentioned above, Capital One Travel offers a hotel price match guarantee , which means you won’t find cheaper prices elsewhere. If you do happen to stumble across one on a publicly available site within 24 hours of booking, you can submit a price match request and, if approved, Capital One Travel will drop the cost down to the rate you’ve found.

Selecting a hotel from the search results will open a new tab where you can alter your information:

Capital One hotel booking

Scrolling down, you’ll be able to select the room type you prefer:

Capital One room type

Once you’ve picked your room, you’ll be taken to the checkout page where you’ll fill out your traveler and payment information. You can also choose to use your Capital One miles for a value of 1 cent per point towards your booking:

Capital One hotel checkout

Hot Tip: Be aware that booking hotels through Capital One Travel counts as a third-party booking — which means you won’t receive any elite status benefits or credit towards earning elite status when booking this way.

Once everything is filled in, you simply need to select Confirm and Book .

Just as with flights and hotels, you’ll log in to your account. From the landing page, you’ll select Car Rentals from the top toolbar:

Capital One rental cars

You’ll be taken to the rental car search page where you can enter your information, including dates of travel and location:

Capital One rental car search

Once you’ve hit Search Cars , you’ll be taken to the results page:

Capital One rental car results

You can choose from a variety of filters, including the rental car company you’ll be booking, what type of car you prefer, and the cancellation policy of your booking. After picking the car you’d like to reserve, you’ll have the chance to review your booking:

Capital One rental car review

If everything is correct, you’ll hit Reserve , which will take you to the checkout page where you can enter driver information and your method of payment:

Capital One rental car checkout

As with hotels and flights, you can apply your Capital One miles to your rental car booking at a rate of 1 cent each. Again, there are better ways to use your miles, which we’ll discuss below.

Hot Tip: Check out our handy guide on how to save money on car rentals , including options with points, upgrades, cash savings, and more!

How Do the Prices Compare to Other Sites?

Is it actually worth it to book through Capital One Travel rather than other sites? How do the prices compare? Let’s take a look.

Here’s a flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to London (LHR) in mid-May 2022:

Capital One LAX flight

Interestingly, Capital One Travel notes that this isn’t the best time to book. The cheapest options available are $715, and they’re all nonstop. However, Google Flights comes back with very different results:

Google Flights LAX flight

Not only does Google suggest that prices are currently low, but it also returns an option that is nearly $200 less than what Capital One Travel is offering . A closer look reveals that although Capital One Travel has the outbound leg available of this cheap flight for $736 roundtrip, it doesn’t offer the same returns. Here’s what’s available from Google:

Google Flights LAX LHR

Meanwhile, here are the options you can get on Capital One:

Capital One LAX LHR

Bottom Line: While Capital One allows you to book flights through its Capital One Travel portal, its prices aren’t always competitive with other offerings. Make sure to check a few other websites for flights to ensure you’re getting the best deal.

So how do hotels on Capital One fare when compared to other booking options? This is especially pertinent as Capital One has its own price guarantee.

Here’s a night at the all-inclusive  Secrets the Vine Cancun in early June from Hotels.com :

Hotels.com Cancun hotel

Booking with Hotels.com will earn you 1 stamp towards a free night stay . After 10 stamps you’ll get a free night, which can be especially valuable when booking costly stays.

And here are the results from Priceline , an online travel agency:

Priceline Cancun hotel

Bookings with both Priceline and Hotels.com can also be stacked with shopping portals . Using Rakuten with Priceline, for example, will earn you 5% back on your booking; this can either come in the form of $25.35 or 2,535 American Express Membership Rewards .

Booking Directly

Here’s how much it costs when booking directly with the hotel:

Secrets hotel Cancun

Secrets the Vine Cancun is a member of AMR Resorts , which was recently purchased by Hyatt. Although you can’t earn or redeem points with the property until later in 2022, Hyatt is offering a promotion for its cardholders for many new all-inclusive properties, including this one. Now through May 15, 2022, eligible cardholders will receive 10 points per $1 spent at these hotels.

This means that booking and paying with your The World of Hyatt Credit Card will earn you 5,070 World of Hyatt points. We value World of Hyatt points at 1.5 cents each, which means you’ll be getting $76.05 worth of points back on this booking.

Capital One Travel

Finally, here’s the rate within Capital One Travel:

Capital One Cancun hotel

With the 3 other sites we compared charging $507, Capital One Travel is a few dollars cheaper. But saving $15 doesn’t match the benefits other options are providing, like Hotels.com’s $200 resort credit.

There is, however, one case where booking via Capital One Travel is your best option. First, you won’t want to use Capital One Travel unless you don’t care about elite status — as we’ve mentioned above — so boutique properties can be a good option to book .

Second, as we mentioned above, those who hold the Capital One Venture X card earn 10 miles per $1 spent on hotels booked through Capital One Travel. In this situation, you’d earn 4,915 Capital One miles on your booking. We value Capital One miles at 1.8 cents each, which means you’ll earn  $88.47 worth of miles . All in, you’ll net $403.53, which wins out compared to most other options.

How good are rental car prices compared across multiple sites? The results are less exciting. Here’s what a 5-day rental from Los Angeles looks like at Capital One Travel:

Capital One car rental

RentalCars.com offers nearly the same price:

Rentalcars.com car rental

AutoSlash, meanwhile, saves you a full $65 on the cheapest rental car:

Autoslash car rental

Bottom Line: The Capital One Venture X card offers 10 miles per $1 on rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and it comes with some nice car rental insurance coverage too.

Of course, redeeming your miles through Capital One Travel is just one way that they can be used. There is a multitude of uses for those miles.

Transfer to Travel Partners

Nearly always, the best use of your Capital One miles comes from transferring to hotel and airline partners. Capital One has many transfer partners from which to choose:

Hot Tip: Check out our guide on the best ways to redeem Capital One miles for max value .

Cover Travel Purchases

Just as when using your miles at Capital One Travel, Capital One will allow you to redeem your miles for recent travel purchases at a rate of 1 cent each .

Redeem for Cash-back

You can redeem your Capital One miles for cash-back, but this is a terrible use of miles. Capital One will only give you 0.5 cents of value per mile when redeeming to cash.

Get Gift Cards

There are a variety of gift cards available using your Capital One miles, but these still aren’t a great redemption. Your value will vary — and can even be as high as 1 cent per mile , but transferring to other partners will still give you better value.

Shop With Amazon

You can use your miles on a linked Capital One card, which will give you a value of 0.8 cents per mile .

Pay With PayPal

Paying with your Capital One miles through PayPal will net you 1 cent per mile , just the same as redeeming your miles within Capital One Travel.

Bottom Line: You can redeem your Capital One miles in a variety of ways, but only transferring them to hotel and airline partners will grant you more than 1 cent per mile in value.

Capital One Travel is robust — and can be a good option for eligible cardholders who aren’t concerned about elite status. However, you’ll find better value for your miles when transferring to one of Capital One’s many travel partners. Regardless, you can find good deals within the travel portal, and the best price guarantee, combined with price drop protection, can make this portal tempting for many travelers.

Global Entry renewal: A how-to guide

April 18, 2024 | 4 min read

If you’ve ever traveled abroad, you may be familiar with the Global Entry Program. It’s a Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) designed to get international travelers through airport customs checkpoints faster when they reenter the U.S.

Learn how to renew your Global Entry membership before it expires, how long renewal lasts and more.

Key takeaways

  • Global Entry is a TTP administered by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
  • Membership in Global Entry lasts for five years; renewal extends it for another five years.
  • You can renew your membership starting one year before it expires.
  • Capital One Venture and Venture X cardholders can receive up to a $100 statement credit toward their Global Entry renewal.*

Earn 75,000 bonus miles

Redeem your miles for flights, vacation rentals and more. Terms apply.

What is Global Entry?

Global Entry is a TTP run by CBP. The program is designed to help expedite airport customs screening for travelers reentering the U.S. after traveling abroad.

Benefits of Global Entry include helping members reduce wait times at security checkpoints and navigate airports more easily .

Global Entry membership is open to U.S. citizens, legal permanent U.S. residents, Mexican nationals, citizens of certain other countries and more. It’s available at dozens of airports in the U.S. and abroad.

Global Entry renewal requirements

Here are things to know about renewing your Global Entry membership.

  • You can renew your membership starting one year before it expires. And if you submit a renewal application before your membership expires, you can use the program’s benefits for up to 24 months after the expiration date.
  • You’ll need to submit a renewal application. You can complete your Global Entry renewal application and pay your renewal fee on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website.
  • You may need to attend an in-person interview. An interview may be required once your renewal has been conditionally approved. But since this interview isn’t always necessary, be sure to check your account periodically for updates on next steps.

How to renew Global Entry

Here are specifics on the Global Entry renewal process.

1. Fill out the Global Entry renewal application

You can fill out your renewal application on the DHS website. Here are the steps:

  • Sign in to your account on the TTP portal. If you don’t already have an account, you’ll be directed to create one.
  • Select the option for Global Entry renewal and follow the prompts.
  • Submit your renewal application.

2. Pay the Global Entry renewal fee

Once you’ve submitted your renewal application on the TTP portal, simply follow the prompts to pay your application fee.

When it comes to paying the renewal fee, there’s good news: Some travel credit card issuers reimburse cardholders for the fee. In fact, Capital One reimburses Venture and Venture X cardholders up to $100 for Global Entry fees every four years.

3. Complete your Global Entry renewal interview, if required

When you first apply for membership, you’ll typically be required to attend an in-person Global Entry interview with a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer. But an interview isn’t always required for renewal.

If you’re asked to attend a renewal interview, you can schedule it at a Global Entry enrollment center or at a major airport to coincide with your travel plans.

Global Entry renewal FAQ

Here are commonly asked questions about renewing Global Entry membership.

Can I renew my Global Entry pass online?

Yes. You can fill out your renewal application on the DHS website’s TTP portal.

How long after Global Entry expires can you renew?

You can typically renew Global Entry starting one year before your membership expiration date. If you complete a renewal application before your membership expires, you can continue using Global Entry benefits for up to 24 months.

Does Global Entry renewal require an interview?

Not always. But if you’re asked to attend an interview, you can schedule it at a Global Entry enrollment center. A program known as Enrollment on Arrival also allows you to schedule your interview at a major airport to coincide with your travel plans.

Global Entry renewal in a nutshell

Global Entry is one of several U.S. government TTPs. Its goal is to help travelers get through customs screening faster when they land in U.S. airports after traveling abroad.

Capital One Venture and Venture X cardholders can receive up to a $100 statement credit toward their application fee or renewal fee every four years.

Capital One Travel Portal Issues

It seems like banks have wanted to become more and more like travel agents. Pretty much all the major banks have launched their own travel portals over the last few years. They even give huge multiples to use their bank’s cards in the travel portal #synergy. Heck, Chase is even doubling down in their effort to become a travel behemoth . It looks like Capital One has been on the same wavelength of thinking. Look no further then when they launched the Capital One Venture X . Ever notice how much their new travel portal played a role with the card? They give you a travel credit and anniversary points that can only be used in their portal. They also offer up to 10X earning when you book through their portal, which seems pretty amazing. The problem is that this isn’t the banks’ expertise so they are not adept at fixing issues that come up. A reader reached out to me with some Capital One travel portal issues and asked me to share her story. I have heard of other grumblings here and there about the Cap One portal too (all bank travel portals really).

Reader’s Experience With Capital Travel Portal Issues

I will share reader D’s experience with their recent Capital One portal booking. It appears that there was an issue on Capital One’s back end when she booked her trip. Sadly, it wasn’t caught until it was too late. To make matters worse, Capital One struggled to come up with a reasonable solution once the issue was discovered. This led to over 10 hours on the phone, all while traveling internationally, for reader D. That is how a vacation gets ruined right there!

Capital One Travel Portal Issues

Capital One Travel Portal Booking

Reader D booked a roundtrip flight from Chicago to Warsaw, Poland in first or business class via the Capital One travel portal. She had used her newly minted Capital One Venture X card to book the flight for the card’s 5X earning on flights when using the Cap One portal. This was a way for her to burn her $300 yearly travel credit too. Using the portal is a requirement for this yearly perk, as well as the anniversary gift of 10,000 points. That means you need to use Capital One’s travel portal in order to maximize the card’s perks and offset the $395 annual fee.

Reader D had thought she got a great deal on the airfare ($1584.69) for a mixed cabin flight. She would have first / business class on the long leg of the flight over the pond and then switch to economy for intra-Europe flight. Things didn’t work out that way though. She was met with a surprise when she went to check in for the flight out of Chicago. United showed that they were flying in Premium Plus instead of business class. Capital One was showing first / business class when she booked the ticket but United’s system was showing them booked in Premium Plus. Here are some screen shots of the return flight showing the discrepancy (she didn’t have access to the original flight any longer).

What the Capital One booking showed her:

Capital One Travel Portal Issues

What her United account showed when checking there:

Capital One Travel Portal Issues

At the airport the gate agent told her she would have to pay $1398 to upgrade to business class. United was unwilling to do anything since the flight was not booked directly with them. She paid it and got on the flight (risky), figuring she would straighten it out with Capital One upon arrival.

Lessons To Be Learned

There are a couple of things I want to point out here that we can all learn from. First off, check your tickets after booking, especially if booking via a third party. Verify that the ticket matches the same class, flight times, equipment etc. as it did when you booked it. It is much less stressful to deal with these issues prior to your trip versus while you are on it. I know we all get lazy with this, myself included, since it is right 99% of the time. Still check!

Secondly, remember that when you use a travel portal to book a flight or hotel you are not going to get any assistance from the hotel or airline. It is like booking via Expedia etc. They have to give these bank travel portals a cut of the money too, so they aren’t going to bend over backwards to fix things for you.

Trying To Get The Capital One Travel Portal Issue Corrected

Upon getting to Warsaw reader D went to work. It was a bit tricky since she needed to fight for her $1398 upgrade charge at the airport and get moved into business class for the flight home. The was a two headed beast that needed to be slayed.

She started calling and messaging Capital One to get a resolution. She got bounced around multiple call centers and spoke to numerous supervisors. Some would tell her they would give her the credit for the flight over but would never put it in writing or send an email. Reader D figured they would be able to see the booking discrepancy and get with United to book them into the proper class of service for the flight home. It was anything but that simple.

She was getting the run around right and left, being told there were no more business class seats on the flight even though they still showed space online. Including on Capital One’s own travel portal. At one point she was told supervisors weren’t available until the morning, 9AM ET. Around and around it went.

Capital One Travel Portal Issues

Finally, Victory!

She finally saw light at the end of the tunnel, an agent found business space she could be booked into. That was until he came back 10 minutes later saying the system wouldn’t let him book it. Capital One kept saying that a refund was the only option ($1000) and she would have to fly premium economy home. Most would have given up here, but not D!

After some more back and forth they kept insisting on just refunding the cash and points used for the flight. She kept refusing and feeding them different flights showing space. Then, finally, they booked her on Lufthansa business class connecting through Munich. She also was refunded the $1398 for the upgrade at the airport for her flight to Poland.

Capital One Travel Portal Issues: Final Thoughts

I am glad it all ended up working out for reader D in the end. But, wow, did it take a lot of effort. The last thing I want to do on vacation is spend 10+ stressful hours on hold, talking to customer service reps / supervisors and messaging back and forth non stop. Throw in the fact that she was overseas, with different hours and added hoops of getting around international calling costs etc., on top of it.

I have always been one to say, I’ll suck it up now and look for compensation / resolution later so I can focus on enjoying the trip. I can say, without a doubt, that wouldn’t have offered as good as a solution as reader D got here. It would have likely meant flying premium economy and just getting a $1,000 courtesy credit when it was all said and done. Paying cash for the upgrade at the airport was a risk too. They may have refused to credit the difference there, even with proof of the discrepancy.

This right here is a big reason why I refuse to use travel portals. I’ll cash out the points and book direct instead . When everything runs smoothly they are perfectly fine, but, when you run into issues having another cook in the kitchen makes things much more difficult. The airlines, or hotels, and the travel portal company are not going to work together to fix something for you. So be aware of that when you book via this route, and be prepared to fight to the death when an issue arises. Just like reader D had to.

I paid for a premium economy flight through Capital One Venture X’s travel portal and now I wish that I had not. The experience could not have been worse. I’m in an economy seat for 90% of the flight (it’s to India) and only get the Premium Economy class seat for the India portion of the trip. So I don’t get the upgrade in food and don’t get the upgrade in service that I paid for. What’s worse, C1VX is offering a lowball compensation. It’s all so ridiculous. I’ve spent a good amount of time on hold only to learn that they couldn’t care less. Hmm.

I’m cancelling my card. In July I booked a flight to catch a cruise in November. Flights have been changed almost weekly, ticket name details don’t match skymiles account, I can’t choose seats and when I called Delta for help, they said call the travel agent you used: Hopper. I didn’t know Cap1 went through Hopper, that would’ve changed my decision. I hope I don’t miss my cruise!!

[…] Reader’s Horribly Frustrating Experience With The Capital One Travel Portal. – Capital One, Amex, Chase, and Citi all entice cardholders to book travel through their travel portals with huge rewards and other benefits. While this may seem like a good idea when things go well, it can create a nightmare when something goes wrong. Who do you call, who’s responsible for fixing the problem, etc.? […]

Yeah, I’m getting rid of my CapitalOne card. They recently changed their travel agent partner to Hopper, and so any issues that cropped up before Sept 2022 gets the run around. The travel agency claims it’s not their issue because they weren’t the agency that ticketed the travel. Th airline also feigns helplessness by claiming that the travel agency is responsible.

I’m having a terrible experience with the C1 travel portal as well. It’s showing a flight for Bali that they don’t actually have. Yet they still sold me price lock-in and still posted the pending payment to my card. I called C1 and the customer service rep yelled at me then hung up. Looks like I have to buy the ticket directly from the airline. Venture X is a scam.

Well, I’m using Cap1 for airfare – did alright on current United trip But never again for Hotel. Booked an IPrefer hotel and when I called hotel for room preferences the person said they could not even leave notes on my reservation. Plus I show up and they assigned me the worse room in my category and the desk clerk claimed all suites the same – doesn’t even know his hotel. Cap1 will hear from me.

You already provided a solution in “Lessons to be Learned”. I always check my bookings directlly even when booking via a 3rd. party. For flights I always log in to the airline site and then check and/or re-assign my seats. That alone done in advance would have alerted the person that there was an issue.

Also I’ve seen this before with some OTA’s not distinguishing between PE and Business and calling it Premium and assuming it’s First or Business. Again a quick check with the airline or even Seat Guru if the seats were assigned would have identified the issue.

The only travel portal that I will use for airline tickets is Amex and only for AA flights since they normally have a discount for using the Amex card and I am EVP at AA so they can always help if there is something wrong. For the $300 credit for Capital One I am using for hotels

That makes sense. With the stacking the juice would be worth the squeeze there. That would be my plan too for Cap One – hotels or car rentals – to burn the credit.

Hotels but not car rentals. Reviews have shown hotel rates are good but car rental search doesn’t do well. I usually use hotels.com bc of the great rewards program and ability to buy gift cards at a discount, but Cap1 has a wider selection and often better prices, plus the 10x points makes it about equal to my hotels.com rewards (which may get nixed next year anyway). Car rentals make no sense; I always wind up rebooking based on AutoSlash, which would mean having to cancel my original Cap1 car booking anyway.

Sad to hear their prices are so much higher

Hi Mark: Is that the approach you take with American Express pay with points as well (e.g., you’d rather cash out the points and book directly)? I ask because that 35% points back with the Platinum Business often means a far better rate than booking with the airlines miles directly.

I haven’t really dabbled with Amex myself. I have heard some horror stories there too but the difference in value (1.1 vs 1.5) would probably make it worth it for me if the cost was high enough. I wouldn’t do it if the flight is iffy though

This is a terrible story. Not blaming the reader at all but there was a telltale sign of a likely problem. For transatlantic flights with a connecting European flight, premium economy on long haul is almost always paired with economy shorthaul. And business almost always pairs to business class on short haul. Given business class seats are same as economy on shorthaul flights, there is no practical capacity constraint on number of short haul business seats. all the European airlines are happy to sell as many shorthaul business class connections as they can. So seeing shorthaul economy on itinerary was a potential red flag that business class long haul was not ticketed.

Part of the benefit with Capital One is you get Hertz Presidential Circle. When I book thru that it cost more than when my wife books it as she is a gold member. We tried it multiple times. President Circle is a waste for C1.

That is sad to hear.

I use autoslash.com. Depending on the market you are renting in, you will IME, often see Hertz with the best price, via Priceline. When I then book on Priceline, using the autoslash link, I just add my Hertz Gold Rewards # to my Priceline booking. You will then be able to see your Hertz reservation in your Gold Rewards account, and get the relevant benefits for President’s Circle.

“ This right here is a big reason why I refuse to use travel portals. I’ll cash out the points and book direct instead.”

There’s no way to cash out the $300 VentureX credit (which is why your reader was in this situation). You’re saying this is a card you wouldn’t get because you’re forced to use a travel portal? Or that you would forfeit $300 in value (this arguably makes the VentureX a terrible card compared to most other premium travel cards)?

First off I am not sure if she had used her $300 credit or not yet but that could have been a deciding factor to making this booking for sure, or it could have been the 5X earning that you can then “erase”.

Having to use the portal does make the card one I would be less likely to get. But if I did I would prioritize non chain hotels and car rentals to use the credit. I would try to avoid flights or hotels where I could earn points / use elite status as much as possible. For many that travel this would be easy for $300 a year. For others not so much. If that is the case then I would say get the Venture card instead since you probably don’t travel enough to use the perks of the Venture X anyway.

Hi – I’m Reader D and I already cashed out the $300 Venture X travel credit on a previous domestic flight earlier in the year. So this had nothing to do with the situation that occurred. The author was simply noting this was a way to use the $300 credit, not that I did.

Capital Region International Airport adds new airline, flights to Florida

D EWITT TWP. — Breeze Airways is expected to be the newest airline to offer flights from the Capital Region International Airport with service set to take off in October.

The relatively new airline, started about two and a half years ago and based largely on the East coast, is planning to offer Lansing-based flights to both Orlando and Fort Myers, Florida.

Lukas Johnson, the airline's chief commercial officer, said Monday that flights are expected to start the first week of October, with introductory flight pricing starting at $79.

He said the Lansing airport is often overlooked, with carriers tending to go to Detroit or Grand Rapids instead.

"It's a good opportunity for us," Johnson said.

And for customers? They get another route, he said, to the most popular destination for East Coast flyers: Orlando.

The other route, to Fort Myers, is one of the most popular routes for the Midwest, Johnson said.

"Lansing itself has a good local population size, it has the Capitol and schools and colleges in a defined area," he said. "I think our plane size and product is perfect for that."

Johnson said the airline considers itself a "nice low cost carrier," and plans to offer three tiers of seating for its Lansing routes, which are expected to be on Airbus A220 planes. There would be 137 seats, 12 of those first class and 25 with extra leg room.

The flights will start with a couple of routes each week and the airline has had a pattern of expanding and even adding new destinations if the flights are successful, Johnson said.

The airline also is introducing its own credit card with perks, in partnership with Barclays and Visa, he said.

The Lansing flights will be the first in Michigan for Breeze Airlines.

The airline is headquartered near Salt Lake City and has large operations in airports near Charleston, South Carolina; Tampa, Florida; Providence, Rhode Island; and Hartford, Connecticut.

Breeze Airlines will be the fifth airline operating from the DeWitt Township-based airport. The airport currently has four regularly scheduled airlines with destination that include Orlando.

Delta Airlines offers nonstop service to Detroit Metro Airport (DTW); American Airlines offers nonstop service to Washington, D.C. (DCA) and Orlando (MCO) as well as service to Chicago (ORD); low-fare airline Avelo offers nonstop service to Orlando (MCO); and Apple Vacations offers nonstop service to Cancun, Mexico (CUN); Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (PUJ) and Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ).
