RESORTS WORLD ONE CRUISE: REVIEW AND GUIDE

by thepinay solobackpacker | Jul 26, 2023 | Cruise Guide , Hong Kong , TAIWAN | 0 comments

Detailed cruise guide blog and review of Resorts World One cruise package and cruise ship.

Over a decade of traveling has taught me to appreciate various kinds of traveling styles. And one of my personal favorites is going on a cruise.  Recently, I experienced Resorts World One 3 day 2 night cruise from Hong Kong to Taiwan. And the question I often get is, is cruising worth it?

The thing about cruising is, you can enjoy your vacation even before reaching your destination. And it can be enjoyed by tourists of all ages, whether you are traveling with your family, friends, or partner. It is like staying on a floating resort that strives to satisfy your every wish and whim. You have so much to experience onboard like shopping, poolside activities, thrilling waterslides, top-notch musical performances, Broadway-style shows, poolside activities, spa, exciting games, lively arcades, adventure activities, seminars, workshops,  and internationally inspired dining options, among others.  It is non-stop fun from morning to night.

Cruising also gives you the opportunity to explore underrated tourist attractions that you may never have heard of. You can join immersive shore excursions once you hop off the ship at selected ports.

And of course, while sailing, you can enjoy the ocean views from dusk to dawn. If you consider the cruise package that you are getting – the stateroom , dining, entertainment, pool, and other activities are already included in the price, you will find that cruising is reasonably priced.

PRE-TRIP PREPARATION

Travel documents.

  • Passport and Passport Bio Page Photocopy – Prepare your passport and photocopy of the bio page. Make sure that your passport has 6 months validity from the end of your cruise date, with at least 2 blank pages for your entry and exit stamp.
  • Visa – Ensure that you have the appropriate visa. But for Philippine Passport Holders we have visa-free entry to Hong Kong and Taiwan. And both countries are now open to tourists regardless of your vaccination status.
  • E-Travel Document – If you’re flying from the Philippines, you are required to register and fill out the form at etravel.gov.ph   You need to do this before you fly overseas travel and before you fly back to the Philippines.
  • Vaccination Certificate – I brought my LGU vaccination certificates, but no one asked for it. Bring your vaccination certificate, vax cert, or the yellow vaccination passport  in case the Immigration in the Philippines or staff at the airline check-in counter asks for it. However, Resort World Cruises One is open to all passengers regardless of their vaccination status. But I would highly encourage that you get vaccinated since you will mingle with tons of other tourists from all over onboard.
  • Copy of Flights, Cruise Booking, and Cruise Itinerary – You must secure a copy of these for Immigration purposes. You can print it or save a digital copy in case the Immigration Officials ask for it.

Important: If you are traveling with a child but you are not the legal guardian, or you are traveling with a child that has a different family name from the parents, or a minor illegitimate child is traveling with the biological father only, please refer to required travel clearance for Filipino Minors HERE .

PACKING TIPS

  what to bring.

Pack like you would for a resort vacation. Dress comfortably , but also consider the season/climate of your destination. Bring at least one formal or semi-formal outfit for formal dining and watching the shows.

  • Bring swimwear if you plan on swimming in the pool.
  • Bring running shoes   if you plan to use the gym. Bring trekking shoes if you are joining the shore excursion that involves hiking.
  • Bring sunblock, sunglasses, and hats to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Bring cash (Hong Kong and Taiwan Dollars). While they accept Philippine Peso onboard, they must convert it first to Hong Kong Dollars before converting to Taiwan Dollars. It is best to bring HKD and Taiwan Dollar to avoid more conversion charges. I did not see any ATM on board, so make sure you stack up cash (HKD or Taiwan Dollars) before boarding the ship. You can withdraw HKD at Hong Kong Airport ATMs.
  • Bring Water Flask. This will come in handy if you want to refill and bring juice from The Lido to your room or during your shore excursion.

WHAT NOT TO BRING

There are prohibited items on board, and they are strict about it. They will seize the item and keep it in the safe. However, you can still claim and collect it after the cruise.

  • Extension wires – You are not supposed to bring this on board. You are only allowed to use the sockets in your stateroom/cabin.
  • Vape/E-cigarettes – Only regular cigarettes are allowed onboard. Use the designated smoking areas.
  • Drone – While my drone was able to go through security without being confiscated. I know that flying it while onboard is prohibited, whether cruising or even if the ship is docked. Drone flying is allowed in Hong Kong, but Taiwan currently has a NO DRONE policy.
  • Fruits and other Raw Food –  You’re not allowed to transport fruits, vegetables, or raw food to another country as they may carry foreign insects that may destroy the crops of the place you are visiting. This will be confiscated at the airport or port of entry.

CHECK-IN PROCEDURE

Resorts World One Cruise ship homeport is Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in Hong Kong.  This is where you will board the ship. So, yes, you must fly to Hong Kong from the Philippines or wherever country you are from. Then, you can proceed to Kai Tak Cruise Terminal along Victoria Harbor. You can go there by taxi, Grab, or bus.

resorts world one 1

It is advisable to arrive there an hour or so before your scheduled trip, as you must line up and go through Immigration and Security. Ensure you have all the travel documents with you for the check-in procedure.

Upon arriving at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, proceed to the check-in counters. The check-in procedure is like checking-in at the airport. You have the option to check-in your bags for free. Your bags will be sent directly to your staterooms. Make sure to bring your travel essentials with you as the luggage may arrive a few hours later.

IMMIGRATION AND SECURITY

After cruise check-in, proceed to security and Hong Kong Immigration for your exit stamp. Present your passport and your cruise ticket and itinerary if asked. Remember, no photo or video taking in this area in case you are documenting your cruise trip. Stop recording, keep your camera.

STATEROOM CARD

After clearing Security and Immigration, you need to go through the Cruise Boarding Pass . You need to provide your passport and copy of the cruise ticket to claim your stateroom card . This card contains your name, your stateroom number and deck number, emergency assembly station, embarkation date, and vessel name.

resorts world one 4

The stateroom card is essential to enjoy your cruise. This serves as your access card to your stateroom and your credit card inside the cruise ship. Everything you buy or consume that is not included in the cruise package will be charged to your stateroom card. And you can settle the charges at the end of your cruise trip (before disembarking the ship) with cash or credit card. So, never misplace your stateroom card, it is your lifeline inside the cruise ship. If in case you lose it, proceed to reception on Deck 7 and have it cancelled and replaced right away. As anyone who has access to it can charge your card.

BOARDING THE CRUISE SHIP

After claiming your stateroom card, you need to pass through the x-ray procedure before boarding the ship. Then, once cleared, you can board the ship. There are 2 lines for boarding: the Palace Guest Line and the line for the rest of the passengers. Tap your stateroom card to the electronic device. Then the staff will get your passport, this is a standard procedure. Make sure you have the photocopy of your passport bio page with it.  Resorts World One cruise ship will keep your passport during the sailing period, you can get it back after the cruise, before disembarkation. But every time you get off the ship for your Onshore Cruise, you will be handed the photocopy of your passport biopage. Check to make sure it has an exit or entry stamp on it. You will show this to the staff and Immigration Officers upon leaving the ship for the day tour.

resorts world one 5

Proceed to your stateroom and use the access card to open it. Check if your luggage is already outside your door. If not, wait for a few more minutes before it gets delivered.

WI-FI/INTERNET

But what about Wi-Fi? How do you stay online while on a cruise? Do not fret as Resorts World Cruises boast of satellite Wi-Fi connection where you can connect from 1-4 devices.  You can choose between standard and premium rates. And standard rate starts at HKD 118 (₱826).  We were able to use this during our 3 days 2 nights cruise with Resorts World Cruise One, and I must say the connection was reliable.

RESORTS WORLD ONE CRUISE SHIP

Measuring 268 meters in length and 32 meters wide with 13 decks.  This massive, fine-looking cruise ship was manufactured by Meyer Weft at Papenburg, Germany. Resorts World Cruises One was designed to accommodate the growing Asian cruise market. This ship can billet up to 1,856 passengers in its 928 staterooms.

STATEROOMS/CABIN

There are various kinds of staterooms (cabins) inside the cruise ship, which are located at Deck 4 to 11.

resorts world one 53

  • Balcony Staterooms
  • Oceanview Staterooms
  • Interior Staterooms
  • Palace Villa
  • Palace Penthouse
  • Palace Deluxe Suite
  • Palace Suite

OCEANVIEW STATEROOMS

We stayed at the Oceanview Staterooms during our cruise. It is a decently sized room, around 13 square meters with 2 comfortable single beds.  The cream wall adorned with minimalist wallpaper and the carpeted floor induced a chic feel. There is a double USB port at the bedside, which is immensely helpful for charging our phones and camera batteries.

Although it does not have a balcony, the sea view with morning light can put you in a good mood when you wake up each morning. There is a small sofa perfect for curling up for a good read or while browsing your phone. There is also a flat panel TV attached to the wall with satellite programs.

Resorts World One Ocean Stateroom

Resorts World One Ocean Stateroom

Our stateroom is provided with bottled mineral water daily. There is also a kettle and complimentary coffee and tea.

Storage was carefully planned inside the Oceanview staterooms. Under the bed, there is enough room to store our luggage. There is a multi-shelved wardrobe to hang our clothes and drawers too to keep our essentials. The wardrobe is conveniently located just outside the bathroom. It is equipped with a small safe to keep our valuables.

The bathroom may be compact, but it was also carefully planned to give you space to move around. There is a walk-in shower supplied with shampoo and body wash on a dispenser. Toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and cotton buds are provided too.

THE PALACE AT RESORTS WORLD ONE

The Palace is like a luxury ship within the ship. It is an all-suite concept where palace guests have 24-hour butler concierge service.  It is meant for those who have more money to spend during the cruise.

resorts world one The Palace

Palace Guest enjoy priority check-in, private lounge, exclusive access to The Palace, priority access to Production Shows, selected exclusive Kids programs for children between 2-12 years old, set meal entitlements at designated specialty dining restaurants, Happy Hour with complimentary drinks, standard Wi-Fi package throughout the cruise, and more.

And of course, the most popular outdoor facilities of Resorts World One is the Parthenon Pool where guests can swim at its Greek-themed pool. They can be crowded though, so be early. It is open from 8:00 AM until 10:00 PM. You should see its pastel colors at night, so pleasing to the eye. Also, do not miss Caesar’s Slide , a fun waterslide beside the Parthenon Pool.

RESORTS WORLD ONE SHORE EXCURSION

While you may be tempted to just relax and enjoy Resort World’s One facilities and activities, take advantage of the shore excursions being offered here. Shore excursions are pre-arranged tours by cruise ships. Since most of the ports are quite far from the usual touristy places of each destination, it can be hard to explore on your own, and often these packages are quite unique from the usual tour packages.

What I like about booking shore excursions directly with the cruise ship company is, it’s hassle-free, since they will take care of everything – the transfer between the ship and land, the tour guides, and the meals. They will also ensure that you will return on time before the ship departs, so, in case of unforeseen circumstances, the cruise ship will wait for you. Unlike if you do DIY Travel or book your tour with a travel agency outside of the cruise ship, you will be responsible if you end up being late.

During our 3 days and 2 nights cruise with Resorts World One, we availed ourselves of 2 Shore Excursions. Take note that this is not part of your cruise package, you will have to book and pay for this separately. You can approach the Reception/Concierge for assistance.

IMPORTANT : Before you leave resorts World One cruise ship for the shore excursion, claim a stamped photocopy of your passport from the staff. They will usually set up a table for this near the midship elevator.

KAOSHIUNG TOUR: SCENIC CIJIN ISLAND

resorts world one 22

A perfect day trip from Kaohsiung is Cijin Island (also spelled as Chijin or Qijin). It is part of the original core of Kaohsiung established by Hsu Ah-hua, a fisherman who sought shelter here from the storm.  Cijin Island is oozing with tourist spots, and we got to visit some of them during the Shore Excursion.

I’ll write a more detailed post about the Resorts World One Shore Excursion but let me give you a list of the places we visited on Cijin Island.

  • Cijin Island
  • Kaoshiung Lighthouse
  • Chihou Fort
  • Cijin Beach
  • Qi Jin Old Street

DISEMBARKATION

resorts world one 54

At the end of your cruise trip, you need to disembark the ship. And here is how to do it:

SETTLE YOUR BILLS. Head to Reception, present your stateroom card/access card, and settle your bill using cash or credit card.

CLAIM YOUR PASSPORT. The night before your scheduled departure, claim your passport. If you have already settled your bill, they should hand it to you. If not, you need to pay first the charges you incurred in your stateroom card. The staff will leave instructions on your bed. Just follow it. During our tour, we were instructed to claim it at the table they set up near the elevator at midship from 7:00 PM to midnight the night before our disembarkation. But we forgot about it! Because we were busy packing our clothes. If that happens, you can claim it the next day at reception on Deck 7, no worries. Just claim it early in the morning, to avoid long lines and further delays.

LEAVE YOUR LUGGAGE AT YOUR DOOR. Pack your things the night before your departure. You can leave your luggage outside your stateroom door and your cabin attendant will pick it up for check-in. Make sure to hand carry your valuables, medicines, and gadgets. Do not forget, DO NOT pack the clothes, undergarments, shoes, or sandals that you plan to wear the next day.

GO TO THE MEET UP PLACE FOR DISEMBARKATION. Take note of your meet up time and venue for disembarkation.  Be there at least 30  minutes before disembarkation to avoid delays. Usually, it is at the Grand Piazza on Deck 7.

PREPARE YOUR STATEROOM CABIN CARD AND PASSPORT. Make sure you have your passport and stateroom cabin card in handy. You need this when exiting the ship and when you pass through Immigration.

EXIT THE SHIP. Wait for the announcement if it is okay to disembark the ship already. Then, exit the ship.

CLAIM YOUR LUGGAGE . You can claim your luggage at the Baggage Area outside the ship before you go through Immigration and Security.

GO THROUGH IMMIGRATION AND SECURITY. Prepare your travel documents and passport. Go through Immigration and Security. To enter Hong Kong again where you need to fly back to your next destination or country of origin, you need to fill out the entry form.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)

resorts world one 16

  WHY CRUISE?

We have this preconceived notion that only the rich can go on a cruise. Since you need to break the bank to be able to afford a cruise. But times are changing, and these days, cruise trips are more reasonably priced than ever. If you take the time to calculate what is included in the cruise package versus a regular travel overseas, you will find that the price difference isn’t that huge.

For example:

I will write a more detailed post about the sample budget when taking a Resorts World One cruise. But it is possible not to break the bank when cruising. If you dine in at inclusive restaurants only and drink only the beverages provided at inclusive restaurants.

Also, Resorts World One sails to visa-free countries for Filipinos and other ASEAN Passport holders, so less hassle. You do not have to worry about visa processing. They also sail throughout the year, check their cruise schedule at their official website.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE RESORTS WORLD ONE TICKET PRICE

When you book a cruise ticket for Resorts World One, the cruise package includes typically includes your stateroom/ cabin, port fees, shows and entertainment onboard, activities, drinks, and meals (inclusive restaurants), use of facilities such as pool, gym, etc. If you want to avoid extra charges for the meals, dine in at inclusive restaurants only (The Lido and Lido Grill, Pavilion, and Dream Dining Room), one time per meal. Refer to the details above under the Inclusive Restaurants sections.

HOW MUCH IS THE GRATUITY FEE? IS TIPPING REQUIRED?

A required gratuity  fee of HKD 450 (₱3,148) will be charged separately. You can settle this a day before you disembark the ship.  If you want to tip a staff, you can still make additional tips at your discretion. If you decide to do so, a $10-$15 tip per person per day is reasonable.

IS CRUISING SAFE?

Yes. Cruise ships are designed and operated in strict compliance with international law. All the staff undergo rigorous training before they can board the ship.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET SICK ORS THERE IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY?

There are licensed doctors, nurses, and medical practitioners onboard in case you need medical attention. Usually, the ships turn back or go to the nearest port if there is a medical emergency so they can transfer the passenger to the nearest hospital.

DO I NEED TO GET OFF THE SHIP AND JOIN THE SHORE EXCURSION?

No. Shore excursions are optional. You have the option to join or not to join the day tour. It’s up to you.

  TRAVEL TIPS AND REMINDERS

resorts world one muster station

Muster Station

Always check if your clock is set to local time. Remember, there could be a time difference between your country of origin and the place you are visiting.

In most countries, bringing fruits, vegetables, flowers, rocks, and sand are prohibited.

Familiarize yourself with the cruise ship. Take note of the fire exit, stairways, evacuation location, life vest location and lifeboat locations. Attend the safety/muster drill before the ship sails so you can learn about the proper procedures in case of emergency. It is important to learn the exact location of your muster station.

Wash your hands . Always wash your hands before eating or after doing activities to help prevent spread of disease caused by germs, bacteria, and virus.

Practice the LNT Principle. Leave no trace. Leave what you find, do not collect rocks and sand from your trip. Dispose your trash properly. Do not throw anything in the ocean. Plane ahead and prepare. Be considerate of other visitors aboard the ship.

Always bring your stateroom card. Make sure you always carry your stateroom card with you. Do not lose it.

After having a whale of a time on Dream Cruises’ cruise to nowhere , we were pretty bummed when it ceased operations in March 2022 . Thankfully, it has returned under a new name — Resorts World Cruises !

To find out what’s new and what’s back, we hopped on its inaugural cruise on 15 June 2022. So here’s a preview of what to expect on Genting Dream 🚢.

Pre-boarding Essentials

Resort World Cruises Genting Dream - Singapore Cruise

Before you set sail, here are some pre-boarding essentials to take note of:

1) Mandatory online check-in — closes 24 hours before sailing 2) Take a supervised or tele-supervised ART test and present a negative result — earliest one day prior to sailing 3) Fill up a pre-boarding health questionnaire — on the day of sailing 4) Collect your cruise key card — on the day of sailing 5) Check-in via SafeEntry on the TraceTogether app or token — before boarding the ship

What’s New on Genting Dream

This may be the same ship under Dream Cruises but we’ve sussed out the new stuff.

1) Immersive Activities with Performers

People posing in Brazilian Carnival Dance - Genting Dream

This was one thing I really loved about the cruise. Especially when I spotted my on-board dance instructor on the big stage performance just a couple of hours later!

People Performing on Stage - Genting Dream

The entertainment organisers wanted to create an immersive experience for guests to “dive” into, so guests could interact with the performers even when they were off stage.

An afterparty was held at the dance floor of Zouk Beach Club so the fun doesn’t end when the performance does.

People Dancing at Zouk Night Club - Singapore Cruise

Unfortunately, my dance instructor recognised us so we couldn’t escape the awkward dancing 😅 but at least we still had a great time!

2) Foam Party at Sea

People Partying with Foam - Genting Dream

For those who just want to party (but with an extra kick), here’s a brand new activity: foam party at sea!

Equipped with a giant foam spraying machine, gigantic floats, and water guns, we had a blast blowing foam at each other for two hours and imagining it was snow in hot, humid Singapore.

Don’t worry about the aftermath too. There will be towels provided to help you dry off before you head on to your next activity.

3) World’s First Internationally Halal-certified Kitchen on a Cruise

Genting Dream is not the first cruise ship to serve halal food, but it’s the first with an internationally halal-certified kitchen.

Halal-Certified Buffet - Genting Dream

This is based on OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) and SMIIC (The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries) standards. The cruise also holds a vegetarian certification by Global Vegetarian Certification Services.

Man in Halal Lift - Singapore Cruise

We even went behind the scenes and discovered that there are dedicated timings and lifts to deliver the food.

From the way the food is prepared and delivered, to the way utensils are washed after — everything is segregated so there is no chance of cross-contamination at all!

While this doesn’t really affect me personally, it helps give my Muslim friends peace of mind when dining on a cruise 🙂.

On-board Activities

Most of the facilities and activities are similar to the previous Dream Cruises, so here’s a recap of what you can expect on this one.

Girl Bowling - Genting Dream

Rain or shine, these are some activities that you can do: arcade, bowling, karaoke, t-shirt or tote bag painting workshops, and workout classes. But prepare to fork out some cash for certain activities.

Boy Painting T-shirt - Singapore Cruise

For example, bowling costs S$10 per game and it’s S$22 to buy a t-shirt to paint on — but at least you’ll get to keep it! We also recommend booking slots for the karaoke room early in advance because demand is really high.

People at Brazilian Carnival Dance Class - Singapore Cruise

If you’re looking to save a few bucks, try the free workout classes instead! Choose from yoga to a couple of dance classes like funk line dancing, hip hop dance, Brazilian carnival dance, and traditional flamenco dance.

We didn’t have time to try them all so we went for the Brazilian carnival dance where we learned different types of dances like the salsa and samba. It’s a one-hour class so expect a lot of hip-shaking, spinning, and sweating. Remember to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated!

People at Waterslide Park - Genting Dream

While we can’t splash around in the sea, we can definitely do so at the on-board waterslide park. There are six different slides to choose from — my personal favourite being the donut-shaped slide which opens up mid-way, allowing you a glimpse of the blue sky before diving back to darkness and into the water.

Girl in Hot Tub - Singapore Cruise

Besides the water slides, there are also pools and hot tubs for you to swim and “chill” in leisurely.

People on High Obstacle Course - Singapore Cruise

But if you don’t want to get wet, try the ziplines, rock climbing wall, high obstacle course, mini-golf, ping pong, or even giant chess.

Girl Playing Mini-golf - Genting Dream

You could even set up a friendly basketball match in the SportsPlex too.

Girl Playing Basketball at SportsPlex - Singapore Cruise

Or dance and party your hearts out to popular hits played by DJs all through the night at Zouk Beach Club.

Party on Dance Floor - Genting Dream

Bonus — Visit the Captain’s Bridge

Controls at Captain's Bridge - Singapore Cruise

Before covid hit, there were organised tours to the captain’s bridge — a control room where the captain and his crew navigate the ship.

Girl Looking at Captain's Bridge from Viewing Room - Singapore Cruise

But due to social distancing restrictions, the tours stopped and we don’t have that luxury anymore. So we were actually glad to discover this hidden gem on board to find out what it’s like!

Girl Looking at Ship Replica in Captain's Bridge Viewing Room - Singapore Cruise

Head up to deck 15 via the lift (forward lobby) and walk past Crystal Life fitness. Turn left and walk all the way to the end. You’ll find a small, hidden room with a clear view of the captain’s bridge, plus a really cool mini replica of the ship to admire!

Entertainment

Couple Doing Balancing Act - Genting Dream

Every day, a newsletter would be delivered to your cabin — with various show and programme schedules so you can plan your day to catch them all!

*Note: The timings are in local (SG) time.

Dance Performance - Singapore Cruise

One highlight not to be missed is definitely the Yin.Yang performance at the Zodiac Theatre. It blends eastern and western entertainment, featuring a world-class array of performances from balancing acts to contemporary dances.

Singing Performance - Genting Dream

I was deeply impressed by one performer in particular, Tong Shaohan, who wowed us with his unique double vocals — singing both female and male parts in a duet.

We were truly shocked, yet in awe when we found out this beautifully dressed lady who sang in a high-pitched voice turned out to be an extremely talented man.

*Pro-tip: Arrive earlier as doors close 10 minutes before showtime and seats are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dream Boys Performance - Singapore Cruise

Apart from the Yin.Yang show, we also had a sneak peek of Dream Boys (which isn’t new), but is set to make a comeback sometime in July.

Dining Experiences

On the Genting Dream, there are more than 20 dining options including restaurants, cafes and bars — not all are free though, so take note!

Inclusive Restaurants — Complimentary

The Lido Halal Food Buffet - Genting Dream

These are the places where you can eat your fill without any charges.

As mentioned above, Genting Dream has an internationally halal-certified kitchen. However, it’s only limited to food items in The Lido restaurant.

Jain Food Buffet - Genting Dream

But don’t fret because there are still plenty of cuisines to choose from, such as Western, Chinese, and even Jain — for vegetarians with a strict diet of not consuming any food produced underground (including potatoes and carrots).

Girl Eating Dim Sum - Singapore Cruise

For other non-halal options, there’s also the Dream Dining Room Lower and Upper which serve Western and Chinese menus respectively.

*Note: Check the daily newsletter for restaurant breakfast, lunch, and dinner timings. You’ll also be charged an extra S$15 for a second meal during the same meal period.

Specialty Restaurants — Charges Apply

Chef Cooking Food at Umi Uma - Singapore Cruise

The food might be more pricey (from S$60), but speaking from experience, it’s really worth it! During our time on the cruise, we tried two specialty restaurants: Umi Uma (Japanese teppanyaki ) and Bistro (Western).

We ordered the Emperor (steak and seafood) and Samurai (chicken and salmon) set from Umi Uma where the chef cooked our dishes before us. The meat was cooked perfectly and not chewy at all! The salmon also had a flavourful, buttery taste 😋.

Umi Uma Meal with Steak and Fish - Genting Dream

At Bistro, we had a full four-course meal with a seafood salad appetiser, pumpkin soup, and a choice of seafood tower or braised beef cheeks, before ending it off with some sweet panna cotta!

Girl Eating Seafood and Beef - Singapore Cruise

Other dining places include Silk Road Chinese Restaurant, Hot Pot, Lido Outdoor Hotpot and Grill, and Crystal Life Cuisine.

*Pro-tip: Reserve in advance as restaurants can be fully booked during peak hours.

Cafes and Bars — Charges Apply

Girl Holding Cocktail - Genting Dream

Besides restaurants, you can grab some light meals at cafes like Lobby Cafe and Blue Lagoon, or even cool down at Gelateria with some homemade gelato.

There are also various bars all around the cruise for alcohol-lovers — open all day till late. Check out Bar 360 for drinks and live music, Mixt for its innovative cocktails, or Tributes which has indoor and outdoor seating coupled with entertaining performances.

Accommodation

Genting Dream offers various room options, from balcony to oceanview staterooms and even palace suites.

Balcony Deluxe Stateroom

Balcony Deluxe Stateroom on Cruise - Singapore Cruise

We stayed in a Balcony Deluxe Stateroom which consisted of a queen-sized bed, a large sofa, a bathroom, and of course, a balcony overlooking the sea. To be honest, I was really surprised by how spacious the room is.

Bathroom with Bath tub - Singapore Cruise

We were also lucky to find a bathtub in our bathroom (apparently, not every room has it) and the dual-tap sink was way bigger than the one in my home.

Sunset View on Cruise - Genting Dream

But the best part of the room would have to be the balcony — where we got a gorgeous view of the sunrise.

Cost: From ~S$550/pax for three nights

Palace Suite

We didn’t have time to tour the Palace Suite but this is what it’ll look like:

Palace Suite Room on Cruise - Singapore Cruise

It looks pretty similar to the Balcony Deluxe Stateroom, but the private balcony is twice as big! Staying in a palace suite also gives guests certain perks like access to exclusive restaurants and programmes, as well as a 24-hour butler service 😏.

Cost: From ~S$1,100/pax for three nights

Is Resorts World Cruises’ Genting Dream Worth Checking Out?

Resorts World Cruises Main Deck - Genting Dream

It’s been a very long time since I’ve been on a cruise (I’m talking about 10 years ago-long), so I was really excited to just hop onto a ship once again!

I was glad that the water slides still remained and I could have fun like a kid again without any reserve. Being older now, I could also appreciate the fine dining experience of a full-course meal and of course, drinking alcohol 🍷.

Girl Eating Breakfast Buffet - Singapore Cruise

The halal-certified food also didn’t taste any different from usual and I stuffed myself with plenty of different options. The highlight of my cruise though was interacting with the performers when they weren’t on stage and discovering more about their culture.

Fun fact: Do you know why Brazilians dance so well? According to my Brazilian dance instructor, Gabrielle, most kids there start learning from 10 years old!

Girl on Balcony with Sea View - Genting Dream

With Resorts World Cruises as a new cruise line, we now have more options to set sail from Singapore’s ports. Although we didn’t dock anywhere this time, the automatic time change when we were near Indonesia made us feel like we were overseas.

Starting 1 July, the cruise will also sail internationally to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand! You can make your reservations online with prices starting from ~S$149 per person (book by 3 July 2022) 🤩.

Resorts World Cruises is back with a splash: First look at the luxurious experience aboard the Genting Dream

Pavin Chopra

All aboard, cruises are back! I was thrilled when I received an exclusive invite from Resorts World Cruises (RWC) for the inaugural voyage (from 15 to 17 June 2022) of their flagship Genting Dream from her Singapore homeport. RWC plans to have an entire fleet of luxurious ships as part of what they envision as ‘Resorts Cruising At Sea’.

cruise - boat

This trip gave us a taste of the 2 Nights Wednesday Getaway Cruise (from S$267, subject to change) to nowhere. We stayed in the Balcony Deluxe Stateroom , and this is a sneak peek of the interiors— nothing less than the feel of a 4 star hotel, if you ask me!

cruise - interiors of room

We settled in comfortably, and enjoyed the balcony view of a stunning rainbow across the skies— what a fabulous start to the trip.

cruise - rainbow

Walking through just a small section of the huge ship (335 metres end to end) to get to our room got us excited to see everything the vessel had to offer. Was 2 nights enough? Keep reading to find out.

cruise - balcony on ship

What I did on the RWC Genting Dream Cruise

I repeat, Genting Dream is a massive ship and it gives guests a boatload (haha, I kill me!) of activity options. Whether you want to socialise, relax, learn a skill, get an adrenaline rush, or just while the time away, they have you covered.

cruise - plate of jain food

There are 3 options that are completely free— the buffet at The Lido, Dream Dining Lower Deck & Dream Dining Upper Deck . Just saunter in and eat to your heart’s content. That should be sufficient for most couples and families on a short cruise.

If the fare gets repetitive or if you want to savour some fine dining, there are a host of specialty restaurants to pamper your palate. We tried the Hot Pot , and Bistro .

Picture (I’ll help you) having spicy soups and sizzling meats while feasting your eyes on the vast ocean— this was simply breathtaking! Proud to report that we took our time with this meal.

cruise - hotpot dining by ocean

A Premium Meat Combination Set (US Kurobuta Pork Belly, Sliced Lamb, Premium Australian Striploin, Farm Fresh Chicken, Beef Ball, Pork Meat Ball, Pork & Cabbage Dumpling, Chicken Sausage, Pork Sausage) will set you back S$68 (serves 2 pax).

The menu also features Luxury Seafood Combination Set (S$93) , Vegetables Mock Set (S$38) , and other platters. They also have an extensive range of à  la carte dishes for you to choose from.

cruise - dining area at bistro

The Bistro serves up beautifully-plated western food and the dishes here were exquisite (you may want to dress up a little for this place). I enjoyed the Lobster Spaghetti (S$68) and Premium Steak (S$88) which came with peppercorn sauce and a side of potato wedges. I’d go back just for this meal.

cruise - halal dining options

The Genting Dream is the world’s first OIC/ SMIIC standard Halal-friendly cruise  ship, which offers Halal and authentic Jain Vegetarian certified cuisines in dedicated venues.

Altogether, 35 individual food and beverage facilities comprising inclusive and speciality restaurants, a Bar City and more pepper the ship. You will not go hungry or thirsty on this vessel, people.

cruise - zip lining on ship

Want to burn off the calories? Thrill seekers should head to the Rope Course and Zipline for a dose of adrenaline and wind in your hair. The zipline platform is located off the side of the ship so that riders cruise over nothing but blue water for 35 metres accompanied only by the lovely zzzzzzzzz sound of the zipline trolley on the rope. Definitely something to try while you’re here!

cruise - main pool

Water babies who want to jump into water instead can spin themselves into a tizzy on the 6 different waterslides that range from the short and straight to the long and bendy. Whichever one you take, it ends with a splash in the huge cool pool on the sun-filled deck. There is also a jacuzzi and a kiddie pool.

cruise - entertainers on stage

RWC has really gone all out in the entertainment front. The troupe of professional entertainers and dancers on board are wonderful. Their warm and jovial personalities got even the most introverted guests to drop their inhibitions and participate.

cruise - dancers

I noticed that some of the dancers double up as instructors for the hip hop classes. These classes are quite popular because the criteria apparently is to choose the instructor you find the most attractive. You can also attend yoga classes on board (using the same instructor criteria). Ha!

cruise - zouk beach club

The dance classes, though, are what you need to brush up on your boogie skills because there is ample space and opportunity to put them into practice. Genting Dream is home to Zouk Beach Club , a name that will bring a smile to the faces of all 80s and 90s kids (me!).

cruise - che molly

On the second night of the cruise’s maiden voyage as a new cruise line, we fixed our eyes (and ears) on Che Molly, Guest DJ from Zouk Singapore! Could this get any better?

cruise - foam party

Zouk hosts a foam party in the evening before the place transforms into clubbing central with indoor and outdoor dance floors.

cruise - foam party in the ship

I must say it really is something to be in the middle of nowhere, with open views of the sea, and getting all foamed! I could get used to this.

Oh, no! Where are the kids? Oh, right. You left them safe, happy and very entertained at the Little Dreamers Club . The caring staff here supervise exciting activities and classes for kids between the ages of 2 and 12.

If you’re looking for a fun family activity, bowling always ranks highly. The best time to visit Genting Dream’s bowling arena is at night when the neon lights make the venue come alive.

cruise - perfomance on stage

If you enjoy a more creative time as a family, the live production shows at the Zodiac Theatre will enthral you with their line-up of world-class performers.

cruise - spa

After all that enjoyment and excitement, wind down at the Crystal Life Spa where you can rejuvenate mind, body and soul through Asian and Western relaxation practices. Some of us (ahem) prefer retail therapy instead and for that, there are the Boutiques . Get your hands on the luxury brands you love, all at duty-free prices.

Final thoughts

cruise - night view

The 2 days and 2 nights of our cruise went by so fast! It was a blur of excitement, eating, entertainment and experiences. In fact, it was over so quickly that I did not get to do everything I planned despite staying up way past my regular bedtime.

cruise - lady standing on man's head

RWC has created the entertainment program on this cruise in such a way that I cannot imagine anyone not loving their time on board. It so comprehensive and covers just about every genre you could think of. My recommendation is that you sign up for a package that is 3 nights long to get the best value for money.

cruise - pool at night

Needless to say, I’m already planning my next sail!

The sea glittered with artificial stars, reflecting the electric lights of the buildings surrounding Kaohsiung Harbor. It was our first and last day in the city, having docked at noon, and now departing mid-evening. A brief but fun tour of Kaohsiung—a cross section of what the city has to offer. I was at the top deck of Resorts World One, on a cruise visiting two southern Taiwan locales, musing over the day that was.

RESORTS WORLD CRUISES

Resorts World Cruises are currently using two ships from the now defunct Genting Cruise Lines— Resorts World One (formerly Star Cruises’ Superstar Virgo ) which is berthed in Hong Kong, and Genting Dream (formerly Dream Cruises) in Singapore.     Resorts World Cruises has recently celebrated its first year of affordable cruises, so we can probably expect more from them in the coming years. And, of course, they have anniversary promos .

RESORTS WORLD ONE

Resorts World Cruises’ newest ship, Resorts World One, can bed 1,856 individuals in 928 staterooms. It’s about ten basketball courts long, two courts wide, and has thirteen floors.

Departing from Hong Kong , it offers two nights cruise to Taiwan’s Kaohsiung, three nights to Kaohsiung and Penghu, and two and three nights in China’s Sanya. Departing from Kaohsiung , it has three nights cruise to Penghu and Hong Kong, and four nights to Hong Kong. See full and updated schedule here .

GENTING DREAM

With a passenger capacity of 3,352 on 1,674 staterooms, Genting Dream is Resort Worlds Cruises’ premier cruise ship.   Departing from Singapore , it offers two nights cruises to Kuala Lumpur, three nights to Kuala Lumpur and Penang, three nights to Phuket. Departing from Malaysia , it has two nights cruises to Singapore, three nights to Penang and Singapore, three nights to Singapore and Phuket, and four nights to Singapore. See full and updated schedule here .

HOW TO BOOK A TRIP WITH RESORTS WORLD CRUISES

While these two cruise ships aren’t docked in the Philippines. Filipinos can still book a cruise with them through the official website or through their Senior Sales Manager for Resorts World Cruises Philippines, Andrea Manzano ([email protected]).

resort world cruise blog

They currently offer a FlyCruise Package for as low as USD 458.00 per person, which includes roundtrip airfare to Hong Kong, two or three nights cruise, and an Inside Stateroom Cabin. Note that this doesn’t include Philippine travel tax, transfers from airport to port and vice versa, and other incidentals like travel insurance, shore excursions, etc.

resort world cruise blog

One can also opt to buy a Regular Cruise Package , and fly to Hong Kong DIY. If you have time, this is the better choice since it would allow you to fly to Hong Kong earlier or later, and you can get to explore Hong Kong for a few more days. You’d have to, of course, book yourself a hotel, but you’re there anyway, so why not maximize your vacation.

resort world cruise blog

Another option is booking a One Way Cruise . This can be done for Genting Dream, but is currently unavailable for Resorts World One. Hopefully, in the future, they allow guests to sail from Hong Kong then disembark at, say Kaohsiung, Penghu, or Sanya. This is actually perfect for travelers wanting to explore these places more thoroughly. One can still actually do this, but you still have to pay for the full ticket price.

We personally flew from Manila via Cathay Pacific on the day of the cruise itself, had lunch at Hong Kong, then went straight to Kai Tak Cruise Terminal for checking in at the Resorts World One cruise ship via a rented bus.

RESORTS WORLD CRUISES CHILD RATE & POLICIES

You can definitely bring kids on a cruise. Resorts World Cruises allow infants 6 months to 2 years old to board, as long as they’re accompanied by at least two adult guests. For kids under 18 years of age, they must have an adult companion in the same room, or in a connecting room. Rates for infants (6 months to 2 years old) are 25% off the published rate . Kids from 2 to 18 are charged with full fees. But here’s a bit of a cruise travel hack, since you’re probably gonna cruise as a family, the 3rd or 4th person you will book on the same cabin—regardless if they’re kids or adults—would have a much lower rate than a regular cruise fee . Resorts World Cruises do allow kids to cruise for free during certain promos. And they have a promo for Genting Dream in Singapore, in which up to two children—6 months to below 18 years old—can board the cruise for free. The cruise is child-friendly. They have a playground that kids can use and a daycare play area where they can also play without worry.

WHAT TO BRING ON A CRUISE TRIP

Like all destinations, there are essential things that you must bring when going on a cruise trip. Well, especially if it’s your first time.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS / CURRENCY

• Passport & Passport Photocopy – Required during cruise check in, and needed if you’re gonna avail of the shore excursions

• Digital eTravel Document – Fill out the form at https://etravel.gov.ph/ for both outbound and inbound travel

• VaxCertPH – Get yours at https://vaxcert.doh.gov.ph/ , got one but it really wasn’t asked for when we travelled to Hong Kong or even when we disembarked at Taiwan. Also, Resorts World Cruises does not require a COVID-19 vaccination for its guests—although they highly encourage them to have one.

• Other IDs – Not really needed, but optional

• Printed / Digital Copies of Flight Booking Details, Cruise Booking, Cruise Itinerary – For airport Immigration Officials, you know how strict ours are. So better be prepared just in case they ask for it.

• Hong Kong Dollar / US Dollar – Resorts World One accepts PHP (Philippine Peso) to NTD (New Taiwan Dollar) conversion at the ship’s lobby, however, it has to undergo two conversions—PHP to HKD (Hong Kong Dollar), then HKD to NTD. So, you’d be losing a bit on the conversions. If you have Hong Kong dollars saved somewhere, bring it with you. Or if you have USD, it’s better to bring that instead of PHP.

• Rubber Shoes – If you plan to join shore excursions, hit the gym, do some running on the top deck of the ship, then a pair of comfortable rubber shoes is a must.

• Swimwear & Slippers – Since Resorts World One has a pool, chances are, you’d probably swim. So, bring your swimwear, goggles, and more importantly, slippers. It’s much more convenient to go to the pool in flip flops than in shoes, especially on your way back to your room when you’re already wet.

• Hats, Umbrellas, Sunblock – For shore excursions, this is a must, especially if you’re doing the Kaohsiung shore excursion since it would be done during the early afternoon.

OTHER STUFF

• Toiletries – Resorts World One provides adequate but very basic toiletries for guests (toothbrush set, refillable body and hair wash), so if you’re expecting five-star hotel caliber toiletries, better bring your own.

• Portable Bidet & Wet Wipes – The toilets at Resorts World One aren’t fitted with bidets, if you have a portable one, then bring it with you by all means. It will save a lot of stress, and tissue papers too, lol.

• Refillable Bottle – Save on plastic water bottles and refill at the buffet restos—you can even put in coffee or fruit juice and keep then warm or cold for an extended period.

• Eco Bags – Taiwan doesn’t provide plastic bags or even paper bags when you buy something even in convenience stores. A personal eco bag would be a great help, not only for you, but also for the environment.

• Canned Drinks – While there are fruit juices available on the inclusive restaurants inside the ship, softdrinks and beer are charged extra. So, if you can’t live without these and you happen to have extra kilos left in your baggage, these are allowed to be brought in. One of my friends actually brought in a few—extras from the resto we ate in while in Hong Kong, and I actually brought in a few beer cans from Taiwan for my collection. Although bringing in a beer is a bit iffy, as according to their website, bringing in alcohol is prohibited.

WHAT NOT TO BRING ON A CRUISE TRIP

While there are obvious things you can’t bring with you while on a cruise—like your dog, perhaps—there are not so obvious things that you’d be surprised aren’t allowed inside a cruise ship.

• Extension Wires – For digital nomads and phone addicts, this is a must bring. But, for some strange reason, this isn’t allowed inside a cruise ship. They say it sucks extra electricity from the ship, especially when plugged without being used.

• Drones – You can’t fly drones when aboard the ship—whether it’s docked or cruising. Also, Taiwan currently has a no-drone policy.

• E-Cigarettes – These are prohibited on-board, regular cigarettes are allowed.

• Travel Adaptors – For Philippines residents, there’s no need to bring a travel adaptor as the standard two vertical plug works with their electric outlets. Resorts World One has a three-pin universal outlet that accepts most, if not all, types of electrical plugs. In addition, the bedside outlet has USB ports where you can use your cellphone cables to charge without using a charging head.

• Towels – Save up on baggage space and leave your bulky towels at home, Resorts World One has ample supply of towels for your everyday needs.

• Snacks – Unless you have a particular favorite chips or chocolates, better leave these at home. Resorts World One has buffet afternoon snacks and midnight snacks for your in-between meals.

• Fruits & Raw Food – While these can be healthy, fruits aren’t usually allowed to be transported to a different country due to a possibility of pest infestation.

HOW TO GET TO HONG KONG KAI TAK CRUISE TERMINAL

To board Resorts World One, you’d have to go to Kai Tak Cruise Terminal along Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor. One can go there by taxi or via public transportation like minibuses and city buses. If you’re flying in to Hong Kong International Airport there is no direct bus transfer to the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, the easiest way would be via taxi or Grab, which would take about 30 to 45 minutes.

CHECKING IN FOR HONG KONG RESORTS WORLD CRUISES

Once at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal , you have the option to check in your bags for free . Bring items that you’d need right away, like toiletries or a change of wardrobe, as your bags would arrive hours later in your room. If you don’t want to check in your bags, that’s fine too. Note, however, that it takes a bit of a walk from the bag drop off all the way to the cruise ship.

Checking in requires you to pass Hong Kong Immigration where you’d need your passport. Then past this, another queue for your cruise boarding pass , which you’d need your passport, a photocopy of your passport, and cruise boarding details. They will then take your passport and give you a card that you use as a key to your room and access to inclusive cruise restaurants. You’ll then have to x-ray your stuff, and finally, you board the cruise ship.

RESORTS WORLD CRUISES CARD

All passengers of Resorts World Cruises, be it Resorts World One or Genting Dream, are given access cards as they board the cruise ship. The card has the passenger’s name, room number and location, emergency assembly station location, embarkation date, and vessel. Keep this card with you at all times as this identifies you as a passenger of Resorts World One, serves as your room key, and on-board credit card. All fees you’ll incur on the ship are charged on the card, which you’ll need to settle at your last day using either cash or credit card.

RESORTS WORLD ONE ROOM TYPES

Resorts World One has a total of 928 cabins, which they call staterooms. It’s divided into seven room types; from the most affordable Interior Staterooms —which has no windows—and their Oceanview and Balcony Staterooms , to their luxurious Palace Suites, Deluxe Suites, Penthouse , and Villa .

We were personally billeted on their Oceanview Stateroom . Its space is smaller compared to a regular hotel room, but you’re on a cruise ship, so it is definitely expected. It has two single beds (or one queen bed), with a provision for a third one via a folding double deck bed. It has a closet, work table, central bedside table, flatscreen TV, electronic safe, tea and coffeemaking facilities, en suite toilet and bath, and most importantly, a window.

The toilet and bath is small, but efficiently spaced that you really won’t feel cramped when using it. The water closet and shower has their own stalls, so the central area remains dry. Hot water is also readily available. As previously mentioned, there is no bidet.

I have also previously stayed at their Balcony Stateroom , and it is more spacious than the former. Most of the features are the same including the toilet and bath, but the room has an extra space for a mini living area where a small sofa is located. And of course, it has a balcony that looks out to the sea.

For people with deeper pockets, The Palace is the perfect cruise accommodation. It’s an exclusive boutique hotel right within the ship complete with room butlers, private lounge, pool, and dining area. Situated at the stern or back part of the ship, this is where most of the Resorts World One suites—the most expensive and elegant rooms—are located.

INTERNET CONNECTION

Resorts World One provides paid satellite Internet Wi-Fi connection. They have Standard and Premium, which has options for a single up to four devices connected simultaneously. Rates start from HKD 118.00.

During our cruise, we were provided with a Premium 1 Device Wi-Fi connection . It’s easy to connect to and the whole ship is superbly covered. Internet speed is decent enough, I was able to do videocalls with my son in the Philippines even on high seas. One can also use the Wi-Fi service on other devices like laptops, you simply have to log out of your phone, then reconnect using your laptop.

WHAT TO DO ON A RESORTS WORLD ONE CRUISE

You probably know that there are tons of things one can do while on a cruise ship—and that’s not even counting the shores excursions. But just to be sure, I’ll let you in on what you can really expect and what you can really do on a Resorts World One Cruise.

SWIM & LOUNGE

You definitely won’t get bored when inside Resorts World One. The main attraction of the ship is the Greek-inspired Parthenon Pool at the ship’s topside. The mini-lap pool is surrounded on its corners by four hot Jacuzzi tubs and features a water slide—although it really doesn’t land on the pool itself.

WATCH MOVIES & THEATER SHOWS

Every night, the 800-seater Zodiac Theater hosts free shows for cruise guests, and shows movies during the day. During our cruise, we watched all three night shows they featured; Crew Show (song and dance), Love Matters (dating game), and Mesmerise (dance and magic show)—all three were entertaining, even if the second one was in Chinese, lol.

PLAY FUN GAMES

Resorts World One has a slew of arcade, console, and even board games for all kinds and levels of gamers on board. For more serious games, they also have a Mahjong Lounge and casinos. The central hall also turns into a bingo hall every night. And afterwards, a giant videoke lounge. They also host live bands and talks during the day. For kids and toddlers, they have the Little Dreamers Club , a play area where one can let your kids play safely for a couple of hours while moms and dads relax.

GET FIT, GET PAMPERED

Let’s be honest, you probably won’t be able to help but overeat when on a cruise. And to keep fit, Resorts World One has a gym, a jogging track, basketball court, an endless pool—a small pool with adjustable current to swim against on—and a traditional swimming pool. Those are probably enough to burn all those extra calories you might consume. The ship also has a salon and a spa, should you feel the need to get extra pampered at high sea.

GO SHOPPING

Resorts World One has two main shopping corridors, Candy Kingdom for your chocolates and snack pasalubongs , and The Boutiques for your luxury needs. They also hold a special sale along the main hall during the evenings.

WHERE TO EAT INSIDE RESORTS WORLD ONE

To add to the list of things to do on a Resorts World One Cruise—eat! The ship has, not one, but seventeen, yes, seventeen full restaurants and food booths inside its hall. These are divided into two categories, the Inclusive Restaurants where you can eat free of charge, and the Premium Restaurants where you have to pay extra to dine.

INCLUSIVE RESTAURANTS

Resorts World One has three inclusive restaurant; The Lido & Lido Grill for Chinese and Western cuisine buffet, Dream Dining Room for plated multi-course Western lunches and dinners, and Pavillion for plated multi-course Chinese lunches and dinners. Dream Dining and Pavillion also host buffet breakfasts, by the way.

The biggest of the three is The Lido, so most people head there to eat. It also hosts an afternoon snack buffet, and a midnight snack buffet.

Note that you can only eat on one inclusive restaurant every meal time. Example, you ate breakfast at The Lido, and decided to eat again at either Dream Dining Room, or at the Pavillion, or even at The Lido again—an extra charge would be incurred on your card.

PREMIUM RESTAURANTS

If you crave for a different cuisine other than Chinese and Western, Resorts World One also has other premium restaurants you can dine on; Blue Lagoon for South East Asian dishes, Hot Pot for, well, hotpots, Silk Road for Chinese specialties, Seafood Grill at the upper deck for an outdoor grill experience, and Umi Uma for Japanese.

There are also food booths around the ship, like Matcha Ice , Gelateria , and Lobby Café at the lobby area.

SHORE EXCURSIONS

One of the highlights of a cruise experience are, of course, the destinations. For the Resorts World One Hong Kong – Taiwan Cruise, this is Kaohsiung City and Penghu County—locales along the southwestern and western parts of Taiwan, respectively. Note that shore excursions are not included on the original cruise fee and must be purchased separately. Alternatively, one can also opt not to get the shore excursion package and do a DIY tour of the destination instead. This is allowed, provided that you board the ship at the appointed time, or risk getting left behind. Before disembarking you need to claim the stamped copy of your passport from the ship’s crew. They will still keep your original passport.

KAOHSIUNG SHORE EXCURSION ITINERARY

The largest and most populous city along Southern Taiwan, Kaohsiung City is about five hours away from Taipei by bus. It’s our first shore excursion destination.

Upon boarding down the ship, we rode a toy train to our lunch destination; Banana Riverside Group Restaurant for a delectable seafood lunch. We then proceeded to the nearby Warehouse No.2 , a port warehouse turned into an industrial-style mall for a bit of shopping before boarding a ten-minute ferry to Cijin Island.

On Cijin Island , we climbed Mount Cihou , which is more of a hill than a mountain, and visited the 19th century Kaohsiung Lighthouse and Cihou Fort . Going down, the other side of the hill brought us to Cijin Beach . It’s no Boracay , the sand is gray, but it has giant sand sculptures across the beach—so it’s pretty unique. From there, the Qi Jin Old Street beckoned to us with its seafood and street food stalls.

Back in mainland Kaohsiung, we rode the train to Echo Across the Harbor , a bell art installation along the port, onto more warehouses converted into outlet stores, then to the Great Harbour Bridge —an architectural marvel. It’s a pedestrian bridge that turns sideways, whenever a ship needs to pass along the water—the first of its kind in Taiwan. We passed a few more warehouses, which has been converted into art houses before heading to the Liuhe Night Market for more streetfood. You simply cannot visit Taiwan and not go to a night market.

We were dead tired when we got back to the ship, but it was an extremely rewarding shore excursion. For DIY travelers, this Kaohsiung shore excursion itinerary is very doable.

PENGHU COUNTY SHORE EXCURSION ITINERARY

Located on the western side of Taiwan, Penghu County is a provincial destination composed of ninety islands and islets. It is the smallest county in Taiwan.

Our day started at seven in the morning with the Resorts World One anchoring away from the harbor. We then road a smaller ferry to land at Magong Harbor. On a mini bus, we went straight to Penghu’s Tianyu Temple , the oldest Mazu Temple in the whole of Taiwan, before proceeding to MaGung Delicacies which specializes in brown sugar cakes —read, free taste, lol.

We enjoyed the quiet scenery of Penghu for half an hour, passing windmills and pine-laden roads, before alighting at the Daguoye Columnar Basalt . These are towering hexagonal natural basalt rock formation somewhat similar to Ireland’s The Giant’s Causeway. After some photo ops, we proceeded to explore the Erkan Traditional Village where some of the oldest houses in the county can still be found. Then a quick stop at the entrance of the Penghu Great Bridge , before having seafood lunch at the Festival Hotel near the port. We were back at the Resorts World One by two in the afternoon, at which time, it promptly left port.

The Penghu shore excursion was much more relaxed than the first one, but no less interesting. For DIY travelers, this Penghu County shore excursion itinerary is a bit hard to do, since the places visited are quite far from each other.

OTHER TAIWAN SHORE EXCURSIONS

Besides those two we did, there are more shore excursions in Resorts World One. Currently there are six shore excursions in Kaohsiung, and three in Penghu.

Kaohsiung Shore Excursions: Discovery Tour with Night Market • Scenic Cijin Island Kaohsiung Tour • Kaohsiung Highlights • The Best of Tainan • Be My Guest @ My Pineapple Farm • Kaohsiung Shopping & Gourmet Tour

COVID-19 SAFETY INSIDE RESORTS WORLD CRUISES

Even with the pandemic almost over, Resorts World Cruises still take multiple precautions in preventing the COVID-19 virus from spreading. While Resorts World Cruises doesn’t require guests to be vaccinated, they ensure that all the crews working within the ship are tested free of COVID-19 before signing up for active duty. There is also no air recirculation within the ship, the air being circulated is 100% external fresh air. Protocols and isolation wards are also set in case infection occurs within the ship. They have medical facilities, medical officers, and an infection control officer to handle emergencies. During our stay, I observed numerous alcohol dispensers all throughout the ship and crews disinfecting floors. I also noticed that all the crews wear facemask all the time. As a testament, after a four-day cruise, I never experienced any indication of the flu.

PRACTICAL CRUISING TIPS

Here are a few simple tips and guide to make your cruise more enjoyable, especially for first timers. These are from my own experience riding a cruise, during my past trips and this most recent one. Read on and cruise like a pro.

• The most popular restaurant on Resorts World One is The Lido, it’s almost always full of diners especially on breakfast and dinner. An alternative breakfast place is Dream Dining Room, it serves almost the same dishes as the Lido, which is Western and Chinese dishes, sans the crowd. • Dream Dining is also excellent for dinner, they serve multi course meal. Be sure not to miss it. • The best spot for eating is at The Lido Grill, the open-air deck beside The Lido where you get an open view of the sea. Most people miss this, well, I did too the first time. • You can check the dishes being offered on the restaurants before actually committing and having your card swiped. Just ask the person manning the door nicely. • If you want to use the pool, go early. It gets pretty full at around midday. It opens at about 7:45AM, and there’d be zero people. Everyone’s either still asleep or at the buffet table. It also empties out during dinner time. So, swim while everyone’s eating. • Get to the top deck as the ship approaches and leaves port, it’s always the most scenic time during the cruise. • During lull times, when the ship is at high sea, try to explore each nooks and crannies of the ship. I’ve been to this ship before, but was surprised to find places I haven’t been to. The best way to explore is by going from the bottom floor, going to the top deck. Use the map on the elevator lobbies as guides. • If you have a water bottle, you can fill that with cold water, hot coffee, or orange, mango, and apple juice from The Lido buffet. Which, you can then use inside your room or bring with you to shore excursions. • If you must, bring a small bag where you can stash a change of clothes. This will come in handy when you check in your luggage during boarding, since it will be hours before you receive it back. And during the last day of the cruise, since they will collect your check in baggage the night before your check out date. With this, you’re free to take a bath even without your baggage with you.

FINAL THOUGHTS

We’ve all heard that cruises are for older people. In some cases, that might really be true, since joining a cruise is easy and totally relaxed—perfect indeed for people who need not exert much effort to explore places. But a cruise is also perfect for a family vacation, even with toddlers! I kept picturing my three-year old son and my wife with me all throughout the cruise. This is also perfect for group of friends, wanting something different and more luxurious For foodies, this is heaven. Not only do you get to have almost unlimited dishes served from the inclusive restaurants, but you also get to try various cuisines from the premium restos, and of course, the dishes from the places you visit on shore excursions. But joining a cruise is expensive, you might say. Well, not really. If you think about having buffet five times daily, access to gym and swimming pool, daily theater shows, a visit to another country with zero effort, and the unique experience of living inside a cruise ship, then it’s totally worth it. And time your booking with their promos and discounts, and it gets even better.

May I know what kind of adapter plug I need to bring on the ship? thanks!

Hi Carmen, Resorts World One has a three-pin universal outlet that accepts most, if not all, types of electrical plugs. So, there’s really no need to bring a travel adaptor.

Resort World One was previously Explorer Dream with Dream Cruises. It was SuperStar Virgo with Star before that. I sailed on her in both guises. The bit I find unusual is the one meal rule. On Australian ships you can have a meal in the dining room and then have more in the buffet. But on this ship you need to check the menus carefully because if you choose one venue and don't like the food you can't then go somewhere else (unless you pay).

Indeed. I remember sailing on Superstar Virgo before, and as far as I can recall, they also don't have that one meal rule. Anyways, it is possible to check out the buffet spread first before committing to the restaurant.

2024 Resorts World One HONG KONG CRUISE Guide for First Timers

2024 Resorts World One HONG KONG CRUISE Guide for First Timers

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to go on a cruise?

No other travel style can match the comfort and pampering one could enjoy aboard a cruise ship. While most cruises are indeed expensive and luxurious, some are definitely more affordable, making them the perfect entry point for those who wish to try it for the first time. Thankfully, there’s one one super accessible cruise experience that awaits you not too far away — Resorts World One in Hong Kong .

Over the past 6 months, we have sailed aboard Resorts World One: one was a familiarization trip with PAL, and we loved it so much that as soon as we got home, we booked again and paid for everything, this time with our family. In this article, I’m sharing with you every info that I have gathered from our past two sailings.

Resorts World One Cruise Ship

Save these Essential Links! Before I begin getting down to the nitty gritty of joining a Resorts World One cruise, here’s a list of links that you might want to save for easy reference in the future. Where to book Resorts World One Hong Kong Cruise (Klook). Where to book Hong Kong hotels , if you need extra days in Hong Kong before or after your cruise. Where to book flights to Hong Kong . On our first cruise, we flew with Philippine Airlines because the timing was great. On our second cruise, we flew with HK Express.

Tempted to join a cruise aboard Resorts World One? Here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

BOOKING A CRUISE

Resorts World One ‘s home port is Hong Kong . This means that each sailing starts and ends here, which is excellent because not only is Hong Kong accessible, it’s also a fantastic destination packed with family-friendly attractions. You could also have a grand time before or after the cruise. It’s also quite easy to find budget-friendly flights to Hong Kong.

Resorts World One Hong Kong Cruise

From Hong Kong, the ship will sail to another destination (in most cases). Depending on what route you choose, you could also explore a completely different destination in another country like Vietnam, China, or Japan .

On our first cruise, our itinerary was Hong Kong-Vietnam. But on our most recent cruise, we sailed from Hong Kong to Sanya in Hainan Island, China.

How to book a Hong Kong cruise?

You can book a Resorts World One cruise on Klook. Just visit the Klook website or app .

What are the available routes?

Resorts World One currently plies multiple routes, starting in Hong Kong and making stops (ports of call) in these destinations:

  • Okinawa, Japan (5 nights)
  • Nha Trang and Da Nang, Vietnam (5 nights)
  • Manila and Boracay, Philippines (5 nights)
  • Sanya, China (2 nights or 3 nights)

If you’re more interested in the ship rather than another destination, you could also go on a 2-night weekend getaway aboard Resorts World One. The ship will be in high seas the entire time and won’t be making any stop elsewhere. It will just sail back to Hong Kong after. This is also the most budget-friendly option, making it ideal for those who just want to try cruising.

In total, we have cruised on this ship four times. Aside from our most recent trips (2024 and 2023), we have been onboard twice before, back when it was still Superstar Virgo , which was designed with the Asian market in mind. In 2019, after a major refit, it was reintroduced as Explorer Dream . Most recently, after Resorts World Cruises took over operations, it is now known as Resorts World One, with Hong Kong as its homeport for now.

Resorts World One Main Pool Area

I didn’t realize it at first. The makeover gave it a new, fresher, cleaner look. But its heart and soul remain the same. Resorts World One’s workforce is 80% Filipinos, which are undoubtedly the best workers both in seafaring and hospitality industries. This also makes it an ideal first-time cruise experience for Pinoys. While the majority of the market is from Hong Kong and mainland China, being surrounded by Pinoy staff will make you feel right at home.

How much is a Resorts World One cruise?

You could go on a cruise for as low as HKD 1250 (USD 159.75, PHP 9080) per person , as of this writing.

This rate is for one person who is part of a group of four (4), staying in an Interior Room, on a 2-night Hong Kong-Sanya sailing. The price of the Interior room including port charges for 4 pax is HKD 5000 (USD 639, PHP 36,320) . Divide that by four, and you’ll get the price above.

Klook Hong Kong Cruise Booking 4 pax

If you’re a couple or a group of two (2), the cheapest I found is an interior room also on a Hong Kong-Sanya sailing at HKD 3400 per room (USD 434.52, PHP 24,690). Per person, that’s HKD 1700 (USD 217.26, PHP 12,345) .

Klook Hong Kong Cruise Booking 2 pax

Here’s a summary:

Hong Kong-Sanya 2N Cruise Interior Room

  • If good for 4: HKD 5000 per room (HKD 1250 per person)
  • If good for 2: HKD 3400 per room (HKD 1700 per person)

These are the cheapest rates I found at the moment. But note that the price of the cruise depends on four factors: the booking date, the travel date, the route, and the stateroom you choose.

Let’s talk about booking dates first. Much like flights, pricing is dynamic. Cruise companies, especially Resorts World Cruises, like giving away discounts and other freebies. For example, right now, there is an Early Bird promo wherein you could have a third or fourth guest join for free . This is how I’m able to afford to cruise with family!

Different travel dates have different prices, too. Expect the dates surrounding Christmas and Chinese New Year to cost significantly higher than others.

The route matters as well. In general, longer routes cost more.

Finally, the stateroom you select determines the price of your booking.

For the latest rates, do a mock booking using the Klook website or app .

What is the best room to book?

There are four main types of accommodations aboard Resorts World One:

  • Interior Stateroom : smallest, no window
  • Oceanview Stateroom : with a window allowing a view of the sea
  • Balcony Stateroom : with a balcony
  • The Palace suites : the most luxurious options

We’ve experienced all these rooms except the suites: Interior, Balcony, and Oceanview.

Resorts World Cruise Balcony Stateroom

The Balcony Stateroom gives the best value for money. It’s not too big or too small. The balcony adds more space to move around. The Oceanview Room is good, too.

But if you have just enough budget for an Interior Room, go for it . Don’t drop the idea of cruising altogether just because you can’t afford the best rooms. In my experience, we spent most of our time outside the room — going on shore excursions, pigging out at the restaurants, and exploring other amenities.

Ocean View Room Resorts World One for 3 Pax

Whatever stateroom you choose, even though you could book any of these for up to 4 guests, I highly recommend that you limit the number of guests to only 3 per room. I feel like four is “too cozy”. The fourth person’s bed is positioned awkwardly, blocking the way to the door and the restroom, which can restrict your movement. Trust me, I’ve tried the 4-pax room sharing before.

Each room is equipped with slip-on sandals, bath robes, and toiletries. If you’re not married to particular shampoo, soap or toothpaste brands, you may use what’s provided.

What’s included in the booking?

When you book a Resorts World One cruise, you already pay for the following:

  • accommodations
  • port charges (charged per person)
  • access to amenities like pool, gym, lounges
  • nightly entertainment including shows at the Zodiac Theatre
  • ALL meals at the 3 inclusive restaurants onboard

Yes, ALL MEALS — breakfast, lunch, dinner — provided that you dine at any of the three complimentary restaurants, which are The Lido (buffet), The Pavilion (Chinese), and Dream Dining (Western and Chinese menus). Technically, it’s unlimited, even at the non-buffet places. I’ll explain it in more detail in the Dining section below.

What’s NOT included in the booking?

  • Airfare to Hong Kong
  • Mandatory gratuities at HKD 150 per night per person
  • For Okinawa sailings ONLY: International tourist tax, HKD 55 (JPY 1000) per person
  • For Sanya sailings ONLY: Visa handling fee, HKD 15 (PHP 110) per person
  • Meals at specialty restaurants

And of course, other purchases onboard like massage and shopping.

How to book flights to Hong Kong for your cruise?

Philippine Airlines NAIA Terminal 1

Several airlines fly from the Philippines to Hong Kong, making it one of the most accessible destinations for Pinoys.

Before you book, it’s best to compare flights .

For those joining a cruise, Philippine Airlines offers some of the most ideal flights. The timings are great, with morning HK-bound flights that arrive just in time for cruise boarding (usually done in the afternoon) and evening return flights to the Philippines.

If you decide to fly on the same day of ship embarkation and disembarkation, these flights will give you plenty of allowance. As of this writing, here’s PAL’s Hong Kong schedule:

Manila to Hong Kong (ETD-ETA)

  • 7:50 – 10:15 — most ideal
  • 10:10 – 12:25
  • 15:15 – 17:40
  • 19:00 – 21:25

Hong Kong to Manila (ETD-ETA)

  • 11:30 – 13:40
  • 13:25 – 15:35
  • 19:20 – 21:25
  • 22:45 – 00:55 (+1 day) — most ideal

Because different routes may have different timetables and changes to the schedule may happen, always double check the cruise ship’s latest boarding/disembarkation times before you book your flight .

We flew with Philippine Airlines on our most recent Hong Kong-Vietnam cruise this year and also on our Singapore-Malaysia cruise last year. One thing I really appreciate is the generous baggage allowance that automatically comes with each booking. For Hong Kong flights, check-in baggage can weigh 35 kg maximum for Economy passengers (30 kg for Economy Saver). That should cover all your cruise #OOTDs and pasalubong.

PAL Baggage Allowance Hong Kong

You also get a 7-kg carry-on baggage allowance on top of it.

Often, although some flights with low-cost carriers really do appear cheap, when you start adding baggage allowance, the total cost gets close (sometimes even exceeding) PAL’s prices.

Another reason we prefer PAL is its four-star service that matches the pampering and comfort that cruises are known for. We can always rely on PAL to serve delicious inflight meals and unlimited drinks on board, already included in the booking. On our last trip, the chicken sausages and chicken rice were yum yum!

Philippine Airlines Service

That said, it’s always good practice to book a flight scheduled at least a day ahead of the sailing date. For example, if your cruise starts on a Monday, fly to Hong Kong on Sunday or earlier for your peace of mind. But if you choose to go that route, you’ll also need to book a hotel in Hong Kong. Speaking of hotels…

Before your cruise, what are the requirements when boarding resorts world one.

Before your trip, make sure you have the following documents:

  • Valid passport
  • 2 photocopies of your passport’s bio page (same size, not enlarged)
  • Cruise booking confirmation (printed or digital)
  • HKD, USD, or credit card: The default currency onboard is HKD, but USD is accepted, too.

If you book with Klook, you will be sent a list of requirements and other reminders 3 days before your sailing date.

Check in online. To do that, just visit this page .

Is a visa needed for Okinawa and Sanya when arriving by cruise ship?

For Philippine-passport holders, no need to apply for a visa, even for Okinawa (Japan) and Sanya (China). The policy applies to tourists arriving and departing via the same cruise ship.

However, you must settle the international tourist tax (JPY 1000/pax) for Okinawa and the handling fee (HKD 15/pax) for Sanya.

These policies might change, so double check with the authorities first before your trip.

Is a visa needed for Vietnam?

NO. Vietnam is visa-free for Philippine passport holders.

What to pack for your cruise

Each passenger can bring onboard a maximum of two (2) pieces of luggage, up to 25 kg each . Each bag must fit inside the cabin comfortably.

Bring clothes that will cover all your days and nights onboard. Personally, when I go on a cruise, I typically pack two sets of outfit per day: one casual set for exploring during the day, and another smart casual set for night time activities.

Hong Kong Cruise What to Wear

Each room also has sets of robes and indoor slippers. I wear these robes when I sleep, so I don’t bring additional clothes to sleep in. While each room is provided toiletries, I like using my own skincare, bath, and dental products.

Most ports of call are in the tropical zone, so the climate is pretty consistent. But Hong Kong experiences four distinct seasons. Bring light clothes from May to October, and warmer clothes from November to April.

What NOT to bring onboard?

  • weapons, firearms, ammunition, explosives, and incendiary devices
  • inflammable and dangerous items of any kind
  • extension cord
  • live animals of any kind
  • any alcoholic drink, intoxicating liquor or beverage

Is there a dress code?

Casual . Unlike some cruises that require semi-formal or at least smart casual in certain areas of the ship, Resorts World One is pretty casual all over.

T-shirt and shorts are generally accepted everywhere. A few restrictions are implemented at some restaurants and establishments, mostly prohibiting slippers or flip-flops and swim suits.

That said, it wouldn’t hurt to dress up and achieve your #OOTD goals. We packed at least 2 sets of garments a day: one set of light clothes for touring, and another for the evening shows.

ON BOARDING DAY

Where is the resorts world one cruise terminal in hong kong.

Kai Tak Cruise Terminal Hong Kong

Resorts World One uses the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in Hong Kong. Here’s the full address with contact numbers:

  • Kai Tak Cruise Terminal 33 Shing Fung Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong +852 3465 6888 (Monday-Friday: 09:30-12:30, 13:30-18:00)

How to Get to Kai Tak Cruise Terminal

Here’s how to get from the Hong Kong International Airport to Kai Tak Cruise Terminal:

  • At the Airport Ground Transportation Center, board Bus A29 , bound for Tseung Kwan O (Po Lam). Travel time: roughly 1 hour. Fare: HKD 44.
  • Alight at Ngau Tau Kok Station (Kwun Tong Road).
  • Transfer to Bus 5R , bound for Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. Travel time: 25 minutes. Fare: HKD 7.7.
  • Get off at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal stop.

Yes, the bus is the easiest mode of transportation because Bus 5R stops right in front of the cruise terminal building.

There are a few more bus routes that you could take to reach the cruise terminal, but the A29 and 5R combination is the most convenient and entails the easiest transfer.

Bus 5R Hong Kong

Taking the MTR will involve multiple transfers and you’ll still end up taking the bus or taxi. The nearest MTR stop is Kai Tak MTR Station, which is a 45-minute walk away from the terminal building.

If you prefer taking a cab, taxi fare is around HKD 310 plus baggage surcharges.

How to check in and board the ship?

Baggage Check in Kai Tak Cruise Terminal

  • Check in your bags. Upon arrival at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal’s dropoff area, walk farther into the parking area and you’ll find the baggage check-in queue. Present your passport and they will collect your bags and tag them accordingly. You’ll also be given a claim stub with your last name. The staff will take the bags straight to your room.
  • Enter the terminal building and follow the signs pointing to the check-in area. It’s located on the upper level. Find the check-in counters and fall in line.
  • Check in. Present your cruise booking confirmation and passport. You’ll be handed the following: – room card , indicating your deck number and stateroom number. DO NOT LOSE THIS CARD. It serves as your room key and your credit card. If you need to access some of the facilities or purchase anything on board, you’ll be using this card. – an assembly slip , indicating your assembly station number. – landing card , only if applicable to your route Should there be changes to the itinerary, you will be informed here.
  • Clear Immigration check. Once you’re checked in, follow the signs to the Immigration counters. You’ll need to present your passport and the departure card (the other page of the form you accomplished upon arrival in Hong Kong).
  • Board the vessel. Take the escalators down and queue for boarding. Present your mag card. The staff will also collect your passport, which will be returned to you at the end of the cruise.
  • Find your assembly station. Your assigned station number is indicated on the slip handed to you upon check in. Just follow the directions of the staff along the way.
  • Wait for your room to be ready. It may take a couple of hours, so have lunch at one of the three complimentary restaurants in the meantime. After a few hours, proceed to your stateroom. You should see your suitcase/bags right outside your door.

Don’t forget to attend drill or watch the safety demo.

That’s it. Enjoy your room and explore the rest of the ship!

DURING SAILING

What are the restaurants and other dining options on resorts world one.

Resorts World One has three (3) inclusive restaurants. You could dine at any of these complimentary restaurants without additional charge . All these serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

  • The Lido Buffet . The most popular, located on Deck 12, just behind the Parthenon Pool. No reservations needed.
  • Dream Dining . Western and Chinese cuisines.
  • The Pavilion Room . Family-style Chinese restaurant.

Both Dream Dining and the Pavilion offer full-course meals (appetizer, soup, main course, dessert) with limited selection of drinks, usually coffee and tea. Other drinks will be charged to your room.

Appetizer Duck Breast Dream Dining Resorts World Cruise

Aside from inclusive restos, there are also specialty dining options. At these restaurants, any order will be charged to your room.

We were able to try the following:

Umi Uma Donburi Set Resorts World One

  • Umi Uma Japanese (donburi and sushi) Deck 8 Mid – We ordered donburi delights. Each order is composed of two main dishes and sides. I had chirashi don and tori katsu don.
  • Blue Lagoon Asian dishes Deck 7 Mid, just beside the main lobby – We didn’t get to sample much of the menu because we would go here for the drinks. We got to try the salted egg fish skin, which we couldn’t get enough of!
  • Matcha Ice Matcha-flavored drinks and desserts Deck 7 Mid, just beside Blue Lagoon – I had the matcha caramel latte (HKD 35). The matcha flavor was a bit more subtle than I expected. I also got to try the matcha brownie.

Matcha Mochi Ice Cream Umi Uma

Other food establishments that are available but we didn’t get to try include:

  • Mozarella Ristorante and Pizza Italian pizza bar Deck 7 Mid
  • Silk Road Chinese food, fine dining Deck 7 Mid
  • Palm Court Lounge with view and access to the Captain’s Bridge observation room Served drinks and a few snacks Deck 12 Fwd
  • Seafood Grill Mostly drinks, with live music at night Deck 13 Fwd, above the Parthenon Pool

Some sailings also do a BBQ Night , where the parthenon pool area on Deck 12 turns into a giant barbeque party. It’s buffet-style with no extra charge, too.

What are the attractions and activities on board?

Zodiac Theatre Resorts World Cruise

  • Zodiac Theatre , one of the best assets of Resorts World One is its nightly shows, mostly a variety of graceful dances and daring exhibitions. They’re incredibly entertaining, especially the Rhythm and Balance show on the first night. Some performances showcase the talents of the ship’s crew. It has 800 seats so you may simply walk in without a reservation. But we still recommend arriving early to get the best middle seats. Deck 7 Aft.
  • Parthenon Pool , the centerpiece of the main pool deck. Its Greek theme is a remnant of its Superstar Virgo days, but the entire area is painted white almost all over, giving it a cleaner, classier look. It’s open to everyone. Located on Deck 12.

Parthenon Pool Resorts World One Cruise

  • Caesar’s Slide , a loooong, swirling slide with some transparent parts, making it more exciting. It’s located next to the Parthenon pool. Deck 12.
  • The Boutiques , lanes of duty-free shops on Decks 7 and 8, selling mostly fashion accessories and jewelry.

The Boutiques Shopping at Resorts World Cruise

  • ESC Experience Lab . The ship’s arcade. Enjoy your favorite games and virtual reality thrills.
  • The Zone. If you’d rather play board games and console games instead.

ESC Experience Lab

  • RW@Sea . If you’re interested in the other type of “gaming”, if you know what I mean. Deck 7 and 12.
  • Gym . We packed gym clothes but we failed to use them because we would already average 15,000 steps per day just by joining the shore excursions.
  • Captain’s Observation Lounge , a mini-museum below Palm Court, where you could learn more about the ship and see the captain and his officers at work on the Captain’s bridge.

Captain's Bridge Resorts World Cruise

  • Grand Piazza. This is the ship’s main lobby. Some times, it hosts bingo games; other times, a karaoke music night venue. It also transforms into an open cinema on some days. And on the last day of sailing, it’s where the ship’s grand sale happens where up to 80% discounts are up for grabs.

Grand Sale Resorts World Cruise

What are shore excursions?

Tour Bus in Vietnam Shore Excursions Resorts World Cruise

This is the part where you can get off the ship and explore the ports of call (city where it is docked).

Depending on your route, Resorts World One may stop at the following:

  • Nha Trang and Da Nang in Vietnam
  • Sanya in Hainan, China
  • Manila and Boracay in the Philippines
  • Naha and Miyakojima in Okinawa, Japan

Note: The 2N Hong Kong Weekend Getaway sailing does not make any port of call.

At every stop, Resorts World One offers various pre-arranged tours called Shorex (shore excursions). But you’re not required to book with them. You could also pull a DIY (do it yourself). It’s completely up to you.

  • If you book a shorex , you will be joining the rest of the cruise passengers who booked that tour. The great thing about it is that you have everything taken care of for you. You will have a tour guide and a few members of the crew will join the group. They will make sure you’re back at the port in time for sailing. Meals are also often included.
  • If you pull a DIY , you have complete control of your time and it’s going to be cheaper. However, make sure you’re back by the prescribed time because the ship will NOT wait for you.

What to remember when getting off the ship for an excursion?

Whether you’re exploring independently or joining a shore excursion, take note of the cut-off time . It’s also displayed on the screens all over the ship. It changes per stop. READ IT, UNDERSTAND IT, REMEMBER IT. Bear in mind that the time zone may also change, so keep the ship’s time in mind. You have to be back on board before that cut-off time.

Shorex Resorts World Cruise

You won’t have your passport with you when you get off the ship, so make sure you have the following with you:

  • stateroom card
  • a photocopy of your passport
  • landing card (if applicable)

Landing Card for Vietnam Resorts World Cruise

You’ll also need your stateroom card when boarding the ship again, so don’t forget it.

CHECKING OUT & DISEMBARKATION

What to do before the end of the cruise.

Most of the time (but not all the time), disembarkation is done in the morning you arrive in Hong Kong. But for a smoother disembarkation experience, there are some things you’re advised to do the day before.

  • Claim your passport. The day before you arrive in Hong Kong, you can claim your passport at the elevator lobby of your deck.
  • Pack your bags. Your check-in bags will be collected on your last night, up to 22:00 (10 pm). Leave it outside your door and the staff will pick it up. I usually pack all my things except the clothes I’d be wearing the next day and some toiletries.
  • Settle your bill. You’ll have to pay the mandatory gratuities or tips and othe purchases you made on board before you disembark. If you feel like you won’t be buying anything else, you could already settle your account the night before to avoid the long queues in the morning.

How to disembark

On the last day, you could still have breakfast while waiting to get off the ship. And when it’s time to disembark, here’s how:

  • Go to Deck 7 and follow the instructions of the staff to the gangway. Upon exiting, a staff member will scan your stateroom card or your passport.
  • Undergo immigration check for arrival clearance. You’ll be re-entering Hong Kong, so you’ll be facing another Immigration Officer.
  • Once cleared, make your way to the luggage claim area and pick up your bags. The bags are sorted by deck. Most bags look alike, so double check if you have the right one.

Because of this, you’re not required to give any more tips to the staff. That said, if the service of the waiter at a restaurant or your room attendant has been more than satisfactory, feel free to tip. I’m sure it would be appreciated by the staff.

What type of electrical sockets are used on board Resorts World One?

The ship is equipped with universal 220V outlets that can accommodate most types of plugs. It looks like this:

USB ports are also available.

How to get back to airport from the cruise terminal?

Here’s the easiest way to get from the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal to Hong Kong International Airport:

  • Board Bus 5R bound for APM Millennium City 5 (D1). Travel time: 15 minutes.
  • Walk to Tsun Yip Lane ; Kwun Tong Road Bus Stop. It should take around 2 minutes.
  • Ride Bus A29 bound for the airport. Travel time: roughly 1 hours. Fare: HKD 44.
  • Get off at the airport.

What are the attractions near the cruise terminal?

Airside Mall Hong Kong

  • Airside , a brand new 47-story commercial complex including a massive shopping mall housing countless shops, restaurants, and cafes. It also features an immersive exhibition that showcases the history of the district, from its time as Hong Kong’s main airport. It’s a great shopping stop after your cruise and before you hit the airport.

Kai Tak Airport Museum AIrside Hong Kong

  • Kai Tak Sky Garden , an aviation-themed garden featuring over 8- species of plants, mostly trees and shrubs scattered across three zones: the Garden Plaza, the Fountain Plaza, and the Lawn Plaza. It occupies what used to be the Kai Tak Airport’s runway.
  • Kwun Tong Promenade , a scenic 1-km waterfront in New Kowloon, not too far away from the cruise terminal. Here you’ll find an amphitheater, a children’s playground, viewing pavilions and a musical fountain.
  • Nan Lian Garden , a beautiful oasis in the middle of the vast urban jungle that is Hong Kong. It’s a classical Tang-Dynasty-style garden just next to Chi Lin Nunnery. It’s adorned with manicured trees surrounding a tranquil pond straddled by a vermillion bridge that leads to a small pagoda. You’ll also find various galleries inside its buildings. The garden is open from 07:00 to 21:00, but the exhibits are open from 10:00 to 17:00. Entrance is FREE.

Review of Resorts World Cruises Genting Dream Promotion Package on Klook

review-resorts-world-cruises-genting-dream-promotion-package-klook

I have always wanted to try Genting Dream Cruises but my last attempt was unfortunately foiled by Olympia’s illness. When it subsequently filed for a winding-up application, I thought my hopes of ever sailing on it had sank to the abyss as well. After some shrewd corporate restructuring (depending on which side you are on), Dream Cruises returned under a new ownership structure and taken on the parent brand name of Resorts World. As I have been monitoring its cruise ticket prices for some time, I could immediately tell a good promotion if there is one. Acting decisively, I paid approx. an all-in price of S$320 per pax (including port charges and gratuities) for a 4-day 3-night cruise on a balcony stateroom over the Hari Raya Haji long weekend via the Klook platform. Considering that a cruise package is all inclusive (full-board), this is an attractive price that is much cheaper than a hotel staycation in Singapore. This is my review of Resorts World Cruises Genting Dream which also berthed at Port Dickson and Penang during my sailing.

1) Spanking new facilities that are under-utilised

First impression when I stepped foot on the cruise was how new it was. As shown in Diagram 1, the balcony cabin that I stayed in was clean and spacious while the toilet was of a comfortable size as well.

balcony-stateroom-genting-dream

Diagram 1: Balcony stateroom in Genting Dream

Despite being modern facilities, they were strangely under-utilised throughout the cruise. I soon realised that this was because majority of the passengers were there for the casino instead. As a result, my family enjoyed the swimming pool, waterground slides, high ropes obstacle, gym and other facilities to our hearts’ content.

facilities-resorts-world-cruises-genting-dream

Diagram 2: Gym and high-element ropes course

There was minimal need to queue in line or share the facilities with other users. This meant that Olympia could use the Little Dreamer’s Club up to the 2-hour daily limit (chargeable after 2 hours) even though it has a maximum capacity of 18 pax at any 1 time.

kids-class-resorts-world-cruises-genting-dream

Diagram 3: Little Dreamers Club and Aerobic Exercise

Some of the complimentary classes offered had so little attendees it almost felt like a private class at times!

On the contrary, the casino was packed to the rafters with virtually every slot machine taken up during peak hours. Little wonder that the line to sign up for membership was insanely long.

2) Penang stopover

My family really enjoyed the half day spent at Penang. It could have been longer if not for observing the little’s one nap time. Unlike at Port Dickson the day before, Genting Dream called at Port Swettenham directly. This meant that we could disembark and board anytime without having to wait for scheduled tender boats.

Once on land, we avoided all the land tour packages and car rental services as they were severely overpriced. We got around Georgetown with Grab and each trip never cost more than RM15 even with wet weather surcharge! Like most tourists, we went on a food tour and sampled great local hawker fare such as chendol, oyster omelette etc. Of course, we returned to the cruise not only with our stomachs full but also hands full of local goodies and souvenirs.

As a tip for travelling during the Covid pandemic, you will save plenty of time by downloading and registering on the MySejahtera mobile app before departure.

What Can Be Improved

Apart from the positives, I also find that there are certainly areas for improvement for Resorts World Cruises.

1) Check in and Check Out process

We were issued a check-in time of 1pm and expected to check in at this time as I had already completed the online check-in. When we arrived at Marina Bay Cruise Centre promptly at 1pm, we were greeted by 3 long queues outside the departure hall. It didn’t help that passengers with later reporting times were also allowed to join the snaking queues.

We finally received our boarding pass and room keys after waiting for 45 minutes and thought that this marked the end of further waiting. To my disappointment, the operator made all the passengers wait inside the departure hall as the cruise was not ready for boarding. After an almost 2-hour ordeal, we finally reached our staterooms at 3pm.

marina-bay-cruise-centre-singapore

Diagram 5: 2nd round of waiting inside the departure hall

Checking out was an equally cumbersome affair as the operator held everyone up in holding areas before progressively releasing the groups. I understand that this is to stagger the passengers and minimise bottlenecks. However, I felt that this was not completely necessary. Based on my experience cruising with Royal Caribbean , there is usually no congestion as most passengers would have their own preferred times to depart the ship between the 3 or 4-hour window after arrival time.

2) Too many activities/facilities require additional payment

I also found that there were way too many activities and facilities that required additional payment. For instance, I completely understand if a fee per game is levied to bowl in the dark as I imagine that this will be highly popular if it is made free of charge.

bowling-genting-dream

Diagram 6: $10 per player per game for bowling

However, I find it slightly off-putting when fees are being levied for exercise classes, dance parties and performances:

  • $35 fee is charged for HIIT classes in the gym
  • $20 entrance fee to Bollywood Blast Party
  • Up to $80 VIP tickets for Dream Boys Performance.

Let’s not forget that these tickets were also heavily advertised throughout the cruise to ring up sales. I was not entirely convinced and did not part with my money to enjoy these paid attractions.

3) On-board entertainment

During our 4-day cruise, 2 complimentary shows were available at the Zodiac Theatre during our 4-day cruise:

shows-resorts-world-cruises-genting-dream

Diagram 7: 2 complimentary performances/shows on Genting Dream

  • 1) Yin. Yang- At best, this felt like watching (insert Country) Got Talent. At worst, this was a mishmash of disparate performances with no central theme running through it. Think acrobat, face-changing opera, Western pop dance etc.
  • 2) Love Matters – This was really good and helped to salvage the previous night’s disappointment. Interaction was high, genuinely funny and audience was engaged and enrapt throughout.

I am optimistic that with time, Yin.Yang will be better because I have the nagging feeling that the show was hastily put together to accommodate whichever performers/artistes that decided to stay with the new ownership. Overall, I would rate the on-board entertainment a mixed bag.

I always feel that a big part of a cruise experience is about the food although this may not hold true for Genting Dream’s target audience. There are a few plus points when it comes to the food offering on Genting Dream.

lido-dream-dining-room-upper-genting-dream

Diagram 8: Lido Buffet and Dream Dining Room Upper (Chinese tze char)

The Lido is a certified Halal international restaurant which makes Genting Dream a viable option for Muslim travellers. Overall, the Malay and Indian food offered here would be the better cuisines, but I would suggest skipping the Western and dessert sections. Outside of meal times, The Lido also serve snacks but these are largely plain congee or processed food that are deep fried.

Genting Dream whip up good Chinese food at the Dream Dining Room Upper. In the mornings, I also enjoyed dim sum with hot tea. Even though this is a sit-down concept, feel free to order second helpings if the initial round of food is not sufficient.

dream-dining-room-lower-genting-dream

Diagram 9: Dream Dining Room Lower (Western)

Western food is offered at Dream Dining Room Lower and there’s nothing much to shout about. Let’s just say that I have had better omelette at army cookhouse.

Klook Promotion

Bookings for Resorts World Cruises are currently powered on Klook’s platform where the full itinerary for the particular date is available for viewing. My experience redeeming the vouchers was relatively straightforward.

A week before travelling, Klook reminded me to perform online check in . I also arranged for ART tests via the platform. The only negative was that cabin staterooms were randomly allocated. Since I had booked 2 staterooms for my family of 4, I contacted Resorts World Cruises after booking to request for them to be adjacent or at least on the same deck.

klook-resorts-world-cruise-promotion

Diagram 10: Example of an ongoing Resorts World Cruises promotion on Klook (Source: Klook)

Besides taking advantage of the promotion on Klook, I could also triple-stack the following promotions to reduce my purchase price further:

  • Take advantage of ongoing promotion codes – eg: Get $25 off with GrabPay
  • Activate Shopback to receive 3% cashback. Cashback is enhanced during special dates such as 7.7 sale
  • Offset purchase price with existing Klook coins

As a result, I paid an all-in discounted price of $320 per pax for 3 nights of sailing which I consider as a fantastic deal given the food and entertainment that I had on the seacation.

If you miss the klook promotion, you can also enjoy free upgrade from Oceanview to Balcony stateroom and an additional $100 off by paying with any UOB card ( UOB One Card , UOB Evol Card , UOB Absolute Cashback Card )

Finally, do not forget to purchase travel insurance especially now that the cruises will port in other countries. I purchased Starr Travel Insurance Cruise to Nowhere from SingSaver to enjoy $10 PayNow Rewards for premium value below $99.

After this review, I have now officially sailed on Quantum of the Seas , Spectrum of the Seas and Genting Dream to destinations that ranged from “Nowhere” to Malaysia. That should complete the grand slam 😀
