Classic American Road Trips
Pacific Coast Highway
Starting at the northwest tip of the United States at Washington’s Olympic National Park and remaining within sight of the ocean all the way south to sunny San Diego, this 1,650-mile, mostly two-lane road trip takes in everything from temperate rainforest to near-desert.
Highlights along the Pacific Coast Route: Olympic National Park (WA), Three Capes Loop (OR), Redwood National Park (CA)
Historic Route 66
The romance of traveling along historic Route 66 from where it starts in Chicago and ends in Los Angeles continues to captivate people around the world. If you’re looking for great displays of neon signs, rusty middle-of-nowhere truck stops, or kitschy Americana, do as the song says and “get your kicks on Route 66.”
Highlights along Route 66: Chicago (IL), Meramec Caverns (MO), Tucumcari (NM), Painted Desert (AZ), Santa Monica (CA)
- Barnes & Noble
- Books-A-Million
- Indigo (Canada)
- Powell's Books
- Apple Books
Running coast-to-coast from San Francisco to Ocean City, Maryland, “The Loneliest Road in America” is a 3,200-mile odyssey from sea to shining sea. US-50 passes through a dozen different states, four state capitals, and the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C.
Highlights along the Loneliest Road: South Lake Tahoe (CA), Moab (UT), The Million Dollar Highway (CO), Washington D.C.
Following in the footsteps of pilgrims and pioneers, US‑20 takes in a little of everything during its two-lane trek from Oregon’s rugged coast to the glorious sea and sand of Cape Cod.
Highlights along the Oregon Trail: Cannon Beach (OR), Fort Boise (ID), Yellowstone National Park (WY), Mt Rushmore & Carhenge (NE)
Dubbed the Great Northern in memory of the pioneer railroad that parallels the western half of the route, US‑2 is truly the most stunning and unforgettable, not to mention longest, of all the great transcontinental road trips.
Highlights along the Great Northern: Tumwater Canyon (WA), Glacier National Park (MT), Lake Michigan (MI), Acadia National Park (ME)
The Appalachian Trail
This driving route of the Appalachian Trail parallels the epic hike. From the top of New England to the heart of Dixie, it takes you through continuous natural beauty—without the sweat, bugs, or blisters.
Highlights along the Appalachian Trail: Mt. Washington (NH), The Poconos (PA), Shenandoah National Park (VA), Great Smoky Mountains National Park (NC)
Old Man River, Father of Waters, “body of a nation,” Big Muddy: By any name, the mighty Mississippi River cuts a mythic figure across the American landscape. Tag along from its headwaters in Minnesota to where it meets the sea in Louisiana via the GRR.
Highlights along the Great River Road: Main Street USA (WI), St. Louis (MO), Natchez Trace Parkway (MS), New Orleans (LA)
Starting at the Statue of Liberty and ending with a drive across the Overseas Highway to free-wheeling Key West, these almost 2,000 miles of roadway run within earshot—if not sight—of the Atlantic Ocean.
Highlights along the Atlantic Coast: The Statue of Liberty (NJ), Assateague Island National Seashore (MD), Savannah (GA), Cocoa Beach (FL)
Starting at Canada’s Jasper National Park, and winding down in the Sonora Desert, this route traverses some of the wildest and most rugged lands imaginable: mighty mountains, glaciated valleys, raging rivers, and two very different deserts.
Highlights along the Border to Border Route: Columbia Icefield (AB), Bitterroot Mountains (MT), The Extraterrestrial Highway (NV), Joshua Forest Parkway (AZ)
Once the only entirely paved route from Canada to “Old Mexico,” US‑83 cuts across America’s heartland and remains a must-do long-distance byway—transnavigating this broad, odd nation without once grazing a conventional tourist destination.
Highlights along the Road to Nowhere: Sitting Bull Memorial (SD), Nebraska Sand Hills (NE), Monument Rocks (KS), Paint Rock Pictographs (TX)
Following old US-80 and its contemporary equivalents takes you through more varied cultural and physical landscapes than you’ll find along any other cross-country route. From deserts to bayou swamps and Tex-Mex to barbecue, this route offers a full-flavored taste of America.
Highlights along Southern Pacific: The Desert View Tower (CA), Tombstone (AZ), Roswell (NM), Civil Rights Movement National Historic Trail (AL)

These are tough times.
In light of the spread of COVID-19, those of us who had fantastic national park plans this spring are now sitting at home, imagining all the experiences we might have had had we been able to travel. Some of us hit the road anyway and are trying to find out what is open and closed in our national parks. All these closures are a moving target these days.
The National Park Service is coordinating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state and local public health authorities and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to make its decisions on what to keep open or to close on a daily basis.
Here is information on major parks we cover and the resources you can use to find out more about what each national park is doing to take COVID-19 precautions. In the meanwhile, we hope you stay healthy. It’s hard to stay away from the parks, especially as the weather starts to warm, but we urge you to do what we’re doing right now: dream now and travel later. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook and read our weekly enewsletters to get inspired and stay in touch with the places you care so much about.

Plan your next Route 66 trip around thirst-quenching stops.

There are many ways to do a cross-country road trip in the USA, but these two itineraries will take you through some truly iconic American places.
1. Chicago to Los Angeles: A Whiskey Road Trip on Route 66
It doesn’t get more American than a 2,000-mile drive along the entirety of Route 66. There are endless ways to take this legendary trip (including an EV version —but to take your cross-country road trip to the next level, we recommend exploring another American pastime: whiskey.
Starting in Chicago and ending in L.A., you’ll stop by some of the leading craft distilleries in the United States, like Few Spirits in Chicago, Still 630 in St. Louis, and Red Fork Distillery in Tulsa. In between tastings, make time for detours to natural attractions, like the Grand Canyon, and quirky roadside curiosities, like Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. Just remember to drink responsibly—this is a road trip after all.

2. Bangor, Maine, to Seattle, Washington: The Great Northern on U.S. Route 2
Covering both the U.S. and Canada, a cross-country trip along U.S. 2 is ideal for anyone who wants to experience the vast diversity and expansiveness of North America. This drive runs the entire top border of the U.S. and showcases otherworldly natural wonders like Acadia National Park in Maine, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin, and Mackinac Island in Michigan. The route also passes through Canada, taking road-trippers through Ontario into Quebec—this route may focus on nature, but you won’t want to miss a stop in Montreal or Ottawa.
You’ll also get to explore Montana and Glacier National Park ( reservations may be required ) before passing the Columbia Plateau and ending in the Pacific Northwest’s largest city, Seattle. Don’t miss spending time in the Olympic Peninsula (home to Olympic National Park) for a peek at one of the most scenic places on the West Coast.
3. Dana Point to San Francisco: Driving California’s Pacific Coast Highway
The seemingly endless views of the Pacific Ocean along Highway 1 (also known as the Pacific Coast Highway) are what road trip dreams are made of, and exactly what makes this California road trip so popular. However, with so many stops along the 655-mile stretch, we pulled together a list of the ones well worth pulling over to view. Don’t miss the perfect surfing waves in Santa Cruz, seasonal cuisine in Malibu, an afternoon a the boardwalk in Santa Monica, or a night in Big Sur as you drive between Dana Point (just south of Los Angeles) and San Francisco.

The trip starts in the quaint small town of Ogunquit , with its rare (for the area) 3.5 miles of white-sand beach. For a sunny road trip itinerary in Florida, skip Miami and head farther south. Beginning in Key Largo and ending in Key West, the Florida Keys Scenic Highway is often overlooked for more well-known routes up north, but it is well worth going out of your way to experience.
As the name suggests, this route is very scenic, so plan to spend at least a few days exploring it and numerous stops along the way. Some highlights include driving across the impressive Overseas Highway, stopping to admire art in the town of Islamorada, and enjoying the historic sites, food, and (of course) beaches in the city of Key West.

In the minds of many, trips to Puerto Rico bring images of stunning beaches , delicious foods , and maybe a bioluminescent bay or two . Should You Use a Travel Advisor for Your Next Road Trip?
Sam Highley, founder of All Roads North, a road trip-focused luxury travel company, explains why travelers should consider using an advisor to plan their next trip. Photo: Shutterstock
Road trips have been a mainstay for Americans seeking to travel to exciting places and have adventures on their own terms. And with the summer finally upon us, millions of American are planning their vacations and preparing to hit the road.
According to a recent AAA Travel survey, nearly 100 million Americans – 4 in 10 U.S. adults – are planning to take a family vacation in 2019, slightly more than last year. The great American road trip remains a major draw for these families; more than half of traveling families are expected to pack up their cars for a road trip this year.
“In this day and age, what people are looking for is experiences,” said Sam Highley, founder and CEO of All Roads North, a California-based, road trip-focused luxury travel agency. “I think that’s what’s great about a road trip, it still has that sense of discovery and serendipity that most forms of travel just don’t have.”
All Roads North was launched in 2015, to help cater to the growing segment of Americans who seek unique travel experiences, but on their own terms.
“Our main focus is luxury American road trips. We plan multi-destination itineraries throughout the [continental] United States,” said Highley.
Though there are many different ways to travel, and road trips may not be to everyone’s liking, they do offer an experience unlike any other. “Everybody’s road trip experience is going to be different, not only what you see or do on each trip, but you also have the flexibility and space within that itinerary to do your own thing.”
The U.S. has a rich history of incredible journeys and road trips, and according to Highley, these are deeply ingrained in the American culture, which is why he chose to focus his agency on organizing and facilitating cross-country journeys for his clients.
“The clients that we work with tend to be very well-traveled, independent and curious. They’re not looking for a guided tour that has a very rigid schedule. I think a road trip really appeals to them because it has that sense of discovery to it,” said Highley.
Why do you need a travel advisor? But if all you need for a road trip is your luggage, a car and a plan, why bother hiring a travel agent? Well, with so many options available for road trippers, deciding what to do can be an overwhelming task.
“Planning a [traditional] holiday is relatively simple … [but when] planning a road trip, there’s a lot more to consider. You can do as much online research as you like, which is very time-consuming, but ultimately you still don’t know whether you’ll enjoy an area, or an experience more than another. So, I think that side of things is challenging, there’s a huge amount of crawling through information to planning a road trip, Highley said.
“There are so many component pieces to designing a road trip, and I think that can be a little daunting when you’re faced with so many options, to know what the right one for you is.”
All Roads North arranges a very detailed journey guide for clients, which includes not only the fixed component pieces, like hotel accommodations and guided experiences, but also directions, scenic routes, points of interest along the way, places to hike, where they might want to stop for lunch, and even taking care of dinner reservations for them.
“That’s what we’re always trying to do, strike that balance between planning a trip that we have a high degree of confidence will be fantastic for the client, but also continuing to push the boundaries of challenging them and surprising them. That’s what I hope all of our clients come back with at the end of the trip, and that’s often what they say.
“We may, for example, schedule a day where our client is spending time with a local expert learning about something or experiencing something. That’s a fixed part of their itinerary. But the next day, they might be driving from point A to B, and we might give them a framework with information to guide them, but they have the flexibility and independence, during that time, to really explore.”
Wherever their itinerary takes them, Highley hopes that the trip leaves them surprised and gets them thinking about America in a different way. “What I hope and what our clients say after they experience a trip is, ‘Wow! I really didn’t expect Utah, South Carolina, Louisiana, or Maine to be like that. It really surprised me. What an incredibly beautiful area.’”
Highley said the most satisfying part of the process is when he hears from his clients while they’re having a great time. “Hearing from our client, either on the road or when they get back, we’ll get an email or photo of them having an incredible time, and I just love it when people get in touch and share their unique experience.”

The staff is friendly and efficient. I was in & out in no time. Def recommend this location. Parking is easy and very little wait time.
I read a lot of mixed reviews for this location before I went. I personally had a great experience. It's close to the LB airport. Plenty of parking. I was getting a title transfer done and it all in all took me 15-20 minutes. I was helped really quickly after being checked in. I called back to this branch for some follow up questions and I was helped by a woman named Denise who was so friendly. She was very clear and patient with me even with their business coming close to closing hours. Great experience overall. I will be going back here for renewing my car registration soon !
Check-in line
Worst service, I asked for a Spanish speaker representative and they said they only had one person, the representative who attended to me was so rude and had the worst attitude. My husband talked over two weeks with two different representatives due to a wrongful calculation on aaa behalf and their attitude was that the system could not be changed to the right amount, they couldn't give a logical explanation about what happens and never tried to fix the issue. They will always lookout for the company interest not the customer. We had to escalate this to one manager, the representatives never provided a decent solution, they suggested we should wait 90 days to have an answer even when we only had two more installments left on our policy. After All this and having no explanation, we decided we're better going to another insurance compan.
Drivers put others at risk intentionally. Rude to drivers on the road. AAA use to be a company with class but now they are like the rip off mechanics that you hear about. Aaa truck intentionally parking his vehicle to cause near accidents.
This AAA is located in a Industrial area with lots of free parking next to Long Beach Airport, it is huge, very open and bright. There was no line walk in and was taking care right away, at the check station there is a basket full of free AAA water. I have been a member of AAA for 29 yrs. they have been there for me and all of my vehicles registration needs, I also use AAA for all my cruise traveling nothing like having a free travel agent at your service, here are just a few privileges that they offer roadside services, emergency fuel delivery to you free, vehicle towing, battery, lockout, RV, motor home and vessels service, rental car, homeowners Insurance, safety education classes, discount tickets to major amusement parks, plus so much more. The classic membership is 7 miles to any location, the AAA plus membership is 100 miles to any location, and the AAA premier membership is 200 miles to any location, so the bottom line is why go to DMV long lines and staff that seems to wake up on the wrong side of the bed with attitude trying to assist you, AAA they're the best hands down.
*sighs* The reason we switched auto insurance to AAA (that is not cheap) is being that of the outstanding customer service.... Or so we thought. We came into the Long Beach branch/office recently and it was the most difficult transaction in the beginning. We were NOT greeted more like summoned by the most distasteful REP you could encounter. Her name is (MONIQUE) & I apologize if the spelling is incorrect. Her work ethic and representation was completely unprofessional, not only did she insult multiple people she would also not answer any of our questions and then rebuttals with snarky remarks as if we should know what the answer is. My child was with me during this visit and reached to grab a pamphlet when she then grabbed them all aggressively & tried fixing them. Overall there is no need for this type of behavior, we are not children and shouldn't act like or treat paying customers in this manner. You would think customers are the rude ones and the reps can keep their cool! What's next? Discrimination? First impressions are everything, this will only encourage us to not recommend any of our family or friends, or their family and friends to AAA.....
Went to this brunch and was helped by Derek knight. He was very rude and not helpful at all. When I asked for a manager he said that there was no manager on site and started arguing with me at this point he also threatened me. This was an-unpleasant experience and horrible customer service. I pay so much money each for my vehicle each month to be treated this way.
I've been a member of the AAA for over 24 years. My experience at this branch this past Saturday felt like I was a stranger walking in off the street. Met with Car Insurance Agent. Quotes me $240 per month and $563 down. Car is brand new and I have a clean driving record. My only disappointment was when I asked the insurance agent an explanation for the cost he simply said and iterated premiums are high and you have a brand new car... REALLY? So I shopped around not only did I get a quote for less than $200 a month BUT they gave me a discount for being a AAA member. The irony...
In and out !! Great service!! I love AAA , everyone is so friendly and nice , this place has free water and cookies some days .
