5 Stunningly Scenic UAE Road Trips to try

Are you ready to hit the road this winter and explore more of the United Arab Emirates? Getting behind the wheel is the best way to explore the UAE beyond the big cities.

road trip planner uae

Although not a huge country, once you leave the city, some quite diverse landscapes can be explored in the UAE. No need for a luxury supercar or a 4×4 to complete most of these road trips.

Set your Google Maps, and let’s drive!

If you are setting off in the hotter summer months, make sure you read this important guide to driving in the desert heat to make sure you and your vehicle are prepared.

Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah

Drive time from dubai 2 hours (abu dhabi 3 hours).

Don’t be mistaken into thinking Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah is just for your adventure seekers. Whilst yes, it’s famously home to the world’s longest zip line, incredible Via Ferrata and the Jais Sky Maze, the windy mountainous drive also rewards you with some stunning panoramic views.

The paved road has been extended all the way to the peak now and has a new viewing platform at the 1,934m summit of the UAE’s tallest peak.

road trip planner uae

Temperatures on Jebel Jais can be as much as 10c cooler than on the coast, making it an inviting summer driving option – and conversely, in winter, you may even get to experience snow!

You can complement a drive up to Jebel Jais with a weekend in one of these luxurious RAK Family Resorts.

Staying overnight in RAK may be your preferred option if you want to see the tantalizingly beautiful sunrise from the peak – a truly special memory of your time in the UAE. Just remember you are still looking at about a 1-hour drive from the Al Hamra area of RAK to the peak.

Hatta, Dubai

Drive time from dubai 90 minutes (abu dhabi 2 hours 40 minutes).

A nice easy one for Dubai residents which you can manage in even half a day. Hatta has a really interesting past; actually a Dubai enclave (one of several in the UAE), it sits entirely inside the Emirate of Sharjah -though it was once, in fact, an Omani enclave until the 1850’s!

From the road, you are unlikely to see much of a difference as you pass through the Emirates.

Hatta Dam Dubai

The Hatta Heritage Village has had a significant facelift in recent years and a lot more recreational facilities have been added at Wadi Hub and Wadi Dam. Whilst not all of these are available in the hottest summer months, you can still stop for lunch in town or head to Cafe Gazebo at JA Hatta Fort Hotel. Hatta is a popular mountain escape even in the hotter summer months as it tends to be a few degrees cooler than the city.

If you want to make it an overnight stop, there is everything from camping to glamping and luxury resorts in the winter. The Sedr Trailers and Damani Lodges close from May to October however you can still enjoy family resort JA Hatta Fort Hotel .

Khasab and the Musandam Peninsular, Oman

Driving time from dubai 2.5 hours (abu dhabi 3.5 hours).

Arguably the most stunning of all the drives on this page is the Ras Al Khaimah to Kahsab , Musandam drive. There is a good reason this tiny Omani region has the nickname “Norway of Arabia” with stunning fjords dramatically meeting the sea, yet somehow the road in many places manages to dramatically hang to the cliff faces. It is certainly not a drive for the faint-hearted!

Khasab Road

In the summer months, it is likely to be too hot to get out on the water near the Strait of Hormuz, but there is a small fort and the harbour area to explore in Khasab. You can find our full guide on things to do in Khasab here.

If you set off early it is possible to reach Khasab and back in a day from Dubai, but to truly take in everything this stunning region has to offer, an overnight stay is really essential.

Things to know about driving to Oman from the UAE

Assuming that borders are re-opened between the UAE and Oman, we have a detailed guide of things to consider for a border crossing into the Musandam Peninsula here .

Driving time to Khasab can vary significantly depending on when you are making your crossing. Over popular public holiday weekends, the border crossing process can take much longer so add another hour or two to these time estimates, and some patience!

Jebel Hafeet, Al Ain

Driving time from dubai & abu dhabi 1 hour 50 minutes.

Yet more mountains in the UAE? Yes! Jebel Hafeet proudly stands at 1,240m high and is the highest point in Abu Dhabi Emirate – standing quite separate from the Hajar Mountains that dominate the country’s east coast.

From the city of Al Ain below, you can take on the steep mountain climb to the summit with an incredible 60 turns on this full paved, 3-lane drive. There are plentiful overtaking spots and playpark stops along the way and a small eatery and park at the summit where you can marvel for miles over the open desert plains into Oman.

The winding road up Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi

After your descent from Jebel Hafeet, pop into the lush springs you likely spied from above Green Mubazzarah.

If you’re looking to make an overnight trip of it, the Mecure Grand Jebel Hafeet is the only hotel actually on Jebel Hafeet; otherwise, check out these options for family resorts at reasonable prices in Al Ain .

Liwa Oasis Desert Drive

Drive time from dubai 3 hours, 20 mins (abu dhabi 2 hours 25 mins).

You will want a 4×4 to get the most out of this one, as you will be taken deep into the empty quarter. The summer months can be a little brutal for this excursion, so best arranged in the cooler winter months when camping amongst the dreamy red dunes is possible.

Liwa Oasis Abu Dhabi emirate

If you’re not so keen on pitching a tent, don’t worry, as nearby you can find luxury resorts, including Anantara Qasr al Sarab and Tilal Liwa .

Incredible Road Trips In The UAE For First-Timers

' data-src=

Road-tripping in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) offers an exciting blend of historic attractions, modern marvels, and breathtaking natural landscapes.

Embarking on a road trip through the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is an extraordinary journey that unveils a land of captivating contrasts. From the bustling metropolis of Dubai, where futuristic skyscrapers pierce the sky, to the timeless desert landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see, the UAE offers a road tripper’s paradise.

As you traverse the well-maintained highways and venture off the beaten path, you’ll discover a nation steeped in rich history, adorned with architectural marvels, and graced with natural wonders waiting to be explored. So, fasten your seatbelt and get ready for an exhilarating road trip adventure that will lead you through a tapestry of culture, luxury, and awe-inspiring scenery in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula.

Best Time to Visit the UAE

How to get around in the uae, from dubai to abu dhabi: modern wonders, the northern emirates: mountains, forts, and coastlines, al ain: the garden city and historic oasis, the desert adventure: liwa oasis and the empty quarter, finding fjords in the musandam peninsula.

Situated on the Arabian Peninsula, facing the Persian Gulf to the north and Oman Sea to the east, the United Arab Emirates has a hot, desert climate. With blistering hot summers, undoubtedly, the best time to take a road trip in the UAE is during the milder winter weather, broadly speaking November to April.

During the winter, it is usually clear, bright blue sky days and mild temperatures, rainfall is rare. Should you face thunderstorms or treacherous conditions in the UAE, however, it is best not to hit the roads as flash flooding can occur and many drivers are not used to such conditions, making it hazardous for everyone.

The busiest time of year for visiting the UAE is over the Christmas-New Year break and spring break time (around March and April ); plan accommodation in advance accordingly.

Also, take note of religious occasions such as Ramadan and Eid when planning your UAE visit dates. On public holiday weekends you’ll find the attractions we mention in this article exceptionally busier; if you’re visiting from overseas, Monday to Thursday will be much quieter days to take a road trip around the UAE.

With most public transport in the UAE limited to the big cities and Intercity buses, the best way to truly explore the United Arad Emirates is to hire a car and get out on the road.

We recommend DiscoverCars.Com to search across different providers for a hire car – give it a try here:

It’s important to bear in mind that city driving in Dubai especially can be tough. There are large multi-lane freeways that move FAST, multi-lane roundabouts, truck lanes and fast lanes to think about. Some top pointers for playing it safe on UAE roads:

  • Driving in the UAE is on the right-hand side of the road, the steering wheel on the left.
  • If your drivers licence is not in English or Arabic, you will need an International Drivers Permit.
  • Road signs are all written in English and Arabic.
  • The sign posted maximum speed limits have 20km leeway before you receive a fine, so you will find that traffic in the left-hand lanes will move faster than the posted limits; stick to the middle lane if you’re unsure (the right lanes are usually reserved for slow-moving heavy trucks and buses).
  • Take on board these safety tips for driving in desert conditions if you’ll be leaving the major cities
  • All the drives we explain here can be tackled in an ordinary 2WD vehicle; it’s not recommended to go off-roading into the desert or wadis in the UAE unless you’re with other experienced drivers or as part of a tour.

Best Road Trips in UAE

Although you can set out from anywhere in the UAE to commence your road trip, we will assume you are starting from Downtown Dubai when calculating time and distance.

  • Distance: 140 kms / 87 miles
  • Time Needed: 4 hours to 2 days

Starting with the most popular and easy to reach day trip destination from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital city is home to stunning architecture and thrilling adventures.

The number one attraction in the UAE is visiting the impressive Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Other architecturally brilliant buildings we would recommend include The Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island and Qasr Al Watan, the country’s Presidential Palace.

History buffs, make time in your road trip to see the city’s oldest building Qasr Al Hosn, and for nature lovers, the Jubail Mangrove Walk on Jubail Island is a must-see.

Outside of the city you’ll be glad to have your own wheels to see the more remote parts of the Emirate. Al Wathba Fossil Dunes are fascinating sand dune formations and nearby you’ll find the utterly instargammable Al Wathba Salt Lake – Google Map them for exact pin drops!

And not forgetting the kids, theme park buffs will love a day on Yas Island. With 4 family theme parks including SeaWorld, Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld, you will not run short of kid-friendly activities in Abu Dhabi .

Whilst a simple visit down the road to the Grand Mosque and back could be achieved in under 4 hours on a round trip from Dubai, we recommend you dedicate at least 2 to 3 days of your UAE itinerary to exploring Abu Dhabi if time will allow.

Where to stay: For beach vibes, you want one of the stunning resorts that line Saadiyat Beach , or for convenience to the theme parks and Abu Dhabi Airport, stay on Yas Island .

  • Distance: 113 kms / 70 miles
  • Time Needed: 4 hours to 1-2 days

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), sitting to the northeast of Dubai has earned itself the reputation of the Adventure Emirate. From sea to sky-high mountains (yes, there’s a mountain range in this desert country!) you can enjoy many unique experiences on a trip to Ras al Khaimah.

Whilst perhaps more famous in recent years for its string of fancy waterfront resorts, Ras Al Khaimah is home to the tallest peak in the country Jebel Jais, in the Hajar Mountains which run the entire length of the country’s east coast and all through the east coast of Oman.

Winding mountain road up the tallest peak Jebel Jais in Ras al Khaimah, UAE

The spectacular 30-kilometer tarmacked mountain drive, full of switchbacks and steep inclines is one of the most spectacular scenic driving roads in the country.

Near the peak of Jebel Jais, this is an outdoor adventure lover’s paradise with the opportunity to take on the longest zipline in the world. There are additionally aerial ropes courses, Via Ferrata and many more adrenaline-pumping adventures .

Where to stay: If budget permits, The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah Al Wadi Desert is one of the best desert resorts in the UAE. Closer to the beach, you’ll find a great range of accommodation options on Marjan Island.

  • Distance: 145 kms / 90 miles
  • Time Needed: 6 hours to a full day

The historic Oasis City of Al Ain, also known as the Garden City has a reputation as the birth place of the UAE, where the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed was born.

The drive itself to Al Ain is a relatively straight forward freeway drive from Dubai in around 90 minutes; its the fascinating adventures that await when you arrive make it best to have your own car.

The centre of town is dominated by the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Ain Oasis, a 1,200 hectare shaded park with over 147,000 date palm trees and demonstrating the traditional falaj watering system. Other historic sites dating back to the bronze age are dotted around the city outskirts.

The Al Ain Zoo is also highly acclaimed as one of the cities best attractions. With the addition of a safari a few years ago this makes for a fascinating desert adventure that kids and adults alike will enjoy.

The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre within the zoo is one of the best educational and history resources in the country if you want to learn about the ancient heritage and physical geography of the Arabian Peninsula.

Plenty of other museums also wait you in Al Ain; for history buffs the Al Ain Palace Museum and the Al Jahili Fort are must-stops. You can also check in to the the more modern Qasr al Mawaji , birth home of the former UAE President and ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa.

The highlight for drivers, though, is the climb to the top of Jebel Hafeet, the tallest point in Abu Dhabi Emirate. The steep drive from Green Mubazzarah (a park with natural springs) at the mountain to the peak will take around 30 minutes each way, winding to the top and offering spectacular views over to Oman.

Where to stay: Although a little dated these days, the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet on top of Jebel Hafeet affords you some incredible scenic views. We like the Al Ain Rotana for a good city stay close to the Al Ain Oasis, or adventure seekers will love the glamping options at Jebel Hafit Desert Park.

  • Distance: 335 kilometres / 208 miles
  • Time Needed: full day – overnight

If you’re up for an Arabian Nights style adventure into the desert dunes then this road trip into the Liwa Desert is for you.

It’s not called the Empty Quarter without reason, swathes of desert which make up the vast majority of the land mass of the UAE are only accessible via a few well maintained paved roads that take guests into a complete different side of the Emirates.

Those with a 4WD and the right equipment can take on the vast dunes or for a more sedate experience, try one of the luxury resorts of glamping options to experience the incredibly star lit nights and days.

freshly paves road through the liwa desert

If you feel that any of the landscape looks familiar, the Liwa desert is part of the backdrop for the planet Jakku in Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

NB it’s not recommended to drive in the Liwa Desert in the peak heat of the day, you should look to explore early morning and late afternoons/evenings. Off-roading is only for those who really know what they’re doing sand driving.

Where to stay : Unmissable is a night in Anantara Qasr al Sarab Desert Resort , the ultimate of luxurious desert experiences in the UAE (or anywhere in he world, for that matter). Those on a smaller budget could try spending the night near Madinat Zayed in the Tilal Liwa Desert Retreat , or try the new glamping experience at Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa .

Top Tip : Visiting the western region during the Al Dhafra Festival (dates vary annually but usually around December/January) you could get the opportunity to see a camel beauty pageant! No laughing matter, this is serious business and one for the most unique experiences in the UAE where you will see owners competing for millions In prize money at the coverted Al Mazayan. Watch camels being traded on Millionaires Row and soak in the atmosphere and this traditional Bedouin event

  • Distance: 197 kms / 122 miles

How do you fancy taking on a whole new country during your road trip from Dubai? The drive from Dubai to Khasab on the Musandam Peninsula sees you at the very tip of the Arabian peninsula, just 40 kms from Iran over the Strait of Hormuz!

Despite driving much of the way through the United Arab Emirates, Musandam is actually an exclave of Oman. You will be crossing an international border, so visas and passports will be required and proof of vehicle ownership with permission to cross the border is required (make sure if you’re hiring a car that this is included!)

  • There’s a great detailed guide here exactly how to cross the border into Oman from the UAE

coastal road around a peninsula in Musandam, Oman

Whilst the drive through northern Ras Al Khaimah can feel a little industrial, the moment you cross the Al Darah border, you enter the most incredible coastal journey. The highway winds its way around the rocky khors.

Once you are in Khasab, kick back and relax as life moves a lot slower here. The regional capital is very small, but the starting point of fabulous cruising into the khors (mountainous fjords). You can join a dolphin-watching tour or hire your own private dhow for a serene adventure out on the water, even find your own private beach.

Top Tip: Avoid heading out on this journey Friday afternoon and coming back on a Sunday night as you are you’ll likely encounter long queues at the border crossing when local residents also take to the road. Remember accommodation options are limited so its highly recommended to pre-book if you want to stay overnight in Khasab.

More Tips For Visiting the UAE

  • Check you have the right visa for entering the UAE. Many nationalities can enter the UAE with a free Visa on arrival but don’t get caught out; equally if you’ll be crossing into Oman be aware most nationalities will require a Visa .
  • With the fast-pace nature of construction in the UAE, roads can change quickly! Navigation apps are generally up to date, and you could get by with just Google Maps, though many locally prefer to use Waze as the best navigation app for the UAE ( Google Play | App Store ).
  • Be mindful that you can lose mobile reception once you leave the big towns and major freeways, we recommend you keep an offline map on your phone.
  • If heading beyond the cities, remember to fuel up when you can. Despite being an oil-rich country, you may be surprised there are no fuel stations when you need one in the more remote corners of the country!

Embarking on an adventure trip through the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is like opening a treasure chest of experiences waiting to be discovered. Beyond the glitz of its cities, the UAE reveals a tapestry of landscapes, cultures, and adventures that beckon to the intrepid traveler. From luxurious Dubai, where you can kickstart your journey with exhilarating adventure tours, to the tranquil oasis and pristine coastlines that grace its emirates, the UAE is a playground for exploration and adventure. Whether you crave the thrill of desert safaris, seek underwater marvels, or yearn for a dose of culture, the adventure activities in the UAE offer a canvas of diverse experiences waiting to be painted with your unique stories.

Before embarking on the road trip, plan your trip wisely for the maximum fun and thrill. Keep reading to know the what and how of traversing this beautiful country.

1. Planning your UAE Road Trip

When is the right time to go on a road trip in the uae.

The ideal time for a road trip in the UAE , particularly for adventure tours Dubai and weekend road trips, is during the cooler months of late October to early March. This period offers a more comfortable climate for outdoor exploration, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. Plan your road trip adventure this season to make the most of your UAE experience. It's a perfect window to enjoy road trip destinations in UAE , as you can partake in various outdoor activities, such as desert safaris, hiking, and exploring cultural sites, without the scorching summer heat.

UAE offers a serene escape with an adventure twist. Ideal for adventurous souls and couples preparing for pre-wedding planning and seeking a unique and picturesque backdrop for their special day, consider embarking on off-road desert safaris, hot air balloon rides, and even paragliding to take your road trip to new heights.

How to plan your UAE Itinerary?

Crafting a weekend trip itinerary through the UAE's significant emirates is like painting a canvas of diverse experiences and cultures. Begin your journey from Dubai, a city that never sleeps, with its glittering skyscrapers and bustling souks. Dive into the world of adventure tours in Dubai , trying activities like sandboarding and dune bashing for a thrilling start. Visiting iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa and the Palm Jumeirah can set the tone for a glamorous weekend.

Next, venture to Abu Dhabi, where the grandeur of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the modern marvels of Yas Island beckon. Explore the cultural Sharjah, known for its museums and traditional markets. In Ras Al Khaimah, nature takes the spotlight with its majestic mountains and pristine beaches , ideal for adventure activities in the UAE . Fujairah, another coastal gem, offers scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities for underwater enthusiasts. Cap off your journey in Umm Al Quwain, a tranquil escape, with a visit to the Dreamland Aqua Park and a dose of leisurely relaxation.

What kind of vehicle is suitable for a road trip in the UAE?

When embarking on a road trip in the UAE , especially for adventure tours Dubai , your choice of vehicle matters. The UAE's well-maintained road network makes various vehicles suitable, but for a comfortable experience, consider an SUV or a sedan. These offer ample space for luggage, essential for extended road trips, and ensure a smooth ride on the diverse terrains. If you're planning a more adventurous off-road journey through the desert, renting a 4x4 with robust features is advisable for navigation. • Cultural Respect: Familiarize yourself with local customs and etiquette. For instance, avoid public displays of affection and dress modestly when visiting cultural sites.
  • Local Cuisine: One of the main things to do on a road trip is to try local Emirati dishes. Explore the culinary scene at local restaurants and street vendors.
  • Emergency Contacts: Save emergency numbers in your phone, such as local police and roadside assistance services.

Driving in the UAE can be quite challenging, especially in the cities. Be prepared for busy roads, impatient drivers, and lots of beeping.

The weather in the UAE can be extreme, so make sure you pack sunscreen and plenty of water. You won’t likely have to drive in bad weather, however, as it only rains a few days out of the year (and they do cloud seeding to make this happen!).

The Ultimate Dubai Trip Planner – 1-Day, 3-Day & 5-Day Dubai Itineraries

Things to do in Dubai Dubai Travel Guide Dubai Itineraries

Once a small fishing village in the Middle East, Dubai has grown tremendously over the years and has become the world’s most luxurious vacation spot. Every year, millions of tourists visit this city from all over the world to experience its rich heritage. From sandy beaches to stunning desert dunes, to the world’s largest structures, this city has it all. Whether you are traveling with family, friends, or your partner, you will easily find the right things to do in Dubai. In this Dubai trip planner, you will learn when to visit Dubai, how to get around here, the best day trips from Dubai and more to plan your epic vacation here.

Best Time To Visit Dubai

Dubai

Dubai is warm throughout the year but the winter season (November - March) is the coolest time to visit. The average temperature ranges between 13° and 30°, making it a pleasant time to explore the city. However, this also means that it is the peak season for visitors and everything from flights to accommodation costs is high at this time.

If you are planning to spend most of the time on the beach, then avoid going between January and March as it is the rainy season in Dubai.

For those who hate the heat, it is recommended that they avoid July and August. Although rainfall is unlikely at this time, it tends to be really hot and humid. But you can always get amazing deals and discounts if you choose to visit Dubai in the summers. Read more about the best time to visit Dubai .

Where to stay in dubai.

One of the most important things to do when planning a trip to Dubai is research the place where you will be staying. One thing to keep in mind is that Dubai is big, so you might be close to a few destinations and quite far from some other popular attractions.

So, where do you stay? Well, this depends a lot on your itinerary and the places that you choose to visit in Dubai, not to mention your budget.

If you want to pamper yourself during your Dubai trip and are looking for both fun and entertainment, then Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence area is a good place to consider. This area has plenty of beach spots, restaurants, bars, and skyscrapers for you to enjoy. However, this is also the most expensive place to stay in Dubai.

If you are looking for cheap and budget-friendly accommodations, then check out Al Barsha or Old Dubai. Al Barsha is well-connected to the metro and close to both Downtown and Marina. The only caveat is that it is not close to the main attractions.

For those who wish to stay close to the main attractions, Downtown is one of the best places to stay in Dubai. You are in close proximity to Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and other amazing skyscrapers and is home to several clubs and restaurants. There are both expensive and budget-friendly hotels available here but this place is a little far from the beach.

Want to experience the traditional culture of Dubai? Then choose to stay in Bur Dubai, the heart of Old City. Here, you won’t find fancy restaurants or bars but lots of buildings with traditional architecture, bazaars, narrow alleys, and more. Plus, this place offers the cheapest accommodation rates in Dubai.

Getting Around In Dubai

Getting around the city is not an issue at all because despite Dubai being huge, it offers a decent public transportation system for budget travelers. Dubai metro features 2 lines that connect around 49 stations and a metro train runs every 2-3 minutes. Another viable option is to take the Dubai buses that have 119 internal lines and cover over 80% of the city.

You can also use the Dubai trams that connect Dubai Marina to the Al Sufouh and Palm Jumeirah or the Dubai monorail. Taxi cabs are also easily available in the city but they are quite expensive.

For a traditional experience, you can use the Dubai Abras to cross the water creeks or the Dubai Ferry. All these public transportation options are managed by the RTA and can be availed using the NOL card.If you are planning to stay in Dubai for a couple of days, we recommend you get this travel card. It will not only help you get discounted prices on most of the transportation options but eliminate the need to buy tickets for every trip too.

Dubai to Salalah Road Trip Planner: Everything You Need to Know

This is your practical guide to visiting Salalah from Dubai (UAE) by road . You can also use this Dubai to Salalah road trip planner if you are driving to the Dhofar region from other UAE Emirates or Muscat, Oman.

Salalah, the coastal capital of Oman’s Dhofar region is the most remote destination in the Sultanate. Yet, its unparallel natural beauty often compared to the tropics of the Middle East attracts thousands of visitors, especially during the monsoon ( khareef ) season which lasts through the months of June till August or even late September.

If you are planning on visiting Salalah by road from the UAE or Muscat , you are bound for a very long but definitely rewarding drive.

Here I am sharing my handy tips for driving to Salalah from Dubai based on my experience: driving distances, road conditions, which roads to take, 2WD vs 4WD cars, overnight stops, border crossings, as well as road safety tips.

For the best things to see in Salalah read my Ultimate Salalah Itinerary: best things to do in Dhofar region, Oman.

Dhofar region and Salalah by road: a guide to driving from Dubai to Salalah by car

During my Dubai to Salalah road trip , I drove in a loop first crossing the desert lands and then returning via Greater Dhofar’s coastal road. A total of 4000 kilometers driven. It was the longest road trip I have ever done within one week.

I have planned this UAE-Salalah drive based on information I found online. Yet I wish I knew a few more things before putting together my Salalah itinerary. Thus, I hope that this Salalah from Dubai by road guide will help you plan your drive efficiently.

Driving to Salalah from Dubai (UAE) by road: which route to take?

There are two routes you can choose to follow when driving to Salalah from Dubai (UAE) or Muscat (Oman):

  • A shorter boring route – inland through the deadlands (literal nothingness).
  • A longer scenic route – driving from the east coast to the south coast of Oman (a more scenic route).

    1. The shorter route from Dubai to Salalah

The shorter route from Dubai to Salalah is approximately 1220 k m and takes around 12.5 hours of continuous driving. This does not include the time required to cross the UAE-Oman border which varies depending on the traffic. If you are driving from other Emirates you will have to add an hour or two depending on where you are starting your journey from.

This “faster” route can be divided into sections between a few major towns along the way:

  • Dubai to Al Ain Hafeet (Mezyad) border – 160 KM, 1 hour 50 minutes
  • Al Ain- Nizwa- 260 KM, 2 hours 40 minutes
  • Nizwa-Haima – 380 KM, 3 hours 20 minutes
  • Haima-Salalah city – 400 KM, 4 hours 50 minutes

The “short” route to Salalah from UAE runs through the hinterlands of Oman. Only around 250 kilometers between the Oman-UAE border and Nizwa offers a truly scenic drive through the mountains. The remaining 800 kilometers in Oman belong to road 31 . Almost all this stretch till you reach the entrance of Salalah is an empty flat desert with no tourist attractions around.

Dubai to Salalah Road Trip Planner- salalah by car-route 31

If you are traveling from Muscat to Salalah, you will drive 1000 km for approximately 9.5 hours. You will face a similar scenario: the 150 km drive from Muscat to Nizwa is nice and scenic, then you will continue on the same boring route 31.

I have never driven through such nothingness before.

Nonetheless, one thing that I found fascinating on this long Dubai to Salalah driving experience was an almost instant change of scenery from the dry, grey flat desert to green rolling hills covered by the blanket of clouds. You would think that you appeared on another completely different continent. Only the gazing camels will remind you that you are still in the Middle East.

    2. The long coastal road to Salalah

The long route to Salalah from Dubai totals almost 1900 Km and takes 20.5 hours of continuous driving to complete it. The road follows Oman’s east coast along Arabian Gulf all the way to the south coast of Oman next to the Arabian sea. Although the coastal parts of the drive are beautiful, there are sections on this route that are winding inland through the desert and have a similar deadland feel as the above-mentioned route 31.

The coastal route can be divided into the following sections:

  • Dubai to Muscat – 450 Km, 4.5 hours
  • Muscat to Sur – 200 KM, 2 hours 20 Minutes
  • Sur to Duqm – 520 KM, 6 hrs
  • Duqm to Salalah – 670 KM, 7 hours 20 minutes

Is it worth taking a coastal road from dubai or muscat to salalah .

Yes and no. When planning my Salalah road trip, I read online that the coastal road is amazing and I was so fixated on driving it on the way back from Salalah to Dubai. However, it was way too much effort for very little reward. We budgeted 3 overnight stops along the way for this 20-hour long drive.

Dubai to Salalah Road Trip Planner- salalah by car- coastal road, Oman

I would advise taking the coastal road to Salalah only if you have plans to visit Masirah Island or, sugar dunes (4WD only). Otherwise, it is not worth the effort.

The coastal road section between Mirbat fishing village and Sinaq Canyon (Wadi Sinaq) is truly scenic, though. Thus, if you want to explore it, I would recommend it as a day trip from Mirbat.

The stretch between Wadi Sinaq and Duqm is more or less a deadland just like route 31. While the road from Duqm to Sur is nice but not exciting enough to add 6 hours to your journey.

Dubai (UAE) to Salalah (Oman) border crossings

  • If you are heading directly to Salalah from Dubai, or from other emirates in UAE, for the shorter route you should take the Mezyat border in Al Ain (also known as the Hafeet border).
  • If you are also planning to visit Muscat on the way, then you should cross the Al Wajajah border in Hatta.

Note: UAE-Oman borders get busy during weekends and public holidays. Therefore, if you are driving on one of those days make sure to start your journey early, or account for an extra hour or two for border crossing.

Oman visit visa for your Salalah road trip from Dubai (UAE)

As a GCC (and UAE) resident you no longer need a visa to enter Oman, as long as your residency is valid for a minimum 3 months before the trip. As a tourist in the UAE, you will have to apply for Oman visit visa.

You can do it online yourself via the Royal Oman Police website, or get it on arrival at the border (subject to nationality). Alternatively, you can use ivisa services. Those guys will get the Oman visa sorted for you for an extra fee.

Splitting the UAE-Salalah journey – where to spend the night?

The drive from UAE to Salalah is very long and travelers usually choose to break the journey with one overnight stop when taking the “shorter” (12 hours route) or 2-3 stops for a longer coastal route.

For the inland (shorter) route to Salalah, you have two options for an overnight stop:

  • Nizwa (or any nearby village, like Birkat Al Mouz, Bahla);
  • Haima on road 31.

Staying in Nizwa

I would recommend spending a night in Nizwa town or another nearby village because you can book a nice hotel via  booking.com , and also do some nice sightseeing in the afternoon/evening before the long journey the next day.

On the way to Salalah from Dubai, we stayed in Birkat al Mouz- a mysterious abandoned mud village 30 minutes away from Nizwa. It was one of the best experiences on our Salalah road trip.

oman travel guide- salalah road trip-birkat al mouz mud village

You can also stay in Nizwa which is a bigger tourist town and naturally has more accommodation options than Birkat Al Mouz. You will also get a chance to visit the wonderful Nizwa fort and Souq-a great cultural attraction on your road trip.

If you choose to stay in Nizwa, your first leg of the journey will take around 5 hours including time for border crossing (taken there is no queue). That being said, you will still have 8 hours left to drive through the deadlands the next day before you reach Salalah.

nizwa fort oman road trip itinerary, salalah rpad trip

  • Recommended accommodation in Nizwa
  • Heritage Inn Nizwa – a beautiful hotel in a traditional rustic Omani house, 100 meters from Nizwa Souq and 400 meters from Nizwa Fort. Price range: $$
  • Omani Guest House – steps away from Nizwa fort in an old quarter of the town this amazing traditional Omani house offers fantastic hospitality, and also a beautiful terrace overlooking the town. Price range: $$
  • Antique Inn – decorated in traditional Omani style, this hotel offers a beautiful garden area and an outdoor pool. Located just 200 meters from Nizwa Fort, and 400 meters from the Souq. Price range: $$
  • Date Palm Inn – a more contemporary lodging compared to the ones above but still with lots of authentic elements and a cozy garden. Price range: $$
  • Recommended accommodation in Birkat Al Mouz (30 minutes from Nizwa)
  • Bait Al Sabah Heritage Inn & Cafe – set between the ruins of ages-old Birkat Al Mouz mud village, this is a renovated cozy hotel with a fantastic coffee shop and a beautiful terrace overlooking the mysterious abandoned town. Price range: $$.

Staying in Haima

If you aim to stay in Haima you will cover more distance on the first part of the trip. However, there is no way to book accommodation online in Haima. You have to just show up and take whatever is available.

There are around only 3 roadside motels in the area to choose from. Pretty basic and quite pricey for what they offer (over 15-20 OMR).

Haima itself has nothing exciting in terms of scenery or sightseeing. It is just a small town in the middle of nowhere.

The hotels we passed by reminded me of Tarantino’s movie From Dusk Till Dawn. If you have seen it too, you know the drill. Thus I am glad we chose to stay in Nizwa and not Haima.

Where to break your trip when driving the coastal road to Salalah?

When taking the coastal road to Salalah, depending on your travel plans, you can break the journey into 3 parts with 2 overnight stops, or even more if you are exploring Masirah island, or even camping along the way.

On our Salalah road trip, we took the coastal route on the way back and had 3 overnight stops: in Duqm, Sur, and in Nizwa.

If you are passing Muscat, then it would be a great option to stop overnight and explore the capital of Oman. This could be an alternative to stopping in Sur unless you want to do some sightseeing around Sur (like Wadi Shab , or Wadi Tiwi, or Bimmah sinkhole on the way).

Where to stay on the coastal road from Dubai to Salalah road

Staying in muscat.

There are plenty of accommodation options to stay in the capital. Below are my suggestions for some great choices for different budgets:

  • Accommodation suggestions in Muscat
  • Fort Guesthouse – superb location at the beachfront of Muttrah corniche and Fort, features a lovely terrace and humble Omani-style accommodation. Price range: $-$$.
  • Grand Millenium Muscat -a home away from home, located close to Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Price range: $$
  • Al Bustan Palace -stunning coastline set against Hajar mountains, dreamy pools, and a stretch of private beach- great for romantic getaways and the best beachfront views. Price range: $$$.
  • Chedi Muscat – one of the most beautiful hotels in Muscat featuring modern Arabic architecture, beachfront, 100-meter long pool, yoga, and pilates classes- the perfect place for relaxation. Price range: $$$.

Staying in Sur

Sur is a small characteristic port town that makes a great stopover on the way to Salalah. There aren’t as many hotels as in Muscat but enough to make it a comfortable night over. Here are my top picks for Sur:

  • Sur accommodation suggestions
  • Sur Grand Hotel – The best-rated in the area, 6 KM from the center of Sur featuring nice beach views directly from the window! Price range: $
  • Sur Plaza Hotel – we stayed here-another decent option for the area with old-school film vibes and clean and spacious rooms. The hotel is located inland but has a pool for those who want to refresh on a hot day. The food served at the restaurant was average though. Price range: $-$$.

Staying in Duqm

Duqm is an industrial coastal town midway from Muscat to Salalah. There is nothing particularly interesting apart from Duqm cliff which you could visit at sunset if you stay in Duqm. Interestingly, Duqm has some high-end hotels by the sea, which means this town attracts its own audience.

  • Duqm accommodation suggestions
  • Grand Orchid Hotel Apartment – brand new hotel with great modern rooms and huge bathrooms. People working at the hotel are also very polite and helpful. Price range: $$
  • Crown Plaza Duqm, an IHG Hotel – set on the shores of the Arabian Sea, this upscale hotel offers modern rooms inspired by Omani architecture. It is situated in the best location in town where you can enjoy Duqm cliff views. Price range: $$$
  • Park Inn by Radisson Hotel – this hotel also has a beachfront, bar and a pool. $$$

Where to stay in Salalah

In Salalah, you will have various accommodation options to choose from- budget, midrange to luxury seaside resorts.

Here are my top pick for different categories:

  • Salalah accommodation suggestions
  • Grand Flora Hotel – Located in the busy part of Salalah city this hotel offers a reasonable rate to have a clean simple room to sleep in. They also have a cafe and restaurant which is good value for money and an easy choice instead of looking where to eat in the city. Price range: $
  • Belad Bont Resort – located on the West side of Salalah, this resort offers a terrace, swimming pool, modern rooms, and a restaurant with a well-rated breakfast. Price range: $$
  • Al Balled Resort by Anantara – Located at the beachfront oasis, this is Salalah’s first villa luxury resort which will provide you with a full-on luxury experience and is the perfect place to stay if you plan just to relax. Price range: $$$

Do I need 4WD to drive to Salalah?

Before my road trip to Salalah, I always believed that we absolutely need a 4WD to get around the Dhofar region in Oman. The great news is that after doing some research and taking the road trip in 2WD myself, I can now confirm that many beautiful sights around Salalah are still accessible with a small sedan car. Thus, it is not a must to have a 4×4 if you want to visit Salalah.

Dubai to Salalah Road Trip Planner- Salalah by car

Nonetheless, 4WD, or at least a higher clearance vehicle would be very useful and convenient as it opens up more opportunities to explore the area offroad. Also, it might be more comfortable for a long-distance drive.

This particularly is important for those travelers who are planning on wild camping. There are plenty of wonderful wild places which are only accessible with an off-road vehicle.

During our trip, for example, we had to skip a couple of wild beaches because we did not have a suitable car to reach them.

  • Check for the best car rental rates in Oman and UAE at Discovercars .

Dubai to Salalah Gas Stations

The frequency of petrol stations on the way from Dubai to Salalah depends on the area.

Make sure to fill up the full tank in Nizwa before heading down south of Oman on route 31. Refill in Haima and you should be able to reach Salalah unless you are driving Lamborghini. In any case, after Haima, there will be 3 or 4 stations before you reach Thumrait- another small town just before Salalah.

On the coastal road, you can find gas stations every 100-150 km or so. As a rule of thumb, you will always find petrol in every town you pass.

Tip: search for “petrol stations” on Google Maps and you will get them mapped out for you, so you can plan accordingly.

Petrol price in Oman

It seems like petrol prices in Oman did not get a memo about the global petrol price surge and remained one of the lowest in the world. Which is great news for us, travelers. At the time of our visit, one liter of petrol was 0.621 USD (0.63 EUR).

Safety tips for driving from Dubai to Salalah

Avoid driving to salalah at night.

Some of you may be considering the option of covering 12 hours’ drive in one shot without overnight stops. While you could do it, I strongly advise against driving at night in Oman, unless you absolutely have no choice.

Most of the roads you will have to drive through do not have street lights. The presence of animals makes it dangerous. Also, the monotonous road 31 can easily make a driver fall asleep (even during the day, let alone at night).

road trip planner uae

If you absolutely have to drive at night, calculate the time wisely and leave Dubai extremely early, like 4 am or even earlier. UAE roads have lights almost everywhere, so it will be much safer to drive at night in the Emirates than in Oman. This way you can reach Salalah in the evening before sunset.

Having a couple of drivers take turns could be helpful, though. Still, I do not recommend driving at night.

ALDO READ: Renting a Car and Driving in Oman Tips

Be aware of sandstorm alerts

As you will be driving through the desert, be aware of sandstorm possibility. There are warning signs all along route 31 indicating shifting sands. On an extremely windy day roads might get covered in sand which might make roads slippery, and worst case scenario even impassable for a regular 2wd (but this would be quite an extreme scenario).

Make sure you get your car checked before taking it for a long-distance road trip

It is strongly advisable to get your car checked and serviced before you go for such a long drive. In case of a breakdown (and I have heard this is quite common on Salalah road trips), it will be hard to get road assistance as you will be in the middle of nowhere. Thus, don’t take chances and only drive a well-maintained car.

Road conditions on the way to Salalah

Roads in Oman in general are well maintained. They are some of the highest-quality roads I have ever driven. Roads in Oman are also well-signposted in both Arabic and English.

On your way from Dubai to Salalah, you will have a mix of one-lane, two-lane and on a rarer occasion, 3 lanes paved roads.

On the long route from Nizwa to Haima, the road is a 2-lane highway which makes it very easy to drive it.

Just before Haima town, the two-lane highway 31 becomes a one-lane road that you share with upcoming traffic. Every 10 kilometers or so there is a lay bay if you need to stop safely.

Although route 31 is virtually traffic free, most of the passing cars are big trucks.

road trip planner uae

Some of them are notoriously slow driving below 60 km/h, thus watch out when approaching from the back at a high speed and overtaking.

Around 100 km from Thumrait town to Salalah the road again is 2 lane-highway.

Meanwhile, the coastal road is mostly one lane road. However, Sur -Muscat highway 17 is dual-lane.

Roads in Salalah and other provinces ( wilayats ) in Dhofar Governorate

Paved roads in Salalah like the rest of Oman are in great condition and connect all the main towns in the area. Also, many attractions are accessible via paved roads.

Nonetheless, the west side of the Dhofar region is mountainous and the roads here are steep and windy.

You will also be sharing them with hundreds of camels who are the bosses in the area and roam freely anywhere they feel like. Thus, be attentive, especially if driving after sunset.

Dubai to Salalah Road Trip Planner- salalah by car, camels on the roads of the city

We had to drive at night in the Salalah area (west and east of Dhofar) a couple of times. It was only for an hour or two, and it was no fun. Camels, cows, and goats continuously appear in the middle of the road which keeps you constantly on the edge. Also, roads have no lights in most places, unless you are close to the town.

Dubai to Salalah Road Trip Planner- Salalah by car, camel strolling on the road

Take extra care when driving in foggy conditions

The climate in Salalah during the Khareef season is similar to the tropics. Fog is one of the fascinating features of the Dhofar area in Oman. But it also makes driving more difficult, especially at night. Add camels and cows to the equation and it becomes extra thrilling.

Military checkpoints on the Salalah route

Dhofar region and Salalah are close to the Yemen border. Despite the unstable situation in Yemen, the south of Oman is safe to travel to.

There are, however, a couple of military checkpoints along the west side of Salalah on road 49. One of them is just before Shaat mountain, and the other one is near Dhalkut, the last village before the Yemeni border.

On the east side of Salalah, there is one military checkpoint near Hasik village on road 49.

When traveling, make sure you have your passports and car registration documents as well as your driving license. The checkpoint crossing procedure is hassle-free. You will be asked where you are going or where you are coming from and that is it.

I must admit, however, that seeing soldiers with guns and tanks parked on the side of the road does look intimidating and uncomfortable. Nonetheless, people guarding these checkpoints were polite and friendly.

Dubai to Salalah Road Trip Planner- Salalah by car, check points

Oman SIM card

For longer trips, I always buy an Oman SIM card so I can easily use Google Maps to navigate around.

You can purchase an Omantel sim card at the Al Wajajah border. I am not sure if it is available at the Mazayat border in Al Ain, but chances are it is. If not, you can get one in Nizwa Mall.

What should you carry for your Dubai Salalah Road trip :

  • Power banks and cables to charge your phone.
  • Enough water supply and snacks for the long empty sections.
  • Spare tire.
  • Cash (Omani Rials) as some remote shops and petrol stations might not accept cards.
  • Preload google maps if you do not have internet (although getting between main towns is easy by following road signs).

On April 16, the UAE witnessed its heaviest rainfall ever recorded, resulting in a challenging situation for residents who had decided to venture out for work.

Many found themselves struggling to find a way back home. For some, the journey back took a staggering 12 hours, resorting to walking for hours. On the other hand, many others were not been able to return home until the next day.

Prasin Dave, an Indian expat, was among the residents who spent over 12 hours on the road. He encountered heavy traffic and flooding, which disrupted his usual route from his office in Al Jaddaf to his house in Al Qusais. His daily 30 minutes trip, showed a 50-minute delay, raising concerns about the possibility of flooding.

As he made his way towards Deira changing his daily routes, he encountered heavy traffic because of the flooded roads. He explained, "People began getting out of their cars to investigate the cause of the congestion. Eventually they joined forces to create a path in the middle of the traffic jam, allowing larger vehicles to make an attempt to pass through."

However, the heavy rain resumed, prompting everyone to quickly return to their vehicles. He attempted to change directions but found that all the routes he tried were flooded. Feeling frustrated, he considered going to Deira City Centre, thinking he could park his car and get something to eat. Unfortunately, the parking there had been closed off.

Prasin encountered heavy rain and darkness while searching for a hotel but found that all were fully booked. He returned to his car and drove through flooded areas, causing damage to his car. He parked on the side and witnessed other vehicles floating in the water.

After couple of hours, stranded in one location. Prasin took the risk to try different routes and directions to get home safely. With limited phone charge, and only a banana – which he shared, he finally arrived home safely, at 3.50am.

Ligin Thomas, an Indian expat, found himself caught in a harrowing ordeal on Tuesday as he attempted to make his way from Al Sajaa Industrial in Sharjah to Dubai's Al Qusais. As he set off from the office at 3.30pm, he anticipated a smooth ride home.

Ligin

However, he soon encountered the first obstacle on the Sharjah airport road, where he was trapped for nearly two hours due to heavy rain. Ligin recalls, "Everybody kept honking, urging me to brave the waterlogged streets. I tried to manoeuvre through the flooded roundabout, but the vehicle succumbed to the rising waters, leaving me stranded."

Ligin faced the setback head-on and managed to drain the water from the vehicle. Realising that his planned route was inaccessible, Ligin decided to seek an alternative path. After exploring several alternatives, he had no other option. Ligin made the difficult choice to seek refuge near a mosque, where he spent the night, waiting for the skies to clear. It was not until 5am the next day that he finally managed to return home, after enduring a long and challenging journey.

When Ligin spoke to his wife on the way home, he learned that she also was unable to return to their home in Al Qusais. His wife, who works at a pharmacy in New Dubai, was offered accommodation and has gone back to work today, after replacements were unable to reach the pharmacy.

The severe weather conditions led to various individuals seeking help on social media platforms. One such example is Thomas Alexander, an Indian expat, whose son took to X to plead for help from the police and others as his diabetic father was stranded on the streets and unable to get home.

Thomas Alexander, who works in a food service company, found himself in a difficult situation as he had to be in the office due to ongoing food services. He left his office in Ras Al Khor at around 3.30pm. He took the Ras Al Khor bridge to Emirates Road to return to his home in Sharjah.

Thomas Alexander's car

"I waited inside the car for almost 6 hours. As time passed, my seat started getting wet and my legs were in water for almost three hours,” said Thomas. By that time, the water level had risen, and his car had gotten flooded. Concerned about his safety and health, Thomas decided to abandon the car and walk. The water level had reached up to his shoulders as he made his way seeking refuge.

The view from his hotel room

Thomas found a hotel nearby and decided to stay there for the night. However, the hotel had no working lifts and no food available. He walked approximately half-a-kilometre to a medical shop to obtain his necessary medicines. Describing the toughest part he said: “The water was so cold, and I was struggling to walk through it, and it was up to my chest.”

On Wednesday, the residents of Dubai continued to face challenges as they sought a way back home. Thomas considered moving to a different hotel, due to the dire conditions in the hotel he was staying at.

The drainage system seemed overwhelmed, leading to a lack of water in the toilets. With the roads still inaccessible, Thomas made the decision to remain at the hotel until the situation improved and the roads became clear for safe travel back home.

Meanwhile, Rony Banik, an account manager and Bangladesh expat, embarked on his own journey through the turbulent weather. Starting his journey at 8am from Al Raffa in Bur Dubai, Rony hoped to reach his office safely. However, as he made his way towards Sheikh Zayed Road, the rain intensified, and the streets in Business Bay quickly became flooded. With no means of returning home, Rony decided to take shelter in office.

Rony's hopes of leaving the office dwindled throughout the day. It continued to rain heavily, and the nearby metro station was flooded. Determined to make it home, Rony decided to pursue his journey on foot. Armed with his determination and shoes in hand, he ventured through the flooded streets of Satwa, desperately searching for alternate paths. After hours of relentless walking and navigating through waterlogged areas, Rony finally arrived at his destination, at 11.45pm.

Reflecting on his hazardous journey, Rony shared, "It was crazy. I walked for hours, encountering flooded roads and struggling to find a safe passage. I saw very few people along the way, mainly those who lived nearby and were also attempting to make their way home."

Rony's journey

Waheed Abbas, another resident who faced the challenges of the severe weather. In the face of the electricity and internet disruption at his place in Sharjah, Waheed made a bold decision to carry on his work by walking to his cousin's home. However, this seemingly straightforward task turned into a harrowing ordeal.

“It took me over an hour to reach to my cousin's home, which was only 50 metres away,” he said. Walking in between drowned vehicles and bins, he also noticed many people standing on their balconies, filming him and other residents who dared to traverse the water.
“Many residents were forced to come out of their homes to buy groceries, but all the shops were closed because they were flooded. It was scary at a few points when I nearly slipped and drowned," he added.

Emirates, flydubai issue alert as unstable weather delays flights at Dubai Airport

road trip planner uae

Travellers have been cautioned about potential delays on the road and advised to plan for extra travel time to reach the airport

Gulf Business

As unstable weather conditions persist across the UAE, flight operations have been impacted, leading to cancellations, delays, and diversions at Dubai International Airport (DXB).

Dubai Airports operations

Dubai Airports confirmed that the inclement weather on Tuesday led it to halt operations for a short period of time.

Due to the intense storm, operations at @DXB were temporarily suspended for 25 minutes, but have since recommenced. There is major flooding on roads leading to the airport and forecasts indicate that the unsettled weather will continue till tomorrow morning. — DXB (@DXB) April 16, 2024

In a statement posted on Twitter, it said “there is major flooding on roads leading to the airport and forecasts indicate that the unsettled weather will continue until tomorrow morning”.

Earlier in the day a total of 17 inbound and outbound flights were impacted – either delayed, cancelled or diverted due to thunderstorms and lightning.

Passengers faced disruptions as flights were either delayed or diverted due to the adverse weather conditions.

Due to weather conditions, we are currently experiencing some delays in arriving and departing flights. 9 outbound and 8 inbound flights have been cancelled this morning and 3 flights were diverted to other airports⚠️ Remember to check your flight status with your airline ✈️ — DXB (@DXB) April 16, 2024

Some delayed flights eventually landed around noon, highlighting the challenges posed by the unpredictable weather conditions.

The airports authority had issued an alert earlier in the day for passengers scheduled to travel from DXB.

If you’re travelling from #DXB today, be sure to allow extra time to get to the airport and use the Dubai Metro, where possible 🌧️ The metro operating hours have now been extended till 3AM tonight. — DXB (@DXB) April 16, 2024

Airlines issue advisory

Emirates Airline, one of the major carriers operating at DXB, issued a statement reassuring passengers that all its flights were operating as scheduled as of Monday evening.

However, travellers were cautioned about potential delays on the road and advised to plan for extra travel time to reach the airport.

Due to adverse weather conditions forecast in Dubai on 16 and 17 April, customers headed to @DXB may experience road delays. Plan for extra travel time to reach the airport, and complete check-in formalities before arrival for added convenience. https://t.co/wdbBF1Ko0D pic.twitter.com/pDYIB1aUMY — Emirates Support (@EmiratesSupport) April 15, 2024

“The adverse weather conditions in the UAE on 16 April have impacted our flight schedule at Dubai International (DXB). We have cancelled some flights as a result and are currently experiencing some delays. We are working hard to minimise any disruption to our passengers’ travel schedules and are coordinating with all parties at the airport.”

“We will continue to monitor the weather conditions closely and we advise our passengers to allow extra time for their journey to the airport and to check the status of their flight on flydubai.com.”

  • Passengers are advised to update their contact details via the Manage Booking section of  flydubai.com  or call on +971  600 54 44 45 .
  • Check in online is available between 48 hours and 75 minutes before the flight departure time from Dubai.
  • Passengers are advised to check their booking for their baggage allowances.
  • Passengers are advised to aim to arrive at the airport at least four hours before their flight departs. Please note that check-in closes 60 minutes before the flight departure time.
  • Passengers can save time at the airport by using self-service kiosks in Terminal 2, where they can print their baggage tag and complete online check-in then go directly to the dedicated bag drop desk.

The airline urged travellers to allow extra time for their journey to the airport and advised them to check the status of their flight on its website for updates.
